Preferred Solution: Slow Internet, downloads stalling, very slow computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Slow Internet, downloads stalling, very slow computer

Here is what I got. I am not sure what to do with this information or where I go from here.

This site is literally a cluster F (making it hard to find anything on my own). Sure maybe those who are on here often can find stuff but not those with computer problems that come here JUST for help.

All I need is a list of which programs to use to get a complete virus, trojan, tracker, spy etc. Seems pretty basic but yet there seems to be no where easy to find this info. please point me in the right direction.

also I keep getting a zone alarm note saying "The firewall has blocked Internet access to your computer (Telnet) from 85.175.27.61 (TCP Port 4723) [TYCP Flags: S]" althought the IP changes. What is up with that?

so basically 2 questions:
1-how to get started running scans (have avg 8.0 and found nothing)
2-what is this zone alarm note telling me and what can I do about it?

Thanks for helping me with this frustrating time. My PC is almost unusable.

ps just got note from zone alarm again. this is kinda freaky.

Michael

Answer:slow and stalling computer

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys. ~ Courtesy of boopmePlease download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that... Read more

new install of windows 8 pro 64 bit, 4 gigs ram 500 gig hard drive 7200 rpm sata. amd a4-3400 processor,
my problem is when my pc resumes from screen saver and I log in, my internet is extremely slow to go to web sites, it just sits there waiting to go, it does this for about 5 mins then all speed resumes great on all web browsers. it only does this for 5 mins after a resume from screen saver.
I know it is not my speed I have 50 Mps download and 5 up with roadrunner.
anyone else experience this issue and how to fix it?

Answer:internet stalling or very slow immediatly after resume fro

I'm not sure why network connection would be lagging after resuming from sleep but it may have to do with the power saving feature.

Have you tried turning off the power saving feature by going into the properties of the network adaptor, Device Manager>Network adaptors>Properties then to the Power management tab, uncheck the power saver there.

There are also some adjustments for the network adaptor in Device Manager>Power Options>Change Advanced Power Settings, from there you can try different levels of power saving to see which ones work best for you.

Wireless: AT&T Expresscard

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Hello,

My name is Aman and I'm trying to fix my parents CPU. They have a tendency to download a lot of crap without first checking that the source is legit.

The CPU runs Windows 7 64 bit.

The specific issues are when Chrome or IE are being used. The browsers are always redirected to searchnu/406. I have changed the start page back to google and that works at startup, but when a new window is opened it goes back to ask.com. I have also noticed that pages are regularly not loading fully and it takes 3-4 times hitting the reload button to finally load, sometimes they don't load at all. I am also noticing that the internet connection seems slower than before (they have ATT DSL) and the cpu in general is running a bit slow.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Aman

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Hi,

i am having quite a few problems with my laptop that i am hoping you can help me with if at all possible!

1. When booting up the computer it can take anything up to twenty / thirty minutes for the computer to be useable. After this time ti will generally work ok, but the whole time the red light on the hard disk access is constantly either flashing or solidly on.

2. A few times now I have had a pop up coming up trying to take me to a link stating that my copy of windows is not genuine. i know that the windows I have installed is 100% genuine and has not changed. I have not clicked on any links that it was offering as I believed it to be false. i have checked on the actual windows update section of the computer and this allowed me to access as normal and to check for updates without any warnings.

3. A number of times the computer will completely grind to a halt again with the red hard disk access light on solidly and will freeze for anything up to five minutes and then work fine again for a period of time.

4. About a week ago I had an issue where the laptop would not close down at all. This was despite trying the shutdown button. In the end I had to force the computer to turn off by pressing and holding the power button. i then ran CCleaner and this seemed to cure the problem.

