Cannot access most websites or download files except in safe mode

Question: Cannot access most websites or download files except in safe mode

As of a couple days ago, I have not been able to connect to most websites. If I do, it's after repeatedly attempting, and even then it may only load half way. Google will load most of the time, as will other low information websites. After doing a little experimenting with streaming media, I found that it will allow a small amount of information in every minute or so. While in safe mode with networking, everything internet based works perfectly fine.
I have run many different scanners (tdsskiller, avast, malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc), which do find things, but nothing that ends up fixing the issue. I am using windows 7. I am not sure if this is malware or maybe even something that is occurring due to user ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Cannot access most websites or download files except in safe mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Got a problem with 3 websites that I can only seem to access when in windows 7 safe mode using Firefox.

I have tried possibly everything mentioned when googling the issue except for reinstalling win 7 which would be my very last option.

I know the websites are not down as i can still view them in safe mode when I try to ping them on the pc get " general failure" message.

Any tips folks.

Answer:Can access certain websites in win7 safe mode but not in normal !!!

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Maybe you have already tried a clean boot:
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Maybe you have already tried looking at your system's host file:
Hosts File : Use in Windows 7 / Vista

And resetting IE:
Internet Explorer - Reset

For these websites, you mentioned that you...
...can view them in the safe mode
...cannot ping them in the normal mode
Can you ping them in the safe mode?
Some web servers do not respond to pings.

You might also want to look at tracert. You can use if just like ping from the command prompt window. It is normal to get a few timeouts on some of the hops.

Can you share one or more of these websites with us so that we can give specific tests?

For your antivirus tool, you listed malware. Did you meant Malwarebytes? You might want to make a scan with ESET's online scanner.

I need to access an .exe file when in safe mode. The instructions say to put it on the deskstop, then reboot into safe mode, but that doesn't work. Apparently only installed programs show. I've put the file into folders that show files in safe mode, but the file doesn't show when I boot into safe mode. I put it on a CD, but while the CD drive is recognized, the file doesn't come up.

Running Windows XP Home, SP1 (not my computer)

An odd file showed up in my documents called My Sharing Folders, when I clicked on it the screen came up blank indicating to me they were hidden, deleted file but it keeps coming back. It's appeared now in My Computer along with others that are also blank. I removed Windows Media Player, Live Messenger, MSN Messenger in add and remove programs. Now I can't access anything in Sysinternals programs. I decided to use the Symantec Dell pc restore and start over, now I can't access anything in safemode, the keyboard locks out and I can't type in dialog box, I run AVG 8.0, Spybot S and D, Malwarebytes finds nothing. Avg picks up malware.generic, malware.Isearch,malware.antispywareshield and malware.newdot, it removes them but thier back the next day, when I could still access hijack this it found a string in Avg called WormRadar.com, couldn't do anything about it started losing control, my control now is limited, this thing must be sleeping to let me type this much. Hello,
I have an external drive which I'm trying to reuse as a storage only medium. It's a usb drive on which at one point I managed to install a limited version of windows xp,to run on my first netbook (which I no longer use). I have put other stuff on the drive so I don't want to format it, but there are two files I can't get rid of.They are macromedia flash files. (ocx and exe). I tried taking ownership, running cmd adminstrator, going into safe mode with command prompt, and running admin powershell. I can see the attributes - A and R but I can't change them. I've also tried deleting them via filemenutools delete locked files, but that does not help me either. I want them gone, can anyone help me? I've read one other post where the OP had the same problem, but his problem was solved because his antivirus program eventually decided his file was a virus and got rid of it. So it is possible, but I can't find what to do. I guess it's not a big thing but it bothers me that I'm not able to remove these files no matter what I do. Help would be appreciated...

Answer:access denied when I delete files in safe mode admin

I would just reformat it personally. Start from a clean slate.

After attempting to start my Laptop in Safe Mode, it loaded drivers normally only to crash a few seconds later. A prompt message appears but is impossible to read because Windows immediately reboots upon showing the prompt.

Safe Mode with Networking loads normally.

Any ideas or advice?

The computer is an Acer 4743G running Windows 7 Home Basic x64.

I have a fairly new Asus G74S i7 laptop running Win 7 64. I cannot go to some websites - but they can be browsed ok in safe mode. For example - I can't go to CNN.com or Zone Alarm - but I can go to MSNBC, Avast, etc.

I've tried going to the numeric IP to bypass DNS, but that doesn't work either.

One thing that seems a bit strange (as if this wasn't strange enough already) - If I try to ping a site that is known not to exist - like xylaseighjlag.com - I get a timeout, as one would expect.

BUT if I ping a site I can't go to, such as Crestron.com, I get "General Failure".

It seems to be getting worse, as I was able to go to Zone Alarm last week, but not this week.

