Windows Security Essentials

Question: Windows Security Essentials

This is a Toshiba laptop with XP and SP 3 The computer did have Windows Defender installed. But since I thought it was an old program I un-installed it and then installed Microsoft Security essentials. But every time I turned off the computer and then on again.Security Essentials was turned off and there was no way to turn it on again, except by reinstalling it again. That's why I thought a virus or something might have caused this.

Also the DVD drive runs every 3 minutes just for a few seconds, maybe 3 or ,4 as long as the computer is on. I did run Malware Bytes and everything comes up clean. I'm not sure if the two things are related. But for now I installed AVG, which does not get turned off. But the DVD drive still does the same. Can someone figure this out?

Preferred Solution: Windows Security Essentials

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows Security Essentials

Hello,I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you. Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs, unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.----------------------------------------------Please do the following:Step 1Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe on your desktop to run the tool for known TDSS variants.

To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click on change parametersCheck the boxes next to Verify file digital signatures and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.

I have both Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Security Essentials (incl. Firewall, Auto Updates and VIRUS PROTECTION) running on my old pc. Since they both have a virus protection, do I need both? It seems that this pc is always downloading updates and slows the pc terribly.Wellgo

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Security Essentials

"Windows Security Essentials"Are you sure that is the exact name? Maybe I've missed something but I've never heard of it.It is not good to have two Anti-Virus programs running in real time, for the reason you gave. They tend to "check each other" and cause slow downs.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

And please tell me is cleanpcguide.com valid site?Did the scan with AdwCleaner and deleted all the threats.Did the scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and deleted all the threats.Did the scan with TDSSKiller and deleted all the threats.I've made "Windows Defender Offline" Bootable USB and did the scan. It only found keygen that I've never used. Deleted it.I did a little "house cleaning" (nice, yeah) but the problem is still there! If someone have an idea what's the problem, please help. Answer:Security Center service for Windows 7 cannot start & Security Essentials not working

Hi,

The Security Center service cannot be started due to virus destruction.

Have you tried the repair for Windows? If not, you can go to following SkyDrive to load the registry and import it to check the result.

http://cid-9fb18a384ebfc662.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Documents/wscsvc%5E564%5E6.zip

Before importing it, please back up the following registry key first. Just find the key and right click it, choose export and save to desktop.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc]

After importing the correct registry, please go to services Windows to check if Security Center starts properly.

Is the above enough security or should I be going for an anti-virus program as well?

Answer:Is Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall enough Security?

MSE is fine.
If you need extra security, Malware Bytes works well with MSE.

The red Windows Security shield icon keeps telling me my antivirus isn't turned on or it's out of date.  My green Microsoft Security Essentials castle icon tells me it is working and is up-to-date.  Am I supposed to have Windows antivirus turned off because I have MS Sec. Ess.?  If they're both turned on aren't they competing with each other and overtaxing my CPU?  If I have the Windows Security do I not need the MS Security Essentials?  Are they doing different things?  The Windows product mentions a Firewall but the Security Essentials doesn't.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials AND Windows Security?

you should only have one av in your pc as they might be in conflict or cause problems , i would keep MSE disable the windows one , but i would delete it altogetheryou will still have the firewall working

I read good reports of this new AV free program. However, I would like to know if it will work happily alongside my trusted AVIRA, without making problems? I must say that after a week it seems to be OK.

You cannot use 2 AV's at the same time.Reports have been reasonably good on the as yet beta version.

Windows Security but when I do, I just click "clean computer" and threats are removed or quarantined. However, when I click "clean computer" this time, it wants to run "install.exe" by centerproofnessdanger.pl. I've never encountered an attempt to install an exe app in WSE and am reluctant to allow it. I'm running a full WSE scan now to see if I get the same warning and requirement to install another app. I can't seem to find any answers regarding this. OK, so for anti-virus... I got off the paid train a few years back and started using AVG Free and it seems to do a good job since I've not had any viruses.

But, I've noticed some folk be using Windows Essentials Security and claim it is doing a good job and i8s easy to use and may be a better option than AVG Free.

Any thoughts on the effectiveness of Windows Essentials Security?

Also, what are your thoughts on the program Malwarebytes?
Is it worth messing with? I've heard some good stuff about this prog...

Answer:Windows Essentials Security???

I think most of us on here use MSE. I've used it since it was a beta and it has not let me down....no virus's since it's implementation.

I am running microsoft security essentials (with realtime protection) on windows 7, however when I generate a system health report it indicates the following error message:- The Security Center has not recorded an anti-virus product. The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti-virus application. Either there is no anti-virus product installed or it is not recognized. What could be causing it to ignore the security provided by Microsoft Security Essentials. Because The virus guard is visible on the taskbar and running as well as it is fully updated and shows on the taskbar with the GREEN icon - i.e. system is protected.

Anybody running Microsoft's Security Essentials on Windows 7 x64?

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (retail upgrade) and after doing all my installs I installed Microsoft's Security Essentials. At first I did a "quick scan and it took like 10 minutes, however doing a full scan took at least 8.5 hours! This is going through 10 partitions on 3 hard drives.

