Preferred Solution: total system lock-up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,

I have a custom built PC that seems to have quite a unique issue. (Or so google thinks)

I am unable to load anything other than the bios. When i attempt to boot into windows the computer locks up. When i attempt to choose the repair computer in boot options it shows the windows logo, then the spinning dots and locks up. I attempt to load into the windows setup and the same follows. Spinning dots and locks up. I am currently attempting to format the usb with windows 10 i used to install windows in the first place however i fear more of the same will follow.

Could there be a fix for such an issue?

If more information required just ask.

Answer:Total system lock up

I attempt to load into the windows setup

Hi, do you mean you have tried to boot from a Win 10 bootable medium and this fails too?

If you haven't tried that, please do so.
If you have, please try removing your drive and booting from an external medium (e.g. DVD or flash drive).

History:
What happened prior to this? e.g. my PC was working normally and suddenly the power cut out... there was an update... etc

Also please complete your system specs- we don't even know if this is a laptop or a desktop.

Hey everyone. Starting about a week ago my system started locking up at random times.

I started at my event viewer and found a few errors and and resolved nearly all of them could have caused this. however the problem still persists.

My display drivers are up to date

I dont believe anything else has updated around the time of the crashes.

I am at a loss as to what it could be. It locks up when its just idling and when its being used IE gaming, youtube, web browsing
Any help would be great! thanks

Ever since (several times updated) v1703 my HP 840 EliteBook with powerful correct SSD and continually updated everything (incl. all drivers) will totally freeze/lock-up the entire system including the clock after 5 minutes idle (moving the cursor will reset the time limit). This also happens if it is in Sleep mode. The physical off-button and then starting always fixes it. Reliability history ALWAYS shows DIFFERENT paths and DIFFERENT failure "causes".

I have followed basically ALL the available online advice and the only cure I have not tried is disabling C-states in the (also updated) BIOS because there is no way to get into that in this HP device/BIOS. I have noted that many users have similar problems and that MS pussyfoots around but has no real idea (so there is no point in a re-install .... AND the problem started with v1703 and not with WInX Pro before that).

The total system lock up is unnerving, I shorted my motherboard once with a tea riddled cd drive. The lock up emulates that, the entire system will slow down (framerate audio) then it just stops (still image).

Hi ! Having some rather major trouble with my laptop. Seem to have contracted a virus from a usb stick that was plugged into it. The laptop isn't online at all (it's a pc for music making) and so only had a very old anti virus on it. I installed some new antivirus software to get rid of the virus (I know it was a virus as it was detected on another pc with kapersky security - a trojan / worm thing) but the scan crashed and now the computer totally locks after I log in, just showing the desktop background and no icons. I can get into BIOS but that's it. Also I wanted to do a system restore but another problem, a) I don't have an XP disc as it was pre installed when I bought the laptop and B) the CDROM drive in the laptop itself doesn't work, I use an external usb drive that I can't seem to boot from.

The main problem is I have a lot of recent music data on the PC nearly an album's worth of stuff that isn't backed up fully at all (yes I know). Is there any way to get in and try a system restore ? Control Alt Del doesn't bring up anything on the desktop background freeze screen.

Thanks so much for any help in advance

hello first post here; I've been looking all over there net for someone with a problem like this to no avail.
I hope to brain storm a bit here and narrow the problem down if not fix it so as with all brain storms there no such thing as a bad idea.

I'm fixing a computer for a friend for free so I don't have all the computers stats but I might get them all in full soon:
pentium II 4XXmhz
256 or less ram
pci network card (for a new cable net connection)
running windows xp sp2

the problem starts about half a min after startup half the time it will freeze and the other half it will wait for a random time and freeze sometimes hours later. the freeze is not a slow down when it freezes everything just stops all at the same time and the only way out is to hit the power button.
so far I have tried 2 virus scans and checked with process explorer and hijackthis and didn't see anything abnormal other then a bit of spyware I used msconfig to stop everything non-windows from starting up and got nowhere.
also for some reason I couldn't get the computer into safe mode with F8.
due to a time limt I did not check the ram but I plan to next time I get my hands on it.
I also saw something odd that I left alone at the time, the computer seems to think theres 2 monitors hooked up when theres only one.

in other smaller posts I have seen on the net a lot of people say it's hardware but I don't think it is because it locks up only after the start up never during boot up.

Answer:random total lock ups

my first thought would be hardware related. i suggest creating a bootable cd to further diagnose that path. maybe something like this would work.

Link: UBCD for Windows

it could also be driver related.

I have a newly purchased, refurbished desktop. Probably about 10 times now over a few months it will completely freeze, the mouse and everything, the screen is completely frozen and all input is unresponsive.

Things to consider:
The applications I'm running when this takes place aren't consistent.
I have an OEM 300-watt power supply (on an Athlon X2 64 3800+, 250GB, 2GB DDR).
I have two DIMMs of 1GB DDR PC3200 ram of the same speed, but different brands.
Event viewer doesn't show any system errors at the time the computer freezes, however it does seem to generate about 20 DCOM errors whenever I obtain a new IP over our network.
I wrote zeros to my hard drive yesterday and have used it minimally since then, so I don't believe this is virus/spy-ware related.

Does this sound more like an under powered power supply problem, or a bad RAM problem? Any ideas?

Thanks allot!

My computer seems to be seriously infected with some sort of vicious malware and I have no idea how to go about removing it.

I am unable to connect to the internet at all, none of the installed anti virus software I have will even run. I can not copy/paste or drag and drop any of my files onto an external hard drive in order to save them.

Is there anything at all I can do? I figured I'd be able to download some software onto this working machine and transfer onto a usb but as all anti-virus software needs some sort of online registration I can not run any of it on the infected machine.

I can not even run the infected machine in safe mode as it seems to crash on start up.

I have a number of photographs etc which are not backed up anywhere else and would dearly love to rescue them if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

At least once a day, IE will totally lock-up my computer. Mouse stops moving & keyboard stops responding. Only solution is the reset button.
It started about a month ago. Ran antivirus (didn't find anything) & spyware removers (only tracking cookies), it still did it. I did an upgrade to IE7 & it still did it. I did a full-format reinstall & it still does it. It even did it today while I was browsing inside the AOL software.
It does it constantly on myspace, yahoo, & even did it once on walmart.com. Seems no site is safe. I'm at a total loss as what could be causing this.

I'm running XP MC 02 w/sp2, IE6 on a P4 2.8G, 1G ram.

Thanks in advance

My pc has been running fine for a couple of years, and then recently it's started to just completely lock the entire OS while I'm using it. It never happens when it's idle, it only happens when I'm using it, and it just completely freezes everything, the mouse, keyboard, etc... and NOTHING is responsive! It even spins up the internal fans on the desktop case until I hit restart.

I've followed the instructions on this thread:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ta-452654.html

And attached is the zip with the perfmon html file and the output folder from the bsod file collection app.

