DNS server changes to static without permission

Question: DNS server changes to static without permission

Hey everyone,

Thanks for this great website. This will actually be my first post here. I am having issues with my DNS configurations, under the IPV4 properties. I originally had it set to receive the dns server automatically, and now it is constantly changing to receive dns server through a static IP. The static Ip address that keeps getting assigned is 216.146.36.240. I do have internet access, but I my outlook which is setup with a exchange email address is not connecting because of this issue. I noticed that my homepage did change once, but I dont know if it was because of a software that I downloaded or virus related. Honestly, I am not sure what is causing this.

Things that I have already tried:
Booted into safemode and ran rkill followed by malwarebytes and superantispyware.
I didnt know I wasn't supposed to run it on my own, but I ran Combofix (sorry)
I ran Microsoft Security Essentials
I ran from a command line ipconfig /flushdns, and rebooted.

Thanks guys

Preferred Solution: DNS server changes to static without permission

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: DNS server changes to static without permission

I thought it was dyndns.org that was the issue, and i just realized it wasn't.
There is a software called Sendori, I uninstalled it. And that seemed to be the problem.

Answer:The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID

Hi Ewa,
It's just a example instead of your real ID.
The ID of yours {316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97} must be in that list. Have you attempt to find it?
I have search it on my lab computer(Windows 8.1)as below:

Agh!
I keep getting this error everytime I try to get onto a certain site:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

And I am not sure why. I can access the site when I am on a different network or through a proxy, but not from my home network. Is is possible that I was blocked from this site or something? Is there a way to get around this (other than a proxy)?

Answer:You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Can you tell us the site or give us a link to it so we can see if others get the same error.

Cheers!

I run a windows 2003 server. I have about 10 computers connected to the network. Everything was working great, until I took a vacation. When I came back one of the computers could not connect to the network. Everytime I try to go to the network I get the message "\\servername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." I have not changed anything with the server. I have tried disabling the firewall on the computer that cannot connect. I reformatted the computer and the message still appears. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:\\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use etc etc

It may have been dropped from the domain, happens from time to time. Try removing it from the domain and readding it.

Hey gang, hopefuly somebody can help me with this:

I have a Win8 x64 rig with a wireless card connecting to Linksys router connected to a cable modem. I also have Hamachi and Teamviewer installed, they add their own setup to the network page, don't know if they are the culprits but with DHCP I have no problem.

Everything works well until I try to set up a static IP on my PC (if I enable DHCP for IPv4 - no prob).

What I did: Set a static IP to avoid conflict with other PCs, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (auto fills), gateway = my router's IP (192.168.1.1), DNS servers = took from my ISP's site (also tried Google public DNS).

What happens: my PC connects to the wifi as I can browse the router's settings page. But any website I try to access leads to a DNS server not responding. It has been driving me crazy... As soon as I reset back to obtain IP automatically everything works.

Pleaseeeeeeee

Answer:Static IP = DNS server not responding

You should assign the local static IP in your router, not in your PC. I don't use linksys router but there must be a section called "LAN" settings and that's where you assign local static IP for each of your devices

Dear all:
This question is about giving right permission for users to access a folder, which contains a MS Access file database. In this case, without using MS Access to grant Read/Write rights, I can use Server OS to control user permissions of Read/Write.

However, it has happened a few times that suddenly some of us who have Administrator rights were only able to read the data but not able to alter; in other words, our permission rights have changed from Administrator to limited users. (Admin has both read and write, limited users only have read only).

I checked on the Server end, the permissions (for accessing that folder) are given correctly (assigned within Active Directory).

I was trying to figure out how it happened, and suddenly, I was able to view the database as Admin again.

There seems to be a glitch with my network across MS platform or something... sometimes either I cannot view the computers/shared folders on network, or sometimes I cannot access certain directories with right permissions.

Gladly this does not happen often (like once a month). But still, I would like to fix it. If anyone knows anything about it, please feel free to share your knowledge -)

Thank you~~

I now get this error message trying to access network resources from a laptop that used to work just fine. My wife's similarly configured laptop continues to work fine. I regularly share drives and printers across all machines and all appear to work except for this laptop. I have found that I can pring the other computers without issue if I use the ip address and can "net use" the drives directly by specifying the ip address rather than the computer name. However, any attempt to use the computer name fails (as above or as a "System error 53 has occurred" in a command prompt). Using the [email protected] solves part of the problem but I cannot find a similar [email protected] workaround to get to my network printer successfully.

