Windows Essentials scan

Question: Windows Essentials scan

I have had Windows 7 since it first came out, and I have done several scans with programmes like Malware Bytes and Spybot.
but I have never done a scan with Essentials before. so I thought Id' try it. I started it on thur 6th 5 30 pm approx. and it is still running
today Mon 10th 9 0am.is this normal or should I shut it down. I must add that it is still running it doesn't' appear to be stuck.
your advise would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Windows Essentials scan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows Essentials scan

That is far too long for a scan - 1-3 hours is the sort of time frame I would expect depending upon how many files are on the system.

Do you have any other antivirus product installed?  If you do then it needs to be disabled before you run another antivirus product, otherwise you will get conflicts between the two which will slow everything down.

This seemed to begin after watching a video on xhamster that, while watching, read "video is being absorbed" and then the page redirected from the video to a page that said something about the fbi looking at...and I didn't finish before closing the window. Well, I know I haven't done anything to warrant the fbi's attention. Since then, I occasionally get a redirect from the same site that says "having vista problems? clean your pc here" or something to that effect and I do the same - close the window. Since that day, Microsoft Security Essentials will not complete a full scan. The quick scan works and reports that it found nothing. These are some of the message I have gotten during a full scan:

I have an E-Machine. Microsoft Security Essentials has been running on it for over a year with a weekly scan. Yesterday, the little castle icon began showing orange indicating I had not done a scan recently. But when I check the scan it says it was last scanned on Wednesday. Nevertheless, I manually did a full scan yesterday and the warning went away. But this morning when I booted the machine it initially showed green with the check mark but within 5 minutes again began displaying orange with exclamation mark and warning that a scan had not been done in a while and my computer is at risk.

Can anyone advise me as to what to do? Thanks.

I have a Dell 8300 running XP. Today, when I went to run my McAfee scan feature, it would not run. Putting cursor on the shield icon did not pull up the command menu as it usually does. I also have Microsoft Essentials. I also tried that with the same results. Several days ago I had a Trojan (Win32/orsam!rts) which I couldn't get rid of. After that, I had someone hack into my e-mail (Yahoo) account and send out a phishing e-mail. I changed PWs and things seemed to clear up. The Trojan seemed to vanish. Now the McAfee and Essentials won't work. Fortunately, I have a laptop to get me through. I've secured the desktop where my problems seem to be.

Hello, I use Microsoft Security Essentials for my Windows XP system, and I was wondering, if you scheduled a scan, and your computer was off, what would it do? Would it scan the next time you turn on your computer? Or would it not scan at all? Thank you!

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials scheduled scan

It would depend on the settings, but it will let you know by the icon turning orange in your notification bar if it requires your attention.
This will happen if it hasn't scanned for a while. Personally I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you believe you have a virus then do a full scan to see the results.

Hey all,

A problem with my MSE has come up about a month ago on my main PC, running Win7 64-bit.

The problem is, more than once a day, the MSE tray icon turns orange and a message says "You haven't run a scan in a while. Please run a quick scan now.". This message comes up very often, even after I run the scan, and restart my PC. I have the scheduled scan disabled on all my computers, but this problem only happens on this one. I have tried re-installing MSE, but nothing seems to help.

I use MSE on all my computers, a combination of XP and 7, and have never had this issue on anything else. I love MSE and would prefer not to switch to another anti-virus.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it !

Hello,
My Microsoft security essentials is failing on this folder:
C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-v..e-filters-tvdigital_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18672_none_dbb394ae574689ac

No errors were detected up to the point of the failure.
These failures were on two separate scans. I ran dskchk before the second scan. No errors were found but it didn't seem to help.
When I run a custom scan on those two folders it works OK and reports no errors.
When I first installed security essentials it did do a full scan successfully.

I read this:
Microsoft Security Essentials Always Stops in Winxsx Folder dated 27 Aug 2013
I don't think it is a bad disk because custom scan worked and dskchk was OK.

I am looking for help toward completing a full scan.
Thanks

Just wondered, how often should a full scan with MSE or other anti-virus be run?

Is once a week enough?

I also use Malware bytes free and Microsoft Safety Scanner at times...

