Am I Infected?: Cannot Update Windows & Firewall Not Working (Error 0x6D9)

Question: Am I Infected?: Cannot Update Windows & Firewall Not Working (Error 0x6D9)

Hi, I originally posted this in the standard 'Windows 7 Help' section and was advised to post it here, so sorry for duplicate topics.
I have previously run virus detection software and it does not appear to have fixed any of these problems, but I will, of course, happily try again if it is deemed the best option with recommended software.

I was advised to include the following information...PC Model: Acer Aspire M3910Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
I have also attached a transcript of the DxDiag Diagnostic readout in the hope that it will help.
Problems: I cannot run Windows Updater or switch on Windows Firewall. On a possibly related note, Windows .NET framework refuses to install or work properly on my PC. I understand these are common issues with Malware infection.
Windows Updater: When I attempt to check for updates the updater simply says that the "service is not running" I have been unable to turn the service on by any method I have tried. Whenever I run the inbuilt troubleshooter and recommended Microsoft Fixit files, they merely say they have either fixed the problem or not detected the problem. Sadly, this isn't the case as the problem has not been resolved at all. When I ran the troubleshooter recently, it provided a report which I have attached as a .pdf in the hope it may help lead to a solution.
Windows Firewall: The Firewall says is is 'Not running reccommended settings' and will not restore those recommended settings if I ever click the button to 'fix' the issue. If I open 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' the program merely states "there was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in. The Windows Firewall with advanced security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error Code: 0x6D9

I have seen that these issues have been solved on this forum before without system resets and hope such a solution is possible for my computer.
Thanks for your time,
Joel.

Preferred Solution: Am I Infected?: Cannot Update Windows & Firewall Not Working (Error 0x6D9)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Am I Infected?: Cannot Update Windows & Firewall Not Working (Error 0x6D9)

Sorry, here's the DxDiag readout - I forgot to attach it like an idiot.

Hi, I'm running Windows 7 64-bit (I think) and I cannot run Windows Updater or switch on Windows Firewall. On a possibly related note, Windows .NET framework refuses to install or work properly on my PC.

Thanks for your time,
Joel.

Answer:Help?: Cannot Update Windows & Firewall Not Working (Error 0x6D9)

First of all, welcome to BC !

The firewall and updater problems are very common symptoms of malware infection. Your best bet is to post this problem in the 'Am I infected?' section of BC and get any question of malware resolved before going looking for other possible solutions.

When you post there, include the make and model of your computer, as well as your operating system. If it is self-built, then list the main specs. And be patient !  These people are busy !  And if you are asked to do something which you don't understand, post back to them for clarification.

Hello!

I just did a fresh clean install of Windows 10. I was just installing all my programs back and then suddenly I get an error saying Windows Firewall is not working. In detail it says;

The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code: 0x6D9.

My options are to use "recommended settings" but it does not work.

Everything that I have search on the internet gives me solutions to other previous versions of windows and nothing on this error with Windows 10!

I have not installed any additional virus software, i'm just using whatever windows 10 provides me.

Please help, I don't want to have to do yet another clean install!

Thank you

It took me some time to notice this error and other than it being annoying to me it's not really effecting my PC much. The picture below is the error that shows. What I have done...

Tried starting the service manually a number of different ways and the service will seem to start for a moment then stop.
When I go to the Windows Firewall settings an click Use Recommended Settings. It doesn't seem to actually do anything. I'm assuming it tries to start the service and then stops.
There are no types of viruses, root-kits, malware, etc on the PC.
Ran the SFC with no issues.

What I think happened is that I had Bitdefender Total Security on my system. I decided I didn't want to renew so I uninstalled it, but instead of using their uninstaller I used Revo Uninstall Pro to do it because I always trace any programs I install with it. I think I may have gotten to click happy and maybe fudged something up Windows uses for its firewall. But the issue could of always been there I just never noticed because I used Bitdefender's firewall.

Can anyone assist?

Answer:0x6D9 Windows Firewall error

Sure. Download the .bat file I attached and run it as Administratior.

After if finishes running open the run box (windows key +r) and type "services.msc" hit ok.

Find Windows Firewall in the list right click on it and chose properies and make sure the startup type is automatic. If it's stopped then click start and then ok.

Now from the run box type "msconfig" under the services tab find Windows Firewall make sure it's checked then click apply and ok and exit without a restart.

Now Windows firewall should be in working order.

Hello everyone,
My firewall doesn't start anymore. The problem started after removing the damn iStartSurf (virus or whatever threat that is). I used adwcleaner_3.310.exe ( What is adwcleaner_3.310.exe ? | System Explorer ) that is the one that, I suppose, really removed the problem and then Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just in case. This last didn't find anything as I was expecting. (these steps are part of a guide for removing iStartSurf)

After rebooting, because adwcleaner finished its task, installing the anti-malware, while scanning with the latter I saw (not sure it wasn't already there since the log in) the control center complaining about the firewall off.
I thought because of the scanning. At the end of the scan I couldn't turn the firewall on anyway.

I have followed a lot of guides and used different "fixing tools"... but nothing.