By contrast Kaspersky takes about 60 minutes or less to do a full system scan the same system.

Is there a problem with MSE doing full scans and has anyone else noticed this.

On the positive side I visited a website posted by a forum member on one of the game forums I visit and MSE flag a file trying to install itself on my computer. Good job.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows 7

10 partitions and 3 drives. Thats whats taking so long. You might try adding some exclusions. MSSE>Settings>Exclude File Types.

I added quite a few exclusions since there arent any be default. Every other virus scanner has a default set. So you will need to add some to MSSE. Thsi will speed up scanning... Here are some to get you started..

AVI, BMP, CHM, INI, ICO, JPG, HXW, MPG, MP3, PNG, TXT, WMV, XML

You can also exclude know safe folders under the Excluded Files & Locations.

I have 2 recent PCs running windows 7 and Norton 2011. Several weeks ago the action centre on one told me I had no antivirus protection, although Norton was (and still is) actually running fine. After being annoyed and nagged by the action centre for some time, I simply switched off the warning. As a result windows then decided to download Windows Security Essentials on my behalf and kept wanting me to install it in order to fix the problem. I assumed that whatever bug was preventing windows from seeing Norton could be sorted out by an update/fix. However, after googling it, from what I can gather it turns out (according to Norton) to be a known Windows flaw which has been around for some time. Perhaps I'm being cynical but could it be MS aren't much bothered about fixing it in order to get people to switch to their security??
Anyhow, has anyone else had this problem and found a solution other than giving in to MS or just ignoring the warnings/nags. I'd prefer to stick with Norton as I think it still has many advantages over WSE (as backed up by Independent Lab reviews). Don't really want to go through the whole Norton uninstall - reinstall thing if its only going to happen again.

Answer:windows security essentials trying to take over from Norton ??

Having 2 Anti Virus Programs running at the same time is a recipe for disaster.
You're lucky that the whole setup hasn't crashed.

Windows Update is not giving me updates for Security Essentials.

I thought Update was supposed to do that? Am I doing something wrong here, or does 7 final not do that? If that's the case, how do I get it to check for virus scanner updates like it does for Win Defender?

A couple of days ago, after disregarding what appeared to be an Adobe Flash Update for Mozilla, I selected update. Shortly thereafter a "Windows Essentials Security Alert" appeared on my screen. I clicked both "Apply Actions" & "Clean Computer." Once I was taken to a third party site I began reading up on the scam and it appears that I downloaded a ferocious trojan virus.
(I should note that I'm running Windows XP Pro 2002, SP3.)

I tried mitigating the problem myself, scouring the web for details on ridding my system of the virus and eventually landed here, bleepingcomputer.com. I ran through the information posted in the forum and downloaded rkill, malwarebytes, etc. I probably pertinent to say I tried running malwarebytes without renaming it. After reading more thoroughly, I uninstalled malwarebytes, downloaded from another pc, renamed and reinstalled. After malwarebytes collected a barrage of viruses and other malware I closed the notepad without saving the log hoping the problem was solved.

Fearful that my system had been further compromised, I found forums outlining the use of combofix. Although the author of the program & help-forums explicitly discourage novelty-users from running the program, I downloaded and ran the tool once from my download folder and again from my desktop. I did not save either log.

I am not currently having issues, but I read that once these operations set themselves up on a system they can create back... Read more

Hello,

Thought I would, finally, download the virus protection that it seems everyone likes in Windows Essentials.
Running W7, the 64 bit vers.

But, I guess the latest "gimmick" is that all the download sites, that I thought, and imply, are MS sites are some other third party sites that also automatically change your Browser to Chrome, and install AVG !

Can anyone point me to the official MS site please, and what I should select to just have the anti-virus
component installed ?

BTW: how does it compare to AVAST free ? Differences ?

Thanks,

I have been running Win10 for a couple of years now and have depended on Windows Defender as my anti-virus protection along with Malware Bytes. So far no problems. While surfing this morning a came across an articled which implied Defender alone needed the company of Windows Security Essentials to offer adequate protection. That seemed to conflict with what I thought I knew and my practice.

Can straighten me out?

Thank you.

Answer:Security Essentials vs. Windows Defender

That was an old article I think.

Windows Security Essentials (an AV) was renamed Windows Defender in Windows 8. You can't install Security Essentials.

There was another earlier MS product also called Windows Defender (which was not a real time AV and ran alongside Security Essentials) which was deprecated in windows 7 (I think).

They change all these names around in circles to keep us on our toes it seems

Defender is all you need on Windows 10 though - not Security Essentials.

I'm typing this from my iPod since my school laptop went crazy...

