Help! Computer crashes every time I scan and unable to open programs

Question: Help! Computer crashes every time I scan and unable to open programs

Hi,
Please help, my computer is crashing everytime I attempt a scan to check for virus' which i'm positive I have. also everytime I try and open a program I get:

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an association in the folder options control panel"
and I have absolutely no idea what this means! I have found a way around opening the programs though by going into run finding the program there but then still having to 'choose the program from the list to open with' which is just the original program (if that makes sense its a right old palava!).

I've got windows xp operating system and I've tried using pcguard (virgin media) but it crashes as soon as it starts scanning the c: drive. i've also tried using ewido to scan but it does the same thing. the computer also randomly crashes. The hijack this log is:

Preferred Solution: Help! Computer crashes every time I scan and unable to open programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a friend's computer. He says (and I can confirm) that is is slow and unresponsive to a nearly debilitating degree. It is a Sony VAIO running Windows Vista 32-Bit.

An Avast scan turned up one infected file, C:/Windows/MEMORY.DMP that was "successfully deleted," but Avast also says that there is/was a virus running in the memory, and that a boot-time scan was necessary. After multiple attempts, the computer just skips any boot-time scan and goes straight to boot-up.

I do not have access to a windows boot disk/install cd. If absolutely necessary I may be able to procure a burned .iso, but not an official one.

Thank you for your time.

That is really all I can tell you. Every time I open a picture file, I get the BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) and it is very annoying. I don't really know what could be causing it.

Answer:Solved: Every time I try to open a picture (jpeg, bmp, gif...) my computer crashes

Do you know what program your computer is using to open the Pictures? The windows default is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Right-click one of the pics and choose properties, then click Opens with. If it's set to something different, try setting it to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. If it's already set there, then try chaning it to IE. Click click ok. Try to open the pic again (you will have to do this on a pic of each file type).

Hello,
It seems that my computer has become very slow and starting yesterday it is unable to open some programs after the computer is on for the first few minutes. I followed your suggestions and ran the HJT-5 sequence and below is the main.txt from Deckard's Scanner. I also attach extra.txt. Please let me know if you need any further information so that you can help me fix the virus/spyware in my computer. For your reference I also attach another file (Activescan.txt) that was the result of Online ActiveScan.

Thanks and Regards,
Kurang Mehta

Answer:Computer very slow and some programs unable to open

Please download Combofix from HERE

Save ComboFix to the desktop.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

I tried to run Malwarebytes anti-malware program after going through the forum. The program is unable to open. Similar is the case with microsoft security essentials, it closes every time I start the scan. Apart from this my laptop is very slow and too many pop-ups and redirection takes place on my chrome.

im having the same problem and done all that and when i went and looked over the motherboard i found 3 capacitor were like corroded or like kinda blew up. can i just clean that off or is the motherboard trashed?

Edit by Done_Fishin

this post has been removed from here and a new thread started.
please do not start new posts in old threads regarding similar problems. whilst problems seem similar , solutions are frequently different and require personal attention rather than confusing and possibly conflicting remedies. It's far better to open up a new thread so we can concentrate on you & your problems..
Thx

Answer:Nearly all my programs crashes all the time

The motherboard is repairable if you can find a good technician willing to spend a few hours removing and replacing the capacitors with good quality, high temperature (105 degrees), LOW ESR replacements. the board will need to be cleaned up around where the residue is and it would be best to replace ALL the capacitors on the board that are of the same type. Usually these are all in a row by the CPU.
There is a site that will either repair or sell capacitors for the repair. Can't remember the name of it though .. something like computer repair or motherboard repair. It's in the states and has lots of photos of swollen capacitors including the history of how the swollen capacitor saga began.,

I found the site at www.motherboardrepair.com but it appears to be down .. it just brings up a message "GONE"

I have had this computer for some years now, but recently it has become unbearable, and I don't know why. Almost all my programs crashes all the time. You know, that message "this program executed an illegal operation and has to be closed"? Yep, that one.

And I don't mean some of the programs I have, but every single one of them. Internet Explorer, Firefox, IrFanView, Windows Media Player, Adobe Reader, Word... sometimes even the Explorer it self will crash for no apparent reason.

And I have formatted the computer many, many times already, trying to get rid of this. Even the internet seems to be slower and worse lately. I don't think the problem is the Windows XP CD I have, because I have formatted my brother's computer with the same CD and he doesn't have any of the problems I'm experiencing.

My computer is an AMD 2GHz with 512MB RAM, running on Windows XP Professional 2002 with Service Pack 2.

Really, I'm almost giving up on this... what could be causing all those programs to crash all the time? That's just freaky and ungodly annoying.

After running Rkill and scanning with Malwarbytes (found and removed 5 issues), MS Office programs will not open from desktop icons. Kaspersky also will not open but, when clicked, a box appears asking with which program it should opened. On some other machines I have been able to System Restore, but this machine will not restore. Have also used http://www.dougknox..../file_assoc.htm to get programs to work but it did not work here. Dell Latitude D531 is the computer in question.

Please read every bit of this, as I try to be as detailed as possible. This started about three days ago.First, the fake programs:Windows Antivirus ProAdvanced Virus RemoverSome red X in the system tray that displays "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you." (Don't know if this is part of one of the above fake anti-spyware programs or its own).I've had one or two of them before. (Gotta love the obvious misspellings and grammatical errors).Secondly, the Task Manager is disabled. So I go ahead and try some virus programs. None of them can get a few seconds into the scan without terminating such as MBAM and SpyNoMore (from what SpyNoMore showed while scanning, I saw the file that disabled the task manager and "Advanced Virus Remover", so if I could somehow get that to do a complete scan, I'm pretty sure it could work.)I came across a program that did, however, do a complete scan. It was called A-Squared. When I began to quarantine the files, though, the window where it says there has been a fatal error and Windows must terminate with the countdown from 1:00 occurs. After that, If I boot up my computer again, explorer.exe is gone AND the task manager is disabled. So I had to boot it up in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me. Yesterday, I got a program running on my computer that kept telling me that I was severely infected, had a keylogger/trojan/worm/virus, yadda yadda and the icon running looked exactly like the Windows Security Centre one. I tried accessing the internet, but it kept blocking my access with warnings not to proceed or horrible damage would be done to my computer. It blocked my access to Malwarebytes. It wouldn't allow me to update my virus scanner. Finally I was able to run MBam, but once I rebooted, none of my programs will open properly: I get an "Open with" box. I can open some programs but only by clicking 'open with' and then navigating to the application file in Program Files. I can also open some programs by right clicking "Run as..." and then choosing current user.

