Preferred Solution: Internet Speed Very Slow For 256k, Very Slow Start Up, Very Laggy When Multi Tasking

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys and Girls,

First off, I'd like to give you my laptop specs before describing my physical problem to help elimnate the need to point at computer specs for the cause.

HP Pavilion dv5000
Microsoft Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3
AMD Turion 64 Mobile ML-37 @ 2.0GHz
2GB DDR
ATi Xpress 200 Mobile

Okay, I understand that my laptop isn't dual core or it doesn't have ddr2 ram, however it has been working fine before this issue. It also has XP Pro instead of the memory hungry vista.

So just recently, my boot up takes around 5 minutes on a good day, and when the windows music plays it skips violently as it boots up. Music on my computer played through vlc media player also skips along with youtube videos. Beside the music skipping left and right, my overall computer performance is very very slow. In efforts to fix the problem, I have done the following.

CCleaner - Found about 800MB of temp files and useless files. All of which I deleted. Also found 102 registry errors, which I backed up my registry before fixing all of them.

Spybot Search and Destroy - Update definitions and found nothing after a full search.

Sound Driver - Reinstalled and yet the probelm remains.

Useless Programs - I went and unistalled multiple programs that have no purpose to me.

MSCONFIG - Set my startup to only start one windows command, sound controller. Yet the boot takes at least 5 minutes.

AVG Free Scan - Set the scan to slow and let it go overnight, found nothing beside... Read more

Hi All

Recently my pc has been acting up. On start up i get missing .dll error messages, alot of pop ups and my upload speed is really slow. Download speed is 9700 kbps but my upload speed is only 20kbps.

I tried ad-aware to remove bad files but that did not do anything.

Below is my HijackThis log
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Slow upload speed, missing .dll files, slow start up

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.

TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Well for the past 4-5 months I've been experiencing internet that seems to continue to get slower and slower and it'll lag me out of online games most of the time. It really seems like the connection just completely stops anywhere from a second to even 10-20 seconds sometimes and it'll take forever to load webpages sometimes too. We have replaced both our modem (now a linksys) and router (now a belkin) and still have been experiencing these problems. Seems like after our old router broke that it stopped working right and just gets worse and worse. Also the light for modem goes yellow quite often which I believe means that it's having trouble working right. Oh and my ISP is Cox and we have yet to have them look at it but we have called about the issues we were having. Any help?

I am using Windows XP and have had my netbook for about 2.5 years. Over the weekend, I noticed a drastic slowdown. Originally, it was while watching television shows online. Whether on hulu.com or huludesktop.com or nbc.com, they all would play a minute or so and stop and then another and then stop, with audio ending up unsynchronized with the video. After that frustration, I started noticing the computer itself seemed slow. Just switching tabs, minimizin windows, et cetera. Now I am worried that I might have picked up some sort of virusy-like substance because I was browsing some seemingly sketchy sites before it started.

What I have tried so far: restarting, different browsers, a different profile, running Spybot, Malware Bytes, and Avira. I checked my msconfig and regedit (under Run for trojans, but did not check anything else in there). I have a HijackThis log, but no idea how to read it (and noticed this forum said not to post it).

Answer:Very slow/laggy Both internet and offline

Can you post the logs from Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Avira?

Hi,

Usually my internet connection is fine, surfing is good and playing games on my PS3 is quick and smooth. For the past few weeks however my connection has become a slow, stuttering/laggy mess and when I play COD I have the worst connection stats and I am usually chucked from a game.

Where do I start with my investigations? I do know there is no general issue with broadband in my area.

Would you guys need some stats from me to order to help?

Regards,

C h r e d g e.

Hi! A couple days ago my computer has been acting really badly.
It's very slow and laggy when it comes to the Internet and Desktop, when before, both ran fast.
I'm also having a problem with A LOT of pop-ups when I use the Internet.
Pop-ups are shut off (I use Firefox btw.) and they hadn't started appearing until a couple days ago.
Really hope you could help! Thanks in advanced.

Hello,

I am having issues with my internet. It is very frustrating because I occasionally appear to solve the problem and the internet becomes very slow and loses connection temporarily. Sometimes a couple times a day this occurs where the internet gets really slow and some pages load halfway and occasionally the internet just goes out all together. This issue is particularly odd because it appears that my laptop is the only one that gets this issue. There are two other laptops that do not appear to have this issue using the same connection. I have previously tried updating my drivers and other windows updates. I have also reset my router settings, moved my laptop to a different locations, changed channels on my router, and none have worked as of yet.

Any ideas to solutions for this issue would be largely appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello, I noticed this weird issue, when I plug my laptop in to charge it, it becomes slows and laggy + noticed that this only happens while it's connected to the internet through WI-FI and not Ethernet.
Tried playing with control panel with no success :(
Note: It's not the battery as i removed and the laptop still lags + I use the official charger, the one that came in the box with VAIO

Purchased Windows 8 Pro with a new computer system, an HP Envy, last week for work.

