Applications downloading on their own, slow moving, and VERY slow start up

Question: Applications downloading on their own, slow moving, and VERY slow start up

I'm a complete noob. All I know is that when I search on my own, I find a bunch of strange files in my C:
like "xcrashdump DAT file" and "VETlog.dmp"

I ran the HJT scan and the log was

Preferred Solution: Applications downloading on their own, slow moving, and VERY slow start up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Hi all,
This has become a very annoying problem, which has me foxed. Any gurus out there??
XP SP3 with all the updates.
Athlon 64 X2, 2Gb
Never had performance issues with this m/c.
On a full system boot, boots fine, login is fine.
When I open apps, the system just sits and waits, upto and around 10mins.
Its not hung, as many other things work fine.
Apps that have this 'wait': Firefox, Chrome, Thunderbird, SuperAntiSpyware, W.MediaPlayer
Apps that do not have this wait (slower than normal, but only 1-2secs wait): KMplayer, CCleaner, Word, PPt, Excel, and many of the Windows tools (ie start menu, cmd, cntrl panel, etcetc.
This is within the past 2 weeks. Cant be precise as I normally standby overnight.
If I use the machine normally, then close every App, and then standby, then every app opens at normal speed.
So it is first time use for apps after a full re-boot.
Using task manager, during this wait period, I see
memory around 300Mb/2892Mb
Cpu usage 1% and stable
CPU process usage, system idle 99% and stable
The only clue I can offer in this wait period is 'page faults' and PF delta, which has modest and intermittent activity for jqs and avast. Climbing slowly to about 1m each.
Then the system bursts into life, all as normal.
So whats changed in the last 2 weeks?
Nothing major.
I can recall auto updates to Windows, Avast, SAS, Adobe, AdobeAir, and maybe others.
I have 11 restore points in the last 2 weeks.
But I dont want to blindly step back through them without knowing what/... Read more

Answer:Applications VERY slow to start after re-boot

Hi jai not a guru but muddle through with the help of this website like most of us. As you say this problem would be easier to understand if the cpu was running at a high percentage. You could try running 'Prism Hud' a freebie from cnet.com which shows ontop layer of screen what is occurring on your computer at anytime. Download and run it. This would give you an understanding of what is running. A good diagnostic starting point. It indicates current use of cpu, memory, hard disk volume, faults etc. It also indicates what program is loading up and shows if it sticks on a program, then that is a possible culprit for the problem. I wouldn't be surprised if it is firewall/anti virus related in which case an uninstall/reinstall may be required. Before you start the above just try running Ccleaner in safemode with networking and restart normally.

My computer is running very slowly, especially on start-up and when opening applications. Once my browser finally opens, I usually don't have problems browsing the internet, but even a basic operation like emptying the recycle bin takes 10 secs or more, opening app such as Windows Media Player, 30 secs or more, etc. Computer is only a few months old and was running fine until about 1 month ago. I have tried eliminating unneeded programs from startup option in system config, without improvement. Have 4GB of RAM anyway, with few programs, so don't think that was the issue. Have also done a disc cleanup/defrag. Malwarebytes can find no problems. Nor can my antivirus program, PCcillan. I have created system restore points several times, but they are deleted once comp is re-started.

Below and attached are my DDS logs. The GMER rootkit found no errors.

Appreciate any help.

Answer:Slow Slow Slow Browser, Applications Failing

How long has it been since Windows was installed? Have you done any regular file maintenance, like deleting old files you don't need anymore, deleting temp files, uninstalling programs you don't use anymore, deleting months-old system restore points, etc, and then running scandisk, and lastly, running defrag? Maybe it's not a virus. You may just be running out of room on your hdd.

Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Make sure that MGTools.exe is directly in the root folder of your Windows Boot drive, usually C:\ (Do not have it to your desktop)

Run the new C:\MGTools.exe and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip that it produces.

I don't know if this has something to do with the OS itself, but definitely not hardware related. I checked everything, RAM, the Motherboard and esp. the Harddrive, and all are in working order. Even openning file-explorer and Recycle-Bin would take a anywhere from 4-10 seconds. This happens after everyboot (with Fastboot enabled or disabled), but after a while everything would open almost instantly, except for apps like Adobe Photoshop and Acronis True Image. Is this normal, or something I should worry about?

