Preferred Solution: cant turn on windows security updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Sorry for delayed response. Forums have been really busy. If you still need help with this do following, please.
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds file to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

I'm using Windows XP. On the "Windows Security Center" page I'm unable to turn ON the Automatic Updates. I've followed there directions and have gone to the "Control Panel" then to "Automatic Updates". On that particular page I'm able to highlight "Automatic (recommended)" to upload everyday at 2:00am. But my Windows security Center doesn't allow me to turn it ON. I'm not that advanced with computers so if anybody has a suggestion please speak basic. Thanks

Answer:Can't turn ON my "Windows Security" Auto updates.

Hi Fishin -Are the options to select Automatic Updates in any way "greyed out", meaning a bit harder to see and operate ??http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/updaterestore.regThe link above from Kelleys Korner (very trusted site) may help you to restore this back to normal.Worth a try -Thank You -

I have windows xp Professional Version 2002 sp3. Seems I got a virus when I down loaded a movie(my bad). Was getting the BSOD, and alerts for Windows Automatic Updates to be turned on. Also I am running Microsoft security essentials which also won't update. Although Malwarebytes updates automatically. I downloaded Superantispyware and ran it 3 times in safe mode .Found and deleted malware. Rebooted and so far no BSOD ( fingers crossed). Still get the alerts for the updates.

There was an Office vulnerability that was fixed with the April patch Tuesday in an Office update, but we've had trouble making sure all users have the updated Office patch as N-Central(our patch management tool) doesn't always list what build/patch Office
is currently running accurately.

We do know all our PCs have the April/May security updates. Is the Office Update combined into the big monthly one?

Computer is a Windows 7 64 bit with SP1 computer that I've been working on for a cousin of mine. Cleaned out a quite a bit of junk and malware already via my the antivirus (Symantec Endpoint Protection), as well as with malwarebytes and did a registry clean up with CCleaner.  Initially the security center didn't even show up in the Services, now it does.  Only problem I still have is an inability to do any updates on this computer. I keep getting this popup.

I'm running out of solutions and fear I can do more harm than good if I keep stabbing in the dark. Any ideas guys?

Answer:Security Center shows it's started but I still can't turn on or get updates

I would try installing a free copy of malwarebytes and running a flash scan and a full scan, in that order. After all items are found and removed I would run unhide, found at http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Please let us know the results.

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. Thank you, PhotoRay

Answer:In XP Pro can't turn off Windows Firewall or Turn on Automatic Updates

How did you remove Norton in the first place?

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

Its been doing most of these updates forever, when I go to shut it down it updates but when I wake up in the morning these updates are still not done... It's like they never finish. This happens every night for the past 6 months or so i'm getting tired of it now so i need some help. I've tried Reset Windows Update History that works for a week or so but they eventually come back.

I have a whole ton of security updates for windows XP going back over 2 years in my Add/Remove programs list and I want to know if it is safe to delete those older than the most recent ones. Its taking up too much space on my computer and because of that I have stopped any current regular updates by switching off the automatic updates settings. Could someone please advise me if it is safe to do this?

How can I turn off windows updates?
The new windows update settings page is extremely basic and appears to lack many options from windows 7.
I am concerned about updates downloading and update checks being performed whilst gaming. I would not be happy with bandwidth or system resources being used up during my play sessions as performance may be impacted.
Is there any way to either disable the updates or to ensure update checks and downloads are only performed at specific times?

don't know any way of turning of MS OS updates.....you can schedule the restart, so it doesn't restart while you are working on the PC.....using god mode ( search this forum for instructions) you can disable driver updating.....the only other way of disabling MS OS updates, as far as I am aware is to,use WIFI NOT an Ethernet cable, then in internet settings in settings you can tell windows you are on a metered connection and it is meant to disable MS updates as it would cost you, being on a ' metered' connection.....seemed to work with mine, but WIFI too slow so went back to Ethernet connection and just disabled driver updates in god mode.....

