truecrypt hidden volume with existing encrypted volume

Question: truecrypt hidden volume with existing encrypted volume

I have a truecrypt encrypted volume which is my entire hard drive.  This contains the windows OS and my files(one of many backed up encrypted copies).  I would now like to implement a 2nd truecrypt volume inside this present truecrypt volume.  Truecrypt calls this a hidden volume.  The idea is that at boot-up, you can use one of two passwords.  The one you choose dictates which (the primary or the hidden) volume.  The easy way to do this is to do it when first creating both truecrypt volumes but I did not realize I wanted to create this hidden volume until now.  All of the instructions I have seen require you to dismount the encrypted volume which will host the hidden volume first.  However I can't do that because I need that volume decrypted in order to run the truecrypt software which performs the function.
Any ideas other than decrypting the encrypted volume and starting from scratch?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Encrypted Volume Check: Volume Info on \\?\Volume{X}Can Not Read

Found this in my Event Viewer on each start/restart. I don't have any Volumes that I have encrypted. Is this malware? I've run everything prior to noticing including Windows Offline Defender.
Not sure if this is even the correct area to post this!

Answer:Encrypted Volume Check: Volume Info on \\?\Volume{X}Can't read

I'm going to take a guess, please upload a screenshot of the disk manager (Windows Key+R to open the Run dialog, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter).
Posting the actual entry from the Event Viewer can help.

I think I've successfully installed truecrypt on my back up media HDD. I chose the option to make an Outer volume & also a Hidden volume.

Apparently both were created successfully, but I can't seem to locate the Hidden volume to add files to it? I've entered both passwords correctly & I can see the main Outer volume when the disk is mounted, but I don't see where the hidden volume is or how to create a new folder within the hidden volume?

Answer:TrueCrypt: I see the "Outer" volume, but where is the "Hidden" volume?

Don't mount the outer volume. Enter your password for the inner volume only.

I have a problem with two external-hardrives that I cant access. I keep getting incorrect password or not a truecrypt volume I have one drive that is a 2 terabyte drive and another one that's 1 terabyte. They both where working fine when I tested them about a week ago. Since Saturday I have been trying to access the 2 terabyte drive, but I just keep getting incorrect password.

I have been searching the net for almost 3 days now but still cant find any solution.

Yesterday I also tested the 1 terabyte drive but still no luck. I know that both the drives cant be malfunctioning.

I really have allot of important files on the 2 terabyte drives, damn I just cant lose them, I really hope someone can help me with this, thanks.

Sorry there EternalSeeker, but your out of luck if you don't have the correct password. No one here on Seven Forums will lead you to any password cracker.

A Question, What kind of data are you protecting on 3 terabytes of drives?

Is that possible? I don't see any option in Truecrypt to name a volume

I installed the latest truecrypt on windows 7 rtm. I mounted a volume and when I wanted to dismount a dialog poped up and said that files within the volume were in use and whether or not I would like to forcefully dismount. I used 'unlocker' to see what could possibly be using files within the volume and the results showed that nothing was in use. I forcefully dismounted and I subsequently lost my work that was altered. I realized than unlocker was with incompatible with windows 7, after searching for a solution I found Lockhunter which is windows 7 compatible. This is what is showed me. I want to know how can I disable these processes from access/locking onto files on this volume?

Answer:TrueCrypt volume won't dismount unless I do it Forcibly

Using utilities like "Unlocker" to actually "unlock" is inherently dangerous to your data.

The fact that an object is "locked" means that one or more processes/apps still expect to be able to work with that object in its present form. Those apps have registered their intentions towards the object with the OS, and in turn the OS prevents other apps from accessing the same object in an incompatible manner until the first app acknowledges that it's finished.

"Unlocker" and other similar utilities do not induce the original app to "hurry up and finish using the file". Instead, they merely delete the information record which allows the OS to keep track of that link, without regard to whether the original app is yet to save all data or anything of the sort. As you've unfortunately found out, that can lead to data corruption. Conceptually, it's not all that different to using Task Manager to terminate the first process because the second one wants access to the object.

In your example above, the active locks ("handles") are possibly caused by your anti-virus doing stuff (it can run as "system"), and an open Windows Explorer pane focused on the z: drive.

I can't get windows 10 to search mounted truecrypt volumes, ie, type part of the file name into the "search windows" box and it doesn't bring up a "best match", I just get "no results found".
I have added the volumes to indexing locations in the indexing options (eg local disk W) and it appears to be indexing it. They are listed in the "included locations" and after a few minutes indexed items goes up from 3,000 to 10,000 but the search box doesn't find any of the files.
I have tried restarting the services
net stop wmpnetworksvc
net stop WSearch
net start Wsearch
net start wmpnetworksvc
And also "rebuild index" but it still doesn't function.