5. I have had a number of times where the computer has 'blue screened' crashed and rebooted itself. i didn't get chance to see what the messages were. Each time the computer app... Read more

Answer:Very slow computer booting up, stating that windows is not genuine, halting/stalling

Hello mr_teacher,

Thank you for taking the time to explain the issues you're having. The detail was most helpful.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save it to your desktop.
Note: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware may require a reboot to complete removals. After a reboot, if required, post that saved log in your next reply.

Is there any improvement in machine behavior?

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

This started yesterday, when I opened google, Bing or Yahoo, The graphics took a very long time to load. This also happened on Facebook when a video took nearly 10 minutes to load. I checked the internet speed using 3 different programs and all of them gave nearly the same measure of 3.5 Mbps. I thought at first that this was due to the DOS hack that was done but now I'm, not so sure. My computer is set up as a wireless connection to the router and nothing has changed. I've recycled the router and that didn't help. Any suggestions?

Answer:Slow downloads from the internet

Internet speed is from your computer to the provider. (3.5 Mbps is quite slow this days).
Access speed can be very different as it passes though many servers or nodes. Yes, the hack attack can be related and responsible.
Wait some days till things get normal.

I currently pay for a 256 kbps connection from a local cable company, and have been fairly disappointed with the performance. When downloading things, my download rate is at about 30 kbps max. Limewire and Blizzard both have problems downloading at above a 2kbps mark. I've done several speed tests and it showed my connection at about a 60kbps mark, which is completely unacceptable in my opinion. I called the cable company and showed them the screenshots. They ran the exact same tests and it then showed that my connection was at a 260 kbps mark. For the rest of the day, my connection was great. The next morning I got on my computer and lo and behold, my internet was as sluggish as usual. Shouldn't my internet be going much faster than it currently is?

So my first week on Windows 10 downloads and internet speed were fast but have since went down the drain. From big files to small files. I couldn't figure it out. So to fix this...
1. Updated network drivers
2. Ran Ccleaner and checked dns cache
3. Rebooted PC
4. Windows 10 is fully updated and drivers also
I than called my ISP and upgraded from 100Mb internet to there fastest package 1GB based on maybe I was just running out of bandwidth (which was just a guess, but knew with 1GB internet absolutely everything should be burning fast) and tech at the house said he was getting 900Mb wired and 300Mb wireless. Prior to the upgrade. Was 80Mb wired and 30-35Mb wireless
I was going to run a program through IE or Chrome that can tell if my ISP is throttling me back but need to download Java Runtime to be able too and that 44mb Java app has taken 9-10 minutes to download.
I haven't ran the package to see if my isp is throttling me or not but any kind of download should be lightning fast now. But everything is just as slow as before my upgrade. The first week on windows 10 and on windows 8.1 was just so much faster.
I wanna repeat that for the last 6 months on 100Mb internet there has been nothing but speed. 5mb torrent downloads. Fast app downloads from other sources. YouTube buffered really fast. The only thing that seems faster now is webpage loading which seems really snappy.

Answer:Downloads really slow on 1GB Internet

Connect directly to your modem. Run speed test. See if issue is modem or router etc.

There is a Dell Vostro 400 Desktop (dual Core), 1 GB of RAM, at work that has progressivley decreased in performance. The internet rarely connects, downloads are really slow and general performance has decreased over time. It is connected on a network with many other computers and is directly hooked up via an Ethernet connection. The other computers connected to the same network seem to be fine. I have done many scans looking for malware/spyware, but it seems to be clean. I was going to reformat the hard drive and start again with factory restore. However, I decided to bring it home and connect it to my Verizon Fios connection. I have 20/5 download and upload speeds. I noticed that the Internet speed was fast and downloads were quick. I am assuming at work that the connection speed is slower! However, I do remember this computer being alot quicker 6 months ago on the same connection at work. Should I call comcast (work ISP) or what other reason could be affecting the PC at work. Thanks.

Answer:Slow Internet and downloads!

