Preferred Solution: Solved: Help with Pop Ups....time for a cleaning??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey everyone!

A friend of mine gave me an HP Pavilion dv1411se notebook and I would like to give the fan and heatsink a thorough cleaning, although I'm pretty positive the fan doesn't work at all. However, I've seen pictures online of how much dust can build up on the heatsink and I'd like to get that taken care of. Ultimately, I would like to replace the fan and possibly the heatsink altogether, but for now, giving both a proper cleaning will give me peace of mind. My objective is to pull the thing apart in order so do so.

This will be my first time doing anything like this and my reason for wanting to is the fact that computer repair shops are just too damn expensive for my budget, plus I'd really just like to know how.

Does anyone have any good words of advice before I tear into my laptop? I've read somewhere that static electricity can "fry the system." Is this true? I'm planning on getting rid of the dust from the heatsink with a vacuum, but I've also read that this isn't always a safe practice either.

I'm gonna use the HP Maintenance and Service guide to assist me:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00636251.pdf

If anyone else has any other tips or suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

I have completed the Major attitude removal guide. I have attached the 2 reports for someone to provide feedback on what is wrong with my desktop PC. My infection occurred when I upgraded from the internet security suite Kaspersky 6 to version 7 which is still active now. Please can a qualified person interprete the reports that I have attached?

Cheers!

Attached is another log file that was too big to attach in my original post.

The desktop PC still appears to be infected because the machine still operates slowly and prompts PID error messages from Kaspersky 7. Any help I can get is appreciated!

Hello, I'm sitting here with my Sony Vaio model PCG-61112L juuuust about cracked open and waiting to be cleaned. I've noticed lately that fps during games has been dipping, and i'll get gpu driver errors whe browsing the web, causing my display to refresh (always recovers). This is why i am cleaning it out now.

I've got my RAM chips, battery, and what i think is the hard drive removed, and all screws out. When i tried opening the bottom case, i then noticed that there is a small black cable attached to the case. I have no idea what this is, but it is attached to a ribbon thing next to where the RAM chips were labelled as "To MB." Sounds like it has something to do with the motherboard, but all i want to do is disconnect it or something so i can get the bottom casing off so i can clean this thing. Do you have a service manual for this laptop? My advice, since you don't sound very knowledgeable or experienced, is to stop what you're doing. Your problems about FPS & GPU driver errors are most likely due to other issues than the computer needing cleaning.

My friend has a laptop that he has had for about 5 years now. He has stopped using it because it is slow and often freezing. It is running windoes 7 i think. I said I would take it and try to sort it out for him as I know you guys would be able to help me. I don't think he ever did malware/virus scans. Probably everything that would need doing is going to have to be done. He has probably never done any updates to anything. I don't really know where to start so was hoping someone could talk me through it.

Answer:Cleaning up and removing malware from an old laptop for the first time

1/ Is there any Data that requires to be backed up first - That he needs ?.....DO THAT FIRST !
If not - i would restore it to the day he got / if it has a Factory Restore Partition.

2/ If you choose the Factory Restore option , goto the Manufactures site of the Laptop / enter the Model etc / follow the Instructions to Restore.

After that is done / you then need to do all Windows Updates / Antivirus / and Install your Programs.

3/ If you need to just clean it up / or the restore partition is not available , and just remove any Malware / Viruses etc....

Then you will need to post the Make / Model and wait for assistance in the removal of such and post various Logs as instructed.

Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions? Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

Hi! I have put a "Total Time" field in a form to calculate the difference in minutes from the "Start Time" to the "End Time". I was worried about getting the incorrect time span when the time crossed over midnight. Well, I got that part right, but when I enter times in the same day (1:15pm-1:30pm) it gives me the time difference PLUS 1440 minutes. Please tell me what I need to do to fix this! Thank you!

Total Time:
=DateDiff("n",[Date]-IIf(1-[Start Time]>[End Time],0,1)+[Start Time],[Date]+IIf(1-[Start Time]>[End Time],1,0)+[End Time])

Hi folks,

In power options you can switch off the monitor only by time idle. I would like to be able to set a time of day. I can't see an inbuilt way of doing this, so does anyone know of a good application which will allow me to do this?

Thanks in advance,
Ox.

Hi,

I am running XP Home SP3 on an Asus 1005HA netbook

Every time I boot up I get a message to say that either I can press F1 to enter setup to set date/time or press F2 to load default values

If I choose F1 and enter the correct date/time and press F10 to save and exit - XP then starts up normally but the next time I boot up, the same problem occurs.

[If I select F2, then XP loads normally]

What can I do to fix this?

