Best And Easiest Spam Filter?

Question: Best And Easiest Spam Filter?

Hello:

I am in need of a good, simple pop spam filter.

Here is the catch: This would be for a recently widowed person who does not know much about her computer(her husband took care of that stuff).

Ideally I would recommend going to Thunderbird and training her email box, but what I need is something that would filter most spam out on its own that can plug into outlook express or outlook.

I know there is no single silver bullet that would get rid of all the spam, but I'd like to be able to cut most of it out.

Thanks in advance

Greg

Preferred Solution: Best And Easiest Spam Filter?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

anyone got a list of spam words / key phrases that they use for a spam filter?

You know, a list of words that, if contained in an email, the spam filter will delete the email.

I'm using spamguard and need a list... I'm assuming someone has one... IF not, lets all contribute and create one for us to use!!

Question: SPAM Filter

I use a web account to access most of my mail.

But some of my friends are having severe problems with SPAM MAIL.

One of them even purchased Norton Internet Security 2005 package, which includes:
Firewall (I like ZoneAlarm better)
AntiVirus (I use AVG... better)
Privacy control ?
Spam Filter - which hooks into the email client (Eudora, Outlook)

The Spam Filter doesn't seem to be doing a good job... anything that works better? Or is there a setting in Norton that may help?

These idiotic spammers are making email bloody useless!
PS: Also, Perfered "child" filtering program... I've heard of such names as cyber nanny and cybersitter... It would need to block sites, but also log attempts to sites.

Answer:SPAM Filter

For filtering, I know of a freeware application called iProtectYou .

The spam filtering can probably be adjusted in the spam filter application. For me, I like the filter found in Pegasus e-mail client. It is much safer than Outlook, a lot more flexible, and is freeware. Also, it is a bit more complicated to use than OE.

I've had friends tell me that K9 is a good spam filter.

Question: Spam Filter

I did think about posting this topic under the Web & Email section of the forum, but I've had a lot of help from you guys involved in the Security section, so I value your opinion.

Recently, I have had a marked increase in the amount of spam email (I don't need another watch; I don't need any medications; I don't require an online degree in less than 2 weeks, and I don't want to see my next door neighbours daughter try out her new webcam!)

I am running Win XP and using Outlook Express 6.

Anyone recommend a good filter?

Rhynos

Answer:Spam Filter

depends on how much you want to pay.

most spam filters work on a Bayesian filtering system, meaning that the software "learns" what is spam and what is not spam by attributes of the e-mails. There'll be a time when you'l have to manually tell it what is spam and what's not, and there'll be false positives and false negatives, but they'll go down (quickly) after a few days of use.
I haven't used these products personally, but here's a few reputable and good products (did research on them). http://spamassassin.apache.org/ Spam-Assassin
http://www.spamihilator.com/
Spamihilator

just run a google search for "spam filter" for more

Also, may I suggest switching to Mozilla Thunderbird? Fully configurable, easy to use, plus has a very good built-in Bayesian spam filter. http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

Question: Spam Filter

My server has a filter and all the Viagara ,University degrees, Mortgages etc no longer hit my account. However I am now inundated with American Share Tips where the sending address changes all the time and reporting as Spam has no effect. However 90% of these are addressed to mainly three accounts ,none of which are mine, and apparently arrive on my acccount because my account is I am told by the Server BC in the original e-mail. My account must be BC three times because invariably these e-mails arrive in threes. It used to be fairly easy to tick and delete all these as Spam on the web but my Server is now introducing a new (improved!) web Mail Account where the delete process is much longer. Is there a free Spam Filter that can pick up e-mails on the web account not addressed to me and put in the Web Mail Spam Folder?

Answer:Spam Filter

Mailwasher with some suitable rules; click hereor Magic Mail Monitor - less than 200kclick hereI use MMM3 and have filters to auto-delete any emails including the words `micro` and `cap` (amongst another 20 or 30 rules) - they seem to catch most of the `penny stock` spam, the text ones anyway. GIF images are easy to catch and delete too, another way of hiding spam from filters.

