Preferred Solution: *HELP* Can't Access Some Websites On Safe Mode & Regular

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I somehow got a Trojan on my computer running windows 7, stupid Mcafee some help you are. At first I kept getting a warning that my computer was infected when I tried to access Internet Explorer. So I restarted my computer in safe mode to try to turn off any unneeded processes that could be causing the problem and to do a system restore but the only thing that would come up was my libraries they automatically popped up my music/pictures/video nothing else no desktop background, icons, start menu, task bar... nothing! Thank god I can at least retrieve all my documents and files. Same applied when I tried to just do a regular start up is there anything I can do other than to reformat:cry? This one really has me stumped

Answer:Can only access libraries Photo/Video/Documents in safe mode and regular boot

Can you bring up task manager in either safe or normal mode? If you can, you can start a new process and type in explorer. See if that gets your desktop back.

You can try creating this disc and then booting the infected computer to it:
Kaspersky Rescue Disk.

Hi,

Got a problem with 3 websites that I can only seem to access when in windows 7 safe mode using Firefox.

I have tried possibly everything mentioned when googling the issue except for reinstalling win 7 which would be my very last option.

I know the websites are not down as i can still view them in safe mode when I try to ping them on the pc get " general failure" message.

Any tips folks.

Answer:Can access certain websites in win7 safe mode but not in normal !!!

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Maybe you have already tried a clean boot:
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Maybe you have already tried looking at your system's host file:
Hosts File : Use in Windows 7 / Vista

And resetting IE:
Internet Explorer - Reset

For these websites, you mentioned that you...
...can view them in the safe mode
...cannot ping them in the normal mode
Can you ping them in the safe mode?
Some web servers do not respond to pings.

You might also want to look at tracert. You can use if just like ping from the command prompt window. It is normal to get a few timeouts on some of the hops.

Can you share one or more of these websites with us so that we can give specific tests?

For your antivirus tool, you listed malware. Did you meant Malwarebytes? You might want to make a scan with ESET's online scanner.

As of a couple days ago, I have not been able to connect to most websites. If I do, it's after repeatedly attempting, and even then it may only load half way. Google will load most of the time, as will other low information websites. After doing a little experimenting with streaming media, I found that it will allow a small amount of information in every minute or so. While in safe mode with networking, everything internet based works perfectly fine.
I have run many different scanners (tdsskiller, avast, malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc), which do find things, but nothing that ends up fixing the issue. I am using windows 7. I am not sure if this is malware or maybe even something that is occurring due to user ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?

Hello,
I have this problem with my laptop - sometimes I cannot login - after choosing the user the screen freezes or after logging in it works only for a few minutes in regular mode (I can do things over those minutes like open firefox, but I cannot open folders, sometimes I can open the task manager or even some programs) but then it freezes and I have to shutdown the computer manually by pushing the power button. When I tried pushing crtl+alt+del I got a message "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl+alt+delete was pressed. If the operatin system does not respond, press esc or restart the computer by using the power switch". I don't know if this helps, but I try to add as much as I can. Sorry it it's not relevant - my knowledge about computers and IT is minimal.
The computer runs fine in safe mode.
So I tried system restore to a week before when the computer was still fine and it didn't work. So I reinstalled a graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics Driver) as I found on the internet that similar problems got fixed by reinstalled videocard drivers. And it worked, everything started to run smoothly again in the regular mode. As normally I allowed windows updates and after restarting my computer, the problems came back.
I assumed that the problem was the updates so I uninstalled most of them (KB2930275; KB2923961; KB2925418; KB2929755; KB2929733 and KB2918077) but the problem was still there and I was unable to unin... Read more

Hi all!

Today I started up my computer (an XP machine running SP3) and after it went through the BIOS, it showed the Windows startup screen (the Windows logo with the blue progress bar), but when that was done, it went to a black screen and won't do anything else.

I restarted and tried a few different things; Start Windows Normally, and Last Known Good Configuration both got me the same black screen.

CheckDisk ran, and it made it to the end, but froze when it said "please wait while your computer reboots" ... after waiting more than 10 minutes, i hit reset and tried to reboot it myself. It did the same Bios-Windows-blackscreen thing as before.

I also tried booting into Safe Mode, which DID work, and when I got in there I tried to do a System Restore (two, actually... for two previous dates) but both did nothing to resolve the problem. I tried simply copying my "important" files to my external HD (which it sees), but it won't copy in Safe Mode

When loading in Safe Mode, the driver list pauses and says "press esc to cancel loading of SPTD.sys" but I've tried it both ways and it doesn't make a difference that I can see.

I tried using my XP CD to boot from, which takes me into the Recovery Console, and I chose to hit "R" to repair, but when it asks me what drive I want to login to (which is C:) I don't really know what to do from there. I haven't booted from a CD before, so I assumed it would run a "Repair Wizard&... Read more

Answer:XP won't load in regular mode (black screen), but will in Safe Mode

Just a general question:1. When doing a routine scan for viruses and malware, etc. (and just generally speaking), is it better to scan in safe mode or regular mode? 2. If you scan in safe mode, is there anything that wouldn't show up (that you could potentially miss) that *would* show up in regular mode? 3. Or is safe mode just better all around, and everything is covered (plus more) that you'd find with scanning in regular mode?(I'm referring to scanning with AVG A/V, AVG Anti-Spyware, SpyBot (old version), and Ad-Aware SE.)Thanks!

