Bug won't let me access Task Manager, Safe Mode, MsConfig etc. + slowing down my comp

Question: Bug won't let me access Task Manager, Safe Mode, MsConfig etc. + slowing down my comp

Hi,

It seems that I have the same issue as this person http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/1144834-virus-wont-let-me-access.html . I can't use task manager or msconfig, stuff like malwarebytes doesn't work, safe mode crashes and won't allow me to do anything + i have performance issues in video games or music production software.

In the following post(s) I'll attach the results of the scans with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool after the scans are over (First, Addition and shortcut).

Preferred Solution: Bug won't let me access Task Manager, Safe Mode, MsConfig etc. + slowing down my comp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It seems that the virus is blocking other tech support sites other than this one too! I'm really scared, I would really appreciate help as soon as possible!

to sum up, I can't run task manager, msconfig, any kind of malwarebytes type program, MSE doesn't detect anything, it blocks certain sites, safe mode can accessed but I can't do anything with it - an error show up shortly after running it.

(os: win XP) Hi i hope you could help me with this humongous problem i'm having. It started after i downloaded some application. my antivrus (mcafee 9.0) shutdown and through a process viewer i could see it kept trying to get back on(since it was using up al of cpu) but it couldnt.
task manager couldnt be accessed , it said it has been disabled my admin.
system restore was disabled! i tried restoring to "best known config" through the F8 option while booting, no luck.
Then all of a sudden it boots to the login part and once i login my wallpaper loads and nothing else happens- no icons, no task bar, no response to ctrl+alt+del. only mouse pointer(which moves normally). The WORST part: tried using safe mode and every time it finishes loading files my system restarts. tried all 3 safe mode options in fact tried all F8 options.

Now I've loaded a new windows in a separate windows folder so that my old windows files are not affected. i ran a virus scan(McAfee latest) through this and quarantined all detected viruses. However, my original windows still shows the same problem- no desktop, no safe mode etc. i have several important files which i cant lose so formatting is NOT an option. Reinstalling windows is also NOT an option mainly because Ive reinstalled windows twice in the last 4 months and i don't want to give into the virus this time. And yes, once its fixed i am switching to a new OS. Windows is a nightmare.

Answer:Cannot run safe mode, stuck at dsktop without icons/taskbar/access to task manager

Would not getting a reply mean this problem has been solved before or would it mean i should give up?

Everytime I go to Run -> MSConfig, it shows up for a brief second and then disappears.

The same thing happens when I try to Ctrl+Alt+Delete to access the task manager.

Here's a HijackThis Log if it helps at all.

Hi, I'm new here and have been having some problems with my computer. I recently found out I had the MSBLAST virus and got rid of that (besides for any possible registry entries like the one I saw on here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run). Everytime I push CTRL+ALT+DEL to access task manager it goes away after 1 second and I can't access regedit or msconfig. I have read the other posts on it and it still didn't do anything for me. I'm a newbie pretty much but I would like some help. I also ran the W32.SpyBot.Worm check and it said my computer wasn't infected with it. I'd also appreciate it if someone could tell me how to properly enable the Win XP Firewall. Anyways, here is my HiJack This scan that I just ran after restarting the computer:

Hello.

The attached logs are locked, meaning a password were set on them and therefore I cannot view it.

Anyhow, please run the following tool.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
Close any open windows, including this one.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boo... Read more

For months I've been having problems with programs not responding, responding slowly, or freezing. When I open Windows Task Manager and select end task, it doesn't work. I want to run scans in safe mode, but when I press F8 on restart, I can't get it. I could previously get to safe mode before all the problems started. The only way I can get out of a program not responding or freezing is to hit the off button, not through shut down/restart. I'm having to do this constantly now. I suspect the computer has a virus or problems with spyware/malware. Bitdefender quarantines lots of temp files, which I delete. Hitman Pro finds tracking cookies, which I delete. Malwarebytes never finds anything. I need help in determining what problem my computer has and how I can fix it.

