Help! My laptop is going crazy! Whenever I click on a text box to type something characters automatically are entered, messing up my words and then they just keep typing themselves. Also the scroll, fn button keeps turning itself on without me touching it.
Obviously, I am not typing this post from that computer - or it would look like this

Is this a virus? How do I get rid of it??
Thanks in advance to any info anyone can give me.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hello,
Is it just one or two keys that are being repeated? if so, there is possibly something sticking them down.
Do you have a replacement keyboard to test?
When I am typing I have text characters turn black or whole lines of text turn black. This happens on all sorts of websites and occasionally within programs themselves. I also have issues where text disappears in Browser tabs. I have been trying to figure exactly the cause of this, but I am not having any luck. I notice this with both Firefox and Chrome. I am attaching a screen grab for reference and any system update have been completed. Thank youKevin

You are typing on a laptop's keyboard and do not realize that your thumb or wrist is hitting the touch pad and moving the cursor.
Can we customize a key so that when pressed it will type several characters?
I would use that function to quickly enter my ?user name? or email address when accessing internet pages that require filling such fields plus the Password.
Thank you for any help.

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.
If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.
Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.
If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.
As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)
Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?
Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.
I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Lee

Hardware workaround: external USB keyboard!
I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.
After a good coffee spill, mopped rinsed and wiped away from a veteran Cherry keyboard, the same double key standards applied. Fortunately this keyboard can be dismantled to the point where separate laminations could be thoroughly dried. But then a veteran like you would notice the wet splash ...... wouldn't you???

1 more repliesHi. I use gedit as editor in my Linux systems (SUSE and Fedora); there I find that I can't type in accented characters like I used to do in Windows.
In the text editor in Windows, even using an English keyboard configuration, I could type in accented characters by entering a combination of Alt+<ASCIIcode>, for example Alt+130 would type in the accented 'e' character; this sequence doesn't work in Linux.
Any suggestions on how to solve the problem ?

I have found that my Yoga 900 will regularly insert two characters when I have only hit a key once. I might type "stop" (4 keystrokes) but I find the word "stopp" has been entered. This is not a problem with one key, it happens on lots of keys, as shown in the video:The problem with duplicate characters It seems to happen most if you type the key "gently", so the characters you press with pinkies and ring fingers are more likely to exhibit the problem, but the video shows this is happens on any key -- it is not a problem with just certain keys. I am getting a new laptop because of an issue with the Yoga 900 waking from sleep when picked it up:(My problem with the Yoga waking when I pick it up) I'll see if this new issue is a problem on the replacement Yoga. I've had the same issue. It doesn't happen often. Just rarely enough that I thought I might be imagining it!
3 more repliesHi, hoping someone here can help me...
Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).
Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.
Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.
Any ideas?
Have you installed drivers for an external Keyboard or Mouse? (for example Logitech or Microsoft)
If you boot into MSDOS, does it still drop characters? You can download a DOS bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com

I have a brand new Satellite C50-A-1CK which is perfect for my needs EXCEPT I continually get double characters appearing on screen when typing which is:
A. VERY frustrating
B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.

Have checked for firmware updates but none available.

Hi
I hope that someone can help you and me on this!
I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.
Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.
I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.
Really frustrating
Hi guys i have a 3 weeks old mechanical keyboard, so practically is new, and after a while i realised that sometimes, randomly, 2 or more characters are being typed instead of 1.
I would like to tell me please if you think it is something to do with my pc or windows, or it is the keyboard's fault and i should have it replaced.
Hi try the keyboard on another computer or try another keyboard on your computer that should tell you if it's the keyboard or the computer.

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

What you can do is insert a comment.
Outline the word in the document, then click on Insert, Comment.
A comment box will appear at the bottom, type in what you want, then click Close. The outlined word will know have intials after it, and if you hover the mouse over it, a comment box with whatevr you yped will appear above the word. You can double-click the initials to change the comment text.

