Various symptoms and keeps getting worse

Question: Various symptoms and keeps getting worse

I have several issues and am completely perplexed and need direction and your expertise badly.

Vista Home premium, 64 bit....SP 2.
AVG ...detected nothing
MBAM..nothing
SuperAntiSpyware took an hour to removing 256 threats...usually takes 1-2 minutes.

Issues I am having.......
  * connecting to some/not all websites in IE.  Can connect to them in Google Chrome which I used out of desperation as I have it downloaded but never use it.

*occasional 502 errors when clicking on a topic

*back button is blocked by constant facebook/twitter plugin.

*Windows Mail was wiped clean, and can no longer connect to server.  Yet it left my contacts in Mail intact.

  * slow and at times nonresponsive to some websites, especially Yahoo.

I do have a clean laptop (which does receive my Windows Mail) for backup use and research.

My computer knowledge, well I can follow directions pretty well.

My Windows Mail I am not worried about at this point, am trying to work with Verizon to restore it, but wanted to list everything I could remember.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Various symptoms and keeps getting worse

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

FAIR:
After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
BAD:
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

Answer:HD/Filesystem prob:Went from fair to bad; then to worse, much worse

Test the HDD with the drive manufacturers disk tools (preferably using a different PC). Run the short and long tests. If either test fails or has errors, the drive is faulty.

I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

Thanks,
-X

Answer:My Computer - Getting Worse & Worse! Is there hope?

take the graphics card out and insert it back in firmly making sure it is sat properly in its slot. check the manufacturers websites for your motherboard and graphics card and see what the bios updates do, and see if they have any FAQ's to check if anyone else has been having similiar problems to you in terms of people who have the same motherboard or graphics card??

Email the manufacturer(s) for your motherboard company and graphics company.

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Jeremy

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

Initially it was Edge not working properly, now it mostly crashes. Even the new "amazing" feature of tab previews doesn't work properly. Imagine, I moved back to Chrome after so many years of being a happy IE user. Cortana was a bit iffy with "Hey Cortana". Now she doesn't listen to what I say at all, even when I press the button. The notification center has its own mood. Often decides to hide until I restart for absolutely no reason at all. Same goes for the sound volume and other flyouts on the desktop.
In short, there is massive degradation of various major features with every new build. And since I post all the issues I find using the feedback app, I know it is not just me experiencing these things. This is disastrous.
So, is it just me or you experience similar issues yourself?

Answer:Is it just me or does Windows 10 get worse and worse with every new build?

It's just you.

i've had verizondsl for about half a year or so now, and from last month to present, the connection has been horrible.. sometimes it would just hang for up to a minute at a time, with the modem activity light blinking slowly (loss of connectivity).. before it started, speeds were decent, and although slow compared to the optimum cable i was used to, it was sufficient. now it's just pure garbage. if it weren't for the fact that we're getting free cable, i would immediately switch to roadrunner

i figure asking you guys is probly much more helpful than those scripted outsourced fools at tech support. i tried all that "reset your modem" "unplug the ethernet cord" "make sure you're computer is on" crap already and would like some REAL answers..

PS- at my old house, we used to have verizon as well, and after a while it just stopped all of a sudden and when we called to see what happened, they said since there was construction in the area, they must have switched our phone line over to one with a further CO, and we were now too far to service. verizon is teh gay.

Answer:verizondsl getting worse and worse speeds

Well try plugging the modem into the demark jack if you have one (by where the phone line comes into your house). See if this still happensl. If it doesn't maybe something happened to your internal phone lines. (this probalby won't be the issue I'm betting).

Beyond doing that phone your ISP and get them to file a support ticket or whatever they call it there. When I was having trouble with my DSL connection a couple years ago I phoned up, they sent a guy from the telephone company to test the line and they replaced a device at the CO and the connection has been perfect ever since.

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

Question: Odd Symptoms

seems I come in here seasonally... but this is a new one to me. My computer has lately been lagging with 20% or below cpu usage, which I believe is supposed to be fairly good. No unusual quantities of processes running. I have also had a few other odd symptomsI use Open office as my office programs. When doing spreadsheets, it will quite often unmerge cells I had previously merged with no reason for doing so.On yahoo messenger, with 2 contacts they have suddenly been kicked off of yahoo and have difficulty logging back in. I'm not sure if this is related to any possible viruses or other problems on my end, but it sure seemed more than coincidental when 2 contacts experienced the same problem.I have run ad aware, and AVG spy ware removal and both have been coming back clean. ran my antivirus recently and also came back clean of anything other than negligible spy ware. not sure if I'm jumping the gun or anything, but here's an HJT log , hope I'm not wasting your time. Just for the record, a set of symptoms on a new machine
which stumped me over a period of months, none of them
occurring regularly enough to prevent use of the computer :
* bsods
* slow booting
* memory dumps - with mention of a different driver each
time
* refusal to boot, stopping at the bios screen or at a black
one with a cursor, requiring a hard reset
* the Windows flash screen showing extremely dimly while
booting very slowly - you could easily miss the "Windows"
text if not paying attention
* going away for a period of a minute or 2, not long after
booting to xp, - no activity, no response to mouse or cursor -
then working fine the rest of the day
* regular long wait while closing down at "Closing Windows"
stage
I did all the usual tests - as outlined by Julio.
The culprit ?
A hard disk, actually an Intel ssd. I replaced that and the
troubles stopped.
Until, ironically, I sat down to write this - when another
bsod occurred. Just hope that's an isolated case.

Answer:Odd set of symptoms

Attach that last BSOD minidump file. As for Intel SSDs, yeah, they had issues but from what I have been reading Intel was supposed to have fixed it.

Question: Various Symptoms

Hello BC!

I have been working with this user's computer for the last week.

It was just given to her by a family member and I have been updating and scanning it.

It is currently an XP SP2 but SP3 is currently installing.
The thing is though, that Spybot and MSE had found various infections (nothing major) and have seemingly removed them, but MSE service crashes on startup and MSE asks to restart it each time, Ad-Aware crashes whenever I try to open it the first time but works on the second time, and the computer locks up whenever I run GMER even in safe-mode.

I have DDS logs ready to be uploaded but just wanted to check here before doing so.

So what do you guys think?

symptoms
- net slows down dramatically after 5-10 minutes
- task manager won't open
- regedit won't open (when attempted to install recov console)
- cdrom no longer reads most discs, when it did before
- save to disk drop down menu freezes computer
- strange .exe's appearing in C: (mcsiwsx32.exe mostly)

what i've done
- installed new cd-drive (needed one anyway)
- used it to boot recovery and recovered 3 times
- scanned with Norton AV and AVG (Nothing)
- scanned with Spyware S&D
- fixed the Spyware S&D files except WildTangent (based on another forum's message)
- Installed SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster
- Updated Norton and AVG, scanned (still nothing)
- Started receiving smsse.exe messages at windows startup
- followed instructions at Symantec website for w32.Dalbug

and still no fix. I'm a moderate comp nerd, and usually these things i've done work just fine, minus the repeated recovering. I believe the worm is in the recov discs because everytime, it's back at full swing exactly as before, but i have no other copies of any OS.

