Preferred Solution: Windows 7/64-bit scanned with Kaspersky/Malwarebytes (free)/ and Avast (free)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows 7/64-bit scanned with Kaspersky/Malwarebytes (free)/ and Avast (free)

Please boot into safemode with networking and let me know if you can connect to internet

So basically I only installed the behavior shield from the avast installation wizard. I was thinking having Kaspersky as my main AV along with avast's behavior blocker is a good set up. However, admittingly I am a novice, and I don't know if these two will clash. So far, everything seems to be going smoothly, but the WD notification icon is displaying that X and is saying I shouldn't have more than one AV installed. Thanks.

Answer:Using Kaspersky free with only Avast Behavior Shield installed.

I personally think it should work ok running these 2 programs if Avast is only enabled for behavior blocking.

Avast and SecureAPlus have been fairly interesting for me. Both seem to have great scanning and protection. Which would you choose?
NOTE: I have heard that SecureAPlus may have a really slow scan in the beginning. If that something you don't like that fine, Avast has a slow scan as well so I am not counting against either one.

Thread Approved. Here are the official websites:

SecureAPlus: Free Cloud Antivirus & Application Control for PC - SecureAPlus

I am currently running:Avast! Free EditionWindows DefenderMalwarebytes Anti-Malware (free edition)Windows FirewallI don't like Windows Defender. I want to replace it with another, free, reliable anti-spyware program. What should I use? SOMETHING THAT IS CONFLICT-FREE WITH AVAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And overall, do i have good protection? EDIT: Apparently, Avast! auto-updates every 240 minutes, by default. I thought it updated immediately when there were new virus definitions? Can I set it so that it updates like this?

Answer:Best FREE anti-spyware program? (must be conflict-free with avast! home)

1) You cannot set an av to update when there are new definitions - how would it know? 2) I don't care for Windows Defender either and I always disable it on all of my systems. You're fine without it. The only thing I would add to what you already use is SpywareBlaster free edition. It does NOT run resident and you need to remember to update it about once a week. It blocks known malicious web sites. Other than that you should be fine.

I'm running Zemana Antilogger Free and I would like to know if there's any benefit in also having Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free, or does ZAL Free's SSL Intrusion Prevention module do pretty much what MBAE Free does.

The ZAL Free SSL Intrusion Prevention module does the following:
-Protects SSL (https) data pre-encryption
-Prevents Man-In-The-Browser and HTML injection attacks
-Monitors the Trusted Root CA Store for fake root certificate installations

Answer:Zemana Antilogger Free and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free?

@uninfected1 ZAL Free is compatible with MBAE, use them both

Have been happily using Avast anti-virus for some time now but today I was advised that my 'subscription has expired' and that I need to renew. Unfortunately it would seem free protection is no longer available as when I click on the 'Renew now' button I'm directed to Avast site to renew for Ģ39.99 (after Ģ10 'loyalty' discount). Redownloading the free version gives me a message 'there was an error changing the product configuration' when I try to install it.
Can anyone advise if this is in fact the case (ie that I'm not doing anything incredibly stupid)? If it's not longer free, what do people currently recommend for free protection?

Answer:Avast free anti-virus no longer free

I have always used Avast and Comodo as my AV/Firewall combination. I find it to be very useful, and although Comodo provides many annoying popups, they are useful and informational (I would consider myself a competent computer user, though no expert).

Recently, I just wanted to see how good my combination was and if there was a better one. I found topics that said of how Avast's web shield completely bypasssed Comodo's rules. I tested this:

1) Block chrome.exe in Comodo completely
2) Check that both Comodo and Avast are updated, and Avast web shield ON
3) Open Chrome and see what happens

Results: At first I thought it was fine, google.com was blocked. Then I tried clicking on bookmarks. yahoo.com would open, youtube.com would open, etc. I was shocked to find that Comodo was letting these websites open even though chrome.exe was blocked!

After doing some more research, and realizing that this was a big problem, and that many solutions did not work, with avast being blamed or comodo being outdated, or even that Win 7 64 bit was limiting comodo, I tested it again with web shield OFF.

I repeated the process of blocking chrome and opened google.com and other websites. This time all the websites were blocked!

Is there a solution where I can keep web shield on and have comodo be effective in blocking? Or do I need a new firewall?

