Question: Want to fix a crazy problem before it gets Potentially worse. Help please?

I have searched the interwebs and this is the best place I could find. I really hope you guys can help. I read many stickies but it's still probable I'll make a mistake.

Windows Vista
Mozilla Firefox (newest stable version)
McAfee Security Center (newest version)
Comodo Firewall (newest) and Comodo Safesurf v.
The problem stops after I unplug my modem or get to task manager if it loads

Okay, I visited a site I have been to many times before dating back a couple of years. The site now has many ads and such now. When on a page recently something was trying to load the url "" unexpectedly. This caused my browser to go wild and the resources being used in Task Manager went up to the 280k range for Firefox alone. The pdf continued to try to load and everything froze until I unplugged my modem. Then after pressing CTRL+ALt+DLT I got a "failed to something security options" message (not sure exactly). I then pressed again and my task manager came up.

I was able to close the tab which this unauthorized "pdf" was trying to load in afterwards. I shut everything down did scans, cleared browser cookies etc., defragmented. YOU NAME IT I did the basics and everything came back clean. Then I went back to this site to report the issue. Everything was fine until I tried to access a certain thread again. All of a SUDDEN it happened except faster this time. The same url tried to load a PDF into my browser by the time it loaded it was about 12 characters of numbers and letters in the PDF and that's it.

I reported the issue to the site they said they "ran tests but nothing came back, it might be on your end." I went back to cruising on this site and luckily no problems. Then after I thought it was over I went to another site and this page of a PDF was trying to redirect me again. This time it was a new url not I don't know the exact url but it was something like "". The .ru and others were the same.

I fear this might continue or get worse. I'm thinking I should do some of these things:

Uninstall Adobe (but I have so many components like Photoshop, reader etc, which to delete?)
Uninstall browser
Uninstall McAfee (get new programs)

Preferred Solution: Want to fix a crazy problem before it gets Potentially worse. Help please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Want to fix a crazy problem before it gets Potentially worse. Help please?

I've been waiting on this issue patiently but it looks like this place has too many requests right now. Is there somewhere else I can discuss this. Or can someone just check the hijackthis log if my info was too much to read.

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

For no particular reason I decided to have a look at my BIOS setup this afternoon. I wish I hadn't!The CPU temperature is being reported as 151°C!!Now either there's something *seriously* wrong with my motherboard sensors or my computer is about to explode! I fear it may be the latter. The weird thing is that there are absolutely no problems with the system - no freezes or program errors.Am I just being paranoid?

Answer:Potentially serious CPU problem

if your CPU was genuinly running at that temp it would have died. see if there is a BIOS update and see if it solves the problem.

Ok so here is the post. I've had issues on and off for a while with an IRQL crash to blue screen. In the past I've asssumed something overheating so i cleaned the computer of dust and made sure the fans were clean and went on my way.

Recently It's been acting up again and even cleaning it out isn't working. I've also gotten a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error when crashing to the blue screen.

I think it's finally taken it's last breath. Yesterday I could boot the system past the first two screens (bios screens I think) but It would not load up XP. No beep sounds, no crashes, it would display the first screens fine and then just sit on a black screen when windows should be loading.

I looked this up and found it might be some bad RAM so I've tried reseating and moving around the sticks and now it will just stop on the first screen (again I think this is the bios screen) and won't even get to where xp should be loading.

The RAM itself is all Kingston value ram but 2 of the sticks are old and the other 2 are older. I've tried all combinations with the pairs alone, together, in different slots and everytime now it's just booting to the bios screen and stopping.

In the past even just letting it sit for a little while the system would work fine.

Recommend what I should do please, the computer in my sig is what I have now except for the update of a 9800 GT and a same but new hard drive. I'm considering just buying a new processor, motherboard and memory to have an upda... Read more

Answer:Help diagnose this problem (potentially bad ram)

0x4E: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT is possibly the single strongest error code indicating corrupted memory. I speak from experience having had this error code myself and corrupted memory.

If you have corrupted memory no amount of switching around the RAM sticks will help. It can't be fixed, only replaced. Kingston makes great memory and I would be very suprised if they did not exchange your bad RAM for new RAM free of charge.

Have you ever run Memtest before? It is free, perfectly safe, and the good thing is engages almost immediately after boot-up. This is the address: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool (if it doesn't work it is easy to find; if it takes you to any site that requires you to pay -- dont!; this is free). Some advice I give people running the test:

Let it run for a LONG time. The rule is a minimum of 7 Passes; the more Passes after 7 so much the better. There are 8 individual tests per Pass. Many people will start this test before going to bed and check it the next day.

If you have errors you have corrupted memory and it needs to be replaced.

Also, with errors you need to run this test per stick of RAM. Take out one and run the test. Then take that one out and put the other in and run the test. If you start getting errors before 7 Passes you know that stick is corrupted and you don’t need to run the test any further on that stick.

My network is set up as so:

Cable modem in my neighbors apartment

His WiFi router (not sure of model) connected directly to that modem

Cat-6 cable running from Ethernet port of his WiFi router to my apartment

Same Cat-6 cable connected to my Linksys WRT54GL v. 1.1 running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) min

My apartment is served wirelessly by this WRT54GL

My problem is that I can't get port forwarding to work. I've tried w/Tomato Firmware and now DD-WRT with no luck. I have set up port forwarding multiple times in the past w/no problem (different routers, not this one but it's nothing special set up wise). My computers are running Win7 and OSX 10.4.

I've run port tests from various sites and they always say that the port is blocked (connection timed out or refused, message seems to vary). I've tried changing the port numbers, even tested with just port 21 for FTP, and no luck.

My assumption was that being plugged into his WiFi router w/Cat-6 was similar to being connected to a hub but now I'm wondering if it is in fact doing some routing and affecting my port forwarding.

Do I need to do some sort of chained port forward? ie. forward from his router to mine and then to my computers?

Anyone have any ideas? Oh, I should mention that the cable modem only has 1 ethernet port on it so plugging into that is not an option.

Answer:Potentially complicated Port Foward problem...

You're double-NATed. His router is using NAT to connect the Internet to his LAN, then you're doing NAT again to connect your LAN to his LAN. The connections aren't passing from his WAN to LAN, so they're never even getting to your WAN to be forwarded to your LAN. In order for port forwarding to work on your router, all of those forwards would also need to be set up on his router, forwarding to whatever IP your router is getting on its WAN interface. This also means those ports cannot be forwarded to his PCs.

A more expensive but simpler option is to pay the ISP for an extra IP address (usually $5/mo) and plug a simple hub or switch into the cable modem, then plug both routers into that. Each router will get its own public IP address from the ISP, so each router's WAN interface will be directly "on the Internet" and port fowarding will work properly on each router. Essentially you'll both have your own separate Internet connections, just physically going through one modem.

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

Answer:HD/Filesystem prob:Went from fair to bad; then to worse, much worse

Test the HDD with the drive manufacturers disk tools (preferably using a different PC). Run the short and long tests. If either test fails or has errors, the drive is faulty.

I am trying to get some help with this problem with my new G500. It is a Brand new Refurb from Lenovo Outlet. Display gets CRAZY with crazy colors. I have attached a screen shot.  This started happening within 3 days of using the laptop. It will happen basically once every 5 hours of use. It happened when I started up a program called "soft test" for school. Luckily I was able to press the power button (which is set to hibernate)  and then turn the computer on again and get back into the program without losing my work. The next time this happened I was trying to scan a document using a scanner program in windows 8.1The problem happened to me once while HDMI was connected and I saw all those weird colors on my TV. The computer was still fully functional with sound and everything. After I took out the hdmi wire and put it back in again the colors went away on my tv screen and once again I did not have to reboot to fix the screen.and just a few minutes ago, the problem happened as I was surfing the web on google chrome. QUESTION: How can I fix this problem and what exactly is the issue here??? I have tried using the intel drivers listed on the Lenovo website and updated those successfully, and everything worked fine, but now the problem just happened to me again while I was on chrome. seriously why is this happening to a brand new refurb from the lenovo outlet??????? This is a lenovo G500 running windows 8.1 (This laptop came with windo... I did the setting in KIS 2016 URL Advisor to check the URLs in All webpages.

