Preferred Solution: Can I open documents created on Open Office on a linux based system using a windows based Open Office?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Whenever I click on an Office or Open Office attachment in Windows 10 mail I get two options, Open or Download. No matter which option I choose it takes me to my document folder to save. I am unable to view the file. I can go to the same attachment in outlook.com or windows live mail and open it no problem which is a nuisance because I like the convenience of using the new mail app. I have removed the app and reinstalled it but still have the same problem.

I'm running Windows 7 on my new computer, which came with a trial version of Office 2010. Rather than buy the full version when the trial expired, I installed the Office 2003 I had on my old -- now dead -- computer. I now find that I can't open the Word and Excel files I created with the 2010 version. Is there a 'cloud' site where I could send the 2010 files and have them returned to me as standard .xls and .doc files? Or is there a free converter available for download?

I am looking for a software similar to acronis, where I just boot with a CD, and have access to the network to store the image. I'd also like the capability of browsing the image within Linux by mounting it. Is there such software? I did a search on Google but it does not seem there are many Linux based imaging solutions.

Answer:open source/free linux based disk imaging?

Have you looked at Partimage or Clonezilla. I don't know if they have network support though.

I've used partimage with PING to backup images to CD's. Unfortunately it's only partition based and not a true disk bit copy. I don't know of any freeware that does disk bit copies.

Whenever I try to open any of my Microsoft Office documents (excel or word), the Windows Installer box pops up and I get the "preparing to install" and "please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003" messages. The document semms like it's opening but it only shows a blank page with a gray background. I'm running Windows XP and as was mentioned, Windows Office Professional Edition 2003.

Hello Everyone! Sorry. Instead of a question, I just have this solution that I want to share. I noticed nobody here asking for it. But, just in case, here it is.

QUESTION: When we open multiple Microsoft Office documents from Windows Explorer, they don't seem to open alphabetically. How do we do it?

ANSWER (Old MS Office Versions):

In your Explorer window, supposing you have five (5) files named A, B, C, D, E. The sequence goes like this:
1. Single-Click file B. This acts as the anchor point for most of the selection.
2. Shift-Click the last file. In this case, E. By this time, B to E is now selected. Only A is unselected.
3. To include A, Control-Click file A to complete the selection.
4. Press the Enter button.

ANSWER (Newer MS Office Versions; per app; Excel example):

1. Create a shortcut from the MS Excel application. Put it somewhere easily accessible such as the Desktop.
2. In Explorer, ready your files because you'll be dragging them to the MS Excel shortcut.
3. Select the files you want to open simultaneously and alphabetically. It doesn't matter how you select them.
4. This is the curious part. When you drag and drop the selected files to the MS Excel shortcut, it matters which file among the group your cursor is pointing at. That file will be the first to be opened. The rest will be opened alphabetically after the one you're pointing at.
5. Example: You have files A, B, C, D, E. We select them all and drag-drop them to the MS Excel shortcut.... Read more

As the title suggests...I created a password for the presentation I just completed and misunderstood its function. I thought I was creating a password to protect it from being edited by the people I need to send it to. In turn, I need to disable this password...it makes no sense to send someone a protected document and the password they need to open it. Can anyone here offer advice? I have not been able to identify a means to disable this "open document" password.

Additionally, can anyone help me determine how I can protect the document from being edited by the people I send it to?

I've experienced this problem twice in the past week. Here is my current problem:

New Windows 8 computer
Moved Office 2010 install from old computer to new computer
Copied all documents to new computer by installing the old drive in the new computer (NTFS to NTFS)

When trying to open any DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, or PPTX files that are stored in the Documents folder I get permission errors. Word will open an RTF file just fine. If I try to use any Office programs to save a file to the Documents folder, I also get permission errors. I can move the file to the Desktop and work with it just fine. I can then move it back to the Documents folder.

Here are the errors when trying to open files:
Word - Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges
Excel - 'C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Book1.xlsx' could not be found
Powerpoint - The path or file name for C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\Presentation1.pptx is invalid.

When I try to use one of these programs to save to the Documents folder, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to save in this location.

I tried copying the files two different ways to eliminate any lingering NTFS permissions. I used a linux box to copy from the old drive to EXT4, then to a linux formatted FAT drive. I plugged this FAT drive into the Windows machine and moved the files over but got the same errors. Next, I copied the files from the old drive to a FAT32 drive using another Windows box. Then I tool the FA... Read more

I am running windows xp/works and have a file created in open office(sxc) and cannot open it, any suggestions please, tried opening it in word and also notepad but no luck.thankssteve

Answer:how to open open office file in windows

sxc is the spreadsheet format in OO. So try opening it in Excel, this would be your safest bet for opening the file if Office supports the format at all.If it can't then you could install OO to open it, OO is free after all.Or use an online document viewer such as ZOHO. It supports sxc files.