My computer recently got infected with a few viruses. I have the full paid version of NOD32, and it caught a lot in it's quarantine, and I removed them all. I also did a full scan with NOD32 and Spybot: Search & Destroy in safe mode. But now whenever my computer starts up, it says windows automatic updates is turned off. I try to turn it back on, and it says i should turn it back on manually in control panel>system>automatic updates. When i go there, it says automatic updates ARE on.Do I still have a virus on my computer?

I had some malware on my computer, but went through the read and run me first topic, and it seems to be gone now. I'm running Win XP SP3. The malware was one that runs a fake virus scan and comes up with a ton of bogus hits.

My windows autoupdate is now turned off, and I can't turn it back on.

My .exe file association was lost and I couldn't run any programs, but I've fixed that now.

I'd like someone to take a look at my log files and see if everything looks ok. I had some trouble running RootRepeal. It crashed a couple times when my computer's screensaver came on. In the multiple times I ran it trying to get it to finish, it seemed to be picking up different items on C: each time. Not sure what that was all about.

Thanks for the help.

My daughter brought me her HP Touchsmart 15 computer to clean up and get working again. It had a few malware programs on it and I have removed them (I think) and have run into a problem. I checked the little flag at the right side of the task bar "Solve PC Issues" and saw that windows updates have NEVER been run on her machine! It's almost 2 years old!!! I tried to turn them on but I got the message that "Windows Update has been disabled by your system administrator" I checked User accounts and there is only one user and she is designated as an administrator...
What do I need to do to turn on her updates?

Answer:Do I need to turn off Windows Automatic Updates?

Windows Updates are vital from many perspectives...

Next week you will be offered new updates.
It's also known as Patch Tuesday or Wednesday, depending where in the world you are...
On rare occasions (if a security vulnerability warrants it), Microsoft might release a patch out-of-band (meaning not on patch Tuesday/ Wednesday)... doesn't often happen though.

IMHO tis a good idea to have your computer set to inform you, but not download or install any updates offered.
Would also recommend you do a few at a time rather than oodles at once.

Tis a good idea to create a System Restore point before downloading....just in case!

Hello.
To turn off automatic updates in Windows 10, we basically need to prevent the Windows Update service from running on startup. This can be done by going to Start Menu>type 'Services'>look for a service called 'Windows Update' and double click on it>if it's already running stop it and put its startup type to 'disabled'.
Cheers.

Hello,

We had a malware attack, and successfully (we think) followed the advice here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-xp-home-security-2012

All seems well, except now we can't get Windows Automatic Updates turned on. On boot, the computer pops up to give us a warning that it's not turned on, and suggests doing it manually. However, when we do it manually via the automatic updates checkbox, it says we've changed it (and retains the chosen button as if we'd changed it), but Automatic Updates is still off.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Lynne

The security center is warning all the time that the automatic updates have been turned off. When I try to turn them on from the security center or from other places nothing happens as if something turns them off right away. Spybot-SD Resident finds pretty much every time I start windows something like that:
Denied (based on user blacklist) value "00eae860" (new data: "rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sxmlpyfr.dll",b") added in System Startup global entry!
Every time the system32\sdve.dll name changes like asdvsa.dll etc, allways looks like random list of letters. I have allowed or denied that but the problems remain the same.
Some trojan Vundo infected files are also found once in a while and deleted right away or after reboot.
Some programs have Runtime errors "This application has requested Runtime to terminate it an unusual way." Other users do not have similar errors using same software. There is likely something wrong with rundll32.exe unless it is totally normal that Spybot-SD Resident notices it every once in a while.

Hello all,
First time to post on this forum so bear with me please.  My XP Pro desktop will not let me turn on Automatic Updates for some reason.  It is all "greyed out" and will not allow me to set it for Automatic Updates.  Any ideas?

Answer:Windows Automatic Updates - Cannot Turn ON

Well...it might have to do with the fact that XP is no longer supported for critical updates.

It makes sense to me that autoupdates might now be nonexistent for XP, while one can probably still go to the Windows/Microsoft Update sites and manually download/install any updates from the past which may need reinstallation.