And the following is the info from the other thread as well:

? Windows 7 Home Premium ? 64 bit ? this is the original OS that came with the system ? OEM OS installation ? 2 - 3 years old system ? still using the OS came with system, never formatted/reinstalled ? cpu - AMD Phenom II x4 965 ? gpu - nvidia geforce gtx 550 ti ? MotherBoard -?? how do I find this? ? Power Supply - brand & wattage - ?? how do I find this too? ? System Manufacturer & Exact model number -- Microtel AMTI9041 Desktop computer
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks very much.

As a follow up, it happened again this morning, while playing a game. I tried to change resolution in the game to go down a notch to get smoother framerate and BAM the sound got stuck on infinite 1 second repeat, and no cursor or keyboard or system responses.

This makes me think it's gotta be graphics driver, right? I also looked up in the event viewer, and every single time this happens, the system registers event id 6008, source: event log, level: error. For the details of this it gives the following details:

I have been handed a Dell XPS system with Windows XP Professional SP2 (owner is not entirely sure on the o.s.).

I've attempted restarting the system in all modes. (normal, last good configuration, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt.)

To make matters worse attempts to read the event log prove worthless seeing as the Bios administrator password is unknown.

So I resorted to using a Windows XP Professional SP2 Operating System disc to attempt using the Recovery Console which can not be loaded as the system has been built as an array so the Console does not recognize the system as having any hard drives installed. (I'm not familiar with array systems so I may be doing something incorrectly here.)

I don't currently have any external drive cases compatible with this drive nor another system that could mount the drive as slave. Also I do not have any backup images of the drive or any restoration points that I'm aware of.

If there is any hope at all without having to reformat as I've only been asked to recover the data to install on a new system, please let me know and I will gladly attempted any method possible.

Thank you.

Answer:Hang on "windows is starting" Total lock-out

If it's a RAID array, then you have to load the drivers for the RAID controller in order to see the file system. I'm not very good with RAID, so I'd have to leave that to others.

I'd suggest professional data recovery services, such as those from:
Data Recovery - Recover data with our world class data retrieval, disk recovery, file recovery services and data recovery software by Kroll Ontrack (I used their software several years ago)
Data Recovery - Recover data with our world class data retrieval, disk recovery, file recovery services and data recovery software by Kroll Ontrack (work used them for data recovery about a year ago)
Expensive, but worth it if the customer must have the data recovered.

I've been using my t61  (7659-12u)   for a few years and love every minute of it.I just installed windows 7 64bit and its been quite smooth. Looking around on there are a lot of sweet deals for new machines but I don't see myself getting rid of my lenovo anytime soon.  I had plans to upgrade the ram to 4gig because i have the 64 bit of windows 7 installed but then got thinking about replacing the system board with the NVIDIA 140M version found in this computer here. Maybe something else?SO the idea is to upgrade the board and graphics all in one shot, processor upgrade and max out to 4 gigs of ram.I've been searching all day for someone who has done this but i cant seem to find anyone thats blogged about it.Anyone have an incite to this idea?

Welcome to the forum!I would not suggest changing the motherboard to one with nVidia GPU since these have a reasonably high failure rate, and you'd be out of warranty and on your own if such a board failed. Your X3100 is much safer. You can throw in 8GB of RAM in T61 if you choose to do so, BTW.Good luck.

I pride myself on being able to diagnose and repair almost any computer problem, but this one has driven me over the edge. Started with a computer that would give a 404 error code when trying to access any website except two or three. No reason for these 3 to work and no others. Ran Superantispyware, Avast, and several others. Found nothing. Ran CCleaner and cleaned out all the junk. Did not help. Shut down for the day, and when I started out this morning, it would not load Windows. Gave an error that the hal.dll file was missing from the root directory. Replaced the file with a known good one from another XP machine, using the Recovery panel. No good. Got the same error. This is a Media Edition of XP that was OEM, so no disks except a recovery disk that I know from experience wipes out everything. Decided to load another version of Windows XP home edition into a new directory and see if I could get it to boot up. Then thinkgs got really weird. CD booted up fine and started into loading the windows program. Then it stopped and gave me an error that there was no CD in the drive. I have two CD drives so I tried it in both drives. Same error. Green light on the drive is lit and drive is whirring, but will not read either one. Cannot get past this error, so I cannot even load up a new version of Windows. Next, I tried to access the data on the hard disk by sticking another disk into the machine from another computer that had a valid XP system installed on it.... Read more

Answer:Total System Crash - XP

Since you're having trouble with the CD drives I don't know if you would be able to get something like the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD), Avira AntiVir Rescue System or a Linux live CD to boot or not. If you could, it might help you solve the problem. I'd give it try before doing the following:

Maybe pull the hard drive you want to copy data from and place it in an external enclosure or connect the hard drive, internally, as a second hard drive to another computer. Then copy the data(scanning for malware first). Once you get every thing you want copied, put the drive back in the original machine and use the OEM recovery disk. I don't see any way around having to re-install applications.

First of all the problem: My computer is crashing on almost every game I try to play on this comp. Guildwars and World or Warcraft are the worst for crashes, cause there is no message.. no warning. My comp just shuts down completely. *poof* So that really sucks cause I cant imagine that is very good for the computer. They do run though. Sometimes for quite a long time.. other times its only like 15mins before it crashes.

I also have Medal of Honor Pacific Assault and it has problems too. When it crashes it like it gets laggy for a sec then a message pops up asking me if want to send an error report.. (which doesnt tell me anything) and then it just kicks me out of the program. A couple of times my mouse has shut off while I played this game. The mouse just stopped working completely. The light went off and everything. This problem usually occurs within like 15mins at least and alot of times sooner than that.

About the only game that does work is Railroad Tycoon 3. lol. Which as much as I love gets kinda boring after awhile.

I tried downloading drivers for my comp. But I havent really had any luck with that.

Guess I should give you my hardware if that helps.

ok..

Still struggling after 4 months with a Dell Dimension 9600 running XP. Blue screens, ( STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524 OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000),stalling when actually running. Tried everything - honest, see previous posts. Have installed new HDD, new motherboard, new RAM (all from Dell!) Still unable to install XP to new disk. Stalls to blue screen after loading files from recovery CD and starting Windows to continue installation. Out of sheer desperation tried putting Vista on. No luck but installation now stalls and sometimes asks for a DVD driver. Tried giving it one but no luck. Only bit not changed in DVD drive (TSST Corp TS - H5553 has a mixed reputation. I am told) Given I have changed everything else, is a change of DVD drive the only option?

What I can't understand is why I can't do a clean install of XP to the new HDD unless it is a DVD problem. If it is a DVD problem then why would it cause the PC to stall when not in use?

If it is a CPU problem, can I test for that?

Monday night, my computer had no issues. On Tue morning, suddenly, all programs became really slow and I was getting a lot of "not responding" messages. I don't believe that I've downloaded anything in the last few days and can't find the issue.
I followed your instructions for the Win7 malware removal and all scans came up with nothing. The results are attached.
My computer is less than a year old and obviously, this is a bummer. Your help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Total system slow down

Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm not seeing any signs of malware. It may be that you are just a victim of what you are running or perhaps your PC is busy getting updates for various software including Windows. Also perhaps that Datasafe software you are running from Dell is eating up your CPU and internet connection speed.

