Preferred Solution: Nothing happened after executing .exe file?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Nothing happened after executing .exe file?

When you download and install pirated files, you can expect your computer to get infected.

Read the forum rules. This forum doesn't assist with pirated and illegal downloads.

I'm running Windows XP Home and I need to run my DOS development system for MS Fortran 5.1 that ran fine on my Windows 98SE system. I copied the Win98 files to locations in the WinXP system that made the file paths the same as the Win98 paths, and copied the old desktop shortcut PIF to my Windows XP desktop. The PIF specifies a .bat file that sets paths and environment variables. Executing the shortcut caused the fortran system to run, but the batch file apparantly did not.

Trying to better define the problem, I wrote a small file c:\Temp\zzz.bat that uses the echo statement to generate a beep, a 1-line message, and ends with the pause statement. I made a new desktop shortcut to a small DOS file manager programlist.com, then modified the PIF: on the Program tab, in the Batch file window, I entered "c:\Temp\zzz.bat" and made no other changes. The shortcut caused list.com to run fine, but no beep, no message, no pause: apparantly zzz.bat was not being executed.

So why does the batch file not execute????

Answer:PIF batch file not executing.

Hi, and welcome to TSF.
I'm not very familiar with this, but here goes....
Dos support was fairly native in 98, but not so in XP. In order to run DOS based applications requiring the DOS command set, and subsequently have dos applications called to run, you should try this within a command shell. Try opening a shell first, click the "start" button, select run, and type "command". Then start the application in the shell.

i'm learning javascript, and i want to make a script that will execute on logon and greet me, but i don't know how to make a file execute at startup, or wether i can put a .js file on the startup list.

can .js files be executed on startup in windows xp?
if so, how?

Answer:executing a .js file on startup?

nvm

i actually figured out how to make a .js file execute on startup by putting it in the startup file under 'all programs' (duh). i didnt want to make an html page tho because i dont want a window opening, just the pop-up greeting. now i'm having problems with my coding. it's wanting me to define the object, and i dont know how. i was using the document object and idk if thats even the right one. i'll make a new post under the programs section. thatnks!

I bought my husband a laptop to start learning how to surf the net and it was downloaded with Vista Home Ed. I am trying to download MS Office 2003 and an error comes up stating "The requested operation requires elevation." Now, I have downloaded MS Streets and Trips and it worked without a problem. Can anyone help me get MS Office loaded on this laptop. I don't know how to continue. Thanks so much!

msiexec continues to execute with each startup looking for some file (does not inform  what file), and displays annoying popups and at times overlays current window.  In addition, when I attempt to install software, it tells me that windows installer is already running and it must finish prior to the requested install.

I modified the configuration to no execute windows installer on startup but then if I attempt to do a software installation, it tells me the service is not running.

I re-registered wsiexec.exe and also removed it and downloaded a new copy and installed it.

Still same problem

Any ideas??

Hi

What security applications do you have installed as I remember an issue like this on a PC with a 3rd party firewall installed and a rule causing this, weird as it seems you'd wonder why the firewall would cause this. As you have had this issue for 2 mounths what was it you installed if anything around that time?

Have you scanned for malware?

If you right click one of those .exe's and choose properties and is Unblock on the general tab? if so try that.

If you uninstall your 3rd party software firewall and then reboot and try is this happing still?

I have a Lenovo Yoga 3 ultrabook. I have made a bootable Windows 8.1 USB flash drive. I would like to know what is the difference between an installation from the 'setup.exe' file in the USB drive's folder, & a regular clean boot from the flash drive? Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:Difference between clean USB boot & executing setup.exe file?

Booting the computer with USB or DVD install media will perform a so called clean install. You have to then reinstall all your software, Windows will be as if it was first time ever you have started that PC, new and fresh. If the computer already contained an older Windows installation, its files will be moved to folder Windows.old, you can then copy your personal files and folders from there to your new user folders.

Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums
Starting the setup from existing installation by launching the setup.exe from USB or DVD install media performs an in-place upgrade installation. All your installed software will be kept, as well as your personal files, and Windows will be upgraded.

Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums
When the version of Windows on USB / DVD is the same you have already installed and installation is started by launching setup.exe from USB / DVD, it's called a repair installation which is used to fix various Windows issues; all your data and software will remain intact but Windows system files will be overwritten.

I have a situation where when I open Excel by double-clicking on a file, a new instance of Excel is opened. I am currently running Excel 2007. When I do this, my PMW does not open with that file.

My work-around is to open Excel from the start menu (where the PMW does open) and then drag/drop file onto the program. It also works to open file using the open file menu in Excel, but this takes a bit longer when accessing files on the network. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi!

i've carelessly executed .vbs file and today I noticed that secure internet connection doesn't work in firefox and dropbox. Also, steam exhibited some difficulties in logging in (but that could be just steam). Chrome is working normally.

Other symptoms are that windows firewall and windows defender are turned off when I start the computer. I can turn the firewall on, but defender is blocked by group rule (I managed to override this by deleting the registry key). I ran windows defender but it didn't find anything. There was also an error while trying to install optional windows update.

