computer slow to boot, slow response, very slow internet, fans on high - HJT log

Question: computer slow to boot, slow response, very slow internet, fans on high - HJT log

(adding system info):
Dell M90, Vista, all updates current.
Wireless: AT&T Expresscard

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

Preferred Solution: computer slow to boot, slow response, very slow internet, fans on high - HJT log

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: computer slow to boot, slow response, very slow internet, fans on high - HJT log

Any thoughts, anybody?

Hello, I have a Dell 5558 Inspiron.  the internet is very slow to load.  My wife has a macbook pro that runs circles around my PC for web browsing.  I have tried various tricks to minimize startup functions and background apps.  is this a hardware issue that can be upgraded?  would upgrading the GPU, upgrading to SSD, or adding more RAM help?

Answer:slow internet loading, slow youtube response: Dell 5558

also, this unit has an intel AC-3160 wifi card.  can this be upgraded or adjusted to work better?

Hello Techspot!!!!

I have had my laptop for nearly 3 years but I wouldn't deem it to be a poor performance laptop. Recently I have been getting slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling, and it is very frustrating!!! I share the BT 3 homehub with good connection speed which was checked and found fine! My housemates laptop has started having the same problem as mine and I really want to fix this issue. The internet, keyboard and scrolling speeds vary everyday but overall are slow performers. I have looked through some of the threads and have seen people posting long threads of code etc :/ Is there anyone out there who has the time and patience to help me fix this problem? It would be most appreciated!!!

Many Thanks

Dan

Answer:Slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling problems

First, get us

make/model of all PCs
of the internet modem
and any extra router attached.
Is this a rather new ISP for you and/or are the PCs newish or older ones?

Did you every have good response? HOW long ago?

My computer just recently has been running painfully slow. Boot up takes about 10 minutes while log in time has increased a little also. When I attempt to open my programs now, some wont open until 15 minutes later, after I already gave up on them; some don't even open at all. Internet explorer works but takes about a minute to load the homepage and loading times vary. Sometimes it loads quick, sometimes it seems like it has stopped responding. Sometimes explorer completely freezes and I get the "checking for solutions" message. I am really getting frustrated because I have ran all of my anti virus anti spyware, malware etc. I have pccillin antivirus, malwarebytes, ad-aware, and spybot search and destroy, all of which say my comp has 0 problems. Itunes seems to be extremely bad in loading because i can try for 30 min and not get it to load even after uninstalling and reinstalling. I also have cleaned out the comp using ccleaner and have defragmented. I am running low on options and don't know whats wrong this time. Please help!

Answer:Slow boot up, slow program response, freezing

You may have some hardware problems.*** Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.*** A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option AB. If you have only one RAM stick installed......run memtest...1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive. 6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start... Read more

Less than a week ago, I used Control Panel to disable Google Chrome automatic update checking & installations. I did this because Chrome sometimes automatically checks for available updates and ties nearly all of computer resources while some unknown process associated with Chrome occurs. I thought this was because of the automatic update checking and installing, which why I turned this off (through Scheduling Tasks, in Control Panel.)

Just a couple of hours ago, I fresh-started the computer (Windows XP, s.p.3, 2.0GHz processor, 512MB RAM, Norton Internet Security 2011, Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 7.01, Google Chrome (belief up to date, 15.0.874.121 m)), visited internet using Internet Explorer - NOT CHROME - and had not yet even opened chrome during this user session. A few minutes after the internet usage, the computer became suddenly very, very, very slow, and Norton File Insight indicated high memory usage from Google Chrome. It reported "setup.exe" as the file causing this. I clicked to see where file is this was file, and after maybe 5 or 7 minutes, a folder opened in response indicating C:....CR_2D830.tmp\setup.exe.

When the Chrome business finished, apparantly not accomplishing anything that I could tell, computer responsiveness returned to normal.

I just wonder, is my computer so affected not really well suited for Google Chrome Browser? Also, must I completely uninstall Chrome in order to make sure this unknown process regarding Chrome... Read more

Answer:high memory usage, google chrome, computer SLOW response

Uninstall Chrome if it bothers you that much. There seems to be a new version of Chrome weekly so it's something that comes with the territory.

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

Hello, all. I just joined this site, after installing HijackThis. Here are my concerns:

Despite having an up-to-date copy of McAfee Security Center running all the time on our home computer, I'm fearful that something may be up. With essentially nothing running, it frequently dogs badly. Checking out Windows Task Manager will show high CPU usage but, in the "who's getting high percentages of CPU" listing, it's almost always "System Idle". I would expect CPU usage to be really low. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

I've done tmp file cleanups to no avail.
McAfee reports everything is fine.