Answer:Avast 7 free! AV + Comodo Free Firewall Conflicts

The AVG sub-forum appears to inactive except for Beta / Changelogs posts.

What are the major differences between AVG Free Antivirus and Avast Free Antivirus in 2018?

Answer:2018: What are the Major differences between AVG Free and Avast Free?

There will be more available in Avast Free as as far as I am aware, I believe the difference is in the protection components. Avast incorporated some of the code-base from AVG after they acquired the company into Avast software regarding static and dynamic but I doubt the products are identical in terms of what is available now. I'd imagine they acquired AVG to give "Avast" branded software a boost, and kept the AVG company up and running to generate more income from all the existing AVG customers.

This is speculation though, I can't say for sure.

The protection capabilities of Reason Core Security way back when tested by some members is premature but of course as development goes it should provide convincing results.

Hi,we need to know which antivirus program does the most complete job for virus protection and removal--Avast free home,or ,Avg free.We know Avast adds 4 more programs to "task manager" than Avg does,so does that represent Avast doing a more complete job?
Thanks for any information

Answer:Avast free or Avg free--which is the most complete program?

They both detect viruses well, but in my opinion, and others also, Avast seems to be better at removing them. Select the custom installation option and you have the option of leaving out any of the four sub-programs. For instance, since I don't have Outlook, I didn't install the Outlook virus scanner module so I wouldn't waste storage and computer resources for something I didn't need.

So should i switch to Avast free edition? and will it work well with vista. i am also looking for another free simple interfaced non obtrusive firewall to replace the standard windows firewall. Can you recommend one?(Ps i have looked at COMODO twice but can't get the hang of it)

Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies about security. You can sugges other free products that are easy and protect well. Only antivirus.

Answer:Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies

If they absolutely don't know anything ("Hey, what's quarantine? What's scanning? What's definitions?") then Bitdefender without a doubt. If they know basic settings and to tell the difference between false positives than Avast!. I'll have to vote Bitdefender here, but Avast! is a much greater antivirus with those with basic security knowledge.

Update: See below post. I know longer reccommend Bitdefender. +1 to Avast!

I noticed that the Avast free i have is 154 mb and on the MG download site it shows 47.8 mb. Did I download a bunch of stuff I don't need? Also not sure if I need the Zone Alarm toolbar. Thanks in advance for you responses!

Answer:Avast free and Zone Alarm free

Often we have versions here at Majorgeeks that are not so easy to find on the makers sites. The makers like you to download versions that offer a trial of the full versions or full suites. The ZA toolbar is a renamed version of the Ask toolbar, I consider it crapware but it probably helps pay for the freeware we all like; decline to install it anyway or uninstall it if it gets in via the backdoor.

Beware, there are also malware sites out there pretending to offer the real thing, too! Some of them look pretty authentic.

Answer:avast free,spybot s&d free and win defender

I haven't used spybot in many years, it got too glitchy and difficult to use for me...
I tested several Anti Malware programs years ago and chose Malwarebytes (MBAM) Pro, no regrets here.
If you're thinking of MBAM paid, you should get the PRO Lifetime license while you still can.

Newegg.com - malwarebytes pro

MBAM Premium (Ver 2) is an annual license (yearly fees).
I don't use Windows Defender, I use MBAM real time on all my systems.

For additional "real-time security" I also use:
WinPatrol - WinPatrol- Ruiware, LLC
EMET - Download Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit v3.0 from Official Microsoft Download Center

Can you open the Bitdefender program/interface, then take a screenshot of it to post it here so we can see what you're seeing? Also, many free Antivirus products will ask you to registry in order to use them. So they are free, they just ask you to register yourself in order to be able to use them.

