Hjt Log; Virus; Can Only Open Files In Safe/command Line Mode

Question: Hjt Log; Virus; Can Only Open Files In Safe/command Line Mode

Can't open "my computer" or "control panel" or any other programs in normal or safe mode. In normal or safe mode, when I click on icons or shortcuts, instead of opening or starting the target, a shortcut is created on the decktop???

All help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Here's the HJT log:

Preferred Solution: Hjt Log; Virus; Can Only Open Files In Safe/command Line Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hjt Log; Virus; Can Only Open Files In Safe/command Line Mode

I have read the list of things that should be done to a hijacked computer before you post a HJT log but the only item on that list that the computer is able to do is to run HTJ from the command prompt (only in "safe mode with command prompt", not even from normal "safe mode"). So if there is anything else that should be done from "safe mode with command prompt" before posting another HJT log I will do it.

Any help is appreciated,

I have a laptop from a friend who contactd Dell about an issue. The person at Dell told him to use msconfig to set safe mode minimal.

During further discussioin with the Dell rep, he told my friend he needed to do a factory restore. I've done that for my friend, not realizing he had set the flag for Safe Mode boot in MSConfig, and now the restore can't finish because it keeps trying to boot into safe mode.

Is there a way to turn this off in the command prompt. I can get to the Startup Tools of windows 7 with CTRL+F11.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated. I can also get into the system files with linux to edit if needed. I just don't know what to do.

Thanks,

Answer:Turn off Safe Mode boot from Command Line?

Hi bmcgonag,

Follow the steps listed in the following tutorial (Option 3: Using BCDEDIT Command in a Command Prompt; serial number 6) Safe Mode. This is likely to help you get the notebook started in Windows normal mode.

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

How do I get this to boot normally again.

I did this right after I did a repair of C:\ (vista partition) to reinstall the boot ladder to get my other install of Vista on another disk. That went fine and I can boot to both OSs, but my C:\ Vista boot keeps going into safe mode with command prompt. I tried repairing it again (booting from the vista dvd) but that didn't do it.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Vista Ult only boots into safe mode with command line.

I don't have Vista myself yet, but here's an idea for you to try. Maybe you can change it in the boot.ini file?

I purchased a software which can change the pitch when play songs by using WMP, if I play songs from Windows file browser, then I can see the plug-in software appear in WMP, so I can open the tool to change the pitch of songs, however if I open songs from
my written program, like ReturnValte=Shell("C:\Program Files\Windows Media Played\wmplayer.exe", & fullpath,3)?then I can not see the plug-in tool in WMP. Does anyone know what I miss in the command I wrote in my program (it is Excel VBA)
Thank you

I've searched around for some fixes to this, but everything I try and do seems to require me to open an exe file, which I can no longer do. I had tried to open an .exe file and was prompted to choose a file to open it with. The file did not open, and all .exe files began to associate themselves with the program I tried to open the original file with, as now all .exe files display the same graphic icon. I had a mess of a time getting command prompt open, only being able to do so by restarting in safe mode or shift+right clicking a folder. In there, I copied regedit.exe to regedit.com but it seems I can't even open regedit.com I'll click to open the icon, then I'll be prompted for authorization to open the file, but nothing will open. Every time I attempt to open a .exe file I am prompted "Error in command line" and must close. When opening the task manager, I can no longer ask for all user processes to be displayed. I've attempted to install some programs, such as hijack this, but as their installer is in .exe format, there's no such luck. Any ideas on what could be causing this and what I'll need to do to fix it? With an error like this, the PC is more or less a tableweight.

Answer:.EXE files wont open- Error in command line

Repair .exe files
Download the zip here Vista exe fix (Right click here and select Save as...)
Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an administrator to apply these fixes.
It will repair your exe file association in the registry.
If you are sucessful with the above instructions you should now be able to post a Hijackthis log. Please include it in your next reply

This all started when computer would lock up after about 5-10 mins of use. I figured it was a virus since our virus protection lapsed(go figure). So first thing I did was run hijackthis and I will post the log from that. Then downloaded Malwarebytes and did a scan and removed all that with no luck on the computer working any better. So I figured it was time to start safe mode. Well, that just got me in to more trouble. I now boot up to safe mode with the cmd.exe screen. I have tried F8, F6, F12 and esc. They all get me to the same screen of starting in safe mode or windows normally. Anything I choose gets me back to the command prompt in safe mode.

