Hijack This Check (Can't Update Windows, Check Email or access My Space)

Question: Hijack This Check (Can't Update Windows, Check Email or access My Space)

The problem start with my wife's PC. It started a few weeks ago she told me. She can't open Outlook Express (doesn't start), access My Space or get updates at Windows Update. Also some images on sites do not load.

I then checked my PC and found, I couldn't access Windows Update, My Space, Thunderbird fails to retrieve emails. I have not noticed any issues with images.

Given this sounded like some of the behaviors I have heard of trojans doing I thought I would post my logs here and see if anyone sees anything out of place. Normally I wouldn't consider a cross contamination but about two weeks I temporarily set up a home network between our PCs to share a few files. The next day I disabled NetBIOS on my PC but as we are both behind a hardware firewall, I guessing if it happened it must have happened then.

Nothing jumps out at me but I wanted to get a second opinion.

Any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Hijack This Check (Can't Update Windows, Check Email or access My Space)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hijack This Check (Can't Update Windows, Check Email or access My Space)

I ran SuperAntiSpyware and found nothing but 10 tracker cookies. Running Panda Virus Scanner online. I couldn't run F-Secure because IE7 Active X controls prevent it from running.

Zero clue as to what is going on so far.

Answer:Possable email hijack. please check my log

No signs of an infection here. What kind of emails did it send out and were they actually in your address book? Change your password and see if it still happens. Are you using a email client or web based email?

Can anybody please help me!!!

Answer:batch file to check hard drive space on an XP computer, and if there is enough space

I found this code on "SpiceWorks.com'.

I have not tested. I have not test (just to be clear). It's set up to determine % of free space (on a text file listing of servers) but could be modified to do what you want.

I have what I believe is a probably Hard Disk failiure; however, the Windows utility provides different output than the error codes provided by the System level check. The below is from my OS check:Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.C:\Users\user>wmicwmic:root\cli>diskdrive get statusStatusOKwmic:root\cli> It seems to indicate status as OK. Hello,

I recieve error C80003FA whenever I do a Windows Update run. It doesn't get past the stage of checking for updates.

I've tried several fixes including:
- Waiting 15 minutes and running Windows Update again.
- Letting Windows Update run on its own schedule.
- SFC /Scannow
- Renaming the Catroot2 Folder.
- Running 3 different Fixit tools.
- Clean windows install.

After each and every one of those fixes I've tried windows update and I still get error C80003FA.

SFC Scannow has previously said no errors, but the last run through it said there were unfixable errors. I've got the log, though for brevity's sake I will keep it until someone asks for it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Answer:Windows Update fails in Update Check. Error code C80003FA.

Clean windows install doesn't fix it? You must be blocked, maybe your firewall???

I get the Windows cannot access the , path, or file... on everything except my internet: Chrome, IE, and FF. literary everything else gives me this error, can't right click on start menu and open explorer, no "My computer" or control panel nothing in the start menu works.

The problem started with the "Google redirect" Virus and chrome not working at all so I removed the virus with ComboFix. Windows didn't restart properly so it needed to restore. Combo fix created that restore point. Now I'm here and I can't get anything but the internet working.

Tried download combofix again, the little green bar fills up than disappears than I get: "Windows command process has stopped working"

I tried creating another user, the new user profile wont load. I get a blank light blue screen.

My network connections has an X through it, but I'm online. My sound has an X as well, its not working. I get this same error if I try and run CMD.

Running windows 7 ultimate. All my start up programs work with out problem, Gmail notifier, norton, G15 keyboard stuffs, and a java updater. I can't manually update windows but it seems to do it on its own. Msconfig works but doesn't help.

So my copy of windows 10 is ready, and i want to update everything else beforehand. but i go into windows update, and when i hit "check for updates" it says checking, then returns an error code 80244019. i already tried running the windows update troubleshooter app from their website...no luck with that. it says fixed, but i still have the same issue.
i'm assuming this is the reason that when i click "lets continue" on the windows 10 update notification, its just says "working on it" for infinity.
i have not tried booting in safe mode yet, because the last time i tried that, something happened and i couldnt log back into windows and ended up having to bring it to the microsoft store and had to have them clean install windows.
any thoughts?

