Preferred Solution: Slow computer (Slow internet browsing, loading pages, slow start up etc.)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I share a wireless router with 4 other people. All of a sudden my laptop internet speed took an extreme downturn. And it is only my laptop that has been affected, everyone elses is working at the same speed.
So usually if I ran a speedtest the download speed would sit at around 700kbp/s. Now it's barely at 80kbp/s.
The upload speed is sitting at 749kbp/s so it's pretty normal.
I've restarted my computer with no luck.
I've deleted all my cookies and temporary internet files with no luck.
I ran a virus scan (I use AVG Anti-Virus); it came up with corrupted executable file (Quicktime) so I removed that. This hasn't helped the problem.

I really don't want to have to pay heaps of money for a technician to come to my house and try and fix it. It's weird that it happened all of a sudden but I need to get it fixed.
Any ideas or suggestions? They would be MUCH appreciated as it is a very frustrating problem!

Answer:Suddenly EXTREMELY slow internet browsing and loading of web pages

Have you connected with a wired connection to the router to see if this is a wireless issue, or some other problem?

For wireless connection issues, I'd like to see this.

Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework. For machines with no Internet connection, download this NET Framework 3.5 Full Package on another machine and transfer it with removable media to the problem machine.
To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

With a wired connection, boot in Safe Mode with Networking and run this PingTest and also this SpeedTest and post the link to the results here.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Seems that my computer has good days and bad. Somedays it is extremely slow while online (but laptop connected to same network is fast). I don't know if the updates from Windows has anything to do with it, but it seems that computer slows more and more everytime an update is installed. I'm not sure if this is what you need, but here is my HijackThis log:

Hi folks,

I'm experiencing slower than normal internet browsing lately. I'm running Windows XP-Home Edition (version 2002, service pack 2) and Internet Explorer version 7.0 through a 5 meg cable modem/USB connection. It has gotten progressively slower over the past several weeks. I'm not very good at troubleshooting these type problems but I'll describe what I've tried:

1. Dumped all temporary internet files, history files, cookies, etc. under Internet Explorer> Tools > Internet Options> Browsing History> Delete All.
2. Ran "Disc Cleanup" under Windows> System Tools.
3. Defragmented C drive.
4. Scanned all drives with my security suite software (F-Secure) provided by my ISP (Charter).
5. Downloaded the freeware program "SuperAntiSpyware" and ran a complete scan. It found 7 adware programs and I let it quarantine them.
6. Called my ISP and was told that my connection looked good and my speed was within range.

None of these actions has helped and I'm stuck! This is very aggravating. Can anyone offer any suggestions on possible solutions to my problem. Please remember that I'm not very tech savvy so you might have to describe potential fixes in terms I will be able to comprehend. I will appreciate any offers of help .

Thanks for your time and patience, Mike Hannah

My computer has been slightly slower than usual...and when checking the McAfee site it stated that the 6 trojans found were that of a low threat....I'm just double checking that it didn't miss anything because my computer's been kinda slower on loading internet pages since the scan. I am aware Mcafee is not the best tool for scanning but my folks paid for my computer and the program came with it. I have to keep it til it expires. Also any advice for site advisor's that tell you which sites have viruses? Mcafee's is useless.

This is my first time posting a question on bleeping computer. We are so thankful that you are out there to help us and not rip us off. I think my computer is infected. My desktop starts up very slowly, my internet connection is slow (it's slow in pulling up websites and some never come up). I'm getting lots of pop ups (even though pop up blocker is enabled). When I go to open the control panel, a flashlight pops up as if it is looking for it (it eventually does open but it takes a while). I had a problem at one time with a lot of POS.TMP files and followed advice from posts on this site to get rid of them. Well, my current problems started when a friend downloaded a music program. I believe it was called Soundman. When I noticed the computer acting funny, I went into the control panel and deleted it along with some other programs I found (PPC Booster, P2P Max, Ron Tool Adsoftinc, Wyzo, Eco Bar). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hey guys, I just got a new Sony VAIO NS Series yesterday and I think it is satisfactory so far EXCEPT for the fact that the web pages load so slowly. For example, the pages on this website requires that I press refresh or press "enter" on the web address bar a few times for the page to load. How can this be? This computer is new! Could it just be the internet coincidentially being slow? Is it the computer's problem and should I be concerned? Thanks!