One last thing, this is a Gateway Netbook without a cd rom.

Hi,I read the forum that i should read before posting anything. I tried to follow the instructions like installing CCleaner. Unfortunately as i said i cant open any .exe files. trying to open them just hold the computer for a bit then i get an error.( I attached a picture of the error)So the things I tried so far are the simple things, safe-mode, cmd in admin to use certain command prompt, regedit and things like that. unfortunately  nothing of these work, some of them taking longer to open then just show an error message like the one above. I cant restart my pc because it freezes when i try to restart, I had this issue a long time ago. So i can only shutdown then turn it on again.I downloaded few files today to code something and i noticed that firewall got shutdown for some reason, trying to turn it back on and nothing happen and same error again. Then all errors came up. That's how i am figuring it is a virus. I have Windows 10 if there is anyway i can get logs without installing any program I think I can do it. I will stop using my computer until I get some kind of answer as instructed. Thank you

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. 1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. *************************************************************************How long has it been doing this? I have the police / department of justice virus that has infected my pc severely. I am running xp. I can't boot into safe mode, or safe mode with command prompt. I tried downloading hitmanpro kickstarter and it won't boot to the flash drive (it attempts), but just loops back to the same message. I am stuck in a cycle and not getting anywhere.

downloaded the reatogo-x software, burned to a cd, and attempted to boot to this cd. It said it was starting the program, etc -- but it brought me to the blue screen of death.

Whenever I boot my computer normally, it works fine until I try to run a program, or open a folder, or do anything, and then my computer freezes. It works fine in safe mode. I have run virus scans with Avast and Malwarebytes, and found nothing. A couple days ago, avast started telling me that it was automatically running some program (C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\Utils\FjOddUnl.exe) in sandbox for some reason, but it never came up with any concrete problem, so I'm not really sure how much that matters. This laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook T-series) is a couple of years old, but I just had it repaired (under warranty) a couple weeks ago, and they replaced the HDD and the motherboard, and I really wasn't expecting to have problems like this again so soon.

this has been occurring ever since my computer was diagnosed with a trojan. i removed it, and ever since then no .EXE files will open. I will click on any .EXE file, the revolving circle signifying loading will show for a second, and then it won't load at all - the program is not present in the task manager.

the weird thing is, there is no difference in safe mode. no .EXE file will run in any variation of safe mode. this prevents me from running ANYTHING apart from the command prompt, viewing folders, and notepad. i cannot load the internet, a virus scanner, NOTHING. it is difficult to fix something when one is literally unable to access anything.

i have attempted the 'repair my computer' option when i press f8, but it says it can't be repaired automatically. i downloaded a registry fix from a different computer, but it reads the message "Could not import exefix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes".

I cannot load a registry fix, virus scanner, or the internet. i STILL cannot open .EXE files in any variation of safe mode. i do not have the windows 7 disc so i cannot reformat. additionally, the trojan appears to have erased all my system restore points, so i cannot restore to any previous time.

i have literally run out of ideas. i can't even install any fixes! any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Answer:.EXE Files Do Not Open - even in safe mode!

A long time ago, I had something similar happen to me. I found my computer infected with some variant of the WinA Lizard (or something like that) virus that infected every .exe file I ran while it was on my system. It hosed every executable on the HD b/c it actually infected my command.com (in windows 95 - shows you *how* long ago). I got lucky b/c I loved making all of my .ZIP files self extracting executable files, and hosed every single one of the. I was able to still manually open the files using WinZIP, but I learned then not to make self-extracting executable files anymore.

At any rate, though, I found so many residual problems with that system I eventually formatted and reinstalled my OS. In this case, unless you can figure out how to restore your system to work correctly, this may end up being your only option.

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Well, I've been scouring Google on our secondary computer all night, and I'm stumped. I'm also not completely tech savvy, so please forgive me.

My computer shut down by itself while I was typing an email. Rebooted and no exe files would open except IE 64 bit (as of six hours later, now that won't open either - opens, flashes, closes and says IE crashed). It has gone through numerous "windows won't start, repairing" screens. It has tried to system restore, but it doesn't fix the problem.

I cannot open in safe mode, and Task Manager is missing. I can open regedit but not msconfig (this is bothersome because I found a workaround for getting the system to reopen in safe mode by changing some configurations, but...) Can't open device manager as one option suggested looking for the possible virus culprit in the tools/drivers section.

