Question: My Computer unusable, C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data viruses

SOMEBODY HELP ME!

hi. I'm new, and i have a big a$$ problem. Around 3 month a god i started getting the anoying and very well known, CiD: popups. I went to C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data, and found a file called slow gram, containing 3 executables. 2 were named "ajgft6usdabjasdvuyafd" or giberish. There was a program running called "barbroam" or "barboom" or somthing like that. i killed the folder. all was well for a while, And then one day, i couldn't go to my computer. I cliked on it, and got the stupid flash light searching for a file. I clicked on it for hours, so i left it there. I came back an hour later. Still the flash light. I ran Security Task Manager, and found a file running called BOLT DATE.exe in aplacation data. I quarentiend it and killed the prossces. I went to the folder and found a bunch of other folders that looked suspicous. NOTE: I AM WRITING THIS AS THE VIRUS IS DOING THINGS.

Preferred Solution: My Computer unusable, C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data viruses

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This has been bugging me for a while it pops up whenever I start the computer. I don't know to much about how to do things so please have some patients with me. If you can help me than I might just love you forever.

Answer:Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\ Network Service\ Local Settings\ Application Data\ hrcopul.dll

Have you run any scans for infections? I Googled hrcopul.dll, and everything that I found points to a infection.

Hi,

First time posting.

I ran combofix.exe a few weeks ago before I knew of the help available via these forums. When I ran the program the following files were detected and deleted:

c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\inst.exe
c:\windows\system32\Ijl11.dll

I do nightly scans using AVG Free 8.5 and Spybot Search and Destroy (both up-to-date). Nothing was detected in either scan last night.

I ran combofix.exe again tonight and the following was detected and deleted:

c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\inst.exe

Now that I realized there is a lot of help available on these forums, I'm here looking for some guidance.

I do have a combofix log file that was produced after the second combofix scan and I'd be more than happy to post it here, but I will wait for further instruction first.

My main concern is why inst.exe is showing up a second time.

Thank-you for any help you can provide.

Answer:inst.exe found in c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\

I also ran a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Quick Scan after the combofix completed.

No infections were detected.

Answer:Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\update\flacor.d

Re: Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\update\flac

You have skipped many steps of the Read and Run Me first procedures. You will need to refer to the below running what you did not before, and then once completed, run MGTools.exe again and attach the zip file it creates along with the other requested logs.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ &a... Read more

Hello, I wanted to see what are the Lenovo settings that we can alter by going to the Lenovo icon on the Metro view of my Lenovo Thinkpad S1 Yoga, but every time I try to go there (I've rebooted 3 times already) I get the message to either share usage statistics or not, and none of the buttons are clickable (I've tried the mouse, touchscreen, tabulation)... the Lenovo screen just closes after a few seconds and the application exits, so I cannot use those settings. I downloaded a package I saw here for 'SettingsDependency', but that didn't make any difference either. Any idea, what the problem could be? or maybe how could I disable that initial question about the usage statistics to see if I could get to the app and start using it? Thank you.

Answer:Lenovo Settings unusable on Metro view, application crashes

And I was thinking, could I manually create an entry in my registry to say that I've already selected to either allow or disallow my usage statistics to be sent to Lenovo? Any idea of the parameter and value that I should create in the registry? This is what I currently see...

Hi, I’m Spencer and I just joined the forum.

My question regards one of the practices of a local computer repair shop where I am currently interning... This practice is just one of a handful of procedures that is known as our “Performance Tune-Up”. It involves checking the size of the Documents and Settings folder, if this folder is above say four or five gigabytes the source of the reported data is to be found and moved to another folder on the root C:\ drive (a shortcut is then placed on the desktop so the user may access their data).

When I asked the owner of the shop why this was part of our performance tune-up, he explained to me that Windows XP scans the Documents and Settings folder on startup. If there is a large amount of data in this folder, it will slow the startup time. He later remarked that he knows this must be the case because he has witnessed computers with heavy amounts of data on the desktop slow the startup times.

This seemed perfectly logical to me, but I was curious and somewhat skeptical about his statements. After spending a couple hours researching this on the internet, I haven’t been able to come up with a definite answer as to whether large amounts of data in the Documents and Settings folder affect startup time. Could someone please help me out on this? I’m mostly wondering for my own computers sake, but also for the shop, in the event that my boss is wrong and we’re performing useless tasks.

Although, I haven’t found an answer, I am do... Read more

Today I began to suspect I had some serious viruses/spyware on my computer. Whatever it was, it wasn't allowing me to run any virus scans. So I restarted my computer in safe mode and was able to run a complete scan with SuperAntiSpyware. After removing about 50 things, it asked me to reboot my computer.

Upon rebooting the computer, I received a message that Data Execution Prevention had prevented the Userinit Logon Application, and after I closed that message, I was faced with just a black screen. I wasn't able to find any way to load Windows Explorer or anything else.

I have tried rebooting in both Safe Mode and in Directory Services Restore mode but in both cases, I'm told that windows failed to start.