When I create a basic table in Ms Powerpoint 2003 with 2 colums/2 rows, some letters are sometimes spaced properly and sometimes not:
For ie, the word "Settlement" in the attached powerpoint document -> The 1st time Settlement is typed, there is no issue
at all. But the 2nd time it is typed, the letter <t> and the letter <l> are squizzed together. Then the 3rd time it is typed, it is fine. Same issue occurs with other words (for ie the word <test> may be fine the 1st time it is typed, then you type it a 2nd time, you get that issue of the letters <s> and <t> squizzed together.
See the attachments (they are the screenshots of the issue)
Troubleshoot:

17 more repliesSuddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.
For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!
So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.
I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.
I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.
Can anybody help?
Thanks

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

when type a, types a/k. when typing k, types a/k, many of the keys typing three letters after a single key is pressed.
There are a mix of ideas here:http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-...Do not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Do NOT check any box you see about removing the software. The above is not the usual uninstall, it just disengages the software from the hardware. When you restart the computer it will find your keyboard as new hardware then re-install the software from the supplied drivers. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

HI, and welcome to TSG...

Good luck..
HiJust a little problem, I was trying to send an email message and I wanted to add a letter inside brackets i.e. (a) or (b). When I did this it creates a symbol of a moon or some other symbol. Yes I'm not joking, how can I stop this? Regards
I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

Hi,
As stated above in the questionnaire, my system was sluggish and I ran my PCMatic scan which would stop running about 40% through the scan. I ran Malwarebytes (free) with no issues found. Removed PCMatic and installed AVG (free) which found some issues and cleaned them up but performace wasn't improved much. My keyboard then began to act quirky by characters not appearing or the cursor jumping around or nothing will happen but the "system busy wheel" pops up for a few seconds before characters appear on the screen.
I came back to you guys because TwinHeadedEagle was so effective at helping me with my desktop 18 mos ago that I was hoping for help.

Hello,
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.
Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.
Any ideas?
For some reason, there always seem to be a second delay on the keys on the keyboard, including the numeric keypad. Many times, either a character was skipped or the character showed up twice.
Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.
When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.
I am very careful with the laptop as I am sure there was no spill.
Any comment is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Hi
Try a BIOS update.

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.
Solved......I went to Control Panel > Languages and saw Chinese had appeared after my default English. No idea why, it just had. So I highlighted and pressed the option to Remove.

Have you performed a full scan for malware or virus's with a good Antivirus and Malwarebytes? An annoyance program ( malware or gag program ) could be crafted to set window priority so that taking away the priority from where you are at with a window that is say far off in the corner off the screen from view etc.My thoughts are that something like this is stealing the focus on you. There are a bunch of programs out there that a friend could even add to your system to drive you crazy etc such as drunken mouse etc where you try to select stuff and it is not very cooperative etc. So if anyone else uses this system check with them to see if they are playing a gag on you etc.If the Window you are in though fades and it says instead that the program is no longer responding then its a totally different issue than a gag program etc. Do you get any program is no longer responding issues?

I subscribe to "Best of PC World" newsletter, which is sent out via e-mail. On virtually every e-mail, I see characters that seem to indicate that my system can't read what's in the text. Example: "Androida€™s next update will reportedly fix Lollipopa€™s memory leak."
This occurs on both my PC and my laptop (the OS in both is Win 7 Home Premium), and on my wife's VERY old XP-SP3 laptop. The 'a€™' appears to be a substitution for a simple apostrophe ('). Good Lord; all that for an apostrophe??
How can I fix this issue?
I am running XP Pro on a Thinkpad R50 and after being attacked by some kind of malware or virus, which disabled taskmgr, all drives, start menu, etc., essentially closing off all normal avenues for fixing the problem, I have arrived at the following point, where I am now helpless:
I can boot into XP, although not into Safe Mode, and when I do, all text is displayed using a special character set. The only area where normal text is displayed is in the C: Prompt and in TweakUI. So, while I have run Spybot S&D and installed Webroot Spy Sweeper, I cannot perform a scan, since I cannot read the menu selections(not sure this would help anyway).
I have read some posts about copying the Fonts Folder contents from another computer, which I tried using a thumb drive and the C: Prompt, but I received an "Access Denied" message for several of the files. I assume this is because they are in use.
I will say that, I would like to simply wipe the drive and do a complete install, but the IBM Access function which allows me to restore the computer to its original state does not come up when I press my IBM Access button and, of course, I do not have install disks since this machine is supposed to have the original contents partitioned away for these situations.
I think if I can repair this font problem and establish a connection with the Lenovo site, I should be able to restore the machine to original.
Any thoughts?