Here are some other issues:

I also cannot update my virus scanner it says:
"Virus and spyware definintions update failed due to an internet or network connectivity issue. Error 0X80070424". This happens also with any other security programs I have installed.

My Win XP firewall is turned off and trying to turn it back on through Windows Security Centre I get the following error msg:
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found".

I've tried Rkill, but cannot get it to run at all. I've tried the Sysinternals Process Explorer and can get it to run using the run as function, but ha... Read more

hi, I installed avast free antivirus on a mini hewlett parkard laptop and after a boot-time scan i cant access any application or the internet it keeps on displaying an application error message that reads... The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application. Please help me out.

Answer:Programs wont open after boot scan

You most likely had a system file that was infected and Avast quarantined it. I would look at doing a system restore. Depending on the model of HP laptop you have, it will either have recovery discs or a recovery partition. Your manual should tell you how.message edited by THX 1138

Answer:Firefox crashes every time I open it

One thing you could try is fully removing FireFox from your system. I avoid editing the registry but sometimes you have to. You may have to go in and manually remove each entry for FireFox.

Use a program like Revo Uninstaller, you can get a trial version, Load Revo, then use it to uninstall FireFox, do the advance removal, and it will go through and remove any residual registry codes that FireFox left.

Then reboot, should be able to run your installation of fire fox again and see if it loads.

Hope this gets you back up and running, but let us know.

My laptop was running quite slow with opening certain programs and also many programs would become unresponsive if I tried to do too many things at once (Firefox and iTunes especially), and so I successfully ran registry and adware cleaners, and tried to run Malwarebytes (and alternatives), but found that I couldn't run a full scan without it becoming completely unresponsive and effectively crashing my computer. In the end I decided to just restore my laptop to factory settings hoping that that would be an easy way to get rid of whatever the problem was, but I'm still having the same issues with unresponsive programs and I can't even run a full antivirus scan without it getting stuck somewhere around 8% and I even tried to run Malwarebytes again but it couldn't go more than a couple of seconds before crashing. A massive amount of windows updates were installed, which took about 90 minutes to complete, but then it got stuck twice on the 'configuring windows' screen and I had to restart it to get it going again (after waiting about an hour each time) but the problems started before those updates, and are still going. I haven't really done much to screw it up since the factory restore - uninstalled some preloaded rubbish and installed Malwarebytes (then uninstalled it) OpenOffice, Firefox, iTunes and VLC player, and transferred some personal files back onto it.

It isn't completely unusable at all, it's just that I'm having to c... Read more

I play a game called minecraft, and it runs on Java. I have checked I am running the latest Java, and I have checked I only have one version of it installed. I have re-installed it many times, but so far no luck. As I use Windows 8, I have made sure I run java in desktop mode which is what it says on the Java website.

Browser - Chrome
OS - Windows 8
Graphics Card - Intel Core (4000 I think)
Processor - Intel core I5 3.2 ghz (about)
Java version (latest) - Version 7 update 25

Thanks for your help!!!

Cannot turn on real time scanning (due to safe mode??)
Found early on adware:win32/offerboxbrowser and also IE page opening to adserving.com
Do not know how to find removal or threat history as friends PC, do not know what it is I am trying to fix.
Major issue, only have iPad and the one computer to work with. No method of downloading extra tools.

Could ping external sites though
Windows Def shows bservice.exe, fst_es_100.exe, n/a.exe (three of them) and we'd.exe as start up items
N/a are: ndstray.exe, googleeulalauncher.exe and appintegrator.exe

Windows XpPro SP3. 2.6ghz processor. 2.5gb ram.

This program, rundll32.exe is now running at startup, and not allowing Firefox to run ( when I open Mozilla, it brings up the 'Firefox Crashed' dialog exery time, regardless) . No other negative effects that I'm aware of while it's running. If I end the process using Task Manager, Mozilla cranks up fine. In safe mode, the process does not run at startup, and Mozilla runs fine.

Problems started approx. 2 week ago, using Firefox doing some general surfing, no high-risk stuff that I know of - trusted sites - gmail, Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas shopping sites, etc, a few online forums for information, but nothing I haven't visited before - and it just crashed on me. Wouldn't come backup either. Had my little brother look at it a few days later ( he is more computer savvy ) and he somehow identified the 'rundll32.exe' process as the problem. He tells me it is a good filename, but that it shouldn't come up at startup and stay there, so it's something funky going on, but that was the end of his know-how about it.

I have run MBAM and Spybot under normal conditions. No luck.

It's not like this is an A1 Emergency right-this-minute type thing, but if it is Trojan/Spy/Malware type stuff, I reckon it's better to fix it instead of lettin it run every startup and just ending it. I'm open to whatever is necessary. Thanks a bunch.

Answer:rundll32.exe runs all the time, Firefox crashes on open

Hello. Just got my new w701ds in the mail today, and everytime I open the second monitor (or boot with it open), I get the blue screen of death and it crashes. Of course, it can't be more disapointed then to buy a product for a specific feature, and then that feature does not work. Is this known? Is it a dud? Any ideas before I send it back?

Solved!