All computers are running XP professional. I have tried disabling firewalls. The laptop is a work-configured laptop (as is my wife's) and works fine connected to all manner of networks. As I mentioned, this machine worked fine a unil I noticed an issue about a month ago. This problem persists through re-boots.

Here is nbtstat -n and ipconfig /all from my laptop. Any and all ideas much appreciated.

Clear the Cookies, etc for whatever web browser you are using. If using any third party security software, make sure that it is not blocking that website. Basic stuff that you need to go and check to make sure that it is not one of those two items causing it.

Hi, I hope the title didn't confuse you...
I'm totally new to using Windows Server 2003 (or any windows server edition) but I do have a basic understand of networking.

Ok, so here's what's going on... I have a machine with Windows Server 2003 running an Exchange Server in a office with 5 workstations attached. The server is being used for a basic outlook calendar across the various workstations, nothing major. Our current ISP provides us with a Static IP address. The party that installed and configured the server set it up to run the DHCP server on the server PC itself. As in, the machine running windows server is also running a software DHCP server for the entire network.

THE SETUP: As of right now we have a wall port (internet access) with a cable running to a 8 port unmanaged netgear switch that has cables hooked up to the 5 workstations as well as the server itself. Pretty simple.

THE QUESTION: How do I configure the ISP static settings on the DHCP Server portion of the Server PC? We may be getting a new ISP with a dynamic address OR a new static address.

WHAT I'VE TRIED: I've tried configuring the IP address on the Server PC the way I would via the NIC adapter settings but it already has a internal IP address from the DHCP Server running on that PC so changing that was no good. I guess what I'm basically looking for is a screen like this (I hope you're familiar with the configuration pages of Linksys Routers)

I set up a VNC for my father in his office. He has a Netopia Cayman 3546 series modem with a router built in. Currently, DHCP is enabled. The problem is that the IP changes every couple of days which means the pinhole in the router also has to be changed. Is there a way to set one IP address for the VNC computer but still have DHCP enabled for the rest on the network? If not, what would be the best way to go about this. Thanks.

Yes you do want Outlook Express to act as a server, go into the program window in Zone Alarm and make sure you have four ticks in OE line, have a look in Start Up (RUN>MSCONFIG>STARTUP) and see what you have running this could be causing slow download, but Hotmail is not the speediest.

I would give it a few days and see if it's up again.

Ok, I posted earlier that I needed a solution to my problem, well I found one. I got the eval version of windows server 2003 (180 days to use it), my school is looking into purchasing a license as I type this.

Anyway, onto my problem. I have everything set up and running, DHCP server, DNS server, Active Directory, etc. Plus I have all the users created. Everyone can login (I have mandatory profiles set) and do their work and that's fine. However, here's my problem, I created a share directory called "Users", this directory contains all the user folders (by their full name, so "John Smith" for example). I have set the correct permissions and everything (I believe) but people get an error everytime they try and save, something along the lines of permissions not being set or the disk being read only.

Just to be clear, if person X is logged in, and they try and get into person Z's folder they get access denied (and vice versa )

I have each folder set (under the security tab of the properties box) so that "Administrators" and that particular user have FULL access to that folder, it's subfolder, and it's contents (on the advanced tab I have deselected the inherit permissions thing).

So any ideas on why they can't save in their designated folder?

share permissions take the most resterictive between ntfs permissions and sharing permissions no? make sure you have them configure correctly to allow the onwers to write to their dir.

If I am making the resource available to everyone (with full read/write permissions), how can someone be denied access? Am I missing a step here?

Answer:Windows 2000 server permission issue

permissions on a share is a separate set of information than login information. If you share something with everyone, it does not mean that everyone can log into a workstation. They will have to log in as a valid user, then connect to the share from there.

Looking for some networking experts. I now have two static ip address from my isp. I am wanting to run direct Access on my server 2008 r2 box. I am not sure how to set up my router and two nics on my server. I currently have both nics with static ipv4 address, but think I want to use one for internal and another one for external. Not sure what to do with the router either. Thanks any help would be greatly appritiated.

Answer:How to use 2 static ip address on one server? Network experts

In most cases the reason you would need more than one IP on the server is due to port binding. What are you going to do with the two IPs? If you are going to use one nic as internal the both IPs will need to be bound to the external nic. When you say router are you meaning a commercial class network traffic router or a simple wireless NAT/firewall router?

