this computer is worse than mine

Question: this computer is worse than mine

Hey gang,
Since you all helped me with my pc, I am hoping you are willing to take a crack at my father-in-law's pc, I'm gonna explain the problem to ya here, because i'm getting nowhere fast. It won't let me into the "my computer" section to remove any unwanted software. It took me 6 times to be able to get to this website. I cannot (for some strange reason) find HighjackThis to download. And at the moment it is refusing to download Adaware. This is something that needs to be taken care of immediately. Poor man also has unwanted popups, I'm sure he's been infected with spyware. We need your help ASAP.
Please send me the info so i can download HighjackThis,

Preferred Solution: this computer is worse than mine

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: this computer is worse than mine

Ad-aware and Spybot are both a little too big, but HijackThis can fit on, and in fact be run from, a floppy disk. Copy HJT from your machine to a floppy, take it to your FIL's machine and run it. Copy the log back onto to floppy, take it back to your machine, and them post.

I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

Answer:My Computer - Getting Worse & Worse! Is there hope?

take the graphics card out and insert it back in firmly making sure it is sat properly in its slot. check the manufacturers websites for your motherboard and graphics card and see what the bios updates do, and see if they have any FAQ's to check if anyone else has been having similiar problems to you in terms of people who have the same motherboard or graphics card??

Email the manufacturer(s) for your motherboard company and graphics company.

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

Hopefully someone can help. I went to start my mate's computer the other morning and it switched itself off about 3 secs after powering up. I tried again but it would not post however the power remained on this time. There is no video signal at all but it is not the card as I tested it in another machine and it works perfectly.
I have reseated EVERYING, reset the cmos, removed the battery, changed the ram and even bought a new power supply. Everything on the board lights up as it should, the fans all spin but I cannot get a bios screen. I have pulled out all the drives and tried running it bare bones but still no post.
It is an ASUS P5N-E Motherboard with a dual core CPU not sure what model. The original PSU is a 650 watt Coolmaster, I replaced it with a brand new generic 400 watt PSU with no luck. The graphics card is a Gigabyte 9600 GT. Before I go buying another CPU is there anything else it could possibly be?
ANY help will be appreciated.

Answer:Computer will not post (not mine)

Ok I discovered it is not the CPU. I put it into another system and it posted fine. Last night I pulled the battery out again and left it till this morning. I put new ram in and booted up .. it posted for about 5 secs then powered off and now will not post again. I am really getting frustrated and would welcome any further advice.
I am thinking motherboard issue but cannot understand what would make it post briefly then power off again.

Hi Pted -

You've got a bit more than just the smitfraud variant going on.

Be sure you protected yourself against the WMF exploit. See the link in my signature to get patched if you have not.

Please download these additional files/programs. Do not run them unless instructed to do so.

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

*Note* Alternate download sites for smitrem...

Right-click and select Save Target As - save it to your desktop.

To use: Right-click and select....... Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"

CleanUp!.exe - Install

Ad-aware - install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware at for better scan results. One updated, and custom settings in place, Close Adaware.

Seems like a strange question maybe but heres a little info.

By brother recently needed a computer for his collage work so after saving enough money what we decided to do was give him my old one and buy a new one for me.

Anyway we now play together on some online games. but the thing is I have so many problems with performance while his runs very nicely.
For example we both play world of warcraft.

His game sits at a comfortable 30-50 FPS while mine drags at 10-20 FPS

Bear in mind the settings he uses are pretty much identical to mine and I have tested it.

Now for the specs.

Both running XP

My computer.(new)

Intel Pentium 4 3.20Ghz (2CPUs)
1024 MB RAM
Nvdia GeForce 7300GS 512MB

His computer.(Old)

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ , MMX, 3D Now ~2100 Ghz
1024 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT 128 MB

there is probably other specs that might effect performance just let me know and I will get them for you.

At the moment I feel like I have wasted alot of money on a poor machine if it cant keep up with my older one.

Recently I have been unable to access my 'My Computer' folder. Either the folder opens and when I click on a file it goes into 'not responding' mode OR the page opens with no drives listed. Any ideas anybody?

Answer:My Computer isn't mine anymore

Hi plzen

To rule out viruses, run an online Anti-Virus scan from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites
Allow them to clean/delete any spyware/malware or viruses/trojans they may find.
Make a note of any files flagged that were unable to be cleaned or deleted.

Download or verify you have the most recent versions of:
Ad-Aware SE 1.05
Spybot-S&D (ver. 1.3) and

Install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot-S&D and check each of them in turn for updates.

For Ad-Aware SE click on Full System Scan and deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Let Ad-Aware SE remove what it finds.
Run Spybot-S&D and have it fix what it finds marked in Red.

After running your online virus scans and running Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D,
close all programs and reboot to complete the removal process.

Let us know what you find and if the problem still persists.

I desperately need help.  It took hours to get on your site.  I finally got my verification email after 4 tries.
I have intruders all up in my computer.  I can't open some of the files.  When I go to the security tab to get permissions, there are these clever names like trusted installer, and Everyone, and about 13 others.  I ran a regedit and under users, I am not listed.  There are like 3 with long list of hyphenated names like S-1-15-25-, like that.  I have had to reset my pc about 3 times in the last 3 weeks.  I keep trying to take ownership of my files and when I start doing that whomever or whatever removes everything.
I see signs of remote access.  I even tried to follow the directions and start by backing my stuff up.  I tried going to the Cobian website, there was no way my laptop nor my desktop would let me in that website. I got all kinds of error messages, or that connection to the server was no available or that I wasn't connected to the internet.
I'm telling you, they even move my cursor sometimes or they do something that when I move my mouse  my cursor sticks and won't move and then it jumps.  When I try to save or even when I was creating my profile I couldn't put my cursor directly on save.  It's pretty serious.  This has been going on for months.  It started In my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop, so I go a new desktop in March, Dell Inspiron 660. i recently ran the network connection wizard and it informed me that it had detected an unnamed computer connected to mine, how is this possible when i have not allowed this

Answer:another computer connected to mine

There are 2 possible scenarios, neither good. Either someone hacked into your network and is now trying to hack into your computer, or someone already has possibly from the other side of the world. I would run some anti-virus programs to make sure no viruses are on your PC (Use Spybot Search and Destroy, Malawarebytes Anti-Malaware, and Ad-Adware, all are free), and disconnect from the internet when you start doing the scans (whether it is disconnecting from a Wi-Fi network, or unplugging the ethernet cable). Then tell us how things are looking after the scans.Ask and Answer. The way of learning.Dell Dimension 8300Intel Pentium 4 HT @ 3.20 GHz4 GB RAMNvidia Geforce FX5200

We have a router at home that's connected to a broadband Internet connection and it connects two Windows XP Professional computers including mine. Is it possible to access the files/folders/etc. of my computer through the 2nd computer (mine is "1st" supposedly)? Whenever I click on the other computer's "name" on my Network folder, there's a pop-up and it asks for a password. If my computer is clicked on (vice versa) in the 2nd computer, does it do the same thing? If so, how can I block access to my computer from the other computers connected to me via router/network? It's a bit urgent so any info/help would be great. Thank you!!!