Sounds like this PC has a network issue that you can only replicate at work. If you did not have this issue in the past and its only this PC then you should look at what this pc is doing online using a free firewall like zone labs. You may not see the issue at home because you have more bandwidth available where as at work there are several systems and less bandwidth.

I have relatively okay internet, 30-40 download and 15-20 upload. I download games on steam at 3 mb/s, but for some reason, all browsers, but internet explorer is the fastest out of them all, download very slow. The most I download at is 300kb/s and that's
when it's night time when all of my family is sleeping. Though on steam and origin even throughout the day when the net is under heavy usage (3 netflixs, me, my brother, and my father playing internet games, sister and mother on facebook constantly) at 2-3mb/s.
I watched a lot of videos of some configuration thing to optimize it for download speed but came out with no luck, any help would be appreciated.

Hey,

First post here, i have been using forums quite a bit just browsing though to help my self with any problems i come across, but i have come to a dead end.

I have been running Windows 7 Home Premium since the 18th December first installation there was no problems every thing went fine.
Then last week i had to reinstall WoW as i was getting alot of BSOD "Memory Management" errors which i linked to the game as it was the only time i got it as has a couple of my friends.

When i came to reinstall WoW it wouldnt let me, kept arising with "installer has stopped working" every time, so i decided to format and start again wish a fresh install, seens as i didnt have much on pc to loose.

With he installation problem now fixed, i cannot get my internet to work, I have a Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) ethernet adapter, it has the most recent driver (which i used on the first installation of windows).

Yet when i first load up the pc it works with the full 10mb (Virgin Media) connection i have, after about 5 mins of being online i notice a massive reduction in performance and run an isp speed test and this confirmed i was only running at 1.98mb connection....

I have tryed several of the ideas that are around disable IPv6 etc to no avail.

I have also ran the pc in safe mode with networking and i get the same results, 5 mins of full connection then a drop in line speed.

Does any one have any ideas as to what could be the cause of this?

Thanks in Advance

Answer:Slow internet speeds/downloads

The latest driver came out a few days after your first installation. Maybe this one is newer than the one you tried before. It's dated 12/22/10. version 7.011

Maybe try one of the alternate download sites. There are many complaints about the Realtek RTL8168 dropping connections with Windows 7, they all seem to point at the driver as the source of the problem. Maybe try one of the older Vista drivers.

It also might work if you just uninstall the old driver you have now and let Windows automatically install a new one. People have reported that to work for them.

Also make sure that the adaptor isn't going to sleep by checking in the Advanced Power Options control panel.

Just bought a Linx 1010 for my wife to use in her capacity as a school governor. Very happy with it except it takes an age to load, for example, a photo in a classified ad, speed is OK otherwise, my old pavilion g8 is just fine on the same router. So my question is why, what is it in a laptop that restricts this download speed and what do I look for in the specs for my g8 replacement?

Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features.
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Computer displays the following :
3.8 windows experience index
Intel pentium dual 2.0Ghz  processor
64 Bit

Has Ccleaner installed
has Comodo antivirus and Comodo cleaning essentials installed.
All virus scans  find no infections,  and report that all is well and protected.  ( B/C of the way the computer is operating i'm doubting that and betting there is an infections of some sort)

I Have run Comodo cleaning essentials and  results find no abnormalities or infections.
Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.
have run rKill  and it  finds  no abnormalities  or infections.
All virus scan results  find no infections.
Windows updates is activated  and  all latest updates have been installed.... Read more

Hi flywelder Maybe we aren't looking at an infection here. There's tons of reasons why a system can slow down, and not all of them are malware related. Let's try to take a look at this issue under another angle shall we?MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. What kind of internet connection do you use? If on dial up for example, it will be a lot slower than dsl or cable.

Hi

I've been searching for the whole week. I checked with my ISP, and looked for a mysterious RWIN entry. My problem is, I can only download files at tops of 50kbs. My internet is slower than it should be, but ok.This is the same on multiple websites. And its not my ISP, because my laptop on the same network works like a charm. Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Internet works, Downloads slow.

