Virus instantly closes all programs won't allow downloads even in safe mode

Question: Virus instantly closes all programs won't allow downloads even in safe mode

One of my computers had a window pop up with a windows symbol and started doing a ""full scan"" of my computer, my friend using the computer tried closing it down not using task manager. I can open task manager but it will then close down instantly. I have tried to download combofix, rkill, etc.. but it says there is a virus in the program and cancels the installation.

The virus shows a windows shield then Internet Security and underneath Security it says designed to protect. After the scan another window pops up saying I have 84 useless and UNWANTED files on. The bottom right corner has an activate now box.

Every program I have tried to open closes instantly. Below is a photo of the screen.

Preferred Solution: Virus instantly closes all programs won't allow downloads even in safe mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having an issue with my computer since I updated my iTunes and QuickTime and now anytime I try to open or run a program, it pulls up "view downloads" page and asks if I want to run or save the file. Neither option works as it simply re-opens another "view downloads" page and won't allow anything to run. I am operating in Safe Mode but same issue arises. See attached picture as anything I try to open goes to this page and keeps adding the same item over and over if you try to click run or save.
Can you steer me in the right direction?

Answer:Virus won't allow any downloads or internet in safe mode. Won't run antivirus

I tried to boot into safe mode to remove an aggravating program and my computer went through the steps, loading drivers, stopped at ClassPNP.sys and the log in screen appeared. Instantly it blinked off and rebooted into normal mode. This is a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ260E running Windows 7 Home Premium (recent in place upgrade) The problem was there with Vista as well, Sony support had decided it was corrupt Windows files that a reload would fix. I assumed the new OS would fix it, but no such luck. Can anyone help me figure it out, I might really need safe mode some day.

Hey, i recently got a virus 2 days ago on my alienware M15x with windows 7. It started by restarting the computer without any warning. At that time, i wasnt aware that it was a virus. When i logged back on, i couldnt open any programs. The things i can open are certain folders but most are useless. I can also open system restore, but restoring my laptop to a earlier point in time did nothing. The virus was still there. I thought about restoring it to factory settings by booting from the cd. The first time i put in the cd, it worked but it was the wrong cd... Every other attempt afterward has failed to boot from the right cd which i found later. The cd drive may or may not be broken due to the virus. I can open bios, safe mode, pretty much everything before i login i think. But in safe mode, nothing works, programs still wont open. I tried putting antiviruses on my external from this computer and opening them in safe mode on my laptop with no success. When i look at the task manager, i see the programs im trying to open showing up in the tasks section but disappearing quickly. I think thats all, i might be forgetting something. But does anyone think they have any idea on how to fix this?

Can someone please help me out with a recommendation?

I would like to find an anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program that allow the user to both install and run the program while in safe mode.

I try to help people clean up their bogged-down computers, and I have found that the best way to do this is to boot into safe mode in the beginning and then start the clean-up process.

I usually edit msconfig, then I use Wincleaner Orange 1-Click Cleanup to get rid of the junk and clean up the registry. But then I like to scan for viruses and spyware. I really like Spybot and AVG but neither of those programs will allow you to install and/or run them while in safe mode.

Can someone please recommend some (free or trial version) quick but powerful virus and spyware removal programs? I say "quick" because I have a limited amount of time for each computer, and I can't sit around and wait an hour for each program to scan through a bogged-down, virus-laden hard drive.

I know this might be asking a lot, but I figured if anyone knew about such things, it would be you guys. You've helped me so much in the past.

Thanks in advance!

Newreel.

Greetings, and thanks for helping.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and my PC has fallen under the cold, icy grip of an evil virus, so am posting from a laptop. I believe the problem may have originated as some sort of malware/adware and gotten worse. Here's the background info:

-Before these problems originated, I was running AVG Free and Ad-Aware.

-I have no idea what happened -- I usually browse pretty safely and avoid shady websites offering enlargement of my...uh...anyway, I don't open email attachments from bad sources, and never download .exes from untrusted websites.

-The first problem I noticed was Firefox (I don't even use IE) opening tabs with pages full of advertisements, despite a popup blocker. I got sick of this pretty fast and ran AVG. That got a few things but the problem persisted.

-Ditto with Ad-Aware. I would always get a bunch of bad cookies, maybe a trojan, but never anything really severe.

-Then things got worse. AVG's email scanner has been forcibly disabled (!!).

-I try to boot into safe mode and run AVG again. Safe Mode will not run. It crashes on loadup (it hangs up on a driver called SPTD.sys, but renaming that driver causes it to hang up on another one). The driver hangs, then it blue screens really fast (cannot read error code) and restarts.

-Normal mode works fine.

-In the meanwhile I installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and the (paid!) version of Spyware Doctor, all to no avail. ... Read more

Ok so I have quite the virus here. My computer was just fine and dandy until I turned it off last night, and turned it on today. Upon starting up and logging into windows (XP), all my programs that were supposed to open on startup were crashing, and I was being spammed with 'an error has occurred with xxxxxx, send or don't send error report' messages, and then being spammed with Dr. Watson errors as well. I Google'd this and apparently the Dr. Watson error spam was due to a trojan called AceBot. I tried to follow the instructions to remove it and such, but what happened next is why I don't think it's AceBot.

I couldn't use spybot or any of the other programs I was directed to use (like Killbox for example) because the virus would make me get 'an error has occurred etc' when I try to use them as well. I tried doing the same in Safe Mode, but the same thing happens, the virus seems to still survive in Safe Mode, and crashes anything I try to open. I really don't want to reformat and I want that to be my absolute last option (including after smashing my computer with a hammer).