Suddenly I am unable, when in Word or Excel (components of Office 2003 SBE) to navigate to any documents unless they are in the main My Documents folder, ie if they are in a sub-folder within My Documents I cannot get at them. When I try, Word (or Excel) goes into Not Responding mode. However I can get at them by navigating around My Documents using Windowa Explorer, and then open them by double-clicking. I can then edit and save an edited version (though if I try Save As I get the Not Reponding problem again.I have tried removing (via Add/Remove Programs) and reinstalling Office 2003. I have also used System Restore to go back to a time I didn't have this problem. Neither of these helped. Detect an dRepair from within Word didn't help either.Any ideas?

All of a sudden, I cannot open ANY Microsoft Office documents that I have saved on my computer. Even if I create a new document, save it, and close it, I am not able to open it a minute later. A dialog box comes up that says, "Publisher (or Word, etc) cannot find the file you specified. The next dialog box will let you browse to locate the file on your hard drive or floppy disk." I tried repairing and re-installing Office, but that didn't work. I have had these files saved on my desktop for months and haven't had any problems opening them until now. Also, I was reading about error codes with this subject. I'm not sure if it helps, but the dialog box has the error code 1100174. Thanks in advance for any help with this!

Hi, I'm running Windows XP and have Office 2000 installed. I use Internet Explorer 7. If I open IE 7 to browse the web and then try to open an Office document the Office program doesn't do anything, then eventually tells me it's "not responding." I have to reboot to get the documents to open. After reboot, as long as I don't open the internet, all Office documents open fine. Once I open the internet, I have to reboot before opening any Office documents. I've tried "repairing" Office 2000. No help. Any sugestions? Thanks!

Yeah, I use Mozilla Firefox, I just don't use IE any more, once every eon (long time ). It's really to download just go to http://www.mozilla.org, I hope that helps!
Sorry I just don't use IE because of all the problems I had with it and this was at least 5 years ago. I keep it around because anything that is Microsoft word, excel, etc... programs doesn't allow Firefox to download from their website.

Hello,

When I try to open a 2007 Word or Excel document I recieve as an attachment in Outlook 2003, I get the following message:
"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". Office 2007 compatibility pack was installed and it still did not work.

I then uninstalled Office 2003, uninstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack and then I ran CCleaner to clean up the registry. I updated my OS (currently has Windows XP SP3) with all updates, reinstalled Office 2003, installed Office 2003 SP 3 and then reinstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack.

I still get the same message when I try to open an Office 2007 attachment in Outlook 2003.

OS is Windows XP SP3 fully updated
Office 2003 SP 3 fully updated

Any suggestions?

Well you'd uninstall it. I don't think the process is any different than uninstalling other software but you can take a look at this:http://www.wikihow.com/Uninstall-Op...(Don't click on any of the links there.) Then you can attempt a reinstall. Make sure the version you're installing is compatible with windows 8.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, running Office XP, and I use Microsoft Office Professional 2002. (I bought this computer in 2002)

I have been having a problem for several weeks, ever since I had a number of viruses and other bad things going on with my computer which have since been resolved.

I can't open documents that I had previously created with Microsoft Office. (Word and Excel) When I try to do so, I get a message at the bottom of the screen that says "requesting virus scan" and a timer comes up, but then nothing happens.

I have tried a number of things, including uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Office Professional, going to the Help Menu (Detect and Repair) when I open Excel or Word, and nothing works. I was having trouble even opening Word...it would only open in Safe mode every other time I tried to open it, until I read another helpful hint in this forum today about renaming normal.dot. I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with this problem as I am pulling my hair out.

I had someone come to help me clean out my computer when I was having all my problems several weeks ago, and he was not able to figure this one out, either.

I had Microsoft Word (don't remember the year) on my computer, then I downloaded the new Microsoft Word 2007 trial. After it ran out, I could never get my old Microsoft word installed again even though I have the discs. So I resorted to using Open Office. I need to save my documents in either .doc or .rtf for my classes. No matter how many different ways I try to save my documents, my tabs and numbering will always come out messed up. I am getting so frustrated. I have Microsoft Works on here, and tried using that instead, but the same thing keeps happening. I must be doing something wrong. Why doesn't my work save the way I set it up and the format keeps changing. I don't think I can save my work in the open office file format. What is going on?