Have a dedicated 20 down and 20 up connection that is functioning at speed.

Loading internet pages with Windows 8 is incredibly slow. Had the very same connection with a 7 year old HP using Windows XP and the speed blew this away.

Help?

Answer:Slow Slow internet speed with Windows 8

Slow pages are usually a sign of a dns problem. How do you have DNS configured? Are you using a gateway or router of some kind? Is that configured properly?

Just recently started to notice the speed of my connection has greatly slowed down! I am on a desktop PC that is using a linksys wireless USB adapter to connect to my router. I looked at the speed and it was like 18mbps when it used to be like 54mbps. Now my laptop on the other hand if i have it right where i have the same desktop pc connects to the router and receives a speed of 54mbps. Whats going on here? why did my desktop pc suddenly get slower? Its prolly just a coincidence but right after I installed frostwire it seemed like thats when it got slower. (no frostwire isnt running and thats not why it seems like my connection is slower). But there isnt really a way that an application could cause my actual connection speed to slow down is there? The only thing that i can think of is that my linksys wireless usb adapter is going bad or something? does anyone have any ideas, or suggestions on what is going on here??

Before taking the major step of reinstalling your OS, try two things first:1. Delete and then re-install MSN Messenger (that will fix your corrupt file)2. I have a nearly fresh install of Win7 32 bit on a pretty modern machine. It has been intermittently laggy since I installed Win7 about three weeks ago.

Here is a list of symptoms:
1) Apps are slow to open
2) Double clicks aren't registered until 5-10 seconds later
3) Typing is slow on most apps, but only intermittently
4) Most Net browsing is very slow - not slow to load, but slow to react and slow to open new tabs & windows

System specs: quad core Pentium, NForce 750 mobo, Nvidia G9500GT card with 1GB, 4GB 800mhz RAM, cable internet and Buffalo router.

Any thoughts on where to start?

I don't think it's a system issue. Also, the Win7 install is super fresh. Further, it's the second install on the same machine (I thought I could fix the same issue with a fresh install). My experience index is 4.6 limited by the graphics card.

Answer:Slow to open apps, all Net apps slow, slow to type... laggy everything

OK so I isolated the following:

- Antivirus: I am running Panda Cloud, which is the same AV as on the PC upstairs
- RAM: checks out fine, 4 GB, same amount runs fine on the PC upstairs
- Vidcard: system performance seems OK if I do not switch between programs. That is, if I stay in one program for a while, the systems runs at an acceptable speed.
- Web browser: system lag is identical in Chrome, IE, and Firefox.

Answer:Not Again! Slow PC, Slow Start Up, Slow Outside of Internet

Hello justanotherguy,

You continue to get reinfected because you are still running unpatched XP.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from.

Only had this new pc a few weeks and it is so slow now after 3 blue screen of death crashes that caused this I think, I believe firefox caused. I am not sure how to read dump files to show you details of the BSOD. I am including details of my PC along with the hijack this log, my system is clean though according to antispyware and virus scans.

2GB DDRII RAM
VISTA ULTIMATE 32bit

I installed 64bit before this 32bit one on another partition of this HDD but cannot boot into it anymore at startup because this PC won't let me select it because it does not detect my keyboard in DOS mode for some weird reason.

Hijackthis log is attached file.

Answer:Snail Speed Pc At Times And Always Slow Internet Speed On Vista Ultimate

I found this helpful information on possible solutions, very familiar with errors on previous Microsoft operating systems. http://www.vandersluijs.nl/content/view/973/96/lang,enI uninstalled one of the suggested updates and so far it is fine, the update was only optional so no security threats. I think it has helped, not certain if it will be like a fresh install because windows is slower than it was two weeks ago. If 3 weeks is best windows can handle for being ready for a new install I may have to go back to Linux. I hope this thread can stay on this forum somewhere to help others follow the link I posted above for possible solutions to this problem, it will save them time and effort trying numerous things.

I work on my computer a lot, typically having a half dozen or more programs open at a time with mutliple documents in each. It is time to upgrade the hardware in my box. No games are played - but 3D drafting etc., Word, Excel, Outlook  . . .  are all open. I would ask for any input as to recommended motherboard/processor/memory/grapics card combo. I tend towrds Intel and Asus. Would a dual core processor be of significant advantage for the price? I would like to do this for under $700.00 or so. Maybe use my old card for a while if compatible with the new board?Currently use  a P4 266 with 2 gig RAM, Asus P4G8X and a 9500 Graphics card. If there is not a substantial improvement in performance (most all upgrades in the past have delivered marginal improvement only) it is not worth the huge amount of work of relaoding everything and I know my ghost image will be useless with the hardware changes.

