missing menus/toolbars/options...

Question: missing menus/toolbars/options...

I have a Dell desktop with MS Windows XP Professional, version 2002, service pack 3. The PC info is

Intel®
Pentium ® 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79 GHz, 0.99GB of RAM

First, I've tried System Restore and no matter what data I pick, it won't work.

I want to password protect my computer however setting a password only works when I log out the computer. I discovered that if you simple shut down and restart, it won't ask for the password. I wanted to set that ctrl+alt+del thing but when I go to the user account area where it tells me to do that, there is no menu or toolbar to be able to select Advanced Options as the help menu tells me.

Also, if/when my PC freezes while on a web page and I do the ctrl+alt+del to bring up that window that will allow me to End Now, there is no menus there at all. Just a white box and a listing of what's running. There are no buttons or anything so that the only way I can even close that window is to right click on little green chart in next to the time at the bottom of the screen and tell it to close.

Another weird thing is that when I restart the computer, there is a set of little black outlined boxes in the lower right taskbar next to the time and I can only get them to go away by doing ctrl+alt+del. When I do say it makes a "funny" sliding beep sound is the only way I can think to describe it.

I have a feeling I've got a virus or spyware thing going on. And I certainly don't know how to get rid of it. Please let me know what more information you need to be able to help me with these issues.

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: missing menus/toolbars/options...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: missing menus/toolbars/options...

Try accessing User accounts from here:Start > Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts > Advanced. Also install an anti-virus program like ESET Smart Security or BitDefender to scan your system for viruses and remove them.

Hi guys!

I thought I'd seen the answer in here before, but am coming up empty when searching.

When Word97 is opened, in WIndows98se, it is a blank doc with no menus or toolbars at the top. I thought there was a F key that would hide the toolbars, but I struck out there. I renamed normal.dot, to no avail as well. I am sure this is much more simple than uninstalling/reinstalling.

Thanks a ton for the help,

help! again!I opened up my word proram yestereday and found that all my toolbars AND menus are gone from the page. The page does open and I can type in it but besides the horizontal and vertical rulers nothing else is displayed in the window. There is no "File" or "Tools" or anything to click on along the top. And all the various toolbar icons are gone! What has happened? and how can I get them back? I have tried going to Microsoft's website to download any updates and I also re-installed Office 2000 but neither has worked. Am I just missing something obvious?Any help would be appreciated. I have Windows 98, by the way, if that tells you anything.

Hey guys,

I restarted my PC because of a problem with a webpage, and when I tried to log back on my desktop icons were missing and so were my startup options that are normally on the toolbar. Also, some context menus are missing, all I get are "send to drive F, and E, not desktop or anything.

I restarted again, and now my wallpaper is gone, but some startup options seem to be back.

My icons/folders display when I go to C:/Users/<myname>/Desktop, but don't appear in the actual desktop.

There are probably other screwed up things too.

What's going on? Did I pick up a virus or something?

EDIT: "Set as Wallpaper" is broken also 0_O

Thanks,

Answer:Solved: Windows 7-Desktop Shortcuts, startup options, context menus missing

Huh, I seem to have solved it by restarting over and over again. WTF?

Still wondering why this would happen in the first place.

Solved for now at least.

issue:

customer reports that was installing a webcam driver and icons and context menus starting showing missing info or options, icons would not appear, or text boxes would appear incomplete, strange error messages would appear indicating failure, programs would not load and messages like: Taskmanager application "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d). Click on OK to terminate the application." or "rundll32.exe Not enough quota is available to process this command". "ole32.dll is not a valid windows image " "incomplete system resources exit to complete the requested service" Same with other programs. norton would appear at times as not installed correctly, at other times the same program would load while other would create a shortcut after a double click, some buttons would appear missing in start menu (ex. no turn-off button). some programs would execute at random intervals but not everytime that click or double click would be executed, menu bars would disppear after a few clicks or would show up at strange locations, folders would open at random times after several attemps to open them.