My computer can be found here along with the specs: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9370165&type=product&id=1218093001336

Im looking for some assistance on these two matters.

Firstly my Computer is taking along time to load up at start, I have only uploaded 1 new program in the last month or so and that is PPmate ( a Live steaming program).

Hi, I am a software programmer (mainly Delphi) and i have now a problem i was not able to solve with my Pc.
I suspect some kind of hacking or some serious software conflict..
I have Win XP hom sp 2. When i connect to the internet the speed is high (i have adsl) and downloads and uploads (via ftp for example) are fast as expected. Outlook is fast too. But when i have to browse web pages IE ( and Opera as well) are slow like the hell. Before loading a web page (of only 40kb) i can wait sometimes even a minute or more. Very rarely, suddenly the speed is good again but most of the times is very low, especially when i need to reach a completely different domain.
First thing i did: i ran the spysweeper trial software that found and deleted many adware and even a couple of trojans.
But the problem with my IE is still there (I even tried opera browser but it doesn't make any difference).
What is the next step to do?
Please advice, cause i am going mad..
Thanx, Francesco

Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

Someone please help!!!! My computer will not load internet pages, or if it does it is very slow. I'm surprised I was able to get to this site. I have run norton internet security, windows defender, superantispyware, and vundofix, which have all come back with no problems showing. I have cleaned everything up and got rid of many of my media files and have run a disk defrag and still the same problem. Registry mechanic will not work for some reason. Okay, here I am again. I've already posted regarding this problem, but I thought I had it fixed when I restored my computer to factory settings. No such luck, the problem has returned. This time I will be more specific about what is going on. I can not access any microsoft web pages, I can not update, I can't access my hotmail account, can't use messenger (kids are going crazy without it). I have had norton installed and ran a scan, no problems detected. Now i uninstalled it. Please let me know what to do now. I personally think it has something to do with Messenger not being compatible with Vista, so for now I've uninstalled Messenger also. What are some good free virus and spyware programs that I can run? Here is my current Hijack log.

My McAfee subscription expired and I have now loaded AVG Anti-Spyware and ZoneAlarm. Since then my PC has been a bit temperamental (sometimes slow to load web pages or not loading them at all). Could you advise if there are any problems. From time to time the PC will crash altogether and I have to switch the power off/on to get it re-started. I have recently de-fragged as well, but no real improvement in performance.
Around the same time I was trying to download IE7 and it kept failing. The Window help suggested de-activating all Firewalls (I also have SpySweeper) but it still did not complete IE7 download. I have not bothered trying anymore but wondered if something hasd got through while I had no Firewall.

I have posted aHiJack This scan in the relevant forum and Old Timer suggested posted the questin with yourselves as he was not able to see anything wrong.

I hope you can help.

Answer:Slow Running/internet Pages Not Loading

Hi there,

I use AVG and Zonealarm too, but don't experience what you are. Having said that that there could be glitched between the two that are preventing you from accessing the web.

In the meantime I would personally get hold of the latest updates for AVG, ZoneAlarm and any other spyware/adaware program, disconnect from the internet (unplug your modem/router) uninstall your current defences (AVG, ZoneAlarm etc), then add your firewall (ZoneAlarm) following the on-screen instructions then add your spyware/adware/anti-virus software and do a full system scan.

Forget about IE7, stick to IE6 (reinstall that too).

Hope that helps

Hello BC,
I have a funny but serious malware problem. When watching Jersey Shore full episodes, usually the ads played in the player- But then on one of the episodes, when the video player went to advertisement, an advertisement "popped up" blackening the whole screen. I thought this was unusual since the ads usually had been playing embedded within the player. I (mistakenly) clicked the "X" to get out of it. Following this, an ad began to play within the player per usual.

After the embedded advertisement began to play, I immediately got malware on my computer. My bottom-left icons began to change, and my antivirus appeared hijacked because a message appearing from avast popped up alerting me that I had been infected with a "worm". I knew immediately that I had been infected with something, and that the message was originating from the 'worm'.