It does the same thing on different ISP's, and three different browsers - IE, Firefox, and Chrome. I even tried tethering off my tablet using Bluetooth and WiFi - same results.

I've tried all the usual fixes - Checking the hosts file, resetting IE, looking at Whats' Running, trying various Registry fixes - CCleaner, Glary, System Mechanic, etc. I've tried every malware client I can find, including MB, Avast, MS, etc.

MB did find a couple of dubious things, which were removed, but this had no effect.

I've researched/tried every fix online I could find - no effect.

If I do a clean boot of Win 7 without actually going into safe mode it still doesn't work.

I tried doing a System Restore, but for some reason all of the earlier restore points vanished.

Short of re-installing Windows, does anyone hav... Read more

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Lenovo will also come with a trial ware program - cant remember which
I would also remove AVG 2013 - using the removal tool - see below

have a read here and post back as much info as possible
Pre-posting Requirements - for both Wired and Wireless Connectivity Issues

Normally are you using wireless - and in safe mode with networking - are you still talking wireless

can you connect to the router with a cable and if so does that work in normal mode ?

Lets see an ipconfig /all in both normal and safemode with networking - make sure you also tell us which is which when you post

Hi all,

I've had this problem since yesterday (5/25/15) and haven't managed to find a fix for it yet. The issue is that although I have internet access--and Google even boots up how it normally would--I am unable to access websites. I am able to search perfectly fine, but the connections "time out" and do not connect. When I decided to troubleshoot, I received "-website name- is online, but network is unable to connect". I am still able to access the internet on my phone and other devices.

Thank you for any and all help!

UPDATE: I now am unable to view the Google homepage on startup with Google Chrome.

I run Windown IE, Microsoft XP, and Norton 360. Yesterday, I tried to visit a website and received a virus warning. The website did not load. However, ever since then, my general access to websites, including MajorGeeks has become very sluggish. I've run Spybot - Search & Destroy and Spybot - Search & Destroy, but neither found anything. I ran CCleaner and defrag. I tried system restore, but that does not let me restore to a time before getting that virus warning.

I ran speed tests at speedtest.net and speakeasy.net, both of which show my download speed as 4,800+ Kbps and an upload speed of 480 kbps.

It takes about three minutes or more to open a MajorGeeks window. MGTools now is downloading at 254 bytes/sec (with an estimated download time of 17 minutes) and SUPERAntiSpyware is downloading at 2.09 KB/sec (with an estimated download time of 1 hour 27 minutes.)

I have combofix.exe and MGtools.exe downloaded. PLEASE HELP!

I only started having this problem today. Whenever I try to download a file, any file, a dialog box opens and gives me the option of "save file" or "cancel". I select "save file" and that's it. Nothing else happens.
Usually, a second dialog box will open where I get to select the destination for the file but this box doesn't appear. I tried to download files from team viewer, Skype, google earth, and windows messenger, same results every time. First box opens, then nothing. Can someone help me please? I was having technical difficulties due to my snooping around with settings I had no business snooping around with, so I contacted someone online (a computer savvy friend) who asked me to install team-viewer to initiate remote assistance so he could see what the problem was, this is where I first noticed I wasn't able to download files. After numerous attempt, I was still unable, no matter what, to download Team-Viewer Now since this mishap, I have been unable to download any files. I tried a few different files, from different websites, including Skype, Team-Viewer, Google Earth, and more...
This is what happens, I'll click the download link, a dialog box appears that gives me the option to "save file" or "cancel". I click save file, and that's it. Nothing happens.
Usually, a second box would open where I would select the destination for the saved file but this box doesn't appear. Like I said, I've tried this with Skype, Teamviewer, and Google Earth, same result every time. I click save file, and that's it.

I can't download any files or forms etc. from webpages. It tells me it is downloading tempoary files and when done i hear a click sound and then nothing comes up. Other times i will get a box that says that i need to save the file and then it says that i need to show the path that it comes from.Do i need to go into internet options and change the security? If so how do i do it? We have trend micro/pop up stopper installed as well as norton. I think it mat affect this?

Answer:Cannot download files/forms from websites

Which OS are you using?

You could just to test turn off your popup blocker, but do make sure you are on a reputable webpage for downloads. Does your Norton version also have a popup blocker?

not 100% sure what your getting at here, so could you either post a screenshot of that box?