When I opened "Malware - Clean MX - realtime" in both firefox and Chrome, Kaspersky URL advisor was able to check all the links in Firefox web browser accompanied by some hanging. But in Google Chrome, Kaspersky URL Advisor wasn't able to check any links in that webpage.

Firefox version 47 64-bit

Google chrome Version 51.0.2704.103 m (64-bit)

Kaspersky URL advisor worked on other web pages in Google chrome. It only not worked in "Malware - Clean MX - realtime"

So my conclusion is google chrome discards the task given to it if it detects the task could cause hanging. Now you know one of the reasons why Google chrome doesn't hang easily.

When I set the power option on my pc to have the monitor turn off after so many minutes it does not work. What I mean is that the monitor goes black for one second then comes back on. This problem just started a few days ago. I posted a thread on another forum and someone suggested I run msconfig and inspect the startup tab to see if there was something in there that might be causing the problem. I saw three things in there that I had uninstalled ... nero, incd, and sagetv. I cleared the checkboxes for those three then clicked okay. That is when things started going really bad. I immediately got an error message saying that I may need administrator privelages to make the changes. I am the admin on this computer, I have been since I installed XP. When I clicked okay on that box I was prompted to restart the computer which I did. When it rebooted I then got a message that said major hardware changes had taken place since the last time XP was started and that I had to reactivate XP. No hardware changes were made at all so this totally baffles me. I still can't make changes in msconfig and I am being reminded about every 5 minutes that I need to reactivate XP. I know this was a long winded post but I wanted to be sure and get as much info in there as I could. If you have any suggestions or questions I would love to hear them.

i've had verizondsl for about half a year or so now, and from last month to present, the connection has been horrible.. sometimes it would just hang for up to a minute at a time, with the modem activity light blinking slowly (loss of connectivity).. before it started, speeds were decent, and although slow compared to the optimum cable i was used to, it was sufficient. now it's just pure garbage. if it weren't for the fact that we're getting free cable, i would immediately switch to roadrunner

i figure asking you guys is probly much more helpful than those scripted outsourced fools at tech support. i tried all that "reset your modem" "unplug the ethernet cord" "make sure you're computer is on" crap already and would like some REAL answers..

PS- at my old house, we used to have verizon as well, and after a while it just stopped all of a sudden and when we called to see what happened, they said since there was construction in the area, they must have switched our phone line over to one with a further CO, and we were now too far to service. verizon is teh gay.

Answer:verizondsl getting worse and worse speeds

Well try plugging the modem into the demark jack if you have one (by where the phone line comes into your house). See if this still happensl. If it doesn't maybe something happened to your internal phone lines. (this probalby won't be the issue I'm betting).

Beyond doing that phone your ISP and get them to file a support ticket or whatever they call it there. When I was having trouble with my DSL connection a couple years ago I phoned up, they sent a guy from the telephone company to test the line and they replaced a device at the CO and the connection has been perfect ever since.

Initially it was Edge not working properly, now it mostly crashes. Even the new "amazing" feature of tab previews doesn't work properly. Imagine, I moved back to Chrome after so many years of being a happy IE user. Cortana was a bit iffy with "Hey Cortana". Now she doesn't listen to what I say at all, even when I press the button. The notification center has its own mood. Often decides to hide until I restart for absolutely no reason at all. Same goes for the sound volume and other flyouts on the desktop.
In short, there is massive degradation of various major features with every new build. And since I post all the issues I find using the feedback app, I know it is not just me experiencing these things. This is disastrous.
So, is it just me or you experience similar issues yourself?

Answer:Is it just me or does Windows 10 get worse and worse with every new build?

It's just you.

I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

take the graphics card out and insert it back in firmly making sure it is sat properly in its slot. check the manufacturers websites for your motherboard and graphics card and see what the bios updates do, and see if they have any FAQ's to check if anyone else has been having similiar problems to you in terms of people who have the same motherboard or graphics card??

Email the manufacturer(s) for your motherboard company and graphics company.

Ok bear with me as I try to explain this.

-There was a power outage in my area and my computer restarted. After restarting it would hang at the Windows loading screen with the blue bar, and it would stay like that forever.

-I went into safe mode which works fine and tried a system restore to an earlier date, and still wouldn't load.

-Went back into safe mode and it said Restoration Complete. Ran msconfig to do a diagnostic boot...still no luck.

-Ran chkdsk /r using Recovery Console, said it fixed the errors but still hangs at the same screen. Ran Samsung HD utility and detected ECC errors.

-Tried to do a Repair Windows installation using an original Windows cd, so it was SP1 when I had SP2. I tried a Windows XP Pro SP2 cd but there was no repair option so I went to my original, which was Home.

-Through the install there was a few errors such as COM+, directdb.dll, inetcomm.dll,msoe.dll and wab32.dll. I clicked okay with all of them and installation completed fine.

-After restarting, loading would be REALLY slow, and actually wouldn't go past the wallpaper. I checked task manager and explorer.exe isn't even there.

-Went into safe mode, which was super slow as well, and same thing with the no icons. Ran safe mode with Command prompt and opened system restore, only to find no restore points.

I am now at a loss as to what I should do.
Any help guys?

first off, im not the most computer illeterate but i know some stuff so plz bare with me.

i keep getting the blue screen of death probably about an hour into my computer startup. doesnt matter what im doing wether a game, net, chat, etc. i wish i could tell you what it says on the blue screen but it only flashes for about a second or two.

what i can remember are a bunch of zeros or numbers and the 'fatal error' at the bottom of the paragraph. then my computer restarts.

when my computer boots up, a voice comes on saying "System completed power-on self test, computer now booting from operating system". but now every once in a while it says "System failed memory test, computer now booting from operating system".

i know i had to delete a bunch of stuff off my C drive because i kept getting alerts that i had no space but even when i did delete programs, it didnt seem like it was making any room on the C drive.
I have Adware 6.0 and almost everytime i do a scan, the same files come up as infected and they're always .DLL files too. then i quarantine but when i scan the next day the same files come up as infected again.

thats all the info i can think of. somebody plz help because this started out with the blue screen about once a week and now its once every hour. HELP ME

Thanks in advance for your help and your valuable service to the community.

I picked up a nasty virus / malware recently and have tried to use McAfee and several Malware removers over the past 3 days to no avail. Everytime I seem to make progress something new emerges.

This started with the Antivirus 2009 Pro Malware taking over. It changed my file associations so I couldn't run any .exe's. It even removed the View Folder Options menu so that I couldn't re-associate the file extensions. Fortunately I was able to logon to the adminstrator logon and fix that issue.

I tried to do an XP repair but was unable to when the application couldn't recognize my administrator password even though I can log into the admin logon with that same password. I then ran Macfee, Spybot and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This seemed to clear up most of my problems although I noticed a prior issue of still having one or more iexplore.exe processes running even though I didn't have an IE browser open.

Sure enough the next day I suddenly was unable to connect to the internet.
I finally found your forum and started to follow your proceedures for cleaning.

I was unsuccessful in running several of the procedures. I have found that my DHCP Service will not start and gets the error "Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion". When I try to look at dependencies I get the error "Win32: Access id denied".