Hello Everyone:
I am unable to receive Windows updates. Even manual updates won't work. This seems to have started when I upgrade my Hard Drive to a Momentus xt 750GB (Hybrid Drive)

I combed the network and try all solution suggested. I reverted to drive images made at various time. No luck.

The first message when I click is Windows Update Checjk for update for your computer. Then Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer,

It doesn't appear to be a virus: Fresh installs won't clear the and my Norton has always been up to date. I even run Windows Malicious detector. Zero issues.

What I come to think of is a compatibility issue: 512b then, 4kb now? I know there has been a patch and I use routinely external HD of High capacity.

I would appreciate some help if you can. Again, I don't think it is a virus.

Help I'm having the same problem.

When I try to update my computer (Windows 7 64bit) I get an error message stating "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

And when I checked out the services the Windows Update service is COMPLETELY GONE! What do I do?

Hello Menanayo,

You could use the tutorial below to restore the Windows Update service. In addition, make sure that you have the Background Intelligent Transfer Service as well.Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7
Afterwards, see if you are able to run Windows Update. If not, then use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to reset and re-register Windows Update to see if you may be able to afterwards.Windows Update - Reset
Hope this helps,

Hello,

I just installed Win7 on my Asus K95VJ laptop and Windows Update is not working. I tried the troubleshooting from Microsoft "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates" error message when you try to install updates but without any luck.
If I select from that webpage to automatically fix my problem, I get the results from my Untitled2.jpg printscreen.
When I go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, the 3 services that are required for Windows Update to work appear with status Started, but not Running. See my Untitled.jpg printscreen. I tried restarting them without any luck.
I don't know what to do anymore and I don't understand why it's not working... please help me out.

Answer:Windows Update cannot currently check for updates...

Well, this is awkward, but I fixed it I found the solution somewhere else. I had to go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs and delete edb.log (it's a .txt file), then restart the computer. For I don't know what stupid reason, that edb file was corrupt and prevent Windows Update from running. Deleting it made Windows replace it with a brand new one and fixed my problem.

Sorry to be creating a thread on this, but this is important because it involves Windows Update.

My Windows 10 PC was just about to restart and complete the install of the newest Windows 10 Update, but I accidentally cancelled the restart. I then tried to restart it by pressing the grey box in Windows Update that says "Restart now" but it gave me an error.

Finally, I went to the Start menu and I pressed "Restart and install updates" and it then restarted itself.

How can I be sure it installed the update successfully?

Hi

I have recently been having problems with windows update and many other things. Basically it won't check for updates. When you click to check for updates, the bar starts but stays stuck searching. I then also notices microsoft security essentials does the same when u try and update. AVG free failed to install and I tried installing google chrome because I hate explorer and it also failed due to windows installer error. I tried manually installing service pack 2 from windows and it also failed. Nothing windows based will update.

I first noticed all this when I moved in with my girlfriend and started using her laptop. It is a decent laptop and the first thing I noticed it was a bit sluggish and I checked the CPU usage and one thing was hogging 70% all the time. It was windows error reporting or something similar which I disabled through systems, but nothing changed. Thats when I tried to update windows and it had 1 important update and 2 optional which I did. I remember one completed and 2 failed I think and after I restarted the computer the updater has not been working at all.

I got tune up utilities but it did not change anything after cleaning up various things. I also got rid one one malware thing from a free month trial with malwarebytes I think.

I have seen people talking about command prompts and cleaning registries but I cant get them to work properly.

I do not get errors report codes which is also a problem because its always frozen on checking for ... Read more

This morning i have downloaded some updates from Microsoft for windows XP SP1. most of them got on fine but when i installed a update, it asked me to restart my computer so i did. Upon restarting it only reached the Welcome bit and after that it should have loaded my desktop but it didn't. Instead a message said "A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the licence for this computer. Error code: 0x80004005. It unabled me to load into windows so i ran system recovery. It fixed the problem. The thing i want to know is, is this a rare or common problem. Are there any updates that cause the computer to respond like this and how will i know which ones do this. I thought that all microsoft windows updates were perfectly safe to install into the computer but after this update i don't know whether is should install any more. I'm afraid that it might permanently damage my PC. Any help?