First I would like to say that I have never posted to a forum before, so please be patient with any 'newbie' mistakes I might make. Secondly, and most importantly, the problem:For months now I have been experiencing a lot of odd behavior. When I boot up, whether it is from scratch, hibernation, or standby, It may take up to 5 minutes to get to the log on screen. A lot of times though, 40% of the time or so, it will just freeze with a blank screen; never even achieving the windows loading screen. This has become very infuriating, as the only way to get anywhere is to shut it off the hard way (pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds) and trying again. I run a HP Pavalion dv4000, all stock. It's less than a year old. Here's what I've tried thus far:I have been runing Norton Antivirus regularly, Ad-aware, AVG Root kit, Spybot S&D, and ccleaner (always creating a restore point and never having to use it) for years. I have tried scans in both regular and safe mode and I have tried doing everything with the system restore disabled; still the same problem. Truth be told, I'm starting to think it isn't malware at all, which isn't a fun idea. I tried doing some research with the startup programs from the db here at BC and stopped a couple of the unnecessary processes, which helped some, but didn't rectify the situation. Any help would be appreciated. Here's my current HTJ log. Also, if someone is able to help me out, I am very interested in learning why cert... Read more

Hello drunkleI will be helping you with your problems. Thanks for being patient. I need to see another HijackThis log, but you need to extract (unzip) HijackThis first. Otherwise the backups made when items are fixed won't be secure. The easiest way to accomplish this is to reinstall and delete any copies of HijackThis.zip you have saved. Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:HijackThis_sfx downloadSave HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut). Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Hello, Tech Guy Forums!

I've got a Compaq Presario 2410 laptop running Windows XP Home Ed. (SP2) that's seen a gradual decline in performance over the past several months. Boot-up time has increased to about 5 minutes now, applications load very slowly, even alt-tabbing between two windows can take me on the order of 15 seconds. I've been running Lavasoft's Adaware compulsively, but I'm concerned that it's missing something that's causing the slowdown. I am not seeing an popup windows, but the processor seems to be working quite hard even when no programs are open.

Also, I've had a Windows Update yellow shield popping up regularly for awhile now, which is trying to install Office XP Service Pack 3, but it gets halfway through and asks for the Office XP CD, which I misplaced during my last move across the country. Office works fine (except for the overall slowdown). I have no idea if the update I can't get and the slowdown are related.

I've attached a Hijackthis log in the hope that someone here might be able to help me locate the source of my problems. I'm not literate enough to interpret everything in the log, but I do know better than to start deleting system files willy-nilly. Any help given is thoroughly appreciated!

- Tom

It takes forever to pull up Interent Explorer... and still everything is very slow in terms of reaction time to my clicking/typing. If I leave my computer on overnight, it takes a few minutes it seems to "warm up" once I try to access an application.

Any suggestions? I know this is a vague description. Thanks.

System: Windows 7

So pretty much on start up.  My computer would ether freeze or load slow where only the mouse can move.  Right clicking something or trying to open anything, including task menu would just cause the loading circle to appear.  I can still move the mouse but can't click.  Sometimes it would take around 20 minutes for the computer to recover form the slow down or I'll have to reset.

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting up and I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs. If it does respond (such as clicking on internet explorer), upon closing out the program it will not respond again without a manual shut down.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal settings". Takes longer than it usually would.

#3 Shut down is slower or will freeze. All desktop items and desktop will be clear, leaving just background, as usual before a shut down, and will freeze leaving the arrow cursor still there. Sometimes it can get past this after a wait and get stuck on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen. And never shut down. This requires a manual shut down by pressing the PC's button.

#4. Start menu ico... Read more

Hi all,
I have 2 computers, a Dell laptop and a Dell Desktop, they are recently new, have been working fine, they both have Vista. Just as of late last night the internet connections have been poor, either not connecting at all or slow. I have AVG 8.0 but it has not found any viruses....any help would be appreciated. thanks,

Answer:Solved: Internet connection slow, downloading slow

Hi Dano.
Are both pc's hardwired or one wireless through your router?
Are both slow at the same time?
Have you tried eliminating the router and hardwiring one pc directly through the modem.(will require a power on reset of the modem)?

Do a speed check
www.speakeasy.net/speedcheck
Any recent hardware/software changes?
Any error msgs ?

Is this cable or DSL?
Knowing some of these things will assist the techs here to delve further into the problem.

I have a client that has to regularly move emails from his inbox to a PST on his company shared drive. Moving files under 100kbs seem fine but this client needs to regularly move emails upwards of 5Mbs in size to his PST on the share. When he does move these files his outlook gets hung up to the point of completely freezing everything on his computer just to move the email. It can take upwards of 10-20 minutes to move one file.