---------------------
My Configuration:
windows 8.1
Avira antivir
standard windows firewall
removed malwarebytes
removed adwcleaner
------------------------

Error reported:
- If I try to start the firewall from servises.msc it give me the error code 13
- If I try to open the advanced settings of the firewall from the control panel I get the error code 0x6D9
I don't know anymore what to do.
Guys help me, please!

Hello,

I have a problem that other users have already described here (and been able to remedy with assistance):  the Windows Firewall on my laptop does not work any more -- I cannot configure it through the control panel, and when I try to open it, it shows the message:

"The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer that you are managing [obviously, that is not possible].  Error code: 0x6D9."

My operating system is Windows 7, 64bit version.  All recent Windows updates are installed.  I have Malwarebytes installed and ran a scan recently, with no results except for one tracking cookie.  I also have Sophos Antivirus installed, which also did not find anything when I ran a scan.

Perhaps somebody could be so generous and tell me what I could do about this?

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi!
Our laptop, which my mother and brother use the most, seems to be infected, but I don't know with what. When someone tries to surf the net and uses a search engine, a window pops up and redirects them to another website. The thing is, we came back from vacation last Wednesday and we had brought the laptop along. I have not used it since we came back, but my little brother has. On Friday morning my mother reports that there is a virus that causes the websites to redirect and the peace in the house hasn't been the same since. My brother can not recall which websites he visited and I couldn't check because a CCleaner scan was preformed and the registry was cleared as well. When I checked the Windows Firewall, it was turned off. I tried to turn it on, but when I click the 'Use recommend settings' button nothing happened. I opened the Window Firewall with Advance Security but got an error that the security snap-in failed to open (error code ox6d9). I will post a screenshot of this below the dds.

I have Mcaffe Version 8.8 installed on the laptop. When I try to open the console, I get an error that the program is not allowed to login because of a remote computer called '.' wont let login. Then after that I get an error that ordinal 1112 cannot be located in the dll WSOCK32.dll. After these errors, the console opens but I can't preform any scans. I will post screen shots of the errors below the dds.

I have tried to reinstall the antivirus, but it did not work. I have encount... Read more

Windows 7
Lenovo Y580 2011 model
Recently installed/swapped out for a new SSD and spent the past few days installing windows updates and other programs I needed.

It was only until today did I bother /have a need to access my windows firewall settings. Upon opening Windows firewall with Advanced Security window I am met with a:

There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Adv security snap in  /  the snap in failed to load.

I ran a few quick scans with Malwarebytes Anti malware but those were all PUP files (still had them removed, then restart but same issue)
since I only checked today I can't tell how long this has been an issue.

am I infected? should I restore my computer to a early point before some of the windows security updates?

I'm so surprised.

Answer:Trouble accessing Windows Firewall Error Code: 0x6D9

Hello, I highly doubt you are infected. Windows Firewall is causing the issue, to solve this problem I recommend downloading Windows Repair and following my steps.

Step 1. Install the program

Step 2. Drain all the power in your computer by unplugging all cords and taking out the battery. After that keep pressing the power button a few times like you are turning it on to drain the power left in your computer.

Step 3. Put the battery back in and the power cord (if you need one) and turn on your computer.

Step 4. Run Windows Repair and select the Step 5 tab (Backup). Next press backup under Registry Backup. You may want to create a restore point too, which is next to it.

Step 5. Go onto the Repair tab and click Open Repairs and make sure you have Registry Permissions, File Permissions, WMI and Windows Firewall checked. When ready click Start Repairs and wait until it has finished.

Step 6. When it has finished copy the log in the Log tab and post it onto this topic.

Step 7. Wait for me to reply

Thanks Aramus

Shortly after my new laptop upgraded to Win 10 build 1607, I began to receive indications that Windows Firewall was not operational. This is the worst of a number of symptoms that started at the same time. This firewall issue, Cortana no longer works, several of the built in accessories no longer work.

When Windows FW failed I began what has turned out to be a hopeless exercise to try to fix it. There are zillions of hits on the web about this issue dating back to Win 7 all described the same way. The long and the short of my issue is error 0x6D9 when starting the FW. I've tried from the services dialog, I've tried from the Security applet in control panel. Nothing solves the problem.

So, I installed ZoneAlarm Extreme Security (which I was going to do anyway). ZA is installed and active so I went about trying to set up RDP and RDP told me it couldn't be setup because Windows Firewall wasn't running.

What is going on? Is there any help out there?

For the record, ZoneAlarm Extreme Security and Malwarebytes AntiMalware V3.0.

If there is an issue with firewall that dates back to Win 7, with the same symptoms and similar fixes (which in my case don't fix it), then we as a user community need to question what the heck Microsoft is doing. Firewall is a key component and it needs to be very robust but clearly there is something going on.

I'll be monitoring this thread daily so feel free to ply me with suggestions. The only one that I don't want to hear about i... Read more

You're welcome, CardGunner. See if this update is listed in Installed Updates

I suspect that is the update that may have restored the firewall.

