Question: The Word "crap" Is Added To Document Or Email After Smitfraud Was Removed

I removed the SmitFraud trojan from a customer's computer, and she reported that when she composed an email, the word "crap" appeared in her email three times. Sometimes, she composes her emails using MS Word and copies and pastes to Outlook Express, and she could not remember if she used Word this time or composed the email in OE directly.I removed SmitFraud using SmitRem, SmitFraudFix, RogueRemover, and CCleaner. The first time I did this, she encountered some remaining spyware the next day (XP Antivirus?), so I did the same thing and then followed up with a Hijack This log. I removed an entry that referred to "BrowsingSoftware", and that took care of most of the problem. Then, a few days later, she encountered her "crap" problem.I then tried running RogueRemover again. It did not find any problems, so I ran DSS and I am posting the logs from that run.I should probably mention that my customer is blind, and JFW refers to Jaws for Windows, which is a program that reads windows aloud. It is always running. If I do anything that affects Jaws, my customer will be very upset. Here are the logs. Please let me know if anything looks out of place.Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68Run by Sarah on 2008-05-30 14:04:07Computer is in Normal Mode.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- System Restore --------------------------------------------------------------Successfully created a Deckard's System Scanner Restore Point.-- Last 5 Restore Point(s) --15: 2008-05-30 21:04:12 UTC - RP480 - Deckard's System Scanner Restore Point14: 2008-05-30 20:40:06 UTC - RP479 - Installed AVG Free 8.013: 2008-05-30 10:24:48 UTC - RP478 - System Checkpoint12: 2008-05-29 10:00:22 UTC - RP477 - Software Distribution Service 3.011: 2008-05-29 07:48:07 UTC - RP476 - System Checkpoint-- First Restore Point -- 1: 2008-05-17 00:26:31 UTC - RP466 - System CheckpointBacked up registry hives.Performed disk cleanup.Total Physical Memory: 480 MiB (512 MiB recommended).-- HijackThis Clone ------------------------------------------------------------Emulating logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 2008-05-30 14:05:29Platform: Windows XP Service Pack 2 (5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer (7.00.6000.16640)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\explorer.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exeC:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exeC:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exeC:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Caere\OmniPagePro10.0\OPware32.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exeC:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exeC:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\sistray.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exeC:\richard\dss.exeR0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.com/R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://home.microsoft.com/access/autosearch.asp?p=%sR1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?p...amp;ar=iesearchR3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Preferred Solution: The Word "crap" Is Added To Document Or Email After Smitfraud Was Removed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Richard HuffordWelcome to the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum, sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to. If you have not resolved your issue and still need assistance, post a new HJT log please as your system may have changed since your original post. You have some nasty stuff on this system that needs to be removed.I need to see a Hijackthis log please.Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.Double click it to installFollow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exeOpen HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is UncheckedGo to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi,

I am developing an add-in for outlook that consists of creating a customized send button next to the standard one. when outlook is configured to use the word editor, when I add the customized send button to the command bar of the mail in edit mode, the add-in is also added in word document. The reason is that the word editor is activated in outlook. How can I tell my add-in not to add the button in word as well. I don't want to deactivate the editor word. There must be a way how to detect the opened application. I searched for my problem on the internet and people said to test if the kind of the document is word mail or word document. Here's part of my code that didn't work correctly:

//event triggered when item is opened

private void Inspectors_NewInspector(Outlook.Inspector i)

{

//some code to test if it is a maiitem, etc.

Word.Document document = (Word.Document)i.WordEditor;

if (document.Kind.ToString() == "wdDocumentEmail")

addsendbutton();

}

The problem is that the button is still showing at word level. Visual studio is not launching the condition on all the windows. So he?s adding it in word as well, although word document is a wdDocumentLetter.

I have 2 options in mind:

1- The code must not be called at new inspector level. Because this trigger is not launched in the case of the word document

2- The inspector from which we get the word editor is not the right one for word document (Word.Document ... Read more

I need to know how to send an email attachment via Microsoft Word to many different recipients.  I asked someone previously and they told me to go to mail recipients but it didn't work.  Is there a step by step instruction guide on how to do this so I don't have to keep typing the same document each time?  I have the document typed up ready to go right now.   I just don't know how to create an attachment and email to many recipients.  Any help is appreciated thanks.

Answer:need help with microsoft word document via email...

