Unknown Publisher, Unknown everything - App2.ini.exe

Question: Unknown Publisher, Unknown everything - App2.ini.exe

I have Norton (on windows 8.1) and the only file Norton doesn't list a Trust level (shows Unknown) is the file app2.ini.exe (also app2.ini.exe.aux) and the only info I can find on the net is that viruses sometimes are named this to Hide.
Does anyone know what this file does?  Can I delete it?  Is it safe?
I called Microsoft and they said that these files aren't one of theirs (???).
Norton also lists this file isn't on a lot of peoples computers, which is a red flag.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

When installing some programs, the name of publisher appears as unknown, for others it appears as it is.
So, why the publisher name is sometime known and sometimes unknown?
I am wondering if we should distrust a program when its publisher appears as unknown, in the first installation screen?

Thanks

Answer:The publisher in unknown !

Personal opinion only ....

I have had that warning numerous times. I cannot give you an example of such scenario, but I do recall that the warning showed up when I downloaded/installed a well-known program.

If I believe the site/publisher is safe, I would go ahead and install.

Next time it happens, and you are undecided, post back here and tell us the name of the program. One of the Security experts should be able to answer you.

Question: unknown publisher?

Hi, I'm new to the forum...so I'm not sure what exactly I need to include about my OS. If you need more info then please tell me! I reinstalled Win XP the other day because I had had a linux system installed on a seperate partition and was running out of disk space on my windows partition, plus I never used the linux system. Before I reinstalled I was having the same problem. Everytimen I try to download a setup file from the internet I get an "unknown publisher" message. It only gives the option of 'ok' then doesnt start the setup or finish downloading. I changed my internet options to accept all cookies and after that i still recieved the message but it gave me a "run" option also. when i click run it starts the setup but then an error message immediately pops up telling me it cant complete the setup. ive tried downloading from safe reputable sites (thinking maybe the file was bad) but this happens for everything i try to download! I really needn to put virus protection on my computer, but windows wont let me download anything! What could be causing this?

Thanks in advance!

OK, let's see, my questions for now:

1. Which browser (brand and version) do you use?
2. Does something change - besides the Unknown Publisher pop-up - in your browser screen (like a yellow band at the top of the browser window)?

Is it normal to have unknown publisher for everything i download on this site?

I do have issues but not sure what.

Answer:Unknown publisher

Your other topic with a FRST log is posted here. Now that it is posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Response Team member...nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the information or any log(s) you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process or make things worst which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the Malware Response Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. The BC Staff

Question: unknown publisher

My full version of AVG just ran out a few days ago so i'm looking for a new antivirus program.
I've downloaded trial versions of different scanners but I always get the same error message when iI try and install the program. "unknown publisher"
Vista will not let me install antivirus software or any service packs.

Vista 32bit home edition
OS - Internet Explorer

Pages don't load completely, runs very slow. I know a little about computers, I guess an average user.

I really need some help with this

Thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide.

Answer:unknown publisher

Hallo kscatt, There is a lot of Malware around at the moment that masquerade as legitimate Anti virus/malware solutions (in saying this please use the download links submitted by our Forum members)

A good place to start is to download Malwarebytes free standalone scanner, update it & run a Scan;

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

If you are going to discontinue with AVG then uninstall it & then run the removal tool;

list of anitvirus removal tools

You can then look at another Anti Virus here is a list of free ones with the appropriate download links;

Free Anti-Virus Softwares

There is a possibility malware may be blocking you from installing programs so see how you go with Malwarebytes scanner & if there are any problems let us know

EDIT: Just an after thought i think AVG paid version has its own firewall it would pay to check & turn on Windows Firewall if necessary;

Windows Firewall - On or Off

EDIT: A couple of things i should have mentioned before. when you download your installer to say your desktop, right click on it & select Properties then choose the option to Unblock/Apply/OK

Then to install right click on the installer again then select Run as Administrator

Question: unknown publisher

I am trying to see my home security cameras via the internet on a Gateway laptop that is Vista operated. After entering the address I am taken to the general home page for my security cameras but I get the yellow pop-up bar saying Active-X needs to be installed. So I click on install Active-X. I then get a pop-up box saying "Publisher is unknown." I am assuming that this has to do with the camera system's software. I then click to continue and I get the final pop-up box which states that windows has blocked the installation because the publisher is unknown. I have gone into security settings and enabled all Active-X on Internet, Local Internet, and Trusted sites to no avail. I have turned off firewall and pop-up blockers. Can anyone tell me how do I go around window's blocking an unknown publisher?