Answer:Brand new w701ds crashes each time open second monitor

1. Try to update all the hardware drivers and BIOS. For GPU and others, use drivers on Lenovo website to isolate the problems and check whether any 3rd party or oem driver causes this. 2. If it doesn't work, you can call Lenovo Service Center and report a case and they will resolve the problems for you. If still unsatisfied after repair or something, you can consider to get a full refund according to Lenovo. (Within 30 days after purchase) I am not too sure how well is the service of Lenovo Customer Service at your region. Hopefully they can provide you an satisfactory services and fix your w701ds. AFAIK, W701ds is an flagship and awesome machine and Lenovo being the only one making a dual-screen mobile workstations, I don't think there will be other manufacturers making dual-screen mobile workstations.Best RegardsPeter

Greetings,

My McAfee Real-Time Scan will not remain enabled. When I try to run either Quick Scan or Full Scan, an error message comes up, telling me to return to the McAfee Internet Security Home and to try to run the scan again.

I have followed their instructions for re-enabling the Real-Time Scan to the best of my abilities, by trying to restart the McShield Service, and by running the oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility that they instructed me to download. The oas-disabled-fix.cmd utility will not run.

I have contacted McAfee and they have told me that it is a problem with Windows Update. I have contacted Microsoft and told them that as well, but they seem to be trying to rule out any other possible cause, than what McAfee says is the actual cause of the problem, thereby dragging this out even longer.

Microsoft is supposed to be getting back to me again tomorrow, but any other help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

I'm having a problem. A very frustrating one. Almost all of my programs take an incredibly long time to open. Startups are very slow too.

It all started less than a week ago. Pretty suddenly I've just noticed programs take simply too long to open, although I can do everything else along with it, without anything being interrupted. Metaphorically, it's like I've lit a fuse to open one program and then returned to my desk to continue with the rest of the work. The delay can sometimes be larger than 5 minutes. And, when opening programs, my hard disk almost always buzzes, but there's no unusual sounds like scratching; it sounds like there's a scan in progress or something*. Here's what I have done:

- Updated NOD32 and ran a scan, found nothing.
- Ad-Aware ran a scan too, found nothing
- Spybot Search & Destroy found some minor threats - "Microsoft.Windows.App.FirewallBypass" was the most 'serious' one of them
- Scanned my registry with Registry Mechanic and TuneUp Registry Cleaner
- Ran disk cleanup and CCleaner
- Defragmented (there's something quite interesting: Windows Defragmenter continuously recommends defragmentation after running the analysis, even when the defragmentation had been completed.)
- Ran a disk check of the C: drive and everything seemed alright (didn't touch D: though)
- Adjusted startup programs

PC specs:

Windows XP, Service Pack 2
Intel Pentium D 3.0 GHz
2 GB of RAM

Answer:Programs take a very long time to open

Sounds like a failing hard drive. Check the Event Viewer (Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer) and see what errors Windows is logging.

If you know the brand of your HDD's, you can download the diagnostic tools from the manufacturers website for testing the drives.

You should also free up some space on your C: drive. By default, Windows is likely trying to use more space than that for your swap file (page file).

**EDIT: during bootup ensure all of your RAM is being recognized.

Hello all,

I recently got a new digital camera, and now anytime I go to open the folders containing the pictures I take with it I get a data execution prevention, then the "Windows has encountered an error and needs to close" message, locking everything up and restarting explorer. The camera is a Casio Exilim EX-S5. All of the pictures in my other folders (taken with a different digital camera) still open fine, and I can view the problem files with Picasa3 without any trouble.

Here is a copy of the most recent error signature I received:

EventType : BEX P1 : explorer.exe P2 : 6.0.2900.5512 P3 : 48025c30
P4 : unknown P5 : 0.0.0.0 P6 : 00000000 P7 : 00000000
P8 : c0000005 P9 : 00000008

The crashes are also periodically accompanied by a DrWatson Postmortem Debugger error.

This is driving me crazy, and I don't want to take any more pics with this camera if it just continues to do this. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me.

Answer:Windows crashes every time I open up specific picture folders

not sure how to fix it. I'm sure someone will post a fix.

But, you can go indirect. Your camera probably uses an SD card to save your pics, so forget the camera, just plug the SD in, if you have no SD slot you can buy SDHC USB readers for around ?3 from amazon or play. Your software will recognise the files and prompt you the same as though your camera was plugged in.

Windows explorer, (NOT internet explorer) crashes every time I close the last open window (on the desktop). I usually run XP up to date (SP3) with antivirus (Windows defender AND AVG), firewall (Online armor WITH program access control), spybot (withtout teatime), ad-aware, spywareblaster.
I followed the instructions in the lengthy procedure faithfully, and gratefully removed a couple of trojans lying somewhere in my system.
I end up with a couple of files less and a couple of programs (bitdefender, asquare, superantispyware, malwarebytes, combofix, mgtools) more, but still the system crashes when I close an open window in the desktop unless there's another window open.
I have even rerun a few of the cleaners, nothing else found.
I have tried everything....
Attached below are the three text files. MGtools zip file follows.
Thanks in advance

Hello all...this is my first post to this forum, so if I seem like a n00b, it's because I am. My computer had/s a virus. I ran a scan using McAfee 8.0i Corporate Edition, and was able to delete one: Exploit-MhtRedir.gen However, the scan did not complete. At a certain point in the scan, the computer shuts off. This would lead me to believe I have ANOTHER virus, or that the virus that was supposedly deleted, wasn't. I have run HijackThis! just to make sure I am covering all the bases. Hello everyone.

I'm having a couple of problems with my computer. Everytime I run any kind of registry cleaner (RegCure, Registry Machine, and others) my computer always crashes during the middle of the scan. To see which part of the scanning was causing the crash I would only scan certain items and see which ones caused problems. After doing this, I found that my computer crashes when it scans COM/ActiveX Entries, File/Path References, and Empty Registry Keys.

