100% CPU USAGE. WTF? how did this happen?

Question: 100% CPU USAGE. WTF? how did this happen?

my laptop running windows 7 home premium always has 100% cpu usage when running in normal mode, so it's slowed down a lot.
and if i remember correctly in doesn't execute rundll.exe always in the past, but now it's always present in the running processes. so it could be related..
anyone could help me here?

Preferred Solution: 100% CPU USAGE. WTF? how did this happen?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

Answer:Bsod never happen, now its happen

Troubleshooting a counterfeit installation is useless as it is not known what has been modified to your system.
A counterfeit installation contains heavily modified code which causes the system to behave in unexpected ways.
For this reason, analyzing counterfeit systems is unreliable and most analysts won't try it.
I recommend to install a genuine copy of Windows.
If, after you have installed a genuine copy of Windows, you still get BSOD's we'll be happy to assist you.

I am running windows xp home (legal Copy), I bought and activated it about 6 months ago. Well today, actually a little while ago I went in to my msconfig settings to stop certain services from running in the background. Well, when I was done, I restarted the computer and a Message Popped up saying "Since windows was first activated on this computer, the hardware on the computer has changed significantly, and that I needed to reactivate windows. I never changed anything, this happened right after I was in msconfig changing startup programs and services. Does anyone no what might have triggered this off?

Answer:Why did this Happen?

Not sure of a service that would do that, but if you have to, I have called Microsoft before and its quick and they were very helpful. Maybe someone else will know of a service that could cause this and will respond.

FYI, in the future, you get more help when you use a better topic, in other words, this topic might draw the attention of someone who could help if it had a title like "Windows XP wants to be reactivated" or "Services that cause activation to reset" as examples

When I press CTL-ALT-Delete to lookat the processes running, the box is different than it was. There is no way of closing it. The top bar is gone. No blue band, no black cross to close it out, no text list of options along the top, and no tabs to change what I am looking at.

Anybody have any ideas what happened, and how I can get the old box back?

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Are you overstating your problem????

If all of your files have been erased how are you coming here? And how could you get a HijackThis log on a PC that has no files on it? Your PC would not run?

If you have truly erased all of your files HJT is not going to help you and we will not be able to help you either.

Question: Can This Happen

Hello everyone!
Okay you hear the horror story's so here's another.
I am on a Dell 2400/Windows XP2/Pent 4/CPU 2.66ghz/2.66GHz,256MB
of Ram/System Mechanic Pro 6 with anti-virus &firewall Realtime protection.
Auto update everything!! plus I check regularly for updates, do system scans, disk clean/
disk defrag/Had CCleaner installed but not regular with it and it is auto
updated as well.
Might have noticed that "had" finally coming around. Totally wiped out and it was so
abrupt that I could not even see what had happened as far as error warning window
or some other typical pop-up window saying your ass is out LOL...Only way I know to
put it. Fried my hard drive so of course lost everything so I slammed a dinosaur hard
drive from an old dell tower with windows 98 on it so I deleted the partition/began a new
one and installed XP and that's how I got here.
The question is simple: I was online when it happened. I was running the Mozilla Firefox
web browser fully updated and set to mostly recommended settings. System Pro 6
was running complete with Anit-virus/anti-hacker/real time protection/Medium on the
firewall settings. I had no tabs open/no porn sires for me/was not in my e-mail box
or the websites own message center. I was on someone's page writing a comment.
The site says it could not happen through thier website and therefore they were not
responsible in any way. True or False? If not how did I get popped?
Thanks for all ... Read more

Answer:Can This Happen

Hello,

It is doable, but would be unlikely. your security protection looks solid enough.

have you tried putting the fried hard drive in as a slave? you might be able to recover data (unless the HDDs reading heads were ripped off)
Also your isp might have monitored the event, you might want to give them a call.

Answer:Why Does This Happen To ME !!

Nope.

We'd like to have a closer look at your configuration.
Please do this:

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip it, launch Hijack This, then press "Config" > "Miscellaneous Tools", and press "Generate Startuplist Log"

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

Go to Edit > select all, copy it and post its contents here.

Well for starters tell us your computer specs, also tell us what tv and monitor you have.
While you do this, unplug the cable from your tv to your computer.
Next go into your vga properties and set the display back to your monitor.
Change display settings on multiple monitors
Now reboot the computer and see if it still happens.