With my other computer I downloaded PC Regedit and burnt it to a CD, and booted my computer from that disc. I was able to check the registry entry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit\C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, and it appeared to be present and valid.

I don't know what else to do... I've reached the limit of my own knowledge. Please, can someone suggest a fix for this other than reformatting my computer?

Answer:Removed viruses and now Data Execution Protection blocks Userinit Logon Application!

If you cannot bootup normally, cannot transfer required tools to the infected machine and cannot download anything while in safe mode, then your options are limited to what security tools you have on your computer. If those tools do not work, then your options become even more limited.Have you tried using System Restore from a command prompt in Safe Mode to return to a previous state before your problems began? If that doesn't work. these are links to Anti-virus vendors that offer free LiveCD or Rescue CD utilities that are used to boot from for repair of unbootable and damaged systems, rescue data, scan the system for virus infections. I am looking for a way to copy files to a local domain users Application Data folder either through a self extracting file, batch file or even logon script. I need to install Stationery for MS Outlook to about 100+ users desktops and instead of pullign the stationery from "c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\stationery" they pull it from a file in thier documents and settigns folder...

I can craete a self extractign exe but that would only be useful if it had to go to the same directory on each and every machine

Answer:How to copy files to local users \documents and setting\user\application data folder?

Put the stuff you need to be copied down to the client system in \\someserver\someshare\somedirectory and add something like this to the login script?

Code:

if not exist "%APPDATA%\somedirectory\somefile" xcopy /s/e "\\someserver\someshare\somedirectory" "%APPDATA%\somedirectory\"

Hello, I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data.

My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives).

My query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.

I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily).

I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list.

Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?

Thanks.

Answer:Application data/settings backup

If you need to backup Photoshop, you need to find it's directory (probably under Adobe), and for Word it's probably under Microsoft or Office. Another option is to simply backup the entire AppData folder, that way you can't miss anything.

If you're talking about a large-scale backup for your whole system, you will probably want to backup drivers as well (you only need to back these up once, all the drivers are installed in C:\swsetup, but I prefer just saving the installer files).

I reinstalled my OS multiple times, with my personal data on another drive. What I backed up from my C drive was:

Select folders from AppData (only for programs' settings that I wanted to backup)Fonts that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Fonts)Themes that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Resources\Themes)Custom Power Plans (exported/imported through powercfg.exe in command prompt)Start Menu folder, for lots of links I created (AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Private Profile, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Public Profile)Certain folders in Program Files of older programs that I run as Administrator for compatibility purposes (programs that need Administrator privileges to save stuff in Program Files)I did not backup the registry in anyway, because the registry changes I made were saved as .reg files. Other registry changes are made while installing programs (which after a clean install will be done anyway)
What you think is vital to backup depends on your s... Read more

Any quick and safe way to do this please?

When I try it says its a Windows file and cannot be re named

Booted back in to my regular account and renamed the new account in users and documents and settings. Booted back out and logged onto that new changed account without a problem. Worked for me!

I have a problem with a computer. When I log on, the desktop is blank, only the shortcuts that where created for all users are visible. But every custom shortcut is gone.

When I go into c:\Documents and Settings I see my user name "user" as well as another folder called "user.mycoimputername". And I happen to now log in as "user.mycomputername". But why is that? And how do I log in with the other user setting folder, I clearly see it in the Documents and Settings folder.

A while back I believe I knew of the solution, but I cannot remember how to fix it.

If anyone could help that would be great!
Thanks!

Hi, if anyone could help me with this, it would be great!

All of a sudden when I try to open my C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder, it says "access denied"

running xp home sp2.

any suggestions?

oh, I did a google for solutions and various pages often suggested I turn off simple file sharing, but the option is non existant under my file/view menu...

Answer:Access Denied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

It sounds to me as though the administrator has made that directory path private. Are you the admin, and if so, are you logged into a user account with admin rights? If all else fails, reboot and log into the Administrator account and go to the control panel/users and change your preferred account status. While you're there, unlock the problem path to allow all users to view.

Good Luck!

Hi all,

I've built another new PC, but for the first time I've installed a SSD to hold Win7 while all my data (in theory) will be held on my data drive (2 TB Hard Disk).

I've redirected most of my user folders just fine, "My Documents", My Music, Downloads etc. however when I installed my first game on this system, it's placing its saved games into "Documents"; note: NOT "My Documents".

Of course all my google searches throw back results for redirecting "My Documents" which is already done...

So is the "Documents" folder stuck in my user folder permanantly? Over the course of a year I don't doubt it will get very bloated with saved games, screenshots etc. so I really don't want it on my SSD drive and want to nip this problem in the bud if possible.

Basically is this possible to "fix" without relocating the entire "Users" folder?
p.s. Out of interest, I tried creating a "Documents" folder on my F: drive (my data disk) and it said that it already existed as "MY Documents"...Annoying

Answer:Documents vs. My Documents - Relocating folders off c: to data drive

Navigate to the start menu, Right click on Documents and assign a new location, By doing so, If your external HDD fails you will lose all your data.