Hi, I have been having issues with windows firewall and have tried quite a few things to attempt to get it working. When I go to windows firewall in control panel, the only option displayed is "update your firewall settings" with a button labeled "use recommended settings." Clicking this button locks up the window for about 15 seconds, once its able to be interacted with again, nothing has changed. Clicking on "advanced settings" on the left takes me to the "windows firewall with advanced security screen," this is where it displays the 0x6D9 error code and it mentions trying to restart the windows firewall service. It is set to automatically start in Services, but never starts and trying to manually start it gives me a message that says windows could not start it.

I have looked at a few other threads on here and have run 3 programs I found recommended in them: AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and DDS.

Any help with this would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

~Steve

Every time I try to start my firewall from the control panel, no matter what I press, I always get the same screen telling me to update my settings with a red bar on the side.

If I click on advance settings however, it opens the windows firewall with advance security screen and tell me that there was an error with snap-in and gives me the error code 0x6d9.

I have already tried starting the windows firewall service while in administrator mode but it also gives me and error 'service specific error code 5'.

I have run out of ideas.

With malwarebytes and AVG free 2013, I have removed some bad stuff from the computer, but Windows Firewall gives error code 0x6d9 when I open it to turn it on. I also am unable to download files. Firefox simply cancels the downloads. IE will not download either. Says security settings do not allow it (or such). Thoughts on remedying or seeing if anything else is on the computer? Malwarebytes shows nothing else. Thank you.

Hi, originally posted this in the 'Am I infected?' section and a helpful advisor called 'Broni' gave me a list of steps to follow to ascertain just what was wrong with my PC. After a series of programs and scans he told me I was infected with the ZeroAccess Rootkit and to post the issue here after running a program called DDS and attaching the logs DDS provided. Following is my model of PC and the problems I am experiencing, presumably as a result of this infection -

When I ran the troubleshooter recently, it provided a report which I have att... Read more

Hello and welcome.  Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.”  Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

My firewall hasn't worked for a long time, and has never been a problem. Now, however, I need to fix it. When I open the window to change settings, I can't because I get an error about 0x6D9.0x6D9
When I went to Microsoft, my PID had expired, and their page said to use a file called MicrosoftFixit.WindowsFirewall.RNP.27303904791259753.5.1.Run
Can't set windows firewall to default because of Norton 360. When I disable Norton firewall, and reboot, it still can't set firewall.
I used command prompt taskkill /IM Norton 360 /T /F to forcefully terminate Norton 360 service that didn't work.
Additional info:
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
Norton 360

Answer:Windows firewall, Norton 360, 0x6D9

First I would uninstall Norton 360. Norton 360 Removal tool

Next, run the Windows Firewall to repair tool. Windows Firewall Repair

Now reinstall Norton 360. If you get Norton free with Comcast subscription?

Here's the link. Norton Comcast Free

Norton should disable Windows Firewall during install.

When prompted, I would not install Constant Guard. It will really slow down your PC.

If you do not have Comcast and purchase Norton 360. Go to the Norton website, find your product and download. You may have to enter your license key to activate.

Hope this helps.

Ok - I'm trying to fix my friends' computer - Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 running Windows 7 32-bit

Windows firewall is off and I need to "Update Firewall Settings". When I click use recommended settings, I get a message that says it "can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424" I get the same thing when I click on "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" and "Restore Defaults"

When I click on "Advanced Settings" I get "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in" followed by it "failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error code 0x6D9."

I scanned the computer using both Avast and Microsoft Safety Scanner (full scan and took over 2 hours) - no infections or issues found

I installed all Microsoft updates and followed suggested restarts.

I ran Microsoft Fix It and I get a message that the firewall isn't running or stopped and it can't be fixed.

I have gone into services as an administrator to try and start Windows Firewall...it isn't there - not in the list of services (local)

I also used SlimDrivers to update all the drivers on the computer.

What I am not seeing is how to uninstall and reinstall Windows Firewall...any other program or hardware issue, that would seem to be the easiest solution - but I have yet to see how to do that with Windows Firewall.

I even started the computer in safe mode... Read more

My stepdad's computer is infected with a virus. AVG picks it up as a generic trojan horse and can't fully remove it. Apart from saying that system.exe is infected, Windows update was disabled and I had to enable it manually because I couldn't access it in system.exe, windows firewall is diabled and won't come back on, and Internet Explorer keeps going to ebay and other sites when links are clicked.

I've added the files generated by DDS. Thanks.

Hi Guys,

Need some help here.
Tried starting windows firewall and got this error message :"Windows firewall cant change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424"
Tried starting windows update and got this error message : "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your compter".
Tried starting windows Defender and got this message : "A problem caused this program to stop." and "The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code 0x80070424"

Never had this problem before and had gone through some materials available online. None seems applicable to my situation. Looked into the services.msc and couldn't find Background Intelligence Transfer Service, Windows Firewall or Windows Update listed there.
Didnt wanna mess around so i though i'd gather some help from here.