I think I have accidentally let a computer have access to my own, I was trying to install some software when i noticed a Macbook Pro was in my network tab on the file explorer. When I click on the Macbook Pro it says that I need a password to access it. I had never seen it before until I tried to install the software. I keep getting windows open and close randomly that are clear and have no text. The window might stay in the task bar for a few seconds before closing and when I hover my mouse over it its called 'Genious'. Nothing happens if you click on it. I updated and ran my avast antivirus software and it says there aren't any viruses.

Good Morning,
I am having serious computer issues that I just cannot seem to fix.  No matter what, my "guy" or whatever it is, gets back into my system almost immediately after I think that I've finally resolved the issue (I've been fighting this for months now).  So I'm at wits end and have decided to get some help (I have 2 tech friends that cannot resolve it either, and they are good at their jobs). So, if anyone out there can help, I'm open to suggestions.   Here are two of my many issues:
I am the Administrator and only user of this computer, but do not have Administrator priveledges,
and I cannot seem to remove the Remote Desktop that is controlling my computer and changing my settings, uploading my files, and worse....
Again, any help would be great.  It's not urgent.  Everything worth stealing has been stolen, and I no longer enter vitals or sync this computer (2 destroyed smart phones later - gee, thanks!).
Thanks again!
ps-this emoticon is about where I'm at with all this, but I have invested too much time in this project.

Answer:My computer is no longer mine (although I'm the only user). ???

I bought a domain name at 1and1 and web hosting at last week, and have been able to change the DNS servers on the 1and1 domain to point to my hosting, which works as long as I'm not using my computer/internet connection!Prior to purchasing the hosting I made it redirect to my old site, and this is what is still happening when I access it at home. I have asked various people to check it out for me, and it seems that the problem is with either my computer(s) or maybe Telewest. What should appear at the moment is a page with some text on it saying something like "it's finally working" - but I can't remember what I typed exactly - something stupid along those lines! What I get is my old site with a logo & layout (just to test CSS and server side includes with, not really a site at all). I have tried deleting my temporary internet files, etc, but that hasn't helped. Maybe it's something to do with DNS and Telewest? Without knowing how DNS works exactly I can't explain what I mean though!Anyway, I would appreciate it if anyone could offer an explanation. Thanks in advance,Gaz

Answer:Site works on any computer but mine!

There is a chance, though I'm told they don't, that Telewest are using their own caching system of pages. Or it could be that they have their own DNS which is out of sync or causing problems.Do you know the IP address that your domain name resolves to? If so put it into your hosts file and see if that solves the problem for you.Apparently a DNS record has a TTL value (Time to Live) which can be set to something short or something long (funny that!) If it is set to 1 week (or greater) than it may take a while for that change to be fully reflected. Ideally if you are going to make frequent changes to DNS records you want a low TTL value.A good old Ctrl+F5 can work wonders even when you have deleted temp files and have set your browser up to check for a newer version of a page every time you visit a site.

We recently installed a netgear wireless router, and I was able to configure the netwok for all the computers in my house. However, my desktop is the only one that doesn't see any computers, and can not be accessed by any other computers. Also, if I hit view workgroup computers, it says my workgroup is inaccessible. How can i fix this?

Answer:Network is fine except for one computer...mine!

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Okay my sister is having some major issues with her comp so I am trying to relay whatever she gives to me onto you in hopes you may be able to help her system properties
microsoft windows xp
version 2002
pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.81 GHz
1.00GB of RAM

when she starts her comp up it has like this ms dos thing that goes off fast but it says C/windows/system32/chcfg.exe.
When she logs off it has a error popping up that says mediaacck.exe failed to start and thats all she can get of it before it closes.

It keeps changing her homepage and has serious issues with yahoo and everything to do with yahoo. She says that the dll files keep coming up as missing or no longer valid and she has been unable in all her attempts to find her windows folder. So I am asking you what is your opinion. Is there any hope for it, is it some kind of virus that will need to be reformatted or could it be adware problem that she can get rid of. She said something about aurora I am unaware of what that is so I am hoping someone out there can give me an idea of what to do next. I had her copy what was in her HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE folder to see if that might help with this situation. she came up with the following:

I just recently moved home, and comparing my computer to my fathers, it comes up very short:

His is an Intel P4 2.4
1 gig ram (dual pipeline enabled)
radeon 9800 (128 meg)
SB audigy

Mine is Intel P4 2.4
1 gig ram (NOT dual pipeline, but top of the line none the less)
radeon 9600 (256meg)
SB Live!

I hope thats enough info for a decent comparison

Playing the same game (say Halflife 2 or doom 3), hes getting decent frame rates at 1024X768 with medium to high graphics settings where as Im needing to be closer to 640X480 (doom 3) or 800X600 (halflife) with the settings at medium or LOW (and in fact, doom 3 on low with shadows on is averaging about 22 FPS). Im also noticing and absurdly high frame rate hit if i turn on shadows (say 10fps lower) is this normal for this setup?? Is there that big a diff between the 9800 and the 9600? Im really starting to get worried here!

Any input would be amazing!! thanks in advance!!!

Answer:Upon comparison to a similar computer, mine seems slow !!Help!!

Because I lack the knowledge about the current graphic card market I can only apply common sense and tell you that my Athlon XP 1800+ gets 10 frames or something in Doom 3 with those settings at 800*600, Radeon 8500LE and 256MB PC2100 RAM.
Probably you don't have good drivers or you didn't set the card settings correctly. And there are still more reasons that could lead to this like fragmented drives, bad placement of swap file and such.

Can I ask a couple of questions. I just set up a generic computer for my kids to play with (don't like them on mine at all). I would like them to access the internet from that. My questions are, what exactly do I need to buy to network them to my computer for the internet access. I have a cable modem on my Dell and use adelphia to get on line. There is already an ethernet connection on their computer. My last question is, if I network computers will they have access to my computer also? ( files, programs and the such, my little one likes the delete button). I don't know if it matters, I run XPsp2, the kids is an old computer with little hard drive and windows 98. Thank you.

Answer:Solved: Networking kids computer to mine

The quickest, easiest solution is to get a small broadband router. Assuming your modem has Ethernet then plug modem to router WAN port and connect the PCs to the router LAN ports. Obviously both PCs will need Ethernet cards (NICs). The router should be supplied with sufficient cabling to connect to power and the modem and, maybe even one client PC; so you might just need to get, in addition, 1 or 2 CAT5 straight-through Ethernet cables.