Answer:Better To Scan In Safe Mode Or Regular Mode For Virus/malware?

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode designed to start Windows with minimal drivers and running processes to diagnose problems with your computer. This means some of the programs that normally run when Windows starts will not run.The Windows operating system protects files when they are being accessed by an application or a program. Malware writers create programs that can insert itself and hide in these protected areas when the files are being used. Using "Safe Mode" reduces the number of modules requesting files to only the essentials to make your computer functional. This in turn reduces the number of hiding places for malware, making it easier to find and delete the offending files. Using your anti-virus and anti-malware tools, in "Safe Mode" also speeds up the scanning process. Read "Beginners Guides: Windows XP Safe Mode Explained" and "What is 'Safe Mode' used for and why?"

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic403398.html

SweetTech just helped me clear out some malware and referred me to this forum when I ran into some interesting issues with Safe Mode:

1. I could not log into safe mode as administrator, it stalled at "getting personal settings". I am able to log on with as my regular user though.

2. In Safe Mode my C drive has 2 Gigs more of free space than in regular mode (is that normal? I though what's on the drive is on the drive no matter what mode I use...)

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop running WinXP SP3.

Many thanks for your input and advice!

Answer:Difference in disk space between Safe Mode and Regular Mode

In Safe Mode my C drive has 2 Gigs more of free space than in regular modeHow are you reading this , or from what program.I think this is only due to being in Safe Mode and in Safe mode you are not using all processes compared to Normal mode.Is the first item an issue for you, then you could have asked S /Tech during her help.Thank You -

Hi, I'm having some problems fixing my bleeping computer (Windows 10 desktop computer, to be specific) and could use some assistance.

On Friday 15 December 2017, my computer ran fine when I woke up and used it for a few minutes in the morning. Before that date, I had very few problems with my computer running; the biggest issue was some freezing occurring while playing games demanding on processing power such as Civilization 5. However, I don't believe that is related to my current issue, as I last played it on Sunday 26 November 2017, and I had no issues with it on that day.

When I returned home later that day (15 December), I found my computer stuck on a blue screen. I'm not sure quite what happened, as my computer was not used during the day at all. I restarted several times, but I was not able to even make it to the user login screen before getting a blue screen. I've received error code 0xc0000142 for every blue screen.

Startup repair did nothing to resolve the situation. I am still able to run my computer in safe mode with networking and that's how I'm writing this post. For the past two weeks, I've been using safe mode to use my computer. I've looked online for solutions, but haven't gotten much. I've had some problems in safe mode with random freezes, but at least the computer runs most of the time, although with limited functionality.

My research led me to trying Windows + R and opening msconfig.exe and disabling all services that were not... Read more

Answer:BSOD - Computer runs in safe mode, not regular mode

If you work OK in Safe Mode - but not in normal mode, it's most likely a software problem.
Hardware problems are possible, but nowhere near as likely as a software problem.

First thing I'd suggest is trying a clean boot.  It's similar to Safe Mode - but works in normal mode by disabling stuff.
It's also similar to disabling the services - but you'll disable more when doing a clean boot.
If a clean boot fixes the problem - then the problem was caused by one (or more) of the things you disabled for the clean boot.
Then it's just a matter of re-enabling things one at a time until you find the problem.
Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Start...Settings...Apps...Apps & Features - if you don't find it there, check the right sidebar for Programs and Features and see if you can remove it from there).

Backup your stuff now.  There's no telling exactly what the problem is - so a backup is the best way to be prepared in case the system dies on you suddenly.

If this doesn't work, then post back and we'll ask for some reports to try and figure out what's going on.
Good luck!

I am running vista 64bit after my son in law tried to install a game on my computer it started locking up. I can boot into reg mode and everything is fine for about three minutes, but then it locks up and nothing works except the mouse pointer moves but you can't click on anything or type. When I boot into safe mode with networking everything seems fine, I can get on the internet and do anything you can normally do in safe mode.

I started getting BSOD's right after login after boot up. I get a number of different ones and occasionally some repeat. When I come up in safe mode (with and without networking) I can function as long as I don't do too much. I've drive tested my system drive and I also did a memory test. I've also not made any changes recently. If I do too much it will BSOD though. When I start copying files off my system drive to my storage array, I BSOD if I'm doing more than a couple gigs.

I can't seem to get a consistent BSOD. I've listed most of the ones below, I haven't caugh them all.

Any help is appreciated and thank you in advance.Memory Management with Stop 1a
Cache Manager with 0x34 I think
Stop with 0X24
Stop with a 0x7f
Page fault in non-paged area with a Win32k.sys
got 2 more new ones today
special pool detected memory corruption 0xC1
pfn_list_corrupt 0x4E
Going to add new dump in reply here in a bit.

Answer:Different BSOD's upon login in regular mode and in safe mode

Lots of crashes but they are not showing any probable cause.