Have been using Advanced System Care to scan regularly, not sure if it did something to mess up my computer. Also found that under device and printers, USB composite Device under printers have a "Need Troubleshooting" status. Computer is unable to communicate with the printer, thus i am unable to print and scan documents. Not sure if all these problems stem from the same source.
Just tried scanning my computer with TDSSKILLER (nothing found), ESET smart full scan(deleted 4 files), MBAM (nothing found) and i will attach a log file by FSS.

Question: 0x6D9 error code

I need to open port 443 but when I try to open advance settings in windows firewall I get error code 0x6D9. If I try to turn on the firewall I get 0x80070424. I tried system file checker tool with no issues, but when trying to reset the firewall settings, the netsh advfirewall reset command came back with an error telling me to make sure the service is running. Please help!

Answer:0x6D9 error code

The 0x6D9 error indicates you've got some services that the firewall needs to have running that aren't running.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/unable-to-turn-on-windows-firewall-error-code/03c682a0-1ed1-482b-9324-bfd572fa7036

The 0x8007040424 error may also indicate that certain services that are needed aren't running, but it could also indicate your system is infected.
Try running the fixit tool first: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968002
See this thread for more troubleshooting steps if the fixit doesn't work.

Win7 64 bit. New, clean installation. No 3rd party security software (firewall or virus scanner).
Hi all
I've been try find a way to get my system to update with firewall on for weeks. I have trusted sites set and have run the cross-your-fingers-and-hope general fixit. I subsequently discovered firewall on, run update either from the update applet or Security
Essentials, the update process would run so far then do nothing until I switch off firewall. As soon as firewall is turned off, updates begin to download.

Hi
I was asked to fix a relative's pc  - uncle died and we need to get info and the machine running. It's now running but very poorly. I believe from the research that it is a fake HDD problem. I get action center warnings that my antivirus needs ro be turned on, firewall off, etc. I try to turn firewall on and get error messages that it wont let me. I can't do windows updates, etc.
I have run Rkill, TDSS killer, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Spybot S&D, ADWCleaner, JRT and finally Rogue Killer.
I cant tell if it is missing files or still active with malware.
I am able to run ZoneAlarm firewall but I cant update Windows. My internet is spotty and I find myself running the "troubleshoot" problems option to kick-start it.

I think that's all I can give you right now.

Hi every1. Im new to this forum site & stumbled upon it after a lot of futile online research. Anyway, here goes-I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop, Windows Vista home premium-SP1, 32-bit. A week ago my problems began. My Windows Update (as well as Windows Defender) failed to update-giving error Code-80244019. Also I was unable to access any of Microsoft or Anti-Virus web-sites to look for a solution. The problem persisted despite a number of adjustments & scans (Norton 360 v2.0, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Windows defender, Windows Malicious software Removal Tool- None were able to detect anything) & a alot of online research. At about the same time these horrible Vimax ads started appearing on every page I visited & my Laptop became considerably slower & Firefox became prone to crashing a lot. So after more online research I installed Malwarebytes-Anti Malware. I ran a Full-Scan & it showed me a number of Infections by Trojan DNS Changer & I 'Fixed' the infections using Malwarebytes- It said the prob is fixed, but they kept coming back (I also ran the scan in SAFE MODE but I didnt disable System Restore in any instance) & the problem remained. I also scanned my portable flash drives, but there was no infection there. I havent yet scanned my external HDD, so I dont know whether thats infected. Finally, frustrated , I came upon this site & I am posting my grievances. I am extremely distressed by this, as this is the first time I have failed to... Read more

My client's Win 7 64 bit desktop PC will not run"Windows Update".... Can't say when this quit working.. possibly in the last 1-2 months... I now get the red "x" and error message "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running"... when I try to start it in "services", I get "system Error 5"....

Also, the downloading using E 11 doesn't work,,, get the message "xxxxx contained a virus and was deleted".... I have scanned the PC with combofix, Malwarebytes, Rougue Killer, and others, and nothing is found. Downloads work fine with Google Chrome..

Finally, I also see "windows defender" is now missing from this system.

Not sure if any of these are related, but need to get Windows Update working again

Any suggestions on how to get Windows Update working again? This PC is out of use by my client until I get this resolved.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer~

Hello.I've recently noticed I've been having spikes in my CPU usage. I narrowed it down to ServiioService.exe, which is my DLNA server so I can watch downloaded video files on my Sony Media Box on my TV. Here are screenshots of it happening three times in Task Manager: http://i.imgur.com/kaDMa.png and here's a screenshot of Process Explorer, with normal activity on the Left hand Side, and CPU topped out at 100% on the right hand side: http://i.imgur.com/nqcH4.png. Having read stuff around the Internet, it appeared it might be because it's trying to get metadata for each file, so I unchecked every option in the Metadata tab in the Serviio Console, but I am still having issues of the CPU spiking and my computer pausing. This happens every 5-10 minutes or so and lasts around a second. It's extremely annoying, especially when I'm typing or watching a video on the computer. At Serviio, the developer told me "It might be caused by Java's garbage collection (freeing memory tht is not needed any more)." I don't know what this means, or how to fix it, so that's where I'm at with that. Before I had figured this out, however, I wondered if the CPU spikes were caused by some form of Malware. I downloaded Malwarebyes and performed a scan, but nothing was found. I tried seeing if Windows Defender would find it, but it wasn't turned on. When I tried to turn it on, I got an "error code 5" and saw that it hadn't run since July.... Read more

Greetings,

Automatic Windows update last night- Windows 7 pro. Now I keep getting messages from the action center that AV, Firewall and spyware not working in my system tray next to the wireless icon. I try to turn them on through the message and nothing happens. I am running Norton 360. When I open Norton it says it is working?

