TrendMicro realo-time scan causes Vista to lock up

Question: TrendMicro realo-time scan causes Vista to lock up

Vista OS on Toshiba laptop, and other laptops.

Juat after Christmas, five of our laptops running Vista started locking up. We run TrendMicro Client Security Agent software; when we disable the real-time scan the machines run fine but when we enable the real-time scan they lock up immediately.

TrendMicro suggested that the version of the scan software we are running was old; I downloaded the latest version and installed it on one machine and it locked up immediately. I have disabled the automatic scanning for the time being but need tor resolve this before any users contract a virus.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: TrendMicro realo-time scan causes Vista to lock up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:trendmicro scan

Typically things like this are just miscellaneous stray registry keys that are not really of much concern. Attach a log from TrendMicro that shows exactly what it is finding.

You can see a length discussion/procedure of similar stuff from TrendMicro in the below link:

Also you can see the approach use to fix the problems. That thread went on longer than necessary because the user reported incorrect information on what was being found.

I'm new to this and this is my first post ever. I think my computer may be infected with a virus (Conflicker) and someone suggested I run a scan using Housecall to see if it showed up. When I try to load the scan web page it hangs up part way through and I'm not able to run the scan. I've tried loading the page with both FireFox ( and IE (7.0.5730.11) but neither worked.

I downloaded HijackThis, scanned my computer, and saved a log of the event. I'm told I can post this log for evaluation online. I've searched this forum but didn't find any info re this specific problem. Can anyone please help, or at least point me in the right direction for an answer?

Just a tip to pass along!

You may want to check this out.

As part of a thorough system clean today I went to the...

Trend Micro HouseCall On-line Scan...

...and found that they offer a new 6.0 Beta version that includes a Virus
AND Spyware Scan.

I had already completed my Spybot, Ad-Aware, MS Anti-Spyware, etc.
scan before running HouseCall and "thought I was squeaky-clean".

HouseCall found three new threats (although NO Virus or Trojan malware):
1- MS Vulnerability

If you haven't been to HouseCall recently you might want to check it
out and run the Beta Scan.

NOTE: my scan took about 1hr, 10min (around 70K files).

Also, Trend Micro HouseCall is the only online virus
scanner on the market that supports multiple Operating Systems and multiple
Browser architectures!
Browser support includes all major browsers that support the Java 2 Platform.
(so should be ok using Firefox).

I use TrendMicro Office Scan as my AV software. Actually, I didn't have a choice. Everybody on my network is forced to put it on their computers. Now, when I right click its icon on the bottom right of the screen and choose "unload" it asks for a password, which, of course, I don't know. Searching around the internet I found a trick to stop this service which is to go the DOS and to type in:

net stop "OfficeScanNT Listener"
net stop "OfficeScanNT RealTime Scan"

Apparently this is supposed to be a good exploitation of Windows's vunerability. But anyways the scan stops successfully, but then a whole bunch of my programs declare "we have encountered a problem and need to be shut down." Furthermore, Trendmicro icon on the System Tray is still around, only it's red instead of blue. Right-clicking it and choosing OfficeScan Main yields "The OfficeClient is not running."

It seems as if this is not the proper way to solve my problem. Anybody's got an idea to stop Trendmicro, and even to uninstall it for good (without having to know the password)?

Thanks in advance,

Background info: Windows XP SP2, Inspiron 1100. I have no firewalls or AV softwares (beside Trendmicro).

Basically, I have some people that would jump at the chance to hop onto an Administrator's account due to the restrictions they have. That being said, even if I leave my notebook alone for 5 minutes, I want the darn thing locked.

Just due to the fact I personally like a couple of the new Vista screensavers, is there a way to both lock and immediately start the screensaver?

Answer:Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

Not sure why the screensaver would play into it, but whatever.

Set the screensaver to require a password on resume (even if the screensaver doesn't kick in automagically this is the proper setting), and press Windows+L anytime to lock the workstation immediately.

Hope this helps...

My McAfee Real-Time Scan will not remain enabled. When I try to run either Quick Scan or Full Scan, an error message comes up, telling me to return to the McAfee Internet Security Home and to try to run the scan again.

I have followed their instructions for re-enabling the Real-Time Scan to the best of my abilities, by trying to restart the McShield Service, and by running the oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility that they instructed me to download. The oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility will not run.

