Download Manager, Wallpaper Manager

Question: Download Manager, Wallpaper Manager

Just looking for recommendations on these two kinds off apps.
Download manager-I've used Flashget in the past. It's OK so I could go back to it. I'm just wondering if there are any others that are worth looking at and why.
Wallpaper manager-I've noticed that many of the wallpaper managers strictly work with photos from the hard drive. I'd be interested in something similar to Google Screensaver that pulls wallpaper from the web, even from news stories. It looks like there was a Google Wallpaper for a while but it closed. I used Eyetide several years ago but they became a spyware trojan so I guess that's the other thing. Spyware free, please. It's too bad. It used to be a good product. I noticed one called Cool Wallpaper but I dunno.

Preferred Solution: Download Manager, Wallpaper Manager

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Check out this great new Wallpaper Manager from MSN Canada.
There is a small download (477KB) installer file, which then goes on to install the program and also download the wallpapers.
The installer will ask you if you want to make live search as default, make MSN your homepage. Take your decision and un-check/check options if you have to. For your information the Wallpaper changer also adds itself to the start-ups list.
You can edit, flip, add graphic elements or text, change settings, insert foreground images, create a slideshow of images and do a lot of things with it. Quite a nice app, actually ! Thanks James.

Hey,
My son's pc is acting really strange. Every couple of minutes it get pop ups and my wallpaper changes and the home page changes. A box also pops up saying the trojan.w32.looksky is detected on my machine. This is very annoying.
When i try to close it, a browser window opens and its usually some kind of virus or spyware protection. I just always close the windows.
I am sending you a hijackthis log. Could you please take a look at it for me please?

Thanks
Fay

Hello,

Today my computer background changed to a big blue screen with a black box and in which it says 'YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED' and a popup in the tray telling me there was a security threat, and to click the balloon to fix, which I did not as I have seen these before.

I cannot change my wallpaper. I tried from system properties, but everything in the panel is greyed out, and it will not let you click on anything to change the wallpaper. I tried right clicking on pictures in IE8, but same thing, the 'Set as Background' is greyed out and I cannot click it.

The taskmanager will not come up either, and it says the admin disabled it.

Below is my DDS.txt log, but I was only able to get the attach.txt, not the ark.txt. When I ran 'GMER', using the settings provided, it would not let me save. The instant the scan ends (I assume), the program disappears.

Here is the DDS.txt:

I was running BitDefender, and the day before, it had already deleted explorer.exe. But my computer was still working. I just had to use Task Manager to open programs. Today, whole running BitDefender, I was looking on the internet for a way to download another explorer.exe, and I found a zip file and downloaded it. BUT I can't unzip it without explorer.exe. And while scanning, BitDefender must have deleted my Task Manager. Now, when I start my computer, I have nothing! No taskbar, start menu, icons, anything! Just wallpaper. And when I control-alt-delete, I get the menu, but when I choose Task Manager, nothing happens Can somebody help me? Please?

Here is my basic problem:

Explorer.exe does not start. Just the wallpaper, no icons, start button, or task manager.

Fixes:
1 out of 10 reboots ctrl+alt+delete will work and I can run exploere.exe from task manager.

1 out of 10 reboots icons may appear, but programs won't open. (This includes using desktop shortcuts or going through the start button menus...)

Safe mode, works.
Safe Mode with networking, does NOT work.
System restore, been there done that...problem continues.
Last known good config....been there done that problem continues.

I have been having this problem off and on mostly all year.

Problem #2 (just started): Black screen...when windows tries to load letters are missing in the "choose any key to proceed" etc....
Think its the video card so hubby switched to the onboard video so I could d/l an update for the NVIDIA card. But see problem #1, can't get online!

Any ideas? I've been all over the internet, done everything I've found people are doing with my same problem...but lucky for them their task manager seems to work as well system restores and safe modes with networking.

Oh and last but not least, I did attempt a repair of the OS with the disc...but some idiot put a password in so I can't even do a repair off the disc!!!!!!!!!!

Which brings me back to solutions that involve downloads from the internet...the computer won't even safe mode with network! So I need a solution that does not involve the internet.

boot into safe mode and start > run > type in msconfig and hit enter.

go to the startup tab and click on disable all.

restart into regular mode, see if explorer will launch properly.

