Preferred Solution: Pop Ups, Awola, Sloooow Comp, Help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Pop Ups, Awola, Sloooow Comp, Help!

already fixed it, didnt know how to just delete the topic, thanks.

Question: Awola

Hi,

I've tried to clean Awola off of my system by piecing together what to do from the treads in this forum, and it appears to have removed the pop-ups. Can you guys take a look at my HJThis log and let me know if I missed anything? Also, please let me know if I should post anything else to be reviewed.

Thanks very much

thanks alot!

Answer:Awola

You're welcome and welcome to BC. I split your post away into it's wn topic as that one is still working and you are further along. Always mke your own topic it is the better method and keeps things from being confused. As in The stpe for you to do is not the step for them, thanks. I would recommend you do this step now. Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state. The easiest and safest way to do this is:Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point. Then go to Start > Run and type: CleanmgrClick "OK".Click the "More Options" Tab.Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all ... I'm infected with Awola.

I don't know if that's what it's called exactly, and there could be more to my problem than that; but there are other threads on this very problem. As far as I could tell, netiquette on MajorGeeks says I should make my own thread rather than invade someone else's.

If I'm wrong, I'm very sorry for having made a redundant thread.

Symptoms:

- A yellow triangle with a black exclamation point in it sitting in my task bar. It spawns a large, intrusive word bubble telling me I'm infected with spyware and that Windows will download the Awola anti-spyware program if I click the bubble.

- My system will freeze for several seconds at a seemingly random frequency. It always unfreezes, and anything I've done during the 'frozen' period (words I've typed, things I've clicked on, etc.) eventually happens after things come unfrozen.

What I was doing when I first noticed the infection:

- I'd been gone for two days, and my computer had been left on. When I came back I noticed my internet browser was open, and the word bubble was staring at me. I don't believe anyone touched my computer while I was gone.

Hopefully I've attached everything properly.

I did an AVG scan, but the log reads:

I followed the directions in the "read me first and do these thi... Read more

Is your copy of Spywar Doctor a paid version or free trial? If free, uninstall it now.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Question: Awola Bug?

There's a little bubble on the right side of my screen, near the clock, that keeps popping up (and won't go away, which is very annoying), saying "Your computer is infected!" Unknowingly, I clicked it and it presented me with "Awola Anti-Spyware 6.0" or something to that effect. I Googled Awola and found out that it was a rogue anti-spyware program, or something. So, I checked out Add/Remove Programs, and it wasn't in there. So I went through the Start menu to Uninstall Awola, and it said it was removed successfully, but the bubble will still not go away.

I am completely computer-stupid and have no idea what to do. Any help?

I searched previous threads about this pesky malware, but I think my problem might be a little different...
So my computer automatically shut down, and then after rebooting I noticed a popup (from the taskbar only) telling me that my computer is infected and that I should download "special antispyware"...

I haven't clicked it, and don't plan on it, BUT I'm wondering if my computer is already infected ( I ran spybot and AVG and both found no infections.) and if not how do I stop that pop up from well popping up.

Thanks

Answer:Not sure if I have awola yet...

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can try running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Question: Awola Removal

dealt with AWOLA removal today. here are the following steps used to remove it:

0. DISABLE System Restore.

1. download, install and update Malwarebytes AntiMalware removal tool.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

2. reboot your system into Safe Mode with networking.

3. verify that you have the latest update of Malwarebytes by performing the update again.

4. perform a FULL SCAN with Malwarebytes and, after the scan is complete, remove all items in the list.

5. perform a search on your computer for the following:
*awola*.*
this will search for ANY file in your system with the word 'awola' anywhere within its name, regardless of the file extension. DELETE any 'awola' files.

6. open the registry (ie. regedit) and do a search for 'awola' and remove any items you find.

7. perform another scan with Malwarebytes to be certain your system is clean.

8. restart your system.

if anyone has comments, please share them.