Open your email client and start a new outgoing email message, select the names of those to whom you want to send the document, and then depending on the specific email client click on either "attach file" or "insert file" or something similar and navigate to the file you want to send and double-click on it. That's it

Hi guys,
When I press the new mail icon (to make a new email) instead of the email form popping up it seems to be opening a word document. Even though this still shows: To:, Subject fields etc.

Is there a way to put it back to normal?

Thank you :)

I have just bought a new laptop with word 2007 installed on a free trial. I have just about got grips with it but cannot see a way to email a document as an email rather than as an attachment using outlook, which seems to be the only option. Previous versions of word allowed you to email the document in 'Outlook express' or 'Windows mail' as they now call it. Is there a way of doing this other than copying and pasting?

Answer:email a document in word 2007

Click the Office button (top left) > Word Optrions > Customize > select All Commands and add 'Sent to mail recipient' to the Quick Access Toolbar.

I opened a word document from an email (attachment) and worked on it and hit "Save". I am unable to access all the work, and the "Search" is unable to find the document.
Can someone guide me how I can retrieve the file?

I am a newbie and I would appreciate any help urgently.

Thanks

Answer:Word document saved in Outlook email

The easiest way to figure out where your document went is to open an email message that includes an attachment, open the attachment, then go to File--> Save As. The Save As default path is always the same for emails, and the reason the search doesn't find it is because it is hidden in a temporary internet file folder. (Something like C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK) Chances are as soon as you click Save As, you will see the document sitting in the temp folder. Then instead of saving the dummy doc you opened, simply right click on the doc you want, and hit copy. Then paste it somewhere (like your desktop for easy access), and there it will stay! Hope this helps!!

I received a letter as an attachment via my ntl email account and opened the attachment which opens on word 2003. I could only see the date and my name on the document. A bit of exploring showed that the text of the letter was contained in a text box. I could not change the size of the text box or get to the text except by deleting the first part of the text to display the second bit. Using the menu option I could convert to frame and read text that way (a job rejection letter!)Anyway, I then forwarded the email to my yahoo email account, where the attachment was scanned and the document opened in all its glory, including the company logo and graphics.....So far I have checked that both documents are loading up the same version of word (same license number and version) and am stumped......I have norton installed on my PC so at the moment am debating if there is a problem with that when it is scanning the ntl delivered document (if it is) or maybe even if my outlook needs reinstalling.I can't blame ntl if the document forwards to yahoo ok.reopening the attachments for both sources several times and I get the same result so it isn't a one-off glitch.....Confused? Oh yes....

Answer:word document not opening properly from email

Word is opening the document differently from outlook. It opens it in report layout and I have to click on the actual page button to display the contents of the document. If I save the document and open it it opens up normally. very odd.

Whenever I send and receive emails that have ?word? documents attached, the documents often get corrupted in transmission. This shows itself as spaces between words disappearing. Only a few each time. For example a recent 20 000 + word document I?ve been working on, had about 30 ? 40 spaces lost. Any ideas what the issue could be?

Answer:I cannot find a word document I opened as an email attachment

The file will be located in a folder somewhere in
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\

"\AppData" is normally hidden
"\Temporary Internet Files" is normally a hidden protected Operating System
file

You'll have to remove the checkmark (if they're hidden) in Windows Explorer:
Organize - Folder & Search Options - View

Good luck in finding it, though.

The correct way is to save the attachment first, then open it
from the saved location, if you wish to edit it.

Answer:word document on flash drive garbles in email

There are a lot of steps in between. Does the file open on the flash drive? What about when copied to the computer? What version of Word was it created with? Using standard fonts? Any special coding? Does the receiver have the same version of Word installed? Is the problem with just one recipient?

More details, please.
What happens when you try to download? Any error messages or popups with advice? What message is received?

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

Answer:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

Answer:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

This is just one of those odd quirks I have run into. When I open a new document in Word, then open an older file, the new document closes and only the old one is displayed.Using Microsoft Office 2010, specifically Word.Windows 7 64-bitA bit of explanation, I often do research/writing for school or for fun. This issue has always happened, just one of those small annoyances. Here is the exact thing that is happening:1. I open a new (blank) word document, by clicking on the Word icon or by selecting "Open New Document" in the Word program.2. I open an older (saved) Word document, by clicking on the saved file, not by using the "Open" function in Word.3. The New (empty) document disappears, only the older document is open. I must now open a new empty document to write in. What I want to happen:1. Open new document2. Open old document3. Both new and old document are open (2 windows).Other notes in no particular order:- Word has always operated like this. Just wondering if there is a way to stop it.- I am not using the "Open" function in Word to open the older file, I am opening the older file by double-clicking it in the File explorer. When I use the "Open" function in Word, it does the same (basically "closing" the new file in order to open the old one). - I tried searching through Word's settings but couldn't find anything that seemed to relate to this behavior.- As per regular Word behavior, the new document is auto-na... Answer:Microsoft Word Question (Opening old document closes new empty document)