As to your last question. Users of the W98 PC will only see folders/files on the XP box if you actively make folders/files sharable on the XP box; so keep the kids out by not enabling sharing on any (all?) folders on the XP box.

The router will firewall your whole network (i.e. both PCs) but you might want to ensure you have good anti-virus software on the PCs. Personally I also run software firewalls on the PCs, in addition to the router HW firewall, and also having kids as users this has paid off several times for me now.

We bought our son a used computer today for $150. The computer is a Dell Dimension 2400? We gave him a Dell flat screen monitor The only problem I am having is I cannot change the screen resolution. I dont know a whole lot about computers, however, I do know that when you go to Display properties, you should be able to change the resolution by sliding the bar. However, the resolution is "stuck" at 640 X 480 and I cannot move it. Under the color quality, my only option is the medium 16 bit.

I went to Help and Support and it says to go to Settings, Advanced, then the Monitor tab and under that tab, I get the following:

Monitor, says it is the Default Monitor (I have connected 2 different monitors up and its the same for both monitors), the "Properties" button is gray and will not let me click on it for any other options.

Under Monitor Settings:
Under the Screen Refresh Rate: my only option is "Use hardware default settings"

Any Ideas on how to change the screen resolution? Its a Dell computer running Windows XP Professional. The people we bought it from said they haven't had it hooked up to the interent for about 2 years. I don't know if they have had it hooked up without using the internet or not in that time.:confused

Thank you so very much!!!

Answer:another strange computer issue...mine is the monitor

Looks like it needs the graphics drivers installed first (probably needs chipset drivers installed before that), visit the Dell Support site and fill in the details for the machine, download and install the chipset and graphics drivers (there may be more than one type of graphics card installed into that Dell range - best if you can get the Dell online and use the 'Scan my computer' option).

One of my many drive is the FreeAgent GoFlex Drive 1.5 TB pocket sized external drive - it works fine on every other computer but on mine it stopped working - actually when I plug it in to my computer it freezes my computer every time I plug it in however to unfreeze my computer all I have to do is unplug the drive (plug-in and unplug I mean connect and disconnect USB cable from my USB port on my computer).

I have a 700 watt Power supply and my other USB devices work just fine which includes all my other external hard drives - I did replace my Geforce 8800 GT grap[hics card with the Geforce GTx550 Ti graphics card.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:FreeAgent GoFlex Drive works on every computer but mine

Have you tried connecting it to a different USB port? It's possible that the port you are using is miswired and is putting out the wrong amount of voltage.

I have a linksys WMP110 running on a gigabyte M55SLIS4 motherboard every time i try to connect to a wireless connection with the card the OS reboots, But i took the card and installed it on my friend mother running the same release of windows 7 and it worked completely fine no reboot not at all and he ran it for more than a week

So can some help me out here probably tell me what they need to see why it reboots

Answer:Linksys WMP110 work on my friend computer but not mine

Update the chipset drivers for your motherboard and then install the latest wireless adapter driver too.

I see you have OCZ ram. Set the correct timings and Vdimm in the motherboard bios manually. Their website has this info for your RAM.

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

Test the HDD with the drive manufacturers disk tools (preferably using a different PC). Run the short and long tests. If either test fails or has errors, the drive is faulty.

Well this all happened after I accidentally clicked a "you have won a million dollars" pop up in the middle of a site. Every minute now my computer is getting worse and worse, Half of my desktop is filled with random programs now and more just keep coming. I've tried symantec antivirus, spybot S&D, and adaware, and nothing is working. I have been keeping up on windows updates as well so I can't imagine how things have gotten so screwed up in fifteen minutes. As a last resort I ran hijackthis and saved the log. Hopefully someone here can help me. Adaware will delete 220 objects then ill run it immediately after and 300 objects will be infected. I have no idea what's going on and I'm about to scream. My PC is having multiple issues, even after trying the R&R scans. Only SAS and Malwarebytes completed without any issues. The last scan, MGTools, ended with a blue screen. Combofix never started the scan portion, even after waiting 3 hours. Root Repeal seemed to finish, but came up with a message about an inaccessable memory block and then the computer shut down.

The current problems I'm having: Google redirect (IE); Hard drive errors (last one was right after power on); programs not opening over time; almost all files on computer are hidden; message about corrupt files in recycle bin (even though it's empty); volume doesn't work; some file on my desktop called "settings.dat" that was created today and, according to it's properties, opens with daemon tools pro.

These are the only logs I have. I'm not sure what the MGTools log will show after the blue screen incident. If there is any step that may seem like I missed it, trust me, I did everything I my PC would allow me to do in its current condition.

Answer:Need help! Computer going from bad to worse.

Also, Combofix started off by telling me that ESET antivirus was running. That can't be possible since I uninstalled it right before I started the R&R cleaning.

It started off with opening any sort of media application, like a video or a game, and after having it go for 2-3 minutes, the screen would hard-lock, a various assortment and array of colored pixels would sprawl across the screen, jumbling it and making it completely unreadable, and, if any sound was occuring at the time of the freeze, it would loop continuously in a most annoying fashion. I shut down the computer and restarted.

It then progressed into a much worse state where, upon start-up, the black screen (the computer is a Dell XPS 730, by the way. Graphics card being a Nvidia 9800 GT, with Intel Quad Core Q6600 processors, at 2.4GHz. The PC is two years old) with the big blue 'DELL' logo, would have flickering pixels scattered across the screen, being much more prominent than before, making the screen THAT MUCH more unreadable. There were also various colored 'smiley-face' icons at various spots across the screen (these appeared most-prominently when I attempted to open my BIOS menu to find some means of fixing this. The screen was riddled with them). I wondered if this was a hardware malfunction at this point, or some sort of virus. I wasn't sure why hardware malfunctioning would cause a large portion of the screwed-up pixelated garbage to be taunting smiley-face emotes. The pixelation of the screen was so bad, I could not even SEE the Microsoft-icon button to press and enter my password for login (OS is Windows Vista 32-bit). I had to shut-d... Read more

Your hard disk is only 3 GB? Are you sure?    Also, 256 is enough to slow a system down pretty well. What programs do you have running in the background while on the computer? Which antivirus protector do you have? Are you sure that you're virus free?Flame

A few days ago I noticed some odd things with my computer, it would start off with thing like me loading a Myspace page and the music player not loading etc, then progressively over the past few days its been getting worse and worse, to the point where I can only view my hotmail page just as I turn the comp on, but about 15 mins after its been turned on the page refuses to load, many links on websites wont load, MSN disconnects itself and wont reconnect and now my most recent issue of the internet disconnecting itself at times.

