Slow computer, slow & crashing internet. EXEC.EXE problems?

Question: Slow computer, slow & crashing internet. EXEC.EXE problems?

Could someone please look at my hijack this log? My computer is running painfully slow, especially the internet. I see two suspicious programs in my task manager: exec.exe & x1exec.exe. I really appreciate it! Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Slow computer, slow & crashing internet. EXEC.EXE problems?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

Hi,
I believed I had a virus and contacted the SWI forum.
I detail below the last reply from nasdaq who had been helping me:

You have many such errors in your Addtion.txt file.

I suspect that you will have to fix the SideBySide issue.
This is not malware and not my forte.
I suggest you start a new topic here.

My fairly new (2007) laptop has started having recurring problems- running slow, Internet Explorer crashing all the time and loading pages very slowly, weird display problem (font on webpages out of place or the wrong size, icons not displaying normally). I have run AVG, Windows Defender, and Trend Housecall, but haven't found anything. My CPU seems to be running a lot even when I'm not doing anything on the computer. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Below is my HJT log:

My computer was fine one day, switched it on the next and the Internet wouldn't load. The connection is fine so I wasn't sure what it was. After some research online (using my iPhone) I decided to remove my anti-virus in case that was preventing it from opening. It opened after that (I use Chrome) but it kept coming up with Shockwave plug in unresponsive message. So I then removed Shockwave, message is gone but still no joy.

I also removed Chrome thinking if I re-install it might help, this may have been a bad move because IE is so slow I can't get the page to load to reinstall. Aside from this everything is else is mega slow, I tried emptying recycle bin and it stays on the timer forever and never does anything. It also won't shut down, it stays on the logging off screen forever.

System restote doesn't work, I've done a malware scan, removed all spyware (as I read that can slow it down). I just don't know what else I can do. Sorry for the long winded post, just need some help! :(

One other thing to note is that several times when trying to shut down it comes up with the end now box for something called AUSUpdateWTitle, no idea what that is and it's not on the start up list.

Answer:Really stuck- computer slow, crashing, all sorts of problems

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide. I am running Windows XP - SP3. The system has slowed a lot and Internet Explorer keeps opening multiple windows on it's own. I receive a message at startup on a black screen " Invalid boot.ini" It continues to say it is booting from and it flashes off the screen before I can read it. I ran DDS and have included the two files it produced. When I attempt to run Gmer my system, or the program itself, locks up. After clicking on the GMER.exe file, it loads and then automatically begins a scan of /system then becomes "unresponsive". Once I got the blue screen after running GMER, and it read "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shut down. Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Answer:Slow Computer,crashing & Slow Startup

Hello Sc00by22 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues. For these types of issues I would suggest posting to the Windows XP Home and Professional forum. The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to the operating system, performance and applications. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found. When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum. Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.Cheers.OT

Hello everyone,
Simple question, too simple for these boards probably. My friend's computer crashed few months ago, she had windows re-installed and now the same is happening again. She isn't a technocrat. She doesn't 'build' or any of the other complex procedures featuring on these boards. Exchanges emails, listens to uploaded music and occasionally surfs the net. She has Norton installed. What is she doing to introduce 'viruses'?

Answer:slow, slow computer, now crashing again

I highly doubt it's virus' if you have fresh windows and the same problem. Sounds like a hardware problem like overheating.

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

my internet speed has been unusually low for the past couple of days, i've called my internet provider and I'm sure the problem isn't with the modem. I've tried removing all virus and spyware but it didn't fix the problem. I've also been recieving a script error message when I restart the computer regarding a missing boot.ini file, and I can't find the icon for my drive E anymore on my computer, and I can't access it through run either, due to the changes or the removal of drive E, I also can not restore my computer to an earlier point. I don't know if these problems are related, i just need to get my internet speed fixed first. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me

Hello Techspot!!!!

