Programs Slow To Load, Hang, Or Don't Load At All

Question: Programs Slow To Load, Hang, Or Don't Load At All

Hey.My computer has been operating excruciatingly slow over the past few months, and I have no idea why. I'm pretty new to computers, as far as, being able to fix them myself. I run ESET-NOD32 as anti-virus; Zone Alarm as a firewall; and Prevx. I also regularly scan with Ad-Aware SE, Spybot- S&D, AVG, and Spyware Blaster (which I don't think that I am using correctly).I followed the steps that you have outlined in the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting" but was unable to get the on-line scanners to work (all 3). I was using IE at the time. All my scans come up clean, but programs are loading too slow, or not at all. Preferred Solution: Programs Slow To Load, Hang, Or Don't Load At All

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts. When it's finished it will produce a log. Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply. Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause the program to freeze/hang. Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask. Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

I have 2 PCs exhibiting the same problem, W7 Home (XPS 8700) and W7 Prof (Inspiron 580). After 24-48 hrs, any/all programs fail to load. They show up in Task Manager 'Processes' but fail to load. A program already running continues to run (e.g. IE or Chrome), but nothing new. The 'Services' window in Task Manager is kibosh'd ... the window is blank. The system will not shutdown properly (hangs on 'Logging Off') and I have to hard boot both. They both use Norton NIS, and that is my suspicion. Below is a partial list from the Events log, but I'm not sure that's it. Anybody seen this, and point me where to go ... I can't find anything specific on the web.

PS - how does MS Essentials compare to NIS for W7. Thanks.

Answer:Partial PC Hang - Programs won't Load

Good hunch. We've seen enough problems with Norton here over the years that are solved by uninstalling it that I would do that using the Norton Removal Tool, then replace it with MSE to test the difference:

Then continue working through the other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Having problems on my W10 desktop PC. Booting up the system was hanging at login screen after entering in my p/w. Made it past the login screen and able to get to desktop, AV and other apps begin to load and everything seems to hang. Brought up task manager and it just froze as well. Restarted a few times and it just appears to be stuck in this loading state. 4790K, ASrock z97 Extreme 6/3.1, Samsung 850 Evo, H110i. I was trying to start getting this still rather new build dialed in. Reset everything in UEFI to default. Any tips/suggestions?

ok this is gonna be a bit long but i want the details there. the issue pc is my old pc. it has windows 7 its an asus msn-la motherboard i cloned this drive and used it in my new pc. after a few months my new pc's drive died and i took the old drive from the issue pc(witch was not giving issues at this time) and stuck it into my new pc until my replacement drive came. when i got the replacement drive i cloned the drive again onto the replacement drive and then put the new drive in the new pc had no issues there. put the old drive back into the issue pc (this is when issues started) the pc booted up to the windows desktop loading screen fast but once it got there it sat there for like 5 min before loading into windows. once it loaded into windows it was un usable for around 10 min while it loaded background stuff. once it finally loads into windows if i try to open anything its still responding extremely slow. is there anything i could do to fix this or is this going to me a re install only situation? i did try to use a windows 7 disk to do a startup repair but it claimed i couldn't do it because i dident install from that disk.

Thank you!

Answer:Taskbar takes unusually long to load and any programs run in that period, hang

If you don't think it's malware...why did you run ComboFix, which is a tool whose sole purpose is to assist in neutralizing malware?  Additionally...this topic is posted in a malware forum, not a forum for dealing with Windows or hardware issues.
Since you have run it...I suggest that you post your CF log for review at BC Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs - .
Please follow Steps 6-8 of Preparation Guide, Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help - and post the requested logs, along with your ComboFix log, in the forum reflecting the Prep Guide.
Once that is done, this topic will be closed to avoid confusion.
Thanks .

Hello..I have been sent over here now to post a HJ this log and do some other scans. Unfortunatly this computer will not go on line yet because of its condition. I did tyr to do the "5 steps" to the best of my understanding but they did not do well because of the inability to install programs. I hope I can get direction and get this thing going and on line again.

I have an older dell tower with xp/sp2. It was a pretty basic computer even in it's day with a 20G hard drive and 256mb ram but it worked well for surfing and such. Lately it has been taking forever to load any program, firefox, outlook express, etc.

Once they are loaded they run fine but it's driving me crazy. At first I thought I had a virus or malware but an avast scan came back fine and I updated ad-aware and found win32.trojanspy.banker and deleted it but it didn't help.