Thumbnails for Open Office Documents. Now the Thumbnail is OK.After the file is converted back to the ODT format the thumbnail view still shows the embedded image. But if I have to change the image, Open Office no longer gives the thumbnail with the image. Hi,

Every time I try to open any of my Word or Excel files, my coomputer tries to install MS Office 2003 & it asks me for the product Key Number. I don't have MS Office 2003 & so I don't have a key number. I have MS Office 2000. So I can't open any of my documents.. This has been happening ever since I downloaded MS's Windows Desktop Search. Not sure if it is a Windows Installer problem or not. You may need to run the Windows Installer Cleanup utility.

Answer:How to convert documents fron Microsoft to Open Office

This really should be posted in the Software forum, as it doesn't really have anything to do with programming.

Having said that, I believe Open Office can open Microsoft files directly. No conversion required. Just open them and save them in the open document format.

I got my computer with a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office 2010 installed on it. Once the trial ran out, I bought the product, but in doing so installed a separate application, leaving two Microsoft Office installations, one with an unregistered product key and one registered (yes, I know I was stupid). I uninstalled the old version, leaving no default program to open documents with. I tried to track down the EXEs for each program, no dice. When I looked at the start menu shortcuts, I found that each Microsoft Office program lead to one application, called CVH.exe. Setting that as the default program didn't work. How can I make it so that I can double-click on a pptx or docx file and run the corresponding application?

Answer:Default program to open microsoft office documents

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. First, you did nothing stupid. The program should have resolved that issue for you. You may want to complain nto MS about this. Did you receive a DVD or was it a download? If the new Office you got is on DVD, install it again after removing both of the other installs. When you um-install Office it does not destroy user documents.Look in the list of entries in the  'Program Files' directory and see if there is two installations of MS Office. If you ind the right one, send it to the desktop as a shortcut. (Right Click) That will put a good shortcut on the desktop. Also, go into the place where you  can remove programs. See if two versions of MS Office are installed. Remove the bad one.

Hello everyone, thanks for viewing.

So I logged onto my laptop to work on my university assignment some more, and poof, it won't open.
I keep getting the same error every time.

I can open the file in WordPad but I just get fifteen pages of ">:?:%<":?&:"
I can open it in OpenOffice but the formatting all changes, headers/footers disappear, images disappear, text boxes containing quotes aren't there.

I copied the Open Office version into a new blank Word page; and filled in the blanks (which took me an hour) but when I saved and opened the file; I got the same error.

Hoping it was me doing something wrong with the way I saved it or the default program to open it, I repeated the process taking up another hour; but I'd done it right, and got the same error code.

The default program to open it is Office 2003, the same format I made/saved the replacement file in.
It makes no sense to me. Also, why now? What changed? It was working fine yesterday.
Not done any downloads or scans so I don't know what the changed factor is.

Please can anyone help me, these assignments are dawning upon me and I need to get my finishing touches done before I can submit them, I also don't want to risk submitting a faulty file.

Thank you so much!

The trial period was over for the MS Office 2007 trial that came preloaded on my new computer, so I bought and activated the MS Office Home and Student 2010 product key. Afterwards, I had been able to open and edit Word, Powerpoint, etc documents.

I recently uninstalled the MS Office 2007 trial that was on my new computer to try to get rid of "junk" that was taking up space. Now, I can't open open any of the existing documents I have saved on my desktop or anywhere else. The only way I can even save and open a document is to open the (for example) Word 2010 app, make a new document and save it to desktop, and then open the Word 2010 app, File, Open and open it from there.

The message I get when I try to open a document is "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Defaults Programs control panel."

I tried to do that and change .doc file type so that the current default of "Unknown application" would chan... Read more

Answer:Solved: Can't Open MS Office (Word, Powerpoint, etc) Documents

Things got messed up as you uninstalled the trial version after installing the Home and Student version.
You may need to remove the H and S version and reinstall it.

Hi,
I can not open ms Word documents by double-clicking on them anymore, When ever I do so I get a mesage saying: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
I do get the Word window open but there is nothing in it. I have tried this with .doc, .docx and .txt files and I get the same thing.
But I can open files if I first open word and then go to Open and select a document from there, but not by double clicking.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and Microsoft Office Word 2007, can anyone help me?