I am able to see the system on two XP computers so I know it is working.

Thanks

I would not be turning off my security programs.

This "site" is using a control, probably ActiveX, that launches any .exe in a browser. While this usually works, it is a huge security risk. Looks like Vista is just doing its job.

I use Ebay for my business and up until some time ago i was only able to use basic picture services to download the pictures which frankly took forever to download (about 2 minutes per picture) and if i tried to use the newer version it offered all i got was a blank white screen with a funny little picture in the corner and then if you look at the attatchment it says the publisher is unknown or something. Anyway one day im sure Ebay said to download a small file or something which i did and lo and behold i could use the updated picture services (about 20 secs per picture). Now all of a sudden its disappeared and as the attatchment shows that is what i now get.
How i can i get the better way back on my computer. Cheers.

Oh dear it seems my file is 2 kb too large to place on here and i dont know how to make it smaller so if you want to see it then please email me at [email protected]

I am new in the development world, devloped a tool for my own use and would like to send it to my friends. The problem is that Microsoft mark me as Unknown publisher and with win 7, it almost seems as a virus with their scary messages.

Is there a free way to solve the problem? and if not, what should I do to get rid of that message?

I hope my question is published in the right forum and if not, my aplogize!

Internet Explorer - Security Warning
Windows has found a prolem with this file.
Name: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

NSIS Error -
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or
a virus.
You may want to contact the author of this installer of obtain a new

I've tried disabling the firewall, resetting the advanced settings, re-downloading the NSIS installer (got the Unknown Publisher error), and about a hundred other things I've read online... can anyone help me fix this??

Thanks!

Hi there,
This is my first post so you'll have to bear with me regarding my description.
My wife has a Acer Extensa 4220 laptop running Windows Vista.
She received a link yesterday through MSN Messenger from one of her friends that was a link that contained her hotmail email address. So I understand it she clicked on the link but apparently nothing happened!
When she started up her Laptop up today she entered her login password as usual but was then presented with an Open File - Security Warning window that we can't get passed.
It says 'The publisher could not be verified, Are you sure want to run this program?
Name: C:\224337.exe
Publisher: Unknown Publisher
Type: Application
From: C:\224337.exe'
Run or Cancel.
I am assuming this is a virus that has been downloaded through MSN but being a Mac user myself I am not too sure what to do. I have a bit of PC knowledge but not much!!
If I hit cancel then I just get a blank screen that does nothing.
I have tried all the usual repairs by pressing F8 on start-up but this has done nothing.
I have a back-up of the laptop that I created through the acer software but it doesn't seem to recognize it. I can't get far enough to run avg or anything else for that matter.
I have no system disks as it is a budget machine that comes with very little.
Anyone got any ideas.

kind regards
Steve

Please help, I am trying to troubleshoot my brother's computer. He is running 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate and is completely unable to install any programs on it at all. Regardless of where he gets the program from, be it downloaded or from a disc, a popup always comes up saying the publisher of the file is unknown and it refuses to run the program, even run as admin. Windows Update constantly has errors completing any updates at all, and I suspect the problems are linked. This is with a fresh install of Win 7, and I'm told the problem first started with Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

WIN7: Do you want to allow the following program from unknown publisher to make changes to this computer.
Why do I receive this message when I click on this program from the start menu?
This program is installed. It is not from a unknown publisher
This is the message I get

Program name: siw.exe
Publisher: Unknown
File origin: Hard drive on this computer

I click "No" the program does not start, I click "Yes" the program starts

This also happens when I tick the Firefox icon when I do not have any saved tabs open.

It doesn't do that on my system.
I'd suggest uninstalling the SIW program, then installing a freshly downloaded copy from GTopala's website: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html

Hi, I've been reading through the forum to try and find a solution to my problem - but none discovered yet. This seems close to what I am experiencing, so I'll add it here. In summary I want to use KM Player as my default media player. I wanted to change it via the process you explain above, but as in Beatriz case, KM Player is not listed in the "Programs" listing under Default Programs. So I went around another way and in explorer right clicked the avi. file I want to open, and changed the default to KM Player. Now this is a solution but not a good one, as all the other video file types are still not associated with KM Player, and it is laborious to have to go and change them one by one. So that is my first issue (but not my main one) - if there is an easy way to get ALL video file types to associate with KM Player then that would be great.