The troubleshooting I have performed:
-I tried setting his network adapter to 100 Mbs Full Duplex, didn't appear to do anything
-Speed test his connection, he is running about 1.2-1.5 Mb down and 1.5+ Upload, so no issue there.
-I tested moving a 15Mb file to his shared drive, this seemed to be uploading fine, after a minute or 2 it was nearly half done, so this leads me to believe the issue is more pertaining to outlook.
-I then killed his outlook profile, recreated him a new one and remapped the PSTs.
-Had him test moving files again, and the same issue is still occurring.
-The client also reports this was not always an issue and had recently started happening.

At this point I am stuck and would like any advise anyone may have to offer for a solution.

Answer:Outlook - Moving emails to a PST on a share moving very SLOW! Help Please

Can someone please help me analyse this log? It appears that I had the Virtumonde virus which spyboy detected and VundoFix virus (which Avast detected and removed as I reboot) since last Wednesday, May 14th, there was no system restore date available at the time so since then I've run Spybot, Spydoctor, Avast, cleaned out startup, removed useless programs, ran diskcleanup and defrag, xspy and still my applications (especially MoZILLA & INTERNET EXPLORER) are crawling at startup and I don't understand why?? I am trying to save all my files instead of reinstalling Windows XP. I would appreciate any help from people with knowledge of these log files.thank you!!! thank you!!! so much for any help.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 10:54:10 PM, on 5/19/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\avast\aswUpdSv.exeC:\Program Files\avast\ashServ.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\CTsvcCDA.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\tcpsvcs.exeC:\... Hello southflgirl,We need to create a Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) Log Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from one of the links below and save to your Desktop. Primary Mirror Secondary Mirror DSS will do the following: 1. Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista. 2. Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives. 3. Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review. 4. Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using Deckard's System Scanner. 1. Close all applications and windows. 2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. 3. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious. 4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad: main.txt <-- Will be maximized extra.txt <-- Will be minimized 5. If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. 6. Please copy (<Control>+C) and paste (<Control>+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that DSS is trying to access the Internet; espec... Read more

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me.  My computer starts kind of slow, and I feel like it is running a little slow also.  I thought it would be a good idea to un-check some of the start-up things after going into misconfig, but I do not know what any of the items are.  Is there an easy way to make my computer start faster.  Also, when I am on the computer, I hear the tower making noise like it is doing something, as though there was some kind of background process going on that I don't know about.  I am running McAfee and I am pretty sure I do not have any kind of virus.  Please help.

Answer:start slow, runs slow and makes noise when I am simply typing on computer

Oh Yeah, I am running windows XP that came with the computer a year ago when I bought it.  It has an 80 gig hard drive and I think 1 gig of memory.  Thanks in advance to anyone's response.

OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3000+, x86 Family 15 Model 44 Stepping 2
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 1983 Mb
Graphics Card: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP, 64 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 71523 MB, Free - 40084 MB;
Motherboard: LENOVO, K8M800-M3, ,
Antivirus: None

I have Norton Antivirus installed, which challenged the above TSG SysInfo download, but I downloaded this utility anyway. Also, in addition to the above problems, my Task Manager often shows 100% CPU usage, which causes my computer to freeze and hang often. I have run Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, ran Window Defender full scans, ran my default Norton Antivirus full scan. My My Computer program shows many red circles with white crosses and yellow triangles with black exclamation points enclosed.

I think my computer is loaded down with a lot of unnecessary junk, infected junk, and I do not know what a lot of that junk is, since the short-hand codes are not very descriptive. I need to know what processes are safe and necessary and what ones I can uninstall without harming other processes.

Thank you for your time and help. I sure do need it. S-Pie

Hi there, please can you help?
I realize this BSOD might be a commonly reported problem but the issues here seem not to have been addressed specifically by other threads so I hope I haven't opened a new thread unnecessarily. Anyhow, here goes...
Various pc problems have arisen since coming home from holiday last week:

Background: 2 months ago: installed samsung SSD to run a new install of Win 7 64bit - on Asus P5NE-SLI with newly installed AHCI controller card. Successful after some troubleshooting; ran fine for several weeks.

PC left for 2 weeks while on holiday: on return a few days ago pc had problems on start-up: blank screen; no/slow start-up then BSOD attached.
The problem now is specifically a start-up issue: very slow to boot windows; if I hit F8 or del then BIOS loads very slowly, if at all; windows loads but freezes part way through. It DOES eventually load but it doesn't seem stable: yesterday the pc restarted unprompted.
The clock time was incorrect by about 20minutes when I got home from holiday (cmos battery?)