I have contacted McAfee and they have told me that it is a problem with Windows Update. I have contacted Microsoft and told them that as well, but they seem to be trying to rule out any other possible cause, than what McAfee says is the actual cause of the problem, thereby dragging this out even longer.

Microsoft is supposed to be getting back to me again tomorrow, but any other help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

I am not quite sure where to it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

Answer:Vista will password lock when computer is idle for a period of time

Right click on your Desktop and click on Personalise. Click Screensaver in the new window. In the Screensaver window, uncheck "On resume display logon screen", click OK and the problem should be fixed!

Very recently I bought a Dell XPS 430 Desktop: Intel 2 Quad Processor, 6GB RAM, 256MB ATI Raedon GC, 750GB HD.

It is 64-bit with Vista.

Is it possible to find a program that will allow me to do boot time virus scans?

Answer:Boot time Virus Scan for Vista 64 bit?

I don't know of any. It would be hard to implement such a thing and maybe not worth the time of the makers if they either trust their online scans or expect that a rootkit would already have become active at boot before a scan could be started, anyway.

Your 2 best options are the normal, online scans, or a bootable antivirus CD. These can be found in a web search. Since they seem to come and go pretty fast, I haven't made an effort to create a list of them.

You could also make a bootable UBCD4Win CD and then run antimalware apps from that or from a USB drive after booting into the UBCD4Win.

Your idea is a good one. I often boot from the UBCD4Win and run scans. Usually, I find things that were not detectable while Windows was running.

I have using Win XP on my home computer and have used "TrendMicro Internet Security" as a firewall and antivirus for years.  I recently resubscribed for another year, downloaded it succesfully and I am quite happy with it.  Not long ago I bought a new HP laptop to take with me as i travel.  It came with VISTA as an OS, no choice there.  TrendMicro allows you to use their Internert Security 2007 on three machines, so I downloaded it onto the Laptop.  However, when I try to install it, I get the message,  "A FATAL ERROR IN YOUR WINDOWS OS HAS STOPPED THE SETUP PROGRAM.  PLEASE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE TRYING AGAIN."  I have spent a long timeon the phone with TrendMicro but have no success as yet.  Anybody have any ideas as to fixing this problem??   :-?

Answer:Cannot install TrendMicro firewall on Vista

You may need to update that package...according to TrendMicro it is Vista ready but the version you have even though it is 2007 might not be complete...Check their site for a Vista patch.

I am looking for help with Vista and Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

I am working on an implementation of the wsd scan protocol on a scanner.

I have a documentation for the wsd scan protocol for the scanner side, but I do not have any documentation for the windows side, i.e., for the Vista/Windows 7 Fax and Scan application.

In particular, I would like to know whether it is possible to change the timeout value for the RetrieveImage message. This message times out if no scan data is received in 30secs.
However, for higher resolutions scanner calibration can take longer than 30secs. For this reason I am not able to scan and retrieve the image at 1200dpi.

Other problems I have:

1. Often Windows Fax and Scan freezes. I have to reboot the PC.
2. Often Stop/Start of the WIA service is not relible. I have to reboot the PC.
4. WSD Scan discovery seems to be unrelible. Often when trying to scan a document using Fax and Scan I get a message saying that there is no scanner configured. However, at sturtup the scanner always sends a correct discovery message.

I will be thankful for any help.

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]

Hi there,

Since I got my current PC I've had an issue where it would occassionally completely lock-up, i.e. completely still image on screen, mouse wouldn't move, and it also put out a buzzing sound through the speakers/headphones. The only option was to force shutdown and start it up again. But it didn't happen that often so I wasn't bothered by it much.

However since updating to Windows 8 it is now happening about 15 minutes into use every time I turn the PC on (but after rebooting doesn't happen again until the next time I turn it on), so I'm looking for a solution now.

Has anyone seen something like this, or got any advise?

WOW!! Exactly what I'm seeing!!!

Usually occurs within 15 minutes of booting. Once a day only. I've had the computer off over 8 hours one day and when turned on it didn't happen... only the FIRST boot of the day. Works fine on any reboots after?

I have gotten random different BSOD's too.

I've also had days at a time when this didn't happen? I did nothing at all to change anything either. Then it starts happening again?