Any suggestions?

Configuration:Disk 0 - System [C] - [special library folders pointed to D]
Disk 1 - Data [D] - [changed to X for volume encryption process]
Disk 2 - Copy Data [E] - [mirror of D]

I have used truecrypt system encryption to encrypt Disk 0

I changed the drive letter of Disk 1 to X as I want to to mount this automatically with truecrypt on drive letter D when the system boots.

Should I have pointed the special folder libraries back at drive letter C before starting encryption of Disk 1, pointed them to drive letter X or will things be okay as they are?

Currently of course my libraries show as empty because they reference drive letter D not X. Not surprisingly I get an error to that effect when booting windows at the moment (i.e. "can't find D")

I am hoping that when Disk 1 [currently drive letter X] is encrypted and I set it to mount on drive letter D at boot then the current target for special library folders will have the correct drive letter to look at again (along with the data on Disk 1).

Only thing is that currently, if I attempt use drive letter D for anything [I was checking it out to see if it was free to use] I get a windows message saying the drive letter is in use. I can only think that this is the reference from C of the special library folders.

Does anyone have a view on this? I wonder if I am going to screw the referencing of the special library folders on C when I eventually mount the encrypted volume, Disk 1 [currently on drive letter X] ... Read more

Answer:Truecrypt System and Volume Encryption

It worked.

Mounting the data drive on d following encryption has resulted in Windows recognising the location of special folders previously relocated to D.

The encryption and drive mounting processes have not got in the way.

I want to use Truecrypt to encrypt my main backup HDD for my media & OS HDD's (which are two separate drives as it is)

For this back up drive, do I want to "Create an encrypted file container" (Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file)

"Encrypt a non-system partition/drive"? (Encrypts a non-system partition on any internal or external drive (e.g. a flash drive) Optionally creates a hidden volume)

I would say the "Encrypt a non-system partition/drive" since it's an external drive I only plug into my computer to perform backups & then unplug it properly when I'm done.

The only purpose of this backup HDD is to store in a safe place all data on computer in case my computer HDDs crash, so the entire HDD is available for encryption & backup. Ideally I want to encrypt the entire HDD, not just a partition of it.

Answer:Which volume of Truecrypt for media backup HDD?

Either will work - I prefer to use the Encrypted volumes/containers. Use this as a guide if you choose the same option:

Hi there,

I'm bugging around with this for three days now. Just for your information: I recently bought a 60GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD and two 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green hard disk drives. I originally planned to have them set up this way: OS + (unused) user folders on SSD, "real" user folder on one HDD linked to corresponding libraries. Both HDD (+eventually the SSD) should be encrypted with TrueCrypt. So far so good - when logging in, TrueCrypt recognizes the connected hard disk drives and asks me for the passwords. The drives (NTFS formatted) get mounted correctly ("E:" and "F:") and I can read/write to them like expected.

But here comes the problem: I can neither backup files FROM nor TO one of the TrueCrypt-mounted devices. It seems that Windows Backup and Restore can only backup from/to devices, which are listed in the disk manager. And sadly, the TrueCrypt devices aren't... Just the underlying hard disk drives, which are displayed as unformatted or "RAW".

Does anyone have a solution for this particular problem or any other suggestion how to organize my file/backup structure? My only requirement is, that both files in use and backups have to be encrypted and the access is easy. (Don't want to mess around for hours everytime windows boots just to access my files...)

Appreciate any help/ideas/suggestions.

Answer:Backup and Restore from/to TrueCrypt Volume

I've been fiddling with the exact same problem and have had some minor success: I can now perform a backup TO a truecrypt drive. It's a pretty simple workaround but it won't work on Windows 7 Home edition. Only on Win7 Professional and above. So here goes:
Mount your encrypted backup volume (mine is a container but it shouldn't be any different for a partition or disk). Right click on it in explorer and choose Share With -> Advanced Sharing -> Advanced Sharing -> Permissions. Remove "Everyone" and add yourself and "SYSTEM" give both read and right permissions. Now open the Control Panel and go to System and Security -> Backup -> Change Settings. Choose Save on a Network and browse for your shared folder (yes it's a folder now) under your computers name. After you select it enter your own user credentials and press OK. Now select the shared folder from the list, press next and set up your backup.

I had locations on encrypted truecrypt volumes in my Librarys so the backup failed. After i removed the checkmarks from them the backup finished succesfully.