Question: awola virus

I am running windows xp and believe I caught the awola virus probably bundled with a lot of other things.
Ok, all I really want to do is copy my files to my external hard drive so I can reformat my computer. But, the virus has taken away my administrator status. It has disabled copying files to my external hard drive or dragging and dropping files. I cannot install Norton antivirus. The error message is "Setup was unable to update the MSI system component. If this problem continues please contact Microsoft at www.microsoft.com". I try to open my network connections, and they won't open.

Is my best bet just paying for the phishing scheme and going along with awola? Will it give me back these capabilities after I have paid, so I can reformat my computer?

Please help. I am desperate.

Answer:awola virus

Oh, I am also considering buying XoftSpySE. I downloaded the program of the internet, and it did locate many corrupt files. However, I am worried if I purchase it, I will not be able to install it fully and use it as I wasnt able to install Nortan Antivirus from disk. Is this a legitimate fear, or did this program already install, and when I purchase the license key, it will simply remove the corrupt files?

I hope I explained this well. Please reply.

Awola is driving me crazy!! And just about the time I get started on another paper, I get a pop-up. I can't tell you how many times I have had to re-connect to this site just to finish this thread.
I wasn't able to perform a Windows Update because the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool wouldn't install. (KB892130).

Answer:Awola & numerous pop-ups

Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Hi can anyone assist me? I am trying to repair my cousin's computer which appears to have Awola installed on it.

I also unable to get the computer to detect any wireless signals even after manually entering the settings for my network. In addition, the user also installed SystemTech Spyware Cleaner. Is this is a good program to use? Am I better off using Windows Defender?

Question: Awola Invastion

Good Day Doctors, I'm helping another friend with their system. It looks like they got caught in one of those sites that pull you in and the next thing you know the software is on your system. I trying to uninstall a program called AWOLA. It states that it is an ANTI -SYPWARE and the system has been infected. I tried to uninstall it but no luck. It seems you have to buy the program to have the option available to uninstall it.

Has anyone heard of this program and how can I get it off my friend's system?
Thx in advance

My Bosses computer got hit with AWOLA before finding your site I tried to fix it. We run McaFee antivirus. His firewall was down, which has been fixed.

His computer runs XP Pro, he can do what he needs to do however, he still is getting the message poping up. Your computer is infected.

Yes, I deleted files and some registry stuff already. I ran spybot and found a few more files. On the last run of spybot there are not offending files showing. Is there any way of ridding that annoying message?

Thanks,

Do you use MusicMatch Jukebox?

You need to go back and follow the instructions in step 1 of the READ ME for MSconfig. You must not use MSconfig to control any startups or services. Select Normal Startup mode and remain in that state.

Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Hello TechGuy users,
I am a new user to TechGuy after my friend had an encounter with... AWOLA.
They said they were getting pop-ups even if not on the internet and their whole Compaq Windows XP Laptop is slowing down. I told them to get Spybot Search & Destroy and update to the newest version and they did. They scanned their whole computer and they destroyed some AWOLA software, but it is still there.

What should they do?
Thanks,

Had a recent problem with malware. The main culprits seemed to be Awola, Security Toolbar, Kukkakreck taking over my home page with numerous pop-ups and slow performance. Followed your nine step program and am greatly appreciative for the concise advice. Most of my problems seemed to be solved but I will post the log and hope for the best. I keep getting pop-ups and a little notification at the bottom right of my screen saying: "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection. It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware."

I clicked it and found that it was installing a program "Awola," which I later found to be some sort of spyware or something. I uninstalled and did some Ad Aware scans (both in normal and safe modes), but I keep getting this notification CONSTANTLY. It's really annoying. Can anyone help?

Thanks!!

Hi there, I believe my computer was recently infected by the Awola Virus / Trojan, and I could really use some assistance. I thank you in advance for any suggestions and help, they are appreciated. I'll put up a detailed description here of what's happened so far, and can certainly provide any additional information that may be required. My computer knowledge is okay, but very limited in terms of spyware and troubleshooting complex problems like this one.