Things I have tried though:

Removed ANY unnecessary programs I had. This computer started with Vista, upgraded to W7, then W8 (when it started happening) and now W8.1, so I did collect a lot of 'junk'.

Despite MS saying the default time is 2am mine will not run unless I'm actually sitting in front of the screen working on something. I've reset it to 5pm and most days it works but not today as I was away from the screen for an hour and nothing happened. Is it just me or is it a beta glitch?
When it runs it's fine and the only thing it has found is MSN trying to hijack my Google toolbar. Sorry Microsoft but I'm happy with Google.

Answer:Scan Run Time

You need to teach that you allow your settings to be set to google. As for the scheduler I have found it to be a bit buggy as well.

New T530 with SSD takes minutes to boot to useable state:Desktop comes up fast, but continuous hard drive activity for two minutes on bootup, and screen is locked up (can't start anything).Every so often while I'm in a program the pointer goes into the rotating circle mode, also, so it appears something is popping in there. Any thoughts on why this is happening and what I can do to get the same fast boot time as my T500 with an SSD?I've gotten the most recent updates from Lenovo and Microsoft (including latest BIOS update, which didn't help).Ran MalwareBytes and CCleaner, which don't show anything bad. Very disappointed so far.

Answer:T530 Long Boot Time and Lock-Up

When it hangs while you are running, hit ctrl-alt-delete and choose task manager to see what is using CPU time. Are you using something like a domain controller for authentication? If so, is it always available? Often, this kind of problem occurs when searching for network shares

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

I am running Windows 10 on my two home computers (laptop and desktop), and it drives me crazy that the console locks after 5 minutes and we have to enter a PIN to wake it back up. My wife has pretty much stopped using the laptop because she can't stand it. I had figured out how to disable it in Windows 8.1, but it appears they removed the option to add that to the settings in Windows 10. I have been searching the interwebs for days to try and find a solution posted somewhere and I am really surprised by the lack of complaints about this. I can't believe we're the only ones who find it maddeningly annoying. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions about what to do?

Hello Forum,
To begin with i would like to congratulate the admin team for maintaining such an awesome forum. I never felt the need to register because most of my seraches landed to this site for solution except for this one, so here i am with my problem.
I have 2 week old HP pavalion notebook pc with pre-installed Windows 8.1 64bit single language. Untill few days back, when i presses windows+L the lock screen would pop up immediately. But now whenever i do it, it takes time to lock.
I clocked it and it took approx 30-35 sec to lock. I am not sure what might be the problem or if this is  al all normal behaviour. Have to look at 'Please wait' screen for 30 sec to get lock screen image.
Kindly help,

Not very descriptive, but so the computer goes.

Lets say I am updating a blog. And I refresh a number of times, once for each post.

Not always the same amount of refreshes, but eventually I get the spinner upper right, and the status bar says either 'Done' or 'Stopped'.

If I check email, first time fine. I close email. Over the next 2-5 hours, I open email again, close again, open again, Mozilla Thunderbird newest version, and it says cannot connect. The number of times it will work and then stop, varies.

To fix either, I reboot, no need to do anything else, and they work fine again.

I get the impression that if I have to connect to anything outside my home computer, this occurs. I haven't tried all software, but it happens with email, both browsers, and connecting to Everquest.

So it isn't just one type of site/server. Just anything outside my home computer. I'm the only user and admin.

Any ideas ?

I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)

However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.

With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.

Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.

Answer:Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

Hello Crosspatch,

I suppose one way would be to disable screen saver password protection to prevent it from basically locking the PC and asking for a password when you resume from screen saver.
Screen Saver Password Protection -Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums
The only drawback is that you would then need to lock the PC when you do want it to be password protected when unlocking. If you like, the desktop context menu added by either tutorial below can help make it easier to lock the PC.
Lock Computer and Turn Off Monitor - Add to Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

So, I have searched the internet for what I am trying to find but the only thing that comes up is how to add a timer that will turn the display off after a certain time WHILE the lock-screen is on. That's not what I am asking.

What I am asking is if there is a way to auto-lock the computer after a certain amount of time. I know you can activate a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and then once touched again it will show up at the lockscreen. That's not what I want. I have the lock-screen setup to play a slideshow of pictures that I want to play when not in use. (This is a 58" touchscreen display that is used to interact with a powerpoint presentation in a public area). If I leave the desktop screensaver option on, it'll turn off the lockscreen slides. Why does that matter if the slideshow is running you may be asking? Well, I have a script on the desktop of this computer that will lock the computer with a single click. This is because when someone is done doing a presentation, I want them to be able to lock the screen immediately so that when they walk away someone can't just walk by and start messing with a wide-open computer.