I immediately shut down my computer and restarted in safemode. I attempted to perform an avast virus scan and windows defender scan-nothing. I then restored my computer back to a restore point created a few days prior using the System Restore function. I then started up in safe mode and attempted to Uninstall the Firefox browser from which I had acquired the virus. Firefox would not uninstall itself from Add or Remove Programs so later on I manually deleted (most?) of the firefox files.

Hi, I'm on a Windows XP Home, Toshiba Laptop, SP2, and yesterday I downloaded a file that was, unknown to me, loaded with trojans....I used SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes to remove them, and those scans now come clean....However, now my internet pages, no matter what browser I'm using, load REALLY slow, for example to get this page to load took about 2-3 minutes, where as before it would be pretty much instant, as you can imagine this is very frustrating....I have ran CCleaner as well, and right now am running Auslogics Disk Defrag, but nothing is helping, any suggestions would be great, thanx....

I had a malware trojan blackbird on my computer and have recently removed it. i have cleaned out my internet option, cookies, anything i can. i have SUPERantispyware, avast, and a few other spyware and virus programs i downloaded and have gotten rid of because they found nothing after avast and super... scans. i also have a process viewer to see what program is running. nothing looks out of the ordinary or stands out. Another problem is when I'm viewing a page my computer usage jumps to 100%. i can not view multiple pages like i used to be. i have defraged, removed files i do not need. practically cleaned my system out. I have read to many forums and post and my brain is starting to bug out. Does anyone know anything that i am lacking? also its not my internet connection because my roommates comps work fine. any ideas would be deeply appreciated or should i just get a new comp?. I am on a dell inspiron 600m.

Lately, my computer has been very, very slow, with some pages just not opening at all. I fear I may have come across some sort of bug, amongst other things. Yesterday, while typing, the letters were entering the browser at a snail's pace, and some were just changing--on their own! Some of my online games (Text Twist in particular) just won't load at all, as happens with some web sites. I also have something on my desktop that I just can't delete--and I've tried everything. Watching videos is just awful because it's stop-and-go--if they ever load at all. I'd also like to know what I can remove or delete from my desktop (I already have too many items in my "start" menu", so I can't put them there). I try to use disk cleanup as much as possible, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'd also like to know how to add memory to my computer, as it seems I don't have much. Just before my transition from Comcast to Verizon, my computer went through hell, which may or may not have been the cause as It's worse now than before. Thank you for your help.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

My internet started to become slow out of no where and I didn't mess with my router/modem or any computer settings so I'm guessing it's a hardware problem. Pages take a while to load, some don't load (Unable to connect to webpage message), or sometimes they won't load completely. I've had this happen 3 times over the past years, even with different routers/modems/ISP's, my internet would be working normally for a few months and then it'd dramatically get slower. I've always thought it was my router causing the problems, potentially screwing up and degrading my modem's performance. It must be that Netgear routers are awful, as that's the only brand of routers I've had over the years.

I'm on my desktop, and have my modem connected to my router. I'm connected to the internet via cable since my desktop doesn't have WiFi.
Got 58mb/s download speed and 12mb/s upload speed on speedtest. Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

Edit: I have the same problem with every browser if you're wondering.

Ok I just got my virus/spyware situation resolved earlier today but now my internet connection is really sluggish. I took the recommendations given by greynight in the anti-spyware tutorial and downloaded and installed all the things listed there. However now my interent is hardly running. I'm not sure what to do. I have dsl and my interent is running as though it's on a very bad dial up connection at best. This is just terrible.

I'm not sure where I should be posting this. I chose here because I feel these problems are a result of programs I may have downloaded after coming to this part of the forum.

Please help or direct me to the appropriate area.

Thank you,
Zelda...

Answer:super slow internet pages not loading or are timing out please help

Download HiJackThis - this program will help determine if there's any malware on your computer.

1. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.

2. Click on the "Unzip" button to install the newer version.

3. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\

4. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose - Do a system scan and save a logfile.

5. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on Save log.