My Automatic Updates for Windows XP will not turn on. When I click the red shield next to the clock on the bottom right hand of the screen, Windows Security Center pops up. Under the Automatic Updates tab, it is labeled OFF in red font. I click the button to turn them back on and this messages appears "We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Update settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK." I do exactly this, go back to the Security Center, try to turn them on again, and the same message appears. I've run Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Super Anti-Spyware. All the results almost always come back clean. Occasionally, Spybot will find something and it fixes it, but the problem still persists. I've experienced no problems with my computer in terms of speed or anything like that. Everything still works fine, but I know that it's important to have Automatic Updates turned on. It's also annoying when the little balloon keeps popping up at the bottom of the screen, telling me that my Automatic Updates is off. I've tried to fix this problem before on another forum, but nothing worked. I did the whole Start, Run, services.msc process and that didn't do anything. I also tried the Dial-a-Fix program? That also didn't help. Does anyone have anything to offer that could solve this ... Read more

My DVD drive is not working, so I tried to run the Microsoft Fix It application to see what was wrong. It tells me that I need to download the XP Service Pack 3 and .NET framework 2.0 or later version. I figured that would easy enough, and tried to do just that. It informs me that I need to turn my Windows Automatic Updates on. Hey, no problem, right?

What should be as simple as a few mouse clicks has turned into a frustrating afternoon! First I tried the link in my lower right tray, and it informs me that I need to go to the Control Panel to turn them on. So I do. Still nothing. When I go into the Control Panel, it shows me that Automatic Updates are already on, and yet my icon in my tray says it's not. I thought maybe the icon hadn't caught up with the times yet and tried again to download SP3-same message!

So I then tried Control Panel-Other Control Panel Options, where I supposedly should see the Automatic Updates option, but I don't! The only option it gives me is 'Program Updates' for InstallShield. After going through these steps numerous times, I finally admit defeat and am turning to the experts. Please help me before I pull all my hair out! Thank you!

Answer:Cannot turn on Windows Automatic updates!

You could maybe go too the following link
Microsoft Windows Update
or maybe you need too check the update service is active to do so
go to Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to automatic updates and double click on it, ensure the start-up type is automatic and the service is started. Then view the automatic update tab in system properties again.

Hello all,

I've been having this problem for a long time now and have found various, unreliable solutions each time. The basic problem is that my computer will turn on, the fans will turn on, the mouse and keyboard turn on, the CD drive turns on, the disk access light blinks, and everything seems to be working fine, but the monitor won't turn on. I'm using dual LG monitors, connected to one of my two NVIDIA 8600 GT graphics cards which are SLI'd together.

I have about a 1 in 100 chance of the monitor actually turning on (which is to say that out of about 100 tries just turning on and off the computer, the monitor will turn on). In the event that the monitor does turn on, I get the "windows did not start up correctly" error, at which point I try to run startup repair, with varying degrees of success.

About 1 in every 5 times, a system restore back to before I installed the updates on my computer will work. For the other 4 times, system restore will either fail, or when restarting the computer, the monitor again fails to turn on. However, when this does work, the updates which I had installed end up not installed, and the next time I shut down my computer, I have to repeat the same process again.

I've also confirmed that it must have something to do with the system updates. If I force shut-down my computer without installing updates, I have no problems turning it back on. I'll get the start-up message that windows did not shut down correctly, and I'll be a... Read more

Answer:Monitor won't turn on after windows updates

If you can do a restore to a point before the updates when everything works - do it.

Then immediately go to "Windows Update > Change Settings" and turn off Automatic Updates. Choose: "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" under "Important Updates".

If there are updates downloaded and ready to be installed remove them. Be sure you can restart your computer without updates trying to install. Confirm that the issue is gone.

Then you can install the updates manually, by going to Windows Update. Uncheck all the updates, then install them one at a time. Test your computer after each installation for a good amount of time. If you reach the update that causes the problem then just restore back. You can then mark that update as "Don't show me this update again".