I stumbled upon someone else who used HijackThis. HijackThis sounded cool, was easy to install, and use. I've pasted the contents of the HijackThis log below. If *anyone* has a suggestion or a clue as to what I could try, I'm all ears:

Hello,

I am experiencing a very frustrating scenario on my machine.
It started out of the blue. I have dial up still and I hardly ever
get on the internet. maybe only an occasional Google search.
It started during a period in which I had not been on the web for at least a week.
*When I click on a folder it stalls and then opens after a few seconds.
*Videos played off my hard drive stutter.
*Startup takes longer than usual.
*Basically, any task I try to perform is stalled.

I have performed the following actions:
ScanDisk
Checkdisk
Defrag
Ran Malwarebytes in Safe Mode and Standard
Ran Super Anti Spyware in Safe Mode and Standard
Ran Hijack This
I have checked programs running on Startup and cleaned that out.
I have 90GB of free space and 1GB of Ram.

I also have done in depth research into the DMA/PIO
possibility.
I am showing UDMA 5 for my HDD, and DMA for my CD/DVD.
It never displayed PIO at all anywhere. However, the symptoms
associated with a HDD reverting back to PIO match what I am seeing.
Is it possible to be in PIO mode, even though it displays DMA?

I am at a loss for what it could be...Please help...Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Answer:Slow response time. Videos stutter. Slow startup.

This may be irrelevant but when was the last time you changed the MB battery? I have had a lot of machine and still do, when the battery is dying funny things can happen. I sure looks like you have covered all the other bases!!

I started with problem here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-8/1089279-solved-video-hang-up-new.html which I think was handled well.

In the process of installing the new hardware, a couple concerning things happened. I had a tough time getting the 24 pin PSU-mb connector in and I feared damaging the connector on the mb side. I also had trouble with routing the SATA power supply cords to the hard drives, and had to pinch the connectors pretty tight against the wires they were connected to to squeeze them through parts of the frame inside. They are not squeezed in their connected position however.

But everything seemed to work great for a while. Both my new video card and PSU seemed to help my system. But after a while I started noticing things were getting slow, clicks not registering, any web browser locking up frequently. The problem got a little worse over time and now things load incredibly slow, though when they load they can run smoothly for a bit of time and then abruptly freeze again. Startup often takes a minute and shutdown can take sometimes more then 10. I often have to press the power button on the case due to a locked up program and then wait a very long time.

I checked my sensors with 2 different programs and they both show me consistently getting 2.128 volts on the 3.3 rail. I went back to my old vid card to see if the problem was the new one all along, no luck. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting all the PSU connectors, still no luck.

Seems to point... Read more

Hello,
Today, I was messing around with a PS2 emulator (PCSX2) on my computer, and when I decided to restart the computer to move some files (the file explorer was saying "this folder is in use by another program"), my computer took a whopping three minutes to boot! When I was finally in Windows, the file explorer was very slow (I had to refresh each time I moved something), the desktop had the same problem, the trash bin took about 5 minutes to respond, and the shut down button didn't work anymore. These problems all started at one moment, and haven't occured before. Other things like the internet and games worked just fine. Since, I've restarted a couple of times and come across to solutions for pretty much each individual problem. But I haven't come across a solution for all of these problems at once.
I built this system myself, about a month ago. My specs are: Intel i5-6500, Sapphire RX480 Nitro+ OC 4G, 8GB Crucial RAM, MSI B150M Mortar, Crucial BX200 240GB SSD (Windows is installed on this drive) and a 1TB WD Black Caviar HDD. If you need any other specs, I'm happy to provide. I am at a loss as to what to do!

Answer:Slow boot, slow file explorer, slow trash bin and no shut down

Welcome to the TenForums.

If you could describe messing around. Were you dual booting to this emulator or did you visualize it within Windows?

If in Windows, assuming you have restore points enabled, I would perform a system restore to an earlier time.

Assuming that goes well I would look at Macrium Reflect to Image your system , at least your boot drive. You can run regularly so you versions of your boot drive.