I can't provide a HJT log either because I can't open the text file (I'm able to use HJT but not open the log text file to copy it from, lol), and I don't think this can be removed from anything having to do HJT logs anyways

if anyone knows how to fix this, any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Insane virus (might be acebot), can't use most programs, exists in safe mode...

I have a small lan at my home, the computer i type from (my own) is fully clean, however my family pc seems to have been fully infected and abused while i've been away at university by my brothers! It has many many problems with it, most annoyingly a tendency to disconnect from the internet randomly and closure of mozilla/ie unexpectedly.

I set about cleaning it up, tried to run a preliminary hjt scan, but all webpages closed when i searched for hjt. Copied hjt over the network, when the folder it was in doesnt close immediately (after renaming the exe/folder) hjt closes about 1 second into opening.

Unable to get a hjt log (even in safe mode) i preceeded to scan the computer with:

ad-aware - 30 found or so
spybot s&d - 180 found or so
panda online scan - 60 found, 1 virus removed
avg free - found nothing (i have a feeling the updated virus definitions failed so perhaps ignore this erroneous result)

holding my breath i tried again with hijackthis, still it won't work in safe mode nor with renamed files etc etc

im in the position where in order to remove m problem I need a hjt log, but i cant get a log without removing my problem!

hoping you guys can help me with my little pandora's box, loui

Hello there,

I have a serious issue when the desktop loads into normal mode. The system rebooted instantly until i turned that off, now i get a BSOD. Page fault in nonpaged area, 0x00000050 (0xE4B84000...) is how one of these errors appeared. These change every time though. Before this issue i was doing battle with vexg6ame4.exe though i believe i have removed this following the instructions on a thread in these forums whilst in Safe Mode. I can only link these problems as i have no new hardware, drivers, software etc.

I have run AVG, adaware, Spybot S&D and have used Hijackthis. They have done some bits and pieces though i am still unable to get into Normal mode. I am unable to run SUPERanti spyware and Prevx 2.0 in safe mode.

Reasurringly my PC is very stable in Safe Mode, though i initially had trouble accessing it with my keyboard, i changed to an old PS2 keboard which i am using now. Possibly a USB driver issue?

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated, let me know what information i can provide you through Hijackthis for e.g. to allow you a greater insight.

Many Thanks,

Harry Whittingham

Answer:BSOD instantly in Normal mode, Virus related?

Hello,

I removed PrevX whilst in safe mode as i recalled installing it to combat vexg6ame.exe shortly before these events unfolded. I am now back into Normal mode just about but my internet connection (two monitors in sys tray near clock) are both permanently lit - i am assuming there is something amiss with this and something is abusing my connection.

Cheers,

Harry

Sorry if this isnt the place to post this but i dont know where. Ok I went Start>Run and typed cmd. But then this appears

C:/WINDOWS/system32/cmd.com
C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

I downloaed this quick fix thing and then cmd opens but i cant type anything or see anything. Really need help. Please and thanks! :(

Hi, When i go to Start then Run, and type cmd, it instantly closes. Why is that? Same goes for regedit. Please help me. :(

Also it closes instantly in safe mode on the admin account only. On the regualr account the one i am on now, it opens but cannot see or type anything. Help please :(

Answer:CMD closes instantly

It appears you have some sort of malware on your system that is blocking the Command Prompt and Registry Editor from opening.

As the experts say, please post a HijackThis log in this forum; read this first.

I recently attempted to clean my brother's computer after he aquired a virus from the torrent file program he uses. Regardless, I cleaned a trojan and a backdoor from his system from safe mode. I can not boot in normal mode. Everytime i try the system gets hung up at the windows loading screen then the screen turns black and sits there. I have to hard reboot. I ahve used a repar CD and i have come across an error 0x800700b7, i have also recived this when i tried to work around this problem "identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}"

OS= Win 7

Answer:System will only start in Safe mode, Clean virus in safe mode

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Good morning everyone,
Frequent visitor, first time poster of this forum. I want to thank anyone in advance for committing any amount of time to my problem. I'm hoping someone has some experience with this issue. Allow me to explain:

Yesterday, I woke-up my computer and opened up my browser (I use Google Chrome). As soon as I clicked to open the browser, I noticed a Windows Explorer Pop-up. I have attached a picture of what this box looks like, but to describe it for those who are not able to open the attachment: The windows header said "Mod Info" and the Content said "BC LOADED" the only available options for me to click were "OK" or the "Close" button at the top right. Without clicking anything the box then disappeared and Google Chrome opened as usual. This behavior was unexpected, I've never seen this before. Worrying I had some kind of Spyware or Malware, I decided to try running my AV program. I use Avast Free.

I went to look for the process in the hidden icons list on my taskbar, where it usually resides. I didn't see it there, which was concerning. I tried running the program from the start menu, but after clicking it, nothing opened. This was also a red flag that something must be wrong. So I decided to try and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This program would also not open when prompted.

I decided to scan google for my symptoms to look for recommended fixes. Several tech support forums suggested to those who presented simil... Read more

Whenever I try to launch 'IPConfig' in 'Run' it instantly closes and I can not for the life of me work out why, whenever I try a normal command such as 'msinfo32' It works fine, any ideas on as to why this may be?
Kind regards
Alexander Haywood

Answer:IPConfig instantly Closes when launched?

Have you tried typing in cmd and then you can key in ipconfig or
in the Run box, key in: cmd /k ipconfig
This will open the window with ipconfig already entered.

Ok, so Google Chrome has been fine for quite a long time now, but today someone logged on, opened chrome and it closed straight away. After multiple attempts, always the same thing(this also happens with incognito mode).