Usualy if a problems cropped up, Spybot or Adaware usually flushes it out, but neither of those programs when run normally, or in safe mode have done the job, Ive tried all I can think of and even my brother doesnt know whats wrong, and thats usually quite rare ; )

So I did some further research and have seen that some problems have been resolved via a Hijackthis log, which I will post a log for my computer in the hope that my problem can be resolved as my life is becoming much more difficult with me living through this machine nearly all of the time hehe.

So I have a lenovo sl500 laptop, that runs windows vista home basic.
I went to turn it on yesterday, and it did all the normal things.
It went to the thinkpad lenovo screen, then gave a windows progress bar at the bottom ( like it usually does ) gives the circular vista icon and sound, and then brings up the user login screen. I log on, it says welcome, and brings me to a black black screen. I have a mouse on screen that responds to movement, but not respond to right or left click. It stays here and doesn't load the home screen. I have run the memory test application from the start up. It said I had an error # 8603. I have found that this means CMOS checksum bad. I have run the setup bios utility, and set everything to manufacturer defaults. Still nothing. I hav checke the back up battery, and it meters at 3.1 v ( Which is good..) so. Do I have a bad motherboard, possibly a bad hard drive? Whoever can help it would be appreciated.

I built a computer 2 days ago (Tuesday) with the help of a guy I know. It has an ASUS P5N-D motherboard, an NVidia graphics card ( forgot the model, but has 512 Mb), a 1Tb seagate SATA hdd, forgot what the DVD-CD Burner was, an LG775 Dual-Core Intel Processor, 2x2 Gb of RAM, a 600W power supply, and 6 decent fans between it all (2 on the case, 1 on the power supply, a on the CPU, 1 on the motherboard, and 1 on the video card). When I installed xp SP3 and installed the drivers, the hdd was conflicting with the motherboard driver and the guy found a patch for the driver which fixed the problem. Last night though (Wednesday), I had been installing software all day long (such as photoshop, WoW, etc.). I was letting the WoW patches download (950 Mb), and a couple of other downloads finish over night, but I decided to make it sleep overnight. This morning however, It froze I guess mid-start and I had to restart it. I tried to start WoW and firefox and they would load in the task manager, but get nowhere (WoW was sitting at 76 b, and firefox at 3,260Kb). I restarted one more time, then they wouldn't load at all, I ran a scan with AVG 8.0 free, bu I had it shut down after it finished since I was gonna be gone all day. Now I can't find where it would save a log of the results, and it isn't even running now, background processes in the task manager won't even fully load. When I try to start ANY program now, it won't even start loading in the task manager. When I end a process... Read more

Hi !

What's the exact brand and model of the video card (nvidia is the chip maker, not the manufacturer) and what's the exact brand and model of the power supply ?

Enter the BIOS at startup (press del), locate the hardware monitor screen and give us the temps, fan speeds and voltages (+3.3, +5 and +12V) you'll see there.

Remove the 2 case fans and leave only one memory stick in the first DIMM slot (XP 32bit can't use 4GB anyway). See if it helps.

Long story made short. About a year ago my laptop crashed, I panicked and went to K-Mart and bought a Toshiba Satellite C55D, cheap laptop (400$) but I needed internet access that same day. Right outta the box I had issues, lots of lag and I have Charter high speed, no problems before. Computer just stops for like a minute at the time, Called Toshiba and the situation got worse. They said they didn't warranty the software which they claimed to be the problem, wanted me to pay 150$ for tech support on a brand new laptop. I refused and have struggled with this laptop ever since. I will never buy anything else made by Toshiba again. I have a AMD E1 Processor. Can't even watch Netflix some days. Can anyone help?

Just recently my computer has started to reboot itself with monotonous regularity. I am running XP on an 1800xp machine. It apears to happen after using programs like MS Publisher etc, in fact it has become almost impossible to use Publisher as it crashes so often. Today I tried to do a disc cleanup on my C drive and this proved to be impossible as it crashed out almost as soon as it started to do the initial check. The error message that I get is as follows.C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\mini080403.dmpC:\DOCUME~\Arthur\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xmlThis is the most regular error message. Is there anyone out there that can throw light on this for me as I really could do without having to reformat and go through all of the grief of setting up again.Thanking you for any help.

Answer:Computer taken a turn for the worse

A reformat should always be the last option and I suspect that it is more likely to be a memory problem.First of all check to make sure that it is properly in place by (with the PC disconnected from the power supply) opening up the PC tower and using the side clips to pop the RAM stick out and then reinsert it. If the PC still won't work then click here to test your memory. If it is properly in place and the test shows there to be a problem then it is best to get some from click here as their Memory Selector will help you pick the right memory for your PC. There turn around is very quick and anything ordered tonight you should have by Wednesday. If you have more than one memory stick then test each one independantly to see which is faulty but remember that there should always be a stick in Rimm 1 on your motherboard so a bit of switching around is required. Hope this helps.

I have no clue at all what is wrong.
System keeps turning off (I mean OS I guess is what keeps shutting down as opposed to the power actually going off).
Now it seems far worse after running C Cleaner. I usually Wise Registry Cleaner but my system has been almost at the edge of lock up a lot lately.
I run the following at least two times a week:
Iobit Defrag and Optimize
Wise Registry Cleaner

and a couple more.

Any ideas?

Answer:Computer keeps shutting down. Worse CC

Excellent advice. I don't know why I didn't think of that backup myself.

As for the phantom SP3 error problem in December, it suddenly quit coming up. Not sure how that happened, but am really glad it finally just stopped happening.

Last week I got a virus of some sort on my computer and ever since it hasn't been working properly and I keep getting a lot of pop-ups. Within the last few days I've also started getting warnings on my internet screens themselves. Everything is in red and it says Warning: You're computer needs to be scanned, viruses detected. I've been scanning it daily with avg, but it is never completely resolved. It may seem slightly better after the scanning but later it will be even worse than it was prior to the scan.

Please help! I don't know what to do....

Thank you!

Hi everyone! I run WinXP sp 2 with 1G ram. Lately my computer has been getting progressively slower. It lags when switching between windows or closing windows, or opening new programs, and programs just randomly freeze up (mostly firefox, MSN, and photoshop). It does this quite frequently and it never has before. It's also been idling at a higher CPU usage than normal. At first I thought it may have been my webcam, since lately having it on will shoot my CPU usage to 70-85% (or even 90 sometimes) when it wouldn't normally go over 50% in the past. I would reinstall the driver, but I can't find the CD and can't locate it anywhere on the internet. I've come to notice, though, that even without webcam on, my computer is so much slower and more easily overwhelmed than it has been in the past. I tried many of the things in your "slow computer?" forum to see if I could fix it, which included defragmenting, getting rid of old programs, etc etc. Anyhow, while those things showed temporary improvement, it didn't help overall. I've been quite hesitant to post on this forum because I'm very afraid of there actually being nothing wrong with my machine and me having wasted your time. Though I really can't deal with this lag, so I'll bring myself to post anyway. ]:

Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

When went to take hard drive home we were short on time and didn't shut it down just pulled power supply out from the back, said it would be right to do as done it over the years lots on mine and never missed a beat.
When got it home to power it up it came up with To Reboot properly or install CD.

