After virus removal, internet only works in Safe Mode

Question: After virus removal, internet only works in Safe Mode

Hi,

My sister's computer - XP SP3, Optiplex 755 - was recently infected with System Protection rogue av. After following instructions found at Beeping Computer, I removed Rootkit.Boot.Pihar.a with TDSSKiller and the rest of the rogue with Malwarebytes. I uninstalled the previous expired AV, McAfee Total Protection, from Add/Remove and installed Avast free. Everything seems fine and back to normal, but...

Since the removal procedure, the internet has not worked in Normal boot mode. It will ping, RDP and open files on networked computers but no browser will pull up a web page. In safe mode, however, web pages work fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled IE, FF and Chrome but they all still will not connect. I ran McAfee removal tool and it found a few things but didn't resolve the issue (Security Check found no sign of McAfee afterwards, Windows firewall is off). Ran Dial A Fix, Winsockfix, uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP. Tried SFC /scannow as well as a repair install but issue persists. Route print and netstat shows nothing strange. I've created lists of services and tasks running in both normal and safe mode but there are literally three times as many services running normally so it's really not feasible to start turning them off and rebooting.

I'm trying desperately to not have to reformat. Of course, I may HAVE to but to wipe and reload for one thing is a disappointment.

Thanks for any help! I'd really appreciate any insight!

Preferred Solution: After virus removal, internet only works in Safe Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had a nasty virus for months; I got rid of most of it but still had remnants like Google redirecting and hidden start menu options. Yesterday I ran Eset, TDSSkiller, HitmanPro, MBAM, Unhide.exe, and finally CCleaner and everything was restored and my computer worked perfectly, faster than it had been in months, etc. It was grand. Then this morning it started working really slowly on YouTube. I realized I had never restarted the computer after running the series of programs which finally got it working again (or so it seemed). I ran them again and restarted it. Ever since, the internet has not worked in normal boot mode and it's driving me crazy!! It works fine in Safe Mode w/networking; what have I done??? Please help!!

Answer:Removed virus, now internet only works in safe mode

Try this program, and see if it helps --> http://majorgeeks.com/Complete_Internet_Repair_d7183.html

Do you know what was the name of that nasty virus?

Hi ,
I've just removed some viruses from my computer using BitDefender and it seems that my internet is pretty screwed . I've gone into normal boot to find that all of my network connections are missing in both of the folders "My network places" and "Network connections ." No icons whatsoever , just a blank folder . However , in safe mode I am able to access the internet and my connections appear regularly within their respective folders . I've tried re-installing my ethernet drivers in safe mode and normal boot . No luck . So , I thought that I'd be just fine running in safe mode , but unfortunately I want to be able to play my online game since Safe Mode is limited in colors , therefore I cannot play my game ><;

So , I was just wondering how I can restore my internet connection within normal boot ?

Thanks , Andrew

EDIT : My computer internet was working JUST FINE before the removal of the viruses .

Answer:No internet after virus removal, only in safe mode .

You could try running System Restore and going back to a time before the infection or you could try booting with your XP CD and performing a Repair.

Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a pentium 4 processor, yes I know, old, but it works. It is running on Windows XP Pro, version 2002 with service pack 3. I have cable internet connected to a Linksys WRT100 router. As of late, my computer has been acting a little funny. I cannot seem to browse the internet for more than 5 minutes (with either Firefox 3 or IE 8) in normal mode, but the computer shows that I am connected to the internet. I was connected via a usb wireless adaptor, but since it has been acting strange, I have removed the wireless adaptor with the software and am now connected through an ethernet cord to the router which is connected to the cable modem.

The internet works fine in safe mode with networking though. Plus, in normal mode, I am able to update services such as McAfee virus scan and Spybot, as well as remote connect to another computer, which require internet although the internet browsers say that it is not connected. I have ran Spybot, Ad-Aware, and McAfee virus scan already as well, all have not found anything. My roommate's laptop is able to connect to the network, via ethernet and wireless adapter, thus I do not believe it is either the router or modem. In device manager, my network adaptor icons did not show either an "x" or "!" icon. I have tried "WinsockxpFix" but that does not seem to solve my problem. I have tried going into "msconfig" to disable all of the "startup" pro... Read more

PLEASE HELP THANKS

Answer:Internet works in vista only in safe mode and not normal mode

My first suggestion would be to get into msconfig and uncheck as much as you can in the startup tab. See if you can then use IE or whichever browser you use. If it works, then slowly add items back until you find the culprit.

Answer:No internet in normal mode but works in safe mode with networking

The first thing i would do is stay in safe mode and run a virus scan.

Also check for a system restore point.

Use your Install DVD. When on the install now screen choose repair in the left side of screen. Select your OS. Then When at the GUI select system restore. Choose a date before all this happened.