If you were dual booting let the forum know.

for about the last week or so i have noticed Windows is taking a lot longer to boot than usual. upwards of 4+ minutes.

i have run an AV scan, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, Spybot S&D scan and cleaned up trash with CCleaner. i disabled all unnecessary services except for Avast which still runs the engine even though i disabled all the shields.

there were a few infections found which i was able to quarantine and delete.

If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. Over the past couple of weeks my laptop has slowed down very much, there is constant HDD activity and internet activity, I would assume I got a virus or something from somewhere, I scanned the computer with Avast and it found nothing, so I scanned it again with McAfee and it found nothing either.I tried to remove a couple of BHO's and miscellaneous entires I found and it wiped out my browsers, I primarily use Firefox and occasionally use IE.

Thanks

Hi,

This problem started a few days ago and I'm not sure what is wrong so I'm going to describe what is happening. My computer is running Windows 7 64-bit. The last thing I remember doing with the computer running fine was watching a stream from justin.tv or a youtube video, followed by a standard computer shut-down. From then on, the computer boots to the login screen at around the same speed as before, but from the login screen to showing the desktop takes over 5 minutes. The screen is black with the white cursor being able to move (my desktop background is not black), so I know my computer is not frozen. After 5-10 minutes, the desktop icons and background show up, but everything runs very slowly, from opening folders and programs. Firefox and internet explorer cannot even load a page and the program freezes.

The computer still runs fine in safe mode and I am able to access the internet and browse fine their. I have run through the suggestions from the slow computer checklist on bleeping computer. In safe mode, I have run complete scans of Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware and Avira anti-virus with no threats detected. I have also tried running scandisk in an elevated command prompt (as an admin) in safe mode, but I get the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" and the scandisk never completes. I also ran CCleaner and defraged my computer.

I have no idea what is wrong with my computer and I can't e... Read more

Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features.
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Computer displays the following :
3.8 windows experience index
Intel pentium dual 2.0Ghz  processor
64 Bit

Has Ccleaner installed
has Comodo antivirus and Comodo cleaning essentials installed.
All virus scans  find no infections,  and report that all is well and protected.  ( B/C of the way the computer is operating i'm doubting that and betting there is an infections of some sort)

I Have run Comodo cleaning essentials and  results find no abnormalities or infections.
Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.
have run rKill  and it  finds  no abnormalities  or infections.
All virus scan results  find no infections.
Windows updates is activated  and  all latest updates have been installed.... Read more

Hi flywelder Maybe we aren't looking at an infection here. There's tons of reasons why a system can slow down, and not all of them are malware related. Let's try to take a look at this issue under another angle shall we?MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

Im looking for some assistance on these two matters.

Firstly my Computer is taking along time to load up at start, I have only uploaded 1 new program in the last month or so and that is PPmate ( a Live steaming program).

Hello,

I was here a few months ago, with my computer/firefox running slow.

I've had malwarebytes anti malware  running ever since.
A couple weeks ago the computer has literally come to grinding halt.
When I start the computer it takes a couple of minutes to go from the "Starting Windows" screen to the Windows login screen.
From there it take another 3-5 minutes to boot up. I have Soluto installed and I watch all the programs that are being started during boot up and how much extra time has elapsed for everything to load.

I've run spybot search and destroy,  Avast, eset, and SuperAntispyware and nothing has been detected.
All programs have a large lag time from when i dbl click the icons to start them.  They run slow, I type something and there is a delay before I see it on the screen. Also I'm always seeing the "not responding" message.

Here is the speccy link:

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/MzcuTBZF3HP1gYFSP85FccO

I also have the hijackthis and minitoolbox report.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!

Donato

Hey, basically computer's been a bit slow and tried clearing some stuff and done other things, but still no luck, to make things worse internet's been a lot slow and when using either firefox and internet explorer. For example when going on youtube some videos would freeze in the middle and i would have to reload the page, and sometimes takes ages to load a page.

So here's my DDS log and hopefully the problem can be diagnosed, thank you.

Hello, my computer has been extremely slow on boot and my desktop has been hijacked with a message about changing it to a website. I also have a program called "error fix" showing up on my desktop and I have no idea where it came from. I've run Malware Bytes twice on the computer with numerous problems found. After running it the second time, I got a message saying I needed to run CHKDSK which I ran. Also, my internet is running very slowly and I just got a message that says "A program on your computer has corrupted your default setting for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has reset this sietting to your original search provider, Live.Search (search.live.com). Internet will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providors."

Here is my Hijackthis Log, if you need the MBAM logs, please let me know and I will post those as well.