So, idk if this is possible or if someone has a better solution but i'd appreciate any input.

As the title says, I couldn't find it anywhere, but I was looking to have it so that after a set period of time Windows will automatically lock out the user (me). I'm not talking about having a screensaver come up, but I've seen it before, where it basically looks like the logon screen of XP, where you have to click on your name to go back into Windows, and type in your password again.

Can someone direct me to where I set this option? I thought it'd be in the standard haunts, but I don't see it anywhere.

Answer:Having windows lock-out after time (requiring password) but not screensaver

I've not seen this done outside the screensaver options, but this link has another option.

Reading more, I think what you really want is the screensaver option, but use the logon.scr with password enabled.

apologies if this has been covered before somewhere else.
I am trying to remove the time and date from the lock screen. having searched I have seen several customisation options but the only one that actually covered this specifically was to make a change in regedit:

this brought about issues relating to administrator accounts which seem to be a common problem with windows 8.1.
nearly all of the solutions were not available to me but I finally found I could make the change in regedit by changing ownership of the file and changing the format of the time to a space. unfortunately the date is still showing.
how can I remove the date?

further, just to clarify, does the original account I signed in with have full administrator privileges? are they disabled and need to be enabled?
ive seen the tutorial on the built in elevated administrator account, this didn't work on its own either. do some files require a change of ownership to be altered regardless of which account you are signed in with including the administrator account?

any help appreciated

Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

First I want to point out that the "Play a slide show on the lock screen" is not the option that I'm looking for, since it remembers the original image that was set for the lock screen after I log back in, or restart the computer.

I am looking for an option that will always load a random picture from a certain folder to appear as my lock screen, every time the lock screen appears.
So for example, I turn on the computer and I see Image #1. I log into my account and after a few minutes I lock the computer. When I lock the computer, I want to see Image #7 as the lock screen. Now I restart the computer. Windows shuts down and starts up again. I am now at the lock screen again. I want to see Image #4. (The reason why those image numbers are like that is because they're random).

So does anyone know of an option in Windows that can do that, or a 3rd party program that can do that?

Thanks so much

It costs $1.99 but it sounds like exactly what you asked for:

My son has Dell Dimension computer running Windows Vista. He has recently had problems in that when he uses Word it appears that the Caps lock is on all the time. When he comes out of this and goes to his desktop if he tries to select another programme all the programmes on the desktop are highlighted. He runs Norton and it is not showing any problems. He has tried System restore and restore last known good configuration with no avail. Is this a virus and if so what caan be done.

Answer:Caps lock on all the time and selecting all programmes from, desktop

This may be a stupid question, but I've got to ask it... He does know how to turn caps lock off, right? If he's tried this and it still doesn't work, your description of the symptoms makes me think that there's something wrong with the caps lock key that's making the keyboard think it's being pressed. (I say that because, if you click on an item and then click on another item with the shift key pressed, the PC will select all the items between the two items clicked on - which is what seems to be happening when he clicks on shortcuts on the desktop.)

The whole thing started to appear around 3 days ago. The problem is that everytime I boot, windows 10 stays on a weird lock screen without any buttons for a long long time. There are just 4 icons in the bottom right corner (shut down, accesibility, ethernet...) It sometimes manages to get to desktop, and sometimes not. Not sure what caused it, could be a recent windows update, not sure tho. I ran some HDD scans and everything turned out fine, also did a registry cleanup, tried disabling lock screen, and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions or solutions?

Answer:Windows 10 stuck at lock screen for a long time

Welcome to the TenForums @Taukonza

Could you please review your update history and see if any updates for Windows or Drivers were installed in last week?

You mentioned when you boot. Not sure if this is happening on restart or power on or both. If it is power on booting can I suggest a quick test. Open a command prompt (admin) and type

powercfg -h off

This will disable hibernation and in turn Fast Startup. Test. If no change you can re-enable by typing

powercfg -h on

After you boot have you reviewed your Event Viewer to see if Windows is kicking out any serious errors to the system log?