IF you are using a wireless router you need to set its external WAN to one of the IP addresses. Also depending on model you can bind additional IPs to that router so it will accept traffic destined for that host and pass it through to your server. You would want to set your server up with some internal IPs and do the port forwarding to translate/map the public external IP addresses into your internal private IP addresses. I recommend setting the server up in the DMZ outside of your internal network ip range. There is some pertinent info missing for me to give a more concise response.

I have just set up a computer with Windows 7, and I'm apparently missing something simple, but I just can't find it.

I installed Windows 7 on the machine and everything works great. I then joined the computer to a 2003 Server domain. Everything still appeared to work fine. However, when I log into the domain on the Windows 7 computer, I don't have the correct permissions on the local machine.

I can access the domain. The login works fine. There are no errors. However, when I try and access anything on the local drive, like explorer.exe, it tells me that I don't have the permissions to access it. I can run some programs, in some directories (like Program Files), but if I try and run anything in the Windows directory, I don't have permission. I can access things on the domain, and I can even use Firefox to view the contents of domain machines, mapped network drives, and even the local C drive. I just cannot run anything that's in the local Windows directory.

I can access the local drive using either the domain administrator account, or the local machine administrator account. However, using either of those accounts, I'm not allowed to change permissions on that folder! I can see that the folder is set as read only, but when I attempt to remove the read-only flag (using either account), it tells me that I don't have permission to do that.

I've also tried to give the domain user administrator permission on the local machine, but that has no effect either. That part really con... Read more

This thread at TechNet seems to relate to your problem. It mentioned something about you need to set the password the same as the Administrator's password of the Windows 2000 system. And also you need to change the NTLM authentication level in Windows 7. Even though you are on server 03 this may still apply.

Hey guys,

This has been quite the ongoing problem at one of my clients. We have a building which houses all of the servers. We also have two off site locations, both utilize Cisco 1811's which connect to another Cisco 1811 in the MDF. For whatever reason, the computers at the VPN clients can be joined to the domain without a problem, they can communicate with most servers without a problem. They are able to ping the exchange server by Name, FQDN, and IP Address, without a problem...

But whenever I attempt to configure outlook to connect to the exchange server, it states that it can't resolve the name. We do have an Isa Server 2004 that controls all of the connections, and my senior co-worker (who knows more about this than I probably ever will) configured it so everything could work.

I know that one of the locations worked, then stopped at one point. My Co-worker made some kind of change in all of the 1811's, however while it worked temporarily, the routers wound up locking their connections as they began talking to themselves in an endless loop. I didn't really note too much going on with the firewall when attempting to configure Outlook, except for something about the SSL Tunnel failing. It fails because of a rule which is set to allow clients unlimited access from internal network to internal network. When attempting to connect, it says the client username is anonymous.

I've even attempted to configure a new rule that allows t... Read more

Hi,

I've build a Dell PowerEdge 2950 NAS box with Windows 2000 Server SP4. I've set a static IP for both integrated NIC's. But both connections don't work. I can't ping anything except for its own address and loopback.

But if I let Windows assign an IP address automatically, then both connections work.

I've checked that the static IP's I've set are not being used. The dns ip addresses are the same for all the other servers.

I've tried updating to the latest Broadcom NIC drivers but static IP still doesn't work.

Dell has switched to a new motherboard and the same issue appears. Anyone have any ideas on why this is occurring. Any help would be much appreciated.

Now the next thing I have to do is (according to portforward.com) "Enter the dns servers we prevoiusly found into the two DNS Server boxes".

Well when I type "Ipconfig /all" into Command Prompt it gives me THREE DNS servers, not TWO as shown below.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I signed up specifically because I was told this place was great for helping people with really intractable problems.

I have a user, Markus, he's an engineer, and he likes folder structures. He's got a nice one set up on my server with very well-defined permissions for several groups for his engineering projects.

His computer: Core 2 Duo machine running Windows Vista, non-SP1.
Server is a Dell PowerEdge running Server 2003 SP2 with all the latest updates.
We are in a Windows 2003 domain which is running pretty smoothly.

Starting a few weeks ago, he has been having problems very sporadically where a file that has has been working with and saving frequently, in a directory he has full permissions to access, refuses to save over its previous incarnation.