Answer:Spam Filter

Why don`t you set a Message Rule (Tools>Message Rules> Mail) Or add the senders to your blocked senders list? The latter will prevent delivery. Not Knowing your ISP, you may also be able to log into your account and set the filter(s) there.

Question: Spam Filter

Whenever I come across a spam-filter software or application (from download.com) I find that they function only with Outlook and Outlook Express.
Is there any spam-filter software for web based emails like yahoo or hotmail?

Answer:Spam Filter

Web base e-mails like Yahoo and MyWay have there own spam filters. Any SPAM you receive, you can identify it as SPAM and it will be blocked after that.

MailWasher can block SPAM for OE or Hotmail accounts. There is a version you can buy, but I've been using the free version for a couple of years with OE. You can get either version here:

http://www.mailwasher.net/

The free version is limited to one account and doesn't work with Hotmail.

Question: Which Spam Filter?

I am now totally fed up with all the crap that arrives daily in my inbox. I get at least 50 emails a day to my home account and most, if not all of them, are spam.

Although it is quite cathartic deleting email after email, the theraputic effects have become less of a novelty.

Honestly, whether "Molly likes it huge" or not, at my age I do not need to be "rock hard for hours".

Aslo, I have better things to do with my money than buy a Rolex, real or not.

So, I need a competant anti-Spam program and I'm considering investing in Spam Arrest.

Does anyone know if it's any good or would you reccommend something else?

Answer:Which Spam Filter?

First, I would see if your ISP (your internet provider) offers free software for filtering spam. Many do, and often they offer pretty good products. If it doesn't offer any, check out this listing/review of free spam filters:
http://email.about.com/od/windowsspamfightingtools/tp/free_spam.htm
To some degree, it depends on what email program you use - Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc.

I have been using Thunderbird for well over a year now and in general like it very much.

The problem I have is the spam filtering. It is only doing a so-so job.

I am not having any false positives but the adaptive filtering does not seem to detect 60% of the junk.

For example, I have been constantly marking as junk "Watch Replica Spam", but I keep getting five or more of this type of mail every day. If I could just filter out the word "replica", I could eliminate most junk of this type.

In addition much of the Vallium, Cialis and other unwanted "pharmaceutical" mail is not being filtered (although about half of it is being filtered).

To sum it all up, I am still getting much mail that is almost identical to mail I have previously marked as junk.

I believe I have set the Junk Mail control settings and adaptive filter properly. Is their anything else I can do?

Answer:Thunderbird Spam Filter

Do you ‘create filter from message’ when you get these Replica emails? You probably know this already, but here’s the info’ just in case: select the message [don’t open it] and click on Message on the menu bar, click on ‘Create filter from message’ and enter the word replica or whatever you want – you can make two or more separate filters for the same message, to catch everything this pest sends you – then tell it where to put the message and mark it as Junk. That should send it straight to Junk or Trash, according to where you directed it when you set up T’bird.

Hey guys,

As the network specialist/administrator here at my credit union, I have the responsibility of researching out the best corporate spam filter as we have been receiving increased complaints of users receiving spam. Several of us here use SpamBayes spam filter, but that is only client-side filtering. Instead of setting this up on every single computer we have (70+ right now, plus we are opening up a branch in the spring which will add about another 20, with other branches in the planning stages), I thought it best to go with a corporate spam filter that resides on our Exchange 2000 server, running on a Windows 2000 Server machine.

Of course, when I want to research something like that, one of the first things I think about is the [H]ardForum. I am assuming that some of you guys have experience with this, so I'm gonna ask for your opinions. What have you guys used for corporate spam filtering, how much does it cost, how does it perform, and why is it the best in your opinion?

Thanks in advance for your help...it is much appreciated!

Jeremy

You can use GMail as a spam filter and retain your current email account, You configure gmail to fetch your email from your current provider and then get your email from GMail. Keep your existing SMTP settings and you'll still be able to send as your existing account. There directions on doing this on: http://www.computerhope.com/tips/tip133.htm. The easiest way would be to call your ISP and create a new email address and abandon the old one.

I'd like a spam filter that works with AOL version 7 ( preferably UK version). I don't know how that differs from the USA version but I liked it better than the Australian version 7 so I installed UK, rather than continue with the OZ version.

