Preferred Solution: Internet not working in chrome but working fine in firefox

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Internet not working in chrome but working fine in firefox

Check the installed extensions in Chrome's settings and remove any you find.  If you still cannot go online, check the firewall.

This is my first post here so hopefully I am in the right place. A few months ago I started having an issue with Google Chrome. Any time I open the browser the search engine appears but if I type something in to the search bar it instantatiously gives me the "cannot connect to the internet" error page. Same with if I try to type any other website into the browser bar. I then opened Internet Explorer and it worked just fine so I down loaded Firefox because I can't stand to run IE for longer than it takes to download a different broswer. I then did a few normal trouble shooting things at first, turning my computer off and on again, restarting the router, uninstalling chrome and reinstalling. I had a friend who is going to school for IT come over and look at it and he did a few things which I don't remember. But nothing worked. I also ran CCleaner to get rid of any malware. Just today I tried these trouble shooting steps: When I ran FarBar service scanner no missing files or errors were yeah I am pretty much at a loss.
Anyone on here have this issue before or know how to fix it?

For Firefox, I have the better part of a minute before the browser closes and gives me a crash report, unfortunately, I am unable to copy paste the report.

IE does not even open, and simply gives me an option on whether to send an Error Report or Not.

I have attempted reinstalling both browsers, and no good.

Thanks Plenty in advance.

Firefox won't connect to the internet or load any of the pages. The internet connection is fine. IE is working, though it does get a bit slow sometimes and I can't seem to download anything.
I've checked:
1.)Anti-Virus software - no threats found
2.)Firefox Setting: It's directly connected to the internet; no manual proxy setting.
3.)Firewall is not blocking Firefox
Any ideas what might be the problem?

Internet Explorer stopped working first.  The dialog box says Internet Explorer has stopped working- A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.  Chrome looks like it is going to start because of the symbol that pops up but after a second the symbol goes away and it just never opens.  When I open firefox it works but I noticed it is starting to slow down.  Do I have a virus?

Answer:Only firefox is working - no chrome or internet explorer

Virus may be too strong a word
Did you get all of the updates released yesterday and did they all install correctly?
Have you rebooted the system at least once since all of the updates were installed?
Is your security program current and have you run a scan?
How old is the system and can you give us some details - HDD size and free space, installed RAM?
Where were you just before you noticed the problems?

Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox are not working in Windows 8

Answer:Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox are not working in Windows 8

I found this on another forum and it worked for me.
This problem usually has to do with TCP/IP or Winsock requiring a reset.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can
be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.
You need Admin access to enter the codes below. Windows button + x, then choose Command Prompt (Admin)
netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)
You may have to reinstall Chrome and Firefox or reboot to have the chnage take place.

I just bought this laptop about 10 days ago to use specifically for a writing project separate from my other work laptop. It has Windows 7. It had Google Chrome installed (or maybe my brother installed it upon taking it out of the box.) I have
used IE as my browser on this laptop once or twice, but mostly use Google Chrome. I downloaded some genealogy software I just bought today about an hour or so ago (Family Tree Maker 2012) and noticed that it would not connect to the internet to register- it
kept saying "No internet connection". After trying a few things (allowing the program access through Windows Firewall, checking to make sure that "proxy server" tab was not checked in Internet Settings, disabling some Bing Maps and Windows
Live email accelerators) and finally tried closing Chrome and opening IE to run in background instead. However, IE won't connect - keeps saying "Cant display webpage" although I am definitely connected to internet via wifi. I tried resetting Internet dice. I've restarted several times. Nothing is working. Any suggestions?
My husband thinks i should uninstall Chrome, which he guesses is causing all the trouble with both IE and the Family Tree software. But I'm afraid that if I uninstall Chrome and it doesnt work, i wont be able to get back on the internet since I can presently
only do so through Chrome.

Answer:IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

Uninstalling Chrome should not be nessesary it does have an agressive default install which should not be used but uninstalling will not fix any issues because chromes uninstall will not change
setting back the way they were before you installed it/ or who ever.
Reset ie9 manually,
Click the Start button on the Taskbar,
Click on Control panel,
Click on Internet options,
Go to the Advanced section,
Click on Reset button on the bottom,
Check the box to Delete personal settings,
Use the recommended setup and install options.
Also see this,
New computers come with pre-installed security suites/ Trial versions,
The best thing to do with these trial versions is to Uninstall them,
Use these instead,

If money isn't an issue add the full pro version of malwarebytes, less than mcafee or norton,
Then use the free version of this as well for even more ways to clean your machine,

I'm getting a pop up that tells me chrome has stopped working when I start up chrome. Then I get more of these pop ups as I browse the web. The pop up tells me chrome has stopped working when it actually hasn't. Anyone know how to fix this?

Answer:Getting chrome has stopped working popups but chrome still runs fine

Try resetting Google Chrome

Under Windows

Method 1:

Close all running instances of Google Chrome.

Go to the installation folder of Google Chrome:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\User Data.

In the User Data folder, look for a file named as "Default" and rename it.

Launch Google Chrome and a new "Default " file will be created.

Method 2:

On the latest version of Google Chrome, click on the Customize and control Google Chrome button > Settings.

Click on Advanced Settings.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, until you reached the "Reset browser settings" section.

Click on Reset browser settings.