So, I'm choosing a free antivirus software to use on my daily driver (I'm a vary advanced user) and I'm trying to decide between Bitdefender free and avast free.
First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?
Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything).
So which do you think I should go with? Thanks

Answer:Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

Hi Robo11 First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?It's false. Bitdefender is still actively developped and have quite a good share of the Antivirus market. About the buggy part, it's down to the user's experience. Personally, most of the experiences I had with Bitdefender were quite bad. It was buggy, hogging resources, hard to uninstall, etc. But for some, it might just be the "best Antivirus" they ever used. Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything). It's false as well. There's no reputable Antivirus company that would do such a thing. Also, avast! forums offers malware removal assistance in the same kind as BleepingComputer, and there's also UNITE members helping on its forums, so I really doubt that this would ever happen. If you're torn between these two products, since both of them are free, I would suggest you to give them both a try (one after the other, not at the same time) and see for yourself which one you like better. My personal choice goes to avast!, but that's just me. Which antivirus to put a bunch of SpyShelter Premium +Windows Firewall Control(binisoft) ?
Win7 x64 Other ? Thanks

Answer:BitDefender Antivirus Free vs Avast Antivirus Free vs Avira Antivirus Free

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM): draw, with the indication of Avira, since BitDefender takes overall a little bit less of CPU time, but consumes much more RAM.
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker): Avira has more features, configuration options and is generally more effective when it comes to the malware detection (Proactive and Reactive).
Overall Winner: Avira.
Edit: I've just noticed, that you've added Avast - as the third contestant - to BitDefender and Avira. Still Avira is the winner here. Avast is not too hungry for PC resources and perhaps has more features, but its engine is not so good, and its detection ratio usually lags behind both: BitDefender and Avira.

Answer:Difference between Kaspersky Free and Kaspersky Antivirus

the only difference between KAV and KAF is that KAV has system watcher = behavior blocker. system watcher is one of the most powerful weapons of kaspersky that's why they charge you for that
they both have phishing protection

your combo looks OK to me. I can recommend that
but I don't agree with Malwarebytes because it seems redundant to me. zemana as the second opinion scanner is sufficient enough. It's realtime protection is different from its on-demand scanner. You will get better result with on-demand scanning than the realtime protection

Should I use Windows Defender with Panda Free AV & Malwarebytes?

Is it unnecessary and/or redundant?

Will it cause conflicts with Panda & Malwarebytes?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Answer:Should I use Windows Defender with Panda Free AV & Malwarebytes?

Hi:

Windows Defender (WD) under Win7 is only a weak anti-malware application.
It does not offer much protection. And you still need at least a robust, real-time AV (either free or paid to supplement it.

Most 3rd-party AVs will at least partially or fully disable WD. I do not know whether that's the case for Panda.

As far as MBAM, you did not mention if it is Free or Premium.
Free will not conflict with WD or any other, real-time security application, as it is only a manual, on-demand scanner. MBAM Free provides no real-time protection.
Premium ought to be fine with both Panda and WD, but MBAM is without question much more robust than WD. IOW, I don't think you'll have any problem with WD + MBAM Premium, but MBAM will provide more protection.

HTH,
MM

Answer:avast! Free Antivius vs Windows Defender

If we're talking about Windows "10" Firewall/Defender, I might be inclined to go with Windows Defender/Firewall + some other realtime prot like Zemana over Avast AV. However, if we're talking about Windows 7, I'd go with AVAST. In my circumstances as a W7 user, I'd go with AVAST.

Apologies for the long post.

I am still using windows XP pro, unfortunately. (I tried to create an bootable Ubuntu trial disk at a friend's pc, in order to use the web that way, but unfortunately, my dvd player couldn't fully read the dvd-rom.) Meanwhile, I logged on in this unprotected state, to download a strong firewall like zonealarm.
Obviously, something happened because the next time I booted up to my computer, malwarebytes wouldn't start, Avast free was disabled and "locked" and my firewall (windows) was turned off. I disconnected my LAN, and tried to figure out what to do. I tried rebooting into safe mode, but that did not help.

At some point, I attempted a system restore, which turned out to successfully restore access to my virus protection. I was quite leery about going back online, however.

I ran Avast, and super antispyware, but they found nothing. I set a password for avast free. The next time I turned off and restarted my pc, Avast was again turned off, despite my previous system restore.

I enabled the web connection in order to install zonealarm. However it prevented me from accessing most websites, and I kept getting popups asking to access the web. I have k9 webfilter installed also. It seemed to me that there was some kind of conflict between zonealarm, firefox, and k9filter, although all were listed as trusted in the zonealarm settings. Finally, in frustration, I uninstalled zonealarm and despite the risk I came here to look for... Read more

Today I will show you small tip how to deal with avast free ads

Pros:
- No ads in avast UI, and probably no annoying popups
- AV components still work normally. Signatures and program updates are not affected - Tested
- Potentially less resource & bandwidth usage
Cons:
- Avast UI won't be able to connect to the internet: "The online content is unavailable"
- Must be unblocked to register a new 365-day free subscription
- (...to be added if any...)