Here is some info that seems related to my case: http://www.malware-traffic-analysis.net/2016/07/25/index4.html

Just like in this example, malware was in .vbs file and I have SYS>mycomputername<.exe showing in task manager. If I shut down this process I'm unable to access internet anymore (something about proxy not being set up properly).

This exe runs from this folder: c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Java

Contents of it are:

<mycomputername>.zip
<mycomputername>X.xml
Ionic.Zip.Reduced.dll
makecert.exe
SYS<mycomputername>.exe

I have a U300 PSU3DA which I changed from Vista to XP.
This is because my main use of the computer will be for navigation (boat) and I was told most navigation programs will run better with XP. I have hardly nothing on my laptop so far, and already the system seems to be slow and freezing too often.

My question now is about the program C-Maps which I've just installed and which won't open. It keeps saying "Eorror: cannot open attribute file".

What does that mean? I have desinstall and reinstall the program, and it keeps coming up with this message.
I had a look around the device manager and the only thing that seems wrong is the PCI memory controller.
I did a bit of a search on this and it seems that this driver is not necessary for XP? Is that so?

Could it be a cause of the C-Maps program not working?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite U300 PSU3DA: error: cannot open attribute file executing C-Maps

> I did a bit of a search on this and it seems that this driver is not necessary for XP? Is that so?
Where did you read this info?
I don?t know if the driver is necessary but you get all drivers on the Toshiba website.

For your problem with C-Maps, I think the best is you contact the C-Maps support. Here it is a forum for Toshiba laptops.

I'm currently using an applet to run a jar file named Loader.jar to run another jar file named ERO.jar, which is obfuscated. The loader loads fine, but it does not pop out the GUI as it's supposed to. Here's the HTML part of the loading:
Code:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Client</TITLE>
<META HTTP-EQUIV="PRAGMA" CONTENT="NO-CACHE">
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<CENTER>
<APPLET NAME = "Client" WIDTH = "500" HEIGHT = "85" ARCHIVE = "Loader.jar" CODE = "loader.class">
<PARAM NAME = "java_arguments" value = "-Xmx1024M">
</APPLET>
</CENTER>
</BODY>
</HTML>

When I normally run the ERO jar file, by using a batch file or double clicking it, it pops up a GUI I made to log in to a server. Although, when I run the HTML file to load the Loader.jar file, it runs as it should for the most part, but it won't pop up the GUI as it should. Here's a pic of it at the moment:

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9121/applet.png

It just stops there, but it won't pop up the GUI. The GUI looks like this:

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/2332/loginei.png

When just by running a jar file normally, it works. But when running a jar file to run another one, it won't.

I would like to sort these by file type so that I can save them to a CD.

What am I doing wrong here?

Answer:I can't sort by File Types. What happened to File Details?

I attached a word doc with two pics in it. I have no idea wht these [IMG] links are.
I hit the paperclip, added my file from my C: drive, hit Upload, and got this.

Essentially, I created a new folder, put in some music files, and wanted to sort them by file type, but I have no option for that. I can only sort by List, Details, Tiles and Content.

Under Windows XP, I COULD sort using View/Details.

Story:
I was editing a picture at the time and I needed a render of a hexagon. So i searched "Hexagon" in Google, found one I liked, and "right click on image -> Save image as -> Save" Like I normally do. This file was a bit different though, It was a ".SVG" which is my first time encountering it. I looked it up on google, and google said it was an 2d image file, so I figured i should try to open it in Photoshop. However, right after I tried, my Photoshop crashed. I was like. "No big deal, I'll just reopen Photoshop." But then it kept crashing. I deleted the image file and then went to save my after effects composition. Surprisingly After effects crashed too, and kept crashing after I tried to reopen it. Shortly after, I got an error that said "Windows explorer stop functioning, would you like to reload?" and that kept popping up. I decided to do a scan with Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes didnt find anything except some "PUP" stuff. I restarted my computer and everything seems to be working fine now.

Question: Is the image file below a virus or was it just my computer going funky and I have nothing to worry about?Google Image File:This is the picture I downloaded and tried opening in photoshop. OK, so I've been having trouble with IE reaching ANY of the MS SUPPORT sites for a couple of days. Every OTHER favorite (lots!) I have loaded in a jiffy, but MSKB, WU, MS Support, XP Support, and XP Downloads all gave me nothing but that stupid, uninformative "Cannot find server" message in the title bar, and the "This page cannot be displayed" nonsense in the main window. Two days. Deleted Index.dat. Updated the hosts file to latest DNS numbers. Checked (and reset) all of my Internet Options settings. Rebooted. Rebooted. Fiddled. Pharted around.

Nada. No MS crucial sites: THE ONLY ONES I USE IE FOR wouldn't open. Imported my Firebird bookmarks. ALL worked. Only MS criticals didn't. MS ClearType fine, MS eBooks fine, MS Word MVP fine. No IMPORTANT MS sites at all, though.