However let's check a couple additional scans.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky

TDSSkiller - How to run

Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Now please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon

Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
Done! Press ENTER to exit...

Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
Found non-standard or infected MBR.
Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:

Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Hi! My computer is Windows XP....using AVG as virus protection and AD-Aware and occassionally Spybot for junk removal. Last week a program called Total Security took over my computer. Not sure yet why AVG would not have caught it as it is updated regularly. Anyway, I tried to run Ad-Aware and it would not let me. Same with Spybot. AVG scanned and removed a couple items but upon restart the Total Security issues were all still there. Tried booting in safe mode and it blocks that too. Did finally run an AVG scan and it said it removed 3 items but now upon restart I find it gets as far as displaying wallpaper picture...bottom items (Start, clock, etc) start to display and disappear and it stops there. Not longer have any icons...just the wallpaper picture. I had disconnected everything and hooked it up at a different location and it did start ok...so I ran AVG scan again...said found items again and upon restart when finished I am back to just wallpaper. I tried booting from disk to do a scan with Norton SystemWorks 2004 disk where it scans for viruses before downloading and that scan showed no viruses. Tried restarting in safe mode and still cannot. Anyone have any suggestions if I can do anything from this point??

Any help appreciated!

Answer:Total Security took over system

If you can no longer boot your PC in either normal boot mode or safe boot mode, there is not much we can do for you to remove malware other than suggest you scan the drive by slaving it into another properly protected PC. Note that if you have a laptop, slaving a laptop drive requires special hardware so this may not be an option for you. Or another option is using another PC to make CDs like the below and use them to scan your PC:

http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html
UBCD4Win
However, you may want to try the below if you have your Windows boot CD or the Recovery Console installed. This could possibly get your PC bootable again.

Hi I'm running Windows Home Vista and have a huge problem. My Computer only works for approximately 5 minutes before it goes to a blue screen with an error message. When I try to go to pages to fix my computer, the page is rerouted, and I cannot install software I managed to download. I have read other posts similar to my problem on other sites and none of the fixes work. It seems like I have a version of the virus that has been updated since these fixes have been found. The hardest thing about the whole problem is the small time window with which I have to work. The programs I've tried to install are SDFix and ComboFix both of which I found on other forums. Please help me out, I also want to mention that I couldn't get a log because HijackThis won't Install just like the others. A windows security warning comes up asking me if I'm sure I want to run the program and click run. Then the windows User Account Control window comes up and asks me if I want to continue or cancel. I click continue and nothing happens. Moments later a new window pops open and tells me the program may not have installed correctly even though the install never initiated

I started by doing the initial diagnosis for first time users and Hijack this could not complete its run due to an error message.

Here is the error message: For some reason the system denied access to the Host file. If any hijacked domains are in this file,Hijack this may not be able to fix this. If that happens you need to edit the file yourself,

Hey guys, this is a really strange problem I am having. I was on my comp. and I installed a few free software programs...stuff from Stardock to change desktops etc. and when I had finally installed everything and rebooted I got this blue screen with IBM in the top left hand corner and in big letters in the centre of the screen it says O/S 2 Warp. After this it goes to the blue screen of death and then re-starts. It goes in this continuous circle indefinately. It is very wierd too because I have Windows XP Professional installed and the IBM O/S 2 Warp is another operating system if I am correct. Another weird thing that happened before this incident was Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro. no longer displayed anything when I told it to scan file(s) for viruses. Not sure if the two are at all connected. I know, Norton is not very good, I will be installing Kaspersky soon because I am not overly happy with Norton. Anyway, I booted into safe mode and am did a virus scan which found two viruses. I deleted them both and re-started my comp. It was fine then and even re-started fine a few times after that. Then after I had updated windows to Service Pack 2 (should have updated MUCH sooner) and re-booted I had the same prob. I have tried re-booting like 20 times since then and everytime I hit that same prob. again. I really don't understand this issue and it appears to be quite severe. Thank god I have two computers so I can still access the net with this one. Anyway, I would really apprec... Read more

Hi again....I need your help

My 5 year old grandson was playing web games and clicked on something that gave me a virus. I am on a borrowed lap top right now because my WHOLE SYSTEM is shut down. I got the dredded blue screen.. Nothing will work, it says the virus is in my anti virus and to start it up but it wont start. I can get into the control panel, but no other programs will open up. I have Free AVAST for virus protect. I tried to re start in safe mode but it wont work either. Now there is a message displayed across my whole screen that says WARNING YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED YOUR HARD DRiVE KEEPs INFORMATION THAT CAN RUIN YOUR LIFE...IT GOES ON AND ON...YOUR BOSS, WIFE, KIDS CAN SEE........ETC...
So I have un hooked the tower for right now. Is there something I can do myself, not sure what steps to take....

Hope you can help me again.......

Dell Windows XP AVAST anti-virus

I have tried to download the Malicious Software Removal Tool from microsoft, but it keeps getting blocked by the virus.

Thank You
Missy

Answer:Total System Shut down

Update:

I found out that the 'thing' I had was the "System Tool" spyware. I worked on it all day Sunday and I'm pretty sure I got rid of it.
I googles system Tool removal and followed the instructions from the first site that came up.
I also purchased my AVAST virus program, I had been using the free version.
The only problem left is what to do with the programs that the "fix" left on my pc...It took me 4 different downloads because the "System Tool", kept blocking the install.
Then I had to download Malwarebytes Anit malware, and that is still in the pc also.

Alright so I inherited a mess, a friend of mine let someone else build her computer because I'm normally very busy. I take her computer to my shop, run all the diagnostic hardware I have, everything passes.

Replaced the hard drive since Caviar Green isn't optimal for gaming, replaced it with Caviar Blue, also replaced the Graphics card with a 5770. She had it running the night before into the wee hours. Next day it freezes and crashes on her. So with no bug reports, with nothing being dumped and the only time she crashes is inside of an instance. Is this a hardware or a software issue. I do this for a living and I've yet to come across something like this. All drivers up to date. No conflicts. No BSoD, just a system hang.

Also I had to tighten the motherboard since the guy who built it left half the screws halfway unscrewed. Didn't tighten the board. Not sure if he used spacers, the CPU runs at 54C under AIDA64's CPU Stress Test.

Answer:New PC total system freeze during WoW

I guess you will have run diagnostics on the memory but have you tried running the PC on one stick at a time?

Is there anything reported in Event Viewer coinciding with the time of the freezes?

Have you tried the onboard graphics (if it has any) with the graphics card removed or tried another known good card?

Is the memory voltage set correctly and is it overclocked?

What OS is this PC running?