Operating System = Windows XP

A couple of days ago I was doing some stuff online at 7:45pm, preoccupied and in somewhat of a rush. I got a popup menu that a trojan had been found, I assumed it was from my McAfee Security Centre (as this has happened several times before) but I didn't really look at it that closely, and selected okay (I think). I then started to receive a bunch of popups about Spyware, and Awola spyware removal program. I kept closing them because I was in a rush, didn't really look that closely, thought it was just ads and may very well have clicked something I shouldn't have. I did see the Awola Program box come up at one point and I thought I attempted to close it, but I may have clicked on something inadvertently.

Upon rebooting later, I realized that the computer was probably infected. I cannot click or open any application, by double-clicking an icon or program name I always receive the same error message (tailored to whatever application I attempted to open). A black empty box a... Read more

Answer:AWOLA VIRUS - HJT log file included

Hello biddle1,

Infection is showing here, so assuming you have not made too made changes since posting this log let's work from what shows here for now.
To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.
To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software's Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start - Programs.
Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop

Then disconnect from net access. Once you have done that, click the downloaded ComboFix.exe file to run the repair.
When starting ComboFix will cause your computer's internal speakers to produce two beeps, and during the start process display two warnings. These are intended to discourage people who are not getting help in the forum from just experimenting with tools they do not understand. Just to inform you so you will understand that the procedures are expected, and okay.

ComboFix will also change the drive autoplay settings there as it's own added security measure. When we have completed all repairs here we will return the default Windows settings.

Hi,

Earlier today I managed to get the Awola malware onto my computer. I have run Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D along with F-Prot anti-virus software. I have also ran Hijackthis! & removed the Awola line. I also ran a search of my computer files & removed all files relating to Awola. I have rebooted my computer & the annoying yellow triangle warning message continues to popup every 30 seconds. Could someone help to squash this pest?

Thanks in advance!

Have an AWOLA infection. was going to use info from this forum which suggested downloading a couple of files to help. But when I try to go to the sites, I get redirected to no page. Can't go anywhere.

Also, when doing a search now to locate and delete AWOLA files I get an error notice and Search shuts down.

Ad-Aware will run then stops about half way through.

Continuously get a little popup about infections. And there is a little yellow triangle on the startup menu bar (lower right) that, if clicked, will start Awola again.

Any suggestion, or do I just through the box away?

Thanks,

You should be able to download this tool. If not, use another machine, and a usb stick or CDR to carry it to the afflicted machine.

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Hi there. I believe I contracted a virus / trojan through Awola 6.0 a few weeks back. I started a thread in the 'Am I Infected' section, here's the link for that full thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/143729/infected-by-awola-60-and-could-really-use-some-help-removing-it/Long story short, I believe this virus was contracted on Wednesday, April 23 around 745pm. My operating system is Windows XP. Whenever I double-click on any .exe file I get an all-black window, and a little window above it with an error message similar to this: "16-bit MS-DOS SubsystemC:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Winamp.InkThe NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.CS:054d IP: 013d OP: f0 85 38 90 3a Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." I can right-click certain programs and select "Run As" to use them, but can't double-click on anything. I also think this virus has taken over Administrator duties, changed my registry and is preventing me from properly installing programs. It was also preventing me from running anti-virus scans, but I believe we have found a way around this, and I was finally able to process a scan with DSS (and Hijack This). I also did a scan using the Kaspersky scanner. I will copy and paste all logs below. Thanks in advance for all your help. A big thanks in advance.Windows XP Professional SP2I am working on a friend's PC that was hit with Awola 6. He followed removal procedures described at http://www.spyware-techie.com/awola-or-awo...-removal-guide/He brought me the computer with no signs of the Awola 6 files or registry entries mentioned in the link above yet his network adapter stops receiving packets only about a minute after the Windows desktop has booted.I used system restore to take him back to before the attack but no help. Ran Smitfraud again and no help. I weeded through the running processes and ensured that there was no proxy set up in Internet options.Since the system has no available network connection I wasn't able to run the Kaspersky online scanner.I ran DSS and here is the log: Please note that I didn't have the computer hooked up to the router at the time of the DSS scan. Hi everyone-

I'm trying to help my younger brother get his computer functioning properly.