Answer:Multi Tasking Hardware

What you have seems as if it should perform quite well.  What is the 3D drafting program?  AutoCAD, ProE, or?  I assume your hard drive is 7200rpm.  Games and parametric modeling take the most processing power.

Hi there
I think that even on a phone the whole idea of these metro apps might be getting "old fashioned" or like Dinosaur Technology now.
I've played around with a Windows phone - but what I really miss is the ability to do a bit of decent multi tasking -- I don't need MULTIPLE WINDOWS (unlike on a PC) but a decent bit of multi-tasking.

For example I could be replying to an email, meanwhile on the email I want to attach a document which before attaching I want to create or modify.

So I have to LEAVE the email app by saving the draft -- do the document modification, back to the email - reload it again from the drafts etc and attach the document.

Same if I am doing something and I get a messenger type call say on something like Ms LYNC.

Phones have enough power and memory to be able to decently multi-task applications -- and if a W8 phone which HAS a decent multi-tasking OS already could implement this it could be an "Android" killer as I can't see Android getting into any type of multi-tasking without a complete re-write top to bottom.

Internet pages can be saved I agree but that's not always the most convenient way to flip between applications.

So Ms -- some of the CPU's in these smart phones have more power than a lot of low end laptops -- so forget all this Metro junk and sort the OS out properly -- the W8 phones could be an absolute winner (and I LIKE my Galaxy IIIs phone but would get a decent W8 one in an instant if it had decent multi-taskin... Hey guys I would like to ask you whether wp 8.1 permits real multitasking like android.am having lumia 820 can I open more than 3 apps at a time.

Answer:Question about multi tasking

It does and it doesn't at the same time; when you open a second app the first one is left hanging up on background. You can open lots of apps, but almost all of them will just freeze on background until you bring them back. Almost all of them, 'cause WP8.1 allows apps to be suspended instead of closed when you hit the Back button (like Facebook and Calendar). Resuming a frozen app can be a very small issue on 512 mb devices, as heavier apps will display the ''resuming'' message when you get back to them. I don't think the L820 will get many of those messages.
you can however set which apps can run on background on multitasking - like Whatsapp, for example. Even if you close it or open another app, allowing it to run on background will not stop it from getting new messages. Check ''Battery Saver'' on app list or settings menu to configure background process

Hi,
I was messing around with Ubuntu lately, and there was one feature I liked very much. If you drag a program to one side, it wil automatically fill half of the screen. I know Windows 8 has this possibility with apps too, but because I rely heavily on desktop programs, I was wondering if this was also possible in Windows 8 without having to resize the programs manually.

Answer:Desktop multi-tasking

You should be able to just drag a window to the far right or left and it'll drop in and fill in half the screen.

It's not really so much of a glitch with the multi-tasking as it is with the GUI
Around 90% of the time after unlocking my laptop if I put my mouse in the top-left corner it shows the little doodley-doos representing open apps. But if I move the cursor down the multi-tasking bar doesn't come out and I have no idea which app I'm selecting
Come to think of it, the Start button on the desktop doesn't light up either, which makes it an issue with the whole left side of the screen
As a temporary cure, restarting my laptop clears it up, but as you might guess I'd rather not do that every time
Any tips?

I have just recently bought a new PC, Pentium 4, 200GB HD etc etc Running XP home. The problem I have is I like to listen to the radio (streaming) while doing other things on the computer, sometimes when I am down loading or surfing a web site. I get a lot of disturbance on the sound until the site is downloaded. The other thing is it is impossible to run Ad-Aware while the radio is playing the sound comes through like a tape playing at half speed.Could this be something to do with the power cord to the PC, I have the main power lead plugged into a multi socket on the last position, its the only thing I can think of.This never happened on my old PC.

Answer:Multi tasking is a problem

You could try upgrading your PSU to a higher wattage. Could also try upgrading the RAM to full capacity. Are you using on-board sound or is it a dedicated sound card in a PCI slot?

First I'd like to begin I'm sorry if I'm posting on the wrong forums.

I've had my computer for about 2 months now and everything is fine except for some reason I cannot multi-task, I can't play World of Warcraft, then alt + tab and watch a small little video or download a song or something. I'm pretty sure with the amount of money I spent on my computer I should be able to do this when I was able to do it with my old computer. All my specs from CPU-Z are:

Another thing is my computer takes a long time to boot, like 1 min to 2 mins long.

If anyone can help me I'll greatly apperciate it.

Thanks for your time

Answer:Multi-Tasking Problems.

i'm going to start off by telling you how to take a screenshot of a window: alt+print screen. it would have just been simpler to type the specs. sorry i can't even read the specs on this crappy monitor.