Ran Malwaresbytes scan and did not come up with anything. Ran full scan with Norton and did not come up with anything. The messages sometimes go away when I reboot.

Only started happening after the update last night!

Thanks for your help in advanced!

Cheers,

Hi,
I have been having this issue for a long time.
The windows firewall show a message about updating the firewall settings. Also, It displays a button "use recommended settings"
I click the button, but for a short period of time internet connection is perfect. Then the internet connection is lost and the message gets back. So I have to check the firewall settings every 30 min in <g class="gr_ gr_464 gr-alert gr_spell gr_disable_anim_appear

Sometimes the internet connection is stable, but there are times in which the web page takes long to show, so that is the time when I check the firewall settings and well need to press that button again.
Is this just happening to me?

Hi!
I know there are tons of messages about how to install or force install W10 but I have a different error and none of the solutions seem to work.
I'm getting error 80244019 in WindowsUupdate every time I try to look for updates. I've tried since yesterday the force command line but it does nothing. I've tried also fixing Windows Update with WUdiagnostic. It "solves" 3 or 4 errors everytime I run it but it doesn't change the 80244019 error.
How do I solve 80244019 error?
I have also tried the MediaCreationTool way but when it's going to start the installation it says that I'm trying to install a different language, not the one that uses my OS so it won't let me upgrade The only way is wiping my files and apps and I don't want that. How do I change the language of the MediaCreationTool?
Thank you
PS. It's crazy how easy was for my other PC to install it and how impossible it is with this one.

Answer:Windows Update Error 80244019 and MediaCreationTool nor working

I have the exact same problem with the mediacreationtoolx64. I live in Denmark and i use english as language on my windows 7 pro. But instead of just checking the language used MS has decided to do some ber secret magic trick that i cannot seem to escape so that it wants to install a danish version of windows 10. This is SO annoying. How can they just assume that you want a danish version just because you live in denmark? There can be a million reasons for using another language and the user should be able to upgrade to the language that they already uses.

Hello, my Windows Update is not working: it returns the error 80073712. It has been like this for several months. I tried to do sfc /scannow but it says: "beginning system scan. This process will take some time" and 2 seconds after it says "Windows Resource Protection could not preform the requested operation". My Windows Help and Support doesn't work either as well as my Windows Features (when I open "Turn Windows features on and off" it returns a blank box). I also tried the "Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x86.msu" but it does not repair the error. I also scanned my system with Malwarebytes Antimalware and avast! to see if it was a malware or virus but i do not find anything.

In the other hand, my date and time is working as well as my search box.

I do not know what I have to do.
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x86.
Thank you for your help

PS: I also tried some other things but I do not remember anymore what they were

Hey BC community,Note: I have never had a problem like this before, it has just started this week.I play maplestory, and this program detected something wrong with my firewall. They told me to go to this window:And said to go to: Windows firewall and do something with it...but it's not there to do anything to? I really have NO IDEA what to do! We had a computer that was infected with a virus which was responsible for the annoying "XP 2011 Security...." pop up. To the best of our knowledge we successfully removed that virus. I recently discovered, on the same machine, that Microsoft and Windows Update and Windows Defender Update won't work with the error "error number: 0X80070424". I also found the Firewall had been disabled (one of the services had been removed). The microsoft fix utility did not fix the problem. Symantec Antivirus and Malwarebytes found nothing. Spybot Search and Destroy found a few harmless things and the Sophos Rootkit checker found nothing of significance.

Hi forum,

I'm having some problem about a week ago with Microsoft security essentials bugging out on me and not opening or updating. Basically the message I got on opening MSE was windows cannot access specified path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file. Upon reading this about a week ago, I think! I proceeded to foolishly downloading a Zeroroot access program and a few MSE alternatives. Since then I have still been unable to re-install MSE by deleting all components in the registry.

The error code I get with trying to re-install MSE is 0x80070643

Having then unistalled the zeroaccess program and the previous alternative antivirus programs, I still cannot get MSE working, and I now have a windows 7 update error. The new system update I believe may be to do with security as-well!! The error code on doing a windows 7 update is 80070005, and it did cut out at 9% every time. (although now I think it is just 0%)
Can someone please help me as I have had a very successful streak of avoiding viruses by always usin MSE. I don't want, and can't afford to get a virus attack, not to mention Im runnign windows 7 ultimate so I need the windows 7 updates too because the ultimate can be dodgy sometimes. Nb the update I cannot do is 1.4mb but I am anticipating windows will throw me a new update any day soon which could be anywhere from 30mb to 200mb and it could fail all of it leaving me prone to attacks.