Normally two ways to save files [1] the save popup box will have Open Save Cancel or [2] if you right click and Save As the box appears it asks you a location to save to, which you can choose any location to save to.. just make sure you remember it.

hi
my son was on the internet on his IBM Thinkpad when numerous pop ups flashed up on the screen.

since then the program/document files on the c drive were all hidden, and we have been unable to get onto the internet.
i have managed to find the document files, but still no internet, and we are unable to access safe mode, or safe mode with networking.

when you try to go into safemode or safe mode with networking you get message saying a problem has been detected
you then have the option to go to the 3 safe mode types again. however this appears to be a never ending circle of error message, and back to this page!
the computer will start normally

any help will be most appreciated

Using Windows 7, I can't get IE11 to download anything except in safe-mode with networking, where everything works fine. Have run multiple virus scans, malware scans, esset scan, and ADW scan, but problem persists. Now I've run Farbar Recovery tool--FRST--scan, but have no idea what to do with the results and certainly don't want to proceed with anything until I have guidance. Not even sure if I should post those results as far as privacy, so will await some guidance. It seems to have found quite a bit of problems.

I'm looking for a website downloading program that specifically downloads certain files like JPEG's or mpeg's. I tried a few programs from download.com, but they were useless went all over the webpage looking for all kinds of files of the jpg type.

I am specifically looking for a program that will download all jpg's from ONE PAGE. That means only the link that I give it, I don't want the program to go from one page then go to another page that the one page linked to and download those pictures also.

Answer:what's a good program to download files off websites?

Many of the programs you mention allow you to set the search depth, set it to 0 or 1, and it'll be restricted to the page you're on.

Hi I've been struggling to remove some kind of virus from my computer. It redirects browser windows and won't let me download or update any malware removal tools. I used my laptop to download malwarebytes (not up to date b/c of update issue) and ran it but got no threats. Since the problem continued, I ran malware bytes in safe mode. It found 4 threats and I deleted these. Afterwards the problem remained and I now cannot enter safe mode.

I also tried booting from an AVG recovery CD, scanned and found one threat, deleted, problem remains. I can get into windows explorer but it will no let me edit All Users/Application Data.

Hi

About to give up and buy new PC but have too many kid pics on current PC. Have HP Pavilion with windows 7. Issue appeared to begin with explorer vs Chrome issue. Added Chrome and had issues opening files or downloading anything. Had to delete one and add it back. Progressed to losing functionality of most games and applications but could navigate to pics and the basics. Firewall can not be turned on and not getting windows updates. Lost admin functionality and now can only be on PC as guest. Never set up admin password. PC won't let me boot up in safe mode either. Restart hit F8 and won't turn on. If I dont hit F8 it will turn on. Can get to internet now but everything else in guest mode so no pics. Can't troubleshoot much at all with no admin rights. PC didn't come with CDs and all preloaded. Did get a new monitor around when issues came about and switched internet provider.. Help!

Ok, here's my trouble..I am running in safe mode, when I am in norm mode system locks up fairly quickly after I try to access any program especially IE. I have tried to download and install Stopzilla and get a message telling me system admin has policies set into place preventing install. I am running XP home on a HP pavillion. So I have a couple of issues going on. I have ran Spy-bot and AVG. Spy-bot is clean but I do have a txt. file for AVG showing alot of not tested files and also have ran hijackthis, which at my level of experience I can't interpet the data due to lack of knowlege. I did notice from reading another post that I need to change the program name for(hijackthis). Is it to late, do I need to uninstall and rename it when reinstalling?

first of all, I'm using my Linux OS to access this forum bcuz my windows vista home edition is totally trashed due to the vista antivirus 2012 virus. I can't even get into safe mode. I did get rid of it once using safe mode with command prompt about 3 weeks ago and now it's back with a vengence. So if I'm expected to use a windows .exe file to try a fix, I'm not even sure I can put it on a flash drive from here since I'm not very adept at Linux. So far I haven't been able to use any of the apps that I've downloaded for windows on Linux. I've tried tweaking the settings to accept them but have been unsuccessful.

Hello everyone,

I've just built my first PC?a task that took me longer than I expected?and I'm having a few problems. Everything has been put together correctly, Windows Vista is installed and running, but after I adjusted the screen resolution , the screen blacked out to an error message: "Analogue out of range." I'm guessing I've adjusted the resolution too high, but I can't figure out a way to readjust it. I've pressed F8 at the login screen, get to the safe boot screen, but can't use the arrow keys on my keyboard to start it. I just end up going into normal mode and a blackened screen?what can I do to fix this?

Here's my Specs:

Having caught a virus, and tried to uninstall it, I need to restart in Safe Mode, but when I try using f8, the screen locks with 'restart Windows normally' highlighted, but the machine will not accept keyboard input. It won't even take the 'Enter' keystroke to open Windows normally. I have to restart again and not press f8.If anyone has any ideas what I can do about this I'd be most grateful, thanks.

Answer:Can't access safe mode

As you can boot into normal mode you can force it to start in Safe Mode by clicking on Start, clicking on Run and type MSCONFIG. Click Ok and go to the Boot.ini tab. Tick the /Safeboot tick box, click the Apply button, click Ok and then choose to restart teh computer. It will then boot to safe mode. Remember that once you've finished being in safe mode you will need to untick the /Safeboot box. HTH

As the title suggests, I'm unable to access Safe Mode by pressing F8 on the startup. Instead, an error message is displayed briefly, and the system reboots itself again.