Either with Win7 or with the latest version of programs, the top window row (above the menu), the menu, the toolbars and other items are all blended together. This makes it harder to figure out where what starts, where to grab the window, drag sections, etc. Of course I can see it but you need to look more carefully than before. I have been using Win7 and the newest versions of many programs for a long time but I am still not used to this (I got used to the ribbon menu even if I don't like it too much). This approach seems a big step backwards. Does anybody feel the same? Maybe it's good Balmer is going out and hopefully with him a few others who came up with this new GUI that tries to hard to be slick like Apple (I am no apple fan boy) but fails miserably doing so... Just my 2 cents.

Answer:Toolbars, Menus, etc

Possibly some screen shots of the view would help (me anyway) see what your referring to,
The ribbon has a Quick access toolbar which if you right click it and click on show below ribbon it makes items easier to see and use.
Cheers.

Right clicking on the title bar gives no options to restore these.

Reseting folder options in control panel does not help.

I don't know what I've done, but Word is now opening in a manner that does not show Menus or Toobars ... so unless I happen to remember the keyboard code, I'm out of luck in trying to format & use these tools. I've uninstalled & reinstalled, to no avail. Any hints or direction would be appreciated!

Answer:Can't see Menus or Toolbars in Word

Try this.

Close Word.

Go to Start- Search - choose all files and folders.

And type in normal.dot. When search locates normal.dot rename it to anything, like normalold.dot.

Open word.

Hope it works!

To whom it may concern,

I was on the Internet late night (again) and after clicking a link a friend posted on facebook to another social website "formspring" a pop-up came up and I thought nothing of it, and would continuously "x" out of all of them. after a little while my security wall freaked out, but I continued to close out of it. After a little while of that, a larger pop-up came stating something was trying to get my passwords for various sites. so I shut my computer off.
This morning I turn on my computer and all I get is a black screen. No toolbars, icons, or anything ! It'll open Internet searching or things. My hot keys don't effect this, and I can't access any "my computer" type of programs. Help is appeticated.

Answer:Computer Black Screen; no menus, or toolbars.

You need to post in the security forum as your computer has been compromised. If it can be reversed, they will help you, otherwise you may have to reformat and install Windows. Read and follow these instructions, then post in this forum with the results of the tests and they will start helping you.

Here's my problem: something changed my internet explorer so there's a toolbar in the place of the address bar, with lots of links to different search topics, and it wont let me change any of the toolbars or the address bar. I looked through other people's suggestions and did a few things, and now the toolbars are gone, but I still cant change which toolbars I see, and I cant get my address bar back.At first I kept having something pop up in the bottom righthand corner that said my computer was infected with malware, and it told me to click on it to protect my computer (this icon looked like the windows update). i figured out it wasnt, it was something having to do with spyaxe, and I downloaded a program to remove that. but I still have the toolbar on my internet explorer and it wont let me change my toolbars, and it took away my address bar. it also directs me to different websites than the url that I type in or the link that I click on.I cleared temporary internet files and temp files.I ran spybot and ad-aware. Spybot found nothing and ad-aware keeps finding something that effects windows and restricts toolbars. I try and delete it but every time I scan it shows up again.I ran CWShredder, which removed a couple CWS things, that have not shown up since I removed them.I ran bitdefender and mcafee avert stinger. bitdefender deleted a few things.here's my hijack this log:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 5:19:30 PM, on 1/5/2006Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)... Question: Missing Toolbars

A friend has asked me to clean his Dell OptiPlex GX620 of Infections. It runs XP 32 bit and Internet Explorer 8. The first thing I noticed was there were no Toolbars Showing. There is the yellow star for Favorites but clicking it does nothing. I installed Malwarebytes, and it found and quarantined several pup's such as Babylon Toolbars and Yontoo Packerage. I also ran ADW Cleaner and that also found infections and were cleaned. The problem with the missing Toolbars still remain. The only bar is the Address pane. I have installed Firefox and Chrome and they both work well but he prefers Internet Explorer. I tried System Restore, as he said the toolbars were there recently and it only works in Safe Mode. Still no Toolbars. I uninstalled Internet Explorer 8. I noticed Its not meant for 32 bit pc's unfortunately IE 6 Still had the same problem. I installed Microsoft Fix It 50157 and it will not initialize. All Microsoft updates have been installed since I have had the PC in the last couple of days. Also he asked me to delete his Daughters Outlook Express account that has over 5000 Emails. I cannot find a way to sign out of the account, or delete it Each time I open Outlook the Emails appear. She no longer uses the account. Is there a way to delete it? Thanks for any help

Did you scan for all MALWARE in safemode?