Hi, for a few weeks now YouTube hasn't worked in any of the three browsers I've mentioned in the topic title. I've made the topic in this section as the problem isn't specific to one browser. I have absolutely no idea why it won't work, here's the message I receive when I try to access YouTube using Firefox:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at YouTube - Broadcast Yourself..

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I've looked through all my firewalls and anti-virus software and the website hasn't been blocked, it just won't load. Embedded videos just appear as a white box. I'd really appreciate it if somebody could help me as this is really starting to frustrate me now!

Answer:[SOLVED] YouTube not working in Firefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

It sounds like a problem with flash player. Try uninstalling, Uninstall Flash Player | Windows and reinstall. Make sure to reboot after uninstalling AND installing.

If that doesn't work, uninstall again and try reverting back to an older version.

Hope this helps.

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

Answer:Internet not working, windows update, ping, DNS, etc. working fine

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. I searched through the forum and I find that my problem appears to be very unusual. My Firefox, Google Chrome, and Internet Explorer browsers are not working properly and this issue has prevented my computer from shutting down or restarting properly. This
problem started when one day, I was unable to open up Google Chrome (which is a browser I commonly use) to go online. Google Chrome refused to launch open. When I finally got it to open, it was a blank screen that would not show my frequently visited websites
as it normally would but would only show my bookmarks bar. When I tried to enter a website, like, it refused to load and responded like I had not entered any website at all.
In a panic, I tried internet explorer, which also refused to launch. Then, I decided to shut down my computer but it refused to shut down. The screen would say "Shutting Down" and would go black but, after waiting over 5 minutes, I decided to force
shut down the computer. (This is very similar to the scenario that would happen when I would restart my computer). Once I turn the computer back on, however, my browsers work normally.

After calling the manufacturer of my computer, they had to put my computer in safe mode and then they scanned it for viruses after deleting the temporary files on my desktop. Strangely enough, this fixed the problem and my browsers worked normally. However,
in less than a day, the problem would return. I know this is not a virus problem be... Read more

I just recently reinstalled windows xp and now my IE isn't working. It says the web page you requested is not available offline. It also asks Connect or stay offline. Connect brings up to this dial-up thing, but i have high speed. Firefox works fine and everything else works good. Everything except Microsoft Related software that requies internet, such as MSN messanger setup.exe that requires downloads and installing Windows Media player. I tried reinstalled IE, but that also gives me an error message, it says Setup was unable to download information about available installation sites, Setup may have been unable to migrate your current proxy settings. Click Advanced if you know your proxy settings. I ran IEfix, deleted temportary files and cookies, reset IE settings to default. I have this CD that came from my ISP that includes IE 6 and i tried to install it, but all these error messages came up saying i dunt have those files. Oh and im installing version 6 because 7 requires SP2, but it doesn't work for me.
What can i do? is there a full package IE installer that installs IE directly.

Is IE6 installed? If so Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

I have really flumoxed myself on this one. Somewhere alonf the line of reinstalling my system last weekend, I have disabled IE. I am running XP Pro, with Agnitum Outpost Firewall and Norton AV 2005. Hi guys and gals !

My 1st post, greetz to everyone !
As a short notice I've been around computers since 386DX so I know all the usual stuff and it won't apply here. Trust me, read down...

This is the wierdest problem ever, realy - ever.

The 1st encounter was when I started downloading some links from rapidshare. At some point RS on firefox told me this and that about something I can't recall regarding free DL but I was still able to download the free links on IE. Then IE went funny. The downloads went fine up to about 0.5MB downloaded and then the speed would decline until the DL hung up. I disregarded this problem as RS was never important for me. God save the torrents...

At this point I was running a perfectly healthy bug free XP SP2.

Right, so now I got myself a nice new shiny 0.5TB external drive and decided to clean the whole lot, backup and reinstall XP. Bad move. Install disk is original btw (from the office ), XP Pro, SP1 included. So no piracy.

Reinstall was a peach, up to the point of GFX drivers (I use Omega for this old ATI). Trying to go to theyr page with IE it just hung with page name, background color and status bar in "Opening...."

Went for Firefox, got the page but when trying to DL it I get the same symptoms as before with rapidshare, DL just dies.

Wierd thing is that at some point I managed to DL both of them via IE - after calling ISP tech support. The guy at the other end was doing something he called changing my cable mo... Read more

WRONG! One copy of Windows, one computer! This is obviously a copy that's already installed on a machine, I think you better check the Windows EULA again!

Have major graphics display issues with Firefox & IE! Chrome is the only browser I can view web pages & buttons, icons, stationary etc. perfectly. All browsers have been updated. I can hardly use Firefox or IE.
I prefer firefox but the buttons, email stationary icon links & other web page graphics are invisible. My email stationary tools are invisible. When I mouse over the graphic links (icons) I see the ALT tags & the links do work even though invisible!

For example, the font color chart shows no colors, only black outlined boxes, like a grid with no colors to select. Can't see any the Emoticons, Bold, no tools what so ever.
The graphics are lacking. Very bare bones.
A picture can explain it best.
The Chrome browser is the only browser I can use without any issues.

I took out my Nvidea graphics card a year ago when it went bad & am using my
inbuilt SiS graphics. I've tried everything with no success.
I'm wanting to check my webpage & landing pages in different browsers but I can't until I can resolve this.

Appreciate any help in this matter!!!

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this post, so let me know if I should post elsewhere.

I came home from work today and tried to open firefox and it gave me this...

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at

* Check the address for typing errors such as instead of

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I figured Comcast was down or something, but I tried my other 2 PCs (which are all hooked up to the same router/modem). Both are working and can load firefox fine...