Within the last couple of weeks, he's acquired the AWOLA problem, the machine runs incredibly slow and also his home page starts out at something completely different even though we've changed it back many times.

I've gone through the 5 steps and this is what I have.
Thank you all for your help.

Hello, new to the forum, think this is great learning for a novice like me and appreciate the help if I could get it here.

I have the AWOLA virus/scarewware on my system. My virus scan picks it up as Generic FakeAlert.b

A warning is posted on my right hand lower toolbar that says "Windows has detected syware infection. It is recommended to use a special antispyware to prevent data loss etc.."

I went through the 5 steps posted here and created this log, I hope I didn't screw this up.

Answer:AWOLA Removal and Your computer is infected! Popup continuous

I'm not exactly sure at what time it happened or what I was doing, but the "Awola Anti-spyware 6.0" program is installed on my computer and won't uninstall. A pop-up box is constantly at the bottom right-hand corner of the taskbar saying Your computer is infected! , recomending that I use the tool to prevent data loss.

Also - on another note - I'm unable to use any open-source internet browers (ie. Firefox, Opera, Bonjour...). When I attempt to use Firefox (for example) I'm given the message "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com." It won't open any site. I'm given a similar message when I try to any other browser other than IE. The browser suggests that if my computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, to make sure make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. I don't think this is the problem - but I really can't be sure. I never did anything to change these settings - nor would I know where to go to do such a thing. I'm not sure if these two things are related as the internet problem happened a good 2 months after the Awola problem started.

I really appreciate any help. From viewing other members' responses, your help seems very effective.

Thanks!

Question: Sloooow...

- Hopefully this is the right place to post this.
What I'm Running:
- 2.8 HT GHz Intel 1meg of Cache, 800 mHz FSB with intel cooling and sink.
- AsRock mobo with 8X's AGP, 800 FSB support
- 1 gig dual channel ram
- 80 gig IDE HD
- Win XP home
- 400 watt PS (not the greatest but has dual fans)
- Chaintech FX 5700 (not LE) VC
- LG CD - R/RW
- Toshiba DVD Dual Layer
- Norton Internet Security 2006
- Norton System Works 2002
- Newest Video Driver
- Win updated
- MS Anti - Spyware
- scans clean (NoSpyware and virus)
Problem:
- Very slow on start up, it takes like 3 minutes to finish drawing the icons (Shortcuts) when I start it.
- I looked at the start up under MSCONFIG and checked off a few of them that were un - needed.
- De fraged HDD
For the life of me I cannot figure out why it got slow. Could it be the PS dying and not giving enough wattage to the CPU or VC.
Could it be the VC dying?
I will try and re-format the HDD and reinstall everything (which will be hard as I have to find all the F***ing reg. #'s for the software.
- Is there any good Diagnostics software that I should get??Free is best but I will pay for a good one as this is pissing me off.
Thanks for the help

Wooooooah!

Way too much Norton.....shut it all down and see how things work.
You've got enough Norton on there to stop a battle ship dead in its tracks.

Norton will not find and remove all the popular viruses, so that's no good.
MS Anti-Spy is only one AS program......you need more than that to completely de-bug your system. Here's my personal list of Must-Have software.

I suggest every person having any Virus or Spyware issues get these programs

Question: sloooow

Gentlemen,

For several weeks now, my computer has been running VEEERY slow. Programs will crash with the message "Not responding", but may start up again in 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.

I have updated & run Adaware, AVG, Malwarebyte, Spybot, Spysweeper and MS Malware remover. They all claim to find nothing wrong. HijackThis gave me a log but I don't know where to send it.

I have gone through the "Preparation Guide ... " and "Slow computer? use this..." but the wretched slowness continues. Bill Hely, author of "The Hacker's Nightmare", suggested you might be able to help.

I hope there might be someone who could look through my HJT log to see if there's something I'm missing.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

So sometimes my PC starts acting really slow and my internet (firefox) just stops loading pages and I have to restart my computer to get it to work. I'm not entirely sure if it's a virus or possibly just my internet, but sometimes on XBoxLive I will get a really bad connection and then it's almost impossible to fix it. It's really frustrating!