I also have some problems when I start up my computer. I get this message at the welcome screen and my volume control does not automatically start up in the taskbar anymore like it used to. Instead, I have to go open it through the control panel and then place it in the taskbar. I'm not these problems are directly linked with the registry scanning crashes but they all started a few days ago.

Any way I could fix these?

- Jia

Answer:Computer crashes during registry scan

Hi there and welcome to TSF.
It's unlike to be the scan itself that's causing the problem. You may have some damaged system files. The first thing to try is running sfc /scannow. Make sure your installation disc has SP2 on it. If you need any help with this please ask.

Hey,

So basically my laptop is crashing whenever I run a virus scan, it crashes near the end of the scan every time, after running with AVG free and Avast!, this isn't the only time it crashes, sometimes its completely random, whether I'm doing something on it or not, I can just come back to it and it'll be frozen, the only way to do anything is to soft reset it.

Randomly when I start it up (not necessarily after a crash) it performs checkdisk, not every time but once in a while. the crashing has become more frequent in the past few weeks.

There is no error message when it crashes, the whole thing just freezes, AVG detected three viruses and moved them to quarantine, even though the computer crashed, those are:

Trojan Horse SHeur3.RYF
Trojan horse Generic2_c.XRV
Trojan horse Generic2_c.XRW

There are probably more but the virus scan never finishes.

Additionaly I have registry mechanic, whenever I run it it detects and fixes almost the same things every time.

I'm running out of ideas, thanks for reading and I hope someone can help.

Hi,
I have Windows Vista. I have not had antivirus software for approx. 3 months. I recently downloaded Malwarebytes. I can do a quick scan with no problems and no virus showing. I can do a full scan on all drives except for the C drive. When I attempt to do a full scan on the C drive the computer constantly freezes. Everytime. Each scan will last 17 or 18 minutes and will always stop at: C\Windows\System32\IME\imekr8\applets\imkrskf.dll
Does anybody know what this is??
Please help!!

first off, I am so sorry if this is in the wrong place. anyway, I just had a problem not long ago with having antispyware vista 2010 through a torrent download (first time I've used p2p programs in 4 years, seriously) I instantly uninstalled uTorrent, and the popups disappeared. then I ran a full virus scan using McAfee Security Scan, and it picked up 2 Trojans and quarantined them. I though I was alright, but I can't open programs, kind of. if I want to open photoshop for example, this pops up:

so I'll browse and find the program.

and I have to do that every time I want to open a program. I'm trying to open McAfee but I can't find the file to open it. there are so many and none of them work. if someone can help me that would be so greatly appreciated right now.

Answer:unable to open programs

Hello -

Seems you've encountered first hand why we advise against the use of P2P applications, torrents and cracks.

I am using Windows 7. A few nights ago, I was turning off the laptop and saw that Microsoft was installing 26 updates. The next time I turned the laptop on, it had on the screen in was updating and had some odd numbers I have never seen before with Microsoft, but it completed and I was able to use the laptop for the next 5 hours and then shut it down. Today, I turned on laptop and it booted into windows fine, but I was unable to open any programs, start button would not work, etc.
Booting into Safe Mode did the same thing to me, after about 4 or 5 times, I was able to move around normally in Safe Mode and run the scans and tools. Rebooted into normal mode and seemed to have "fixed" the problem. I noticed then that my wireless icon was missing, although I did have internet access. Rebooted and am back to same thing again, not responding in Normal Mode, and took about 4 boots to be able to function on Safe Mode. Here are my logs:

Answer:Unable to open any programs

Welcome to Major Geeks!

It does not really look like you are having malware problems based on your logs.

I suggest that you try uninstalling AVG and then reboot your PC immediately.

After reboot, run the below. Some of the instructions for the Windows Repair tool may be a little out of date and you may not find certain options. Just ignore thus and run what you do find.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.

Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
Now select the Start Repairs tab.
The click the Start button.
Create a System Restore point if prompted.
On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
Now select the following repair options:
Reset Registry Permissions
Reset File Permissions
Register System Files
Repair WMI
Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
Repair Proxy Settings
Repair Windows Updates
Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
Shutdown any other prog... Read more

Hi,

I am having a really annoying problem with my PC at the moment. I cannot seem to open any programs which connect with the internet (iTunes, Poker Agents etc) except firefox and IE.

Kind of annoying since I bought a new iPod yesterday and I can't get it up and running!

If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can start to address this problem, as I haven't a clue where to start, I would be gratefull.

Thanks.

Hey there,

just this morning I haven't been able to run or open programs unless I right click and run as administrator.  After doing a brief search around the web, it looks like this might be some sort of virus.  I've tried to download malware bytes and one other antivirus program and neither files will even begin to install.  For malware bytes, I get an "error creating window class" popup when I try to run the setup.  My computer also will not let me go to organize > search and folder options > view > unhide extensions.  In fact, it won't let me click the organize button at all.  Nothing happens when I try to click it.  Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Unable to run/open programs

Update: I was finally able to find a way to show the extensions for programs.  In conclusion, I was able to change the extension and name for mbam.exe and am now running a scan.

I've never really seen anything like this, I can't open any programs except Mozilla.

Scanned the comp last night (AVG, Avast, etc) and it came up with one Trojan Virus...today I turned on the comp and I can't open any programs.
Everything gives me the error message "Windows cannot find C:/Program Files/..." Also I tried to download new virus scanners, since I can't open AVG I figured I might be able to scan and get the virus with a new one, but it gives me an error message about having to open something else, and that it may be a malicious program.

I've been looking everywhere for anyone with my same problem, after a few hours I decided to check here.

But now, when we are unable to open programs. When trying to open itunes or microsoft office, the message applicaiton not found is displayed.
If I go into Control Panel, select Add/Remove programs, the message c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe "Application not found"
Also, on the taskbar, in the lower right-hand side, the Windows Security Alert symbol is displayed.
Today, I ran Stinger and and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and no infections were found.