Do these, as a test:

Free up the startup.
Click on the Start button
Type ?msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the ?Startup? tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.
Stop nVidia automatic driver update:
Open nVidia control center.
Help> Updates. It will open the nVidia updates window.
Click the preferences tab.
Uncheck "Automatically check for updates"
Apply > OK.
If the crashes continue to occur after doing these, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

   Warning
Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

If you fail to get on the Desktop because of DV, Boot into Advanced Boot Options > Safe mode.... Read more

My computer is a HP Probook 4710s running windows xp professional w/ SP3
When I started it up it was very slow, did not make the chiming welcome sound and none of the icons or taskbar came up.
I hit ctrl+alt+del and explorer.exe was there but clearly not doing anything.  Only 21 total processes were running.  I rebooted in safemode and all of my icons appeared.  I tried a system restore but it did not work.  I can reboot in safemode with networking but the following error message appears.  "Runtime Error!  Program  c:\ProgramFiles\Hewlett-Packard\IAM\Bin\AsGHost.exe    This application has requested to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for further infomation."  I had contacted microsoft's tech support who thought the problem might be a corrupted user profile, so we attempted to create a new one and copy the files over to it, but the copy never worked and would fail part way through saying, "cannot access files" and then stop.  So those profiles were deleted and now I'm back to not being able to boot up with just the plain old default ADMIN user.  I don't want to shut down my computer since I'm worried if I do, it will stop booting up in safe mode too.  It's done that before, it cycles through all the files and then hangs up for about 3 minutes and automatically reboots.  Any suggestions?

She recently bought a laptop (which runs Vista) and is networked into the same system. For this laptop, she purchased ESET NOD32 Antivirus4. When she heard about my problem, she thought that it might be a good idea to install this same program to her PC before I reattached to the network to fix my problem. So we did that. Unfortunately, we didn't heed the extremely mild warning that there "may be conflicts" with the McAfee already on her system, and neglected to uninstall it.

As soon as I was finished with the uninstall, I attempted to enter the Add/Remove Programs menu to remove McAfee. It told me to wait while it populated the list, and ten minutes later, I gave up. The computer had frozen, so I did a hard shut down... and have not been able to do anything since!

We can restart it, sure, but it freezes somewhere between the time it launches McAfee and the time it launches Eset - any attempts to do anything either fail or cause the freeze. We of course tried booting in safe mode, but cannot get the options screen (we tried the tapping and holding methods for both F8 and F5).

Incidentally, her computer's symptoms do not resemble mine in the slightest.

So here are my que... Read more

Answer:why can i go on the internet in safe mode but not in regular mode?!?!?!?

You might be experiencing a sever infection or a system corruption ( the files that dont run in safe mode but real mode might have been corrupted such as drivers ) but these are all assumptions right now. Please get into safe mode with networking. Click on greyknights link below and follow the instructions for a malware clean-up. Get a hjt log and post it under hjt log help forum. Lets see what happens. Let us know.

We had a power outage recently and even though the backup kicked in, our MS Outlook 07 (running on XP Pro) will only open in Safe Mode with limited features. When I reboot, I get an error message saying Outlook wasn't closed properly. It will not load at all unless I click on the offer to operate in safe mode. How do I get the system to function normally in regular mode with full features again? I'd appreciate any how-to help anyone can provide. THANKS!

Answer:Outlook 07 Safe Mode vs Regular Mode

Reinstall. It has been too badly damaged. Your settings have been preserved as has your mail, in most cases... but it is still wise to use Outlook recovery software (see www.majorgeeks.com and others) before you perform the reinstall... your files in process at the time of the failure are likely lost.

Hi i have been having problems with my 5 year old computer for maybe 6 months, and I have some serious problems with it. One problem is, when the computer started up, it makes this click noise, like someone pushing a button. Me being a complete amatuer, ignored it until finally it totally effed up my computer. My computer wont go into windows xp, it wont even go to safe mode. I can only go to the system restore screen, and i cant even restore my computer since it says " cannot format user portion !" Any help?

I already have all my info stored on a network, so i dont mind like wiping it totally clean, I really just want to delete some stuff on there. (some games and some programs, cuz of serials) please help^^

Answer:No safe mode, No regular

That clicking noise is probably a sign your hard drive took a dive, along with your symptoms, and you need a new one.

Hi all,

We were recently having issues with the new versions of Silverlight. My girlfriend tried to download an older version. Apparently the sight she tried to download it from was rogue. I tried to uninstall it (Silverlight) without success. I thought if I went into safe mode, I might be able to get rid of it that way. However, I was not able to boot into safe mode. The computer just went to black screen. I was able to reboot in normal mode by turning off the computer and restarting so I went into msconfig and checked the system boot box in an effort to force reboot in safe mode. Now it wont boot in normal or safe mode. (black screen) If i could uncheck the system boot box, the computer would not be trying to boot into safe mode, so it seems I’m stuck there. Any thoughts?

Whenever I try to boot into xp, one of two things happens.
I try to boot into normal mode or last known good config, and it goes to the login screen, I click on my account, it shows just the desktop, no icons, just the wallpaper, and then goes back to the login screen.
This repeats everytime I click on my account login.