Question: Sloooow

While I'm in here have another question. I just bought this pc last Sept. It's a VAIO Tower-Less Mac (my daughter said so), anyway it takes almost 5 minutes for it start up, any suggestion there? I don't think this is normal.
Thankz

Answer:Sloooow

First what is the PC model number and did you buy it new? Did it ever boot faster? I have no idea what a "VAIO Tower-Less Mac" is. VAIOs are made by Sony. They normally run the Microsoft Windows operating system -- not Apple MAC. However Sony does make a "Netbook" (like a small laptop) which can have a MAC operating system, however I don't believe it is sold that way.

If it has a MAC OS operating system, then this post belongs in the Apple forum, not here.

If it has a Microsoft Windows Operating system, post a HijackThis Scanlog >>

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

First off, GMER is at war with my system.
I've run it three times.
First time it just crashed. Second time, it ran for over 6 hours and would not allow me to save the report as anything other than a log.
Last time, it simply froze up when I tried to save it. (I have the .log file it let me save but it's so small, there's no reason to zip it.

This started a little while ago in close proximity to the time I "UPGRADED" my browser to IE8.
I went through the Manage Add Ons menus and deleted/removed everything (Except BING Of course which they have insured you can't get rid of)

It's just SLOOOOOW...very slow.
And it seems everything is getting very slow.
Granted I know that five computer years is about 10 dog years or 77 people years but...I has what I has so I'm tryin to get the most out of it.
The sudden slowdown in performance doesn't appear to be age related.
-

I cannot attach an ARK.TXT because there isn't one.
I gave up and didn't want to try running GMER yet again. I lose 6 or more hours of being able to use the computer when I run it and never get to where it allows me to save the report

I will post what little GMER produced following this. Trust me, it doesn't need to be zipped. There's pretty much nothing to Zip. The Attach file from DDS is, well, attached...

Thank you in advance for your help...

Answer:Sloooow all of a sudden

Greetings grumpops and Welcome to the Forums,

I suspect your issue relates to some of the out dated and exploited software and the questionable file sharing program. Sharing files is a quick and sure way to turn your system into an expensive brick.

I would also ask that you remove/uninstall/delete any programs or files (to include music and/or video files) that you know with certainty were downloaded using the Pando program's shared server.

In addition, uninstall these:
Pando
Java(TM) 6 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) 6 Update 13

Reboot your system when finished uninstalling and let us know if you noticed any improvement whatsoever. Thanks!

Answer:Sloooow Startup

You can try to start in safe mode (if seems driver issue) or restore the system to a point before you did the changes.

Question: SLOOOOW Computer

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop that until recently has been great. However, over the past couple weeks, the speed of it has significantly slowed. It takes a long while to load programs, browse the web, etc. I am using most of the memory (1.73 Gigs free out of 27.9 gigs). However, it's been filled about this much for a long time, so this new slowness is rather strange.

I've run all the cleanup programs. I tried to defrag but it told me I needed more free space to do so.

Might there be programs running in the background that I am not aware of?

Other suggestions? I can't take this anymore. Please help. Thanks!

Answer:SLOOOOW Computer

Hi Chris,

I would first go over to the malware section and make sure your laptop is cleared of any malware. First, read this:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html

If you are still having issues, the post a HJT log in the Analysis forum. If you are still having troubles after being cleared by the Security Team, come back to this thread. I will know if you respond.

Question: Sloooow printing

One of my flock has this problem with Win7
I guess all to do with spooler memory allocation
Is this so?
what is the remedy please.

Answer:Sloooow printing

There could be so many reasons for this. What is being printed? Some pdf files do print slowly for example. What is the printer, how much memory of its own does it have, does it have the right W7 drivers? Is it 32 or 64 bit? How much RAM does the pc have?