Hi Everyone,Sorry if this is a basic question(s), but wanted some advie re following. I have brought a new comp as current one seems to be dying. How can I do the following.1. I want to use Microsoft Outlook for e mail on new comp. Where is the relevant folder stored that I need to copy across from my old to new computer re all my e mails and addresses? Can I install Outlook on my new machine (I have disk) and somehow copy a folder into system from old machine which will replicate my current e mails/contacts2. How do I copy my favourites and desktop short cuts across? Can simply copy the folders onto a CD and then paste on new computer.3. I have songs on itunes. I will install itunes on new machine but how do I move my current music across to new computer.Any advice appreciated. Will check for replies tomorrow eveningMany thanksAmer

Answer:How to move data/settings to a new computer

What exactly do you mean by 'I have brought a new comp as current one seems to be dying'. It might be possible just to 'revive' your existing pc if you supplied more details as to its imminent demise.I think Microsoft Outlook is installed by default - to keep existing contact details use your import / export function to save and carry across to a new installation. Same with your favourites - use the save copy import / export function to copy across any favourites you want to retain or just copy them to a removeable media such as a memory stick or floppy disk. Again as far as I know back up iTunes media to a cd or dvd and just copy them across. As I don't use iTunes stuff maybe someone else can expand on how you need to do this. But as I said, first establish why exactly you want to kill of your existing machine a sit may be possible to salvage it.

Bought a new hard drive at fry's to replace a smaller working drive. "Travelstar 7.5 to 20 gb". Had fry's do a data transfer from drive to drive. with the new hard drive in the lap top, (hp omni book 500) boot up stops with "cannot find os". The bios setting for the hard drive are auto detect, but it shows a 7.5gb drive. The bios is a current update. I have tried to boot with a win 98 disk to format the drive, no luck. I also tried to re-install win xp, but get "looking for prtmngr (partition manager) file. The data is on the drive, but i cannot access it. I cant format with win 98 because ntsf file format from xp on the drive from the data transfer. I just want to format the drive and get the laptop to see the larger drive.

I am running Windows 7 on my notebook, as the owner and admin.....
I try to access this folder, and I cannot...in fact it appears as a shortcut rather than a folder...i have run antivirus, and malware, found nothing....
tried to change the security....all users has rights to it, the admin does not and cannot be changed....any ideas?

Answer:C:\Documents and Settings\all users\documents DENIED!!!

It looks like one of the junction points that provides some backwards compatibility and which shows when unhiding files in Control Panel>Folder Options>View. There is no Documents and Settings folder in Win7, except as a junction point.

Read more about junction points here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...=vs.85%29.aspx

In Win7 Documents is under All Users>[User Name]>Documents. Perhaps you should hide Hidden and System Files again to see only the WIn7 folders you need.

We are getting the above error randomly on some of the laptops we have deployed. The error comes right after you boot or when the windows 7 is left running. There are no special software running. The error in details is below.
"The boot configuration Data (BCD) settings for the following boot application have changed since Bitlocker was enabled
boot appplication: \windows\system32\winload.exe
change settings: 0x26000090
You must supply a bitlocker recovery key to start this system.
Confirm that the changes to the BCD settings are trusted.

If the changes are trusted then suspend and resume bitlocker. This will reset bitlocker to use the new BCD settings.
Otherwise restore the original BCD settings"

Can anyone please explain on how to correct this error. As before this is happening on few of the machines and we are seeing more as we go. Any tips would be nice...Thanks

Hello Win 7 forums! I recently get my new computer, as my old one was as shitty as hell. I was hoping to transfer my winRAR data/settings (I failed to find a winRAR forum, don't think there is one) By data i mean like the archive configurations, as i would make several sfx archives for people (see Easy Servers (Bukkit)(Instructions)(Plugins)(No-WARNING&#33 - Minecraft Forum - Page 2 for my work) I mean the little drop-down-box which has default and anything you add in there, i added a quite a few entries and would appreciate having the data moved over rather then me re-typing everything. Anyone who can help with this would be a big help, and would help my project grow!

Answer:Got new computer, hoping to move over winRAR data/settings

You could try typing
%appdata%
In the start bar search box and see if any folders located there look like they belong to winrar.
Programs very often keep their settings in that location.
It's not a place you want to be messing around in though, so just copy the folder and get back out.

There is a winrar folder there on my system but it is empty.
I don't actually use winrar though I use universal extractor that just has some elements of winrar.

It sounds like you`ve re-installed the system from CD over the top of an existing system, giving you a fresh `Dave`. Have you recently run a repair or indeed, done a clean install ?

As a work-around, can you take the documents & favourites from the old `Dave` and put them in the new `Dave` so at least you`re back up and running again.

Hi all, this is my first thread here. May be a little n00bish but here goes.

Ive dealt with almost every problem Ive had with my comp but this one has me stumped. I just tried to install a program and cant because the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder denies me access. I have administrator rights and all that guff and it annoys me horribly the thought I dont have access everywhere on my computer. Ive been though the folder properties and attributes, and cant change much at all. I dont ever remember not having access to this folder before.

Please help...