Answer:Can not open documents in Microsoft Office Word 2007

Open Word, go to the Office Orb, then Resources, and then "Run Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

This will check out the install and do a repair if needed. You will need to the "Office cache" file on the hard drive or have the Office CD handy, if it is needed.

Hi folks,I've got one of the original asus eee 701 units and it's fine as a back up unit. However in recent days I turned off the device without exiting Open Office and now every time I run Open Office on it I get a box come up telling me it's recovering the lost document (I don't care about the doc in question - but I'm not given a choice in the matter). There's no option to cancel the recovery and even when the doc is fully recovered there's no way to proceed. I can neither run the recovered doc, nor simply cancel it and get into open office that way.Is there a simple solution to this or am I going to have to do a complete reset (and is that going to fix it?)I have already tried the F9 on boot up - but nothing happened.

Answer:Asus eee (original Linux) Open Office problem

If you open the file manager and in View make sure that there is a tick in show hidden files, then look in your home folder for a file called .ooo-2 rename it to .ooo-2_old then open OpenOffice again, it will create a new .ooo-2 file, note the fullstop before the file name, that indicates the file is normally hidden. If it all works then you can delete the .ooo-2_old file.

UC Berkeley student and I'm supposed to be writing my thesis which is due soon (tomorrow actually), but am instead entirely inconvenienced by all the computer virus issues I'm running into. I need a solution SOON. I downloaded Avast while in Safe Mode and then had it run prior to restarting my laptop in regular mode and that seemed to solve the bulk of my issues. I've tried everything, including various scanners like Avast, Win Patrol, SpyDoc, ComboFixer, GoRedFix, and more but many don't catch whatever it is and others that do detect it just can't seem to get rid of it...I had a huge mess of problems and I think they are solved except for these: 1-Google searches are redirected, unless I "ctrl" click cashe several times at once. In that case usually one of the pages will be a proper page instead of a scam search site or a random junk site.2-OpenOffice docs aren't opening. (They did right after I first ran Avast, but not any more.)3-This virus somehow crept over to my boyfriend's computer. He hadn't downloaded any programs all month, but yesterday his Google searches began being redirected too and his computer exhibits everything I mentioned in problem 1 but not 2. All of this started for me a weeks and 2 days ago. My professor said I needed to submit my thesis in Word 2003 which I don't have and haven't needed throughout all of my time at UC Berkeley, and really won't really need again after I graduate. A classmate showed me that he got his MS Word from iso... Read more

Good morning,

I just did a Clean install of my Windows 10 Home last night after it developed several corrupt files that I couldn't repair. I previously had Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus on my computer but I somehow think that could have something to do with my corrupted files (not letting me utilize Windows Update successfully).

My question: Does the free 'Open Office' program have a program I could utilize to open Power Point Presentations that I had saved on an External Hard Drive? If so, it would keep me from installing Office 2013 again.

When I had Office installed I only used it for the Word Program and to open Power Point programs.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

Hello,

I am running Office 2003 on Windows 7. My PC is only 6 months old and everything has been running like butter. All of a sudden Office files open slowly when double-clicked from their respective locations (they would normally blink up). If I open Word or Excel and then open the files from there, they open quick. Outlook on the other hand, is just slow to load up...which it wasn't before.

I did a ton of research online and couldn't get a clear fix. My thoughts are:
Anti Virus? (I'm using AVG Free)
Ad-Aware Free? (Ad-Watch live is on...however it was on before)
Windows update or office update?

But obviously I'm here to get your thoughts. It's a pain in the ass when I bought a new PC so it could perform quick, and now spreadsheets and email take 20 seconds or more to open.

Answer:Office files open slowly (Office 2003 / Windows 7)

I just wanted to add that when I disconnect the PC from the internet, the problem seems to go away?

I have a new computer running Windows 7 Home Premium and Office Pro 2010. Whenever I click on a hyperlink in an open Word or Excel document (or any Office document, I think) that links to a password-protected website, the log-in dialogue from Internet Explorer opens up, even though my default browser (FireFox) is already open, and I am already logged in to the password-protected site. This only happens with links to password-protected pages - others open normally in FireFox.

I have been through my default program settings and file association settings, and manually changed everything I recognize as internet-related to open in FireFox, but it's still happening. The site I can't open is a private WordPress site, so the log-in page is a php file. I tried creating a .php file association, but that didn't solve the problem. The password protection is via an htaccess file, but I don't know enough about that to speculate whether that's relevant (everything starting with http is supposed to be opening in FireFox, according to my settings).