So far, I have (in chronological order)...
cleaned out dust, checked for shorts and loose wires
run Prime95 stress tests: seems OK - no crashes; Speed Fan recorded CPU temps of >50C before I closed the program. On idle CPU is now 37C; GPU 47C
memtest run overnight: 7 passes no errors;
updated GPU driver; run Furmark GPU stress test: all fine!
searched for other driver updates - none required (at least through windows)
run Sams... Read more

Answer:Slow start-up; crawls into BIOS setup; then slow to load windows

The problem is with your usb hub, or quite possibly a usb device that is plugged into it.
The fault is clearly sourced in the usb system though.
You may try updating your chipset drivers.
try rebooting with nothing plugged in but mouse and kb.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.

TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

A little while ago I put a new 1TB hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5050 to replace the old 500GB one. I used the Windows backup program on the computer and the information on the Windows website. I transferred the system image to a backup hard drive, then installed it onto the new hard drive. I've tried a disc cleanup, defragmenting the hard drive, and I've run all the diagnostics that Windows has and still this thing is SLOW!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, my computer has an Intel Core I3 processor. I still have the old hard drive with everything still on it and I still have the system image on the backup hard drive. Please if anyone can help, I would GREATLY appreciate it, this thing is driving me nuts (My OLD Inspiron 1420 with a Core2 Duo processor runs circles around my N5050!)

My Windows XP computer has slowed down within the past month or so. The computer, an eMachines T6528 Athlon 64 3500+ with 512 mb ram which is shared, while certainly not a power burner, always started quickly and was quick to get to web sites. I use it mainly for email (Outlook Express) and browsing the internet (IE7). I have defragged the C: drive and cleaned out any unused applications - no help. Since my Trend Micro Internet Security subscription was expiring and since the computer was already really slow I changed security to a CA Suite provided by my ISP. That did nothing for the speed.

It starts very slowly, opens programs very slowly, and takes forever to load a web page.

The following HJT log follows, as does a start-up list. Please make this machine run faster.

Answer:Not Again! Slow PC, Slow Start Up, Slow Outside of Internet

Hello justanotherguy,

You continue to get reinfected because you are still running unpatched XP.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from.

My Toshiba Tecra laptop 8100 with XP is Slow/Slow/Slow!

When turning on, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to settle down. Once it stops grinding and I try to start any application -- such as Internet Exployer, it takes another 5 to 10 minutes. I have Nortons 360 and another anti-virus application that gives me the indication that all is O.K. How can I speed this machine up.

I know nothing about computers so please help!!
My computer is really slow during start up, it spends alot of time on the windows start up and the welcome section, then when it reaches my desktop it takes a long time for it to completely finish loading. For some reason a window called System 32 is popping up when windows starts. I have tried 'msconfig' to make the startup faster but it doesnt work. Also, my computer keeps blinking even when I'm not doing anything on the computer. Also, now it is freezing more frequently. Before it did not freeze as much, it somtimes freezes during start up and sometimes freezes randomly out of no where.
I have ran spybot and avast! but it says that my computer is clean. I have also used CCleaner and PerfectDisk but those did not help either.
Anyone has any idea on how I can fix this?
Thanks

Welcome to the forums Candiehearts!

I am guessing you have some sort of malware undetected by your antivirus and antispyware tool, since there are many symptoms of an infection. But do this anyways, just to see: as the experts say, please post a HijackThis log in this forum; please read this first.

Hello,

I was here a few months ago, with my computer/firefox running slow.

I've had malwarebytes anti malware  running ever since.
A couple weeks ago the computer has literally come to grinding halt.
When I start the computer it takes a couple of minutes to go from the "Starting Windows" screen to the Windows login screen.
From there it take another 3-5 minutes to boot up. I have Soluto installed and I watch all the programs that are being started during boot up and how much extra time has elapsed for everything to load.

I've run spybot search and destroy,  Avast, eset, and SuperAntispyware and nothing has been detected.
All programs have a large lag time from when i dbl click the icons to start them.  They run slow, I type something and there is a delay before I see it on the screen. Also I'm always seeing the "not responding" message.

Here is the speccy link:

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/MzcuTBZF3HP1gYFSP85FccO

I also have the hijackthis and minitoolbox report.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!