Answer:C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

The software I am trying to install is genuine. Bought it today. Is a game called fear. What its trying to do is create a profile folder in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder I believe but cant because of this access problem.

My girlfriend logs on with her user name (Mary) at the XP Pro welcome screen. Hers is the only user name shown. In Control Panel/Windows Accounts she is listed as the only user.

In Windows Explorer (C:/Documents and Settings) there are four folders:

1. All Users
2. Config.msi (empty)
3. Default User
4. Ex-husband?s name (it used to be his computer, so somehow he is still around)

All the user data of my girlfriend is actually saved in folder four. Also:

a) At the top of the Windows Explorer tree the ?My Documents folder? points to Ex-husband?s ?My Documents? folder.

b) Later in the tree there is another folder called ?Mary?s Documents? which also points to Ex-husband?s ?My Documents? folder and contains the same files.

So my questions are:

1. Can I safely change folder four to my girlfriend's name? Should/can this be done in Windows Explorer, or somewhere else?

2. Can/should I delete the folder called ?Mary?s Documents? which simply reproduces the files in Ex-husband?s ?My Documents?.

3. Can I safely delete the folders ?All Users? and ?Default User?, which do not contain my girlfriend?s user data?

4. Can I safely delete the empty ?Config.msi? folder?

5. I would like to keep the ?My Documents? folder which shows at the top of the folder tree as it is convenient for my girlfriend to find.

I hope this makes sense. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Swish

Answer:'Documents and Settings' and 'My Documents' query

1) I wouldn't, but it can probably be done...it's hard to redirect those stupid Windows links. You could create your own shortcut to "Mary's Documents", copy the contents of the ex-husband's folder to the Mary's documents, then you should be able to delete it.

2) For safety's sake I wouldn't, but you could give it a shot... (or do what I said above)

3)No, they are default folders that WIndows uses for some mysterious purposes.

4)Definitely not!

5)Go to theeldergeek.com to find a registry hack which will let you delete the My Documents folders. Then add the new shortcut above.

Remember, if you delete something you shouldn't have, you can restore it from the recycling bin!:grinthumb

I logged into Windows and found that all of my user settings had been changed back to default. All the files that were in My Documents had been moved to Documents and Settings in C. I moved them back to My Documents and changed my settings back to the way I had them before. While surfing the internet a few minutes later, the system became unresponsive. I restarted the computer and logged in, but now I find that My Documents has completely disappeared. I can't even find my files in Documents and Settings. I had about 35 GB of music, so I hope I didn't just lose it all. Please help!

question... i seem to have a bunch of crap in this folder that always brings the trojan in and hides it with files that have come from popups... can i delete everything in this folder and not cause problems for my computer

Answer:C:\Documents and Settings\-------\Local Settings\Temp

Hi futrade

Yes, you can delete everything in the Temp folder.

The best time to empty the Temp folder is right after a reboot, some programs place files in the Temp folder and will deny the deletion since the file is currently being used.

If you want, you can send the items to the Recycle Bin for a few days, if something seems to be running differently after emptying the Temp folder, you can restore the items from the Recycle Bin.

If any of the files in the Temp folder is a virus or trojan, obviously, you would not to keep those hanging around, so run a couple virus scans, links below.

To help clean up your system:
Run an online Anti-Virus scan from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites

Trendmicro HouseCall
PandaActiveScan
SymantecSecurityScan
RavAntiVirusScanOnline
Allow them to clean/delete any spyware/malware or viruses/trojans they may find.
Make a note of any files flagged that were unable to be cleaned or deleted.

Download, Install and check each of the following Spyware tools for updates:
(If you already have the following, please make sure it is the latest version and has been updated)
Ad-Aware SE 1.06:

I have a drive that had Vista Home Premium on it & NTFS as the file system. The drive went bad with over 100 K bad sectors. Preformed a hard drive recovery; After several days I managed to remap all the bad sectors so that I could read the drive when booting from a XP boot CD or a UBCD cd.

Now When I view the drives directory structure I can browse most of what is listed except for the Documents & Settings folder. When I try that one I get the message "Access Denied". I tried getting into the properties to see if I can change the properties but the Security tab did not show up.

I am a lot more familiar with XP than Vista. Is there an added security feature Vista has on the Documents & Setting folder that only Vista can open it. I tried using a Vista Recovery disk but it was not able to see the partition. Also I am not sure if there are any tools on the disk to recover files from a drive that no longer boots windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
/Peter

Answer:Security Settings for Documents and Settings Folder

"Access Denied" is a proper and routine message encountered...when moving a hard drive from one system to another. Only impacts the Docs & Settings files/folders, all other files can be easily accessed. So can the Docs & Settings folders, by taking ownership of the files/folders.Taking Ownership in VistaLouis

In windows XP how do i access documents and settings/owner/local settings? When I run malwarebytes it goes into this folder and is there for ever. I would like to acces this and delete what is in there but I do not know how to get there.
Any help would be appriciated.