Reason I ask is you have scanned while computer was fully booted and deleted malware
Then done a system restore?

Chances are you have probably reinfected the system with exactly the same malware you deleted the first time!?

All virus scans and Malware scans should be done in safemode in all honesty.
Then booted then rescanned

Use the following in-line scan to scan for malware in your system, "clean" your registry and generally "tune-up" your Windows XP installation.Windows One Care Free ScanGo to Windows Live Onecare Free Scan (using Windows Explorer only)It will say "Get a free PC safety scan"http://safety.live.com/site/en-us/default.htmMake sure you click "Full Service Scan" in the middle of the page and not the "Try It Now Free" on the right side.Allow it to download the Active X components.Choose "Complete Scan" in the window that opensClick "Next"Do not click on anything else that offers you a free trial or to sign up if you live in the US.Allow it to scan - it may take quite, maybe two hours or so depending on how big your hard drive is and how fragmented your registry and drive are.If you continue having problems after completing the above you might want to post a Hijack This Log in our Hijack This Logs and Analysis Forum.Hijack This Preparation Guidehttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/

I'm not seeing anything in this log that would account for the issue you've described. Did any of your previous steps reveal any malware? If so, can you list what they found?

If those scans came out 'clean', you may be better served in the Windows XP section of this forum.

Okay here goes. I'm running Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11 but when I double click the desktop icon, which has now gone missing by the way, or single click the Quick Launch toolbar IE7 icon, a 'pop up' type window opens i.e. no toolbars at all and it's the type of window that adverts pop up in, therefore depressing the ALT key is pointless.

If I continue clicking the IE7 icon a number of times more 'pop up' type windows open but eventually, around the 4th or 5th time, a proper window opens with all the tool bars but then I have to close the four or five 'pop up' windows that opened previously. Those pop up windows do open displaying my selected homepage but of course I can't do a thing because there are no toolbars.

I have tried deleting the ITBar7Layout value found at HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser as suggested in the Internet Explorer Web Development MSDN forum but it does not solve the problem.

It is driving me nuts so I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I normally do not use IE, but have to for work.

It is not a case of clicking the Alt button or F10 -- those don't work.

I tried uninstalling, updating, reinstalling IE11 -- no dice.

I cannot open additional tabs: Ctrl-T does not work.

Not sure what can be done at this point. I did a search, but all talk about clicking Alt or F10. I assume there is something in the registry, but not sure where to look.

I tried system restore, but do not have very many restore points, so I could not go back far enough.

Please see attached screen shot. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,
Try using Clean boot,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/179159-troubleshoot-application-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html
After using Start and typing msconfig
Go to the Startup section and take as many screen shots to get a complete listed,
Most will say only your security should start with windows,
Then go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide all Microsoft services,
Then take more screen shots,
Cheers.

I have a client computer running Windows XP, current on all updates, that suddenly lost all but two taskbar toolbars (see attached image).

Every user in the company is a "Power User", the problem only happens logged in as a limited user, when I log in as Administrator all of the toolbars are available. I've tried logging in as myself as a power user and got the same results so I know it's not a profile issue.

I've tried all of the fixes that looked like they might work from www.kellys-korner-xp.com, none worked. It seems to be a permissions issue. The group policy is administered through our server and I've forced a GPUPDATE on that machine as well, that didn't change anything either.

This is happening on 2 out of about 180 machines. Please help, I can't find any info on this.

Thanks!!!

I have a system with IE 11 that I can?t get any toolbars like Google or Norton to work.
I can go into Manage Add-Ons, enable a toolbar that is installed, no errors pop up. But they never appear in IE. They don?t show up in the Toolbars menu drop down either.

I?ve tried Restore Advanced Settings and a full Reset in Internet Options. I?ve even uninstalled IE 11, reverting back to 8 (had same issue), then reinstalling 11.
Has anyone ever seen this? Have a fix?

Answer:Internet Explorer missing all Toolbars

Fisrt, download ABIremover and save it to its own folder like c:\ABIremover

- Now extract the abiremover.exe file from the ZIP file into the folder you created but do not run the EXE yet.

- Reboot into Safe Mode with no network suppost and do not run anything else but what I tell you to run!