Hello Everyone,

I have gotten excellent advice at this forum before. I am hoping you can help this time. I am trying to help my dad over the phone, which is proving to be very difficult. 2 days ago we removed a Trojan, but now there are new problems. I got him to run hijack this and send me his log file, which I will post here. The symptoms are (as best I can tell) he gets TONS of pop ups for "History Kill" and "Spyware Guard Browser Protection Alert". Also, he removed (or thought he removed) McAfee since he doesn't use it anymore, but is getting messages about that, too. He is unable to start in safe mode. Everything is extremely slow. I can't make heads nor tails of this mess, especially since I am 450 miles away and can't be there to do the work myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My wife's computer had a Trojan and other things that were messing it up. I thought I got them out but they seem to be back, or she got new ones that are similar. First one seemed to be from a program called "Protection Systems" that may have come from "My Web Search", which may have come with "Gamevance32". Protection Systems was trying to convince us we had many viruses and we should download their program (and pay to activate it) to clean these up. It used windows that looked remarkably like real Windows, but there was no mention of Microsoft or any copyright info at all. It also kept saying I had no AV software. Well, I used my Norton and Comcast Anti-Spyware, that I didn't have, to remove them. My Web Search was automatically blocking any attempt to change my default web search engine. Gamevance32 was making over 900K changes in my computer on each Startup (according to my Norton History). Something also disabled the Task Manager via Administrator, and also has disabled the Safe Mode Startup.
Things were good for several days, but last night a new set started. A program called "Personal Anti-Virus" also trying to get us to buy it so it could clean out stuff it said we had. It had installed itself in the C:/Programs/ directory without Windows knowing about it. And added itself to the Startup list in MSCONFIG. I disabled the Startup and rebooted. Then I was able to delete the program. However, my Norton keeps tell... Read more

This computer is now infected with Police Pro and nothing is allowed to work. None of the applications in the computer work except Police Pro, Internet Explorer, and Flock. All anti-virus, anti-spyware, downloaded fix programs (FindyKill) are blocked and will not run. Neither will the Run First stuff. No Regedit, no Msconfig, no Task Manager, no Safe Mode, etc.... So where can I go from here? I can download anything, but as soon as I click "Run", it is blocked. A window pops up from the toolbar saying this file is infected and cannot run. I am sending this from my computer. These seem to be popping up every three days.

I am able to boot up my computer and select either my wife's account (no password and reduced rights) or mine (I have admin rights and a password is required). I clearly got a virus the other week that has disabled my task manager as well as removed my start menu. When I log into my account I get a blank screen. I can not right click and C+A+Del "Has be disabled by administrator".

One other 'weird' item. When I normally start my computer I get two accounts, mine and my wifes. When I start in safe mode I get one called "Administrator" and one with my name (which has administrator rights), but I do not see one with my wife's name.

When I start in safe mode I get the exact same issue when I log into my account (i.e. No task manager, no right click, no start menu). I was able to get into the account called "Administrator" and I can run C+A+Del but no start menu and no right click.

I need a way to access files on my account so that I can transfer off some very important files. Is there a way to start your computer at the comand line only and find the file that contains the data I need to get off the computer? The data is in my account (i.e. The administrator account and I know the password). I can access C+A+Del under my wife's account and I can see all her files but I can not get to mine.

Ok I am currently using my brothers computer that he built by ordering piece by piece, so this may be diffictult to explain it, but the computer is running Windows XP
I managed to contract some virus of some sort. The first symptoms were pop ups of porntube.com, then the generic box of You have a virus download software now. I tried to get AVG to scan but it could not detect anything, and by the time it was done scanning the screen was filled with download antivirus screens, and porn pop ups.

So i restarted my computer, and tried to start it up in safe mode, but as soon as it loads all the drivers it forces a restart, I then tried to start safe mode with command prompt and network, but agian the same thing.

So I then tried to start the computer normally, this actually booted up into windows, I saw my desktop and a flash of the toolbar then everything dissapears but my background and nothing happens, when i try to reboot and hit ctrl alt dlt as soon as i see the desktop i get a message saying task manager is blocked by administrator. This is my home computer and there has never been an issue with task manager before.
The only other thing I can think to do is the Windows XP disk, and try something with that, unfortunetly it is currently misplaced and I think it might be in another city right now. Hi there, thanks to everyone who offers help on here to all us 'non-techies', if anyone is able to help me with my problem it will be much appreciated.

O.K..... where to start.... at the beginning I suppose.... it became obvious about a week ago that my computer (not this one) had a virus as I was being misdirected to different websites, so I decided to download some free Norton Anti-Virus. I then ran a scan but it was obvious that it hadn't installed properly, due to the virus on there no doubt. I then tried to visit numerous anti-virus websites but was blocked from all of them, so I accessed them from this computer, downloaded the anti-virus scanners to a USB stick and transferred them over to the infected computer.... some of them ran but found nothing, some of them didn't run at all, but the AVG one ran and found 4 viruses, but said that it couldn't heal / disinfect (I forget the exact term used!) them.... so I kept on trying other downloaded virus scanners in the hope that one of them would find and destroy whatever was causing the problem. Now here's the real problem.... I was about to try another virus scanner in safe mode but when I went to msconfig and selected safe mode with networking.... 'restart'.... my computerrestarted but will not allow me to get past the safe mode screen. I turn off and on, but all that comes up is the safe mode black screen with the cursor that can be moved. If i try Ctrl / ALt / Delete nothing happens.... if I try Ctrl / Shift / Esc (I s... Read more

Answer:Can't Boot in Safe Mode/Task Manager Blocked By Administrator

Welcome to Major Geeks!