Hey,

Out of the blue, my computer started getting slow. Sometimes its ok, and then it will be on the verge of freezing.. then get itself back together. I realized, when I start up, it takes FOREVER. It also shows this screen I have never seen before. Its completely black, and has a line of grey rectangles from side to side... and slowly loads across. When it is finally finished(10-15 minutes) it will slowly start up in regular fashion. Any ideas? I will attach a hijack this in my next post.

Thanks Much.

I have tried numerous tips and have installed registry mechanic to see if that helps - anyone any ideas?

How to use MSCONFIG in Windows XP Here is how to use MSCONFIG in Windows XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up. Disabling these programs will help your computer boot faster and crash less. 1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.2. Click the Startup tab.3. Click the Restore Startup Programs option.4. Select the programs that you want to restore, and then click OK.5. Restart the computer.NOTE: This option is not available if Windows XP Setup did not disable any programs from loading during the startup process. Good luck

Hello Bleeping staff,

I suspect I have another virus. My laptop is extremely slow to start up these days, and also quite slow in opening most software or even the internet. I can't even put my pc into hibernate, because I'm scared it won't 'wake up' afterward. It takes at least a few minutes for the black screen to turn to the welcome screen, and a few days ago I had to reboot because it never did turn on properly. I have defrag set to run weekly, so that's not an issue. I've only used half the memory my computer has, so I doubt that's it, either.

I don't see anything too unusual in processes (task manager). That leaves me with a virus or malware, or maybe a hardware issue, right? I'm using a Gateway NV57H13u, 4 GB memory, intel core i3-2310M, running Windows 7.

I have Avast, which never seems to find much when I run a scan, although I do find it useful for blocking suspicious websites from popping up. I ran Malware bytes, which found a few minor threats but didn't fix the problem. I still have most of the other software I can download from ya'll, but I'm not sure where to start first.

Any advice?

Kind regards,
Heather

Running xp pro, 1 gig memory, 160 gig hard drive partitioned. Takes about 8-10 minutes to boot. Sometimes the programs will start

right up and then at other times the hard drive runs like something else is running for quite a while before the program starts.

Have run reg. mechanic, reg cure, pc on point, ccleaner, etc but it still happens. Task manage doesn't show anything strange running. No

viruses or spyware. Think something might be starting but can't find out what.

Help! Thanks.

Here is the log from hijackthis.--Just took 1 1/2 minutes for my docs to open to retrieve the log file.

Hi bleepingcomputer people! I registered because I'm in need of your help (and I hope this is the right section).

From a few days, there's a little problem happening in my computer. First off, I'm using WINDOWS 7, and my pc specs (copy pasting what I see in the properties): 10 GB of RAM, intel Core i3 2100 CPU 3,10 GHz, 64 bit

It has always been good, I mostly use the pc for music reproduction and production. But weirdly, some day some applications started to open really slowly.
An example: when I open Foobar for the first time after I boot up my PC, it is REALLY slow and the window appears 15-25 seconds later and then I can use the program regularly. Also, after I opened it the first time and close it, and then open it again, it works as normal (very fast start). The same happens with other small applications; I have for example Advanced Renamer (that I use for renaming songs) or other really small .exes

I didn't notice this happening with folders, internet or other things. I highly doubt it's a virus, I have TinyWall running and MSE, and I rarely get viruses because I hardly surf the web or download stuff from P2P or torrent services.

What could be the issue? It's not a "serious" issue, but it's certainly super annoying

Hope you have an idea of why PC started this behaviouring, and hope you can help me

See ya around

Answer:Some applications are slow to open

Hey! Inital boots can be slow, but you may have a damaged HDD. This generally means slowly your PC will crawl to a point where it takes 10 minutes to open a video. If you feel like it is slowing down more and more, definietly copy everything over immediately.

I recently setup a vpn for some of our satellite offices to be able to use a software package called Medisoft at our home office. The setup was successful and we are able to connect the only problem is that when you use the software on the client side its extremely slow and takes a LONG time to query the database/print etc. I did a test on the internet connection from the server and I'm getting 1.5mpb down and a meager .2 mbps up. In anyones opinion would upgrading this line to say a 10/2 fix this problem or could it possibly be a function of the software? Thank you for reading.

Answer:VPN setup, applications slow

There are a number of factors for the applications running slow on the client side. The first one of course would be your Upload and Download speed for the Internet Connections at both locations. The other variable is that VPN's use encryption. This also slows things down as well. The ISP connection you have is extremely sub standard for doing business related network Traffic. My home ISP is 5 times faster than that. You may want to talk to your ISP's for the home and statellite offices and get faster Internet connections on both ends and look at getting Symmetrical bandwidth.

