Question: persistent malware, antivirus/antimalware tools don't work, internet doesn't work, multiple iexplore popups, won't...

I'm having difficulty figuring out this persistent malware. I think it's likely that there are multiple issues.

I'm running Windows Vista.

The malware started off with "google redirect" symptoms, and disabling my Symantec software

Shortly following, I could no longer access the web. However, the malware itself would create an internet explorer popup every 5-10 minutes (not my default browser) that would go to "search sites" (none that I recognized....) and search for lewd topics. Running the taskmanager would show multiple instances of iexplore.exe running on my machine (one for each popup). The popups would have to be eliminated one by one using the task manager.

Trying to run a system restore, I discovered all restore points had been deleted.

I installed AVG antivirus and got it to run once which seemed to help the problem. However, upon restart, all issues were back and I could no longer run avg. Windows defender constantly pops up that a new trojan is attacking my machine.

At this point, I unplugged my internet connection and started using another machine. I had left my problematic computer alone for about a month.

Upon turning it on last night, each time I logged on, it gave me a warning that "Windows had encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute" and would restart. I tried running cmd (in that one minute) to intercept it, but the task manager would freeze if I tried to run it from there and explorer would freeze if I tried to run it from there. I also discovered my Guest account is not working.

I restarted in Safe Mode and ran msconfig and disabled all non-Microsoft services. Upon restarting my computer, I found I could successfully log on (although Guest account is still not working).

At this point I figured I ought to post a highjackthis log to a forum.

My computer would not let me install using HJTinstall.exe so I renamed it to HJTinstall.scr. After installation, highjackthis ran for about 1second and closed abruptly. My machine will not run highjackthis nor will it let me rename it. If I try to run it, it says that it cannot access the file, device or path and perhaps I don't have permission, and if I try to rename it, it says that I need permission to do so and asks if I'd like to try again. Right clicking does absolutely nothing. This is all the same in safe mode, although right clicking in safe mode will at least bring up the options.

I'm out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: persistent malware, antivirus/antimalware tools don't work, internet doesn't work, multiple iexplore popups, won't...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A few days ago the three windows running laptops in my apt randomly lost internet connection. The network would display as full strength connection but no pages would load in IE or FF. However, the one macbook was still working (although sluggish) After trying to futz with the IP settings on each of the laptops, I gave up and reset the router hoping everything would go back to normal.

Well, now nothing works. All four machines still show full strength connection but nothing will load and no IM clients will connect. So, I tried to hardwire the connection to one of the computers straight from the modem and again, same issue. It shows a full connection, packets being sent and received, but no actually connection whatsoever.

Of course my ISP sees the modem connected and claims it can't be their problem so I'm left to fix this on my own.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at my wit's end on this one.

Answer:Multiple laptops show connectivity but internet doesn't work

For a PC connected directly to the modem (remember to power cycle it) please show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following commands:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

PING 69.147.114.224

PING YAHOO.COM
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi,

My computer was infected by Antivirus Pro today. I downloaded Malawarebytes' Anti-Malaware, which seemingly solved the problem, but my computer still seems to be infected with malware. When I type something into the Google search box on Mozilla, I am redirected to pages such as "Shopica" or "lowpriceshopper." If I click back and search for the same term again, the appropriate website will come up after the second try.

I have downloaded numerous free malware programs, and they all seem to run for long periods and then get stuck.

1) Malaware Anti-malaware-scans and then (Not responding)-->gets stuck at C:\Windows\system32\config\Default.LOG1

2) Superantispyware-gets stuck in the scanning process at C:\Windows\system32\config\RegBack

3) Spybot search and destroy-"coolwwwsearch.bootconf, couponbar, Mediaplex, and Win32.TDSS.rtk" come up, but it says that "This action may not be performed since you are not an administrator. If you want this performed for all users, please elevate this as an administrator."

4) Advanced system care-did not detect anything!!!

5) AVG anti-virus-scans for hours and never seems to end

Please help!

I can post a hijack this log if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I am running Windows XP on a laptop, and I recently ran into some spyware/adware called MicroAV that installed itself onto my comp. and flooded me with false security messages. To get rid of it, I downloaded windows live onecare and ran a scan. It found some viruses and deleted them, and for a few hours everything was fine. Then, internet explorer couldn't connect to the internet. Firefox still worked though, so I ignored it and used Firefox. After waking up the next morning, however, I couldn't connect at all. I am connected to my wireless network and I can log into my router to change settings but the internet wont work. I tried three browsers and Itunes music store and none will work, however Limewire will connect. I can't ping any sites or do anything other than Frostwire though. Its not a problem with my router as my Ubuntu OS on the same comp works fine on the same network.

PS: I also uninstalled OneCare so its not the firewall or antivirus.

I'm typing this up on my better working computer, because I'm having issues with IE 7 and Firefox in my Windows XP Media Center Edition.

This started with my Outlook Express crashing everytime I opened an attachment, so I randomly downloaded and ran CCleaner, which sort of fixed the problem.

But then i noticed that the pages on IE would never work properly. Each time I clicked on a link, it would open it in a new window. the AVG website wouldn't work, even though it connected from my other laptop (thru a wireless connection). Some pages I tried going to check on this problem wouldn't open, and IE would say there was a problem opening the page. So i downloaded Firefox and it kind of did the same thing.

With firefox I noticed that it opened a new tab and i saw something in the url called www.windowsclick.com....... and a really long url following.

So I'm pretty sure it's some kind of trojan that my AVG (8, which was REALLY buggy) couldn't see. And I tried using Avira and Spyware Terminator (which I had to download on another computer and bring it to usin my usb key.