Hey I recently bought a new computer that is much better than my old one in stats but its not acting like it.

Windows XP
Service Pack 3
Intel Dual Core E5200
2.50GHz
2GB RAM

Now it was running ok to begin with but then the internet started having problems. It kept dropping out or fluctuating in speed and nothing seemed to fix it. It didnt happen on my old system it sat nicely at 54MB/s all the time.

Then the rest of the computer started going slow to start up so i got rid of some start up programs and desktop items which didnt seem to do much. And now ive noticed that when songs are playing in itunes they skip seconds every now and then.

Also when i click for programs to come up after i wait till everything is started up properly i have to wait a minute or two before they open. And burning DVDs has doubled in how long it takes.

Any ideas of what could be wrong, ive scanned for viruses using Avira and spyware using SUPERantispyware, ive cleaned registry using Registry easy and removed all unnecesary crap using CCleaner.

It got suggested that my computer was going slow because of AVG8 so i got rid of it and with got Avira but it slowed up again.

Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your time!

This is my first time posting a question on bleeping computer. We are so thankful that you are out there to help us and not rip us off. I think my computer is infected. My desktop starts up very slowly, my internet connection is slow (it's slow in pulling up websites and some never come up). I'm getting lots of pop ups (even though pop up blocker is enabled). When I go to open the control panel, a flashlight pops up as if it is looking for it (it eventually does open but it takes a while). I had a problem at one time with a lot of POS.TMP files and followed advice from posts on this site to get rid of them. Well, my current problems started when a friend downloaded a music program. I believe it was called Soundman. When I noticed the computer acting funny, I went into the control panel and deleted it along with some other programs I found (PPC Booster, P2P Max, Ron Tool Adsoftinc, Wyzo, Eco Bar). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hello.

Win XP Pro SP3
Pentium D CPU @ 3.00 GHz
1G ram

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

I then manually updated the remaining 9 OS up... Read more

Erm hi. Last night my PC was absolutely fine, and today it seems to be completely broken.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

Thanks again.

I have run Adaware, A2 anti malware and Spybot and cleaned all that I found as far as malware, spyware, etc. but to no avail. The lights almost constantly shows my hard drive is working. for about the last week or so i have noticed Windows is taking a lot longer to boot than usual. upwards of 4+ minutes.

i have run an AV scan, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, Spybot S&D scan and cleaned up trash with CCleaner. i disabled all unnecessary services except for Avast which still runs the engine even though i disabled all the shields.

there were a few infections found which i was able to quarantine and delete.

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?
2. If I should get my LAN card replaced, what model do I need that's compatible w... Read more

Hello,My dual boot 1.5 TB (Seagate) has been acting up. Whenever I boot into XP or Vista everything is slow. The HHD light blinks at a constant rate no matter what's going on. The XP and Vista progress bar moves at a rate equal to the HHD light. I have used Seagates Seatools and the drive  has passed the long test (4 hours) numerous times. I have emailed Seagate and am awaiting their reply. I would like to know if there are any other tests I can use to see what is wrong and what my next course of action is. Thanks.

Answer:HHD does not boot, slow response

Have you fully checked the computer for viruses?

My computer takes several minutes to boot up and then is very sluggish while operating. I run CCleaner all the time, but that seems to have stopped helping.

As for my usage, mostly, I'm on the Internet, use email, and perhaps MS word. That's about it.

I've had my computer since 2003 and know that I likely have many programs booting up that I no longer use. I feel like reformatting the harddrive and starting all over again. I'm hoping it won't come to that.

I saw http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650 , but am hoping to get help in walking through which programs to remove from startup as well as remove programs I no longer use.

Hello,

I've recently experienced some difficulties with my Toshiba Satellite. Initially it started with a verrrry slow boot up, and then all programs constantly freeze (desktop, internet browser, Microsoft Office, start button, you name it). I ran a malware and antivirus and cleaned up the hard drive, which seemed to solve the problem, until all the same problems started up again. Re-ran the antivirus and nothing popped up, but not sure what it could be if not malware/virus. Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated!!! I am personally limited in technical prowess, and really appreciate any wisdom or insights! THANK YOU!