My second issue is the main one. When I now double click on an AVI file I do not immediately get KM Player opening. Instead I get a dialogue box pop up saying "User Account Control. Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?". I tried to get a screenshot, but for some reason Alt+Prt Sc doesn't work? When I click on allow - then KM Player opens. I don't want this pop-up each time - as KM Player is something I trust. So how can I tell Windows to trust it? 1. Turned UAC to "never notify"
2. Unchecked the box "always ask before opening this file"
3. Going to the app, Right-clicking > Properties > click on unblock.
- Note: When I click on unblock and apply the settings and right click > properties the unblock option is still clickable + doesn't stop windows from bringing up the popup

Any suggestions?

One desktop shortcut to an exe file began displaying the Open File - Security Warning dialog box stating the Publisher is Unknown, with no tick box selection available to trust this publisher. In trying to get to the bottom of this problem, I moved some shortcuts around between folders and created some new ones. All of the newly created shortcuts and moved shortcuts now display the Open File - Security Dialog Box. The exe files open fine, just not using the shortcut. This has been since a recent windows update.

This is a real PITA any clues as to what may be causing this and how to fix it.

Cheers

Hello, I have two Dell computers both running Windows XP. Anytime I try to download anything from IE on either computer one of these errors comes up:

Internet Explorer - Security Warning
Windows has found a prolem with this file.
Name: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe
Publisher: Unknow Publisher

NSIS Error -
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or
a virus.
You may want to contact the author of this installer of obtain a new
copy. It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command
line switch(NOT RECOMMENDED)

I've tried disabling the firewall, resetting the advanced settings, re-downloading the NSIS installer (got the Unknown Publisher error), and about a hundred other things I've read online... can anyone help me fix this??

Thanks!

this is an earlier posting and I am experiencing same issue on 3 Dell computers. Two laptops and desktop pc. Desktop and and laptop have XP and the other laptop Vista. Basically no downloaded program from the internet can be installed. Either receive unable to authenticate installer, Unknown publisher, or NSIS error. I have ran multiple spyware, and registry cleaners but nothing has seemed to help. Any ideas?

ie 10 windows 8 blocks downloads unknown publisher

I am trying to download software from an employer-to-be. I have tried everything I can think of - adding site to trusted sites, and ie 10 windows 8 continues to block. I sent screen shots to the tech people and they have not gotten back to me, and I am wondering if anyone knows any ideas to try. I need to download the call center software.

Oddly, the programs for this call center show up on my programs and features, but the download seems to be working on a unending loop feed with blocked because unknown publisher alert keeps popping.

I have made a setup.exe file to distribute to our customers.
I run it from IE.

After the Run Save Cancel popping up it says "unknown publisher" (see attached image)

How can I assign a publisher to my EXE? I at least want it to say Publisher: MyName rather than unknown.

I guess for that warning to go away I need to purchase a Verisign or something but I hear thats expensive?
I would settle for the warning to at least mention my name !

thanks,,

Windows 7 is preventing a Steam game from running on standard user accounts because it says it is from an "unknown publisher" - so it requires an admin password to run - and then even after entering the admin password, a popup appears which says "Error - failed to find Steam" and the game will not run. The only workaround I've found is to change the account to an administrator account, but I do not want to do this - any advice on remedying this?

Answer:Can't run Steam game on standard account, because publisher is unknown

Right click the Steam.exe and Run As Administrator. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...5688-IFHZ-2170
You can also post in the Steam Forum for better results then in this general Microsoft forum.

Customer is trying to run an rdp connection on their desktop to a unc path with an executable file.   I get a popup that states "Open File - Security Warning", unknown publisher, and it give the unc path (\\server\filename.exe).  If I
click ok, the program executes ok.  The customer doesn't want this warning.  Have tried disabling UAC, putting .exe  in inclusion list in GPEDIT.MSC (User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components >Attachment Manager-
then set -Inclusion list).
Have also tried allowing "Launching applications and unsafe files " in Internet Options.
Lastly, tried enabling "Turn off the Security Settings Check feature " in GPEDIT.MSC.
At my wits end.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?