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and really hoping you can help me :)

My internet has not been working on my laptop, which happened very suddenly 2-3 days ago. The connection is fine on my other computer and phone, so I know its not the internet itself. Even on the laptop, it SAYS the wifi is connected, but its not working. Firefox was instantly crashing, it wouldn't even bring up the browser window. Chrome gives me a "DNS address not found" error for every site I try and IE wont load anything.

I've tried flushing my DNS, using that ipconfig /refresh and /renew thing. I've tried troubleshooting the wifi connection, disabling/enabling it. I ran a Malware Bytes scan and only found a couple of "pup" programs/cookies that have been deleted. Currently running a SuperAntiSpyware scan.

The thing is, I tried using the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and it works just fine! So that means a program or something on my computer is causing it, right? There were issues with my Teredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interface driver the other day, it had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, but I did a couple of fixes that I found on help sites and that exclamation is gone now.

Please help, I really want to use my laptop on the internet again ;_;

Oh, and the specs for my comp are:
Lenovo Win7 PC
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz
RAM: 6 GB
Windows 7 - 64 bit operating system

Answer:Internet works in safe mode w/ networking but not normal mode

In Network and Sharing Center, there is a wizard to troubleshoot connection problems. If that doesn't work, you could "set up a new connection".

I'd guess you have some kind of malware on your computer, have you run a virus scan? I'd followup with something like malwarebytes.

Ok, I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but I have looked everywhere.I have a T60 running Windows XP Pro w/ SP3.  About 72 hours ago, I lost the ability to access the internet via my browser (IE7) while running in normal mode.  Works fine in safe mode with networking.  I am connected to a home network using wireless.  Router and modem all check out fine, and have been rebooted.  A 2nd laptop was brought in to verify and worked fine.  T60 will not allow internet access with wired port or wireless port in normal mode.  My desktop computer works fine on same network. The only update I've made recently is the update to the WiFi driver from Lenovo a few days ago.  I've even rolled back to the previous driver and still cannot stay connected to the internet for more than maybe 1 minute in normal mode after bootup and loggging in.I've run every Malware/anti-virus program known to man and have found nothing (Malwarebytes, Spybot, A-Squared, etc.)I've run several Rootkit tools and found nothing.I've disabled, removed and reinstalled my Norton Internet Security software and made no difference.  (same version running on my desktop and working fine.  Same version that has been running on this laptop for months and working fine.)I've done Registry restores (from a backup) and repairs and no change.I've removed and reinstalled IE7.I've run Hijackthis and had the info analyzed, found nothing.I've tried winsock repair tools, "netsh" reset co... My internet wont work unless I'm in 'Safe Mode With Network Support'. This just started 2 days. All other computers on my network are fine, except this one. Can anyone suggest anything?

I'm running Windows XP.

I've done countless virus scans and adware scans.

I got frustrated last time with hijack this, so I just checked off everything and clicked "Fix". That didnt work.

I managed to fix some things in the Event Viewer. Now I get Event 7031 and that is the only error I receive. Details -
"The Workstation Service Library service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 397 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 3000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."
One time I thought I had it fixed, but like 10 min later it went back into safe mode.

Ran something called Win Sock XP fix which basically restored tcp/ip settings but that didnt work. That was a temporary fix. NOw I'm stuck without a clue.

Ran symantec a few times. Found a few viruses, but they got deleted quickly. Here's a list of viruses they found and fixed.

userint32.exe virus name W32.Allim
rdriv.sys virus name Trojan Horse
msaccrt.exe virus name W32.Allim
lanmany.exe virus name Backdoor.Staprew.B
aight.exe virus name Backdoor.Trojan

Does anyone have any reccommendations? Re-formatting isnt really an option.

Hello,

I'm running a Gateway NV Series and as of last night I have fallen victim to the problem that Windows 7 seems to be plagued with. My internet has completely stopped working, both Ethernet and Wireless. I have tried many of the fixes suggested in this forum and others, but none of them have worked. So I booted into safe mode with networking and low and behold, the wireless and Ethernet work just fine here.

Why is this?

I don't like to run the internet on safe mode, and I would to have my computer back working at normal capacity. How can I fix this?

Specs on my laptop are here:

Answer:No Internet in Normal Mode; Works in Safe Mode

Hi and Welcome to SF.

Your safe mode loads up with the bare essentials to get things working. Using builtin drivers i would think and no third party softwares. If your safe mode don't work, more than likely u have a system/hardware issue.

As for your normal mode, go into Device Manager, any noticable issues?

Chances are, you have Malware.  Programs that are using internet access that you can't see.  Run Malwarebytes, Hitman and AdWare cleaner.

Im running windows Vista 32bit version with SP2 installed.