I have reinstalled Google Chrome and still does the same thing. I can't really find anything online about this, except a few people shouting 'VIRUS'. I have ran malwarebytes but it found nothing.

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? Or any ideas on how i can fix this?

Thanks in advance

A bit of a bizarre problem, here. I am running a Windows Vista laptop, and it's been functioning fine for about a year or so. However, a week or two ago I found that whenever I opened a window of Windows Explorer, the whole program instantly closed and rebooted, leaving me without a desktop for about thirty seconds. Essentially, I'm made unable to access any file that I can't directly get to from my desktop or start menu. Anyone know what's wrong?

Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

So i have recently installed internet explorer 8 on my Windows xp professional and it never worked. The previous versions(ie7 and lower) worked perfect and i just wanted to test out the newest one. I cleanly installed it, no errors at all. I restarted my computer but there was no icon on my desktop. so i went to start > run and typed iexplore. which i believe is internet explorer. But it just pops up and closes instantly. I don't believe i have any viruses because i run an avg scan every 2 days and nothing pops up. Greatly appreciate any help. BatchFileBasics

Greetings! I originally posted in the Am I Infected forum and was instructed to come post here because I had a newer and tricky rootkit that required more powerful tools then they recommend in that forum. Here is the original thread in the Am I Infected forum.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/256794/am-i-infected-trojan-horse-sheur2azuw-and-crypthcq/Windows XP Service Pack 3My issueThe only indication I had that there was a problem, is that when first booting up my computer, I noticed some of the icons in the lower right corner (near the clock) for programs that normally load - were not loading. Programs like AVG Virus Scanner, or Nostromo Key Pad weren't loading. Also, when first starting my computer it seems to hang up where it says "welcome" for a few minutes. Pretty much all programs such as Firefox, e-mail (AOL) and video games are able to run normally and my system is NOT running slow. What I've done so farWhen I realized I might have had a problem, I went to run my trusty Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scanner to be sure. Well, it runs for 2 seconds - and shuts down immediately by itself! When trying to open it back up, it tells me I don't have permission (?). I removed it via the add/remove programs in the control panel and re-downloaded it and renamed the install file to random.com and also renamed the mbam.exe file to random.com. Just like before, it runs for 2 seconds and immediately closes down and can't be reopened. Tried this same procedure in safe m... Read more

So I tried installing this new game and the autorun popped up and after I had clicked a few slides (hitting next) the window just instantly and randomly closed by itself, after going back and trying this about 20 times with no luck I was frustrated and gave up for the time being think a spyware sweep or a reboot would fix the problem. Anyways I reboot and lo and behold the problems still there, i put it off for a few hours and then I find myself with a new app I just downloaded, I click the install wizard for that and BAM same exact problem I faced with the auto-run install wizard so i knew something was up. Anyways, i'm just posting this up here first to see if anyone else has encountered anything instantly closing auto-run wizards, not exactly easy to search for that info on google as each word pops up with its own search.

I booted up Poser in Safe Mode and it works. Yet, everytime I try to boot it (or any other OpenGL program) in Normal Mode I get a system freeze.

What are the differences between Safe Mode and Normal Mode? Could it be that Safe Mode uses less exe files?

My System:
E8400 @ 3.0ghz
Sony DVD-RW
Western Digital 500gb HDD
HIS Radeon HD3870x2
Patriot 4gb @ 800mhx 4-4-4-12
Gigabyte DS3L

Raidmax Smilodon
Windows Vista x64

I have Catalyst 8.8 drivers. Anything newer than that results in a system crash.

and yes everything is up to date, i have waxxed the backdoor troj. with no prob. but i am needing help tring to fig. out how to solve this prob so i can make shure i completly killed the attack...thanx

Answer:No virus scan in safe mode or safe mode with netwrkg

Hi and Welcome to BleepingComputer,

Not all anitvirus programs work in safe mode, I don't know about Symantec but I do know my ZoneAlarm does not. I do not see the reason to run it in safe mode. If you are really wanting to run stuff in safe mode, run SuperAntiSpyware in it and just run your antivirus program in regular windows.

Btw, it sounds like you had something on there that has backdoor capabilities and if that is the case, then unless you reformat the computer, it will never be truly safe again.

Hi

I'm having trouble with a virus. The virus closes my wireless card driver so i'm using my laptop right now. It also closes dds.scr so i cant attach a log with this thread.

I scanned my computer with Spybot Search & Destroy but it didn't find anything. While i was looking at what it was scanning i saw virtumonde.dll and some other virtumondes but spybot didn't detect it.

Also, UnhackMe installed itself on the computer. I'm not sure what it is, but i looked online and it wasn't a virus. I tried continuously opening dds.scr with task manager open and RunGuard.exe opens and then closes after i stop opening dds.scr

I also noticed that there are 6 svchosts.exe running. 2 on network service, 2 on system, and 2 on local service.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:the virus that closes all programs

I had something like this one before and it wasn't a virus per se'. I used msconfig to prevent programs from starting up. Next, I rebooted and as soon as I could, I opened task manger and closed the program I recognized wasn't supposed to be running. In my case it was something Antivirus 2010 or along those lines.

Hi all, I am trying to run CoreInfo.exe to see if my processor supports Hyper-V before paying msoft for win8-pro, but win8.0 slams the CMD window shut instantly.

I have searched and tried all suggestions but still it flashes open then closed.