I was unable to launch the Defogger.exe file under Normal boot mode. I get a screen that states 'Open with' and a list of appplications to choose.

All the files attached were run under Safe Mode.

Problem started earlier tonight. I clicked accept or okay on something that I think was a Windows Update (Honestly, at this point, I'm unsure of what it is I really clicked. I know that's stupid of me to click accept or ok on something I wasn't paying attention to, but it's too late now.) and my computer completely restarted. When it came back up, I attempted to get back on Skype, Windows Live Messenger, and Mozilla Firefox. None of them would open. I clicked on the icons as well as the links in my start menu. Although, on the start menus, it showed as if I was still signed into those programs. My mouse pointer on the screen gave me a little circle as if it were loading, but nothing happened. Suddenly, I got a blue screen with something that said "Crash" and "Dump" in it. I panicked. When it finally restarted my computer again, I still cannot access any programs, including my anti virus. I can get into Pain, My Documents, and such, but nothing else really.

I tried restoring to three days before, but the problem followed me. It didn't help at all.
I also tried Safe Mode, nothing would work there either.

I am using a separate computer to access this website.

I am using Windows 7

Please help?!?

So I am getting this error whenever i try to open up any executable : Cannot find file <file path> (or one of its components).
Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

I am guessing it is a virus. At the beginning I was unable to open anything, but i got around it by opening files that are associated with a program. for example a .doc file would allow me to open word, but when i try opening the winword.exe file i would get that error.

Anyone seen this before? This just started happening.

I?m unable to run almost all of the programs on my laptop. I get the following error message:

?This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel?

I can open some programs, such as WORD or Publisher if I click on a saved document. But these programs do not open if I click on the taskbar, desktop icon, or program startup icon.

I cannot open or run System Restore, even in safe mode. It will start in safe mode, but once it gets to the point in the process where it reboots the computer I get a message that the computer is unable to open rstu.exe (or whatever the system restore file is called).

I?m running XP. Here?s what I?ve tried so far:

? Virus scan: clean
? Ad-Aware Pro SE scan: clean
? Re-set folder associations to default in Control Panel Folder Options
? Reinstall MS Office
? MS Knowledge base

I?m out of ideas. Any suggestions on what to do besides wipe out the hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Windows XP and start from scratch?

I just received a new laptop about 2-3 weeks ago, and things have been working great up until yesterday. Usually I am at my mother's house, but I was staying at my dad's for the weekend so I took the computer with me. When I turned it on, I noticed that my facial recognition program hadn't started (the place where it usually is was blank). I didn't think much of it until the computer finished loading everything; I tried to open Google Chrome and it wasn't opening. I tried to open all my desktop icons and that didn't work either. The computer did not give me any error messages. The programs were not in the task manager, not even in the processes list. At first I tried running the system file checker, and it was not able to fix anything. After that, I booted in safe mode and tried to open them and it worked. I logged off and restarted in normal mode and everything was fine. But today, I restarted and I wasn't able to open anything again. So I tried what I did yesterday and it worked. So basically I have to boot in safe mode then in normal mode for anything to work.

Sorry for the long explanation. System specs in next post.

Well, this was a recent problem, and I apologize if this is a common or easy problem. Trying google didn't help too much.

After trying to play a game which required a disc (lotr 2 battle for middle earth),I had gotten multiple disk errors that showed up at once. Since then

- all of the desktop icons won't launch the programs.
- pop up notice saying disk is full (though checking the hd shows 10gb still available)
- unable to switch users or log on to any other account ( only the account i used to play the game is useable)
- unable to install or uninstall anything won't work
- no viruses or spyware detected
- check disk shows nothing
- no internet connection (including wireless utility and direct connection)
- system restore does not help

Trying to open a program or switch users makes the screen flash once and return to the desktop.

The laptop is running windows xp sp2, and is a Hp pavillion dv5115nr notebook

I think it might be a hard drive error but I may be wrong

Any help would be appreciated

Hmm, I just checked again. And it seems that I can log in to the other accounts, but they all share the same problem. Any program that I try to open shows up and immediately closes.

This is my second thread and I have to say that, so far, I'm really impressed with the response times and expertise here. It is very much appreciated and I will be donating when I can.

This second computer that I'm working on is Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit with SP2.

So far, I have not been able to open any flash drives plugged in.
I can open Control Panel but anything I try to open in there brings up a pop-up box that says (title bar: Explorer.EXE) (The specified service does not exist as an installed service.)
Can't open IE
Start menu looks minimalist
Overall, the computer is really slow

I have not attempted anything except Malwarebytes in Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Unable to open programs

I also just tried uninstalling some obvious things like the toolbars. I can open Programs & Features but when I click uninstall, after highlighting one of the unwanted programs, nothing happens.

Hi all,

So my computer is almost unuseable right now.

When I start my computer, afterputting in my password, it logs on slowly. Folders do not open and nothing open on the run prompt. Computer just freezes.

However other program open, included Google chrome, malwarebytes, etc. Ccleaner doeas have an error, it restarts but then works normally.

I was thinking windows could be corrupted. I wanted to do a repair install, but since explorer.exe doesnt function, the autoplay feature never loads either. I have a bootable USB drive with windows 7. I dont know how to get to the set up file without opening a folder.

I was reading that the repair can't be done on safemode.

I also wanted to rule out user profile corruption. I got a profile thing briefly on there but that went away. I did this. How to fix a corrupt user profile in Windows - How-To - PC Advisor With the intention of opening another account but i got error 0xc0000006.