AVG gave me slot of warnings about explorer.exe and winlogon.exe As well as an obviously fake window called "Windows Security Essentials Alert". I looked it up on this site and followed all the steps. Rkill got rid of that window but AVG would pop up every few seconds with more warnings. I installed and ran MBAM and it found around 70 infected objects and said I needed to restart. I restarted and when It was booting up, I got a blue booting error that said I might have a virus. After a few tries, it booted up but there are no icons or start menu bar. From what I've read, it's an issue with explorer.exe but I don't know what to try from there. In the meantime, I'm running MBAM again, but so far it hasn't found anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Ryan

I have just installed Windows Sec. Essentials and it seems to be working just fine picking up a couple of trojans. I did uninstall Avast and disabled Defender and Super Antispy as Microsoft suggested and am wondering if I can now enable Defender again, or Super Antispy, as Defender keeps popping up to tell me that it is disabled and turn it on.I have Vista home basic, 32 bit. Many thanks in anticipation.Barry.

I installed 360TSE on Windows 10 64 in Shadow Defender. Everything was fine...install/scan/browsing/realtime/system response, etc...

I am thinking of trying it. Few queries for 360TSE users especially on Windows 10 64.
1. Did you get any FPs especially Microsoft/Windows/System files?
2. Do you find it FPs prone i.e not acceptable/many/system files FPs?
3. Settings - Virus Scan - "Do not upload unknown files" - Is this option for ondemand only or realtime too?
4. Rightclick tray icon - Download manager - Settings - "Do not upload after p2p upgrade" - I am on limited bandwidth... should I check this option?

Answer:360 Total Security Essentials on Windows 10 64

1. Yes, two. But I do not have the .log saved, sorry Since then, next to no FP.
2. No.
3. On demand to my finding, it asks for uploading unknown files when not checked.
4. It shares your bandwith as well as Windows 10 does it (for updates) if not deactivated. Yes, you should deactivate it.

Qihoo 360 TSE has done a great job on both Windows 10 x64 machines I employ, with no noticeable slowdown / FP.

Hi,
I was considering downloading and using the Windows Security Essentials for my antivirus. Does anyone else use this and if they do, do you like it? And is there anything else I should consider downloading and using along side of it? I am looking for the best free versions. Money is very limited for me at this time.
Thanks for you help!

Answer:Advice on Windows Security Essentials

What operating system are you using?Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is a free anti-malware solution for Windows 7 and Vista SP1/SP2 that combines the features of an anti-virus and anti-malware scanner to provide real-time protection against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.Windows 8 and Windows 10 integrates a more robust version of Windows Defender (and uses that name) for its anti-virus and anti-malware protection. Windows 8/10 Defender provides the same level of protection against malware as Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) provides on older operation systems and uses the same daily virus definition updates.IMO Microsoft Security Essentials is just as good as any other free antivirus solution (and probably easier to use for the novice) without bundled toolbars or nagging popups.Although Microsoft Security Essentials provides some anti-malware protection...it does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. This is true for most anti-virus solutions. Anti-virus and anti-malware programs each perform different tasks as it relates to computer security and threat detection. Essentially, they look for and remove different types of malicious threats. In simplistic terms, Anti-virus programs generally scan for infectious malware which includes viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkis and bots.Anti-malware programs generally tend to focus more on adware, spyware, unwanted toolbars, browser hijackers, potenti... Hello people. The question is, can I feel safe with WSE as my antivirus? If not, which one would you recommend to me.

One more thing, I bought a new laptop and every time i turn it on WSE detects a threat, and always is the same threat:

Worm:Win32/Conficker/B!inf

I choose every time to eliminate it as it is the suggested action by WSE, but it is unclear to me why this treat keeps appearing.

Hope anyone can help me. Thank you.

Hey All,

I just uninstalled Avast and switched to MSE, because Avast was often draining my system too much of resources. So far, I see to like it. Will MSE be supported for XP after April 2014? I know that MS updates will not, but as updates for MSE apply to XP, Vista, and Windows 7, I was wondering about this?

With MSN, are all the AV and malware protection updates the same?

Jack

Answer:Question About MS Security Essentials For Windows XP

To be honest I wouldn't be bothered by that. The updates should all be the same across OS versions and if nothing else you should still be able to manually update at the very least. Even so in four years a lot of things could change--MSE could drop support for XP completely, could be pulled off the market, could go quickly obsolete, or any number of other things. Or you might change your computer, change your OS, or decide to change your Antivirus again.

It's worth reconsidering your AV semi-regularly (approx once a year) anyway because the best performer in the high speed arms race against malware will continue to change. Four years is an age away when it comes to computers in general, and much more so in terms of malware. Predicting that far in the future isn't worthwhile.

Working with an HP-Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook computer running Windows 7 Home Premium

I renamed two files in Windows system 32 so I could help the owner regain access to her system as she didn't have a re-installation or repair disks (permission to do so on file). I was able to get her logged in and all seems well except for two issues.

1: I am attaching an error message that comes up immediately once windows loads that has to do with Windows Security Essentials. I can neither uninstall it nor re-install over it. It doesn't allow any access to it at all. I have been researching this error but haven't found a solution as of yet and was hoping that someone here would know how to fix it.

2: The touch pad works until Windows is loaded and then it is inoperable and I have to use a wireless mouse.