I found a site that had an exe repair fix to either merge or import into the registry, but it keeps saying it can't do it because there are "processes running." Those boards suggested trying to the merge/import in safe mode, but as above..can't open in safe mode. Also since I have no task manager available, I can't manually end or suspend any processes.

Windows Defender runs but says everything is a-ok (clearly not).

Because I don't feel comfortable deleting anything from the registry, that's the only thing I haven't tried. Oh, I did find something that said to check the shell and one other place in the registry, bu... Read more

Answer:No exe files will open, nor msconfig or safe mode

Okay, I restarted and finally was able to get into msconfig. I set it up so the computer automatically starts in Safe Mode. Tried importing/merging that exe file again, and nope, says "other processes are running." Went into services through msconfig and shut down all services - still didn't work.

I also find a possible solution to create a new user - won't let me. Sigh....

Hey guys,

Was tasked to fix another laptop. Oddly enough this issue is similar to the one I fixed a few weeks ago, found here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic475072.html

This is for a Windows XP Media Center edition laptop. I attempted to run Last Known Good Configuration, however that didn't resolve anything. Reading the preparation guide, I attempted to download and run DDS.com, however it would not run on the laptop. When attempting to run that, as well as any of the internet programs on the laptop, I see the hour glass real quickly and then that's it. I didn't notice anything in the error logs regarding the applications attempting to run.

I attempted to run both Safe Mode and Safe Mode w/ command prompt. Safe mode will load, however it only gets me to the black splash screen saying it's in safe mode and the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+delete won't work for me to load explorer.

Please let me know where to start so that we can resolve this issue. I have a feeling where to start but I know as well as any it's very annoying when people want to jump 5 steps ahead.

Thanks!

Answer:Can't open any browsers, install files, no safe mode

My desktop after a while will not open any programs or files. I would say after 30 min to an hour. I have to reset the computer manually and the whole issue happens again. This doesn't appear to happen in safe mode though. I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains. I run windows 7 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Answer:computer unable to open files after a while, ok in safe mode

Hello prerunner97,

You could try a Clean Startup and see if you can determine a startup program you have that is causing the issue.
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

You stated "I've used multiple virus programs to remove them but the issue still remains."
Does that mean you found malware, and removed what was found?
If so, maybe there are still some malware problems?
I'm no Malware expert, but there is a SF System Security forum where you could add a thread explaining your issue, and experts there might be able to help you.

I have had this blasted virus before and have been able to kill it in Safe Mode but this one won't even allow me to go into Safe Mode. It will start opeing Safe but then logs out automatically. I am running Windows 7 64bit.

I did a bit of reading on this forum and saw a few things about running Farbar which I have but it didn't seem to do anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work computer and I can't go long without being able to use it.

Here is the FRST file Farbar generated.

Answer:Moneypak virus, can't even open in Safe Mode

It looks like I was able to resolve this one on my own (with an additional couple of hours of research). I was able to get to a command prompt and just run Malawarebytes from there to resolve to biggest problem then being able to log onto my system regularly I ran all the ancillary programs to make sure any leftover pieces were fixed or removed.

I have a Compaq laptop running Windows Vista Basic that can only open in safe mode. Trying to boot normaly flashes the windows crash screen for a second as soon as the Windows login screen comes up, and the computer reboots...over and over. I have tried Last Known Good Configuration, Restore point but still does the same thing upon rebooting normally. I can open to the safe mode and have tried scanning with Malware Bytes Anti Malware and Superantispyware (and running Rkill to stop processes that might be stopping them from scanning properly). Rkill only pulls up the regular desktop file running and both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware find multiple malware/registry key malware files. When I tell the programs (after running each individually after a clean reboot to safe mode) to delete the files, it restarts to remove the files to normal boot and again crashes at the windows login screen. Is there anything elase I can try? I was under the assumption that if my malware scans found items, then they also would be able to remove the files in safe mode.I am out of things to try. I tried going into the registry to delete some of the files the scans found, but they are back once the computer is restarted to safe mode and the scan is run again. The scans also do not give me the name of the virus(s) affecting the computer. It pulls up 19 registry items and 5 Browser Hijacker Deskbar items.Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Only open in Safe Mode, cannot remove virus

Have you tried rebooting back to Safe mode to finalize the removals?