When I try to boot it into safe mode, it flashes something about realtek boot and asks me to hit shift and some other variety of keys but then it disappears as soon as I have a chance to fully read it, it just loops back to the mode select screen, I don't even get to the login screen.

What should I do?

I had a number of infections that spybot and malwaybytes found and fixed, McAfee didn't find anything. I kept looking around for some of my same issues that still persisted, all files hidden, administrator tools empty, cannot run a system restore. I came across your forum that referenced one of my issues and I downloaded combofix, ran it and while it was running the BSOD came up. I tried to reboot in safe mode but still receive BSOD.

At this moment I am runnig ckdsk /r from the recovery console.

I orginally posted in malware forum but I think I need to resolve the boot issue before I can address any malware issues, is that correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OS:XP

Answer:BSOD cannot boot in regular or safe mode

If the chkdsk doesn't help which it might.

7B is often associated with SATA drivers. If you can find your SATA configuration in BIOS, it might be worth a try to set it to ATA or IDE emulation.

If you give the model of computer or motherboard we might be able to figure out where the setting would be in BIOS. Usually it is under Drives or something like that.

I'm not sure that the setting switch on a running OS will help but it couldn't hurt to give it a quick try.

Hey guys,

I know this has been outplayed over and over again but I was hoping someone could help me in my particular case. I have just updated to Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit this morning, and now I am having issues connecting to the internet. Actually it seems to connect fine (opens Windows Messenger and everything) but says Page Cannot Be Displayed if I try and open something in Internet Explorer. I searched a few forums and found that I should try it in Safe Mode and voila it worked. The other forums stated that that usually means that I have some 3rd party software blocking my connection...but how do I find out which one it is?

I have been having the same problem I think. Using wireless I can connect in safe mode but not regular. When I try to connect it say's page cannot be displayed. It shows the internet is connected but it will not connect. I am able to connect to my wireless network with my phone and it works fine. Toshiba said since the laptop connects in safe mode that there is a program blocking the connection and that program needs to be found. I did not want to pay them $100 for a 1 time fix. So here I am. the above post sounds similar to what I am experiencing. does it sound like the above fix would work for this issue.

I recently came home to my computer off and when I went to turn it back on, it started up with a black screen after the windows logo with just the cursor available. Things like ctrl-alt-delete did nothing so I tried booting up in safe mode which ended up with same black screen and cursor.

I then went to search the internet for possible fixes and have done/verified the following:

Used boot CD and ran Start-up repair, told me to remove any mp3 players or USB devices and try starting again, didn't work (nothing was connected in the first place). The start-up repair log appears to identify no problems with the system.

It's not a hardware issue, the drive itself has been checked on another computer and I've already used a new drive and installed a new copy of windows using the same computer.

Not a virus issue, scanned the drive for viruses and did a chkdsk on it, neither of which turned up anything.

Unfortunately there are no restore points saved so I can't just revert to an older profile.

Since I can access the drive on another computer, is there any program I could run to try and fix the problem? This seems to be the only thing that hasn't been covered in other topics similar to this one which I've found online.

This is my last resort so any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks!

This is baffling me to no end. I can boot up fine in safe mode, and with networking. But I still manage to get a BSOD not too long into the session. I managed to capture a video of it and in the Technical information of the blue screen it said "STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0X81CB6169, 0X807F09BC, 0X807F05AO)", not sure if that's of any use... I've also uploaded the minidump file if you can use that information.

The other issue is the OS doesn't load at all in normal boot. It'll show the windows logo animation screen, then go black, and do nothing until I hit the power button. These problems started arising not long after I installed W7 onto the computer (acer aspire, amd athlon 3800+ CPU, installed a dedicated nvidia 9700 gt card overtop of the dedicated one (the problem was there still before that), 1.5 gig of ram).

If anyone could please help me with this it'd be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello,

After reading some of the more recent posts, it seems I may have a problem similar to the following post "871963-browser-hijacked-keeps-redirecting." I think I was infected about 4 days ago. One night I received an error when logging off my laptop, I think I hit end program so it would shut down, the next day when I turned my laptop on I noticed the problem.

My symptoms include:

-Blue Screen when trying to boot to Safe mode - STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x80537009, 0xF7AEA508, 0xF7AEA204)
-Windows Media Center not working... when you double click, it does show an instance running in processes, it just doesn't ever open.
-Initially, I was getting redirects in firefox when using google or bing. Now I am getting tabs that randomly open of their own accord.

I too have CA security installed... have always been less than impressed with it's ability to detect and block anything. That's keep the free version of malwarebytes on my computer for backup. However, the current piece of malware infecting my computer has been illusive. In attempt to detect it, I have run the following:

1) CA (of course)
2) malwarebytes - I have a log
3) avira (online CD and rescue CD w/o update)
4) kaspersky (rescue CD w/o update) - free online scan is currently down - I have a log of rescue cd
5) bitdefender & chkrootkit (online quickscan and rescue CD w/o update)
6) trendmicro housecall (online)
7) superantispyware - I have a log
8) GMER - I have a log

Answer:BSOD on Safe mode - No load on Regular boot

10 memory dumps - 6 different STOP errors, 5 different drivers blamed

I would suspect that there's a compatibility or a hardware issue here.
The most likely problem is with your wireless USB adapter as the driver is dated from 2006.

