Question: Dunno How To Describe It

My computer's been acting like bleep ever since I bought it. It's always had popups from Drivecleaner and I can't find forums on removing what I've got. Can someone please read this HijackThis log and try to help me? I'd appreciate it greatly.(Moderator edit: log post moved to HJT log Forum for team analysis and member assistance. Preferred Solution: Dunno How To Describe It

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Dunno How To Describe It

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run from a temp directory. Download and run the HijackThis autoinstall program Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files as the destination.Run the program only from that location from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.Once you have Hijackthis running from this folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log as a reply in this thread.

I dunno what is up. But whenever i am on a video chat with windows live (as of now, never before) ever now and then i here a computer like ping or a crackle. It sorta switches sounds all the time, but it isn't the person on the other side of the chat. It happens random, and when i close the webchat it stops.

I had gotten a blue screen before this started happening, something about windows had to shutdown to protect some file. However i don't remember anything else about the blue screen. My friend has no idea whats wrong, he had the same problem and dell had to come out and fix it. I don't have it under warranty anymore and we really don't have dell anywhere near us.

It would mean a lot if you were able to help me. Sorry i can't capture the ping sound, but think of pong. Sometimes it is higher pitched, others it is low. But it is really really strange.

Answer:I dunno any other way to describe..

If this helps at all, i believe i have found the error from the blue screen of death in event view. Couple minutes after this event it is a list of programs starting.

Also what is the problem here, are you trying to install sound drivers to get your sound to work, however the drivers don't save?

Sorry i couldn't describe it in one word.

The problem is, i'm running a peer-to-peer network, 4 terminals and a main PC.

We are using a custom software for medical biling (which i created myself so im sure this is not a software issue 'coz i know my program very well)

I don't know which machine is causing this, but i keep on getting an error code in my software which means "incomplete data-transfer". I'm pretty sure this is a networking issue. I've tried to re-wire but no effect. Is it the server causing this or one of the terminals?

Please help me 'coz im so annoyed with my client calling me almost every two hours to recover the data.

I am using Firefox v1.0.7 on a Win XP Pro SP2 machine.

I installed Firefox last year and haven't had any problems with it until now. I was using it earlier today and all was well. I closed the browser and did some system maintenance and clean up. When I was done I went to open the browser and everything looked 'different'.

The first thing I noticed was all the bookmarks in my Bookmarks Toolbar were gone. The toolbar is still there but no bookmarks. Also, the small green 'Check for Updates' arrow is right next to 'Help' on the menu bar. On my system it used to be right next to the throbber.

The address bar and the Google search bar are still there but if I click in the text boxes I can't get a cursor nor can I type anything in there. I can't get any of the menus to drop down when I click the menu bar either. My tabbed browsing bar is missing completely.

BUT, if I double-click the 'Check for Updates' icon, Firefox will check for updates and tell me:

Firefox did not find any updates

Firefox encountered problems when trying to find updates for some items. |Details|

When I click the details button it says that it couldn't check for updates for the Bandwidth Tester. Also, if I right-click on the Bookmarks Toolbar and go to Manage Folder. The bookmark manager comes up and I can see my Bookmarks Toolbar Folder only. There is no tree to see any other bookmarks.

I have tried to uninstall - restart PC - re-install but the problems persist.

Answer:I'm not sure how to describe this.

It seems as if something got deleted if this fault is the result of a clean-up. If you have reinstalled FF, the problem shouldn't be anything to do with the main application folder in C:\Program Files. This only leaves the Profiles folder (this isn't affected by uninstallation/reinstallation). I don't know what single file being possibly deleted could cause all of the symptoms described. Maybe there's more than one problem.

You could just try starting up in Firefox's Safe Mode (shortcut in the Start Menu) to see if that makes a difference. If it does, it's likely to be a theme or an extension causing the problem. If it doesn't, perhaps your best course would be to create a new Profile and re-build it to requirements.

Do a Windows search for 'Bookmarks.html' (or look in the Profiles directory for it) and take a copy of the file. When the new Profile is created, you can use this copy to overwrite the Bookmarks.html file located in the new Profile's folder. If Bookmarks.html cannot be found, they may have become lost.

If you are not used to working with the Profiles folder, the links below should help:

Hi folks,

I would like to recommend this in the Feedback App, but I'm not sure how to say it. For lack of words, I have put this together so y'all can see what I would like. I guess I would just like more customization with the Start Menu.

Below is the log from my HijackThis Scan from my compromised computer. I cannot access the internet; I cannot install any software. The system will randomly reboot. Other scans do not seem to indicate there is an issue, but there is.

When I tried to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, I get the the following message 5 times during installation:

CoCreate Instance Failed; code 0x80040154 Class not registered.

The program acts like it is finishing the install, then I get the following messages:

vbAccelerator SGrid II Control
Run-time error '0'

Then I get:
Run-time error '372"
Program will not run.
When I click on the icon in the lower right corner for network/internet connection, I get "not connected". And then, "No Connectivity Available". I clicked on "troubleshooting. I got a message "Problem Found". The Diagnostic Policy Service is not running.
I clicked below that on "Open Network and
Sharing Center" - Nothing happens.
When I try to open my Outlook [2007 Ultimate] Windows Installer starts. Then, the following message:
Error 1719: The Windows Installer Service could not accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
When I close that window, another window pops up:

Alright so, i'm going to make this short as I possibly can because i'm going to bust a cap soon.