So, I rebooted my router and cable modem. Still no Forefox on just the 1 PC...

IE and all other internet linked programs are working fine, it's just Firefox...

Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas on what could have caused this, or what I can do to fix it?

Any help/suggestions would be greatfully appreciated!!

Answer:Firefox not working, network conn. fine

Firefox 3.02 stopped working. I upgraded to 3.03, then tried a clean reinstall, then tried going back to Firefox 2. Tried running Firefox in Safe Mode. Also disabled Norton, and Windows Firewall. Also tried uninstalling Windows SP3. Nothing worked! IE and Outlook Express work fine. Before this happened I uninstalled the free Norton Corporate Edition which came with my new computer and installed my university's Symantec Antivirus I read somewhere that Norton uninstall can cause this problem, but don't know what to do.

1. An email was sent from my wife's email account to my email account that contained an attachment out of MyDocuments.  Both accounts are used on this machine.  She did not send it and there is no version of the email in her sent messages.
2. When attempting to install an Symantec Endpoint Protection upgrade, I received an error that Base Filtering Engine Service was not running.  BSE was no longer listed in services to start.  I was able to restart BSE via a registry update (downloaded from the web - and finished the install
3. Currently when I start IE10, the first page I go to works fine, however, if I then try to open a new address in the same tab, or open a new tab, nothing happens and it hangs up.  Firefox works fine.
4. Symantec has found a number of virus (Risk: Trojan.Gen) that are DWH????.tmp located in my AppData\Local\Temp\ directory that get quarantined but come back.
I am looking to see if I am still infected, or if I was infected and left with damage.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.   Run another scan with mbar.exe and click the CleanUp button. It will require a reboot. When it has rebooted, run another scan with mbar.exe and click CleanUp again if necessary.Send the mbar-log.txt along with an update on machine behavior.

In normal mode, my Internet Explorer does not work. I try to open it but the pages never come in although I am sure I am connected. I also tried Firefox and that is not work either, with the same error as IE. Windows Live email does work and I am able to pull down email, but none of the browsers work.

Also, when I try to update Spybot, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes they fail, saying that updates cannot be downloaded. I was able to run and update in Safe mode with network to get the updates and run Spybot, Symantec Antivirus, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes, and Windows:, but no issues were found and the when I reboot in Normal mode, the same problem exists.

Next, I ran SDfix in safe mode and have attached in this note, but also, the same problems exist (see attached: Report.txt)

Finally, I have now run dds.scr this and am posting the results. (see DDS.txt below and attached: Attach.txt)

Any help you could provide on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello..I was originally using Mozilla Firefox until one day it stopped working..which by that i mean that the browser itself would open and load as normal but the spot that says "New tab" or whatever site youre at, would just say "blank page" and stay that way I installed google Chrome after giving up on Firefox.. until today when it basically did the same thing (out of nowhere, just like last time)..the browser loads but no page will load AT ALL! And same with internet explorer! the only way I am even on and typing this is that IE 64 bit DOES work, so i know i am connected to the internet for sure..but i can't leave it this way and use 64 bit regularly because it simply will not use or download flash, so NO games or movies are possible..which is just not barable to me! I dont know what to do..i've uninstalled and reinstalled, unplugged router and reset it, restored the internet options through control panel..i am out of ideas and i dont know what has even caused this, much less what to do to resolve this! But i just can't deal with the current state of things! ANY HELP is appreciated! thanks!!

Answer:firefox, chrome AND IE not working!

This is likely a plugin/addon issue. Open FF and disable all addons. Then, close it and re-open it. If it works, re-enable the addons one at a time to see which one is causing the problem.

To disable addons, click on the Tools menu and select Addons. Then, select each addon and click on the Disable button.

Let's try getting one browser working. Once we do that, we'll likely know why the others aren't working.

Basically, I had my Zoom router in my office (That's what we call it), and we all decided to move the computer into my room, along with the router.

Now, when I plug in the phone cord (ADSL), into the wall, the link (or internet establishment), keeps blinking, when it shouldn't, saying that it cannot establish a connection.

Both phone cords have the same number, and everything.. and it just wont establish connection, and I don't have anything wireless, and the room is around 50 ft away, so I can't get online at all anymore..

Is there a difference between a phone line, and the root phone line?

Okay, so I had my friend download a torrent program (uTorrent). And shortly after, as he was downloading a file, his internet stopped working.

I don't know too much on the situation, but appearently it says his connection to the internet is "Excellent," and yet, when he tries to use his internet browser (Either IE or Netscape) it just loads for a minute and eventually says "Web Page Not Found" or whatever the common error is.

Any possible solutions to try?

Ok so I had a bad virus last week that I finally got rid of. Once my computer was "fixed" certain programs refused to connect to the internet while others would perfectly. Will connect and work perfectly: Firefox, Electric Sheep, AIM, uTorrent. What won't connect: IE, Chrome, Steam, Rainmeter, random RSS readers. Anyone know what's causing this or how I can fix it? Thanks in advance.

well I have had this problem for a month or so now, and at first it was okay just using IE but now it has became an annoying problem... it does not let me update java either for some reason ( I downloaded the offline version and I am still having issues) I have tried many diffrent things to try and get this to work and NOTHING is helping, I even ran thru the maleware removing steps to no avail : ( I am running vista home, ie 8, I am connected to cable internet (no routing) I am pretty sure their is a hidden firewall or pieces of one left over still causing this problem because it acts like nothing is getting permission to acess the net... I only use windows firewall and defender (until last night when I DL'd superanti spyware, combofix, cc cleaner, etc) and yes I have tried allowing programs thru win firewall and it still does not work and yes I have tried many combinations of uninstall/reinstall any help with my issue would truely be appreciated.. Another problem, after I ran a bunch of Microsoft updates on my vista home premium x64. Chrome and Firefox stoppped working. When I tried to goto any site it just said cannot establish connection. IE is working fine.