Hi, I have recently started having problems with my desktop. I am running vista and have recently installed several programs (firefox, roxio). I have also tried a little vista tweaking to speed up my internet which is very slow.

The download speed tests show anywhere from <50 and going down when I abort them to around 300. My laptop running through the wireless router gets about 1200.

I am unable to download almost anything that takes more than 5 seconds because the download hangs.

I was able to download and run the hijack this and dss.exe. The log is following. BTW, my pc-cillin does not load after running the dss and hijack. I don't know if this a result of these or one of the other desperate measures I have tried in the last 4-5 hours of trying to figure this out.

Thanks again for any help you can offer:

I am currently using a Dell Laptop with Windows Vista, and I'm connected to the internet using a Linksys wireless router. My internet connection is working fine right now and I can connect to the internet fine. But when I try and download something, like a song or a game, I only get speeds of like 10-15 KB per second, which is very slow for this computer.

This problem started like three days ago, and I don't remember installing any new programs in recent memory...

Does anyone have an idea why this could be happening?

Answer:My internet works fine, but downloads are very slow...

Make sure your router connection has security enabled (a password and whatnot from the router settings). People around you may be using your connection and this might slow it down.
That's all I can say :/

I have a wireless internet connection, from a netgear router, i have an "excellent" connection to the router. However, my internet pages load up really slowly and my downloads are extremely slow too :-(. I cant forward my ports to allow faster downloads as someone changed my router username & password but has now forgotten it :-(. What can i do to make my internet and downloads go fast?

These past few days I've been having terribly low download speeds ( <1KB/S ) yet my browsing speed, skype, online gaming is unaffected. At first I thought that there was a problem with my ISP, but my laptop downloads just fine. I ran a virus scan but it came clean.I don't have any downloads or torrents in the backgroun. When I try to run speedtest.com, the speed goes to normal, but then slowly declines and the test doesn't continue. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your time!

Hey I recently bought a new computer that is much better than my old one in stats but its not acting like it.

Windows XP
Service Pack 3
Intel Dual Core E5200
2.50GHz
2GB RAM

Now it was running ok to begin with but then the internet started having problems. It kept dropping out or fluctuating in speed and nothing seemed to fix it. It didnt happen on my old system it sat nicely at 54MB/s all the time.

Then the rest of the computer started going slow to start up so i got rid of some start up programs and desktop items which didnt seem to do much. And now ive noticed that when songs are playing in itunes they skip seconds every now and then.

Also when i click for programs to come up after i wait till everything is started up properly i have to wait a minute or two before they open. And burning DVDs has doubled in how long it takes.

Any ideas of what could be wrong, ive scanned for viruses using Avira and spyware using SUPERantispyware, ive cleaned registry using Registry easy and removed all unnecesary crap using CCleaner.

It got suggested that my computer was going slow because of AVG8 so i got rid of it and with got Avira but it slowed up again.

Hey, basically computer's been a bit slow and tried clearing some stuff and done other things, but still no luck, to make things worse internet's been a lot slow and when using either firefox and internet explorer. For example when going on youtube some videos would freeze in the middle and i would have to reload the page, and sometimes takes ages to load a page.

So here's my DDS log and hopefully the problem can be diagnosed, thank you.