To break that down: he'll be in Word, say, and he saves his file every fifteen minutes, and at some point it will refuse to save over the existing copy and it will instead pop up the Save As box. Happens in Word, Illustrator, and Pro-E, so it's not program specific.

It ONLY happens for this user, none of the others. This means to me that it is either user-specific or OS-specific, as he's the only one running Vista, too.

Some of the programs will spit out an oddly-named file (like "a3bdfe8c") before giving the error. I assume that this is because the program is attempting to save the file and then write over the old one, in an attempt to make it an ato... Read more

We're in a domain at work and a user have a folder on the server that he usually syncs with from his computer. The problem is that when I right click on the folder and choose "syncronize" it gives me "permission error".

Hi

I have got an Active Directory (2003) environment with an exchange server (2003) ,,,,,,all workstations XP Prof were assigned static ip addresses as below :

IP address : 192.168.0.x,,,,,,,x has got different value form one PC to another

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway : 192.168.0.1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,router ip address

Preferred DNS server : 192.168.0.50,,,,,,,,,,,,,,server ip address

Alternate DNS server : empty

I believe (but not sure) because I have done that while ago , when I chose option : " Obtain DNS server address automatically" when I set outlook 2003 would not know how to retrieve emails from the exchange, therefore I had assigned DNS manually and I had pointed to the server.

Since DNS is assigned manually to each workstation and since DNS is pointing to the server , what happened recently the server was down , all workstations would not able to go to the internet because of DNS.

Now if would need to assign ip address to "Alternate DNS server " option which DNS should I use ?

Although I am going to try that when I get a chance ,,,,would option "Obtain DNS server address automatically" overcome this issue ?

Thanks

Answer:Alternate DNS server option for a worksation that has static ip address assigned

A) Either configure whatever you use for DHCP correctly (router or server) and have it hand out the correct addresses.

B) set a static DNS setting on each PC to point to the router and ensure that it has the correct DNS settings for your ISP

C) Use a public DNS server from an ISP or OpenDNS and set that address statically as the secondary dns server on each workstation.

Gents,

After some monkeying around I was able to successfully setup a nice LAMP server used for streaming media to my devices inside my LAN. I just purchased a new fire-breathing Dual Band 450 Mbps router with a 500mhz processor for my internal LAN. I am trying to re-setup everything a little different.

Current setup:
Motorola 3347 ADSL2+ WAN modem
Static IP 67.XXX.XXX.XXX
Internal address: 192.168.0.1
Firewalled with open ports for various server processes: 22,80,etc...

This connects directly to my Linksys WRT54G (Which will change to my new router)
External Static IP 192.168.0.50 (To Motorola)
Gateway (To Motorola) 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Internal DHCP Server Setup
Internal IP (To connect via my macbook or other device to Linksys): 192.168.1.1
All devices have a dynamic ip in the range 192.168.1.X

I have my LAMP server set statically on 192.168.1.100 internally with port forwarding from the Motorola to the Linksys (192.168.0.50) and then from the linksys to 192.168.1.100

This is overly complicated and really redundant. I have been looking at different methods of setting this new router up which has an awesome processor. I do a lot of UPnP NAT table stuff so I would like to enable NAT on the new router and disable it on the Motorola.

Question: How do I setup my systems so that all devices are on the same subnet and that the Motorola is simply a passthrough device to my new router? I would like:
1) Motorola to be 192.168.0.1
2) New router to be 192.168.... Read more

It's the newbie problem of accessing a non-static method from a static context. However, I can't seem to fix the problem. The program "should" just create a PNG and JPG file of an image I created.

Here is the code:
Code:

import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
import java.io.*;
import java.awt.Graphics2D;
import java.awt.image.RenderedImage;
import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
import java.awt.Color;
public class WriteText_PicTest {

public RenderedImage myCreateImage()
{
int width = 100; int height = 100;

// Create a buffered image in which to draw
BufferedImage bufferedImage = new BufferedImage(width, height, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);

// Create a graphics contents on the buffered image
Graphics2D g2d = bufferedImage.createGraphics();

// Draw graphics

g2d.setColor(Color.white);
g2d.fillRect(0, 0, width, height);
g2d.setColor(Color.black);
g2d.fillOval(0, 0, width, height);

// Graphics context no longer needed so dispose it
g2d.dispose();
return bufferedImage;
}

public static void main (String args[])
{

// Create an image to save

// Write generated image to a file

Answer:Solved: Newb Java Problem - non-static method cannot be accessed from static context

Just an FYI for anyone who might read this thread to find the answer to their own problem.