Hey, i recently got a virus 2 days ago on my alienware M15x with windows 7. It started by restarting the computer without any warning. At that time, i wasnt aware that it was a virus. When i logged back on, i couldnt open any programs. The things i can open are certain folders but most are useless. I can also open system restore, but restoring my laptop to a earlier point in time did nothing. The virus was still there. I thought about restoring it to factory settings by booting from the cd. The first time i put in the cd, it worked but it was the wrong cd... Every other attempt afterward has failed to boot from the right cd which i found later. The cd drive may or may not be broken due to the virus. I can open bios, safe mode, pretty much everything before i login i think. But in safe mode, nothing works, programs still wont open. I tried putting antiviruses on my external from this computer and opening them in safe mode on my laptop with no success. When i look at the task manager, i see the programs im trying to open showing up in the tasks section but disappearing quickly. I think thats all, i might be forgetting something. But does anyone think they have any idea on how to fix this?

Hey everyone,

I am new here so thanks for listening. My boyfriend left an internet window open overnight and I came back and my system was shut off. I don't know if we had a power failure or not but when I log in there is one of those ridiculous anti-virus viruses that will not allow anything to open at all. Not taskmngr or anything says its infected. I try to boot into safe mode but the comp gets stuck at crcdisk.sys. I am on another computer to ask this question. Any ideas on how to get around the virus in regular mode or boot successfully in safemode?

Hello Vista Smart Community,
I have a problem with a stupid malware virus on my Window Vista laptop (x32). This is the typical malware virus (system tools) that pops multiple windows telling me that my PC is infected with viruses and then is asking me to pay them (ransom scam). In the past I was able to fix the issue by going to safe mode and then fixing the proxy on my IE and then downloading legitimates virus killer. This time, is a little harder for me to kill this virus. This time the virus is not allowing me to open IE at all in safe mode and is using ?Window Vista security center? as the name versus the other know names. Can someone please help me figure out how to kill this Malware when I cannot access IE?

Answer:Malware virus on Window Vista won't let me open IE on safe mode?

Since some days I have, probably (?) the lilyjade virus on my computer, as I am constantly redirected when using Internet Explorer (or even Firefox).
I have gone through some of the topics to try to post some logs, but the computer freezes every time with I run DDS or Combofix. TDSS killer could not find anything.
I can also not reboot in safe mode, as the systems says that it is not possble (?).
AVG did not find anyrthing, but keeps coming with a message that my Rundll32.exe file is infected.
Also the computer starts to become more and more slow....

Any help would be appreciated.

Start it with the line +set dedicated 1. Gives you a dedicated server, which is just a command line window. If you want it to be public, set it to 2.

I need to determine if there are command line parameters or switches to pass to Window's PDF reader App that would allow me to open a PDF to a specific page. I have a x86 database application that allows me to run command line scripts. The user presses a button which then opens a PDF to a specific page depending on the button pressed. Since the PDF reader App does not use an exe, I am not sure how to do this. I know I can install Adobe Reader and use a command line like

AcroRD32.exe /A "page=10" PDF file

but I would rather use Window's PDF App. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Command line parameters to open PDF

But will your target users have the same PDF App you want to use, same version of Windows? That's an extremely important consideration.

Hi everyone

I am trying to find a way of toggling the wifi radio on and off using command line? The same goes for the airplane mode.

I already know that netsh can disable the adapter but thats not what I want. I want to just disable/enable the radio for the adapter. Windows 10 has the buttons on the interface called where you can turn wifi off or enable airplane mode.

The laptop hardware switch when enabled does the same therefore there must be a call made from the hardware to the OS for this. Just can't find what it is.

Please help.

Maybe you will be able to find sthg you can use there.

Hi I'm not sure if I posted this in the right forum for this question but im going to ask anyway.

I am new at the whole bash scripting thing, but long story short i was wondering if there was a way to keep the CMD window open while it is doing its command, what I am trying to ask is if there is a script that I could insert that would keep the window from being able to be closed by the user. if that makes sense.

Answer:Bash Scripting for holding command line open

I don't know of anything like this. No matter what you do, the user can always click on the X to close the Command Prompt window.

I'm trying to run a program that will prevent Windows 7 from sleeping, then run some batch commands, and finally close the program. The problem is that when I execute the program from the batch file, the processing stops and waits. A simple script such as this doesn't even work:

Code:
path:\insomnia.exe

taskkill /im insomnia.exe
Is there a way to open up a program and then move on to the next set of commands without waiting?