- Run the ABIRemover.exe, press install, wait (explorer window will disapear)

- When it finishes just reboot into normal mode and run the steps below.

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I cannot figure out how to access my toolbars in windows explorer.

I have installed an add-on toolbar (ImageRight), which is showing up fine in Internet Explorer, but is not available in Windows Explorer, in fact, no extra toolbars are available.  When I right click on the toolbar, it just gives me the option to lock the toolbar, but the list of other toolbars to choose from is missing.

Several others in my office have installed this just fine on their PC's (same operating system, etc).

I have attached screen shots, to show the IE toolbar and what it looks like, and how it doesn't exist on my Windows Explorer toolbar.

ImageRight is our paperless filing system.  The toolbar gives me one click capabilities to send files to our filing system.

Answer:Windows Explorer Toolbars Missing

When you were installing ImageRight, did you make sure to check the option for the Windows Explorer?  Sometimes programs have it as an option, but you must check mark it to install and enable it during the initial installation.

Help!
We had a short power outage and when one of the networked computers was restarted, the icons and taskbar were aol. The background is in tact but the screen area appears smaller.

We have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the Task Manager to access some programs.

Internet Explorer 5, Windows XP and Microsoft Outlook will not open from the Task Manager and we can't run them. The other two networked computers were not altered. We reinstalled Windows XP with no success.

I hope someone can help us!

i would seriously appreciate any help to re-enable my ability to visit the microsoft update page. When i attempt to do so, IE simply closes. As well, i have no toolbars on IE so cannot change any options whatsoever (though exclusively use Mozilla Firefox, using IE only for updates).

Also, i have found a file called "GPInstall.exe" in my windows directory and Net information suggests it is a virus, but seems basically inconclusive.
Here is my Hijackthis log.
As i said, any help would be seriously appreciated.

Was having a suspected virus problem, but scan using McAfee Security Center with latest updates was not picking up anything. McAfee was, however, blocking a buffer overflow everytime IE7 was started up. Also, no toolbar on IE. Tried using MS support fixes for missing toolbars (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962963) and removed ITbarlayout in suggested registry locations. Toolbars reappeared. Overflos continued.

Other Anomalies: May be unrelated, but ...
1. Excel: Weird issue with colorless/washed out Excel dialog boxes. Color is restored when file is opened in Excel Safe Mode. Ran Office Repair. No help. Other than washed out dialog boxes, Excel seems to be fine.
2. Outlook: When using Drag and Drop to add attachments to an OL email there is an occasional >30 sec hang while the file is being dropped. Sometimes the drop results in a corrupted file. Delete and drop again, works fast and files are intact. File size or type doesn't seem to matter.
3. Taskbar: Delaying action similar to OL problem occasionally occurs when expanding/contracting the Quick Launch area to expose or cover items in the Quick Launch area of the Taskbar. Basically freezes the Task Bar for >30 seconds then breaks loose and all is normal.

Ran combofix as recommended on one of the websites. Seems to have fixed the IE problem (no Buffer overflow), but didn't fix the other anomalies (which may be unrelated). ComboFix website recommends having an "Authorized Helper" (sound... Read more

I am trying to draw arrows in an e-mail. I'm using Outlook 2003 in Windows XP. It seems I only have access to about 4 toolbars, i.e., Standard, Advanced, etc. The drawing toolbar is not there.

Is it not available in Outlook 2003?

I've Googled for over an hour and just can't find any definitive answer.

Answer:Solved: Missing Toolbars in Outlook 2003

Welcome to the forum.

You are using Outlook as an email editor instead of Word. To change that go to "Tools">>"Options" from the menu bar and select the "Mail Format" tab. Within her check the checkbox that says "Use Microsoft Word to edit E-Mail messages." Some of the names might be different since I am not using 2003 anymore.

Hi MS Word word 2007 started to to do odd things so I searched for a way to set it back to default. Unfortunately I cant find the same search nor can I remember how I did it the thing I do remember is I added /a. to a string in word in a box. Not by typing winword.exe /a.The thing is my customised toolbars that I use disappear after closing down word and I have to reset them again, it seems as though it defaults to factory settings after adding the /a.