We use this desktop mostly for email, browsing & surfing the internet. Most of the time, after first turning it on, or coming out of 'standby', it loads pages very slowly. Maybe 1 to 2 minutes per new page. Then occasionally, like now, it runs faster. No real pattern that I can detect. I run Avira, Ad-Aware & Spybot SD on a regular basis. Defrag also. Very frustrating.

This is an older e-machine running WinXP, SP3. Celeron CPU 2.93Ghz, 632 MB Ram.

Question: Sloooow computer

Hi guys. Im ashamed to admit I fell for this. But a couple days ago I got an IM from one of my friends saying to click the link to see pictures. I had to download a .com file and I did and clicked on it. My brother also downloaded a free DVD player that came with lots of adware. My computer started going REAL slow so I disabled everything in startup. But some things are still comging back. And I get popups every 15 seconds or so. Seems to only be when Im actually using the computer though. Here is my HJT log. Any ideas? Ive run adaware and antivir multiple times. A few just wont leave. Particularly TR/Spy.Agent.dg.2.B hope thats fixable.
Thanks guys

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Unfortunately you posted your log in the wrong forum. Also you are using an older version of HJT. Please follow these instructions to get you set in the right place

Download and install: HiJackThis.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.

IMPORTANT!!!
Create a New Topic and include a fresh HJT log in the HiJackThisLog Help Forum and Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into your new topic.

A Moderator/ Security Team Analyst will give you instructions.

***DO NOT TRY TO FIX ANYTHING, MAJOR DAMAGE CAN BE DONE TO YOUR SYSTEM IF THIS TOOL IS USED INCORRECTLY, PLEASE WAIT FOR AN ANALYST/MODERATOR TO GIVE YOU INSTRUCTIONS***

Always describe your problem and any programs you have used to try to resolve your issue. Your description can go a long way to solving/repairing your particular issue.

Hey guys ... I have a Compaq Presario V2000. My questions is two fold. The other day, I started having trouble with dvd/cd playback on the machine, and at around the same time burning capabilities slowed to a crawl (3hrs to do a dvd) ... any ideas what I can do to fix this? I am a novice to computers so please go gently on me!

Answer:Help please! New here with sloooow burner

How much RAM?
Free HDD Space?
What software are you using?
How fast is the DVDRW you're burning on?
How you cleaned the drive using CD/DVD disc cleaner?
Get a can of dust remover spay while you're at it..
Make sure you using AC electric power and not DC (battery power)

Expect anywhere from 2 to 4hrs to burn on to a dvd if your using HQ/SP.. That goes for some desktop systems beside laptops. Make sure you turn off any AV/Spyware and don't download or surf the internet while that's going on. Don't load the screen saver either..

Hi

Make sure you have already run Adaware, Spybot S & D(check for updates) as these will do a preliminary clean first. Some files below may not be present after running the above programs.

Then....
Turn off your System Restore SEE HERE Reinstate it when your log is cleaned and then create a new restore point.Close your browser window and run hjt in safe mode... HOW TO RUN SAFE MODE and have "Hijack This" fix all the following items in the list below by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting "fix checked".If any EXE files have been selected go into HijackThis/Config/Misc/Tools/ and open process manager. Select the EXE files (if they are there) and click Kill process before deleting.

Folders that have been highlighted RED in the log will need to be uninstalled.Check first as some folders maybe uninstalled via the Add/Remove program.
Files highlighted in BLACK in the log will need to be removed from your hard drive.

Make sure to have your system set to show hidden files and folders.. HOW TO SHOW FILES When done Download Cleanup and run it to clean out the temp folders ..Then please get HJT v1.99. reboot and post a new log when finished...