I tried running sfc \scannow in safemode but that caused the explorer.exe restart and it never opens. When I restarted my computer, i did safe mode with command prompt. That got it to run but its been stuck at 19% for a long time now. It then failed, said could not perform the requested operation. I tried verify only and that has gotten past 19% I turned off the WiFi when it first started acting up and don't have the computer connected to wiresethernet at the moment. Okay, I have posted on this topic twice already on bleepingcomputer and have yet to figure out the cause of it (once in the "am I infected?" and another in the 'virus, malware, trojan, spyware log' sections).  Links to them both for reference of what is going on will be below, but here is a synopsis of the problem:

About a couple weeks ago, I returned home to a laptop that just became laggy/unresponsive when trying to open files or programs on Windows 7.  I mean, the cursor would act as if it was loading something massive, even if I didn't even touch anything.  And when trying to click something, it would basically stall out to the point of essentially being unusable that it could be deemed as crashing.  I could not even restart it normally because the system would just stop while the cursor loaded with the blue lagging ring of death.  I would have to hold the power button to my computer to turn it off.  Then turning it back on in normal mode would not make anything better.  It is only consistently accessible in safe mode.  Now it randomly goes without crashing every once in a while.  Yet the common trend when I have access to it again, web browsing tends to lag it again.

I remember going to repair computer and using the farbar scan from bleepingcomputer and my computer was able to boot up normal and be able to open files and programs like normal (it even rebooted normally).  But connecting it to the interne... Read more

Some background: I made this PC myself. Running Win XP Pro 64.

From the very start, whenever I would turn it on and try to open programs it would not open them. It would get a hourglass symbol -only- on the bottom taskbar. The hourglass would go away once I moved it out on to the desktop. Also, if I attempted to restart, it would leave the desktop and then get stuck on the "Closing Windows" screen or w/e it says there.

Now, I could click on things, move the mouse around, open the start menu. I just can't open programs. Not even the calculator will open.

This happens on about half of the start-ups. I simply have to hit the reset button and try again.

Was wondering if this was something anyone had heard of.

Thanks,

Jon

Answer:Won't Open programs half the time when I start it up.

I would suggest a bit of file corruption - I would do the following checks to see if that is a root of the problem
Have your XP disc reafy, and click start, run, and type in sfc /scannow, and a small window will come up, with a progress bar-put your cd in your rom drive, and you will probab ly have to click retry several times, as windows replaces any corrupted files.
The other check, is to run a CHKDSK /R , either from the start , run, or, by right cking my computer, click manage, click on disc management , and then right click your partition, click properties, then tick both the repair options, shut , down, restart.

When I run a full scan using Malwarebytes the computer also crashes but not it doesn't crash on a fast scan. I can run a fast scan or a full scan using Spyware Terminator without a problem. I do not seem to be infected with any spyware. When I get the blue screen of death here is the error message

On Sun 4/18/2010 5:53:59 PM your computer crashed
This was likely caused by the following module: xgiesc.sys
Bugcheck code: 0x1000008E (0xC0000005, 0xED77387E, 0xB139CB0C, 0x0)
Error: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\xgiesc.sys

I am just an intermediate level user so please keep it simple for me. Is there a fix for me. i don't understand the message. I do not know how to find the module xgiesc.sys and I do not understand the error relating to the Kernel mode. I have an old computer running XP home :cry

Hi all,

My computer was working fine, then out of the blue a few days ago it began to crash. I am able to start the computer and it will work fine, but it crashes within minutes and reboots. The amount of time it takes before crashing is not consistent, but it happens fairly quickly. I can't complete a virus scan without a crash (I use ESET), not even in safemode. Programs will also crash/have errors occasionally before the whole system crashes -- but sometimes a program will run fine.

Occasionally I will get the blue error pages from windows when it crashes, and occasionally it will run DSKCHK's (and apparently solves problems, but it still crashes). I was able to do a system restore, but this didn't fix the crashes.

How can I isolate the problem when I can't complete a scan? I can't even reformat because it will usually crash before I am able to back up my files.

Any help would be appreciated!

PS. I just remembered that the first crash occurred after I began hearing a strange sound out of my left speaker... this had not happened before and the crash occurred minutes after, so I've felt like it was some sort of a virus.

Hello korellLets have a look with this and see what's going on http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Some types of malware will disable MBAM (MalwareBytes) and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first***Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..***Open up command prompt, type in following commands:XP >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and select "Run". Hi,

These are the steps which I would recommend you.

1. Try reinstalling McAfee and then try to run the scan
2. Try to delete the file if it is not a system file.
3. Try running a check disk at the start up
You may follow these steps to run the check disk
Go to command prompt and type Chkdsk /f /r
type "Y" if it ask you permission and reboot your computer
Allow the scan to complete at the startup and try to run the scan

My problem is that everytime I try to run a scan - virus scan my computer crashes. DASOS thought perhaps it might be memory related? I don't know.

He's seen my SDFIx - Hijackthis logs etc....

I'm running win xp - let me know if you guys have any ideas - I don't know where to start to provide additional information.

Since about a week now after a variable amount of time my system is unable to start programs that aren't already running. Some of the already running also crash when this happens. Shutting the system down or restarting in this state is impossible, the system seems to try but doesn't succeed. When I try it command line via the shutdown command the countdown starts and finishes but the shutdown stals when the system tries to log the current user of.

What could have happened to have caused this? I'm not sure, the only program I installed before this started happening is the open source game widelands (http://xoops.widelands.org/) which does have a tendency to crash in a very unclean fashion.

I did all the steps from the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure and have attached the logs. Except the one for AVG Anti-Spyware. When I did that scan my system got in the state described above. It did finish the scan, I was just unable to export the report (maybe that happens in a different thread or something?). The scan ended up quarantining one item: Adware.dudu located in c:\windows\system32\pCastCtl.dll . If you need me to redo the scan I will, I just wasn't sure if it was needed (and it's quite a long scan )

I'm not sure if this is a malware problem but it could be. Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Hi everyone.

Recently, I have encountered troubles with Windows 10. I am unable to open any programs, including Chrome or Edge. I can't even Power Down.

I have tried to reset my PC, but only comes up with "There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes have been made."