After installing and then uninstalling (because of BSOD) the fubar'd security patch from last week, I now can not get right click menus anywhere. Nothing happens when I RT click. I've googled and gotten many hit on single missing items but nothing on all missing items.

It seems my registry is broke, under.
HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex it contains "(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)" that's all

HKCR\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers "REG_SZ (value not set)"
\DesktopDockShellExt "REG_SZ (value not set)"

Then several apps have there menus add on listed all with data in them. It seems to me I'm missing some data points in these registry blocks. Dose anyone know what is supposed to be in there?

Answer:Missing / No Right Click Menus.

Hello Indie, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you able to expand (double click on) the HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects\shellex key to have the ContextMenuHandlers and PropertySheetHandlers subkeys under shellex?

As a test to see if your context menus may just be disabled instead, see if using step 1 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below may be able to help afterwards.

I am struggling to come to terms with both Windows 7 and IE9. Call me a ludite, but I still prefer XP.. Never mind. More importantly, I do miss the drop down menues that were a feature of previous versions - where, in particular can I now manage my toolbars, ensure everything is locked etc. And finally, is it possible to convert the 'Tools' button into a toolbar?

Answer:Using IE9 - missing drop down menus

You may find this article useful on IE9 features. Don't use it myself as I much prefer Firefox.
Stick with Windows 7 - it really is very good. Have a look at this article about toolbars.
If on the other hand you would prefer to have back some of the XP features, have a look at this article and the options it offers.

Hi all, I recently took delivery of a Yoga 2 13", and once I figured out how to get into the BIOS I took a look around and made some notes. Initially the menus were: Debug, Information, Configuration, Main, Advanced, Security, Power, Boot. At some point the contents of the BIOS changed and now Debug, Main, Advanced and Power no longer appear. Does anyone know what might have caused that, and how I can get them back? T.

I have a client with a strange OfficeXP problem which I have never seen before. any of the Office apps can be opened without any problems, but when you click on the menu bar only the shadow of the menu apears! This only happens in OfficeXP - there are no customising/tweaking utillities on the machine and all other apps work fine. Tried the usual repair, then uninstall/re-install of office.

Any ideas would be appreciated

I am having trouble sending mail and info on web seems to advise it is my SMTP settings. Problem is that I don`t seem to have the OUTGOING SERVERS pointer on the Accounts Settings or Options. I have Server Settings but that only allows me to choose default Server.

Has anyone else had this problem ? Is it likely to be the result of security settings or browser interference or something like that. I can`t see anything on the Mozilla advice pages about this.

Answer:Thunderbird missing menus

I can`t find the replies that were here yesterday, although I have emails of them in my gmail account.

I was asked to provide further information. Here it is

In Gandi I have a domain with 5 free email accounts. I have used 4 of these recently to set up new email addresses. Gandi only collects mail and forwards it to servers, not to email clients, as I understand it because it only deals with mail boxes. I set these up to use POP 3 as suggested by gandi.
I have set up gmail to collect mail with gandi addresses by adding the gandi accounts to

SEND MAIL FROM THESE ADDRESSES and to

CHECK MAIL FROM OTHER ACCOUNTS USING POP 3

on gmails Settings: accounts page.

On the gmail site, I have sent an email from the primary gandi address to my husband (who has a computer in the next room with separate email account with Yahoo). It arrived almost immediately . And I have sent and received one from his address to primary gandi address without a problem.

But if I write one in Thunderbird to my husband, it is rejected with An error occurred sending mai with following error mesagel:

The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: +OK Gpop ready for requests from 86.135.58.229 d6pf35627393eev.7.

So I think it must be the Thunderbird settings that are incorrect. As I said I cannot check the SMTP settings on Thunderbird because I cannot find the menu. It is not where it is supposed to be. When I go on to Account settings, I find the menu for using default server but nothing... Read more

On the bottom left of the Taskbar, there are two icons: one gives me the task view and is NOT a problem. I am very new to W10 so I'm not sure how the window icon is supposed to work. If I right click, I get a menu and I understand that. However, if I left click, nothing happens. I suspect I inadvertently changed a setting. I used to get, on the left side of the monitor, when I left clicked, a different menu and some apps that 'looked' like W8. Can someone help me get back to this point please? If I'm not being clear in my explanation, please tell me and I will try to clarify.