The boot priority in the Bios goes CD - HDD - Network - Floppy

But it shoes the CD is the only one installed

Have done all the usual hitting of F1 F2 F8 F10 F12

A couple of days ago, I did a system restore, took what files I needed, and reformatted afterwards. In the past, I got freezes every now and then, even after unchecking some of the stuff I didn't need starting up at login. Now, it freezes at the same rate, if not, more often than before. I'd really like to find out what the source behind all this is.

Hi guys.

Basically i returned from Uni to find my dad and bro both had new desktops, and wanted to chuck the old one away. Rather than this i thought i would connect it to my tv in my room and have a desktop for games alongside my laptop.

Its a Medion PC MT5/ MED MT89, with 512 Ram and runs Windows XP. The processor (which becomes more important as you'll see, is a 478 pin 1.6ghz P4 SL5VH).

So i connected the tele and the pc up and booted it. It started up fine witht he memory checks and what not but then suddenly crashed with a blue screen error saying unmountable boot volume etc etc...Thinking it would be the boot.ini i set about trying to boot it from CD. I changed the boot sequences, and even then for some unknown reason it just would not boot off the cd.

Bearing in mind it has DVD drive as well as a CD drive, i selected the DVD drive as the primary master as the CD didnt seem to have power. Tried it again, and yet no boot up...

Thinking someone might have done something to it, i opened it up to check the wires and connections and in doing so found it to be filthy...i set about cleaning it out, until without thinking twice i'd RIPPED THE HEATSINK & FAN OUT!!!! Unbeknown to me, the processor was glued under that and i'd ripped it out without unlocking the mechanism as it was covered by the heatsink...I tried to put the Heatsink (with the processor still pasted to it) back into the motherboard but i couldnt get it to sit or lock in. The pins do not s... Read more

Hey guys. I'm new here, and I didn't know where else to go. I've had the Google redirect virus for about two months, and now my laptop is also playing random sound clips. Also, each time I open Internet Explorer, it's telling me that I'm working offline and now I have to manually switch it to online when I want to use the internet. I have no idea what to do. Please help!!! Logs below:

When I turned my computer on this morning, a blue screen came up that I've never seen before. It said:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable DIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F* to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

Hi all,
I know this is and old-school post but I'm having problems with my laptop just chewing up CPU and Memory for no obvious reason (to me) even when idling. I'm running Windows XP with 4GB RAM (I know it only accepts 3GB of it) and twin Intel 1.5Ghz processors which should cause XP to run fine. It also takes a long time to boot, showing a black screen with a single flashing white cursor which it never used to do. This screen lasts for around 30 seconds before windows kicks in. I have tested my laptop using various anti-virus and spyware software (1 at a time!) and found nothing. I have also run HijackThis and below is the log post, if that helps anyone identify the problem. Also, I have a 150GB HD with 127GB free, and I have defragged it etc. Here's hoping for a solution.

Very sorry to bother you and I appreciate your helpfulness. A few months ago I noticed I was no longer able to watch youtube videos and the like. I used to be able to without problem. Now it stops and starts. The computer began to bog down and run slower, getting worse over time. Today I was going to try to "clean house". I ran Spybot S&D, and then downloaded and ran Glary Utilities, Registry Mechanic, and Spyware Blaster. Now it's a mess, I don't have sound anymore. I have an older system and can't afford to upgrade now, but it did run a lot better a year ago than it does now.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

i've had verizondsl for about half a year or so now, and from last month to present, the connection has been horrible.. sometimes it would just hang for up to a minute at a time, with the modem activity light blinking slowly (loss of connectivity).. before it started, speeds were decent, and although slow compared to the optimum cable i was used to, it was sufficient. now it's just pure garbage. if it weren't for the fact that we're getting free cable, i would immediately switch to roadrunner

i figure asking you guys is probly much more helpful than those scripted outsourced fools at tech support. i tried all that "reset your modem" "unplug the ethernet cord" "make sure you're computer is on" crap already and would like some REAL answers..

PS- at my old house, we used to have verizon as well, and after a while it just stopped all of a sudden and when we called to see what happened, they said since there was construction in the area, they must have switched our phone line over to one with a further CO, and we were now too far to service. verizon is teh gay.

Answer:verizondsl getting worse and worse speeds

Well try plugging the modem into the demark jack if you have one (by where the phone line comes into your house). See if this still happensl. If it doesn't maybe something happened to your internal phone lines. (this probalby won't be the issue I'm betting).

Beyond doing that phone your ISP and get them to file a support ticket or whatever they call it there. When I was having trouble with my DSL connection a couple years ago I phoned up, they sent a guy from the telephone company to test the line and they replaced a device at the CO and the connection has been perfect ever since.

Initially it was Edge not working properly, now it mostly crashes. Even the new "amazing" feature of tab previews doesn't work properly. Imagine, I moved back to Chrome after so many years of being a happy IE user. Cortana was a bit iffy with "Hey Cortana". Now she doesn't listen to what I say at all, even when I press the button. The notification center has its own mood. Often decides to hide until I restart for absolutely no reason at all. Same goes for the sound volume and other flyouts on the desktop.
In short, there is massive degradation of various major features with every new build. And since I post all the issues I find using the feedback app, I know it is not just me experiencing these things. This is disastrous.
So, is it just me or you experience similar issues yourself?

Answer:Is it just me or does Windows 10 get worse and worse with every new build?

It's just you.

CPU: Intel core duo T8100 @2.10 Ghz and 2.10ghz

Graphics: Ati mobility radeon hd 3870

Ram: 2 Gb

Running Windows Vista 64 (although some of my program files say 32?)

So suddenly on june 5th my computer started acting more sluggishly and couldnt perform near as well as it did before. I checked the updates and windows defender and mcafee were the only programs recently updated, I defragged the hard drive, searched for malware and spyware, updated all drivers and none of it fixed my problem. My rig was easily able to play 1080p before and now the video lags terribly, and the games the used to run super smoothly (in range of 30+ fps) now run at and average of 12 fps or lower. On clean boot the problem persists and i cant really tell if the problem is there in safe mode because the only time i can really tell my computer is slowing down is when it is streaming video or playing games.