More than likely you are going to need your Windows XP bootable CD to fix this. It may even be necessary to do a reinstall. And if you are short for time, a reinstall may be your best and fastest option at this point.

Can you boot up and log into a different user account?
What about the Adminstrator user account in safe boot mode?

If you cannot boot in any mode, there is nothing we can do for you in the Malware Forum and you would be better off working in the Software Forum to first get your PC bootable.

Hey guys,
I've been running through the web searching for an answer be it seems like I can't find it anywhere. I'm kinda desperate cause it's my Girlfriend's laptop and she has a lot of college works on it. So I'd like to avoid formatting it.

Here's the Computer.
Dell Inspiron 1501 (laptop)
Windows XP Pro. SP2
Using RadialPoint Anti-Virus.

Windows XP asked if I wanted to install SP3. I said yes. But It was taking forever. So I left the house leaving the PC on his own. I came back and it was powered off. I don't know why it closed as it was connected on the power supply and the battery doesn't work anymore anyway.

I reopened it, I see the Window's logon screen. But then, all I see is my mouse (which I can move), but nothing else. Caps, num, scroll-locks work. I don't see any icons or taskbar. when I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, I don't even access task manager to create a new task. Windows key+R doesn't work.

I tried in safe mode, it's the same (Except it is written safe mode on the blank screen). My wallpaper is usally a black screen with nothing on it. So I can't tell you if I really see a Black screen or if it's my wallpaper.

I tried using XP cd Recovery Console, it passes it after I choose C:\Windows\. I press exit, nothing changed. I tried using fixmbr and fixboot on the recovery console, nothing change either.

I don't mind formatting the pc, but I'd like to save some files before and I don't have an External Laptop HD drive. Is there any ways to ... Read more

Hi,

I got a virus yesterday off a dodgy website, in task manager it showed that i had 2 rundll programs open, note pad and a couple of internet explorer pages, i kept trying to close them but i couldn't.

Anyway i scanned using Avast and it said there was no virus etc but i restored my laptop to a couple of days ago.

Now i can't open task manager properly or install a MBAM and the screen is a bit dodgy as well, text boxes in internet dont open properly and text is a bit funny. I can't open these in safe mode either or system restore.

I couldn't even sign up to these forum on my laptop - i couldnt see what i was typing in the text box.

I've attached a screenshot of task manager and when i try to open the MBAM installer.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Programs not opening properly e.g Task Manager (even in safe mode)

Sounds like you're still infected, and that it got into your System Restore points. Confirm if this is the case by installing Malwarebytes in Safe Mode with Networking to update and run a full scan. If this fails download Windows Defender Offline, writing to flash stick or burning to CD, booting to update and run a full scan.

If infection is found confirming your Restore points are infected, turn off System Protection and run another full scan with Malwarebytes, then Avast full scan or Boot Scan if available. System Protection - Change Disk Space Usage

Google the actual virus to see if it requires special tools for removal. Our Security forum experts can consult.

Once it's confirmed removed, run SFC -SCANNOW Command to check System file integrity.

Serious infections can sometimes require a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 following or adapting these steps to get it perfect.

Furthermore I can't access such a file.
I tried using HJT and i have the log which i will leave at the end.
When i try to access task manager it says it has been disabled by the administrator. Same with Registry Editor. Also, When i try to access safe mode, I can't select safe mode or any other option and the timer just runs out and the computer starts up normally. Can anyone help me?

I am dealing with a computer, running Windows XP Pro SP3, infected with Internet Crime Complaint Center

I enter safe mode with networking, but the virus shows up there as well. If I try Ctrl-Alt-Del to access task manger the screen goes black and shows the logo for Windows XP Pro only.

I have tried Kaspersky boot disk, no such luck.

hi guys..

I have this problem for days now and it's really making me go crazy.
these are the symptoms:

- task manager and registry disabled.
- safe mode disabled. I can't get to safe mode. It always restarts whenever I do it.
- I noticed that every anti-virus and anti malware tool i use starts at first. but the next time you're gonna use it, it won't start anymore.. it says that the file is corrupt or system error, etc.

I do hope you could help me out with this because i don't wanna reformat my hard drive again.. T_T

oh and by the way, these are the tools i used during my attempt to cleanse my pc:
hijack this
Cure it
Combo fix
Trojan Remover
Process Explorer
fixdownadup.exe (symantec tool)
Anti Downadup (bitdefender tool)

None of it worked. Probably because I can't run get in to safe mode and run it there..