2.
On the right pane, double click
Inclusion list for low file types.
3.
Click
Enable.
4.
Include the file types such as

I was just about to go to bed when I logged in via remote desktop to to my Media Center PC to schedule a show to record when the Windows update notification popped up. I have it set to install updates automatically on Sundays, but since no shows were scheduled to record for the rest of the night I decided to go ahead and install the updates. After it was done and rebooted I logged in to check and make sure everything was OK.

Now when I run any system program (mmc.exe, task manager, etc.) that usually doesn't require a UAC prompt, I now get a UAC prompt showing publisher unknown. I have the Sysinternals process explorer installed, and when I run it as administrator it shows the publisher correctly as Microsoft Corporation. I checked and there are no errors in the event viewer.

I figured it has something to do with security certificates. I ran sfc /verifyonly and it finds errors, so I ran sfc /scannow and let it repair. After rebooting it didn't fix it though. Running sfc /verifyonly again it still shows errors, and running sfc /scannow this time and I get "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." In the CBS.log file there aren't any lines with "Cannot repair member file" in it, but there are a lot of other things.

Since this is a Media Center PC, it is recording TV shows daily, so I have limited time to do anything that requires rebooting or shutting down. I have to go to bed, I've already stayed up wa... Read more

I REALLY WILL STOP SURFING PORN NOW

pops up new ie windows (not tabs) that link to random sites, often unknown search engines showing results for last string searched on google, often for other random things (news 6 live, adfat, sals barbershop). seemingly benign.

After some time of this, more serious infections occur, including antivirus soft, many others.

Malabytes will knock out what it brings in, but not kill the initial infection.

have run malabytes in safe mode, safe mode + neworking, and mutiple times after knocking out later more malicious infections in both safe mode and regular. Sometimes picks up a few stragglres, sometimes not. But in all cases I still have the original thing which pops up a new ie window to some odd thing and presumably opens the door for the rest.

Any help greatly appreciated, and, really, despite any other sex life to speak of, sad though that may be, I will leave the porn sites alone after this.

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing resto... Read more

I was in the process of updating several sata controllers and chipset drivers. I also installed a new USB 3.0 hub and was in the process of moving around several devices between ports. I had a problem with my keyboard which uses USB 2.0 as a connector but I would recieve a "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)" code 43 on every port on the USB 3.0 Hub. I finally gave up and put the keyboard back into the 2.0 ports on my motherboard. When I finally fixed everything. I realized my DVD drive was not working. I had to reconnect the SATA cables because it got disconnected while I was moving my PC around. Upon the last restart of my PC.

I checked Disk Managment and noticed lots of system reserved partitions and drives which were not there before. I have no idea what happened but I think updating several drivers and the combination of reinstalling USB ports via device manager or the optical drive being reconnected may have messed up how windows used to have system reserves as partitions. I only had one visible system reserved drive before, now I have 2 visible and lettered system reserved drives.

I also have a unknown partition at the top of the list, I cannot right click that partition and select any options. The only option in my context menu is Help which brings me a link to Overview of Disk Management

I also had my video quick access as my DVD optical drive when I restarted. I have fixed this issue by changing my quick access links back to their proper folders... Read more

Answer:Unknown Partition - Unknown File System - Cannot edit or remove!

Hello taqiyya6 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Your problem is actually quite basic. You are going into the Disk Managetool and seeing system reserved partitions mounted and assigned drive letters where they shouldn't be seeing any! The 450mb partition is there to allow changing from the MBR type primary to the GPT type usually seen with server set up or large volumes exceeding 2tb in size such as installing and partitioning a new 2.5tb, 3tb, 4tb, or even one of the latest 5tb drives.

The sight of the System Reserved partition being present on the second Disk 1 500gb drive simply shows that had previously seen a Windows installation on it at some time likely before adding in the large 1tb Disk 0 drive you have the present install on. The most likely to succeed option for taking care of the smaller 500gb if nothing is on it would be a complete wipe and a fresh single partition intended for storage and backup. That would eliminate the first SR but not small second unless using an open source type partiioning utility like GParted while still an option to close up the small gap since it is only a 500gb and not exceeding the 2tb mark.