Old computer got ALL crucial MS sites fast in the same period. It's on the same cable, same modem, same router. Same settings so far's I can tell. Can't be DNS, can't be cable, can't be IE, can't be, can't be, can't be ...

Finally, in desperation, I deleted my hosts file.

BINGO! All MS sites load in a tick.

Anybody have any hypothetical or real or good-guesswork explanation for why this happened to this machine and didn't happen on the other machine this one is connected to?

The problem is solved (for now, anyway). I'm just really interested in figuring out why the problem arose. Any ideas considered. No re... Read more

I used File Manager quite a bit to search for files and to manipulate suffixes etc. It was a very handy tool. Now they have this sorry excuse called Windows Explorer. That help icon they have doesn't really give much help, unless one is totally ignorant of computer systems.

Answer:What happened to File Manager in XP ?

Microsoft has not used File manager since Windows 3.11 (I Think).

You could get it to work with 95 or 98 if you still have the file on your PC. Im not sure about XP. You could probably run it if know where it is. GoodLuck

Hu guys,

I need help on this topic. I have never realised my current winXP has problems opening .bat file. When I click on such file, all it shows was a new window (something that look like DOS window) but as soon as it opens, it closes fast too. In effect, nothing is being run or activated (if that the correct words to use). I have downloaded some programs that required .bat file and because of this I can't run them.

Is there anything wrong with my system? It is currently Windows Xp home edition version 2002, SP2.

Here's my situation: in one specific folder, I have stored about 4,000 NDS games, which all begin with a number, e.g. "4130 Puzzle Kingdoms (EU)(M5).nds". In XP, I was able to search for mulitiple files by entering this kind of search string: 0021, 0301, 1231, 4130 etc. All files beginning with the string between commas was then selected. In Win7, this doesn't seem to be possble anymore. Can anybody help, or maybe suggest an alternative search program?

Answer:What happened to XP's multiple file search

Let me first say that I highly doubt you own all those games. Don't pirate, or at least don't post here either indirectly or directly hinting towards piracy.

Hello all. I seem to have done something that has knocked out my Start Search (or was it start find) function. when I click on start search, I get a kind of disabled Internet Explorer box instead of the familiar search options with the usual buttons for location, file name, etc. This seems to have happened shortly after I got rid of the animated character and did a lot of other XP performance tweaks. I did turn the indexing service off but turned it back on and that did not help. Any help would be appreciated. I only now realize how essential that file search function is. Thanks in advance for any help.

Well here goes.. On Sunday October 2nd between 2-3 pmI was typing in notepad and my computer rebooted itself with no interaction on my part and I got the following message:

Windows cannot find the following file or directory:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CONFIG

I'm not sure if that the exact msg because I can't remember, but I know the final directory was CONFIG.

Today on Sunday, October 30th the same thing happened while playing a game in full screen mode with the SAME error msg as before, again I used another HDD so I'm not sure of the exact name.
After this happened the first time I tried to reformat the HDD by running a full windows reinstall, it gave me the error msg: Cannot copy OEM files, so I had to use a different HDD, and reformat the other one with an external enclosure before I could use it again.. After this happened the second time I popped in the hdd I used to replace the first one that got screwed and the CONFIG directory was present with some files in it, though I'm not sure if all of them were...
My question is how the hell could this have happened again, on the same day and around the same time approx 4 weeks later?
I'm running:
Winxp sp2 with all the latest updates
Linksys wired router

If you need hardware specs please let me know, I really think that someone might have done something to my computer, but then again I don't really know for sure.

So sometime randomly during the night, my computer restarted itself due to like finish installing some Windows updates, then I awake to find my computer in the setup recovery screen! This is not the first time this has happened! This EXACT same problem occurred about 2-3 days ago, so what I do is I check to see what the setup repair had found and apparently A file called " D:\ci.dll " is a critical boot file & it's corrupt, and now I don't know what to do!? I don't have ANY restore points, no recovery disc, and have no idea what to do which is why I came here. Should I get the file from the same version of Windows 7 from a different computer I have & replace it using Linux booting off a CD? Or what would be the best solution? Because last time, the same file was corrupt, and I did a system restore, btw, if it helps, I have an Acer, 6Gb of Ram, Windows 7 64Bit, 3.2Ghz AMD processor, AMD Radon 6570.
Thanks for ANY Answers

yeah the file ci.dll is the base code integrity module.

you can try this for the moment to see if it settles the problem with a windows file.

I'm doing some maintenance on a friend's machine and noticed that there is no mini-icon (from Notepad) for TXT files:

When I investigated to see what the current associated program and icon was so that I could change it, I noticed that it looks fine, and Notepad is correctly associated with TXT:

And Notepad itself has the correct icon and is the associated default program for TXT files:

So what caused the disappearance of the Notepad mini-icon for TXT files, and how do I get it back? I have tried doing the usual "rebuild icon cache" process but that didn't help.