4 more repliesHello all.I am looking for a text editor that I can throw my users into that I can tell it to wrap all lines to 78 characters during entry. It's doesn't have to be fancy, Notepad is working right now, but when the users exit the document I truncate the lines to 78 characters to store them in the application.Any help would be appreciated.Ken
Not that I'm aware of, but if you are familiar with vb you could always make a text program that limits the user to 78 characters and allows them to save to a txt file.
4 more repliesI have posted help on this topic before, but I can see that my ability to describe what my problem has been was not very successful.Over the past 20 years I have had this problem almost a dozen times and in between the instances that this problem occurs, I have always forgotten how to solve this problem other than to start a new document.I don't know how at the end of the document that I am currently editing has changed, but for some reason when I am editing text, the document will allow me to add additional text at the cost of loosing one character ahead of where I am editing. This is a problem as I do not want to re type the sentence/paragraph.How can I resolve this and is there a name for this so that if I ever have a problem I might be able to remember what this edit glitch is called?

I don't know if you can change the word count to character count in the Status Bar, but see if this helps.
Select the text you want the character count for (Select All for the entire doc).
Click on the Word Count in the Status Bar.
It pops up this info in Word 2010:
I have text that is typed between () to be blue and if text that is typed between {} to be purple and all other text would be black in a range of cells.I'm sure it's done under conditional formatinng but I don't know how.
A few assumptions were made here:1 - You used the phrase "range of cells". I assumed that the range is Column A. I'm probably wrong, but as written, that is where the code will look for the data.2 - There are mulitple shades of blues and purples that can be chosen. I chose ColorIndex 5 as the Blue and ColorIndex 29 as the Purple. I can show you a quick way to determine the ColorIndex numbers for some other colors if you need me to.3 - I assume that you do not have any instances of a set of parentheses contained within a set of braces or vice-versus. If you do, you may see inconsistant results. Let me know if that is an issue. With that said, I belive that this code will accomplish your goal.

Parsing text log messages that differ on the last character
Hi
I'm sure this is a failing in my grasp of regex but testing with the .NET Regular Expression Tester isn't getting me anywhere.
I want to differentiate text log lines based on the last set of characters. Suppose my log file looks like this -
2016-08-01 06:22:09 SYNC: Set board to 1 second pulse
2016-08-01 06:27:01 SYNC: Sent a time at message with: Mon Aug 01 09:27:05 2016
Based on the OPN Configuration Guide for Text Log Adapter v2, I think my parser should look something like below; I have removed references to other "categories" of messages, leaving only the "SYNC" type.

EntryInfo { Tag = "SYNC:", Regex = @"\sSYNC:\s" } : EventHeader

string Category = "SYNC";
string Msg = "";

3 more repliesI have forgotten the simple procedure that is used to embed special characters in a text message. It involves using the backslash followed by the three digit representation of the ASCII character. Perhaps the Esc key is also involved, but I don't remember.
Can anyone advise what the procedure is?

Hold the "alt" key and type the three digit number. The number for each character can be found by going to START, ACCESSORIES, CHARACTER MAP. Click on the character you want and the Alt+XXX shows at the bottom of the window.
In Word you can also go to INSERT, SYMBOL and make your selection.