The solution was to make the method static. I could then use the first variable declaration 9see below) without any problem.

RenderedImage rendImage = myCreateImage();
Though, it still isn't clear to me why the method has to be static.

Hi folks,

This is my first network setup and i am hoping someone can help me with some issues. The setup is as follows:

Router: Netgear DG834GT ADSL

Computer 1: (Known as Maude)

Desktop
Celeron 434MHz CPU
512 Mb RAM
XP Home SP2
Wired to Router
Has USB Hard Drive that i want to use as a central data file storage space for the network.
Computer 2: (Known as Myrtle)

Desktop
AMD Duron 1.29GHz CPU
512Mb RAM
XP Home SP2
ASUS WLAN via USB
Computer 3: (Known as Martha)

Laptop
Celeron 1.86 GHz CPU
512 Mb RAM
Vista Home Basic
802.11g Mini Card Wireless Adapter

Computer 1 is in the living room and is used for email/browsing/word processing/IM and other relatively low demand applications and is the most likely to be switched on, hence the Networked Drive being attached to it.

Computer 2 is primarily the hub of my Recording Studio (grand name for a cobbled together hobby type affair) but is also used for email etc. It is located in an outbuilding but is no more than 7meters from the router and gets signal and link strengths that rarely dip below 50% and more likely average 65%

Computer 3 is my wifes college laptop and is only really part of the network so she can use the printer attached to computer 1 and back up her files on the networked drive.

All 3 computers communicate.

The biggest problem is the data transfer speeds between Computer 2 and Computer 1.

Computer 3 connects to both the other computers at the sort of speeds i would expect/hope (i.e.i click on a shared doc... Read more

Have looked at the other postings about Windows 7 and "You need permission" - this one seems new. I have a laptop and a desktop both running Windows 7, both part of HOMEGROUP.

The desktop has two hard drives (C and D), both shared with full access to EVERYONE.
I can see both but can only update the D drive on the desktop from the laptop. When I try any update (new folder, copy a new file in, etc.) to the C drive, I get the "You need permission" error.

Have tried turning off sharing then turning back on for the C drive and have compared the sharing between C and D - they appear identical. Snipit of C drive permission attached. Any thoughts or ideas on what else to try would be appreciated.

Answer:You need permission - happening on networked drive that has permission

Rather than sharing form the root of the C: drive you should be sharing from the C:>Users folder instead. This is the default setting for Windows and there are many good reasons for this.

For networked drives that were created under a different User name you would also need to allow for sharing using the "Security" tab of the C: drive. The link below shows you how.

You can also set this drive share up at the C:>Users location if desired.

Hello again, forever young MG Whiz-Kids,

I have a portable CD MP3 player by my bed. It has an a/c adapter, plugged in all the time. I leave a morning and night 'subliminal' CD inside the machine, and play it twice a day.
I usually have to eject the CD and rub it over my cotton pillow case and across my arm to try to get static off it. It skips from the static build-up, not from any scratches. Most days wiping it on cloth is enough, but on rainy days like today it seems impossible to keep it from doing that.

Recommend any cheap anti-static cleaning strategy??

I do clean the CD player lens with a dry cleaning disk pretty regularly.

While I'm on the subject, here's another Q : Does putting a paper sticker on the rough side of CD's keep them from scratching or skipping up ? Are they worth the money, time, and effort ?? Seems they get scratched from the top (printed) side easier than from the plastic rainbow side.....I heard the data is actually more near the underside of the printed side than outside the clear side. More vulnerable from above than below...T or F ???

Thanks folks, :wave nice to be back here again....

yours truly,

-scottportraits

A wire came loose in my laptop charger so I asked for a replacement, but the supplier was adamant that there was something wrong with the port in my laptop, not the charger (he was wrong), so they took it away to fix. Anyway, a member of their staff took my hard drive out to copy a couple of my files to a disk for me as I needed them asap and couldn't get my laptop charging. Apparently that's all they did.

Today I got my laptop back and things are not right. I am the administrator and there are no other user accounts on my computer. I am recognised as the administrator when I go on Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts. But now all of a sudden I can't access Music, Pictures, Videos or Documents from the start menu. It didn't let me and didn't come up with any error message. It also didn't let me see the properties of them or do any of the other right-click options. Stumbled upon this trying to fix my static and it helped it out a bit, not 100% though but thought i would share it.