Please uninstall the software for your wireless USB adapter and see if that stops the BSOD's. If so, then either download the latest, Win7 driver for the USB adapter or (if there isn't a Win7 driver) purchase a new adapter. I'd suggest a PCI/PCIe adapter that plugs into your motherboard (rather than a USB adapter) as they have less problems than the USB one's.

Hello all,

My wife's laptop (which is running Windows XP service pack 2) recently got hit with super anti virus pro. I ran malware bytes on the computer and on restart the computer would hang on a black screen with the cursor. I restarted in safe mode and was able to get back into normal mode after I used msconfig to disable all the programs that were running on startup. After re-starting I was able to log in, in normal mode. I also used msconfig and changed the startup selection to diagnostic startup.

Now windows explorer wasn't running, so I restarted in safe mode. Windows explorer won't run now in safe mode either. I restarted one last time in safe mode with command prompt. The command prompt works and when I tried to use that to run explorer.exe it came up for a second under windows task manager and immediately closed. I'm pretty much at a loss of what to do now.

hello, my computer's screen froze the other day and now when I turn it on again it tells me that it didn't shut down properly. Gives me the options of continuing on safe or regular mode. What should I do?? how do I get it back to normal?

Answer:safe mode or regular mode??

Boot to Safe Mode, then shut down normally, then boot to normal mode.
While in Safe Mode you can attempt to troubleshoot the issue, and in Safe Mode with Networking you can even update your drivers (such as your video drivers).

Hey guys, I have been reading around and posted a bit on reddit and still no solution, although it seems like it should be simple.

2 weeks ago tuesday my work laptop had regularly scheduled windows updates that everyone loves to see right before they shut down. the next day it began with the circle of death after 1-3 min after start up, sometimes upwards of 30 minutes of functionality. but eventually the circle of death comes and i can't click on anything, however the mouse will still function.

i have gone back to every restore point possible and still get the freezing. i have updated/ran MSE in safe mode as well.

It's not a huge deal if I have to reformat, I just really feel like the solution shouldn't be that hard.

Anyways, thanks for your time.

Can someone help? This started acting up around 1:30pm (February 3rd) at school. Everything works with a Live CD (Ubuntu 8.0.4) and nicely with Safe Mode Networking and a System restore.

I tried uninstalling my drivers and updating them and it didn't help. Any other options?

Laptop specs (Inspiron 1520) :

Core 2 Duo T7200
160GB HDD 7200RPM Sata
Intel Wireless Pro a/b/g (I think it was 395 or something)
10/100Mbit NIC
8600M GT 256MB
And of course Windows XP Pro SP3

This was working fine before Tuesday and then it just decides to bug me.

I'm working on a coworkers computer that runs Vista 64 Professional, and we cannot get Outlook to run. Here are the errors that its given me.

1. Microsoft Outlook has stopped working (A problem causes the program to stop correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.).

2. Outlook failed to start correctly last time. Starting Outlook in safe mode will help you correct or isolate a startup problem in order to successfully start the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode.

3. Outlook failed to launch in safe mode. Do you want to start Detect, and repair?

- It still wont run, and I've tried these commands in Run:

outlook /clearviews: Gave me the error "the command line arguement is not valid. verify the switch you are using."

outlook /safe: Gave me error 3 that I noted above.
- Then I tried repair in the Programs/Features section, and that didnt seem to have any effect.

- I've also looked in the task manager to make sure that I was not running multiple instances of the application.

- I tried to reinstall w/out uninstalling (she doesn't want to lose any of her saved information).

This is a new thing that just started happening after the weekend, and my guess is that its due to one of the automatic updates?

Safe mode gets only so far in loading drivers and then reboots (suspiciously stops at the AVG driver, hangs and reboots). There is no restore disks for this laptop. Is there a way to stop certain drivers from loading during safe mode? Any help or guidance is appreciated.

Answer:Remove viruses and now windows won't boot regular or in safe mode

Hi.
157 virus? It's seem that avg is not working well or you make something wrong.
Try these steps,in this order,
Advanced Boot Options
System Restore
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
Then if its possible remove avg and use this Good and Free system security combination.

Yesterday I started getting the "Congratulations, you won" audio as well as some other adverts randomly playing without any popups or browsers open. I tried a series of malware removals (Malwarebytes, spybot seek and destroy) I got hijackthis and tried to look for out of place items by matching with others posts. Anyways, did all that and then then ran an antivirus scan (AVG free) and went to bed. When I woke up I was at the Start windows normal/safe/safe with network/last known screen so I went to last known. When I did that, it never booted just goes to the windows logo and then blue screens saying memory issue or update BIOS. Tried to boot in safe mode, same story. When I run the diagnostics test it says "Error loading operating system." All remedies online so far require getting online (computer wont start) and downloading BIOS updatesHELP!!!