Yes, you are right. That is normal for MS Word.Do this:Open a new document. Type something. Even a single space. Save it with a name you want. Now open an older document. Both documents can be on the screen or cascaded. If memory is not an issue, you can haven two instances of Word.

Is there any free software out there that will allow me to scan a document and convert it into word/excel and allow editing?

Answer:Converting scanned document from image to a word/excel document

you are going to want to search for OCR programs.

Try "freeware OCR" in google or check out www.Softpedia.com

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

Answer:[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.

There's a blue ">>" symbol being added onto my icons. I've gone through my list of programs and can't find out what is causing this. See the attached picture.

THANKS!

Answer:Symbol being added onto my document icons.

Are you running Norton 360? (or similar)

If so it is called Backups Status Indicators.

Tell what files are backed up or pending backups.

You can uncheck that option if you dont want it.

I was working on a Word document that someone sent me by email in form of rar and saved the document. I now can't find the revised file and I have lost about 8 hours of work. Any ideas on where I can find this file? I looked in the email that was originally sent, but it is still the old file. I have also done searching on my computer with no luck. Help, I'm desperate!!! I have Word 2007. Please give me reply as soon as possible.

Answer:Cannot find the saved revised document in Word document

If you were only hitting "Save" and not "Save As" the document is likely, unfortunately, gone. You can try opening Word by itself and going through recent documents to see if it shows up. If you opened it directly from the email and the email was in Outlook, you might be able to find it in the Outlook Secure Temp Folder. To get to this folder, the easiest way is to send yourself a PDF file, open the PDF from the email then go to File | Properties and on the General tab (this is from memory, so I might be off a little bit) you'll find a location that you can click on. In this folder, you have a slight chance of finding the modified file. The only other option you have, that I can think of, would be digging through your temp folders hoping to find a .tmp or .doc file in there that has the content, but I give that about a .01% chance of happening. Good Luck!

Answer:When typing a word document my laptop keeps sending the document

Hello

I don?t know what you mean with laptop keeps sending the document but if you have this issue with office word or some other office application, try to check some forum where you can find discussion about similar theme.

I can not give you any precise answer but it is maybe because of office specific settings or you press accidentally some key on the keyboard and on this way interrupt symbols entering.

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. Additionally, I know that the document could be sent from Windows Explorer by right-cli... Read more

Hello,
I used mail merger to create 25 letters to different locations and different people. The source used for the names and address's were from an excel file. I used "Edit Individual Documents" in order to get all the letters in one document. Now the problem is i need a backup of each letter on my computer and i have no clue if its even possible to save each page in the master document as a unique document. If not, is there a way of saving each unique document of a mail merger?
Thanks in advance.

On my previous computer with Windows 2000, I was able to make incremental backups of a Microsoft Word document while it was being created by me. The advantage of this was that if an "accident" happened and the document was lost or corrupted before it was completed or saved to a folder, the partially completed document could be retrieved from a special folder somewhere in C-drive. I was able to specify how often a new backup was created (ex.: every 3 minutes, ex.; every 10 minutes, etc.). It is possible that this special folder also contained backups of all previously saved Word documents, which were also being re-backed up every few minutes. -- I cannot find any reference to this on my new computer (Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2002) in the Windows search engine, or in the Word user interface "Help". I cannot remember how I found this feature on my previous (W~2000) computer. -- Thanks

Ok, so my Norton Internet Security expired on my Asus laptop and I uninstalled it and Norton LiveUpdate. My internet worked fine. Then I installed AVG 8.5 antivirus and as soon as I rebooted the machine my internet stopped working. It says "the connection keeps resetting" when I try and get on the internet, and I cannot update the AVG now. I did turn on the Windows Firewall right after restarting, but after turning it back off, I'm still without internet.

I'm using a NetGear wireless router connected to a broadband modem.

Any suggestions?

