Solved: Slow XP system & slow internet HJT Included

Question: Solved: Slow XP system & slow internet HJT Included

Hello,
I have an XP Home pc that's experiencing slow internet and slow OS. I also had a problem with Comcast mail. They put a block on my account saying it was sending bulk mail when I didn't even know it was doing that. They mentioned it could be spyware. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Preferred Solution: Solved: Slow XP system & slow internet HJT Included

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

PC has been quite slow recently on starting up. Harddrive has been a bit louder aswell. I get A LOT of random ping flucuations when im playing games (like counterstrike) which have gone down a bit when i did an AD-AWARE scan.

Already done an ad-aware se scan and a nod32 scan both have found some items and removed them. Any pointers from the log? Im on Vista Ultimate 64bit

My inlaw's laptop is running super slow. I've downloaded AVG (which I use on my laptop) and it found 50+ instances of malware, then ran Adaware and it cleaned a ton of stuff as well.

Still running slow and I know there's some other things on here that need cleaning. If someone could help out, it'd put me in real good with the father-in-law, who is pretty illiterate when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks!

Okay I'm going to do a full PC check but all my systems seem fine as of yesterday. A little background to help others help me I'm on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 environment with no other server connection but one machine, I have 3 shared drives created on the server and am running Shared Point Services 2.0 as well and all my computers on the network have a login script assigned to them when booting onto the network so their drives are automatically mapped. Oh and I have POS old Sony laptop running as a proxy using Winproxy 5.0, but it has about a gig of speed and 512 RAM and the connection goes: in from the outside, to the proxy, line directly to server, server assigns ISP's by DHCP internally.

My computer is a Dell Optiplex 2600
P4 2.0 gig
512 meg PC 2700 333 meg RAM
onboard graphics and soundcard

Here's a question to start from another thread I posted: About two months back or so I noticed if I put cd's into my PC at work I must have downloaded a rootkit or something because now I cannot play some cd's that I can play on my home computer and others in the office. Now in the future is is safer to burn MP3's on an external harddrive and listen that way or avoid Sony cd's?

Now to the problem, I put in a burned cd this morning it starts up WMP 10 fine and I'm listening to Back in Black then all of a sudden my computer freezes. Crashes my financial program which I think nothing of because I am using Master Builder 11.2 by ... Read more

Thanks guys, I haven't done this in awhile so please bear with me...

After an older system of mine seemed to suddenly slow down and a current Symantec scan came up with nothing I ran Housecall on my system. Housecall found Adware_aeropopups and Adware_memwatcher before Housecall itself slowed down to nothing and died. I could not use Housecall to clean the malware/spyware cookies. I ran the Java Housecall plug-in; not the ActiveX. I then ran defrag and that helped some for the system so it seemed. However, the internet is stll quite slow on many occasions.

I ran Hijackthis and have pasted the log below along with a few system details. I only see GoogleDesktop in the log below as a potential problem. Please help! Everything else seems normal to my untrained eye. I will try adaware next if it is still free to use.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 and IE 7.0.5730.11
I run Symantec Norton AV and have installed Avast in an effort to access another AV library. I know they will conflict from time to time and will remove one of them later.

My system has been very slow for the last 24 hours. Startup was slow. Programs not loading. Even the google home page wasn't loading properly.

I restarted my router and the issues seem to be better but I think there is still a malware issue in the background somewhere.

Hello, last week the computer when booted simply went to a blue screen and said something along the lines of (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE) sinse then I have used the win 2k disk to repair the system. The computer now boots correctly but very slowly. I have followed recommended steps to remove viruses and malware, by turning off tea timer from S&D spybot, then installing SUPERanti spyware, Malawarebytes antimalware, installing CCleaner, and finally Hijackthis. I did full system scans with the three programmes mentioned above and they found a trojan vundo, which has now been deleted. Unfortuantly the computer is still running very slowly and the internet like a snail. The computers log showed some very strange messages which mean little to me other than red crosses and caution signs usually mean bad things. Attached the logs from the various programmes listed above, I would appreciate suggestions.

Answer:Solved: Win 2k system and internet very slow

Internet still super slow, used to be super quick on this PC, just had a scenario where all programes that were open were non responsive I could toggle between the various programmes but they would not respond opened up IE fine but as soon as open it would not respond. Restarted PC all working ok again.