This is becoming increasingly frustrating. I have never had these problem with Windows 7 RC x64.

But, for some reason my recently installed Windows 7 x64 7600 has been freezing. Stays frozen for 20-25 minutes then makes a loud boop noise and unfreezes.

The programs I normally have running when this happens are utorrent, firefox, nod32, malwarebytes (active protection), itunes and maybe ps3 media server. I have different combination of these programs running and it still happens. I deleted some non essential programs hoping that would help.

I have done quite a few virus and malware scans and haven't found anything.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Answer:Pc keeps freezing when multi tasking. Need Help

It literally makes a noise? Can you tell whether it's coming from inside the case (which component?), or perhaps from the speakers?

HI,
I've been led to believe that the start up of windows 7 is much faster than other windows OS's, but I've not found it to be any quicker. It awakes from sleep faster, but if I shut it down and restart it it's no quicker, and might even be a touch slower. My wife has windows 7 at work and says it's like lightening starting up.

Is this because I upgraded to windows 7 with Dell, and if so would I be better installing it from scratch? Would I be able to do this with an upgrade CD, I pretty sure it gave me the option when installing?

I've seen on another thread to type is MSconfig and under the startup tab disable any unwanted programmes, but unfortunately I'm not that clued up on computers and so do not know what's needed and what isn't. Here's the list from my start up menu.

Microsoft security essentials
Quickset
Microsoft Windows operating system
Software manager
Adobe reader and acrobat manager
Adobe acrobat
Datasafe online
Dell webcam central
Dell support centre updates
HpwuSchd Application (Hewlett-Packard)
HpqSRmon Application (Hewlett-Packard)
iTunes
Default Manager
Cyberlink PowerDVD
QuickTime
Java(TM) Platform S

In layman's terms what does disabling these from the startup actually do? Does this mean I can't use these programmes, or that I have to manually start them?

Cheers

Answer:Slow Start up using Win7, how can I speed it up

By disabling the program you will just prevent it from being started every time you log in.

You should still be able to run these applications manually, (assuming that the program actually has a user interface, some will not as they are just assistant programs to speed up the use of their main programs).

A quick Google of the name you see in the list should give you enough information to decide if you wish to auto start the program or not

Computer was fine until I installed a new printer. Printer took over the internet and OneCare showed a pop-up "hp requires access to internet" every time I opened an internet window. I uninstalled printer, ran scandisk, defrag, spybot, OneCare for virus, and disk clean-up. I am not sure if all of this is interrelated. The fact my computer used to be fairly quick makes me think I messed something up or junk programs are interfering. Any clean-up help or troubleshooting is greatly appreciated. Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting up and I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs. If it does respond (such as clicking on internet explorer), upon closing out the program it will not respond again without a manual shut down.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal settings". Takes longer than it usually would.

#3 Shut down is slower or will freeze. All desktop items and desktop will be clear, leaving just background, as usual before a shut down, and will freeze leaving the arrow cursor still there. Sometimes it can get past this after a wait and get stuck on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen. And never shut down. This requires a manual shut down by pressing the PC's button.

Question: speed 256K

I need to buy a bundle package to save money on cable, phone and computer. I currently have standard residential DSL. The internet company states package with "intronet" at rates of 256K. I have no idea how fast that is but know it is less than cable. How would it however compare to DSL?

Hi all,

first off... thank you for taking out the time to help me.

Here's what's happening. I will be working away with my default programs open (Outlook 2013, Chrome and Windows Explorer) when all of a sudden I get a BSOD. This can happen while I am switching between applications, Scrolling up or down a window, watching a video file online....

I am at my wits end with my Laptop, here is what the issue is and what I have done.

Background on Laptop:
I have a HP Pavilion dv6 i7 and the following has been done to it in the last month.
1. The Cooling fan has been replaced
2. Hard Drive has been replaced
3. Motherboard has been replaced
4. A clean install of Windows has been done twice
5. All available Windows Updates have been installed
6. All drivers have been updated to the latest version
7. I have also uninstalled the Video Drivers, rebooted and done a reinstall

As per the instructions I am attaching the log files. Can someone please help me out with what to do next?

Thank you for your time!

Kind regards,
Jainesh.

Hmm, I've noticed with all the dump files the same time interval is 19 ticks which is interesting...

For 0x101 bugchecks I need Kernel Memory Dumps.

Follow these instructions on how to change to Kernel Memory Dumps.

Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

Once changed wait for another BSOD, then upload the new dump file to a file sharing website like OneDrive.
The new dump file will be located in C:/Windows/memory.dmp.

Don't zip it up as it corrupts the dump file by compressing it.