I have Windows XP on a Dell Dimension. I have several symptoms going on and am not sure what the root of the problem is, if they are related or separate problems. The headaches started in June when Norton caught a Trojan and eliminated it, after which my AOL software would no longer run. When I started using Yahoo and Internet Explorer to access the Internet, I started getting inundated with spyware and adware, so I downloaded the programs I have seen recommended here: Spyware Blaster, AdAware SE, SpyBot, and MS Antispy. Running those I catch a lot of garbage. But now I experience the following problems:
--On startup, I get the error message: "Error loading DOCEOC16B1 Specified module could not be found.
--I have uninstalled then reinstalled AOL 9.0, and when I try to open it, it tells me it will download files that are needed. But when I click the "yes" button, it chugs for a while, then hangs up and tells me I have to restart to access AOL. AOL will not load though after the restart.
--I am unable to install Windows updates. I have a feeling that one of the antispyware programs is blocking the install, but can't figure out how to allow it!
--My system is running very slow, and occasionally programs such as MS Word will not open or they crash.

CAN YOU HELP?! I am so frustrated I am contemplating wiping the hard drive and starting over. Can that drastic move be avoided at this stage? What should I do?
Christine

So a friend of mine came over and asked me to help him figure out what is wrong with his computer.

It's got problems with programs like Microsoft Word automatically starting and trying to install, things like that.

Usually just hitting cancel on these applications will terminate the install and let him resume whatever he's doing. However, sometimes the computer persistently reinitializes the install and tries to get him to do the whole thing all over again. He's got problems with things like Word, MySpaceIM, etc.

I've run AdAware and McAfee so far. Currently his "Items Detected" has 4 hits, Joke-Bluescreen.c and RemAdm-PSKill. Do these symptoms sound like there's something malicious on the computer? Or is this a "setting" that has gone haywire? I'm not sure how to proceed once the scan finishes, but advice and pointers would be greatly appreciated. If you think it is indeed something malicious, I'll go through all the recommended steps and provide further input to the problem. I just didn't want to post everything only to have someone say "Just reboot and disable <insert option here>"

Thanks a ton for your help in advance. I've come to trust this website as a frontrunner for computer wisdom/insight, so here's hoping to another successful post! Thanks guys! :D

Question: Various Symptoms

Well... Since I installed SP1 (Win 7) last week I've been having some suspicious problems. It started with some unseen process sucking up the CPU so effectively that Clementine couldn't even play mp3's.

I ignored it at first but went to start another exercise in study hall and found that certain lower-case characters could not be used on either of my keyboards (wireless and laptop) and would change which letters every few minutes.

Now I am also getting several spyware browser objects detected by MSE, several scans in a row, but Ad-Aware and Spybot don't find anything.

Any ideas?

Answer:Various Symptoms

Sorry for the bump but I've got an update as well:The unseen process has seemingly stopped eating my CPU but I do notice that when I open taskman the CPU quickly drops from 100% to a normal amount. Also: I remember seeing an l4jdel.exe (the l could have been a 1) running on my system about a month ago that google did not recognize(Desktop or Web).Am I just being paranoid here? What could explain having these possible symptoms without it being obvious that the system is infected?I also decided to run MBAM... I'm having problems with my computer that I just put together. Earlier today, my computer was working fine. I had just installed windows vista and left for class. It's been about 3 hours and when I turn it on now, nothing shows up on the monitor. It's on but has a yellow light. I've tried replugging things. It just doesn't make sense.... Could this be a bad CPU?

Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario with 3 gig of RAM and a 160 gig hard drive. Windows XP, service pack 3. I'm using Symantec Corporate AV, updated daily, and Webroot Spysweeper, which updates automatically . I've recently also run Spybot S&D, as well as Ad-Aware just to see if Spysweeper was overlooking something. Maxthon was my preferred browser until it started crashing repeatedly, so I switched to IE 8. Outlook Express is my mail program.

A few months ago, I started having odd symptoms. I can't open more than 2 or 3 emails at a time. If I do, I get the out of memory error. And I can't open more than two or three tabs in Internet Explorer, or it will just sit there doing nothing. It doesn't seem to matter which program I try to open - Flashget, Quicken, Paint Shop Pro, etc., I'll get an error message. If I close either Outlook Express or IE, then I can open the other program with no problem. Also, when I open and close programs, it takes a good 15-30 seconds for programs to finish closing out and disappear from the taskbar.

So, here is my hijack log. I hope you can help me. Thanks!

I looked at task mgr and saw first this file name; ET1C6D.exe. I googled it and got nothing, then removed the .exe and got a single hit of a chinese based page with url's in it, one of which was to a health food site in Hong Kong. I translated the page and saved it to floppy and ran a scan on it, no virus, one instance of malware which a second scan didn't find again.
I went back to task mgr and now have VL49EE.exe. Also no google hits. 'end task' on both ended them apparently with no negative impact on the computer.
I've scanned my computer several times with no negative results, with Trend Micro fully updated, and with adawareSE and a2.
Any guesses?

My POST screen takes a bit longer than it did before. I took apart my whole computer and put it back and the problem resolved for a short while then came back. At it's peak it can take up to 15-20 minutes to POST. Now its only a few seconds longer than it should be.

Sometimes when the computer is starting up and getting into windows the computer makes a lot of clicking noises (normal loading sounds maybe) and then randomly BSOD or restarts. This doesn't happen all the time and seems to happen only when I leave the computer idle during start up.

When getting into windows my GPU fan runs at max speed, sometimes I have to go into the afterburner program to turn it back down. This is when windows is starting up, not even playing games.

Windows will tell me my computer is slow/low performance warning. This can't be right cause I'm not doing anything stressful (just surfing on chrome).

Q9450
6GB DDR2 ram (same brand pairs but different)
HD 6970
2 HDDs
720W PSU

I've tried resetting CMOS, ran memtest on my RAM. Not sure how I can test my CPU or MOBO. I did try a new PSU but didn't get rid of the slightly longer POST issue. What could be causing these issues?

Hi,

Can somebody tell me how can I detect if my HDD is going to die?

The drive isnt making any sound, nor is it slow and BIOS is detecting it.

But at times, PC just freezes and the hard drive indicator light is off. I have to hard boot the system then.

I am getting various BSoDs and the following Disk error was seen in the Event Viewer:

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

Following are the Stop Error Codes:
1.) 0X0000008E
2.) 0X000000C5
3.) 0X00000050

Any ideas, what these errors are indicating?

Regards,
Yossi

Our Internet connection (dual T1's) has all the sudden started acting slow. Our ISP told us that we are only using 2/3 of our connection bandwidth but our users experiance slowdowns while surfing the net. One minute you can refresh our ISP's webpage and it pops up instantly 2 minutes from then you could do it again and it would take 10-15 seconds. We think it could be the firewall, but we are not sure how to test and get accurate results by sticking a normal workstation outside of our firewall.