I searched and it gave me loads of recommendations to try which I have done to no avail. Turned the whole firewall off and they still don't connect.

Yep, they work in Safe Mode (networking only).

But the thing here is they worked before this bunch of updates happened. So, I guess the updates did something.

Does anyone have any ideas here? Many many thanks!!!!

Answer:Chrome/Firefox not working in Vista

If they work in safe mode, they will probably work with clean boot. If that is true, follow Clean Boot procedure to find the cause of the problem

Hi all, first post here, I am simply stumped.

This issue is on my girlfriend's desktop PC. She's running XP, but I'm not sure which version.

- It connects to the Internet via EVDO Aircard. That connection is fine, rock solid (actually much better than my laptop with the same model aircard!)

- We have the Nintendo USB WiFi adaptor connected to another USB port, to share the established Internet connection with our Wii.

The problem is this:
The USB WiFi adaptor is stuck in Acquiring Network Address mode, after running just fine for a couple months!
- I have tried ipconfig/release and renew, I have tried going into the device manager and uninstalling/reinstalling that one thing.
- when I run ipconfig alone, the internet connection comes up with a normal result, but "Local Area Connection 4" (now 5 after the reinstall) comes up with all zeroes.
- when I try to "repair" the connection it gives me an error, I believe it says it cannot get an IP address. But I'm not looking for it to get an IP address - the Wii has a MAC address, and I would think the Nintendo servers would have given it an IP if it needed one, no?

I'm not a power user here, and all the solutions I've found in my search so far, I've either already tried or are over my head.

Anyone out there?

Answer:Internet explorer not working - Netscape fine

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Hi guys I could use anyone's help. The problem is with my desktop pc. I connected it to the modem using a new ethernet cable but I can't access the net. To test the cable, I plugged it to another pc and I got no problem connecting to the net. When I borrowed another cable from a friend and tried it on my desktop, it connected directly to the net. Which means that there is no problem with either the cable that I bought and the NIC of my pc.

The message that I get when I use the cable that I bought on my pc is "Unidentified Network". Can anybody help me out with this?

Answer:No Internet connection even if cable and NIC is working fine

You should tell Windows firewall that's your new home network. I don't see why a new cable would make your computer think that your old internet connection was something new.

I have a new DELL XPS M2010 that I want to connect using wireless card. OS - Vista, Linksys Router, when I try to "Diagnose and Repair" I get the response "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server".

It's showing an Excellent connection to the route, but will not connect to the Internet. I've tried a few things, such as connecting to other unsecured wireless internet connections and I was able to connect to the Internet then. I also looked at another thread on this site that suggested to add a DNS Server to the list of and nothing happened with that.

Other PCs in the house, all on wireless, connect fine (obviously including the laptop I'm posting on right now). Still searching the forums for similar solutions - here is my ipconfig information:

Hi There!

I'm not terribly technical so please bear with me. I really hope someone can help as this is driving me nuts...

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP PC wired directly into the Internet. Everything has been fine (more or less) since I bought it a year ago, but yesterday - for no obvious reason as far as I could tell - my main browser (Chrome) stopped working. I tried Firefox and IE, but they wouldn't work either.

Then I saw the Internet was still accessible - iTunes was working, Skype was working, and so on. It was just browsers. I tried reinstalling Chrome and Firefox - nothing. Using my laptop for the initial download, I installed Safari for Windows and - much to my amazement - it worked, but to go over to that permanently seems like a plaster over a major wound. And in any case, there is obviously something very wrong (although probably not terribly serious - I hope!)

Last night and this morning, I've been hunting high and low for a solution to no avail. There are threads on this site (mostly several years old and closed) too, and I think I've now tried every possibility mentioned there.

If I start up in safemode with networking, it's fine.

The only anti-virus product I had was Norton (sorry!) which I've uninstalled. I ran the removal tool twice to make sure.

I've just started work again after the summer holiday and need this machine for my job. If I take it back to the place I bought it, I can wave goodbye to it for sev... Read more

Hi Guys,
I spent a couple of days on different forums online to fix this issue I have.
My issue is at work. I am not really IT expert but apparently I am the only one who knows a little bit about computers.
So, we have different computers (desktop PC with windows 8.1) and they are all connected with ethernet cable to s switchboard itself connected to our building/office internet.
They are all working fine with access to internet and network. One of them started to not have access anymore to internet.
I can ping the printer also connected to the network but I can't ping any other computers from the network.
The ip address config and DNS are all set up in automatic. I tried to connect another computer to the same socket in the wall and it is still working so the issue is not coming to the switchboard but to the Desktop Config iteslf.
The ip addres automatically configured is completely different from the other ones on the network and when I try to change it manually with the right default gateway, DNS, Subnet is still does not access internet.
I have noticed that the McAfee antivirus is expired and I thought either the firewall or this fact could be an issue but some of the other computers do have the same McAfee system with sometimes firewall on sometimes not and sometimes expired as well but they still have access to internet.
So, yeah I am a bit lost here and I am not sure what the problem could be as it is a new computer and it was working fine until two days ag... Read more

My tablet is running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Version 2002 SP3.