Screenshots:

Spoiler: Expand

Steps:
1/ Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced settings
2/ Outbound Rules -> New Rule -> Program -> Next
3/ ?This Program Path? -> Browse... -> to Avast install directory (usually C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast) -> choose AvastUI.exe -> Next
4/ Block the connection -> Next -> Next
5/ "Name:" -> Type AvastUI -> Finish

You can do similar steps if you use other third-party firewalls, Make sure you block AvastUI.exe

Have fun

Hi
I don't know if this is a problem with my or Avast. The last few days Windows Action Centre keeps telling me my Virus Protection is turned off and won't let me turn it on. I use Avast free. In the meantime, every time I log on Avast keeps giving me a pop-up telling me I have a dodgy Add-on (Ad-aware) but it won't let me remove it without changing my homepage and search engine. I have uninstalled Avast and re-installed and got a day without either message (re Add-on or Windows saying no virus enabled). Now thinking I had better change my virus protection. Thinking AVG (want a free one!). Used this for several years in the past then it kept being at odds with something in Windows. Anyone any suggestions to either my above problems or a decent free virus protection? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows says no virus enabled (I use Avast Free)

At over a month since it hit the milestone of 100 million users globally, Avast! has released its latest lineup of security products, version 5.0. There are no less than three flavors to the new security solution: Free Antivirus 5.0, Pro Antivirus 5.0, and Internet Security 5.0, with the first one, as the moniker implies, available free of charge to customers. In fact, Avast! Free Antivirus is one of the most comprehensive security products offered completely for free, and the promise from the company building the solution is that version 5.0 takes its free offering to a whole new level.

Answer:Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0 Compatible with Windows 7

Actually been running it for two days now and it really does impress me. I have been an avira die hard but thought I would take this for a spin and must say it doesn't disappoint at all.

The gui is nice and easy to navigate. It has a small footprint and i don't even notice it running even with real-time scanner. It also comes with gamer mode to stop those pesky interruptions such as updates etc.

Overall "I" give it a 9 out of 10.

Confuse between Avast Free and Avast Internet Security .. In terms of memory usage. Which will use less CPU and RAM?
Can you help me?

Answer:Avast Free and Avast Internet Security ( in terms of memory usage )

I know that the free version is light weight but Internet Security may be higher considering that it uses a firewall and various other stuff. But to be honest I have no idea. I would recommend trying to trial version of Internet Security and see how it does and then try out the free version.

My brother in law who has a very weak knowledge of computers has obvious issues affecting his laptop's performance.  It is obviously infected by spyware, trojans and viruses.   I tried downloading the free malwarebytes to his computer to run a scan but it will not open.

I was able to download and use awccleaner to remove some infestations along with the free Norton Eraser but I trust Malwarebytes the most.

It is since running a bit smoother but I still want to run the scan.

I saw another topic that was locked. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/549399/malwarebytes-wont-start/

Using the information from that thread, I have used the clean uninstall tool from malwarebytes and have re-installed the application.

I downloaded the Farbar Recovery Scan tool for his 65 bit system and completed the scans as per the instructions.

I have pasted the FRST.txt in my next reply and then attached the Addition.txt in my reply.

Please advise if more information is needed.

I run both Windows Defender and Avast Free Anti Virus but I am wondering if I really need both of them running at the same time. Can I safely remove Windows Defender and rely on Avast Free to do the same job?

Answer:Windows Defender v Avast Free Anti virus

No you shouldn't run two AVs at the same time, it's asking for trouble. I'm surprised Defender didn't turn off automatically when Avast was installed. But yes, uninstall one. Just make sure it's Avast you uninstall and keep Defender, Avast is well known for causing BSODs whereas Defender doesn't.