I can post my specs, ... Read more

So I realized I had an issue when I was prompted by some software to install a hotfix for windows that fixes an issue with exceptions.

I downloaded the hotfix but a prompt popped up almost immediately giving me a 0xc8000222 error.

A simple search lead me to a simple solution: run Windows Update.

When I go to run Windows Update, however, it tells me that the service is not running. I've verified it is, including stopping it and starting it again with a reboot.

There apparently was an update given by Microsoft to fix the Windows Update issue but, of course, it's released as an msu so it fails with the 0xc8000222 error.

I haven't had a chance to run chkdsk yet (I can't spare the time as this is my work machine and have things to do today) though there are no other issues with my system so I find it unlikely. I did run the SFC tool though, the output log can be access here.

Any ideas on how to progress would be great. Thanks.

I honestly think I need some advanced help here because Ive tried about every solution I could find that pertained to me using Google.

So all of a sudden my windows update just stopped working/checking for updates(I get unknown error 8024402C ) and I cannot connect to some Microsoft websites like "www.update.Microsoft.com" and the download place for ie 10, Firefox says it cant find the server at "update.microsoft.com" and "download.microsoft.com" and when I diagnosed the connection with internet explorer it said "The DNS isn't responding" on both Microsoft websites all other websites work fine.

Things Ive tried that did not work:

IMPORTANT: I have recovered my laptop back to an image I made 3 years ago before I knew this would be this hard to fix.
The Microsoft fix it tool gives me error 80072EE7
updated some drivers
Went to "services.msc" and checked that background intelligent, windows update, and workstion were started and automatic.
I did a full scan with malware bytes program and found nothing.
I changed around the (TCP/IPv4) on my internet connection to the opendns and googledns adresses. could not change on the (TCP/IPv6) said invalid address.
Ran ccleaner program to fix any registry problems there might be.

Hi, I think I may be intfected with Malware. I have recently downloaded a few free pieces of software from CNET Downloads, and this morning I got the popup 'Optional update delivery is not working'?

I have run the software you suggest, and its found some problems, I have attached the logs.

Hope someone can help me. Thanks

Answer:Infected? Optional update delivery is not working Popup

Did you have MBAM fix what it found? If not, do so now.

Then rerun Hitman and have it fix everything it found.

Reboot, rescan with both RogueKiller and MBAM and attach the new logs.

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Attach the new C:\MGLogs.zip.

A couple of weeks ago I got error messages from Security Essentials when restarting a PC (Win7/32, SP1). I could not uninstall the program using the Control Panel, so I used the FixIt-utility from Microsoft.
This made things worse.
I am not able to run Windows Update anymore (error code: 80073712 ? Windows could not search for new updates).
There are no system restore dates going back before I started having the problems two weeks ago.
When running sfc /scannow (as admin) I get the following error message:
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
Tried the same function using the Win 7 (SP1) install disk. Get the following error:
There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete.
Restarted several times with the same results.
Since SFC was not working I tried to do a repair install. During the compatibility check I got this message:
Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing.
I have tried several reboots and also checked for a pending.xml file. Nothing.
Any suggestions/ideas? It is a standard PC I use for Office apps.

First post newbie here. I did read up on post rules, so I think I am doing this right. My dell laptop is having some serious issues. Compter info
Windows 7 (factory installed)
Use Internet explorer for browser
Microsoft security essentials for av

Issues:
1) Windows firewall will not start. Comes up with error code 0x8007042c. Went to services and tried to turn it on manually, no go. Searched in device manager, hidden files, found the firewall disabled there. Tried to start, no go.

2) Browser is redirected to ad sites. No porn sites, but ad sites nonetheless. I have ran plenty of Microsoft Security Esential scans. First one found Trojan:Win32/Sirefef, Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0840.EJ, and TrojanDownloader:Win32/Bebeber.A. Still getting redirected I did a scan in safe mode, and found nothing. I did upgrade to the latest explorer, but still getting redirected.

Hopefully I gave enough info. Please help, right now I have it disabled from our home network so nothing else gets affected. So I will download all programs on this laptop, and send them to the infected by USB, good idea?

Thank you,

What does this mean guys
I can't start the windows firewall service, and this is what I see in event

"The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error 13

WF.MSC returns: "The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed

This bloody god damn error codes are so useless! I mean why give me an error
code, why not just translate the meaning !
I believe all other relevant services are up and running - someone, please,
help!

Answer:The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error 13 (0xD). (cannot start firewall)

Hello Amster,
Other folks may have additional ideas for you; hope this helps a bit, take
a look at this
Security Center
<http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/Services/Security_Center.htm>
Look for Dependencies: What service Security Center needs to function
properly:
Black Viper's Windows Vista SP1 Service Configurations
<http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm>
see if that helps:
Other than that, I'm about out of ideas, so good luck with it.
Let us know maybe someone else can conjure up something else to try.
Good luck

Answer:Infected with ZeroAccess and unable to enable windows firewall

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.   Scan with TDSS-KillerPlease read and follow these instructions carefully. Hello:

I was directed to create a new topic and post DDS logs. Presently advised by Broni that my computer is infected with ZeroAccess rootkit and need elevated help and assistance. See previous post here:

This is my teenage son's computer. It is a Lenovo 8811 ThinkCentre desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32-bit Operating System; 2.13gig Intel Pentium Core2 with 3 MB memory.