Anyways;

goto your playback devices > click your speaker properties > advanced > and change the default format to a higher setting, such as 24 bit, 48000hz (studio quality)

thats it, and of course you can play around; if you have an alright sound-system you can tweak your eq. settings and such to compensate for playback quality.

I have a dilemma.

I have a static IP address set up on my router with the information provided by the ISP. We use a PDC running WS2k3 that acts as a DHCP server for the majority of our workstations. However, we have 3 machines that also have static IPs that are assigned also by our ISP connected to the router. We can see the 3 computers on the router but they are not able to access the internet. Network access is fine, but we cannot get them to access the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Hello there,

But the problem is, it stays as long as 15 minutes and then the same error occurs again. It keeps on occurring the entire day and so on and it's really a drag to keep reconnecting my net every 15 minutes.
So, any solution ?

I am going be moving all the shared folders on my Server 2003 file server to my new Server 2008 VM and want to do it in a way that will allow my clients to be able to access them as if nothing happened. I have been reading about the Windows FSMT (File Server Migration Toolkit) http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=10268 and it will copy over all the permissions and everything but I am not sure how to go about making sure the client will still be able to access the shares especially if they have mapped any of them. If i change the IP and host name of the new machine to the old one after the migration is complete and then shutdown the old server will everything run smoothly? What is the best way to go about doing this?

Answer:Migrate Server 2003 file server shares to new machine (Server 2008)

you can do this or you can change DNS so that the old server name points to the new server IP. You need to turn off StrictNameChecking

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]
"DisableStrictNameChecking"=dword:00000001

this means that you can name the server what ever you want but if you go to the old host name it will also take you to the new server.

Don't forget this needs to be completed and rolled out after the users log off but before they log back in

As old user move on and new users join make sure that you link them to the share via the new host name so eventually the old host name is fased out and you can remove the above reg key.

First, the important intro: I'm running two Win7 systems: my desktop runs 64bit Win7 Ultimate, the laptop is Win7 64bit home version. Both were clean installs, are routinely scanned for viruses, malware, hardware problems, regularly defragged, etc. I run lean machines; the only TSR (for all you DOS gurus!!) I run is Antivir (running in the background).

The problems

Most of us have seen these error msgs from time to time: "you need permission to perform this action", or "you require permission from the computer's administrator...", and less often "you cannot delete file as it is open in another....".

Every now and then, my computers tell me I cannot rename, delete, move, or open a particular folder or file. The folders//files in question are NOT system, hidden, page, shared, locked, etc. They could be something I've installed yesterday, a game for my wife for example, mp3s, whatever. For the love of Pete I can't figure out WHY this is happening!!!! But wait, there's more! This does NOT occur all of the time, but seems to be a hit and miss event...joy!

Example: A folder contains a bunch of files, plus one or two sub-folders. I click on the folder, tap the delete key, or use the context menu delete command, then one of the above errors pop up. OK, I open the folder, select all, tap the delete key, and poof, everything IS deleted. Back up one level, delete the folder. WTF is going on ? I may have to drill down to the lowest sub-folder l... Hey Guys,

so I went Start > Run > user controlpasswords2 and I set the full name of my account from Mitchell ****** to Mitchell I went to the last tab and I guess I accidentally scrolled my mouse down and it took me from the Administrator group and put me in the HomeGroup User group.

Now, I don't have permission to do anything. I'm the only administrator account on the computer. The other administrator account I disabled and now I'm stuck.

I've tried booting into safe mode but I made it in Msconfig that you can't see other boot options. I have no way of getting into Msconfig or boot.ini for that matter.

I've run out of ideas and I really don't want to reinstall Windows. How can I get into my computer? Can someone please give me some ideas?

I can't address my blue screen crashes without zipping these files . Any help would be appreciated

How do I give each pc permission to access files and what does the term no network path mean as both pc are connected to the internet??

Answer:Asking for permission

or a wired one?You'll need to run the networking wizard on both machines. Make sure you give each computer a unique name, but use the same work group name (MSHOME by default) on both.Then enable sharing on any files and/or folders which you want to share between computers. If you're sharing an Internet connection on these computers do NOT enable sharing on the root of a drive. i.e. don't share the whole of the C drive for instance. You enable sharing by right-clicking on the file or folder and selecting properties. Then select the sharing tab and choose the appropriate settings.