For some odd reason i'm experiencing a little lag on every game I play on my computer. Let me see if I can explain this in a more proper way; When I move from right to left and the background goes to the left, it goes smoothly, but at the same time lags a little bit. Like it goes smoothly and stops for like 000.01 sec and then goes smooth again, stops, smooth, and so on (when I say 'stop' I mean lag). That shouldn't happen. I have a AMD XP 2400, ATI Radeon 9800pro, 512ddr ram. A friend of mine has similar computer as mine except he has 9600XT. Also, ive upgraded my drivers and have directx 9.0.

This problem occurs on all the games I have. Sure it's not a big of a problem, but it's annoying when it happens and I haven't seen that on my friends computer. Oh, forgot to mention that he has 1024 ddr ram. I was thinking maybe its cuz I have 512 ram and need more? Or maybe its cuz of WinXP? Any suggestions will be appreciated thnx.

I am thinking of buying an "upgrade kit", basically a much better mobo and processor, lots more ram, better sound and video card. It has No hard drive or DVD drives installed, those will come directly from my computer. I have XP installed. my question is, will it:

1. Work great, since XP will detect the new hardware and everything is plug and play now

or

2. Freeze up and refuse to boot since it doesn't recognise all the major changes

or

3. Something in between?

I'm no novice but I haven't tried this before! Any help will be most appreciated!

Answer:What will happen if I do this?

Most likely #3.

Recently there seems to be a surge in people posting on here that are attempting to use their previous hard disk/windows install on a new motherboard with new hardware. This is generally a bad idea.

If you are really set on doing this that way, I would suggest going into your device manager on the old system just before you retire it, and uninstalling about everything you can, probably everything. Then shut down and put your new system together and try and boot. If you get lucky you'll get into Windows. I suspect you'll BSOD along the way though. When this happens you can boot up off your XP disk and try to repair Windows.

I would strongly recommend backing up using XP File and Settings transfer Wizard and saving to a file as opposed to trying to send over network (to a computer that isn't built yet). That wizard will backup pretty much everything, then you can burn that to a dvd or possibly cds, or better yet put on an external hard drive. Then once you get your NEW Windows installation back you can restore your files from that.

A more risky way to do this if your file is too big for a single dvd would be to defrag then download a gparted disk and see if you can create a new partition with free space, then from within windows format that partition and place the File and Settings Transfer Wizard's file on that. That way you can wipe your existing Windows partition, install there. Then restore those files from the n... Read more

Last night, one of my cousin, who is lowly computer literate was using the PC to transfer some files from his mobile. And he shut down the PC before going to bed. This morning, when i turned the PC on, I am getting administrator password option. I am certain, no one else used the PC and the guy doesn't know much, only copy, paste and shutdown.. you know, all the obvious. He is also not the vindictive type that he would do something deliberately.

So, how what are the quickest steps that he could follow to do all this. Initially, there were no login password set. The steps i know is, go to control panel, choose user account, and then set password. But, the guy was warned not to do anything else, except go to folders and do copy paste.

Well, this is more of a puzzle and guessing game, rather than a tech problem

Question: Can this happen??

Hello All.
I have a question. I used to be a tech at a AOL and now I work for a major long distance company and for the last couple years I hear people say all day that they have no idea how their phone bill is several hundred dollars, and they swear to God they have absolutly no knowledge of adult entertainment internet, and many swear they dont have a computer or will prove no one was home at the time of the calls.
I have never had it happen to me or a friend. But then I use a firewall and virus protection.
The people who call in are highly upset and usually crying.
I like to assume all these people that call in everyday are not liers.
After calling the phone company they then call AOL and scream that AOL made their computer dial international numbers. AOL tells them to call the phone company or McAfee.
Can it be that someone out there is somehow controlling someones elses computer like this?
Hey isnt Kevin Mitnic in jail still?
: )

Answer:Can this happen??

It's not a person, it's software. People download crap from the internet which installs international dialers, unknown to them. They're not liars, they're just ignorant. It's also highly likely that they downloaded commercial software illegally (known as warez). Ask them what software they have installed. If they list expensive items such as PhotoShop, ask them how they can afford all that. Some people are so dense that they'll openly admit to having downloaded it free from some site on the internet.