I’ve just upgraded to an Athlon XP2000 with 256mb, and done a clean install of XP onto a reformatted harddrive. The problem is, the system often (but not always) pauses for a few seconds when I try to open a new program or click the start button, and if I’m saving a file to disk everything else slows to a crawl (far more so than when I was running win98 with 128mb).Any suggestions as to likely suspects? Is there anything in XP that I can tweak or run to identify the problem? I’ve got Norton AV and Internet Security running in the background but that’s about it, although I’m also networked to a win98 machine that often isn’t turned on, if that makes a difference...thanks,stevejd

Hi,

I'm currently using Windows 7 RC1 (7100) and waiting for 22nd October
I did some test about multi-tasking in this build (7100) and after opened ~80 explorer windows - my windows couldn't open new windows it looks like a very big lag, explorer.exe in Windows Task Manager reach ~350MB RAM usage.
It looks very similiar to this video:

So I have a question to you - Did you observe the same results/behavior on yours machines? In RC or better RTM version of Windows 7?

Thanks,

So, anyone else disturbed by the changed gesture?
The presentation showed that swiping in from the left edge causes Task View to open. You then have to tap the tile of the app that you want to display on the screen.
That's a movement halfway across the screen and the need to tap a specific area. It has none of the advantages that edges gestures are supposed to have.
Imagine having a set of two or three active apps between you occasionally switch. It would be tedious in this system.
Compare that to the Windows 8 version:
- Slide from the left to open last opened app
- Slide from the left after a short delay to re-open the app that you just exchanged with the last opened app
- Slide multiple times in quick order from the left to cycle through all apps
- Slide from the left and back again to open the task view
It also allowed you to just slide an app out of the edge and include it in the snap view.
Why is Microsoft going back to a more cumbersome system? The multitasking gesture of Windows 8 was one of the undeniably awesome features. Even Apple users loved it.
I seriously hope that I just mis-interpreted the gesture in the presentation or something. Otherwise I can just hope that everyone will join me in voting on this change in the Insider app.

Answer:Multi-tasking touch gesture

I agree with the sentiment. I also prefer the multitasking gesture of windows 8 as more natural than the blend of windows 8 left swipe with win+ tab functionality. It literally seems like a compromise of both desktop and tablet gestures. But I don't think the compromise is a good choice in this matter. Honestly they should just make seperate versions for desktop and tablet. The fuss would be over and everybody would be happy.

Been running Win7 for 2 weeks or so now but didn't actually get into using is till a week ago, had to do some hardware upgrades.

My original sound (on board) was incompatible. Bought a $20 Diamond 5.1 XtremeSound card. No problems installing. Ran fine, sounded great.

Sound works fine, games, movies are good, iTunes, WMP.

Only issues im getting is during multitasking. Usually Firefox. When I'm browsing around, searching, anything really while playing music on iTunes the sound get very choppy and cracky and even worse on Youtube. Seems to be an issue with Firefox.

I've uninstalled k-lite and reinsalled it several times.. and checked the drivers on my sound card. Even configured ac3 filter and hooked up new cables. Same problem though.

Any ideas ?

I just built my first computer, (parts list: Newegg.com - Once You Know, You Newegg) and I'm running Win7 64 bit.

The system rating is around 7.5 - 7.8 (it's sitting at 1.0 because of Windows Aero or something being stuck at 1) the ram sits at about .9GB of the 8GB max, and the CPU averages at about 2% on most tasks. But the problem is whenever I install something, save something, anything almost it seems, the system chokes up. I can't do anything for more than 3 minutes and then it goes back to normal for a minute maybe. Needless to say this is very aggravating, as the purpose of the machine is gaming and more intensive operations, and the rate at which it's going it would probably take more than a month just to install all the games I have.

My first thought is maybe since I'm using a 1TB HDD for the OS and well everything, it might be slow trying to dig through the vast size of the HDD. But I've heard that it could also be the OS having some problem from the install (including but not limited to some registry error) or maybe even the HDD itself being bad, even though when it does work it seems to be fine (faster than my old HDD even).

I've gotten all the Windows Updates, and have updated the hardware drivers (via Catalyst Control, CD/Online updates). So I don't think that it's an issue with drivers/firmware.

Thanks in advance if anybody has suggestions/ideas.

Hi there!

First of all, congrats for this amazing forum, it helped me alot before!

Regarding my BSOD's, they have always happened but in a spontaneously way so I didn't care much, now whenever I try to play any kind of game, after 5 to 10 min I get BSOD! I formated the laptop from windows 8 to windows 7 and it still happens. It's still on warranty but I'm not very fond of not having my main computer for at least a month.

The details are on the attachment.

Thanks in advance for you amazing support,
Daniel Correia.

EDIT: When I had windows 8 the BSOD, name it got was WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, but it's now changed.