I have been having problems accessing some web-sites and any program that downloads other than windows cannot detect a network. I installed service pack 2 for xp and programs like Download accelorator plus, pokerroom patcher, ubi.com patcher, trymedia downloader and gamedaily downloader do not work. Thinking it was the firewall on service pack 2 I unistalled the service pack and it still happens. I have been getting a transcoding failure xerces panic error and VCMain.exe common language runtime debugging service : application generated an exception that could not be handled ok to terminate program or cancel to debug Process id= 0x220(544) Thread id= 0x224(540) at start up. I have a new Dell Inspiron with CPU usage running 25-90% frequently with only Google desktop and McAfee running. Sometimes the problem appears to be related to processes related to McAfee Suite (free version 2007 from Comcast). We also got my wife an identical machine the same day which runs same McAfee suite with no issues. I have put the two machines side by side and verified all hardware and configuration settings are identical on the two machines.

The only way to get the CPU usage down is to hibernate (not restart) the machine and then it will be only 2-3%. I have run every scanner, spyware program, rootkit finder, you name it and nothing found. I also reimaged the machine to Dell factory setting with no effect. I am at my wits end here, below is HiJack this logfile and I am hoping someone will see something the other efforts have missed. Thanks!

Hi, my system has been extremelly slow and i suspect spyware. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot search and destroy and then I ran Hijack this. My log is posted below. Prior to running hijack this I did disable system restore, showed hidden files and booted up in safe mode. Hopefully I have done the proper prep work. Thank you in advance for your help.

IN the past day out of the blue I hear the clipping sound and then the computer just freezez and nothing works keyboard etc... I have to hold down the power button to turn off and then on again.

I always have norton, microsoft antispyware and webrro spy sweeper running in the background and have never had a problem. Yesterday however two things showed up that spysweeper asked me if I wanted to keep them or remove them.

1. dumprep 0 -k which is part of kernelfaultcheck which showed up in my mscofig section out of the blue, I unchecked it for now.

Somethings Fishy. I ran a full scan of norton, spy sweeper and MS antispyware and none came up with anything.

Any idea what's going on?

below is my hijack log, thanks.

Hi Welcome to TSG!!

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named.
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Please note once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall.

Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

The internet on my Acer laptop is so slow after a system restore, it takes 25 minutes to download a 17 MB file on a 5 mbps internet connection.

The reason why I had to restore my laptop, is due to me deleting some registry keys.
Why I delete the keys in the first place (made everything open in notepad), is due to me trying to delete zone alarm toolbar (nightmare)
I also download some other programs which include lastpass, truecrypt, file shredder, novastor backup, threatfire, zone alarm firewall, bufferzone.

other important notes.

if you need me to run any tests on computer just ask me and I will run the test.
My laptop is a aspire 5750G
I have already used cclener, smart pc care, slimcleaner.
it's not a virus
I get error messages such as sever hang up and can not display webpage
I am using Google chrome as my browser

So How can I fix the speed of my internet?

Answer:[SOLVED] Help, the internet on my acer laptop is slow after system restore

hi all-

here is another plea for help--my laptop, running windows xp2, was cruising along great, when all of a sudden today all activity dramatically slowed down (most noticeable when using firefox and in surfing the web). i had not installed any new programs or anything else, and had just recently reinstalled xp2 about a month ago. not able to run ad-aware for some reason, and not about to run spybot on a consistent basis (and when i do run it, nothing is found).....

i have attached my HJT log below. many thanks in advance for any and all suggestions! i would like to avoid having to reformat again....

cheers
k

Limewire and P2P is definitely a source of your problems!

Add remove programs and remove – LimeWire and P2P Networking and DeskAd Service if present

Get these

SpywareBlaster 3.2 http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE 1.05 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their

they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize
Print this and boot to safe mode

Hi recently my computer has been running very slow. Many internet pages will not load up at all and the very few pages that do load up take a long time. Most files take a while to open too. Trying to download files off of web pages also takes a long time or sometimes does not work. i.e. trying to download hijackthis took about 10 attempts. I've included the hijackthis log. Any help would be appreciated.

for about the last week or so i have noticed Windows is taking a lot longer to boot than usual. upwards of 4+ minutes.

i have run an AV scan, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, Spybot S&D scan and cleaned up trash with CCleaner. i disabled all unnecessary services except for Avast which still runs the engine even though i disabled all the shields.

there were a few infections found which i was able to quarantine and delete.

my system is:

Answer:Solved: Internet connection slow, downloading slow

Hi Dano.
Are both pc's hardwired or one wireless through your router?
Are both slow at the same time?
Have you tried eliminating the router and hardwiring one pc directly through the modem.(will require a power on reset of the modem)?