I ran Kaspersky Rescue disk and removed around a dozen or so Trojans (according to the report). I also ran Malwarebytes, Spybot and Adwcleaner. All caught "stuff" and removed them so I am fairly confident that the machine is clean. [NOTE] I will say that the touch pad did not work at all until after I ran Kaspersky, after which, it works until Windows loads.

Is it necessary to rename the two files back to their original names? Or is it possibly something else?

First, I have been running running Windows Security Essentials for about a year or so. When I did an update about 3 weeks ago, it refused to restart. I decided to do a repair/re-install. The install said that I needed to remove any anti-virus/anti-malware software I had. So I uninstalled my Malwarebytes, A-squared, and Spybot. I attempted another install. No go. Same error. When I checked my Security settings, I found that CyberDefender was installed. I cannot recall installing this and what's worse, I can't uninstall it! I tried to do a manual removal. No such luck. After a few hours of frustration, I installed Windows Defender (it works fine, it just won't do a daily scheduled scan for some reason), Malwarebyutes, and A-squared. Evrything works fine, but it bugs me that I cannot uninstall CyberDefender. Anything that refuses to uninstall worries me. What else is this thing doing? I tried Tom Coyote Forums (I used it years ago) and was directed to this site. I guess Tom Coyoyte Forums is no longer around.

Hey peeps, just thought i'd give you all a heads up, got a notification from windows update telling me that there are new updates available, these updates are windows live essentials and microsoft security essentials.

These consist of several programs:

Microsoft security essentials is a new program developed by microsoft which takes a new look at windows defender, there's a new, cleaner interface, new icon, and seems pretty fast after the first quick scan... screenshot below:

live essentials is the same live essentials pack you get from the microsoft live site, not much new here, bing bar is included instead of the live search bar, that is all.

MrNeeds

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials - Windows Update

Thanks for the update.

MSE gave me a pop-up advising me there was an upgrade and inviting me to download and install it which I did. To be honest, I really didn't pay enough attention to the program (except when I got it a while back and set it up) so I don't really see much of any difference in the looks. I have noticed it does scan a bit quicker though - so an MS update/upgrade that actually improved things for a change.

I downloaded the whole Essentials 2011 Suite about a week ago or so. I like some of the changes and not some of the others. I preferred the Live Toolbar to the Bing toolbar - you could customize it more and could give more space to the search box (which I can't seem to be able to widen and think it can't be done). I also wish there were a way to turn off the alert just because I have pop-ups enabled - it should allow you to disable alerts for the items you choose to enable so if a real alert occurs you can notice it. While I like WLM better than Windows Mail, I'm still having trouble connecting to one of my newsgroups (but otherwise it works fine) - though I rarely use it except for newsgroups as I use Outlook 2007 instead. I'm on the fence about Messenger. It seems to take up too much of the screen now with details I'm not really interested in (but end up reviewing because they're there). I don't really use the other applications but downloaded them anyway so I'd be able to fire them up to help answer questions about them in the forum.

I've been onto all kinds of sites, reading about people who cannot start windows defender, and cannot start it manually. Relax!

First Windows defender is only back up antivirus software graciously adapted into Vista, really its only for those who are not running any antivirus software at all. Sooo, if your running any other antivirus software you should disable defender anyway. Multiple antivirus packages running together is not a good thing. They litterally fight against each other, so only use one.

Secondly, defender will not run, and you cannot start it manually if you are running microsoft security essentials. Essentials will automatically turn off defender. Don't freak out, this is supposed to happen. If you really want defender to run, you must uninstall essentials. Although, I highly recommend essentials, Norton 360 is also great.

After the latest update from WSE (today, 6, July) WSE will not start up it's window, either from the taskbar pinned icon, or, by asking the file to open.

I have checked with the "troubleshooter" and no problems are listed.

Checking system security, states that everything is fine.

To repeat, nothing seems to open the WSE window, even tho' my system says everything is okay.

All the files are there, seen by checking with explorer.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I found this post - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic444085.html

So I followed the intructions, until I got scared and looked up how to post for my own self. I have been struggling with alureon a-j for a while and I think perhaps I need some real help. I pasted the aswMBR.txt, and results.txt I ran TDSSkiller both as administrator and not as administrator and it came back clean.

I got scared at combofix. If someone would hold my little hand, I would be most appreciative.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

Hi - I have just installed MSE on an old laptop which already has Windows Defender. Should I uninstall Windows Defender? Thanks.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Defender

The 'old' Defender is anti malware only, so can run alongside MSE. On Windows 8, Defender is itself a combination of the two (ie, there is no downloadable MSE for W8).

WSE stops working intermittently, With the " WSE stopped working" error. It than must be restarted from the start menu. Full virus scans have been made with three programs, WSE, Acronis and Malwarebytes
I cannot repeat the problem. Using W7 Home Pro. The system Icon does Not turn red. The error only happens when I click on the system icon or try to run a context menu scan.

Answer:Windows Security Essentials stops working

Hi rerice,

There is no such thing as Windows Security Essentials - the free antivirus software from MS is called Microsoft Security Essentials. This makes me wary that you are a victim of the "Security Essentials 2010" trojan. Please read this article from earlier today:

Quote:
Security Essentials 2010 [is] a fake antivirus program that attempts to pass itself for Microsoft Security Essentials. In the screenshot at the top of this article, users can see what Security Essentials 2010 looks like in order to know what to stay away from.