Anyone have any ideas how to do this or suggestions on what to do?

EDIT: I've done traceroutes to our ISP and everything is fine excecpt it acts really slow for routes behind our firewall. Is this normal? Pings to these machines are 1ms, but for some reason traceroute times out sometimes, why is this?

Answer:Here are the symptoms, anyone know the solution?

first things first, if you suspect teh firewall, simply elimiante it. get on the otherside and do bandwidth tests and watch your ping times, do the same analysis from inside the firewall and compare notes. use the speakyeasy speed test tools, set up several ftp tests, ping and trace rt tests both inside of nad outside the firewall, about an hour of testing should give you more than anough data to compare back and forth.

if the trace routes are timing out fror routs behind your firewall its a good hunch to suspect it. dont rule out routers, what network hard ware are you running, how many users and how much traffic are you routing?

as a rule of thumb try to make both machiens the exact same, and after your dont testing, assume the box outside the firewall has been comprimised and reimage it. its overkill, but falls under best practices.

Hi there,
I am doing my senior thesis project on MBR Malware Analysis, and I would love some of your input. I'm dealing with Alworo, Cidox, MaxSS (Olmasco), Sinowal, and TDL4. What symptoms have you experienced when infected? Anything that you guys have come across would be cool to know -- I'm kinda looking for different perspectives than what the anti-virus corporations report on them. Thanks!

Please, if the virus/malware you are experiencing has anything to do with following symptoms: slowed performance (standard), shutting down/disabling/hijacking browsers & ie security, issues with system32 folders and/or lrass, igxfers, svchost, or other processes you can't stop or delete. You may see a *.scr file in your system 32 folder. The registry may hide several problems; check your user account control settings for the roaming profile/environment. It may show you're running Windows NT when you aren't and have a lot of file sharing enabled.

PLEASE be careful about having your smartphones & other wireless devices around. There is a highly aggressive virus that hit Emory recently & is now making it's way to the general public. I know because I thought I was nuts...I didn't even know blackberries could get viruses. They can.

The virus somehow overwrites the firmware to access the internet connection, usually via hidden partition. You can't see the wifi working, but it is in the background. This infected my laptop (which had Norton on it, the virus hides itself and only Avast! caught a rootkit before it was shut down), broadband modem (yep.), blackberry, external harddrive, and then my new computer, which is currently being fixed. The laptop tech confirmed this is a nasty new strain. My new computer caught it because my infected blackberry was on for 5 minutes while it booted up for the first time. : (

Computer is going weird.
XP SP3
It boots up really slow, and when you do simple combo commands like clicking the two buttons of the mouse consecutively, it takes long for the computer to react.
When it starts up, I can hear the logon sound, but I can't play any sounds, it says that I have a hardware error in my sound card.

I also can't print- it says that the printer is not connected or that there is a hardware error.
When I try to maintain it, it says that defragmenting has been disabled.

I also can't edit the Registry because it says that I don't have admin privileges when my account has administrator privileges. I also can't do system restore because of not having admin privs. When I start up, I sometimes run EndItAll but Only Enditall is displayed on the window. When I go to the task manager "Tuneup Utilities", it doesn't list any programs or running files.

I just recently installed Garena client and Call of Duty 5: World at War patch 1.2. I also can't run the internet-a 3G modem which I reinstalled because the computer "cannot recognise the device" or it cannot connect. Up to now, it still can't connect and I am using a laptop with the same modem to type this. Help Please! T.T.....

Question: Multiple symptoms

I am running on windows XP service pack 3, and suddenly I'm getting pop ups with Firefox. When this happened, I ran Spybot and AVG scanners, found some problems, but when I clicked "Fix all problems", my computer crashed twice. Now, my automatic updates won't turn on and more importantly, when I close the lid on my laptop for it to go into hibernation, it powers itself on in five minutes, even with the lid closed.

Also, a few months before, both of my computers with Zonealarm were hit with some sort of virus...it wouldnt let me go online with Firefox, but it let me chat with people on AIM. I uninstalled Zonealarm and suddenly everything was better. This happened again a few more times with Windows Defender. Now, when I tried to reinstall Zonealarm, it does the same thing again.

Please help! Thank you!

Question: msas2009 Symptoms

Hi all,

I find myself in the unenviable position of having to try and fix a colleagues PC. We are a very small company, and the colleague in question is the Accountant so this is kinda serious. Today I established that SpyHunter and Avast! while they appeared to remove everything (and included a scan before boot), as soon as we reconnected to the internet the whole spoof virus thing started over. Its been a while since I needed to use HJT so I am the process of re-learning the procedure. Thats for tomorrow, for now I wanted to pass on a few of the symptoms because I wonder if they are typical of MSAS2009:

1. I could not perform system restore (always my first port of call).
2. I beleive that Windows firewall had been turned off by MSAS2009.
3. I could not use the Explorer option Tools>Folder Options, the menu item has disappeared, meaning of course that I can't easily see any of the system files.
4. Avast! had been disabled - I had to download and install the latest version via a flash drive.
5. From time to time Windows would display the message that it was going to shutdown because something had requested something to close, and this would occur in 45 seconds.. (I don't recall the exact dialog but I have seen it before occasionally if you Kill certain processes)

My impression was that MSAS2009 was nuisance rather than a damaging virus - but if the above symptoms are real maybe we have more than MSAS2009 on out hands?

Any ideas are more than welcom... Read more

First of all, I'm not very good with computers so please bear with me.

About a month ago, my PC restarted for no apparent reason. I then noticed that so many things have changed dramatically. There's too many to list, so I'll just mention the ones that stick out the most:

+ Appearance changed: it went back to windows classic (from the original Vista appearance). I was able to change it back to Vista.
+ Statup programs have all disappeared and won't come back. I tried so many times to have start-up programs reappear, but it just won't work. Now when I click the "start" button, the part where programs used to appear (google chrome, MS Word, Firefox...etc) is completely blank.
+ When I try to make certain changes, then won't take effect. Ex: open programs of the same type get grouped together and I don't like that. I went and unchecked that feature, clicked apply, nothing happens. It still groups them together.
+ Default programs changed: windows media player (WMP) used to be my default media player. Now, for videos, Divx is my default media player, iTunes player is my default MP3 player, and any other type that used to be assigned to WMP is now an unrecognizable file. I try to pick WMP as my default player several times, using various options, the change just won't take effect.
+ Recycle Bin is ALWAYS empty: if I delete a file, it won't go to the waste basket first; it gets automatically and permanently delet... Read more

Question: Strange Symptoms

Hi, I hope someone can help.
I have a compaq Presario CQ60 laptop running Vista service pack 2.
Following no particular activity it decided to do the following.
1. Will not run any security programs, including spybot, avg anti-virus, malwarebytes
2. Will not allow any access to networking options including the internet, wired or wireless.
3. Can't access regedit or services.msc.
There are no error messages being shown, just no response.
These symptoms only apply in normal log in.
If I log into safe mode I can run the programs, and access the internet.
Here is what I have tried so far. All in Safe mode because that is the only way I can run any of them.
Spybot S & D. Clean
Malware Bytes. Clean
AVG Anti Virus, via a boot disk. also clean.
I can access Task Manager and through that have looked at running services, and there is nothing untoward going on there.
I am fast running out of ideas.