So let me describe the symptoms of this annoyance:

-Skype won't do anymore than open the log in screen and act like its going to log in but never does. I've downgraded to an older version of skype but it has not fixed the log in issue. I was logged in and skype was working fine until i tried to receive a video call and skype closed on me. Now it won't log in at all.
-MSN Messager won't let me receive/make video calls. Whenever I accept a call, MSN commences into the annoying "not responding" mode and I have to close out of it and restart it, and if I try to video call someone, my video pops up and it says its connecting, but when their video loads i hear their audio and then MSN goes "not responding" and freezes so I have to close it and restart.
-iTunes will not open, its process is in task manager, but it never opens
-Not sure what else won't open and I dont feel like going through all my applications trying to open everything, but these are the ones I use the most, and since they're malfunctioning its getting really annoying.
-I have tried unplugging my logitech webcam and tried video calling on MSN with my laptop webcam and it hasn't worked
-I have tried rolling back my drivers for my webcam and audio and it hasn't worked.
-I had this problem about two weeks previous, except instead of iTunes not opening, youtube audio wasnt playing, and the p... Read more

Answer:I'm not even sure how to describe this

Wow that's a lot of problems. Generally with that many issues id say fresh install the operating system and start again.

But, if a lot of things are failing to open, I'd probably starting with disabling the paging file and trying these program's, as it seems to be a system wide fault.

I looked around the forums before posting this but I couldn't find one that really related to this.  Recently my power supply stopped working so I just bought a new one to replace it.  After installing the new PSU, I was getting repeating beeps from my bios.  I took it into the tech guy in my workplace and he fixed that problem for me.  I took it home and tried to hook it up to a monitor but nothing is being sent to the monitor.  I've tested the new PSU to make sure it's working, replaced the RAM and the motherboard but nothing seems to help.  I've tested it on a few monitors that are confirmed to be working, using both the onboard and video card outputs but still nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there is any more information anybody needs tell me.

Answer:I'm not sure how to describe this.

If your power supply is good & ram,V card is also good it has to be the cpu or the board.

Please forgive this total non-geek's non-technical descriptions.I have two problems which no one seems to be able to help me with.Brief background*: I had some sort of virus; don't know what it was. I'm pretty sure it's gone now. Norton and Spybot can't find anything. Norton is current and updated, and I do full system scans every day. I run Spybot at least 2x/week. I use Windows Firewall. Pop-ups are blocked. Also, after all my problems started, I found in a Spybot forum thread a link to a website where you can compare different AVs (some of the top ones) by their giving you a free, no-strings-attached scan. I took full advantage of these scans. None found any viruses. Only one found a (supposed) low- or mid-threat malware, in a folder -- with no file specified. Since this was a free scan, it didn't fix the problem (if there really is one).I have run checkdisk, which fixed some errors, and I have defragged. My following two problems remain, and I am 99.9% certain that it's not a hardware problem since the both problems started together.(1) Any sound that this laptop can possibly make (except keyboard sounds) are static-y sounding.(2) There is a problem with the display - and here is where I have a difficult time explaining. The only way is to give an example. Here goes: Let's say that six months ago, I went to website "xyz".com and found on the website a photo of "John Smith," and copied "John Smith"&... Read more

Hi guys,

As the thread title says, I dont know how to describe this problem but I'll give it a shot, don't even know if I'm in the right place!

My laptop is having this problem that whenever I try to open/close a program, the program simply just highlights (recognising I have attempted to open or close it) but does nothing after that. If the program I am trying to open is on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, I can do nothing on the taskbar then as the blue loading circle is there making it unable for me to click on anything. I can still access the desktop and attempt to open programs, but the same thing will happen making the whole thing unable to work on. I can't get into anything and I am stuck on my desktop.

I have a Compaq laptop and I know the Operating System is the issue as I was able to access some sort of HP Operating System and the laptop worked perfectly fine on that, although I have no idea how or why that decided to open on startup instead of Windows.

I am aware my report of the issue is confusing and poor, so if you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them.

Answer:I don't even know how to describe this problem!

This a print screen of a Messenger Chat Window, and is supposed to be the emoticons list. I firstly thought there's a problem with my flash player, but i checked everything and my version is up to date and everything else works perfectly. While i'm on my browser, i do not face any kind of problem. Only when i open the installed apps. Mostly of them happen to have this issue.

Here is a print screen of my Norton Security which, on my last computer, i remember it had a lot more icons, symbols and buttons on the screen. After i got my new laptop ( Sony VAIO ), it worked perfectly for about 1 month then i don't know what happened and i woke up with this problem only on Messenger than it spread.

And yesterday, I wanted to play sims 3 after a long while, after 3-4 months or so. Then, it had absolutely no problem. Now, it started to freak me out because I can't work properly on my computer due to the fact that I can't see where I click or what I click on.

I'm seriously looking forward for a workable solution, or at least a piece of advice that could lead to one.
Thank you.

Answer:I don't know how to describe my problem, but i seriously need help.

Hello Andrea and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm just taking a really wild guess here but do you now or have you ever had Java installed? Java is the programming language that lets you use chat forums, play online games, view images in 3D, etc.

Just for the heck of it, run JavaRa (an uninstaller tool) to make sure all traces of any previous versions of Java are removed from your computer. Then try installing the latest version of Java. Any change to your situation?