All 3 applications cannot seem to connect to the internet. IE 8 displays the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" page, while Chrome gives me an "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error.". Then MSN gives me "Error code: 80048820" and cannot sign in.

This all happens, but I can still use my Firefox for some reason. (as I am now to ask for your kind help)

I only remember one significant event occurring between the last time the 3 applications worked until now. I installed Stardock's WindowBlinds product. However, after applying a skin, I didn't like it at all. I remember uninstalling the product and then also using System Restore to the point before I installed WindowBlinds. But that resulted in my computer turning VERY strange and nothing was working properly... so I restored my computer to its previous state.

Could that have been the trouble? I'm not sure what other data I can provide...

But thanks in advance!

I have been using Firefox but I still get random crashes of the browser and get frequent redirects on links. Computer in general is running smooth with no slowdown!I have ran a scan with AVG and Spybot which found some stuff which I deleted. I also ran HijackThis (deleted a few suspicious looking entries) and I have used a restore point when the problem first began but nothing has worked. After following the guide I hope I have attached everything needed, I am also attaching my HiJack this log hoping it may help. Yesterday I tried to install Windows 7 Release Candidate in a new partition. My first task was to create a partition for it (20 gigs). I tried to use Partition Magic, but it kept failing with error 983. I looked a lots of thread which suggested running chkdsk -f.
I did this and some strange stuff happend.....!
Since then I cannot run IE or Firefox, but Google chrome works.
Also lots of services fail to start. They come up with Error 1068.
Also my email client wont download emails (outlook 2007). I assume this is because the service it needs won't start.
I've tried doing a system restore but it won't let me... I assume the service it needs can't start either.
I tried going to Microsoft's site to do a registry check but their tools only let you access if your using IE, and it won't run....!

All very frustrating....!!!!

Current OS is Windows XP service Pack3
Please HELP....!

i need some help.
i live in a country where Facebook and youtube are not allowed so i was using the program ultrasurf to get to this websites. but about 3 or 4 weeks ago my IE stopped working while i was on facebook and the ultrasurf shortcut disappeared from my desktop. i have not been able to use either IE, google chrome and can not update my softwares. but I am able to access the internet using firefox.

i tried the solutions such as turning firewall on and off, or checking the LAN settings, nothing has worked so far. if it is the ultrasurf program causing the problem what do i need to detect the program wherever it is hiding and delete it?does anyone have any solutions to this?

Answer:IE & chrome went dead while using Ultrasurf, only firefox working

the only thing that chrome and internet explorer share is the proxy settings... so here is what to do:
1) Run ultrasurf.
2) in FF:
Go to Tools - Options - Advanced tab - Network - Settings (under connections category) write down the proxy server address and the port.
3) in Chrome:
Go to options - under the hood - change proxy settings - LAN Settings
write down the proxy server address and port you found from FF.

I recently upgraded the HDD in my wife's 64-bit DELL laptop to an SSD, taking the opportunity to re-install all the programs (i.e. not cloning the HDD) and set up data partitions. In order to avail myself of the 'Free' Windows 10 upgrade, I first re-installed Windows 7 SP1 along with some 200+ updates and a few applications. (Kaspersky, Total Security, WLM, Google Chrome etc.) The installation of these went fine. Whilst adding further applications, Microsoft advised me that my Windows 10 ugrade was ready to be downloaded / installed by the Updates program. This went without a hitch, and as far as I can see (so far) Windows 10 is working correctly.
However, both my Google Chrome & Firefox browsers have stopped working. I'm sure I have used Chrome since upgrading and Firefox was installed (and worked) after the upgrade. Edge & Opera browsers work fine.
Earlier today, when I started up Chrome it did flash up a'server' error message, but foolishly, I dismissed it too quickly to read it in detail. I have removed Chrome & re-installed it a couple of times in the hope of getting it working again - but no luck. No both programs just show a 'wait' spinning circle for a few seconds and this then stops. There are no error messages.
I have run sfc /scannow, but that hasn't reported any errors. Any suggestions as to how to get both programs working again (I suspect they are caused by the same problem) would be most appreciated.

Answer:Chrome & Firefox stopped working in Windows 10

If the Firefox page opens at all click on help.Troubleshooting information.Refresh Firefox.
Or delete it and then reinstall it.

Hi everyone, for some reason I can access the internet on my Windows XP with my other user names no problem, but not with the main one I use anymore. I had a virus penetrate my computer (one of those fake antivirus), so I logged in Safe Mode as Administrator and ran Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyWare. It finally got rid of the anoying messages, but now I can't connect to the internet. But why is it that I can access the internet with another user on the same computer but not with the main one I use all the time? I even created a new user and it works, but that's not the point, I need to fix my user where I have all my settings.

I have tried: to clear out history, the "netsh winsock reset" command and restarting, windows firewall is off but my ESET is on, I can't run updates because of the internet but its up to date... I find this very weird... please can someone help me, I have been trying for 6.5 hours and nothing :-( believe me, I have looked all around, and I am a pretty technical guy... but this one got me!

Thank you for providing such great help with this forum

I am getting the following errors on 2 browsers but not sure if this has anything to do with it!