Thanks for any help in advance

Hello,

I'm having a temperature problem and I don't have any experience in cleaning laptops and understanding when and how to do it. As far as I know, the problem is that my laptop is getting quite hot and I'm using it a lot, gaming included.

I'm going to post a couple of screenshots and a photo.

This is the temperature when I just surf the internet.

This is the temperature when I'm gaming, but sometimes it gets much hotter.

This is my fan outlet, as you can see, it has accumulated a lot of dust.

I hope that someone could help and maybe explain what does affect the computer's temperatures and how to clean this particular fan outlet. Oh, and maybe the fan itself has a lot of dust? I don't know. I have only removed the cover once, trying to clean the same fan outlet that you see (then it had much less dust in), but I couldn't figure out how, because it has some kind of cloth-like material glued to the case and I didn't wan't to rip it off, so I left it uncleaned.

The last bit of information I want to provide in this post is that I bought this laptop on January of 2015, and I did have a period, when I was using it on my bed (without any cooling pad or hard surface), but then I stopped doing that and bought a cooling pad. Which was too small for me and after a couple of months usage I gave it away, now I'm left without a cooling pad, but ... Read more

After a routine Trend Micro Internet Security scan it discovered I had Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive (not C:\). So I made visible 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' in order to delete those files. But when I clicked on the System Restore directory on the affected drive I got an Access Denied warning. Even after making the drive readable I got the same warning and cannot open the directory to delete the bad files. So I did a System Restore flush then rebooted to Safe Mode to proceed with the "Malware Cleaning Guide" cleaning. The first scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware showed no vulnerabilities. Then the online scan from Panda showed the same Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive. But then the log file from the Panda scan would not save to my computer. Am currently running the online Kapersky scan and online Trend Micro Housecall then will continue with rest of "Malware Cleaning Guide". But wanted to give this early heads-up.

System Restore has the ability to be turn off for separate drives or all drives. What did you use? Also the auxiliary drive (if removable) needs to be plugged in while you do this.

Answer:Solved: cleaning up

Never remove service packs or any updates unless they are causing issues. In general most unistall programs do not do a great job of cleaning up after themselves so you really can't count on them. Just uninstall any programs you do not want from the add/remove programs in control panel and defragment your hard drive after uninstalling them.

I recently changed our wireless routers security from W.P.A. to W.E.P.. I downgraded because my sister purchased a internet T.V.box so she can watch her favorite foreign language shows. The box only accepts W.E.P. encryption.

I use a WRT54GL which I loaded up with Tomato V 1.21. After the changes to our router, the laptop and one of our wireless dekstop PC (both machines with XP) keeps getting disconnected. My sisters' Ipod Touch works fine though. Sometimes it would show not connected but it actually has connection. Websites, I.M. and pinging worked but for only sometime and it will disconnect. I will reconnect (it takes longer than WPA) and would show connected then change to not connected after sometime.

Both PC and laptop only use the MS XP Wireless Zero Configuration.

Edit: Should I just forgo with wireless encryption (WEP, WPA) for MAC filtering? Or can I have both? Redundancy? Cheers!

I don't think it is a memory issue because I have over 50GB of free space. Another issue is that Internet explorer often crashes and closes all open windows with an error message.

I am posting a Hijackthis log so you can see what's running. I only really use the internet, itunes and manage photos etc. so I think there is a lot of superfluous activity which I'd love to get rid of...

Hello there, I keep reading throughout numerous posts that registry cleaning is actually harmful for your PC and does more damage then good. I was just curious as to the reasoning for this, and what sort of damage could i be looking at here?

Answer:[SOLVED] Registry cleaning?

Programs that claim to "Fix" your Registry, usually Fix it the same way a vet fixes a puppy.

Unless you know what you are doing, they will often remove valid entries and sometimes make the system not stary up . .

At best, they do no good . . "Cleaning" the registry will make no difference in how it runs

I can find and clear the cookies okay, but where is the 'cache'?
Would appreciate help.

Answer:[SOLVED] Cleaning Cache

"Cache" is most likely reffered to as Temporary Internet Files. Which can be deleted by either going into Internet Options in the General tab and clicking "Delete". Or right-clicking you're C: (or whatever drive has windows installed on it) > Properties > Disk Cleanup.

I have an unused desktop shortcuts folder created after I ran the desktop cleanup wizard. I'm a bit of a clean freak when it comes to the appearance of my desktop; ultimately I want to shove everything into my folders and have nothing but the recycle bin, My Computer and Firefox on it.