Any suggestions aside from quit being cheap and buy a new computer? lol. I do plan to get a new one this coming year but would like to keep this one and set it up in my daughters room until something major goes wrong with it.

Answer:programs slow to load???

Many times a slow comp has been attributed to not enough RAM, as your computer seems pretty basic :cool lol. Anyway, take a look here. It details removing programs you don't need, how to free up some precious space:drool, etc.

If it still doesn't work, either install more memory RAM cards if you're comfortable, or get a new computer:-D. (I didn't mention the cheap part)

I have a HP pavilian 7965 with windows xp home edition ver 2002, sp2. It has an 80gig hard drive, a dvd drive and cd drive. There is also a 3 1/2 floppy drive. It is very very slow to fire up and when it finally does it takes equally as long to open any programs. Then it will freeze up. I can load it in safe mode and it runs quite a bit faster but I cannot load any spyware stuff or read cd programs either. It has a dvd and cd drive. Pentium 4 is the chip. I put ad aware and counterspy on it, and it went ok and tried to put spybot but it wouldn't load. I have hijack thhis on it too but do not know how to interpert what it tells me. Is there anything I should or can do to get this computer to preform as it did when it was new??? Thank yoy for whatever help you may afford me.

Answer:Slow to load and will not run any programs

I have since booted in safe mode and am able to run counterspy and ad aware in safe mode...unfortunatly nothing showed to be harmful...what to do, any ideas for me?

Some programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.

What are the causes and solutions?

Answer:Some Programs Slow to Load

I dunno, I use Quicken 2010, it always pops right open. What programs are loading when the computer starts? If you have certain AV programs, it may be performing extra monitoring on the exe files you are clicking on, before allowing them to start.

Hi folks.
Ive been a long time reader of these forums and have fixed many problems of my own just by reading through the threads.
Unfortunately it's come a time where I need to post due to the fact that I cant solve this problem I'm having.
When I reboot or startup my computer, it boots up fine until it gets to the desktop, AVG seems the first to load and that loads normally. after that everything else is very sluggish. Once all the startup items have loaded and mind you there are not alot that I have running at startup. If I try to open a program ie. Firefox, the little hourglass comes up,dissapears after a few seconds then it just sits there like I never clicked anything. 2 minutes later it will pop open, this is with anything even if I crtl-alt-del, it can take anywhere from 1-3 minutes to open. Once they do open up, the computer is fine everything opens and runs normally its only after a reboot.
Im pretty sure I dont have any spyware or viruses, Ive done a defrag, that worked fine. done error checking on the hdd, that found no errors, ran memtest for about half an hour, no errors, tried unchecking everything in the msconfig startup list, no luck.
I have AMD64 3700 San diego
1gig of corsair twinx
120 gig WD HDD
Pioneer DVD burner
Windows xp pro

I did do a hijack this scan and here are the results.
I appreciate the time in helping me solve this annoying little problem I have!

I am new to these forums and to Hyjackthis, so im a bit of a noob towards it for now.

Recently, my computer's been acting very weirdly.

It started with skype; i clicke don the shortcut, the .exe would load on Task Manager but not on my desktop, and simply refused to open. A tree of .exes opened on task manager, i tried to alternate to the program but ended up having to finalize it.

Reinstallign skype, it got fixed.

I don't seem to find any suspisious programs on my processes list; other programs have been having the same behaviour, being so slow and deadlocked to the point I gotta reboot my computer to restart it. I'm not sure if my computer is too slow for it, or if i got some viruses. I ran McAfee and Malawarebytes scans and nothing was detected.

Hi, I have a very annoying problem in that when I select Start - All programs, the menu is very (very!) slow to load I get a grey box the same size as the menu as soon as I click on the button but it can take up to 20 seconds for the full menu to be displayed. Once loaded everything works fine unless I try to reload the menu again for whatever reason when it takes an age to load again. I can recall that there was a registry setting that can be amended to change the delay time in Windows ME which I used once but I have now upgraded to XP and I have no idea if this is still possible and if it is what the reg key would be. I would be very gratfull if anyone has any idea on how to speed up the menu's display time

I don't know what happened, but suddenly the services console takes forever to load, it is "Not responding" but after ~10 min it finally loads and works fine. The same happens for the Palm Desktop. Directory Opus (an explorer replacement) appears on the task manager but won't load at all. The console and palm desktop also appear in the task manager since launch. The system is 99-98% idle during all this. Other parts of the computer seem unaffected. Any ideas where to start? Many thanks,Uriel.