What OS are you running?
Did you try getting into safe mode and doing a system restore to before this started?
Did you try renaming the programs, running them in safe mode, or changing the .exe extension to .com?
Did you disable your AV and AS programs before running any of the scans?

Using Windows7 and IE8 32-bit I am constantly finding that the program stops responding and I have restore the last sesion, or worse still start again. Happens on both my home PC and my office PC, so its not the PC at fault. For example, today, trying to post this discussion took 8/9 restarts.
Anyone else experiencing problems?

Answer:IE8 problem - is it getting worse

This issue may be caused by some 3rd party add-ons that you may have installed on both of your PC's. Try reseting the IE settings to disable add-ons:
Close any IE or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.
Open a new IE window.
Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset. When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the settings, click Close, and then click OK.
Close IE. (The changes will take effect the next time you open IE.)
After that, please open IE again to verify if the issue has been resloved.
If this doesn't help....
Can I suggest that you try another browser such as Firefox to see if the problem still occurs.
You could also try rolling back IE8 to a previous version.

Welcome to TSF.

Before we begin, can you tell us how antiwpa.dll got onto your computer? It is a crack software to bypass copy protection for Windows.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this posting.

A while back, I upgraded my father's Sony Vaio PC (model VCG-RB44G) to Windows XP Professional (from Windows Media Edition). This required me to take the computer to my place in order to work on it.

Since my father took it back to his place, he has been having off-and-on problems with the performance of his PC. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it is slow to boot up, runs slowly for a short period of time and then works fine again, and sometimes it even crashes. There is also on occasion a strange chirping noise that sounds almost musical that is intermittent (which during this time the performance of the computer grinds to a halt).

Can anyone tell me if I am looking at a Windows XP problem or is it something with the hardware?

My problem started Sunday when I kept getting the screen which gives you the "Safe Mode" option, but no matter what I clicked I kept getting the "Safe Mode" screen. I called tech support and after I followed his suggestions I got a screen that said " Load needed DLLs for kernel" etc. The tech guy said I'd have to reinstall and would probably lose everything.
Monday I went and googled the error message to see if I could find more options, and which brought me to this forum. I followed the directions for the guide to reinstalling windows, however it set up a new Windows directory on my H drive (Before it was on my C drive).

1. Are my files still on my computer or did I screw up and erase everything? If my files are still on my computer how can I access them?
2. When I start my computer I get a menu giving me a choice of several Windows systems to choose from, one will get me to the new installation the other choices I will still get the same error message.
3. I could not find the Windows CD that came with my PC so I used a Windows XP professional edition that I had on my last computer. The PC I have now has XP home edition. Would this cause a problem?

Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

My mother-in-laws computer has the Smitfraud virus. It had no Anti-virus protection at all at the time.

I, unfortunately, immediately loaded and ran McAfee from AOL. After the scan was complete, it reported deleting several files. It also requested quarantining a file, which I did. I then restarted to see if the (I now know) ubiquitous Smitfraud background went away.

Not only did the background not go away, the desktop icons and task bar were gone! Several restarts: no change. Safe mode: no change. The system is running to the extent that ctrl/alt/del works and allows me to bring up Task Manager. From that I can run AOL, Word, and some other things. However, I have no Start button to access control panel to add/remove programs as the Smitfraud instructions indicate.

So, should I perform the Smitfraud removal instructions that I can without the control panel? I should be able to do everything except add/remove programs.

Or what? Any guidance would be great.

once this has happened however i have NO sound on my computer at all, not even system noises,

this makes no sence to me, i thought at first it was codec problems (fd show) but why would that have any control over any other sound on the computer,

normally i just restart it and its fine for a while when it will do it again,
except this "while" has become dramatically smaller,

i am vvveerrry confused,

just another note i am using a gigbit ga-7vt600 i think with an athlon xp,

the sound card is aureal audio au 8830 vortex, with another creative genric soundcard just for djing, the vortex card is connected to my speakers via a surround sound system via and optical output,

Hi, I have been having problems with adwares and whatever on my machine that I cannot remove, no matter what I have tried. I have tried AVG Antispyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware 2007 and a fix I downloaded from Symantec's website. The problem is that I keep getting false spyware prevention programs opening IE7 and popping up at random. Every single time I have tried to deal with this, I have found a program called VirtuMonde, and no matter what I do, even in safe mode, it still turns up all the time. My last resort was to try a hijackthis log, but I can make no sense of it. I wondered if anyone could help me?

Maybe you folks can help me with a problem that's abruptly appeared in the last week.  I'll give the system info first, then the way the problem appeared, and then what things I've tried to resolve it. Well, I am assuming it is all put together correctly. I can't see it and you can. With the power supply being replaced, the motherboard is the next suspect, but first:Remove ALL of the add in cards, the oprical drives and all hard drives. Just the motherboard, CPU w/heatsink/fan, 1 stick RAM and video card (if no onboard video) and see if can boot from a floppy. ( if you need one)If that works add one hard drive and recheck. Then add one thing at a time and see when the system fails. Give each "build" a reasonable length of time to assess functionality (an hour or so at each stage). If that doesn't work (gulp) it might be time for other replacements.  :-/The RAM can be tested with a free download at  Run each stick for an hour at a time or so, and then all together.Free hard drive diagnostics can be downloaded (for a bootable floppy) at the appropriate drive maker's web site.

I'm having a really tough time trying to get rid of a Trojan (I think that's what it is). At first my Kaspersky found a trojan that wanted to load from a website, which I blocked when asked if that is the action I wanted to take. This was last night. I blocked it, but soon afterward found that Internet Explorer would load automatically without any toolbars, and most importantly--> automatically. I use Foxfire so IE shouldn't be opening. It would load to an ad site (without toolbars or anything). I looked at Kaspersky's report to see if what I had blocked previously was doing this, and found this entry --> rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\system32\kiherana.dll and also two other entries, identical except for the dll part which were fugisode.dll and yawafuku.dll. I went to my windows\system32 file and renamed the dll's to see what would happen. IE stopped loading as often but would still come up. So I went to the registry to see what was going on (Kaspersky had written out the registry key as well). Here's were it gets interesting (so to speak).

This is my Windows computer that the wife uses, so to prevent any more earache I need a cure. The computer is running XP Home.Specs as follows:AMD 64 X2 3800Asus A8N Sli mobo2 x 1gb Crucial 3200 DDR2 X 80gb Maxter SATA drivesSeasonic S12 600 watt PSU2 x 7600 GT Nvidia graphics cards.HP lightscibe DVD/RW, Sony CD/RW / DVD Rom.I am not sure where to post this as i am not sure if it is a software or hardware problem. This has been happening for about 6 months now.Basically on rare occasions it will go through POST successfully, then the screen comes up with the moving bar, then after the bar has made about five full passes the screen goes blank.Normally pressing the reset button will cure it and it boots OK.I have posted about this problem before when it would not boot into windows at all and I got round it by doing an Acronis restore, I have just tried that again and Acronis will not pick up my external hard drive to restore from.Eventually after about 25 reboots I managed to get into Windows and had a look in the event viewer and the only error I could see was this. The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load atapi PCIIde.Can anyone help as this has me really frustrated, I do not now where to start looking.I have stripped it back to the bare essentials and no problems, then added different components and it ran with no problems for a while and now it is back with the intermittent problem and it has just taken me 25 reboots to get it to work.

Answer:Intermittent problem getting worse.

Hi, afraid I cannot provide any cure, except to say that I had a very similar problem requiring multiple reboots to get going - it turned out eventually to be a mobo problem, got new mobo, have had no problems since. This was all about 18 months ago.Good luck.