The link below is a comprehensive review of 15 spam fighters that work on various ISP's and Operating systems. Only 2 work with AOL.

http://www.spamfilterreview.com/?engine=kanoodle!881&keyword=spam+stopper

The reviews may be of interest to MG users.

I had previously bought and tried MailWasher Pro (not reviewed here), but could not get it configured to work properly with AOL v7 UK despite many emails to and from MWP and much assistance from them. I bought it on the proviso that it worked. It didn't, they refunded my money, so no complaints there.

So, after all this, I am after a MG user that uses AOL and have found a program effective against spam. If it sends an "invalid address---not found" message back to the spammer so much the better. This was the prime reason I tried MWP.

If you have not had first hand experience with AOL please do not bother to reply as AOL is a special beast (not POP3, as I understand it).

Thanks, AOL users. Baz

I have used Inboxer for over three months as a test for some clients. It is a superb spam filter and learns very quickly. I have set it to check an account that is deliberately made available to advertising and a few friends. In all the time on trial it has never sent a serious email straight to spam but holds them in a review file. Once the message has been allowed it learns immediately/ You can set Inboxer to delete spam automatically or let you review it. The only downside is that it will only work in Outlook not express. It now deletes all the spam/advertising without me reviewing any of it.G

First off, it's it says it's newsletters that you are subscribed to, at the bottom of each email there should be a unsubscribe link. Yes. I know you didn't subscribe to any of these probably, but your email gets signed up one way or another.

A solution:

Use 2+ emails. 1 as your primary email for friends, family, or business. The others for signing up with websites and registrations.

Hope I helped :-)

Does not sound very good to me because even if it knows the email is spam it just moves it to your spam folder.
That means you had to download the spam still.

Better of with MailWasher so you can filter out the email at the server and bounce, delete the spam there so you only download good email so then your have no need of a spam folder because you never download any spam.

My email account is with a local ISP, ie. not one of the majors
like gmail or hotmail. I use Thunderbird on Linux as my email
client. The ISP uses Postini for email security.

I am being flooded by spam emails, which I suspect have the
same source. All are from hotmail addresses, with the sender
name a somewhat garbled combination of letters. The "to" address
does not appear to be my own, but I receive the emails anyway.
Since neither the "from" or "to" addresses are constant, I have
been unable to filter them out in either Postini or in Thunderbird.

I'm more than a novice but less than an expert, and I think I
understand that the sender address can be spoofed, tho I'm unclear
on how my own address can be spoofed such that I receive emails
that do not appear to be addressed to me.

Certainly my basic question is how can this happen and how can
I put a stop to it. Beyond that, what I'd really appreciate is a
pointer to some article, website, etc that would help me understand
the mechanics of this type of spamming, and the methods or options
to filter it out.

Thks, Gus

Enviorment is a small buisess with less than 20 email accounts with an exchange server running Server 2K3 and Exhcnge 2K3. I run Ninja as my exchange spam filter but we got Crushed over the past couple of days. So bad ninja almost choked..(I dont blame ninja, This is not some huge exchange server and getting tagged with 30K+ emails in a couple of hours put a toll on any small server). Our average is almost 1000 emails a day getting caught by our filter but by the end of this week we had gotten over 30K in one day. That number is going down and the situation is now under control however i was looking for a secondary solution that would filter traffic before it even got to my exchange.

Any suggestions on any products that may be out there? Does such a product even exsist?

Since Virgin Media moved me from ntlworld.com to virgin.net, many of my emails have been siphoned off by the spam filter. This means every day I have to access web-mail, and then the spam filter, in order to deal with emails that previously appeared in Outlook Express as expected. What can I do about this?

Answer:virgin.net spam filter

The usual way to deal with this (certainly in Google Mail, for instance) is to add the sender's address of the 'genuine' e-mails to the address book at Virgin's web mail service.

I've been using ThunderBird since the beginning of time and have loved the program. I do have an issue that has popped up that maybe you guys can help me out with. Ok, lets get to the issue.