On IE 8: ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm

Answer:My internet is not working on 1 user but the rest are fine...weird!!

Not sure if it will help but Ihave seen something similar before.
Try going to internet options, connection tab, lan settings and make sure its set to auto detect settings

Hi there...thanks in advance for anyone's help/suggestions.

Background: I have an HP laptop, running Windows XP and IE 7, and use a wireless router. I recently had issues with the Vundo virus. I followed the forums here in MajorGeeks and no longer have any issues (at least I don't think so since the _helper.dll files are no longer popping up, and the virus scans come out clean).

Problem: When I'm using this laptop, and open IE, the internet connection is strong and fast for about 5 or 10 minutes. After that, the connection is completely out, although the wireless router icon suggests the connection strength is "excellent."

My other laptop (running Vista) works just fine during all of this, with no connection disruptions (so I know it's not the router, or Comcast causing the problem).

What I've tried: I installed the new beta IE 8, thinking perhaps that might fix something. It did not. Tonight, I will reinstall the network card drivers to see if that helps.

I'd love anyone's thoughts on why the internet connection is going out on me. It is not until I restart the computer that I can browse the web (and ony for a short amount of time). Could it be that I still have virus issues?? If so, any suggestions?

I'm working off the same wireless network for both, I have had the Vista computer for about a year, and the internet as worked relatively well until about two days ago. The problem existed before I installed SP1 and has persisted after the install.

I am having issues with my web browser that I hope someone can help me with. When I open IE or Firefox, it takes an EXTREMELY long time to open a webpage (about an hour).

When I open a web browser in IE, it hangs at "connecting" for about 20-25 minutes. It then moves to "waiting for http://(whateverwebsite)" for another 20-25 minutes. Then it displays the website, but hangs for another 15-20 minutes. When I open a webpage in Firefox, nothing happens at all.

I know there is nothing wrong with my Internet connection because I can still download updates at a normal speed and I have a couple of online games I can still play normally. I can also still access the Internet fine on other computers (hence this posting). The only issue is with the web browser is on my laptop.

My web browsers were working fine last night and the only change I have made was downloading McAfee. I contacted McAfee and of course they said this is not caused by their software. I conducted a virus scan with McAfee and PCTools and everything is normal.

One thing I just noticed is if I open a web browser and disconnect the Internet connection, the web browser will still go through the steps I listed in the second paragraph and display the webpage an hour later. So the webpage is still being downloaded at a normal speed, it just takes forever to be displayed.

I have already tried restarting both my computer and modem. I have also conducted the following that was posted by JohnWill:

A little bit ago, i had to uninstall zonealarm so that i could install kaspersky anti-virus to get rid of a few nasty bugs. i didnt want anything coming into my computer so i took out the ethernet cable. after removing lots of viruses, i put the ethernet cable back in and the local area connection said there was "Limited or no connectivity." so, i did all the routine stuff, unplug the modem and plug it back in, check to see if the driver was working properly, ect... however it still said limited or no connectivity. i called up my internet provider and they gave me an ip adress to manually enter under network connnections, since it was not getting one automatically. now the internet was working fine, that is: everything said it was connected and working properly but when i clicked on my browser it still would not work. then i went into run: cmd to see what was up, and a bunch of error messages came up, somthing about an illegal operation.
After a couple days of trying stuff, i did run:cmd again just for the hell of it and it works fine now.

so, my computer works absolutly fine, but i still cannot connect to the internet, even though the internet is connected. any help you can give is greatly appreciated for I am at a complete and utter lost.

Answer:Internet is working fine, but my computer still wont go online, what is going on?

When you go into Network Connections in the control Panlel, are there any unidentified connections to an IP address that is not your own? If so delete them. I would try another browser like Mozilla Firefox and see if that works. Viruses love to attack anything Microsoft related and the viruses could have destroyed the connection setting for Internet Explorer. Try Firefox and see if that works. Also make sure nothing elso is running, like Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm.

do you have a firewall installed on your system? If yes, try temporarily disabling it to see if that enables webpages to load in IE and FF.

I am running a pretty new PC with Windows 7. This weekend I updated Itunes to the latest version, and did a restart. After the restart, I was unable to connect to any website, using IE or Chrome. I was also unable to update anything (like my malware software definitions). However, my Internet connection is just fine. Under network connections everything looks good, and I am able to connect to an online chess server and play chess games, so I know there's no issue with my connection.

Now, I run my malware program and it finds and fixes 7 issues. I assume this must be what's causing the problem. After another restart, a second malware scan comes up clean, same with my virus software. However, still unable to connect to anything online other than the chess server.

Finally, I pull an older computer out of the basement, disconnect the cat 5 going to the new computer, and connect it up to my older computer. I was surprised to get the very same issue -- I was unable to connect to any website, but the Internet connection is fine. So, I have to assume that the malware was never the issue, unless it possibly reset some settings with my router or modem? The old and the new computer were never connected in any way, so it's not possible that the malware infected the old computer.

Any suggestions? I have been struggling with this for a couple of days now and really could use some help. Thanks!

Answer:I can't visit any website, even though my Internet connection is working fine.

My Name is Kaushal and I work for social media and community Team at Dell.
It seems like it's a connectivity issue with the computer.
1: Try to turn off the modem for 30 sec and disconnect the Ethernet cable from computer and restart, once the commuter starts you have the desktop window up and turn on the internet modem and once all the lite on the modem gets stable, after that please check the internet.