Question: Total system halt

ok, im stumped,My computer is acting really weird. It will boot right, start windows, edit HTML documents and I can leave it running for days just fine, but when I try to do something like, play a game, even an older, low graphic req. game (eg. warcraft: orcs and humans) my computer will just halt, after about 5-20 minutes. I don't even get the blue screen of doom, just a frozen screen of what ever I was doing. Oh, also, it will freeze when I try to convert a video to fit on my iPod. and the only thing graphic in the program I use is a green progress bar.Any Ideas?computer information listed belowWinodws XP professional sp1aMotherboard: ASRock K7vtz  Ram: 2, 128 PC100 sticksCPU: AMD duron 1300 GHzHDD: 1, Maxtor 20GB  S3 ViRGE/DX/GX video cardSamsung DVD rom drive USB 2.0

Also, the S3 ViRGE/DX/GX video card only registers as a 4MB card. I got it, working from Mrjcwhite, and it is soupposed to be at least 8MB. I'm guessing that is a driver, or firmware issue but I'm not sure. Thanks

I need some help with my Sony Viao laptop.I started my laptop last night and it immediately went into a black screen saying that some recently installed software or hardware was causing problems. It gave me a number of options which included 'safe mode', 'restart in last working configuration', 'restart in normal mode' and a few other options. No matter what I do, it reverts back to this screen. Starting in safe mode brings up a list of things I do not understand, the end of the last line reads 'windows\system32\drivers:mup.sys. I spoke to Sony Helpdesk and they asked me to press f2 and reset the bios, which I did and then asked me to reboot. It just went back the same black screen. He then said I need to do a complete reinstall.Does anyone know if there is anything else I can do or even any way to save my files before a reinstall as I have a few recent bits or work that I didn't have backed up. My hard drive is partitioned into a c-drive and a d-drive. All program files are on the c and the other documents etc are on the d-drive.Thanks in advance for any help

I was just wondering if anyone knows how to completely wipe out a computer and start it over like it is brand new. I have an Acer Aspire laptop with windows XP. Also just wondering if this is bad for the computer or if it is okay to do that.

Answer:total system recovery

The computer should have come with a recovery disk. Just put the disk in the CD-ROM and reboot the computer and follow the instructions to recover. If your computer did not come with a recovery disk you may need to check to see if there is a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. If neither of these applies to you then you will need to contact ACER support to have them send you the recovery disk unless you have a legal stand-alone copy of Windows.

BTW.....There is no danger or harm in reformatting your drive. I recover my PC from a Ghost image all the time whenever it starts running slow or gets infected with harmful files.

Hi,
Earlier this evening I made the bad choice of plugging in my friends old ipod into my computer. Only to have whatever was on it start bugging out my computer.
First of all it turned off AVG's background monitor, then it killed AVG alltogether so that it would no longer scan for viruses.
Searching odd processes in both firefox and ie results in obscure sites automatically redirecting or the whole thing just closing whenever it feels like it.

I have found files like msa.exe msb.exe msc.exe etc in my "c/windows/temp" dir and under "users/temp"

I have somewhat managed to kill a process "a.exe" that began every time I started windows.

Firefox on opening begins immediately downloading "index.php?controller=microinstaller&abbr=WSD&setupType=SetupReleaseXP.cab&pid=3"

I really don't know how to fix my computer if I can barely even get to the sites for anti virus programs and then I get canned everytime I try to install or use them.

I would really rather NOT have to wipe my computer and start yet again :(

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put it since I'm not sure if the problem is caused by my operating system, another program, a hardware problem, or spyware/malware, but it seems like the best place. I realize this one may be a bit hard to fix due to a Catch 22 - if I could run diagostic programs on my computer, it would mean that my computer was capable of loading up and therefore my problem is solved. I'm also not sure of the exact part names in my computer since the only way I know to check model numbers is to load it up and use a program or system options to view them, which I can't do either. I can read the specs off the front of it though.

Hi all. I believe my 4-yr old Packard Bell desktop PC has caught a virus that seems to have destroyed the HD completely.

I was running WinXP SP2 and installed a somewhat dubious program (though McAfee did give it the all-clear). After installation I was met with the following BSOD...

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000000, 0x00000001c, 0x00000001, 0x804FB006)

My situation...

- 'Start Windows Normally' and 'Last known good config.' both present the same BSOD.

- Selecting any Safe Mode option results in a blank blue screen with just a couple of unintelligible characters in the upper left of the screen.

- I don't have a Restore CD for my copy of Windows but am willing to switch to Linux. I've downloaded and burned a Ubuntu boot disk, made sure the BIOS is set to boot from CD, inserted CD and get only the following...

Boot from CD:
1. HD System Type- (0B)
Missing operating system_

In all of the above cases the keyboard is unresponsive except for when I'm accessing and changing the BIOS menus. I can't figure a way to interact with the hard drive at all, even to format it.

The PC is old but I want it for a media server, so I'd like to get it working again if possible. Any advice would be much appreciated. thanks.

Answer:Total system death. Can't even install new OS?

P.S. I have downloaded and burned the WinXP Recovery Console. Attempting to boot from that only gives me this:

Suppose If I have opend many windows, documents, Excel sheets, Internet explorer pages etc.. And and I need shutdown the system. If I re-boot the system I need to open all windws excel sheets web pages etc and it will take long time.

Is there any solution to save all the windows status open automatically when I re-boot the system. If there is no option at least for web pages can restore automaticlly when I restart system ?

Please reply..

Answer:How to save Total System status ?

There is hibernation and there is sleep. Sleep requires a continuous supply of power to retain the data in memory whereas hibernation uses hard drive space and therefore doesn't need power. Hibernation takes longer for the computer to enter and resume from. As for a full shutdown that clears the memory of everything and saves no running programs.

The short answer is yes. This file is only seen when the "Show hidden files and folders" option is enabled and Exporer's thumbnail view is also enabled. A new one will be created if the above remains the same and you open it's original directory again.

Was trying to scroll down a web page when the system froze, so I powered off and then on. BIOS didn't detect my hdd and it obviously wasn't getting power as there were no hdd windup sounds. The case fan was working as well as other case lights. On the second BIOS screen, after is says "verifying dmi pool data" was the message " boot disk failure, insert emergency boot disk" or something similar. After fumbling with startup floppy and getting another freezeup, I powered off and then on again. But now I get nothing at all, no BIOS screen, and the monitor's status light is indicating no data coming from the hdd. Repeated this with the same response.

After letting it ( and me) cool a few hours, I decide to try my old hdd, as the one in use was installed used and what do I know about hdd failure symptoms? So with a different hdd in there it boots right up, no detection problems. But after numerous startups and shutdowns trying to get all the drivers working again, this drive now fails to be detected.

Failed to mention that whenever I got a BIOS screen, the cd drives were always detected. They are on the secondary ide cable. There is only one drive on the primary.

So its not the hdd. Seems like it can't be the power supply. Would it be the mobo?

Answer:Total system failure, then no problem?

it's possible; i've seen ide controllers die on motherboards many times in the past; they seem to be a common component of the motherboard to go. just to be sure, you can use a voltmeter/multimeter to check the voltage of the 5v and 12v lines of the power connector, as well as making sure the drives work flawlessly on other computers. good luck

If I don't enter and just let it start normally, it goes into windows fine.. and then black and hang machine after 30 sec or so

If I try to boot to CD-rom (so I can ghost image) it will go black and hang immediately

Man.. very much lose hope now >_<

From what I've read regarding this game and the Minimum Requirements. They only apply if you're happy to pay around 40 for a game to run at a snails pace, with bad graphics. Then you'll be back here asking us why your Pc isn't playing the game whe way you thought it would! click here

Hey Guys, this is my first post on this forum, but I want you guys to know I'm VERY knowledgeable when it comes to computers.