For cleaning the mess overall however going into the Device Manager and knocking out drivers before a full restart would allow Windows to redetect the drives fresh without seeing the System Reserved and MBR parts mounted again at least on the OS drive being the main concern since the SR part has to remain invisible as a system protected space not mount... Please help me folks, I'm on borrowed time today.

I had to reformat my computer thanks to a handful of Trojans and of course, I am missing the Ethernet driver to connect. In the past, I had a friend set me up, but he never told me how to do it and he's gone in basic training so I can't ask for his help today.

I have a custom-built Compaq HP
I will have Windows XP HOME installed when I get the cash.

What I need is help figuring out where to look to find the model number to install the correct driver. I have tried the HP website and it does not work; My driver is built into the motherboard.

I currently have Windows XP Professional for English Students, it's my father's OS

I'm not sure if this forum supports Windows installed on a MacBook,
but I'd appreciate any help provided.

Regarding my laptop, it's a MacBook Pro bought around 2011,
witn Windows 7 x64 installed from my friend's disc.
(Sorry I cannot remember exactly what it was)
"Barely alive" condition.
Works fine, but suddenly shuts down at times, alert shows battery not inserted (UNDETACHABLE on this MacBook model), won't run without power adapter connected, immediately shuts down when inserting USB cable into 1 of the 2 USB ports, won't detect internet connection, and so on and so on......

That aside, it worked fine until last week.

I was running Windows Update when I accidentally insert USB cable into the wrong port and "forced shut down" the laptop.

When rebooted, I get a flash of BSOD and auto-restart, which leads to startup repair.

From there, I ran startup repair a few times, each time I get the successful result yet Windows still won't start.

Then I switched to Mac OS to use it for some urgent stuff.
While in Mac OS I did went around and did "repair disk" and stuff to the bootcamp.

Next I tried searching for solutions through my phone and did this and that on command prompt.
chkdsk bootrec etc etc tried all posted solutions to something similar to my case.

The next thing I realized was that I now cannot even choose "Windows" on boot and I got stuck.

Then I asked my neighbor and fortunately could borrow Window... Read more

Recently my computer (Dell Dimension 8100, Win98SE) developed a problem with Outlook. I tried everything to resolve it, including uninstall and reinstall. I finally reformatted and reloaded everything. On the first time around it didn't automatically reload the chipset and I had never had that happen before, so I missed it completely and loaded other hardware before I realized that I had then screwed up the IRQ settings, so I reformatted and reloaded again. I also upgraded from IE 5.0 to IE 6.0.

I'm also having problems where if Outlook is receiving mail a Word document will not load until it is done. There is a severe delay in windows opening from one application to another at different times that I can't pin down.

Sometimes the screen doesn't refresh properly.

I had continual problems trying to install Shockwave and Flash, so I restored IE 5.0 and upgraded to 5.5. I now regularly have a problem with this. I can load the animated Flash egreetings cards, however, when I do the Shockwave Daily Jigsaw puzzle I get to the point where I click on 'Play Game', IE hangs and I got the following errors two different times:

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.Any help to solve this problem would be appreciated. ..........Kumpie

Answer:Operating system (unknown) on unknown local disk

Welcome!

Try marking the C partition as active again, using the Windows method in my post here.

Then run Startup Repair from the repair disc. Hopefully it will see your installation.

I've just installed Windows 10 and experimented with the Groove music player. It finds all the songs but they are tagged Unknown Artist and Unknown Album. The songs appear fine in iTunes with the correct details and album art.

I reset Groove and made it scan the music directories again but the problem remains. Any solutions?

Answer:Groove Shows Unknown Artist & Unknown Album

It's not something I've experienced and so I'm probably going to be of little help. However, out of interest do the actual song files themselves have metadata stored in them? For example, find the one of these audio files in Windows File Explorer, Right-Click > Properties > Details Tab.

If there is no metadata there, in Groove Music > Settings, is "Media Info: Automatically retrieve and update missing album art and metadata" set to on?

Also, do you have Indexing switched on in Control Panel > Indexing Options and the location where your music is stored (EG: Users folder) set to be indexed?