Hey guys. Hope you're well.
I've had an issue with my laptop (XP) before where Active Desktop Comes up and won't go away. If I click "Restore my Active Desktop" an error window pops up saying:

An error has occurred in the script on this page.
Line: 65
Char: 1
Error: Object doesn't support this action
Code: 0
URL: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Marcus%20Evans/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?Click to expand...

Neither 'yes' or 'no' bring it back to normal.
I've had a very similar problem before where doing some malware removal fixed it.
Additionally I've also had some general computer slowdown and starting up takes an age. Another cause of these problems *could* have been putting my 3D card in the oven at 190oC a couple weeks ago (to reset the solder as a loose connection had formed and I had a blank screen all the time). I don't think that's it though (just thought it'd be good to note) and running the scans you reccommend brings up some results. I took the time to have a nice computer clean-up before doing these too which might help.
Thanks!
Marcus

Answer:Several Minor Symptoms

I am not finding any malware in your logs. I suggest you pursue this in the software forum.

Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Greetings.

Slightly vague problem I'm afraid. I've noticed my computer behaving slightly strangely from time to time - a bit slowly, certain internet banking sites don't function properly, my anti virus won't run automatic scans even though I have set it to do so. One scan a few weeks ago said there was a trojan which it couldn't heal, but ever since then it hasn't shown up on future scans.

If it was one problem, I'd probably ignore it but added together I'm a bit suspicious.

If possible, I'd love some assistance from the knowledgeable people out there to see if there is anything malicious at work on my pc.

PC is running Windows XP.

Thanks!

For the last week or so I have been having several problems with my computer. Number one, my computer will not shut down correctly. Even though I have closed my browser, each program (like messenger or any group that i have visited) will ask if I want to end the program. Last night I closed everything out separately, and when it got to just my desktop it still wouldn't shut down. I had to turn it off with the power button.

Second, when I first turn the computer on it works fine. But after I'm on it for awhile, it gets slower and slower, and finally begins to hang. If I restart it will work fine again, for awhile. I used to leave it on all the time, but now I shut it down when I won't be using it for a few hours.

I have run Adaware, Microsoft antispy, AVG antivirus, etc. No virus is found, and I've cleaned any spyware found, which was only cookies and the like. The only change that I've made recently is that I added a wireless keyboard and mouse. Had trouble with that for a couple days, but it seems OK now. Also downloaded "Tweaknow RegClean" a couple weeks ago and used it, but when this trouble started, I did a restore on what I had removed with it. Thought that was the problem, but no change since the restore.

I'm using XP Home SP2.

Answer:Several symptoms, one problem?

just yo give it a try: go back to the old keyboard and mouse for as long as the test lasts (until you see no difference when changing them).

If it's not software related: could be a faulty hard drive, a temperature issue. Check system and CPU temperature, download and install speedfan at:

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

as it will show everything related to system and CPU and hdd: temp, fan speeds, smart status, etc

by the way, posting a Hijacklog is not a bad idea, so we can take a closer look at your settings and startup items

Hi, my computer has been acting strange as in, one of my keys type by its self, also I've noticed DDoS attacks coming from my own computer, am I infected?

Answer:Possible Malware Symptoms

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Hello, I have been experiencing following (rather frustrating) problems:

1.My Windows XP SP2 crashes quite often. Each time I format my C: (Windows installation drive) and install a fresh copy.

2.If I boot my computer using Windows 98 boot floppy, and try "fdisk" command, I get a blank screen after I answer the question there "Do you wish to enable large disk support for your computer?". Any answer (yes or no) to this question gives the same result, I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor, nothing happens and I have to restart my computer. As a result, I can't delete and create new partitions on hard drive. I have done it quite a few times before successfully and familiar with fdisk in ms-dos.

3.I tried doing the same (changing partition layout) using Fedora core 5 installation CD. I got message which meant the linux installer program could not read the hard disk layout and to continue I would have to format ALL hard disk. I didn't continue and I quit. I tried doing this several times with no success.

3.Unable to delete and recreate partitions, I simply formatted my C: from using Windows 98 bootable floppy and then installed fresh copy of MS Windows XP SP2. After the installation is complete, I can boot the computer in windows now. But I cannot install many softwares, since their installers report error on launching. This includes installers for Adobe acrobat reader, COMODO firewall, dot net 2.0, Gtalk, MS Office XP. I managed to install F... Read more

Hi ameydeshpande and welcome to TSF !

Nothing obvious in your HJT logs. If you ever believe you have gotten some infection, we have a dedicated HJT section and some preliminary steps. We don't allow regular users to answer HJT logs anymore : http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ou-191670.html

To me your symptoms are more like some hardware issue, how old is your computer ? Please follow the posting system specs link in my sig and provide us with your complete specs. Don't forget the brand and model of your power supply (open the computer case and look at the sticker that's on the side of the power supply block).

Find the brand and model of your hard drive : go to start => run and type devmgmt.msc. Expand disk drives and tell us about the model ID you see there. Then create the related manufacturer's diagnostic utility boot floppy or CD, boot the computer on it and run the long/extended test on your hard drive. Report if it finds errors.

XP uses the NTFS file system which is more efficient than FAT32 for large drives. If you've formated your drive in NTFS then few Linux distro will allow you to repartition it (NTFS is usually not supported by Linux) and I'm not sure fdisk will allow you to do so. You should use the XP install CD to create your partition layout. It's possible that the MBR or file system was corrupted during one of the operations you did on the hard drive. After you've run the manufacturer's diagnostic tool on the drive boot in Windows and run... Read more

Question: Virus Symptoms?

I am helping a neighbor with his computer's slowing down. I turned off a lot of programs in msconfig and I ran Spybot and Ad Aware removing 20 or so pieces of spyware. I also removed Norton Antivirus and installed AVG. All of a sudden things will slow to an absolute crawl and/or the computer will freeze. I can see the HD activity light going on, hear the HD and it is using 100% processing power in the task manager. No virus shows up either in AVG or an online check with Trend Micro. I suspect someone has taken control of his computer which is always on and on broadband. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Len

first off, clean up the junk and clutter on the system as a first step....download and install Cleanup! ..It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders (a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space.Check 'options' to customize your settings, and then make sure only the following are checked: 1. Cleanup all user profiles 2. Delete prefetch files 3. Empty the recycle bins. When Cleanup! is finished, it will ask you if want to log off and reboot. Answer NOFurther info, read the BP Cleanup! Tutorial

1) When trying to run the MaCafee removal tool (MCPR.exe), I get the message: "MCPR.exe is not a valid Win32 application". I have been told on another forum that this is most certainly caused by a hijack program.

2) When clicking on some websites' hyperlinks, I get the message: "Cannot load page".

3) When on my on-line banking site, when I click on the option to go to the on-line bill pay site, I get the message: "Cannot load page" and get the error number 403.