I have an HP Compaq 6200 SFF running 64-bit Windows 10 Pro that won't print to either of two HP printers I have tried.

I have tried an HP OfficeJet 3830 and an HP OfficeJet 4650 and get identical results with both.

I can, though, print to a Canon MP470 (so maybe the brand needs to be non HP-to-HP, ha, ha!).

In all cases, I am using a wired (USB) connection between PC and printer(s).

I have tried two different USB cables, and get the same results with both.

The printer shows up in Control Panel -> Printers and Devices.

I have tried removing and rediscovering the device from 'Printers and Devices' via right-click -> Remove. This has not fixed the problem.

I can scan ok (with either HP printer, and to a file on the PC), but in various apps (browsers, word processors, spreadsheets, MS Paint, etc), but in all cases there is no entry for either HP printer in the Print drop-down menu.

I have tried both: i. printing after allowing the printer to install via plug-and-play; and ii. installed HP's printer drivers. In both cases, the printers are missing from the drop down menus.

In 'Printers and Devices', if I right-click on either of the problematic printers and choose Troubleshoot, the result is 'Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem'.

In 'Printers and Devices', if I right-click on the problematic printer and choose Properties, then Hardware tab, Device Status is, "This device is working properly." There are three entries in the Hardware tab ... Read more

Hi JustSomeGuy. Welcome to the TenForums @JustSomeGuy

Normally HP products like you to install software and when they ask you connect device. Seems like a technicality but worth trying. I would uninstall devices, drivers and software and then retry.

Before doing this I would ensure I had a system image made with your tool or Macrium Reflect (free). Then if something goes wrong you can get back to where you were.

I have a windows 10 laptop that is missing the text on the background of icons / menus, but not all of them. Example would be right clicking in device manager and the options that popus up is all white and cant see the text. But if I go into safemode it works fine, no issues.

Things I have done:
Set a new theme, updated and reinstalled video card drivers, SFC scan and no errors. Reset video card settings for users.

Answer:Windows 10 missing Text on menus

First backup important on to atlas a 10gb USB or more, then download windows 10 64 bit is from get into pc then use rufus to put the image on a different USB drive. AT LEAST 20gigs. Then boot from the USB with the windows 10 on it, then go through the setup process. Afterthat, you can copy all of the data on the other usb. If this does not help, Contact Windows support.

Hey everyone I have a bit of a troubling problem. For some odd reason, my computer is not displaying red at all...except for the monitor menus. I have narrowed it down to some type of connection problem or a motherboard problem by eliminating possibilities. I tried a second monitor and still had issues. Any advice on how to proceed? Before the complete loss of red, it would flicker on and off for a while (2 days before). I tried cleaning out the inside of the case, restoring my computer to a month before, reinstalling the video card drivers, restoring all the monitor settings to the original ones, tweaking the actual video color settings. So, if any of you have any ideas how to go forward, it would help a lot. Thanks beforehand.

Greetings again, and Happy New Year! A few days ago something (or things) bad, found their way onto my Media Center Edition pc. These manifest via a screen with a bold security page telling me that I was possibly infected with viruses, worms, etc. Having had experiences with these screens before, I did not try to exit out, or click on the "close" button. I went to the task mgr 1st where I thought I could kill the screen, but found that the task mgr closed as soon as I opened it. This led me to believe that I did indeed have an infection of some sort, and since it had obviously made it past my antivirus program (avira), I made the decision to reinstall the OS, as this had happened before. My computer is an Empower Media Center brand and runs the Media center version of XP Pro. Once I began the install however, I began to have problems. I started getting messages saying that this file or that could not copy, so I made the decision to put Windows 7 on it instead. This is the RC version, and, having tried it on another computer and found it to be a welcome change to what I had found with Vista, I was more than eager to see how it would perform on this computer. The install went without a hitch - I did a clean install and 7 looked great. I decided to start personalizing it by changing the default theme. That's when I discovered that I have no context menus. I tried right clicking on files, folders, even on my browser, all to no avail. My context menus have simply disappea... Read more

I updated it last week and I`ve just noticed that the menu bar now only contains the Help Menu. The File, Edit, View etc have all disappeared. Even the Help menu lacks the former option to Check for updates.I downloaded the latest version from the website click here and reinstalled but no difference. It is Version 1 (Build 0026) dated 5 October. Anyone else have this problem?