Answer:What happened to "file" tab in Properties for TXT file??

Greetings,

I checked one of my email accounts and found a message from myself, titled "COOL" with the following in the body:

"Hi guys,

This from an email account I rarely use to send messages from. I went to that email address and found "I" had sent numerous others in my address book the same message. Oddly enough I have 4 "Delivery Status Notification (Failure)&#8207;" messages but only two show up in sent messages folder. At the same time some but not all of my other email accounts have received the message, again none of these appear in the sent messages folder of the offending email account.

Hi Experts,

My winxp machine has strange problem. On login, it shows "Executing: C:\Windows\System32\wlnotify.dll..." This is very strange I suspect it is a spy or virus, could anyone give me some suggestion to nail it down?

More information about the situation:

1) this is a virtual machine (so that I can get the screenshot of login
2) My version is Chinese, so you see square box which means "Executing..."
3) This problem start to appear after I uninstall "Vista Transformation Pack", yesterday I reinstall it because I thought is it possible that uninstall VTP has left something in system that caused this? So interface you see looks like Vista login, but actually it is XP.

Thank you very much!

Question: Executing a macro

I need your expertise help once again. John Walkenback created a macro that does the same thing as a hyperlink (I call it the hyperlink macro)? The reason for using this macro was that the hyperlinks did not work properly on shared drives. The macro that John provided works great. I began to create buttons for the hyperlink macro. I created 100 buttons to find the 100 files. They all worked great.

When I copy sheet1 into sheet2 (I created a macro with your help that deletes all the buttons that I created in sheet1) and delete certain rows that I do not want any more, I copy the rows that I want to work with back to sheet1. The reason why I copy sheet2 back to sheet1 is complicated to explain but it is a necessity. Now all the buttons that I created for the hyperlinks in sheet1 are not where I want them to be. They are all over the place and on top of each other. I tried all the three options on the format properties of the buttons, but none of them work properly. So I deleted all the buttons on sheet1.

Next, I tried these Macros (see bottom of this page). I used the Ctrl+e to execute all of the 100 macros. Guess what?? The same workbook comes up for all of them. If you look at the 2 macros that I created, you would think that they would work, since I used an If statement condition. Both are executed with a Ctrl+e. But the same file keeps on coming up no matter what cell I select.

I cannot use all the letters of the alphabet to execute the macros for a
number of reasons. On... Read more

Answer:Executing a macro

Hello

Not sure I fully understand but perhaps a Select Case might be more appropriate?

Code:

Sub HyperlinkMacro()
Select Case ActiveCell
Case "Alliance Homes/Kelly's Landing/Barrie": Application.Run "HLinkAllianceHomesKellysLandingBarrie"
Case "Aspenridge Homes/Thornhill Woods Ph.4/Thornhill": Application.Run "HLinkAspenridgeHomesThornHillWoodsPh4Thornhill"
Case Else
MsgBox "Nothing was found"
End Select
End Sub
First couple started for you to give you an idea. I've also added a message box in case of errors but you can change that to suit.

Running NT 4.0, IIS 4, SP6a.

When visitor attempts to execute an .asp file, the browser returns Error 500, Internal Server Error.

Directory has 'execute' priv.

Internet guest user acct has full access.

Simple test page is straight html, with NO asp variables, etc. Browser still returns server 500 error.

Several domains set up on the IIS server. I have a directory at "c:\webserver", under which I have a subdiretcories set up. Each sub is the "home" directory for a corresponding domain.

So, in IIS "c:\webserver\domainx" is the "home" directory for domainx.com. This directory is identified as a local path, not a virtual directory.

If the test file is renamed to blah.html from blah.asp, it works fine.

Any help greatly appreciated, this has been dragging on for months...

Answer:.ASP files not executing

I had this problem, and the only thing that worked was to do this: On the web site directory (and any other directories that this might also access), get properties, select the Home Directory tab, and set the Application Protection setting to Low (IIS Process). If this is an outside server, this wouldn't be a very good idea, but if it's just an intranet, go for it. Prior to doing this, I had all rights set up good to go, and it refused to cooperate. If nothing else, try this and see if it clears up.

Chris.

I have several control panel items that do not open. I get a message indicating that they are looking for an associated program.

After some research I figured out how to create a shortcut that opens the control panel item (example:firewall.cpl) by using its canonical name, and its GUID. Example I created a shortcut for default items using "C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{17cd9488-1228-4b2f-88ce-4298e93e0966}" as the target.

However, I really would like the control panel to work properly. I don't know how to move the shortcuts I have created for the *.cpl files that no longer work into control panel. Alternatively, I would like to know if there is a way I can automatically "refresh" my system (without having to reinstall Win 8) so the control panel items work properly.

Thanks.

When attempting to execute malware on a High Sierra Mac, I receive the following message:

I have not been able to find a way to override this protection and would like to execute the sample.

Answer:Executing Malware on Mac

The malware is being blocked from executing by an OS X security feature named "Gatekeeper". Gatekeeper was introduced in OS X 10.9.