6. Post the HiJackThis.log file

Purchased a Compaq V6210 with Vista Home Premium. Works great, but decided to get a different notebook and my sister will get this one.

Purchased a Gateway with Vista Home Premium. OK notebook, but 4200 rpm HD was too slow AND it took literally 1-2 minutes to load web pages (via wireless) that the Compaq loads in 2-3 seconds (or less).

Don't know what caused this and didn't care because I was returning it anyway.

Purchased a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 (Intel Core Duo T5200, 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM) with Vista Home Premium. Great notebook, but has the same slower than dialup web-surfing characteristics of the Gateway. Don't have a clue what the most likely cause of this is. Can't do a clean re-install because none of the manufacturers include the Vista install disk, just the lame restore CD (except the Gateway, got to hand it to them there, they included a restore disk and a true Vista install disk).

Perhaps there is a simple fix for this? Someone told me to remove Toshiba's Config Free. Tried that and it didn't help. Any ideas?

Running Windows XP. Internet Explorer 7
Internet Explorer constantly giving not responding message.  Pages are slow to load, some never load.  Constantly getting Not Responding Message and Internet Explorer becomes completely unresponsive.  This problem just seemed to begin several days ago.

Steps that I have taken to help problem:
Updated MalwareBytes and ran scan.  I also ran MalwareBytes in Safe Mode.  Scans showed nothing found.
Ran scan on Microsoft Essentials. Scans show nothing.
Made sure all Windows Updates are up to date (I have windows firewall turned on and have automatic updates turned on)
I have run a scandisk/checkdisk.  I believe it said it repaired one bad sector
I also have AFT Cleaner installed, which I run about once a week
I have no other malware or virus protection installed other than MalwareBytes and Microsoft Essentials.
Computer analyzed and said I did not need to defragment
Only using 25-30% if harddrive
Checked with Internet provider.  They said we are having no problems in my location area.

The only program I have installed in the last several months is Skype

Any suggestions.

Answer:Internet Explorer Slow, not loading pages, not responding

Hi

How other browsers work ?. My personal choice is chrome and it works fine for me.Your IE version is 7 and it is fairly outdated. Latest is IE10 but Microsoft didn't even released IE 9 for XP. Sticking with an outdated browser is a security risk. Also a large number of websites require at least IE 8 or higher. I strongly recommend consider using an alternative browser or at least upgrade the Internet explorer version to 8.

A couple of weeks ago pages started to load very slowly on my desktop when using Firefox. I suspected my Belkin wireless adaptor as my laptop was working fine with Firefox and the same BT home hub,and same security (Comodo Firewall and Avast). Having bought a new wireless adaptor I still have the same problem. The internet connection signal is good and the Avast boot time scan shows clear. I suspect, therefore, this may be a Vista issue. Any ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received.

Answer:Internet Connection good but pages slow loading

Disable your Windows firewall if it is enabled and see what that does to your connection speed. Try disabling the Comodo as well.

Hi,

1.My laptop takes 10 mins to start up.
2.The internet page goes pale and says not responding when i start the internet up.
3.My laptop takes agestoshut down.
4 When i write text on internt pages there is a delay in the text coming on the screen
Any ideas on how i can solve thse problems?

Answer:Slow Laptop..slow starting up and loding internet pages

1. Software
a) Clear out all temporary files and folders -- use CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
b) Scan for malware spyware and viruses --Free Anti Spyware :-
Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Free Antivirus software
MicroSoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security/products/mse.aspx
Avast http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download
c) Clean the registry -- Use the tool in Crap Cleaner its very safe and also allows you to back up the registry first.
d) Pagefile (Virtual Memory) -- Right click MY Computer - select properties - Advanced tab - Performance -
advanced tab - Virtual memory click change, you can put the page file on a different drive (if you have one), click
custom size and set Initial size to one and a half times the amount of memory you have fitted i.e. 512MB memory
= set to 768MB, set maximum to double your memory amount i.e. 512MB memory = 1024MB click ok.
If your hard drive is full and there is not enough room for the pagefile this can slow down, freeze or even cause the
PC to crash (restart).
e) Cut down on the programs that load at start up -- Start - Run type msconfig - start up tab- untick everything except for firewall, antivirus and antispyware
and the services that run in the background. http://www.blackviper.com/
2. Hardware

I've been getting a problem utilizing Firefox and even IE (which I prefer not to use). Basically, pages have been loading pretty slow recently. At first I thought it wasn't that unusual, but when playing games online (WoW specifically), I'm not getting any high ping or latency issues. I also don't get any slow down on downloads, which is puzzling me. I only have problems just going on the internet.