Please have a look and tell me if that looks like the program you're talking about.

Hi

Can anyone help me with this. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my Windows 7 PC. Until recently this has completed a full scan without any problems. Now it has begun stalling after roughly 45 minutes. I ran a full scan over the past two nights but with the same results. I can do a Quick Scan OK and I can do a Full Scan in Safe Mode, but not in Normal Mode. I have had Malwarebytes Premium installed for ages and it hasn't caused any conflict with MSE. However, recently I installed Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware (both free copies). I uninstalled Ad-Aware and that is when the problem started.

I have unistalled (with great difficulty) MSE and reinstalled it but to no avail. I would welcome any help and suggestions.

Many thanks

George

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Windows 7 stalls

If it was after you uninstalled Ad-Aware that the problem started, have you tried re-installing it? Set both Ad-Aware and Spybot only to run on demand, don't have them running in the background in conflict with MSE. Have you tried uninstalling Spybot?

Have you tried a System Restore position from before the problem started?

Upon several fresh installations of Windows 7 SP1 on a formatted HDD, on a new computer that I have accumulated my windows will not update. I usually get a 8e5e03fa on the windows update window. All other software installs and works flawlessly.

At first I thought it was a rootkit or some sort and after scanning with Malwarebytes, GMER, DDS, Combofix, TDSKILLER, and even after changing hard drives the problem persists.

I have ran sfc /scan and attempted to fix errors to no avail. I ran it 3x as directed. I am not able to look or copy at the log file, it says I do not have permissions even though I am the only administrator and even tried to manually change the permissions, I do not have access to this log.

I have done the new root2 folder, the problem persists.

I have ran 2 microsoft update fixit tools. the problem persists.

I have ran the update stand alone installer and it crashes immediately with 0xc80003fa error.

I get this error when I try to install .net 4.0 so my graphics card drivers would work, HRESULT 0xc80003fa

Other tutorials that I have followed to no avail:

Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2

I am exhausted, can someone help me?

Here is a gallery I uploaded with screenshots of problems.

I have a Vista SP1 desktop, recently acquired the fake Windows Security Essentials. My wife got it, clicked on something, and then just left it alone. It comes up with the standard screen for this trojan, saying there is an infection. If I try to get into task manager, etc, it will do a memory dump and reboot.I booted into safe mode and attempted to run rkill. The malware blocked it. I tried to leave the warning up and run rkill again and got memory dump/reboot.Back into safe mode, can't get online, so download renamed rkill, dds, gmer and put them on disk on another computer.Put the disk in, tried to run renamed rkill, got dump/reboot.Back to SM, tried to run dds, and it wouldn't complete. Just seemed to go away.Tried to run gmer, and it started running, then came up with "Gmer has encountered an error" and stopped. Tried to run it again and got dump/reboot.Tried to run MBAM after reboot and got dumped again after a couple of minutes. At this point I'm stuck. Is there a tool that will stop this piece of crap from running so I can clean it off?I've tried to get log files to post, but the computer reboots anytime I try to run tools. Thanks for your help!!

I just found out from looking on Amazon for Network Security books that MS has some new entry level exams. One of them that caught my eye was Microsoft Windows Security Essentials Exam 98-367. It covers basic security stuff, i skimmed through the book and it is pretty in-depth with some great material, I think I am going to pick this up.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate but my children have Windows 8. I have told them that their protection was okay as Majorgeeks rated it very highly. What is the real story here? My kids and I are not super geeks. I think we all surf the web safely. Don't know about the grandkids clicking on stuff though. Your opinions and expertise will be highly appreciated. Microsoft is adding Microsoft Security Essentials to Windows Update as a Optional update. No word yet on when or if the update will ever be a required update. Some companies has complained saying if this is a required update Microsoft would be cornering the market on Anti-Virus. Companies are also saying this could reek havoc on the personal computer since the user might already have an anti-virus installed. Most users have Windows Update set to Automatic so again this could be a very bad thing for the unbeknown user. We will have to wait and see how this plays out in the near future.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Now A Windows Update

They may wanna be careful doing this, as of now, a lot of software disables the windows defender service for some kinda incompatibility reason. I would hate to see what Microsoft installed software would do to the AV software, I know some AV software enjoys locking a system down if it ends up being disabled.

I have uninstalled and installed MSE but when I try to open it just flashes quickly on screen then goes away...?! What could be wrong. I tried to uninstall Defender but it won't let me. and yet I cannot open Defender from anywhere. I do not understand what is happening. I have been using this new system for a year now, and this is first time with this issue.

It started when I noticed a small flag icon in lower right of taskbar next to the speaker icon, it had a red/white X through it. When I tried to start the Security Centre, it said cannot be started.

I have all updates, running i5 Intel, 4gb ram, ATi 5770 VGA, 500gb HDD, 21" Samsung, Antec 900 case, 650W PS, Win 7 Home Prem.