Answer:Congratulations virus now cannot boot (regular or safe mode) I get the BSOD

Hi, figsahaas42 It seems that the issue is related to the Master Boot Record due to the Whistler Trojan. You will need the Windows VISTA Installation DVD to fix this. Please be advise that there is always a slight possibility that you may lose your Data repairing the Master Boot Record. You must access the Vista Recovery Environment throughout the Vista installation DVD.At the Install Windows screen, select Repair your computer. Then the command prompt.Type the following command at the prompt, then hit Enter.bootrec /fixmbrOnce finished, type Exit and press Enter. Restart the computer in Normal Mode.

Curious where the issues could be. I posted last night that when I was trying to run DISM or SFC a small second window would appear and close and then the processs would not start at all. It would just sit there and do nothing. The other thing is I could not close those cmd windows where sfc and dism were not working even via task manager. I was going to do a reset of windows, but I thought I would give something one last try. I booted into safe mode with networking and dism and sfc ran perfectly and completed. I am at work right now. I haven't tried to go to desktop on regular boot. I was going to do a couple more sfc dism when I got home to make sure things were fixed. My question is what could cause dism and or sfc to run perfectly in safe mode, but not on regular boot?

Answer:Strange-DISM SFC work in safe mode, but not in regular boot?

I have an HP desktop, and I was on my computer. My foot accidentally hit the power strip off (which everything was plugged in to).
For some reason, every time I try to turn the computer back on, the blue HP screen comes up, then the black screen which asks me if I wanted to open in (safe mode, safe w/ networking, safe w/ command prompt, or open windows normal)
Whenever I click safe mode or open normal, it takes me to the Windows XP loading...

It loads, however when it's done loading, the computer RESTARTS! and does the same things again...
Perhaps it was a disk failure? What can I do to fix this?

Please help!

Answer:Computer keeps restarting when tying to open regular/safe mode?

as you start the computer, try pressing the F8 key up and down to see if you can get in to safe mode that way.

My friend has a Windows 7 Starter-based netbook. He has asked me to help but I can't seem to find where the problem is.
Each time I try to boot the PC, the log-in screen appears, I provide the credentials, and then the white screen appears and nothing can be seen or done. The only thing I can do is pressing ctrl+alt+del, which gives me the normal lock screen, but from here I can only lock the PC or turn it off, nothing else works.

If I try to boot up in safe mode, the PC, after asking for credentials, reboots within 10-15 seconds.

Can't seem to figure out what to do.

Please, could you help me?

Hello everyone!

My friend just gave me her laptop to fix(does this happen to anyone else???). The laptop is an Acer Extensa 5620-6830 here are the specs

Intel Core 2 Duo T5250
1 GB DDR2
200 GB HDD
Windows Vista Home Premium

I power on the notebook and it goes through the POST, then begins to load Vista. After about 21/2 minutes it reboots and goes through the whole process over again.

The next time I booted the computer up it exclaimed, Windows failed to load - Choose to either 1.) Start in recovery mode or 2.) start windows normally. I select recovery mode and it gets past the windows loading screen; but then it just displays a black screen. Nothing ever happens.... reboot.

Then I try to boot to safe mode, thinking maybe there is a faulty driver causing the crash. It seems to load all the windows files, but then *BAM* BSOD.... system reboots. I'm not sure how to get to the minidumps if i can't even power up the computer.

Further, any mode from the F8 list crashes the same way.

And now for the worst part, she told me she purchased the machine at a retail giant, whose name I won't mention. She claims that there was never any disks that came with the laptop. No Windows Vista startup cd :/

I'm not sure what to do now.... any ideas?

thanks
maX

Answer:Vista Fails to load, Regular/Safe/Recovery Mode all fail

I was able to disable the automatic restart on system crash. (I didn't see it in the options after I pressed F8)

The BSOD error reads: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

***EDIT***

I did some research on the error. It appears I need to run the chkdsk utility. Is it possible, b / c I can't get into windows, to create a boot disk which will run chkdsk? or is that a dumb question?

My firewall (verizon) pops up messages with numerous progs trying to access the internet (here are a few... 25vj7Q.exe d0vTE1Im.exe R3IR2wkb.exe NmNva775.exe). From safe mode, I ran SuperAntispyware, Spybot, Malwarebytes, Combofix, MGTools, then HiJack this.
They remove numerous things, mostly trojans. I reboot into safe, and scan again...everything comes through clean.
I reboot into regular windows and scan...clean. Then within a few hours (sometimes minutes) I start getting infected again, firewall is activated, and rescan reveals virus.

Hi,

I didn't turn my laptop off, which is normal when I'm downloading stuff, I didnt do any updating lately. When I woke up this morning, my computer can't access the internet. I can't log onto Skype, can't access web using IE, Firefox( my regular one used the most), a chines one I sometime use for chinese websites. I have another 2 computers in the house and they both are fine, can access all programs as usual. After using restore point, I reset all firewall( remove all firewall), removed all blocking programs, redownloaded IE and Firefox on another computer and re-install on the one with problem, nothing.

I thought it was network issue. even though it shows 65% connectivity, I tried to reset the router, the whole works, nothing. other 2 computers still fine. I put in my d-link use wireless thing, have connection, websites still cannot be accessed.