State of the art scanning engine provides reliable protection against viruses, spyware and other forms of malicious software.
Real time anti-rootkit protection
Unique "on access" technology checks all kernel-mode drivers that the operating system is loading for signs of rootkit behavior. This enables even unknown rootkits to be detected and stopped before they can do any damage.
avast! Community IQ
Most samples we process come from sensors deployed throughout the avast! community in the Behavior shield and anti-rootkit modules. This is a unique source of data made possible only thanks to our huge user base. Most of the collected samples are analysed by a number of automated processes and only a small fraction of the samples need to be processed manually by our virus analysts.
Code emulator
When a suspicious executable is encountered (during both on-demand and on-access scanning), avast! is able to emulate the program?s code in an isolated environment. The code emulator is used for two purposes. First, it is used for generic unpacking. Secondly, it is used in the heuristics engine. Technically, this is done using dynamic translation, a method much faster than traditional emulation techniques.
Heuristics engine
Starting with version 5.0, avast! features a new heuristics engine designed to proactively detect malware undetectable with normal definitions. The heuristics engine is able to cover both binary (executable) and script malware.

Just a quick question, or two. Sorry for my ignorance. I've been reading some of the topics here but cannot seem to find an answer so I'll ask.
Can I have Win defender, Avast Free Home edition and MalwareBytes all installed on my machine with no conflicts? I know I should only run scans with one at a time, just making sure that they can be installed okay.
Also, I know some or all of them have a type of "Resident Shield", which one should I use? Or should I let all of them run?
Thanks!

Answer:Windows Defender, Malware Bytes, Avast Free

Hello Tom_Slick,

As far as I know there is no problem running those tools. However it should be mentioned that malware bytesis on demand and as such wont pick up any malware unless you tell it to scan for it.

What are you using for a firewall?

The report says it is a rootkit. I couldn't place it in the chest. It gave a warning which I did not write down but amounts to "cannot do that". I ended up selecting repair as I didn't want to delete it without knowing what it was. It then restarted and did a bootscan.
I'm posting to find out what that thing is, and if I need to go further. I updated and am scanning since it restarted after the bootscan.

Thanks

Hi

A friend gives me an Avast Premium license for 8 months. I am using a free combo with Comodo Firewall (Cruelsister settings) and Avast (Jack settings) and I have doubts about which option protects me better.

I donīt know the quality of the Avast firewall, I also donīt know the level of its sandbox and on the other hand, Comodo Firewall is not comfortable to maintain, since it blocks legitimate programs, browser extensions, and even Windows updates.

I know I can have Sandboxie installed on my computer to act on demand, but what I'm most interested in knowing is what configuration do you advise me regarding protection.

Thank you in advance

Answer:Avast Premier vs Comodo Firewall + Avast free

Avast is sux better totaly change it to other software... go use fully Comodo and instal free zemana and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for o/d scan. if you dont like comodo sandbox you can use free version of sandboxie at last.

I'm a former Bitdefender Internet Security user. Looking to experiment with other products. I want to know what is the best choice for my Windows 10 lap. I don't want my machine to get slow but need enough protection. Also, need to mention that I plug my lap to my office network so need protection from others possibly infected machines in the network.

Answer:Avast Free + Windows 10 Firewall vs Bitdefender Internet Security

I believe it is not a correct comparison between free and paid products.
BIS is a great security suite, all in one, effective and very configurable but a bit heavy on the system.
Avast is one of the best free AV, and if it is configured in hardened mode (aggressive), it provides very solid protection.
The Windows firewall does its good job, even if it is not easily configurable, but you can use third-party applications like Windows Firewall Control or Glasswire, to better manage it.

Computer use: internet, entertainment, games, games and again games Smile
Computer specification: sufficient (4 cores, 8 GB RAM, unfortunately HDD)
Budget: only free software

I would expect Polish language version.

What do you think about built-in Windows Defender - is it a good solution?

I thought to install Unchecky, which will be protect from accidental installation of toolbars, malicious search engines and other junk.

For the browser of course I would like to install uBlock Origin to minimize the risk of clicking malicious ads and redirecting to the infected pages.

Do you recommend any extension that shows the site reputation? WOT (Web of Trust) or SiteAdvisor from McAfee or something?

Anything else?

As for learning curve, ease of use, Windows defender hands down is as simple as it gets. If you would like to secure the system, then place the Windows 10 account on a Local account and not Admin, in the security center in App & Browser control "provided you are on the Creators update, you can switch "Check Apps and Files" from Warn to Block. Adding Ublock to the browser is also a good idea, as you are probably aware of the multitude of filter choices, and also last but not least, back ups of the system, just in case.