Answer:Command Line Program Open Freezes Execution

Code:
path:\insomnia.exe

taskkill /im insomnia.exe
Hi -

Try this - copy into batch file -

Code:

taskkill /im insomnia.exe /f

To execute it, RIGHT-click on your batch file, select "Run as Administrator"

Your call, but I would just change the power option to "high performance" when you don't want it to sleep. Please note: I have NOT tested the insomnia.exe app.

I need to be able to open PDF files from Win 8 32 bit DOS Command Line to complete a DOS macro for a document management database I've used for 20+ years.

On XP Systems I simply have macro grab file name from database and type >Start "Path\filename.pdf"

Does Windows 8.1 have a similar capability? I'm using ClassicShell.

I understand that Start now opens another instance of cmd, but is there a work around to launch PDFs from command prompt and hand back control to DOS after file is open?

Thank you,

I once came across this, when I didn't really need at, but wrote it down for future use.

I later used it to get into safe mode, and it was fast and easy.

Now I can't find where I wrote it, can't remember it, and can't find it in searches.

It was booting into dos and writing a command that started safe mode.

Also, are there other simple dos commands that would be good/handy to know? A page somewhere listing them?

I remember once when I first had a computer, starting it in dos to see what it was, then not knowing how to get out of it.

I tried everything I could think of, and only got "bad command file name" (which seems to be dos' 2nd name I finally turned it off and restarted it.

Someone later told me to type "exit".

My first computer had WINDOWS 98 so I missed the pre-windows dos era.

Knowing something about it, and useful commands (and spacing of them) would really come in handy at times.

A "cheat sheet" or something?

thanks,

Carrie

I recently attempted to clean my brother's computer after he aquired a virus from the torrent file program he uses. Regardless, I cleaned a trojan and a backdoor from his system from safe mode. I can not boot in normal mode. Everytime i try the system gets hung up at the windows loading screen then the screen turns black and sits there. I have to hard reboot. I ahve used a repar CD and i have come across an error 0x800700b7, i have also recived this when i tried to work around this problem "identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}"

Answer:System will only start in Safe mode, Clean virus in safe mode

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Using Windows 7 64-bit.

When I click a Word document in Explorer or on the Start menu, I get the error "There was a problem sending the command to the program". I'm using Word 2003, but I don't get this problem with Excel 2003.

I know that when I try to open a document this way, the program uses the command switches "/n" -- which means "open a new instance of Word", -- and "/dde" -- which I don't know what it means. I do know that I don't want the /n switch.

1) How can I remove the /n switch? Remember, I'm not clicking on a shortcut, but on a document icon. I know how to assign the "Open With" command, but I don't see any options about changing command-line switches.

2) Is the /dde switch causing my problem? How do I remove it?

Has anyone tried to use the zipfldr.dll in windows XP to zip files in a command line style from a batch file?

I've done this on NT when invoking winzip but wondered whether I can do the same on XP using the inbuilt Zip file tool. I have found some information to the effect that I might be able to use something like:

rundll32.exe zipfldr.dll,<entrypoint> <arguments>

however all I have managed to get to so far is opening up the directory that I've entered the files that I want to zip into, i.e.

rundll32.exe zipfldr.dll,RouteTheCall c:\zipthesefiles

Any help/hints would be appreciated.

Hello, I am trying to learn the command line, and in that regard have purchased, The Windows Command Line
Beginners Guide by Jonathan Moeller. This is an excellent resource, but I can't find anything about renaming
folders or files from the command line. I realize I can do do these tasks from the GUI, but I need real life examples to practice with, using the CLI.
A related question: Is it possible to rename user accounts from the CLI ? And in particular administrator accounts?
Perhaps someone could direct me to a link, thread or tutorial if the answer is too long to reply to here.
Thank you for looking.

HELLO, I WOULD LIKE TO INSTALL A PROGRAM OFF A MEMERY STICK ( DRWEB OR MALWARE ). MY COMPUTER IS INFECTED AND THEY ONLY THING I CAN GET INTO IS THE SAFE MODE COMMAND PROMPT. SO IS THERE A WAY I CAN GET THESE ANTI VIRUS PROGRAMS OFF THE MEMERY STICK TO THE COMPUTER AND RUN THEM?????