The Situation:

I installed windows 8 a while back, & it was perfect I liked it MUCH better than 7, because it gave me better performance. Then about seven days ago, I restarted and went to Windows XP (Dualboot). Little did I know that XP had a disk check scheduled. I accidentally allowed it to check the windows 8 hard drive. At first I didn't notice any problems then, outta' nowhere, windows starts freezing randomly. I figured it was because of the windows xp check disk running on the new windows 8 ntfs. So I ran a windows 8 check disk, & it froze at 28%, so I hard reset. I thought I was probably screwed, & sure enough windows would not boot, instead it would invoke a bsod with code 0x21a. So the FIRST thing I did was use recovery environment to completely backup the windows 8 drive. Then I formatted the old drive, & moved the windows 8 install to another drive I have. Then I tried booting windows off the new drive, only to get the same result. So again, I went into the recovery environment, & discovered that the incomplete checkdisk had some how corrupted my system32\config\ folder (system/software registry's , etc.) So I restored the files using the "System Volume Information" folder to manually get the registry restore points. That worked, and it seemed that windows had stopped freezing too. But, now it has started fr... Read more

Although this step isn't required, it is strongly suggested. It's the first step(s) that we run on every computer we take in at work - and it saves us lot's of work when we do find a hardware problem.
Please run these free, bootable diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Post back with the results of the tests in order to let us know if they were done successfully or not.

I've had my GTX 285 for a few years now and I haven't had any problems til now. Starting about 4 months ago I've been unable to play games without my entire system crashing. On higher end next gen games, the crash comes as soon as I am in game. On older games from 2002 or so, I can play for about 15 minutes before it crashes. When the computer does crash, I have to completely unplug the power and wait for the motherboard to power down before I can restart the computer.

There are no heat issues with either my CPU or GPU, I'm getting plenty of power, and I've swept out and reinstalled all of my drivers. Thoughts?

I started off with pop ups regarding Total Security spyware wanting me to purchase the product, I was unable to run AVG. I finally got Malwarebytes Anti Malware to download and run by naming it mbamm.exe. It found 21 infected items and I removed them all, included in that list was Rogue Total Security and Rogue Protection System. I had to reboot to finish the removal and when it booted up everything seemed fine, I was able to run AVG and AVG found a Virus in svchost called Win32/Cryptor. It would not heal it, the computer was shut down and left overnight. Once I booted up this morning all the pop ups began again except this time its my Security Center saying virus protection not found and protection system will pop up for me to download. Also, continues to pop screens that tell me certain virus are found like Email-Worm Win32NetSky.q and Win32Hala.a

I run malwarebytes and it finds the same 8 items every time I remove them and reboot and same things happens over and over again.

Finds Trojan Agent in 2 files and Memory Module
Rogue Coreguard
Roge Protection System
Malware Trace
Hijack Windows Update

Please HELP!! I have tried everything I can think of short of wiping the hard drive.

Hi

I wonder what kind of settings can be put on this or the features that can be disabled to keep it running smoothly.

I keep installing and uninstalling this software. It slows my web browsing, makes firefox almost unusable.

My setup is a i5 6 GB laptop.

I bought 3 licenses for kis total 2016 during this march. It seems like all will go to waste lol.

I got 2 unused licenses for total security. If anybody is interested in trading for another security product, let me know. I can provide you with the purchase screenshot or proof.

I have been trying to find an answer to removing these Trojans that I think it may be to late. I am running Windows XP-Pro. and have Internet Explorer7. I ran a scan using Spybot Search and Destroy and it show 2 extra infections I was not aware that I had. AT first these 2 Trojans showed up: Trojan-Downloader-Zlob & Trojan-Downloader-vunder(I think)Sp. Later in the week I ran another scan and 2 others showed up:-ZLOB-downloader.oid & ZLOB-Downloader.vdt. I have even had a tech out that was a local geek, but he seemed to not want to discuss it. I am afraid that this computer is going to crash big time, if ithas not already done so.
If anyone can help me I really need it. It has changed my passwords, it now working to close out my email address and the last Windows One Care that I ran, showed no problems, but the Spy Dr. I ran suggested 683 total problems.

Thanks to anyone that can save what little computer I have left.
Thanks,

Hello all,

I am getting ready to move from an AMD build over to an Kaby Lake i7 7700k that I won from work I am pretty much replacing everything save my disk drives (Samsung 512GB 850 Pro and WD Black 1.5TB, 64mb cache). I had a few questions before I make all this changes. First I'll tell you what I am replacing with what and then I'll ask my few questions.

AMD FX-8320 >>> Intel i7 7700k
G.Skill Ripjaw X Series DDR3 1866 >>> Corsair Dominator Platinum Series DDR4 3000
Asus M5A99X Evo >>> MSI 270 Titanium XPower Gaming
Don't recall PSU >>> EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G3
Hyper Evo 212 >>> Corsair Hydro Series H115i
120 mm random fans >>> Noctua 140mm NF-p14s redux-1500 RPM fans
Antec 1100 v2 >>> Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX, Tempered Glass Edition
Reusing my Samsung 512GB 850 Pro
Reusing my WD Black 1.5TB, will move to 5TB WD Black in future
Reusing 2 VS248s, will move to a pair of UHD displays in future

I am considering buying a Samsung 250GB 960 Evo/Pro to use as my OS drive. Then I can use my 850 Pro for all my games and the 1.5/5TB HDD for my data. To me it seems the performance boost from the 850 Pro to the 960 series is a rather significant jump which is why I am considering it. If I take this route what is the proper way to set this up? Plug in just M.2 drive to start, install OS and updates, then plug in 850 Pro and HDD? Please let me know best practice here.

The clean install would be proper as you'll be changing a lot of hardware, essentially making it a new computer. Getting Win10 activated on the new hardware may require using the Product Key that came with Win7 or Win8/8.1.

I have an HP that runs Vista in 64 bit. I've had a problem with it periodically crashing -- the entire system, that is. I'll put the computer to sleep and then, when I come back to it, I get the blue dead screen. The only thing I can do is manualy shut off and then reboot. I haven't lost any data yet, but it scares me each time.

I've noticed recently that every time I've had this crash I've also been prompted for an update to my Adobe Flash. I suspect now that something in that update causes the crash, but you never know.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? If so, is it just a matter of removing Flash altogether. All of those updates are a pain, but it is a useful app.

Thanks for anyone able to give a hand.

My son has been using the computer, Dell 660, i5 system. It seems very slow to start to load and then comes up with the following error messages:
LaunchTM.exe Application Error
Consent.exe Application Error
mcagent.exe Application Error
rundll32.exe Application Error
wermgr.exe Application Error
mcupdates.exe Application Error
Taskhost.exe Application Error
explorer.exe Application Error
LaunchTM.exe Application Error

These are the errors that have occurred over the several times I have had to hard restart it since I can not shut it down normally. I have never been able to get into the desktop or any of the system applications. The only change was adding a video card, PowerColor AX7750 1GBK3-H Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card, which had been working perfectly for a week.