You can disable Gatekeeper from within System Preferences.
1. Go to System Preferences
2. Select Security & Privacy
3. Unlock with authentication to change the security settings
4. Switch the configuration for "Allow applications downloaded from" to 'Anywhere'
5. Re-lock the settings

You're responsible for your own environment so make sure this environment is not your genuine Host environment, and by executing the malware sample you're trying to experiment with the documents on the environment will become encrypted. The sample you're trying to experiment with is known for masking itself as an Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Office hack-tool (aka. "crack") and is going through torrent websites, and will encrypt the documents on the environment when you open it up and attempt to work the fake hack-tool with it's UI.

hey --

I'm trying to get VB to execute a dynamic command the way WIndows would as if you used the Run box in the Start Menu. Specifically, I am using an "aim:blah blah" command, and my current method

Code:
Shell("c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe aim:goim?screenname=" & txtSN & "&message=" & strMessage, vbNormalFocus)
is extremely slow and ineffient. I did a quick scan of MSDN, but didnt find anything that helped. Does anyone know of a way I can acheive what I'm trying to do?

Thanks,
asbo

Quote:

C:\>tshark -r /log/sniff.pcap -n -R (wlan.sa==00:12:4a:74:d3:81) -w /log/temp.pcap

** (tshark.exe:3320): WARNING **: C:\Documents and Settings\svt\Application Data\Wireshark\preferences line 130: No such preference "column.hidden" (applying your preferences once

The same command when I issue from rsh, I get nothing. Looks like

Please tell if there is any other way of issuing the command through rsh.

Was given an older ACER PC for grandsons.  Was told it was reformatted to remove drive contents (but know little else and can't contact givers).Problem:-Not executing startup disk -Only screen at startup is ACER bios v2.0, good memory check (48Kb Memory, 64KB SMRAM), then flashing cursor; no promptHere are specifics:-ACER Aspire 2239 (91.AA772.GT7)-Drive was formatted to remove drive contents.-Do not have restoration software for system-Am trying to install Windows 98SE but will not execute startup disk (Do not know what OS was on system before, but going w/ Win98 because of RAM/disk size and have original CD)-Entered BIOS w/ CTRL/Alt/ESC and drives, boot order fine (even has correct date/time)-jumper on Western Digital WD64AA is showing 'master' but is only fixed drive in system-if change WD64AA jumper, get an 'invalid drive' error-Doesn't appear that POST is completing (only screen at startup is ACER bios v2.0, good memory check, then flashing cursor; no prompt)-a: lights up, but doesn't execute startup disk-Have tried several startup disks

Answer:Not executing startup disk

Just an update......Left running and eventually a 'Serial port conflict, equipment config' error displayed.  Changed serial port settings, and now will eventually go through POST and display config menu at top of screen with an 'illegal system disk, replace disk and press any key' error. (Takes maybe 30 minutes from power on to do this.  Sits with same screen as before and flashing cursor during the wait)The a: lights every so often and the 'illegal system disk' error redisplays.Possible the disk is needing to be partitioned, waiting for disk files?  Or could the a: be bad even if light comes on?

I have VCom's SystemSuite 7 as my do-all utility. One of the things it will do is create a restore point whenever a programs wants to install anything -- so if it screws your computer up, you simply run that restore point and it takes the new program out.

I recently upgraded to Windows Medial Player 11. Now every time I open WMP, I get the "do you want to create a restore point" and the file it names is WMP's setup.exe. Have never encountered this with any previous version of WMP or for that matter, any other program. What's causing it?

Running Windows XP-SP2 with all updates including IE7.

So I turned on my computer after waking up this morning and 10 seconds later it restarts on it's own. When it boots up again I run quick scans to see if there is anything and I find nothing. A couple hours go by, go to eat and come back to find a recording of someone talking through my headset. Now I know something is up and go through task manager to find ping.exe running at 500MB usage. So I close it and the recording stops.

Anybody notice anything suspicious? Kaspersky 2012, SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes aren't finding anything (and are updated of course).

I'm trying to prevent a possibly infected external hard drive from running its autorun file on my system. The drive has not been connected to my computer yet.

I downloaded 'Panda USB Vaccine' to prevent this on initial connection; but I'm still not sure if I can safely "double-click", transfer, or peek around inside the drive, without accidentally activating autorun in the process? That could totally defeat the purpose of the Panda program.

Answer:preventing autorun from executing?

Hello Curious Mew,

You can use the tutorial below to completely block autorun.inf files before connecting it.

Autorun.inf Files - Completely Block

Just be sure to scan the HDD before opening it.