Please help this old codger if you can, its MOST frustrating......I have enough grey hair, don't need anymore...

Answer:Cannot open Security Essentials or Windows Defender

First let's check for infection by installing, updating then running a full scan with Malwarebytes, if necessary in Safe Mode with networking.

If that balks you likely have a smart infection blocking it's known killers. Download, burn to CD or write to flash stick, boot and run a full scan with Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper
Once the system is disinfected if needed then boot into Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD to run Startup Repair repeatedly. It should automate System Restore and SFC but if not run them from the Recovery Tools list options Command Line: SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot
System Repair Disc - Create

Next try to uninstall and reinstall MSE, which should disable Defender once it takes effect. If not, disable Defender yourself in services.msc.

If you have chronic problem with MSE then install instead Avast 6 which is comparable.

These SSs are from my wife's PC. Last night, she clicking on an image of Lake Tahoe, of a hotel we are looking to stay at..and she got a virus. BAM. Right? Now, her PC used to be mine. It had Malwarebytes, Superantispyware on there from when I used it. I noticed they weren't on there any longer. Curious. I had also installed for her, MSFT Security Essentials. Didn't see that, either. VERY curious. She insists she uninstalled nothing, and I believe her.

So. I installed MWB..SASW..and also SE. Ran all three. MWB found 4 bad things and quarantined. SASW was clean. You see here in SS #1 the result of the SE scan. It still located those- which I then REMOVED.

I restarted as prompted, and it still shows what you see in SS #2. It has discovered the initial bad file, and wants another re-start, it's third. (Also asked for a re-start upon installing and initial run last nite.)

Looking at the SS#2, I went to the path and found that .exe....and there it was like an apple for the picking, and I deleted it.

Your thoughts?

Answer:Advice on this Windows Security Essentials screenshots pls

There are a number of viruses that remove or disable installed security software. It sounds like you had one hell of trojan. If you look at screenshot #1 you will see that all of them are the same files found at different times. To help prevent the situation from repeating itself, I would make sure UAC is on. I would also consider using the paid version of MBAM. It is one time fee of $25 for life. It is also pretty common for them to have some kind of promotional code. I was able to find a valid one through google for 10% off when I bought it. It can (and should) be run along side MSE on 7 and Vista without conflict. If I recall they have some trouble running along side each other on XP.

Hi,

I would love for someone to help with an issue I have been having with MS essentials, upon booting up of my laptop I get an error message from MS essentials ( 0x80073b01)

I've had a look around and downloaded various different things to help, hitman pro managed to find three things that I know should not be there but it cant repair it.
these are the notes that hitman pro found:

   Redirection: Backup -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: Drivers -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: en-us -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

I have no idea how to fix this, I currently cannot search for new updates due to this problem, and it deactivated my firewall also but I have thankfully managed to get that running again ( I think ).

I found a link that is alot like the problem I seem to be having, If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it:

Hi,

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
 rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once the scan has finished running, a file named Rkill.txt should be located on the desktop. Please copy and copy the contents into your next reply.

Hi Guys,

My Brothers laptop running Windows 7 has Windows Bitdefender & Microsoft Security Essentials installed.

Windows Bitfender is turned off and unable to be turned.

My question is should you only have Windows Bitdefender installed on your laptop or just Microsoft Security Essentials installed but not the two programmes which is why Windows Bitfender can't be turned on?

There is one other issue with his laptop where some times when at the desktop his screen goes black for a few seconds  then all the desktop icons enlarge as well as the taskbar bulking out the desktop area.

If he shuts down the laptop the desktop is normal for 5 minutes and sometimes 1 hour then back to the black screen for a few seconds and enlarged icons.

Any suggestions please.

MSE is anti virus, Defender is anti malware. Rather than Defender, I personally would go for the free Superantispyware, but there are lots of other free ones.
I used to use MSE for antivirus, but have now switched to the free version of AVG.

Hi there, I am trying to roll back from 2012 to the 2009 Windows Live Mail and cannot get the last component to uninstall, which apparently is required before installing the older version.

I tried uninstalling from the control panel with no success. I was able to uninstall all the other components, but when I try to uninstall family security, I get the error message 0x80070643 and says that some other program is blocking it.

I turned off windows firewall and disabled family security and made sure its process isn't running, but it still gives the error and will not allow me to install the older version.

In the mean time, I have no access to email via my PC. Thanks for your help!

MSE just had its real time protection turned on, as I apparently did not verify my Windows genuine status, even though I'm positive I did. I didn't see any button to run a check, so I tried to turn on real-time Security Essentials couldn't turn on real time-protection This operation returned because the timeout period expired. Click help for more information about this problem. Error code: 0x800705b4 So I didn't feel like dealing with this, and just decided to do an uninstall/re-install. When I tried THAT (via add/remove programs in control panel), I got this message: The Security Essentials Installation Wizard is missing a filter manager rollup package needed to complete the installation. To continue installing Security Essentials, you must first download the required package. (I click it, and nothing happens) I googled this problem, and found a possible solution on the Microsoft support forums, which was to do a Windows Update. So I try THAT, and even that won't even load, as I get THIS message: The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context. Talk about annoying. Help is appreciated, because I really don't know what to do now!