This will be about as kid friendly as you can make it.

Ok, here is what I am trying to do here. I have avast free. Version 7 will not let you use the auto scan function. I found where someone posted (http://www.dposorio.com/blog/173/ho...ic-scans-with-free-version-of-avast-on-vista/ ) instructions to add a task to Windows Task Scheduler but it was for Avast 4 under Windows Vista. I am trying to do this same thing with Avast 7 under Windows 7 64bit. They say the path should be something close to this -------> C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 , That path will not work because with my setup when you get to the ( Alwil ) it goes off track. I have and am still looking for the correct path here but wanted to know if someone out here knew the file name in version 7 that will trigger a scan using Windows 7 Task Scheduler. Any ideas are appreciated.

I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall goal of this site to start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies, music and software/games.
I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit/support pirating websites,
but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway
(And also for people like me that Don't want to steal, but also don't want to pay more than I have to)

If you had avast before, you are used to it, and this does not slow down your PC, go for it. Defender in W10 is quite good, but Avast well tweaked (you have lot of posts in MalwareTips) will offer you a very good protection.

Real World System Impact
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker)

If we're talking about Windows "10" Firewall/Defender, I might be inclined to go with Windows Defender/Firewall + some other realtime prot like Zemana over Avast AV. However, if we're talking about Windows 7, I'd go with AVAST. In my circumstances as a W7 user, I'd go with AVAST.

The one thing I noticed when using AVG for scanning "My Computer" scanned maybe half the number of files?? If not less...compared to KAS!! Could not find an option on AVG to add additional stuff to scan.

I was and am still using COMODO BO Clean & SpywareBlaster and Windows Firewall All updated to latest versions. Please let me know if this is a decent setup.

I'd like to know if the Lappy would be MORE secure if I shift to the latest KAS Internet security Package as opposed to hanging on to AVG free. .

Thanks very much for any advice.

>> I'd like to know if the Lappy would be MORE secure if I shift to the latest KAS Internet security Package as opposed to hanging on to AVG free. Thanks very much for any advice. sikvik <<

I'd stay with AVG Free if I were you. I've used it since 2004 and I've never had a virus get through the AVG defenses on any of my 3 computers. It has caught a few things (while I was online) and "healed" them before any damage was done; but nothing has gotten through as yet. Additionally, just to be on the safe side; once a month I also use an "online virus check" called BitDefender Online Scanner - Free Online Virus Scan

Please Note: AVG 7.5 Free is out of date. Use AVG AntiVirus Free Edition 8.0 instead.

>> I was and am still using COMODO BO Clean & SpywareBlaster and Windows Firewall All updated to latest versions. Please let me know if this is a decent setup. <<

Sounds Good - but I'd add a software firewall if you do not already have one. Windows Firewall alone is very limited IMO.

Good Luck!

Answer:Windows Keeps Reporting that Antivirus is Turned Off, and cannot enable real-time shields on Avast! free version.

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE:... Hi all!

I just purchased a Dell computer with Windows 7. I immediately downloaded avast! Free. Shortly after, I realized that something called Windows Defender was also running. Not knowing exactly what this was and knowing you should not run two anti-virus resident programs at the same time, I turned off Defender real-time protection and the auto scan.

I posted over on avast! forums asking if these are two things that could run together or not. At present, there seems to be a difference of opinion on the answer. Since I was familar with this great site here and someone over there referenced a thread on this subject here (from 2009), thought I'd ask you good folks since that 2009 thread is so old.

What exactly in the Windows Defender that runs on Windows 7? I've read that it's an anti-spam thing, not anti-virus. Regardless of that, is it safe to run that real-time protection and leave auto-scan on while running avast! Free (or any resident anti-virus for that matter)? And if it's safe, is there any real need to run it? (I also use Malwarebytes, but not as a resident program.)

Thank you!

Pam

Hi and Welcome -
Please read This Topic By quietman7 with directions on the New Windows Defender.
It includes details + links to more information + what you can use as extra protection -

That topic is generally more related to the Windows 8 version, as Win7 is more suited to private / other programs.