Hope this helps,

alright, I've had this problem for several months and I've decided I can no longer "just deal with it." I'm running windows xp home edition and certain programs (not all of them, always the same ones, though sometimes the problem "spreads" to other programs, will clarify) will not open. in most cases there is nothing to show that the program was even attempted to be run except that the hourglass icon appears next to my mouse cursor for a moment and then disappears. Two clarifications: one, I did not originally attempt to fix this issue because the programs affected were not of great importance to me, and two, I did not have an antivirus program installed until recently (and I DO have broadband and a household full of others who use this pc, though I am the primary user). Here's how things played out:
The first program to go was my father's palm pilot desktop program, which was not an issue because he could still interface with his laptop. I tried a couple clean installs and could not figure out how to get it to start working again. The next program I noticed did not work (it could have stopped working at the same time as the palm software: I rarely used it) was musicmatch jukebox, which again, was no big loss. My sister attempted to install two digital cameras, and the imaging software with each would not work in the same fashion (I unfortunately do not know the model names or programs involved.) The last straws were these: windows... Read more

Our company has a DFS with about 20 servers. To my knowledge, there is no virus infection on any of the servers. However, there is one file share that the entire company has read access to. All the sudden there is an unusual EXE file sitting on this share. At the moment, nobody seems to know what the EXE file is and has left it on the share. What I am wondering, what happens if a single user executes this file and it is a virus? Would the virus most likely just infect their PC, or is it possible for the virus to infect all the servers in the DFS?

All the computers and servers are running Symantec Endpoint Protection, so hopefully if the file is executed it will be picked up right away and deleted. But what is the likely hood that running this EXE file would infect more than just the PC it was run from?

Answer:Executing a Virus that is on a DFS Share?

Have you tried answering the question as to if it's a virus...scanning it, and getting a few other opinions by submitting it to jotti or virustotal so that a dozen or more scanners can check it?

Can it infect the workstation that runs it? Yes. Can it infect the server(s) and/or rest of the network...yes, depends what the virus is.

Hey all, I'm having a problem I have never seen or heard of before...

A few months ago this started ocurring, and I've searched and searched the internet but could not find an answer. The problem is that if I click on any program file (***.exe) it will not run. For example, if I click on Windows Media Player.exe it will not run. But if I click on Song8.mp3, it opens up in Windows Media Player and runs fine.

EXE's on my desktop, startmenu, everywhere on my computer are not running.

In order for me to run an executable file, I must find where it is on my PC, and then run the Command Prompt and path it out. Once I'm in the right folder and I've typed the filename in correctly, it runs without a problem.

I have not changed anything (that I recall/noticed) and I do not have any viruses or spyware.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Justin Lee

When I download files that contain viruses mostly from Limewire how do they infect my computer when I don't even execute them? :-? I understand that they would show up in my virus scans just for being there, but how do they execute themselves without me starting them? I ask this because I thought I was reasonably safe scanning all the files I downloaded before I ran them, but I downloaded a virus and prompty deleted it after discovering it, but it kept dumping me to the BSOD after a few minutes of starting Windows. The problem has since been fixed, but I am curious, and yes I know Limewire and other P2P networks are infested with this sort of stuff.

Hiya...

The following select

select * from sys.fulltext_languages

Says query completed successfully but returns me no rows.

sp_fulltext_service 'update_languages'
Returns error: "Informational: No full-text supported languages found."

I have Windows 2003 x64 and SQL Server 2005 sp1 build 2047. I am running x3650 IBM Server, System 7979. Full-text indexing is installed and the services start/run with no problem.

To rule out a problem with my specific database, I created a brand new test database, selecting 1033 ENG and I still get the exact same error. Unlike others I have read about experiencing the same issue, my problem just started occuring recently. My SQL database has been working like a charm since 01/07, and now it just started acting up. The only change made to the server was the installation of BackupExec Remote Agent for Windows Servers & the CPS Agent for Windows Servers. I have stopped those services from running and that does not fix my problem. Also, the timing of installing BackupExec was close to the time the server started acting up, but not right on que; I'm relatively certain it's not BackupExec causing the issue.

I have updated system BIOS, checked for registry corruption and I have updated the firmware for every piece of hardware in the machine.

I have found on other forums that sometimes the SQL Server account & the SQL Server FullText account will have trouble talking to each other and need to be set to L... Read more

I was not able to execute any programs that were stored in my Program Files (x86) folder nor did my anti-virus start up (at the time it was Avira). Double-clicking, right-click and run, etc, etc. did not work. I would see the 'loading' cursor for a brief moment, but then nothing. No errors, no sounds, nada. I eventually solved it (somewhat of an accident. Trial and error for the win) by doing a System Restore.

However, it cost me my Avira anti-virus program. I had to delete it and re-install it, but when I tried to re-install, I got a message that it was already installed on my computer (even though I deleted everything, registry files and all). After several unsuccessful attempts to re-install Avira (even though it said it was installed successfully), I installed AVG on March 21.

That worked--until I powered on my computer when I got home (which was the same day I installed AVG, just at the end of the day). Same exact situation. Couldn't execute any programs from Program Files (x86) folder. Did another System Restore and I am back to square one.

The above posting was basically copy and pasted here with some minor adjustments from a previous thread I started at the Spybot Search&Destroy Forums. http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=46930 is the link to my specific thread.