Oh, and by the way, i found a file here in a flash drive which is attached to this pc.. i opened up the autorun.inf in notepad and this is what i found:

[AutoRun]
;SfOnphibvqt NXpbX vwjt
;xKPxfAGc sIgHQVhEtwbeUoJG
Open =bjlyg.pif

shell\opEN\cOmmANd = bjlyg.pif
;
Shell\ExploRe\CoMmand = bjlyg.pif
shEll\AUTOPlay\COMmaND=bjlyg.pif

This is the worst virus i've encountered so far and any help would be very, very much appreciated. ^_^

Hello! Thanks for helping:
So I built my computer two years ago and it has been running strong ever since. I went to Vegas for three days and came back and it seems like this happened out of no where.
Windows boots up just fine, but then instead of a login screen, I get that black screen. I have googled it and most people are able to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and stuff like that; I cannot even do that.
I have tried running in safe mode, same deal. I have tried in low-resolution mode, same deal.
What is weird is that I can dual boot into Linux (I installed Ubuntu a while ago) just fine, in fact, I am posting through Linux on this very computer.
I have tried to use Windows 7's system repair that is through the computer, or whatever, no cigar. and my last restore point was in 2011, I would rather not resort to that.

Here are my system specs:
Motherboard: MB ASUS SABERTOOTH X58 LGA1366 R
Graphics Card: VGA GIGABYTE|GV-R685D5-1GD R
Power Supply: PSU CORSAIR|CMPSU-750TX 750W RT
CPU: CPU INTEL|CORE I7 950 3.06G 45N R
My Windows booted harddrive: SSD 64G|ADATA AS596TB-64GM-C R
All my other files+Linux boot harddrive: HD 1T|SAMSUNG HD103SJ 32M 7K %
Memory: MEM 2Gx3|PATRIOT PV736G1600ELK R

I remember doing an Avira Scan, and a Spybot Search and Destroy Scan like a week or two ago, but I swear I have rebooted since then, of course, so I do not think it is that.
I am worried that it is my graphics card, but then why would Linux work? Perhaps it is the graphics drivers, then? Is there a way I cou... Read more

You can download a legal copy with SP1 integrated from here:

Windows 7 Direct Download Links

Make sure you get the same version you have, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate and 32 or 64 bit. Note that Basic or Starter is not available.

I recommend using ImgBurn at 4X speed (or the slowest available) to create the DVD from the downloaded .iso file.

You can do this on any computer capable of burning a DVD.

YOU MUST HAVE A VALID KEY TO INSTALL THIS .ISO. The one on the COA sticker on your computer will work.

You can also create a bootable USB Flash drive (4GB or larger) to install Windows 7 from.
Download and run Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3
Select Windows 7 from the first drop down list, all the way to the bottom
Select the downloaded Windows 7 iso file
Select your USB flash drive
Click Create

For techies or folks who work on computers: Create Windows 7 Universal ISO With All Editions Selection On Install with ei.cfg Removal Utility.
This will fit on a 6GB flash drive or can be burned to a DVD.

OK, I screwed up. i have a bug. It wont let me into my drives, run option, task manager ,safe mode (although I did try a string I found on line in the "run" and it let me into task Mgr) But I cant get into ms config or regedit through "run". Happened after a download...had AVA.EXE in dos command for a split second and then all this happened.Just trying to accomplish a complete recovery as there really is nothing on this computer worth allot of effort if I can just dump it all and reinstall xp. Put in my xp disc but no good as it only says that I have an updated version already and it wont load. This computer did not have any virus protection and so I installed the norton that came with the computer(post problem, but outdated)...but "admin rights" wont allow full install..Its off line right now(still have control of that) keeps popping up a anti virus program that I did not install and runs itself until I stop it...wont go away either. As soon as I minimize it...a few minutes later its back up.When I try F8 when booting, it just stays black and wont run...pushing the on/off button shuts it down though. So if anyone can help me get into this turd, I'd appreciate it...the kids hate me right now as this was their gaming/homework/music computer...nothing that cannot be reinstalled I'm sure.

I'm using winxp and when I tried to go to task manager and msconfig I get the window for a sec. then nothing. What can I do to fix the problem. Thanks. Willie

Answer:no task manager or msconfig

Almost certainly a virus or malware.

Run online virus check

Then, download install and run SpyBot and allow it to remove what it finds.

Then, download, install and run HiJackThis

It creates a LOG file. Copy/paste the file back here for review.