I've had some problems with my PC recently and I'm wondering whether scanning the system in Safe Mode may uncover something I am currently unable to find.

In the last couple of years, we've had some problems with viruses etc. and I'm guessing they may have had some effect on the registry or something, possibly? I've also had a tamper with it myself, deleting certain values while following a guide I found online.

I'd imagine this may be a rather common occurance among many PC users, so I'm hoping to find some other suggestions and ideas for me to try...

Thank you for your help, guys. It's very much appreciated.

Hi guys, nothing on my PC is working I can surf the net via Firefox and that is literally about it.
The windows search bar, while clicking inside doesn't allow me to search so that doesn't work.
When in the start menu and pressing settings the screen comes up as if it wants to load and then the windows disappears.
I CAN access control panel and as soon as I go to 'system restore'it does nothing.
I shift+restart and my 'safe mode'is just a blank blue screen with no settings what so ever!
Malwarebytes brings up nothing.
Windows defender finds nothing.
This is a virus... Or something I just find it ironic how whichever setting I try to access in order to sort this the computer is unresponsive!
This all started the other night when I allowed a friend of mine to plug his mp3 player in to my PC which I have a strong feeling was riddled with virus and malware.
How can I beat this? I cannot lose my stuff.
Please help, I can't give you any information because my PC simply will not perform the tasks, however there are previous threads and topics by me which contain all the info about my PC and spec if you look on my profile.
Any more info please ask!

I recently cleaned Backdoor.Trojan from my daughter's notebook. Since Symantec AntiVirus wasn't able to fix the problem (it was found but "Left alone" on the bootup scan), I tried MalwareBytes and then SuperAntispyware which finally removed the offending .dll. After that fix, the only problem after bootup was an error message that the removed .dll could not be found. I ran Hijack This, found the registry entry for the .dll and deleted it. During a normal bootup, there are no more virus warnings or error messages.During all the installs and reboots, I had tried booting into Safe Mode with the intention of going into Regedit to search for references to the .dll file. The Safe Mode desktop came up, complete with Taskbar and program icons. Clicking on the Start button did not open the Start Menu. Double-clicking a shortcut didn't open a program. Right-clicking a shortcut also did nothing. The only thing that worked was Task Manager from which I was able to open a command prompt or reboot. I gave up on Safe Mode and did the fix with SuperAntispyware under a normal bootup. Since the fix, Safe Mode still does not allow access to the Start Menu or programs.I don't know if the Safe Mode failure is a result of the trojan or if it is unrelated. Removed Norton and after unticking the Norton start up in msconfig my system will only load in safe mode.the restore point now will not restore either and also bring me to safe mode.I need to get to my drive image backup programme folder to retstore but in safe mode the screen resolution does not show all the programmes on the desk top. Also I can not now change the screen resolution to get the full screen image. Does any one have any solutions?Windows ME

Answer:How can I access in safe mode

Because safe mode loads up a set of minimal drivers you probably won't be able to get the screen rez above 800 x 600. Can you not get to your folder by going through your c drive?

My second PC is a Fujitsu Scaleo P. running XP. Closed down as normal but will not start. It gets to a window which says it was not closed down properly(it was), says to use the up and down arrows to access Safe Mode etc. Trouble is the arrows are not working. Tried a different keyboard but it was no different.Inserted makers recovery disc to try a repair but it is ignored and the PC still goes to the same window and keeps cycling. I can access the boot menu through F11, but can't get any further.Any help very welcome.

Hey guys, back with another issue, this time with Windows XP.First off its a HP Pavilion a1240n. Dont know specs right off the bat but heres the issue anyway. Im working on this computer for a friend. Its consumed in malware/spyware (the usual issue I have to fix lol). Im able to log in normally but when I try accessing safe mode, itll get down to mup.dll (i think thats the file name) and itll auto restart. Now heres the odd part. When pressing F8, I selected "Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure", chose the OS (XP Media Center Edition), pressed F8 quickly afterwards before XP loaded for the menu again and chose safe mode. Once that was done, safe mode loaded just fine.I told ya it was odd, didnt I?Now help me figure out why I cant access safe mode the usual way instead of tweaking around to get into it. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer:Can't access safe mode :O

For a computer loaded with malware, you need to go here:http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.htmlMeantime, I think you won't be able to follow the instructions there until you can get it bootable. So try a "boot time av cd". Google that phrase and you will see a lot of good choices from Avira and some other trusted sources.

i am working on a dell inspiron 1750 but cant seen to get into safe mode i pressed F8 key but i think i might be another conbination of keys does anyone know how i can get in Safe Mode?

Answer:Cant Access Safe Mode!