EDIT2: I've done several "fixes" regarding the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, to no avail.

Any question you need to clarify about my issue, I'll reply asap!

Hello ComputerUser201, Welcome to Seven Forums. I will try to help you with this. You have 2 Dump Files both dated 10/26 Both files show an 0X124 error, which is a generic hardware error but it gives no indication of what that hardware is. When you switched to Windows 7, did you download Windows 7 Drivers for the OS? The Windows 8 drivers won't work well in most cases. Please go to your Manufacturer's web site and download any updated drivers for Windows 7. Also, please go to device Manager and see if any have a yellow icon on them or a Grey exclamation mark on them. If you find one, those are the drivers you need to update, but update the Chipset drivers for sure.

After you have done that, make sure you have run and installed all Importany and Recommended Windows Updates. Install any you have, then after that is completed and you reboot, go back to Windows Update and click the button in the left column to check for new updates. Continue doing that until it says no new updates.

After updating your drivers and the Windows Updates, please open a elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. What we want are the results to say windows found no integrity viola... Read more

I am having trouble with getting different applications to play through different outputs. I have my speakers plugged into the back and my headset in the front, but I can't figure out how to get my music and game sound to play out of the speakers while keeping the chat audio from skype or teamspeak in the headset. I'm using the Realtek ACL892 8-channel High Def Audio CODEC that comes built in to the ASUS Sabortooth 990FX R2.0.

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Hello.  I am on a computer that is using Windows 7 Ultimate.  When I start up the computer it is very slow.  I tried to uninstall some unused programs from the computer and there is a program that I tried to uninstall that keeps reinstalling automatically called PC Fix Speed.

So far I have tried to restore the computer from a save point and it has not worked.  I am currently running a malwarebytes scan.

I am trying to fix this computer for my landlord so that he can use it as a HTPC in our living room.  Thanks for your help.

1..   Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

I installed Windows 10 but having a very low internet speed. Initially it turned out to be the windows updates but then after updating also the windows speed was very low. I installed glasswire to check by bandwidth usage and found that Windows background processes were taking up a bulk of my bandwidth, leaving me with nothing. I've been wanting to know for some time now, as What are the background processes? What processes do they constitute? Is this a virus? I scanned multiple times using Malwarebytes with no result. Can I firewall the background processes?

Greetings all,

I was recently asked by a friend to look at her office computer with a complaint that the system was sluggish (especially in regard to the Internet).

Following is a description of the machine:
Dell Studio XPS 7100 desktop
Six-core CPU running at 3.00 GHz
Six gigabytes of DDR3 10600 RAM

Started on system by cleaning it of dust bunnies (all vents were covered).
Checked performance through Task Manager and found the CPU running about 1% - 3% at rest. RAM usage was about 1.65 GB.
De-selected some non-essential startup items and got the base memory usage down to around 1.10 GB
I installed and ran CCleaner and removed 8.5 GB of clutter.
Malwarebytes found 19 PUP files.

Checked the Network settings and found that this particular system was configured with a wired connection as well as a wireless connection. The wired connection reports that it has a speed of 1 Gbps. The wireless indicates that it is connected at 54 Mbps.

There is an older Dell Optiplex 755 in this office running Windows 7 with only a wired Internet connection. This machine is a dual-core CPU equipped with 4 GB DDR2 667 MHz memory. As far as Internet speed, it is much faster than the better equipped XPS 7100.

Just wondering if it is possible that the XPS 7100 is using the wireless connection by default even though it also has a wired connection.
Thanks for your valuable input.

Answer:Slow Internet Speed

I forgot to mention that the Dell XPS 7100 is running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

I installed windows 7 a while ago, because i hated Vista.
I had some problems connecting, but i fixed those.
The only problem now, is that my internet is pretty slow.
I used to download my games from Steam with 2 Mbps, which is now 480kbps.
Youtube videos actaully take time to buffer, they didnt do that on my previous pc, which was a piece of junk compared to this one.
If you need any info on my pc, ask me.
Does anyone know how to solve this?

Answer:Slow internet speed.

Do you know for certain that it's not a problem with your ISP?

There is just a router.
The router connects through Ethernet.
I have 4GB of memory installed in my PC.

Sorry for the incomplete info.

Answer:Internet speed is slow

Hi

You haven't said how you connect to the internet.
Are you using dial-up or broadband? If broadband, is it DSL via cable or your telephone line?
What type of modem do you have? Is it a router or just a modem? Are you using a wireless connection?
How does your modem or router connect to your PC, via ethernet or USB?
How much memory do you have fitted in your PC?
If you could answer these questions it will help in trying to provide you with an answer to your problem.

Are you by chance using "homegroup" for networking in win 7? Homegroup sometimes on mixed networks causes slow downs and disconnects.