Okay, for possibly the last 2-3 weeks I've been having an issue where my computer will constantly be refreshing and opening up windows for no reason. I'm not sure what to do, when I open my browser (Chrome) I try to search for some possible fixes, but the first key press I enter into the search bar will automatically take me to a site I have visited before, for example if I hit "y" it opens up youtube instantly. Thinking maybe it's a Chrome issue I try opening the settings however clicking the settings button opens up another tab instead. If I try opening a alternate program like notepad I've found that the program scrolls down constantly, and won't allow you to close it. It simply skips asking whether or not you want to save before closing and opens up my files for me to pic an area to save to. Clicking close simply goes back to notepad auto scrolling down.

I've found that it doesn't always happen, but when it does I can check by clicking on the small arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen that holds my program list. By clicking on the arrow the small box does appear however it flashes constantly in and out until I left click away on something else a few times. Answer:Not sure how to describe the issue I've been having.

Weird !

The first thing that comes to mind is a hardware problem. You say this started with a new keyboard, so - beg, borrow or steal a keyboard of a different make, plug it in and see if the problem goes away. If it does, take your keyboard back and ask for a replacement ( or your money back ! ). Worst comes to the worst, you are out the price of a keyboard, but they are fairly cheap.

If that doesn't work, then I would be inclined to start the computer in safe mode with networking ( tap the F8 key several times while the boot screen is showing, and it should go to the boot option menu, if you haven't done this before ) and run your scans in safe mode. It would also be interesting to see if the problem continues when you are in safe mode. I have once had an application go out of control like you describe, but it was only one application, and shutting down and a cold boot sorted it.

One thing, you don't say what type of keyboard your new one is, and what sort of connection it uses.

Good luck,

Chris Cosgrove

I have a new Sony Vaio (five weeks old) VGN CS11S

Hope I can describe this problem, so that that you will understand what I mean.

Below my taskbar, there is a line running the length of my screen. It flashes every second and is driving me nuts.
It alomst looks like it is the top of a page, as I can just manage to see (what I think is the cross box that would usually be at the top of the page. However, when I try to catch it with my arrow, it would appear that the arrow is sliding down behind it.
I know, it sounds weird. Anyway, I have done three re-starts, but it hasn't helped.
I have tried contacting Sony, but get no replies. Other than these, I have no clue as to what it is or what I can do with it.
Do you think it sounds like a faulty screen?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Allright guys/girls, heres my problem.....I purchased a dell dimension 8200 about 6-7 years agoIts been through everything, I use to take my aggresion out on it, but it never affected its performance. I kept it pretty clean using avg virus protection, ad aware, and spybot search and destroy. So internet garbage was never a problem. About a year ago, everytime I would start up my computer I would recieve two messages(These might not be word for word)1. Your system cooling fan is not functioning properly2. Your system battery is low.I never went out and bought a new cooling fan instead I just placed a stand up fan behind my whole computer and it kept my computer running fine. Eventually my computer wouldn't turn on at all. I went to radioshack and purchased a new system battery and I got my computer to turn on again. The weird thing was the power button light on the front of my computer would have to "charge" almost. It would flash yellow, starting from a weak amount of light to a strong amount. None-the-less once the yellow light peaked my computer would turn on. About a week after I got the system battery though my computer quit turning on again. It still goes through the yellow light process and rarely it attempts to turn on but then immediatly shuts back off and starts the yellow light process all over again. If anyone knows what the problem is please help me or if you need some more information let me know and i'll do my best to describe it.THANK YOU!

Answer:Please Help Me (I don't know how to describe this problem)

Well understandably, because of it's age this computer is dying. I'd say the motherboard and or CPU have kicked the bucket. If you can't even get POSTing or see the BIOS there isn't really much you can do, aside from:Cleaning and buying a new computer.

This morning, while attempting to move some files around my Windows 7 64bit laptop began telling me that I didn't have permission to do so, as I needed permission from the "TrustedInstaller". I googled this issue and resolved it by configuring permissions.

Feeling a little suspicious I decided to run Malwarebytes. As I attempted to install it, when asked what language I wanted - the program defaults to "Bosanski". Being that I work in IT and have cleaned hundreds of machines I installed it anyway and was able to blindly walk my way through it and run a scan. It came back clean.

I then went to "Region and Language" in the Control Panel and once I got in there, all the values started scrolling around madly until it settled on "Afrikaans (South Africa).

I then went to download Speccy, as to give you a screenshot of my system specs and the installer did the same thing. It chose the "Portuguese" language. I then tried to download some other programs and they all did the same thing.

Another bug that is happening is that when I attempt to move any files, Windows will not allow me to scroll down...it locks onto "My Documents" and then if I scroll down and choose a different directory...it immediately scrolls back up to My Documents.

I'm at my wits end with this, as googling as brought me nothing. One thread came close to what I was describing but it had no resolution. And most of the things from his log appear identi... Read more

Answer:Nearly Impossible To Describe, But I'll Try

Trustedinstaller *belongs* to the operating system and should not be moved or modified in any way. Also, keep in mind, just because you scanned with MBAM and came up clean, doesn't mean that your system, is in fact, clean. It sure sounds like malware, or some kind of virus, to me. If you have an installed AV, run a full system scan. Perhaps you could try restoring to a point before you had issues. I don't believe Trustedinstaller would have anything to do with the language issues that you are experiencing.

Has any one heard of a internet software utility that would work something like an email account, where you could upload large files to it, and then download them to a different computer.

I thought this was a possibility with gmail, but it has a 15mb limit.

First things first, I'm not sure what kind of problem this is so I posted it in this forum, hopefully this is fine.

It simply skips asking whether or not you want to save before closing and opens up my files for me to pick an area to save to.