Hiya pal, if F8 isn't working for you try this.

Close all open programs
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.

When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

I'm working on the family computer running Windows XP SP3 which appears to be horrible bogged down with viruses. So much so that when I simply tried reinstalling avg the next time I rebooted the computer I found myself unable to do anything other than log in. From that point the system freezes.

I've been trying to get into safe mode since then, holding down f5 or f8 at startup brings me to the boot selection screen but if I select anything other than Start Windows Normally it will just restart and bring me back to the same screen. I've also been unable to get into msconfig from windows.

Any tricks to help would be greatly appreciated, I really don't want to do a system restore before I'm at least able to get the files off the hard drive (family pictures, etc.)

I was recently on this forum working through a issue it was closed.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/506957/computer-very-slow-on-startup/

I was recently following the advice left me at the end of the forum as my computer was acting funny and it kept comming up with virus hits.  I was running a avast virus scan.  Following the scan It was recommended a boot sector scan so I let it do its thing. I had done this before without any issues.  I think this made it worse as now my desktop has been reset and I cannot get anything to run correctly except in safe mode.  I do and did not want run restore as my restore points were corrupted making the situation worse.  I think I may have made it worse by following the advise of advast and am not sure if I am still infected or something else is wrong with my machine.  I am not sure where to go from here and any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Again thanks for every thing.

Hello, I am running xp sp3 on a SATA HD, with Norton 360, and my system would get to the desktop, but then I would not be able to access anything, basically locked-up other than being able to move the mouse. Sometimes it would lock-up after I entered my login password. Sometimes it would show all the shortcut icons on the taskbar, sometimes it wouldn't get that far, just showing the desktop shortcut icons.

This would happen in the past when I would be very low on HD space, and seemingly coinciding with a windows update. This is mere speculation, but every time I would finally get windows running, after numerous restarts, it would never fail that I would have windows updates needing to be installed. However, this time I have plenty of HD space, and I still couldn't get windows running after many, many restarts.

After replacing the hal.dll file through safe mode, and while trying to boot up normally, now there was just a black screen (no cursor) instead of the windows logo loading screen.

After replacing the boot.ini file also through safe mode, I am now not able to access my system through safe mode either. In dos using safe mode, and after it scanning all the drivers, it just restarts every time now.

I brought my HD from home to work, and hooked it up as a secondary HD and I am still able to access the drive fully, accept in the documents and settings folder where I don't have permission.

I tried running sfc on my HD (as a secondary drive here at work), but it says I hav... Read more

I have some nasty virus. My computer rebooted after a serious error and after I could not start IE nor could I run virus scan (CA security). I tried several system restore points but each time the computer was not able to restore. I tried to open in safe mode but after using F8 on reboot my arrow keys would not work to select safe mode and the boot continued with normal startup. I went into cmd and selected safe mode startup but once again my arrow keys wouldn't work to select safe mode (or anything other than normal which is highlighted on page). Since I selected safe startup in cmd and I cannot choose safe startup on the boot page my computer is in a loop of constantly trying to bootup. Any suggestions?

Been asked to look at Father-in-Laws little desktop - a little HP Compaq 8000 Elite - and I'm a bit stuck so would appreciate some help.  It's running XP Pro SP3.

The initial fault was "no internet access" and this apparently occured while updating his McAfee subscription.  I wasn't aware he even had that - I know the machine originally had AVG Free and last time I looked at it was running MSE

I saw a reference to Adobe in his McAfee licence so I'm guessing it's been bundled with some Adobe product he's downloaded (he into still photography).

I reset IE8 (it had a bunch of toolbars) and internet access is OK now.  However I've tried McAfee, AVG Free and MSE and none will run.

The other thing that concerns me is that I can't access safe mode.  I think (but could be missing something here) there's only one account , Administrator. It has a fairly simple password but doesn't work (and neither does blank) in safe mode.

Help please!

Hi, hope you can help. My level is now that of a fairly advanced user. A friend had just gone online using broadband - with NO virus checker & NO firewall (aargh!). He phoned, saying his home page had been hijacked by a porn site, and he had suddenly become worried (!). So I went round, managed to delete (through Add/Remove Progs) stuff that was hijacking home page (also checked Internet options). He's using XP Pro. Then I downloaded Sygate personal firewall, then small anti-virus prog from Major Geeks. He wanted Kazaa as well, so got only version I could find (2.1). Then went to Trend pccillin & downloaded trial version, because it's always been fine as far as I've found. HELP! Rebooted. Got to WinXP start page, desktop appeared, Kazaa appeared in Systray (even tho I'd set it not to be launched at startup), pccillin flash screen appeared, then hourglass symbol. Splash screen went down to taskbar. Hourglass over task bar, won't let me access anything at all, anywhere. Cntrl/alt/del won't work. Can't access safe mode booting up - tried F8, F5, Esc, Del. He hasn't got XP disk cos already installed when he bought pc. I feel so embarrassed. Any advice, pls?
Cheers

Answer:can't access safe mode in xp pro

well he should have got the OEM disk even if it came pre-installed.