This is my first time posting a question on bleeping computer. We are so thankful that you are out there to help us and not rip us off. I think my computer is infected. My desktop starts up very slowly, my internet connection is slow (it's slow in pulling up websites and some never come up). I'm getting lots of pop ups (even though pop up blocker is enabled). When I go to open the control panel, a flashlight pops up as if it is looking for it (it eventually does open but it takes a while). I had a problem at one time with a lot of POS.TMP files and followed advice from posts on this site to get rid of them. Well, my current problems started when a friend downloaded a music program. I believe it was called Soundman. When I noticed the computer acting funny, I went into the control panel and deleted it along with some other programs I found (PPC Booster, P2P Max, Ron Tool Adsoftinc, Wyzo, Eco Bar). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hello, my computer has been extremely slow on boot and my desktop has been hijacked with a message about changing it to a website. I also have a program called "error fix" showing up on my desktop and I have no idea where it came from. I've run Malware Bytes twice on the computer with numerous problems found. After running it the second time, I got a message saying I needed to run CHKDSK which I ran. Also, my internet is running very slowly and I just got a message that says "A program on your computer has corrupted your default setting for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has reset this sietting to your original search provider, Live.Search (search.live.com). Internet will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providors."

Here is my Hijackthis Log, if you need the MBAM logs, please let me know and I will post those as well.

Hi guys and gals,
i bought a new HP desktop just over a week ago and am mostly very happy with it, however, the download speeds when i am trying to get updates are sooo slow! and trying to stream a film from netflix is impossible to watch as it stops every 2minutes to adjust the connection speed. It has a built in wireless card and my wireless router is a Lynksys WRT160N, which i am getting an excellent signal from. I have used a NetMeter and it is telling me that my DL rate is no higher than 76.4 KiB/s and is generally a lot lower. I have updated all the drivers for the wireless adapters, tried moving the PC closer to the router, unplugged our cordless phone, but nothing has so far worked. Here is some basic information of my system

I recently bought a new comp w/ the vista as OS.

My vista computer seems to be so much slower honestly. Everytime I go to download something I get like 50kb/s or 80 at the most no matter what I do.

For the last 3 days actually I have been getting disconnects or super slowdowns in my internet speed that are even worse. I couldnt load google or anything. All that really would work was my Teamspeak. This seems to have ended however, for today that is.

My general internet was running super slow too until I disabled phishing in the tools.

I have already done the reg-edit that fully opens your tcp from half, as well as setting up my static ip and port forwarding the programs that I tend to use alot.I checked the event viewer and noticed this warning as well.\

"TCP/IP has chosen to restrict the scale factor due to a network condition."

I could swear that my internet on my xp laptop had seemed to be definitely faster; though I cant be sure. I saw alot of people in assorted forums saying that once they had removed the windows updates their internet was quite considerably faster, and I had considered doing it myself.

Right now from speedtests I have a 2.6 mb/s download and 59 ms when I ping a station thats 100km's from me(though It always feels way slower in any downloads I do) and I am just wondering what else I can do w/ vista to improve my internet speed.

I have dsl but it feels more like dialup honestly. I see my speed in comparison to oth... Read more

Answer:Ridiculous slow downloads on new computer

Download and burn a copy of Knoppix onto CD. Then boot from CD

Knoppix gives you a complete operating environment under Linux. Simply retest the speed connection using the SAME internet connection and the SAME computer hardware but a DIFFERENT operating system. This will at least isolate the problem to Vista or not.
btw... when Knoppix starts, just let it start with all default values at first (is usually sufficient to get it to boot successfully)

Post your results and we can take it from there...

Hello,

I have been having trouble with my desktop system running slow. My anti-virus (AVG free) stopped receiving updates. I tried to manually update but it would not work. I deleted AVG and tried to download Avira, however the system would not allow the download.

I also cannot recieve windows updates. I get a message that says that there was an error communicating with the server.

Also when I click on a search link very often I am taken to a different site (often ad based).

This problem has been ongoing for about a month now. Do I have a virus? AVG did not detect one prior to removal.

I have a loptop connected wirelessly to the same internet connection and it works perfectly. So I have ruled out a problem with my actual connection.

I have copied and pasted my highest useage system processes... I have many running... It seems to be to many to me.

iexplore.exe 66,584
csrss.exe 18,384
svchost.exe 13,460
explorer.exe 12,580
winlogon.exe 5,832

Everything else running is less than 5,000.

Any help would be apprecitated.