My comp is
Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-58
120 GB HDD
1.5 GB RAM
Windows XP Media Center Edition

Also there was this weird issue with it not recognizing my USB Keys for awhile, so that was kind of scary, but it seems to have been fixed.AND I can't get rid of AVG 8 for some reason.... but that could be for another day.

I seem to be having problems similar to a few people on here and elsewhere.Google search redirects me to various other links (through Classy Search Server usually) when I click on searched links through its website or toolbar.Antimalware (Malwarebytes) and Antivirus (AVG) don't work or begin to start and after a few seconds disappear.I tried TDSSkiller which found a couple of infected files and then went to cure them and after a reboot found one or two more and after a reboot again one or more again in different registry files, so I think that perhaps isn't working properly or is infected too? Or perhaps I keep getting new poisoned stuff whenever I log in?Sometimes when I open programmes a windows warning box appears saying some parts of the programme are blocked, would I like to unblock?, which seems a bit suspicious to me and the programme seems to work ok when I just close the box. These warnings haven't appeared before is all and why I thought it was worth mentioning....I have done the preparation outlined for such matters on your website, and have an issue with the DDS programme, because it thinks it's an AutoCAD script file not a screen saver and I get gobbledegook instead of prose etc... Hi everybody

I hope you can help me. Before a few weeks I received my Toshiba Qosmio G10 back from the support, because the notebook didn't work anymore. So I get it back with a new Grafic card and a new PCB. With my Notebook I get a CD which is called update Tool CD-Rom and an instruction sheet, where it says that you have to boot with this update Tool CD-Rom after you had installed the Windows with the reovery CD.

So I made it, but when I know put the update Tool CD-Rom in and I boot with it, the computer installs something but after a short while there comes a message that it is a different model and that I have to put a button to shut down the Notebook. So i made it but the Windows doesn't start.

Why is that so? I had everything done which was said on the instruction sheet.

Please help me

Hello MG?s,
I have a problem of new processes and multiple iexplore.exe processes. Also wmpnscfg.exe showed up just recently and is disabled in services and it?s still running; and winlogon.exe (Windows Logon Application) won?t end process through task manager.I have run scans and they found a few things but did not fix the problems (this has been going on for over a week and I have not been able to resolve it). Browsing is slower than usual. F-Secure online scan found a backdoor Trojan. My recent scans are reporting as nothing found however I was not able to run combofix because I received the error message that it conflicts with AVG Internet Security (paid version) and I don?t want to uninstall it because it is also my firewall. Is there another program I could use like Avenger or what should I do? Also, when one tab of IE8 is open it shows two processes in task manager (one high cpu usage and one low), and if I end process of one it will close IE but if I end process on the other nothing happens. If I have two tabs open (therefore 3 iexplore.exe running in TM) and end process, then one tab will start to close but open back up over and over. I Reset IE thinking it might help but it did not. I read that the winlogon.exe windows Logon Application is malware, but my programs are no longer finding malware though it won?t stop in TM. I?ve attached the logs and I included Panda activescan. Root Repeal ran for 4 hours and never finished so I stopped it thinking it s... Read more

Answer:Somethings taken over my IE8 - multiple iexplore.exe, winlogon.exe persistent

Winlogon.exe is a needed windows process. Remove it and your computer is a brick. It is not unusual for IE to have multiple processes running.

You still need to attach the C:\MGLogs.zip from running the C:\MGTools.exe.

wmpnscfg.exe is a process associated with Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service Configuration Application from Microsoft Corp.. It is used to share Windows Media Player libraries.

After being infected with "Antimalware Doctor", Java 6 started opening up and going crazy; I could not update Windows Defender, or access the task manager with CTRL+ALT+DEL. I tried many things to correct it, ending with an OS repair using the Vista Home Premium DVD. This seemingly fixed the issue, but now I have multiple instances of iexplore.exe opening in the background, accompanied by pop-up ads every 20 minutes. The "Antimalware Doctor" pop-ups no longer occur, however, and I can access the task manager again.A scan with SpyBot S&D yielded a few adware fixes, none of which solved the problem. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Windows Defender, and Microsoft Security Essentials detect no problems.I have the DDS logs as per forum request, but GMER crashes to BSoD every time I scan. Trying to start the OS in Safe Mode also yields a BSoD every time, always crashing when Windows is loading "crcdisk.sys". About ready to pull my hair out! I would really appreciate some help figuring this out...

I've run many anti-malware cleanups using 6 of the better softwares out there.

None of them has been able to eliminate this noxious iexplore.exe process.
It makes random clicking noises, random audio popups and also both
full-screen and smaller popups. Always re-starts very quickly when I
kill the processes.

I've run HijackThis and done my best to locate any dubious processes but at
this point I'm stuck. I think this Malware is attached to some legit process
or something that keeps re-starting it.

Here's the log:

Hi,

I'm trying to make an arsenal of the best antivirus, antispyware, antimalware, and registry cleaner tools. (Also is there such a thing as anti-hijacker tools?--or does this fall under antimalware usually?)
Please fill me in on the top free and paid software for each of these categories.

Currently the list of tools I have is: Avast, Malware Bytes, Spybot S&D, TDSSKiller, ComboFix, and Advanced SystemCare Free.