There are also moments when I have to re-enter an internet address multiple times. For example, if I were to enter "gmail.com" on the address bar, it won't load, but still say "Done" at the bottom as if it loaded a web page or something. I'm afraid I might have some keylogger or some malicious content. Should I start changing passwords for e-mail services and anything else that requires a password?

I tried running Ad-aware, Spybot, and Symantec to clear up any issues, but I still have the same problem.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Hi, I just got Comcast internet a few weeks ago. They supplied us with a Motorola sb5120 surfboard modem. Ive noticed that it gets really slow, I mean soooo slow that 56k beats it by a lot. The downloads of the web start at 25k and diminish to nothing and the download cancels.

The Internet did run great the first week or so, it recently did this.

Oh yea and if it means anything, In task manager under the networking tab it says Network Utilization is under 1% most of the time and other times its jumping around like crazy {ex. 17%, 2%, 3%, 14%, 8%, 1%, 16%}

Well thanks to anyone who can help!!

Hello, I have a Dell 5558 Inspiron.  the internet is very slow to load.  My wife has a macbook pro that runs circles around my PC for web browsing.  I have tried various tricks to minimize startup functions and background apps.  is this a hardware issue that can be upgraded?  would upgrading the GPU, upgrading to SSD, or adding more RAM help?

Answer:slow internet loading, slow youtube response: Dell 5558

also, this unit has an intel AC-3160 wifi card.  can this be upgraded or adjusted to work better?

Please can someone take a look at my reports.

My PC has become slower in the past few months, it takes ages to start and often crashes/freezes when browsing the internet. This happens with both IE and Firefox.

I've run some of the free anti virus programmes but they've not made much difference.

Thank you.

Hello,

My name is Aman and I'm trying to fix my parents CPU. They have a tendency to download a lot of crap without first checking that the source is legit.

The CPU runs Windows 7 64 bit.

The specific issues are when Chrome or IE are being used. The browsers are always redirected to searchnu/406. I have changed the start page back to google and that works at startup, but when a new window is opened it goes back to ask.com. I have also noticed that pages are regularly not loading fully and it takes 3-4 times hitting the reload button to finally load, sometimes they don't load at all. I am also noticing that the internet connection seems slower than before (they have ATT DSL) and the cpu in general is running a bit slow.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Aman

Answer:Slow Loading Internet Pages - Whirling Hard Drive Noise

You can test the HDD using the drive manufacturers disk tools (available from the drive manufacturers website). Run the short and long test. That will verify the drive is good (or bad). Any errors on either test and the drive is likely faulty.

With that said, drive usage/access in and or itself does not indicate a problem.

I'm having trouble with pages not loading when I'm on the internet (using Netzero and Internet Explorer). It seems to be secure pages mostly (every time I want to order something online, or when I go to a company's application center and try to apply for a job.) The pages aren't just timing out and trying to refresh over and over again doesn't help.
Also, I am on my second printer (HP 3740). Granted, it's not top of the line, but I just bought it because my old one was broken (I thought) and now it is starting to have the same problems as the last one, and the problems started about a week after I bought it. It started with the printing getting faded, like the cartridge (which is brand new) was running out of ink, then it went through the motions of printing but no ink was on the paper. Next it will stop moving, even though the power light comes on. That's what the first printer did anyway.
Besides that the computer is incredibly slow. I know that NetZero isn't the fastest server, but I've been with them for about a year and these problems started about 6 months ago. That was about the time my boyfriend decided he knew everything about computers and started adding and deleting software like it was going out of style. I'm pretty sure this is all his fault but I'm not sure how to fix it now.
Please help!! I know enough about computers to get online, but that's about it.