Answer:Slow Computer/ No Downloads or Updates

You very likely have spyware or viruses that AVG could not catch. Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking. Download CCleaner, delete temp files, run Registry cleaner. Download www.malwarebytes.org run full scan. Delete nasties. boot into normal mode and see if you can get to Microsoft Update.

Hi

ive been using limewire for agessss, now the download speeds are really slow all of a sudden its been like it for a week now? like 4-6kb/s i get 140kb/s in my browser downloads :S anyone know i have norton internet security running permit all on the firewall settings, i have done virus and spyware scans etc ??? :suspiciou

Answer:Limewire running slow and Internet explorer downloads are fast?

It could be something as simple as there was a setting in limewire changed to limit your speeds. Especially since you are seeing fast speeds elsewhere. It could also be that the other users have limited their speeds. You can also try reinstalling limewire if you think that might help.

Some kind of trojan invaded my computer I believe. I ran Symantec and it deleted a bunch of entries but the auto-protect kept popping up to block something labeled Downloader and file "kernel32.exe" I was eventually able to delete it in safe mode after turning off the system restore. But then the auto-protect kept blocking Adware.Webbuying with file name qmlqrib.dll (both of these were in system32 folder according to the log), but there was no file by that name anywhere. I ran Ad-Aware which removed two entries with a level 10 threat assessment named BookedSpace and Win32.TrojanClicker, however the Adware.Webbuying continued to be blocked by Symantec. I then ran Spybot which found and deleted numerous entries and I no longer get auto-protect for Adware.Webbuying. However, I continue to get pop-ups, internet is slower, computer is slower, and it seems to prevent downloads after a certain point in time (haven't made it past 20% of a file from various different sites ranging from 4-20 MB). Who knows what else it is doing; hopefully not downloading my personal data. Please lend me a hand if you can. Thanks. I have included my HijackThis log:

I have been having increasing problems with win ME over the last month or so. It's slow, it hangs periodically, and the most noticable change is that the hard drive is chugging away most of the time. I thought it was perhaps a memory issue after installing new versions of AIM, norton antivirus and eudora, and stopped running my bigger memory hogs at the same time but the problem persists. It's gone from just being slow peridocially to taking several minutes to find a web page or open a program. I've run adaware, spybot and have spywareblaster as well in addition to norton. I hope y'all can help! I rebooted with only scan registry and system tray running and this is my hijack this log-

Hello all
I've been having some issues for a couple of months now.
Delayed keystroke entries
Slow mouse response when clicking.
Jerky scrolling.
Both FF and IE8 browsers hang for a bit.
In FF, the little circle of dots that runs when loading a page, quits, starts, quits, etc. IE8 does the same.
Disabled 4-5 FF add ons and nothing changed.
Hit enter to move a line down, and it hesitates. Backspace hesitates.
Have cleaned up the main drive disc, defragged, cleared cookies and cache, all to no avail.
Have replaced the keyboard and mouse.

VBulletin forums work fair.
Any PHP forums, I cannot stay logged in on those for very long. KIcks me off.

WildBlue satellite with a netgear router to run another household computer.
Windows XP Pro, all updates.
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual
Core Processor 5800+

It's took me 2 minutes to type this.

Answer:Web browsers, slow typing, stalling,etc

You have two antivirus, Avast and Kaspersky. Never run more than one at the time or they will conflict and slow down your computer. You should uninstall one.

I regulary visit a few news websites that are always slow to load...and at times stalling, even though I have high-speed FiOS service. These websites are notorious for outsourcing their heavy page advertising (ad-servers), and their designers using too many CCS images and JavaScript...all of which are responsible for slowing website downloads.

I ran into a cool (free) webpage analyzer that confirmed my belief in why some of the websites were always slow to load. I thought I'd share.
Here's the website link that analyzes and diagnoses websites: WebSiteOptimization.com

For example, type or copy/paste this website: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ and have it analyzed. The MSNBC homepage has always been one of the most overloaded with far too many ads (from outside sources, e.g. doubleclick), images, scripts, etc.