Now only remains the question how you're supposed to backup files FROM the encrypted volumes.
Any ideas?

I used an external hard disk with an Autorun.inf file in the root directory to assign a label and an icon to the volume. But now I encrypted it with Truecrypt, and when I mount it, the Autorun.inf doesn't work and the label and the icon doesn't appear. I have
been able to assign the label using LABEL command from command prompt. However, I cannot assign the icon. Is there any way to assign the icon to the volume? Any help would be appreciated. Also, the solution should not be a registry tweak. The icon should appear,
irrespective of the PC it is mounted on.

I take it that you mean an encrypted partition rather than a container?

See screenshot from my machine:

E is a Truecrypt volume on an internal drive and is mounted. G is a Veracrypt volume on an external drive and is not currently mounted. Both have custom icons. I used software "Drive Icon Changer" and I will try to remember where I got it from if you're interested.

I'm not sure if this happened with 5.55, but with 5.56, when I hit the volume up or down on my keyboard to turn the sound down for everything, it turns down winamp's volume bar too. Sometimes I can move winamp's volume bar up and down and it won't even be working. What causes this? It's pretty annoying for the music to turn down twice as fast or winamp's volume bar to not even work at all.EDIT: Moved to a more appropriate forum

I've got an encrypted by truecrypt 1G WD elements SE volume.
Before accident, every time when I plugged this volume into my notebook, my system (windows 7 64) showed me a popup massage "You need to format the disc in drive I: before you can use it".
I didin't turn off it (I haven't known how), of course everything worked fine then,

but one day, accidentally I triggered it, and then, system instantly showed me
"the disk I: has been formated correctly" I didn't believe that disk was formated,
I opened truecrypt, I entered password, I tried to mount a disc, but a disk was completely empty. For 5 minutes I hadn't believed that disc was formated that fast.

There is any chanse to restore files on a disc?
I'm starting to believe that this is a permament erase

I guess, It's imposible to erase 10GB of files in such short time,
I think only a main entries to the encrypted volume have been deleted, but files are still, somewhere.

There are two types of formating Quick and Normal. Quick basically deletes your root directory but doesn't delete the data files. There are services and utilities available to try and recover your data but there are no guarantees.

I don't think any undelete utility will work and the fact that this is an encrypted drive will further complicate things.

A quick google search shows a number of utilities that say they can recover data after an... Read more

Ok I am trying to remount my backup HDD after formatting my main media HDD with truecrypt.

But now my media backup HDD isn't mounting and giving me the following error:

The device is not ready

Your system is not configured to auto-mount new volumes. It may be impossible to mount device-hosted truecrypt volumes. Auto mounting can be enabled by executing the following command and restarting the system:

So I don't understand why it's not mourning properly now on my main computer even thigh it mounted fine before I formatted my main media HDD.

I also don't understand where I execute & enable that Mountvol.exe/e file?

The data was able to be successfully mounted on a separate computer, so it's really odd my main computer is giving me this issue.

I just acquired the Eee 1005HAB netbook from a previous owner. It is running Windows XP and boots just fine. However, when inspecting the hard drive I found a hidden partition labeled "PE" which is 4.89GB formatted as FAT32. I have no idea what is in this partition but it does indicate that it only has 1.52GB free - so something resides there. Normally I wouldn't bother with it, but it is preventing a disc clone application from working - indicating that the drive has an unknown format. Anyone on here know if this partition is required or even normal for this netbook on Windows XP?

Answer:Hidden Primary Volume

It probably contains the files for system repair/reinstall/restore options. Most laptops have these partitions instead of shipping with a windows disk.

Glad folks like you seem to enjoy helping those of us that know enough to get ourselves in trouble. I'm another that had this issue creep up after only using Chrome now for a few years.

I have attached my logs. I can't get a RootRepeal log, running that program results in my PC rebooting after it displays "Initializing" for about 15 seconds.

And I did recently run a combofix, although i was unsupervised i followed directions on someone elses. I had just run DDS so i am not sure what to do after this.I need help asap as i really dislike waiting days for an answer to this topic like received in the past.

OK, start off knowing that all settings in folder view are set correctly to show system and hidden files. Also know that restore points can be set and retrieved. Also know that looking at the root there is no sign that System Volume Information even exists or that looking at C:\Windows that any $NtUninstaller files exist. Now the interesting part, if I do a search for $NtUninstall they all show up in the Results window and if I right click and go to properties all have Read Only and Hidden checked. Unchecking Hidden restores them visually however the the next download of a Microsoft patch defaults to hidden.