The weird thing is ive been messing with my video drivers to see if i can fix it, and after using driver sweeper my graphics card didnt function (my windows experience index went from a 5.9 to 1, i couldnt use windows aero) but 1080p ran smoothly as ever. Once i reinstalled the drivers my index score went back up to 5.9 but it cant play 1080p. Because of that fiddling around i cant install catalyst control center anymore (it seems to install ok but when i open it there is an error message "could not load file or assembly CLI.implementation or one of its dependancies the s... Can anybody please help? I have a T61 that came with 2Gb RAM (1GB + 1GB) and I recently purchased another 2GB chip. The problem is that after installation I had a total RAM of 3GB (1GB + 2GB), the Windows Experience Index score actually decreased!  It went from 3.5 to 3.1!!Also, under the category Memory (RAM), the score remained unchanged at 4.8!! Should this have at least increased? Also, I am not noticing any improvements in performance. Is there something that I haven't done or is there anything I should do after the installation? And yes, I did refresh/update from index score. Please don't tell me I need to buy a new notebook!!!Thanks

Answer:Installed additional RAM but computer performance now worse

Part of the problem is that with two differents sized DIMMs you lose the Dual Channel mode feature of the RAM, so the effective throughput of the RAM would be lowered compared to the two 1GB modules that operated in dual-channel. If possible I would suggest 2 x 2G modules for a total of 4GB or if you can afford it 2 x 4G modules for a total of 8GB this will keep the dual channel mode active and the RAM performance optimal.

I've got a very strange problem that occured after I did a trojan removal. Surprising enough my computer worked fairly well while the trojan was busy doing whatever it pleased. I ran my weekly scan with malwarebytes and naturally it found the trojan, asked to remove and reboot. I allowed it to...reboot occurs. I'm feeling hunky dorie..and then I log in. For some reason some programs open just fine like before. Others only open after a solid 6 minutes. And others take even longer. I have not a clue what happened. I did a clean boot with all of the non microsoft services turned off to no avail. What in the heck happened?! any ideas?

I am new to this forum and am having a lot of trouble with my computer. I would appreciate any help I can get with cleaning my computer from what I believe is malware. It started with just redirecting Google searches to other sites, but it seems to be getting worse. It now redirects sites that we type into the browser (was using IE, but am trying Chrome to see if it's any better) and it's not loading certain sites (ie. like Nick Jr. (my son)). Aside form that, it doesn't seem to be allowing Itunes to load or function properly (although this my be my fault as I was removing programs I didn't recognize in an attempt to clean my computer up using the Add/Remove tool from the control panel and may have accidentally deleted something essential to Itunes). I tried to download Itunes again and reinstall it and my computer wouldn't let me. I've run Skybot, but that didn't seem to have any effect. I also tried downloading TDSSKILLER and running it, but my computer wouldn't run it. I'm going to try downloading it from my work computer and saving the program to a jump drive and then seeing if it will run from there at my home computer.

I would truly appreciate any help that could be given. Thank you very much.

PS. I forgot to mention (and was reminded when reading some other threads here) that all of this started with the Windows XP Recovery Virus. I got this on the computer and had to run the computer in safe mode and then r... Read more

The "freeze" seems to happen when the IE7.0 browser is open (though, I do not
necessarily think it is definately a browser problem). Anyway, drwtsn32.exe
always activates when this problem occurs, and wants to send a report.

I have reviewed the contents of the report on several occasions and it
basically shows the error in the same location every time with the identical
error (I think).

The error is always occurring here: C:\Documents and Settings\Daddy\Local

The only way I can unfreeze my computer when it locks up is by going to my
task manager and ending task on one of TWO drwtsn32.exe's.

I went to my event viewer and looked up my last crash information that was
sent to microsoft. It happened about an hour ago. This problem is starting to
happen more often now, and is finally annoying the hec out of me. It is an
application error, and here are the details straight from the event viewer:

It seems like my computer is at it's worst. Programs are running very sloly or not opening at all. Internet will barely connect even though everything says it's connected. It's all adding up and drving me crazy. If anyone knows any way to improve the performance of my computer, it will be greatly appreciated.

I'm posting my HJT log below. I also run Spybot and Adaware regularly. For some reason my computer will not connect to safe mode, it freezes every time I try.

Answer:Recovered Computer Thinking It Would Help But Made It Worse

What are you recovering from?

You'll need to either get a cd, which everyone should have anyway, or you'll need to install more software that may or may not help you in fixing your problems.

But no matter what, you need a cd of your operating system.

Post what caused the problem, and maybe we can help you better. Post any details about your computer, so that the help can better find a solution.

Last week on the Operating System, XP forum, I posted a request for assistance with reducing the number of programs that run on my computer. One person instructed me to repost my question here - which I swear I did - but I couldn't find it later when attempting to check on it. So, I followed the advice from another responder, installing some helpful utilities, running others, etc.

I had printed out the information given to me, read it carefully and followed the advise to the best of my limited ability. Now, as is typical, my computer is running slower, some commands are being totally ignored, and I still have way too many things running (55), most of which (if I'm interpreting what I read correctly) shouldn't be turned off or disabled. (I do need specific instructions on how to uninstall Norton - which I have disabled, after installing AVG. I understand that it requires advanced technological smarts.)

Once again I've attempted to make the switch from IE7 to Firefox. I keep hearing how superior Firefox is, yet, I find it aggravating, specifically the fact that I can't use my arrow keys, Home nor End keys to get up and down pages. Why is that???? Also, Firefox took away my Google Bookmarks toolbar and I can't get it back. Now I can't get it back on IE either. In general, regardless of the browser I'm using, most of the time they open with random modifications to my settings.

One of the programs recently installed is WinPatrol. This l... Read more

I've had my computer (MSi GT60 0NC) since August of last year. In the last month, I noticed that after turning on my computer, sometimes I can only go to the first ~5 sites I went to. For example, if I turned on my computer, went to techsupportforum, Google, Bing, StackOverflow, and Spotify, I would only be able to go to those websites in particular. I could fix this by restarting, and it only happened about once a week, so I ignored it for the most part. Recently, however, it's gotten progressively worse, even to the point that restarting does not fix it. The only way I've found that fixes it is to just leave the computer alone for 10 minutes. I'm really confused at what is happening. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and here's a screenshot of my computer's specs (probably not relevant, just wanted to post it just in case):

Also, I've tested it out, and it's not just the web browser. If I open cmd and use ping or ipconfig, it doesn't work.
Here's an example ping (one site that did work, one that did not):

and here's an example tracert (that did not work):

If I forgot any important details, just let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Hi i have a dell computer with windows xp. I bought a couple of games to play but everytime i tried to play one it said that i may need to update my driver and enable direct3d acceleration. So i went to and just started downloading a bunch of different things and honestly didnt know what i was doing. And now my computer isnt running like it suppose to. Is there a way i can uninstall everything or refresh my computer to start all over again?