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer! My name is Thisisu and I will be helping you with your malware related computer problems.I do have some basic rules while we are working together so please read and follow them:Be specific!
If you come across a problem while performing any of the steps listed here, do not simply state "It did not work." Tell me the exact error you encountered if one was given to you. For example, this is a much better response: "When I ran the ____ tool, an error box appeared on my screen and said 'Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.'. There is only an 'OK' button in the box."Do not run any scans/fixes on your own!
If at any time you feel that you can handle the rest of your computer problems on your own without my help, just let me know! I will not be offended as there are others that need help with their computers. However, do not perform scans and/or fixes that I have not asked you to do on your own and then expect me to continue helping you because I will not!I will close the topic if I have not heard a response from you within 72 hours.

I recently cleaned up my "Start Up" items (this may or may not be associated with the problem I am having - may be coincidental). No viruses, Firewall at Medium security, SpySweeper in operation. 512MB RAM. XP Pro. Working on Cable Modem.

Pages are either VERY slow to load, or will not load at all. Often I must Refresh to get a desired page to show up at all. Many pages will not load at all. "We're sorry but the internet contant you selected is not currently available" message is common.

AOL loads, however slowly. IE is also slow loading the "home page". Going from either home p[age to through a link is a tedious process (including even bringing this form up).

Any ideas as to what the issue might be?

Frank

Answer:Slow Internet Response

First, have you tried powercycling your equipment (like your modem and your router)? Basically you would want to turn both off (if you have a router) and then turn back on your modem first (allowing it to remain on for about a minute) and then turning power back on to the router. Many times speed issues can be correctly by this simple process.

Also, if you have only been using IE then you might want to try clearing cookies/cache/etc if you haven't already. Go to your Tools menu at the top of your screen and go to Internet Options. Depending on the version of IE you have you could see different things like the option to "Delete All" or you might see separate buttons for "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files". Either way it is a good idea to clear both of these up.

You could try downloading a different internet browser like Mozilla Firefox from getfirefox.com just to see if it's something with the program or not also.

Also, I would run some speed tests to see the speeds you are getting. Especially it might be a good idea to run a speed test while your firewall is on and to run one after you have disabled your firewall. Speed tests are available at:
speedtest.net
speakeasy.net/speedtest

Some kind of trojan invaded my computer I believe. I ran Symantec and it deleted a bunch of entries but the auto-protect kept popping up to block something labeled Downloader and file "kernel32.exe" I was eventually able to delete it in safe mode after turning off the system restore. But then the auto-protect kept blocking Adware.Webbuying with file name qmlqrib.dll (both of these were in system32 folder according to the log), but there was no file by that name anywhere. I ran Ad-Aware which removed two entries with a level 10 threat assessment named BookedSpace and Win32.TrojanClicker, however the Adware.Webbuying continued to be blocked by Symantec. I then ran Spybot which found and deleted numerous entries and I no longer get auto-protect for Adware.Webbuying. However, I continue to get pop-ups, internet is slower, computer is slower, and it seems to prevent downloads after a certain point in time (haven't made it past 20% of a file from various different sites ranging from 4-20 MB). Who knows what else it is doing; hopefully not downloading my personal data. Please lend me a hand if you can. Thanks. I have included my HijackThis log:

Hi, came home the other night to find babysitter had been watching Orange Is The New Black via a "free tv" website and not used BBC iplayer or 4OD catch-up as suggested. Since then, computer very slow to start-up, hangs occasionally when at desktop and fan speed very fast for no obvious reason. I'm running Windows 7 Home basic on a Dell 1548, with 4Gb RAM and have had Comodo Internet Security Premium (free) running smoothly for about a year. I've checked the Task Manager, and nothing unexpected is running. I've performed a full scan with Comodo AV and Malwarebytes but nothing has been found. Please find my DDS log below. Greetings whattodo2 and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that. ===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. I'm sorry, I don't know the proper protocol. I have a topic posted in the forum "Internet Response Time is Very slow", and I was advised to follow the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log." As instructed, I have performed the following steps (numbers correspond to the Preparation Guide)3. I ran a disk cleanup. Webclient/Publisher Temp files will not clear, but the others have been cleared.4. Ad-Aware and Spybot. Ad-aware just had a couple of cookies and a couple of MRUs. Spybot said "no threats". 5. I didn't run Housecall as I didn't want to install Java. Panda: I guess I can't figure out how to run it. This is the third time I've tried, and although Task Manager applications says it's running, Processes shows system idle at 99 or so. It runs for a couple of hours but does nothing. BitDefender ran and showed no problems. I ran Kaspersky, and it shows no problems.6. McAfee Stinger detected 2 files: C/Download free keylogger described as Adware-Url.gen. I don't know what those are or if they deleted them. The instructions say put a check in the box fy "Auto Clean". but I couldn't find such a box. I looked for C/Download on my computer system and could find no such creature.7. I did not install a firewall other than Microsoft yet, as when tried it I had all sorts of problems. A different story for a different day, and I shall install one later.8. My Microsoft Windows is up to date.9. Here I am... Read more

You could test your phone line. Grab a phone and plug it into the phone jack you use for your DSL modem. Press any number to get rid of the beeeeeep so all you should hear is silence. If there are any sounds coming down the line other than almost perfect silence then you should have your line checked out.