As for doing a search for System Volume Information it doesn't appear in the Search results at all as if it doesn't exist.

Opening a CMD window and entering at the C:\ prompt ATTRIB -s -h *.* /s /d should remove the hidden bits for all files on the system but as it scrolls down the list I see System Volume Information and it says Access Denied as it does for quite a few files. I've tried this in a command window and safe mode with a DOS prompt as administrator, no luck, no change.

In looking at the NTUSER.INI file this is all that's present;

ExclusionList=Local Settings;Temporary Internet Files;History;Temp

So, sorry for the long explanation but better to get all the easy answers out of the way first, has anyone got any suggestions to allow me to see the files / folders ?????

So I have a Blue Yeti, and I'm an online animator/voice actor. Whenever I record audio on my Blue Yeti (OR any other mic) I record about 4-6 inches from the mic, and turn the gain down enough that the audio doesn't peak as I yell or whatever. This is what you're supposed to do if you don't want your audio levels peaking and making your recording sound horrible and corrupted. However, afterwards, it means I have really quite recordings. Not a problem right? Now that it's recorded right, I can boost the volume of the entire clip afterwards right? WRONG. I'm not an audio expert so I must be missing something. But why in GODS NAME would the audio distort and peak AFTER it's recorded successfully? It's all there, it's all clean audio. If I turn the volume on my speakers all the way up it sounds CRYSTAL CLEAR! All I want to do is do that INSIDE the computer so that when I upload it to youtube people don't have to turn their speakers so far up. But if I increase the clips volume in the computer, it distorts! It sounds awful! Why?! I tried in Sony Acid and Audacity and they both do the same thing! Why?! I seriously don't understand what I'm missing here! I can take sound effects, and recordings made by other producers and crank them up nice and loud, but mine just fall apart! If anyone understands audio stuff, please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Answer:Soft Recording volume with Blue Yeti, increasing volume distorts audio

I have a home recording studio using Sonar X1 software.

I don't know about Acid, but it should allow clean recordings. Audacity the same way.

I record, generally, in the -10 level with my recording program, at 24 bits/44.1 Khz. At -10, I have plenty of headroom and can then adjust the levels after the recordings and at mixdown. I export the mix as a standard 16 bit/44.1Khz wav file and then "finalize" whatever I want to do to the song, including levels, with "Goldwave" (an audio editior).

I assume you are converting the audio to MP3? If that is the case, that may be where the distortion is occuring? I find that 128Kb MP3's are very poor and at a minimum use 198 Kb MP3's.

On my newly purchased Pro A200/PSAE7 the (hardware) volume control - front side, right from speaker plug - turns endless and when using it the volume does not change "smooth" - more "abrupt". Because of this there is no "fine tuning" possible.

Q: Does somebody else has the same hardware side (endless turn) and software side (no smooth volume change) situation?

Many thanks for any reply in advance!

Best regards,

Answer:Sat Pro A200/PSAE7 - Volume Control turns endless, no smooth volume change

"problem" of abrupt volume change when turning volume control disappeared. I am not sure if this is based on disable "TDispVol.exe" as start-up service or another reason.

I know I should read and followed the pinned piece before I asked for help, but given the emergency please excuse me, is what I encountered:
Blue Screen of death w/ description says uncorrectible hardware error, I guess that's truly bad.
I did the memory test using sony vaio/ microsoft OEM, memory is good.
I did the system restore several times, although completed and says successful, but blue screen keep coming back.
I went ahead did the CHKDSK, took me 4 and half hours, found 1 bad cluster, but corrected it says, then when i reboot windows, Intel Matrix Storage Console pops up at lower right hand corner of computer, telling me  "a drive is failing, back-up asap; seems to me it's port 1.
I know I need to back up, but given this situation, does it mean i have no choice but to expect this solid state drive is dying and can't be repair??

Hi all,

I have Toshiba Portege M800, and I have a problem with the volume wheel.
If I try to increase or decrease the volume by this volume wheel, it will change, but the volume not change linear.

For example, when I increase volume from 0 to something, volume is changed, during rolling, e.g. from 0-1-2-3-4-5-3-8-6 (thats just an example).

Why doesn't it change linear, e.g. 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 ?
Is it caused by software or it is hardware problem?

Could I claim the goods?

Answer:Portege M800 - volume wheel issue - volume level jumps

I have had a similar issue with the volume level on my Satellite notebook.
I tired everything; updated the BIOS, sound driver? I have also reinstalled my OS using the Roecvery disk but I didn?t notice any improvements.

Finally my ASP technician checked the volume wheel and cleaned the contacts and removed some dust.
This was the key?
The dirt affected the volume wheel functionality?