Failed: Elevated command prompt
Failed: CMD [enter] coreinfo.exe -v
Failed: Set Run as Administrator
Failed: Set Compatibility to 7, XP, Vista
Failed: CMD /K CoreInfo
Failed: CMD /K Core info > core.txt = Redirect output to a text file

It seems like Coreinfo is appending an "Exit" to the command line command string. About right for the inept msoft programmers.

Any thoughts on how to stop this long enough to read the output?

Thanks

Answer:Win8 CMD window instantly closes - Can't read results

Check with: systeminfo (built in OS)The easiest way to check if your computer/procesor is supporting SLAT is to execute in cmd: systeminfo .
At the end of the results there is a section "Hyper-V Requirements" which is showing 4 elements. All of them has to be "Yes" in order to install Hyper-V on Windows 8 (there is a SLAT element too).

Ok so my computer is really jacked up. Like the title says I cannot boot into safe mode, access Google or Youtube, and when I try to download something it is saved as Freecorder and when I try to open the file it asks for a program to use to open it with even when I should not need to open the file with another program. I read the prep guide and the only thing I could do was run the GMER scan because it was a zip file. My friend who normally helps with my computer problems tried starting my computer in safe mode it would only stay in safe mode for a few seconds before it restarted itself. I have tried running SpybotPortable and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to fix the problems with my computer, but that has not worked. Also sometimes when I click a link it will send me to one of three or four other sites. I would greatly appreciate some help with these problems.

my sister's computer has a virus on it (not the computer listed in my profile). It closes all applications and processes that i try to run, including the tools that produce the initial log files i am supposed to post with this thread. It appears to be a false w32/blaster.worm virus, very similar to the ones listed at the following two links:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/297897-w32blasterworm/
http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f284/w32-blaster-worm-552369.html

the differences are that it tells me
"mcrdsvc.exe can not start
file mcrdsvc.exe is infected by w32/blaster.worm
please activate spyware protection to protect your computer"

i have noticed a couple of other "files" it cannot run but they don't stay up long enough for me to see them

it will then also bring up what i assume to be a false virus scan telling me about all of the infections on my computer and will also bring up some firewall notice saying a "hidden file transfer to remote host is detected"

this computer is a gateway laptop with an intel centrino processor running windows xp media center. (not sure if that means anything, but there it is...)

any and all help is greatly appreciated! you guys have helped me in the past, for which i am ever thankful! hoping that i can get rid of this virus without losing any files as my sister uses this computer for work with her foundation.

This is really odd; on my other computer, no matter what the browser I use, I cannot access drop down menus. This includes both the browser (say bookmarks dropdown) and websites as well (say, selecting a state on a dropdown menu form). They both instantly 'close' again.

I've tried various browsers, updated my Java, ran virus scans and spyware scans to no avail.

Any idea what's going on?

Note, this has been happening the past 3 days, before that all was fine. Also, sometimes the bookmarks dropdown will work, but nothing else.

EDIT: Weird, it did the insta-close on the Win 7 speaker volume as well, so I guess its not just the browsers. Also now when I manage to get the volume up to max, the slider automatically slides back down to 0...

Answer:Any drop-down type menu instantly closes - in browsers and on Win 7 itself...weird

Self reply: Weird, I just figured it out, so I'll post this in case others have trouble.

It was my wireless mouse -- any slider / dropdown menu would be messed up, but as soon as I used trackpad, everything was fine.

I just finished [finally] updating my copy of Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro (manually downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and did an in-place update within the existing copy of W8). After I did all of the available Windows Updates, I noticed that, whenever I try and open an elevated Command Prompt window (I want to do this to try and manually do some things to remove Windows.old, since it says that the directory is not empty), I see it open, but close instantly. A non-elevated Command Prompt window opens just fine. I searched, and haven't found anything. This also happens in safe mode.

Hello all. First time on these forums. I've developed in an issue with downloading. I've tried downloading a multitude of files on chrome, firefox, and IE. Once the download is complete (if it even bothers to download instead of instantly finishing the download) I get the an error message that says "Windows cannot find C://etcetcetc, make sure you typed the name correctly and try again."

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary lately to cause an issue, so I'm at a loss on how to fix it. Really hope some one can shed some light on the situation.

Answer:Downloads instantly being deleted

It sounds like there is a firewall that's preventing access to temporary files or wherever the download is trying to be saved to. It could be your anti-virus program. Have you tried disabling it before you do a download?

Hello everyone!

even pictures that are saved off of websites get deleted
does anyone know how to fix this?
I can download an fixes/software to fix this so I'm stuck.
please help me!
thanks a lot in advanced.

Answer:Downloads Cleared Instantly

Welcome
Sounds like malware trying to protect itself. Update your anti virus and make a full scan.
Then, I would suggest downloading Malwarebytes and making a full scan, but I know that you cant do that.
Try to install, its not a download, eset online anti virus.
Free Online Virus Scanner | ESET
Then make a full scan.