The story this far is that a downloaded music torrent file turned out to be a bunch of spyware. It left the desktop icons flashing, changed the clock to say virus alert, added porn and antispyware shortcuts on the desktop. I ran spybot which found some trojans, spyware etc, removed them and rebooted the computer. At this stage I had no icons or task manager only desktop wallpaper. I can't use control alt del or anything else. Nothing comes up only a blank desktop.
I went into safe mode (which is all i can really run in now) and went through the steps about removing malware. I have gone through all of the steps (to the best of my knowledge), except super antispyware which won't install in safe mode. I have ran adaware se, avg, spyware doctor, and spybot.
At this point I have no idea what to do. There doesn't seem to be any infections but I can't run in normal mode so something is obviously wrong. I did try a system restore to a month ago when everything was fine (from safe mode) and when I booted to normal mode .. same problem.

I will attach my logs and hope for the best.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered
Ryan

Windows constantly notifies me of Spyware present on my computer.
I've run Avast twice through w/ the bootscans. It's removed what it can but the spyware notifications still pop up.
Task manager and Wallpaper is locked, although I do know how to unlock them through regedit.
It is just a pain to have to re-edit the registries in order to enable the wallpaper and task manager each time I boot up.
Would really like this removed.
Thanks in advance. =D

The task manager is disabled, and i cant even change it to enabled. I keep on getting Internet Speed monitor popups and other Dirty popups and fake warnings from windows security center. My computer is a disaster. Every few seconds the computer refreshes"

there's all kinds of weird files in the root of C: and all kinds of messed up junk... is this even worth it to fix or should i just reformat? I downloaded the hijack program but it won't let me create a log file it gives me a system error... if you really want I can post the screenshots of it but I'm not certain I want to fix all of these problems it seems like a disaster. For some reason I want to say it started with this weird adobe update that kept popping up whenever i loaded the computer (i'm not the primary user on the computer so i just kept disregarding it) it wanted to install something i clicked cancel a bunch of times on system boot i just got sick of seeing it so i cilcked install figured it was for acrobate reader or something but it seemed like a day later everything went to hell...

i've read a lot of these posts on here it seems like its everywhere on my system and people want u to download 3 or 4 different programs to get rid of it all isn't this a known infection yet?

I'm just new here. My system recently got very slow and locking up with antispy-spider and vista antivirus360.

Hello!

My brother is using Windows 7 and suddenly after boot menu the computer reaches his wallpaper, with the mouse icon moving fine but no foldiers, files, startmenu or anything else showing.

I people with the same problem online opened Task Manager and opened Explorer.exe to make it work, only Ctrl Alt Del brings us to a black screen which disappears after a few seconds and take us back to the blank wallpaper. I can reach the Control Panel or anything else really when I right click the wallpaper and go to any of the options that bring me into some folder.. but when I'm in a folder and click anything, it won't work. I tried to open Task Manager like that too, or even Explorer.exe, but nothing happens.

Safe Mode works fine bytheway and can't seem to find any errors.

He doesn't have an Anti Virus has his subscription finished lately.. I tried to download AVG during safe mode with networking, but I'm unsure whether it's doing the job right..

Any other options?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Windows 7 blank wallpaper + Task manager doesn't work

"He doesn't have an Anti Virus has his subscription finished lately"

Big mistake. A PC without up-to-date antivirus software will become infected with malware within hours if it's connected to the internet. Please post on the malware forum here: Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help - Tech Support Forum

You must install an up-to-date antivirus as a first step, otherwise the advice you get from the malware forum on removing existing malware will be a waste of time as your PC will just get infected again.

Hello,

Upon start up only my wallpaper shows. I cannot see the welcoming screen at all, just black. There are no icons, no task bar, no start menu, nothing, just a blank screen other than my wallpaper. I cannot right click the desktop either. My mouse is non-existent.

Ctr alt delete causes my screen to also go black. I press the down arrow to where i think the task manager is and i press enter. The black screen than disappears and i am back on my wallpaper. I know the task manager popped up but i just can't see it.

I have ventrilo and my ventrilo server on startup ( like i always do ) and when i alt tab to what i think is the ventrilo window and press enter, i hear the confirmation that i entered my server.

This is extremely depressing, having just "upgraded" to windows 7 only to run smack into a problem.

I've been using IDM (6.25 build 3 most recently) happily for quite some time. For Christmas I purchased an online class which streams (?) from a .com website. I paid $128 for the class which remains online. Although I can view it anytime, I'd like to have it on my hard drive so I can put it on my laptop and watch it in bed instead of sitting at my desktop computer. Also I've purchased classes in the past and the website went out of business and *poof* my purchased classes went with them!!