In my cases this helped but this does not mean that this will help you as well.
I think you should also update the BIOS and should check if you could update the sound driver.
If this will not help then it would be recommended to contact the ASP technician for opinion?

This on is quite perplexing to me. This is stemming from a volume problem that I had posted before. I have more detail and have narrowed down the problem but not the cause of such. When ever I click the volume control in winamp, not adjust necessarily, just click, my wave setting in my volume control (pannel that comes up by double clicking the speaker in the tray) drops. Of course this affects my overall volume. It is sparatic and does not drop the same amount two times in a row but will drop everytime I click volume in winamp. I am running winXP pro and have not installed so much as an update since the last time this was happening. The only thing I did change is I set up voice recognition in Office XP but I was having this problem before that. I have uninstalled and cleaned out all winamp files and reinstalled. Any suggestions? Winamp is the only player of any kind that this currently happens with.

Also, whenever I am using winamp to play an mp3 or streaming audio and I open another program, any program, or even just minimize/maximize a window, the audio starts cracking. This also has never happend before except of course when there is a heavy load on the system. As I said I am running XP pro, and FYI a Duron 900 cpu and 448MB RAM. As I am having these problems I am using 5% to 10% of my cpu and have 21000k physical memory availible according to task mgr.

I did some research at the Winamp message board and came up with this.

Here is a question I can't seem to find the answer to in the archives.

How can adjust the volume output from my Windows ME machine (with SoundMax Digital Audio) so that the volume of the background music I like to listen to (via RealOne Player version is quiet, but the other important sounds my PC makes (like email or calendar notifications) are loud enough so I can hear them?

I've seemingly tried all combinations of settings for the volume sliders/adjustments, including:

1) The volume knob on my speakers
2) The RealOne Player volume slider
3) The Windows volume control panel "Volume Control" slider
4) The WIndows volume control panel "PC Beep" slider

Even when the "PC Beep" volume slide is set to maximum, and the "Volume Control" slider is set near minimum in the Windows volume control panel, the PC beep is virtually inaudible when the background music is acceptably quiet (by adjusting the RealOne volume slider and/or the volume control on my speakers).

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some other way that I'm not thinking of to boost the volume of the system sounds my PC makes, while keeping the RealOne music volume low?

I have a problem with adjusting the volume. When I adjust the volume using the button on the left side of the laptop, I only can choose 3 "loudness levels":

No volume, very silent volume, and maximum volume (to loud).

Is this normal, doesn't anyone have problems with this?
I expect the problem is because of the digital volume adjuster. The adjuster doesn't register the exact position of the volume button. Every time when I get a phone call at work (I listen to internet radio), I turn off the radio using the adjuster on the side of the laptop. When I end the phone call, I always need to open the laptop and adjust the volume in the windows task bar, because when I use the volume adjuster on the left side of the laptop, it just immediately goes to maximum volume.

It?s very strange that your sound volume control contains only 3 volume levels?
I have noticed that Toshiba has released a new sound driver (v. on the European driver page.

So how about the sound driver update?
The sound driver controls definitely the sound volume and in my opinion it?s a worth a try.

Good luck

Windows XP Home
RealPlayer 10.5

Ok, I used to have RealPlayer and all it's junk till I wised up
and removed it from my system over a year ago.

However, I recently installed the basic RealPlayer (that is...only allowing
the features that I needed for video/audio) in order to watch NASA TV
e.g. DEEP IMPACT and today's DISCOVERY launch.

My question is regarding why, when I mute or adjust the volume on
the RealPlayer, that it also does the same to the computer's Volume
Control (Speaker Icon in System Tray...Wave setting).

I had been viewing on the RealPlayer, muted the sound and then later
was wondering why I was not able to hear any of my videos, music, etc.
The thought occurred to me to check the Speaker Icon and, sure enough,
there was a check at Wave>>Mute.

Is there a setting I can check/uncheck that will allow RealPlayer and
Computer volume to be independent of one another?

Thank you,

My Windows 7 was installed in Drive C: in Primary partition.

I only have another drive D:, which is also a Primary partition and 200GB in size.

I need to create another drive. So, I use 'Shrink Volume' on Drive D: and free 30GB.

Then 30GB become free space and when I right click on that, I choose to 'Simple Volume' and then format it as NTFS and assign the drive letter E:. All of a sudden after I did that, all the partitions(C: and D now no longer say "Primary Partition". The blue color on top of the partitions also changed to a yellow/brownish color. My guess is that they have been converted to a Simple Volume too.