I don't have any instillation media as I upgraded last year from Windows 8.1, so I am quite stuck here. This is especially unfortunate as I have purchased a new graphics card (RX 480) and was hoping to install it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lately I've been having a problem with my computer, I will turn it on then after 10-20 minutes or so I'll try to open Taskmanager and it wont open, but the green status square appears in the start bar, near the clock (the box shows how much of the RAM is in use)... Also when Taskmanager wont open other programs wont either, such as AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, Excel, Word, etc.

I dont know what the problem is, I have 512 MB of RAM and a 1.1 Ghz processor, when it happens I'm not running a lot of programs, infact most of the time no program is running

The only way to fix it is to restart the computer, but I shouldn't need to restart my computer 10-15 times a day just so it works properly, does anyone know what may be wrong with it?

I was infected with a pile of trojans, and viruses, adware and who knows what else. I was trying to do some work from home, so I moved my security down and I think this is when I got the dump. Dumb I know. SuperAntiSpyware found almost 200 in files and registry. I also used SmitfraudFix to remove SmitF. I downloaded Hijack this, but I can't access it because every time I try to open a program it asks what I want to use to open the program, and one of the programs listed is called weryu456y 34fg erhr etfyg r. This is a program that always opens when I turn on my computer usually with an error message, so I never worried about it. Now its getting on my nerves. I also am unable to access anything in my control panel, I get the message windows/system32/rundll32exe "application not found". Can someone please help me with this, I just want to run a hijack this log so that I can get rid of this stuff.

Answer:Infected, Unable To Open Programs

Some malware infections target .exe files and without repairing that file association your .exe files will lose functionality. The first thing to try is to check your file association for .exe files. Open the "File Types" dialog box in Windows Explorer or My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab. Scroll down to where .EXE would be in the alphabetical order and make certain .EXE is not there. If it is, then edit it there by changing the association to Application. Select the New button, type in EXE for the extension and select the Advanced button. From the list pick "Application." If that does not resolve the problem, try downloading EXE File Association Fix and save to your Desktop. Extract (unzip) xp_exe_fix.zip and double-click on xp_exe.fix.reg and choose "Yes" to merge it into the registry when prompted. Once you get a successful message delete the file and reboot. Also see:"Unable to Start a Program with an .exe File Extension" "Fix or Restore Broken .EXE .LNK .COM Association Caused by Virus"Note: Some of these steps involve making changes in the registry. Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable.

Ok, so this is a pretty long story. I turned my computer on one day and all of a sudden i can't double click on files and programs to open them, when I do the icon just turns a lighter shade and nothing happens. I tried opening the programs from the start menu but it randomly says do you want to make a shortcut of this file on your desktop. the only way i could open anything was to right click on it and then open it. So i went on and then the problem disappeared and then reappeared. The next day I turned on my computer and my desktop changed itself to light blue.Same problem as before except this time when I right clicked on an Icon it didnt give me the option to open it. So I restarted again and then my desktop image came back but still it won't let me double click on files or open them from the start menu. I've ran spyware doctor, didnt find anything. should I run norton? Any help? please?

Hi there:
I am unable to open Programs and Features in WIN 8.1 on my 1.5 y/o Surface Pro 2. Noticed the issue about a week ago when trying to delete an older version of Java that was hanging around. Everything else seems to be working okay and I have not lost the internet at all. I was a beta tester for MS OneCare and I remember that this issue is a sign of a virus infection of some kind. Using Trend Micro Internet Security which comes up clean. The UAC has been turned off although the HitmanPro log says enabled.
I have followed the MG Malware Readme Guide faithfully. The UAC is still turned off at this point as I have not moved on to Step 5 as per the instructions.
Please advise and thank you all so much!! Rob Allen

Answer:Unable to open Programs and Features in WIN 8.1

Re run Hitman Pro, activate the 30 day free trial and have it remove all it finds.

Delete this:
C:\Program Files (x86)\CaUtThePrice

Give Ccleaner a run (not the reg scanner, just the cleaner itself) to be rid of a chunk of temp files.

Run Hitman again and attach a fresh log for me.

Explain how things are running.

Hi, This is my first post and would be grateful for your help. At work my computer is a dell using Windows XP Professional (version 5.1 service pack 3. Last week a popup box came up and I assumed it was the security virus and shut my computer down. Then I started it up in safe mode and ran malewarebytes scan. It found 2 files infected (Trojan FakeAlertRP Gen) and (Trojan.FakeAlert). Both were quarantined and deleted succesfully according to the mbam log. When I restarted the computer I wasn't able to open any programs such as Microsoft Word,Excel. I recieved an error box "application not found". I tried to open Maleware Bytes to scan again and was directed to an "open with" box. At this point I was logged on as a user (non-administrator). I logged off and logged back on as an Administrator (which I am very hesitant to do as I'm nervous about inadvertantly making changes that would damage the computer). As an administrator, in safe mode with networking, I was able to open malewarebytes and do another scan which came up clean, no infections. I was also able to open the programs I wasn't able to as a user.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

I've had a malware problem for about a month. Every time I remove it with malwarebytes or adaware, it will come back again as soon as I would use the internet (particularly if I did a search on google). I would usually get redirected to another site advertising something. Last night, I got redirected and quickly tried closing the tab before it could load, but instead, my computer rebooted itself and now I am unable to run any anti-malware programs (or even access the internet directly with firefox or explorer). I've tried renaming the mbam.exe as was suggested in another forum but that did work either. And I've tried to create a log so I can post it here but it won't let me download and open the DDS.SCR program. What should I do?

Answer:I am unable to open or run programs, including DDS.SCR

I'm fairly computer illiterate, so please bear with me.