Thanks...
Jerry

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials, full scan?

Hey JerryB52,

I personally have MSE set to full scan once a week but it's all down to your activity on your machine.
If you feel that you're doing things which may cause your machine to become infected then you may want to scan more often than once a week.

Being secure is nothing to be ashamed of, so do whatever you need to feel secure.

Running Windows Vista Home Edition and MSE for years with no problems. However, for the last month or so MSE keeps saying that I'm potentially unprotected and a scan needs doing. This is now happening every other day. Is it worthwhile removing it and re downloading?

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials always wanting to scan.

Interesting question, because I have just downloaded MSE on W7.
If I recall rightly, there are tick boxes within MSE that requires an input of required actions like regular scan checks or downloads etc. Perhaps one of these boxes have become unticked or similar?.

Hi Folks,

I've had Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) loaded for 1.5 months on my Dell Inspriron (with 64-bit Windows7, 4GB RAM, 2.80 GHz AMD Athlon II X2 240). It's set to automatically scan (in Quick Scan Mode) every day. However, I like to manually run it in Full Scan Mode every few weeks "just in case." But the last two times I ran it in Full Scan, it took 14-16 hours. The last scan just took over 16 hours and scanned 2,294,820 items. My questions are:

1) Is this time (over 16 hours) excessive for Full Scan Mode? Despite deleting my temp internet files & history recently, at least the last 6-8 hours were spent checking literally hundreds of thousands (if not more) temp internet files in this location: C:\Users\Gary\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows/TemporaryInternetFiles.

2) When I view my temp internet files (before deleting), I don't see anything near that number of files - maybe just a couple hundred or one thousand at most. Is there a hidden directory somewhere with all these extra temp internet files that I could erase to speed things up in Full Scan Mode?

3) Upon finishing a FullScan today, it removed two threat files: Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0094.DL and Trojan:Java/Rowindal.G. However, it doesn't seem to find such threats in QuickScan Mode when it runs automatically each day. According to my MSE History log, the only files removed so far were removed during the two manual Full Scans (4/25/... Read more

I'm running MS Security Essentials, and after a bit too long without a scan (weeks, probably), I ran a quick-scan, and quickly remembered why I don't run it often: It takes 2-3 hours. My hardware isn't stellar - 4gm RAM and a 2.1GHZ processor - but I don't think that's the cause. Does anyone know why this would be the case?

Hi There
Forum Virgin here!

My machine is freezing during full scan using Microsoft security essentials and while doing a backup.
I was trying to do a backup to ensure that if I had a failure while fixing the security essentials that I could restore it.

I am not getting any errors, I have to restart the machine every time and I'm sure that this is not good for the laptop.

There doesn't seem to be any information on the event viewer to document the error.
I am able to do a quick scan but I'm sure that the problem is deeper.

I have rum spyware programs to check the system and all seems fine. I am at a loss here.

Answer:Freeze - MS Security Essentials Full Scan and during Backup

I would like to know what notebook model you have exactly?

Another question: does the system freezes only running the Microsoft security essentials or did you notice the system problems running other tools and utilities?

I cannot say for sure what cause this: it can be an system/software related problem and in such case it would be recommended to refresh/reinstall the system again.
At the other hand it could be an hardware problem. For example HDD issue?

Hi, after recently (finally) updating my XP pro from service pack 2 to service pack 3, things went bad... firefox suddenly wouldnt open at all, and Internet Explorer (8) would start to open, but then it's window would close all by itself a few seconds later. I ran Maleware Bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials in both regular and safe modes,(both programs were able to download updates, so the internet connection was there to some extent) and everything came up clean. after a few days, i gave in and did a system restore to a few weeks previous time (before i tried to upgrade to service pack 3). However, still no IE or Firefox. I then realized that i was able to use an old "AOL Explorer" browser, and used that to download Google Chrome. I then used Google Chrome to download a new version of Internet Explorer (8), and now i seem to have a working Internet Explorer again. (Firefox still doesnt work, but havent tried to re-download it yet)
My main concern now is that Microsoft Security Essentials wont complete a "Full Scan." (Malware Bytes will complete and finds nothing wrong). I even downloaded/installed a fresh version of Microsoft Security Essentials and it does the same thing... quick scan finishes and finds nothing, yet a full scan run for a few hours and then has an error message " cannot scan computer because service is not running. restart service manually or restart ... I am running MSE on Windows 7 and have been using it for some time. Recently, however, the scan fails and hangs when it runs after approx 25-30 mins and requires the PC to be restarted before it begins to function properly again - for example, once the scan fails, I cannot complete any Chrome downloads until the PC restarts. How can I make MSE run normally again? I have uninstalled Malwarebytes and tried sweeping for remnants of any other antivirus software on my PC (Malwarebytes and MSE used to run perfectly together so I don't think it is the issue).