I have just tried to burn a DVD from data that I extracted from a VCD (so I could create a nice menu and chapters etc for the beginning) However, it went through 2h 30m of converting the VCD data to be able to burn it to DVD and then failed when it came to burning the DVD.

It said that the burn process failed and saved an error log for me (attached) I checked before I started the burn that the disc wasn't written and it was totally blank, and it was.#

Perhaps it has something to do with my previous problem with nerovision I discovered this morning?

Thanks.

Previous Problem - Hi everyone

I recently installed Nero 7 Ultra version which works perfectly, Nero 7 is much better than the 5 I got with my computer a year ago.

Anyway, NeroVision (the DVD authoring program) has templates for the menu's of DVDs and SVCDs but the pre-stalled backgrounds and templates that come with the CD appear to not work. The files are in the Nero windows folder but the pictures (if you click on them) say "no preview available" like they're blank files or corrupt or something. I've tried a full reinstall of nero 7 ultra twice and it's not fixed the problem.

Unless my disc is broken? I don't really know what else could be the problem. Or perhaps I could just delete the template files and get them from somewhere else? Or install them over the top of the corrupt/empty files?

Thanks,

Danny.

Answer:Text in right click menus on taskbar missing

Hi, you may find the following of interest, if not of immediate help, but it may suggest something..
As it turns out, the data for the Jump List items isn’t in the registry at all, but in the user’s AppData. Specifically, in a collection of files in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations. There’s one file per application; I had a somewhat magical 42 files in mine. I noted that there is also a similar folder called %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations, with fewer files in it, and which I suspect contains a cache of Jump List items that have been added programmatically by each application (such as the ‘Play All Music’ command on Media Player’s Jump List.
The files in these folders don’t have particularly useful names, but if you open them in Notepad the contents will give you a clue as to what program each one belongs to (note: don’t edit the files directly). When I compared the folder on different machines it was clear the names are the same for each application.
The file for Explorer.exe was actually the first in the list for me, and is called 1b4dd67f29cb1962.automaticDestinations-ms. The solution was simple; delete the file. As soon as I had removed it, I was able to re-pin folders, the removed file was recreated, and my life was once again sane.

This is curious. I finally have the time to post an inquiry.

Back in December, I went to open my Windows Task Manager (a program had froze), and I noticed that the menu tabs at the top were missing. I don't know why or how this happened. Is there anyway to get them back?
I've included a screen shot (I hope that worked anyway) of how it displays now. Fortunately I figured out that by hitting the Esc key, the task manager window will close.

Thanks.

Hi, I've got a slightly odd issue.
I've recently built a new pc (hp dc7800) with XP and office 2007 - the problem I have is that after about 24 hours of use (well left on over night) i wont be able to get any context menus or see the performance tab in the task maniger if it loads at all.
Closing a window usualy lets it work for a short period before it happens again.

The pc is a E6550 with 2gb of ram which should be more than enough memory.

Cheers

Hi Team,

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me with this quirky issue because I have had Windows 7, and 10 machines in the past, yet for this particular machine, I am missing the "Toolbars" option within Windows Taskbar.

The attached picture basically explains the issue quite well, as you can see, I do not have another link to the Toolbars link.

I have scoured Youtube, and Google, and cannot find a way to get this back at all. CTRL+R for "%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" showcases the folder but I am missing this link. I cannot find an option to enable this either.

Can someone please help? Thank you.