Answer:WHEN IN SAFE MODE COMMAND HOW DO I INSTALL

A few of the anti virus programs have a BOOT disk with their AV on it. You will put this in your cd drive, and restart the computer. It will boot into the AV program and (hopefully) scan and begin to clean the computer. http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-rescue-cdIf you have a compter in that state, it may be easier to reinstall your operating system.

I've got a very specific task in mind: I'm creating a CD full of mp3's which will play on my portable cd player. BUT: for it to 'see' the mp3s, all the file names have to be preceded by 3 digit track numbers, i.e. 001, 002, NOT 1, 2, or 01, 02.
Rather than re-label 'em all by hand, I'd like to use the rename utility. The only problem is that the rename utility doesn't 'add' the zeroes in front, it 'overlays' the zeroes over the existing label, so I get a bunch of files all numbered '00'.

Simplified Example: I've got a list of ten cuts in the album "Call Me A Cab":
0 - call me adam
1 - call me betty
2 - call me carl
3 - call me david
4 - call me edna
5 - call me fergus
6 - call me gary
7 - call me henrietta
8 - call me ian
9 - call me jane
10 - call me kerry

I position myself in the command window and issue the command:
ren *.* 0*.*

I would think that the interpretation of that command would be take every file in the directory, and place a '0' in front of it. But when I execute the instruction and look at my directory I have:

0 - call me adam
0 - call me betty
0 - call me carl
0 - call me david
0 - call me edna
0 - call me fergus
0 - call me gary
0 - call me henrietta
0 - call me ian
0 - call me jane
00 - call me kerry

The instruction didn't 'add' the leading zero, it replaced the first filename character with the leading zero (It has nothing to do with it being a... Read more

Hello Everyone,
I am having problems with accessing the files on a folder through the command line. Whenever I enter the dir command, it displays the folders on D: drive but I really want to get to the files inside the folders on the D; drive. So, what command line should I use to access the files on the folder which is located in the D: drive? You help will be highly appreciated.

Answer:Problems With Accessing Files Via Command Line

Hi maxx247

To list the contents of a directory use: dir/w

the '/w' is for wide list format, for directory with lots of files. It allows you to see each screen, otherwise a directory with lots of files will scroll right past you!

If you know the file type you're looking for, like 'exe's use: dir *.exe where * is a wild card. Alternatively, the wild card can be used for the file type of you know the name of the file: dir hello.*

If you need help in Command Prompt type : dir /?

Hi,

I was trying to clear the index.dat files through a boot in "safe mode and using the command prompt"/clear Index.dat files. However, the screen freezes and the system (WIN2KPRO) does not completely initialize.

I have again rebooted my system in "safe mode", opened the command prompt but have been denied access to erase the index.dat files (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process).

I have two questions, :
1) Why could I not boot in "safe mode and using the command prompt"

2)Why when I am in safe mode, I still have no access to erase .DAT files?

Ok, this is so screwed up you just won't believe it.

I had a problem that I won't go into now but I got to the point where I decided the only recourse was to re-install XP. After the install, it told me I needed to register before I could log in. Ok, fine. So I hit OK and it crashes. I figured out that it would let me log in if I booted into safe mode. At some point I set msconfig to automatically boot into safe mode. Now when it boots into safe mode I get the message requireing me to register, but then I get a message saying I can't register when in safe mode. But until I log in, I can't set msconfig to boot normally. So I'm stuck. Where do I find the ini or whatever file that is booting it into safe mode?

Answer:How to turn off safe mode in a command prompt

well, if you can enter safe mode - go to run -> msconfig -> boot.ini -> and uncheck boot in safe mode.

You only need to activate windows, registring is optional.

I tried firing up my computer and was greeted by "pic 1", so i google'd the file line and discovered it has to do with Webroot security software, perhaps an up gone bad or something.

after reading on forums for webroot i have to get to safe mode remove the software, reboot and maybe reinstall if i still want to use that software

So i am able to get to "picture 2" screen and i have tried every option there and it just returns me to "pic 1" a dozen times.

I am able to get to a command prompt so i am curious is there a way to get to safe mode from the command prompt ?

Answer:From command prompt can i get to safe mode in windows 10 ?

Yes from your command prompt type msconfig Then hit your enter key.

Check the box Safe Boot then reboot. You will also have to re-check that box to off, before your next reboot, or it will keep booting you back into Safe Mode.