URGENT!! (Isn't it always?) I need to convert a multiple tab excel document to a word document. I read that I can save as a pdf, then convert to word but I have only Adobe Reader. If this can be done, is there a way to conserve the original format and the links in the excel doc?I would prefer leaving in excel but the customer needs a word document. Also, just in case I can convince to leave in excel -- is there a way to print the excel file as one document without printing each tab separately? If so, how do I ensure the formatting looks good to print as a regular 8.5 x 11 document? Thanks for any help.

I have a client with a problem creating new documents from the File > New > Word Document dropdown from Windows Explorer window. If I set her default font to Times New Roman it will stay for creating new documents from within Word. If she goes the other route mentioned above to create a new document it will always default to Courier. My Primary SATA Hard Drive with Windows XP installed is showing up as E: Drive, while master IDE Hard Drive is showing up as C:.

The original setup was with two IDE Hard Drives, but I wanted to add this SATA Hard Drive. So I removed the Slave HD on the primary IDE channel, and simply connected the SATA Hard Drive, setting its jumper as Master.

So, I now have:
1x SATA HD set to Master (E
1x Primary IDE 0 HD set to Master (C
2x Secondary IDE DVD Burners, IDE 0 set to Master, IDE 1 set to Slave. (G: and H:, respectively - skipping F for my thumbdrive).

I can't change my SATA Hard Drive to C: through Disk Management because it is telling me that you can't change disk letters on disks that are the system volume or boot volume.

SATA is set as the primary channel in my BIOS, and IDE is set as secondary.

It boots up to my SATA installation, which is good, but I want it to be drive C:.

PLEASE tell me what I can do.

Answer:Added SATA HD and removed 1 IDE HD, drive lettering not correct - help!

It's true. You can't change system drive letters.

You'll have to reinstall or mess with nt loader, which I don't recommend. It seems like you just re-installed anyway, why not try again.

For future reference, only keep the drive you want to install windows on plugged in while installing. It eliminates any mistakes you may make.

I have two virtually identical Dell laptops running Windows Home Premium.

On one of them I wanted to see what was in the hidden RECOVERY partition so I fired up Disk Manager and added a drive letter. Nothing in the partition made sense to me so I removed the drive letter.

However, windows no longer recognizes the RECOVERY partition. If I run standard windows "Create System Repair Disc", I get an error message "The parameter is incorrect 0x80070057".

The Dell DataSafe program also says it cannot find the RECOVERY partition.

a) Is there some kind of attribute that got changed when I assigned the drive letter and then removed it? If yes, how can I set it back?

b) The laptops are virtually identical. Can I use a recovery disk from one on the other? I'm particularly interested in keeping MS Office 2010 Starter edition intact when I upgrade to Win 7 Pro.

TIA

Hello.
I hope all of you at MajorGeeks enjoyed the holidays

You have helped me greatly in the past. For nearly two years, I have had no significant malware or spyware issues! Unfortunately, I encountered an apparent Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C infection earlier tonight. It occurred while in the process of a single song download, however I am pretty sure the actual file I downloaded was not the problem, but rather the site itself which uses a format similar to YouTube and is a multimedia search site.

I followed the instructions in the READ & RUN ME, and then followed the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure almost entirely. I'll briefly describe my results:

SUPERAntiSpyware - Scanned full system, it found many infections, could not delete any, and got blue screen fatal stop error.

SpyBot - Search & Destroy - Scanned full system, it found many Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C infections, apparently deleted them, but I do not think it was effective.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Quick system scan, found many Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C infections, deleted them. I think this is a very effective scanner.

combofix.exe - I did not run this. I read the instructions at the link provided, but - to me - they were very complicated, and I felt very uncomfortable attempting this.

MGtools.exe - Ran this tool, zip logs attached.