The important thing about mentioning that website is because at the end of that thread, it was concluded that I did NOT have any viruses or infections after several tests that they condu... Read more

Hi There

I'm not sure if this is possible or not. I have created a macro called "Macro1". Now I also created another macro called "Macro2". In "Macro2" I can call Macro1 by writing the code Application.Run "Macro1".

Say I write the words Macro1 in any cell in Sheet1. Say I write it in cell A1. Now I put the curser in cell B1. In "Macro2" I want to execute "Macro1" but differently from the conventional way as above. Here is the code that I used but it doesn't work.

Sub Macro2()
ActiveCell.select
Application.Run Macro:=ActiveCell.Offset(0, -1).Range("A1")

In this example the Active Cell is B1.

Do you see what I want to do? I want to execute the macro whose macro name is in Cell A1. The reason for the relative reference is that I do not want to tie the macro name to any particular cell. Is this possible or not?

Mario

Answer:Executing a macro in Excel

I don't now how to get the name of a macro from a cell, but you'll definitely need a Worksheet_Selection() for your Macro, so you need to put Macro 2 in the Sheet code (not a module) and change the name of it by using the dropdowns in the code window to get Worksheet_Selection

Hi,
I have a Lenovo Ideapad 11S, and my OS is Windows 10. After using it for some time, suddenly all the executables (exes) stop working. Even the windows commands like reboot, task manager etc. don't start at all. The Windows menu continues to function, but on clicking the buttons nothing happens. The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. After the reboot, the problems go away for some time, and then reappear again.

I copied one section of it to paste below:

Hi,
I have a Lenovo Ideapad 11S, and my OS is Windows 10. After using it for some time, suddenly all the executables (exes) stop working. Even the windows commands like reboot, task manager etc. dont start at all. The Windows menu continues to function, but on clicking the buttons nothing happens. The only thing i can do is a hard reboot. After the reboot, the problems go away for some time, and then reappear again.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ajey

Answer:Exes stop executing after a while

Hi Ajey. Welcome to the TenForums @ajeysp

You didn't mention what version and build are you on

Windows key + R, type winver, enter

When did this problem start? What changes were made just before this issue started. Are restore Points enabled?

First I would run

sfc /scannow

from command prompt(admin) or powershell(admin)

Does the machine exhibit same behaviour on a clean boot.

Is there a simple command I can use to shut down my PC in the HWinfo64 monitoring tool? It lets you program it to execute a program if a certain parameter is met. I want to tell it to shut down the PC if the CPU temp hits a certain max temp, just as a precaution, like coretemp does automatically. HWinfo lets me point it to an exe to execute so I'm wondering if there's a way to execute a shutdown command? Maybe a bat file I can point it to with a command to shutdown? Any ideas?

Edit: I see there's shutdown.exe in the system32 folder which should work. Is there any arguments I should include when pointing HWinfo to that exe? I think I've got:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe
with the arguments set to:
/s /t 00 /f

where /s is for shutdown the system, /t 00 is the number of seconds to shutdown (0 seconds) and /f forces running applications to close without forewarning to users. Is this correct?

SORRY JUST REALIZED THIS IS NO HIJACKTHIS LOGS, THOUGH IT SAID THE OPPOSITE

Answer:[HijackThis Log] Something keeps executing ping.exe -_-

Malware topichttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic427459.html/page__p__2471411#entry2471411Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.Please be patient. I have a Dell laptop running Win XP which apparently does not run the autoexec.nt file when loading DOS applications. I run DOS programs on my other machines running XP, and this works fine: Any path statement or environment variables placed in autoexec.nt load properly.

On this machine the autoexec.nt file is completely ignored, although a basic PATH is loaded from somewhere.

If I check the path from the command window, the system-loaded path is: (C:\windows;C:\windows\system32;C:\windows\system32\wbem). Have I missed something??

I'm relatively new to using XP, but have oodles of experience using prior Windows O/S versions. I use a dial-up Internet connection, and while I've had no trouble in setting up the dial-up connection and connecting to the Internet, in contrast to Window 98, I've never been able to get my dial-up interface to come up and actually automatically initiate the dial-up sequence, when I launch a browser.

When I launch a (any) browser, the dial-up interface will come up, but I always have to click on the Dial button to start the modem actually dialing. Under the Control Panel/Internet/Options/Connections, I've got the settings to Dial whenever a network connection is not present, but changing the settings to Always dial doesn't seem to have any effect either. Under Windows 98, I know you would just check the two boxes on the dial-up interface (password save and dial automatically I recall), to make this all happen automatically.

Also, when I shifted to XP (on a new laptop I purchased), I noted that the Dial-up interface screen is much bigger than what displayed under Windows 98, but except for some minor differences, it has much the same in the way of functionality that I was used to. Any suggestions to get the Dial-up to well, dial. I can't believe that capability was eliminated under XP.

Answer:Solved: Executing Automatic Dial-Up with XP

Okay, credit to solving this one goes to mailman, who contributed to a parallel posting that was up on the WindowsBBS (www.WindowsBBS.com) board.