Hello,

I have here a pretty stupid problem. I had to enter Windows 8 in safe mode with command prompt to do something. After I did that, I pressed alt+F4 to exit the command prompt, so now I have a complete black screen with a cursor that I can move. I want to exit the safe mode now, to reboot again in normal mode. However, there is nothing to click on, alt+F4 doesn't work, ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, etc. There are some things that do work (for example win+P to connect a second screen, but I don't need that...). When I press the power button, it just goes to sleep. So I just want to get out of this situation. If anyone knows how to bring up command prompt again or shut it down completely, let me know please.

Thanks,
Japeroen

Hi and Welcome to BleepingComputer,

Not all anitvirus programs work in safe mode, I don't know about Symantec but I do know my ZoneAlarm does not. I do not see the reason to run it in safe mode. If you are really wanting to run stuff in safe mode, run SuperAntiSpyware in it and just run your antivirus program in regular windows.

Btw, it sounds like you had something on there that has backdoor capabilities and if that is the case, then unless you reformat the computer, it will never be truly safe again.

My mom was surfing the web regarding the Golden Globes and fell victim to some website that spawned an annoying webpage that was playing some message about "Your machine has been infected and call this number blah! blah!" She did not click any button and I navigated her over the phone to kill the task in Task Manager.
The problem is that when she launches the browser Edge goes back to that page.
Simple solution, I had disconnect her disable wireless and then restart the browser. Then had her kill her tabs one by one followed by clearing cookies, history etc. Then we ran a malware scan and virus scan (good thing she is retired because that took forever). Nothing was found and the page is gone. We enabled Wi-Fi and everything was running again and she can once again catch up on her gossip.
This leads me to my question. Is there a command line parameter you can pass to Edge to have is start without tabs reopening? I have found various websites that show how to modifying the registry -- something that I wish to avoid.
Any other options available so should this happen again I can quickly dispatch of the issue?

well, from what I know, if the desktop is shared, you may be able to do copy (full path name and file name) \\computername\shared folder.

For example: copy c:\XLSDOCS\ \\WKS15\DESKTOP

note I have not done this in command line. I would suggest making a shortcut to a shared folder instead so you can drag and drop.

Hi there

Is there a Windows command that can copy files from say directory A to directory B but skip any with the same name I don't want to update even if say directory A has a newer version than directory B --simply use existing names --if it exists skip.

I'm trying to replicate the Linux command :

rsync -a -v --ignore-existing <src> <dst> where src is source directory and dst is destination / target directory (or device etc)

(This command also has options to OVERWITE target directory with newer file -- I don't want that option yet - the example I gave will ignore existing files if they already exist in the target directory. Note also - this doesn't CARE what's in the files - it's purely on the NAME - no dates / attributes /size etc considerations are checked - simply the NAME - which is why this job can be lightning fast even for quite a lot of files.

What I'm trying to do is automate sending files to a NAS server every so often (say once a day / week) from WINDOWS clients when new files have been created --I don't need to backup all the windows clients - users can do that themselves - There's a job on the Clients that can backup / restore their desktop in entirety which is run on demand.

Any ideas --shouldn't be too hard but I don't really know too much of Windows possibilities from the CLI.

Note I don't want a GUI --need a command as this will be (eventually) an automated background process on the Windows clients.

Hello,

I recently reinstalled Windows 7 on my Dell Studio 1555 laptop. I did this by booting from the Windows 7 upgrade disk that came with my machine (it was purchased just before 7 came out, and Dell sent the upgrade CD later).

I've installed very little on the machine - Firefox, dropbox, PDF-XChange Viewer.

One of the main uses I have for the laptop is to take it to class with me, open pdf notes from the teacher, and take notes using pdf xchange viewer. I've never had issues before. Now when I open a file, edit it, and try to save, it just gets stuck at "Saving Document, please wait". Similarly, if I try to copy files into or out of a folder, explorer hangs, and will stay hung for hours, until I kill and restart it. I've also noticed that there's often a green bar filling the address line in explorer that takes a long time to fill, and then stops around 95% full. I've also tried opening a command prompt and doing a move or copy from there, but it just hangs. I've let all of these hang for 24+ hours before killing them on my own.

At first I thought it was something with dropbox, since I was working mostly out of the dropbox folder, and it worked fine. But then I uninstalled dropbox, and I'm still having issues.