Answer:Windows XP licence check after update

I doubt it is a hardware problem.More likely to be a software probelm as in the update excited a few files causing the message to appear...I would not worry about it."I thought that all microsoft windows updates were perfectly safe to install into the computer but after this update i don't know whether is should install any more."They are safe but as you have come to know one update caused you to post this message. Milllions of other people update without hassle. If you read very carefully what MS have to say about the updates. The trick is to find out if you really need a particuliar update. Then update or ignore the update."I'm afraid that it might permanently damage my PC. Any help?"No you will not permanently do anything...Just carry on as normal.

Today it dawned on me i had not seen any windows updates in quiet some time and also my AV Eset had not indicated updates were available either. When attempting to check updates via control panel it hung for quiet some time with a blue spinning circle the eventually took me to the check for updates screen which is red. After clicking the update button i received the dreaded notice"Windows cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running",after readiing up on the problem i have tried the various Microsoft fixes that state they have fixed various problems but still cant update,i have tried stopping the update service and deleting the software folder and restarting the update service but still nothing.
At a guess i think the last updates i did was the November ones which finished with a some updates failed to install properly.
I have also tried the downloads Brink has posted on the site but this has not resolved the problem so i guess its over to you guys/gals to try and help me fix this problem.

Hi allHow i check the actual file size of a windows update,i can seem to find all other details EXCEPT sizeI'm monitoring internet usage at my workplace and have noticed large file downloads on certain win7 PC' so i just want to check if windows update is responsible for this.would be great if i could somehow see the sizes and dates of all Win7 updatesthanks

Answer:how to check size of windows 7 update

I'm not sure if there is any way to determine the size of update files other than looking at what has been downloaded on a computer. However, if You have more than a few PCs by far the most efficient way to handle updates is to set up a Windows Update Server. This means that you limit update downloads to just one time, saving on your Internet costs, however many computers you are updating. It also allows you to review and test updates on a single computer before releasing them at large.

Answer:Windows Update - Cannot Check for Updates

Sounds like you have some corrupt Windows update components. By chance have you tried a System Restore? This may not correct your issue if there are corrupt components, but may be worth trying. Also if you have a System Repair Disk or OEM Windows Installation DVD. Both of these will repair any corrupt files.

Here's info on both:  http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html

Hi everyone,

Hope you guys won't mind helping me with this issue. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Edition.

I recently noticed that it's been 2 weeks since my laptop scheduled an auto installation of windows updates on Sundays so I decided to check if any new ones were available. When I clicked on Check For Updates, I received the following message:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

I restarted but nothing changed. I also went into the settings and selected never update, applied, then exited, then went back and re-selected auto update and install and applied but again, the same result.

I have no idea how to restart or reset the windows update so it will work.

I would really appreciate if you could please help me correct this problem.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to your replies.
Best regards!

BEFORE doing anything drastic such as resetting WU, try this -

Windows Update Settings - Change

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

I get this message when I check for updates....
"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"

The Check for Updates option in the Windows Update window, has a red shield with a cross in it, and I get the "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer" message when I click the Check for Updates button.

Coincidentally, Search Indexing is also not working.

I don't know when this all started, but it seems that it may have started when I did a system clone of my original system HDD using AOMEI Backupper Professional Edition 2.2

The new HDD (which is the clone) all works fine as far as I can see, except for the two issues.

I have tried various Microsoft Fixits, Cmd processes as well as SFC, and started services in Services (Local), all to no avail.

Hello,

I recently reinstall my windows x64 ultimate edition and after several installations (microsoft updates and some drivers on my own), it appears that microsoft update is failing.

When I look at the control panel/windows update windows there is no error code, juste the white cross with a red background indicating : "check for updates for your computer".

When I hit check for updates : "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer".

In services.msc the service is running.

the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) fail to install : error 0xc8000247
I run a SFC /SCANNOW directly on win7, the window close by itself.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Greetings All,

I am new here so please be patient.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 and for some reason as I am surfing the net with Internet Explorer it appears as if I lost connection. I will suddenly not be able to bring up any sites. Funny thing is I can still check my email without a problem. I check my IP address and it is correct. I am also unable to access my router and DSL modem. The only way I can fix the problem is to reboot the computer. Can someone please help?