I have a folder in my PC which I'm 100% sure that it's a spyware. For some reasons malawarebyte doesn't detect it when I scan the folder while my PC booted from ubcd4win. Instead it only detects it when scan in normal XP mode. Why?

Answer:Why does this happen?

Scanning with MBAM in safe or normal mode will work but removal functions are not as powerful in safe mode. MBAM is designed to be at full power when malware is running so safe mode is not necessary when using it. In fact, it loses some effectiveness for detection & removal when used in safe mode because the program includes a special driver which does not work unless you boot XP normally. Additionally, scanning from a bootable disk or from safe mode prevents some types of malware from running so it may be missed during the detection process. For optimal removal, normal mode is recommended so it does not limit the abilities of MBAM.~Blade

Is it possible that a bad stick of Ram can dammage a Motherboard? I dont mean cause files to be corrupt or cause bad installations. I mean physically dammage the Motherboard to the point of total system failure.

Also, Is it possible for a Motherboard to dammage a Video Card so that it is only usable in 2D mode??

Not looking for "I think so's" I really need to know for sure if these can happen.

I have been working on comps for 8 years and never had either happen before. But it seems that one or the other has happened to my high end system.

Answer:Can this really happen?

Your problem is your looking for an absolute yes or no, without testing each component we can't know for sure.

But to answer your question is it possible for ram to damage a motherboard?

YES, although very unlikely. The ram would have to fail in a very specific way allowing it to overheat badly enough to cause one of the ram chips to fuse the ground to a voltage (either internally inside the chip or on the solder contacts) And yes a long time ago I did encounter a bad ram chip that caused a trace on the mobo to pop.

Is it possible for a motherboard to damage a video card?

Yes, it has happened to me on the agp slot. I had one motherboard that had the voltage regulation to the agp slot so out of wack that the card was damaged by the nearly 5v that wasn't supposed to be there.

NORMALLY if your video card won't do 3d its due to a number of other factors however.

1. The video card itself overheated or has bad ram chips in the area used for 3d memory storage (which could be caused by a mobo)

2. The mobo itself is unstable and has some low level incompatibility with the card for whatever reason (try the card in another system to check)

3. Your drivers are improperly installed or your windows install is fudged and doesn't want to work with the drivers (sometimes another device conflicts with the card in such a way that the 3d is broken)

The first thing I would suspect would be the power supply.

Good Luck

Question: Can this happen.?

If your computer is infected, and you plug an iPod in, will the iPod become infected.?
Yes, because it is now attached.?
Or no, because the malware is not directed to infect iPods.?

Thank you,

Answer:Can this happen.?

If your iPod has disk mode, then it uses an AUTORUN.INF file to know what to do when it is plugged in. Therefore, an ipod CAN BE infected.

When your dowloading something ex. "windows live messange" or whatever. U get a window but before u get the window, "does your pc screen flash like a black screen", that last for 1 second then you click "yes or allow". The window appears after the file is downloaded and has a black background. I click "yes or allow" the screen flashes again BUT!!!! this time the screen stays black the whole time and I have to shut it down manually by pressing and holding the PC power button. u know wat im sayn. Is something wrong with my computer or something??or am i not the only one??

I hate it........alot!! now im scared of downloading something. So has this ever happen to anyone. (do u know what im talking about??)

Answer:Hey!....yes you, has this happen to you??

Mine sometimes stays blanks for about 3-5 seconds depending what the current load is on the CPU but it has never crashed on that screen.
Sometimes it hangs on downloads for about 5-10 seconds. So give it some time. Thats what i do.. I think it maybe a bug in Vista so hopefully Microsoft will have it sorted soon.

Question: What will happen?

I'm getting a new cpu(I5 650)/motherboard(Asus P7P55D-E) and ssd(Corsaid Nova 64gb) and plan on doing a clean install on the ssd - without the sata drives connected.

Will anything happen when I connect my old SATA drives with windows 7 on one of them? Will that windows 7 be recognized? Should I format that partition? If so, before or after entering win7?

Afterward... when I do a back-up and system image to my USB drive, will it just write over the version from the sata drive, or do I have to remove/delete it from the USB drive before doing that backup/sys image?

Trying to avoid surprises, I'm a geek, afterall.