Just recently I formatted my PC but wanted to keep my old mail. I had read that you can save the Mail folder located at :

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\

This will save all your old mail / Filter Setting / Subfolders / Ect. After you install Thunderbird you can just overwrite the default mail folder and replace it with the Mail Folder you save. Everything works fine and all my mail, Filters & Sub-Folders are just as they were before I formatted the PC.

The Problem:
It seems now everytime I get Spam, it moves it to the Junk folder just as I configured it to but for some reason it marks it as read during the move. Before it would be labeled as Unread after the move to the junk folder. From what I have heard some Spam is intelligent and can send a " I've been open " back to the sender via an HTML Link. I'm not sure if automatically marking it as read will do this. I never open spam, I just hit the Junk Button at the top and send it to my Junk Folder. Any ideas how to switch it back to it not showing as read.
I'm using ThunderBird ver. 1.5.0.2

Thanks guys........

I bought this new spam filter, paid good money for it, and want to test it. Its a new email address and I can't tell if the filter works. Spam me as much as you can, and if I don't get anything I'll know it works. Don't hold back I really want to test this, and if the spam gets through I can just create a new address, so its no problem.

Heres the address, Thnks.

If I define the ?To:? as my email address and use the ?IS NOT? on this To: address, then ask it to move that spam email to the Discard folder then it should work, BUT IT DOES NOT. It moves correctly addressed emails to the Discard folder.Could this be that the ?To:? email address is changed to my name by the sender when its sent. Any suggestions to what spam filter I should look into for Small Business Server 2003 R2 with Exchange Server?

I'm currently using Trendmicro Client/Server Messaging Security 3.0 which is an all-in-one package for spam, spyware, malware, virus, content filtering, and so on. But a couple of our employees are getting spammed to oblivion anyways.

We have about 70 employees, and just two are complaining. Yeah, I know. I told them to gtfo out porn sites. I find it odd just they're getting spammed and noone else is.

Trendmicro Realtime Spam Monitoring is continually showing obvious spams going in and out of the Exchange server, such as taxdonations.com or landmarkhealthcare.com at a pace of about 1 email per 2 seconds. I'm about 5 seconds away from taking his computer away.

Answer:Exchange Anti-Spam Filter

"in and out of the Exchange server"

Are you sure that you have also caught this going outbound? Spam typically is inbound only, so I'd check his machine really closely (or load a fresh OS image on it). If you are seeing it outbound I'd check to see if his box was compromised.

This is probably a thread suited for both this subforum and Webmastering/programming.

We use a custom webapp for online training that has a feedback page built-in, all written in PHP. Whenever an email is made from the site the app uses the user's email address as the From address in the email header and sends it to our organization's email server. However, none of the emails come through. After a few months of back and forth with our Network Management Office, I realize the problem. Since the email is given a From of, say, [email protected], and comes from a private server on a static IP (no domain name), our local email server can't verify the domain to the sender and trashes it as spam. Our techs refuse to white list this, so I've been forced to BCC all the email to my personal account, and manually forward it in.

The server runs Red Hat Linux and sendmail. I'm not very comfortable with sendmail, and don't even know where to start. Basically, I need it to send emails that can legitimately enter our network. I tried setting From: to [email protected]<ip> and that didn't work. The email came through as "Apache <[email protected][hostname].local>".

There are critical emails, and I'm breaking a few regs by having my personal account in the mix, so I'm trying to find a good solution.

Answer:Problems getting emails by a spam filter

Do what you can to get the emails white listed.

I never had any issues with Hotmail's spam filter until somewhere fall last year where they removed the "low" setting and now many of my valid emails end up in the Junk Email box.
I have sent complaints to MS about this but no answer nor solution.

Marking a sender as safe doesn't help. Emails keep ending up in the spam folder.

While searching I couldn't find anything about this, only people complaining the filter is not strict enough. But in my case it is way too strict.

Hope someone has a solution. Would upgrading to paid Hotmail help?

Just curious if anyone has done this or not. I've got a client that was sold a Barracuda Spam Firewall 200 a few years ago. They only have seven email addresses so we moved them to Postini rather than spend a crap ton on maintenance for the Barracuda. So, I'm looking at this thing and thinking this would make a good web filter or something for them. . . . . get some use out of it rather than let it sit there on a shelf for five years before it gets thrown out. . . .