And I suggest leaving Automatic Updates off. IMHO no one should use automatic updating. A nice idea but problematic by nature. I believe that many of these issues related to updates are due more to the problems caused by installing several system changes at once then to any one update alone. My 2 cents.

Earlier today I made the mistake of accidentally turning off my computer while it was updating. I tried to restart it afterwards and it won't do anything. I can hear the computer running and the light is on but nothing will appear on the monitor and the keyboard is not lit up. It won't even show the booting screen, my monitor doesn't even recognize that the computer is plugged in. I'm using an ASUS desktop computer.

Did You hit the power button and turned it off or used the shut down or restart command ? First thing to try is a hard reset and see if it will start up after that. Good Luck

I recently installed GTX670 SLI in my machine and run some benchmarks to test it is all working.

Afterwards, I did a clean format complete re-install with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 with updates. It appears now when I shut down my machine, windows turns off the display and seems to shut down but does NOT turn off the fans/LEDs on my computer.

I then re-installed a clean windows 7, installed my drivers ONLY (no windows updates) and it shuts down/turns the computer off fine.

Not sure what is going on, some update must be causing this? Can anyone help me?

Answer:Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 shut down not turn off after updates

Another install, something strange is happening.

When I shut down. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't.

If it don't then I have to hold power button 10 s and shut down. Then when I turn pc on it turns on for a few sec and then turns off, and then turns on again by itself and proceeds to continue to load up Windows.

Am now reinstalling and going to continue to test this.

everytime my pc installs w10 updates everything freezes then I have to go and uninstall the updates to rectify the problem w10 is crap but I cant go back to 8.1 there has got to be a way of turning off updates but I cant find it

Answer:how do i turn off updates on w10 on pc hate windows 10 but cant go back to 8.1

Which w10 build are you on? if things are freezing I think you should consider doing a refresh (settings > update > recovery > refresh and keep files)
If internet speed is your main issue, try a program like netbalancer..
If all of that fails, there is a way to turn off windows updates, but it isn't recommended or you should at least turn it back on every other day or night so that the necessary updates can download... Try the other solution first tho :)

Windows 10 is the world’s most controversial success. Even for a (mostly) free upgrade, 75M installs in just five weeks is exceptional. But as Windows 10’s user base rapidly increases so do complaints about how it invades user privacy and forcibly controls updates. In response to this Microsoft has now taken a first step in the right direction…
Speaking to press this week Microsoft Corporate Vice President Jim Alkove said the company will stop hiding the contents of Windows 10 updates and what changes they will make once installed.
In fact Alkove went as far as admitting these changes come directly from user complaints:
“We’ve heard that feedback from enterprise customers so we’re actively working on how we provide them with information about what’s changing and what new capabilities and new value they’re getting,” he declared.
But did you spot that vital keyword? Yes, Enterprise.

You can only [email protected] off your enterprise customers so much before they push back.  I wonder if this will eventually include Non-Enterprise but I sincerely doubt it. Microsoft probably figures since you cannot stop the updates why bother telling you what is in them or what or what they do.

Hi there,
I'm hoping someone can help with this. I am trying to sort out some problems for a friend (blind leading the blind as I have very limited computing knowledge).
Pop-ups appear whenever a new tab or browser window is opened (often opening a new window themselves) and often whenever you navigate away from a page.
Also, automatic updates will not turn on at all. I have tried doing this in the normal way, when the bubble pops up at start up and also through the control panel into admin tools and then services but it resets itself to off or disabled every time.
I downloaded Spybot and as per advice on another forum I ran this in safe mode with system restore turned off.
On normal reboot this appeared to have solved the pop-up problem but I still could not turn on automatic updates - however after a few minutes pop-ups started appearing again.
I have now completed a HJT log which I will post here - can anyone help me sort this out for them.
The computer now has McAfee installed but did not until a couple of days ago - it is up to date but I fear it's a case of locking the stable door after the horse had already bolted!
Here is the log - any help would be very very much appreciated!

I had updates set to download and then ask me which ones I wanted to install. But it only worked like that for a short time, then it started installing automatically.