I am aware that these problems may or may not have the same cause.

Hello.

I'm helping a friend whose computer was infected with spyware. Apparently, his CounterSpy installation had not been updated or set to scan! He ran CounterSpy and found and removed 14 cookies, including some tracking cookies. Also I ran Symantec AntiVirus, which came up clean.

However, some spyware symptoms still show up occasionally. For example, when clicking on a Google search result, Google took me to the result page, but then jumped to the CitySearch site. It's not consistent, but it does occur.

I ran another CounterSpy scan which found/deleted 13-14 tracking cookies.

Here's the HiJackThis log. Any help appreciated!

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the ro... Read more

Hello, let me tell you the tale of my computer and hopefully someone can help me out...

2 years ago(about) I bought the components to make a computer... KT7A-RAID 1200Mhz Athalon motherboard/processor, WinFast GeForce2 Pro 64meg, Montego II Quadzilla soundcard, A generic 56k Modem, a 10/100 Linksys Lan Card, and a Memorex 52x cd-rom, with a western digital 30gig hdd. I used the ME opperating system.

When I first put it together, I had to reformat the hard drive many times due to unexplained crashes and freezes, I took the hdd back to the store and it was replaced due to being broken.

The computer ran fine for awhile, but it would always freeze while playing mp3's with kazaa/windows media player. But this didn't really bother me much because I use the computer mostly for games which it would run fine.

Recently, my computer began crashing in odd ways. Sometimes when I would click desktop icons(and sometimes for no reason) the screen would flicker and distortion would cover portions of the screen, and I would be unable to do anything except (sometimes) move the mouse, which would cause more flickering and result in freezing. The computer also began to shut down for no apparent reason, sometimes just restarting(I have checked all the power cords, they are all tight). The computer also freezes often, especially when connecting to my dail-up internet, or trying to cancel while its dailing. It freezes a lot while using kazaa as well.

I opened my computer up and found ... Read more

Here's the skinny...I downloaded PokerStars a few days ago and strange things started to happen. Firstly, my keyboard has begun only working intermittently. It's a Microsoft wireless keyboard that I have checked on another computer to make sure it's working properly (and it is). These symptoms generally go away if I reboot, but re-appear later. Secondly, as I was powering down last night, I got a popup window named "Firebird Server" and said I had two active connections. Also, the other night, my computer lost all file associations and told me that several classes were unregistered (I got the unregistered classes error when I would click a program). I know that there's something going on, but I'm not sure what. I ran HijackThis, and I don't see anything obvious but I figured maybe someone here might see something that I'm missing.

+ Recycle Bin is ALWAYS empty: if I delete a file, it won't go to the waste basket first; it gets automatically and permanently deleted from my PC.

I'm sure there are more iss... Read more

Hi all, new here, I am having a few glitches every now and then. Have done searches etc. I am running windows xp sp2, have avast and ewido installed, use zonelabs firewall.

Symptoms include: left mouse button not working (rare), computer resets occasionally (sometimes when first turning on computer it will shut down/reset b4 getting to xp screen) and sometimes Zone Alarm will not start, various error messages (vsmon.exe/truevector...).

I've done searches and have downloaded SMITfraudFix but not sure exactly how to use it.

- Windows automatic updates will not start nor will it stay enabled once the window closes
- iexplore.exe and multiple instances of rundll32.exe found in task manager
-Kaspersky scans hang and end after scanning 1% (though scanning only critical errors completes, but nothing is found)

I read the "5 steps before posting" and did the steps I could, but the panda plug-in (active 2.0) won't completely download (just says error, try again, which I've done several times), and dss shuts down during cleaning temp files and pops up with a "notify microsoft about this error" message, so I have no logs to post right now.

I'm running Windows XP (sp2), and my primary browser is Firefox though I do have IE installed, too.

I'd be very grateful for any help.

Jennifer

I tried to find where to go in and edit or delete the op, but either the option isn't there, or I just missed it.

I ended up using this as a prime opportunity to convince my husband that this was an omen we should get a new computer which he agreed to, so I ended up just wiping the old one and reinstalling the basics to have it for a backup.

I'm trying to help a neighbor lady who has just begun to have problems with her machine (HP, running WinME). What has happened and what I have observed...
her son worked on the machine last weekend; he cleaned up "some things"; he tried to install Nav2002 (on top of Nav2001); the install did not complete; there was no uninstall for Nav in Add/Remove Programs
I researched here and found links to Norton's removal tool, "RNav2003"; I d/l'd it, ran it on the machine to delete Nav2002; it produced a big log with a lot of removal activity; at the time I was unaware she had previously had Nav2001 so I did not try to remove it
with everything appearing to have been cleaned I installed Nav2002 again; the installation started and the progress bar came up, but very quickly it went away; there was no error message or completion message; there was, again, no Nav option in Add/Remove Programs; I found many Symantec entries using Regedit
I decided to "Scanreg/Restore" the registry to the day before her son started working on the machine; when this completed there was an uninstall option for Nav2001; I tried... it failed... probably because I had followed the RNav instructions for removing all the Symantec/Nav directories when I ran RNav the first time
I tried to run RNav again (this time using the Nav2001 option); it created a blank log file and VANISHED - the RNav program disappeared AND THE EXECUTABLE ITSELF DISAPPEARED... GONE !!!

Been trying to solve a non-booting system issue. The only thing I haven't replaced is the RAM. One thing I've noticed is that the hard drive won't spin up when connected with an IDE cable to the MOBO, but will when hooked up only to power. Is RAM required to boot newer Motherboards? I know my old PII MOBO can get to bios without RAM but I'm not sure about a P4 Board. Is RAM a potential reason for not being able to get to BIOS? After reading a few archives, I realized I had random restarts with quick blue-screens for some time on the board I replaced, and the old RAM is the only component I haven't replaced which makes it suspect in my mind...

My deskop computer is having some trouble. It's having some strange symptoms, and does one of four things whenever I start it.

1) The screen stays blank. I've had this problem before and had to replace the motherboard. The motherboard I have now is about 2-3 months old.

2) After the motherboard logo appears, rather than loading the setup, the screen stays blank other than a blinking underscore at the top left corner of the screen.

3) The setup begins to load, but gets stuck on "Verifying DMI pool data........."

4) The computer performs the setup, but right before windows loads, the bluse screen appears.

If I leave the computer on for long periods of time, I have no problems with it, and the problems very rarely happen when I restart it. They only seem to happen when I power on the computer after it has been completely turned off. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!

Answer:Having Some Strange Symptoms

It sounds like a weak power supply possibly complicated by dirt on fans in the computer, it's that cold startup which requires more power or amperage to get everything running. You can try cleaning the inside of the computer, another remedy(temporary) is start the computer and as soon as it stalls, hit the reboot button if you have one or hold in the power button to shut down and then restart right away.

I had the same problem when the room is too cold.

My mouse freezes often (permanently. I have to pull it out and plug it back in for it to work. It will freeze again in a couple of minutes.)