Hi,I recently installed .Net Framework 4.0, this is the only thing that I have really changed or installed to the machine since the problem started. So a day or so after that I noticed that when I get to the Windows XP splash screen at boot up (the black one with the little progression bar and blue thingys moving from left to right) it has become very slow to load. It used to take a couple of seconds, now it seems as though it takes a few minutes, there is also another quick black screen after that that takes maybe 15 seconds to get past but once all of that is loaded the next blue screen loads up fine. Now when the desk top is loaded up everything seems fine...but I noticed my programs load a lot slower than they used to, there is a pretty noticeable delay from when I actually click to open the program and when it actually opens. Everything seems much much slower and delayed/lagged.Another thing that I have noticed is, when downloading a file the computer becomes very choppy, like when dragging a window it will skip across the screen I guess that is how it could be described.I really don't know what could be wrong, I have checked my processes in the task manager and when I'm not running any programs it is at its bare minimum, only about 17 processes running which is normal, haven't noticed any programs in the start up added (its completely empty). I also ran Spybot S&D and that found nothing, I ran Malware bytes and that found one threat but it was listed unde... Read more

Only other things I can suggest are as follows:Go to "Device Manager > Disk drives" and find your main HD. Right click it and select Properties > Policies tab. See if there is a tick in "Enable write caching on the disk". If not give it a whirl. If you are not already using it, try "CCleaner Slim", which gets a lot of rubbish out of the system.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I recently reloaded Win 10 with a clean install, deleting all files and folders, because of this problem.

All programs are slow to load, a revolving circle appears for some time while programs/files area loading, but not all the time. Similarly when attempting to copy photo's etc from the drop down menu - the same and takes up to a minute or so to reappear.

Reboot times appear to be in reasonable,

I use Ccleaner Pro and Malwarebytes Pro 3, in addition to Kaspersky (KIS 2017 ).

I thought at one time a conflict was occurring between Malwarebytes and KIS, but unable to prove it.

Any ideas Please

This is an issue that started a few months ago..I have had fresh installs of windows 10 and linux so it's not an issue with background programs. For example if I open my web browser(or any program) it takes an excessive amount of time to bring it up after a reboot. Thereafter it opens up quickly(cause it's now in the ram I suppose). It sometimes may take about 10 seconds to simply open something like a web browser.

Is it most likely a failing hard drive? I haven't had any other problems but would like to get this fixed. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot from here. I was thinking about buying a replacement drive but would like to make sure of the issue first. Thanks, Nathan

Hello, I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and as of this morning whenever I startup my pc I have about a 10-30 second window maybe (sometimes even shorter) that I can actually get programs to open before my pc just seems to get very slow and nothing at all will open. For example things like ctrl+alt+del takes about 15 seconds before it just goes to a black screen and says the process cannot be completed, whenever I pull up the start menu it will freeze and nothing opens from there, and even trying to refresh the desktop or shutting down/restarting crashes it. I have gone into safe mode with networking to get on Chrome and try to find solutions but nothing has worked. I've ran a full system scan with Malwarebytes and the first time it found only one infection and I quarantined and removed it, but the problem still occurs. I've also done a system restore twice to no avail. I have no more ideas and would greatly appreciate if anyone has a solution to this problem.

About a month ago my computer was infected by Vundo, I have since removed it (seemingly) and am no longer receiving popups, but the computer is still very slow to load programs. Any time I try to launch an application, be it Firefox or Control Panel or even notepad the computer will take minutes to start the application. Once the applications are open they run normally, the only difference is when I need to launch something, as then it will take ages.

In addition, I have McAfee installed, but any time I try to run a scan with it it throws an error:

Here are the problem details:

I've also tried contacting McAfee and using their "Virtual Technician" but they were not able to help.

I run both IE 8 and Firefox on my Dell Dimension system. I'm having problems now with both browsers taking forever to load. This may be a virus or network problem. IE 8 just loaded now after 15 minutes (exactly - I timed it).

- Once it's loaded once, both browsers load in normal amounts of time.
- I haven't downloaded any new add-ons lately unless one browser or the other installed one in the background.
- The problem just started today after a reboot.
- I've also noticed that my network icon in the taskbar doesn't show up anymore when I first boot but by the time IE opens, it has showed up.
- Using ipconfig, I did determine that I am on the network and connected immediately after boot up (router also shows me connected immediately).
- I've tried running IE from the command line with iexplore.exe -extoff. It didn't make any difference. I don't know if this works with IE 8 though.
- When I click to open either web browser, the process shows up right away in Task Manager and remains.
- I have all the latest updates to both browsers that I know of.
- I've run a complete system scan with McAfee (fully updated as of today.)