Many thanks,
Vishmister

Hi All.

I recently moved from Avast to MSE and I was wondering if there was a way to shift the Scan with MSE context menu item to the Shift+Right Click menu instead. I did a little googling and tried the "extended" registry key but that didn't seem to work (unless I put it in the wrong place).

Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer:Move "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials" to Shift+Right Click

Welcome to Seven Forums BaconCatBug. You should be able to add items to the extended menu, but I don't know if it will also reside in the standard menu.

How to Add Any Application Shortcut to Windows Explorer?s Context Menu

You might also see if the entry is listed via Shell Menu View. If so, the program also has an extended view (File> Set extended view) you can use to add it there.

Hi Folks, Sorry for another question so soon after my previous post yesterday...I just got my computer back from the repair shop a few days ago. They removed a virus. They installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and told me that only one antivirus programs should be active on my computer to avoid potential conflicts. However, I just noticed that they left McAfee Security Scan Plus loaded, since it popped up and started scanning a few hours ago.My question is: Is there any reason why they would leave McAfee Security Scan Plus loaded in addition to loading Microsoft Security Essentials, especially when they told me only one AV program should be active? Can those two programs peacefully coexist, or should I delete one of them?Thank you again for your expertise,Best regardsGary

Answer:Can MS Security Essentials and McAfee Security Scan Plus Peacefully Coexist?

You can keep the 2 antivirus but one of the two AVs' real time scan should be turn off or it will cause conflits

I have both Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Security Essentials (incl. Firewall, Auto Updates and VIRUS PROTECTION) running on my old pc. Since they both have a virus protection, do I need both? It seems that this pc is always downloading updates and slows the pc terribly.Wellgo

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Security Essentials

"Windows Security Essentials"Are you sure that is the exact name? Maybe I've missed something but I've never heard of it.It is not good to have two Anti-Virus programs running in real time, for the reason you gave. They tend to "check each other" and cause slow downs.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hey all.

I was running a full scan on my Win8 system using Defender.  After 15 minutes, scan was three-quarters completed with no problems, so  I left the computer for five minutes.  When I returned, Defender had switched over to a Quick Scan in order to finish up.

No threats found, either by Defender or by MBam, which I ran afterwards.  But is it unusual for Defender to switch from Full to Quick scan mid-operations?

Answer:Windows Defender Full Scan Switches Over To Quick Scan

I never heard of that happening before so I'm not sure how it occurred. There are three types of scans offered by Windows 8/10 Defender and most other anti-virus/anti-malware programs:Quick Scan only checks the areas of your computer most likely to contain malware...the most prevalent and common places where malware typically hides. The length of time for performing a Quick scan will vary but it generally takes about 15-30 minutes so they can be performed daily.Full Scan is much more comprehensive since it scans the entire hard drive (all folders/files) which can number in the thousands. The length of time for performing a Full scan will also vary but because it is so comprehensive, this type of scan can take several hours. Most Full Scans can be scheduled to run late at night when not using the computer so you can perform a weekly scan without having to monitor it.Custom Scan allows the user to select any files and folders on the hard drive to be scanned. In most cases when performing routine security checks, only a Quick Scan is needed since it checks the areas of your computer most likely to contain malware...the most prevalent and common places where malware typically hides. A Full scan is generally recommended only for heavily infected systems.