So, if you frequent some websites that you feel are too slow to load and wonder why - check 'em out. You may find that the website's web designers are pushing things too far...and the reason it's slow to load has nothing to do with your Internet service or your PC.

Answer:Slow or stalling website loading?

That's an excellent link, I've used it before and helps with ideas to keep my site more trimmed down.

I am having challenges with Thunderbird email client - lately, it has gotten slow and sometimes stalls. First of all, we are a small company with 8 users on a mail server - Novell linked.

I have cleaned out my Saved files and moved them to my local folders thinking this might help, but it has not.

Any ideas? thanks!

Answer:Thunderbird running slow-stalling out

Can you list some details please:

Which version of Thunderbird are you using?
How many and which addons/themes do you have installed?
Have you compacted each folder?
Have you emptied the inbox folder emails to another folder?

When you say "slow", how slow are we talking here and when exactly?

Recently I have had some problems when playing videos on the VLC player; especially ones that were taken by my Panasonic Lumix camera...but also movies. Is there a way to check for speeding up my Edge 13 or processor ?

Answer:slow and stalling video on VLC player

Some things you could do right away are :  Do a disc defrag.  Do a disc cleanup.  Get rid of temp files, histories.

Some AV programs run whenever you click on something. See if your AV might be slowing things down.  What AV are you running, anyway?

Hey Everyone,

First off I'm pretty new here I know..........

My problem is that my internet connection is pretty slow on my main computer. It's an older (6 years) Dell. I'm still running XP and IE7. I have Comcast cable and it's connected through a Linksys modem. The problem is that the internet response on this machine is pretty slow. I have a laptop that I use and that is much better. I would figure that my "main" computer would be faster since it has a hard connection, not wireless.

I know that isn't much info so ask away and I do what I can to provide all the info needed.

Thanks!!!!!!

Ok I recently noticed that my computer is taking longer to load and also it lags when running programs. In addition, I noticed that my internet was slow. I use Yahoo DSL.

I defraged my hard drive with Auslogics Disk Defrag and it did not speed anything up. I did a adaware and spybot scan. And it did not help. So I decided to come here.

Following the steps, I ran an activescan and it found only 1 trojan that could explain my slow internet problem (hxxp://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/security-info/about-malware/encyclopedia/overview.aspx?idvirus=143883]). It was removed. I always had IE-SQUAD and Spyware blaster enabled and up to date. And I did my windows update. I am running Win XP SP2, not SP3, since there were a few things my computer cannot do that I need on SP3.

But my computer is still running slow and "locks up" briefly. If anyone can help, I would be very thankful. Thank you!

Below is my Hijack log and attached is my activescan log:

I'm running Windows XP with an AMD Sempron 2.0 ghz Processor with 700MB Ram.

Firefox takes up all this computer power(I know that this is more common with the updated Firefox's but in my case it's still to an extreme). Firefox will stay open after I close it and I will have to use Windows Task Manager to fully close. I've switched to Google Chrome and it is quicker.

Any Java usage slows the computer down incredibly. Even in Chrome it's slow. I can't switch between programs nearly as smoothly as before. Basically everything takes forever now and my computer seems to strain under the workload of what use to be basic usage.

I found two Trojans with Kaspersky Trial scan and I thought that fixed the problem(I eventually got rid of Kaspersky because it was making my slow computer even slower.) Unfortunately I never wrote down their names because my parent dropped me on my head frequently when I was a child.

I've run all the scans and nothing has come up(to my basic and infantile computer knowledge). One problem with the scans was the MGtools would open briefly and the window would only just flash and then dissapear and nothing would run. I blame mostly Jesus for this but Buddha in his infinite wisdom and humbleness has also taken some of the blame.

If you people could help me out that would be great.