Problem occured after i accidently clicked on a link in skype. Since after a reboot internet access, Network shows local only.

I tried safe mode and internet works fine. So updated Nod32 AV, Malwarebytes AntiSpyware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. (Updated these in safe mode)
Rebooted the PC, did full system scans on them all. Nod32 - clean, malwarebytes - few threats, spybot - few threats also, and all removed, rebooted PC again, no change. So i disabled all starup items and non microsoft services from msconfig. Rebooted and still no internet. I have no system restore points, as i've found the spyware must of disabled it.

The IP address i get is 169.254.157.195(preferred) no gateway, DNS fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1. Thou in safe mode it gets the normal ip address, 192.168 etc.

Something must be blocking it if its working fine in safe mode, i just cant find it, anyhelp be appreciated.

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode

Solved: It was Nod32, somehow even with it turned off or disabled on startup, it still was blocking the network. I made a new profile and it let access thru the network.

I need some help...I will do my best to describe what I am experiencing, any help is appreciated

I have Vista on my laptop, it all started by not being able to open internet, I could only open it in safe mode. While I was in safe mode with networking searching for a solution, I lost the ability to be online at all, safe mode or not. Then the dreaded blue screen popped up, just for a second, so I quickly rebooted in safe mode without networking. My mother's computer is working terribly. I happen to be the tech savvy one that is within reach on her, but I use a mac. I also only see her on the weekends, so it will take me a while to be able to respond with any updates, but I will definitely respond.

So, from what I know of the problem. She uses an internet provider called Hughesnet, she has vista, and uses Internet Explorer. She cannot get on the internet without her computer being in safe mode, but even then it won't sometimes work. Other than this, I don't know a whole lot at this time and I won't be able to get anything else until this weekend.

If there is anything that you need to know in order to help me, then could you post what is needed and how to obtain that information? I am not very good with computers, but I am better than everyone else back at home. Thank you and sorry that this is so vague.

I looked thru some similar threads but they all seemed malware related. This PC is running WinXP MCE and it will connect and successfully ping from the command prompt, but will not open web pages. I've tried alternative browsers like FireFox and Opera. I've tried the WinSock/TCPIP fix. I've tried an LSP fix, and Dial-A-Fix. When you try to open a web site, it comes up really fast that the page cannot be displayed; like it doesn't even need to 'think' about it for a second. But in safe mode, IE works no problem. I've noticed that even though there's no Norton/Symantec products in the All Programs list, there is a Norton icon in the control panel, and several Norton and Symantec programs in Add/Remove Programs, and there's like 4 or 5 Norton services running. Stopping the services didn't help. The Symantec and Norton programs will not uninstall from Add/Remove. They will not uninstall with the Norton Removal Tool, it just sits on a file/folder called SAVRT. It doesn't lock up or stop responding, it just sits there with the little magnifying glass doing its thing, and the hard drive LED isn't lit up... I've tried two different 3rd party uninstallers also. Still Norton is there, and I think it has alot to do with the internet connection trouble. So, before this post gets too long (it may be too late for that), does anyone have any ideas? I've tried installing IE7, no luck. I've uninstalled it back to IE6, ... Read more

Answer:Internet works in Safe Mode ONLY!

Dropped Norton after reusing '03 for a year because 'the 04 version I purchased had a problem similar to what you are having, and this was after having the Microsoft Certified guy check it out. There is a good uninstaller for Norton products available on line, check out the Symantec website. I like using Comodo and AVG for freeware, or Trend Micro for shareware.

Hello,

I came across this problem yesterday and have constantly been trying to fix it. I get the little '!' error on my internet when I try to access it, but not when I'm in Safe Mode with Networking. I've tried every fix I can find and am hoping that you guys might be able to help me. What I *think* happened is that I must of installed a malicious program, I was downloading something from Cnet (I know) and though I'm usually pretty careful to decline all the offers, I think I might of installed one but I can't find it anywhere. I'm running Malware Bytes right now and hoping it will find something. Is there anything in this HijackThis log that seems like it might be causing the problem?

I can't guarantee anything, but let's have a look:

Please go to the link below and downloadHiJackThis by Merijn Bellekom:

Save it to a permanent folder.

***NOTE***Do not FIX anything without a log analyzer's guidance. MOST of what's listed is necessary for your computer to operate normally.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Alternate download links:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

HiJackThis download link
Under "Official Downloads" HiJackThis. It's the 2nd one down.

Download and unzip to a permanent folder of your own creation.

Open HiJackThis. Click "Scan". Then, in the lower left corner, click "Save Log".

Save it to your permanent HiJackThis folder (or floppy disk if necessary).

The log will open in Notepad. Click "Edit" then "Select All".

Copy and paste the log back to this thread.

After that's done, open HiJackThis. Click "Config" and put a checkmark in the "Make backups before fixing items" box.