So I went to the control panel to delete the program. It did so but it is still in my program files. When I try and delete it there it says I need permission to rename, or remove the program. How do I get permission?Thanks,Peter

Answer:Need permission

Take ownership: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/BTW, Winrar is not malware - just add it to Trend Micro's trusted apps (I assume Trend has such an option)

Question: Permission...

I have three external hard drives and I am trying to transfer files and folders from one to the other.
But some of the folders won't transfer. Instead, I get a message saying "FILE ACCESS DENIED, YOU NEED PERMISSION TO PERFORM THIS ACTION. YOU REQUIRE PERMISSION FROM THE COMPUTER'S ADMINISTRATOR TO MAKE CHANGES TO THIS FILE".

I have no idea how this works and I need help. How to I transfer these files and how do I delete folders and files that need permission? How do I get permission?

I am and always have been the sole user and administrator for my computer (Lenovo T60 laptop with Vista.)

Vista often says that I "need to give permission" for something to continue. I give it, and it continues.

Here's what happened today:

I decided to combine several folders that I created into one parent folder, that I created.

These folders have various content. For example, one has documents, one has .mp3 files, one has faxes (.tif) one has .xls, a few have photos, etc.

All files moved without a problem except for one very large folder filled with image files. Vista says that I need administrator permission to move the folder, and I do not have it.

This does not make sense on so many levels!

What is the difference between this folder and other folders that contain images, besides size?

Why would I need to be an administrator to move this folder?

And why AREN'T I considered an administrator in this one instance?

Answer:I don't have permission to do THIS?

Try disabling UAC and see if that helps

After installing a new hard drive, (please read the following link:http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=R_Series_Thinkpads&message.id=3949#M3949)I'm  having Administrator Rights problems.  I tried to write jpegs on a CD and  I am getting the following message, "You do not have permission to save in this directory. See the administrator to obtain permission". I don't know what to do because I am the administrator and I own the ThinkPad R51E laptop and is still under warranty.  After installation of the new hard drive, everything was working fine. When an automatic Windows Update was applied I started to have this problem. I have done research, but have not found the fix.  Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered on the board. Kat

I realize that this has been addressed many times in the past. My case seems peculiar. I formatted my main drive and did a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64x. After doing so, some of my files on my secondary internal HD cannot be accessed. And what's interesting is that the lettering of the label are green, not black. I've tried changing the owner, I've tried setting up a new account and I cannot get access to these files. Some are vide, some are audio, and some are pictures. I've attached an image. You can see that 'Skull, Pump, and NT Cardio are a different color. Any thoughts?

Answer:Do not have permission

Hello sxdcfv, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The green text for the folder name indicates that the folder has been encrypted using the included Windows NTFS encrypted file system (EFS).

If you did not backup your EFS cetificate from your previous installation that you encrypted them in, then you will not be able to import and restore this EFS certificate to your new installation to have full access to them again.

You could see if the 30 day free trial of the Advanced EFS Data Recoveryprogram may be able to decrypt the files. If not, I'm afraid that you permanently lost access to them.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Is there a way to disable the asking for permission pop up that comes up everytime you try to install a program? For that matter it seems it askes all the time for permission (from Admin) eventhough it is the Admin account doing something.

I just got windows 7, and on a great many files and folders I try to access, move, or delete, it tells me that I don't have permission. Sometimes it tells me that I need to access the security tab for the particular file. Sometimes I have to try and change the permissions for the parent folder. Pretty much everything involves going into properties then two or 3 sub menus for each thing I want to access and delete. What total garbage! XP actually let me do what I want with my files. I am the owner and administrator, how do I get global 'permission' from whatever dictatorial entity is denying me access to my own computer? It's not practical to jump though tons of hoops for each file or folder I want to be allowed to modify. is there a way to turn off permission restrictions completely and finally for everything all at once? I have disabled UAC in control panel, that does not help.

Answer:I need %^&*@ permission??

Was this an Update install of Win/7 over a prior {XP,Vista}? Then we need to fix the ownership.

Before we jump into fixing, you should reserve day-to-day activities to a LIMITED account and reserve the ADMIN
account for performing maint/updates. With the Security setting enabled for UAC, attempts to install, modify or apply
updates will prompt you for permission - - I love it as I get to see who is changing what.