Hi All

Trying Windows Defender to see if I can get used to it and how it affects performance and such, but after each scan popups and says items skipped during scan, my exclusions for Secondlife game, which is required to have it run properly.

Should I just ignore that?

Games I play regularly are
Battlefield 4
American truck Simualtor
Secondlife

sites visit regularly is here, neowin.net, guru3d at times, dslreports at times, local news, and local newspaper, adblocked enabled in Edge.

previously for the last few years used Avast Free, but kinda feeling like every month of program updates, and then more bugs, then another update is getting time consuming to trouble shoot, though i'll probably have to leave it running on Mom's PC since she does banking, and other Windows 7 PC not sure on using MSE on that one, I might use it

We are using Windows Fax and Scan (Version 6.1 Build 7601: Service Pack 1) -- its the version included with our Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit client OS

I just installed a scanner at a sleep lab , scanner works flawlessly. There are multiple sleep techs that will log into the one computer with the scanner (so in short multiple user profiles) and scan patient RXs.  Problem is the Sleep Manager wants
the scans to automatically save to a central location so no matter what tech logs in their scans will save to the same location as everyone else.

The key is AUTOMATIC saving.

So that's the background info -- the heart of the issue ... it appears a feature that Windows Fax and Scan offers is not working.

If you go into Fax and Scan there's an option in tools -> Scan Routing.  If you read about the feature its supposed to AUTOMATICALLY save to the network folder indicated, its not doing that.

So I check the box for "save to network folder" (don't know the exact wording)

(I'm using xxx's because I don't want to publically announced the real share location) \\xxx\xxxxx\xxxxx\Neuromuscular.

That is 100% a valid and working share name -- been in use for years many people save to it....Windows Fax and Scan says "Not valid Network Share"

So someone said just use \\server\share

Ok I create a folder on my computer let's call it Computer1 and name it sharefolder. I share it and give "everyone" read/write acc... Read more

Hi,
My Computer is a Lenovo G50 (windows 8.1) and my Printer/Scanner is a HP Deskjet F4500 (F4580) All ? in ? one Series. The deskjet is connected wirelessly to my computer and prints documents OK but will not scan documents using ?Windows Fax and Scan?.
With my old computer I was able to scan documents.
Can anyone help.

Answer:Printer will not scan documents using Windows Fax & Scan

Hello,
Make sure that Printer Spooler service in Services window (run services.msc command to get this) is working correctly on your Windows 8.1. Try restarting it and see if that helps.
Hope this helps, Good luck

Answer:Windows shuts down when I run AVG scan or MBAM scan

Correction: I can now run AVG Free Edition all the way through, because the "scan log was repaired", however, it doesn't find any viruses, as I think it should.Malwarebytes' AntiMalware still won't update, so I found and downloaded the latest mbam-rules.exe, which contained the latest update and I installed it. I then tried to perform a scan, it again quit halfway through and restarted my computer.I downloaded SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and it found:Adware.Tracking Cookie (35 detected items)Rootkit.Mailer/Gen (3 detected items)Trojan.Fake-Alert/Trace (1 detected item)Unclassified.Unknown Origin (1 detected item)I quarantined/removed all of these.MBAM still won't update, but I haven't yet tried a new scan.EDIT: MBAM still won't update, a new scan ran all the way through and found 95 infected objects. 90 Registry Keys, 3 Registry Items, and 2 Files Infected. I can now open regedit!I don't think I have too much of a problem anymore, aside from the inability to update MBAM, there aren't any other apparent problems, though I'm afraid I'm still infected in some way or another. :/ I'm attaching my MBAM log.I believe you can delete this thread, unless somebody can recommend me doing something else to further protect my system. I am looking for help with Vista and Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

I am working on an implementation of the wsd scan protocol on a scanner.

I have a documentation for the wsd scan protocol for the scanner side, but I do not have any documentation for the windows side, i.e., for the Vista/Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

In particular, I would like to know whether it is possible to change the timeout value for the RetrieveImage message. This message times out if no scan data is received in 30secs.
However, for higher resolutions scanner calibration can take longer than 30secs. For this reason I am not able to scan and retrieve the image at 1200dpi.