Answer:What will happen?

Hello michaelst.

After you have Windows 7 installed on the SSD and the new hardware you can use the #7 info in this tutorial to wipe / over-write the data on the HDD after it has been connected to the mobo; just do the install to the SSD with that being the only one connected so you don't have a dual boot to sort out before the "old" Windows 7 can be removed.

Just be sure to make backups of anything you want to save before you do the wipe (secure erase) to the HDD as any data left will be unrecoverable afterward; using this method will not let you over-write the wrong OS and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

My IP address according to MySQL & ipconfig has clearly been 192.xxx.x.2 for some time now

Woke up this morning to find I couldn't access my website...So i checked my IP address again and it's changed to 192.xxx.x.3

Any idea what would cause this?

The only IP checking software I have is synchronising software from DynDNS and that on Synchronises my router IP with my host address.

Answer:Why would this happen?

whats the range for PC IP's router should 192.168.x.1 but if it got confused and used two it would bump pc to 192.168.x.3. Im assuming you have strong UID and pword in router and that John is not joshing you.<g>

A couple of days ago I was taking advantage of the local library's wi-fi using my HP laptop (Vista Home Premium) and updating laptop and iPhone 3G preparatory to restoring the phone to factory. Had the phone hooked up to the laptop, syncing and backing up. I have no idea how this happened but the webpages on my laptop were so enormous I couldn't get to the red X to shut them down, and I got a message about how (itunes maybe?) would no longer work with this version of Windows, the gist of the message was that my OS version was so old it was incompatible with iTunes and I needed to change the resolution, which I tried to do, but it wouldn't "stick", kept going back to this enormous view. I don't recall clicking on anything that might have been a virus and I always try to stay updated re Microsoft Security Essentials and I think I also run McAfee VirusScan courtesy of AOL (but use Microsoft's firewall, not McAfee's.)

I finally had to just force my laptop to shut down. Can someone give me an idea of what happened, how it might have happened, and what to do about it? I'm going to try the laptop again, but I have only dialup at home and there's no modem installed on the laptop. Which brings up another question, possible for another forum, but can I use an ethernet cable to hook the laptop up directly to my Compaq Presario desktop (Vista Home Basic) to access the internet through the desktop's dialup? Just wondered. Thought abo... Read more

Question: What may happen?

Ok as some of you may know I run XP on a 233mhz with 128mb.
Today I got a PIII 450 but found the board will only support up to 300mhz.
I re-inserted the 233mhz but I altered the setting in the bios to run at 300.
Is it running at 300 or just pretending to be and, if it is, what's the long term effects?

Have a laptop that a friend asked me to clean up, he said it had a virus. When I first booted up, the desktop is solid blue with a message in yellow that states there is a virus, and to activate AntiVirus 2008. I was somewhat familiar with this "antivirus" program, so I was going to just follow standard protocol for tracing/removing & cleaning. But....

When explorer started, I also noticed an instance of iexplorer.exe running in the processes. I killed it and then the fun started

explorer and the desktop began restarting and stopping about every 5 seconds, making it very difficult to do much of anything, so I opened a cmd window and worked through the dos shell to begin searching and removing..

His norton was jacked up as was just about everything else, but I could never stop the thing from stopping & restarting. It would not interfere with the cmd window though, just pulled the focus away from the window each time. The most perplexing thing was that there were no erroneous processes running other than iexplorer starting about half the time when explorer would restart, so I figured it had taken over one of the 8 standard processes that were running, I just could not find which one.

I eventually just moved his personal data and did the system recovery from the utility partition.

I guess my question is, is this a standard malfunction that this creates and most important, is there a removal tool that works so that a reinstall of the system is not necessar... Read more

First off, if you're wanting to upgrade your board, you may not need a sound card. Most boards have on-board audio these days, and some have on-board video.

But the answer is NO. You can't just put in all that new hardware and plug in your old HDD and expect it to work right.

Hi, my system has been entirely predictable, up until I booted it up tonight. Althought I don't think this had anything to do with it, I always exit Quicktime and EA Link (which are on the tool bar) as soon as I get to the desktop. I've done this a million times. But once I was done with that tonight, this happened:

There must have been one hundred .exe's on my applications tab of windows task manager. I have no idea what caused it. I have since gotten rid of those, but a few small windows won't dissapear at all. What do you think caused this? I have AVG running a scan right now, I'll update you later. Thanks.