Thanks,
-Jshine

ESET or Kaspersky.Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons: Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what cons... Read more

Hi,

I am really new to Microsoft Access and have tried to get a multiple IIf statement to work in a Form but it doesn't. What I want it to do is:

If Qualifying Car is true and sale price is 20% VAT then *11/66. If qualifying car is true and sale price is 17.5% VAT then *7/47. If qualifying car is false and sale price is 20% then profit *11/66. If qualifying car is false and sale price is 17.5% then profit *7/47. If profit is less than zero then render zero.

I wrote this...

=IIf([Qualifying Car]=True And [Selling VAT rate]="20",[Sale Price]*11/66,IIf([Qualifying Car]=True And [Selling VAT rate]="17.5",[Sale Price]*7/47,IIf([Qualifying Car]=False And [Selling VAT rate]="20",[Profit]*11/66,IIf([Qualifying Car]=False And [Selling VAT rate]="17.5",[Profit]*7/47))))

It doesn't work and nor do I know how to get it to show zero if the Profit is less than zero.

I have now spent days and days trying to make it happen but I just can't.

If anyone can help then I would be truly grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Sarah

IE has been acting slow and has a popups.. I can open google but any site after that I get redirected to has an ad geared directly to whatever I was just searching.. Firefox is usable but I sometiimes get popups.. I usually use google chrome but recently it has slowed down and frozen on screens and the tab never finishes loading..Also a yellow "!" triangle appears on my lower right side bar.. It tells me I have infections on my computer. I dont trust it however because sometimes multiple will appear in the corner at the same time. Also the picture doesnt look official to me since its distorted and blurry..Whenever I run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware it gives me a list of my infections, I go through the normal procedure of deleting them, then it tells me to restart for the changes to take effect, and then I click yes and the computer restarts. However on startup when I rerun the program I still have infections on the computer.I see the "blue screen of death" much more frequently now (im not sure if this is applicable).. just in the past 24 hours its happened at least 15 times..Thanks for your help! My parents got a new Windows 8 computer recently. They asked me to help them with a problem - the internet was slow and now IE stopped working. No pages load.

In Firefox you see a DJ Mixi toolbar and popups everywhere. Windows defender is turned off. I don't see any antivirus software on the computer.

I'm hoping for some help to cure the infection and put some basic security in place for Windows 8 (never used it before) so they don't have problems in the future. I was going to run an online scan but I know how tricky trojans and viruses are today, sometimes that is not enough and can make the problem harder to solve.

Hello. I have Windows xp Intel. Since a family member and friend used my computer, my home page when clicking on internet explorer was changed. I have tried to change it back, but unable too.

It maybe coincidental this happened "after" someone used my computer.

However, now since when i click on tools and internet options, the later does NOT respond. Also another route I use to take was via "start" control panel, internet connections, and all those links work as nomal. But the last link via this route to "change internet connections" etc does NOT work either. I hope I have exlained good enough my problem and NOT said to much. Would appreciate help with this problem.

Best wishes. Ifor Love[/SIZE]

Answer:Internet options in tools does NOT work

It sounds like you POSSIBLY have some sort of malware in your machine. I suggest as a first step to click on the red triangle in the upper right hand corner or the dialogue box and ask a moderator to move your thread to the malware section.

One of the malware guru's will ask you to download and run HighJack This and then post a log. Let one of the malware guru's examine the log and see if you have malware problems.

Hellow,

A few months ago I purchased Noton AntiVirus and installed it on my PC. Everything worked fine without any problems. A week ago I formatted my pc and reinstalled Norton, everything worked fine again. Yesterday however I had to remove the program again and reinstall it. But: now the LiveUpdate doesn't work anymore. I don't know why, I did the installation exactly the way I had done it before. I tried to download the updates from Symantic-website, but most of the links of that website I can't connect with (The page cannot be displayed), so I also cannot connect with the download-page. The rest of the internetwebsites do work, so I don't think it has got anything to do with my internetconnection.
Can anyone help me?

Hi all.

To delete a number of items at once in My Documents or in My Pictures, I hold down the Ctrl key while clicking a few items - and then I click 'Delete'.

But half the time I do this, instead of deleting the items - it makes another copy of them.

Is there any way of correcting this problem? It would now take me a full half hour to individually delete each file.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Multiple Deleting Of Files Doesn't Work.

That's not a problem, it's a common mistake I make when trying to move/delete numbers of files.

More precise keystrokes will fix .

My boss' personal laptop has a problem, and I believe it's caused by something called "AV2009". I uninstalled it (or so it appears), but the problem remains. Search results in both msn.com and google.com appear valid, but clicking on anything takes me to a totally unrelated website. Manually typing anything into the IE address bar results in a "website not found" error. So essentially, there is no internet connectivity except for websites this hijack allows me to go to. I copied Malwarebytes onto the laptop using a USB stick, but double-clicking the install file does absolutely nothing.

Where do I start with this???

Answer:AV2009 infection, no internet, no tools work

Try renaming Mbam.exe to somethingelse.exe ans see if it will run

Do those internet tools (listed on this site) that optimize your PC's performance and speed up your internet activities really work?

Answer:Do Internet tools for speeding up downloads really work?

sorta do, sorta don't.

internet optimizers do optimize your registry settings for your internet connection, but you really aren't going to notice anything in real-world usage.

however, if you are talking about download managers that are supposed to speed up single-file downloads, then that's also a 50/50 proposition. Most of the time you won't notice a difference, but there are times where you'll find a file that is going very slow and when you use a download manager, it will find a way to get more connections to that file and mirror(s) (if it has them) and thus get you a faster download on that one file.