I've got Bitdefender Antivirus Free running, but I've tried disabling, and still had problems.

Any idea what I should try next? It feels like something has the files open and/or locked, but how do I figure out what?

Thanks,
DCHeel

Answer:Can't save over files, explorer / command line hang

If it was my computer the first thing I would check is see how full the drive is. If you don't have room you will not be able to save anything and the system will work goofy.

Hello, I'm having some problems with Winrar.
I'm using the command line to compress files into a rar, but then when I try to use the command line to decompress the same files I get a "No files to extract" error.

None of the rars is empty and the files can actually be extracted using the windows GUI, the problem is with the command line.

I'm using the following command to compress the files (with different paths):

Code:
"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\winrar.exe" a -v4400m -m5 -ag -r -ac -ao -to10m -IBCK C:\Backups\DocumentsBackup C:\Documents\*.*
And then I use this command to extract (again with different paths):

Code:
"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\winrar.exe" x -r -IBCK C:\Backups\DocumentsBackupYYYYMMDDhhmmss.rar C:\Temp
I already tried downloading the latest version of winrar but it didn't solve my problem.
I'm using Windows Server 2003 BTW.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm a big fan of doing any and all security related scans in safe mode.

Can you, should you, is it of any advantage to perform the various on-line scans in "Safe mode with internet access"? Perhaps sounds like a silly question but the idea just hit me and it does sound logical. Wondering if there were any pitfalls/negative aspects of doing such.

P. S. Are there any "new" on-line scans out or are they all considered new as they are updated on a regular basis?

Answer:Safe Mode With Internet- Good For On-line Scans....?

When your Windohs PC is started in "safe" mode, it is started with a limited set of drivers, and should be used mainly to troubleshoot problems that may occur.
If you want REAL security, use a firewall and anti-virus software to protect your self. You might also consider an alternative browser to Internet Explorer.

Personally, I use Firefox, which is a memory hog, but more secure than IE. As far as firewall, I have a NAT firewall built in to my router, and use Comodo firewall software. For antivirus, I use AVG Free edition. The biggest thing that protects me is the NAT firewall built into my router, because my PC is not "seen" on the internet, and thereby not subject to attack. I use the software firewall to prevent programs from 'phoning home,' as the NAT firewall prevents traffic coming in, but not out. My router is a Linksys BEFSR41. This router has been a workhorse, and given me no problems in six years of continued use.

Hi, my computer is infected with some type of malware, but in trying to fix it i might have caused more damage.

Malware/virus had disabled the "Run" option from the start menu, as well as the Task manager. I tried to start it in safe mode (by rebooting/ F8/ Safe mode) but the computer would stop in the middle of the process and shut down. So i restarted the computer in normal mode, searched for msconfig and selected the option to start in safe mode by default. I somehow thought that doing so would guarantee that the safe mode process would be completed. Looking back, i should have thought it out better...

Now, the computer immediately tries to start in safe mode, but again it stops in the middle of the process and shuts down.

Is there any way to disable starting in safe mode from the command prompt? (since I can still access it through Recovery console)....

thanks for your advice

Answer:[SOLVED] Disable Safe Mode from Command prompt?

Hi fcojmejia !

What happens when you press F8 at startup and choose last known good configuration or normal mode ?

If the above doesn't work you'll need to modify the boot.ini file. Checking the safe mode option in msconfig adds a /safeboot:minimal option at the end of the operating system line in the boot.ini file. You can either boot on an XP CD, enter the recovery console and type bootcfg /rebuild at the c:\windows\ prompt to rebuild a normal boot.ini file, or boot using another bootable CD that supports NTFS to edit the boot.ini file manually.

Once you're back in Windows follow these instructions to post a log and get some help from our security analysts about your malware infection.

I have moved your duplicate post, since duplicated posts are not permitted.
Try with a clean boot. If this solves your problem follow the instructions. This will work with Seven as well as Vista.
If it does not work. Run a full anti virus scan, download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

Answer:Safe mode with Command prompt doesn't work....

I could be wrong (I haven't tried this yet), but I think using that option in Vista/7 results in a logon screen prompting you for administrative credentials before you can get to the command prompt.

Answer:stuck in safe mode with command promt windows 10

For system restore you type or copy this into cmd. rstrui.exe
if that does not help try typing sfc /scannow and see if it finds any faults and fixes them. it ususally takes about 20 minutes to run.