Here is my system info:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
3 Gig of Ram DDR2 Single Channel
MSI MS-7309 Motherboard

Thanks for any help

I have 10 computers networked together with a Windows SBS11 server as a domain controller. Of the 10 computers 6 of them are Windows 7 Pro (64bit) and the other 4 are Windows Vista Pro (32bit). About a month ago all the Vista Computers stopped downloading updates and giving an error, "Windows can't check for updates" message. When you attempt to check for updates manually or automatically the error is displayed, however there isn't any issue with updates being downloaded and installed to the Windows 7 computers.

I've tried the following:
- Ran System Update Readiness Tool.
- Running Malware Bytes and Vipre Anti-Virus scans in Safemode. No infections found.
- Disabled Firewall and reran search.
- Reset proxy, using the netsh winhttp from the command prompt.
- Restarted Windows Update Services.
- Ensured that the BITS Service was running.
- Updated GPO to not Windows Updates to be configured on the computers.
- Changed settings in Windows Update to allow manually updating. Allowed for the updates to be installed, but after reboot computer reverted back to old settings and error appeared.

If there are any other suggestions I would be greatly appreciate them.

I'm a computer tech here in KS. I've been working on a customers laptop since I came in this morning, and this problem is driving me mad. In the past I've rendered good results from support at bleepingcomputers, and hope the same in this situation.

Basically, this customers laptop refuses to allow updates. Any microsoft KB article related to this problem I have done, and redone, as well as various suggestions on the net. I just recently tried reseting the update system, and BITS, with no luck because now when I try to re enable update and bits through cmd as administrator, I now get an access denied return.

Like I said, I've tried everything short of reinstalling (we make it a policy to stray from reformats or re-installs); I can't even do an upgrade in any timely fasion because as usual, the customer forgot to bring their disk while they are running vista x64, and I just have the 32 bit disk. I've heard repair via upgrade works, but that isn't an option.

So I need to get rid of the access is denied, and see if any of my efforts have paid off which I highly doubt.

Thanks in advance for any help!

When I click on windows update a box appears with a red shield and when I click on that another box opens that says: "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates, Because The Service Is Not Running. You may need to restart your computer."

I should point out that this happened after the following:
HDD failed, installed a new HDD - same spec and size.
I started the computer with the Windows7 Repair disk that I made up last year.
I reinstalled a system image that I saved 2 months ago.

Now I can't seem to update windows.
Is there a way to get a new windows 7 downloaded to my HDD I have my 25 digit code.

I would like to be able to use (ie- not loose) the data and programs that are in the system image.

Thanks for your help

Alright, I've checked the posting instructions, and let's get that out of the way.

1. Tried to install SURT, I get the following error;

Quote:
Installer encountered an error: 0x80070424
The specified service does not exist as an installed service

2. sfc /scannow
The verification was able to complete up to 58% at which it gave the error

Quote:
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation

3. No Windows Update error codes, it just says 'Check for updates for your computer' with a big red X icon

4. Log collection
I tried to attach the CBS.zip but it's 10mb, and this forum has an 8mb limit.

Okay, so I am reserving Windows 10 for the various computers at home, and when I try to update this computer which I use as an HTPC, I know I need update KB3035583 to get the option to reserve Windows 10, but when I go to do so, Windows Update tells me it can't check for updates because it's not running. I tried manually turning it on via an elevated command prompt but that doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

So after some digging and some relevant posts here, I was able to fix the problem.
I know people hate when people don't post what exactly fixed their problem so....

I used Option 3 in the Windows Update Reset thread located here

BUT now I get a new error,

Quote:
Windows could not search for new updates
Error Code 8024402F - Windows Update encountered an unknown error

after retrying, I get another error,

Quote:
Windows could not search for new updates
Error Code 80080005 - Windows Update encountered an unknown error

After running Microsoft's Fix It for Windows Update, I get the error

Quote:
Compressed (zipped) folders error
File not found or no read permission

With an OK button and I haven't found a way to run the Fix It as admin.