I am in and out of that website all the time, so this is really irritating. I don't want two browsers open, and I don't want to use Internet Explorer, but I can't uninstall it, as I do need to use it to check websites I'm building from time to time. I'd be very grateful for any solutions anyone has to offer.

Thank you!

Two days ago I uninstalled an office publisher trial that was past it's trial period.
Now when I go to open a doc I am asked to insert Office xp proffessional CD but I only have office home edition installed at the factory.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Answer:Cannot open documents after uninstalling Office publisher trial version

It was a trial version? so you could not use it unlimited?.
Furthermore if you want to use this application then you will have to buy this software.

However, you said that you are a owner of office home edition. So why you don?t install this software and use it instead of Office xp professional.

I'm having a problem opening a text file in Documents that I wrote using Open Office.

It's extension is .wps. I get a message it opens with swriter.exe.

When I try to open the text file, I get a long list of titles, such as: Open Office.org 1.0 Text Document, PSD - Adobe Photshop, etc., but I don't get the text file I wrote.

I recently did Disk Cleanup and Error Checking, so I might have removed a program I needed to click open and read my Open Office text files.

Advice would be appreciated.

A window appears (which I cannot close) asking me if I want to "restore windows" or "don't restore windows". No matter which one I click on, nothing happens. Neither will this window go away, nor can I open any documents saved in Open Office. Help !Prior to this happening, I would be typing a document in Open Office, and all of a sudden a message would tell me that the entire file got deleted. Sometimes I could click on a certain button to "restore file" and that would happen; sometimes it wouldn't restore, and I lost the whole document. I started to "Save" each sentence I typed!!All this happened for about 2 months until suddenly I can no longer open any saved documents and this strange window appears, as described in my first paragraph.

Answer:I cannot open my saved Open Office files.

This sounds more like a virus than a hardware/ software issue. Are you running antivirus software? If yes and it is up to date I would recommend also running a malware program like Malwarebytes once in a while. That being said I would also try running explorer and find an office file you have had trouble with. Right click on the file and (depending on your operating system) select "Choose program" and select "Always use this program for this file type" and choose the appropriate program you want to open this file type. The operating system uses file extensions (the 3 or 4 letters following the file name and period) to determine which programs to open files with and this association is often changed when you load new software or when you get hit with a virus or malware. Hope this helps, good luck.

I have started to use Open Office 3.2 for all text documents, usually saving as a .doc file. This morning I have managed to complete a text document however, somehow I have closed the work off without a file extension (neither.doc or .odt).I have been able to recreate the file by opening it with WordPad then saving it properly this time. However,I am now left with the original file with which I seem unable to anything with. I have tried to delete it, but the system informs me that it is still open. I have tried to access the file as an 'Open document' but without the file extension all I get is a prompt to 'Open with' query (hence the WordPad). I have tried to rename it, again being informed that the file is 'open'.Are there any suggestions that might help me?In a nut shell, I want to delete this file...Many thanks in advance

I don't use text documents that often but did download Open Office and I like it. But I shouldn't need both OOo and Windows, should I? I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and it came with Windows Office Powerpoint Viewer 2007. Can I just uninstall that program?

I LIKE being able to uninstall Windows stuff because--as I understand--they tend to take up a lot of space. But OOo is 374 MB and Windows is only 133 MB. The "Viewer" looks like it may be an introductory abridged version of the real thing and I suspect I don't need it. I think it's what it is--only a viewer--as I see nowhere I can compose a doc.

Can I dump it?

Thanks, as always for your generous help.

Answer:Can Open Office let me remove Windows Office?

Powerpoint Viewer is independent of MS Office. It was designed for people, who don't have Office, but wanted to open Power Point presentations.
It's up to you. You can keep it just for that purpose, or use OO to open pps files.

I downloaded windows 10. Couldn't find documents, pics, etc. Finally found, at least some, in c/users/my name. But when I go to open them, they open for .5 second, then they're gone again. They will not stay open. What's going on???? I'd rather just go back to windows 7 but it has been slightly over 30 days and, frankly, I'm afraid of losing all my files!!! What can I do?? I also read that Windows 10 is going through more changes and it could be possible that anyone on Windows 10 could lose their files as new changes are being made!! HELP!! I updated to Windows 10 on Sept 22.