Other problems I have:

1. Often Windows Fax and Scan freezes. I have to reboot the PC.
2. Often Stop/Start of the WIA service is not relible. I have to reboot the PC.
4. WSD Scan discovery seems to be unrelible. Often when trying to scan a document using Fax and Scan I get a message saying that there is no scanner configured. However, at sturtup the scanner always sends a correct discovery message.

I will be thankful for any help.

Greetings all,

In connection with my job, I have several insurance companies asking me to send scanned documents in Portable Document Format (PDF). My Brother Printer Control Center Fax-Scan software is not yet compatible with Windows10, even in Windows7 compatibility mode. The Windows10 Fax & Scan program does not list PDF as a scan-to file conversion option. Only jpeg, bitmap, txt, etc..

Is there a way to tweak or add-on something to Windows Fax & Scan to make it scan documents into PDF format? Thank-you for any guidance with this.

-Allen

Answer:Windows Fax & Scan: How to Scan Documents to PDF format?

Adobe's Acrobat DC sees that option if you are presently caught in a bind and need a fast solution. Scan to PDF, convert JPEG or TIFF to PDF Adobe Acrobat DC

At least that is a reputable program compared to the numbers of freebies seen on the web for 7, 8, 8.1, and now even Windows 10! The WikiHow page for this can be looked over at 4 Ways to Scan Documents Into PDF - wikiHow

Besides those two non MS methods there is the Scan app for Windows first seen for 8.1 and works for 10 as well. Scan app for Windows: FAQ - Windows Help

The Scan app is also pointed to with similar inquiries at the MS Answers site since that will save what you scan with a printer in any number of file formats including image files which can also later be converted to PDF. Another How-To reference that applies to 10 can be seen at Scan a document or photo with Windows Fax and Scan

Greetings,

My McAfee Real-Time Scan will not remain enabled. When I try to run either Quick Scan or Full Scan, an error message comes up, telling me to return to the McAfee Internet Security Home and to try to run the scan again.

I have followed their instructions for re-enabling the Real-Time Scan to the best of my abilities, by trying to restart the McShield Service, and by running the oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility that they instructed me to download. The oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility will not run.

I have contacted McAfee and they have told me that it is a problem with Windows Update. I have contacted Microsoft and told them that as well, but they seem to be trying to rule out any other possible cause, than what McAfee says is the actual cause of the problem, thereby dragging this out even longer.

Microsoft is supposed to be getting back to me again tomorrow, but any other help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Almost every time I do quick scan and got nothing and I think it is good. However, I just read online, it says that when quick scan does not find anything then you do deep scan. It confuses me, since it means I should do deep scan all the time. ?

Answer:quick scan vs deep scan/full scan ( antivirus )

the 1000$ question is
which anti-virus
ON windows defender and malwarebytes and many others only a quick scan is necessary
The converse of what you have read is usually the case eg. You do a quick scan and only if that finds something should you then need to follow it with a full scan
For instance a threat scan on Malwarebytes paid for edition or the scan on the free version will scan up to 99% of the system
A full scan also scans the system restore points and other unusual places to detect, or at least try to detect, all possible traces of infection.
As I said it depends on the AV and to some extent the OS which I presume is not Windows 2000 as indeed commented on by my colleague Cookiegal in another of your topics
Also, it appears you're running Windows 7 and if you don't still have your Windows 2000 computer you should visit your profile and change that information so that it's current which makes it easier to help you in some casesClick to expand...

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

Download Windows 10 Client Connector Update for Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as it now available at Microsoft.

Windows Server Essentials Connector is software that helps you connect your PC or Mac client to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience server role enabled. It also enables and manages key client-side functionality of Windows Server Essentials Experience. On a PC, it provides client backup, a tray icon and the Launchpad, the Dashboard for management of remote servers, and a VPN profile with the capability of auto-dialing and monitoring client health from the server side. On a Mac, it provides health monitoring and the Launchpad.