Well, then I just restart my PC and astonished that my windows 7 can't load. Only a blank screen come ahead to me. No error message given.

I use my Windows 7 DVD and in repair windows section, I use command line and by 'diskpart', i found, my all partition (C: and D: and E present their and there file system is: 'NTFS' and Type is "Simple". No drive there marked as a 'System' or 'boot'.

What should I do now, to recover my Windows 7?

Any kind of help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry but who says that volume regulator should pop up? This regulator will pop up just if you click on small volume symbol placed in task bar.
Moving volume control dial nothing will be shown, just the small icon will be changed and show one, two or three small lines depending on volume level.

So I installed some new Windows updates today (whatever was available via Windows Update). I restarted my computer to enable the updates. When it came back on, my task bar was white for some reason. I solved that problem using the first solution I found here: [SOLVED] Taskbar is white

Well I didn't change my volume before doing that, so I don't know if it worked before I followed that solution. I do know that after following that solution, my volume meter no longer shows up when I change the volume via the keys for it on my keyboard. This is pretty annoying because it was convenient to always see my audio level when I adjusted the volume.

I am on a HP Pavilion dv7-6c95dx with beats audio, running Windows 7 64-bit. When I changed my volume, the beats audio logo with a volume meter under it would pop up, but it no longer shows up. I haven't noticed any change in the quality of my sound, and I can still actually adjust the volume level. The problem is the volume meter no longer displays to show me the volume level.

If anyone has any clue as to why this happened, that would be great!

Answer:Volume meter no longer displays when I adjust volume level

Try rolling back any keyboard driver updates, or go to the keyboard manufacturers website and download most up to date driver(s) from there.

When I play games, I tend to volume right down to get rid of the music etc,
but this also turns down the volume for notifications and then I don;t hear them.
Is there any way to control these volumes separately ?

Answer:How can I turn the volume off in a game I am playing without lowering my notifications volume?

Most games I've seen have an option to turn off music/effects within the game itself. Meaning you could hush them, but keep your notifications at whatever volume.

I normally run a deep scan using Avast Free Edition every 10 days but due to a heavy work load I could not run it for a 3-4 months but when i ran it yesterday Avast picked up a infection in the System Volume Information folder of the C:Drive.
When I tried to move it to the chest (Quarantine) Avast tells me to reboot the computer with a boot scan.
When i doo this the bootscan log shows no infection but rescanning shows the same infection in the same file. Cleaning & deleting the file via Avast gave the resposnse of rebooting with a bootscan and still the detetction persists. Rescanned in Safe Mode using Avast and still a detection is shown.
I installed MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and did a deep scan but nothing was detected. I rescanned in Safe Mode but still MBAM found nothing.
Then I installed ESET Online scanner (as it was recommended by many). The deep scan showed no detections. I did not try this in Safe Mode.
I also installed MalwareByte Anti-Rootkit and did a scan in both normal and safe mode. Nothing was detected.
So i removed all my restore points using CCleaner and created a new restore point. Then rescanned with Avast and it still detects the same file as a rootkit. Rescanned with all other previously mentioned tools and it showed nothing.
The issue is the one underlined in Red (below image). The other detection in the memory is appararently a false-positive in this version of Avast according to a post on their forum.

Hello melb1946Does your keyboard have volume buttons? I know in my experiences I have sometimes run into similar scenarios. In my case the problem was accidentally hitting the volume button on my keyboard. How is your sound setup in Windows 7? Is your monitor set as the default sound device? Do other sound devices increase their volumes?Probably one of the best ways to isolate the problem would be to put the monitor on another computer and see if the sound continues to appear and go up.

Okay so I went to hop on my desktop today, it wasn't waking up when I move mouse etc, which was odd because it was on. So I restarted it and I've had two options for windows 10 for a while now volume 1 and 4 I don't know why, I've always used 1 but now when I click 1 it just goes to black screen, monitor is awake cause my light turns blue when it is, I pressed windows key with something I forgot what button while in black screen and sound was coming through. So I restated again and went on volume 4 and that worked fine out dated stuff since I haven't used it but it was working. I would like to get back on my main volume, or at least know what the issue is.

i did a Nvidia graphic card update a day or two ago as well.
i also tried to go to the troubleshoot screen when you open windows 10 which worked fine, but when I clicked restore to a previous time-black screen- and then I tried removing everything completely clicked that option -black screen-
Thanks for help ahead of time!!

Answer:Windows 10 black screen on volume 1(main) and not Volume 4(old)

UPDATE: so I went into volume 4 and attempted a complete wipe again, once I clicked it screen went black for a while and no sign it was working, so now I put in my windows XP disk and am going to attempt a clean install of that, then just upgrade to windows 10.