After Fix It completes, I get the following

Quote:
Some security settings are missing or have been changed - Not Fixed
Windows Update error 0x80070003(2015-07-28-T-04_12_51P) - Not Fixed
Problems installing recent updates - Not Fixed

Service registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed

with an 'Explore additional options' and some other buttons.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Someone... Please HELP! I did an automatic windows update last night. Now, my computer is so sluggish that I can't use it. (I'm a freelance digital designer) It is slow to load... but eventually does. And then, it creeps at openning programs. Now, when the computer is on, I get a Windows message: Virtual Memory Minimum is Too Low.

I cannot access the internet because AOL won't load properly. (I'm at a friend's computer right now) I am able to start in "Safe Mode" so I did and uninstalled the latest Windows update using "add/remove" but that didn't help. I also deleted the contents in the Temp Folder for all users and the Temporary Internet Files. I searched for f3initialsetup1.0.0.8.inf to delete it from my Downloaded Program Files but I didn't have it. I maintain my PC well. I use Norton Anit-Virus 2006 and update my definitions regularly. I disc defrag once every month.

Here is my hijack log. I'm desperate. I know I have a lot of programs running at startup. I'd like as little running as possible but I'm not sure what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recently inherited a laptop with an OEM Vista Home Premium 64 bit DVD, installed a new hard drive, added some memory, and went about setting up a system from scratch. I created two users, both administrators. Everything was fine until I noticed ACDSee 9.0 wasn't starting for one of the users, coincidentally the second one I created, while it worked fine for the first. I decided to see how up to date Vista was and couldn?t start Windows Update from either user. Windows Explorer opened, then it remained empty. I tried running both

We?re sorry, but Windows PowerShell failed to install. Please try again later.?

and with the second it processed, then I restarted the system and it let me check for updates, but then I immediately got a window with

?Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.?

When I check services, however, I see that the Windows Update service is started and its Startup Type is ?Automatic (Delayed Start)?. Nonetheless when I restart the computer the same thing happens, it says it can?t check for updates because the service isn?t running even though it is. I also ran sfc and found some corrupted files, but they had to do with uninstall functions, so nothing changed with updates. Can any... Read more

I have run the microsoft problem solver, also one that I found in this forum, I have installed and reinstalled W10 hundreds of times, but nothing fixes it, I have resorted to microsoft support and they do not give me answer. I am working a computer that has new install of Vista with SP2 but will not run windows update. All drivers are installed from Dell website. Norton 2013 is running and up to date.
The error I get is "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
I have tried stopping and starting BITS, Remote Procedure Call, Windows Updater then I tried removing the Software Distribution folder files; then stopping and starting Wuauserv in command line. Still does not work. Am at a loss.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

FYI. I ran ComboFix before realizing that I should wait until instructed to. I have it in my C: directory if it is of any help.

hi guys,

I accidentally shared a sensitive folder on a LAN network. Is there any way to check if anyone accessed my files in Windows Vista?

Your help will be appreciated

Answer:HELP! Accidentally shared my files in Windows - How to check access history

Pretty sure the answer is "no". No per-file log of "who accessed this file when" is enabled by default, and even if there was a list of people who enumerated the contents of the share that could be background scanning, automatic, or someone who looked but didn't read any files.

I've had this error on a few occasions and have managed to work round it by doing a rollback or using an Acronis backup but this time no luck. I have tried 3 times from different backups and each time I end up with the same error where Window Updates no longer works, all unfinished updates disappear from the list and when I turned the computer off it finished off many updates though there were a lot missing. To add to this every time I turn the computer on it downloads the same 10 updates and installs them when the computer is turned off, though they never show up in the Windows Updates panel.

I have tried using the following in an attempt to fix the problem:

Windows Action Centre - nothing suggested.

Microsoft Fixit (Online) - no success

Fixit Tool 50202 - no success

System Update Readiness Tool KB947821 - this fixed some error but not 8007370B

Disk Check - no errors (files or bad sectors)

sfc /scannow - I get the "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested action" message. I have tried running this from within Windows and from a command line, also from safe mode. Even tried the icacls command to revert file/folder permissions with no success.

The only other thing I can add it that I do not have a Windows 7 disc, only a recovery partition plus a Win7 service pack 1 disc. Unfortunately I purchased from Mesh just before they went into liquidation.