I had Think-Adz (or I still do, I don't know for sure). I used to get these pop-ups when using IE. They don't come when I use Firefox / Opera.

I looked at my HiJackThis Log and found WinAntiVirus, WinAntiSpyware, and SystemDoctor in my trusted zone. I'm freaking out.

I use AVG antivirus and Ad Aware SE frequently. I installed ZoneAlarm yesterday.

Answer:Need help now! symptoms inside...

First off please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized .

Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of the main.txt back to the forum.

Please do the same with extra.txt .

=========

What DSS will do:
1: Creat a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
2: Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
3: Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for the analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Hello. I'm having an issue with my Zotac AMP! GeForce GTX 550 Ti where it seems to be overheating at a low temperature. While playing Skyrim (low or high settings), at some point my sound will become very tinny and the game will drop to under 2 FPS about every 30 seconds. Most recently, Windows Aero disabled itself without an error message of any kind. After much frustration, I discovered that this only occurred when my GPU reached 50? and above.

To me, this seems odd because I thought cards could perform at temperatures well over 70?. I'm also confused as to why this would even be affecting my sound at all. I've disabled all HD audio devices with NVIDIA drivers to use my Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme with drivers from Creative. I should mention that in order to get my GPU fan running at an appropriate speed, I have to manually set it to 100% with Zotac's OC utility FireStorm. I recently added three 120mm fans to my case. Does anyone know what could be wrong here?

Hello to all,
This situation has been discussed in other threads that were started on a different subject. So I though I would ask it here on it's on, with the limited experience and knowledge to answer myself.
The situation is a follows:
When first installing windows 7 I got it running and for my preference I put Zonealarm Free Firewall. On reviewing devices and printers it showed a yellow triangle on the, then only, hardrive (SATA WD Caviar) I had and on the USB device. I checked the driver details on both devices and found that the options to update driver, rollback driver and uninstall driver were grayed out and unavailbale for use. Only view Installed Driver was functioning.
I learned that Zonealarm blocks some port to the web that W7 requires. I uninstalled Zonealarm and the above devices immediately lost their error yellow triangle and worked properly.
Why is this and what exactly is causing it? It is apparently part of the OS and my last computer ran XP Pro so I never encountered this type of problem before. Why and what are blocking the other options.
Can any learned person explain in moderate or simple detail what is occurring or point me to a Tutorial.
Thanks
glennc

Hello Techsupportforum,

The following log is in regards to a post I made in the windows help forum: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f284...xp-179745.html

I've followed the 5-steps so far and I'm not sure if I'm breaking the "only post in one thread" rule by following the "only post hijackthis logs in the hijackthis forum" rule :). My apologies if I am.

Here is a breif re-cap of the problems I'm experiencing:
1. When opening a folder, the system freezes for 15 seconds, then it is fine. Programs do not seem to have this problem, just folder windows.
2. XP's built-in .zip viewer tool doesn't work. I see an hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing happens.
3. Cannot use the Run or Internet buttons on the start menu. Instead, I get the message: "Cannot create shortcut here. Would you like to create a shortcut on the desktop".

Thanks for any help! This problem has really bee frustrating me.

Here's the Hijack this log. Extra.txt is attached.

Hi,
I have windows XP pro, with all the latest security updates and service packs. I have a 1200 mhz processor, 20gb HD with over half free, and 256 DDR RAM. have a 2mb broadband cable internet connection.

Now, for quite a while now, my computer has started to have weird problems. After initial boot, once the computer is fully loaded and running, the PC will either shutdown, go into standby or just restart. No warning, it just does it. Then I have to fight with the computer for another 2-3 attempts with its sudden shutting off and me then restarting it, until i get in. Once its up, it then stays up.

Also. my internet connection seems to drift from full speed, to very slow speed (should be 240kbps but sometimes as little as 1-40 even on known high speed sites) to just not working or connecting at all.

Ive heard of a virus called w32.welchia.worm. It causes the computer to have these symptoms.

So far I have:
Downloaded and installed all microsoft security updates and service packs
Run three anti-virus programs on it
Used 'Easycleaner'
Used a symantic welchia worm removal tool. It said it could not detect it on my computer.

And yet I still have these same symptoms. Any ideas guys? I really dont want to keep fighting the computer to log on like this, it cant be good for the computer!!??

Help! my computer is doin almost every thing they are saying is related to the blaster virus yet every virus scan I have ran doesnt find it .. I am getting error messages right and left my computer is shuting down on its own in the middle of things the list goes on.. any suggestions..

Answer:Blaster symptoms

Are the virus scans you are using up to date on virus definitions? Have you tried an online scan? If not, TrendMicro's HouseCall is a good one to use.

In the past 48 hours there has been several new viruses hitting the internet and you may have pick up one. Updated scans are important now.

The first thing I noticed this morning was that my computer wasn't playing any noises (Windows' login jingle). Then that it seemed to be taking longer than normal to login. Then the taskbar was missing, all of my desktop icons rearranged. Internet Explorer doesn't run, as far as I can tell Norton isn't running (can't see anything in the task manager anyway). System Restore points show an error, Copy-Paste won't copy from one program to another, MSN Explorer is the only working browser, and then several links/buttons aren't working (seemingly all the Javascript ones?). Probably other things I've forgotten about.

I've tried the Stinger free scan on active processes, boot sector and WINDOWS folder, showed nothing. Used a shareware Hidden Process Finder which showed no difference from the Task Manager's list, googled several of the less familiar processes and killed any that weren't critical, no change. Tried IEReg.bat, with no change. Ran XP's System File Checker, showed nothing. Tried starting XP with a 'clean boot', same symptoms. Even running in Safe Mode there is no difference, I still have no taskbar, no IE, and no anti-virus.

Luckily I can still use this other PC, and can still access the Internet on the infected PC, only through MSN Explorer. I'll try work out how to post a HijackThis log when the Copy-Paste isn't working.

Any help much appreciated.

1. Nothing happens when you punch the on/off button on the front of the PC with the power cord plugged into a wall outlet.

2. When plugging in the power cord to the wall outlet the PSU fan starts for about 2 seconds, then shuts down.

Could this be a PSU problem or a short somewhere else? How do I trouble shoot this?

Answer:Are these 2 symptoms of a PSU failure?

It could be a PSU problem, its were I'd start. But it really could be anything, a bad motherboard, dead processor, bad(or stuck) power or reset switch, a damaged drive or PCI card, etc.

Hi, I hope I'm posting in the right place, I haven't seen this issue posted anywhere and I hope I have all the information you'll need to help me out. I'm running a Dell Dimension 3000 2.8 GhZ with 512 MB of RAM with WinXP Pro SP1 fully updated (I don't like SP2). I use AVG as my anti virus software and Zone Alarm Firewall. I run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Blaster and even MS Anti-Spyware Beta1 just for the hell of it. If I left any necessary information please let me know. Ok, here is my problem: When I run Spyware Doctor it finds CWS.Home Search Assistant, but cannot remove it, which I understand is part of the difficulty with HSA but what I find odd is that I am not suffering from any obvious signs of an infection, no loss of preformance that I have noticed or anything like that. It seems to me to be sitting in the background but not doing anything, is that even possible? So my problem is that I cannot follow removal instructions I keep finding on the net because all solutions are based on people who are suffering from obvious signs of an infection, like a brower Hijacking for example. Here is what Hijack this found, I hope someone can help me and I'm sorry for the long winded post I just wanted to give as much info as I had. Hopefully I've got all your instructions right in my first post to BC Forums.