My internet access (both Firefox & IE) suddenly got very slow on my Win7 computer. I held out for a couple of days hoping it was temporary. I thought it might be an msn problem because I 1st noticed it in hotmail & about the same time my Windows phone failed numerous times to download an app. I seem to remember once accessing an site that had a list of current/active msn problems; sometimes only in certain areas. Or was that Verizon?

Today I called Verizon & spent 1 1/2 hours with a tech who seemed to know even less than me (if that's possible). I became afraid that following her directions would make things even worse, so I discontinued the conversation.

Accessing hotmail.com just now gave . . .

Hotmail often says "Task could not be completed. Try again" . . . going to next message, different mailbox etc.

I have an 8 year old laptop with an inter celeron chip 1.6 ghtz, 1 gb of RAM. I am currently running IE9 with Vista service pack 2 installed. Internet page loading is tardy to say the least. I also have a works laptop, again quite old, with an intel core 2 duo (1.66 ghtz)with 2 gb of RAM and this runs fine using the same BT wireless hub.
Is my 8 year old laptop just too slow?, CPU usage goes up too 100% when accessing pages but goes down to 2 - 5 % once in idle mode.I can't see anything in Task Manager that might be slowing things up
I have Microsoft Security essentials installed dual core
Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Answer:vista IE9 and slow internet response

Check task manager again and see how much memory is used with the browser you're using. 1GB ram is a bit low for Vista.

Hey, this is an issue that has always bothered me, and I'm wondering if someone around here can help. I consider my machine to be pretty fast (see specs at left), and when I'm just using the OS without any apps running, everything is essentially instantaneous. Except for 'My Computer'. When i open this window, Windows has to think about it for a good 3-5 seconds before anything appears in the window. I think its because i have 2 optical drives and 2 emulated optical drives, but with 2 GB of RAM I dont think this is a valid excuse. Is there any way to get windows to show what it has recognized already without waiting to hear from the cd\DVD rom drives?

Answer:slow response from 'My Computer'

Are there any discs in the optical drives?

Answer:Computer slow response

How exactly is it slowing down? What operating system are using? How much hard drive space do you have left, and wht is the total capacity? How much memory do you have? How many icons are in the system tray (bottom right) when you first start the computer?Press Ctrl - Aly - Delete. Now count how many progams you have.

I wrote about two weeks ago about my computer acting very sluggish while on the internet and I was told to defrag and delete the contents of my temp files for the Int. Explorer. I did all of this and it seemed to work for a few days and now I am back at the start.
I am running a Pent. base computer with 32 meg ram and a 4 gig HD that is 1/2 full.
My computer is non responsive for about 1-2 minutes every time I click on a link or try to open a program from Windows. The hard drive runs for a couple of minutes and then shuts off until I click on something else. I am on a DSL line too so that is the pits when I am trying to surf the web.
What else can I check?

I'm not sure what's wrong but it takes like 1 min to open a document, or to start up a program. I'm not quite sure how to fix it, because I'm not quite sure what's wrong.

It started happening like a week ago... So my computer didn't start out like this.

My computer specs are:

2.40GHz Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo
with 3.00 GB of RAM

I ran a registry cleaner (more specifically RegCure) but it didn't do a thing (that was noticeable)

I ran Spyware doctor and Zone alarm (virus and spyware) scans with no virus or spyware located, so I'm completely out of answers. BTW I'm not that versed in computers.