I have a Windows XP SP3 PC from a user who was infected with malware, I used Malware Bytes to remove the offending software, and now I am unable to open the Windows Update page. I can browse to other pages but after a few minutes, I get redirected to another random page. I also keep seeing the Just In Time debugger. Tried a Registry edit I found recommended elsewhere, to fix that issue, but that didn't last. At this point, neither SAS nor MBAM see any malware present, but I am stuck with my problem. Existing antimalware package is MS Forefront. All utilities I have used have been updated to the most recent definitions.

I had Antivirus 8 spyware load on my laptop the other day. Immediately I checked Bleeping Computer from another laptop and followed the instructions for downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, having to download it onto this other laptop and transfer it across to my computer via a memory stick. I changed the filenames as instructed and ran the full scan which identified around 9 items which needed removing and removed them.

Now I can't seem to use Flashplayer. I tried to run a Facebook application and it said, "Page should load after 10 seconds. If not, you may need to upgrade your version of Flashplayer." So I clicked on the link and downloaded the newest version (10.1, I think). However, this does not seem to have worked. I have tried to do this again several times, going onto Adobe's site itself to try and download it, and although it goes through what seems to be a proper download process, it doesn't seem to be saving itself to the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do?

Answer:Antivirus 8 removal, now Flash doesn't work and won't load

Try the following: Adobe Flash Uninstaller then try and reinstall Flash Player.

Hi there,

I've had a few viruses, spyware, etc and after running Spybot, ad-aware 6, ewido and NAV 2006 looks like I got rid of them. After that, I cleaned as much as I could with the Ace Utilities.
The only problem I have is that the Norton Antivirus 2006 now doesn't start when the computer starts.
If I click on "Nmain.exe" doen't work either, but If I run it through the start-up icon it works fine.

Could anyone see my log and tell me please if there is anything wrong???

Your help will be very very appreciated !!!

Thank you very much.

This is awful. I noticed my PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Antivirus had stopped working. I found that Spybot tried to scan and then just disappeared from the screen - unable to start up again. Similarly with Immunet I installed. Using Google Updater I discovered that the google updater service wasn't started. I tried to manually start it but got an error "Error 1053"

I tried Windows Defender and it came up with a serious threat and called it Trojan:windows32 sirefef.B or something similar. It failed to remove it and now doesn't even pick it up.

Any search [using Chrome] to find out about it made my browser redirect to Stopzilla site. And then after a while an odd looking 'survey' about Google. Luckily I was able to use Maxthon browser to visit the actual sites behind the genuine links.

I have now tried to follow the instructions on this site about 'before you post'...

1. HijackThis. I managed to install it and run it but there was an hiccough and it disappeared! - I have no idea why and I cannot get it back and it didn't write anything to a log file. I even tried to re-install HJT but it wouldn't run. When I click on HijackThis.exe now I get the error 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". [I am running this computer as a administrator.]

2. Downloaded DDS successfully and got that to produce the appropriate files - Attach.zip is... Read more

My computer got a nasty little bug on it.

I believe it was one of those fake antivirus trojans. I had one before and Malware Bytes took it right off, but it couldn't do it this time. The malware keeps reloading on the system regardless of what I use.

I've used PC Tools Spyware Doctor (which I paid for and it has done nothing of note); Spybot and MBAM. The program keeps redirecting my browser to google-redirect.com or something like that and giving me tons of ads.

This is the log that I got after the most recent MBAM attempt.

I've removed and rebooted, with this and spybot, but the result is the same each time.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello!

So I managed to spill a cup of tea earlier today, spilling tea over my desk, hitting a few keys of my keyboard - a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2012 edition.
Most of the keys on the keyboard didn't work, or needed to be hit several times before anything happened.
I have restarted the PC, changed USB port and even changed keyboard to some old Logitech one, but most keys still doesn't work.

Since the keys aren't working on either one of the keyboards I tried I have no clue what could have happened, and need some help figuring this one out.

All help appreciated!

Answer:Keyboard keys doesn't work on multiple keyboards after spilling tea!

Could be the damage to the first keyboard damaged the PS/2 port or the USB port it was plugged into which in turn causes a replacement keyboard to not be full functional. Best thing I've done with spills is to immediately unplug the keyboard and turn it over to drain as much liquid out as I could then I've rinsed it out with clear water, shook and tapped it to get any water out then put in the sun to dry for several hours.

Hello, My laptop is HP Pavillion DV6875se with Windows 7 OS. It was working great before a month, but all of a sudden the following issues came up1. The power button of the laptop doesn't turn on/off the laptop. I have to use a detachable remote to turn the laptop on. I don't see blue light on the power key, once the remote turns the laptop on.2. The quick play touch sensative keys above the laptop key board have blue light in most of them. But its flickering red for volume, and no indicator on the volume increase decrease touch region. Though some have blue indicator, red lights....none of the touch sensative keys function at present.3. The laptop touch pad is unresponsive. It has its blue light, which doesn't turn red even if the touch pad is locked. I use a USB mouse as of now.4. Laptop has 3 audio jacks. One for microphone, and 2 for headphone. The external speaker doesnt have any sound, so i have to plug in earphone everytime to listen anything. In control panel --> under sound --> playback ---> i see speakers and realtek digital output ---> both show green oscillating bars when an audio is played. But the volume key in quick play tab is flickering red all the time. The laptop is fully functional. But it would be great if the problems mentioned above gets fixed. Sincerely

Hi, none of the browsers I have installed right now work properly (Avant, Mozilla, IE 7, I had IE 8 but uninstalled it).

I also uninstalled Mozilla.