Now I've run out of ideas on what to try. I appreciate any help!

Greetings gurus. Internet trouble. As the title says, my mail will not load in any browser. Page load is very slow and most things time out at least once. AT&T ran line tests on DSL and everything was clean. Not sure how this could be. Speedtest was run many times and no probs. I even did some gaming which strains everything with no problems. I'm open to the possibility of a virus. Ran Avira and MBAM but haven't gone further. Strangely the wife's Facebook games are a no-go. Also, wireless devices work fine. Heeeeelp!

What tests do i need to make before i reinstall windows ?Avira does not seem to be the problem,i always had it and the machine was fast with it.

How much free space is on drive C?

Have you ever cleaned dust out of it? If you look in the fan vent opening, can you see some dust in there?

What is the status of the battery? How old is it? Ever replaced it? If you run on battery power, how long will the computer run? Can you run that notebook with the battery removed? Have you tried that? Does it run the same as with battery in?

Have you opened Task Manager to see whether certain process(es) are using a lot of CPU resources?

This laptop is very slow to load Windows and programs are very slow to open
Firewall is Avira. Malwarebytes and Spybot search and destroy are both loaded as is HJT
I have culled any programs that I do not expect to use in the near future
This seems to have helped and the computer is useable - but not much fun !!
I was expecting to post a HJT log but noted in the tutorials this program is not regarded too highly anymore
This is my first post and appreciate any assistance

But as I said, about a week ago, my computer started running slower. Startup is fine and still fast. What has changed is the loading of programs will off and on be slow. When I do something within the program, sometimes it will freeze for just a moment before continuing with that process.

With the internet - web pages take extremely slow to load now. And when I click through pages on any website, myspace, facebook, gmail, cnn, whatever, each page within that site takes a while to load. A couple of times Firefox, of all things, has had to shut down unexpectedly. Sometimes it will give me an error message, and sometimes it just closes without any warning.

I have defraged my hard drive, scanned my computer with spybot, adaware, and Trend Micro Anti-Virus. And aside from the few 'low' security bits and pieces here and there, it hasn't picked anything up.

I have 1 GB of RAM on a Windows XP, AMD Athalon 3200+, EMachines computer. My computer is three years old. I have a large hard drive. I'm kind of at a loss and don't know what to do. I'm almost to the point of possibly just going out and buying another computer, but I thought I'd try this as I've heard positive things with the Hijack This program, so I am hoping with this progr... Answer:Computer running very slow takes 20 minutes to load startup programs

do you have a windows XP installation CD matching the version on your computer? i'm not talking about any HP recovery disks.

if yes, go to start, run and type SFC / SCANNOW and press OK. insert the xp cd ito the drive when prompted.

alternatively, you can download missing DLL files from this web site:

I have been having an issue recently that I've encountered once before, but I lost the location of the steps I used to fix the issue.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that is currently running Windows 7. I have a TV plugged in to serve as a second monitor. When the problem first started, my mouse would randomly jump from my secondary screen to my main screen without warning, usually while I was playing World of Warcraft. This problem continues to persist, but now I am also having issues where my computer is booting up incredibly slowly, often approaching 10 minutes needed simply to load up the OS and get to the login screen, and then additional time after that to load up my desktop and programs that are set to autorun on startup.
I ran an Avast scan today to try and figure out if there was a virus problem, and it told me nothing was wrong, but as I was watching it scan, I noticed it was searching through a few Lenovo files... and I have a Dell. I had a virus at one point a little over a year ago that would randomly deselect my current window, often while I was typing, and it was masquerading under a Lenovo file as well, but I can't seem to find the files this time, and I don't have the tell-tale process happening when I check my task manager.
After Avast turned up no results, I ran Malwarebytes in the hopes it would find something that Avast could not, and while it did find and delete 5 files, none of them were the mystery Lenovo files, and my computer conti... Read more

I'm having an issue with my PC when it's under load, like playing a game such as Far Cry 3, or doing video conversions using Handbrake.  Sometimes it black screens & reboots, sometimes freezes, other times a BSoD with a message such as IRQL Not Equal (or something like that), or today I saw Clock Watchdog Timeout for the first time.
I have a Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3, with an AMD Phenom II X6 CPU.  8gb RAM, with a Radeon HD6850 video card.  Windows 8.1  All drivers and BIOS up to date.
After the first few failures, I suspected my video card, so updated drivers, watched temps etc, and in the end took it out, and used the video card built into the mobo.   After a while it did the same thing.
I'm now suspecting either the power supply or CPU.  I see the Clock Watchdog Timeout can be CPU related.  Also, a couple of times when it's crashed and shut down, I can't power back up unless I manually switch the PSU switch off, then back on again.
Here's a minitoolbox output and the latest dmp file, would appreciate any advice on where to start with further software checks, or hardware replacements?