I finally tried IE 64 bit, which worked. So I thought, ok, maybe a clitch. i tried other programs again, nothing. For some strange reason, only ie 64 can access the net on this computer now, which I HATE!!!!!

There is no firewalls on router or otherwise. ISP is not limiting, as other computers are fine.

Please, someone advise me what is going on. I can't for the life of me figure what is wrong and I can't stand IE 64 anymore, I need firefox back in my life!!!

Answer:Can't access Firefox, IE (regular mode), can in IE 64bit only

I have a fairly new Asus G74S i7 laptop running Win 7 64. I cannot go to some websites - but they can be browsed ok in safe mode. For example - I can't go to CNN.com or Zone Alarm - but I can go to MSNBC, Avast, etc.

I've tried going to the numeric IP to bypass DNS, but that doesn't work either.

One thing that seems a bit strange (as if this wasn't strange enough already) - If I try to ping a site that is known not to exist - like xylaseighjlag.com - I get a timeout, as one would expect.

BUT if I ping a site I can't go to, such as Crestron.com, I get "General Failure".

It seems to be getting worse, as I was able to go to Zone Alarm last week, but not this week.

It does the same thing on different ISP's, and three different browsers - IE, Firefox, and Chrome. I even tried tethering off my tablet using Bluetooth and WiFi - same results.

I've tried all the usual fixes - Checking the hosts file, resetting IE, looking at Whats' Running, trying various Registry fixes - CCleaner, Glary, System Mechanic, etc. I've tried every malware client I can find, including MB, Avast, MS, etc.

MB did find a couple of dubious things, which were removed, but this had no effect.

I've researched/tried every fix online I could find - no effect.

If I do a clean boot of Win 7 without actually going into safe mode it still doesn't work.

I tried doing a System Restore, but for some reason all of the earlier restore points vanished.

Short of re-installing Windows, does anyone hav... Read more

I am having trouble with my internet connection in regular mode on my Acer Espire 15, it connects but says limited access, i have tried reinstalling the network, but still wont work. The internet works fine in safe mode. Wondering if anyone knows how to fix this problem. It is very annoying and I am only able to use the internet in safe mode at the moment. Thanks for any help you may be able to offer...

Answer:internet limited access in regular mode works fine...

In this case, it is recommended to perform a clean boot to check if one or more applications in your computer are causing conflict when you work in normal mode. To know how to perform clean boot and to troubleshoot issues while in clean boot environment, you can refer to the instructions mentioned on the following link:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135 Hope this will help you.

Hi,

I have a desktop Windows 10 x64 machine that's been working fine for months/years. It was automatically updated from Win7 last year.

This morning I replaced the 2x4GB DDR3 memory with 2x8GB DDR3. This seemed to work though for some reason it works at 800MHz instead of the 1600MHz that the memory supports. The BIOS shows mem freq 1600 as expected. But this is the smaller issue. The PC worked booted fine.

When everything seemed to working as expected, I was still bothered by the slow startup and login times. Now with 16GB I had expected these times to improve.
I installed Windows SDK performance recording tool and set it to record the boot sequence and restarted the PC.

Windows failed to boot twice (UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP) and went into the auto diagnostic repair mode. Restore just spins until I lose patience. I did manage to boot in safe mode and disable the recording. It did not help.

Running sfc/scannow "did not find any integrity violations".

I also managed to uninstall the Windows SDK/Perf Rec (by restarting the MSI service) - to no avail.

I ran the Windows memory test, but when it's done it reboots, the reboot fails, and I never did see the results.

I replaced the new RAM with the original ones, but this did not make any difference (BIOS setting are as they were originally).

I'm totally stumped!!

Please advise,

Thanks!!

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Lenovo will also come with a trial ware program - cant remember which
I would also remove AVG 2013 - using the removal tool - see below

have a read here and post back as much info as possible

Normally are you using wireless - and in safe mode with networking - are you still talking wireless

can you connect to the router with a cable and if so does that work in normal mode ?

Hi all,

I've had this problem since yesterday (5/25/15) and haven't managed to find a fix for it yet. The issue is that although I have internet access--and Google even boots up how it normally would--I am unable to access websites. I am able to search perfectly fine, but the connections "time out" and do not connect. When I decided to troubleshoot, I received "-website name- is online, but network is unable to connect". I am still able to access the internet on my phone and other devices.

Thank you for any and all help!

UPDATE: I now am unable to view the Google homepage on startup with Google Chrome.

hi
my son was on the internet on his IBM Thinkpad when numerous pop ups flashed up on the screen.

since then the program/document files on the c drive were all hidden, and we have been unable to get onto the internet.
i have managed to find the document files, but still no internet, and we are unable to access safe mode, or safe mode with networking.

when you try to go into safemode or safe mode with networking you get message saying a problem has been detected
you then have the option to go to the 3 safe mode types again. however this appears to be a never ending circle of error message, and back to this page!
the computer will start normally

any help will be most appreciated

I have windows 7 enterprise 90 day trial,I downloaded it from microsoft site.I start safe mode like usually,it loads drivers.then a welcome logo apears and restarts.what's the problem?