Question: Windows Essentials

i'm trying to uninstall all versions of Windows Live Essentials, so that I can install Windows Essentials 2009 which allows forwarding of embedded photos in emails. I have already uninstalled Windows Essentials 2012. No other Windows Essentials programs are listed in my installed programs directory. However every time I try to install Windows Essentials 2009, I get an error message that tells me that Essentials 2009 cannot be installed because a later version is already installed. But, as I already said no versions show up in my istalled program directory. How do I get rid of all versions so that I can reinstall Windows Live Essentials 2009.

Answer:Windows Essentials

Do a search for Windows Live programs. Look in C:\Program Files (x86), C:\Program Files, C:\Program Files\Common Files,C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming. Also same place under All Users. Delete all instances of each of these programs.
Messenger, Photo Gallery and Movie Maker, Windows Live Mesh, Messenger Companion, Mail, Writer, Family Safety.
You may need to go into the registry and also remove these programs by searching for them in the Edit/Find.

I have tried to manually update the MS Sec Essentials database - it will not run the update.
Windows Updates won't run as it says the services aren't running - BITS & Windows update services both say they are running under Services.

I also tried the TDSS rootkiller repair - (have attached the log)
This is a DHCP system - there are no manual DNS entries (I have checked).
There are no extranesous entries in the hosts file.

Hello

please can you help me?

I run Windows 8.1 and have installed Windows Live Essentials but the install seemed corrupted as I couldn't open the program. The error said that wldlog.dll, wldcore.dll, uxctl.dll were missing. I installed them back using Dll-Files Fixer but the program still didin't work.

I then tried to uninstall Windows Live Essentials with Revo Uninstaller but it said some files are missing. I tried forced uninstall but it failed too, it said some files are missing but didn't say which ones.

If I try opening Windows Live Mail it gives an error, it cannot find an entry point to msmail.dll

I want to completely remove Windows Live Essentials so that I can try a clean re installation but I cannot manage, I think some files are either missing or corrupted and whatever I try fails.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am trying to add Windows 10 clients to Windows Server essentials 2016. It seem that in order for the server to see the clients I must the clients join the server server Domain. (Currently they are in a workgroup).

It looks like one has to change the Windows10 clients to access the WSE-2016 DNS. So in windows 10 I go to networks, bring up the adaptor setting. Bring up "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IvP4) and instead of "Obtain the DNS address automatically" change it to always get the DNS address on the WSE-2016 (found with ipconfig).
Then within Windows I use ?System?, ?about?, and Join the server DOMAIN. It now works. The client can now see the Server domain.
I can then see the Server files and the server can see the Windows 10 shared files.
There are still problems however.
When I reboot the Windows 10 client. I have a brand new user screen with only some of my original desktop icons showing. Do I have to essentially rebuild up everything on my desktop again!
Question: Is there not a way to have my original desktop appear when I am joined to the Domain.
Second, since there will be times when the server is off I used the router static DNS IP address as the alternative address in the above dialog box of the Windows10 clients. Seems to work since the client can access the internet even with the WSE 2016 off.

Answer:Adding Windows 10 Clients to Windows Server Essentials 2016

When Windows client computers are not joined to a domain they use the local SAM database to authenticate to the client computer. When the computer is domain joined you are using an AD user account to log into the computer. These accounts are going to have different SIDs as well as local profiles on the system. If you log into the computer with an account that has local admin access, you can simply move or copy the data from the local user account folder into the domain account user folder. The user folders inherit permissions from the root C:\Users\<username> so they should automatically gain access to the newly copied data.

Hi

Having upgraded to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, I have discovered that I have limited control of my options, in Windows Live Mail (Essentials 2012 version)!

Prior to the upgrade, and with the 2011 version of WLM, I was able, through the Options facility to select certain actions, such as:

"Send/Receive on Start up!
and
Delete messages from the deleted folder on close down!

The Options Tab, which allowed these choices, was on the tool bar, at the top of the window, just below, and just to the left of the Close Window X!

This facility does not appear on the current 2012 version!