I have been working on fixing a friends computer. I have run Spybot 1.3 and Adaware both with all current updates. I removed 2100+ items, rebooted, rescaned removed more. I am finally down to only a few items showing up in the scans occationally. I went to run msconfig to see what was running at start up. MSconfig appeared for 1/2 a second then disappeared. the same is true for taskmanager. There is no popup blockers or any thing. I have run Norton anti virus and found nothing. I ran trendmicro's anti-virus and spyware removal. Nothing.

found a few other forums that talked about a similar problem so i downloaded and ran hijackthis.

My computer has been running fine for about a year now, it's running Windows XP Home Edition. A few days ago I started having a problem where whenever the Task Manager shows up, it automatically closes after a few seconds. The same also happens with the MSconfig utility. This is what my Hijackthis log file looks like...

I do a control+alt+Del and slect task manager, it will appear for about a second then disappear, same happens with msconfig. I know this is a problem with a virus or something. I have run through all the step in prep to post my hijackthis log, i have used spybot, adaware and CW, I did a virus scan(eTrust), and done the malware, rogue and suspect programs. So If someone can check out my hijackthis Log and let me know where my problem is it is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:task manager regedit msconfig

Welcome to TSF Father!

Well, first off you need to give us a little more info than that. Please tell me exactly what happened. Second, as for the task manager, you can get a better one from here and maybe even use it to troubleshoot your problem:

I have been reading up on a few different posts to try and find out exactly how to fix what's going on with my computer. I cannot run msconfig from the run command, so i can't load in safe mode to run any programs. I also have popups from SearchMiracle and Popuppers Advertisement Window65. I have already dl'd and ran AdAware se 1.05, Spybot S&D, CWShredder, and Spyware Blaster. I use trendmicro online virus scan, and here is my HijackThis file.

So, l came here for help and got it, thanks to all of you guys. The name of the culprit file in my case was "SMINEVKUHR.EXE". After searching for this file (start menu) and deleting it, l could run task manager and msconfig. Then in mscofig, on the "startup" list, there it was, in big old capital letters, not once but twice. So l had to do this a couple of times before l could run either TM or config with no problems directly after a restart. l'm sure to all of you smart guys l'm doing it all wrong, and have probably missed something very important, but what the heck. if l can help another moron like myself, then yay. BTW l found the "sminevkuhr.exe" "b.s." by using the "process explorer" download that someone on another thread recommended. this is just like the task manager, how bout that. 0_o
Thank again all yous guys, alot.

Hi: I'm working on yet another friend's pc that has been hijacked. However, after running spybot search and destroy and ad-aware, I can no longer get msconfig to come up and display so I can see what is running at start up. It just does not appear. Neither will task manager run, it doesn't show up, what did I do? Ugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Hi guys,

My problem is somewhat complex so please bear with me. I had malware and adware on my laptop which was really annoying and I tried really hard to get rid of it. So I decided I was going to do a system restore. The system restore kept saying "System restore is initializing". I tried it three times and it didn't work. I looked around on the internet, and someone suggested to do the system restore while in safe mode. This is where I made my mistake. I set safe mode in msconfig.exe (not knowing you could go into safe mode while booting). msconfig forces the computer to boot into safe mode everytime, but my safe mode won't boot. I get a b;ack screen with a cursor. I have noticed that the cursor gets reset to the middle of the screen every five seconds or so. I also see the words safe mode flash in all four corners sometimes. I have tried re-installing windows 8.1 from a bootable usb, but whenever I change the boot priority, it doesn't seem to save my settings. Please tell me what my options are. Will replacing my hard drive do the trick. Thank you in advance.

Answer:I set safe mode in msconfig.exe and safe mode won't boot.

Can you restart and get into your log in screen ? If you can, enter safe mode by pressing the power button icon (lower right corner) then Shift + restart. That gets you to Advanced Settings where Safe Mode and, if that fails, Reset PC to orig settings. If you can't, try a hard reset by removing battery and all external usb attachments and then pressing and holding power button until it shuts down. Repeat a few more times to drain memory, then see if powering up will get you to log on screen.

A system restore in safe mode will just restore the malware. You need to boot into safe mode and run your anti-virus or malware program and have them quarantine and then remove them while in safe mode. Use Malwarebytes free or Adwcleaner or Hitman to clean the system. If that does the trick, manually create a system restore point that you know is clean after the system is to your satisfaction.

My computer has been a bit slower than normal and just now I got back to my desk to a message asking me which connection did I want to use to log to the internet, which was worrisome because after turning my computer on earlier I hadn't attempted to connect to the internet, so that message shouldn't have come up. So I check and notice that my Task List Manager has a huge number of processes and I tried to do some research on some of them but got lost in all the "valid windows process" vs. "it's a Trojan, delete it." I used Hijack This to pull up everything running on my computer and below is what I got. I'd really, really appreciate someone looking through the list to point out any possible red flags. Lots of thanks in advance for any help.