Answer:Downloaded stuff to fix my computer but only made it worse

Im going to guess that you downloaded the wrong video or graphics or chipset can go to the add/remove and see whats listed. what you should do is go to the dell site and look up the model of computer you have and put in your service tag then it will show you all the drivers needed for your computer specifically.

This started suddenly. I had just worked on a windows movie maker file for a friends daughter for a school project and was using nero to convert it to a dvd file. After the first attempt was unsuccessful, my computer was crashing and I rebooted. When I did, I could no longer open my Nero, I got the following error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item."

I soon found out, I also got this when I tried to use winzip, or vlc media player.

Who knows what else is effected. I have been searching for fixes, and found several threads here.

I have already tried a system restore to earlier in the day before it occured, as well as tried merging exefix.reg from another post reccomendation, and following instructions from still no luck.

Everything works fine in safe mode and I AM the administrator of my system.

I have a paid version of AVG. Ran virus checks, malware and spyware checks, nothing suspicious shows up.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this issue, but I have no idea if it's a hardware, software, or other issue entirely.

It started doing this today; so far I can't nail down a pattern as to what causes it. It was turned on this morning and had been on but not used for about four hours before my wife got on. She used it for maybe 15 minutes, and then it started glitching and freezing up. The mouse became unresponsive in fits, then eventually the system froze entirely.

She rebooted and ran a full virus scan, but it came up with nothing. It also had frozen again by the time the virus scan was finished, so I had to reboot it again. I was able to use it for maybe 20 minutes or so before I experienced the same glitching and freezing. I rebooted it once more, and now I'm writing this post.

The only common denominator I can think of so far is that we were both using an internet browser when it glitched. She was able to close the browser and continue working on the document she had open for a short time before it froze entirely. When I encountered the issue, it froze too quickly for me to do anything.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Computer starts glitching, gets worse, then eventually freezes

Try this and make sure none of your system files aren't corrupt.
Hope that helps.

Hi all,

Got a weird one. At least, weird because I can't pin down the cause. At random intervals, probably no more often than once a day, maybe less, the hard drive starts getting hammered to the point that the light never goes out (hardly even flickers) and the computer becomes very unresponsive. This keeps up for about 10 minutes and then stops.

Celeron 1.3Ghz
Windows XP SP3

It's not defragging, running a virus scan, updating security software, running Windows updates, running the Indexing Service. I also don't think there's any malware on here. The virus scan was run earlier today and the update occurred an hour before tonight's episode. Windows updates are set to notify but not download. Indexing Service is turned off. (I hope! Anywhere but Search that I need to deal with it?) No other security software on here does automatic updates. Firefox wasn't updating.

Using Task Manager and looking at CPU and memory, nothing much is happening. Add I/O columns and we start to see some action. Having only seen this happen three times when I was sure nothing should be happening, and not having had the Task Manager open the first time (so unresponsive I couldn't open it but you can pop it up from the System Tray), I'm guessing which processes are likely to be involved each time - probably these:

Yesterday my computer was running very slowly and taking forever or never getting to the sites I wanted, especially clicking on a google search title. I did a scan with Malwarebytes free version (updated) and it showed 20 PUP optional.b infections. I immediately clicked to remove them and restarted my computer. Upon restarting I was horrified to find that when I clicked on Internet Explorer it would not connect me to any of my usual sites such as Outlook, Google, Facebook, my bank NOTHING! So I went back to the scan results and restored everything that I had checked to remove on the Oct 22 11:29 scan. Then Internet Explorer worked again and I could get to where I needed to go. Then I did another scan resulting in the PUP opt.b infections; this time I removed the ones that were in memory, registry value or registry key, removing only the ones that were located in files or folders. Again restarted and sure enough no Internet Explorer again! So I restored all of the PUP infections again and here I am today. Computer is still painfully slo... Read more

First off, I did scan through some of the forums, but couldn't find anything that looked like the problem I was having. So I apologize if this has been a topic of massive discussions and I just missed it. This problem has become a particular thorn in my side and extremely frustrating one at that. All I want to do is watch videos off the external drive to the PS3 or blu ray players with the family and then MicrosoftFixit ruins everything. Color me sad...and frustrated. One can only watch so much Wheel of Fortune...
I was changing to a larger TB external drive for streaming throughout the house. Everything used to stream fine through WMP. The devices never showed up in Media Streaming options, but everything worked and updated without incident. Once I changed to the larger external drive, no media folders showed up on any device in the house. The WMP icon was there from Folders>Videos> but then, no files anymore.
I saw that my Windows Firewall had a big red box on it and thought that might be the culprit eventhough I had been using Bitdefender Total Security with no problems. I used Microsoft Fixit to fix the "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings error code 0x80070" and to try and get network devices to show up in Media Streaming Options.
After using it, my devices showed up in Media streaming options and my Windows Firewall went from the red to the correct looking green blocks screen. Restart. Then IT happened. Nary a Media Serv... Read more

Windows XP, Media Edition Service Pack 2

The other day upon trying to boot up my computer, it got all the way to a loading screen with the gateway Logo loaded for a few seconds then went to a blue screen with the message.

Stop: 0x00000024

I first removed all of my ram, (I had 4 sticks) and turned the computer on with each one, one in at a time. By itself, 2 ram sticks did not allow the computer to load up past the first black screen (Which said Bios Menu F2, Boot Menu F10) it would instead make a long drawn out high volume high tone for 2 seconds, then do it again a few moments after stopping it.

So, I put those two ram sticks that didn't cause that to happen in my computer and it got to the loading screen then gave me the error message again.

I eventually got the Recovery Console Disk floppy's, put them onto a CD to go into the Recovery Console. I did dskcheck /r and restarted my computer same issue with the same stop message.

I then tried fixmbr, then fixboot. Upon restarting the computer again it gives me the error "Ntldr Not Found" in the dos black screen. (I think the screen with all the code is dos at least)

It will load the recovery console, I can boot up Ubuntu on this computer with an Ubuntu CD (Without installing) but any other way I can't get past the Ntldr.

I found some codes to try in the recovery console. I tried

Hi everyone,

I've been a long time reader on this forum and most of the time I was able to find my answers with the search option. This time however, I'm clueless! So I hope I can count on your expertise. ;)

Yesterday I formatted a friend's computer and installed Windows 7 (he used Vista previously). He can't work at the moment due to an accident, so he's gaming a lot. I told him that Win7 had much better performance than Vista and that he should consider to upgrade. After installing everything we immediately noticed that the performance was much worse...

He mainly plays Diablo 3 and was able to get a very stable framerate in Vista and he always even watched internet streams meanwhile on his secondary display (Full HD TV, connected with VGA).

I installed all latest Nvidea drivers on Windows 7, disconnected the second display, ... And while playing Diablo 3 he gets major framedrops and stutters. To be honest it isn't playable this way.