3 more repliesHello everyone
Can insert more than 255 character in Text field ? .
Yes you can use more that 255 characters in a text file.
What version of Access are you using?. I am using Access 2013 & below is a copy from the help files that may help you. In older versions of Access you would use a Memo for long text, but Access 2013 now calls it Long Text.
The Memo data type is now called “Long Text”
In earlier versions of Access, we used the Memo data type to store large amounts of text, and the Text data type to store shorter strings (up to 255 characters). In Access 2013, these two data types have been renamed “Long Text” and “Short Text” respectively, and they have different properties and size limits depending on whether you’re using a desktop database or an Access App. Here are the details:
Text fields in desktop databases (.accdb)
Long Text In .accdb files, the Long Text field works the same as the Memo field of old. That is, it can store up to about a gigabyte of text, even though controls on forms and reports can only display the first 64,000 characters. You can set Long Text fields to display Rich Text, which includes formatting like bold and underline.
Short Text In .accdb files, the Short Text field works the same as the Text field in earlier versions. It stores up to 255 characters.
I still can't figure out this Windows 8 search function ...
I have a bunch of text files and I need to search for the following string for example within the files:

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to search for this string?
It seems like Windows 8 ignores just about all non-alphanumeric characters when searching.
If I can't search within files for a simple string like the above I'm screwed!
I have this problem which occurred this past few days. I don't recall changing any character encoding settings.

When you copy these characters and paste it another field, it will be normal english again.

Can you check your character settings to make sure that you are set to Times New Roman. Also are you getting re-directed to different sites if you go to google?

This is for a school assignment. I need to find out the total number of characters plus carriage return (or enter) in a text document. This is easy, if I just copy and paste it into Word and look at the word count. It's number of characters with spaces + number of lines - 1.
Next I need to find number of unique characters including carriage return (or enter) in the text document. It is a very long text, 167,121 characters. I'm not gonna count them.
I was wondering if there was a free computer program that did that. I'm using a mac.
I think you need to do your own homework.
Closing thread.
When typing in any Microsoft program, unwanted characters are being inserted, usually after I've typed a character and then moved the cursor to another position. Mostly what I'm seeing are the two characters b4 or b6. I can't make heads or tails of it. Has anyone seen this, or have a solution?
I realize these aren't the characters you are seeing, but does sound like formatting. See if these few quick fixes help:

Hello,
We have a report that was generated from a WinXP machine, using the Generic / Text Only
printer driver. It is sent to a file by using FILE: as the port. When examining the
contents of the report, it is noticed that some graphics characters are embedded in
different places throughout the document. On closer examination they are Carriage Return
(CR) and Line Feed (LF) followed by spaces. We have tried to examine this file for
a pattern of these characters.
What might be causing this behavior? How can it be made so that these characters do
not appear in the file?
Is there another similar printer driver in WinXP that has just generic ASCII text output?
Thanks
Mike
CR and LF characters are both standard ASCII characters, but they are non-printing characters. They are the "End Of Line" character sequence used by Windows, without which your text file would consist of one single long line.
If your text editor is showing them (many text editors have that option) then you should probably look through the settings for your editor to turn off display of line endings.
My husband's desktop icons are jiggling around on the screen and then disappearing. Following the instructions on the closed thread and I ran Panda Active Scan and then HijackThis (under Delbard) but when I attempted to post them (with the extra.txt attached) I received the above error message. What do I do now? Thanks.
Attach the Panda log as well. That should cut it down to size.

Issue: All Chinese characters I try to view in text editors are being displayed as squares.
I can view the file in a browser (Chrome) and the Chinese characters appear correctly, but in text editors they are squares.
Background: I recently installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1 along with many other updates. I had not been installing any updates (yeah I know) but I wanted to be able to edit files with Chinese characters in them, so I installed all the available updates.
After I restarted the first time, I was delighted to see that the characters which were squares before were now legible Chinese characters. However, when I restarted again, the characters were back to squares.
I checked for updates and saw a few optional updates were available. I installed them, restarted, and the characters were back to being legible. I restarted again and the characters returned to being squares.
Now there are no available updates and the characters still display as squares. This happens no matter what text editor I use, be it Notepad++, Sublime Text, or plain old Notepad. The file is encoded with UTF-8 (it's been that way during both when I could see the characters and when I couldn't). It also happens no matter what font I use.
How can I fix this issue?