If you made it to this thread and you are still using XP and MSE has failed on you(Microsoft ended support for XP on 4/8/14 along with MSE), I have created this thread to help with still-XP users who dont have strong enough computers to upgrade, whether it not be efficient for your machine or whether you just dont feel like going through the work of upgrading it,
The problem is that many of us who use our older but still maintained pc's have XP, but upgrading will cause a lot of work and a change in performance. I still use my 8+ year-old Sony Vaio Laptop as a media device, although now the problem is coming from the lack of Microsoft support, which leads to the bigger problem: lack of support from Micorsoft Security Essentials.
Which leads us also to Ccleaner. If you are a user of Ccleaner(and still have XP) it is a great program but i would highly advice against trying to update at this point as doing so for me caused more virus problems. It may be because I followed a faulty link but I have updated and used Ccleaner(Cookie Cleaner) for years with XP before Microsoft ended suppport and have had no problems.
I would post the specs of my old Sony Vaio at this point but I am currently in boot-scan mode... which lead us to...
I had to uninstall MSE to install Avast! to do a boot scan. WHY?
I am also an avid user of Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, and I also try to utilize Kaspersky Lab's Rootkit Killer(which did nothing again).
Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware is my go-to anti-virus in W... Read more

Answer:Windows XP Viewpassword Micorsoft Security Essentials Ccleaner.

*FIXED*
Following my own steps above I was able to finally(after the 3rd or 4th try) complete a full boot-time scan with Avast!... I am now running a Malwarebytes Custom scan to make sure:
1: After the final Avast! boot-time scan is successfully complete and the computer has reloaded to desktop, open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
2. Choose Custom Scan
3.Make sure that ALL devices in the right column are selected(to be sure).
4.Makes sure that 'Root-kit check' in the left column is UNCHECKED(as we are already aware that the root-kit function in Malwarebytes is broken, and since Avast! has been used we don't need it anyway).
5. Run the scan. If successful, you should come up clean.

I hope this has been of help.

We recently got a New Edge E520 for one of our professors, had have run into an interesting issue. When You install Microsoft Security Essentials, On restart, the Microsoft Antimalware Service changes from Automatic to manual and the service is stopped. Before you start saying "Infected" Keep in mind that this system is straight out of the box and had not been on the internet for anything other than installing MSE. I also restored It back to factory defaults and tried again with the same results. Process used to recreate this: 1) Restored system to factory image. (first attempt was Out of the box)2) Stepped through the Windows 7 Standard OOBE.3) After the Windows 7 OOBE, a Lenovo window shows up asking to activate Norton Internet Security 20124) Did not activate Norton since Norton is going away. Norton Installed Anyway.5) Did not Install Office.5) At this point, the desktop comes up. So I Uninstall Norton Internet Security 2012 and restarted. (on the first attempt, I Used the latest Norton Removal Tool)6) On reboot, connected to internet, installed Microsoft Security Essentials, updated to latest defs and rebooted.7) On reboot, started up Services.msc and looked at Microsoft Antimalware Service. It is started and Set to automatic.8) Wait 30 seconds later. Service is set to manual. Service is stopped. MSE has a Red Icon.9) Subsequent restarts will not start MSE Automatically. It must be started manually. Changing the service back to automatic will be rever... Read more

Solved it. Did a ton of testing on the laptop and tracked the problem to Lenovo RapidBoot. Looked for an update, and sure enough there's an update that fixes a but in Lenovo RapidBoot that sets the Microsoft Antimalware service to manual. I am having some problems now that I have removed (or atleast think I have?) the malware. I booted in safe mode and ran RKIll, and then scanned with Malwarebytes MBAM and removed the infected files. I have attached my MBAM log. Here are the issues I am having after removing the Windows Security Essentials virus.I can't connect to the internet through either Wifi or a wired connection.I can't view network connections. I get the error: The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of network adapters on your machine. Please make sure the Network Connection service is enabled and running. When I try to enable to Network Connection service I get the error: Could not start the Network Connections service on Local computer Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.I can't listen to audio files. I believe the virus changed this as well. I believe it is because I do not have the required services running. I try to go to services.msc to change the services but not all of them will start. I tried to turn on the services I need to get online but that didn't work either. The other main problem I am having is that I see NO devices in the Device Manager. Hi,

I can no longer find where to access the Security Essentials that is built in on Windows 7. I've tried searching on Google but it keeps claiming it needs to be installed when I know it's built-in as I used it a little over a month ago.