Hello all and thank you for taking the time to help me out.
I have a quite challenging problem that I?ve been battling with for a day and a half non stop now. Few days ago my laptop got infected with something and started redirecting the websites and doing all other stuff associated with viruses. I ran a super antivirus which found a few things and deleted them (trogen.droprr was one of them for sure). After restart computer was still acting strange. Tried running Malwarebytes but it would run for about 5 seconds and close out. I?ve read most of the posts regarding fixing Malwarebytes auto termination and none of the techniques helped. Hijackthis runs for a second or two and closes. Once it closes it cannot be reopeded, clicking on executable results in a ?? you have not appropriate permissions to access this file? the only way to run hijackthis (or any other registry application after it has been opened once) again is by reinstalling it again (and it will run for a second or two). Renaming the executable doesn?t help. Running in safe mode doesn?t help. Autoruns registry scanner mentioned in one of the posts acts just like Hijack this (works for a few seconds). The only registry scanner that I was able to get to work was Windows Registry Editor 2.0 which has a selectable scans (scan different registries at a time). It scans all of the registries no problem but as soon as it gets to ?Windows services? program closes and will not reopen again until reinstalled. In ... Read more

i installed a windows xp update dec. 31, 2004, and soon after that, my internet programs couldn't be launched.

it will launch the internet explorer for about 1 second and then close itself, as if it didn't happen. it will launch aol for about 3 seconds and then close itself. it would launch yahoo messenger for about 2 seconds and then close itself.

also, i keep getting an error message about drwtsn32.exe and the system would hang.

is there anyway i can fix this? if you need more details, please, please help. i tried taking it to people to get fixed but they can't figure it out without reinstalling and reformatting it.

please help.

Answer:Please Help! Internet based programs and virus scan closes

Ok, the drwtsn32.exe error has to do with the Dr. Watson utility built into windows. It is called up when the service on your PC such as Internet Explorer or your AOL terminate like that. What Exactly does it say about drwtsn32.exe? This could be coming up because it saved a log file or because it failed to load itself.

So I was infected by this virus that came out of nowhere. It won't let me run any programs (other than Firefox, oddly enough) and it closes every program that I run. Before I restarted, I was at least able to run the Task Manager so I could have deleted a bunch of suspicious things, but now I can't even do that. What should I do? I really need this computer for a project I'm doing, can someone PLEASE help?I tried installing things and renewing my McAfee subscription, but again, it closes ALL my programs. I was browsing the internet the other day when I clicked on a link and my computer shut down. I immediately knew it was a bad link. My computer rebooted and it wouldn't let me on IE after that at all. I then did a restore to the previous day. I was about to get online so I went and downloaded Kaspersky IS and scanned my computer. My laptop messed up and rebooted itself. Then got Anti-Malware Bytes in Safe mode and ran a scan, still had issues Kaspersky not running right and my computer freezing after just a couple of minutes. Went back and did a restore again to the same spot and this time said forget Kaspersky and jsut did AMWB. It showed my computer is clean, yet about 2 minutes after booting, my computer reboots and the safe mode option pops up. I can run ok in safe mode but cannot get it to work in normal mode. I did trend micros housecall and another online scanner and all say my computer is clean. Yet, when I start IE, I am redirected on every link I click to scour..... or another site with links on it. Any help is greatly appreciated, as well as a recommendation for a better Anti-virus. I jsut had McAfree that came with this laptop. Thanks!

Cannot download the hijack this program to obtain a log. Only strange thing that I seen was that an svchost prescript file was on my hard drive.... svchost.exe.3530f6702.pf I believe. Not sure what to look for or how I am going to remove it since I cannot download and run an antivirus program anyways. Any suggestions?

The other day I started having weird problems with firefox and ie windows popping up with pages... I knew something was up and ran spybot. After it said it found some trojans, I told it to fix them. After fixing them, I reset the computer. Since then... no programs run.. I can't get on the internet, I can't run anything. I can view files... but that's it.

I've tried running EVERYTHING spyware/virusware/malware related, but absolutely nothing happens. When I am looking at my task mgr and try to run something, It doesn't even show up as trying to open.

When I try to right click on something to run it, I am given a "run as" option, but it just asks what profile to run it as and then nothing happens.

HELP!!

Oh... I can't go into safe mode either.. I get a black screen with the 'safe mode' in the corners... nothing else but sp3 version.

I have been through the read 'n run list and unfortunately I cannot run any of the programs or provide logs, for the reasons I am about to state.

I've been having issues with some kind of browser hijacker I can't seem to get rid of. Yesterday it downloaded what is apparently the mother of all viruses- it immediately restarted my computer, whereupon I could not run ANY programs at all. I tried restarting in safe mode and in safe mode w networking- no dice. I tried system restore- appeared to work, but the virus was still there. (In retrospect I realize this was a bad idea, I didn't realize at the time that the virus may have screwed up my restore points.)

I cannot run any programs, either from the hard drive or from a usb flash drive. When I try, the process comes up briefly in task manager, and then it's almost immediately killed. Either "svchost. exe *32 (winrscmde in the description column)" or the windows error manager pops up before the process is killed, not sure if that's connected.

When I boot into safe mode, the following processes are running: csrss.exe, ctfmon.exe, explorer.exe, lsass.exe, lsm.exe, services.exe, smss.exe, about six copies of svchost.exe, system, system idle process, taskmgr.exe, wininit.lexe, winlogon.exe

At one point I was miraculously able to get firefox open in safe mode with networking, I was able to download avg and to run malwarebytes- it detected the svchost trojan and deleted it, but whe... Read more

There are time I need to boot to safe mode but then I do not have access to the cpu as it does not the start VNC setvice.

If I am at the computer In safe mode I can manually start it and it works fine.

How can I add that program to the list of services or programs loaded in XP Safe mode?

Hi,

Would be grateful for any help on my problem - suspect may be from something nasty from my son accessing soccer on P2P site Sopcast.

Mid last week all printing stopped to wirelessly enabled Kodak all-in-one printer - tried de-installing then re-installing drivers etc. pc has also been running much more slowly for past week or so.

Yesterday problems occurring with IE and Opera browsers not opening then all Microsoft programs couldn't be accessed - started to open when icons double clicked but then closed immediately or no response to double click. Looks like any .exe file not working when normal boot but opening OK when in safe mode.