Do a speed check
www.speakeasy.net/speedcheck
Any recent hardware/software changes?
Any error msgs ?

Is this cable or DSL?
Knowing some of these things will assist the techs here to delve further into the problem.

Hey all!

Recently, my computer has been acting up. It's gotten REAL slow, and I mean REAL slow. For example, what used to take 1-3 seconds now takes 10-13 seconds to load. I have Windows Security Alert telling me my system is at risk (I don't have an anti-virus program as I cannot afford one right now).

I used the SuperAntiSpyWare free program listed on the fourms and it found nothing.

I got flooded with popups at some point last night and since then the computer has been completely screwed up. System is always at 30%, Firefox crashes constantly. IE is ok but very very slow. I did a TrendMicro housecall and it found and deleted a trojan but clearly something is still very wrong. In my Temp folder, files called "Prefetch" keep getting created and I have no idea what they do or where they're coming from. So I ran a hijackthis scan, suspecting it was a rogue BHO. Can someone look at this and tell me if there's anything wrong with it?Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 11:34:18 AM, on 29/10/2009Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\IRW.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\Brightness.exeC:\Program Files\Boot Camp\KbdMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\b... Hello,

Thanks to browsing your forums I was able to remove wintouch.exe from my system. Using SDFix, SuperAntiSpyware, and others I'm now malware free...or so I thought.

Ever since I succesfully deleted the virus my internet connection is extremely slow. The normal operations of my computer are back to normal, but whenver a program hits the internet, it slows down considerably (It took me 30 minutes to register and get to the post page).

I went through my processes and found alg.exe, which I know to be a trojan. I deleted it and wiped the registry keys, but that seemed to do nothing. The problem seems to be my CPU usage, as it spikes to 100% everytime I open IE. I can only figure that a fragment of WinTouch is left behind and trying to do...something.

I know it's not my network as I have 2 other computer hooked to the same router...and they are lightning fast...

For the past week now, weird problems have been arising. I first noticed something was wrong when I couldn't sign into MSN and kept getting the 80048820 error code. I searched the internet for a solution and despite there being many methods, none of them worked or were already in place. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that didn't work either so out of interest I tried an old version of Windows Messenger which seemed to work okay on most occassions.

During the same time of this happening, my Internet connection has been unusually slow. I ran Broadband Medic and it oddly found nothing wrong. Also when it does seem to work, only certain websites will load. Hotmail, eBay, sending Orange texts and even this forum have all been inaccessible so out of curiosity I tried to get on the sites using a proxy site and I managed to get on Hotmail. Although it does seem weird for the sites not to load normally.

This is the same case for all my web browsers (I normally use Firefox)...my Internet Options seems correct, I've made sure my Firewalls aren't blocking anything they should be and I did a thorough scan of my PC in safe mode last week so I'm stuck for ideas now.

Thanks for any help

Hey, Im new to these forums, and Ive seen many people that have been helped. Hopefully, you guys can help me too =)

My computer has been working very sluggish, and my internet, I use Mozilla Firefox, does not work properly. It has been slow, and sometimes it wont even go to a website that I want to go to, and in the bottom left, it says done. Also, random pop-ups would pop-up in internet explorer even if I am using mozilla firefox. My whole computer has been running slow, even microsoft word. It asks me to save things that I dont even close. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it a lot.

Also, whenever I check in my msconfig, in the startup tab, I have random things that say "motekvrm", and "type32wc" and "pqrhayfa". These all have checkmarks in them. Even if I uncheck them, whenever I open msconfig 2 seconds later, it rechecks it automatically. The commands all say C:\WINDOWS\system32\motekvrm.dll",s or C:\WINDOWS\system32\pqrhayfa.dll",s

Whenever I also open my taskmanager, it always has rundll32.exe in my owner applications that run. I just try to close it, but my computer still runs slow.

Ive tried a lot of things, like spyware doctor, AVG, and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. They work fine for a little while, but whenever I restart my computer, it happeneds all over again.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it a lot. Thanks in advance

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

The P2P programs you have installed expose you to risks because of the nature of the P2P file sharing process. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

Go to add/remove programs and remove all P2P programs from your machine!