I would appreciate any advice on this matter

At the moment, I have to manually select Send/Receive, and manually delete old messages

Hi Theo, When first installing W8 I noticed the 'Tile' for Windows Live Mail in 'all apps'. Didn't take much notice as don't use Live Mail which in W7 & W8 was an integral part of Messenger. However to use Messenger you had to create a Live Mail/Hotmail a/c.
Well having become more settled with what I need in W8 I thought I'd have a look at the 'Windows Live Mail' and so pinned the tile to Start & Desktop. I just opened it today and found it has the new UI of the Ribbon Type which makes it very flexible and perhaps more attractive to future use by me. I also noticed it had the 'Options' you require, which you will find on the Toolbar when you create a new message. Hope this helps.

i tried to do the on-line Panda scan a few times, once my dial-up connection disconnected it, and i couldnt get it back, and I tried it 2 more times and it stalled about 3/4 of the way thru, even tho i was still connected. When i do Spybot S&D scan it stalls midway too, several times, i have to keep moving my mouse around for a while to get it to start again. Why do u think this keeps happening on my computer?( Virus scan was negative, and i deleted some adware with a scan i did a day before.) I know the Panda scan used Actixe X which i had to download to do the scan. Should i delete it now? What would it look like and where would it be on the computer.?
I have an old Dell OptiPlex GX1 Pentium 2 with 350 MHZ, with 256 RAM and WIN ME O.S. with 10 G. storage with a slow dial-up connection. Thank in advance. ZUZU2

I am confused, so asking here.  Is Windows Security Essentials on Windows 10 an obsolete name for what is now called Windows Defender?  Could or should someone download and install MSE onto a Windows 10 computer as an alternative to other commercial Security & Protection Anti-Infection products?  If a person does this, then has he two forms of either MSE, or of W.Defender and they being redundant will interfere with each other?

I do NOT understand after seeing and reading these:

Answer:What's the truth about Windows Defender and Windows Security Essentials?

I just found this article:

If I correctly understand, Windows 10 includes "Windows Defender", which is the new name for what was called "Microsoft Security Essentials".  MSE includes antivirus and anti-malware.

Does this mean that My new Windows 10 computer having Windows Defender running and up-to-date, and having Windows Firewall running, is fully protected?  No need for installing a commercial or retail Security and Protection program?

Windows Defender will not run and MSE is a not listed program on the machine.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/14210/security-essentials-download says the following.
Windows Defender is built into the latest versions of Windows and helps guard your PC against viruses and other malware.

For a PC running an older version of Windows 7, you can download Microsoft Security Essentials for the low, low price of free.
So how to find out if a Windows 7 is an older version.  I have supposed Windows 7 OS gets updated all the time, so they should always be the latest.  Can we presume they are always the newest version?

Hello everyone...
Love you, hope you can help me,
I have been using Windows Live Essentials for a long time, until i started to have issues with it (many of them), so i have moved on to alternative software. (For e-mails i use strictly IncrediMail now, happy with it).
One of the issues was with Family Safety app - i installed it, used it, moved on to Norton Parental Control, the problem is every time i removed Family safety from my live account it kept coming back (just like in old horror movies), instead of Jason X i got Family Safety X, how bout Family Safety VS Norton Parental Control for a nice horror flick?
So i had to msconfig and just disable it there 9 not really a solution)
My major issue is that i can not uninstall Windows Live Essentials, and i have tried everything. Could not do it from control panel add remove programs, could not do it with the original install file, there is just no such option.

What should i do, i really want to get rid of it.

Thanks a lot in advance...

Hi,

I try installing Windows Essentials and it wont install! This came up for 1 hour

I got bored and cancelled the process and now the windows all user install service agent wont work, I cant log onto and internet connection won't come to my apps I have install.

Do I have to refresh my computer or anything else?

Thanks

Al

Answer:Help with WIndows Essentials 2012

A refresh would be your easiest option. Remember that a refresh will remove any installed apps that were not pre-installed on the system and your data files will land in C:\Windows.old. Since that's the case, I like to suggest that afterwards, you install the apps you life, then create a new image using the "recimg" command line tool. That way your "refresh" will refresh with your apps installed and data intact.