Hi,My PC is running Windows 7 64bit and has 4gb Ram with an AMD Phenom(tm) II x4 955 processor 3.20 gb. When I first built the PC it would take roughly 15 seconds from pressing the power button to it being ready for me to type my password. After doing so would take another 15secs at the most to be at the desktop. However, for a while now this has increased dramatically to the point that 2 minutes in it is still loading up the standard applications.I know the PC is by no means the fastest of PC's but my work PC takes less time to boot now and it is running Win XP, with production of the PC stopping in 2004, making my PC embarrasingly slow.I have run the likes of CCCleaner and have run "SUPERAntiSpyware" (log below) and will run "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)" and post the log once finished.Question is, have I got some kind of infections on the PC?Many Thanks guysRichard

Hello all, I am new here and am looking to solve some issues with my computer. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that it seemed to process a little slower, pages took much longer to load and in general just did not seem right. I ran search and destroy and removed some stuff but it hasn't gotten any better. I looked into system restore and the restore point only go back to when I noticed the slow down, not much use there. I also noticed I cannot access the windows update site. Below is a highjackthis log run today. Hopefully some will be able to help me with this. Question: Sloooow computer.

A couple weeks ago my computer suddenly started running very very slow. Some examples: 15 mins to boot up, 30 secs to open IE, 10-15 seconds to open a folder. The processor is an AMD 1900 running at 1.6 gighz. The computer is now always slow, not just sometimes. During the delays the processor nor hard drive are working. The computer just sits there, sometimes with an hour glass, and waits. Then, right before opening whatever I have selected, the hard drive and processor will work and the item will open. One oddity is that if I, say, open an MP3, it takes 20-30 seconds to open Winamp and start playing, but if I close Winamp and immedaitely open a different MP3, there is no delay, it is nearly instant, like it used to be. Doesn't matter if it is Word, IE or an MP3. If I have just opened it, 9 times out of 10 it will open the second time with no delay.
I figured it was a software thing, so I repaired Windows XP. No improvement.
I reinstalled Windows. No improvement.
I reformatted and reinstalled. No change.
I formatted a different Hard Disk and installed windows. No change.
The actual formatting took forever, somewhere around 60 hours. It was running slowly even in the installation shell.
I ran memtest86 for 6 hours and had 0 errors. I think it was running slowly too, it only got through 12 or 13 tests in 6 hours.
I don't know what else to try, I had made zero hardware changes prior to the slow down.

Anyone have any ideas what could cause a computer to ... Read more

I have run Spybot, Adaware and done a Cleanup function. Then I ran the HJT log below.

I am looking at a friends pc for her, have identified some trojans, using AVG. I had to do this via safe mode as on normal boot, pc keeps rebooting. I cleared all virus/trojans, started pc up and after all programs loaded, did same again, I think it it MSN messenger that is the problem as when this loaded, this seemed to kick in the reboot. Also there was a LIVE pop up , porn related which also generated a shut down. I have tried to uninstall the MSN Messenger & MSN messenger assist, but the system just shuts down when I try this - Any suggestions? Will I have to just format the disk & start all over again ? Thanks in advance (o/s is xp, fully patched, so she says)

Answer:pc keeps rebooting and very very sloooow !

Try unistalling Messenger in Safe Mode. The I would run your anti-virus again whilst still in safe mode. Run Safe Mode with Networking, this should allow internet connection.

i just fixed a problem i had been having with this thing, had to reformat the whole thing, i tried defrag and ad ware checks but my internet is just going sooo slow...when i see the bytes received and sent, received is up to 3 million and sent is only 2000, when usually it's the other way around.....i don' tknow how to fix it, it's just soo sluggish , annoying as anything, can anybody help? thanks,
Colleen
ps.. i use windows 2000 professional if you need to know lol

Answer:internet going sloooow

How are you connected, directly to a cable/dsl modem? Dialup?

Have you checked to make sure you don't have any of the latest viruses (Slammer, sobig)? Are all your OS updates, patches up to date?

Double check your NIC settings. If you're on Autonegotiate, or its equivalent, try changing it to 100Mbps Full Duplex, or 10Mbps Half Duplex. If no effect, change back to Autonegotiate.

For the past few months our computer has been creeping. The internet is sluggish, it takes longer to start and sometimes it locks up while surfing the net with a (not responding) message requiring a restart. I have norton anti virus and spyware doctor. I dont believe I have a virus. Is there a way to see if its just an inexpensive part i need to replace or do i need to get a whole new computer. The computer is a pentium 4 CPU 3.60ghz with 2.00 gb of ram. We dont play games just surf the net and pay bills etc... We have windows XP home edition. All aspects of the computer have just seemed to slow down.