2: The best option would be to restart your computer and TAP F8 and it will take to black windows where in , You can select "safe mode with networking".
Once the computer starts then check the internet connection and if it works fine it means it could be something in the computer which is blocking the internet. Like an Anti Virus like MacAfee, Norton, Avast

3:If these 2 doesn’t solve the problem as you mentioned you tried the second computer, it Also doesn’t work in that case please get in touch with your internet service provider.
You will surely have the solution

Good day to all. i have a laptop with Vista:
For about two weeks now..I have not been able to use the internet correctly on the Vista laptop. On Google Chrome I get the Aw Snap message on all pages...Mozilla Firefox also doesnt work either..It finds some error, and immediately has to shut down..Programs such as Microsoft Word, PDF Architect..dont respond..but its not limited to these programs..It varies with different programs and hardware all over the computer...and they all can crash at any time..Some times they do..Some times they dont..but its consistent to the point that its impossible to work on this laptop.. I tried to use it in Safe Mode with networking..and i got the same "Aw Snap" Chrome issues..
I thought at a point..."Why dont i try to do a System Restore? I've done them before to fix issues..that'l probably fix this crap"
So I went into System Restore and to my shock, NOT ONE PRIOR SYSTEM RESTORE POINT WAS THERE..They had all been eliminated somehow..
At another point..Windows Update installed 19 new important updates all of a sudden..Didnt fix any of these visible issues..I dont know what the updates might have done in different areas of the computer..
A few days ago Windows update tried to install more updates and shut down...but it never shut just stayed there stuck on the third or fourth update for hours...i went to sleep woke up it was still there..i just shut her down by force..
and these last two days this has been appearing in the lower ri... Read more

My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.
Please help me out.

Answer:My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.

Hello. The problem could be either in the hardware or the software, so you need to test each. Perform the tests below -- it doesn't matter which one you do first.

To test the speakers, perform the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA test. If the speakers fail the test then they have failed or become disconnected. (Click the link for instructions on how to run the test.)

To test the software, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. [This test assumes that your laptop has the Realtek audio driver. If you get to step 2 and do not see "Realtek High Definition Audio" then go to the Dell support page for your model and download the Realtek driver that Dell provides for the version of Windows that the laptop is running.]
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted,... Read more

I have a networked computer that is experiencing the following issues:
1. Logmein traffic works perfectly, is it super fast and I have no issues.
2. Internet will not load, or loads impossibly slowly.
3. Dropbox does not load beyond 1KBs and then will drop out
4. Updates will not work/download
5. Downloads/ftp traffic fail

What I have tried.
1. switching ports it is plugged into on the router, to a port that another (perfectly working) computer is plugged into.
2. Changing IP address
3. Running the norton removal tool
4. Logging in under a different account
5. removing the hosts file

I have had no luck beyond that...any ideas? I am a CCNA here and this is simply driving me NUTS lol

Hey guys, I already searched but the search kept crashing. I found one closed thread on this subject using google search but it didn't contain any information on how to solve the problem. Anyway...

After the computer has been on for a while, the internet just stops working. The problem is the same in both firefox and ie. Browser will try to search for one split second and then stops and says done with a blank page. When I reboot the problem is fine. Instant messaging programs, if connected, will still function after the internet goes out.

The problem is NOT my wireless or network card, and i am still connected to the network and everything is fine. resetting the router doesn't help, nor does flipping off the wireless switch and flipping it back on.

nothing helps except restarting the computer. I really don't want to reformat over this. Any ideas? Thanks!

SOLUTION: In typical techie fashion as soon as i ask for help I solve the problem. I did crtl + r -> ncpa.cpl -> properties -> configure -> advanced -> network access -> Type in the unique address seen for the network adapter when ipconfig is run, type it without dashes. This worked immediately.

My PC is Windows 8.1 and it hasn't had internet issues before. Last night it stopped connecting to the internet. This morning is has been the same. Wireless connections are working fine but my desktop doesn't have a wireless card so i need to fix the wired issue with it.

I've tried the ethernet cable on other devices and they work, so i think it must be PC settings. I PC restored to last night 7pm and it didn't fix it. I've tried ipconfig /release and /renew and it didn't work. I've tried uninstalling AVG and turning off firewalls. I still am getting the yellow triangle with "no internet access"

IPv4 Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway

I've tried updating network card drivers and disabling and re-enabling it. Anyone able to help please?

Answer:Can't connect to internet wired from desktop. Other devices working fine.

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type or copy and paste the following command:

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

and press enter.

Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus WiFi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. ... Read more

I'm not really sure where to post this, please move if needed.

My internet connection is fine, programs such as MSN work, but when I go to either Internet Explorer it displays the 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' notice on every page that I try to connect to, also displays a 'Page loading error' notice on every page that I try to visit.

The problem appeared to start when I installed an update for Firefox, and at the time I had an old version of IE which worked fine, although the updated Firefox did not display any pages, I decided to update to IE8, because the version I had installed was pretty ancient, after which IE also began to display this problem.

I have fiddled with my firewall settings, to no avail.

Incidentally I am now using an old version of MSN explorer, which works to display webpages (which is how I am managing to post this!) I am guessing it is something to do with the updates, although I'm not an expert.

Any clues as to what I can do to fix it (I don't want to be stuck with this awful MSN browser!)

Thanks in advance

Answer:Internet connection working fine, browsers can't connect to any sites.