I have a high-end desktop and an ultrabook, both of which run Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I have set up a RDP connection from the laptop to the desktop, and I want to use a certain application (UDK Editor) over the internet when I am away from home.

Now, in general, the frame rate and response of the RDP is poor when I run intensive applications such as 3ds Max or SolidWorks, but these programs are still usable. They just have poor frame rate (20~40 FPS) and a very slight delay in mouse response.

However, the UDK Editor program I am most interested in using is basically unusable because it takes several seconds to respond to mouse clicks and the rate at which the screen refreshes when running this program is truly awful. Everything is dramatically slower in this application for no discernible reason.

UDK is a very RAM intensive application, but I have no idea why this should matter as my desktop is more than capable of running all its features, and it has no problem streaming over applications such as SolidWorks and 3ds Max which are also rather intensive. In addition, it seems to me that it shouldn't actually matter how intensive any application is over the RDP so long as the computer running it can handle it.

I have tried to increase performance by reducing the colors to 15 bit and disabling all aesthetic features such as desktop background, window animations, and persistent bitmap caching. These are not enough to make UDK usable. I have also set RDP's autotuning to "h... Read more

Answer:RDP Extremely Slow Only on Certain Applications

Try teamviewer. It's free. RDP can be very slow in my experience. It's not good for intensive apps.
Third party programs always worked better for me in terms of ease of connection, encryption, and speed.

Another program I would consider is splashtop. Its very fast and might give you the speed you need. Unfortunately you have to pay for it.

i recently began to experience slowing typing in all apps on my laptop

the typing speeds are fine at the log in screen (when i type my password)

i already checked msconfig for PCMService.exe, it's not there so that shouldn't be the problem

my system performance is how it has always been, i tried to play a large movie and it worked fine.

as i type about 5% of the time typing speeds are fine. sometimes if i type a long phrase and wait it will quickly fill in what i have typed after stalling for a second.

another forum post i read suggested deleting the keyboard driver and let it install again but i haven't tried that yet.

i have windows xp sp2

Until yesterday both my computers had been working quite well.

Yesterday one of them became very slow on the internet.

Both machines have IE8, Chrome and Firefox. All three browsers on the affected machine are slow to connect to the default Google page and to any subsequent pages I connect to.

Belarc's system details of the affected machine are in the attached jpg.

My i.s.p's (TalkTalk) on-line speed measurements made yesterday evening were about 4Mb/s download, and a little less than a 10th of that upload.
Measured this afternoon they were 1.5Mb/s download and about a 10th of that figure for upload.

The router speed is 12.9Mb/s

Figures for the unaffected machine (Shuttle) measured this afternoon were 10Mb/s download and 790kb/s upload.

Router speed 12.9Mb/s

The affected machine connects to the router over a l.a.n. through the a.c. supply. The icons for the l.a.n. say that its speed is 100Mb/s.

All applications on the affected machine (H.P.) seem to be working fine.

The other machine connected to the router with an ethernet cable and is working normally. Nothing untoward noticed.

I have run Maware Byte's free program and Spybot Search and Destroy Nothing found.

And ESET's on-line scanner, Trend Micro's HouseCall and Panda's on-line scanners found nothing nasty either.

So, the problem is very slow internet activity on either of the three browsers on only one of the machines.

Can anyone ... Read more

Answer:Slow internet but applications seem ok.

Just off the top of my head:

Have you tried changing the patch cord between your PC and the powerline adapter? (this was the culprit with a friends set up)

Resetting the adapter and if no joy then moving it to another outlet are things I'd try as well.

Have you aquired any new electrical equipment, or moved any equipment that might be causing the adapter interference?

Answer:All Applications Load Very Slow

Hello klink1956 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

For performance issues I would suggest posting a question in the XP forum and have them do a deeper check for what processes are using the most resources. Sometimes a program might have a runaway process and everything stops until it finishes running. Let them know that you have been to this forum and no malware was found.

Cheers.

Hi,

My laptop was running smooth, but after returning home after 2 wks from out of town, my laptop takes around 8 minutes to completely load up. Whenever I click on any application, it takes 5 minutes to open up. All applications run really slow, videos on youtube skip even after they have completely loaded and when I play songs on my itunes they skip horribly and pause, and when I type on microsoft word theres a long delay in the words I type appearing on screen. I have over 20GB of memory available on both my C and D drive. I ran all scans on Norton 360 which I purchased after this started, but it didnt detect anything and my computer is still really slow.