Also is their any difference between the built in client and Microsoft Security Essentials. Thanks

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials (Built-In Windows 7 protection)

The built in version is "windows defender" (just search for defender and you will find it) and although it uses the same virus definitions as Security Essentials I don't think it offers the same level of protection or options as MSE itself. Installing MSE automatically disables windows defender.
I would go ahead and install MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Thousands of downloads. Countless positive reviews on software blogs around the Internet. It's been quite a ride so far for Microsoft Security Essentials.
In AV Comparative's most recent report on malware removal, MSE was the only free antivirus rated Advanced+. That ranking placed it alongside big names like Norton, Kaspersky, and F-Secure. Security Essentials also beat out technician favorite ESET, which managed only an Advanced rating. Microsoft Security Essentials rated best free antivirus for Windows

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials is the BEST free antivirus for Windows

Another positive result. Thanks for posting

Recently, I installed Avasti and uninstalled Windows Security Essentials because didn't need two antivirus programs. Then, Windows Defender "kicked in" and every couple of days it is updated with a ~35MB file. Why is the file so large when compared to the WSE updates?

Today, this file KB915597 (Definition 1.213.1225.0 the same version and also about ~34MB), was downloaded and installed twice. Once at 2:16pm and once at 7:39pm. Can someone please clue me in about what is going on???

Answer:Difference between Wndows Security Essentials and Windows Defender

Hi:

There is no such thing as "Windows Security Essentials".

For Windows 7 ONLY:

"Microsoft Security Essentials" is a free, Microsoft anti-virus -- it must be installed on its own. It is probably as good as any other free, anti-virus, although it has both fans and detractors.

"Windows Defender" is a weak anti-spyware application that comes pre-installed with Windows 7. Most folks probably agree that there are better, 3rd-party anti-malware/anti-spyware applications. It is not sufficient on its own -- you still need a robust, real-time anti-virus (either MSE or another, 3rd-party anti-virus).

I hope this helps a bit,

MM

Yesterday I received a pop-up warning from Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE from here on) that two files were suspicious but unidentified as malware so permission to send to Microsoft's servers for analysis was requested. I clicked yes and continued working. A few minutes later, another pop-up appeared saying MSE real-time protection had been disabled. I tried to re-enable it without luck and restarted the computer. Upon restart, MSE would not load. It appeared for a moment but quickly shut down again. I ran Ad-Aware (which found nothing) and Malwarebyte's Anti Malware which found the two files noticed by MSE earlier, and deleted them. MSE still would not start, so I uninstalled and reinstalled but it still will not start. Additionally, all Google searches redirect to various websites urging me to install their "safety" toolbars. I hope you can help me!

I am stuck trying to repair a laptop for my sister. It has Windows 7, 64Bit running, but it is having problems. It will not run Windows Update, Microsoft Secutiry Essentials(MSE), or System Restore. I tried going through the repairs suggested on Microsofts website. I also tried removing MSE to no avail. I was able to install Malwarebytes, update the definitions, and scan the laptop with no malacious items found. I also did an online virus scan from trend micro and it found no viruses. Please adivse.

Thanks in advance!!

Answer:Windows update, MS Security Essentials, and System restore will not run

Head over to the malware section. (You can't assume because malwarebytes found nothing it is clean; I speak from personal experience helping someone clean a computer).
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Start here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
when you downloaded MGTools and have the logs, post a thread in the malware section with the logs attached.

If you can't run all the tools, run what you can and post the logs that you have.

Hi,

The symptoms I have are very similar to the ones that were in this thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/496263/access-is-denied-and-disabled-windows-defender-microsoft-security-essentials/

Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials/Forefront Protection have not functioned, presumably do to a trojan (which was removed a month or so ago, and I'm just now addressing the effects it had on these programs). The shortcuts to everything in those folders appears as "C:\Windows\system32\config," and I can't uninstall or do anything to the stuff.

Per the advice in the thread above, I ran the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool. Listed below is my pasted log from FRST.txt, and attached is my Addition.txt file. From there, I am hoping someone can help me move on to the next step. Thanks!

So I noticed my computer was having some redirect issues using Firefox and searching through google. I am running windows xp service pack 3.

I then attempted to use Microsoft Security Essentials which disappeared when i tried to mouse over the tray icon. I tried to restart MS security essentials, once it opens up it is in red status:PC at risk. If i click on start now it gives me the error "Couldn't start the security essentials service. error code 0x80070424"

I then used malwarebytes and it found trojan.happili, supposedly quarantined but I found it later on while in safemode using malwarebytes again.

I also ran HitmanPro which found a sirefec.fc, hitmanpro claims to have removed it.

I have used the microsoft support to restart the windows update, from this link (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058) the windows fixit to reset it will not run, so there is no windows update listed still in services.msc

If i try to go update.microsoft.com I am redirected to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2497281 and cannot update.

In addition if i try to click on windows firewall from the control panel it says "Due to an unidentified problem, windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings." and does not run.

My attempts at fixing this are not working and any help would be appreciated.

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

I have tried to resolve using Malwarebytes - nothing was detected.
I have tried to manually update the MS Sec Essentials database - it will not run the update.
Windows Updates won't run as it says the services aren't running - BITS & Windows update services both say they are running under Services.

I also tried the TDSS rootkiller repair - (have attached the log)
This is a DHCP system - there are no manual DNS entries (I have checked).
There are no extranesous entries in the hosts file.

I know I'm infected somewhere & I could really use an expert's help.