Any thoughts or idea's....right now this new computer of less than 1 month is toast.

Thanks!

Answer:Total system failure...unable to get to desktop

Have you tried pulling out the GPU and seeing if it will boot up normally?

My guess would be a power issue, that being not enough power is being supplied to the new GPU installed do to the stock PSU isntalled. Looking at PowerColor sites for that model GPU, it requires a minimum of a 400 watt PSU. Seeing as this PC is a retail Dell, and with out the service tag number I can't get the original system specs I can't determine what wattage PSU yours has, I would almost bet it's a PSU under power issue.

Since you say its been working for a week before the trouble started, makes me wonder. I would recheck the GPU to make sure it's fully seated and in the correct PCIe slot, then check to make sure that the power connections to the GPU are fully seated. Then make sure you have the latest driver installed which should be 13.9 from AMD.

Hello,

Thank you for providing a clear and detailed tutorial for removing the Total System Care in windows 7. Unfortunately, I fell victim to installing this software and was surprised when I read about the damage it can cause.

I started to follow your tutorial to remove it and downloaded your removal tool, however there seems to be a problem with the installation of your removal tool. After I download it and click 'run' I automatically get the following message before it installs:

Line 1971
Error: variable must be of type 'object'

I added a screen shot to of the message I get.

Could you please help because I want to remove this Total System Care as quickly as possible?

Many thanks
Richard

Its slowing because when you start the program, you will be using the massive 2Gb pagefile for mem storage. (HDD is slower than Memory by a lot)

Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Hello, I've been dealing with this issue for roughly 2 months now, my computer completely crashes, (Screen freezes on the last thing I saw before the crash, cannot even turn on/off num or caps lock with my keyboard, mouse is completely unresponsive, ctrl alt del does nothing, just a total crash, totally unresponsive).
This occurs any time I'm attempting to launch a game, most MMOs, Star wars battlefront, everything, they all occur after login before I would actually see the gameplay, (after i input username and password and hit play, before character or environment loads)
What has me stumped is that this does not occur when I launch fallout 4, Guild wars 2, League of Legends (Other fairly intensive games) It only occurs with CERTAIN games.
I've done everything I can think of, I've tested my HDD with seagate tools, ive ran furmark, heaven benchmark, ive tested my CPU with hotcpu tester, ive tested my GPU, ive tested my RAM, ive changed setting after setting in my AMD control center, from overclocking my GPU to underclocking my GPU to messing with CPU power settings, any test you can think of, ive most likely done it. My drivers are all up to date and ive even attempted rolling back my drivers to a previous version and nothing changes, the games are of course up to date, AND this issue has followed me from Windows 7 to Windows 10, (I changed to windows 10 from 7 in an attempt to fix this and the problem still occurs) I'm at my wits end, i've poured probably a ... I've been having thisproblem for awhile now when I try to open my email in earthlink total access. Everything freezes up. There have been times I need to pull the plug to shut down, since nothing else responds. I open the task manager panel, (ctrl+ alt + delete) click processes, and lsas.exe is shown as the most cpu usage at 95- 100%. Can't close earthlink task panel, shut down from start menu or log off. I tried starting by clicking IE which opens and goes to my normal (earthlink) home page, and I can then open mail box without a problem. I contacted Earthlink help, they told me it was likely background programs running that cause the problem, and shut off un necessessary ones. I tried this and have the same problem. I have a Dell 4550 with Windows XP. Bought this in 02 and only recently had this problem.I had not installed anthing new prior to this. I did get some spyware, (dialer) near the same time, but I thought I got rid of it. I have tried various recomedations with no help. I have run Norton 2006 anivirus, Ewidio, Adaware se, and Windows deffender, they all come up clean. I ran the Dell diagnostic disc that came with the unit and it said that something is not configured properly, but what? Ihave even tired to send error reports to Microsoft, and the response I get is not responding when I get it, so I don't know what they have to say. I would appreciate any help with this. Hi mark b.I contacted Earthlink help, they told me it was likely background programs running that cause the problem, and shut off un necessessary ones.I wouldn't expect them to say anything different.I was with Earthlink for 8 years before I dumped dial-up. Always had a good connection too.I can tell you one thing for sure. There is no extra software, like Total Access, required to connect and setup any accounts with Earthlink. They should call it "Total Garbage". If I were you, I'd remove it and setup manually.Sorry, don't mean to rant but I hate it when an ISP does this to it's customers. In any case, search for a file called "ARUpld32.exe".If you see it, double click it and remove all the checkmarks on all the tabs.If it doesn't help, rename it by puting a single number at the end of the .exe extension.Let us know.

Alright, this one is really f'ed up. Please somebody let me know if I should run a HJT log and post it in that forum for review. Last night I sat down at my computer when all of a sudden in completely shut down. It came back up (or so I though) kind of quick. However, when I went to move my mouse I found that it was completely frozen. I powered down completely and when I tried to bring it back up I got absolutely nothing, no startup screen, no visual anything on the monitor. The green light was on showing power to the tower (instead of Tower of Power - music reference for you youngins) but nothing on the monitor. I thought that maybe the monitor blew out so I hooked up a spare that said "No signal available." This went on for several times and could not get anything. Could not even get to boot to safe made or anythign, even with recovery disk in. Let it sit for awhile and later it came on briefly and went off again so I shut it down last night. Right now it's working again but I feel it's like a patient in ICU and the thing could go down any minute.

It's about a 3 yr old Compaq Presario SR 1930T with Intel Pentium 4 Processor. I have XP Home edition. I run a McAfee Firewall and regularly use Adaware, Spybot, Malwarebytes, and Superantispyware. Normally the light for the CPU is yellow and flickers to show that it is thinking. When I first would power up it would be yellow and then go to green and I'd get nothing else. It is green ... maybe CPU is overheating? ........ it's on many days in a row. Could it be as simple as that?It is not a "CPU over-heating" problem, nor is the problem due to leaving the computer on for long periods of time. You are faced with a hardware problem. The symptoms point to a failing PSU (power supply unit) ... at least that's where I would start. The PSU on an OEM computer such as this one is perhaps the "weakest link in the chain".The only effective way to "test" whether the PSU is actually the problem is to replace it with a known good working unit, capable of supplying the system's requirements comfortably, and see whether the problem persists or is resolved. In many cases, PSU failure is a gradual process, starting with intermittent "problems", but inevitably leads to "total failure" to start/run the system.