Answer:Computer is getting sloooow.

Your specs you listed are perfect for running XP, so you don't need to buy a new PC. What I'd do is download, install, and update Malawarebytes Anti-Malaware. Do a scan and remove anything it says to. Then update and scan with Norton as well. Report back if your PC speeds up after doing this.Ask and Answer. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Vista SP1. I got a virus about 2 weeks ago and re installed Vista. Everything worked fine for a week, then the computer became slow at some point. I use the computer for music production so I noticed everything slowed down because my projects were suddenly overloading the system.

Anyway, I have tried to work what is wrong. I have scanned with Kaperksy, Ad Aware, Spybot and not found anything. I have checked device manager and everything is working fine. There is plenty of space on the hard disk. I have checked programs running at startup and disabled any unnecessary. I have checked disks for errors.

So what else could it be? And everything worked fine for a week after re installing the operating system, then everything seemed to suddenly slow down. I had been installing a lot of software, but only programs I had on before I re installed the operating system.

Any help appreciated

Question: Games are SLOOOOW

whenever i play Tribes (or any other game for that matter) my cpu jumps from around 2-5% to 100%... so it slows down my performance quite a bit, I've reformatted my comp and reinstalled the drivers and everything but it's stillllll being a poon

Sys specs=
Intel Celeron 2.20ghz
768 RAM
GeForce FX 5200 AND Crappy Mobo Vid card: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

I switch from my geforce to my onboard just to see if anything changes but it doens't ;/

Answer:Games are SLOOOOW

100% cpu usage during games is normal, don't worry about it.
if the games themselves are running slow it most likely is your video card becoming overloaded, try reducing resolution/AA/AF. If the games just started slowing down, let us know.

Question: Sooooo Sloooow

Hi

A friend's Computer has XP Home and is running Slooow.

Hijack Log below. Safe Mode was possible yesterday, but no now - it hangs on Mup.sys

Drive C has 6 bad sectors though. Running 128Mb RAM OK up until a few weeks ago and nothing new installed.

500 items removed with Ewido and Ad-aware with no difference - maybe worse.

Thanks

Question: Sloooow Win7

I'm a newbie so please be gentle.

I installed Build 7100 (32 bit) about 6 weeks ago as part one of a new build. The end result is intended to be a Dual Boot Hackintosh. Part one is installing the windows OS and making sure everything works well.

Hardware:

DFI DK P45-T2RS Plus (It was either this or a Gigabyte mobo which seem to have more problems)
Intel Quad @ 2.33 GHz
4GB RAM Corsair
1.5TB Seagate HDD
DVD and Blu-Ray burners

All drivers are current as of 7/13/09 but I haven't upgraded the Bios.

From the beginning opening folders has been very slow. On XP in
Windows Explorer I was accustomed to swiftly navigating through folders, at least a click a second. On Win 7 every click takes 4-5 seconds. Navigating is painful.

I run CCleaner a couple of times a week and defrag daily because I create and manipulate a lot of files.

Network operations work as fast as they did under XP including the internet except when I access my WHS files from Windows Explorer. I have the same 4 to 5 second lag. If I RDP in to the server I don't have the lag. I also stream video from the server to my Win 7 rig (view it in SageTV) without any problem.

It seems to me the problem is Windows Explorer but I don't know how to fix it.

Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated.

This week, I've been emailing ppl and it has taken up to 3 days for an email to be sent - from one part of england to another! the odd thing is that i have sent multiple emails to the same person and they have been arriving in very differnet patterns; some emails have arrived instantly whilst others have taken up to three days. Both addreses are hotmail, and this has never been a problem before...Any ideas would be gratefully received and thanks in advance.

Answer:Hotmail going sloooow

I have been having similar problems sending to a Hotmail address from my companies own domain. Some arrive several hours late and others not at all!