When I click onto a link to download a site, the download will start after a second or two and the little bar at the lower left of the screen will progress quickly a block at a time until the last block and it will sit there for many seconds. Sometime I can re-click again and nudge it to complete the download.
It is annoying and often I will click to often or try to back up to often and go back two or three pages inadvertently because of my impatient double and triple clicking.

My wife's computer , which is newer and which is connected to the same router doesn't seem to have this problem. This has been occurring over the past three months and seems to be increasing.

Thank you Deit, for closing the other thread. I have a father that is the same way. Some people have a tough time being patient with computers LOL. Especially if it wasn't doing that before and you are not used to it. There are many reasons that this particular problem may occure. They range from hardware going bad, to software slowing down your computers performance, to a virus. That said, if you will tell me a bit about your computer, things like what kind it is? how old it is? Hard drive size, processor speed, ect. and what operating system your running, as well as the Service pack it is using, I am certain I will be able to help you resolve this issue without too much trouble. I am now subscribed to this thread and will monitor it for your response.

I am desperate. My PC is loading webpages slower and slower, now most just hang with the load icon still spinning. I noticed things slowing down in one day. Some pages freeze. Some partialy load. Google always loads fine but if I try to click on a search result, the page now hangs. There are a few pages W/O problems. I cant post a hijack log on that PC.
There the facts:
ISP: Verizon, DSL
PC:Compaq Presario SR202NX 120GB free
Windows XP, Avast, Spybot, ZoneAlarm

I tried:
Flushing DSL cache, booting in safe mode, ran Spybot & avast.

Could the network card or modem be going bad?

I don't restart my XP machine very often, but after about two weeks of increasingly irritating slowness / delayed responsiveness when opening new applications or tabbing between programs, I finally decided to reboot to see if that would help. Not a great idea apparently, as now the machine won't load at all.  The power supply fan kicks in when I turn it on, but dies down pretty quickly.  The initial Gateway load screen (with F2/F10 to access BIOS) appears, and then... nothing happens.   The screen stays there forever.  No error beep codes, no response if I use the function keys to try to load the bios menu, and no safemode if I hit or hold F8 when I turn it on.  Occasionally, it will give me the normal "yeah, enough already" beeps on keypress if I continue to hit f8 as it starts up, but even that's not consistent.I'm having some trouble checking the forums for solutions, since the core problem is the absolute lack of anything happening.   Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I start tinkering with stuff above my paygrade.

Answer:Hang on Gateway screen: won't load BIOS, won't boot in safemode

Is the hard drive activity light on when it becomes unresponsive? Did you try resetting the BIOS settings?

Does anyone have any advice for the following? I was running a scientific program (Matlab) that caused my computer to hang and required cutting the power. When I restarted I started getting all these problems.

Office 2007 no longer starts (Word was running when my computer hung). When I try to start Word, it starts the Microsoft Installer process. Then the Installer fails and says: "Error 1719: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." I confirmed that the Windows Installer service is started under services.msc. Unregistering and reregistering the installer with msiexec.exe /unregister and msiexec.exe /register does not help.

Reinstalling Office 2007 from the original setup file gives the error: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." This was for setup.exe, but other .exe files work fine.

Going to Control Panel -> Program and Features and clicking on "Change" for Word gives: "An error has occurred while trying to uninstall Microsoft Office. It may have already been uninstalled." However, this error does not apply just Office, it applies to EVERY program on the computer.

Using Windows XP and this computer already had some malware on it that I removed by deleting things outright under the file search and "recently modified"...however, I tried to do some more deleting tonight and quickly lost the user account access screen (it changed to an old style looking one and only lets me login under the first account), my icons are now all looking highlighted, and I can't really load much of anything other than Internet Explorer...pretty sure I deleted a key dll file so if anybody knows what particular one launches programs, that would be a great help and I could go ahead and download it.

I would just reinstall XP but I don't have a disc on hand. I also can't run .exe so no RegEdit or TaskManager, etc.

The error message I get is:

"The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect." This happens with any sort of file (zip, video, etc.)