Unfortunately I don't know what to do with the unused folder - it has a windows media player icon inside and a strange IE folder - no icon, just a folder named Internet Explorer {871C5380-412A0-1069-A2EA}. When this is opened, ie comes up...twice. My theory is that one of the windows updates I recently installed was ie7, which deposited itself on my desktop, thus doubling the number of places it occupied. Does this sound about right?

In any case, how do I get rid of unwanted shortcuts - does deleting them actually remove the programs?

There a number of other installation icons that come with my various security program downloads, any tips as to where I should put them?

One last thing. A minor thing. But a thing nonetheless. I find those tiny little arrows on the corner of shortcut icons incredibly irritating, in the same way a rogue contact lens is irritating.

I have ran Norton and Ewido and cleaned out the viruses only to have them resurface after reboot. I have also done Spybot and Ad-Aware with the same results.
Following will be a Copy of my HJT and Ewido reports.

Hi. I today started get McAfee pop up alerts that there is "Pontentially Unwanted Program" on my pc. Below is the alert I get:

>>>>PUP C:\ProgramFiles\MySearch\bar\1.bin\S4Bar.DLL is a Potentially Unwanted Program and has been blocked from running on your computer. If you do not recognize it, remove this Pup. If you recognize it, trust this Pup, and then rerun the program that triggered this alert.<<<<

When I clicked to remove it I assumed it did and then I reopened my IE browser and an McAfee alert pops us that says (I am assuming it is browser hijack?):

>>>>Potentially Unwanted Program Found
Program: Adware - MySearch
File: S4Bar.DLL
Filepath: C:/program files\MySearch\bar\...
Status: Cannot be cleaned
Verify that the file is not write-protected & try again.

I turned off my system restore. I scanned with McAfee virus scan, it found two adwares and I clicked to remove them but I still get the pop ups. I also tried to scan with the online virus scan Panda software but when trying to download files before it scans it never goes past 6% download after many minutes. I used Ad Aware SE Personal and clicked to rid all that it found. I then downloaded Javacool's SpywareBlaster and installed and set it to protect my pc from other adwares.

Now I don't know what else to do. I would appreciate any help with cleansing this problem from pc.

Thanks in advance.
Devorah

i got a virus last night and i think i cleaned most of it by deleting the .dll files that i knew were virus. I also fixed them within my hjt log, but there is one file that won't let me delete and ive tried killbox. it is attached to lsass.exe file the lower case L file. I'm not a pro at looking at hjt so i don't know if i am missing anything in the log. It shut down my automatic updates and things are running funny, ie can't download things off the internet from direct links. I ran mcafee and spybot and cleaned somethings off as well, but im out of tricks.

heres my log, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

As you know, forwards of forwards of forwards people mass send without cleaning up are pretty irritating.

Every once in awhile, there is something "worthy" of forwarding to someone else.

Is there an easy way to clean the mess up? I know in OE, you could choose to forward without the little > on the side...but, in GMail, I'm not sure there is any option?

TIA.

My fiancee's computer has bogged down recently. Right now the Windows Task Manager Performance graph of CPU Usage is holding steadily in the 20% range, and bouncing up into the 30's, 50's, and even 80%+ when I'm not intentionally running anything.

I've scanned and cleaned up with PC-Cillin, Ewido, Spybot, and Adaware. No improvement yet.

Any thoughts?

OK... my Laptop as been slowing down fo awhile.

Recently, after reloading myOS and all my programs, I find that my browser has been Hijacked.

Recently I have removed IE (although I fear not completely ) and changed to Mozilla's firefox browser.

Yesterday I booted is Safe mode and ran Ad-aware, Spybot, Spyware eliminator and I cleaned with CC setup, HSremove,kill2me, CWshreader and ran a virus scan with Stinger.

Today I tried to load my Norton 2005 systemworks, but I get an error and cannot install. Additionally, something keeps trying to access the internet.

My Hijack this log follows:

Hi everyone,

I've been here before with serious problems on other PCs and most of you proved helpful. So I've come again with a fresh PC (not really, Dell) that has a lot of useless stuff on it. I believe this is slowing it down some. I did msconfig and got it down to 30-33 processes running. So far the only objects in my systray are NIS (Norton Internet Security) and volume. Now Norton is kinda annoying me (on my older PC I had Zone Alarm Pro, loved it) but since it came with the PC, you know. Averaging every 5 min. I get program control alerts "A remote system is attempting to access your computer". They are low and medium risks and NIS recommends "Permit Always". I didn't start worrying until I noticed it never stops. Who knows what crazy things got in here. Also, my connection to the Internet seems slower, alot slower, than it did on my older PC, cable connection btw. I want to get some spyware, etc, programs but not sure which ones to get. I'm not sure if some interfere with NIS or if some are just worth it. Spybot always seemed nice. Also earlier today, my daughter wanted to play games on cartoon network and she couldn't. I went to their help section and they said install shockwave flash blah blah blah. I did and nothing worked. I made the site trusted, allowed cookies from them, added them to NIS, windows firewall. NOTHING. But other sites worked. I still believe NIS is to blame for this. I either need to uninstall it or ju... Read more

Answer:Solved: New PC and I want to do some cleaning. NIS is frustrating me also.