Since then I have not been able to access my task manager to close some tasks because the computer itself has been running slower. Also I have had sporatic loss of connection to the internet, which is not happening to my wifes laptop.

I had no idea where to start to fix my problem, but last night my friend linked me to this forum. After a night of trying to fix my problem based off other threads, it's still messed up. I didn't see anyone else have a problem with msconfig35.exe, I think I'm missing a key file to remove because I tried just about everything.

Answer:Another task manager, msconfig, regedit problem.

Kyle, there were a few items that need to be taken care of. First run Hijack this again and scan. Then check the below items then click Fix checked.

C:\windows\System32\MSCONFIG35.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] MSCONFIG35.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: webdav.exe

Just a question, did you have 2 instances of Internet Explorer running at the time you did this scan? I was surprised to see it twice. Especially since one was all lower case letters and the other all upper. Anywho, I digress...after you fix those items, reboot into safe mode (F8) and delete MSCONFIG35.EXE and search for and delete webdav.exe. Then restart you system normally and download Spybot. Run the program then in the settings tab go into online and download the updates (if any). Once that's done run the program. Anything that it finds will have a check next to it, hit the fix checked items button and then you should be clean of spyware.

Answer:task manager and msconfig close automatically

Ok first of all, i try to open 'msconfig' the normal way under 'run...', but now it doesnt open any more when i try to get to it. I want to change some of my startup options but now nothing happens when i try to get to that window.

A semi-similar problem happens when i try to bring up task manager with 'control-alt-delete' except that the window flashes on the screen for a split second, then disappears. A task manager icon appears on the bottom right tray but disappears when i mouse over it. I made a new shortcut to task manager that i pinned to my start menu which brings up the task manager window. This works and the window does not go away; it stays on the screen normally and everything is a-ok. now i'm wondering how i can get the normal 'control-alt-delete' method to work again, or if there is a way i can make 'control-alt-delete' a shortcut to the new task manager shortcut that works.

So theres two problems i have here that may or may not be related.

Answer:having some problems with windows like msconfig and task manager

Hi masterxplodr and welcome to TSF !

Do you have the XP install disk ? If so, go to start => run and type "sfc /scannow" (whithout the quotes and with the space). This will run the system file checker utility which will repair any missing or corrupt system files you could have. It's likely to ask for the XP CD during the scan.

It seems alot of people are having this problem, my taskmanager/regedit/msconfig won't stay open for more than a second. I've tried reading the different threads but I cannot fix it, most of the files that people said to delete are not even on my system. I'm not very good with virus's, so here is my HijackThis log, what should I delete to fix this? Also, should I get rid of svchost.exe, wasen't that part of the RPC virus?

Answer:Can't get Task manager or MSconfig to stay open.

You need to download a good Spyware and Trojan Removal program.

Spybot Search and Destroy:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsda

SpySweeper:
http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/spysweeper/index.php
This will also protect your home page from being hijacked.

Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/

With any of the above three programs, just like with Anti-Virus software, should have the latest updates installed before doing a scan.

CWShredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

KazaaBeGone
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/kazaabegone.zip

Programs that can help prevent getting infected:

Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Spyware Guard
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

You also might want to run a virus scan as well.

ok i'm sure you've all seen the problem where task manager opens up then closes really fast. yes it could be a worm and all that, tried to remove the worm and all but it wasn't that. here's what i think it is. in my registry there's a thing running called LBZSFQHAKJ.EXE you try to rename it back to msconfig.exe and it just changes back. you can delete it, end the process through taskmanager.com (ug!) but it will just reload upon a reboot. how do i get rid of this stupid thing?! also now that i deleted it one time when i reboot i get like a windows error message that says "hole has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." how do i fix this as well? any help is appreciated! thank you!

Welcome to TSG!

I have split your post off into your own thread. In the future if you have a Question/Problem please start a "New Thread". It get's too confusing trying to address two different people's problem in the same thread and you may get overlooked.

Hi All!,
It appears that I have been infected with something that keeps me from accessing the above mentioned programs, they pop up for a second and then dissappear.
I have Norton 2005 running and a firewall for my DSL connection and I am very carefull about scanning anything I download and my virus definitions are updated every other day. But it seems something has slipped in.
I have run every online scan you can think of and run Norton under Safe Mode too. I am posting my HiJack this log in the hopes that I can get some help here. Thanks in advance for anyhelp yu can give. By the way, is there a tutorial for HiJack this so I can understand just what it is showing me? Thanks again.

Hello. I posted this in the operating systems forum, and somebody there suggested I post it here.