Yesterday I saw this application error on my screen:
Application popup: defrag.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x77f83aef" referenced memory at "0x01001658". The memory could not be "written".

Only problem is I did not run Defrag and nobody else touched the machine. There are no scripts, batch files, or Scheduled Tasks to run it, and our IT group reports they do not defrag machines remotely. I am in charge of 12 XP Pro SP1 machines all on the same domain and have not seen the same thing on any except this one (so that kind of confirms what IT said). The same error popped up last Friday with the same addresses. Ideas?

Question: what would happen

What would happen if I attempted to install a brand new XPpro over an exisiting (but different serial) copy?

Thanks

Answer:what would happen

What would happen if you attempted to install a brand new Windows XP Pro Operating System over an existing one?

Well.. Depending on how good you are at it, it should install a brand new Windows XP Pro Operating System over an existing one.

If you'd be doing this because of a bad serial issue, you should know that you CAN change your serial AFTER Windows XP is already installed. So rather than reinstalling it, you could just update the serial.

Hello. i have a question maybe someone can provide some insight. i joined a national job seekers website. i created a profile and linked up with several people who had similar skills in my line of work. one day i visited the site to add an update to my account, only to find my entire contacts list was posted on my profile page. i'm not talking about contacts for job recruiters i employed in the past, but even personal friends who had nothing to do with my job search. I didn't give them this information, it just suddenly appeared. How were they able to obtain all of this information from my PC?

Thank you

Answer:how did this happen?

Software, knowingly or unknowingly, was downloaded to your computer and it found your address book(s).
You may have even allowed it according to their EULA....terms of use.

Facebook in its early days did this. When someone signed up, Facebook would send them an email that contained
software that would find and send their address book info back to Facebook and then Facebook would spam every one of
the addresses.

I saw a TIF file and a DAT file in my picture folder... I NEVER MADE these. The TIF file was of a picture I made in paint a long time ago, but it was modified and there were spots all over it. If I didn't do this, how could this have happened? I deleted the TIF file and the DAT file. I should have saved this so I could have showed you guys. But hopefully you can shed some light on my problem. Thanks!

Could it be because I got a new scanner yesterday? I don't know how they could be linked but.... who knows.

tif = in this case temporary image file. This is a file created when you rotate an image with windows picture previewer. The .dat file was a thumbnail cache file for when you view the folder with thumbnails.

- Look at my gallery to see a picture of what I am talking about..

Thanks to anyone who can give me advice for this problem.

Answer:Why does this happen?

There are 3 main possible causes:
1) The video card is overheating and is causing the artifacts.
2) Ur PSU is not sufficient enough to run the card properly.
3) Ur using the latest NVIDIA drivers, which cause loaisa problems. Try using 81.98 it solves most of the problems

Last night after I was done with my other computer, I shut it down and went to bed. this morning when I turned it on, I couldn't get it to boot up. I haven't added or removed anything, nor have I changed drivers. How does a computer that was working perfectly for the last 7 months, (when it was built) all of a sudden not be able to boot to the OS??? This is where I absolutely hate these things! I have a good story. Another repair horror story.

I have a co-worker friend that that just does not "get it' when it comes to computer. He got a really nice computer, but did not follow my advice on backing up his info. He told me about his computer was freezing up after a couple minutes. After he did things you should never do to a computer. It was to late to try to save it.
His power supply took out his main board. Before I got a chance to look at it he son-in-law was trying to fix it. And since he never back up his stuff, he gave his son-in-law the hard drive to try to save the info.

Because he can screw up almost anything, I ask for everything that goes to his computer. I like to make sure everything works before I give it back.

I got the tower first. Then after telling him I was not going to touch it with out at least the monitor, I got that. That was my first mistake.

After some testing found out the power supply did take out the main board and he agreed he wanted to go with better hardware. I put in a better power supply, main board, pci video card. Reused his cpu chip and memory. Without knowing it, he bought X-Fi sound card. If I knew he was willing to spend more, I would had him get better memory.

I got everything put together and tested. Ready to install OS, but no hard drive yet. So I ask him if he wanted to buy my spare hard drive. He said yes and away we go. I loaded like I do for most of my friends and got the old hard drive just in time to put ... Read more

Using XP Pro with SP2 installed.