When I use IDM to download the .flv file and play it back using Windows media player, I only get audio...no video.

Can anyone suggest:

-- a solution
-- another program I can use?

Thanks for the assist!

IDM is currently at 6.25 build 12. IDM only downloads files it doesn't play them. That's the job of your media player. An alternate media player you might try is VLC available at Major Geeks.

It looks you have a problem in IDM's dynamic file segmentation. Try to download the IDM again from its site, make a fresh install and check if the problem persists.

Hi Guys,
I recently downloaded bbc iplayer, when I click on it, it - rightly says I have no programmes to watch.

I click through the "download programmes" button which brings me to the iplayer home page - so far so good.

I select (for example) TV, John Bishops Britain, then select download options, for iplayer desktop-"click" and ....drumroll, nothing, nyada, zilch!!

I de installed and reinstalled thinking perhaps there was a corrupt file somewhere, this made no difference.

I then selected download for windows media player and got this message;

Software upgrade required
To download BBC iPlayer programmes please upgrade your version of Windows Media Player. Click here to get the latest version from Microsoft.

So far as I can see for my OS (XP pro) wmp11 IS the latest version available and the one I'm using.

It's really quite frustrating, I have had no luck on the support site or, so far by trawling through the net looking for answers. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in anticipation and best regards,
Brian.

Answer:BBC Iplayer download manager - wont download!!!

Instead of downloading it through the desktop program download them on line they should go strait to your Iplayer desktop
go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/
go to the required show
scroll under the video
click "download options"
then "for iplayer desktop"

Quote:
A free download manager designed to integrate seamlessly with Windows 7 is now available from Microsoft. Dubbed the Microsoft Download Manager, the utility is designed, as the label implies, to help users administer their downloads beyond the boundaries of the browser. More often than not, downloading very large files can be problematic, especially in the context of an unreliable connection. It is precisely in scenarios like these that a download manager will carry out any download tasks to the end, unlike browsers missing this functionality.

?The Microsoft Download Manager enables you to download files from the Internet in a more reliable and faster way than using a browser alone. Using the Download Manager makes it easier to download large files such as an application or multimedia files,? Microsoft explained.

According to the Redmond company, the Microsoft Download Manager comes to the table with support not only for Windows 7, but also for Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Microsoft Download Manager was designed to work with Internet Explorer 8, IE7 and IE6 but also with Firefox 3 and Firefox 2.

There is not a built-in "Download Manager" within any version of Windows. What are you trying to download?

Question: Download Manager??

I recently downloaded and installed one of those free download managers.

I had been using one called "WellGet", but it stopped working for some reason, and the author no longer has a web site.

I know a lot of those things have spyware, adware, and malware. I had been using WellGet for several years, and had no indication of any infections from it, or that it even contained any of those things itself.

I have a primitive archaic dial up, which is why I have even considered and used a download manager. The capability to resume downloads is critical when you've been downloading something for hours and then it disconnects. My virus defs are approaching 40MB now, and the daily updates I do, manually by the way, just about require the ability to resume if there is a disconnect. There is nothing quite as bothersome as having a large download interrupted and then having to start all over again.

I would switch to broadband and be done with the whole issue, but I live in a rural area and broadband is just not that reliable. I've considered satellite, but that seems like it would be just as much hassle as dial up.

In any case, I Googled on download managers, and came across a link for reviews by that Spybot S&D guy. He recommended "LeechGet" and "Download Express" as spware and adware free, but I tried them and was not very satisfied with their GUI

So, I am currently trying "Free Download Manager" (FDM). I use McAfee SiteAdvisor... Read more

Answer:Download Manager??

Hi BobJam,

Stick with FDM, you won't get a better download manager - it's versatile, can resume downloads, and you can even tweak the number of download connections into which your download is split to do concurrent downloading on parts of a single file. Two thumbs up as the best download tool - only on Windows, however afaik.

Question: Download Manager

I recently gave up my Direcway satellite broadband and returned to dial-up . My Dial-up ISP has an accelerator program (Propel) that works pretty good for browsing but is useless for downloads. I get about 2.7kbps. A simple definitions update from AVG takes almost 45 minutes for a 5Mb file. I looked on www.download.com and found quite a number of utilities after searching on "Download Manager". Among them were Kazaa and a couple of other names I've seen associated with spyware.