Hello, I am faced with a real big problem. Recently I've lost all my data due to a RAID problem and had to use a full system image backup I was able to make before the crash. Here's the catch: I use a Core2Quad with 2 SATA drives on RAID 0 and Vista X64 ultimate. I have the windows installation DVD. Since my backup is on a USB HDD I plug it in, windows system restore finds the backup image. However, when it should start to copy the files a error message appears saying I can't restore my backup because it was made on a X64 system and my computer is a X86 system. How come? Has my processor mutated or what? I really cound't find a way to bypass this and start the backup. Please, any suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Hi, my system set up is

Asus A8N-VM
AMD Athlon 64 3200 @ 2.27
WD raptor Sata1 36.7 gigs
500 watt PSU (can't remember name but name brand)

I'm experinceing random reboots (total system shutdown). This don't happen more than once or twice a day -> week. Now, when I think aobut my old motherboard Abit nf7-s2g I experinced the same thing on that board also but I was using a antec smart blu 350 watt PSU. On the old motherboard my Sata port number 2 was broke. Now on my new motherboard my Sata port 1 is broke. I related that to the total system power down but i would like more opinions on what is wrong. I'm also thinking it's my raptor but i don't know how a hard drive would fail without giving BSoD. My old OS was windows XP 32 updated to SP2 and my recent OS is Windows XP 64 full updated.

thanks in advance.

I have had the problem of XP Total Security 2011 effectively blocking me out of one of our XP laptops.

The following article comes the nearest that I've found to providing a solution that the layman can use:

http://computersplace.net/virus/how-do-i-get-rid-of-xp-total-security-2011.html

However, though the above may work for some users, unfortunately it didn’t for me, though a modified version does appear to have worked successfully.

I had already manual inserted the registration number into XP Total Security 2011, as suggested at the following link:

http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-xp-total-security-2011.html

I was still unable to run System Restore in Normal Mode, nor could I run the full HP Recovery process by pressing F11 during Startup.
Similarly in Safe Mode I was unable to run System Restore from My Computer – right click deactivated.
Restarting into Safe Mode, if I selected No, as opposed to Yes when confronted with the explanatory Dialogue, which is shown before loading Personal Settings in Safe Mode, then System Restore was successfully launched. I selected the most recently available Restore Point and ran it. This has allowed me back into the system, enabling me to launch Malwarebytes. The latter has successfully detected several infections. I also notice that, as Malwarebytes has begun to make progress, so Microsoft Security Essentials has also been able to identify a problem.

Hope this is of use to some other sufferers!

Answer:XP Total Security 2011 Prevents System Restore

I have manually disabled this scareware virus (or however you want to define it) half a dozen times, although after disabling it I scanned the computer with Malwarebites and Superantispyware.

If you have this virus, your computer will act as if it's possessed and you will be denied access to your Task Manager. Just shut down the computer and restart it. The virus lurks in the system Startup and only takes seconds to load following a reboot (do not restart in Safe Mode). As soon as Windows has loaded enough for you to access your Start Menu, click Run, type in msconfig and click OK. Once in the System Configuration Utility, select Startup (you will only have seconds to do this and it may take several attempts to get the timing right). Once you see the list of items in Startup, look for anything suspicious, particularly in the location C:\Documents and Settings. (I have always made it a habit to keep a list of the items in my Startup. The easiest way to do this is to create a screenshot. Just bring up the list of Startup items in the Configuration Utility and press the Print Screen key. Then open a new Word document, paste the image there and print it out for future reference. Note: you will need to do this each time you add a program to your Startup items.) After unchecking the suspicious item, click OK. If you unselected the correct item, your computer should boot normally. Then I suggest emptying your System Restore history. To do this, click Start, click Control P... Read more

I don't know what's going on. Any way to fix this?

The 'puter came with Windows 7, so I started my thread here.

On advice from a Trusted Advisor, I have deemed it a requirement that I reinstall the whole shooting match (re post: Home>Forums>Software & Hardware>Hardware> On Toshiba satellite IE11 freezes, video gets garbled. The other thing is that since I was told by a Moderator (re post: Home>Forums>Operating Systems>Windows 8>Solved Reinstall Windows 8 Will I be able to upgrade to 8.1? "that laptop has a very weak CPU so it doesn't take much to slow the system down. I've had this total freeze problem for months, but it just happens occasionally, where the keyboard and trackpad just become totally unresponsive, task manager won't come up, CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing, the screen is still on, just frozen, it won't even sleep when I close the lid. This is a HP dv2600 with Vista HP 32 bit SP1, all the latest drivers installed inc nvidia 185.

I've looked in the event viewer after rebooting each time it happens, but can't see anything other than reports of the last shutdown being unexpected (from me holding the power button down).

Everything else works fine, I've run Avira premium for over a year on a standard user account, so I doubt its a virus, as that says everything is clean, as does AdAware.

I've tried 'reliability and performance monitor' too, but that won't work - "Internet Explorer cannot download, the system cannot find the file specified" is the error message I get there.

So I'm a bit stumped really, any ideas?

Hello. You have an active rootkit on your machine. With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team. Please read the information about getting started. After you have followed the steps in that guide, I would like you to start a new thread HERE and include a link to this thread. It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. The HJT team is very busy, so it could be several days before you receive a reply. But rest assured, help is on the way!Due to the nature of this infection it is likely that you will be unable to run traditional scanning utilities or run a full scan with RootRepeal as directed in the Preparation Guide linked above. If this is the case, you should still create your new thread in the HJT forum, but instead of DDS and full RootRepeal logs you should post your partial RootRepeal log (the one you just generated for me), as well as a log generated by this special utility. Note that the utility takes some time to run, so don't worry if it appears that nothing is happening.Sorry I couldn't do more for you here; they'll be able to help in HJT.~Blade

Hi there,

Can any one help me, which one is the best Software/Utility for total system-backup ( OS, HDD partition, everything)??? Bcoz my child and internet viruses cause my PC always get some problem, then I had to install all the softwares, OS & restore data from my back up....it kills long time.

So pls advice me whih one is the best tool for system snapshot or image or system back-up to DVD or DVDs.

Sahid.

Answer:What is the best Software/Utility for total system-backup ( OS, HDD partition, )???

Many use Acronis True Image Home or Paragon Drive Backup. But the "best" is the one that has the features you want.

Backing up to another drive, internal or external, is a much better idea than DVD's. DVD's are slow and inconvenient, meaning that you will be less likely to keep backups current, while with extra drives, the backups can be made automatically.

Free Drive Cloners/Imagers:

EaseUs Disk Copy (Copies disks or partitions)
XXClone
CloneZilla GParted LiveCD (Complete partitioning and drive imaging/restoration tools)
CloneZilla
Partition Saving
PCI CloneMaxx
Drive Image XML
HDClone
DriveClonerXP
Self-Image
copyr.dma (Copies disk with bad sectors for recovery)

Commercial Apps:

O&O DiskImage
Acronis True Image Home
EAZ-FIX Professional and Easy Image
Drive Snapshot
Keriver Image
Avanquest Copy Commander
Paragon Drive Backup
NovaBackup
R-Drive Image
Norton Ghost
HDClone Pro or Enterprise
Terabyte Image for Windows
Terabyte Image for DOS (can directly access FAT, FAT32, and NTFS partitions)

I've been having a problem with playing back video files recently. The issue has seemed to appeared randomly for my whole computer system has worked fine for months before. My issue is this...