Any help you can offer would be gratefully received.

Thanks, RHepneil

Answer:programs won't run unless in safe mode

Hi, appear to have found a solution to this.

I found a response to a similar problem on another forum where user had thought he'd been infected by something only to discover that Threatfire was causing .exe files not to load. There are also some reported problems with Threatfire having conflict issues with Avast (which I also run).

I uninstalled Threatfire in safe mode and rebooted - everything loads perfectly and applications open up fine. It's also way faster than it's been for some time and reintsalling my Kodak printer software has been OK so suspect Threatfire was causing most of the headaches.

Not sure if this solution makes sense to more technical folks on this board but it seems to work for me!

Thanks

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

OK ... Not sure what caused this but ....

When I got home, computer was in blue screen. Unplugged and rebooted. Hung at Starting Windows. Unplugged again and rebooted. Selected user and continued on. Hung after desktop image was downloaded and normal desktop was presented. If I moved the cursor to the task bar, got hour glass. Could not get task manager to appear and could not start any program.

Booted in safe mode with networking. Opened firefox in safe mode and it was really funky. Could not get to techguy.org. Showed some porn. Basically, it was highjacked.

Ran hijack this (probably an older version) which I then copied onto flash drive and copied onto my laptop for posting here.

Need help, thought I'm concerned that I won't be able to download any programs you suggest onto the affected computer.

Thanks,

Hi All,

Been having this problem since yesterday. Whenever I start up windows, it freezes after a couple of minutes. Tried going into safe mode to run virus scan (Avira and Malwarebytes) but both freeze halfway through scanning and I have to do a hard reset. No idea at all what is wrong with it.

Also find that when I try to open Adobe PDF Reader, it shows this message when I am in normal mode. 'The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed.' Right after that, it freezes. Not sure if that's relevant.
Please help me! Thanks a lot in advance!

Just a general question:1. When doing a routine scan for viruses and malware, etc. (and just generally speaking), is it better to scan in safe mode or regular mode? 2. If you scan in safe mode, is there anything that wouldn't show up (that you could potentially miss) that *would* show up in regular mode? 3. Or is safe mode just better all around, and everything is covered (plus more) that you'd find with scanning in regular mode?(I'm referring to scanning with AVG A/V, AVG Anti-Spyware, SpyBot (old version), and Ad-Aware SE.)Thanks!

Answer:Better To Scan In Safe Mode Or Regular Mode For Virus/malware?

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode designed to start Windows with minimal drivers and running processes to diagnose problems with your computer. This means some of the programs that normally run when Windows starts will not run.The Windows operating system protects files when they are being accessed by an application or a program. Malware writers create programs that can insert itself and hide in these protected areas when the files are being used. Using "Safe Mode" reduces the number of modules requesting files to only the essentials to make your computer functional. This in turn reduces the number of hiding places for malware, making it easier to find and delete the offending files. Using your anti-virus and anti-malware tools, in "Safe Mode" also speeds up the scanning process. Read "Beginners Guides: Windows XP Safe Mode Explained" and "What is 'Safe Mode' used for and why?"

Hello,

When I am in safe mode all my programs work.  When in regular mode any icon I click on nothing happens.  I have run anti virus software and malewarebytes both say computer no threats found.  My OS is Vista.  How do I resolve these issues?  Do I have a virus?  Do I have a software or hardware issue or both?  Please make your answers clear and easy to understand.  Would doing a system restore do any good to resolve these issues?

Thanks for any and all help.

Answer:programs only work in safe mode

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

brad1994,Just plug your USB flash drive into the USB port of your infected computer. Wait for the hardware to automatically install on your computer. (If the flash drive has not been used previously on the computer.)After the hardware is installed, the flash drive is ready to useIn most cases, an Options Window automatically opens. Select: Open folder to view filesClick: OK(If the Options window does not appear, go to Start > My Computer. Locate the flash drive and double-click on it. Doing so will open the flash drive.)You will see what files are in your flash drive. Select the exeHelper file, and double-click it to open.If it does not run, drag the exeHelper file to the Desktop by doing the following:-Click and hold the mouse pointer over the file (Do not release the click as this will merely highlight the file and not prepare it for dragging.)-Move the mouse pointer over to the Desktop. -You should see the file visibly "moving" on the screen to indicate where it is going.-Release the mouse pointer over the Desktop to 'drop' the fileNow, double-click the exeHelper file on the Desktop and see if it runs. Hi, i am new to this forum and i have a pretty big problem with my computer. Dell Dimension 4550, windows xp home edition, service pack 3.

I first encountered the problem when i was bombarded by a ton of popups of random things in internet explorer, but i use opera as my main browser. so that was odd. The popups then turned into an automatic installation that looked to be authentic windows security center, but was a fake, and i could do nothing about it. if i ended the process, another would start.

The popups have now stopped, i ran superantispyware and found many viruses. I fixed all, but when i log onto windows, i get error messages of missing .dll files: ntuser.dll, calc.dll, sinuvili.dll, pofutuva.dll.

Another problem is my safe mode. when i attempt to run, a blue screen appears stating that windows has shutdown to prevent damage to computer, and at the bottom of screen i see: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7A46528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I saw in another forum that to fix this, i could boot from the original xp disc, select "R" to repair, and enter "CHKDSK /R". I tried this, but nothing happened.

Another observation is my computer clock, it has changed to military time.

I have now tried to run a HIJACK THIS log, but i wasn't able to. So i ran rsit.exe, and came up with the attached log file.

Can someone please look over the log file and tell me if there is anything i can do? i am lost when it comes to this.