ETA: Windows xp Pro version 2002 sp3
Dell Dimension DIM 3000
Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
2.99 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM

I have windows xp pro sp3 on my home desktop. Over the past few weeks, I noticed it was running slower and crashing more often. Earlier this week, I noticed that after I turned on my computer and logged in, I couldn't do anything. I couldn't open any programs by double clicking on the icons. If I attached my digital camera to the computer through the USB port, the automatic download wouldn't start. I can move the mouse around, but I can't open anything. Sometimes I can open My computer or a folder when I first turn on the computer, but after a few minutes, I also can't do that any more. I also can't shut it down without manually turning it off.

I ran my virus scan (AVG) and spyware (Spy Sweeper) in safe mode and got nothing.

2 days ago, I decided to try to open programs using the start menu/run. It worked. I was able to run AVG and Spy Sweeper again. I got a few tracking cookies through Spy Sweeper, and nothing through AVG. I googled and asked some friends. At their recommendations, I downloaded and ran CCleaner and Advanced System Care. I made the fixes they recommended. ETA: I also ran Malaware's program - one threat was found. I was able to download Adaware and was trying to run it when my whole computer crashed and automatically shut down and turned off. After the ada... Read more

I tried to "fix" my computer a few days ago.

I took it apart, cleaned it, and was done.

I put it back together, had a few small problems, but it was okay a little bit afterwards. I have an HP Pavillion DV6. The keyboard was unusable for a while and caused beeping on startup, so I detached it for a few days. (I washed my keyboard) Afterwards it was okay though.

However, after a few days of basically no problems, now, various internet browsers do not open.
Internet explorer is the only exception.

SRware Iron, a build of chromium will not open.
Google chrome will not open
Firefox will not open.

StarCraft II, for instance also will not open. However, the battle.net client WILL.
DOTA will open.
Movie maker will open.
However browsers STILL will not. The W8 taskbar shows the program highlighted white as usual-as it does with all open programs- but the white fades out after a few seconds, and that's probably when it drops to 0% cpu usage in task manager.

Other programs that actually do open appear to consume CPU usage normally.

Runescape will
Minecraft will
Microsoft word will
Adobe acrobat reader will.
Notepad++ will open.
Cmd will open.

When I say "don't open", they appear in Task manager at a decent CPU %, and afterwards they drop to 0% cpu usage and float there indefiniately.
After a while, when I go on and do other things, they can occasionally open. However this is very tentative. Of course, SCII is a large prog... Read more

Ever since i got a windows security error saying my computer is infected, it wouldn't allow me to connect to the internet.
Eventually it stopped appearing, and my norton 360 was turned off, and i couldn't connect to anything. Some i could connect to: "Run as administrator" .. "open with" also appears. but then i choose a program to open it up with and it still wont let me.
I cant download files. Desktop icons "dont exist" and some files or prgrams don't have associated files with them ??? What is this?

It only happened when Windows security (which i don't use) came up saying "virus, download or have a free scan". i ignored it, and now my computer hardly works.
any help plz

This morning I did a system restore due to contracting malware. After the restore when I tried to open any program in windows I received a dialogue box saying 'choose the program you wish to open this file.' When I selected ie another dialogue box popped up asking me to click 'run' It looks like it wants to download, but of course I know that windows shouldn't behave this way.

Online research recognized the problem and suggested downloading a program called FixExe, but I am in no position to download anything since I am unable to open my browser.

Furthermore, I am unable to access safemode as my F8 key is not responding.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi there:
I am unable to access the Programs and features in the Control Panel on my WIN 8.1 x64 Surface Pro 2. I ran across this issue with the last 3 days. I am using Trend Micro Internet Security anti-virus which comes up clean. SuperAntiSpyware is the same. MalwareBites free comes up clean and the MR Antiroot kit said there were no items found.  The FRST would not run initally in normal mode as it said the "Windows was protecting my computer."  It did run in Safe Mode however.  There was a warning about not being able to verify the FRST because the internet was disconnected, but I was able to proceed with the scan.  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated as I realize this is over my head and there is something really nasty onboard.

You guys have had this before I can only imagine but didn't see this thread in this section. I have been fighting an issue for over a month. I think It started after I resubscribed to Kaspersky a few months ago. Most programs wont open or when they do its 10-15 min to do so. No mouse at times. Unable to acsess start screen on other files. Will get stuck in a restart/shutdown which I will then do a hard reset. After it comes back the issue remains. I am fairly capable of trying different things but have had no luck, chasing "fix's" So far I have tried the following:

-Uninstalled and reinstalled chrome
-Installed malwarebites and removed 144 "threats" had read Kaspersky and mw bites were competing for CPU so I uninstalled it. currently not on my machine.
-viewed kasperskys cpu usage in task manager at the most for a moment is 23% typically 3-4%
-contacted kasperskys support asking about its functionality within windows 10. they had my select an option in settings "concede resources to other programs
-disabled Kaspersky "protection extension in chrome
-reset winsock and restarted which worked for a day (yesterday) now back to same.

I think that's it. I had read about an updated driver but got a little confused on which. Also concerned that each "fix" I try is creating a new set of issues. Would be forever in debt for some help. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Unable to navigate and open programs

Hi, sorry to hear of your problems.
First, let's check the effect of 3rd party programs: what happens if you do a clean boot (including for the sake of it disabling AV protection and disconnecting your internet for safety)?
How to perform a Clean boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

If no change, also download and install Nirsoft's Shellexview, and a. hide all MS items b. disable the rest.
This will check the effect of 3rd party shell extensions.

If no change, reverse the above.

Now - if you've not done it previously- from an elevated (admin) command prompt do
chkdsk c: /F

then
SFC /scannow
and post back your results.

Note: Disk imaging is very strongly recommended. A disk image allows you to restore your PC partition/disk exactly as it was when you created the image. So, in under (say) 40 mins, you can restore a PC to how it was, and have the option of replacing a hard disk (for better or new), and have a full backup from which you can recover files.

Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect - free- plus external storage medium + their boot disk.
Using disk imaging regularly and before and after any major change can preserve your PC and your sanity, allowing you potentially to recover from disaster without technical help.