I's greatly appreciate any help anyone on here could offer me. I ran a scan of Hijackthis, let me know if you want me to post it.

Thanks

Well, first of all I would like to say Hi to everybody... I am new to all of this and I have tons of questions I have no idea where to start.

My pc rebooted a few weeks ago, since then it has been very, very slow (over 50% of the processing resources for the simplest of tasks) I checked the processes and I have some suspicious ones (like csrss.exe or smss.exe), but when I do a little research on them, some pages say that they are Windows processes and they are OK, and other websites say they are powerful viruses and they will bring about the end of the world! I use Bullgard anti virus, I scan my pc in safe mode with that, also ad aware, i clean the registry with RegSeek, I do all I can think of to get the problem solve, but I get nothing!

I just found out about hijack this and I'm giving it a try, you'll have to excuse me for not trying that earlier, I am almost new to all of this. I was trying to get help from a spanish forum (since english is barely my 2nd lenguage) but I had to jump thrugh a lot of hoops there and I got nowhere. I'm posting my highjackthis post here, any help would much appreciated.

Grateful if anyone can advise on this please as it's driving me mad.
Laptop (Vaio) on XP (4 yrs old) and 2 gb RAM, is just so slow to open any programs, even including IE8, you would think it was going backwards. Even Outlook 2010 or infact any application at all (Word, Excel etc) takes an absolute age to open. Trying to open more than one program is impossible.
I've scanned for malware (& in safe mode), and all clear; done the same with antivirus (no problems); taken the battery out just in case it was this, no problems. Have done a CCleaner, plus reg cleaner session all to no avail. I'm doing a disk clean-up as we speak, but this is also taking ages. When that's done - maybe tomorrow when disk clean up has finished - plan on defragging the hard drive.
Capacity of hard drive is 55 gb, with 14 gb free.
This all started last week; no new software installed and regularly update and scan with malware bytes anti malware, super anti spyware, and also avast.
If I start the machine in safe mode (which reduces number of drivers) then it seems ok.
Left the machine on all last night and tried to open Outlook this morning and all was ok. Also able to open IE8 and other programs, so it's as if it needs an excessive amount of time to start to work 'normally'. Maybe the hamster inside needs feeding more often? I shut it down then tried a restart, then the old problem came back - ultra slow.
Is the machine knacked, or are there other steps I can take to resolve this? Grateful for any ... Read more

I run IE 7 on Windows XP and I am on DSL on my desktop.  For some reason every time I log on to IE 7 it takes 30 seconds to a minute for each page to load.  At the same time my laptop at the house only takes 5 seconds or less to load each page so I know it is not the Internet provider.  Seven days ago it stormed real bad and my machine lost power acouple of times.  Could this have affected my system?  The guys at Circuit City tell me that I should back everything up and use my recovery CD.  But surely there has to be a better way than that to fix my problem.  What about the system restore?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to help a friend with his dell pc. He has had problems with fake antivirus, spyware ect. All of those have been cleaned. Now the pc will boot and start up normal; however any application you try to open takes forever. When you open a browser, it takes 15 to 20 seconds to open. Once open it will move around on the internet fast enough, still too slow for me but fast enough. Opening word takes forever and so on. I ran autorun and turned off about all I can?.no change. All scans are clean now. He works from this pc and it is so slow that he can?t get anything done. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya, Recently ive had problems with my computer with things like spywarequake and virusblast being found on them, after reading some of the forums advice on these, i downloaded programs such as smitfraudfix and SmitRem, and then going over these has seemed tro have sorted the problem out! Ive scanned my computer with Windows Defender and it states that everything is fine and i am free from any malware, but whilst using other programs these programs state that i hve some trojans in somewhere. I'd like to know if my computer is disease Free...Heres a post of MY HJT logLogfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 14:15:24, on 10/07/2006Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exeC:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\guard.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodServic... Never had something this intense before. I've got multiple chrome and explorer processes running in the background, and can only access the internet with explorer, but very slow in page loading.

I ran the read and run me first, but could not run mbam. The process opened but the application would never open. TDDskiller would not run, used fixtdds and nothing was found. The trial period for hitman pro is expired, so I bought a license, but the key will not activate, just keeps thinking. So hitman would not run either.

Looked at the hijacking/redirection thread and followed those steps. Ran jrt and hijack this opened, saying I had a lot of hijacked domains. Never had hijacked domains so this is new to me.

Attached are all the logs that could run. Thank you for any help.