If it is important to know it is also nearly impossible to do anything from the start button. It will also flash repeatedly, and I think if I hover the cursor over any of the pro... Read more

I think I would tend to suspect an infection and you could let the Security guys in the Virus & Trojan section check your system for you as no AV is 100% effective.

Read through these pre-posting requirements NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help before opening a new thread in that section and let them know if you're having problems with any of the steps.

i just followed a thread titled "buffs", click here 'cos I thought it might be a new virus or summat.the very helpfull people on this site give up their time and efforts freely to help others - 'cos its just what they do (thnx all)..posters, please, put something related to the problem in the title box, that way you will most likely get a response from someone with knowledge of the problem at hand, and save the time of those that don't.usually a proper description elicits a more creditable response, without having a round of "what'ya mean", "what'ya got", "eh?", "sorry, not my field" dialogs.(sorry if this sounds harsh)

Answer:this is where we should all describe the problem

I agree it will help, especially with the search facility. But apart from the more knowledgeable people that are asking a specific question, and are able to describe the problem in detail. The vast majority of people are looking for an answer to a problem that they cannot always describe in a couple of words. That's why they need help, and most of us don't mind trying to decipher the question before we can provide an answer.I don't mind at all in spending a little of my time looking for answers, then attempting to describe them in a more basic, user friendly way. If this helps someone and provides a fix, then I'm happy. Regards. j.

This is a problem that occurs at random, sometimes just after I boot up sometimes after the PC has been on a few hours. Sometimes when I'm offline but more often when I'm online.Monitor goes black, still powered up but no signal. Fans still running, but no modem activity if I'm online and if I'm listening to music (MP3), no sound. Sometimes I can reboot using ctrl/alt/delete but more often I have to press the reset button, the machine allways boots without a problem.I've tried memory tests, reinstalling graphics drivers, reseating cards and cables, virus/trojan scansAnyone got any ideas?

Hey,
I bought a new computer a few months back with Windows 7 x64 loaded on. I took a hard drive from the old computer and added it to the new Hewlett-Packard HPE 500. This hard drive contained all my music files. I noticed right away that the file icons were faded (?) compared to the icons of the files that I started downloading with the new computer. When I put my 'pointer' over an original file, I'm being told that the file is empty. But it's not. I can double click and open the file, highlight the songs within and play them on the computer. Now my problem comes up when I try to sync a playlist partially made up of some of those older original files. Windows Media Player comes up with a list of synced songs that appear as 'Errors'. And all those errors are the songs from the old original files.
I guess my question is this - how do I get Windows 7 to recognize the original files from my hard drive?

Roxio Creator & My DVD 9.0 DE
Sound Blaster AudioPCI128
International Installation CD
Cyberlink Power DVD
Legend QDI Driver CD 2000
Sapphire Installation Driver Graphics CD

Thank you!

Answer:How do I describe the software Cds I have pls?

These are garbage:

Sound Blaster AudioPCI128
International Installation CD
Legend QDI Driver CD 2000
Sapphire Installation Driver Graphics CD

They are old driver discs that are of no use to anyone.

These you may not legally be able to sell because they are intended for use on the computers they were sold with and are likely old versions that may not work with new computers:

I'm not sure how to describe this. Just 'checkered tile'-like appearing. I'm in Windows 7 7100RC, was playing game [Savage2, fullscreen] and it just SUDDENLY happened. All of a sudden. I've tried system restore and it didn't work. I would give my system information [graphics card etc] but I can't because I can't read/see it due to this problem.

So anyways....please refer to the images and see if you know anything about it..
Thanks.

the pics show the checkered tile thing which covers part of the screen, it changes location randomly when i click around or drag around. Ingame, it covers the whole screen. it affects the taskbar too [probably because of transparency]
one of the pics show how text disappear when i hover mouse over it, and in some places makes text unreadable, or doesnt exist at all. somehow doesnt affect the internet.
Thanks, any help is appreciated.

I have AVG Free Edition for virus control, and I run a AT&T browser (if that matters?). I ran a scan today and it found a trojan horse, which it said was deleted. What I thought was funny was that it stored itself in a program I haven't used in close to a year (alcohol 120%), but I guess they inbed anywhere they want? Anyway, I thought, after AVG said it was gone, that I would uninstall alcohol (as I said, I don't use it) and be done with it. Wrong. it's still there. here's the info AVG gave me:

Virus Name - Trojan Horse PSW.OnlineGames.FIY

Path - C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\blz-a120_1953823f-patch.exe

Date of Detection - 8/29/2007

File name - blz-a120_1953823f-patch.exe

File Size - 17KB

==============================

Ok, so maybe I lied. I scanned the Alcohol Soft folder in my Program Files, and nothing was detected. Yet, it says some file is in use and it won't delete the program. Alcohol also isn't showing up my Add/Remove Programs List. The file that is in use is in the folder:

C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\StarWind\Logs

That's all the info I have. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. ~ I saw a thread where someone gave custom support for a similar problem (what I thought was similar). If I have to install virus programs, are those easily uninstalled? Will I have to do anything special to not lose things such as work (writings, schoolwork) and music?

So basically, whenever I start a game or even a Youtube clip, or just any high demanding application (even a 100KB+ picture) my computer seems to lag loading it up. This only occurs momentarily, perhaps 1-2 seconds within opening the application.

Now, when I mean lag, think of it this way: When I play music and this happens, the music lags and kind of "slows down". Also, when I move my mouse, it lags too, looks almost choppy

I hope that was enough for a description, now how do I fix it?