Hey guys. I'm having a problem. My apartment complex provides my internet service as part of my rent. I believe it's a LAN connection. Earlier today my internet apparently went out. Although, under Control Panel --> Network Connections, it said I had a valid connection and I could release/renew my IP address, I could not connect to a website. Anytime I tried, it immediately said "server not found." I decided to try connecting to the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and low-and-behold it works without incident. Before my internet went out, the last thing I was doing was updating my Kaspersky AV with the newest product version and performing a system scan. Since correlation does not imply causation, I'm not really sure if Kaspersky is the cause or not. But I don't see how it could be. Any ideas? Thanks!

Note: I've since went back to Normal Mode and used Task Manager to quit every process that either wasn't essential or would actually quit and not return. I was left with 20 processes:

explorer.exe
aoltpspd.exe
aoltsmon.exe
csrss.exe
dlbkbmgr.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
spoolsv.exe
6 instances of svchost.exe
System
System Idle Process
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe
wscntfy.exe

Even with only those processes running, my internet still does not work in Normal Mode.

Hey everyone,

My internet is only working in safe mode recently and don't know why.

I have windows 7 and a compaq. I have read some info from others on this issue but don't know what to take from this information.

I am not computer savvy at all and just want to know if anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks,

John

Answer:internet only works in safe mode

Have you recently added or removed any software? Have you tried a different web browser?

I would suggest restoring the system back to a point in time prior to when you had the issue.

What is System Restore?

I am taking a wild guess here but there is some Programs being loaded that are troubling your Connections to the Internet. Try Downloading Adaware, Spybot. Hijack this would be a great tool for you and Us to find out what is running on your PC. As well go to start-->run-->msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and find out if there is something in there that is starting up that is not supposed to be there

Answer:Internet Only Works In Safe Mode

What browser are you using? It might be worth trying an alternative browser, such as Firefox, just to prove whether or not it is a browser issue. As for malware, it depends what you tried. if you didn't at least try this freebie on it then do so:AdwCleaner:https://toolslib.net/downloads/view...(blue "Download Now" button on right).Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Clean" button.. If it finds anything please copy/paste the log on here. If you lose the ADW log you can find it as a text file in the ADWCleaner folder directly off the system drive root (usually C).Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Greetings,

I come seeking help for my mom's laptop. During a Mother's Day visit, she asked me to take a look at her Toshiba laptop. Said she was not able to get to any of her websites. Banking, Genealogy, healthcare.

She used Google Chrome. I also confirmed the issue is present in IE 11 as well. She is running Windows 7. I brought the laptop home and the problem exists on my network as well.

The laptop boots up, and the internet connects and works for a hot minute, then it stops connecting to websites.

From the root directory, I pinged google.com and got a response. Windows updates are unable to occur as well.

When I booted into safe mode with networking, all websites worked without interruption.

I ran Malware Bytes and Hitman Pro before coming here and following the Do this First Procedure. Attached are my logs.

I ran AdwCleaner twice, hence two logs attached.

Thanks to anyone willing to help out.

Issue: internet is limited, only works in safe mode
Questions:
Where can I find the issue?
What is causing my internet not to work?
Why does it only work in safe mode?
Steam doesn't connect and also no web page loads. Even though my internet is on everything tells me there is a network error. Sometimes the networks goes limited. I decided to start windows in safe mode and the internet works, it's lightening fast and loads everything, my arma 3 ping was at 1400 before the problem. It doesn't load not but on safe mode it's a t 70 which is amazing. All I want is my internet back.
Can someone give me lots of things I can try in safe mode to find the problem and eliminate it so I can play some online games and surf the Internet.

im on a Dell laptop with windows XP with sp2

My internet was going fine and then all of the sudden it stopped working. If i restart it works for one or two IE pages but is really slow. AIM works but is also really slow. But I can use both fine on Safe mode with networking. Any thoughts? I'm assuming its some sort of process messing it up.

Ever since I came back to school on the 17th, my internet has not been working. In normal mode, I'd get a connection for maybe a minute or two and then it would just cut off and say no connection detected. Then it would come back after a few minutes and then just cut off again. But then I went into safe mode with networking and my connection is fine. I've read countless forums to try and solve this problem but I can't seem to do it, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

P.S. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NS135E and I'm using an ethernet cable.

I have a sony vaio and AT&T wireless. at first the wireles internet didnt work so I pluged it in and the internet worked. Then that started not working so i would unplug the cable or restart the computer and then the internet would work for a while. Now the internet will only work in safe mode unless I run an rkill then the internet will work in normal mode for like 30 seconds.

In safe mode the internet works both pluged into the router or wirelessly.