Yesterday I was trying to use the 'Compatibility Wizard' for an old game that I wanted to install. Turns out I mistakenly used the 'Accessibility Wizard' instead, and after getting out of that process I have now been blessed with a new little gremlin to deal with.

Each time I exit Internet Explorer a box appears entitled;

'Formdata (box) 87: The parameter is incorrect' comes up.

This only occurs when I get off the internet (using Internet Explorer). I just click OK and it goes away until I get back on the net and then get off again that it re occurs. The box does not seem to have any real effects to anything?, and does not come up during, or after normal desktop activity, e.g.; I can use Outlook Express and nothing happens. I have a high speed ISP and I am not sure if that factor helps diagnose this issue.

I am not sure what has caused this. However, there could be a relationship to my having used the Accessibility Wizard? This is where one can change text size, large windows titles and menus, etc. I have tried going back into the Accessibility Wizard and trying different settings, but have not been able to get rid of the Formdata box.

I am not sure if there is some default settings that I can use to 'reset' the system so that this box does not appear after exiting Internet Explorer. My 'restore' option does not function correctly; another issue to reslove at a later date...

Any input will be... Read more

Answer:Why does this always happen?!

Turn the laptop off. Turn it back on again and immediately hold down F11. It should boot in to recovery and you can restore Windows from there and factory reset the device. If that doesn't solve the problem, and the problems still occur, it means it is a hardware problem, such as bad RAM or hard drive failing.

A computer a mate has discarded and passed to me- I cleaned-up[took out all reference to previous owner that I could find] and passed it on to an deserving old lady for mainly Internet work..In a phone call to me she complained the a ghost of its previous owner kept haunting the machine- I took this to be, from what she said that his I/D was preventing her using it or cause her to think perhaps she could not. so I went to see it/her and saw she had doing all sorts herself to get around the perceived problem. After clearing a lot of the mischief , several items caused me to scratch my head and to bring it home to poke at during the coming daysHere is one such that to my mind could not happen -but it didDuring its life time it had been on dial-up to one ISP[call it ISP1 ] and then Broadband on another ISP.[Call it ISP2]When I had it , I deleted all the reference to both of these[1&2] and installed her own dial up connection on another ISP entirely.[call it ISP3]and had it working OK both at home and on delivery ,and she too for a while- it failed because of the familiar password corruption[but she would not know that]So this morning I cleaned up her mess and sorted the dial up connection .I then went on to show how to get mail via the web should her dial-up connection corrupt again.I was completely gobsmacked to discover then messages in the mail box for the the original owner addressed to him on ISP 1 waiting in ISP 3 mailbox. This has happened twice so far, since I noticed the problem happening.
I have my dell desktop set to go to sleep mode after 30 minutes, and for the display to never turn off, the only time the display turns off is when the computer goes into sleep mode, both the display and computer will go to sleep simultaneously. But as of two days ago I noticed something strange, sometimes the display will turn off around two-five minutes before the machine itself enters sleep, the first time I saw this happened I was a little confused so I went to my settings and made sure everything was set to the correct value, my computer was set to enter sleep after 30 minutes, and the display was set to never turn off, so I shrugged it off, and chalked it up to a bug or something, but today the same thing happened, I saw the screen go off, and it wasn't until three minutes after that the machine itself went into sleep. After that I tried to test it, and haven't been able to recreate this, I left my computer alone 3 times already, and all three times my computer entered sleep correctly.
So does anyone have any ideas about what could've caused this? I checked my monitor settings, on the monitor itself and there are no settings that can cause this behavior. I'm stumped. Has anyone had similar happenings with their machine? I am using windows 8.1

This has been happening to me for a long time and I'm getting really sick of it.

Whenever I try to load a server list in an online game, my internet always goes out for 5 to 10 minutes. I can't join any games until the server list has fully refreshed and has been sitting there for a few minutes. If I minimize the game and try to surf the web I can't because nothing will load. If I try to play CS:S I click "Join a Game" or whatever and then pick up a book and start reading because I know I'm going to be waiting for 10 minutes before I can play. It just kind of ruins the mood when you want to get into a game and start fragging and instead you have to sit around waiting to play. Even if I use a filter so only a few servers show up, it takes the same amount of time sitting around and waiting. Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening or am I going to have to continue dealing with it?