I understand that if a user installs Open Office on a machine with conventional Office 97-2003 that Open Office will use its own suite of products for each application. (Unless the user ops to use Office to open the applications by unchecking the corresponding application boxes during Open Office's installation.) But if a user chooses Open Office as the default for applications on a system that also has Office 2007 on it, how does Open Office deal with this if the OO applications remain checked as the default?

Does the current version of OO even understand how to DEAL with the new Office 2007? I understand that OO can not read docx documents, which is the default for Word 2007, (although this can be easily changed back to doc.) I found out that Open Office 3.0, scheduled for release this fall, will be able to read docx documents. What's so great about docx docs anyway?

Using my example, assume this situation on a new Windows Vista machine. (fresh installs of each program or Office 2007 OEM (factory installed.) What behavior would be expected here?

Ok, so i want everyones impressions on the various Office Suites.

I personally if i had hte money would go for the Microsoft Office Pro series. I for one, think MS Word is one of the most refined word processing applications avalible. And coming a very close second is Open Office. I find my self having many problems trying to do somthing in Word, or Word crashing, so i switch over to my trusty free Open Office.

As for Corel and WordPerfect, my experiance is that it is way over priced, and is basically on the level of "word pad".

I am attempting to have the company i work for tranition from MS Office to Open Office, but just for a control i thought i might throw in Corel.

So what are your guy's and gal's thoughts on the various office apps?

Answer:MS Office vs. Open Office vs. Corel WordPerfect Office

Openoffice is an extemely close second to MS-office and that is for one thing

Calc's graphing wizzard: It is horrendous. As an engineer I need to admend graphas add new plots... and it is soo hard with openoffice

There is suppose to be a more MS-wizzard with OO-2.1 so until then Openofffice is 2nd
When the new wizzard is shipped it takes first place very quickly and by a signifcant margin

Hello, I just got an X100e and use it almost exclusively for work related tasks in creating online training manuals, Power Points, etc. Although the X100e is an efficient notebook for Excel, Word and emails, it doesn't do very well with graphics. My job requires me to work extensively with images both from email attachments and those that I grab from the web. The machine is veeeery slow in opening these files and more than very slow when viewing web based videos. The jerky "starting and stopping" casued by slow buffering makes them unwatchable and the slow load times of images slows my work pace to a crawl. Question...is it the 1.6Hz speed, or the single core proccessor that is the reason for this. I will need to upgrade to a better equiped lap top so should I look for faster speed or a dual core? Thanks much...5.13.11

Answer:open jpgs and web based images and videos

doing multi task works alot better on multi core CPUs & a faster CPU speed would also help. a better GPU would help with the videos. I would also look to Win. 7 64 bit so you can use more than 3 GB of memory

Just bought a new laptop with Windows7 64bit installed-my first exposure to Windows7. I had Office 2007 installed on my old Dell 32 bit machine. I had also recently pruchased Office 2010 and installed that on my new machine.

Now, when I try to open those 32bit 2007 files with 64bt 2011, Iget an error message that "no picture file is available", or words to that effect. When I try to "open with", the only option displayed is "Microsoft Office" with an icon that looks like a picture file. When I try to browse to the proper office program(Excel, for example), there are none of teh Office suite programs displayed, only "Microsoft Office".

I can navigate seperately to the proper progran, Excel, etc., and drag the file into the application, and it opens, and all seems to work OK. I "save as" the proper application file, but it still will not open with double-click on the file name.

I have not seen this particular item in the forums and would appreciate very much some help in fixing this issue.

Thanks,

Grubby

Hi,

I have a 2003 SBS machine and have various clients connected through exchange to get mail. Users typically leave outlook running the whole day while they work on programs such as access/excel.

I have noticed that on some machines excel and word docs open very quickly over the network until outlook is left open and connected to exchanged. we are opening the files on a variety of win 2003 servers, however when they have their outlook exchange account connected I have seen the docs take anywhere from 3-5x the normal amount of time to open.

I have also noticed that opening email attachments such as xls and doc are also very slow while connected to exchange, but it seems to vary from file to file, some seem better than others.

does the connection to exchange complicate the process of opening docs on remote machines or does it sound like I have a misconfiguration somewhere? I would like to get the performance of opening a file (say a xls) on a network share to be the same as it is when outlook is not connected to exchange.

I do not have these PCs running in offline or cached mode as we have a shared calendar that does not display correctly when I enabled these features. Clients are running office 2003,2007,2010. Turning on cached mode does not seem to make much if any of a difference btw.