Also, I'm not sure if it's related or not (probably is), after a number of these lags/hangs my computer may end up freezing entirely in which I have to force reset.

Video card brand/model: EVGA Geforce 6800
Amount of system memory: 1 gig

My problem is this: Sometimes a game I play, Guild Wars, will appear to "freeze", but, in fact, it is just not updating the picture. It has never happened to me with any other games, but it just seems to weird to be a Guild Wars problem, and noone else seems to have it. Alt-tabbing, ctrl+alt+del, everything, leaves me with the picture it was at. I know it's not frozen because I still hear sounds and I can still move. What I mean by saying I can move is this: If I click my mouse somewhere on my "frozen" picture, my character will move. How do I know when my image is "frozen"? I see it on my brother's screen, next to me. It responds and all, perfectly all right. I can hear sounds from battle, cinematics, and everything. But the picture does not change. I can even hear cinematics when frozen. I froze right next to where a cinematic would start, while a battle was going on. I HEARD the battle finish, then my brother talked to the person that starts the cinematic, and I HEARD the cinematic. The picture, however, did not change.

Oh yeah, nothing is overclocked.

Well, I think I found the problem... I downloaded RivaTuner and ran the Hardware monitor log. Next time the problem happened, after I rebooted, I checked the log. Right when it happened, the "Core VID" stopped showing anything. I looked on the internet and the "Core VID" is something with voltage... Now the solution, I know not. Do I need a new power supply? I AM running slightly below the minimum for the card right now, but my computer is hardly an energy hog, so I had assumed it would be alright. It has been for 3 months, until now.

Your error code 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed. We take it you built this system? If so, go to Asus' website and find their webpage for your exact model. Then update the latest offerings that they have for both your integrated video and sound.

* You may want to also consider updating your chipset drivers as well.

Greetings friends and neighbors!I recently bought a laptop. It is running Win XP Home. I got it cheap because the previous owner could no longer sign on to any account. Well I thought I would sign on in safe mode on the admin account and disable the passwords for the other accounts and have a nice laptop. That's not how it has worked out.No matter which account (safe mode or not) is accessed the same thing happens. It prompts "Loading your setting" then scarcely a second later it prompts "Logging off Saving your settings" and goes right back to the log in screen. It is almost like the date for windows activation has gone by with out the prompts that it uses in such a situation.I have not seen this before. If I can get into this machine, and recover of some picture files for the previous owner she would be happy. So would I for that matter as I have no keys for another operating system to put on it and frankly this machine is not worth the purchase of any.So what do you all think? It seems to boot fine so I'm not sure what my best option is here. If it a Malware I'm not sure how to combat it even with out being signed on...

Hey everyone,

I am new to this forum but I seem to have a big problem. Recently, my Windows Explorer has been acting up. To put simply, I really don't know how to describe it. I just can't do anything with it. I apologize for how large the images are.

When my computer first boots up if I am very quick I can access it.

As you can see in image one:

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/8733/41718682.jpg

This is what I can get when my computer first boots, provided I am fast enough.

HOWEVER

After a few minutes and I try to access "My Computer" THIS happens

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4732/mycomputer.jpg

Notice how it is all white, and nothing is in the address bar. Notice still, that it doesn't say "My Computer" like it should instead it says "Windows Explorer." Even my search won't work and when I try to access on of my folders from ">Start>All Programs" I can' acces any files within.

When I try to acces something else, like "My Music"

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/880/musicuat.jpg

I get the same results.

I have found a TEMPRORARY solution, when I system restore to an earlier point in time, the problem stops. HOWEVER, after an hour or two the problem comes up again.

I need an answer ASAP, this is seriously affecting my school work. Thank you.

Answer:I don't know how to describe it, but Windows Explorer isn't responding

Just a quick note:

I have also noticed that my HP Laptop becomes very slow when this happens.

Firstly I'd like to say that I'm glad to be joining the site, you guys seem to be doing great job here!

Like I said, it's tricky to explain this properly, but I'll try anyway. Windows won't let me interact with different windows properly. Once a window is minimized it's next to impossible to access it again without using taskmanager - switch to. If I click on the window from the taskbar (if it had been minimized of I was viewing another window) it come up fullscreen as usual, but then I can't click on anything on the window, it's as if I'm clicking "behind" the window, no matter what I try.
Maybe a clearer way of describing it is that the only way I can change the active window is with task manager, items in the task bar can be switched in and out of view but not activated.
Also occasionally icons on the desktop are unresponsive. And I also forgot to say that sometimes the task bar is sometimes completely unresponsive.

Anyone have any ideas? If you have any questions it might help for me to describe it, as I don't really know what you're looking for in terms of figuring out the problem. I'd love to get this sorted as it's incredibly frustrating!

Is this possible? And if so, how? Does it require php? Java? (I really don;t have a clue on things like this so please don;t laugh at my lack of knowledge!)Any help would be great, and sorry for not describing it too well, please let me know if you don't understand what I mean fully.CheersGavin

3 problems Don't know if they are related or not.

1) Internet Explorer (6) (Dumped 7 after problems) usually loading pages very very slowly at times taking 30 seconds or more between clicking and seeing any action at all. This also applies to Firefox and AOL. For the record, the other computer in the house runs just fine and at great speeds. Oh yeah, I can download a file quite fast, no problem. My main issue seems to be with navigating between pages and sites. I said usually, because sometimes it zooms along. Using Process Explorer I have tried to find a program in action during these slow downs, but I haven't had any luck nailing anything down.