Have you tried a different set of headphones? Have you tried those headphones in another machine?

This has disappeared.

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

I year ago i was trying to save power. I was having issues with my cpu overheating. I went somewhere in my pc, i forgot where and in an effort to lower power consumption, i combined sounds in the volume mixer. The cpu issue has been solved. Now i want to
open 3 web pages that all use sound and i want to be able to have 3 different volume levels for each. I've forgotten where I went to to combine the volume levels. That what i want to know: where to go, in windows,k where i can un-combine the volume levels.

For years I have been using TC on Win-XP. In case of a damaged OS I used a Reatogo-StartCD ( similar like Bart) together with Acronis TrueImage (the so-called PlusPack) and TC. My backups are on a separate TC-encrypted HDD.
I tried to do the same now with a laptop under Win7. However, Reatogo does only work with XP.
Therefore, it would NOT be possible to do a recovery of the OS-partition!
The TC-start disk is of no help (because Trueimage cannot be included there).
The TI-start disk is of no help, either (because it does not contain TC to open the encrypted containers on the external HDD).
A win7 Start-CD doesn't help at all, because it is containing neither of them.
The Acronis helpdesk so far could not help (seems to consist only of stupid callcenter girls).
I would not mind using a differnet backup software (which one?), but the problem would still be the same: how to back up and restore the encrypted Win7 OS to/from an external HDD?

I'm am uncertain about how or if encryption on a boot drive would affect performance after the encryption code has been entered in?

For example, I have a 1TB HDD that has Windows 7 Home installed on it. On this drive, it requires a truecrypt password to unlock the drive in order for it to start booting. After I enter the password, it boots and all, but my concern now is if it needs to further decrypt other files now that I unlocked the drive for full use?

It just needs one password and the whole drive is unlocked. Does it need to further decrypt other files after the drive has been unlocked?

I'm using a 3-cipher encryption method for the drive just to boot into it. All the files are unlocked after booting in.

Since Truecrypt also has an option to mount encrypted drives while using a different HDD, would I get the same performance as a non-encrypted drive after it's unlocked? But the only difference is being this drive is a storage center for games, documents, etc, the works.

Would it make sense to have another HDD as my boot drive and use the encrypted HDD as a data storage after I mount the drive within the operating system? Will I be able to run programs after it's mounted from the unecrypted drive and NOT suffer performance degration?

Answer:I have a question about Truecrypt-encrypted HDDs

Yes it needs to continually encrypt/decrypt information written to the disk. It is not an *unlock* in the way you are thinking of it.

Yes it affects performance, but that is more dependent on your CPU than your hard drive.

The only way to mitigate the performance loss is with a drive with a built in AES module, but I do not know if truecrypt will work with those anyway.

I saved a macrium image backup onto an external drive that is encrypted (not just a volume on the disk, the whole disk itself). Is it possible to decrypt the image from the rescue media when restoring the image? or can you keep the disk mounted when running the rescue disk? Thanks in advance!

Answer:encrypted image restore (truecrypt)?

The rescue media will need to include a copy of TrueCrypt. Once you've booted into its environment, run TrueCrypt and unlock your encrypted drive.

Hi all. I have tried using TrueCrypt 7.1a, which encrypts USB sticks. I have a 2 GB USB stick which didn't get encrypted although I followed every step. I have been trying for more than an hour, even with a different USB stick, but with no success Here are the points which I followed (Sorry for the bombardment of info but please bear with me...)

These are the steps I followed:

*Loaded TrueCrypt.exe and clicked Create volume

*I clicked Next (Create a file container selected)

*Clicked Next (Standard TrueCrypt volume selected)

*Under Volume Location I selected a file (My , which I created in my USB folder)

*Under Encryption Options left it as it is, clicked Next

*My Volume Size I chose 100 MB

*Chose a password under Volume Password, clicked Next

*I formatted my USB

*Once it was done I closed the window

*Then in the TrueCrypt window I clicked Tools-->Traveler Disk Setup

*I chose my drive letter (I)

*I selected Auto-mount TrueCrypt volume

*Under TrueCrypt volume to mount I selected my file, My

*Finally for Mount volume as drive letter, I chose T: (a different drive to my USB)

*Those were the only changes made under TrueCrypt Traveler Disk Setup

*I safely removed my USB and plugged it back in. It auto played and when I opened the folder the files didn't get encrypted. I am really confused

Help would be really appreciated.