Thanks for any insight you may have

have been using open office for several months and really like it but for some reason it will not open now. When i click on the desktop icon it will start to open then the screen just goes blank. I have tried it in all applications (spreadsheet, write, etc.) with same results. I have at times gotten a drop down with a list of filters. I am not the worlds most knowledgeable person on computers and software so i have no idea what this filter thing is. i have tried to select a filter from the drop down but nothing happens. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall but with no success. I desperately need my "write" program so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 60 day trial version of Office 2007 Home & Student on my laptop and would like to try the free Open Office before deciding to pay microsoft to keep Office 2007. Can anyone please tell me if I can have both programmes running on my computer at the same time please?

Answer:Trial Home & Student Office 2007 and Open Office

Of course you can, neither program will interfere with the other.Be careful about file association options when installing Open Office though, as OO may well take over the MS Office file types...

I have long used Open Office, but recently I read in PC Advisor that Libre Office (derived from it)was better. However printing an envelope in Libre Office seems almost impossible. When the print order is given, the small text window to the left shows the wrong size, and when printing a DL envelope it clearly shows and gives the size of a B5 envelope. I did not make a mistake in selecting the correct size. Can anyone help and is this a problem with Libre Office?
Glen

Answer:Word Processing problem, Open Office and Libre Office

Glen
I have Libre Office version 3.6.3.2 and just tried to print a DL envelope and had no problems.
When I prepared the envelope, I went into Format/Page and selected DL Envelope. then Landscape. This set the paper size. I then typed the envelope with a return address on the top right side and the recipient address amid-ships. Put the envelope in the printer, long ways in and bingo.
As a matter of interest do you have to change the paper size in the printer properties? I didn't on mine. I also have to say that I am using a MAC, but the principles should be the same on a Windows machine.

Hello. My trial versions of office 2003 expired. I installed OpenOffice.org and it has more than enough functionality. I relaced Outlook with Mozilla Thunderbird. The only functionality I need is a calendar. Does anyone know of a good calendar application? Anything that integrates with Thunderbird? Many thanks!

Answer:MS Office replaced with Open Office & Mozilla. What application for a calendar?

You can try the Mozilla Calendar plugin although I still find it a little buggy. Using another plugin, you can have a button on the Thunderbird toolbar to bring up the calendar program. It does it's purpose decently though, but I had a difficult time with importing data from Outlook 2003.

Hi,

I have a client that has Office 365. They have two people with this issue. It's not really a huge problem but more as an annoyance. Whenever they go to open a document through an Office product (Word/Excel: File>Open>Computer>Browse) the documents appear but they're missing the icons next to their name. There's barely any information on it when Googling this and they all seem to lead to dead ends for us. The two I have found are http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/172/t/194050.aspx and http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/d4b70639-eda4-49b4-b5e5-e0ffd87b16c5/word-and-excel-file-and-folder-icons-missing-in-file-open-dialog-box?forum=officeitpro neither have resolved our issue. I have ran a repair on Office, re-installed office, recreated Windows icons, and opened the programs in Safe Mode to no avail. No Add-Ins are causing the issue. You can see the icons to the left of the files in Internet Explorer when going to Documents. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Answer:Office 365 Icons not being displayed when in office program>open>browse

I am just throwing out an idea and it probably will not work but what happens when you change to Large Icon view? Do you see the icons?

Hey All,

Here is my issue. The Company we consult for has not transitioned all of the way to Office 2007. We have a number of machines that still have Office 2003. Compatibility Pack works on almost all issues.

Current issue is one of our users received a PowerPoint 2003 that has embedded PowerPoint 2007 files. When the user opens the PowerPoint 2007 file Office 2003 shuts down. He has to download the 2007 file to his desktop.

From what I can see this is because the file conversion process shuts down Office 2003 before attempting to open the PowerPoint 2007 file.

Another issue that may be complicating the error is we had to run a Fixit patch from Microsoft that was causing Excel, Word and PowerPoint to be scanned which caused long opening times. I don't remember the KB article for that one at the moment but will find it if I need to.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I have an Excel file which has some moving objects as well as some drop down menus. I recently installed MS Office 2007 after erasing 2003. The Excel tables now are disabled, the file now looks like a picture, only the fields outside of the content are really clickable.I have tried to enable all macros, downloaded the MS compatibility pack, still same issue. Any suggestions/ideas? The file works in 2013 and 2016.I can share the file upon request ...

Answer:Office 2003 Excel file will not open with Office 2007

Thank you for your suggestions, here an update: I got the file working - how, no idea. I re-opened the original attachment, deleted the one I had on my PC and voila, it works.