Ive ran both malawarebytes and McAfee security suit with the atest updates and neither programs found anything. Also ran a TDSS killer and it didnt find anything either. I have also checked the proxy setting and its unchecked in normal mode.

Thanks for all the help, Im not very good with compuers so I hope I have provided enought info and formated everything right.

Thanks

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode

Hi -

Remove McAfee Internet Security --> http://jcgriff2.com/A-V_Removal_Tool...e_Removal.html

3rd party firewalls tend to block local NETBIOS ports causing system services to hang or crash in Windows 7 and Vista systems.

Also, you are running Vista SP1 and need to install all outstanding Windows Updates, including Vista SP2. It is likely that the McAfee firewall is blocking Windows Updates, specifically SP2.

Prep Work for SP2 --> http://jcgriff2.com/0x1/Vista_SP_Prepwork.html

I am working on a friends computer, she had several trojans and a hijacker. I have run malware bytes, superantispy, spybot, cc cleaner and combofix. Everything is gone and the registry is clear except neither internet explorer nor firefox will run in regular mode only in safe mode. Proxy settings are cleared so that's not the issue either. I am at a complete loss here...help!

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode

check the plugins and addons in FF.

I have an IBM T41 XP SP2 that was connecting fine then connected for 5 min or so and had to reboot to get back on line. Now it wont connect at all unless in safe mode. Have 2 other computers in the house that work fine one is wired one is wireless. The one having issues will not work wired or wireless. Have tried adware virus scan search and destroy, and malware. Still no go. Thanks in advance.

Attached is my Hijack this log

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode

What were you doing that required you to reboot? A possible software installation or update that may have knocked the ethernet and wifi drivers out of wack.

have you checked your tcp/ip settings? are you getting an ip at all? is it set to dhcp or set to static ip?

Also when you open your browser in the network settings. It could be possible that theres a proxy ip in the settings. This can be caused by adware and spyware. Though you said scans came up clean, its still worth to check.

What browser are you running? Internet explorer, firefox, google chrome?

Also what antivirus/firewall software are you running.

I do see black ice in the hijackthis log.

Also have you checked device manager to see if there are any driver issues with the Ethernet card or wireless card? I highly doubt this is a driver issue. Not to often do i see both wired and wireless drivers go bad. But i have very rarely seen a computer lose all its drivers due to a virus.

Hijack this log really didnt really show me much that could cause the problem.

im on a Dell laptop with windows XP with sp2

My internet was going fine and then all of the sudden it stopped working. If i restart it works for one or two IE pages but is really slow. AIM works but is also really slow. But I can use both fine on Safe mode with networking. Any thoughts? I'm assuming its some sort of process messing it up.

Answer:Internet only works on Safe Mode?

Could be a hijacking issue, maybe? spyware is also possible. i'd try downloading ad-aware, cleaning out the spyware and seeing if that helps. could also be a virus, to be honest.

HELP! my computer did have a virus vuhesysguard.exe.. but I think it's got more going on than just that. I ran our kaspersky but it doesn't help...... I have a HJT Log and know that some things look odd..but I don't want to just start deleting. Can I compare the two HJT logs(one done while in safe mode and one done in normal mode) and delete differences or no? I wanted to fix this myself, HOWEVER, I am NOT a genius. I need help.Thank you ahead of time, Kelli :)

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode...

No, that will not work. HJT logs seldom reveal all of the problem files, sometime none. The newer viri/spyware have become so aggressive and complex even the best veteran removal geeks have a workout just trying to be successful at their extermination. If you can't read the HJT logs yet get help and get a junk computer to infect and get in a bootcamp to learn the removal techniques

I never used firewall, antivirus, nothing. Just this morning my PC pretended to be on the net saying "Internet access". Then nothing would work. Couldn't go to my gateway IP, nothing.

I'm on the phone with AT&T forever. I go in safe mode, now, my modem works. Everytime I go into normal mode it does not access, shows me a yellow caution sign.

My friend told me go with Spybot Seek&Destroy I believe. Ran it here in safe, got rid of some conflicts, still cannot get on the net in normal mode.

AT&T wants me to call them tomorrow to get a bulky CD from them to "update". Or I can get a technician here, get charged, and he can just say "There is connection, do not know why your PC is not using it."

I don't understand @ all. When I first got my PC I just plugged in my modem and I was on the net. In dire need of assistance. Sorry for overtyping.

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode.

You said "I never used firewall, antivirus, nothing".

My guess would be you have some malware. Go to one of the malware removal sites, register and provide the info they ask for. They can help you determine if you do have a problem or not. Some of the sites I'm aware of:

GeeksToGo.com

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode

Define Internet? Your internet browser or your connection?
Type:
Ping www.google.com
into command promt and see if you get ping replies.
If you do, it means you have internet but your browser doesn't, so it's either set up incorrectly or something (a crash?) caused something to be damaged. Try either reinstalling your browser or trying a new browser.