Hi
Thanks everyone for the ad. I have a previously stable quad core Asus MB PC which since the most recent Aniversary updates has become almost unusable. Right click menus only display the shadow line and are otherwise invisible. Moving the mouse over them leaves a pointer trail resembling a PaintshopPro paint tube. Hovering over the top right close box sometimes restores the text but this can take up to a minute. Folders in tree menus in Explorer or Outlook don't highlight so one can't be sure if they are selected and even desktop icons are affected, moving one doesn't appear to work but after a [long delay the icon will jump to it's new position. I'm assuming the updates were the culprit as I have reverted to a month old image which doesn't seem affected, however the updates reinstall and it becomes unusable. At the moment I'm using the old image on wifi with metered chosen to hopefully block the automatic updates. I tend to use the Microsoft onscreen keyboard for banking etc and that displays as an empty pane with just a shadow indicating its size. The PC is an H81-M Plus with a Haswell quad processor, 16g DDR3 and a Samsung SSD C: drive. I did use the Asus windows EZ updater on the Bios a few days earlier [rather than direct USB] but it seemed to go ok. I even put in a GT730 video card [1G] in case the onboard video I'd been using wasn't compatible [no drivers since 2015] but that didn't help. Normally, when I open My Computer and any folder within Windows XP Explorer, there is on the left side of the folder a series of menus, including Create New Folder, Rename Folder, plus towards the bottom left a place where photos are previewed (a preview panel). Well, suddenly, during some of my tweaks, this left side of the folders is missing! The folder simply has a list of the folders. I have looked in the Tools section but cannot find how to restore this left blue panel with all the shortcuts and info.

I have attached a screenshot that shows what I am referring to.

Please, someone, can you help me! This is a most useful tool that is now missing!

I just downloaded Windows 10 and am having issues with: missing pop-up menus; "Edge" & "Store" apps don't run (open with plain blue screens); I can't access Settings (same problem--I get only a plain blue screen); also Word 7 is buggy (i.e. the minimize button is missing when I have a doc open). From reading other threads here, I decided I should run a System File Check in Windows, but when I right click on the Start button (well...where I assume the start button is--all I have is a black square in the lower right corner!) all I get is a tall rectangle box with an arrow, and no text, no menu choices. When I click on the arrow, I get another tall box with no options.
I have an HP Touchsmart desktop (would like to give more specifics, but the "my computer" file is gone and I don't know where to find that info in 10 yet). I use Firefox...is that the problem? I'd sure appreciate any ideas of where I should go from here. Thank you!

Next window will tell you what you have.
Please post those info.
Thank you.
Meanwhile, do a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repair if any found.
Assuming right click at Start button still works ?
Right click at Start button > select either Powershell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) >
at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.....
sfc /scannow
> Enter.
It will take some time. Just wait.
When finished, it will give you one of the following 3 reports:
1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupt files and repaired successfully.
3. Found corrupt files but unable to repair some of them.
Please post back the result.

I have 2 Dell 780's that I would like to reset to factory using the Dell Recovery partition.  These are Windows 7 64bit Pro machines.  The units have 3 partitions, diagnostics, recovery and OS.  I have followed instructions to start the recovery process and can successfully get the units to boot to the standard windows restore options page, but the expected last item "Dell Factory..." is not present.www.dell.com/.../how-to-restore-your-windows-7-computer-to-factory-settingsI do not see Dell Backup and Recovery installed.www.dell.com/.../DriversDetailsThere is nothing on the C:\ partition I wish to retain and want to do a clean (re)install, ideally on a formatted drive.  I would like to keep the recovery partition functionality intact so this can be done again.  I rather not do an upgrade where I get left with a windows.old folder and other unused folders in the root directory.Related:1 - I think I read somewhere that recovery can only be done once.  Is this correct?2 - Does recovery also include the Cyberlink software?3 - From where is the System Recovery tools run? Also have seen this:  en.community.dell.com/.../20141229

Hello everyone,

I'm kind of freaking out right now. I turned my computer off about 12 hours ago, and now that I turned it on again it took much longer than usual for it to prepare the desktop. When I got in, there are about 50 % of my desktop icons missing, the programs I had attached to the taskbar were missing, I opened chrome and all my bookmarks and other info were gone, most of my folders are empty (for example downloads folder contains nothing), my desktops wallpaper had changed to the default HP one, there are programs missing from the startup menu... I don't even know what other damage has been done yet. The only thing I can recall doing yesterday that could have caused this was downloading Red Alarm, but I'd love to know what is going on and how I can fix this.

Thanks for your time,
Sebruz

Answer:Tons of files missing, desktop reset, browsers and toolbars reset...

Some additional information:
I just found some of the missing files and folders from another location, but it seems like pretty much all software has reset somehow. Google Chrome's options, history, bookmarks etc are all gone, skype thought it was my first time using it and all the files my friend's have sent me at some point were re-sent. I even checked the trash bin, and I have no idea how but there are actually items there that I've emptied from the trash bin long ago.