If your that desperate, try hitting the reset button whilst its booting up. that will give you the boot menu once it restarts. Once you have got in it may be an idea to use system restore, if he had it running.

A couple of nights ago Windows requested to do some updates. It had 2/3 it automatically picked but I decided to look at the optional updates it recommended but didn't select. I went ahead and asked to install all of them. After restarting and rebooting computer since then my computer hangs/gets stuck on "Starting Windows". It's not a freeze I guess as the logo is still animated whilst booting but I've had it like that for 2 hours without success. I searched the issue up on google and it seems very common after windows updates (never happened to me before however) but every fix/solution suggested seem to vary drastically between HDD Fault/Motherboard dying/You downloaded something naughty etc, etc.

I can't make any progress on many of these "solutions" though. When pushing F8 upon boot and then selecting "Repair my computer" the screen will turn black and I will only be able to see a low quality cursor. The other route to many solutions was via safe mode but that doesn't load either anymore. I booted from safe mode successfully once, restored from a previous point on the 12th of February (maybe the last boot before the updates) and stupidly let windows shutdown and install the same updates again, I think. Since then it also gets stuck loading files.

Running Windows 7 Professional Edition

Any help is appreciated!

Hi there Dougy282,

Do you have your Windows OS CD by any chance? If so, I recommend performing a "REPAIR-INSTALL" and see if that resolves this. You would definitely need your legitimate copy of Windows OS CD though.

Hope everything works out well for you and feel free to ask more questions, thank you.

Hello, my computer, a Lenovo Idea pad P580 running on Windows 7, is 5 weeks old and yesterday I was using Microsoft Word to edit a document and Word suddenly crashed. So I closed it, but then the cursor started spinning and I could not access anything on my computer so I rebooted and it started up but then just trying to open Microsoft Word caused the cursor to keep spinning again and I could not access anything. So I again rebooted and this time it was spinning from the beginning. So I again rebooted and turned it on in safe mode and everything was fine. Then turned it off and left it off overnight. In the morning I tried to boot in normal mode and it did boot but it was again spinning and I could not access anything. So I again rebooted in safe mode and I can use my computer fine. Can someone please help me get my computer up and running again in normal mode?

And also, this is unrelated, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do to make the scroll bar stop moving on its own? Every time I scroll down a page it seems to lock the scroll bar and so when I move the cursor away from the scroll bar, the scroll bar still moves and I cannot click any links or anything on that webpage.

Okay thank you very much for your help!!

My Dell XPS studio 13 laptop with Vista Home Premium keeps crashing every time I boot up and I cannot access safe mode. The problem started when I tried to install Alcohol 120 corporate edition. Vista flashed a warning that the driver was not digitally signed but I went ahead and installed it. A few seconds later the laptop crashed and I got a BSOD saying that it was dumping physical memory. It automatically rebooted and again crashed at login. I treid to get into safe mode but I keep getting a BSOD at login and cannot get into safe mode. This happened about 15 times. I switched off everything, took out the battery, left it for an hour and tried booting again. I got as far as the desktop and vista says it is installing device driver and then crashes again.
Short of reinstalling is there any other way that I can get into vista?

Hi guys
Is it possible to gain wireless internet access via a usb modem while in safe mode with networking. I have tried to do this with windows xp, vista and 7 with no success. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:wireless access in safe mode?

Thats because the modem drivers are not getting loaded in safe mode. Safe mode is just that, safe mode without the drivers being loaded so that the operating system can be worked on or debugged. I doubt you can force an app to start in safe mode, unless its something required by the OS. Also, it would probably be ill advised to try force a 3rd party service to start in safe mode, there would be dependant services that aren't started as well as other issues.

Hi, I'm running XP Home, SP2, on a Maxdata computer. Without adding new hard or software this problem arrived. I fire up the PC and the XP screen with progress bar appears briefly followed by "sorry windows didn't start normally, please choose an option below" message. The keyboard is unresponsive so I can't select safe mode or any other option. Pressing F8 on starting does not produce the advanced start options page. The keyboard works on another computer and I have tried a known good keyboard in the PS2 port and another known good USB keyboard. Cannot boot from the Windows CD as the first message is "press any key to continue..." and the keyboard is unresponsive.I have a bootable Linux Puppy disc and the keyboard works with that but I am not familiar with Linux so I don't know where to go from there. Would be grateful for any help with this.