Things like weather radar, and my Excite email, load slowly
and often "time out" too soon on Firefox - is there a way to
extend the time it allows something to download and open?

Getting quite annoying.

Thanks

sorry, if this not the right place please move. I did many google searches cant seem to find the issue Im having, or maybe lack of the right key searches. You guys are my last hope.
I will try to explain my problem as clearly as I can. And so sorry about my bad grammar and spelling, trying to post this asap.

first off give small history of my PC. I bought my PC new Sept 2001. A HP Pavilion with 1.3 ghz, 256ram, and a 55gig hard-drive originally came with WinMe, since then I upgraded to XP. I kept my PC case clean, didn't try to install programs my PC couldn't handle, didn't go to any sites that knew were bad with viruses and such also had Malwareytes/spybot/avast/hijackthis to use, didnt install any toolbars, and tried not to have many programs open at the same time. I basically kept my PC simple with use.

Anyways around June I noticed some odd slowdowns
While playing Winamp and running a torrent with speeds of more than 400+ the audio would become choppy. This also happen when I would open FF, IE or any program while running Winamp, the audio would be choppy.

Extracting 700mb files from Winrar would take around 8mins

Playing Youtube, WMP, of VLC videos would be slow and choppy.

Transferring files from one PC to another over a crossover cable would take much longer. 4gigs of files would take about 20mins or so.

Virus scanners, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot would also take much longer than usual.

So, about 2 weeks ago while my brother was on Youtube my... Read more

Question: Stalling downloads

Today I logged onto youtube too watch some vids, every single video I watched would only buffer about 45 seconds -1 minute of the vid then no more. Then I tried downloading a patch for a game, the file was about 97mb and when I downloaded the download would start off very fast, about 650kb/s and it would go well. Then around 10% into the download everything just stopped. The download would make no progress even though in the download window it said it was still downloading at 650 kb/s. I read in some other threads on different sites that AVG 8.00 was the problem so I uninstalled it, turned off my firewall and downloads still stall, youtube still wont work. It has only started doing this today. please help!!!!!!

Answer:Stalling downloads

Hi -

1st check out the Reliability Monitor to see what updates came in or new programs were installed -
START | type perfmon /rel

Then perform a system restore using a restore point from 24-48 hours ago - before the trouble began.
START | type rstrui

Question: Downloads stalling

When I try to download certain software from the websites (or from CD ROMs) my computer stalls. This has occured with outlook express 6, DirectX9, and certain windows updates. For instance I tried to download a recent windows update which was only 125 KB. The download occured in a couple of seconds but the install took 1 hour 45 minutes. During the install process all controls (mouse, etc) on the computer were responding very slowly. Any bigger files just stop completely - usually after the install has been completed but during "copying".I have disabled my Norton Virus checker.I am running Windows ME and have 250 MB of RAM.Any thoughts?

Question: Stalling downloads

Hi,I'm trying to download Windows Media Player 11 but when I get to around 5% the download seems to freeze. The paper symbol moves from the world to the file, the transfer speed is showing between 40 and 120 KB/Sec but the time remaining and the % figure doesn't change. This happens when I try to download almost anything and is very annoying. I have tried on my laptop as well as my desktop and they are both the same. I suppose it is something to do with the modem but I don't know. Any advise would be received gratefully. I have asked this before but got no answers.Mike

Answer:Stalling downloads

try getting it from click hereMaybe the Microsoft servers are to blame.

Hello

So I've been having this problem for over a month now. For many files that I try to download, they either don't start downloading or they stall at 99%

Torrent downloads work fine, even random files also download properly. When I try to download a large file either normally or using a download manager, it would download for like 800-900 mb and stop just when it has about a few kbs or about a couple of Mbs left to go.

I have tried downloading in Safe Mode with Networking and even on different computers, but they all have the same problem.

What could be going wrong here?

Please advise

Thanks