You can check it for yourself by setting up a new network connection using workgroup instead. If the problem goes away you can dis-able IPv6, and kill homegroup.
Let us know if you need help with this

I've been having this problem for a while now, ever since I started using Windows Vista I've had a low internet download speed (not the amount that I'm paying for). I know this isn't a problem with my ISP because on my other computer that has Windows XP, the internet connection is just fine.
I've tried the following tutorials:
Auto Tuning - TCP/IP receive level
QoS Bandwidth Reserve Limit
Neither of them have resolved my problem.
My download speed is the only problem, the upload speed is "normal".
I'm paying for 8Mbps but I get 0.5-2Mbps on my Vista system.
I have my modem directly connected to my computer, through one of the two Ethernet ports on my computer. This problem has been going on for months now and I'm really getting frustrated with it.

Morris, welcome to the Vista x64 Forums

I've been doing some reading about your issue. There is some discussion about potential solutions.

1. If you're running any AV software, disable it, specifically Norton or Symantec.

2. Depending on your adapter, you may have to either update to the newest driver, or roll back to an older version.

Check on these potential issues and let us know if either of them help your situation. If not, we can continue to examine the issue, just let us know what your AV software is and what kind of adapter and router you are using.

Answer:Slow Internet Speed

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
In your next post, please make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order:

CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Two XP PCs connected by NICs & Ethernet cables direct to to US Robotics ADSL 4-port router. All was well with a 2MB ADSL line via Plusnet. A few months ago speeds started to drop (from a usual 200kb/sec) to less than 50kb/sec. I amd now down to 20kb/sec almost all the time. This applies to both PCs.PLusnet have been useless with standard responses like "have you run anti-virus and anti-spyware checks (yes to both (McAfee, Adaware Plus Spybot S&D) - nothing) do you have any other internet applications running (no - have checked with Windows task manager), run the BT speedtest" - I can connect to the test site but CANNOT run the test(I have now tried on 6 seperate occasions at different times) the test response always is "Test error, system busy try again shortly but if problem persists raise with your service provider". It has got to the stage where I can only just connect to the internet. Latest router driver has been installed (no change) and all other drivers are up to date.Any clues please?

Answer:Very slow internet speed

This will bump you up if nothing else. How far are you from the exchange. I would say that the farther you are outside a 4km radius will result in gradual line loss esp. as more and more people take up BB. I dont know if BT provide such a service but you could contact them to run a test at your home. It could be that the exchange is getting over capacity. I'm sure some other members will have some suggestions.

I don't know much about networking, but can kind of understand the settings of a router. I have NETGEAR.
It all started when I was looking for a way of improving latency for my online games. I found that lowering MTU to 300-400 bytes (originally had 1500) would improve latency, but slow down internet speed (loading webpages). It didn't really work out for my game and i couldn't connect to my own router afterwards. However I reconnected to my router somehow and reseted the MTU back to 1500. I thought that resetting the MTU would make my connection go back to normal, but it didn't. I was stuck with slow speed, even tried resetting router to factory defaults. Now I don't know really what to do. Please help me!

Hey everyone,

My computer has been very slow with regards to internet download speed. I had this same problem when I went to a website on my laptop, then after I went to it, very very slow performance. I do have ESET Smart Security which did block an attack from that site and I have not found any viruses using the program. However, I did reimage my laptop and it runs normally now. The trouble is now my desktop computer is doing the same thing after I visited the same site on my desktop and its doing the same thing. I also am running ESET on this machine and it blocked all of the attacks, ect from the site. Now, my desktop internet is running very slow! So, what I did was I did a HiJack this search and I came up with this logfile:

Hey!

For the past 3 days I've been suffering with an unbelievable slow Internet Speed.

I know what is causing this; my father downloads on his PC which is in the room next to mine (We are on a Router) - I thought I had slightly fixed this by editing the values for the upload/download speeds on his and myselfs computer. He uses BitLord & BearShare.

Before Monday my Internet has been working fine, I'm an Online Gamer so it's hard to play games when you get a constant 1k - 4k ping and 2.0 - 6.0% packet loss because of this. It took me atleast 4 minutes to load up this website.

I'd appreciate any help on this matter, thanks!

My internet download speed was intermittently very slow..so I called the cable company (TimeWarner) and they sent a guy out. He replaced a splitter, cable, and the modem itself, and ran an internet speed test. It's marginally higher - but only 4.2mb on the Speakeasy test. He plugged his laptop in and got 6.5mb which is normal - they say you should get between 5.5 and 7 on RoadRunner. He didn't really know what else to suggest - we did the speed test on my computer in safe mode with no anti-virus or anything, and I have a gig of ram.