Avant does not allow downloading. IE has not Tools bar, no downloading, no right clicking.. All it has is an address line, stop and refresh.

Please help me I don't know what to do. I tried deleting all the programs that looked suspicious and have already run ComboFix (but I don't know what to do with it next)

I cannot paste my dds because paste doesn't work either, so I attached all files I think are relevant.

Hi,

My husband did some cleaning after our computer had a malware infection. That's fixed, but now when I go to my netflix page and mouseover the movies, I no longer get the information pop up. I'm using XP and Firefox, we do have the noscript plugin, but I allowed all scripts for netflix. Anyone have an idea how to resolve this problem and get my (useful) pop ups back? The popups on netflix work fine using Firefox on my husbands login, but not mine!?

Thanks, Kitty

Or which antivirus I could install beside Emsisoft Anti-Malware to improve protection on my machine?

I originally noticed two problems today: 1) My iTunes program would not open, and 2) AVG was turned off, as was Windows Defender out of date - respectively, I couldn't get either to turn on or update. I started off trying to install Malwarebytes, it installed, but once clicked, would not open to run. I tried running the Chameleon tool, it would freeze up at "1800 second timeout" prompt. I tried to install Kaspersky; it froze at 5 seconds on installation completion. I then went into safe mode with networking and attempted to run Kaspersky TDSSKiller, it scanned for 27 minutes without getting past zero objects. It has now been "stopping scan" for an additional 10 minutes and had to go kill the process in Task Manager to close it. I am now currently scanning with FRST as per preparation instructions, but it appears to be frozen at scanning restore points. I am not sure if I will successfully produce any of the required log files. I have never encountered anything like this and have no idea what happened. It seems like everything I try is somehow blocked.

Just a curios person trying to build my own antivirus and I currently use Avast! I was wondering how those MD5 antivirus's (or avast!) detect malware. I know of Violasoft which is pretty crappy but I just want to create one as a experiment. I found a open source project on YouTube but the code doesn't make any sense to me. I've been programming in vb since I was 8 or 9 and would really like to advance. Should I find another easier project to do or can someone try to tell me not how to code them but just..how they work. Thanks ~ Flames

Answer:How does avast! Antivirus work and detect malware?

Well, first it installs it on your system, and then it finds it and prompts you.

JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING

Hang tight. Someone surely knows.

Hello,I'm using Windows 7 on a T500, and I have encountered some strange problems, which seem sort of related: 1. Windows update installation ends with error code 80070670 Windows Update_dt000 2. My Bluetooth mouse (Logitech V470) required driver installation, but the process ended in failure; 3. I tried to use Lenovo System Update, but the process took much longer than usual, and didn't finish My internet works normally. I scanned the computer for viruses, and there were none. I tried an earlier system restore point, and it didn't make a difference. Does anybody have a suggestion what could be wrong?Regards, bostjanv

I am trying to use my CD-ROM drive and it doesn't work here are the list of things I have tried

Uninstalled and reinstalled the cd-rom driver it is a Matbleepa UJ-840D CD-ROM/DVD/CD-RW in my HP laptop (Didn't work)

Read stuff about code 39 and removed in the registry edit screen Upperfilters, Upperfilters.bak, Lowerfilters, Lowerfilters.bak and rebooted (Didn't work)

Removed itunes from computer (didn't solve the issue with cd-rom player)

Went back to a system restore point that was before the last time I used the CD-rom player and it worked and that (didn't work as well)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys, the answer to the question is probably yes, but i want to be sure. I'm running windows 7 64 bit sp1, and this is what happened (there will be some missing information, but pc stopped working in middle of night and I was a little in panic, so I may have forgot something.) Note: My OS is in Italian, so the system messagges are not exactly the same of an english version because I'm traslating them.

The short version is: Realtime protection of antivirus doesn't works (tried both with avast and then avira, reinstalling/cleaning doesn't works), windows update doesn't work, and microsoft fixit can't fix it :D. I don't know if there is a problem with admin rights or something like this (the first error i got was from dropbox that couldn't obtain admin rights) or it is a malware.

The long (watch out, is a wall of text) version with everything i tried until now is here:

Step 1: programs stopped working, just after I installed mass effect 3 from origin, but this could be unrelated, I wasn't using pc because i was waiting for ME3 to finish the download. I remember that i couldn't launch firefox anymore, pc started to go very slow, task manager didn't start and windows updates message popped up, and another strange thing, i couldn't use the keybord combination using "alt gr" (on the italian keyboard the @ must be done with the alt gr). So i rebooted the system. Note: I have windows update set to manual (I have to chose what do download, so when the m... Read more

If I try to use the Ctrl-Click action on web pages that allow you to select multiple items in a list box, a new ie session opens (to my home page) instead of allowing me to make multiple selections. This happens with ALL web pages that have multiple select boxes. It only happens on my desktop (XP with i.e 7), and not on other computers in my house with ie7.
- I tried disabling ALL active X controls and add-ins. Still didn't work.
Any ideas please? (It's maddening!!)

Answer:Control-Click doesn't work with multiple select lists-it opens a new ie page instead

One thing you may want to check is the control panel/accessibility options and make sure nothing is checked in there. Sometimes the accessibility settings for the keyboard will play havoc with what you think should be happening with keys.

I have tried the Anti malware on this site and it won't start. I am using another computer because I cannot even go to sites that have anything to do with virus removal on the infected computer. My norton and spysweeper have been disabled also. This seems really complex and nasty. I even get redirected to random web sites when I try to go to some of my favorite web sites. Not all but some.