My laptop has recently started acting up when it comes to using the internet. I have tried unplugging the router and clearing cookies. Firefox is loading pages extremely slow and will not load some pages like Facebook at all. Please help me if you can. Thanks!

Answer:Laptop internet issues - Firefox running extremely slow and not loading some pages

Re: Laptop internet issues - Firefox running extremely slow and not loading some page

You cleared out just your cookies?
In Firefox press Crtl + Shift + Del you shall them be prompted with the catagories for tempory files to do with FF, clear all the ones you deam you can (maybe not passwords).
Once you have done that lets do a quick little maintenance run on your machine just to make sure they is nothing else bogging down FF.

Click Start then Run (or Windows Key + R) then type Cleanmgr and hit enter. It may take a while to do the first stage where it is organising the files it can deal with especially if you havn't done this for a long time.
Once this is done check all the types of files you wish to clear and click ok to delete those files.

Do you have anything like SmileyCentral or web search bars installed? If so lets type removing/disabling them. Start -> Control Panel -> (Set to classic view) -> Add/Remove Programs. Thumb through the list and remove any of the earlier mentioned types of programs.

Also I suggest you run Spybot search and Destroy and an Anti Viral check on your machine just to be safe.

Please tell me if any of this works or what the situation is like when you have done this and from there we can batt on with some more ideas

Good Luck.

Antony.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Apologies for the late response. I don't see the Ark.txt. Did you have problem running GMER?

If you still require assistance, we would like to see the latest state of your system. So, please try getting a report from GMER with the instructions below and also post a fresh DDS log as it has been a while since you posted, and we'll take it from there.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

I have followed ALL of the step-by-step instructions, as advised, before posting. Here are my specs: Win XP Media Center Edition; Version 2002; SP 2; AMD Athlon 64 processor; 3400+; 2.39 Ghz; 896 MB of RAM (anyone want to also tell me why this is when the front of my pc says "1024 MB RAM"??). My problems are my pc is ridiculously slow - this includes web browsing and just generally doing anything on here; super-slow startups and shutdowns. I ran pc-cillin, no viruses or malware; ran lavasoft, had a couple of cookies I removed; spybot picked up nothing; panda picked up 3 instances of spyware but I didn't know what to do about it as it wanted me to buy it to remove them and I couldn't tell where they originated; etrust online scanner picked up nothing; windows defender picked up nothing. Erm hi. Last night my PC was absolutely fine, and today it seems to be completely broken.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... Answer:Slow boot, slow application loading, slow shutdown

I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

Thanks again.

My computer is very slow to boot up, slow to load IE home page (MSN) and very slow to open any programs. I have run Adaware, A2 anti malware and Spybot and cleaned all that I found as far as malware, spyware, etc. but to no avail. The lights almost constantly shows my hard drive is working. Mod Edit: Moved to appropriate forum ~~ boopme... Or maybe slowly over a week or two.
I have an older computer, Dell P4 - 2.8GHz 1.49GB Ram running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP3.  It has an 80GB harddrive (71.1 GB) and 25.0GB free.
I updated FireFox from 17.... to 23.... to see if that would help and... nope.I download a file using Utorrent and it moves it to an offline USB drive hooked to my WNDR3700-100NAS router.  I have a Motorola Surfboard SB6141.
 Utorrent version 2.2.0 build 23071
I have been set-up like this for awhile now and things have been fine.  Even with Utorrent open, not uploading or downloading, you could surf the web with no issues.  If it was downloading a files, you could still surf the web with no issues.  I only get about 2.5mb down on my file a 22mb connection. Now, not so much.  With it just open, I can't do hardly anything and it takes forever to load even the front page of Yahoo and I can't click on any of the links.  If I'm downloading - forget about it.  I upgraded to 3.2.2 build 28500 and same issue.  I then installed 2.2.1 build 25154 which is what i have now installed and the same issue.  I had to close it to get to this site.  I run Avira Free Antivirus Product Version 13.0.0.4045 and Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro version 1.75.0.1300.  Both have Web Protection / Website blocking turned off.
I've scanned and found no Malware or Viruses or eve... Read more

Hello!