My son and I were trying to set up workgroup to share files across wireless network (having difficulty there, but that is another story). I noticed Windows Firewall not operational. When attempting to turn on firewall and update settings, receive message that "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x8007042c."

We use Windows Essentials for virus protections. I tried some things I found researching, but it didn't help. This included Updated Windows Firewall Authorization Driver Startup type to Demand. Also, tried the following found on Microsoft forum...

Perform the following steps and update the computer:
1.            Click Start, type Notepad in the Start Search box, and then click Notepad in the Programs list.

Hello lecraig I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same",... Hi

This is my first post.

I had installed rkill sometime ago (about 6 ,omths ago) when I had a virus/trojan and sucessfully dealt with it.  However, over past two days it would appear my laptop has been compromised on a number of levels.  I tried to download many things including rkill but i think whatever has infected my laptop has manipulated the rkill and other downloads so that it provides misleading information.  I did manage to download an rkill and change the name and I think it may be working (not sure though) I tried to download other anti malware stuff but my connections are interrupted and it doesnt complete (I should add that I am using it in safe mode.  Further, my security settings appear to have been altered by whatever this infection/virus/trojan/rootkit is such that I can not ensure I have even the most basic of protection.

Here is a copy of the print out from the  rkill:

Hello,

I recently started receiving "Windows explorer has stopped working" messages, and if I browsed the net, it would always switch to using a proxy instead of wifi. I did a full scan with both Symantec and Malwarebytes but both results showed there was no malicious item. I now also get messages indicating that my antivirus - Symantec Endpoint protection and Windows firewall has been disabled but I cannot enable them.

Today I switched on my laptop and was prompted to check one of my disks for consistency first before it went to the usual start up screen. I can't plug in flashdrives to my computer because the file folders would start being changed to shortcuts etc and files would start disappearing.

I couldn't run DDS in normal mode because it either wouldn't respond, or would close immediately after opening. I was only able to run DDS in safemode with networking. Below are the logs.
Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hi. I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop running Vista Home Premium SP2

Yesterday I noticed I was no longer able to download any files.
The browsers (both firefox & IE) go through the motions of downloading, progress bar, completion of download, but then nothing appears in my designated saving place.
When trying to download anything in IE it states that '[filename] contained a virus and was deleted'. I am trying to download simple, small files, which I know are 'clean'.

I noticed some errant process in 'russian text' running in my processes, so I ran my anti-virus and malware programs.
Avira Antivirus found the Trojan: TR/Kazy.173253.7 Malwarebytes found something also, but after removing it, I stupidly deleted the log.
Neither program now shows any signs of 'infection'.

I tried a System Restore, it failed due to an 'unexpected error'. I tried it again, same response.

I checked my Windows Security Center and noticed it was turned 'off'. I tried to turn it on, but received the message "The Security Center service can't be started".
I ran services.msc and looked for Security Center, but it wasn't there!

I receive the message: Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer. When I try to update the settings I get the message: Windows Firewall was unable to make the requested updates. If I click on the option 'Turn Windows Firewall on or off' I get the message: Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display W... Read more

I have an infection that results in any search engine being redirected. The redirect will usually go to a "search engine" that show only an IP address rather than an actual name or it will return to my homepage - Google. I also get pop-ups that generally go to a "search engine" that show only an IP address. When scanned; Smantec Endpoint Protection and MBAM scans find two problems each, both programs say they delete the files in questions but the problem is never solved. I also get warnings from Symantec and MBAM about attempts to real malicious websites being blocked.

Lastly, I am not able to open Windows Firewall, iget this message (Due to an unidetified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings.) I normally have the Windows Firewall turned off so that I am able to connect via vpn to my company's network.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any help you could provide. Have a great day!

Detection of infection:

My system got infected while I was watching streaming video content (via a P2P plugin software) on a website. All of a sudden Acrobat Reader started and I killed it (coz I never opened any pdf). The CPU usage went to 100% and AVG popped up an alert saying that it found an infection. AVG cleaned the infections and asked for a reboot. There was also a windows balloon that indicated the firewall has been turned off. There was another weird looking icon in the system tray saying that "windows has detected an infection". The icon was a red circle with a white colored cross in it.

After rebooting, I tried to turn on the firewall from the control panel but all options in the form were disabled. I ran a full scan using MalwareBytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AVG Antivirus from windows safe mode. Spybot found 2 infections of Trojan.Killav which it successfully removed and asked for reboot. After the reboot, my firewall was restored for just a moment but then again a balloon popped up stating that firewall is disabled.

I suspect that my system is still infected. I will really appreciate if the experts can guide me to remove any infections.