Answer:Request for Assistance - Windows Update Could Not Check for Updates

Hello madsent and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sometimes it's necessary to run SFC three or more times to fix problems. After running SFC at least 3 times and rebooting the computer after each scan, try the SURT again. (See Option Two, Step 4 note.)

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If still no joy you could try doing a Repair Install. If successful it will fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc.

Hello all,

Yesterday, Microsoft sent out a new batch of updates through Windows Update. However, I ran into issues when I tried to manually install the Update to Windows 7 file (KB2868116). Namely, the update seemingly hung on me; I left the update on for 20-30 minutes, but it never progressed beyond this file. I tried clicking the "stop installation" button, but nothing happened even after several minutes. Not knowing what to do, I forced a restart of my computer. I was able to boot to windows fine and was able to then manually install the other update files fine. Windows, so far, seems to be working ok; I can boot to it, run my programs/games, surf the internet, and shut down fine. Windows Update doesn't show the offending update as having installed, and the update still shows up as available, downloaded, and ready to install (I right clicked on the specific update, and "hid" it to prevent it from trying to install when I shut down). However, I'm still worried that I may have broken something when I restarted my computer.

My questions are, should I be worried that something is corrupted? If so, how do I check to see if the update corrupted anything and how do I fix it if I find something. Also, while I have the update hidden and am preventing it from installing, the actual download is still on my computer. Is the anyway to get rid of it?

Thank you.

Back in early December, i dropped my beloved 640XL down some stairs and shattered the screen. I was forced to go to back to using my 920 which I loaded with Windows 10 mobile (the 640XL is still loaded with 8.1). Right before Christmas I bought a replacement screen on eBay to fix the screen myself. In searching for a repair guide/video I stumbled upon this article:
An idiots guide: How not to repair your Lumia
article tl;dr if hardware doesn't register phone is basically bricked
I ended up successfully fixing the screen myself anyway because I simply missed the large screen real estate with the 640XL and just resigned myself to never updating to Windows 10 mobile from 8.1. But now I'm missing Windows 10 something fierce (even on the sluggish 920) and would like to update the 640XL - but I am terrified of ending up with a lemon for a phone. The above article is the only instance I've seen this talked about for Windows phone (I know the iPhone does something similar). Any one else know about this and if I can indeed update? If it's definitely impossible, I will, of course, forgo the update to keep a working phone but wanted to check my options first. Thanks for your time and assistance.

Hi everyone.

I have an HP Spectre x360 13-4193nr Signature Edition laptop.

Ever since I updated Windows 10 to the creators update a few weeks ago, my HP Spectre laptop at startup has a message that pops up asking to perform a chkdsk or press space bar within 8 seconds.

To be clear, when I startup my laptop, I see the HP logo, followed by the Windows 10 circle dots, immediately followed by the "chkdsk or press space bar within 8 seconds" which only appears for 1 to 2 seconds.

Any suggestions/recommendations on how to stop/get rid of this from appearing at startup?

Hey everyone. I recently did a factory reset on my computer and so I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Anyway, I have managed to get some updates from Windows Update installed but now I am trying to check for updates and it is taking forever for it to complete the process of checking for updates. It's been checking for updates for over an hour. I could really use some help in fixing this.

Hi, I have a problem. I installed 2 years ago Windows 10 on my Compaq Presario CQ57-430SL even if the upgrade icon didn't showed. The laptop and the OS are working well and now Microsoft released this new update, the creators update, saying that it could cause some issues if manually installed. Having installed Windows 10 manually, probably my drivers haven't been tested on this Windows version, so I may never receive automatically this upgrade. My question is: is there any way to check the drivers compatibility?Thank You

Windows, so far, seems to be working fine; I can boot to it, run my programs and shut down fine. Windows Update doesn't show the offending update as having installed, and the update still shows up as available, downloaded, and ready to install (I right clicked on the specific update, and "hid" it to prevent it from trying to install when I shut down). I also did NOT get any error messages. However, I'm still worried that I may have broken something when I restarted my computer.