Hi......I would start by removing Norton and rebuilding your securities with Z/A and perhaps AVG.

My PC was in a fire 3 months back, and I was just able to retrieve it. The insurance said they would not put it on the check, and that I must get it cleaned. It has soot all over the inside. I turned it on, and all it did was show a messed up image.

Now I never heard of a computer being cleaned after it has been in a fire. Is this even possible? If not should I just go to Geek squad and have them give me a statement saying a PC with smoke damage cannot be repaired?

I need to know if I clean out the administration ID on a computer, if the other ID’s are also cleaned out at the same time, I have never had to maintain a computer with more than one ID, although I have used and added programs to one.

I ask as the other ID’s of course do not have the permissions that the Administration ID has, and the other ID's stop me doing some stuff.

Is the only way to clean the other ID’s out is by making them temporary Administrators?

Computer is running XP Pro full version and service pack 3 all updates exccept still running IE7

I use QuattroPro 9 for spreadsheets. From time to time, it stops working and I have to reinstall the programme before I can use it again, and then it works for some more time. I usually use Vista Home premium, but a similar situations arises on a computer with XP (Home edition). This only happens with QuattroPro and not with WordPerfect which I use for word processing (rather than MS word).

Any help will be very much appreciated. I have tried the compatability option for the programme, but this does not help.

After contacting Avast support I was linked to Iyogi who they have outsourced for technical support issues. However, after linking you to Iyogi they instantly want to take over your computer to check for problems. After their anaylsis they inform you that your omputer could be infected and has thousands of errors and if you do not clean it up soon it could crash any day. They then go on a lengthy marketing ploy in an attempt to get you to subscribe to their annual maintenance program for a fee. I don't have the funds for this and I think it's disappointing that Avast wouild go to this type of support especially on their paid Internet Security plan. In the meantime I need to clean up my computer as thoroughly as I can to get it running efficiently again. Could someone tell me the best method to do this and or walk me through it since I'm not as computer literate as some. Thanks. Chuck

Greetings & Salutations

Happened along this here site in search of "dw15.exe" to find out what it was (Yes, a new poster and 1st time posting). From what I've seen thus far it's a very fine site. I'm in need of a bit of assistance here. Not a total newb with computers but not a programmer either. I just reformatted here two nights ago for the umpteenth time now due to blue screen of death errors and all sorts of other problems. As you can note below, yes, I use file sharing programs. What I don't like is Adware, Spyware and all the headaches, of which I have had many, that go with it. I would greatly appreciate whatever assistance anyone can give here.

Peace & Blessings
SForceJr

P.S.
Any additional information that is required please just let me know and I'll get right on it.

Did you do a complete format and install or just a restore?
What is the blue screen error?
You may have a hardware issue or something other than a virus causing you BSOD.

*I'm getting good use out of TSG tonight !*

Ok, so my crappy dell inspiron 600m was awesome for the first 6 months I had it, then it started to let me down. I've had it for 2 years now, and it's battle weary. It's crashed several thousand times, the hard drive is a twit, yet it keeps on ticking. In one crash incident I had to talk to dell, get an OS disk and start over completely from scratch, loosing everything. In the process of this, I was talking to some person from halfway around the world while my GF was
performing play by play steps on the dell. Well in the end she put 3 OS on it, and only one works, and it's been that way since last year. Now I'm interested in putting LINUX on it, and I want to completely wipe this bad boy out and take care of that pesky OS problem. I DON"T have an OS disk, but I do have the WIN XP boot floppies and chkdsk. I have a Linux UBUNTU live disk and I want to make sure that I can install Linux onto my laptop before I end up screwing myself over and having to go out and find another Dell Win XP OS disk. If I can even restore the dell to factory issue, that would allow me to install Linux, anything. Help !

And thank you in advance.

My HP is 2 years old and gets slower each day. I have defragged it and recently cleaned the registry w/ Max Registry Cleaner which helped somewhat. I would like to check to see what programs automatically open in the background when I boot and perhaps relocate or get rid of some of those. I suspect that this particular question has a simple answer. But, once I locate the list of startup programs, I imagine things could get more complicated.Equipment: HP Pavilion, Media Center Edition, (a1606n) Version 2002, Service Pack 2. When I install a new program, it often installs an icon on my wife's desktop. She does not have admin. priviledges. How do I remove them from her desktop?