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if... Read more

Hello to everyone, I am new to the site and found it by researching solutions to a problem I am having. Just like many others I am sure. I have reached the end of my string of ideas and could use another set of eyes to look at this situation for me. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have for me as I am at my wits end here.
Approximately 10 days ago my internet connection went from the promised 8Mb with 20Mb burst rates to about 250-1100K/sec on my desktop system. This speed loss can be seen in IE, Firefox and Chrome. All the while my laptop has continued to get decent speeds, averaging a low of 3.5Mb w/ 14Mb burst to 9Mb w/ 27Mb burst rates. I have reset my router, my modem and had Comcast out here twice before realizing this was a problem with my desktop system and not my internet connection.

My Test History from DSLReports.com(Broadband Reports.com) is here:

http://www.dslreports.com/testhistory/209184/db245

The top result is from my laptop, the ones below are all from the desktop system until you reach the 6000K result which is the laptop again. All higher speeds come from the laptop.

My desktop configuration is:
Gateway GM5688E running Vista 32-Bit,Phenom 8400 2.1 Ghz, 2 Gigs of Ram, 320 Gig HD, ATI Radeon HD3870.
** Note: This system does not have McAfee installed. **
Steps I have taken so far:
I connect to my network Wirelessly - I used a Belkin Wireless G PCI card(F5D7000), which does not promise Vista Support. It has worked flawlessly with the... Read more

Some kind of trojan invaded my computer I believe. I ran Symantec and it deleted a bunch of entries but the auto-protect kept popping up to block something labeled Downloader and file "kernel32.exe" I was eventually able to delete it in safe mode after turning off the system restore. But then the auto-protect kept blocking Adware.Webbuying with file name qmlqrib.dll (both of these were in system32 folder according to the log), but there was no file by that name anywhere. I ran Ad-Aware which removed two entries with a level 10 threat assessment named BookedSpace and Win32.TrojanClicker, however the Adware.Webbuying continued to be blocked by Symantec. I then ran Spybot which found and deleted numerous entries and I no longer get auto-protect for Adware.Webbuying. However, I continue to get pop-ups, internet is slower, computer is slower, and it seems to prevent downloads after a certain point in time (haven't made it past 20% of a file from various different sites ranging from 4-20 MB). Who knows what else it is doing; hopefully not downloading my personal data. Please lend me a hand if you can. Thanks. I have included my HijackThis log:

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

My daughter's computer was running extremely slow. I ran Search & Destroy, Lavasoft AdAware, Ewido Anti-malware and Avast anti-virus. They cleaned up many things.
I noticed she also has Filseclab Personal Firewall-had Windows firewall originally, but it had been turned off-I turned it back on. Which firewall should be used?
I've included a HiJack This logfile. Could someone offer me an opinion on recommended actions-as far as computer clean up and firewall use?
Thanks

Spybot took the Vurtumundo out, but there's still a lot of spyware and malware. Computer is super slow, hardly able to open Internet Explorer.

Dell XPS...sorry, this is my friend's computer, not sure what else it is.

I'm having a strange problem where some time into an online session, browsing will get extremely slow and I get many 404s - to the point I have to reboot, and everything's suddenly ok again. For a little while. This is with both IE and Firefox. Do tell me if anything's up with my log. Thanks.

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Internet browser (IE 7) very slow on some sites, many others totally inaccessible (IE hangs up and never fully loads). Also receive Windows security alert that Auto Update is not enabled and I am unable to start it.
Have run McAfee virus scan, Adaware, Microsoft Live Security Scanner - the MS Scanner was able to fix most it found EXCEPT Vundo.gen and Tonick.gen - so I guess these two still exist.
My HTL is as follows:

If any one can please help to see what I can disable from "Startup, Services...etc." I would extremly appreciate it. I've ran spyware scans disk clean ups but they don't seem to help.

hi guys,
my computer seems to be running really slow, have recently installed tiscali for broadband, it works but sometimes goes slow and sometimes when i try and click on options on various websites it will select a totally different thing. it seems as though something is running in the background - when on blank desktop, even when no programs open and not connected to internet the mouse pointer has an egg timer next to it...

i've installed zone alarm, ezvirus, ad aware, spybot and spyblaster to try and combat this however it is still running slow.

any ideas?
thanks, Jennie

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

My computer is running so slow. I'm constantly getting "this page cannot be displayed" when using IE. Those "free" malware scanners keep finding all sorts of errors/spyware/etc., but none of them will remove it unless I get the paid version, which I want to avoid doing if possible.