Does it make a difference that the ethernet cable goes right into a port on my motherboard, or should I buy a separate network card? I don’t know what else in my computer can slow down the connection. What should I look for in a network card? There's obviously 6.5mb fast internet coming into my apartment, I'm just not getting it into the computer. And I don't have any other networked devices.

Hi All,I use XP Pro,IE 6 With a broadband Internet connection via a Linksys router.I an connected via Newnet ISP.Up until recently this ISP has proved excellent.I am used to speeds at approx 6Mbps on a 8 Mbps promise.About 2 months ago things started to go wrong ,and speeds varied between 1to 3.5 Mbps Acting on the advice of Newnet I changed my Modem to this new Router.NO change.  After several further discussions and monitoring of speed at various times ,my ISP now informs me that this is a congestion issue at my local exchange,I am within 660 mts of it,and that nothing further can be done.          Does anyone know if any redress or explanation one may obtain at any GPO contact. My normal phone operator cannot help.                   Thank You.

Sure.Contact your provider and tell them their competition has offered the same plan for 20 Bucks a month cheaper and better consistency...That usually gets the ball rolling.

Hi,My internet has started to become very slow and downloads are slow as well, considerings its a 6Mb wireless connection. Before anyone might ask I have no viruses spyware or popups so no worries there. But because it is slow does anyone know of any suggestions that might optimize and speed it up a bit.For example downloads rang between 20 to 60 kbps thats on a 6MB connectionThanksBen

Answer:My internet is slow how can I speed it up?

As it is wireless (I presume you mean wireless to a router) then are you getting a good signal? Try it closer to the router if not.Have you set a network key to stop strangers connecting to it and using up your bandwidth? Finally, run a speed test click here and see what you get. Downloading files is a 2 way process. If the server you are downloading from is overloaded then you will only receive a slow download no matter how fast your actual connection is.

I started having the problem yesterday. I booted up my pc connected to the internet through wireless and tried to load up google, and it took like 20 seconds to load. I have Road runner high speed internet 30mb/s so it shouldn't take that long to load up google. Anyway i have tried to load other websites and the same thing, takes even longer. So i tried my wifes laptop (wireless) and it loads everything just fine. I even hooked up my ehternet cable to my pc and the load times are still slow. Tried Firefox, Chrome, and IE but still same problem. The weird thing too is when i run internet speed test on my dekstop ( the slow one) it still says my d/l speed is 25mb/s upload 1.6 mb/s and latency is 39 ms. My xbox still runs at same speed. Have also run Malaware to clean spyware, avast antivirus, and trend micro (online) antivirus, but nuthing. I don't know what else to do. I looked online but it seems like all the problems i have found like mine had no resolution. Its driving me crazy. I don't want to reformat, but i don't know what else to do.

Operating system: Windows 7 Home

The internet on my computer has never been that fast but I'm starting to notice that downloads are much to slow and web pages take much to long to load up.

My OS is Windows Millenium and I have a Rockwell 56K Modem. It seems to be running like a 28 K or even less most of the time!!

I've tried speeding it up through downloading Internet Accelerators but they all don't make a difference. Is there anything I can do manually in Windows myself?

I connect at 38667bps with my ISP and I know their connection speed is fairly fast cos my mates got them as their ISP to so I think its something with the computer!!

Why can't I access the net quicker??!!

Can you help!!

My internet speed has been pretty abysmal lately. I called up Comcast to see if the issue was on their end, and it wasn't. I ended up running Win7 in safemode + networking and it seemed to be just fine. I must have some kind of virus/malware. I'm running Malwarebytes and it's found two infected files thus far. Anything else I should do? Should I run hijackthis and get a log?

When it comes to networking and viruses, I'm practically illiterate for some reason.

.
that speed (115kbp's) is every day from 0-24h and its kind iritanting .

Is there any way to speed it up ?

Answer:My internet speed very slow , how to fix ?

What speed of internet are you paying for?

The 54Mbps would be Max LAN speed. Not WAN.

I just installed a Linksys WUSB54GSC Wireless adapter and am experiencing slow internet speeds. I ran a test at speedtest.net and was only getting 0.4 Mbps upload and download. I did the same test on another computer with wireless capabilities on the same internet connection and that computer was getting around 4.75 Mbps download and 1.25 Mbps upload. I've exhausted all the troubleshooting knowledge I have and really need some help figuring this out.

Answer:Slow Internet Speed

Hello dazsteeloman and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.Running video over an internet connection is mostly dependent on the connection speed. If you have a broadband connection then your ISP should be able to test the line for true speed. Running video over a dialup connection will definitely produce pausing for buffering. For help with internet applications I suggest posting in the Web Browsing forum here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/14/web-browsingemail-and-other-internet-applications/ . They might have some suggestions or tools to test the throughput of the connection.Cheers.OT