With respect to the Free Antivirus of the Year 2017 competition, we've a thread series where users of the various products will be joining together to state the Pro's and Con's of each antivirus software and why they think it was a contender or not for the Free Antivirus of the Year 2017.

In this thread we'll talk about the Pro's and Con's you have found about Kaspersky Free Antivirus. It achieved the Second Spot in the Poll conducted recently.

The first post will be updated by me [or the mods] with what user's think is good and bad about the product, so an informed decision can be made for newcomers.

Answer:Kaspersky Free Antivirus - Pro's & Con's

Hello,

I'm really like kaspersky products, but sometimes get me angry
So what you ask:

Pro:
- Light on system (yes in fact it is)
- Good signatures
- Really good Cloud
- Good virus removal ability
- Good web protect

Cons:
- No behavior block (but has heuristic)
- Ads sometimes
- Good alternative for Windows Defender but not paid or other free AV.
- Protection is good enough just for advanced users only i think.

As much as I've used and advocated for certain free AVs over the years, I could not help but notice that one paid AV suite consistently dominated numerous protection tests, namely Kaspersky Internet Security. The protection scores of KIS were not usually significantly higher than the free AVs, but they were consistently higher. It has achieved the highest award (Advanced +) from AV-Comparatives in every Real-World Protection test since 2009, unmatched by any other AV product, paid or free.
So when Kaspersky recently released a free version of its AV, I had to take it for a spin. I downloaded the latest Kaspersky Free (KF) version [18.0.0.405(b)] from: usa.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus
Requirements
OS: Windows XP or higherNon-commercial use onlyFull system requirements: usa.kaspersky.com/free-antivirus
Test Platform:
Dell Latitude E5410 notebook running Windows 7 Professional/sp1 64-bit, and IE 11 (without add-ons). Intel Core i5 @2.40 GHz, 4 GB RAM, SATA HDD: 160 GB. Real-time protection was Windows software firewall, WinPatrol PLUS and Malwarebytes 3 Premium. All Microsoft and 3rd party  programs/patches were up-to-date.

Download and Installation:
Both processes (154 MB installer) went quickly and smoothly, taking about 5 minutes. The only decisions one needs to make during installation are to select a language, whether to enable the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN)- basically to send anonymized data back to Kaspersky, and whether to enable Kaspersky Secure C... "Kaspersky has finally launched its free antivirus software after a year-and-a-half of testing it in select regions. While the software was only available in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, China and in Nordic countries during its trial run, Kaspersky is releasing it worldwide. The free antivirus doesn't have VPN, Parental Controls and Online Payment Protection its paid counterpart offers, but it has all the essential features you need to protect your PC. It can scan files and emails, protect your PC while you use the web and quarantine malware that infects your system."

Kaspersky's paid AV has dominated in protection tests of security products by independent organisations for some years now. Now that it offers a free version, it looks like I will have to give it a test run.

As of lately I have been receiving random pop-ups on my computer. They usually come whenever I open internet explorer. I use kaspersky and it's updated, i've scanned the deep system scan in safe mode and it found nothing. However, my computer's overall slower performance and random pop-ups come feom a virus. AOL and Kaspersky have got together and re-leased a 'FREE' version of Kaspersky...(No you dont need to be an AOL customer)
This is basically Kaspersky slimmed down and re-skinned but offers the same excellent detection engine as Kaspersky
Protects against Viruses, Worms, Trojans, Spyware, Adware, Jokes, Hacktools etc

This has to beat AVG as the 'Best Free Anti-Virus Program' Available
to get license key you have to register with email address, I may suggest using a 2nd free email address as the EULA specifys that you may get SPAM from AOL and other companys so using a 2nd email address (just for these sort of pruposes) will avoid your usual email address from being bombarded with SPAM

Kaspersky is one of the best detection engines on the market and has won awards for its detection rate, namely the 'VB 100%' Award which means it can detect 100% of the Viruses in the Viruslist.com

Starting earlier today, Kaspersky Free on a few (but not all ) machines started triggering a high threat level IPS event.

False positive? Either way this level of triggering of security can cause me some issues. Strange that it is not triggering on all machines, just a few. Perhaps some aren't updated yet or something.