I am trying to upgrade my 3 year old VAIO VPC-EB series laptop to a new hard drive. I got a 7200 1TB HGST hard drive. The old hard drive was 500GB. On my first attempt, I decided to backup all of my user data on another drive, restore OS (Windows 7) from Sony's recovery DVDs which I made in advance, and then restore user data. Unfortunately, this does not work because the new hard drive is an "Advanced Format" drive. Once the fresh OS starts booting, the setup complains “Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware”. My understanding, Sony's answer to this issue is that they simply don't support upgrading hardware to an incompatible hard drive. It turns out I may need to install OS using a retail DVD, preferably with SP2. Well, I have several, but this doesn't work well either because for some reason the Sony VAIO activation key does not work with retail Windows 7 SP2 DVDs (and I don't have any other activation keys I can use).

Which finally brings me to the issue I mentioned in the title. The last thing I have tried is to simply create a system image of the entire install using Windows 7 backup, boot from Windows 7 recovery disk, and restore the system image onto the new hard drive. This worked pretty well until I discovered one strange issue. Whenever I run a Microsoft Windows program that requires administrator privileges (e.g. the microsoft management console mmc.exe) I get a warning message asking if I would like to r... Read more

Hello. My computer recently (less than a day ago) started to display User Account Control prompts whenever I deleted or copied that weren't in the "Users" folder, such as the Program Files folder. I am using an Administrator account, and the User Account Control is set to notify when programs make changes to Windows but without dimming my desktop. Whenever I try to delete any type of file not in the Users folder, the User Account Control prompt pops up like in the attachment. I believe there is something wrong with the "File Operation" program, because I'd imagine it would be signed by Microsoft and would automatically be elevated to Admin status so the prompt shouldn't show in the first place. Clicking on "Change when these notifications appear" doesn't do anything, but I am able to copy/delete files after clicking "yes".

I'd really appreciate help, because it's getting annoying getting this prompt whenever I want to delete or copy a file, and this prompt never appeared before when I was just deleting a file until a day ago. I'm using Windows 7. I'm just using a Windows 8 RP theme. Also, I don't want to disable UAC, since it lowers security.

I feel perhaps something happened to that certain registry key or keys related to it. But I'm not sure.

EDIT: I figured out that something was wrong with shell32.dll, so I replaced it with an unmodified copy of the file from another computer and the prompt doesn't come up anymore.

On some machines in the company, a setup.exe runs fine but on many other machines the setup.exe shows a pop up that says:
Program name: setup.exe
Publisher: Unknown
File Origin: Network Drive

Why does my machine display Unknown publisher when I know it has a valid certificate because other machines show who the certificate is from and on this machine it doesn't. UAC is turned all the way up and the internet security zone is set to Medium/Low

Answer:setup.exe getting "Publisher: Unknown" when it has a valid certificate

Enable the Include all network paths (UNCs) setting in Internet Options applet.
Click Start, Run and type INETCPL.CPL
Select the Security tab, Local intranet
Click Sites button
Put a checkmark near the following option:
Include all network paths (UNCs)

Hi all,

I've recently noticed that when running many Windows programs with Administrator privileges that the UAC window that pops up displays the publisher as Unknown.

I can confirm from another PC that in the case of Command Prompt the publisher should display as Microsoft Corporation.

What could be causing this? Have I altered a Windows setting that resulted in this behaviour or is this indicative of malware or remote influence?

My router is password protected and I regularly run full system scans with a reputable, subscription-based anti-virus.

If this isn't related to windows settings and incorrect configurations then what could be causing this?

Thanks for your advice.

hi friends
I've had no changes to my system that I know of but "out of the blue" I have mmc.exe giving me an elevation request showing "unknown publisher" - hence a security or UAC issue.

can someone point me to a valid thread that will steer me through a REAL answer? I have perused the flood of such errors threaded onto microsoft forums and all end in about the same sorry state: "please do a system restore"..... "please run sfc /scannow and that will keep you busy for awhile - tada"

thanks for your help

I'm running Windows 8.1 and I have an old version of photoshop elements in my x86 program files (it's elements 4.0, please don't laugh). I have UAC on the next to last setting before disabling it altogether. When I launch elements, UAC asks me if I trust it because it's an unknown publisher. I don't want to disable UAC, but I want it to trust elements and not popup the "are you really sure" box each time.