Hello friends! I have a problem recently. My System crashed while my Anti-Virus(ESET SMART SECURITY) was being updated. So I restarted the system and after that, I get an error message telling that it stopped working and it fails to uninstall. So I contacted my Anti-Virus company and they gave me a program which will uninstall the Anti-Virus, but I have to access my safe mode to uninstall the program. They also told me that I have to press F8 to access it. I did as they said to me and I selected Safe mode from the options but here is where the problem starts! The drivers load and when it comes to one driver, the computer screen goes black and then it restarts again.....! That's all.......when it restarts, it will then load windows......! The problem is that whenever I access the safe mode, my computer restarts and will not enter safe mode! How can I solve the problem? Please help me. P.S.: I also read many posts in here and I came to know that many are stuck in the continuous reboot of their computer. I don't want my computer to have any problems like that.

i followed instructions for removing winfixer (18610 including downloading Hijack This and Vundo) but when i rebooted in safe mode, my computer would only go to the black screen with "Safe Mode" in each corner, no further. i couldn't get to Vundo in order to run it, nor could i use Hijack This (so no log). i tried to reboot, but unfortunately used msconfig to set safe mode so it reboots still in Safe Mode and only up to the black screen.

when it starts, there is a pop up that begins with something like Running in Safe Mode and Yes and No buttons at the bottom but it shuts down before i can click on it or read the middle. now what? how do i undo (mcsonfig) Safe Mode and how do i get past the black screen?

i am using my kids' computer but urgently need mine for work. i will be highly grateful for your help.

If you need to get access to your PC I suggest building the UBCD4Win which will give you full read/write access to your PC allowing you to remove any malware. To build you will need your WinXP installation CD with SP1 or SP2 integrated or use the I386 which was part of the preinstall again SP1 or SP2 will need to be integrated.

Hi

I've just joined this forum, and am really hoping that some kind soul out there will be able to help me!

Ever since yesterday evening, I have only been able to access the internet if I boot into safe mode (with networking support). The weird thing is, if I am NOT in safe mode, I can still access email using Outlook and if I run a ping command from a CMD prompt that also seems fine. But, browsing the internet using IE, Firefox or Netscape does not seem to be possible.

Even trying to open up my Speedtouch router, at http://192.168.1.254/, does not seem to be possible.

I also have Windows vista, on another partition, and access to the internet through this seems to be working without any problems.

I am guessing that I am the victim of some spyware or other malicious software. I have just run Hijackthis, and hope that somebody will be able to decypher it and tell me how to fix the problem!

Thanks in advance,

Ackoman

Last week I problems with a number of trojans etc, solved using advice from this site (used tdsskiller). The PC was OK for a couple of days but now I have BSOD and stop error 7E, searched for info on this but advice is mainly to do with drivers and removing any new hardware or software (none have been added for months). Initially I could access safe mode with command prompt only but now I can't access any, also tried last known good config. Booted from XP cd and selected repair which loaded Recovery Console, not really sure how to use this but when I tried some simple commands such as chkdsk and dir I get a message "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems". Not sure what to try next should I reinstall XP or is it likely to be a HD failure?

Your error message indicates a problem with either the NTFS file system or the hard drive, IMO.

A problem with either seems likely to result in that error message, since chkdsk /r addresses both.

I would move any valued files from that drive...then run Dell Diagnostics on the hard drive.

What are you saying? You caught a virus? What anti-virus program is running on your computer now? Is it current? If that computer won't start, then STEP ONE would be to run a virus scan on that drive. Do you have another working computer with UP TO DATE anti-virus software, and a USB to SATA/IDE adapter? Connect the drive (as an external drive) to the working computer and scan it. If this sounds like Chinese then you might need to find a repair tech.

Hi!

I'm few days after reinstalling Windows - reason: failure at boot.
Today I installed Visual Studio, Xamarin and FPGA tools from Altera and Xilinx.
After installation I created restore point and reboot... what happened now?
Look:

I tried to use Safe mode, system restore from restore point (tried two) and attempt to use bcdedit - all what I found at MS support.
Only BCDEDIT I try to use by command prompt - if is possible to reach it.

Can anyone tell me how to get back Windows to work?
BSOD message is that INFO is wrong, not system, I found also that registry items are wrong - it must to go repair...
Please help me without reinstalling Windows...
Thank you very much!
Miro

Answer:Again BSOD without Safe Mode access - can anybody help?

This BSOD is caused by a severe Registry error.

When the SYSTEM hive gets corrupted, it causes this BSOD. Please refer to this MS link for possible fixes, including Restoring Windows 10.

You might need to reset the PC from a clean slate, which means resetting Windows 10 and erasing all files, starting fresh and clean.

Win 8 Pro..I am trying to fix an error that is causing my desktop to randomlly reboot.

I wanted to run chkdsk from safe mode, however, tapping f8 doesn't work for me.

Tried to restore a backup and paragon merged all the drives into one file and says the structure is different and I may lose data.