Inbound to WAN1 from 37.48.82.67. Machine OUTBOUND to dnl-16.geo.kaspersky.com

It seems to have subsided a bit. But I am concerned because Fortinet IPS is not known to issue false positives for Medium/High/Extreme events. Any false positive prone events are under 'Info' category which most people leave off.

Hi.
Since they do not give us support in the forums or by phone. I ask the question here. The Opera browser with its VPN enabled makes the antivirus does not analyze the web. Do not pass the AMTSO test. No VPN works well. If someone knows a solution very grateful in advance.
Greetings.

Hi I got "Kaspersky 30 day free trial" and all was fine until the licence ran out. I uninstalled it (or tried to anyway) but the uninstall failed 3 quarter way through! Theres a file in C/programs called Kasperskylab and I cant rename/remove or delete it.
The main problem was I got Avast antivirus but it wouldnt install fully due to Software conflicts or something (I cant recall exactly the phrase) then my pc froze and kept freezing on startup until I used safe mode and removed Avast.
Obviously I cant install a new antivirus until I lose Kasperskylab but as I say I cant delete or rename it etc, any ideas how I get rid?

Thanx in advance

Howdy,I recently scanned my computer with Kaspersky Free Online Scan. The scan log indicated that I have a Trojan that has infected my computer. Below are the two items infected by the same Trojan.C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\72BF65DB.tmp Infected: Trojan.Java.ClassLoader.ao skipped C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\72C20FD8.tmp Infected: Trojan.Java.ClassLoader.ao skipped I searched for information about this Trojan and got the following results. (In order to enlarge the screen shot below to make it legible ,I had to disable my pop up blocker)I removed Norton Security 2006 from my computer over a month ago. It looks as if these items are in quarantine somewhere in my computer. After the scan I re-started my computer in safe mode and ran a scans with SpyBot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 Free and SUPERAntiSpyware. The combined results were three tracking cookies.I then re-started in normal mode and ran a scan with Windows Live Care and Housecall, they came up clean. Are these items harmless ? I ask that because it seems to show they are quarantined. Regardless, I would like to do away with these items.Could someone please tell me how to locate these files (?) and how to delete them ?Thank You for your time.Dennis XP Home, SP-2, IE-7

So I've been trying to install kaspersky free for the past few hours but to no avail.

The installer runs fine but during the downloading phase of it, it downloads normally for 51.8mb out of the 156.6mb then starts to "download" very fast all the way to 156.6 mb, after that the installer states that the installer is corrupted and the only fix that I can find online is download the installer and try again. But I've done that at least 5 times already but I keep running into the same issue

I've also deleted the previous installers before trying again, cleared cache using ccleaner, manually searched for my remnants and deleted them before trying again. I've also manually disabled windows defender before the install. But all the while I still come back to the same issue.

Has any faced this issue before? Any other fixes you think I should try?

I forgot to take a screenshot of it but it seems that other people are facing it too, here is a screenshot from the kaspersky forums that matches what I see as well

WHAT'S NEW IN KASPERSKY FREE

Kaspersky Free provides the following new features:
There is now protection against infection while the operating system is being restarted.
Added notification from Web Anti-Virus regarding pages containing adware or legitimate software that can be used by criminals to damage your computer or personal data.
Improved speed for certain installation scenarios, the first startup, and the first update of the application.
The application now waits a longer amount of time before displaying a notification about outdated databases and application modules when the computer wakes from sleep mode.

MAIN KNOWN ISSUES
If the "Always scan encrypted connections" check box is selected, the application will scan encrypted connections even if you have paused protection.
If the application was installed in Windows 7 and you upgraded the operating system to Windows 10 but now want to revert back to Windows 7, you are advised to uninstall the application and install it again after reverting back to Windows 7.
On certain websites, the application may block the download of additional pages in pop-up windows or frames. To resolve this issue, clear the "Inject script into web traffic to interact with web pages" check box in the network settings of the application.
If interactive protection is disabled, tasks for processing threats on your computer from the My Kaspersky portal might not be performed.

Answer:Is there a free version of the game Sims free play for the TABLET with WINDOWS 8.1?

If you are running desktop OS on your tablet, no. Sims Free Play appears to be mobile OS only... iOS and Android.
You can only install Desktop software in a Desktop environment.
?One alternative is to install an Android emulator like BlueStacks, but it may lag and cause other performance issues due to limited tablet hardware.