Thanks,

John

Answer:Solved: cleaning wife's desktop

open 'My Computer'...

C:\Documents and Settings\(your wifes account name here)\desktop

at this point you should be able to edit what is on her desktop if you are logged in as the administrator.

without administrative rights she should be able to 'delete' desktop items by highlighting them and pressing delete, unless the configuration of the PC prevents non-admin people from this action

.....

As an afterthought... if the icon is installed under

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\desktop

you can 'cut' the icon out of this folder and paste it under

C:\Documents and Settings\(your account)\desktop

Answer:Solved: Cleaning case fans

Hi,
Not sure about the rest, but I use canned compressed air to clean out fan cases.

I was experiencing some problems with my pc's performance and decided to dust it out. I removed the graphics card, put the vacuum cleaner to it and put it back. I also vacuum cleaned the entire PC, but didn't remove the parts for it. (Also had the vacuum cleaner above the cpu/fan)
After that I started my PC again and it just shut down after start up. Then when I started through safe mode (which worked) I was able to start SpeedFan and could see that my CPU was burning up to 88 degrees celsius! Before I shut it down again it even went as high as 94 degrees.

I don't understand what I could have done to make my CPU go from around 50 degrees to 88 degrees by just removing dust. Is it possible the vacuum cleaner may have broken something?
I'm not completely sure, but I think SpeedFan told me the cpu fan was spinning at ~1800 rpm. I have no idea if this is high or low or if this should be adjusted or whatever.
Any insights are more than welcome, and I'd be happy to provide more information should you need it.

My Windows drive is getting smaller and smaller with all the updates from MS and stuff. I read here that cleaning the update uninstallation files could free up space, and I found out I have about 700MB of those files.

Is it recommended to delete those, and will it cause any harm to my PC, like crashing etc? What other files should I clean up from the partition to retain some space for the time being?

Thank you.

I have a:

eMachines T1840
Intel Celeron 1.8GHz
640 MB RAM
XP Home 2002 SP3

It has grown increasingly slower in response time (ie. IE "churns" for 20-30 seconds before opening). I suspect that I have a lot of garbage loaded at start and other processes running that I don't need. How can I go about cleaning this up?

Hi ,

Recently I've begun to receive a box (everytime I boot my PC) asking me to install Sitebar, accompanied by a blank cmd box... Since then whenever I try to check something on ebay the page does not respond, as well as when I try to access paypal or amazon in IE. All other sites I've tried to visit have worked fine, but these 3 seem to be the only ones that give me a problem. I've also noticed files in the root of C:/ that somehow just appeared, and seem to continue coming back when deleted... Such as "is.exe, low.exe, mmxateam.exe, sw.tab, tb.exe, unsix.exe, xe.exe, and zxvcc73x (winrar file)." Would love to be able to access those sites again, as well as clean up the rest of the PC as much as possible . Any help is more then welcome and thanks in advance for any that is given.

Here is my HJT Log:

OK, My HDD was almost full so I was cleaning up some unneeded files and doing routine maintenence....Disk Cleanup, CCleaner Defrag and so on....

Anyway... I do not know at which point the Optical drives went away but they are no longer showing in My Computer and are listed with Yellow ! in device manager.

Optical Drives are---

AOPEN DUW1616/ARR - DVD+RW/DVD-RW - I found and dnloaded the drivers for this drive.

&

LITE-ON LTR-48247S CD-RW - I can not find a driver for this specific drive, just a universal?? driver from Lite-On.

I tried dnloading the drivers and un-installing the optical drives and reinstalling with the new drivers but end up with the same results... no drives listed in My Computer and Yellow ! in Device Manager.

System Restore is turned off so rolling back to previous version (before I started cleaning) is not an option.

Any help to point me in the right direction and show me what I am missing is appreciated.... I know it should be a simple fix but I have been at this for a couple of hours now I am tired and just getting frustrated by the fact that I can't seem to find the solution.

Thanks in advance

Acameron

Hi, you would be better posting in the security forum, more likely to get a response there.
I notice that you are using an outdated version of HJT, you need to get the latest version, follow this link here to download the latest version before re-posting in security.

Good luck

I am trying to clear some old personal computer hard drives and want to make sure the hard drives are definitely clean of my information before I give them away.

Does anyone recommend good software to do this? Do you have to pay or are any of the programs free?

I am fairly computer illiterate so any help would be grateful!