I have downloaded the files requested on the "do this first" to my usb drive and started it from the USB on the infected computer and also saved them to the HD but none will run. I get a breif hourglass and then nothing. I have no hair left. HELP!

Answer:Malware removal wont work for Antivirus 2009

Hi pepsirich,Are you still waiting for help? If so, try the following: (If anything doesn't work, simply make a note of it and continue on.)If you have Spybot S&D installed, be sure that TeaTimer is deactivated before you begin. To do this, open the program, click on mode at the top and select Advanced Mode. Then on the left hand side at the bottom, expand tools and click on the read and white Resident shield. In the middle of the page you'll see entries for SDHelper and TeaTimer. Be sure that TeaTimer is not checked.Next download and install CCleaner. Once installed see if you can run it in normal mode. If not, please try running it in safe mode.To run CCleaner, open the program and click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. Confirm that you want to delete the files and allow it to finish. When it's done, the Run Cleaner button will light back up. CCleaner will remove all your temporary files, browser history, logs and cookies. It will make any further work on your computer easier and it will help prevent malware from getting started again via temp files. After you've done this, attempt to install and run MalwareBytes. You may find that you will need to rename both the installation file and the executable files. You can name them anything, as long as you remember which is which and where they are located. If you are able to open Windows Explorer, find the malwarebytes executable in its folder under Program Files and rename it fro... Read more

Hi there,

I use the DLNA program TVMobili to watch videos/images on my tv from my computer. I recently got a pretty gnarly malware infection that one of the amazing people on Bleeping computer helped me to fix. I'm not sure if it was before the malware, or due to the fixing, but my computer no longer comes up when I look on my TV. I tried reinstalling the program to see if that might help by resetting attributes, but no luck. I appreciate all and any help!

Thank you,
Etana

Answer:Persistent Malware/trojans/popups Ect

(next day update) I cannot stay in windows for more than a few minutes, and opening any type of antispyware or antivirus is pretty much out of the question - causes immediate reboot. I can't go online in safe mode, so I can't post any new HJT logs. Windows doesn't recognize my dvd drive anymore for some reason? not in safe mode nor regular. Is there any information I could post that would be helpful?
Thank you so much for any help!!!

Also, that was made while in safe mode, which I'm now restricted to! The computer reboots as soon as I click on my login on windows startup.

Yeah, I'm still working on it. most of the time is spent waiting for things to be scanned because everything is taking so long in safe mode.
I think that something loads in safe mode, too, because I still get pop unders.

Hi everyone. A few days ago I downloaded something that caused pop-ups, redirects and double tabs to open in my Google Chrome (even though the setting was set to only open ONE tab).

Malwarebytes found 83 malware files (at once) on my system and I cleared it out which removed the pop-ups and redirects, but I found I System Restore isn't working and I can't access the wizard. When I try, it says: SYSTEM RESTORE IS NOT ABLE TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER. PLEASE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, AND THEN RUN SYSTEM RESTORE AGAIN.

However, restarting it and trying again gives you the same results.

I then used the patch #278 sysrestoreenable.reg from Kelly's Corner and it 'installed' but still, System Restore doesn't work.

Another site said that this is evidence I might still have malware that neither Malwarebytes or Ad-aware have been able to detect. Can someone look at the logs and see if there is something I should be concerned about? I couldn't find anything, but I could really use some experienced eyes taking a look.

1: I backed everything up.
2: XP Firewall is and has been on.
3: I downloaded and ran DDS and made logs of programs running (attached).
4: I made a Hijackthis log too (also attached)
My apologies if I did this request incorrectly.
Thank you in advance for your time.

But it's better than it was. Running AVG, SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes beat it back, but re-running them shows some malware on re-boots.

AS catches trojanagent/Gen-Nullo. AVG catches problems in IE from Tool NirCmd, NPI-F, Nircmd-cfxxe which it quanantines, but they keep coming back.

ComboFix did nothing and RootRepeal gives a messge about initializing, but never does anything. SAS and MWB logs are attached. Error messages and the MG logs folder are available, but could only have 4 attachments.

Oh yes, and msconfig has disappeared.

Answer:ComboFix and Root Repeal didn't run, IE doesn't work and there is still malware.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

These are not malware. They are valid tools used by many programs including ComboFix. If you did not shutdown or uninstall AVG as requested before running ComboFix, then this would explain why you could not run ComboFix.

I recently brought a PC gaming starter pack from AWD-IT. The PC arrived on Monday and I set it up the same night. The PC has been working fine until Friday 23rd when the Internet on the computer stopped working. The computer shows that it was still connected to the Ethernet cable and that it should work. The internet around the rest of the house was working properly. The next day I searched for a solution on the Internet and found a problem similar to mine. Using the fix required the internet would be returned for up to 5 minutes the stop working again. The same day I connected a wifi dongle to try and fix the problem. This seemed to work until the PC powered itself down and restarted but now the wifi would show itself to be connected but internet on the computer would not work. Is there anyway to fix this as it feels like I've just thrown loads of my money away.

I recently got back my old laptop, but when plug in my ethernet cable that is hooked up to my router, it doesn't work. I further investigated and found an old modem installed. It isn't my modem, though. I located and uninstalled it's drivers and tried to connect again. That didn't help, because the local area connection thing is gone and my moden didn't come with a disc. I also cant use another because my disk drive is broken.

Any help?

In Windows 7 I could press F1 with the desktop selected and would get help.

If I do this in Windows 10 without the internet connected, I just get a screen saying "Get connected to the Internet".
This is crazy - there's lots of times when I am away from an internet connection and still want help!