Thank you, ... Read more

Only being able to run in Safe Mode is usually (but not always) a driver issue. If this just suddenly happened then System Restore to a date/time before that might well fix it.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

This is my friend's laptop that was running slow and having a lot of issues. He gave it to me to fix up, but I believe there is a much bigger issue. Here's what I've done so far:

Installed and ran TuneUp Utilities 2012. Defragged and fix issues with the registry and hard disk (via TuneUp's Disk Check). All bad sectors removed. This sped up the computer considerably and fixed the boot failure issue.

Installed and ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Removed 72 bad files, but 5 remain that cannot be removed. They are 5 instances of PUP.DownloadnSave (1 file, 4 registry key).

The Problem: After booting the computer normally, when I try to open My Computer, Control Panel, and any system folder, I get an error message. "explorer.exe  Windows cannot access the specified device, path,or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I also had to create a new user name and migrate all of the files from the old user name to the new one because the old name would give an error when I tried to log in.

It boots, and then freezes after about 10 seconds, every time.

So can I run the rest of the programs from safe mode? or?

Additionally, I have viruses all through my external USB Hard Drive too...Any special instructions?

...Should I plug the external HD into the computer when I run the scans?

Thanks a lot!

We tried (after a simple restart and the same thing happening) in Safe Mode: CCleaner, ScanDisk (had to reboot), Avast, MBAM, Auslogics Defrag. No bad files/viruses/malware showing up. I'm now using Safe Mode with Networking to post this.

Answer:Programs will not open even in safe mode

First download and burn an Antivirus LiveCD, which boots it's own operating system so that windows is not running, and scans your system for viruses.http://www.computing.net/howtos/sho...When finished, reboot your computer in normal mode, download and install fresh antivirus software, even if there is already one installed to your computer. When installed, update the antivirus definition files.Download and install Malwarebytes and let it run. While it's scanning your system, the newly installed antivirus software also scans all files for infection. After that, download and install Ccleaner and let it run. When finished, reboot your computer and check if it's working as expected.

I was unable to open or run anything on my laptop. In May or June, I was looking for a job and filling out online applications. In the middle of this, I got a pop up saying something about Windows Defender. I don't remember if it said I needed to update or run it. Since I was on my 7th or 8th application, I just clicked the link and the second I let go of the button, I realized I didn't use Windows Defender and I watched as it loaded a virus or malware on my laptop. I shut down the laptop and it just sat there until earlier this week. I bought and installed a new router, so the laptop cannot access the internet right now and I have the wireless signal turned off. I tried to run the programs you request in the READ ME FIRST thread, but was unable to open anything. I would get a pop up in the bottom right corner of the screen, like I do with my AV, but it was from a "Windows" program. I wish I would have got a screenshot of it, but I did not. It wanted me to click a button that would completely protect my computer. I said everything I tried to open was a virus.

So I ran all 5 programs in Safe Mode. MalwareBytes found about 139 objects. After running all 5 programs, I restarted in normal and ran all 5 programs again. Everything seems to be working fine and the second set of scans found nothing. I have the logs from the Safe Mode scans and from the second set of scans after I restarted normally. I am just wondering if my laptop is clean and safe to conn... Read more

If you are thinking on uninstalling your antivirus program,
you can create a shortcut from your desktop directly to the programs and features.

right click on desktop > select "NEW" > then select "Shortcut".
on the window, type "appwiz.cpl" without quote. then Enter.

Bonjour,

I have this problem for 5 days ago from now. I'm running on Vista home 32bits. I can't open programs when I boot in normal mode. They appear in the task manager, but they don't show up. I've tried Steam, WoW, Firefox, IE etc... The only program that works perfectly, and this is weird, is Skype. This one works. I've tried planty solutions that Ive found around the internet,I don't remember them all, but none worked. I've tried the registry thing. I've tried the .exe fix, it did'nt work.

Everything works in Safe mode(Firefox, Steam, etc) I first thought it was my anti-virus (Live Onecare) but no, it wasn't(I uninstalled it). I've disable startup programs with msconfig, no chance this way neither...Even a backup restore failed.

I'm sorry for my bad english, i'm trying to be clear as much as possible. Leave me feedback for more details! I really need help

Thanks and this is much appreciated.

i am trying to clean my computer as thouroughly as possible as it has been a very long time since anyone has bothered.
is there any disadvantages to running spybot, ad-aware, scan disk, defrag or ccleaner in safe mode? can you generally get better results when this is all done in safe mode? should safe mode scanning/cleaning be done regularly or only as needed when the regular stuff does not do the trick? thanks

Answer:Running Programs In Safe Mode

What Safe Mode does is to run your operating system with only the most essential modules; this can save time when running scandisk or defragging, becuase fewer programs attempt to access the various files on the disk which causes these two programs to restart. At times, you will also need to run your AV in Safe Mode when it cannot quarantine a virus because other applications are accessing it and therefore Windows protects it.
If your computer is gunked up (forgive the technical language), then running all the applications and utilities you mentioned in Safe Mode for the first time might speed up the process. Normally, though, you can run these in regular mode.
Regards,
John

So, have a bit of an odd one for you guys. My aunt brought to me a laptop of hers that was running sluggish and sure enough it was a bit slow on startup. So I did the normal thing and ran CCleaner, disabled unnecessary programs and finished with installing some updates (and there was a lot of them, didn't get to an antivirus run through). Then when I had the computer boot back into normal mode the computer was far worse. It would take minutes for things to register.