I have a windows 7 pc desktop computer with a 320gb hard drive, 8gb of ram, and a very fast processor. The operating system is the 7600 version, and it has been installed for a couple months. A few days ago my computer started to act weird. Some programs worked fine, but others like ie8 and Google Picassa would not load. The window for ie8 would open, but then it would freeze. Also, all of my antivirus programs are taking like 6-10 minutes to open, and then they often freeze or go very very slowly. I was also having problems with right clicking, so I disabled all the non Microsoft context menu items, and that fixed the right click problem, but now the control panel won't load. I did scan the computer for viruses with Norton and AVG, but it did not help. Thanks

Answer:Cannot load programs

Hi Vicki,

You'll need to give more information surrounding the issue for us to be able to help. A great start would be to ascertain which program is causing the error. This will more than likely be in the title bar (Blue Bar) at the top of the error message.

It should look like 'MyProgram.exe'.

Let us know and we'll take it from there.

I'm running Windows XP and just recently started to have the following issues:

- Majority of the time I have to launch a program two times before it will actually run

- In IE sometimes the toolbars do not show

What should be the first step to take to diagnose this?

Strange thing this morning. I have a Thinkpad T400 running XP Pro. Yesterday I booted Linux from a USB drive. I have done it a few times and never had a problem. Not sure if this problem is related. This morning the IE, Show Desktop and other icons that are usually just to the right of the lower left Start icon are missing. When I go into programs and try to start IE I get a blank screen that pops up for a second and then disappears. Other programs like Excel and Kindle won't load either. I suspect this is a spyware/malware issue. My computer won't load ANY programs, not even something as simple as Notepad. I get an hourglass and no response.

However, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express still work, and work just fine. They run quickly, like nothing is wrong. Everything else won't even load.

I can't post a Hijack This log, since I can't even get Hijack this to load! Is there a way to have it load and run on startup? I can run it in safe mode, but I don't think the problem shows up in safe mode.

Answer:Can't load any programs but IE and OE

When shutting down to try and run Hijack in safe mode, I got a message that windows could not shut down GCASDTSERV.EXE

I booted in safe mode, deleleted gcasdtserv.exe and now everything seems fine. Any idea what that program is? It appears that it was the Microsoft antispyware program, as it had that icon, and now I see that the Microsoft Antispyware isn't loaded. (Gee, a problem with a Microsoft beta program? I can't imagine that...)

Can anyone confirm that was the problem? Should I try and reinstall it?

Ok I know theres a virus, he's bought and paid for something called CA Antivirus which seems to be more trouble than its worth.

It started with, trying to download sound drivers for the conextant audio Compaq Pressario C700.

In trying this the wireless died, and doesnt appear, and there are no system restore points.

So at the moment I cannot retrieve any documents as the virus infects any flash drives, Cds refuse to write.

The CA immediately banned the mbytes.exe and wont open the Superantispyware and has trashed that flash drive. I cannot download the files whatever it is closes the download and the internet wont even open sometimes.

the threat still on the formatted dlash drive is INF/Autorun virus ,caught by Nod32

Any ideas or do I format the Hard Drive, mind you this HDD is only 4 weeks old as the last one fried itself. ( my last thread)

Answer:I cannot load any programs.

I would first install this if possible:
AutoEater. (Download to a clean thunb drive and install it.)

You can try these instructions to disable your AV program:

My computer won't let some programs load and others to do it's job. For instance, I have a couple of internet marketing programs that require validation over the internet before it boots up. One of the programs load fine, but it doesn't work when I actually run it. The other doesn't load up at all; I check task manager and it says that it is running but the interface is nowhere to be found. Also, I cannot update any of my software including my AVG and ZoneAlarm.

I have ran a error-check and defrag of my C: drive but that did nothing.

I ran Malwarebytes but that, too, can't update itself.

I ran Uniblue RegistryBooster and it scans fine. But once I try to clean registry it just shuts down!!

I went through my entire taskmanager and msconfig startup list and ran every process through and but can't seem to find any problems.

I tried shutting down my firewall to see if it's causing the problems since it seems to be internet-based software and updates that aren't working but that didn't work.

Not really sure where to go from here.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Ya'all!!! It's been a long time since I've had to post anything but this one has got me stumped.

I have tried to load several programs lately such as Label Factory, Front Page Disk 2 etc... and every time the disk starts to spin it gives me this error message

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Then I have to click close and that's it the programs will not load. I ran a virus scan and uncovered a Troj "Exploit Verify" I have taken care of that but still won't work at all.