So earlier today, my laptop started acting up. My windows updates were disabled, and my desktop changed to a black screen with red letters saying my laptop was infected, with a bunch of extra text. So I ran MBAM and it detected 23 items. Most were removed and I haven't had that black screen occur again. But every time I've run it after that, 3 files always come up:

Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Value (under Other category: Value wuradoreva)
Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Key
Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Key

Every time I run MBAM, these 3 always appear. Even after I've clicked "removed selected."

On top of that, I've also had a problem with google redirecting. :/

My T400 gets shut down from time to time so I decided to clean it before my big project comes. So I got the fan out following the maintainance manual and blowed it dry with a duster. However, after I put all the parts back together, it got worse: It cannot even run over 5 min using the adapter. When I use the battery, the CPU temperature is around 60 C. The CPU usage reaches to 100% and as I checked the progresses in task manager I don't see anything big running. Its my first time opening a laptop so I think I might did someting wrong when i assemble or disassemble it. Anybody can help me figure out where the problem can possibly is?

Go to Solution.

Answer:Overheating problem gets worse after I cleaned my fan

Hi happysilvia, and welcome,
Did you only remove the fan, or did you also remove the heatsink assembly from the CPU?  If you disturbed the heatsink to CPU contact, did you clean it and apply thermal compound?  If you disturbed the CPU to heatsink assembly connection without reapplying compound, that might explain your issues.
Others may/will have better suggestions, but I don't remove a fan to clean it.

Hi Guys,
I recently had major problems with OE6, and with some help managed to back it up and get it up and running again.

The only problem is I have this folder sitting on my Desktop with all my old mail in it (.dbx files) and I am unable to import it. When I use the import function I just get an error 'No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open.'

Of course, there is no application & the folder does contain my .dbx files.

I read somewhere that I simply have to copy and paste these .dbx files, but I have done that - pasting them into what I think is the OE message folder but this does not work.

Now I have been playing around with OE6, created a new identity and that didn't work. Now when I open Outlook Express most of my mails that were in there and working, have now disappeared BUT the .dbx files for these folders still exists in the Store Folder!!

Please can anyone help - this is driving me crazy!!!

Thanks in advance,

I am a nongeek in need of Major Geek Help!

It all startrd yesterday when my IE would not open. I would receive the message:
"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I contacted Dell support and we uninstalled & reinstalled IE. It did not help.

I have a home network, so I downloaded the latest IE 6.0 from MS on a different pc and shipped it to the troubled machine. After install, I had the same problem.

I then shipped Netscape over to the troubled machine and loaded. I got it to work but did not set it as my default browser.

Through NS, I purchased, dnld, and instlld Nortan Internet Security2004 Professional. I also downloaded Earthlink's TotalAccess 2004.

Norton found a Trojan Horse in a file madise.dll and recommended I quarantine it.

It did not solve the problem.

I decided to remove TA2004 and when I rebooted, I get the following message after getting into my user account:

"TaskPanl.exe - Unable to locate component......The application has failed to start because E60Cmmon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem".

After clicking OK, OK, I then get:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library....Run Time Error!..... Program:C:\Windows\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe............
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

Clicking the OK button will not make the message go away.

I don't even know where to begin with this. I've never been defeated so horribly. I cannot make any sense of this problem. I'm having the problems on the system shown below. Beginning about six months ago I started having these problems.
I would get blue screens once inawhile and there would be different error messages every time. Finally the o.s. hard drive started making a horrible buzzing and so I swapped it out for a different one. Alright... things seem to be going alright.
I leave my computer on for a week or so and there's no problems...until something causes me to have to restart. Half the time the drives aren't recogonized upon boot-up and if they are windows freezes mid boot. Usually after an hour of tinkering.. reorganizing the drives, shouting profanities and putting my fist through a wall it will reboot again.. until another week goes by and the same process repeats itself.
Now the o.s. drive I swapped out before is making excessive clicking sounds when booting. So I think maybe this one is bad.. just like the last one was bad.. I'm really burning through the drives here.. but that's alright, i've got drives laying all over. So today I pull out my seagate drive that i bought new a month ago. Naturally my motherboard doesnt recogonize the seagate...but in only 1 configuration... three drives have to be hooked up including the clicky one with the o.s. on it now and the jumper settings have to... Answer:6 months and I've only made the problem worse.

You bought a new seagate ....have you tried removing all the other drives (hard) and booting up with the seagate setup utility ...then try install os in it?

Have you run Everest on it to look at what it reports or run memtest?

What is the exact error code on the BSOD?

How are all your three drives hooked up? Assuming master on last primary IDE/ slave on middle connection and....third on the secondary IDE along with the cd rom?

Have you run a disk check on the master?

Sorry in advance if this has come up hundreds of times before, The computer could turn off at any minute for all I know (It has blue lines all over and the resolution is really out) :/

So the problem is, I started getting a message which read: Hard Disc S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD backup and replace; It allowed you to press F1 in order to start the computer normally which has been fine for about a week or so, (I'm really stupid for ignoring this warning I know).

I restarted the computer when it froze and then it froze again...but this time it blue screened saying the file nv4_disp is causing the problem, to which I have no idea what this file is.

I left it for an hour and it has come back on, I started it up in normal mode and the blue lines and the bad resolution as mentioned above are here but I am obviously able to access the internet fine.

Hope this helps you lot to work out what is wrong (hope it isn't too hard to fix)
Thanks, James.

Answer:Hard Disc Problem(s)? or worse?

SMART is a part of the bios on the motherboard that tells you the integrity of the Hard Drive. It is telling you that the HDD is about to fail and to back up the data on the drive as soon as possible, because you are going to have a failure any minute. You will need to purchase a new HDD and reinstall everything.

Am I the only one facing this issue or all the people out there in this build facing similar issue.
Desperately need another update very sooner.

I recently had some sort of virus/malware attack my laptop which meant I was unable to access the internet. Its not a problem with the wireless as far as i'm aware as other people have been able to connect. The windows connection diagnostics said there was a winsock catalog error but sometimes it gives me different messages.

I attempted to try and fix it, firstly by running norton goback and then attempting to use DrWeb but think I've made it alot worse (did that before reading the first 'DO NOT FIX YOURSELF' page on the forum - schoolboy error).
A few virusy type things that have come up in the scan are 'trojan.swizzor' and 'adware.xbarre' and 'tool.killproc.3' - Think they are quarantined but not entirerly sure. i have the scan results saved if you require them at a later date.
i'm writing this from another pc as the laptop cannot connect to the internet.

Here are the reports of the scans as requested:

Hello. I've browsed these forums before after needing help, but this is my first post. As you will be able to tell, I'm not that technically minded, so forgive me please if this question seems obvious to you. I'd sure appreciate any help.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M60 which is just over 2 years old. I've noticed recently that the battery life was getting very poor; it was running at little under 30 minutes if I was watching a DVD, for example.

Last week, the laptop would not turn on. It tried to get started, but then just cut out before powering up. I tried a few things, including taking the battery out, putting it back in and then starting again, and it then did start just fine. However, it would only start with the mains electricity not connected; only on battery alone. I am still starting the laptop like this, and the problem is still the same. To start my laptop, I have to remove my battery, put it back in, start up, and then when it has powered up, I put the mains power in. If I do this before, it won't start.

Do you think this is likely to be just the battery that needs replacing, or is the problem more severe? I am no longer under guarantee, so don't want to pay for a service if a replacement battery would solve the problem, but similarly I don't want to pay for a battery only to find that doesn't work, and the have to pay for a service as well.