After Patch Tuesday this week, everything started crashing. I did a system restore to the point before the updates, and most things are now working okay. But when I try to shut down the PC, the automatic updates start installing again, and there's no way to turn them off. Selecting manual updates has no effect, they still come automatically. If I uncheck all the updates in the list of 'important updates available' they only stay unchecked until I close the updates window - when I reopen it, they're all checked again.

I did a full system virus scan, but it found nothing infected.

I would be very grateful for any insights into this. Has anyone else had trouble with this week's updates? I'm using Windows 7 64-bit.

Hi Hope I am posting in the right place as never done this before.

I had a virus Win.32.AutoRun.tmp picked up by spotbot which I hope has now gone as Spybot showing no infection, Malware and Superanti Spyware are all were coming up clean. Was having browser redirect issues which seem to be ok.

However, windows automatic updates is off - if I try and turn on in the security center it says We are sorry the security centre could not change your settings - go to control panel and the automatic updates tab. But there is no icon in the control panel and no tab for automatic updates in system properties. Tried going onthe microsoft site to download and receive error and cannot install active x to check.

Also cant do a system restore in safe mode as when I select a date and click next nothing happens.

Machine is running Windows XP MediaCenter Service Pack 3 and have AVG Free 2011.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I seem to be going round in circles.

Hello,
Just because Spybot, Malware(bytes) ,and Superanti Spyware are all were coming up clean, it does not mean you are not still infected. It would be a good idea to post over in the Malware Removal Forum to make sure you are clean and then come back here if there is still a problem.

Hi.
It's quite annoying to sort up things after almost every Windows update. -,-

Another issue it's happening me, like the object suggest it to you: I turn off the option for downloading and installing Other Microsoft Products (in the advanced options of Windows Update)... But... How do I turn it off actually?

Thanks and greetings!

I have a laptop that uses Windows 10 and I hate it. Everything is a learning curve, difficult to do, and now I'm ready to throw this thing out the window and wave "Bye-bye!" because I can't find a way to turn off automatic updates. I just wasted over two hours between waiting for an update that abruptly took control of the computer for more than an hour, with no option whatsoever to temporarily turn it off (a la Windows Vista, which I also despise), and for the other hour I've been searching frantically ever since for a solution.
One solution said to go into Settings (ok, fine, it shows PC Settings, not just Settings)/Update & Security/Windows Update. Then it said to go into "Advanced Options." From Advanced Options, I am supposed to show some kind of drop/pull down setting immediately under "Choose how updates are installed" that says, "Notify to schedule restart"...well, it's not there. I have "Choose how updates are installed, and then immediately underneath, where the drop/pull down setting is supposed to be, it says, "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows." I can click and click on "Choose how updates are installed," but that isn't a clickable option. It does nothing. It's just a label.
I'm just trying to turn off the automatic updates. That's it. I've looked all over in settings and can't find anything. Is my only option really regedit? I don't want to do that. Isn't ther... Read more

Open Run > type services.msc > OK > scroll down to Windows Update > right click at it > click Properties > under Startup type, click the pointer and select Disable > OK
Note that this stops patches and fixes that make you system more secure against attack. Use at your own risk.
You can also selectively remove updates if they cause an issue for you: Don't Like the Last Update? Uninstall it. [Easy Fix] which might be safer in the long run.

Due to a conflict with an updated version of Microsoft Silverlight, (it clashes with an in-house web-based program we use here at work. I have to manage 20 Windows 7 computers, I had to uninstall Silverlight version 5.1.20125.1 and reinstall an older version 4.1.10329.0 that allows our programs to run properly.
The newer version of Silverlight was part of last Tuesday's Windows update package. After getting back to the version we want, I thought we'd be fine, but the next morning, Windows update had reinstalled the Silverlight 5 version again. I redid the uninstall of the version 5, went back to 4, and then went into Windows Update and told it to never check for updates. I thought that would be enough, but the next morning, checking a couple of the computers, Windows updating had turned itself back on again.
Next I read that all I needed to do was stop and disable the Windows Update service, but after shutting down and restarting Windows Updating is back on again! the Service is running and enabled!

what the heck do I need to do to stop Windows Updates from running until we can fix our in-house program to work properly with Silverlight 5?