2) My computer will not restart on its own unless I'm in Safe Mode. In standard shutdown I get a screen that says Windows is shutting down and it hangs there. I have left it for hours AND even overnight.......this always results in me pushing and holding the power button to reboot.

3) I cannot load a critical Windows Update (Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2) It has failed to update dozens of times.

If anyone has the talent to comprehend and repair all of this then you're really something special.

Thanks! Eric

Dual booting win98SE and WinXP Pro. Have been using Windows Media Player 9 without a problem. 4 days ago and from nowhere, I started having streaming music that was scrambled, timing of voice out of sync with the music and sometimes I cannot open the link to some streaming sites.
Did a "roll back" to WMP 7.01.00.3055 (through the Control Panel) which was my faithful player until I went to WMP 9. Had the same problems. Went back to WMP 6.4 and had same thing. It would appear that "something" has happened to some hardware, I guess. My audio is on-board and I haven't seen any thing amiss in My Computer. All of the usual malware/spyware have been run and virus scan shows nothing and the definitions are up-to-date. Think(thought) I had/have the necessary codecs installed. Maybe something happened to them!!
Now, for those 2-3 streaming stations that I can access, none of these problems are evident. Guess I should just be happy and stay with the "good" stations, huh. Any ideas anyone, and as usual, TIA.

EDIT: WinXP Pro is using WMP 9 without any problems!!!!

EDIT JR.:Have sometimes gotten the blue screen and this message: Fatal exception at 0028:FF0D08 FB. The current application will be terminated.

Answer:Solved: Difficult problem to describe

I removed WMP 6, WMP 7 and WMP 9; at separate times of course. Then reinstalled each of them but had no success cause I still had the problem. Have just reinstalled WMP 9 and for some unknown reason, I now can listen to my old stations on both OSs just as though nothing ever happened. Guess that is windows' tricks on me!! Weird

I have a fairly new Vista 32 laptop and recently I've been having problems during booting - BSOD w/ "IRQL not less or equal" and "Memory Management" errors, (among others that I couldn't read cuz the BSOD screen dissappeared too fast). I can sucessfully boot up after about two-three attempts, but I get the BSOD, or sometimes it gets a BSOD, and shuts down on its own, and when it automatically reboots, I get the black screen w "windows did not shut down properly...select either safe mode or... (etc)."
A couple days ago I tried to boot in safe mode and it still crashed w/BSOD.
My C:\ drive had only 900MB free space left so I deleted a couple large programs and that seemed to help, but it is still acting weird.
It's working fine at the moment, but I'm certain it will crash at any moment!
The most recent software/progs Iinstalled are ATT Communication Manager for wireless broadband, which I installed the day before it started acting weird - ATT might be the culprit, but I need it to get on the internet.

Many Thanks In Advance!

Hello guys,
I will try to be as short as possible:
I have Windows XP SP2

I start one of my pcs few days ago and it freezes at welcome screen.
I boot in safe mode. Login screen shows up. Two accounts available:

1. 7
2. Administrator

I press on administrator and type the password.. ( Did you forget your password.. appears ) I am 100% sure its correct.

Then I press on 7.. ( Did you forget your password.. appears )
NOTE: this account does not have a password, it never had!
There is no box to type a password.. but still the balloon ( Did you forget your password.. appears )

Then I decided to see if the admin password was changed by malware(?)
I used ophcrack-livecd and revealed it. No changes.. same password. Still I cannot login!

Then I decided to do a repair of Windows. I did the whole repair thing.. and it froze on blue screen... right after it was expected to login into windows ( after it ask if you want to register, so I think it finished successfully )

I restarted the PC.. And right after the welcome screen it shows blue screen:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}

The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x0000000)
The system has been shutdown.

Another restart shows:

Same with safe mode..

Answer:Video Card problem, Unsure of how to describe, HELP!!

I read through the thread at the link you posted. Updating the driver might help, but it looks more like the card fried to me.

here's my steps for updating video drivers:Uninstall the video driver
Boot into Safe Mode
Run DriverSweeper
Reboot back into regular Windows
Install the new video drivers
Reboot

Uninstall the current drivers through Add/Remove Programs (Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program). It will be called Nvidia Drivers or something similar.

DriverSweeper can be downloaded here.

Question: i dunno

This seems pretty easy but, this is what it does during installation.Should the spaces be removed along with the semi-colon or is this a normal config.Just seems a little odd to me..
C:\Perl\bin\perl.exe;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\;C:\Python25;C:\progra~1\common~1\gtk\2.0\bin; ;C:\RUBY\BIN

Answer:i dunno

What you have is a Windows rendition of $PATH which delineates the various directories that are searched to find a command to be executed.

Spaces are ok for file names and directory names on Windows systems. So, I would say leave them as is.

To demonstrate, you can put an executable with a unique name, e.g. hello, in any one of the directories - i.e. separated by the ';' character in $PATH, then position your command window to your $HOME directory, and give the command:
$ hello
where hello is the executable name of the hello world program that just prints out the words: Hello, world!

I would then move the hello executable back to your home directory.

Unless your installation triggered an error message regarding $PATH - it is nothing to worry about.

Question: wat? i dunno

Im really bad at this kind of stuff so hopefully someone can help.
All i know so far is that when i try to boot windows, it goes to the safe mode / last known good config screen. tried to load the last known good config and it didnt help. i was told that after a windows update was installed and computer was rebooted, it just wouldnt load windows. sorry for the lack of info, but i got nothin... im tempted to just reinstall windows.

anyone?