I hope you can help. It will be much appreciated.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite M60 problem. Battery or worse?

You didn't say if it worked the other way around
Power in , Battery always out

If it works like that, then it's likely battery
If it doesn't then it's likely onboard power converter (that one may be tricky!)

By the way, when removing both power sources, you should hold down the power button for 30 secs, dispersing all internal voltage (this may also fix it)

So I started doing "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" on my desktop (XP) a few weeks ago and it was a success. The problem was browser redirects. Lately the same problem has plagued my laptop (Vista) to such a degree that is it unbearable, so, with previous success in mind, I used the same method on my laptop. Now the browser redirect problem seems to be gone, but somehow I've gotten something worse now.

Now I'm getting what seems to be one of the symptoms of Vundo (it had been detected in the past and removed, according to one of the scanner specified in the Read and Run Me First). I have no problem other than a constantly crash and restarting Windows Explorer. That seems to be the only problem I'm having (aside from a blue screen of death 0x0000007e usbhub.sys problem on shutdown/hibernation, which occurred months before and should be unrelated). I can still access my files in very limited capacity, using task manager's new task button (which brings up an explorer-like menu for you to choose which task to start) to copy/cut/run whatever.

Now, here's what I did (that were out of the ordinary, compared to the instructions).

I had to repeatedly run Malwarebyte and Superantispyware a couple times, because I have a 140GB drive which required the scanners to take a while, and a lot of times they're not done by the time I have to leave the house and need to cancel the scan to bring it with me to do some other work late... I have tried to solve this problem by re installing Firefox and trying Chrome as well as IE.  I continually get the notice from whichever browser i use that it cannot find the web site.  It takes many tries before i am able to access the site.  I have scanned with Malwarebytes, SUPERantispyware and Avast and nothing unusual is found. It seems to be worse daily and is now starting to send me crazy!  It will even give me the same message when moving from one section of a site to another.
Thanking you for any help offered.  Regards.  JH

Answer:Firefox can't find the web site...this problem is getting worse.

Sounds like it could be a damaged winsock file or dns issues.
Please try:
1. Open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the search box upon clicking the start orb.
2. When cmd.exe shows up on the list up top either right click it and choose "Run as Administrator" or press Ctrl + Shift and hit Enter.
3. Type netsh winsock reset
4. Let it reset the files and then restart your PC.
Also while doing that:
Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark all the  checkboxes:
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - , *Please post the URL in your next reply along with the MiniToolBox results.*

That caused a BSOD.

Then I could not see any programs in the start menu history areas either the programs or the files. Also I was unable to unlock the task bar or make any other changes that were user preferences.

Ok for the last month or so I have been dealing with a BSOD that will pop up randomly. At first I thought it was a RAM problem but have run memtest and replaced both sticks of RAM. I'm leaning towards it being a video card problem because I was getting a Memory Parity Error BSOD, and also an atidiag BSOD. Those 2 BSOD's would alternate. Well now I just get random BSOD's that could be almost anyfile name.

The main problem I have now is I can't get by the windows boot screen, and if I do, no more than 2 mins later I get another BSOD. Occasionally I don't even make the windows boot screen. I have tried to do a windows repair by booting off the CD, but it crashes while the windows CD loads all the drivers or whatever, so I can't even reinstall windows if I wanted to.

I also have recently reformated the hard drive, done a clean install of windows and have not solved this problem. I'm still leaning towards it being a video card problem, but now my question is could the video card cause a crash before windows even starts up? Or am I looking more towards a motherboard problem? I'm lost as to what to do, it's not like I could run diagnostics on it (which would be pointless cause I've done all tests possible.)

I would appreciate any help that can be offered. I'd be more than happy to give you anymore information if you need it. Thank you guys in advance.

Answer:BSOD has gotten worse, can not figure out the problem, I turn to you guys.

Random BSODs that point to nearly everything is either memory or motherboard problems, in my experience. If you have access to other systems and components, replace everything in your computer except the motherboard. If you still have problems, it's your motherboard. If the problems stop, add your own components back one by one until the problems return. Whichever part you added just before that, is your guy.

Good luck!

For around two or three months the system has been crashing on a weekly or biweekly basis and wasn't so much of a problem as to interfere and warrant investigation on my part. Within the past few days, however, it has gotten much worse and now crashes at least once daily. I have done what I can with my limited computer skills and determined ntoskrnl.exe is the culprit and followed some potential solutions found on this forum as well as other sites but to no avail. Although it may be mere coincidence, I feel it is worth noting that the vast majority of crashes (90%+) occur when the computer has been left on but I am not currently at the desk working on anything. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

I sent in my laptop for repair as the graphics card was reporting code 43 (hardware issue) and wasn't working. I just got it back, and it's not reporting the error, but I can't even start GPU-based games. Previously, games would fall back to running on the CPU. My warranty expired during the repair, but since this is a symptom of the same issue, can I get it fixed? How can I go about getting this laptop to work? Thank you.

Hello! I was asked to post here with DDS logs
For the past six weeks, I've had a simple search engine redirecting virus on my Windows 7. For five weeks, I tried running typical anti-virus software such as MalwareBytes, AVG 2013, and Microsoft Security Essentials. It wasn't too harmful, and I pretty much just needed to click a search engine result a second time and I would get to where I needed to go. However, this past week during a long holiday break, I tried running new antivirus software such as Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot, ComboFix, and TDSSKiller. The last two seemed successful at finding problems, but at the cost of the virus reacting viciously and deleting files and cutting off access to the internet.
I tried system restore, and was able to get it mostly back to the way it was before trying to install the new antivirus software, except that I now need to grant permission to allow Adobe Flash videos to work every time I wish to view one. This problem mostly occurred on Firefox, so I swapped to Internet Explorer. However, IE seemed to just recently develop a new problem of its own called Sweetpacks, and the homepage and searches are redirected to this obvious virus page. Checked back on Firefox, which I had uninstalled and reinstalled, and noticed that Firefox was able to disable this Sweetpacks add-on because it detected the security risk.
But right now, I'm trying to figure out how I might be able to solve this problem without backing up everything,... Read more

But right now, I'm trying to figure out how I might be able to solve this problem without backing up everything, as I have some student software that has a limited t... Read more

Fairly newer Toshiba Satellite L655 s5101 Windows 7
Before i get into the details you should know part of my laptop's problem is even being able to type. Trying to go back and change a word jumbles up everything so apologies for the insults to English grammar and language that may come.
Anyways, at first i thought i had a virus. My anti viruses deleted the effected files. My scanners said everything was clean, but to be on the safe side brought it to Staples where i bought it. The guy said a system restore to factory settings would work. I did that and the problem was STILL there. After countless scans the virus seems to be gone. I've barley even had this laptop a couple months and im really trying to avoid shelling out money for something i JUST bought and wasnt cheap (for me anyways)

Description of Problems: Things like to highlight on their own. For example if i go into a folder with pictures and i click on a thumbnail, the rest one by one light up. If i click on a picture to view its like its a slideshow when it shouldn't be. Issues with tool bars as well. If i click when i try to scroll down to pick something often other tool bars light up. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the mouse. If there are bubble options to pick from like "male, female" the chosen answer may bounce back and forth on its own.
I've checked driver updates, nothing. I just defragmented, toshiba health monitor says everything is fine.

Thanks for ... Read more

Answer:Returned laptop to factory settings, yet strange problem getting worse

First thought is it sounds as if the 'left-click' is sticking or repeating very fast.
Does the same effect happen if you use the touch pad or a plugged-in USB mouse?
Can you go into Control panel, hardware, devices and printers, mouse, 'Pointer options' tab. Set the 'Set pointer speed' in the centre of the scale.
Then untick the box 'Enhance pointer precision'
In the 'Buttons' tab, click 'Restore defaults'
See if that makes any difference.