Answer:documents and settings/owner/local settings

Follow these steps!!
1. Go to my computer
2. Click on "Tools"
3. Go to "Folder options"
4. Go to "View"
5. Then click on the "Show hidden files and folders" Tab

Then you can go to the Documents and Settings/Owner/Local settings.

I am sure you will succeed but make sure you follow the first 5 steps after everything so that you can hide the files again. Some system files need to be kept hidden to avoid being removed or deleted accidentally

Ok, running windows xp home on a peer to peer network. Have done avast antivirus and ad aware scans.

Friday my computer locked up (dang farmville!). I got impatient and did a hard reboot (holding the power button down). Quickbooks also was open.

When it rebooted it did the blue screen Stack rebuild thing.

Now MS Outlook can't open the data files and the quickbooks data file also appears to have been corrupted.

An interesting thing - we have the carbonite internet backup service. Unfortunately, it seems to overwrite and not make any kind of incremental backups, so once it's backed up, that's the file you can restore. I was hoping to try to find a file that had been backed up in the morning, instead of right around the time I had the problem.

Anyway, when I browse to look at the user documents and settings folder on the BACKUP, it shows the application data and local settings folders, as normal. On the computer, those folders are now MISSING. I uploaded a screen shot on our website: http://www.domesticunity.com/tempfiles.html (sadly too big to attach)

Any idea of a simple way to fix this?

I looked online and Microsoft Outlook stores the data in personal.pst - that file also appears to be missing.

Thanks!

Answer:Blah! Application Data Folder Gone & Outlook Data won't open

Got it figured out.

Was able to restore a recent backup from the Carbonite service of my quickbooks file and only had to redo one day of entries.

Then did some more looking at Outlook threads on the net and first found out how to unhide hidden folders - the Application Data and Local Settings folders were hidden. Then found a thread about a scanpst.exe utility that repairs outlook data files.

Now it seems I'm back up and running!

Thanks for trying to help! Even tho no one had magic answers yet, I can see people cared and looked at my problems.

We are NOT alone! LOL

I am running Vista Home Basic. I first noticed this afternoon that my "Documents" folder was empty. I searched all locations and all I found was a shortcut to one of the missing files. It gave me the following error:

The item that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to remove the shortcut?

I did a system restore to the recommended restore point. On reboot some folders and files had appeared in "Documents" but many were still missing. I tried another system restore to an earlier date but upon reboot had a message stating the restore was not successfull and no files or settings had been changed.

I had a look for my "Documents and Settings" folder but couldn't find it.

I chose options to show hidden files and prtected system files. I turned of the sharing wizard option also.

I searched again for "Documents and Settings" and it appeared in the search window, on clicking I got the error:

Documents and Settings refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check that the disk is properly inserted and that you are connected to the internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

I have been having a long running problem with my computer. It started out as a lack of internet access which turned out tI o be a bad virus. I fixed that problem by doing a complete reformat of my system. I thought that that would fix the problem and it did for a bit.

After a week or so I started having BSOD. I went to a computer shop and we went to work on the issue. The BSOD's were showing that there was an error with my sata connection. I replaced the cables. The problem kept happening, so I replaced the motherboard and hard drive with a complete reformat again. Then I continued to have the same issues which included crashes, disappearing icons, weird error messages (x86 errors) and once in a while a BSOD. The BSOD's all say there's still an error with the sata connection.

I then decided to replace the power supply and upgraded to an evga 1300 watt. I replaced my case as well to a bigger one. I even replaced the ram sticks That seemed to fix the problems for a while and the BSOD's became very rare, but after a lot of use the weird error messages became very common. I really can't use the computer any more. I'm typing this on my laptop.

The computer shop I go to say's this is probably a hardware issue. They can't seem to figure it out. I've had it in multiple times. This is a nightmare for a computer owner. I have replaced virtually all the parts and my computer is still utterly unusable. The only program I installed since the last reformat wa... Read more

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. In the hidden folder "All Users" is a folder named "Application Data". Inside it is a folder named "Application Data". Inside that is yet another folder named "Application Data". This nonsense repeats itself to a depth of 16 folders, all named "Application Data". I cannot remove them. Windows tells me that I have to have permission from myself.

Norton 360 finds no risks or suspicious files on my computer.

Has anyone else had this idiotic problem? What causes it? More importantly, how do I get rid of that "All Users" directory tree altogether? I am the only user on my computer, so I don't need templates or anything else like that.

Thank you in advance for your helpful responses.

Richard

Answer:Application Data folder inside Application Data folder

Never seen that before!! judging by the lack of response sounds like its a new one!

It does definatly sound virus related in some way.

Malwarebytes in Safemode would find anything there, but wont undo the damaged caused assuming it is a virus of course. The folders would still be there!!

Suppose only way to fully sort that would be a refresh/reset.

Refresh - Maybe
Reset - Defo!

I don't know who Kenny Hartwick is, but deleting temp files is NOT a problem. Just get his permission, willya.

So in Windows 7, whatever applications you have pinned to the start menu sometimes have a triangle facing out, and if you click on that triangle, it will show the recent documents you've worked with that application. As the title says, there is one application that just won't show the list no matter how many times I click on the triangle. However, other applications DO show that list. How is it that only one application is causing trouble while others aren't?