Answer:Volume mixer becomes unresponsive when I change volume

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

Bought a G510 (59411985) a couple the other week and just tried to listen to music in heaphones. The volume is (in my mind) extremely low even with iTunes and the system volume at the highest volume. Have been browsing threads on here where one suggest open the Smart Audio application and raise the levels on the "mixer", but my version only seems to have volume levels for headphones and mic, and the headphone level is already max. A suggestion from the Smart Audio help section talks about disabling the factory set headphone limiter /depending on the system, but I can't find where I do that. Btw, that Smart Audio interface is probably the ugliest one I've seen.

Hello sevenforums,
I just received a new keyboard today: Thermaltake Challenger Ultimate. I went from a Logitech G15.

First thing I did was connect the keyboard and install the software that came along on the CD, it probably also installed the correct drivers. First after this did I uninstall the software and drivers from the old Logitech G15. But before that, and now after, the volume buttons on my new keyboard is still not adjusting the volume when I press them.

A speaker-icon like this shows up when I press the volume buttons, so its not that the keys are not working: (ignore the text behind it, its me writing an assignment)

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Hello Guys,
this is my first post on eightforums,
i recently got a new laptop "asus vivobook" that came preloaded with windows 8.
The laptop comes with a hybrid 24 GB ssd (8GB of those are for the system files, windows 8 is installed on,the remaining are in a 2nd partition for recovery)
i deleted the recovery partition and made a recovery on an 8 GB usb drive, because im dual booting a different linux os alongside windows.
I used rEFInd boot manager to boot the 2 operating systems, everything boot and works fine.
However, since the dual booting started i noticed that the windows 8 loading time has became a bit slower, when i choose to sart windows 8 the asus logo appears and under it this message
"Scanning and repairing volume (\\?\Volume{...large hex identifier..}): 100% Complete"
it stays for 2,3 seconds and then windows 8 start,i ran a chkdsk for the c drive, but that didnt solve the problem.
Is there any way to fix this issue,

Answer:Scanning and repairing volume (\\?\Volume...) on startup

The problem you are seeing could be caused by the Win8 "fastboot" feature. Disable fastboot and see if that fixes the problem. It can occur on dual boot and other multi partition configurations.

Hello. Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to read this.  I`m in a crux...
Here are my computer specs:
OS: Windows 7 64bit home premium (latest windows updates installed)
CPU: Intel i5 3570K (slightly oc`d to 43)
mobo: Asus p8z77-v Pro/thunderbolt
gpu: Asus HD 7850
sound card: none (using onboard realtek)
logitech mouse
cheap keyboard
speakers: logitech externally powered (two speakers 1 subwoofer - really cheap)
I put all the parts together myself and had the system running nice - before I moved.  At the time there were no problems with sound I also had a DAC connected via USB, so I was switching between headphones and speakers depending on the occassion.
Here`s where my prob started.  I recently moved.  I carried the pc by hand to ensure it didn`t get banged up or incur any excessive shock.  Aside from the slight bobbing motion of my walking I`d believe no harm was done to the machine.
I hooked it up at the new apartment, with the hdmi cable going from ati card to the TV.  The TV plays back the sound perfectly - running the sound through the speakers though the volume is nearly inaudible over the fan sound.  I tried to play sound through various software, youtube, windows media player, vlc, and others (ensuring their respective volume sliders were at full), but it`s still quiet.
When I hooked up the PC this second time the mouse and keyboard were most likely connected to different usb... Read more

Answer:Very quiet volume although all (?) volume controls are maxed.

As you say the sound over your TV is excellent, there is almost certainly nothing wrong with the performance of your on-board sound. Without seeing them, am I right in thinking that you take a lead from the audio out at the back of your computer to the speakers, and their internal amplifier drives the sound output ?  If so, and this may be very silly, is this lead plugged into the correct socket at the back of the computer ?
Failiing that, see if you can borrow some speakers from a friend, any speakers at all will do. This will enable you to determine if the problem is with your speakers or the sound output.

So I recently moved my microphone/headset plugs to the rear jacks of my computer, the reason I did this was because when plugged in to the front jacks, my microphone had a white noise I couldn't get rid of, the rear jacks doesn't have this issue, but my mic volume is quiet

I think it might be a driver issue? I know its not my mic because when plugged in the front, people can hear my voice fine but there's just static noise too, and it's sort of loud

Answer:Microphone Volume is quiet, even at maximum volume

More PC info is needed. Including what sound and sound driver you have.

The front panel jacks are just an extension of the sound jacks. Usually if there is problem, the front do not work correctly but the read does. Are you plugging the mic into the correct Pink jack? If it were plugged into the wrong jack that can happen.