NEVER buy a Lenovo  I just bought a brand new Flex laptop from the Microsoft Store.  A MAJOR PROBLEM for those who use the touchpad.  It doesn't allow the user to turn off the drag in the mouse buttons (only).  When I use the touch pad, i move the cursor (for example to select a radial button).  However when I go to click on the left or right mouse buttons on the touch pad it's so sensitive to movement that it moves the curosor away from the radial button. There should be a way to map the touch pad.  Lenovo blames the software and the touchpad company.  Yet they chose this touchpad.  I need support from one company.  They sent me to talk with the touchpad company.  Sorry.  It's your Laptop Lenovo.  To add to Lenovo's problem, their support is in India and it is almost impossible to understand the support person or their supervisor.

Dear Friends
Thanks for the service you provide. I posted this question on the site Geekstogo but have had no replies yet. It is an urgent question, so I am asking on this Forum instead. Should I remove my post from the other forum?

The reason that it is so urgent is that I am a delivery captain, and use my computer to navigate. Hence the "Life threatening" heading in the message. I have all my charts, tide tables past courses and weather info, GRIB files etc on the computer and use a USB GPS. If I do not make sure that my computer is clean, I am worried that I could potentially suffer a crash or what is worse a malfunction. In my line of work this would be fatal. Maybe I am too careful, but I am soon leaving for the Carribean to sail a 36 ft sailboat across the Atlantic, and have the responsibility for my Crew. This naturally makes me very cautious.

Here is the question:

I recently installed a Adesso tablet and got a trojan warning from my Virus program (bitdefender) it said that a trojan >Trojan .Generic (and a number)< had tried to infect my computer unsuccesfully.

After the installation however, I now keep getting a errormessages when I start up the computer. The Error message says:

C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization, Choose ?Close? to terminate the application

I have uninstalled NORTON and use BITDEFENDER instead, so I do not understand what a SYMANTEC file is doing on my ... Read more

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

Hi All, I hope someone here can help me as I can't go on with this crazy machine any longer...

My machine is a 2012 Sony Vaio, I've just updated my system specs. What happens is the following:

The fan runs for no apparent reason. It just takes off, loud and blowing out hot air even though the machine is just ticking over, more noisy than it ever used to be. As I'm just writing this, it's racing away

The track-pad sticks and just generally plays up, I've attached two screenshots, the first as I was updating my system specs (writing specs or moving the pointer around, and it decides to highlight a load), the second as I was uploading that first screenshot (I was clicking on 'manage attachments'). Other times the pointer shoots around all over, no corelation to my hand movements, also when I go to tap the pad, the pointer flies off.

Comodo Dragon has been hanging, sticking, not-responding.

Generally my machine has been performing horribly, so I performed all the operations below but nothing has helped:

EAM runs its regular scans, every couple of days, finds nothing
MBAM finds nothing,
MBAR clean
SAS clean
Hitman Pro default, clean
Following Chiron's suggestions on TechSupportAlert:
Kaspersky TDSS Killer clean
Comodo Cleaning Essentials clean
Glary Utilities Pro default scan and fix
I then ran SFC /scannow and everything is fine,
Puran Defrag running a boot-time defrag
Full disk check
Carefully vacuumed the ventilation slots
Reinstalled (repaired) Comodo Dragon

Any sugges... Read more

Kinda like this example I found: could be happening?jst tried the integrated viideo and nothing. it's probably RAM

Answer: Problem booting my computer, and crazy screen problem..

It could be a problem with BIOS, just check and see what the settings are.

Question: Crazy problem!

So I was having some OC issues which SEEM to be fixed by me flashing the bios on my ASUS M5A97 Mobo. Weirdest thing happened though. Once bios were done and I start my computer, now my PCI Wireless card has no driver and is an "ethernet adapter".

So I get the drivers onto a USB stick and install them. The only way they will install is if I unplug the card and plug it in then immediatly hit the install app for the driver. Never knew you could plug n play PCI cards but that was the driver insturctions also.

So it all works fine and dandy right? Every time I restart my computer the driver for the wifi card mysteriously disapears and I have to repeat the entire unplug/plug in the card and install the driver to get it to work. So weird? I assume it is a bios setting but I checked already and don't think that is the case.

Card is a D-Link Wireless Extreme N Adapter DWA-552

Question: Very crazy problem

Ok I've only posted on this forum once before, but you guys and gals seem to be pretty helpful. A few weeks ago I find a new CD burning program installed on my computer and figured my sister put it there so I uninstalled it. After I did that my CD drvies weren't being recognized so I opened it up. I'm pretty familiar with the inner workings of computer to the point I can take it apart and put it back together and have it work or put new parts in. Now I checked the connections and they were still connected so I did a system restore and the drives came back. Now getting to my point...My internet keyboard isn't functioning properly. When I press buttons like "Connect" and "Search" a window comes up telling me to reconfigure my keyboard so I go to do it since I figured that upgrading Opera to the newest version did something to it and there's no tab that says "Button". I tried doing a system restore and it didn't work. I'm completely stuck on the problem.

Answer:Very crazy problem

Have you tried going to the device manager select the keyboard and then either re-installing the driver for the keyboard or (if that doesn't work) even deleting it and then rebooting so Windows laods the drivers itself.

I pulled the phone plug connection out of my laptop by accident and the sort of clip on the inside of the phone plug hole on the laptop which clicks the plug into the hole broke off. That means of course that in order to get the phone connection plug to stay in the phone connection hole on my laptop I had to tape it into the plug hole and sometimes it works and I can connect to Internet but after a few or several minutes the Internet connection is disconnected. Any suggestion on what to do to get it to stay in permanently?

Answer:crazy problem

are you sure this is a hardware problem? sounds more like a windows issue to me.
you might try loading a restore point from before the problem started, or you could try running the system file checker i.e. open "run" from the start menu enter "cmd" then at the prompt type "sfc/scanboot" and enter then reboot.
If its a recurring problem then it might be a driver issue with your harddrive interface controller or something like that.

Question: Crazy Problem

Hi, Just reformated my computer, installed all critical windows updates, and hardware drivers. When i try to set jpegs as wallpapers it takes an eternity to load them and causes the display properties window to hang, but bmp's load up instantly.. Jpegs work and load perfectly fine in other programs such as paint, photoshop though.

All of this is after i have just reformated for like the 3rd time in 2 days to see if it was a installation problem, but i guess not. It would seem its a hardware issue but i can play games like oblivion at normal fps, aswell as other games.

Any ideas ?

Answer:Crazy Problem

Why don't you convert it to a .BMP, which will solve the problem.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please see if you are able to do any of the below READ & RUN ME FIRST malware procedure. If you cannot get anything to run then please tell us what version of Windows you are using and also tell us if you have your Windows boot CD/DVD.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting update... Read more

I have a clients PC here that theyve asked me to work on.
They said something about a trojan but dont know anything else about it, they dont know much about computers. He told me that ever since he downloaded McAfee virus software, its been doing this.. Im THINKING its possible that the firewall is locking everything up, because I plugged it in w/o internet and it works just fine...

when i went to take a look at it, the computer would boot up and everything, but when I would go to open any file on the desktop, it wouldnt open, it would just sit there.. if I click the start button it freezes.. I can still click on things, but the start menu stays open etc..

I managed to get into networked safe-mode and download a few spyware cleaners (ad-aware[which just froze up] and spy-bot) and cleaned off what I could. There were still a few hi-jacks stuck on there but i could get those off later im almost positive thats not the reason why this computer wont open anything.