So, any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I've got one heck of a problem with my computer running EXTREMELY SLOW!! The problem started small, i.e. taking about 5-7 minutes to boot-up, and gradually worsened. It now takes about 30 minutes to boot-up in "Normal Mode". This started about two weeks past, at which time nothing unusual occurred. No new programs loaded. Spyware/Adware and Virus scans are negative. HDD temp. is about 113F. CPU use seems to be normal. However, a "Memory Meter" shows that the memory maxed-out frequently when attempting to run any of a number of programs! On rare occassions, runs fairly fast (at speeds that I would call normal)!! ALWAYS runs fast when booted in "Safe Mode" - which I'm using right now! Only problem in "Safe Mode" printers are not available, and some other programs will not run - apparently a LOT of drivers are not loaded in this mode! The Task manager shows a LOT of processes when the computer is operated in "Normal Mode" and perhaps half as many in "Safe Mode". I've run every kind of test that I can think of and can't seem to pin down the problem!

The fact that the computer runs faster in "Safe Mode" vs "Normal Mode", would seem to indicate a problem with memory - - but if that were the case, why then does the computer, all of a sudden, speed up (although, as... Read more

Hi,
My laptop(Win7) takes a long time to bootup. First it takes me to the windows logo screen and then it goes to a black screen and stays there for atleast two minutes before it gives me the login screen and then it takes another two minutes or so to before the desktop is loaded up. Also when I scan the computer with bitdefender for viruses, it takes around a day to do a full system scan and did not find any viruses. I have downloaded iobit driver updater and updated all the drivers, but that did not fix the problem. I have also installed iobit malware fighter and malwarebytes anti-malware and both scan came back negetive, The iobit performance monitor shows that the ram useage is 61% or higher all the time.

Any suggestions to fix this would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

hello..i am sharing broadband and it does seem slow when 2 PC's are online together. Is it because the FIREWALL on the router is checking each data packet for feasibility? If i switch the firwall off would i acheieve much faster response times? i have a Netgear DG834 ADSL FIRWWALL ROUTER MODEM...thanks for any advice!IQ

Answer:Do firewalls slow down response times to Internet?

If you have a software firewall, an easy way to find out is to disable it.If it is a hardware firewall, it may not be so easy.

Hi All

I'm having a bit of an issue with the computer. When browsing things just aren't very responsive and it takes time for click to take effect if you understand. In addition to this in general the computer seems a bit sluggish to respond even when just using MS word or excel.

I have seen people advised to download and run hijack this which I have done but for some reason it won't save the log file.

any suggestions?

I have AMD-K6 3dnow prosessor. I just bought some more memory 64mb ----> 192mb, and I think my computer is just slower than it used to be. There has been error like "Hardware monitor found an Power error, chech power management for details" or something like that and I think that is the main problem. When checking Power management there is 3 fan speed meters. One works correctly, other one has error "[err]" and 3rd is "ingore", and if I try to change it there is that same error.

So what is this? I checked fans and they seemed to work. Atleast they weren't stopped or anything. And yes, I cleaned fans with vacuum cleaner

Thanks and sorry about more and less bad english. I hope you understood.

Answer:Fans and slow computer.

Many many many many many many many years ago when I had my AMD K6II 233, I did not notice that when the fan is about to $#!+ itself* , your computer preformance will decrease.

2 common signs for the fan $#!+ing itself is :-
. a. too much dust in the heat sink. Which you can clean out.
. b. as you watch the fan spin around, you can actually make out the words COOLER MASTER on the center on the fan. Which you are best you to replace the fan.

After doing one or both of those things, i did notice that my AMD K6II 233 performance did improve.

I was told to put this hijack here. My ISP went from 4Mbps to 8Mbps and they said it would be faster, but because I have the free zone alarm, it would reduce the speed. I disabled it, by:
1. Disabling it through zone alarm, re-booted, still slow.
2. In the start up, I took out the check mark in zclient still slow.

My system boot real slow besides all of the above trouble.

Can you please look at my hi-jack and see if there is something that is slowing it down.
Thanks

Alright so here is what I have been noticing.

On a Windows XP Pro machine. I double click on the "My Computer" icon and the it takes probably about 10-25 seconds for it to load and display everything. I notice that if I switch to my account and I click on "My Computer" icon it opens up pretty quickly with no hang time. This has happened on several other Windows XP Pro computers and I can't seem to figure out what is wrong. I have tried REgistry defrags, virus scans with a cocktail of virus removers, registry optimizers.

Now next in line is trying the XP CD and do an OS Repair but I want to know if anyone out there has found the solution that doesn't take so long for it to be fixed.

My computer is not running Norton. Im using Panda. The other computers are using norton. I mention this because other posts say its norton. However, I have to reiterate that when I swicthed user accounts I could open my computer fast and I was running norton.

Thanks everyone in advanced!