I've been helping my neighbour with a Malware attack on his computer using your Instructions. His system runs WindowsXP Home and he uses IE as his browser (I have recommended that he change it to Firefox as it closely resembles IE and he doesn't need to try to get his head around Opera or Chrome - he's almost 80 and doesn't need this hassle).

I found that the icon (an "A" icon in the tray) generating a number of alert pop-up messages such as "Antivirus Software Alert", "Windows Security Alert", "Security Warning" etc was Antivirus.net. A Google search on my computer soon identified this in your website as Malware.

We tried running MBAM that was installed on his computer but it wouldn't open. Then I found that he didn't have an active antivirus program although his system indicated he had Trend Antivirus, but it turned out to be a trial version that had expired. I downloaded Avast free edition onto a flash drive and installed it for him - it found a number of problems both through a post installation scan and then in a bootscan on restart. Still no MBAM after this and pop-up alerts still occurred.

I am dealing with this from my computer because I found that his cannot access browsers (other than the Malware Antivirusalthough its still seems to download them (eg Windows updates).

I uninstalled the non-operating Trend Antivir... Read more

Thanks to everyone for the posts and help with these symptoms.  I had ALL of the following on my machine:1) Weird sounds playing from ads, without me even on the internet2) Internet browser windows linking to inexplicable pages, unprompted by anything3) Extreme Slowness4) On reboot Windows would often freeze up on the Windows XP or Welcome screen.5) "Antivirus 2009" garbage6) All helpful antispyware software blocked from downloading, updating, installing, etc.7) Websites such as microsoft.com and avg.com won't load. System Restore capabilities were impacted and lost.  With extreme patience, a different internet connection, a zip drive, and lots of luck I was able to walk through the "Malware Removal Guide".  Step "A" was the hardest - I needed to manually update my existing AVG, scan & remove, then uninstall.  I then had luck with the Avast! but only after the AVG quarantined some things and was uninstalled - I could tell it was not working properly.    Then after the Avast! software scanned and did its thing, CCleaner and SAS worked.  Then MBAM would work after the SAS scan.  After completing the steps (IN ORDER ONLY) my machine seems to be running normally, but I wanted to post my logs for the experts to be sure to catch anything that is still hanging.  I'd guess with these viruses I'm not out of the woods yet even with no visible symptoms right now.  Thanks to the pros for yo... Why do you suspect the processor ? ?Without an identical machine to test it on it is difficult to diagnose conclusively whether it is the processor at fault or other components...However with a flowchart approach which we use here quite often we can at least narrow it down until a culprit is found.Start by posting as much info on the system, OS what happened prior to this etc and we can go from there.List all the symptoms as well in the order they started occuring.

Hi,

First, my thanks to the people who run this site, There have been several instances where I have been walked through a malware removal by an analyst in the malware removal forum and can honestly say the work you guys do for free is astounding!!
The person who helped me noted that the Windows management instruction on my computer is faulty somehow- he didnt go into detail but directed me here instead. I profess I dont know what WMI actually does but I guess it is important to get it fixed!
I have noted recently some odd behavior on my machine, I dont know if it is relevant or not. Whenever I check for updates to windows from the control panel, it says an error occured whilst checking for updates; error code 80070005.

Also, I find I cannot change my desktop wallpaper! I navigate to a picture on my hard drive, open it in windows picture viewer, right click, select set as wallpaper and an error message, 'this picture cannot be set as wallpaper, an internal error occured'. This happens with all the pictures on my computer.

So if anyone can help me at all I would greatly appreciate it! I have included below a DDS log and a netstart.txt file generated through cmd prompt: I believe it was these two logs that alerted the analyst on the malware forum to the problem.

So in January, I had to reinstall my whole Windows 8.1 laptop, and after the reinstallation, my favorite websites came back without me restoring them, but I had to reinstall Google Chrome, but Google Chrome had the YouTube options add on still without me installing that add on again. I have a HP Pavilion 15 laptop.

Now, sometimes when I type, some words disappear, and sometimes the tabs in the browsers close by themselves or a new tab gets open without me opening any tab.

What is happening to my computer? Am I being hacked, or is there a virus? Malwarebytes and ZoneAlarm didn't find anything, but AdwareCleaner found a program. But I wonder that if some bad programs are masked and they pretend to be good or normal programs. Is that possible? The hackers' ideas never end though.

Answer:Weird symptoms in my PC

Lets get a deeper look. Please follow this Preparation Guide, do steps 6,7 and 8 and post in a new topic.Let me know if all went well.

Question: Spyware symptoms?

My home page keeps going to blank, or to Web Search. Also, 4 links have been added to my favorites list, including 2 sex sites and a shopping link. Is this actual spyware, hijacker or what? There are so many downloads offered to help with these problems, and so many different opinions on which are best and actually necessary to solve the problem. It only happens on IE, I have recently installed Mozilla Foxfire and doesn't seem to have affected it, YET anyway. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Answer:Spyware symptoms?

That definetely sounds like spyware. I had this coolwebWWWsearch worm infecting my computer again and again, hijacking my home page, i used to get rid of it today only to find out that there it was the following day, until i installed ad-aware from lavasoft and set the ad watch service to stop any page with that name installing on my computer, i haven't had any problem with that particular spyware anymore and i haven't had any indesirable web page taking over my computer.
Why not try to disable the system restore. Altough you will lose your system retore points you will gain on the log run because spyware hide at the system restore to avoid being detected. Then you can run Spybot search and destroy, ad aware lavasoft and your antivirus, this will help you a lot even if you don't have ani viruses on your computer. By the way, these anty spyware companies can create restore points.
Merry Christmas and good luck.

One of the steps in Major Attitude's Post above says that you only do a certain step if you have "about:blank or home search hijack". How do you know if this is one of your problems. What are their symptoms?

Thanks

Answer:What are the symptoms of these 2 BUGS?

The about:blank hijacker changes Internet Explorers homepage to a 'about:blank', This is not a real blank page, but pointing to some commercial site or search engine site. As of right now there are 8 variants of this hijacker. Some can be difficult to remove.

The home search hijacker changes your Internet Explorer homepage similiar to this "res://.dll/index.html#37049" It also adds specific Words on webpages link to search pages.

Both of these hijackers are very bad and need to be removed asap if infected.

If you think your infected please see this sticky thread When all else fails - Generic Solution to HSA (Only the Best) & About:Blank hijack

Hello,

1. If a computer is getting ready to overheat and cause permanant damage...how could I tell? I have a program to monitor my temps/fan rpms already.