Microsoft has released Windows Essentials 2012 which includes new versions of Movie Maker and Photo Gallery for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Details about the new features in Movie Maker and Photo Gallery are available in the Windows Experience Blog, Introducing the New Windows Photo Gallery and Movie Maker.
Windows Essentials 2012 includes the new SkyDrive for Windows app as well as Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Family Safety, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Messenger, Outlook Connector Pack and Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker. Windows Live Mesh and SkyDrive
If you install Windows Essentials 2012, it is important to note that if you have Windows Live Mesh installed, it will automatically be removed if you install the new Movie Maker or Photo Gallery. In its place Microsoft SkyDrive will be installed. Microsoft has specified that if the new Movie Maker and/or Photo Gallery in Windows Essentials 2012 are installed, you can not have Windows Live Mesh on the same PC.
In order to sync folders from the cloud to all of your PCs, it will then be necessary to install SkyDrive on all of your PCs or Macs. (Windows Live Mesh continues to be available from the Download Center: Windows Live Essentials.)

I think that Microsoft doing away with Windows Live Essentials such as mail and messenger is wrong, they are basically trying to FORCE people who HATE skype (such as myself) to use it and outlook and I much prefer Live Mail and Messenger and now that I can't have either, I have no way to communicate with my family and friends except facebook which half of them don't even use and they HATE skype as much as I do! I cannot find Essentials or Movie Maker anywhere on my PC, no icon, nothing.
Where does it put it?

Answer:Windows 8 and downloaded Essentials

Perhaps it's installed but hiding from you - try this simple way to search for it:
Make sure you're on the Start Screen (with all the big coloured tiles) then simply start typing movie maker. Hopefully the program will appear at the top. If you want you can right-click it then choose "Pin to Start" and/or "Pin to Taskbar" so it's immediately available for the next time.

I have uninstalled windows essentials from my windows 7. I tried re-installing it but it showed that windows essentials is already installed. I searched everywhere on my pc but it does not appear nor its components.
I tried to install it through windows updats ( as optional) the same happened. It says that installation is done but nothing appears. When \i tried to choose components to install from windows essentials, all components appear as installed.

What can I do in this case? I tried everything but none worked.

Answer:Installing Windows Essentials

Download and clean your HD with ccleaner. This will remove all remanants of the prior install. Untick all registry cleaning.

See if you can install in safe mode. If not just install

If this does not work, try to go back with System Restore to before the first install.

Does anyone know if Microsoft is going to replace Windows Live Essentials as I heard on a cnet message forum administrator that Microsoft will no longer offer that suite or programs?

I used to use Windows Live Writer to blog but I needed more features, especially with uploading a set of pictures to a gallery in a post as if it were being uploaded to WordPress' gallery themselves.

Windows Live Mail and Live Writer have been awesome and since Windows Live Messenger was replaced by Skype, is it possible for Microsoft to replace Live Writer, Live Mail and other Live products?

I heard a while back that MS was dropping the "Live" branding on their products and I think they were re branding a lot of stuff with the "MSN" brand. Time will tell.

When thinking about it will i still get that shitty essential package again with a standalone version of msn messenger, reason why i'm saying this is because a friend of mine recently installed msn messenger and he got the essential package and what annoys me is why is microsoft bundling programs together...

This is probably a naive question, so apologies in advance.

I am being offered the optional update "Windows Live Essentials" and I see that "Mail" is included. I am aware that it enables one to "get multiple email accounts in one program" (quoting from the Microsoft blurb.) So, I was just wondering, would I still be able to use Windows Mail (in Vista) or would it become "Live Mail?" ....

Have others here downloaded the whole kit and kaboodle included in "Essentials" I'd be interested in your general opinions of it, if you don't mind sharing please.

Thanks very much for reading

This is a Toshiba laptop with XP and SP 3 The computer did have Windows Defender installed. But since I thought it was an old program I un-installed it and then installed Microsoft Security essentials. But every time I turned off the computer and then on again.Security Essentials was turned off and there was no way to turn it on again, except by reinstalling it again. That's why I thought a virus or something might have caused this.

Also the DVD drive runs every 3 minutes just for a few seconds, maybe 3 or ,4 as long as the computer is on. I did run Malware Bytes and everything comes up clean. I'm not sure if the two things are related. But for now I installed AVG, which does not get turned off. But the DVD drive still does the same. Can someone figure this out?