My questions are, how worried should I be that something got corrupted? If I should be worried, how do I check to see if the update corrupted anything and how do I fix it if I find something. Also, while I have the update hidden and am preventing it from installing, the actual download is still on my computer. Is the anyway to get rid of it?

Thank you.

Answer:How do I check for Windows Update file installation corruption?

An update that is not installed will affect your computer - and is best left alone, since there are interdependencies in the downloads.
If/when MS revise the update, it will reappear in the offered list, and whichever files are not required will be deleted while those that are still need won't have to be re-downloaded.

My general practice is to put my laptop to sleep when I'm done for the day, leaving it plugged in. I wait until it confirms sleep mode (flashing power button) and then close the lid (it stays asleep).

The next morning I come back and the laptop is on and quite warm.

powercfg /LASTWAKE shows this:
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 0
I checked Windows Update and it did check for updates at 6:00AM this morning. So that must have awakened it. BUT... why didn't the laptop go back to sleep?

Answer:Windows 8.1 update check wakes laptop, won't sleep again

I went to the Action Center and discovered that the maintenance check is done at 3AM, but the checkbox to automatically wake the computer from sleep was unchecked... which means it should not launch if the laptop is sleeping. In any event, I have set it to 11PM and will see if that makes a difference.

Windows Update doesn't seem to be working for me, it's giving me an "unknown error" with the code above. I have tried Tweaking.com's Windows Repair Tool, but the same problem still arises. I'd be grateful for any help.

Coincidentally, when I try to install Microsoft .Net Framework 4, the same error code appears and the program refuses to install. Could it be related?

Hi,
Under the "File Hash Information" section of a KB article (e.g.,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2849470), it lists the SHA1 and SHA256 hashes for each of the different MSU you can download.
I used to use the FCIV (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11533) from Microsoft to check these file hashes, and it is capable of computing the
SHA1 as well as the MD5 for a file, but it can't compute the SHA256.
Does Microsoft make available a utility to compute the SHA256 for a file, or do I need to write my own using a bit of C#?
Thanks!

Hey guys, this is the first time I have reached out to try and fix this problem. I haven't been able to do updates for a couple years and I have been working on this off and on.
I am reluctant to post this, since it may be the cause of the problems.... however... I think my problem stems from messing around with the drivers when I original purchased the computer. It could have also occurred when I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional... Everything seemed to work fine like updates for about a year or so. Didn't notice the updates not working until about a 2 years ago when I realized my laptop was having issues playing FFXI and I found that my graphics card was not using any resources, as well as other things seem to not working. Such as sfc /scannow, when I run it I get an error after about 10-15 minutes saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.", and when I run DXDiag I get very little information on my computer with a lot of N/A's, though the amount of RAM is correct as is the video memory (I think) despite not showing the correct graphics processor.

I went to school for this kind of stuff and have just fooled myself all these years, acting like I actually know stuff. I mean I may have been able to figure it out back then. But not a chance now.

I can't even remember any of the steps I followed from other peoples solutions and posts over the past... So if the previous stuff isn't actually needed for your information... I apolo... Read more

Hello,

We have 5 workstations running Windows 10 ENT 1607 - all are installed via MDT and are managed to a small degree by a handful of basic GP settings. I also have WSUS running here at home - allowing me to manage the update process with ease.

All 5 stations are accessing WSUS using settings created and placed in the registry using the freeware WSUSClientManager tool out there on the internet. This tool has been flawless in creating the correct settings and allowing all machine to hit WSUS without fail.

However - for the June 2017 patch window - I discovered one of our machines was suddenly not able to update correctly. In the screen below - the station is seeing WSUS and is getting the correct three updates it needs. But notice that the Install Now button cannot be pressed.

I first thought it maybe a corrupt WU layout or possible some GP settings gone bad. So I stripped the GP back to default and forced a gpupdate /force command. Then I deleted all WU settings placed by the WSUSClientManager tool and restarted. Still locked out. So I then ran the latest WUTroubleshooter to essentially reset WU back to scratch. Rebooted. Went into the WU Dialog and see something slightly different:

But the bloody "Some settings are managed..." message is still displayed. Making it impossible to even click on Check For Updates

NOTE: I have tried every article I can find that suggests the this "Some settings are managed" message hanging around is some old bug ... Read more