Answer:UAC-How do I "trust" a program from an unknown publisher?

Hello Jigawatt, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Would that be an "Open File - Security Warning" dialog prompt like below instead of UAC?

If so, then unblocking the file should stop it.

Hope this helps for now,

Hi guys,

I have a Win7 Pro 64bit machine that is constantly coming up with a UAC box stating it doesn't know the publisher when I run windows programs, for example cleanmgr.exe.
I've attached a screen shot of the error message, sorry don't know how to embed the image.
I only get the UAC with windows files not other programs.
Any idea what's wrong?

On a side note, I discovered this when I found I was not able to do the windows updates on this machine, keeps giving me errors. Thinking they might be related.

Answer:Windows error: Unknown Publisher on windows files

Hello BSeanD,

Do you have administrator access on your machine?
Also, you can change your UAC settings by following option one from this tutorial. But it is highly recommended to keep UAC enabled, as it is a great security feature.
Good luck and keep us posted,

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1. I ran HijackThis as you do and saw the following line which I removed.
Internet Settings, ProxyServer = 127.0.0.1:19876When running DDS in the dds.txt file I found these settings which may be unrelated but I cannot explain them.TCP: Interfaces\{5D969EFE-1A71-4BC0-950C-B6214B4FC1DD} : DHCPNameServer = 88.82.13.60 88.82.13.60When I found these items I ran CCleaner just to lighten the amount I needed to scan. Then I ran ComboFix and Malwarebytes Antimalware and found nothing. I then used GMER and removed a virtual cdrom that had been sitting on my computer long after Deamon Tools had been removed.
It is the proxy server that worries me. Doing a quick search of it there does seem to be a Trojan keylogger that will listen on that port.

Hi All;

I'm frustrated with the fact that I cannot open attachments that come from "unknown publisher". It seems everyone I know does not have this problem except me.

Is it my anti-virus (MicroTrend) that is blocking this?

What can I do to get around this.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Answer:Cannot Open "Unknown Publisher"

What program tells you "unknown publisher"?

Have you looked at MicroTrend's manual or Help or Properties/Settings to see if there is anything about blocking "unknown publisher"?

Have you tried disabling or uninstalling MicroTrend to see if that makes a difference?

I turned on computer today and I saw that I have two mouses on screen. My main mouse is movable and I can work normally with it, but second one is stuck on top left corner and it's copying my main mouse icon (hand, arrow, typing icon).

And then I don't know why but I have looked into System Resolution control panel and I saw that I have a third monitor that weren't supposed to be there. Resolution is 640x480, and it's number 1, and my primary monitor is number 2.

I can't turn off that monitor ("Show picture just on 1" (my primary monitor)) like I had it before.
I am posting screenshots.

Hi,

I've been struggling for months with this problem.

My laptop won't connect to some networks. Usually there are networks like that on my university or other shared networks.
The problem I get is that it doesn't recognize the DNS server. Usually it is solved whenever I restart my laptop, but then the problem returns after a while.

I have entered a automatic DNS address, tried programmes that have flushed my DNS and so on, but nothing seems to help. Is there any other solution out there that will allow me to stay connected?

Thanks

Answer:DNS Server unknown/Unknown Network

Welcome to the forum try setting dns to 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 the error can be you have no connection as that will give a dns error as well

I disabled UAC in Vista, but would like to give it a try in W7, especially since you need UAC on to have Gadgets, which I also want to investigate.

But... I have a TSR pgm with 'unknown publisher' I want to be permanently approved to run without the UAC popup. There is a 'don't ask any more for this pgm' checkbox, but it doesn't work (UAC keeps asking). With UAC on it won't run at startup. With UAC off, it starts fine. Is there a way to do this?

Hi Don,

UAC doesnt have a 'don't ask any more for this pgm' checkbox and never will

Microsoft designed Task Scheduler to fill the void by not including a "White-List" for UAC

This Tutorial I created will show you how to allow the application to run with full System Administrative permissions without a UAC dialogue, I use it myself for launching some legacy applications that dont run on Vista and Win7 when UAC is enabled and it works perfectly Bypass UAC - Vista Forums

It will be updated for Windows 7 when it reaches RC status, if you have any problems then dont hesitate to ask

I have a number of files online which customers may download. Some of these files generate the "Unknown Publisher" security warning message on some of my customer's machines who are running IE7.