Win 8 will not let me stop chkdsk with any key press. Kind of stumped what to do next. TIA

Answer:Can't access Safe Mode or run chkdsk

To get the Admin account to show on the Welcom Screen, download TweakUI from Microsoft.

There is a section for accounts and you can show/hide any of them.

I'm having a repeat problem in closing out from Safe Mode in Xp Home Edition. No problem in getting in and using diagnostics in Safe Mode but find that much enlarged size of all data boxes obscure the "Run" box and prevent me from entering the Systems Configuration Utility to exit from Safe Mode !! Click & Drag does not work to uncover the box I need. Have had to resort to System Restore which is the only visible data available on screen but suppose this would negate any diagnostic changes I've made while in Safe Mode ? Guess I'm missing something obvious but help is much appreciated for this relative newbie ?? Thanks.

Answer:Unable To Re-access "run" Box From Safe Mode In Xp

You can't change the resoultion in safe mode because you are not using
your regular video driver, and resolution info is stored in the
registry based upon the video card/driver being used. Safe Mode uses
a 16-it VGA driver.

You can try this and see if it will work on XP.

Hit the Alt key, RELEASE the Alt-Key (Alt-Space together also works), and then press the down
arrow. You are presented with a menu of Close or Move. Simply press
the Enter key. Notice that the mouse pointer jumps to the middle of
the title bar and is now a four headed arrow. At this point you can
move the window around with the cursor keys. Just click the mouse or
hit enter to put the cursor back to normal.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have been getting the blue screen of death. I believe it is due to a virus corrupting my display drivers.

I believe I can fix it fairly easily if I can access Safe Mode, but upon pushing F8 during bootup, it only gives me a list of drives to boot from, and no option to access safe mode.

I have multiple computers, and to the best of my knowledge I have never needed to use safe mode on this particular computer, so I have never realised this was the case before. I'm sure it is something simple, can anyone be of help please?

Answer:[SOLVED] Cannot access Safe Mode

hi, generally all pcs have f8 as their safe mode but some companies like a different button . Maybe if you could try f5, or f1, that should definitely work, if not then you will have to do them one by one.

One thing to take into account, is that if the BSOD is severe then safemode cannot fix this because it will need some of the files to load your xp i.e. .sys.

When activating advance boot options, you may want to give Las known good configuration a tap.

Recovering from a worm.win32.netbooster infection.

After deleting numerous registry keys and unregistering dll files per removal instructions, everything seems to be normal.

The only problem remaining is I can't access the net unless I am logged in as administrator or the other user account (which has admin rights), after booting in the safe mode (F8).
IE and Firefox both work.

If I login after a regular restart, there is no internet access using IE or Firefox.

Seems simple to fix but I don't see anything wrong.

Please help!!

Hi,
You should not delete any Registry Keys, because any mistake can cause your computer to act abnormal. Can you tell me what were the registry keys you removed and why?

Dear Computer Hope:My Toshiba Satellite laptop (2006) operates on XP- with SP3, has updated and current Anti Virus and Firewall (Avanquest System Suite 9) and Super Anti Spy Ware (payware).  Everything is up to date with recent scans performed yesterday.Everything was OK till several hours ago when everything started working so slow.  I was on my browser MSN and noticed this morning the old looking page suddenly converted to the much touted new look.  A pain in the **** but I get used to it.  So I turned my computer off and restarted and that is when the problems started. The safe mode page and all the other listings came up, first tried was the regular windows mode and that did not work.  Noticed a flash of blue with writing on it so I did the F8 and turned off the automatic restart switch so I could read the message.I am corresponding with you on another computer.Blue Screen Message....A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.  If this screen appears again, follow these steps:Disable or uninstall any anti virus, disk defrag or back up utilities.  Check your hard drive configuration and check for an updated drivers.  Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.Tech info    0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8f7EF160, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)Unfortunately, I can... Answer:Safe Mode access does not work

From MSDN :Quote0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

I have a lab of computers all running Windows XP Pro sp2, hooked up to a domain. Is there a way to restrict safe mode access to only administrators (or only local accounts)? I don't want any of the limited user domain accounts to be able to log onto safe mode, as it allows them to circumvent certain restrictions that I need to have in place.

Is this possible at all, and if not, is there some sort of work around I could use?

Answer:Restricting Safe Mode Access

For this you would need administrative privileges and if these computers are on a network you might not be able to accomplish this but I would suggest contacting the IT department of the company or organization that you work for and have them do the necessary work.

Answer:Access Safe Mode & Boot from CD

Hi,Here is link to HP support document on how to enter safe mode: https://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c03439317 To boot from CD you need to change the boot order so that the DVD drive is before the Hard drive. Press ESC when computer starts and there will be the option for boot order. Or enter the Bios by pressing ESC at startup and here there will be the option to change boot order. When booting you will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD. Hope it helps,David