If you don't get ping replies, and you're not connected to the internet at all, that means that something that runs in normal mode (that doesn't in safe mode) is blocking your internet, or causing your connection settings to change. If your connection settings are all correct, then it may be a malicious program? I'm just guessing I dont know much in this field, but I would advise scanning for viruses and see what happens.

Good luck

I think I have a virus/trojan problem but I can't connect to the internet in regular windows. But when I load it up in Safe mode the internet works fine. Also I can ping anywhere on the internet in regular mode. I am running Windows Xp media edition and its a dell XPS 400. Also after trying to do the removal process that you have ask us to do I can't run spybot and CCleaner in regular windows or safe mode.

Answer:Internet works only in Safe Mode

Are you sure you are not blocking anything with your antivirus or with your firewall? Try shutting them down in normal boot mode and see if you have internet access.

If you have run the READ & RUN ME, where are the requested logs that are supposed to accompany a request for help?

My problem first began with just a whole bunch of pop-ups coming up really quickly. After attempting to remove all of the spyware which was causing these pop-ups (With Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware), my internet will not work at all in normal mode. It re-directs to a page starting with something like www.searchclickads.net/, but it won't display the page, nor any other page for that matter. The only way that I can get internet to work is by re-booting into safe mode and using it that way (like I am now). Tried to use system restore, but, suprise suprise, none of the system restore points that I had would work. I then heard about CWS spyware, so I decided to run CWShredder, and I found both CWS.BootConf and CWS.Svchost32, which I removed. The problem still remains now after turning off system restore, and then running the following programs from Safe Mode:

1) SpyBot S&D
2) Ad-Aware SE Personal
3) CWShredder
4) CCleaner
5) Kill2Me.exe
6) XoftSpy 4.15

I also used Hijackthis as described in the new user tutorial on the main forum page, logging on in Safe Mode as the Administrator, and then proceeding to:

1) Remove 3 items with start page settings which I did not put there myself
2) Running REGEDIT and searchingn the reg keys for inetcpl.cpl - it was not there
3) Searching my HD for any .hta, .js file extensions. I found 2 .hta files which did not appear to have any links within them, but I found 218 files containing the .js extension, and figured going through all of th... Read more

Hi and welcome to TSG

You have no anti-virus protection.
Get AVG (it's free): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Then click here to download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

· Install Ewido.
· During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
· Launch ewido.
· It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen.
· On the left side of the main screen click update.
· Click on Start and let it update.
· DO NOT run a scan yet.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode now.
Perform the following steps in Safe Mode:

* Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your desktop.

Reboot.

Post a new Hijack This log (from Normal Mode) and the results of the Ewido scan.

Hello...

At around 7pm i noticed that i was having issues. I have wireless. My wireless connection icon was perfectly fine and connected with great strength, however when i clicked on firefox to go to my homepage, it said page not found. it did the same with internet explorer.

I restarted my computer and tried again...same thing.

Then, i booted my computer in safe mode with networking...my internet is perfect and works fine.

What the heck is going on???

I have Nod 32 Smart security 4 running and do spyware and adaware scans regularly. I have a firewall up too.

I checked device manager to make sure nothing is wrong and there were no problems.

I tried connecting to the internet directly by using my dsl cable in regular mode...still same problem.

please help me. i have so much homework due and i cant afford to loose my internet.

i am running windows vista home premium on a HP dv6812nr laptop.

Answer:Internet Only Works in Safe Mode?

Recently I've seen a rash of problems caused by internet security apps. Typically this involves programs that manage antivirus, antispyware, and a firewall all in one program.

The "test" for this is to remove the internet security app and see if you can connect. Make sure to have an alternative antivirus available so that you don't become infected while testing.

I have no experience with the NOD32 Smart Security program, so this is all speculation on my part.

Hey guys!!
Ok so heres the problem. Before my dilemma, my internet was almost perfect (well thats because it was running slow) but now, i cant get onto my internet browser (Google Chrome) as normal. My brother did a few "updates" as my computer was running slow and he hated it. I can't remember exactly what he installed but at the end of it, it prevented me from accessing the internet as normal. instead, it works well in safe mode (which I now hate).

My brother believed that a certain program is blocking my internet connection and has labeled it as "unsafe" because when i tried to go on Google Chrome it said "Error 103 CONNECTION ABORTED" which really sucks. I had AVG but my brother thought that it might be the problem so I uninstalled it. As a replacement, I installed Avast. But still, I did not get my internet connection running smoothly. I have been trying everything but i'm not a pro at this sadly. PLEASE HELP

Answer:Internet only works in safe mode, help!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThisMake sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6

I think I have a virus/trojan problem but I can't connect to the internet in regular windows. But when I load it up in Safe mode the internet works fine. Also I can ping anywhere on the internet in regular mode. I am running Windows Xp home edition and its a dell XPS 400.