Regards,
DummyTron

Hi,

My notebook response has been so slow for the past 2-3 weeks. I don't remember installing any harmful software before the problem began.
I am running on Vista Home Premium 32-bit with 4GB RAM.

This slowness happens to me no matter if I am connect to the internet or not and also in safe mode. However, it does not occur all the time.
For instance, I could begin typing this post normally but there is also time period when it takes about 5 seconds for the letters to appear on the screen or when I scroll up and down or open a folder in windows explorer. This lag time happens to all of my office applications, IE, windows explorer or even when I right-click on the desktop screen while there is no other application running at all.

I tried running online scan, e.g. BitDefender, ESET and some of the free malware programs like IObit Security 360 and Malwarebyte's Antispyware but found nothing. I also have Symantec AV installed since I bought this computer. I know this is quite heavily loaded but why my problem only just occured recently.

I also tried disable a few start-up programs in msconfig but to no avail. I have run CheckDisk and even tried to restore my computer to period when I am sure this problem has not occurred to me, but still my computer is still slow.

I suspect that my notebook is infected beyond my little knowledge to solve it. That's why I am here asking for your help.

I have followed the given instructions, and attached are all the... Read more

I recently ran an adwcleaner scan and Malwarebytes scan and it found several items ( over 20) to be deleted.  I may still have the logs available to post if needed.  Neither of these programs had ever been run on this computer before.  While the speed increased some, I am still having some issues logging on to the Internet some and email issues.  I am concerned I might still have other unwanted programs installed that I did not find.

I am working on this computer for someone else so I already know there are some redundant security programs on this machine.  Any suggestions on what to clear off would be appreciated as well.

Thanks for the help

Have an older Compaq computer (3.33 GHz Processer, 512MB Ram)that over the last 2 months has slowed horribly. Opening a browser or clicking a link at times can take 1-5 min. Can hear the drive running up but there will only be one browser open and nothing else eating memory in task manager.

Have run:
Avast Antivirus - nothing found
Malwarebytes - nothing found
Super Antispyware - found 3 tracking cookies - removed
Eset - nothing found
Disk Defragmented
ATF Cleaner used weekly to clean off unecessary files

Please let me know what I can run to help clean up this computer - or see if there is anything malicious running in the background.

Thanks

I noticed that in IE 11 on Windows 8.1 that there was this slightly perceived typing lag when entering text in fields displayed in the browser. This lag would not be present in Chrome, Opera, and others... so that's what would make it noticeable. When you type fast, it is most noticeable, but not so bad as to obstruct typing or create errors.

However, now in Windows 10, the lag has increased. Painfully so. I find that with my typing rate, the keyboard input cannot "keep up" and I lose letters! I'd have to go back and correct works due to missing letters. I've resorted to keeping Textpad open and typing all my text there, then copy/paste into the browser fields. The different is very noticeable.

I've searched around and found a few scattered tips about dealing with this, but nothing seems to help. I have to believe there's a setting SOMEWHERE that is responsible. Or... is this a byproduct of Microsoft key logging?

Answer:Slow typing response in Internet Explorer and Edge

NOTE: I had this problem on build 10240, and still having it on 10568.589. And it's NOT a problem in other Microsoft products like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc. Chrome, Opera, and Safari do not exhibit this typing delay/response problem. It's only IE and Edge that show it.

Hello,

I have a Gateway P-6825 laptop running Windows Vista 32-bit, Service Pack 2.  The processor is T5250 1.5GHz and it has 2 GB RAM memory. I realize it's a slightly older machine and the processor is relatively slow, but it seems to have slowed down a bit in the last few months when I access Internet pages.  I am not getting any signs of malware infection but I'm wondering whether it is laden with too many programs or something else.  Any insight you can provide is truly appreciated.

Thanks!

I ran the logs and they appear to be clean. I know she needs to install at least another gig of RAM and also get rid of some of her files.

My husband has windows xp on his computer, and we have verizon dsl and the computer used to be faster. When the computer starts up it kind of gets stuck in the windows xp screen, (5-10 minutes) and then eventually it will come up. When we go into internet explorer sometimes the computer will kind of freeze up with the hour glass on the screen, and I have to x out of it, then open up another screen and it comes up faster. Could it be that we have too many things running in the background? Is there some way I could get rid of some of these things to make the computer run faster. My computer is also slow because I have a wireless adapter. My husbands computer has sp1 on it, and was built by my nephew. Please help me out if you can, thank you so much for your time.