I wouldn't run two major AV programs at once, more likely a big one like Avast and a smaller one like SuperAntiSpyware.

So I just installed Windows 8 on my system, and it was all going smoothly, until I got to installing Steam. After I clicked through a few menus, Steam finally started to install, but the progress bar never went up. If I tried to do anything else (Open task manager, stop the installation, etc...) everything would just lock up and I couldn't do anything.

At this point my only option was to restart, so I did just that. After about an hour of waiting for Windows to boot back up, I gave up and tried to do a system repair. This failed too, so I just re-installed Windows 8. I tried this 4 times. The first few times I thought it was because I might have had incorrect chipset drivers installed, but even when I did get the correct ones, it had the same issue.

At this point my only thought is that maybe I should do all available windows updates before I start installing steam? Otherwise, I'm out of ideas for getting this to work. It's also looking like this may be some sort of hardware failure, possibly ram?

So has anyone else experienced this, or do you have advice?

Hi, when running AVG I've always hit the 'Full Scan' button and it takes about 40 minutes, does that sound about right or is it too long? (My 20GiG hd is about 80% full).

What if I select an area to scan but a virus is hiding in an unscanned area?

Yeah so,

I've been getting those "Messenger Service" popups that says stuff like "55 critical errors, download this free thingy to fix it". I tried to go to Services and shut off the Messenger service but I get an error message when I try to open the Services thing.

Also, I don;t have a virus scanner, but I tried AVG, I tried TrendMicro Housecall, I tried another one with the word Bit in the name, and my computer automatically shuts down in the middle of the scan. I know for a fact that it's not because my CPU is overheating or anything. I have some sort of virus and it's causing these problems and making everything run terribly slow and making it take way longer than it should to start up my computer.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and how to fix it? I just friggin formatted both hard-drives and it's still there. I ran McAfee's Stinger and that did nothing. When I try to run adware programs they just shut themselves down in the middle of the test.

Anyone? Anything at all you can offer for help? I'm desperate.

Haven't done one of those for a while on my main machine, so I wouldn't have a clue on what the speed time is/was.

Does anyone know of an online service that will allow a user to type in a URL (for example,, then the service will scan that specific page in realtime to see if it has any malicious code (trojans, etc)?

Something like this would be very useful for someone who is still using an older computer that may not have the very most up-to-date definitions, and yet wanted to view a page that was thought to be possibly suspicious.

Thanks for any feedback...

Answer:Scan a web page in real time?

SiteAdvisor from McAffee does something like that. I don' t think it does on demand scans, but it may be of some help. Also, Netcraft has a toolbar that helps against phishing attacks.

Hope this helps.

I have been dealing with several spyware variants that are not being resolved by Trend micro, Adaware or spybot.
They show up on Trend Micro scan as
and the third is very weird, it is three dashes ---

when I enable real time scan, I cannot access the internet.

Any suggestions. I have run hijack this but am not qualified to deal with it. Should I just rebuild the computer????

Answer:real time scan issues

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.
After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

I recently purchased Sunbelt Software's Counterspy V2 and PC tools Spyware Doctor. I ran scans with both of them only to turn up a few cookies and such. Then all of a sudden I was doing a reboot and I found an anti-spyware app doing a boot-time spyware scan. I had never seen that before and I didn't know that either of the programs I bought were able to do that. I think it may have been from Counterspy but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about it. The funny thing is, when it was doing the scan it didn't say anything about which program it was and I also don't thing it was any roque spyware cleaner.

Answer:Boot-time spyware scan

Hi, Even the free version has a bootup scanner,

"Deep-rooted malware is exterminated at boot time, before Windows loads"

That's from the features on the CounterSpy site....

Next time you restart, maybe you can be sure it is CounterSpy.

Some antivirus programs, do scan at bootup, AVG for one, does that.

It's also possible that you can set CounterSpy to not scan at startup.... since you are fairly sure that no spyware exists now, that would probably be OK to do, but you do want to look in Help for CounterSpy, or the FAQs at the site before setting it that way.

I used to wonder why my MBAM scans would increase by 5 or 10 minutes (worst time was 25 minutes) over a certain period of time. Well, I think I figured it out. I recently turned off system restore to clear my restore points (I do this from time to time just in case malware is hiding out there), and I just noticed that MBAM does a full scan in under 11 minutes. I guess it was bogged down scanning all those restore points. System restore is now back on, and scan times are around 12 minutes on average, which suits me fine.