My computer is 2 years old and has been connected to the internet for that entire time. I didn't have any antivirus/antispyware/antiadware software installed on my computer and security warning never went off until my brother downloaded some codecs from download.com, the website claims that their software is spyware free, but it's obviously not, becasue those codecs were what infected my computer...something by the name of Zlob? So I install Kasperski antivirus, after an hour of deep search it only found one file and so I deleted it. Then I uninstall it and install AVG antivirus, this program doesn't find anything, I uninstall it and install AdWare, it finds about 18 files and deletes them (the exclamation triangle blinker - that was going off and saying I have adware on my computer goes off after running Adware). After all this the shield icon is still blinking from an X to a ? saying I still have viruses. I install and run avast!, it finds 18 infected files but for some reason cannot remove them or repair them. Most of them are trojans, a few of them are in my Java folder, a few came in with codecs, then I find this DriveCleaner Free that I have never seen before. I uninstall DriveCleaner, restart, run antivirus scan again, it finds a few infected files that are the leftovers of DriveCleaner. After all this my security warning is still blinking, so I decide to do a Sys. Restore in Safe mode. I pick a date and try restoring, but for some reason it ... Read more

My brother has been having this annoying problems with his computer. It started this last semester, but got progressively worse until this point. I've tried searching the forums, yet didn't find anything specifically for this problem. I'll get started:

Basically, his computer restarts on its own, quite often. It'd do it every now and then during the semester, but now it's to the point where his PC isn't even usable really. It will run for a while, then will shut down randomly. Often, it won't even get through booting windows and will repeatedly restart while the computer's trying to reload. The only way it will turn on again is if he leaves it turned off for a while. Also, every time he is able to finally start up his computer (maybe 1 in 8 tries) it gives him an error message that says "cli.exe application error 0xc0000135 . application failed to initialize properly".

Now here is what I do know:

He's almost positive the problem is related to his graphics card, Radeon 9800 PRO. He's reinstalled the driver semi-recently, but this problem is making it very difficult to reinstall again. We're still trying that primarily though. Personally, I think his graphics card is getting too hot for whatever reason and making his computer restart. It'd make sense too that when he leaves it off for a while, it's cooling down, allowing him SOME time to work before the process again repeats itself.

Additionally, he's trying to reformat for all the overall i... Read more

Answer:Computer = unusable

I doubt it's the graphics card. I would say either the CPU is overheating (blow dust out of it, ensure the fan is working properly), or the power supply is dying.

In fact, I (and tons others) have experienced the same symptoms from a bad power supply. My computer re-booted itself and forced me to re-install windows countless times between March and August, due to a faulty, cheap power supply that came with my case.

Hey guys my girlfriend bought a computer about a year ago and it's a pretty decent machine, until her older brother decided it was "his" responsibility.

So he password protected it and nothing can be installed or updated and now the computer is very slow and freezes when you open pictures. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I thought about just resetting the password but I don't want her brother to get all mad at her and take it away.

Would it be wise to dual boot another OS on it? She just wants music, photos and the internet so any Linux distro should work.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

btw she might get a laptop but we don't know when so this will be temporary :]

Edit**
Unbuntu looks really attractive and easy for her to get the hang of, is dual booting an option? Can I use GParted and partition the hard drive?

Thank you Computer Newbie I think I'm going to try it out (just DL'd Unbuntu)

Any more suggestion are appreciated as well

so, me being a complete idiot decided to go months without scanning for viruses.
scanned today after noticing my computer being exceptionally slow, and multiple programs being corrupted or the files missing.
there were 13 malicious items, and 5 nonmalicious items (they were all PUPs)
there were 3 that stood out the most of the 13 malicious ones (most were stolen.data files and malware.traces)

backdoor.agent.dcrsagen
virtool.vbinder
backdoor.bot

I did research on each of these. after panicking a little about all the super private information.. heh i have on my laptop, i attempted to remove them with my AV.
this seemed to have fixed many of the problems i was having, such as slowness, certain programs not running, and random crashing. however, the main #1 thing i use my computer for is skype.
skype had been acting up, giving me errors before i removed the viruses. after multiple restarts whcih took 10 minutes each, i got it working.
after cleaning out the viruses, i restarted my computer per instruction. when i got back on, it all seemed normal. until i tried to start skype.
each and every time i open skype, type in my username, and sign in, it'll say "signing in..." and then just stop, and kick me to the sign in page.
theres absolutely NO error message. ill keep trying, same thing. ill restart skype, same thing. nothing works. tried different accounts, those do the same thing.
i desperately need to get back into skype.

at this point, im not su... Read more

It is almost unusable at this point, but it should be very fast, I cant even run my norton antivirus, or any programs from here now. It is a 3.1GHZ 5i processor with 8GB of RAM. I dont know why it has gotten so slow, and why I cant even run any programs to try to fix it, they download to my computer, but the programs do not run, I save then click open and nothing happens....