Answer:Internet Only works in Safe Mode

I would start here.
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 But would hold off on posting in malware, just would start with that to clear up some general possibilities. Also have you tried a different browser when in normal mode? Like ie if using Firefox or Firefox if ie. Also if you use outlook or outlook express for mail does that still work in normal mode?

Hi there,
I have post-virus (trojan horse) removal problems. In normal start mode I can get the desktop but no programs start and Control Alt Delete does nothing. Safe mode does work. I can see someone posted a similar problem (hello4 virus post) and there are some standard steps to take, which I will do, and post the log.

Two questions first: I ran an avast scan and about twenty files were quarantined. Should I unquartantine them before running the new programs that you recommend? Can I do all of this in safe mode?
Thanks in advance-Jill

Answer:internet only works in safe mode w/ networking

Ok, so for anyone wondering, I could not find out what was causing my browsers to not work correctly. I decided to just restart my computer back to its factory setting from once I bought it from the store. My browsers work fine now. I still do not know what was causing the problems. If I had any restore points set I would have reset my computer back to a earlier time. I am sure this would have fixed everything. If you are having this same problem with your browsers, I recommend you reset your computer to a earlier restore point.

Hi

I'm new here and having some issues with the after effects of a virus. I removed it in safe mode with both AVAST and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Now I can no longer access the Internet in the Normal Mode of Windows 7. I am connected but the browers, Internet Explorer and Firefox, don't work.

Here is my HiJack log.

I tried measures such as resetting the connection, however the window freezes up when I click "Disable" and have to restart explorer. I can connect to the internet only in safe mode with networking. Laptops and mobile devices work fine.

At worst cases, the LAN disconnects as well. There are also times the computer freezes up when I open a "heavy" program such as games and hi-res videos.
I have scanned everything from several updated softwares (cureit, avg, search&destroy, etc) both in safe and normal mode and they have detected no malware at all.

This is already beyond my comprehension and I appreciate any help. If I missed any details, please inform me as I'm mostly online nowadays (currently just in Safe Mode)

Hello,
I need your help. My Dell Latitude 620 laptop now has WIN 7 32 bit. It ran fine for about 2 weeks after the install of WIN 7 last February, but now it's a mess: I cannot get get any internet pages to work well, it is very sluggish, and MS Office 2010 does not seem as compatible as on my HP desktop with Win7.

Hopefully, the logfile from HijackThis will suffice instead of TSG SysInfo. If not, I can do the latter in safe mode as well. the Logfile follows. I hope you can help and thank you.

Hi,

Basically, 2 days ago my internet suddenly wouldn't load whenever I went on it. It'd open up when I clicked on the icon but it would permanently stay a blank page, 'loading' the homepage. If I tried to enter a different website, same thing happens, it just forever stays loading. Not even the Internet Explorer troubleshooter message comes up.But I know my connection is fine because I can still play my MMORPGs and go on Steam if I want.

Things I've tried that haven't worked:

1)Disabled all add-ons.
2)Opening explorer from Start>Run>iexplore.exe
3)Scanning laptop for viruses (Avast+Malwarebytes found nothing)
4)Rebooting both modem and laptop.
5)Using Firefox/Google chrome instead (same problem, they stay 'loading')

I'm currently in Safe Mode right now where it's working fine, but please can someone tell me why it's doing this? I'm using Win7

Answer:Solved: My internet only works in Safe Mode? Please help :/

Try a Clean Boot procedure to isolate a possible culprit.

Your antivirus or firewall could be the culprits.

Hello people! I'm visiting my mom for the holidays and so of course I got roped into her tech problems. She has an emachine with windows 7 that won't browse the internet even though it appears to be connected. The internet works fine in safe mode. She didn't have any antivirus software (in fact, she doesn't have that many programs at all) so I downloaded malware bytes and the scan came back clean.

She has Hughesnet (the satellite people) as her ISP and she says that the problem started after they upgraded her modem.

I'm a bit stumped as to what the problem could be, since all the google searches I did on the topic seemed to be some kind of problem with antivirus software (having two conflicting, or some kind of wonky settings) or a virus, neither of which seems to be the case. I installed Hijack This on her PC but since it's 64 bit I don't know if this result is very helpful.

Any guidance you guys could send my way would be super appreciated!