His correct solution:

Please go into Control Panel > Network Connections.
Right-click on your default dial-up account and select Properties.
Select the Options tab.

Are the following options UNchecked?

* Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.
* Prompt for phone number

Upon reviewing the properties for my default connection, lo and behold it was prompting for the name, password and phone number. After unchecking those two boxes, the dial-up interface skipped right to executing the dial-up, when the (any) browser is now launched.

Hello everyone!

So, don't pay attention to my computer stats, as now I own a Macintosh, however, I've been having problems getting a Perl code to execute in Firefox, or any other browser on my computer for that matter!?!?! I'm so confused, because on another computer that I use a remote server, it's able to read it.

So this is what I do.

I make the Perl code in the terminal using Vim:

#!usr/bin/perl

print "Content-type:text/html\n\n";

print "<html> \n";
print "Welcome to the world of Perl! Please enjoy yourself \n";
print "</html> \n";

and then I save the file as hsimmon.2.2.pl and exit out of Vim, and run the code at the command line, and this is what I get:

Content-type:text/html

<html>
Welcome to the world of Perl! Please enjoy yourself
</html>

Next, I move to the browser (firefox), and I type the location into the address bar as such:

file:///Users/harrysimmons/root/perl_backup/hsimmons/S2.2/hsimmon.2.2.pl

Then, the output of the browser does not execute the code, it just displays all of the code in a plain text format. Is it because it's not running through Perl first? How am I able to make the code run through Perl first, and then submitted to the browser?

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Firefox not Executing Perl Code

Firefox does not run Perl code (nor does any major browser). When making webpages using Perl and other server-side scripting languages, the Perl code is run on the web server and then sent to the browser from the server. So you either need to set up a web server on your machine to test the perl code, or get some online hosting service where you can upload your files.

I have put the following into task manager: Adobe update, Jave update and shutdown. None of these are executing and running! Can anyone tell me why? Maybe I am not doing it right?? Running windows xp home edition, sp3.

Thanks, Joe

Answer:Solved: Task Manager not executing

Shutdown should be an option form Task Manager's menubar. The others would need to be entered under the Processes tab>File menu>New Task box but in the form of the exeuteable file. Try wuauclt.exe for Windows Update Automatic Update CLienT and then hit Enter.

From one who knows very little about Access:

Consultant has designed database. Front end is accessed through a 'switchboard'. I have one user who when she depresses any of the buttons on the switchboard receives the following error:
There was an error executing the command
Consultant suggested copying DAO*.DLL files from good machine to this PC. Unfortunately, this did not resolve.

Any of you most-execellent Access-geniuses know off the top of your head what may be happening? Other users accessing database without issue.

Thanks!

Recently my laptop crashed (BSoD) with a language pack fault. I fixed it by restoring it to a working point but since doing that my laptop won't connect to a WiFi I usually connect to (not a home WiF).

I tried to run a Diagnostic on it but got the error that my diagnostic tool was not executing.

This problem is similar but the IP Reset file did not work on my laptop.

I can upload a .txt of my ipconfig /all later as I'm currently on my mobile.

Hi, I built my gaming rig last christmas, and it has served me pretty well except for one annoying problem. And frankly, it's starting to get very old.

Basically, when I start some programs, my computer seems non-responsive when I click the icon. This happens on games too. For example, I'll double-click Toca Race Driver 3 on my desktop, and hear cpu activity for a bit. Then, nothing will happen for several minutes. I'll just be sitting on my desktop.

It's as if I never launched the program in the first place. Out of frustration, I'll click the icon again, to have the same situation duplicated. Next, I CTRL+ATL+DEL, only to see "racedriver.exe" on my apps :x . Finally, 10 minutes later, the program will actually execute and I'll see the game running. In fact, I make a habit to leave my room for a bit when I launch games such as Race Driver 3, BF2142, and CS Source, because of the time I spend waiting for them to really launch onto my screen.

This happens in more than just games. My rig acts like it's down-right bogged when running other programs. I find myself closing internet explorer windows all of the time due to them not responding. I had to configure my microphone yesterday, only to find the wizard crash on me two or three times.

I really don't know where to start if this is a hardware issue. My old Pentium4 HP wouldn't do anything as odd as this, ever. I ran two instances of memtest overnight, and it returned no errors. I'm using... Read more

Answer:Computer non-responsive when executing programs

Try running memtest you may have some memory problems developing .
You can run scandisk or the western digital utility to check your drive on boot up .You may have an OS corruption problem or virus . Also look at your power monitor in BIOS make sure your voltages look ok .

When trying to open up any application, I receive a windows error window with 'OK' button titled (application).exe - Bad Image. The error states "the application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\wuveyipe.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette" I have run SUPERAntiSpyware Free Addition, Microsoft's Defender and more recently HijackThis. After running Winferno's Registry Power Cleaner following the three above scans, I am still left with the same error. I've attached the latest hijackthis log below. Any ideas on what can be done to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.