Answer:can't access safe mode.

Are you sure that the trial hasn't expired?

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

first of all, I'm using my Linux OS to access this forum bcuz my windows vista home edition is totally trashed due to the vista antivirus 2012 virus. I can't even get into safe mode. I did get rid of it once using safe mode with command prompt about 3 weeks ago and now it's back with a vengence. So if I'm expected to use a windows .exe file to try a fix, I'm not even sure I can put it on a flash drive from here since I'm not very adept at Linux. So far I haven't been able to use any of the apps that I've downloaded for windows on Linux. I've tried tweaking the settings to accept them but have been unsuccessful.

Been asked to look at Father-in-Laws little desktop - a little HP Compaq 8000 Elite - and I'm a bit stuck so would appreciate some help.  It's running XP Pro SP3.

The initial fault was "no internet access" and this apparently occured while updating his McAfee subscription.  I wasn't aware he even had that - I know the machine originally had AVG Free and last time I looked at it was running MSE

I saw a reference to Adobe in his McAfee licence so I'm guessing it's been bundled with some Adobe product he's downloaded (he into still photography).

I reset IE8 (it had a bunch of toolbars) and internet access is OK now.  However I've tried McAfee, AVG Free and MSE and none will run.

The other thing that concerns me is that I can't access safe mode.  I think (but could be missing something here) there's only one account , Administrator. It has a fairly simple password but doesn't work (and neither does blank) in safe mode.

Help please!

Answer:No AV will run & can't access safe mode

Sorry to reply to my own topic, but I'm concerned there's something dodgy stopping the above computer from working properly.

I worked throught the steps at http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/malware-removal-guide#TOC-Preparation-for-Removal but AdwCleaner won't scan - just sits there doing nothing.

My second PC is a Fujitsu Scaleo P. running XP. Closed down as normal but will not start. It gets to a window which says it was not closed down properly(it was), says to use the up and down arrows to access Safe Mode etc. Trouble is the arrows are not working. Tried a different keyboard but it was no different.Inserted makers recovery disc to try a repair but it is ignored and the PC still goes to the same window and keeps cycling. I can access the boot menu through F11, but can't get any further.Any help very welcome.

I'm working on the family computer running Windows XP SP3 which appears to be horrible bogged down with viruses. So much so that when I simply tried reinstalling avg the next time I rebooted the computer I found myself unable to do anything other than log in. From that point the system freezes.

I've been trying to get into safe mode since then, holding down f5 or f8 at startup brings me to the boot selection screen but if I select anything other than Start Windows Normally it will just restart and bring me back to the same screen. I've also been unable to get into msconfig from windows.

Any tricks to help would be greatly appreciated, I really don't want to do a system restore before I'm at least able to get the files off the hard drive (family pictures, etc.)

Hi guys, nothing on my PC is working I can surf the net via Firefox and that is literally about it.
The windows search bar, while clicking inside doesn't allow me to search so that doesn't work.
When in the start menu and pressing settings the screen comes up as if it wants to load and then the windows disappears.
I CAN access control panel and as soon as I go to 'system restore'it does nothing.
I shift+restart and my 'safe mode'is just a blank blue screen with no settings what so ever!
Malwarebytes brings up nothing.
Windows defender finds nothing.
This is a virus... Or something I just find it ironic how whichever setting I try to access in order to sort this the computer is unresponsive!
This all started the other night when I allowed a friend of mine to plug his mp3 player in to my PC which I have a strong feeling was riddled with virus and malware.
How can I beat this? I cannot lose my stuff.
Please help, I can't give you any information because my PC simply will not perform the tasks, however there are previous threads and topics by me which contain all the info about my PC and spec if you look on my profile.
Any more info please ask!

I was recently on this forum working through a issue it was closed.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/506957/computer-very-slow-on-startup/

I was recently following the advice left me at the end of the forum as my computer was acting funny and it kept comming up with virus hits.  I was running a avast virus scan.  Following the scan It was recommended a boot sector scan so I let it do its thing. I had done this before without any issues.  I think this made it worse as now my desktop has been reset and I cannot get anything to run correctly except in safe mode.  I do and did not want run restore as my restore points were corrupted making the situation worse.  I think I may have made it worse by following the advise of advast and am not sure if I am still infected or something else is wrong with my machine.  I am not sure where to go from here and any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Again thanks for every thing.

is the reason your trying to get into safe mode because the computer freezes? Why are you trying to get into safe mode do you have other problems? Why i ask is some systems use the ctrl key to enter safe mode rather than F8.

As the title suggests, I'm unable to access Safe Mode by pressing F8 on the startup. Instead, an error message is displayed briefly, and the system reboots itself again.

I've had some problems with my PC recently and I'm wondering whether scanning the system in Safe Mode may uncover something I am currently unable to find.

In the last couple of years, we've had some problems with viruses etc. and I'm guessing they may have had some effect on the registry or something, possibly? I've also had a tamper with it myself, deleting certain values while following a guide I found online.

I'd imagine this may be a rather common occurance among many PC users, so I'm hoping to find some other suggestions and ideas for me to try...

Thank you for your help, guys. It's very much appreciated.