This is a problem that I've found a lot on the Internet but have yet to find a solution that works in my case.
I am using Windows 8.1
I cannot download apps from the Store and an error message says that this is due to Windows Firewall not being turned on.
I cannot turn Windows Firewall on because we error message says that it cannot change some of my settings. (Side note: I am using Avast but even when this is turned on I get the same message from the Store)
I cannot start it manually as I get an error message there too (I'll update with exact wording later as I'm currently on my phone)
I am also completely unable to restore to factory settings or create any recovery media.
I have done comprehensive virus scans and have absolutely no issues in that sense.
I have reset Internet Explorer (apparently to reset my connection) to no avail.
I've tried every solution I've found online and I'm just stumped. Help would be deeply appreciated.

I am unable to install windows updates- they it says failed. Malwarebytes scanned caught & quarantined, emsisoft installed, scanned- quaritined- (since uninstalled), same with eset online scanner.

When I go to a webpage, the entire page shifts down, I get blocks of flashing ads on the page and sometimes another tab opens up- according to my history it's "a.akamaihd.net redirect".

I've got complete scan logs from farbwar that I can provide, but as requested before posting here is the information on this computer.

Hello,
Everytime I run Spybot S&D it finds a virtumonde.prx trojan. I've been having lots of pop-ups through Explorer. I switched to Firefox, but some popups are still happening, for example to cleanuptool.com.
I'm also having trouble getting my automatic updates turned on, I've tried several suggestions found on the web with no luck. I tried going to the microsoft site to upgrade, but when I enter an address into Explorer, Firefox takes over and goes there instead. I've done the services.mrc run command and turned automatic updates to auto, but it just reverts back to disabled. Through Control Panel and System, it says that auto updates are on, but I have a red shield in my toolbar that says it's off.

I installed Spyware Blaster, Spybot S&D and iespyad. I had AdAware, but uninstalled it when I started using Spybot.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I was having a virus/malware issue and in the process of fixing that Adaware suggested that I remove a couple of items. 2 of these were in my registry and I realized afterward that they were somehow related to windows security center.

Obviously, I am not very computer literate and know just enough to screw things up. Is there a way to fix this or will I have to reinstall Windows? I have done some searching on the web but can't find my answers.

Thanks, Dan

Can't turn on windows automatic updates,IE6 pops up,and computer is running slow!

I have MicroTrend antivirus and since yesterday all the above problems have been occuring. yesterday I was surfing the web using firefox when i noticed it was starting to become really slow loading. Then there were 3 consecutive unauthorized change prevention popups from microtrend antivirus, 2 of which I denied and i didn't get asked to deny the 3rd warning.

Since then my Internet Explorer 6 pops up once in a while with random stuff. Such as something starting with ylwbook. something(i forgot rest of url), 70.38.98.32, and 85.12.43.70. These IE pop up and I am not able to view the popup. Also they sometimes just pop up with the end program for IE.
my computer is definitely a lot slower now...
This annoying but I am worried that it may be a virus.

The MAIN PROBLEM is that windows security alert icon keeps showing up now in the lower right corner. It says that windows automatic updates are turned off.
The problem is that it won't turn on automatic updates, i event tried going to Control Panel then System.

I googled these problems and I thought maybe i had a Vundo virus.
so i got VundoFix and HijackThis and ran both on my computer, but VundoFix did not scan anything bad and i am not sure what my HijackThis log tells me.

the log is below:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

To start I've scanned my computer about 12 times with bit defender and malwarebytes. Plus super anti spyware no viruses or spyware/ adware where found just cookies.

nvidia geforce 3gb 660 ti evga
1. Screen Tearing, while gaming I notice horizontal flickering lines in the graphics. I've tried turning on v-sync and I've tried the adapive mode in nvidia control panel. Also tried using v-sync in the visual menu of the game its self. yet nothing works. Still screen tearing.