Answer:wat? i dunno

Hi Steve

Guessing it wont go into Safe Mode either and recycles back to same screen?

Could try a repair of windows and boot to OS CD.

Or as you say just bite bullet and go for clean install, but does the HD have data thats needed to be recovered first? if so I did a weird trick a while back, just one of those weird moments when a spark of genius jumps out and as I have Acronis True Image 2009 installed, and a rescuse CD created it booted to that and managed to be able to just Image the My Documents folders and other folders to portable HD, then formatted PC and installed Windows XP again, installed the 15day trial of Acronis 2009 (available from Majorgeeks) on that PC, plugged in the portable HD and managed to drill down into the Image and right click copy and pasted the folders to the desktop and then left the user to move them into the correct folders.

Question: I dunno here...

I have been getting weird spyware from my Ad-Aware scans, like tracking cookies when I use Firefox, and it actually found a file. I just did a scan with McAfee, and after it finished it found a trojan and I deleted it. Here is the logfile, but I don't know if there is anything bad on it. I hope not. Thanks in advance.

Well I ordered some RAM off ebay. PC3200 512 X 2. One stick is fine, but with the other one I get this. This is the second one the guy sent me and I think he sent the exact same one back thinking I wouldn't notice. I tried a different slot on the board too - same thing. I tried having only one stick in there and it was fine, but when I swapped sticks into the same slot - boom. Grrr...

Answer:Gee, I dunno... bad RAM?

Well well well.. should be easy enough to figure out where this problem started............

Dell Dimension C521 with XP Home loaded. Some time ago I installed a Linksys 2.4 GHz Wireless G PCI adapter with speed booster onto the motherboard, set it up properly and it worked fine.
Now I wish to connect a wired modem (Clearwire) for internet access, but XP is not recognizing the modem at all, only the wireless adapter
I have checked the ethernet connection on the computer, it's OK
No matter how many times I run the XP connection wizard, the modem is just not found
Did I somehow erase the program or driver that would recognize any modem ?
How do I get it back?
Thanks in advance !

Answer:dunno what I did, please help!

You should go to the homepage for the modem, and download the latest drivers. It sounds like you do not have the drivers installed.

Question: dunno what to do

I'm at a crossroads here. On one hand I really want to have my computer built VERY soon as I only have 2 more parts to order, and on the other han dI really want WIn Vista since it will be the next step in innovation and be 64 bit, and be required by most games coming out in Jan and after (I think)

problem is that Vista doesn't some out till end of Jan, and I want this comp done by end of Dec. I was thinking about getting Win XP media center to maybe hold me over but I don't know. In a month I would just be shelling out another $200 for Vista so I would have wasted so much money. What should I do!!

Answer:dunno what to do

just get xp and use it, and don't get vista for a couple of years. i have yet to hear of any games that say they will be vista only. the only thing vista has over xp gaming wise id dx10, and the 1st vid card t support it just came out and is over 600usd. so unless you have the nvidia 8800, you won't even be seeing dx10 in use, even if you get a game that uses it (i don't believe any are out yet). after using vista rc1 for a while, i just went back to xp. for me vista didn't give enouph tweeking power over my system to get the most speed for my gaming. the os just simply doesn't allow for 100% user control over the os like xp is. vista is just too concerned about protecting you and its self.

Hi chaps having a nightmare with pc at moment and looking for some ideas please.

To cut a long story short I was playin EQ2 and my pc went kaputt.

At first it would not boot up and kept changing the cpu size from 1500 to 2800.

Then I unplugged and replugged everything and 9/10 it would not boot up at all as in nothing would come up on monitor.

Eventually i had to call an engineer out who charged 20 quid for first hour 45 for 2nd fortunately he wasnt there for more than an hour.

He tested everything and was dumb founded. Sometimes it would boot up then freeze most of the time it would just reboot and then sometimes not even boot at all(using my pc as we speak).

He ultimately thought it was my memory so i slipped him 20 quid and went and bought some new memory. Stupidly guy behind the counter has given me pc 3200 ddr400 i swapped the memory round and it kept booting but restarting as i click on icon to log in(I meant to get pc 2700 ddr333).

My chip is amd athlon 2800
Win Xp Pro
400 W
ATI radeon 9800 xt pro
80 gb hd
On board ac97 sound cmedia

I have been reading on net that it might be my psu but i thought 400w should be enuf. I guess i could buy a larger model 550w maybe.

Or maybe its my mother board as sometimes it lets me boot up like it is now but it will probably reboot half way thru this message.

Also another note on booting up sometimes it read my memory as only having 140mb in or some other insane figure and freezes when it has a stick of 512mb in.

Answer:Pc Reboot/Or not at all dunno what to do plz elp:(

Check your fans. That 52 is kinda warm for the MB.(could be the sensors are crossed and the 52 is really the CPU) Make sure the fan is running in the power supply. That fan is the exhaust fan for the case. If it's not running, the power supply could be overheating and causing problems. A good cleaning with compressed air wouldn't hurt anything.

I'm not too much of a php buff (I don' know anyting) but I know it was working and for some reason now it's not. I was messing with some security settings and cleaning up my Inetpub\wwwroot folder and eventually I noticed my php page wasn't functioning anymore.