I have just recently upgraded from Windows 98 to XP, and since then I have been having loads of trouble. I am getting several errors when windows starts up. I am fairly certain I have several viruses. Also, when I try to use msconfig, regedit or the task manager, they close immediately after I try to open it. I can't even access them in safe mode. I have read several other threads of people who have had the same problem. The way I see it, my computer is a mess. I figure I will tackle these problems one at a time, so I will start with the msconfig/regedit/taskmanager problem first. Here is my Hijack this log.

Answer:Can't launch Task Manager, regedit and msconfig!

Please don't post your Hijack This logs here, if you feel you are infected please post over at the Virus and Malware area of this Forum.
Are you logged on as an Administrator user? or a limited user? I see you have Websense installed on your system. Are there restrictions through Websense that are limiting your access to those programs? Try disabling Websense and see if that helps.

My Task manager, Msconfig, Regedit, wont load, and if they do its for a split second then they close. Im not sure why. I dont think it would be viruses, but i dont have any. Can anyone think of why? And if so how to fix that.
Thanks.

Answer:task manager,msconfig wont load

These symptoms have been linked to trojan behaviour.

If you can still nav the 'net, here's what you should do, to eliminate that possibility:

If you haven't already, download, install, update immediately, then run AdawareSE. Make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results.

Then download, install, update immediately Spybot S&D.

Have each fix whatever problems they may find.

Next, run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or RAV Antivirus.
Please select the autoclean option when using Trend Micro.

Then get HijackThis . This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Run the scan, save the log, but do not fix anything yet. Many files it finds are harmless, and required for your system to operate.

Post your log in a new thread in the HijackThis Log Help forum. This our dedicated spyware/virus forum. One of the expert analysts there will look over your log and assist you. Please include a brief description of the problem you are having and what you have done to fix it so far.

Ack! I've been searching your forums for help, and found my problem described most efficiently in this resolved thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/t153432/s.html

Basically its a story I'm sure you've heard before: launch Task Manager, regedit, msconfig and they pop up for a second, then disappear. From what I understood (which wasn't much, truth be told) the problem seemed to originate from something referred to as: WUAUMQR.EXE

However, I find no instances of this on my computer (I searched with the search tool on start menu, and I also looked manually in my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder).

I also see a reference to something about Run Once and Winsock 2 driver not being a valid name; I can access my startup menu through Spybot (though I don't really know how to do much else with it) and it lists the following:

Key: HK_CU:RunOnce
Value: Winsock 2 Driver
Filename:Explorer.exe

AS WELL AS

Key: HK_LM:Run
Value: Winsock 2 Driver
Filename: Explorer.exe
I don't know how to Scan my computer like Fivekonz did in the aforementioned thread, sorry.

Please help

Hello everyone. Today I noticed that my task manager wouldn't work. I tried to open it, it opens for about 2 seconds then closes. I then tried regedit, same thing, so then I tried msconfig..same thing. I did some looking around and apparently it's a virus. Good ol' AVG letting things in. So I did a full scan with it, and then with MicroTrends HouseCall, and CWShredder. All came up clean. But I know there's a virus from the research I did. Hello guys, this is my first post here. I have problem last few days. It could be some sort of malware or virus which cant be detected with AVG antivirus or Ad aware. This lap top hasnt been connected online for quite a while and problems started after used my USB flash disk. After that i couldnt open Task Manager(neighter with right click on task bar - text faded, nor with ctrl-alt-delete) or regedit. Also i cant boot into safe mode (when it starts, suddenly blue screen appears for a milisecond and computer restarts). I cant start AVG system scan, it reports that "application cannot run due to an error while verifying its electronic certificate". I can run AVG guard though. There was problem with C disk (i couldnt open it with double click and i had to use "explore" ). I resolved it by deleting "autorun.ini" file thru command prompt (it was hidden file and, another problem that occured, i cant edit folder options to make hidden files visible). There is also problem with language bar which is disabled and cannot be re-enabled cause its button is faded, though i dont care much about it.

I manage to enter to Task manager and regedit using trick with gpedit.msc. In "User configuration/Administrative templates/System/Ctrl+Alt+Del options/Remove task manager", default value is"not configured". I put disabled and i can use Task manager OR regedit again, but ONLY once! After i open and close ONE of those, i cant re-open it withou... Read more

It sounds very much like a virus. If you can get on the internet google regtools.vbs that script file should get your regedit working again but don't know for how long if it is a virus.