It appears most of the infection has been removed, but I think some remnants remain. I am not getting the silent pop-ups that I was getting imm... Read more

Answer:Virtumonde, Smitfraud-C Partially Removed

The scans took care of most of it, however, part of your problem is that you are still running AVG7.5. This program is no longer supported, so I would suggest that you uninstall it and find another anti-virus program.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Yesterday I was infected by Smitfraud, which I managed to get rid of via the SmitfraudFix command line based program. I have returned all policies and settings to normal, restored my desktop to it's rightful state and destroyed all traces of infection. However, after this I have been having connection issues, it seems something during infection has blocked certain online content, for example, I cannot sign into Windows Live Messenger, nor can I install it after removal since the easy installer can't reach the info online to download it. Other websites also have issues, such as the firefox website which cannot be accessed at all. The browser I use is Firefox 3 and my OS is Windows XP with Service Pack 2. In Word 2010 there is a direct option to share and save any word file to SkyDrive directly simply by configuring your Windows Live ID. To Save your any doc file to SkyDrive follow the steps given below one by one and get your docment saved on your account directly from your desktop:
1. Open any Word document which you want to save to skydrive.
2.Click on File menu and then select Save to SkyDrive.
3. In the right panel th SkyDrive login page will start retrieving. As the page retrieves it will prompt you for Login credentials of yourWindows Live ID. Just give your ID and Password and login.
4. As you get login you will see your folders already present on your SkyDrive. Now you can save the document file to that folders or you can create a new folder and then click on SaveAs.
Now you can share and use your documents from anywhere in the world directly from your desktop via Office 2010. Happy Windows Computing !!!

The problem occurred without warning after many previous instances of trouble-free copying of Notepad text into MS Word 2010. Here?s an example of what happens:-1. I type a sentence into Notepad.2. I then attempt to copy and paste it into an open MS Word file.3. The cursor in the resulting MS Word file stops blinking on completion of the ?paste? process. A few seconds later, MS Word indicates ?not responding?.4. I press CTRL + ALT + DEL to open the Task Manager.5. On doing this and clicking on the MS Word document in the Task Manager and selecting ?End Task?, a message box stating ? WINWORDC.EXE is not responding?, with 3 option buttons, pops up. One of the 3 option buttons is ?Close program?.6. When I click on ?Close program?, another message box pops up saying ?WINWORDC is trying to recover your information?. Then, a few seconds later, the MS Word document closes (but without saving the text copied from the Notepad file).

G'day,
When I download save or display a word document which is locked some of the fonts change and this makes the documant look bad and as a result it is not paged correctly.
I am using Windows 7 and MS Office Home & Business 2010.
If I use a different computer which is XP and 2003 the document displays correctly, if I copy this to the Windows 7 PC the document font is changed.
The lock document is a form which has been locked for easy completion.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Answer:Smitfraud Removed(i Think) Slow Internet And Crashes.

A mod should come along and transfer your HJT log to the proper forum. In the meantime, I'd suggest not doing anything until the HJT team gets done with your log.

While waiting, you can read up on backing up your Firefox, completely removing it from your system, and then reinstalling it. But don't do it until your HJT log has been worked - it may hide some of the bad entries that are needed by them.

I'm working on my in-laws' 1.5 gHz computer which says it has 448MB of RAM (can that be right?). Over the years I've been periodically attempting to remove the malware and viruses it has accumulated, but never successfully. No backups and no clean System Restore points. No firewall. It has AVG7, Ad-aware 2008 and Spybot.

Problems with the system: slow program loads (my PC is even older than this one but works much faster), slow webpage loads, unable to load more than one webpage at a time (if you try to load two tabs at once, it immediately fails the second one). Ad-aware would occassionally find massive amounts of things, and Spybot would always find Virtumonde and Smitfraud.

Now I found the guide (the READ ME FIRST guide). Holy cow! So I went through all the steps. There are two SAS logs because I accidentally ran a Quick Scan the first time around. Do I look clean?

I haven't even rebooted yet, but the system is much zippier and I just loaded three tabs at once. I'm assuming I'm clean, but I'll run one of the scanners again to see. Let me know what you think. Additionally: I've loaded SpywareBlaster's protections, updated all the malware removal tools, and installed Comodo BOClean. I'll be installing Outer Armor when I close this window.

Also: how do I make sure that AVG (and, I suppose, BOClean) load for every user? They seem to be only loading for my username, but there are three others on this PC.

Is there a way to close a Word document in Word 2007 without going to the dropdown menu? What happened to the little 'x' in the upper right hand corner that all other Windows programs still have? I have the minimize, maximize, and large 'X', but if I am only working on 1 Word document and click the large X, the file AND Word both shutdown. Is there any way to get the little 'x' back?

Answer:How to retrieve a word document from a word.tmp file

Are you using Microsoft Word? Or WordPad? Word uses either .doc or .docx as the file extension, WordPad uses .rtf or .txt. If you've already named & saved the file yesterday, that's the file you should be looking for. Chances are the original is still good but any changes you made today probably didn't 'stick'.