2. MICROSOFT WINDOWS 8.1 PRO 64-bit - I'll get a (POP-UP) in the right hand corner of the task bar. Saying to turn on Windows Update because its off for some reason. So I do that, then 10 secs later it pops up again asking the same thing. I've tried all the trouble shooting programs and options to fix windows update none really work some say they fix 2 things one says it fixes like 4 or 5 things. I also tried rebuilding the update services thinking its corrupted but that did not solve the issue.

3. Just like the update error I get a (POP-UP) saying I need to verify my Microsoft password. And I did but it still pops up. So I changed my password and yes it still pops up saying I need to verify my password to my Microsoft account.

Could anybody help me with this?

Answer:Screen Tearing, Auto updates turn off, windows keeps asking for account password.

Does anybody have any knowledge on this. I cant get Microsoft Support to work and nobody seems to know what I'm talking about anywhere else.. If anybody could help me that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Answer:How to turn on Windows Security Center Service?

In order to start the Windows Security Center service, go to Services on your local computer and start the Security Center service from there.
To do that, type 'services' in the Start search box and hit enter. From the list of services find 'Security Center'. Click on the link on the left that says "Start the service". This should start the service, but if this does not work, please revert back
here. Hope it helps!

You mean the service isn't listed under services.msc ?

Anyways, Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

For whatever reason Vista has decided to turn off it's firewall. I've tried to turn it back on but it says "Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall". I then try to click on the link that says "Turn on Windows Firewall manually", and once inside it says that windows firewall is "on".

Despite any of this, I constantly get security warnings that my firewall is down. Is this something I should worry about? Could this be something to do with malware or is Vista just acting screwy again?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I should probably note that this all happen once I tried to upgrade my virus protection software, after all the fuss and trouble I had with installing and then uninstalling it, I gave up, got my money back and went with a trial version of ESET software, which doesn't have a firewall. Trend Micro also messed with my internet connection and Firefox now loads super slow.

I believe I finally deleted all of the trend micro software install but my firewall is still acting freaky.

halp!

Hello,
Recently I got a Antivirus Antispyware virus on my computer, I ran Rkill and then Malwarebytes and it found the virus and I removed it. However now my Windows 7 Security Center firewall and my McAfee firewall will not turn on. With my Windows 7 Security center, when I try and turn it on it prompts me with a message that says 'Action center cannot turn firewall on, turn windows firewall on manually' so I click on that and I click the recommended settings and it gives me a message saying 'Windows firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070422'. My McAfee fire wall will turn on for a second and then automatically turn off. I have tried many things and seeked for many solutions but so far none of them have worked. Some advice would be wonderful, Thanks!

Hi everyone. Here is my problem - I'll include all the details I can.

I'm running Win 7 64 bit home premium on a Sony Vaio VPCEB11FM laptop.
Yesterday I did a Windows Update and when I restarted I saw the problem start.
First I was having a SmartWi configuration utility problem that popped up twice on startup. Then I saw a pop up that states: oobefcdregistration has stopped working

I installed Malware Bytes and did both that and McAfee scans which both came up with nothing. System restore wouldn't work saying there was a transient error. Suddenly McAfee stopped working. I tried reinstalling but it was giving me nothing but problems. McAfee tech support seems to have fixed the problem, but a few viruses kept popping up (one is ZeroAccess, I can't remember the other one). I was also able to do a system restore in safe mode but it seems like all checkpoints are now gone.

Upon restarting I still got those errors, along with oobesendinfo has stopped working.

I disabled the smartwi utility on startup and now that error as well as the oobesendinfo has stopped working both stopped (but the other oobefcdregistration still pops up).

Now I noticed that my Windows Security Center Service is disabled. When I click for it to turn on it says "The Windows Security Center can't be started." It's also not listed in the services.msc

I tried the system file checker which said it fixed some errors, but apparently not, since upon restart the problem is still there!
I've also checke... Read more

Answer:Windows Security Center won't turn on (and isn't listed)

Will you please try and run a system restore back to a date and time prior to when you installed the program that prompted McAfee to say you had a virus.
To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click next.
3. In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click next.