So I'm looking for a recommendation on the best free download manager and also whether there are any gotchas associated with download managers in general.

I'm running Win98SE with a MyIE2 browser on a P2 Dell desktop. Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Was trying to download freeocr from their website (unsuccessfully), when I noticed an increase in pop ups. When checking the uninstall list of programs saw this one. Googled it and not happy with what I saw.

I uninstalled it, but what I found on internet suggested downloading other programs to be sure all aspects of it were deleted from system. As you can guess this is how I ended up with the problem to begin with.

Have you had experience with this before?

Thanks.

I have used GetRight for a while and liked how it can connect multiple times to a server and really increase the download speed, but I can never figure out how to schedule downloads or get things to download one after another.

I also used Flashget for a bit, but got sick of the ad's.

Basically, I am after a download manager that allows mulitple connections to the server, allows for scheduled downloads and will allow me to set things to download one after another.

Suggestions?

What do you think is the best download manager and why?

TIA

Answer:Best download manager

Free Download Manager (freedownloadmanager.org). I've used it for quite a while. When I first found it it was the only one that I could find that was actually free and useful. Probably different now, but I dont really have a reason to switch other than just curiousity.

It's loaded with alot of features. I like the bandwidth controls and how it can organize your files.

Only one problem I have is on my Vista Desktop. It doesnt like IE8 very much, IE8 crashes when you attempt to close it. But works fine on my Vista Laptop with IE8.

It's open source, high traffic user forum are just a couple of other good reasons to trust and use it.

I'm open to alternatives though, so am looking forward to other opinions.

This is a two-part question that breaks down into the categories of freeware and software you have to pay for. In specific, I'm looking for informed users of download managers.About 3 years ago, I tried asking the Wikipedia editors of the comparative table of download managers to update it (because it's woefully incomplete) and the short answer was "Do it yourself." The long answer was a bit better, but the excuse given for why most DMs weren't listed at all was because they only list DMs that have a page on Wikipedia. When I searched Wikipedia and posted a list of all the DMs on Wikipedia that were NOT in the table, that's when I got blown off. Not being an expert on the topic (although I've tried a few from the very LONG list that are available) of DMs and audio/video DMs, I wisely declined. So, here I am, looking to BC members to see if I can get a good idea of which DMs are top of the heap. Please keep in mind a few points:I dumped Download Accelerator Plus because of the adware and some other issues.I am dumping Free Download Manager because it doesn't allow me to pause my downloads.I had problems with Go!Zilla when I tried using it.I've used LeechGet and JDownloader, but formed no opinion yet.I'm also dumping FlashGet 3.7 because there is no way to completely disable P2P connections with it, and also because it's trying to get me to install the Simplified Chinese Language Pack when I haven't visited any sites that ... I really want to be able to line up all the updates I wwant to save and then run them between 1am and 7am on one machine.Does anything exist that can do this and if so what is the best one? Thanks

Answer:Download Manager

For Windows, you can go click here and type in XP (for example), click "Search", that will list all the updates available, select the ones you want by clicking "Add", then click on "View Basket", click "Download" and choose where you want to save them on your hard drive.

Question: Download Manager

I need a good download manager (preferably free but I'll buy if worth it). I unfortunately have to use HughesNet which limits me to 450MB of data per day. However they don't limit usage from 11pm-4am. Problem is I'm at work in those hours and I have files to download that are up to 4GB. Is there a good download manager that will allow me to set a time for multiple downloads and have them start automatically in that 11-4 window?

And sorry if this a repeat thread but the others I found were a couple of years old so I thought there might be something new out there. Thanks!

Answer:Download Manager

You may want to check the Internet Tools section of the download pages. This will probably have a few tools that may or may not meet your requirements.

I've used Free Download Manager in the past and liked it, but it has been so long that I can't recall if it has the scheduling capabilities that you require. (Although, with the proper research of the command-line interface, you may be able to get it to work with Windows inbuilt scheduler)

Hi,

I dont know why Microsoft dont hear to customers .... maybe it's not in their DNA.

I have IE 8 and still it has same download window popping up everytime when user downloads something. I want to whether there is any plugin/add-on to manage downloads. I know there are few download manager softwares, but I dont want add another software in my already crowded system. (And thats why I havent installed Firefox)

Basically I am looking for a download manager to resume downloads after I have shut down the system or there is a breakage in internet connection. Firefox does have kind of DM ............ cant Microsoft atleast learn from them!?!

Thanks and regards,
Nirav