I'm running Windows XP Pro

I was hoping to get some help. When I go to load a program I double click on in and the install wizard is activated and the screen telling you what the program is comes up for 2 seconds and then it goes away and the installation just turns it's self off. I have tried to install it in Windows Safe mode but the the same thing happens. I'm using windows XP the system is a Intel P4. If anyone could give me a hand it wold be greatly appreciated.

Answer:I Need Some Help! Programs Won't Load

Does this happen with all programs or just a specific one? Which program are you trying to install?

It is possible that the downloaded file is corrupt. Try downloading it again, save it to a disk or flash drive, and try installing it. Does the same problem occur?

This is a question that has plagued me for years working with Windows XP. When I load XP, then when everything is finished loading, I try to run a program (it can be any program), and it takes a short while for the program to actually start loading, or display. This only happens for the first program I try to run when I load up my PC (including task manager). Does anybody know what causes this? Or, are there any fixes for this? Thanks

Answer:Programs do not load

As a guess, it may be that your computer is talking a looonnngggg time to actually load (not everything is loaded when you see the desktop).

Try turning it on and going away for 10 minutes and then running a program.

Does it then load right up?

Hello everyone. I have a serious problem right now with my desktop computer. I am using a friend's laptop at the moment to post on this forun. Here's what happened:

A little while earlier my internet connection went out which is a frequent occurence. I opened a command prompt and typed in ipconfig and released and then tried to renew my connection. The renew command simply hung there and after a few minutes I exited the command prompt, thinking that eventually it would correct itself as it usually does. I tried to open Microsoft Word to get some work done and received the following error message:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate.

I did so and then tried it again. Same error message. I tried opening another program and received, yet again, the same message.

At that point I rebooted. When my computer came back on, I would say that 98% of the start-up programs failed to initialize. I received several of those messages. I tried to open Firefox to get online to come here and it would not lot load.

My computer will boot in safe mood with Networking and in safe-mode programs will load correctly, but l cannot access the internet.

I rebooted again and chkdsk ran itself automatically. It said something was "dirty" and it removed some things and then booted normally. No change at the desktop--programs still wont load.

I've rebooted several times. At the present moment, programs will load without the er... Read more

I believe a couple of other people have the same problem so hopefully someone here will have an answer.

My wife noticed a slowdown in the computer so she tried rebooting. Upon restart, IE7 starts to open but never connects with the internet. I also noticed that a few of my programs didn't load also (Norton Internet Security & Weatherbug). I also noticed that my processes show iexplorer.exe starting on its own and running in the backgroud. Ending the process was only temporary as it opened on its own again a little later.

Someone suggested that it could be a conflict between some new software from a newly installed external hard drive and these programs. Just to be safe, I uninstalled all four programs (Norton, Weatherbug and both new software programs). Nothing changed.

Using Symantec's website, I ran the antivirus program and a few adware cleaners. Nothing was found out of the ordinary.

Please help me with this issue. I'm out of ideas.

Your help please.

I seem to have two problems that may or may not be related.

1) My browser has been hijacked by ""

2) I cannot load any new program.

I have posted my hijack this log below. I'm running XP Media Center, SP1, w/ ad-aware, spybot, and eTrust EZ antivirus.

Prob 1) How do I keep your-search from returning? I've tried removing it with all of the above but it keeps returning.

Prob 2) Whenever I try to load a new program from CD it starts to load but only progresses so far then quits loading. The CD drive continues to spin for a couple of minutes then stops. My feeling is that this is related to trying to remove Symantec (Norton) AV. My guess is that there is something still in there that hangs the loads. But, as usual, I'm probably totally wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

When I turn on my system I get the following in an application error box. "wmdcbase.exe"
This application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b) Click ok to close the application"

I get the exact same message for WLTRAY.exe including the same hex address. Any ideas how to fix?

I did have AVG on the system. I disabled it and added Avast. I ran avast and it found 16 viruses which I removed (and I did turn off the system restore point). I then disabled Avast and ran combofix, and then rebooted. No joy.

Our users have IE 7 and 8. We keep them locked into place by pointing IE to our firewall product (tools > internet options > connections > lan settings), so that only approved sites are the ones that our people can access. In the last few days, several of them report issues with specific websites loading very slowly - load times of over an hour just to get the log-in screen to appear.Troubleshooting Steps:1.) Unchecked the "use proxy server for your LAN" under the IE menus---> Site resolves instantly, as it should---> This pointed me to the direction that perhaps the site wasn't configured for our firewall2.) Re-checked the "use proxy server" box, and specifically configured the site in our firewall---> Site continues to resolve slowly, with the same load times as before performing step 1That would normally indicate that the problem is on the vendor's end. Something may be wrong with their site. And that's the line of thought I was pursuing until I was reported back to that the users are having the same problem on other websites. These new websites they're having problems with are, and have been for a long time, configured properly in the firewall.I'm not sure what my next step is to pursue. What am I looking for now? I don't know enough about networking to figure out where to track next.