2. If it does "overheat", what happens? Will the CPU just stop working or will the computer actually catch on fire?

Thanks!

Answer:Overheating symptoms

Most of the time the motherboard's bios hardware monitoring program will set the alarm off and if not the computer will shutdown because the cpu will stop working. The major problems with overheating (like damage to the cpu) most often happens when people ignore the sympton's and just keep booting the system. Unless of course you do something stupid and leave the HSF off then it heats up so rapidly the bios doesn't shut down quick enough and it reaches it's thermal spec and literally melts.

- Also believe it or not but a cpu will still run for quite some time without the cpu fan running at all, There's some air flow going over the hsf under no load to keep it with in it's thermal spec. Run anything that loads it and it will shutdown almost right away.

Question: CPU Death symptoms

I am having some problems with my system...i think its the mobo, but it could be the CPU. I can turn the system on, and it powers...fans spinning etc (heatsink too) but no Video on screen.

Anyways, I am wondering what the symptoms are of a dead processor. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Answer:CPU Death symptoms

no beep codes? is there hdd activity that would indicate your os is starting to load. i would check the graphics card first, for some reason everyone assumes cpu first when they get no video. try removing and reseating the graphics card and then trying it in another computer if possible.

Hi, I'll keep things brief. Yoga 3 1470-problem began when it wouldn't turn back on (it had 0% battery when it shut off) even though it was charging for a while. the power button was blinkin slowly though.-took battery out and plugged it back in and it powered on. (read it on some forum)-computer froze after a while of usage. (and froze like 4 or 5 more times throughout the day)-the touchscreen wouldn't work at one point.-after reset it works again, but then the touchpad stopped working.-after reset it works again, one of the USB ports seems to not be working.-there is one USB port that is unidentified and I can't do anything from Computer Management.-at one point the screen went berserk like an old tv trying to get it's signal. it fixed itself after a few seconds.-the computer has been fine for the last 2 days.-did test with the intel CPU checker and Hot Cpu Tester Lite and they were both fine, the RAM test from Winsows Ram diagnostics is also fine.-all drivers up to date as well as the windows updates. no new programs have been installed for months. Does anyone know what it could be?? you are my last hope before I'm forced take it to get serviced (wouldn't mind saving the service cash T_T )

I just upgraded my power supply and my graphics card and seem to be having some issues. The computer works fine during gaming but seems to run into some kind of issue while benchmarking. The computer does not turn off completely but the during the heavier benchmarks the monitor goes black and shuts off (the sound still plays though) I'm thinking this may have something to do with an insufficient power supply but I'm not sure. How would this problem manifest itself?
The rig:
GPU: Asus Geforce GTX 780ti DirectCU II OC
CPU: I7-4770 3.4ghz

Have I underestimated my power needs? or do I possibly have a lemon

Hello, and thanks in advance. This may be a bit wordy, but I have been working for a couple of days on my own to fix this. I hope I haven't screwed things up too bad in doing so. About 3 days ago, AVG, and Windows firewall stopped working. Also I could not log on to the internet. I am using a wireless connection.

I tried system restore, but all my restore points were corrupted. Then I uninstalled AVG, thinking maybe it was corrupted and was blocking things,Same results

I started by trying to "Netsh firewall reset, and Netsh Winsock reset" to no avail. I looked at my services and the windows ICS was not started, when I tried manually I recieved an error 2 "cannot find the file specified"

IPconfig reports an internal error request not supported.
I then downloaded and ran, Winsockfix, LSPfix, sharedaccess.reg. None of which worked. I then suspected a virus and ran the latest DR Web cure-it program and it promptly found a Trojan Backdoor.Tdss.2459 which it removed. I googled this from another machine and also downloaded and ran TDSSkiller which found nothing.

I followed all this up with safe mode scans by SpybotS&D, M-Bam, and SAS, logs to accompany. As of this posting, I still cannot activate the Microsoft firewall, nor connect to the internet even though the system tray icon says I have a good connection. Oh and also boot up takes several minutes longer while xp is trying to start those stopped services.
I hope this is repairable as I am very ... Read more

Question: Sasser symptoms!

Hey everyone, I'm hoping that someone could help me out with this puzzle

I'm running XP Pro with Service Pack 2 and all updates (checked yesterday)

I'm getting the "NT Authority/System" shutting down box we all know from sasser and I believe MS Blast. I can of course run shutdown /a in the Run command and that stops it.. but it is a big annoyance.

When the window pops up the "Message" part appears in be in Spanish and a crude online translation shows it to be taunting from the creator. It gives me a 30 second count down before it shuts off the pc.

From what I can gather (I never actually got the virus) Sasser worked by terminating lsass.exe and the action the service took was to shut down?
This is where I'm confused.

I've been monitoring the tasks and processes via the default task manager and "Security task manager". There are no suspicious processes. When the window pops up to shut down the PC "lsass.exe" is still running. I've also gone to services and told RCP the action to take is to restart on failure.

I've tried the MS Blast and Sasser removal tools and none of them picked anything up.

Thanks for any help

I have just built my first pc with hopes in overclocking it.

Specs:
AMD 64 3200+ Venice
GIGABYTE GA-K8N Ultra-9 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX
ZALMAN CNPS7700-ALCU 120mm
CORSAIR 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 Unbuffered Dual Channel

Gigabyte comes with EasyTuner, which is what I was using. I bumped it up from 2000 to 2200 no problem, let it run for a bit, then moved to 2300 and it froze. I had to reboot and it seems to have fixed itself.

Is the freezing a symptom of the cheaper RAM? or is it a power thing? I have a 500w power supply in my case... but I've read about people jamming it up to 2800 without increasing the power.

My video card is a rather cheap ATI 300SE, but I'm not sure if that would have an effect or not.

Thanks for any tips!!

I built a new computer 3 weeks ago and it ran perfectly for 2 weeks. Then crashed while playing MOH. Problems started after that so I thought that corrupted the OS so I did a clean install of everything. Didnt help. All games freeze after about 5 minutes of play, I keep getting blue screen- "windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer", page fault errors and lock ups. It happens in every program, even just from clicking on an icon, and had a few random reboots. Ive replaced every piece of hardware including PS and done 7 OS installs with and without updates, service packs and different driver configurations. It happens when OC's or default settings. Temps are normal 110-125* F. Now Im down to the mobo or processor. Had the processor since may and never had a problem. But mob is a referb from Newegg that was supposedly inspected by the manufacturer. Im going to see if Biostar will replace it. If not Im getting an Abit. Thanks

Answer:What are symptoms of faulty CPU?

That can happen from OCing. Some people might use an OCed CPU for years, sometimes it won't last weeks. You accepted the risks when you started OCing.

What you need to do is run some Burn-in tests such as Memtest or AIDA16 for a long while & see if you get any errors.

It could also be a HDD just waiting to fail & loose your Data.

What temps are you getting BTW ? ( CPU, system, HDD, etc )

PS. In case you don't feel like doing separate bootdisks for each utility, download UltimateBootCD, AIDA16 & Memtest86 are on it.