Also there are several programs on the add/remove programs list that I would like to delete, but I can't delete them for various reasons.

Can anyone help? This is my HJT log from this morning:

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

Hello.

Win XP Pro SP3
Pentium D CPU @ 3.00 GHz
1G ram

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

I then manually updated the remaining 9 OS up... Read more

I'm running XP Pro with 512MB memory, but all seems to have slowed to a crawl. I'm also running AdAware, SpyBot and MS anti-Virus programmes as well as AVG Virus scan--I've been told that having a number of these programmes loaded isn't a problem as long as I don't run them simultaneously, but could that be my problem.

I'd be grateful if one of the experts on forum could have a look at the log below and let me know if there's an answer within.

Many thanks

sorry, if this not the right place please move. I did many google searches cant seem to find the issue Im having, or maybe lack of the right key searches. You guys are my last hope.
I will try to explain my problem as clearly as I can. And so sorry about my bad grammar and spelling, trying to post this asap.

first off give small history of my PC. I bought my PC new Sept 2001. A HP Pavilion with 1.3 ghz, 256ram, and a 55gig hard-drive originally came with WinMe, since then I upgraded to XP. I kept my PC case clean, didn't try to install programs my PC couldn't handle, didn't go to any sites that knew were bad with viruses and such also had Malwareytes/spybot/avast/hijackthis to use, didnt install any toolbars, and tried not to have many programs open at the same time. I basically kept my PC simple with use.

Anyways around June I noticed some odd slowdowns
While playing Winamp and running a torrent with speeds of more than 400+ the audio would become choppy. This also happen when I would open FF, IE or any program while running Winamp, the audio would be choppy.

Extracting 700mb files from Winrar would take around 8mins

Playing Youtube, WMP, of VLC videos would be slow and choppy.

Transferring files from one PC to another over a crossover cable would take much longer. 4gigs of files would take about 20mins or so.

Virus scanners, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot would also take much longer than usual.

So, about 2 weeks ago while my brother was on Youtube my... Read more

For the past few weeks I've been trying to solve internet problems that have been affecting just one of my computers. I think this originally started when I was forced to reset my router to factory default. No other system on the network seems to have been affected.

The current problem with my computer is that sometimes the internet connection will slow down by a lot for a few minutes. Much of the time it's normal speed, for for periods of a few minutes it will slow down to essentially nothing, but won't actually go out completely. When I try to load web pages under these conditions, my browser (all of them) just sits there loading nothing forever, but won't actually give me a "connection lost" screen. Also, it might only be me, but the connection drops seem to get much worse late at night. I've tried just about every solution I can think of and can't even figure out exactly what the problem is.

The computer is a desktop on wireless. I don't think can move it to a place where there's a wired connection.

Hello,
I have several questions and I think they all probably have to do with virus or spy ware, so I thought I would start here. Operating system is Windows XP

1.When I start my computer it is taking about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes to get to the log on screen. Then, the System 32 folder opens up and is just open on the desktop. This has never happened before.

2.When I go to the Internet in IE I generally can't access items on the page. Example. If I open my bank website, it won't let me go to anything else on the page. It acts like it's doing something, takes forever and then goes back to the page I was on. I don't have the problem if I access the Internet through AOL.

3.When I access Google,a help page,my bank site, even your site, either in IE or AOL all of the print on the page is in a large font and if I print anything it is in this large font. Does my computer know I turned a year older? What gives with this?

Things I've done.

I have been reviewing the forum and seen that this is typically caused by a virus. The person reporting the problem was asked to download "Hijack This" and run it. Then post the results. I have done this and was hoping someone could help me with my problem. Below are the results from running "Hijack This".

Thanks in advance !

Hey guys basicly went to a warez website got a file and opened it and bam at this for 10 hours and still cant get rid of the virus and log online.
So i had to put old hard drive in and boot up online.
this file is loading wscntfy.exe , but still keeps coming up when i stop/term the process.
This file didn't load before, now it does. system is slow.
I run a scan with avg, nothing found. Kaspersky found alot of files but all but 2 were password protected. So i manually deleted files.
Spybot , nothing found.
will be right back with hijack log.