My question is: - How does one become a "Known" publisher?

I have searched the Microsoft sites but cannot find a single reference to how an "unknown" publisher can register and become a "known" publisher.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who knows about this.

Question: Unknown .dll's

Hi Guys

Just curious, but has anyone come across any of these?

ravemuse.dll
wivovego.dll
bunesufe.dll

All system32 files

I had problems with lots of unwanted popups and was alerted to these as scumware by Security task manager. I duly quaranteed them but as per usual any reboot just brought them back.
In the end I deleted them, which although it did the trick I still get annoying messages concerning these missing dll's on start up.
I have Googled these files, but there seems to be no information on them, and until I can identify what generated them, I cant begin to try to get rid of them.

Any ideas would be most appreciated

Thank you

Question: <UNKNOWN>

I was just wondering if <unknown> listed in my running processes every now and again is something to check out.

What could it be:

* another Windows flaw
* a genuine Application that I trust
* Spyware, Virus and all the rest

Answer:<UNKNOWN>

Hello Sativa and welcome to the BC forums. We need a complete HijackThis (HJT) log file to be able to analyze what is happening on your computer. If you do not have a copy of HijackThis or do not have the latest version (1.99.1) then download it from here: HijackThis_sfx.exe Double-click on the file you just downloaded and click on the UnZip button to install the program. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ folder by default.Boot normally, start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.I will review your log when it comes in.DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL I CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTEROT

Question: Unknown RAM hog.

There are some problems with my computer I just can't seem to figure out what's wrong.

First of all before I explain the situation..I'm 100% sure I don't have any viruses/adware/spyware on my computer as well as malware. I'm really good with keeping those things out of my computer and I scan like twice a month from multiple programs.

Okay so...for some reason just randomly my RAM has been acting all funky and randomly going to 100% usage. I've narrowed the reasons to what causes it but I don't know why it does it.... the problem is when I move/copy/delete files. Here is a picture of my task manager and what it looks like when it's running normally (on the left side) and what it looks like when I'm deleting/copying/moving files. Below each screenshot is a snapshot of the processes sorted by Memory usage.

The only fix I found for this so far is to end the process explorer.exe and then create a new process explorer.exe ...but it's such a hassle to always do this every time I want to move files from one place to another. There are other things that trigger this as well but the most noticeable one that I could see is when I copy/move files.

Thanks.

Answer:Unknown RAM hog.

One thing that I'm noticing is that there are four instances of Chrome in the second Task Manager window. Are you opening that many instances?

When I attempt to run games they minimize and are unable to restore. I first thought the problem to be another running program or spyware... no luck as of yet though. Here is a Hijackthis read out, any help would be welcome if someone sees something bad and how to remove it. Thanks.

Answer:Help w/ Unknown

Please move hijackthis.exe into a permanent folder.

To create a permanent folder click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar click on File, New, Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply. DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Answer:**Help with unknown .exe's*

here is what you will want to do...

Download all the following on another machine, burn to CD and load on the machine:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-...bj=dl&tag=top5
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html
http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp

From here, once you have the files on CD, shutdown the machine you want to clean. Disconnect the network cable from the machine
Boot the machine into safemode. To do this, as soon as you power on the machine, start pressing (not holding-tap twice a second) the F8 button. When windows goes to start, it will give you a screen to select the boot mode. Select safemode, and boot. Once you are in the system, you will want to do the following. Load stinger (last download) and run it. That will find any of the current malicious viruses. Then run Lava soft. That will install, so you will want to uninstall it before you go on to the next one. Then do Spybot. Install and run the full system scan and the imunization. Then uninstall. After that, install the MS antispyware tool.... This one, is actually pretty good, so you should keep it on the system, especially since that is SP2.

You shouldn't need to reboot for any install. if prompted, just select no.
When you are finished with getting things installed and have finished running them, make sure you uninstall them, since you only need 1 to get t... Read more

Hi,The Messenger Service is a service that is installed by default on XP.. and is enabled by default. Once you update to service pack 2, it's getting disabled. But since you don't have SP2 installed, it explains why this service is still enabled. To disable this service:*Go to start >run and type: services.msc and click OKScroll down in that list until you find the service MessengerDoubleclick on it.