I'm having a couple problems and I think they are all probably related but I dont know how to fix them. First, TaskManager doesnt work. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, the windows comes up and then disappears as so as it comes up. My second problem is that when I try to run msconfig from the Run window, it pops up and disappears just like the TaskManager window. Lastly, when i try to run regedit from the Run window, nothing happens. I'm guessing that these problems are all related? Is something corrupted on my system? Im running XP Home SP1. My virus definitions are all up to date and I ran a virus scan with Norton Antivirus 2005 and Panda ActiveScan online, but neither found anything. spybot and adaware scans both came up clean. I also ran a Symantec search for the w32.Klez worm and the W32.Yaha worm, both came up negative. Does anyone know what might be wrong? I ran HijackThis and I couldn't find anything that appeared out of the ordinary. I've listed my drives and my computer specs below. Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks a lot.

System:
P4 1.5 GHz
640 Mb RAM (128 and 512)
Western Digital Caviar 120 GB
Windows XP Service Pack 1
if any other specs are needed, just tell me.

Answer:Task Manager, Regedit, MSConfig wont work

Try booting from your Windows XP disk and try doing a repair. If that doesn't work, boot up Windows and backup any data you don't want to lose and then format your hard drive.

I have a similar post like this, but it seems that the data I relayed was wrong. My computer has been gradually slowing down the past few weeks. The Task manager refuses to show itself (as well as regedit and MSconfig--if it does, it merely shows itself for .5 seconds). I've scanned the whole computer, and repaired every trojan that has infected it. Yet again, it refuses to heal my PC. (AVG is being such a big pain right now. It doesn't even want to scan my PC properly).

Ok, as the topic shows you, i'm having Task manager, Regedit and Msconfig Problems. When ever I try to open them, they close quickly. I know this is a virus problem, I tried downloading Hijack This, but my Mcafee detected a virus so I need as much help as I can to find it.I tried to download Hijack This, but Mcafee detected a virus within it and keeps terminating the download. I managed to get the Task manager to stay up by copying Taskmgr.exe to my desktop, and renaming it MGRTASK.exe. Answer:Task Manager/Msconfig/Regedit Closes quickly

You need to update your definitions for McAfee or disable it if you cannot update. HijackThis does not have a virus in it. It is a bug in McAfee. This also means your definitions are way out of date.

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus RemovalMake sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

Hello all,

Just recently I noticed that my Task Manager, Regedit, Msconfig and possibly more weren't opening or working. I've tried the taskbar, alt ctrl delete and nothing. So I did a scan on my computer with AVG Free, nothing. Windows Defender, nothing. Tried a startup repair in Windows, nothing. Something I did however, now makes the window popup than disappear. I was going to try doing a disk check tonight when I get home, but I want to see if there are any other suggestions before I do that.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry this is for Windows 7 64-bit.

Hello, and thanks in advance for any assistance you might be able to offer. I am new here, but I have read several of the threads posted here and it looks like a great place to get some help.

I figure I will tackle these problems one at a time, so I will start with the msconfig/regedit/taskmanager problem first. Here is my Hijack this log.

Hi Guys

I have a laptop LENOVO T61p with Windows XP PRO SP2 on it. I have recently added some software on it but I guess one of those applications I've added has infected the machine with a trojan or malware: Every time I try to access the task manager, msconfig, regedit or the command prompt, the window lasts only 1 or 2 seconds then closes. I tried several programs to get rid of it but did not succeed (AVG anti-spyware in safe made seemed to get rid of 116 agents but when I restarted the machine, the problem is still there).

I have followed the steps given to me by KENNY94, one of the senior members, on a previous problem I had with the same machine and I have the logs with me here, in case these are needed again.

First, I have run the HiJACKThis and save the log for you guys, hoping that will shed a light on why it's happening (this log is before I run AVG antispyware):

Hi There,

There is a virus that has disguised itself as an Anti Virus program on my computer. It has changed my wallpaper to an error message, several popups keep coming up that appear as an anti virus scan, and is open on my right hand tray saying that my computer is infected and I need to run the anti virus. I tried Ctrl + Alt + Delete and this program closes it saying that its infected. I tried msconfig from run and this application wont run. I have tried add/remove and it wont let me open this either saying its infected. In fact I cant open any application and it wants me to click through and install this 'anti virus'

What options do you think I might have to close this progra, which will give me the opportunity to remove it?

Also, there was a similar virus that got on my CPU the other day called 'XP Deluxe' -- I was able to delete that, but this virus 'System Security' has completely taken over, but they might be related

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ~Kyle

I can not open the teak manager, MS Config or use System restore. They all open for an instant and automatically close.

I had the Caseyvideo virus or whatever it is. I saw it running in the task manager. I tried to go into safe mode and then stop the process in the set up of MS config... didn't work.

Also, won't let me open system restore. Can access it through safe mode but it keeps failing.

PLEASE HELP!!!

I can't post the hijack log because It won't work, I can run it in safe mode (not sure if it's the same and in regular).

I've been through the forum searching for simialr post but non of the other sollutions worked for me.