Hi
I have a suspicion that in ASCII text outputs to a file, the CR and LF codes are printed with no option to disable as the basic driver has no options.
I played around a bit with some other print drivers (on install choose the printer as Print to File) and found none that would give any readable text from a file, I did re-install the MS generic Print to File driver and looked at the properties, and while this worked for me don't know if it will for you, was that I had an option for Fonts, so I changed to United States 437 font and the resulting file when opened in notepad had no CR or LF marks.
Now this maybe due to me running Windows 7, have not had a chance to test in WinXP yet, but check out the Printer Preferences.
I have a question. I've already looked online but I can't find a way to do this. Basically, what I want to do is take a select part of a document and change it (like the Replace feature of Notepad), but instead of replacing it with specific text, I want to change it to numbers, in consecutive order. Here's what I mean (let's pretend that I want to replace L):
Original Text
Sample TEXT L
Sample TEXT L
Sample TEXT L
...
Sample TEXT L
Replaced Text
Sample TEXT 1
Sample TEXT 2
Sample TEXT 3
...
Sample TEXT 100
And help with this question would be appreciated! Thanks!
I'm using Windows, by the way.
Is this a Word document you're trying to do this in? You may have better luck using Excel. Both programs have the find /replace feature but Excel will allow you to easily number the text by putting Sample TEXT 1 in Excel cell A,1 then move your cursor to the bottom right of that cell until it becomes a bold + sign. Then just hold your left mouse button and drag down as far as you want to go.
The results will look like this.

'Print to File' was never intended to be opened and read like a document. It is a file intended to be used by the printer driver that created it. It contains information about margins, spacing, and other items that a printer needs to print the document.

A user is using Office97 Word , when she is typing a document and needs to go back and make changes or correct mistakes , the text she is tring to type overwrites the existing text and won't allow for spaces etc... I remember this sorta thing happening back in days I used wordperfect but do not know how to fix it. It doesn't happen all the time, and doesn't seem to matter if it's an new or existing document. I'm thinking it might be some sort of text or template setting.
Can someone please explain why word does this and how to fix this annoying typing problem, thanks in advance.
At the bottom of the Word screen see if there is a small box with "ovr" in it and is it clearly visable (not dimmed). If so, double click it and see if it will dim. This toggles from insert to overtype mode.
I have Vista on my computer. When I am typing text it will suddenly jump to another section of the page and enter part of something I have typed. It will even enter it in the same font that previous text in that area has used. How can I fix that?
First step is to rule out malware. Run a full scan on your system with both your anti virus utility and MalwareBytes.

More repliesHi , Is there any way to type text onto my photos in photoshop without changing them from jpeg format into "psd " or whatever the format is called that is super huge? I want to keep them as jpegs
hi, when you open a jpeg into Photoshop it uncompresses. So a 2 mb file may open up to 11 mb. Photoshop needs to work on the incompressed image. As you see adding text creates a layer, however once you save the image (as a jpeg) it will revert to a smaller size.
Word of warning, resaving jpeg's can have terrible effects, so make sure you save at the highest quality (lowest compression) . BUT BUT BUT remember to 'save as' another file name, so that your original is not changed just in case you change your mind.

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. Welcome to the Forums.
What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

When using the standard Toshiba S3 video drivers for Windows XP I seem to be experiencing problems with the display when the resolution is set to 1024 x 768 or lower.
Any text on the screen is fuzzy / weird quality.
If I select a higher resolution the screen is fine with crisp / sharp text.
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Simon
Don?t panic! This is not a malfunction or a problem?
The native resolution of your internal screen should be higher as 1024x768 therefore you should leave the notebook running with the highest possible resolution.
This issue was discussed already in this forum. You should check this:

When saving a notepad (.txt) file, I'm seeing the 'Notepad' prompt saying 'C:\blah, blah, blah This file contains characters in Unicode format which will be lost if you save this file as an ANSI encoded text file' blah, blah, blah.
What Googling this didn't tell me, nor did tediously looking at every character in the file (not finding anything not on my keyboard), I went ahead and saved the file (regardless of the prompt) and still every time I tried 'control + s', clicked 'file>save' or even 'file>save as', the same prompt appeared.
I was about ready to give up, when it crossed my mind. I'd copy-pasted a 'date created' from one of my text files properties general tab. And when I re-read the saved file's characters for the pasted 'date created', I saw a "?" mark ahead of the day date ('?Monday').
I removed the darned thing and saved the document, and I think it again prompted me of that darned Unicode thing.
I re-read the pasted characters again and found yet another "?" mark, this time ahead of yet another following segment of the pasted 'date created'. After a few times of deleting the "?" mark, the file finally saved w/o the darned prompt.
I think I've run across this maybe a half dozen times over the years and finally surmised and resolved this issue, ie; Windows usually never does and even Google sometimes doesn't tell us crap like this.

Well go right ahead and fire up Linux and just see for yourself. Linux comes fully loaded with magic fairies that fix every single problem you encounter. And just like Windows everything is Unicode in Linux! So when you copy and paste into a ANSI document it deletes things, YAY!
Btw...why didn't you just save the file as Unicode (UTF-8) when doing save as? Then Notepad wouldn't have to worry about messing up those Unicode "characters". You get that message by-the-way because it is only software, it cannot read your mind and it doesn't know you do not want those Unicode "characters".
My Word files are suddenly going haywire. Periodically I will be scrolling through a document, and where there was once text, there is now strange characters. Chunks of text have disappeared.
If I close the file and reopen, the file seems to revert to where it was with no loss. But it freaks me out.
Was also working with some tables in Word and the program on its own started adding new rows and wouldn't stop. Had to shut down.
Software and Adware are up to date. Haven't see this with other programs, but haven't tested it much.
Already tried removing and reinstalling Word. Haven't see same prob when opening same docs on other computers.

I'm looking for a free Windows Text editor, other than XEmacs, that will transpose the last 2 characters typed when I press Control-t. I don't want to swap characters on either side of the cursor. It should be like this:
I try to type the work "this" and get a typo and end up with "thsi" with the cursor or caret to the right of the 'i' so I hit Control-t and then I have "this" with the caret to the right of the 's' ready to keep on typing.
For me this is my most frequent typo. But I find very few Windows editors have that transpose function. Seems like it should be standard like deleting a line of text.
Anyone know of any?
edit: I guess the ones that have the feature will swap the 2 characters as I've described if they are last on the line.. which is fine. The idea is when you realize you transposed the last 2 characters, hit Control-t and keep on typing. Seems like an obvious feature to me.
I can understand the feature being automated, but I've never heard of it being an assignable action, nor do I see the efficiency gain in typing Ctrl+t instead of just pressing Backspace x 3 and starting over...

This one is hard to describe, but I'll bet someone else has seen it. When I turned on my PC yesterday, Windows seems to start ok. The XP logo came up, but then a command window (square box with a blue top border) popped up with an unintelligible character in the title border, and another unintelligible character inside the box. The Close Window X in the upper right hand cornber would not close it and I could not use CRTL-ALT-DEL to stop it. The only option available is to select an OK button in the box which then seems to allow Windows to load properly.

1 more repliesHi everyone, for some reason my IE download window is showing funny characters that look like symbols and chinese words. I checked and my IE is not set to chinese and this came about suddenly.
Does anyone know the cause and solution? Thanks
Open your IE Options, under the General tab. Click on Languages. Make sure you don't have chinese in there.
Hope this is the right place for this post.
My cousin has a computer that is making trouble. Sometimes when you're typing there is a delay of 20 seconds or more before the letters come on the screen. For a fast typer it's really bad, sometimes it takes so long you can almost type a whole paragraph before it appears. And it only seems to do it in Internet Explorer, as far as I can tell. Possibly Firefox, too. Doesn't do it in a word processor. Any ideas?
Here's the computer specs:
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz (or right around there) processor
512MB RAM
30GB HD plenty of free space
Windows XP SP2 all latest updates
Keyboard is a nice Logitech (wired)
Oh, and the computer has AVG, Windows Defender, Spybot, Ad-Aware. None of those programs bring up any malware.