Thanks,
Sumeer

HelloI see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/247805/infected-with-malwarespyware/ We do not allow more than one topic for the same computer and the same issue as this causes confusion, and in this case may make the disinfection process more difficult. This leaves you with a choice:1) Have this thread reopened and the HiJack This log topic deletedOR2) Keep this thread closed and wait for assistance in the HiJack This log forum. Please note that that forum is VERY busy. Please send a Private Message indicating your choice.Assuming you wish assistance in the HiJack This forum, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. Dear Forum,

the windows update service on my laptop only returns error 80070002. It seems to be a common problem for a lot of people, however most of the standard steps to take do not seem to work for my machine.

CHKDSK is ok.

sfc /scannow however refuses to work. Even with admin privileges, it says that "resource protection" wont allow it to run. If started from windows recovery mode, sfc claims that there is another operation pending and a reboot is needed, first. Needless to say, this other operation is stuck in limbo.

All other methods of manually deleting/reseting the update logs, including the .bat from this website, have failed.

Even returning to a system restore point brought no change.

The last known update to work was for net framework.

I'm not sure where to go from here since i figure my attempts might have already made the situation worse.

Had to use a third party filesharing provider:

Logs.zip

That is going to be an issue then. svchost.exe is just a generic process that can contain multiple processes within.

If you have your computer so locked down, that it is basically a doorstop. You need to reverse that process. A good Gateway for your network is sufficient to protect the LAN. It is the user's poor habits that gets them into trouble and causes an infected machine.

I'm running XP Pro, with Kerio Personal Firewall. I have a rule blocking all traffic on ports 135, 139, 445, and 593, as per my AV's recommendation (for RPC exploit). Trouble is, now when Windows tries to scan for updates on update site, the IE window becomes non-responsive, then crashes. If I disable Kerio, I scan successfully. Am I blocking Update when I block these ports? I suppose I could have denied Update access at some point, but I don't see in the settings where I've done that.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

So my laptop has a bunch of problems. It started out as a virus infection then I found out more problems.

First of all, thank you to Broni for directing me to the thread that tells me to run DSS.

I can't run a systems restore. I get the 0x800700B7 error. As well, Systems Restore says that I've never had a Systems Restore done before, which I think is odd, because I recall seeing Systems Restores created last time I checked (maybe a year ago?)

I also can't turn on Windows Firewall. I get the "Windows can't start the Mpssvc" message.

Mod Edit: Moved from Win8 to the Am I Infected forum ~~boopmeI randomly decided to look at McAfee and check my settings, etc.  When looking at the main screen, everything states its on and green.  I had the most current definitions loaded.  When I checked my McAfee firewall it stated on.  When I clicked to go into the McAfee firewall, the screen then changed and said it was off.  When clicking the Turn On button, it would immediately shut off.  I searched this issue and the blogs stated to look at the Windows Firewall under Services.  When I checked, it was not there.  I did a Windows Search for it and found it.  When it opens it gives tells me I need to Update the Firewall Settings.  When I click on Use Recommended Settings it gives me an error "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x8007042c." I've checked out some of the blog discussions and followed a few thread about creating new register.bat files and running them.  I've also tried merging some .dll files also per the bloggers.  After doing these actions, the Windows Firewall now appears in my Services but when I click to start it I get the error "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall Service on Local Computer.  Error 1068:  The dependency service or group failed to start"

Answer:Can not start Windows Firewall - Error Code 0x8007042c and Error 1068

McAfee has verified I have a virus.  Will post in the Virus Forum.

Answer:Windows Firewall error 0x8007042c + error 1068 (manually starting)

Welcome to the WSF, Junyahh!

Please use the following diagnostic tool. It has a powerful detection mechanism, and may help us get to the cause of your issues:

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool.
Download: Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Download
Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the downloaded file to run it.

When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
At the program's console, press the Scan button.

When done, the tool produces a log, FRST.txt, in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Also, use the Farbar Service Scanner
Download: Downloading Farbar Service Scanner

Let's get a view of all services and dependencies scoped by the tool...
Make sure the following options are checked:

Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender

Press: Scan

When done, FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.

Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

Thank you.

My laptop (seemingly spontaneously) received the "blue screen of death" last evening. Since then, I have not been able to connect to the internet ("IE cannot display the webpage") even though I've confirmed that my wireless connection is active. I've rebooted with still no success.

I think the issue may involve the Windows Firewall as it is always off (in Windows Security Center). I get the following series of messages when I attempt to turn on the firewall:

1. "Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall". Within that message box a link is presented to "Turn on Windows Firewall manually". When I click the link a "Windows Firewall" box/window opens that says...

2. "The Windows Firewall service is not running" and a warning that says "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer". When I click the link that says "Update settings now" I receive the message

3. "Windows Firewall was unable to make the requested updates" (a dead end.)

Would greatly appreciate any help!

Thanks

Answer:Windows Firewall not working?

You'd be better installing one of the many 'free' Firewalls. Windows Firewall is a one way device (it stops incoming only) whereas the 'free' offerings are two way devices stopping incoming and ourgoing threats.Look at ZoneAlarm click here, Comodo Products click here, . All, and others are better protection.