Answer:Anyone try to re-use a Barracuda Spam Filter for something else, like Untangle?

Got the hardware specs?
Untangle wants x86 architecture (can't wait to see down the road as their 64-bit one just hit BETA)

I've seen posts about people getting PFSense installed on WatchGuard appliance hardware.

I am looking for the best exchange 2000 spam filter. This needs to be a server side app. I have been shying away from a lot of the ones i've found on the internet because they are all ranging about $40 per license. I don't want to spend a bundle since we will probably be upgrading our server to 2003 within the next year.

If anyone has any cheap solutions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Best Spam Filter? Exchange 2000

We are using a Barracuda Spam Firewall. It is wonderful. It may be a bit more than you are looking for, but it works great! This way if you swap out your Exchange server, it isn't effected by that. Also if you have to take down your Exchange server for a while, it acts as a backup mail server and will hold everything till the Exchange server is back up and running.

I highly recommend them. LDAP lookups mean that your Exchange server isn't spending time dealing with messages that don't go to anyone, so it drops the load on the Exchange server. It clears out Viruses, spam, phishing attacks.

I'm thinking of upgrading to Outlook 2003 (currently using Outlook 2000 under XP). The only reason for this upgrade would be that I've read that Microsoft has built in a fairly good spam filter.

However, someone just told me that the Outlook 2003 spam filter only works if you're using Outlook in conjunction with an Exchange email server. Our email is through our webhosting company (Verio) and therefore is POP type email.

Will the spam filter work with POP email? If so, how well does it work?

Thanks!

Answer:Outlook 2003 Spam Filter

Not true. You do not need an Exchange sever for Outlook2003 to use it's built in spam filter.

Personally I use SpamBayes. It's free, very simple to use, and it pretty much catches all my spam. Much prefer the programs that integrate with Outlook since it it a lot easier to use.

Does anyone know a good spam filter for Outlook? I downloaded a couple of them, but they cost $39. It seems like a lot to pay for a plug in to an existing application. But the free stuff I have looked at was lame.

I would like to have the ability to bounce a message as undeliverable, to appear to the spam sender as if my email is not valid. Also, it is nice to be able to flag which messages are spam and which are not, so the filter can learn what my valid messages look like.

Anyone have a cheap or free favorite?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Is There A Spam Filter For Outlook Express?

He needs to use the web interface and notify the provider of the spam messages so they can upgrade their filters to stop it.

Other than that he needs to mark each message as Junk (Right Click on message) and it should send it to his Junk Mail Folder. At which point he will just have to empty that folder.

We use GFI spam filtering, and a large quantity of spam is still getting through.

For a given word that has been flagged in GFI, some emails containing it are being blocked whereas others are getting through. There does not appear to be a consistent pattern. As a result of this, someof our users are getting large quantities of spam.

I have never used GFI before, and have been thrown in at the deep end, so I would be grateful if anyone had any thoughts or had experienced this themselves?

Hi All,
My spam seems to be increasing and I am considering using a spam filter program. There are a few on the market.
Spamilator, Mailwasher etc
Do they work? If so, any recommendations please?
Thanks!

Answer:Anyone use a spam filter program? Do they work?

I actually use gMail to process my spam.

A free gmail account has the ability to check and collect emails from a number of other POP3 based email servers and then organise and present them for reading, Gmail works with POP3 or IMAP (recommended for anyone who wishes to check from more than one device, and has Broadband Internet access).

Gmail's default spam filters are IMO at least as good as the specialist programs on sale and it also allows you simply add to the filters for your specific needs, (just click the mark as spam button, for anything that does not end up in the spam bin that you feel is spam).

Spam is automatically deleted from the spam bin after thirty days but I tend to check every few days just in-case anything has been incorrectly classed as spam (extremely rare in my experience)

You can also create rules to control anything that, although is not specifically spam, you wish to clear from your inbox but save to read later, (I use it to save away my regular informational emails that I have subscribed to

I need your help to tackle a corrupt Council and the Microsoft Spam filter is the key to this.

This happened after I started contacting departments to object to a council application. I only found out because an employee told me they had stopped receiving Emails from that address.