I was running Kaspersky Internet Security 2015.

I uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller.

On Startup, Windows Security Center reported Firewall was off.

There was no internet access.

When I attempted to start the Firewall, I received the message:

"We're sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall (etc.)"

I got a screenshot of "Security Center" which had references to:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (Uninstalled as reported using "Advanced" Scan option)
and
PC Cleaner Pro (Uninstalled many moons ago)

I ran Malwarebytes which reported three (03) references to "PUP" files.

I removed those files.

I installed the latest version of Norton Security

Norton reported "Downloader.Upatre" and removed it along with "reimage5repair.exe" (PUA.Gen.3)

Internet access has returned, although I had to manually reset some internet options related to connection properties so they would behave as before.

Security Center opens now with references to Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus, but I continue to wonder whether all is OK since I don't think any of these operations actually found the cause of the strange behaviour.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for more investigation(s)?

I recently downloaded the Sims 3 Pets from Origin. Think it's possibly not a coincidence that when I searched through the similar topics for the virus that people had the Sims 3 in their files. I checked the file location for something MalwareBytes picked up and it was created the day I downloaded this game. I can't seem to get rid of this virus. Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Firewall and Windows Update will not turn on. When I scan with M Security Essentials and with M Security Scanner it gets to a certain point and then comes up saying there is a critical error and the laptop will restart in one minute. What can I do to get rid of this virus? I've uninstalled M Security Essentials now and have installed MalwareBytes. My details are:

There are three files inside:

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

Once it's identified it, it says it urgently needs to restart.

Microsoft Security Essentials identified it as Win64/Sirefef.B

It sounds like you have an infection that is preventing the services from starting. Restart in Safe Mode with Networking and scan with MBAM and Combofix.

Hi, hopefully someone can help and advise how I overcome this problem.  I successfully registered for windows 10 upgrade which has been downloaded to my PC but I'm not in the position to install the new Windows. However I still want to install the recent windows 7 updates which came in on the 8th September. How can I do this with out installing Windows 10.

Answer:Windows 7 Security Updates

Hello.  I am still on Windows 7 as well.  What I have been doing, with both the August and September "Black Tuesday" Windows updates, was/is go to the Optional Updates section and uncheck Windows 10 update, then I go to the Important updates and check all of the Windows 7 updates and install them.  I have not had any issues.  It has worked both times.

I am hanging off on doing the Windows 10 update for now, waiting for it to become a bit more stable, even though I have "reserved" my copy.

Hope this helps, and have a great day.

Before I did a clean installation my computer made a screeching noise during operation. Like a jet engine at full revs. After installation it was running at a low noise level. Then I clicked on automatic installation of windows and security updates. Every day at 10pm these updates are being installed, and the noise level just goes up and up? Any ideas around this? Do I need al these updates? If not, how can I get rid of them? It sounds as if more power is needed by the system after each batch of updates installed. When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Answer:Are Windows and security updates really necessary?

I would say the critical updates are definitely needed. You may want to set it so THAT is the only updates you get. Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions 7 Golds

I just recently upgraded to Windows 7 Pro...

Somewhere I heard that MS Security Updates for Win 7 Pro must be acquired via
some kind of circuitous method, as opposed to just a direct download--is this true?

I tried to get MS security updates for my authentic copy of Win 7 Pro, and the procedure
just stalled....

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me/ point me in the right direction what caused microsoft to release so many security updates across all systems on Wednesday?

I have heard that these were triggered because of a new virus or similar and I have been having issues with my pc(s) for a few weeks now, so I thought I may have picked up the problem pre update...

I'll post my issue with the PC's in the network forum if you are interested.

Thanks in advance.

Laptop downloads and installs 32 bit files OK but stops- after starting- the 64 bit ones with the error message 800BO100.
Running Windows 7 and wanting to install SP1.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Answer:Windows Security Updates

800BO100 Usually relates to your firewall blocking the update.
Try disabling the firewall while you download the update.