Can someone please help me? I am writing this from a dimly-lit Polish internet cafe with a slow
internet connection. I came here because my Toshiba laptop (windows xp) has been running painfully
slowly. My livelihood depends on my computer and internet working!! Apparently I have caught a virus
and/or malware, but I cannot even post a HijackThis report, because my internet connection is too slow,
either on DSL or 3-G, to even download the Hijack This program!!!

The internet speed in this internet cafe is a measly 8 megabytes. It takes too long to download from
this internet cafe.Would someone possibly be willing to send me the latest Hijack Program by email to: [email protected]? That way I could download it from the USB drive and run it on my
computer and post the results here.

Please help me. Thank you.

Larry

Well, this is my HijackThis log. I've seen many people having problems with their computers use this program and post their logs on tech support forums like this who were able to receive the needed help. I'm not really that good with computers so I can't say for sure what I know what is contributing to the sluggish speed of the internet browsing and just the general opening/moving applications and files on Windows. I've tried Ad-aware and it has worked successfully for me before with other things, but for this problem I haven't got much found items on Ad-aware. It makes it seem like my computer is free but obviously not. My internet browsing is slow as heck and even just moving about on Windows is a hassle. So, if anyone could please check out this log and see if there could be any potential problem that I missed. Thanks alot!

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible.
Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it?s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then back on to remove the infection from the restore folder and create a clean restore point.

Please go to at least two of these sites and run an online Virus Scan.
Be sure to have the AutoFix box(es) checked.

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me.  My computer starts kind of slow, and I feel like it is running a little slow also.  I thought it would be a good idea to un-check some of the start-up things after going into misconfig, but I do not know what any of the items are.  Is there an easy way to make my computer start faster.  Also, when I am on the computer, I hear the tower making noise like it is doing something, as though there was some kind of background process going on that I don't know about.  I am running McAfee and I am pretty sure I do not have any kind of virus.  Please help.

Answer:start slow, runs slow and makes noise when I am simply typing on computer

Oh Yeah, I am running windows XP that came with the computer a year ago when I bought it.  It has an 80 gig hard drive and I think 1 gig of memory.  Thanks in advance to anyone's response.

Can someone please help me analyse this log? It appears that I had the Virtumonde virus which spyboy detected and VundoFix virus (which Avast detected and removed as I reboot) since last Wednesday, May 14th, there was no system restore date available at the time so since then I've run Spybot, Spydoctor, Avast, cleaned out startup, removed useless programs, ran diskcleanup and defrag, xspy and still my applications (especially MoZILLA & INTERNET EXPLORER) are crawling at startup and I don't understand why?? I am trying to save all my files instead of reinstalling Windows XP. I would appreciate any help from people with knowledge of these log files.thank you!!! thank you!!! so much for any help.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 10:54:10 PM, on 5/19/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\avast\aswUpdSv.exeC:\Program Files\avast\ashServ.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\CTsvcCDA.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\tcpsvcs.exeC:\... Hello southflgirl,We need to create a Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) Log Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from one of the links below and save to your Desktop. Primary Mirror Secondary Mirror DSS will do the following: 1. Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista. 2. Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives. 3. Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review. 4. Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using Deckard's System Scanner. 1. Close all applications and windows. 2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. 3. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious. 4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad: main.txt <-- Will be maximized extra.txt <-- Will be minimized 5. If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. 6. Please copy (<Control>+C) and paste (<Control>+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that DSS is trying to access the Internet; espec... Read more

Answer:Not Again! Slow PC, Slow Start Up, Slow Outside of Internet

Hello justanotherguy,

You continue to get reinfected because you are still running unpatched XP.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from.

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting up and I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs. If it does respond (such as clicking on internet explorer), upon closing out the program it will not respond again without a manual shut down.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal settings". Takes longer than it usually would.

#3 Shut down is slower or will freeze. All desktop items and desktop will be clear, leaving just background, as usual before a shut down, and will freeze leaving the arrow cursor still there. Sometimes it can get past this after a wait and get stuck on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen. And never shut down. This requires a manual shut down by pressing the PC's button.

Hi,

I appear to be having trouble with my firefox browser.

My operating system is Windows 8.1. I have an Acer Aspire V3-772G which I bought some 18 months ago.