Hello all,

On the 12th October I was editing a Word 2007 document on my Vista Home laptop. Throughout editing I pressed Ctrl S to save the doc over the previous version. I copied data in from several other files.
I went back yesterday to edit the document again and it has disappeared. The only version of the doc is a previous version dated 21st Sept.
I searched on all files modified after 11th Oct just in case I had saved it under another name. Not in there. The files I copied data from did come up in the search results though, soi knwo the search function is working.
I checked the default Autosave location - not in there.
I checked the recycle bin - the doc is not in there and neither are any ~ files or autosaved files. I haven't emptied my recycle bin for months.
I cannot find a word doc modified afetr the 11th October.

Can it really just have disappeared? It is my MBA dissertation paper and I worked on this edit for an awful lot of hours.

Many thanks.

I have made a brochure (containing a table)in MS Word97 in *.doc format. The brochure needed to be transferred to my mother-in-law's PC for printing as we don't have a printer. Anticipating compatibility issues (we use MS Office on a system running Win98SE; she uses MS Works on a system running WinXP), I made one page and opened it on her PC. The PC read and printed my test document and I assumed it would work. I then spent the day making the brochure, FTPing and downloading it to her PC. Now when I go to open the documents, Works says that it can't read them (I tried various options - double-clicking to open; selecting different *.doc file extensions from the drop down menu etc). I downloaded the Word97 viewer from Microsoft and it, too, claims not to be able to read the documents. Is there anything I can do to make her PC recognise these documents? And why can't different Microsoft word processors read each other's file formats??? Arrrrrgh! Please help!Jill

Answer:Word viewer will not read Word document

Any version of Microsoft Word should be able to read a document from the same or an earlier version of Word. As long as you have saved the document as Word Document (*.doc). Opening the document from within Word is the safest way.

I have an old document created in Word Perfect 5.1 saved on a floppy disk. My present computer has Windows 98 and Microsoft Word. I need to edit and print the old Word Perfect document. Can it be translated to Word? Thanks.

Answer:Transfering word perferct document to Word

You should be able to hit File-Open from Word. Change the files of type (at the bottom of the dialog box) to "all files, *.*" and just double-click the Wordperfect document. It should automatically convert it.

After that, if I were you, I'd go to Tools-Options, Compatibility tab. Change compatibility to Word document. Then, hit ctrl-a to select the entire document, go to Format-Paragraph and make sure line spacing is single; then change the font to Arial, Times new roman, or other Word font, as opposed to the old Wordperfect fonts.

Hi Hollyoaks777

Just so I have it straight, when you say "opening up a brand new document" do you mean you have a blank document that you open, say on your desktop (as a shortcut), or does this happen when you click File then New.

Have you checked Options => Save to see if there is an option box to control this behavior?

I'm running Windows 10 mobile plus latest updates on a Lumia 950.
My Hotmail email account wasn't syncing correctly so I removed it from the phone, restarted the phone then added it again.
It appears to have added the Microsoft Account OK but I am not getting email, contacts or calendar - can anyone help? Is there anything else I need to do?

Second verse, same as the first. I've noticed several complaints here regarding this exact same problem and now I have it too. Anyways here's the message I get when I click on my Internet Explorer icon:

Warning!

[email protected] is a virus that infects file with .exe extensions. It attempts to steal passwords and private information from the infected computer.

Type: Virus
Infection Length: 138, 293 bytes
Systems AffectedL Windows 95, 98 ME, NT (all versions), 2003, Windows XP (all service packs)
Systems Not Affects: DOS, EPOC, Linux, Macintosh, Novell Netware, OS/2, UNIX
Technical Details: 1. Creates files in %Windr%\directory. By default, this is C:\Windows.
2. Adds values to registry keys:
3. Scans the hard drive for .exe files and infects any executable files. Searches for passwords/information, which it may send to a remote attacker.
Recomendations: Click "OK" to download officially approved security software. Always keep your patch levels up-to-date.

The website it goes to is http://iesecurepage.com/ rather than my homepage, 9which really makes me mad since I pay a lot of money for my own website and my homepage is currectly hijacked like this.)

When I click OK it takes me to some place to purchase Virus burster which I have read only bad things about.

So if anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a ton!

Hello everyone,

In a Word 2007 document, I use many checkboxes. When I open it with the computer on which it was created, it works fine.