On my Win7 PC I have open office and on my WinXP Laptop I have Office 2007. Both have one major problem: the spell-checker does not work regularly for English and does not work at all for other languages, e.g., French, Spanish, or German.

I did read other threads regarding this problem and I did go through the routine of Tools-option-writing aids; and marked "check spelling as you type." I also have my abc on the menu bar checked and the adjacent ABC is underlined with a red wavy line (which means the spell-checker is active).

The problem is that when I activate the Eng language in my task bar and type a wrong word, it will be marked with a wavy red line-- which means my spell checker works for English. Now while I still have English on my language bar, if I type a word in Spanish, the spell-checker doesn't work because the foreign word is not marked with red-wavy line. If I change the language in my task bar to Spanish and write a wrong Spanish word, again the spellchecker doesn't seem to work.

Anybody has any idea what seems to be the problem?

I greatly appreciate your help.

All of these three apps (Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, and Open Office) freeze immediately after opening any file such as .docx, .doc, etc through them.
The problems with all the three apps started at the same time. I have reinstalled the apps several times, but that didn't solve anything.
There is no antivirus except Windows 10' Defender.
Please help. I am going crazy here.
I've Windows 10 home edition. It is updated.

Answer:Microsoft Office, Open Office, LibreOffice - all three apps freezing!!

Does the same happen if you try this in Safe Mode?

Have you changed your page file settings from default?

Do you have a system restore point or disk images (which we strongly and repeatedly recommend using) you can use to return to a point before this problem started?

I installed office 2007 (full install after uninstall of office 2003) on vista yesterday and every time I open an office product, it gives me a message ?please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office professional 2007?. Then it pops a window with a status bar for ?Configuration Progress?.

I looked this up online and it said that this was caused by installing as a user, not an administrator. So I uninstalled office entirely, booted, and reinstalled as administrator.

Still doing the same thing. Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:office 2007 configuring every time I open an office app on vista

Hey
that behaviour it's from all office versions till now, i didn't see that in 2007, create a new user and see if it does the same, generally office firt starts do that to configure the profile, if it works just backup our profile and make a new one for you

Unable to open Microsoft Office documents(excel, word) in Internet Explorer when we enforce strict TLS 1.2 protocol (Disabling SSL v2,SSL v3,TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1)on the webserver. We tested by removing strict TLS 1.2 and IE is able to open the document fine.
Error description : We see a Microsoft Excel Security Warning with the following content.
Certificate error
The application experienced an internal error loading the SSL libraries.

When we disabled SSL V2 and SSL V3, the document opens fine but when TLS 1.0 is disabled we are seeing the  pop-up with certificate error. We tried to open the reports in CSV format, 2007 format and 2003 format and all of them have the same issue. Does
Internet Explorer have any restrictions when TLS 1.2 is strictly enabled ?

Note : We are able to download the document using Internet explorer and the document opens fine from local but opening the document from the browser fails with certificate error.

I have used Open Office for years with no problems. It's easy to save as a Word document. I bought a new new computer wrote several items, saved in OO. This computer doesn't have Word installed so I installed Office Start (not knowing the difference). Now every OO document on my desktop is taken over by Word - literally with a big W. I can't open it unless I agree to a long list of rules, including personalized ads, which I don't want.

I'm not very computer savvy and don't know if I should uninstall Office Starter.

Please advise.

Hello please help me. well I have office 2007 and office 2003 on my PC. So my friwnd gave me a ppt file that is in office 2010 and unfortunatly i dont have office 2010. if there are any converters to convert this file in offive 2007??? or if there is other way to open this 2010 file?

Answer:Open office 2010 PPT files with Office 2007

2010 doesn't have different file extensions from 2007. docx, xlsx, pptx, accdb. You should be able to open those files in 2007 without issue. Also, it's not really the best idea to have two different versions of Office installed. They can conflict, especially when it comes to macros and equations.

Anyone migrated their business from Microsoft Office to Open Office?

Thinking about doing it as a way to cut back on costs. Currently we are using variety of office versions right now (2007, 2003, & 2000) It would cost a small fortune to get everyone on the same version.

Just looking for some feedback, share your thoughts and experiences. Thanks.

Answer:Anyone migrated their business from Microsoft Office to Open Office?

I don't run any company or enterprise, but it's been several years I'm happily using open office, it's 3 times smaller than MS and to me much easier to use. I think the functions and features and interface are pretty well organized. And for that all, it's freeware.