What could cause this difference in performance? I feel bad for formatting his PC, promising him better performances and seeing that I've almost ruined his gaming experience...

Sorry I did make another post but it had a different title cos i didnt realise the depth of the problem and the problem has increased 10 fold since then and no one has posted so i thought a fresh post with full info was better than re-writing and bumping.. especially as the title is unrelated to the problem, the only time I could see a sign these problems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, I uninstalled it cos I was getting severe problems with the computer completely hanging, after uninstalling and reboot chkdsk ran and on the first 5% or so of checking the index it found problems then ran thru chkdsk pretty fast until fixing unreadable security description datastreams.

windows works absolutely fine no problems whatsoever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream , says unable to read and boots straight into windows, again windows works fine except a little hanging.

I decided to try and give things a clean up, just deleting standard files i dont need, cleaned up ie etc, ran a full spyware scan, ran a full virus scan, installed my new firewall and rebooted..

this time it took forever to get into windows and the list of problems it brought up was huge...

it also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files, but I have a 160GB driv... Read more

I have to use my dad's computer, which he uses for work, because My computer died and we don't have the money to fix it, and I wanted to overclock it, which I REALLY shouldn't have since my dad depends on using it for work. Anyways, I ran nTune's "Fine Tuning" option, for 3 hours, but wasn't happy with the memory timings because the RAM supports 4 #CAS Latency, with 4-4-4-12 timings, and nTune decides to back everything down that it has tuned, when the computer crashes/restarts, so when it was too high FSB clocks that caused it to crash, it would lower everything else it had tuned. In the end nTune put the timings at 5-6-5-18, so I went back into the BIOS and on accident, I set it to 3 CAS latency, with 4-4-4-12 timings. This is where it wouldn't boot up, because I set them too low, so I had to reset the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard. It booted up fine, and I set the BIOS back how I had them, but when I tried to boot into windows I got an error about ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt or missing, and when I tried to boot into Vista (Dual Boot) and got a similar problem, but with hal.dll or something, so I spent probably an hour trying to figure out what caused it, and it turns out a simple BIOS reset fixed it. Once I reset the BIOS, I tried to boot into windows XP, which worked fine, then when I tried to log into my account I got some error about lsass.exe failed, and the computer would restart in 1 minute. When the timer got down to 53 seconds... Read more

Answer:Computer Is Bsoding With Driver_irql Errors, Getting Worse Everytime I Try To Fix It, Can't Even Log Into Windows Now, Trie...

I think it's FINALLY FIXED! My advice to anyone with the same BSOD, try the simpler things first.

What fixed it for me, was booting into safe-mode (Or safe-mode with command prompt, and opening explorer.exe from there) then go Start > Run, and type msconfig. Once that opens, disable EVERYTHING on startup, and possibly in services, and also under the "General" tab, select Diagnostic startup. Click OK, restart, and let it boot normally. It should work fine. From there, you can enable what you need one at a time, in msconfig>startup.

A total nightmare! Computer gone through a timewarp! This may answer some questions but requires information, too. Sorry its a bit long, but it may help somebody!

For a few weeks my Fujitsu Siemens 1.2 Ghz 512Ram AMD Athlon PC was taking ages to boot up and was very slow once it started.

I use Avira and SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) Pro , so I did a scan with both - Nothing.
I cleaned out unwanted files (temps etc.) and the registry with Easycleaner - still the same.
I have an old 2006 XP Repair Pro program so I used that to clean the Registry etc. as it is more thorough.
It found loads of unnecessary stuff so I let it delete it all.
I have done this many times with no ill effects.

Once it had rebooted, Windows behaved weirdly. The wallpaper screen came up but it took ages for the icons to appear. When it loaded there was no bottom toolbar or Start menu. Pushing the Windows buttons did nothing.
I right clicked on Time and opened a toolbar from the menu. This brought up the Start menu again, but strange things were happening. No icons for open windows were shown on the toolbar, although they were open according to task Manager, and only one window would show at a time.
I thought a System Restore might solve it, but on clicking I got "System Restore is Unable to Protect your Computer - Restart etc."
Search did not work from Start or on a window.
The Firewall was off and I could not alter that.
Updates were off and both Antiviruses had not started up on boot.

I looked on ... Read more

We are using Windows XP Professional ver 5.1 SP3 on our laptop. Using IE 6

Recently, we started to get a lot of Pop ups and so my husband changed the settings to block Pop ups. He also decided to shut off the auto update feature as it was taking very long and do it manually once a week.

Since then we started to get a different - constant popup problem from Trend Micro Office scan that says URL Blocked and the URL is always\...... with a very long message everytime we browse anything (it doesn't matter what browser we use)

Other Problems:
1. We are noticing internet browsing has slowed down considerably
2. When I click on any link on my Hotmail web page it keeps showing its Loading which has never happened before. It takes several clicks for the link to finally work. It also keeps giving me a message Windows Live Hotmail has diconnected. Please try again later. This has also never happened before.
3. When I shut off the computer a window pops up showing Ending now RUNDLL32. It seems like it is saving information and trying to shut the program down but when its towards the end of the bar. It says program has stopped responding. So I have been clicking the END NOW button and then it shuts off OK.
4. Today when I switched on the computer, it gave me a Windows message saying error opening IE. I forgot to note it down. But some error wherein I had a choice to SEND report etc.

I think the situation is turning from bad to worse. We have scanned the compute... Read more

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section but I could not find anywhere better to post it. I am an admitted computer novice and I am trying to buy a new computer. I am Canadian and thinking of buy thru MDG Canada. My current computer is:

pentium 4 2.0
228 MB Ram
80 GB hard drive
XP operating system

The system I am thinking of buying is:

Vista Home Premium
Intel dual core e2140 processor
intel 946GZIS motherboard
1GB DDR2 667 MHz Ram or 2GB 333MHz

western digital 500 GB 7200 RPM HD 16 MB cache 4gbps
1000GB 5400 RPM IDE HD
intel extreme graphics media accelerator x3000
20x DVD-/+RW Dual Layer 2MB buffer
Visionquest 22" Digital LCD monitor
intel 5.1 prefessional audio
intel Pro 10/100/1000 Network LAN connection
Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse

I would like to know if that system would be much of an upgrade from what I current have? Also which of the bolded sections should I get? The salesman is really pushing the 1GB Ram and 500 GB HD. The salesman is also making a big deal about getting a 2007 model versus a 2006 model. Would there be much difference 2006 and 2007 of the above mentioned equipment?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Good Morning,
My computer won't shut down (unless I press the on/off button) because windows will not shut down!
Any ideas?

Answer:You can't get yours up? I can't get mine down!

What happens when you try to shut down?
Does Windows produce an error, or does the machine just hang?

What make and model is the computer?