It's probably picking up something MS Antispyware has `caught` and quarantined safely. Personally I would trust MS Antispyware more than Stop-Sign. Look for `stop-sign` on this page; click here

Hi All,

I went to the Microsoft web site this evening to see what updates were ready to be installed onto my computer. One of the updates was IE 6, with ?new? things. I don?t remember what those ?things? are now, cuz my mind very quickly went into ?dizzy?. When starting to install IE 6, a window popped up stating that installation couldn?t be completed because I need Win XP SP2.

Well, now I?m starting to think that there is something else wrong with my computer because I had seen a LOT of files in my add/remove programs that specifically said SP 2 next to them! So I go look again and geeeze the files I saw were ?SP 2 hot fix? Now, I have not a clue what to do now. Do I uninstall the hot fix? Do I install SP 2 now with the hot fix files still in place? How can a ?hot fix? be installed where there are no files to ?hot fix??

So instead of trying to figure it myself & take the chance of messing things up beyond repair, I came to where the really intelligent people hang out. I need to know what to do, and is this as big of a mess that my gut is telling me it is??

Also, My Mom just had to have her mother board replaced. She took it to a reputable comp service & repair place, so I am assuming the guy knew what he was talking about. He said that my Mom had two different anti virus programs that were more or less fighting each other for ?rights to the kingdom?.

Is this true? Can that happen? I have two A-V programs on my computer also, but I don?t think they are bo... Read more

Answer:Could it Really Happen??

Those SP2 hotfixes are sort of prerelease patches that are included in SP2. You can install over top of them, but do not download SP2 yet. You may have spyware and adware which can cause the upgrade to SP2 to fail.

First off, choose one antivirus program and use that. Two av's can interfere with each other. I wouldn't be surprised if your mom was getting hosed by that guy. Two av's wont like each other but I don't think they'd take it out on a motherboard! I'd suggest getting rid of both and using AVG 6 http://www.grisoft.com Since I installed that one, not a single virus has been detected. It is also important to keep updating the virus definitions and scanning. It's boring, but useful. So, open the Set Program Access and Defaults. Select Add/remove programs. Dump both av's off there.
Next you'll want to make sure you're running a firewall. While it's not the best, the Windows Firewall will do. Open the network connections in control panel. Select Local Area Connection. Click the properties button. Click the advanced tab. Click settings, and that should turn on the Firewall. Later we'll hook you up with a good one.

Next you want to download and run Spybot S+D. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html Make sure you update the definitions, scan then fix everything it finds. Ad-Aware -- http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ Same thing. Update the definitions, scan and fix everything it finds.

This must've been the 20th time I've reformatted my computer this year. It happens often, I turn on my computer, and it will sit on the "Windows XP" loading screen for 3 mins, then will go to a BSOD.

ACCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

I run CHKDSK, tells me hard drive corrupted and cannot be repaired.

I boot the reinstallation CD, and it tells me cannot be repaired, hard drive C is corrupted.

So I go through the daunting task of reformatting, reinstalling windows, then reinstalling all my programs.

OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

What's wrong with my computer?

Question: What will happen?

Didn't know whether to ask here or in the setup thread. I have Windows 7 & 8 as a dual boot on the same hard drive. I need to re-install Windows 7. I assume Windows 8 has control of the MBR, so what will happen to Windows 8, will 7 override the MBR and if so how do I get 8 back again?
Windows 7 just crashed, screen went blank and now it's a nightmare to use.

Answer:What will happen?

\Windows\Minidump

You can copy the files in there to any other folder then zip them. Attach the zip here and we can see what is going wrong.

Use safe mode + networking if needed.

If you just reinstall 7, you'll likely end up in the same place anyhow eventually, from doing the things you normally do (which caused the issue in the first place.)

So I use a program on my PC that always starts up in windowed mode, meaning I can use my taskbar ect while using the program since it's a window, but randomly today for some odd reason it started up in fullscreen mode, I know you can make it go fullscreen by clicked the top twice or pressing the little window icon on the top right but I didn't do either of those. It just randomly started on it's own in fullscreen.

Answer:Why did this happen?