When I try to open it on another computer connected in the same domain name, the checkbox names are automatically changed by Word, which puts a 1 at the end of the names.

Because of this, when we check a checkbox, the VBA code behind the checkbox doesn't execute, because the name of the checkbox doesn't match the name of the VBA Sub or Function.

Does someone know why that happens, and how to fix it?

Thanks for your precious help.

Daniel G.

I want to add a second email program and make it the default. How can i accomplish
this? My present program is OE 6 and OS is Home Xp SP 2.
Thanks,
Billjh

Answer:New email program to be added

What program? In Internet Explorer under the TOOLS menu choose Internet Options... Then choose the Programs Tab and choose what email program you wish to use. Once you install the software for your new email program, the choice will appear in the drop down menu.

Also, when install your new email software, you should get the option to make it your default program.

Hi,

I am not sure if this is possible in word, but say I have document A. I place document A within document x, document y, and document z. Is it possible to make changes to document A and have the changes updated automatically to documents x, y, and z?
I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

Answer:Word Document within another document

The only simple way is to go to Insert, Object, Create from file and choose to insert your file as a link (these are 2003 instructions - would be similar in 2007, though.) However, you will then get a questions about the file having links and do you want to update...every time you open the file.
You could also just insert some text and hyperlink it to the other file.
Finally, someone could probably write some VBA that would insert the file and update it every time you opened it.

This is a new hijacking to me. One of my friends emailed a completely innocent photo to another friend. When the second friend opened the email, in addition to the intended picture a large number of pornographic images had been added. Both friends are on Wanadoo broadband. Both have up-to-date antivirus and are firewalled. I have suggested running Asquared on both computers. Have any forum members heard of this problem, and does anyone know how it happens?

Please consider this scenario and tell me what might have happened. My wife is a late-comer to computing, having only been using email (Outlook Express) for a few months. Yesterday she replied to an email from a friend. The friend alerted my wife to the fact that my wife's email had been copied to another person (a relative who is in my wife's email address book). My wife did not intend to Cc: the third person. No harm in it (message was innocuous chit-chat). But we're trying to figure out how this could have happened.

The only two possibilities I could imagine:

1) My wife somehow accidentally added the second recipient. I can't imagine how this could have occurred. She would have had to accidentally hit the "Cc:" button then accidentally scroll down the address list to the address in question. (The name isn't visible without scrolling.)

2) Some sort of virus that takes a message **that is actively being written** and randomly appends one address from the Address book to the "Cc:" field. I assume there are viruses that could pull a message from the Inbox or Sent directory, then add an address of its choosing (that it either supplies or pulls from the user's Address book), then sends the message. But what are the chances this could occur to a message that is being actively written? Ever heard of such? And what would be the motive/benefit to the virus-writer?

I'd appreciate anyone's insight re: (1) how an address f... Read more

Answer:Address added to email Cc: field

1) seems the more probable cause; it is often easy to add a CC address from the address list (for example) if you are not attending to what you are doing.
2. I don't see why a virus would WANT to do something like that; as you wrote, the motive for doing so seems unclear. If this has happened only once, and not on a regular and consistent basis,it would not be a virus. Just for ease of mind, though, you might want to test this by having her send several messages to your E-mail address to see if there is a unwanted CC and watch what she does when composing the test messages.
Cheers,
John

I added an email account to my husband's laptop Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (he's on Vista) so that he could view work emails at home. It seemed successful and shows up when I press the "send receive" button with a drop down menu. However when I go to the new email account and press "inbox" a dialogue box flashes up very quickly and I can't even read what it says! I tried changing the profile settings to "prompt each time you open" but it wanted me to go through the whole new account installation thing again - which took me ages! Am I going to have to do that all over again?

Answer:added email account but can't open

Does his work have outlook anywhere option or does he have a webmail option, he should be asking at work what options to access email when not on site.

Is he connecting to his work network via vpn before checking email?

Hi, whenever I receive an email, the senders address is automatically added to my system, is it possible to stop this?
Regards....Mike

Answer:How do you stop email addresses being added?

If you are using Outlook Express go to Tools, Options, Send tab and UN check "Automatically put people I reply to in my Address Book"

If you are using another email app post back.

I try to add my Yahoo email server to Edge and it gets stuck at the function "Sinchronizing"; it goes no further.
If I remove it and try again, the same thing happens again and again.
Gmail, instead, was correctly added the first time.
Thanks for any help.