Try opening a command window (type cmd into yor run box and click ok)
Then type 'netsh winsock reset' and hit enter.
You should get a message 'successfully reset winsock catalogue' or similar.
then restart your computer

Hello everyone.

Currently, I live in a college apartment that has internet for the building. Not that many people are here, so I figured it would be okay. Here is a speedtest:

As you can see, it should be decent. It IS decent when I'm browsing the internet..facebook, email, youtube, etc.

It is also fine when I am downloading files.

But when I play games in Steam, it is very slow. When I search for servers, the pings are all 1000+. When I join a game, my ping is 500-600 and it's unplayable cause of how jumpy and choppy I am.

The thing about this is that when I download steam updates/files, it downloads at regular speeds!

How can I fix this? What settings do I look at? I've heard of port forwarding and things like that, but I am not sure exactly what to do.

One huge detail: This very same internet used to run the game fine, as well as World of Warcraft (I haven't tested that game with the internet now since I quit a while back), but there was a huge power out, power went out for 5 days, and now it's running slow.

So anyway, any help would be appreciated. Basically, why are games running super slow when everything else is pretty good?

Answer:Internet working fine in browsers, but in Steam games? Slow

Hello, I am new here. I have an HP Pavilion entertainment laptop. Everything was functioning just fine. Then, windows update happened. It was a critical update that cannot be undone. I performed the update. Immediately after all of the preinstaled HP software quit working. I fought and fought and I have most of it working again but all of it is very buggy and crashes a lot. HP Help and support and HP health no longer work. I had to install the vista versions and I run them in compatibility mode. They still don't work rite. Another critical update was released and then my internet port on the side stopped working. My laptop cannot connect to the internet through it but will via wireless. In the hardware manager my internet card shows up as the driver failing to load. It is Realtek PCB family controller. Uninstalls and re installs don't work. I even used a registry cleaner (registry first aid) to uninstall it so as to remove all the registry keys. Letting windows try to install the driver fails as does letting the realtek software try. Also, every reinstall just adds a number to the end of it. I am on Realtek (3) now. I need to get this driver to work but it will not. I am not seeing a whole lot about it so I guess this isn't a common problem. Everything else I have works fine so far as I can tell. I also tried using the file browser to hunt down all things realtek related and delete them. Windows just gives me the new hardware box, puts back what I del... Read more

Answer:Wired internet jack not working but wireless works just fine

Run Windows System Restore - choose a restore point prior to the installation of the Windows Update you mentioned -
START | type rstrui

What is the exact model number of the HP laptop - look on the label on the bottom.

Registry cleaners are unnecessary and can cause registry damage -

So it just happens 100% random out of no where and I get this error:

(note i ripped this image off google but this is the exact thing that happens)
so I found TWO temporary fixes.

One: unplug router / modem for 10 sec and replug

Two: Go to the network settings and disable the ethernet (note I am connected via ethernet cable, 100% wired)
disable it

Enable it BUT i have to enable it about 30 times before it enables.

When it's enabling, it doesn't enable, it shows the message that it's enabling and I refresh the background and it's still disabled. I have to keep enabling until it randomly works (if anyone knows why I have to keep enabling it 30 times for it to actually enable please let me know)
why does my internet randomly stop on my PC? it works fine on other devices while its not working on my PC and it takes forever to enable the ethernet after i disable it.

Hi, My name is Christopher Nam.
I have been using Comcast net for a while now, I think about 2-3 years. At first we paid for the wireless ver. Giving us a wireless router allowing 3 comps to access roaming and 1 via ethernet. But we started having problems where internet would just suddenly cut off or not work, sometimes it would sometimes it wouldn't randomly and the only one that really worked was via ethernet. Comcast kept saying it was our labtops not func. correctly or w/e which is total b.s. because they hook up fine wireless at cafe's, library, etc. So we got fed up and brought a tech over to check it out which he said it was fine, but i think he was just trying to get out fast. He recommended we switch to a reg. modem and buy a wireless router. So we did. Now we have a reg modem (comcast) its a motorola brand. And i bought a wireless router. Netgear wireless N-router. From there we should not of had problems of any sort. (plz dont give me crap about "well your always going to run into some kind of problem, yeah i know") Sry, but on-call techs are incredibly annoying, those of you who have had your share know what i mean. Telling you things like their reading it off some paper.
Anyways, point is Im using a reg. modem from comcast with a wireless N-router Netgear and all machines from comp to router to modem are all saying connected, working correctly, connection established, etc. But no internet. It would be really random, like 30% of time interne... Read more

I tried using my other computer and those websites worked fine, I used all 3 of my broswers Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari, can anyone help me?

Answer:Google, Hotmail, Yahoo Not Working but Internet Connection is fine HELP!

My boyfriend has also been experiencing the same thing with his computer. I thought that maybe those sites had been added to a list of blocked sites, but can't see how that is the case. They don't show up as blocked in IE's security settings.

Any help much appreciated.

I recently moved, before the move my computer worked fine, browsers were quick to connect to websites, etc. After the move, my computer seems to work just fine, until you open a browser. This issue happens with Chrome/Firefox/IE, when trying to visit websites it takes a couple minutes for them to load, and about 50% of the time the connection times out. However, games such as League of Legends works smooth with no connection errors.

I have tried the following:

1) changing the DNS to Google DNS (didn't help, if anything it made it worse)
2) Factory Reset (no difference after this)
3) network.dns.disablePrefetchf
4) Ipconfig/flushDNS