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual update Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account... Read more

I apologize in advance if there was a step I missed before posting, but I am really stuck with something nasty. I have the blue screen and something called "System Security Version 4.52" running that seems to be hijacking the whole system. I can't run anything in the normal mode and I can't run combofix, malwarebytes, or sas in safe mode. I'm really concerned because I have lots of written work on there and at this point I can't even save anything if I was going to reformat. I would really appreciate any kind of advice or suggestions for my next step, thanks.

Not meant as a bump but I was able to find a solution and I wanted to post it for the record. Went in to folder options and "unhid" all folders then found that "system security" thing in there, deleted it, and now I've at least got basic functions back and working normally. Thanks for this info resource and hope this helps anyone else with this problem.

Hi!

As of late, my computer has been acting up. It has been extremely slow on startup and will not run certain programs without crashing. (For example, Photoshop worked until about a week ago. Now it just crashes and freezes the computer)
In addition, I'm getting weird "Bluetooth" popups that do not look official by any means. (Misspellings, poor grammar, etc.)

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Not true. ComboFix works fine with your OS. Try it again in safe boot mode.

Are you filtering anything from being displayed with HijackThis? Your log looks way too small which would indicate you are filtering information which you must not do or we will not be able to fix your problems.

First please run this Resetting Registry and File Permissions Make sure you reboot as requested.

So i have been having BSOD issues for about a month or so, i cant even count how many clean installations and fixes i tried. this was my original post
https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/67629-windows-freezes-require-hard-reset.html
In the end i thought maybe it is windows 10 fault so i just installed fresh 8.1 but again BSOD started after a while.
So far what i gathered:
If i just use windows for browsing and not intense apps i encounter no BSOD
When i launch graphically intense games they always crash during loading or after ruining for a short of time causing BSOD which i will show at the end of post.
I cant seem to update my Direct x runtime driver, when i do it says its updated but nothing happens, for example when i launch steam game and it installs it next time i launch that game it will install DX again.
I tried using older drivers but the result was the same so it is not a driver issue or at least not the one solved by it.
I get watchdog violation BSOD that is always caused by hal.dll i tried multiple fixes from forums but none have worked.
the other BSOD i get is when launching games and it is system thread exception not handled , now it will happen after any game that i launch.
I have all updates + additional ones.
when i did last updates for my 8.1 i got that driver BSOD

I start to think that it is probably my hardware, but if you have any other ideas please share.
p.s. i still have warranty.

Just upgraded from 8.1 to 10. Everything seemed to go alright until I logged in and the computer went to the desktop. At that point the desktop would continually flash with the icons intermittantly appearing and disappearing. I am able to get into task manager. Under the processes tab it shows 2 processes using a large amount of processing time: Host Process for Setting Syncro.... and Antimalware Service Executable. Under the performance tab The CPU was running between 50 to 100 percent with the processes using the most being SettingSyncHost.exe and MsMpEng.exe. HELP!!!!

My computer has suddenly gone from running fine to running so slowly it is unusable. I suspect that I'm infected with something but I haven't had any luck trying to find out what it is.

I can boot to Safe Mode and the machine runs fine. From there I ran ComboFix a couple times but that didn't help. I can post the log file if needed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I downloaded and ran MalwareBytes (in SafeMode) but it came back clean.

I now have the machine up and running in normal mode but it is still extremely slow. When I try to open any application from the Start menu, it doesn't load at all. I am however able to run Task Manager and I can see all the processes that are running. I've sorted the list by Memory Usage and run some searches on the processes that are using the most but nothing has turned out to be a virus.

I suspected that my problem was with Comodo, but I was able to shut that down and the problem persists. However I have noticed that cmdagent.exe is still running.

Any suggestions?

When browsing a site, I accidentally agreed to download a file called "MediaTubeCodec" via an activeX popup on my screen. As it was downloading I went to click "cancel" in the "downloads" window, but right as I did the download finished and "cancel" turned to "open". The program insalled itself and dissapeared. I was hoping it was nothing, but shortly after I started recieving those dreaded pop-ups advertising a fake virus-protection program called System Defender. I was then notified that my "automatic updates" for Windows security stuff had been turned off.

I was looking at my McAfee options and wondering why McAfee hadn't caught anything when my desktop flickered, my icons re-arranged themselves and my wallpaper was replaced with a red background with a large bloody biohazard sign and the words, "Download privacy protection software now". To make things worse, the background is somehow a giant button, so if I click ANYWHERE on my desktop, IE pops up and takes me to the fake-virus protection site. My clock has been replaced with a thing that says "VIRUS ALERT".

I decided not to wait around for McAfee to do a full scan and went to do a System Restore, but the control panel, show-all programs tab, My Computer, and many other components of the start menu are missing. Hitting ctrl+alt+del gives me a message that says "the task manager has been disabled by the administrator".

Answer:MediaTubeCodec- now computer is almost unusable

Please, I really need help.

I managed to get rid of the background button (there was an invisible "x" button at the top right) but I still cannot access the task manager, my computer and so many other things.