Answer:Users are unable to load websites - no error, just 1-hour+ load times for pages

Windows Xp Doesnt Wanna Load, I Gotta Restart To Make It To Load

OK, Im gonna explain what happened step by step cause Im not sure whats important. I dont understand very much about this stuff. I hope someone more expirienced then me will help me out.

Im using windows xp proffessional version.

OK It first happened while I was surfing online, I was surfing on sites that I can say are pretty much safe, but at the same time I was running either AVG 7.5 antivurus or their AVG antispyware 7.5 (not sure which one of the two) . At some point when the scanning was on my E hard drive ( windows is on my C hard drive ) the computer froze and naturally I restarted. But windows didnt wanna start after the restart, it kept giving these messeges: windows didnt shut down properly and it asked me to choose to start it in safe or normal or etc.. mode.

I tried every type of start mode, it didnt work. Windows wouldnt load and u know that line where windows loads would move a while and then responce no nothing. So I tried restaring several times. Same thing, widnows didnt start properly last time, choose a mode...after I choose it loaded for a while but then stopped!

So I took it to the repair, the re-installed my windows. Now when I wanna start it, it runs properly doesnt ask me to choose, windows ... Read more

Are you able to boot in safe mode? It seems like you might have a conflict with the program wanting to run at start up..
My first suggestion is to boot safe mode, then remove your AV.. See if that helps..
Also, do you have more than one anti-virus program installed?

I have a NB100 And when it trys to boot i get Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys

I have connected a DVD drive with the product recovery disc GMR400882EN0 inside it and powered on, on booting i keep F12 pressed and I get the options for setting it to boot from HD FDD CD/DVD USB Memory, I set it to boot from CD/DVD

When it loads it gets to loading RAM image I get Error 32768 File PEBASE ISO Could Not Load.

I am suspecting faulty recovery disc? and a new one is £29.99? But the laptop is under warranty but they told me to do this.

My daughter has a Asus 904HD and once she had a problem... She had none of the poor support of go and do it yourself... Asus sent a courier very fast-confirmed pick by text-fixed-delivered back confirmed drop off by text within 5 days!!

Answer:NB100 Recovery Disc wont load - Error 32768 File PEBASE could not load

>I am suspecting faulty recovery disc? and a new one is £29.99? But the laptop is under warranty but they told me to do this.

I doubt it?s a faulty recovery disk.
The error message: missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys could be caused by faulty HDD or another hardware component.
In your case I recommend contacting the Toshiba ASP for hardware check and new OS installation. The notebook is under warranty (as you suggested in the posting above) and therefore everything should be done for free because it?s covered by warranty

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed that my yahoo mail was not loading correctly.
Since then I have discovered that several websites will not load at all.

My wife's laptop with xp has no issues with the same sites.

Yahoo sites load partially displaying only text and text links.
While searching for remedies, I found yahoo answers that appeared like there might be useful information but could not get them to load either.

Two other example sites that do not load at all:

Firefox reports that they failed to load, Chrome reports that there was no data received.

I have Avast AV running, have tried clearing any and all rootkits. Tried Malware bytes, tried flushing the DNS cache. And as far as I can tell I am virus free yet nothing has helped.

I even tried looking up the IP address of using nslookup and could not get any of the returned IP addresses to load.

I thought it may be a DNS issue, but I appear to be using reliable DNS servers and

Any ideas as to what may be causing my system to refuse to download specific web sites?

Answer:Some sites will not load, some load partially, most are fine - browser independent

Will those sites open with IE?

Laptop is a Samsung R510 running Vista.
When it is switched on, it gets stuck on the Samsung BIOS load screen. The F2 (Setup) and F4 (Recovery) buttons don't work unless they are pressed straight away. But when they are pressed it says 'Please Wait', but nothing happens.

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal.
First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly.
After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects. someone please help

Answer:windows 7 refuses to load and system repair wont load

Do a hardware/software reset with your BIOS:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

After doing those steps, clear your CMOS by entering the BIOS (see your system manual for steps to enter the BIOS), going to the EXIT screen, and loading setup/optimized defaults.