Hello everyone,

I have a compaq laptop(windows xp prof sp2, 1 gb ram, intel solo core 1.86 GHz). One week back, I came to my brother's home. As he stays out for most of the day, I tried using my laptop wid the server configuration he uses on his desktop(the i.p, and all the dns server settings). It worked fine every other time I visited his place but this time some problem crept in. I am able to use the net only in the safe mode. In the normal mode, the LAN stays connected but the ping command isnt able to get any reply from the server. In the safe mode, the net seems to work without any flaw. I searched on the net about this problem but couldnt find any solution that cud fix it. And then, I decided to format the comp. and an hour back, finished formatting. To my surprise, the problem still persists and I have no idea how to get rid of it. Please help me wid this problem.

Thanks in advance...I'll be waiting for ur replies!!!

We bought a Dell XPS 15 laptop a few weeks ago and it has been working perfectly until yesterday. The internet (wifi) is connected at a strong signal but will not access unless it is in safe mode with networking.

All other devices are working fine on the wifi (ipad, iphones).

I apologise in advance as I am not particularly computer savvy, but I'm hoping someone can help!

I've been searching the net up and down trying to figure out how to fix this problem, and I came across another thread on this site from May with someone having the SAME problem..

Here's what's up - I have a friend with a laptop who connects to his friend's internet connection wirelessly, and he was having some spyware/pop-up problems.. So I went over and we turned the laptop on, and like usual, it took a couple minutes to connect to the network.. I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, and Hijack this, and did some scans and got rid of all his pop-ups.. I also downloaded Firefox too.. We restarted the computer after all that, and the internet connection showed as active eventually - but the browser would NOT work..

I restarted into Safe Mode, and opened Firefox right up - and miraculously the internet connection was working immediately.. Now I've been over there messing with it numerous times, and I'm having no luck.. I tried it with IE7, and that browser doesn't work either.. I went into msconfig, and unchecked all the boxes under Startup - still nothing.. Firewall on or off makes no difference either..

So I was looking at the Network settings in Safe vs. Normal mode.. In Safe Mode, all it shows is the 802.11b wireless connection [I forget the brand of it], and it shows it as obviously working.. Now under Normal Mode, it shows not only THAT - but it shows an NVIDIA ethernet adaptor with an X over it in the status bar.. If I open it u... Read more

I should probably start by saying that all of my problems began after a trojan removal by malwarebytes. I had 2 trojans found and removed by malwarebytes and subsequently I lost my internet access through internet explorer. Internet explorer however does work in safe mode. I've been using malwarebytes for years and have never had a problem with it before, so I'm not inclinded to believe that it has caused the problem. What is strange is that my computer shows that I have full access to the internet, and this is validated because I have a remote access program that is working like a champ. Norton has access and those are the only two programs that do have access. Oh and internet explorer, turbo tax, google chrome etc all work just fine and have access in safe mode with networking. The log for the malwarebytes scan is right below the list of things I have tried. It says that all of the trojans have been removed successfully so I'd say that my computer is clean of spyware that might stop my computer from access.

ipconfig /release and reset
dns flushed
winsock and tcp/ip set back to defaults (i'm sure there's a technical term for all of this but I don't know it)

clean boot (all the services etc turned off...although for some reason I can't turn the norton service off)

OK This is my first post here but I've spent a bit of time reading the blurb before posting so here goes...A while ago I got one of those MSN bugs where it posts to all contacts. I removed it using the tool from msnvirusremoval.com. This appeared to work until the other day when it did the usual bug thing but didn't actually post to my contacts. On the 14th I left my PC on while at work and the internet was down when I returned. I've checked the line/modem etc. I'm using wired dsl (I assume as its through the phone line) This is a plug and play kinda thing. If I reboot I can use the internet for maybe 5 mins before it DCs. Programs lose connectivity in a strange fashion e.g IE/Mozilla stop then Second Life will DC but iTunes will remain connected to a streaming radio station (uses port 3780 or 3870 I think)?!My PC:Running XP Pro SP2 Home edIE5 and MozillaSays Hi-Grade on the case but it is a bit of a custom buildHas a Pentium 4 and a gig of RAMRunning AVG free and windows firewalllatest dodgy thing I did with it was a torrent DL (incomplete)Only red X in Device manager is the wireless NICOnly issue in Event Viewer appears to be my webcam (predates my issue)Steps I have tried:Rebooting modem/PC - only works for 5 minsRemoved MSN and all registry links to itDL'd AVG free and ran scans - only tracking cookies foundDL'd reg cleaner and cleaned out all the crap it foundUsed HJT and removed a few startup items that I didn't needUsed the winsockXPfix thing as IE tells me t... Answer:Internet Only Works In Safe Mode With Networking

Additional info:

I can connect with a Win2k laptop but the connection is ridiculously slow. Does this mean its just an ISP issue? The PC will only manage 20 mins max but the laptop has managed to use the connection for over an hour?!?

Also I am trying to DL Live messenger and it says it will take 5hrs. Is this conclusive evidence that there is nothing wrong with the PC?