Hi
I reinstalled my OS (vista) after deleting lots of stuff accidentally. I have done my updates of Vista as required and installed programmes like Adobe, Quicktime, Open Office etc to use on the laptop. Also saved my documents and pics etc. However for the past week the laptop has slowed down so badly its worse than using dial up and even using applications that ar not connected to internet eg playing dvd, it keeps freezing up and whn it works chnging between programmes is so slow and things keep crashing. Volume mixer wont open for me to adjust volume among other things. When i try to run Secunia it stays stuck at 5% for hours on end

I have installed and uninstalled various anti malware software to try and establish the cause and only a low level threat was detected. I have tried the following

Avast
Antimalwarebytes
Microsoft essentials
Defender
Please help, i am desperate. Watching youtube vids now impossible on the machine

Answer:Computer infected and almost unusable

Do you still have avast and Microsoft Security Essentials installed together? If so, you need to remove one of them as it is not advisable to run more than one anti-virus product due to various conflicts that can occur. Please post the complete results of your MBAM scan for review. To retrieve the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan log information, launch MBAM.Click the Logs Tab at the top.The log will be named by the date of scan in the following format: mbam-log-date(time).txt
-- If you have previously used MBAM, there may be several logs showing in the list.Click on the log name to highlight it.Go to the bottom and click on Open. The log should automatically open in notepad as a text file.Go to Edit and choose Select all.Go back to Edit and choose Copy or right-click on the highlighted text and choose Copy from there.Come back to this thread, click Add Reply, then right-click and choose Paste.Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.Logs are saved to the following locations:-- XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-yyyy-mm-dd-- Vista, Windows 7, 2008: C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-yyyy-mm-ddPlease download Kaspersky's TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to print out and fo... Hey,

My laptop went super slow and it takes over 10min for the laptop to switch on and ages to do anything. Somebody suggested it could be something with BBC iPlayer (Kservice component working in the background) but I have had this for months and all worked fine. When I stop the KService process, the laptop works a little faster but still not back to normal.

I am running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3. I have run Spybot to remove malware and it found nothing. AVG hasn't found anything either.

I am it my wits end and have no idea what to do. I will really appreciate some help. Thanks, Lili

Hi there,

After (actually before) some malware attacks and help from nasdaq in this thread, I got an issue in My Computer.
I can't see the "User's Documents" and "Shared Documents" under Files Stored on This Computer.
.
I looked into almost every solution given on the web and nothing seems to help.

- Windows is clean from malwares etc. See here.
- Tried these:
this workaround:

(actually the same:)

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Answer:No "User's Documents" and "Shared Documents" under My Computer

Probably (IMO) a case of damaged files.

I would try running the sfc /scannow command.

I am laptop user. About 2hr ago, i login to my lappy and discover that my profile is different. My folders on desktop went missing and some of the setting changed. Then i try on my own to solve it but to no avail. Fortunately i come upon my C:\Documents and Settings and discover that strange profile C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP and my original profile C:\Documents and Settings\p0716499 was still there. This imply that my previous setting and files are still in my laptop. However, I cant changed back to the original profile and struck with the temp profile.
Initially i suspect is registry problem so i DL "UPHClean Service" by miscosoft but to no avail. Now currently i suspect it might be the work of a virus. I need help. Thank anyone who help me in advance.

Hello - I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Dell with 384MB, 866MHz. My problem is I have multiple user accounts created. My own account is an administrator account. When I choose Start -> All Programs what shows does not reflect what's in my c:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Start Menu\Programs. Instead it appears to be using a combination of c:\Documents and Settings\All Users and c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

I've also noticed that my default "explore" starting folder is c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. This seems to be the only account affected by this.

Does anyone know how to re-point this all to c:\Documents and Settings\Mike...

Thanks

Answer:XP Pro Documents and Settings help

The user profile may have become corrupted, which can be deleted and Windows will automatically recreate it. To delete it depress the Windows key and click the Break key. Select the Advance tab and follow the menu options.

I have my own laptop but son and hub use the main desktop in our home. The harddrive, however, is just about full. So I've been looking around and see SO MUCH, what "I" would call junk .... but then again, I'm not sure. Compared to most of you here I"m sure I am a novice.

Anywho, I did a general search for *.gif and came up with 7,553 files !!!! Lots of these are under, for instance, Documents and Settings, default user, desktop, then TONS of files under there.

Also, to sign in on my computer there are 2 options ..... but under documents and settings, there are HP administrator, all users, default user, drag racer v3, administrator .... what are all these and are they necessary?

Sorry if these are stupid questions; am afraid to just start deleting !!

Answer:Documents & Settings

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It sounds as though loads of different user accounts have been set up on your computer.

Go into Start>Control Panel>User Accounts....... and see just how many accounts are on your hard drive. You'll then need to liaise with your menfolk to see which ones can be deleted.

On Windows 7, I can see a folder called users. It seems to be used as "user documents and settings" for previous Windows version. But can't find some folders such as "application data". By searching a lot on internet, they said there is appdata which point to "application data". but in my users folder, I can't find it.

You have to have "show hidden files" clicked in explorer and you will see it in your directory.