If I do have internet, I just get an awful Bing search page - spit! (Yes I know I can use the ghastly search tool and press "Search My Stuff").

Is there no hope here?

hi
for some reasons my internet doesn't work! even though the four light on my speedstream 4100 modem are all green.i have dsl.
i think it got to do with ATM Connection
i checked my connection, everything pass except Atm Connection.
ATM CONNECTION
1) check atm cell-delineation : pass
2)check atm signal : pass
3) preform atm oam segment : Fail!!!!!!
4)preform atm oam end to end ping : fail!!!!!!!!!
i dont even wht i means!!!!!!!!
plz help me as soon as possible.
i dont know wht to do.!!!

Answer:my internet doesn't work!!!!

first i would go to the control panel and click on network and sharing, and see if you are receiving the internet, sometimes you can have all the green lights but you may not be receiving a connection from the company that you are connected with, this problem occurs more if you have Tiscali broadband.
You can right click on the connection monitor at the bottom right of your screen and check the connection properties and see if you are receiving a signal, it depends what OS system you have, if you have XP it will be different than Vista, it isnt much different but it is different,
hope this helps

I have an odd problem, after my DIR-655 died I got a new ASUS RT-N16. All the computers can connect to the router but Firefox/IE won't work. However everything else works such as MSN, Starcraft 2, and Warcraft 3. Everything might work for a few minutes after I reboot the router but only for a few minutes. If I plug in the cable modem straight into my laptop the internet works. I've tried switching the cable modem with Rogers and still the same problems persist. I thought it was the DIR-655 that died when it was having the same problems so I bought the ASUS, yet the still same problems. Please somebody help me!

Hi, have a little internet problem here, if i'm on internet ( using internet explorer/opera) it works good, but if i have something downloading in utorrent at the same time, it eventually stops working, I can't open a new site in explorer and all downloads stop.
But if i go to Local Area Connection and click status, it shows that it's still receiving packets.

Anybody know what the problem can be? I've had utorrent for a long time and i've never had this problem before.

(I have 10Mbit, and it's not wireless)

Thanks

Answer:after a while internet doesn't work

One thing about utorrent it is one of the P2P networks and thus makes it an illegal program to work on here at TSG since almost everything that is downloaded thru these type networks is infected with some sort of virus, trojan or other type. This is stated in the TSG rules

Tech Support Guy Site Rules
http://www.techguy.org/rules.html

I would suggest un-installing the utorrent and then posting a HijackThis log file and we might be able to help in that way. But the utorrent has to be gone and if not it will show up in the log file and there might not be any help.

To download HJTsetup.exe from TrendSecure To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then cl... Read more

Me and my 3 roomates all share VDSL through one router. My 1st roomate went on Limewire and his internet no longer works. I went on Soulseek (another p2p program) and now my internet does not work. My second roomate went on Limewire and his internet will not work either. My third roomate never went on limewire and his computer works fine (I am on his computer posting this right now).

What should we do!?!?!?!?

Does anyone even have a guess as to why this might happen?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Answer:My Internet Doesn't work

Given that any P2P application will infect you quite quickly I am not surprised. One of the reasons that this forum prohibits assisting with any help on P2P.

Your enquiry is just outside that criteria I believe, so I suggest you download HiJackThis on your PC, transfer it to one of the others, run it and post a text log back here (transfer it back to yours).

That would show any infections, but the very first thing to do is to uninstall all P2P from the other PC's. And keep it off.

Hi!

I have a weird problem. I have a router, two computers are connected to it. One has XP, the other has Win 7. On my Win 7 PC sometimes I don't have internet. I mean, it looks good, it tells me I have internet access, but nothing works. I always solve it by remove, and reinstall my NIC driver (Realtek8168B) or disable, then enable it.

It's an old problem, and it gets really annoying. What can I do?

Answer:Internet doesn't work sometimes...

You can try two things Power cycle the modem just unplug the power cord from the back off the modem for about 15 seconds then plug it back in (this should be done on a regular basis to keep the modem functioning properly and update your drivers: Realtek

I mistakenly downloaded hotspotshield, the free VPN. I uninstalled it and noticed that nothing would load, almost as if my wifi wasn't connected. I reinstalled it and found out that unless it's on, nothing except firefox works. Have use Win 10 successfully since released. two weeks ago I began being besieged by immovable persistent popups. Since then I have scanned HP Pavillion laptop with Norton, PC Cleaner, Reimage and AVG [free]. All of them found and cured faults, declared the system clean yet failed to resolve the problem. It was resolved by resetting Win 10 not something I would do again unless an emergency as there are other unresolved issues not present before. My neighbour has just visited saying that he has just experienced the same problem on a computer that he only purchased last week. Any ideas?

Answer:Persistent immovable popups, adware, malware etc

Wonder why you had those problems ?
The following maybe the answer why.

Excerpt about PC Cleaner from a legit and reputable source :
PC Cleaner

PC Cleaner is the name of a Misleading Application (rogue software) designed to display false information, such as claiming your system is infected with malicious threats or other system errors. Misleading applications may also perform annoying actions or inconvenience the user in order to coerce them into purchasing software to remove the nonexistent threats or errors reported. The Norton Power Eraser tool is available to remove the PC Cleaner misleading application.

My problem is that I cannot access the internet through my LAC. I enable the connection and it will connect and send packets, but will not receive any packets. I have no problems enabling my wireless connection and connecting to the internet. The wireless does like to disconnect and reconnect about 3 or 4 times an hour which is another problem I have. I believe this LAC problem started around the same time I was trying to get shared music between my computers on iTunes. I was trying to allow for connection on port 3689, but everything I did was unsuccessful. Any suggestions for any of these problems I'm having?