I just did a factory reset on my pc due to some serious malfunctions caused by a nine-year-old. All well and good. I only downloaded Ninite downloader, Advanced System Care, and HijackThis (along with some add-on programs available from the asc toolbox) on my pc before doing a follow up scan to make sure no pests followed me into the fresh OS. Now, AVG is flagging various svchost.exe processes as multiple generic trojan infections. I can do back to back scans and something pops up, something different, every time. The last one was a generic37.bgxl.dropper at svchost.exe 5176. I'm thoroughly confused. Perhaps someone would be so kind as to take a look for me, before my bank account gets drained or someone logs into my facebook and messes up my GoTA? You all are awesome, thank you for your time and attention. Just let me know what you need from me. I don't wish to attach useless logs and inundate you with things you don't need.Edit: Moved topic from Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock lights no longer function

Welcome to Windows TenForums, Vaindil.

It doesn’t seem to work on anyone’s system and there doesn’t seem to be a fix yet. You can read here into the beginning of the next page if you like.

As Windows Fax and Scan facility only applies to Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate, is there a recomended alternative (free) software program for Home Premium ??Vista "Boot Safe Mode" When I used XP, I had a program that enabled an automatic "boot" that gave the option of booting into Safe Mode, without having to restart the system with your finger hovering over the F5 or F8 key to kick it into Safe Mode. Is there such a software for Vista? A few "mixed" questions that I could really do with some answersfor ...please...I know that the folowing questions do not neccesarilly fall into this Vista related forum, but having searched for answers and come up empty handed, I thought I might try my luck here.. Is there a specific forum / site where you can post multiple questions varying from Google to Vista to Firefox - basically a general forum??I know that there are some, but having posted in these forums I noticed that many of the subject "latest post" is often well over a month or so ago which signifies a severe lack of members.Re: Google - I have been trying to make google search results open in a new tab using the change to "true". Hey guys, I have been having a pretty major dilemma with my computer. So basically:
A few days ago (January 11, 2018), I downloaded the new windows update (forget the name every time ). It was initially working out quite well. Fast forward to like four o' clock, when I leave home for a few hours. I then come back to my computer, awakening it from its sleep, and then the lock screen is utterly broken. It appears as a white screen with red and green (maybe blue too???) lines running to and fro. My cursor as well appeared as a jumbled mess of black pixels. I have been dealing with this dilemma for the past few days (today is January 16 2018 at time of writing), and I have had no luck searching for help. If you have any knowledge of what is happening, or can offer help, then please offer it, that will be wonderful.
EDIT: Oh, forgot to include this, but I have tried a malwarebytes scan (probably at January 12, 2018), but it did not come up with anything important.

Every time I press caps lock, to turn on or turn off, I can't keep typing until some process completes. The icon for capson/capsoff comes onscreen, and while it's there I can't keep typing, until some time passes. Very frustrating!

Answer:caps lock function takes a long time and bogs the computer

can i disable the onscreen icon - maybe that's taking processor time

I regularly use the 24 hour time format for all of my systems.
Its not a major issue I have now with Win10, but its annoying a bit.

Before I logon to Windows 10, the default lock screen theme has the time in 12 hour format instead of the 24 hour format.
In Windows, I set everything in 24 hour time. Period. I just don't like 12 hour time.
However, when I sign out or just by locking my screen, it does show the time in 24 hour format.
But when I reboot my system it shows the time in 12 hour format.

Is this a bug or what in Win10?

Answer:Win10 Default Lock Screen theme does not show 24 Hour Time

Mine shows 24 hour.

Hi, We use lync 2013 on the t431s and it works great, except that the privacy setting for the camera is always true. You can manually turn it off without any problems, but it always returns back to on. I haven't yet found out when it does this. I tried restarting lync, rebooting, login out and in, locking... no avail. But somehow, you wait a while and poof... the privacy setting is back on. Any ideas? I found a related post:- Extra info:- All our t431s have the same problem.- our helix devices don't have this problem.

Hi folks,

In power options you can switch off the monitor only by time idle. I would like to be able to set a time of day. I can't see an inbuilt way of doing this, so does anyone know of a good application which will allow me to do this?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Solved: VISTA - need an app to set power options by time, not idle-time