When I watch a video file, I usually use Windows Media Player, but the same problem has occurred with WinAmp as well, during the course of the movie the video will suddenly freeze and the audio will cut out. While the video is frozen the audio will stay muted for a few seconds and then come back with a constant stuttering sound like a badly skipping CD. The even bigger problem here is that when this freeze occurs it locks up the entire operating system. I cannot move my mouse, no keyboard commands respond, nothing. Everything hangs. I have to reboot by using my computer's reset button or turning off the power and then back on.

As I mentioned this has been a recent issue in the last two months or so and prior to the onset of the problem I never had any troubles watching videos. Usually I can solve any problem I come across, but this one fails me and I haven't found anyone else with the same issue.

For more technical information I have Windows XP Professional, all current Windows updates, an ASUS A8V motherboard, an AMD Athalon 3200 processor, a NVIDIA 5200FX 256mb graphics card, a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 24 bit sound card, 1GB RAM, a DVD-R/RW burner, another CD burner, one 160GB SATA drive, two IDE drives 250GB and 80GB. Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS.  If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

Answer:Sony Vaio System & Hard Drive Total Failure

I don't have all the answers but let me start with Windows XP. I'm guessing you have never installed Windows XP on an SATA hard drive before. If you are starting a business, you should get up to speed on this. First, before you "downgrade" from Vista to XP you should make sure the laptop has XP compatible drivers available otherwise you will not be able to get all the hardware features to work. If this laptop doesn't appear in Sony's website, you will have trouble finding the appropriate drivers if they even exist and there is a possibility they don't. Check Sony's other national websites. If the drivers don't exist, don't bother to try to install XP.

Windows XP will not recognize most SATA hard drives unless you install SATA drivers at the F6 prompt near the beginning of the Windows installation process. Unfortunately, this requires the use of a now obsolete floppy drive that modern laptops do not come with. Another method is to create a slipstream disk that combines your XP installation CD with the SATA/RAID drivers and install XP from that. Do a web search for instructions on how to do so. Another possibility is to change the hard drive controller mode from AHCI to IDE mode if your BIOS has that option. It might not.

That said, if you are trying to install XP merely for testing purposes, I understand but if not, you should reinstall Vista or move up to Windows 7. Once again, you will need Windows Vista or Wind... Read more

There is no master BIOS password. That would largely defeat the purpose of BIOS passwords.

You might try the procedure to reset just the Power On Password at the bottom of this support site page for ThinkPads.

The manuals for your G570 are here.

Hope this helps!

When my browsers began moving slow someone suggested a total backup or a System Image to restore if things went south.

Can these things happen without a seperate hard drive in hand?
Online storage of operating programs and files?

Talk to me like I'm 5.

Is this over kill since I still use my laptop every day?

BTW - This is windows 8 on a hp laptop about 1 year old bought at Walmart. ( I live a long ways from every where)

Thanks for your time Runnoft

Answer:All browsers operating slowly, suggested total System Image?

I think that you are asking if you can make a backup image to your (only) hard drive. If so, the answer is 'yes.' However, if you are just now getting around to planning for disaster recovery you should also consider how you will recover if the hard drive becomes totally unusable and you have to replace it.

By the way, why haven't you upgraded to Windows 8.1?

Hi there, The hard drive in my IdeaCentre Q Series 150 failed last week.  I purchased an SSD for a replacement.  When installing Windows 7 back on the SSD, I get an error when installing with Disk 2 saying Lenovo Total Recovery - Operating System installation error.  Is there something in the BIOS that needs to be changed?  What else could I look at? Thanks,Ryan.

If you don't have the time to read the details you could skip the details below and just give me advice on these questions:

1. Can an Online Scan Cause Temporary Total Operating System Failure?
2. Can a hard drive have a major failure causing your computer not to be able to boot up and then an hour or two later start working normally again?
3. Can any other piece of hardware (for example, a memory chip) fail causing loss of boot up capability for the computer as a whole, but then that hardware starts to work again normally an hour or two later?

The details>>>

I used to go to forums like this when I was totally incompetent, but stopped after I became much more able to handle the Windows XP system (and on getting all software to work right). But something happened to my computer today that is so bizarre that I thought it necessary to see if anyone has ever heard of this at a tech forum.

I?ll give you the sequence of events:

1. Overnight I ran the Microsoft Windows Live One Care Safety Scanner (which is a free online scan). One interesting thing about this particular scan is that it is technically the most wide ranging scanner you can run with one click. You can have it scan for malware, registry junk and errors, open ports, whether any of your discs need defragment, and probably other stuff I can?t think of at the moment. You can do all this with just one click. The address is: Microsoft Windows LiveOneCare Safety Scanner
So I ran this ove... Read more

Answer:Can an Online Scan Cause Temporary Total Operating System Failure?

Hi

The scanner could have indeed caused your trouble. Microsoft and a lot of other software companies have a habit of taking liberties with computers without disclosing everything they do, and this is one of the many reasons why I dislike them thinking they can do that.

Since it recommended a defrag, it's quite possible that it unmounted the drives (without permission, of course), and your computer wasn't able to mount the system drive upon reboot (remember, reboot does NOT equal shutdown/power on). Having the computer off for awhile could have allowed the drives to reset somehow, though I can't figure out exactly what process could have happened there.

The other possibility is it's something unrelated to the scanner. A fan or heatsink could be clogged with dust that normally doesn't generate enough heat to be noticed, but running overnight with computer activity caused an overheating issue, and allowing the computer to be off and cool down let it start up without issue. This could also explain why the USB drive wasn't recognized upon the initial successful boot... data could have been corrupted somehow in the shutdown process.

My theories aside, I've seen strange things happen with computers as well, and always love a good story.

The worst experience I had was a hard drive with malware outside of the partition... the only "format" that cleared it out (which I only realized after trying to format with Windows install disks... Read more

My laptop has been fine up until yesterday when it started freezing randomly. It seems to freeze more when I have games and skype running, but has also frozen from things like youtube videos. Ive even had the pc lock up when im doing nothing but sitting on desktop. I have yet to get a Blue screen and the pc goes back to normal after anywhere from 20 seconds to a minute. I did a memory test at boot, GPU stress test and did a CHKDSK on C drive. All came back with zero issues found. When my pc locks up my event viewer and reliability monitor often do not log the event. When things are logged I get Video hardware error Problem Event Name: LiveKernelEvent OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 BCcode117. I've updated my nvidia driver and the freezes continued to happen. Im not sure the root of the problem is the video card though. I wonder if the error logged is simply an effect of the random lock ups rather than the cause. I've done multiple virus scans with malware bytes and have found nothing. Everything was working fine just a day ago. please help. windows 7 64 bit asus g72g gpu nvida geforce 260m cpu intel core 2 duo @253 GHZ Would finding a way to update the bios fix this? Im on the verge of reformatting ( really dont want to), but decided to come here first thank you for the help guys

Hello,
I cannot understand Spanish but it looks good. To really improve your system security you should look at Kaspersky's Application Control settings, that's were you can do the most work, here is a guide to help you - How to setup Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 for Maximum Protection (Guide) - it's for KIS 2016, but it should work for 2017 as well!