SO, using an ADMIN login, go to Control -> User Accounts and create a new login, set it as an ADMIN and give it the password you would like. Go to Services and set secondary logon as autostart.

You can now use Start -> Switch User and login to the new Admin and that will complete the creation of the profile of this ID.

Get to this point and I'll resume - -

Question: permission ??

Before I start my little rant, I'll have the reader understand...I'm fairly good with computers and have done due diligence on part to solve my problem before I came here to complain,....when I'm stuck some where I am smart enough to ask help of those smarter than myself, that said I would appreciate any responder...

I have a 3 tab external HD
I have an old xp machine for basic use
I have recently acquired a win laptop
I plan to use laptop and HDMI port to watch my movies off the 3tb
I plug HDD to laptop,laptop to TV
Windows start given me $#!+ about permissions
I HAVE done all the reading up on taking ownership/permission changing

My question is.. .is there anyway to "open" all the permission on my HDD so that I never have to deal with this bull$#!+ again??

I NEVER once asked windows to place this extra security, to me a password is good enough

My desktop is not the owner of my HDD
My laptop is not the owner of my HDD
The user account is not the owner of my HDD

I AM THE OWNER OF MY F(?#!NG HDD!

It is 3 tb ...millions of files and I don't think it proper for me to have to wait 2 hours taking ownership of files every time I switch the hard drive fro computer to computer,....any help would be nice,....THANKS

Answer:permission ??

I'm not sure if it's permissions for the hdd or the files on the hdd,
Best way to check if it's the files is to plug it back into the x-p machine and look at the properties of some of the folders,

I am running Windows XP (2005 I think) without any updates. I just restored and the computer crashes everytime I update. That's not why I am here though. Note: I have access to perform this on a Windows 7 Pro O.S.

Something happened to another computer I have with some valuable info. I know I should have had backup, but I didn't get to it in time. I have the hard drive in an enclosure. Because the drive was password protected I don't have permission to view certain files. I know how to gain permission in Windows 7, but I can't seem to open anything in it.

I want to use this drive an a back up, but I need to safely remove the files that are on it now. I want to still use the files once they are off. I want to gain full permission to use all files on any computer. Does this make any since? I would rather do it on the XP, but I can always use the Windows 7 O.S.

Question: need permission

when trying to remove programs from my hard drive i am presented with a message telling me "i will need permission from ******** to make any changes to that folder.
"********" being me, how do i grant myself permission?

Answer:need permission

Here is some info on taking ownership of files and folders.

Take Ownership of a File or Folder

This right-click menu application makes taking ownership very easy, though it also may make it too easy. Consider that if Windows is trying to prevent you access to a file there may be a good reason for it.

I few days ago my computer started restricting my access to programs and other various things on my computer. I could run some things if I ran them as admin. I ran my free version of AVG and it didn't pick up anything. I went to shutdown my computer and and told me I didn't even have permission to do that, I had to logoff and then restart. After restarting it got worse, the programs I could run as admin were resulting in the same problem. My next step was to reboot in safe mode and run avg there, it still didn't find anything. I did however notice that i could open programs like Google chrome and media monkey. My friend suggested that I download cccleaner because it could be a registry error or worm, but I did that in safe mode and still nothing.I'm hoping to avoid a system restore and I'm sorry if I haven't fulfilled proper forum posting or anything, I'm new.

Question: permission

I have a computer I purchased from an estate, and I changed  the user name to my name with admistrator rights, but when I try to install programs it tells me I don't have permission needed to install and shuts me out.

What do I have to do to get these rights?

Thank you

Answer:permission

Clean install is the typical answer I would give.

If you don't have permissions to do anything meaningful...changing the user name is just window dressing.  You need to be able to set up a user account in your name, then delete the other account, IMO.

Question: CD RW permission

I'm building a system for my father and am using Win2k along with a Creative Labs CDRW. I would like to set up separate profiles for my family members and want to give them permission to use the burner. Every time I try to burn a disc in a user account, it tells me administrator rights are needed. Is there any way around this?

Answer:CD RW permission

Try this (logged on as administrator)

- open control panel (start> settings)
- double-click Computer Management
- under Storage hit the + next to Removable Storage to expand the list
- expand Physical Locations
- Right-click your CDRW and choose "properties"
- select security tab
- add/modify permissions as appropriate

There are other ways to do this - but this should work. Let us know how it goes.