System details:

Processor: Intel® Core i7-4202MQ 2.2GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
Installed Memory (RAM) 16.00 GB DDR3 L Memory
System  type: 64-bit Operating, x64- based processor

A few days ago my firefox browser, which for no apparent reason at all, just seemed to slow to a stupendously very slow loading of pages. I had recently just been working on an issue in which I posted a thread regarding whether there was a possible virus/malware after google chrome terminated with the following message from Hitman Pro Alert:

Attack Intercepted
'Google Chrome 49' has been terminated to prevent execution of malicious code. Please check your computer for malware and software updates

As it happened, it appeared to be because of a conflict somewhere in the Google Chrome, Trusteer Rapport and Hitman Pro Alert combination, and so the only way was to change the settings on Hitman Pro Alert as advised and shown in my thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/611273/possible-virus-or-malaware/

However, there was no malware or virus detected by my own Avast or Malwareware bytes tools, and the tools used as instructed in the thread also showed my system to have none. Also, google chrome works fine, and my computer has not slowed in any way. My fir... Read more

Answer:Computer loading internet very slow

Hello, my name is Pizza and Pepsi and I will be trying to help you solve your problem.
Besides the internet, is anything else slow?

Try to run these scanners:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
Post the log back here.

Hello,

I was here a few months ago, with my computer/firefox running slow.

I've had malwarebytes anti malware  running ever since.
A couple weeks ago the computer has literally come to grinding halt.
When I start the computer it takes a couple of minutes to go from the "Starting Windows" screen to the Windows login screen.
From there it take another 3-5 minutes to boot up. I have Soluto installed and I watch all the programs that are being started during boot up and how much extra time has elapsed for everything to load.

I've run spybot search and destroy,  Avast, eset, and SuperAntispyware and nothing has been detected.
All programs have a large lag time from when i dbl click the icons to start them.  They run slow, I type something and there is a delay before I see it on the screen. Also I'm always seeing the "not responding" message.

Here is the speccy link:

I also have the hijackthis and minitoolbox report.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!

Hey,

Out of the blue, my computer started getting slow. Sometimes its ok, and then it will be on the verge of freezing.. then get itself back together. I realized, when I start up, it takes FOREVER. It also shows this screen I have never seen before. Its completely black, and has a line of grey rectangles from side to side... and slowly loads across. When it is finally finished(10-15 minutes) it will slowly start up in regular fashion. Any ideas? I will attach a hijack this in my next post.

Thanks Much.

I have been experiencing strange issues on my laptop this past month. First off, I have to say I once installed a program called SSPro or System Surveillance Pro to see how it worked. I followed instructions on how to remove it, but I am not sure if files still exist that are causing problems. In addition, I ran an Panda Active Scan and had found a file called KillProcwin.A and also followed some other instructions on how to remove that. Anyway, I notice that my computer in general is very slow to start up. Then when I try to do Internet searches or simply click within a web page, it freezes up. I do Ctrl-alt-del when pages are not responding and have to end programs. I also notice that when I shut down my computer I see a message about having to end program hpcmpmgr.exe. I have tried to shut down/restart several times today. The last time I opened Internet Explorer I received a message, "Instruction at 0x7c910193 referenced memory at 0x1440db62. The memory could not be 'written.' Click OK to terminate or CANCEL to debug. This is becoming extremely frustrating so any help on these issues is much appreciated. Hi

I am baffled by this. When i open IE6 it takes over a minute for the webpage to appear and meanwhile i cant minimise it etc...... It looks like the program is failing to respond but doesn't say so. Once loaded browsing is normal, althought every time a separate IE window is opened the initial slow response applies followed by normal browsing.

Maybe unrelated but my PS/2 keyboard socket has stopped working (test with 2 other keyboards) and i am now using a USB keyboard.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi . I have a issue with my internet , i browse using fire fox but several specific sites are now very , very slow if they load at all as often incorrect when loaded (ebay , Facebook ) while others are fine.

The internet is via BT Broadband , i would assume it is not a issue with this as other sites are working fine.

Any suggestions that i could try to correct the issue.