I'm running WinXP Pro, and just reinstalled IIS 5.1. I got the php binary from php.net and installed it (ver 4.3.7). I gave IUSR Read & Execute privileges to php.exe and php4ts.dll and IUSR Read privileges to sessiondata and uploadtemp directories, which is what the installer said I would probably have to do for all practical purposes.

The security settings on the wwwroot files all have IUSR access privileges.

The .php file in question uses some output generated into an .xml file by a BitTorrent client (Azureus). The first time I put all the chunks together it worked fine, the php script executed correctly, drew data from the xml file and displayed it neatly formatted the way it was supposed to. Now all I get is this...

CGI Error
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:

As little as I know, it seems obvious that the error is that no "HTTP headers" are being "returned".

I really don't know too much about php yet. I figure I'm not doing anything grossly complicated so the error must be pretty basic.

The php binary automatically puts in cgi.force_redirect = 0 into c:\windows\p... Read more

I have Windows XP Pro. upgraded from Windows Home. Its Medion MD40100 Notebook, Pentium 4. I reformated the Harddisk/copied everything on external Harddrive and upgraded to Windows XP Professional. Know my USB ports don't work, or do they?

I have a mouse and seperate keyboard attached through USB (i have 4 ports on the back of the laptop) and IF AND ONLY IF..they are connected on a reboot they work. If i unplug them after the setup is complete, they will not work again unless I shut off/ plug them in/ reboot. Then poof they work again. None of these ports seem to work after the start up.

My system will not boot with the external harddrive plugged in, and so thus will certainly not work after the start up. It doesn't turn on and doesn't appear in Device Manager or anywhere on the computer system. Windows XP does not even report: new hardware attached. Nothing.

any help or suggestions would be greatly apppreciated.

xx

Answer:i dunno what to do anymore!

I should also note: If I need to buy something, i will, I just really need access to the external Harddrive as it has all my backup information. Thanks again.

Ok i dont know very little about vid cards and am looking to upgrade my piece of crap geforce4 mx440. My comp specs are AMD XP 1700+ (buying a new processor long with vid card, probably XP 2800+), 1gb DDR, 400watt power, 8x AGP motherboard. I only want to spend 100-150 and have been told to buy the geforce4 FX5700 Ultra and that its the best card in that price range although the top end of that range. Is there any cheaper or better cards for that price?? Oh by the way i think i like the geforce over ATI been told the drivers are better so if its an ATI card it would have to be quite a bit better than the 5700 ultra.

Any input is appreciated =)

Answer:dunno what to buy ?? vid cards

hey i had the 440, well my dad did, we just upgraded to a pny geforce fx 5700 LE optima 128mb ddr agp, it hasn't failed yet and my dad got it for like 110, i think it's realy some thing like 130.

Greetings people of the Sevenforums community.

My computer is pretty old. It's been here since like 2006(7).
The only thing that has been replaced so far is the GFX Card because it died and nothing more..

But for a very long time now, like 12-8-2013 it has been excessively BSOD'ing. With different error types and I'm really clueless about what to do..

I got a nice list of minidumps zipped into a folder.
(Note: I didn't use the sevenforums tool on the PC, because it crashes before I even get to windows)

I'll attach the .zip.. hope anyone can be of help.

With a friendly greet,
Rimikumo

Answer:PC gets different BSOD's.. Dunno how to fix

Rimikumo, upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Also, Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Stress test the CPU.

Hi, starting from yesterday night I've been getting these hits from my Kerio Firewall where a bunch of nowheres try to connect to my "Task Scheduler Engine" and the application involved on my PC is c:/Programs/WINNT/system32/mstask.exe
I've scanned the file using Norton AntiVirus but it was not identified as a virus. I tried to quarantine it but even after the quarantine there's still hits from my Kerio Firewall.
Also, at the same time I've found a Download.Trojan virus in my PC and I've deleted it. I am not sure if there is any connection between the Trojan virus and mstask.exe.
As I am a total idiot in computers, can someone tell me if this is a virus and what should I do with it. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Answer:I dunno if this is a virus

Hi innewton, mstask is a windows scheduler, not sure why it it coming up as a virus, I included a link to info on it.

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/mstask/

Also you might try a different firewall, I use sygate it's free and very good, heres a link.

Good luck.

my pc crashes when playing games. initially i thought this was a lot of problems but after resitting all of the pc and removing a faulty stick of ram i am still crashing. i cant properly install the radeon 9250 drivers from the ATI site when i download them and i have re-dloaded them several times to make sure it wasnt the download that was corrupted. for this reason i have no catalyst control cente even tho my dload included it. the pc tends to crash when loading new areas and other load intensive actions. i play no games that need a top end or even mid range pc to operate properly. my hard drive has recently been improved - it was properly cleaned before installing. it may have been in storage for upto a year before i put it in my pc but it was stored properly (in a uv bag in a box in a store room with many others).

i dont know if the problem is purely down to my graphics not installing properly tho i wonder if this is because my pc isnt saving data correctly.

games i play: Guild Wars, Anarchy Online (more crashing in GW tho i dunno if that game has installed properly either)

pc specs: 2100+ athlon processor, 512mb RAM, radeon 9250 gfx card. MOBO that supports all 3. windows xp 32x operating system (copy)

if anyone has a clue where to help me start that would be brilliant

Answer:i dunno where to start

So have you tested the memory? If not I'd do it, or even do it again to make sure you don't have more memory problems: http://www.memtest.org/

Also inspect the capacitors on the motherboard, see here for what they look like: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=195

Also for the ATI drivers, you have to use version 6.5 or older, the latest no longer support the Radeon 9250 and older cards.