I CANNOT format this computer, it has my clients company on it, and they do not back anything up (that will soon change) and so they cant lose whats on here or they WILL go under.

any suggestions?

The Specs:
Compaq presario SR1135CL
512mb ram
120gb hdd
windows xp

anything else please let me know!!

(x-posted sorry)

Answer:Help with Crazy Problem

Given the importance of the data, stop right there.

The hard drive should be removed, and slaved to another PC.
Ownership will then be needed to be applied to the folders to extract the data.

Please do not take this the wrong way, but if you do not have a lot of experience in these matters with NT systems such as XP, the data is at risk.
I would suggest getting it to a professional in Windows NT file systems while its still accessible, unless you carry a large amount of professional indemnity insurance if the data goes south.

It may be possible to repair the operating system, but its also possible to corrupt user profiles and lose the data (in fact its quite easy to do so)

I'm ready to kill the person that invented this virus that has hit me three times in as many weeks. XP Total Security 2011, has caused me more loss of mind and m ental stablity then anything in my life. this is what it does before actually infecting my machine

It disables my firewall
It disables my automatic updates and locks AU to off/disabled, I have to use the run command to actually activate the dll to turn on Automatic Updates
It disables my current anytivirus protection, (Microsfot Secuirity Essentials)

Then when viewing DeviantART, my internet windows dies, all its tabs die as well. first thing I run is MSE, as I am running it a fake Windows Security Center pops up saying I am infected. Thankfully so far MSE has found and supposdely removed the things it has found. Even on start up it finds the EXACT same things as it found during the scan, two or three items. I have the DDS logs, but sadly when trying ot run the GMER scanner, I got hit with the Blue Screen of Death, this virus will not quit. and I've lots more braincells fighting a uphill battle with this thing. I even ran rkill, it says it found and killed a proxy connection, which I never set. It leaves a RK_Proxy reg key on my desktop when done, I merly deleted it, as I never set a proxy, so merging will do little good.

I want this machine cleaned, and the virus properly killed and all my backdoors sealed.

I've been having a very strange problem with wireless routers. I've tried six different routers and they all have the same problem. The wireless network vanishes and reappears about 45 seconds later. It does this ranging from every 5 minutes to twice a day. It does this across all wireless devices, so it is the fault of the router, not the devices. I've tried three two Netgear N-300 routers and three ASUS RT-N16 routers. They all exhibit the problem. The only exception is a bargain bin Netgear router that I use as a backup, it works fine. I thought that it might be a power issue, so I moved the newest one to new surge protector and outlet, that didn't work. I've changed the wireless channel, power cycled the router, and restored it to factory, none worked. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi as of yesterday my machine developed an FTP error, its been a night mare to resolved. I have windows 7 and use primarily Filezilla,
All of a suddent FTP stopped working. The error in the FZ dialogue box was unable to "retreive directory" since then I have tried various Filezilla trouble shooting steps which dont seem to have any effect and seem very complicated. I have also tried another FTP client, same issue, also moved to different location tried on both wifi and wired connection. I have subsequently disabled my zonealarm windows firewall and still no effect.
I have read something about ports but it seems overwhelmingly confusing and not sure where to start.
Can you help

Answer:FTP Problem Driving Me Crazy

What are you trying to connect to?
If the address of the site you are trying to connect to has changed then this may be causing your problem.
I us Filezilla to connect to my PVR(Humax) but have had to set a static address manually in the PVR so the router does not kee assigning different adresses each time the PVR is switched on.

sorry if this is the wrong forum.

Whenever i launch internet explorer it takes longer than usual to load. And when i go to type a web address it just freezes and never loads a new webpage. I don;t know what is going on. This has started to happen on friday.

I;ve ran the following and they found some stuff and have deleted it but i still have the same problem. I;ve even tried system restore and it still persist.

I noticed that when i try to delete my history i get an error about not being able to open shell32.dll or something and that some about a inetcpl.cpl is having a problem.

I;ve ran the following tests
- cwshredder
- housecall online scanner
- spybot ( it freezes when i try to delete some spywares)
- ad aware
- microsoft windows defender

I;ve ran all programs in in safe mode and normal mode.

From cwshredder i consistently get cws.msconfig spyware error and it gets removed but ti eventually comes back.

I;ve even tried to remove the inetcpl.cp from the registry and also deleted all my coookies and temporary files.

Answer:crazy spyware problem in ie 6 help!

you do realize that some spyware/adware may be impossible to fully remove from your system, if it's that bad just do a full backup of your files and reinstall the os. After your done with it, update all the system drivers and run a ghost image of your os drive. This way the next time it happens you can be back up and running much quicker

i have never come across anything like this problem i'm having.

every once in a while, i'll wipe my primary hard drive and reinstall xp, just because sometimes it's easier for me to clean up that way. anyway, my secondary hdd houses all of my application install files, music, video, etc...basically anything and everything i would need or want to keep if i reformatted or something happened.

so today i format and re-install xp, and about the second time i rebooted chkdsk starts running and begins to fix a rather large amount of "problems" on drive d:[my seconday hdd]. now, it seems an unspecified amount of files on this drive are now corrupt, including programs, music and video.

even more interesting, it seemed to only affect these files that i have aqcuired within maybe the last month or so, and unless i'm mistaken, they are all files i have downloaded on another computer on my network and transferred to this pc.

i have done absolutely nothing to this secondary drive throughout this process, so i am at a loss. any ideas why this has happened, or more importantly, what i can do to fix it, if anything?

i have tried running chkdsk again, to no avail.

Answer:crazy re-installation problem

it might be a physical problem with the disk platter so it could be unfixable. You may not come across any problem but i would keep a regular backup in case the drive is on its last legs.

Try formatting again or using some zero fill tools.

Hi. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-F2A68HM-H. Graphics card is Geforce GTX 650 Ti (2gb); 500 watt PSU. When card is installed in PCI e slot and not plugged in, I get onboard graphics. As soon as I plug the card in, the display goes black. Also, when the card is unplugged and the pc turned on; the fans are louder than when the card is plugged in. I have already swapped out the motherboard; PSU and tried another graphics card. Bios shows date of 1/2016 so I'm assuming it does not need to be flashed. Tried pulling the memory sticks. All result in the exact same problem. Bios is set to PCI E and is set to auto select the PCI e slot when a card is plugged in. I am completely stumped at this point. Any help would be much appreciated. Called the geek squad and they had no suggestions....

I was going to replace a thermal paste on my new PC, which worked perfectly for last months.
i7 920 @ stock, cooled by Coolermaster V8
ASUS P6T Deluxe V2,
6GB corsair XMS3 RAM @ 1600,
nVidia GTX 275 @ stock,
PSU- corsair TX850
3 HDDs and 2 Optical drives

So I removed the mobo, then cooler, applied the new paste (MX-2). Istalled all stuff back, connected.
Turn on - NOTHING, no POST. Fans spinning (cpu too), though, and mobo has it lights on (besides blue LED under the RAM slots), but thats it. AND the case Power LED and HDD LED are both permanently on,
The video card's fan is not moving, wiredly (it usualy at max speed during the first seconds on boot), but after a minute it gets warmer.
I tried to reset the CMOS, both by jumper and removing the battery - no change
tried another video card (nvidia 6200 LE) - no change
tried to unplug everything - no change.
Also I tried to remove all (CPU too), check for scraches, or anything - all good.
Edit: one optical drive is looks "unpowered" while connected to IDE cable, if disconnected, ok.

So HELP!?, Any ideas, anyone?