Finally I booted it back into safe mode but to my surprise, things are almost as bad there. But only sort of. See sometimes it'll allow me to open up a program and run it immediately for it to freeze up and not responding. Other times, programs will again take minutes to finally start up. Heck, explorer itself has stopped responding a couple of times.

So finally I was like, "Okay, she wants Windows 10 on the computer anyways and to have it reset, so let's just go with a Refresh and start from there. Started the process but it stopped saying some error had occurred. Tried resetting and got the same result.

At this point, I'm sort of at a loss and could really use some assistance. Any ideas? Not even entirely sure this is a software related issue but I'm sort of hoping it is as those are easier to fix, and less costly. But the other reason is that things definitely seem far worse after my fixes than before.

So I have a program that logs activity on my work computers. Employees have recently discovered this and started booting in safe mode whenever they check their personal emails or facebook. I have been doing some reading and found that there is a way to launch programs in safe mode through the registry. Every place I found says "If you prefix the value of these keys with an asterisk, *, is will run in Safe Mode" but I have tried over and over with different methods and I cannot get it to work. Does anyone have an example they can show me to send me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:launch programs in XP Safe Mode via registry

You cannot launch programmes in safe mode. You can only boot the OS in safe mode and that is done at boot time. Safe mode leaves out a lot of drivers, especially video drives. That is why you get a low resolution screen. The chances are that a lot of programmes will not work in safe mode because the video is to low a resolution..Stuart

I have been having some problems with Thunderbird on Windows 10 and decided to try the Windows safe mode to see what is affecting Thunderbird, My idea was that if TB worked OK then I would start turning on one program/app at a time to see what is causing the problem. TB does work fine when in safe mode. However, I have found a worse problem. Windows 10 doesn't allow you to turn on individual programs when in safe mode! Examples are Office 2013, my anti virus (NOD), printers, etc. Skype works OK and Thunderbird starts up fine.If I can't turn on apps, how am I supposed to locate the guilty party?Any help would be appreciated

Answer:Can't start individual programs in safe mode

I'm using Windows 7 Pro, so I'm guessing about Windows10. Is there a way to get into msconfig? Start, run box type: msconfig ?
If so, hide microsoft items, perhaps temporarily turn off most of the services and startups you see in msconfig. If you see any button about making permanent the changes -- never click it. Meanwhile, if Thunderbird begins working, re-enable services and startups two by two, testing tBird along the way.

Windows Vista Ultimate

When I woke up this morning I tried to use vista but explorer and desktop were not responsive. When I right clicked I would just get an hour glass with no response. I was forced to hit the reset button.

Now after logging back into vista I have a major problem. Anytime I try to start a program (example firefox, IE, vlc player, anything) they just open up and immediately close when viewed in the process list.

Fortunately I can run all my programs just fine in safe mode (i'm in safe mode now).

Any advice? Think its a virus or corrupted files?

Issues described below are unchanged after going through the malwars process and finishing it up by removing the tools and closing out MGclean.bat. Avast was still not opening in regular nor safe mode so I'm reinstalling it in safe mode. I did not attach logs from malware scan to this post.

Issues began Thursday night, I believe. I suspect someone is the family was using my machine and clicked yes to a pop up of some kind, though no one will fess up. Issues are sudden and different than anything previous.
A couple of program errors pop up when apps try to load at start up.
- acmon.exe the application was unable to start correctly 0x00000e5
- InsOnCfg.exe was unable to start correctly 0x00000e5
Most programs now won't start at all on regular boot up. Firefox opens but hangs unresponsive after 2-3 pages. When I can finally get firefox to close I get a breakpoint error
- The exception breakpoint . A breakpoint has been reached 0x80000003 occured in the application at location 0x0000000006C30EC83
Chrome & Edge won't open at all. Avast, MalwareBytes, etc. also won't open at all. Most open and seem to function normally in safe mode, though I still get "Tips can't be opened using the built-in administrator account. Sign in with a different account and try again."
I did Repair_windows.exe twice in safe mod... Read more

My computer began stalling randomly forcing me to hard-boot it, and I was getting a few pop-ups. Safe Mode allowed me to run a few things myself, but IE began opening up blank page after blank page. I ended the process before it would stall my computer again. I can run AVG in Safe- Mode using the command-line but it doesn't yield any way to remove the infected files. I can not run Combo-Fix, MBAM, or SAS..including even in Safe-Mode. I click the programs, and it acts like it's trying to open it, and I can even see it in my system processes but the programs will not actually be open. I ran HJT and tried to "Fix" the files Ponegiwu.dll, and Robogossu.dll (sp?). They wouldn't go away, but now the Robogossu one seems to have changed to "hegubagu.dll". I'm not really sure what else to do here...

Answer:AV Programs not running in Safe Mode, Ponegiwu.dll, etc.. HJT

UPDATE: I turned the files off from the start-up menu to see if that would help, but my comp still messed up. I tried to manually delete the files through the registry editor and they would automatically re-appear. When I tried to manually delete the 32.5kb RUNDLL32.exe file, it did not reappear, but the problems have continued. My comp will run normally in regular mode for about 2 minutes before completely freezing and forcing a hard-boot. I get a ViewMgr error when I boot-up as well.

I have an Emachine and it was running slow. I noticed that my programs would open then immediately close or not open at all. I tried to restart my computer in safe mode but it would not load. It was just a black screen. I then used my system recovery disk and loaded everything again. I thought it was working fine but then it started to happed again. I'm back to square one. Can't restart my computer in safe mode, regular mode, or last known good configuration. Im guessing it is malware but can't seem to find it. Please Help!!

Answer:Programs close and can't start in safe mode

Hi there hbliii, welcome to BC!