Answer:Slow internet and applications not opening

Re run RogueKiller and have it fix these entries on the files tab:

[PUP][Folder] C:\ProgramData\{D76294E6-03B8-4971-AF2E-3F846161A690} -> Found
[PUP][Folder] C:\ProgramData\{E1ED556E-3EA0-4F44-8BE7-CC5FB0F4B424} -> Found
Follow these instructions to reset your host file:
Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{6F1DB67A-D8D4-4060-960C-958F0C423DB2}]Click to expand...

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.
Reboot the machine.
Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
Now see if you are able to run Malware Bytes and Hitman Pro.

Hey,

My Windows 7 SP1 computer has recently started being very slow. Startup from the password screen takes 2 1/2 to load the desktop. General file management tasks, like viewing, copying, moving, and deleting files operate at normal speed. However, when I do something that Windows has to "look up" i.e, not cached, the entire computer slows to a crawl. The application does open, but I get a lot of 'Not Responding" messages in the title bar as I use the application. There is one external drive connected via USB 2.0. Page file is set to system managed.

Could this be my HDD going? I haven't checked the disk for errors yet, going to do that next.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thank you,

wws

I have a fairly new laptop running XP Pro SP2 1.73GHz dual processor, 1GB RAM , Thunderbird mail client, Browsers: Firefox V 2.0.0.6 & IE V7 and have McAfee AV, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Ad Aware, Windows Defender and COMODO BOClean to keep the system "safe".

I scanned my system with a commercial spyware program which reported 200 malware items but of course wanted me to pay to clean them from the system (which i did not). All my "free" spyware systems report a clean system but it is running quite slow - especially when loading my browser and email. My windows task manager reports about 64 open processes.

I have posted my hijack report if someone could please have a look to see what might be the problem causing the slow processing:

Running Windows XP home.....
Upgraded from WinME.....

Access the internet fine 100mbs LAN connection speed

When opening the network thru Network Neighborhood and viewing workgroup computers, it takes the normal time to respond.
When opening the network thru Applications, such as Excel or AutoCAD, it takes like 3 miniutes before it shows the network. Once you see the network, you are able to access the computers on it just fine.

What could be causing the delay to see the network?

Answer:Network slow only thru Applications not Windows---HELP

Hello TSF.

My laptop is running extremely slowly. Starting up from ShutDown or from Sleep takes awhile longer than usual, and opening any programs/applications is very, very slow. After I've been using the computer for awhile it runs better, but is still very sluggish.

I have done chkdsk, degrag, cleaned out programs (CCleaner) -- nothing has helped. The problems started shortly after I downloaded Inkster, a graphic manipulation software. I have removed that software but it had no effect. I added extra RAM to this computer a few months ago, so that's not the problem.

Below is the DDS report along with the attachment.

Thank you very much for your help with this situation.

Stephan Borau

In the last couple of days, my system is almost completely unresponsive unless started in "safe" mode. Apps either take forever to open or don't open at all, it is impossible to shut the system down without a hard reboot. I ran a complete system scan with Avast! but it reported no infections. Don't believe I've intentionally downloaded anything that would have caused this unless I got a bad update from Windows update, as those are the only recent downloads my system is showing. "HiJack This" and other logs follow. Did not get any kind of rootkit warning form GMES, so there is no "ark.txt" log. At bottom of post is my system info. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Randy Grove

Operating System: Windows 8

Problem:
Chrome took 15 minutes to open then operated normally. Once closed it took 15 minutes to open again. Ran Malwarebytes anti-maleware + Spybot S&D + windows Defender. Nothing came up. Tried to reinstall the browser and it would not allow me to download chrome using any method I could think of. Tried to open windows firewall settings the window took 23 minutes to open. I can run most programs like MS Office Suite, League of Legends and other Browsers relatively fine.

Also one more addition Spybot S&D no longer runs.

Any Suggestions?

Answer:Some applications suddenly running very slow or not at all.

Maybe try Rootkit scans? Also, another tech here suggested trying BitDefender.

My PC has games like GTA San Andreas, Counter Strike 1.3, Warcraft 3 Dota All Stars and Kill Switch. Also, I have applications such as, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Portable, Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash MX, etc. Oftentimes, while playing GTA San Andreas or Warcraft, I am experiencing slow motion movement of my screen. And if I still continue playing, my computer has shutdown, or sometimes, it restarts. I also noticed that my CPU fan is so fast.

Are you familiar with this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Applications running slow, CPU fan is going fast

Could be overheating, check the CPU temps when the machine shuts down.