Answer:crazy boot problem?!?! HELP

Double check your connectors, if the 8-pin mobo connector isn't plugged in good it won't start up. You removed the mobo? Make sure it's not grounding out on a stand-off or the case or a loose screw. Make sure you have the PWR, Reset, etc... connectors plugged in correctly. You removed the CPU? Make sure you didn't bend any pins or get any paste or lint in the socket.

Okay, im having quite a serious problem with my main computer, here's the case.

a month or so ago, my pc with windows xp started to suddenly stop during startup, now, i dont mean that it just goes off.

the screen does not get any signal, and its power button starts blinking,
but the pc itself is on, the fans are turning, and the power light is on,
but it does stop reacting to the on/off or reset buttons on the front of my pc.

lets just call this "Twilight" for now (the twilight of off and on, )

after that first time, it started doing it far more often, when it started, there was a 50% chance that it would go into twilight
then i would have to take the power off, by using the power on/off button on the PSU, put it back on, and restart the pc.

but a few days ago it started happening way more often, 75 and 90% of the time, and recently it has been doing it all the time.

now, in an attempt to resolve this issue, i have done a number of things.

1. ive taken out major components one by one, and started it to see if i could find the issue, but removing the GFX card didnt work, nor did removing my installation-hdd, or my Memory strips (in this case i just took them out and put them back in again, before restarting the pc) but none of this worked, it still went into twilight.

2. i have tried installing windows 7 on it, instead of the XP that was on it, after "getting" an install cd for Win7, i tried installing it, but it fell out while installing it (... Read more

For about 3 months now, I've been having problems with me computer restarting at random. I've gone to many different length to solve this problem and still no resolve.

I used to run a Pentium 3, 3.2 ghz, radeon 1300x, sound audigy ls, wd200 hdd, kingston 2 gb memory for gaming, and windows xp pro sp2.

I used to think it was the chip overheating so I had a huge super fast fan and heatsink and the chip was still hot so I just upgraded almost everything.

I now run a Pentium Core 2 Duo E8400 (stock fan and heatsink), intel extreme dx488t2 motherboard, nvidia geforce 8500 gt video card, sound card on mobo, and windows vista.

the case remains the same, the 2 dvd r drives remain the same, the power supply in the same although it is still relatively new since I just replaced it when I used the old setup.

since I've changed all that stuff it is still restarting at random. I did a chkdsk today and no problems.

drivers are up to date as well. I've even reinstalled vista twice. the first time was after a format of the hard drive, the other time was a reinstall. the random restarts were happening during both instances of vista.

any ideas?

Hi,I cloned my C: last month to a brand new WD HDD,using Acronis True Image. With the new HDD fitted the PC runs like a dream, except sometimes when I run a virus scan. The PC will reboot half way through the scan, not every time and with different virus/matware apps.I have checked event viewer, nothing listed. No problems with device manager,no virus or malware,no over heating issues, nothing to pin point why this happens.I have just fitted my old C:,and will see what happens over the next couple of weeks.I am about to run WD own diagnostic software to test the drive. This never happened with the old HDD.Could it be down to an error in the cloning,or something else, your thoughts and help are appreciated.Thanksps, defrag, chkdsk, reg scan have been actioned weekly/monthly

Where did you get Win7? Did you burn the DVD yourself? If so burn another at 4x speed with ImgBurn, or write to flash stick using Universal USB Installer. Unplug the DVD drive when trying flash stick install.

If these methods fail then it is likely the ISO, because this error is almost always the installer.

I have a REALLY weird computer problem and I desparately need help. When I turned on my computer today, it acted as if the entire computer had a really low frame rate. Everything moves really slow, and I can even see the line coming down to refresh this screen. I've tried a system restore and even a non-destructive pc recovery, and nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me? I have no idea what is causing this.

Do the following:

1. Turn on your computer
2. Press the F8 key constantly until this menu shows up
3. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard select "Safe Mode" and press enter.

Let me know if "Safe Mode" runs smoothly.

Hi to one and all.
Whilst I am not at all a novice in regards to all things Windows/PCs, I am at the end of my patience and wonder if I could ask the good people here to validate my thoughts/actions and somehow point me towards a resolution.
The problem: PC will consistently either BSD or generate a load of c:\ disk related errors after about 6 hours of use, although this can vary a little.
PC is based on a PC Chips P29G motherboard, Intel dual core 2.8GHx proc, 2GB memory running Win XP PS2 - plus all current patches. It has x2 IDE Seagate drives, x1 Seagate SATA drive plus x2 USB disks.
PC was fine, but then developed the problems for no apparent reason - well, nothing I can identify.
Errors are most usually the "... xxxx.dll is not a valid Windows image" type with associated "unable to write data to disk", "cannot write" $Mft, $UsnTrnl:$J and $BitMap messages. It all points to the disk going south.
So, disk replaced - rebuilt XP SP2 and all programs re-installed - no change. Extensive Seagate tests run very clean on new disk. Slip installed XP SP2 (just in case) - no change. Run extensive memory tests - all clean. Replaced disk cables, swapped IDE ports - no change. Changed anti-virus to AVG from McAfee - no change. Moved swap file to another disk - no change.
Last resort seems to be yet another re-format, Virgin install and start again, but I would not be that hopeful.
My worst fear is an infection of some kind, but the disk scan never compl... Read more

Hey there people, I have been having this problem with utorrent for a while now. At first, I didn't think it was anything big so i blew it off. Now its a pretty major problem, as it is interfering with my ability to download torrents properly. (Don't worry, im not downloading any cracked programs or porn or anything)

So i wanna completely start from the beginning, so please stay with me. Okay, so about 2 weeks ago, i reformated my computer. I have a windows XP with service pack 3. Last week, after i had finished installing everything important for windows, i installed utorrent and before i knew it, i was downloading torrents normally as i usually do. I wanted to continue the download at night so they would finish when i woke up the next morning, so i closed utorrent. When i closed utorrent, This little window popped up:

I wasn't sure what to do so i clicked retry. That wouldn't work because the same window just kept popping up. So i clicked cancel. I had not the slightest clue as to what that was all about, so i opened utorrent again and found that the torrents that i was downloading had disappeared. So i downloaded the torrents again and then closed utorrent again, and the same thing happened. I was frustrated, so i deleted utorrent. When i went to delete utorrent, i noticed that it was not in the add or remove programs list. So i had to manually delete everything relating to utorrent. (i did not go in depth and delete the entries in the registry rela... Read more

OK ive put this in the Win Xp thread cos i have no idea whats going on. Half-life 2 crashes to desktop with asound loop (but no error msg) and ive done everything i can thing of re drivers etc etc. Ive got a fan in the side panel of my case with a fan sucking air in through a funnel to the cpu fan. This fan makes my pc cooler when the case side is on. When i take the side off, and the temp goes UP slightly, it crashes much less frequently!! Please help if u can cos this has been bugging me for a month now

Try downloading Speedfan (alternate link if first doesn't work) and see what your temps are running at.

You might try under-clocking your cpu to drop the temps a little more.

I have recently bought a new motherboard with processor and a power supply.

AMD Athlon XP 3000 w/ barton core and an ECS N2U400-A socket A motherboard. It has an 8x AGP video slot, and I am putting a raedon 4x AGP video card into it.

The machine seems to boot, all the fans start, but there is no signal to the monitor. This thing is still getting me down, more than anything it is bothering me.

I have had the monitor work once for like two seconds, then when I powered off to plug in a keyboard the thing quit reciving a signal. I don't know what exactly the problem is, so any help would be nice. I know the video card works because it has worked in other machines. I have tested other video cards and still recieve no signal. The montior also works on other computers, so it is not the monitor.

Any help ideas or comments at all would be greatly appreciated.