Probably during one earlier session, the upper right hand corner square was clicked, full-screen mode is now default. Next time you're in that program, if you see a tiny double-square image in the upper right-hand corner, click it. That should return your program to the regular Window'd mode. I've done the above several times, so I'm used to changing fullscreen back to regular window'd screen

what happened to ibm's os/2 while it was better than windows at the time?

Answer:What happen to OS/2?

It required a lot more memory even for business class workstations (at a time when memory was still very expensive), had poor driver support for just about anything not made by IBM and frankly had a lot of IBM's anti-intutative UI features (after OS/2 died it seems like those efforts where transfered to the Lotus Notes UI). It's support for existing DOS and 16bit Windows apps was not that greatdespite IBM having all the source code to both those operating systems.

The poor support for existing hardware and software wouldn't have been too bad if that fancy 32bit protected mode multitasking could be used to bring in apps not possible in Windows and DOS, but IBM was firmly committed to killing this too. Back then you couldn't walk 3 feet at a developer tradeshow without a Microsoft rep handing you a free stack of disks with the Windows SDK and a pin or sticker proclaiming how you wanted your next application to be developed for Windows. Down at the IBM booth, assuming you could get a guy who would do more then just blow hot air at you, you could buy the OS/2 SDK for the low tradeshow price of just $300.

OS/2 began as a joint project between MS and IBM (there was for a time Microsoft OS/2, just like there was IBM DOS). At the time Microsoft sang the praises of OS/2 because it seemed like the only sure way forward - sure they could dump millions and the best talent on 16bit Windows, but because Windows was just a shell over DOS it was still possible for a guy... Take a harddrive out that already has windows installed on it from a packaged HP computer and put the harddrive in a custom pc. Would it still boot windows or would windows know its not the 'proper' assigned hardware that came with the PC?

Thanks

Foz

Answer:What would happen if you do this....

It depends, mainly on the hardware differences in the two machines. Since you said from a HP to a custom box, you ar going to have problems.

It will probably boot into windows but you are going to have tons of driver issues.

My personal rule of thumb is if the motherboards are even more than slightly different, do a fresh install.

I fixed a friends netbook with some spyware and gave it back to him and a couple of hours later he calls me and says that he got a lot of pop ups saying the machine may be infected.
The netbook had a fresh install of Windows 7 Starter and Mozilla Firefox.

I asked him where he browsed and he said Fox News for about 30 seconds and then to his site, esac.us.

Well, I looked at the history and he used google to search for both fox news and esac.us
I replicated the pop ups on the netbook by searching for fox news in google, then searching for esac.us in google.

and I just did it on this XP machine, googled for fox news, then googled for esac.us, then clicked on the first link which is his site and it popped up saying that the site 87.xx.xx..xx was a reported attack site.

Just tried with IE and Malware bytes blocked the site.

typing in esac.us in the address bar doesn't bring up any warnings.

Do you think there is something on the site or is it something wrong with google?

using IE and Yahoo to search for esac.us and clicking on it causes Malwarebytes to block it.

Answer:How does this happen?

That's because the google result may be for an old site or something because 87.248.180.90 (the IP from the google result) is not the IP address for esac.us which is 66.69.131.19

Which upon further review would seem to be some sort of compromise of the site by the first address.

Ok, I have an HP notebook that is about three years old. It has no screen (accident) so I have it hooked up to a CRTT and used it as a desktop replacement. I turned it on the other day and it boots to a blue screen that says:

Boot from:
HARDDRIVE
CDROMDRIVE
LAN

I tried clicking on HARDRIVE and it rebooted to the same screen. I tried rebooting with my winXP CD and it booted to the same screen. My roommate started into the BIOS (I think is what he called it) and said it looks like the HD is not recognized in the BIOS. After he rebooted it to the BIOS (?) he tried to reboot into safemode, but now I cannot get the CRT to recognize it is plugged to the notebook. I turn on the notebook, then I turn on the monitor. The light on the monitor is green then turns orange and no screen. By the way, the monitor is also an HP from the same year as the notebook. I tried using the function key and correspoding F key for switching the screen and nothing happens.

Any ideas? I don't care if I loose anything on this notebook, it is just for my sons kid game, but he sure would like to play and I get the darn notebook to come on. Thanks in advance for any help.