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
Done! Press ENTER to exit...

Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
Found non-standard or infected MBR.
Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

Hi,

My desktop PC was infected by the nasty Antivirus pro malware a couple days ago. I followed the steps for manual removal listed at ehow.com. It involved stopping the bad processes (it was listed as ofovsysguard.exe on my computer), and deleting files from my hard drive and the registry. I also downloaded and ran Malware bytes anti-malware program and removed any bad files. That seemed to fix the problem, but then when I rebooted, I can not connect to the internet. I think the internet connection is good, since I am using the wireless connection on my laptop with no problem. Please take a look at my HJT log and let me know what I should do next. Looking forward to your help.

BTW, I notice that one of the entries in the HJT lot is this "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ryywnpae] C:\Documents and Settings\Ethelbert\Local Settings\Application Data\qmiymy\ofovsysguard.exe" which is the same exe file that was associated with the malware. Does this mean I am still infected?

Answer:Antivirus Pro removed (I think), but now internet won't work

One additional note, the specific message I get from Windows XP when trying to diagnose my connection problem is this:

"Windows cannot connect to the Internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer.
Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21)."

*Just to clarify, I don't have internet access, I also reset everything (hosts file, flushed dns, release and renewed CHCP, etc... with a program called "netadapter repair all in one" that is on the bleeping computer site*

So we had some malware on the work computer, it was "dns" something. I think it was DNS unlocker but I'm not 100% sure. I removed it with malwarebytes & adwcleaner and it now recognizes that its connected via ethernet cable, but it says unrecognized network. Its a Windows 7 PC and it worked fine before and other Windows 7 PCs work fine.
I believe it has to do with the sonicwall or something else. We have a cable modem/router (2 in 1), a big switch, and a sonicwall. I tried restarting all of them, but that didn't help. So I bypassed the sonicwall and it works, but now that computer doesn't see the network printer!
So basically I would be ok with bypassing the sonicwall as long as I can get the network printer to be recognized, but its not and when I open an explorer window and click on "network" on the left, the other computer that is connected through the sonicwall doesn't show up so I can access the shared printer (the printer is connected via USB to the other computer for now temporarily so 1 computer can use it).
I would prefer to do things correctly and have it work with the sonicwall, but I'm not sure how, any ideas?

Some things I noticed or tried:
1. The computer that does wor... Read more

Answer:Removed some malware off work computer. Now it doesn't connect to the network correctly.

Had a similar one before. From memory try manually resetting the TCP/IP stack.

So basically this whole time I thought it was my internet and my router, but apparently it wasn't. Whats peculiar is, my mac systems are picking up the internet but my windows aren't. However, the status on my windows is connected but not really transferring any 'bytes.' Anyway, I later tested out that Internet Explorer (64-bit) version works. (I primarily use Firefox) I tried the Internet Explorer (32-bit edition), it does not connect, and when I close it, the computer detects an error in closing, same exact errors applies with my other 32-bit applications I use daily like: Miranda IM, utorrent, Firefox...My computer is not completely unstable, and after trying all this, I can come to the conclusion that it's not an internet problem (since 64-bit ie works and when i directly connect my ethernet cable from my modem, only the 64-bit edition works, none of the others like stated above.)

I really think it has to do with something in my operating system, Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (64-bit Edition). I've restarted several times, same problem persists.

Time to reformat?

Your help is greatly appreciated, I can add more details if you'd like, it's just, I'm so dependent on these apps, I'd really like to get to the bottom of this issue.

Answer:Suddenly, only 64-bit applications work on 64-bit OS, 32-bit apps closes/doesn't work

Same exact thing happened to me. To my knowledge there isnt a straightforward fix or none that I could find. I just imaged my drive with a backup.

I think one of the updates messed things up but I cannot confirm that. I messed with the TCP settings and some other fixes but could not fix it.

If you figure it out please post back with your results.

Good Luck!

Hi,

My Sat Pro 6100 has just been away for the usual motherboard and power board replacement with Toshiba, but now I have a strange keyboard problem.

When I turn it on, all the keys work. After a few minutes, '3' doesn't work, then 'r' fails, then '5','7','8','9','0' stop working. At this stage I can feel something getting very hot under the middle of the keyboard. A reboot and no keys work. Another reboot with an external PS2 keyboard, and the internal keyboard is still faulty (some keys work, others don't) but the external one works correctly.

Now if the pc didn't get so hot under the middle of the internal keyboard, then I would conclude that the keyboard was faulty, but for it to fail slowly and sequentially like this, and it fails the same way every day (Since the Toshiba rebuild!).

Maybe, internal keyboard controller overheating?
Does anyone know what this might be? :-(

Cheers,
Homer

Answer:Keyboard on Sat Pro 6100 doesn't work properly after remedial work

Right under the keyboard of your pro 6100 is the VGA graphics controller (the keyboard cable plugs into the same card). It is normal that this part becomes warm during usage.

It's strange that your problem appears after a while and not right away.

It might be just an improper reseating of the keyboard cable (it's a thin layer like a photo film-negative) that easily pops out, but... it can be something more serious, too. (Especially since you had the upgrade done where hardware had to be changed)

I would consult the service center once again and ask for instructions how to deal with this. Don't ignore it (by using an external keyboard instead of the malfunctioning internal) as it might end up into something more serious soon...