I have had my laptop for nearly 3 years but I wouldn't deem it to be a poor performance laptop. Recently I have been getting slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling, and it is very frustrating!!! I share the BT 3 homehub with good connection speed which was checked and found fine! My housemates laptop has started having the same problem as mine and I really want to fix this issue. The internet, keyboard and scrolling speeds vary everyday but overall are slow performers. I have looked through some of the threads and have seen people posting long threads of code etc :/ Is there anyone out there who has the time and patience to help me fix this problem? It would be most appreciated!!!

Many Thanks

Dan

Hello!    My moms computer I believe is still infected with something and would like your help to figure it out.  I have done what I am capable of for last couple days and know I cannot do anything else  without further assistance from a specialist.      Problem is: computer is taking a long time to boot up and when the screen gets to windows desktop, the icons on there are all white and slowly start showing icons one at a time, whereas before it showed all icons when windows desktop came up.  Also when you click on programs it takes at least a minute or longer for the programs to open ( I have timed it), they used to pop right up.      Other Problem is: when you go on the internet it takes forever to bring the homepage up and if you try going to other sites it just hangs and will not open the website unless you hit refresh or reload several times and then it will finally load the page or says page cannot be displayed. this is intermittent and sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. it is the same thing on all three browsers she has on here (IE, Firefox and Opera) She only plays pogo games and now cannot do that as it says she doesn't have java or cannot load the applet in there. When some websites do come up the page is scrambled with letters over the top of each other and images might load half of the image. Hard to explain    and sometimes doesn't load whole page.       I have ... Read more

Answer:Slow computer and internet problems. Think Infected?

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. 1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. *************************************************************************Malwarebytes' Anti-RootkitPlease download Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.Be sure to pri... I'm particularly suspicious of the 4h8. exe (O4) and 2xx.exe (O4) entries.

I've run my Norton Anti-virus and found nothing. Ad-Aware didn't locate a problem as well.

Also I have a problem shutting off the computer.
Whenever I try to shut down it just restarts and I have to manually switch the machine off from the actual power button on the box!

Any ideas as to why this may be happening? I'd appreciate any insight.

Could someone please look this over and let me know if there's anything out of order, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!
Manozi

My computer has been slow lately. It lags and I figure I have spyware and such on it. I have ZeroAds, The Ultimate Troubleshooter, Norton System Works, and Norton Antivirus. It's a little quicker since I installed and updated these, but still not much better. I wasn't sure if these programs got rid of spyware or anything or if I should try some different software. Also, I wasn't sure if having all these programs to try and clean up my computer would counteract eachother and slow down my computer. Also, the time it takes to boot up my computer is a lot longer than it ever has been. Finally, my Internet Explorer doesn't work right. If I use AOL, the internet usually works right, but when I try Internet Explorer (because I don't have AOL at school), I get tons of popups even though I have ZeroAds and then Explorer just freezes and eventually I have to CTRL ALT DELETE it. If anyone knows how to help me it'd be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Slow XP, slow startup, and problems with Internet Explorer

Use Ad Aware (http://www.ad-aware.com) and Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html). Make sure you update them with their update feature.

Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features.
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Computer displays the following :
3.8 windows experience index
Intel pentium dual 2.0Ghz  processor
64 Bit

Has Ccleaner installed
has Comodo antivirus and Comodo cleaning essentials installed.
All virus scans  find no infections,  and report that all is well and protected.  ( B/C of the way the computer is operating i'm doubting that and betting there is an infections of some sort)

I Have run Comodo cleaning essentials and  results find no abnormalities or infections.
Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.
have run rKill  and it  finds  no abnormalities  or infections.
All virus scan results  find no infections.
Windows updates is activated  and  all latest updates have been installed.... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 computer suddenly slow to get on internet, slow to browse websites etc

Hi flywelder Maybe we aren't looking at an infection here. There's tons of reasons why a system can slow down, and not all of them are malware related. Let's try to take a look at this issue under another angle shall we?MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

Im looking for some assistance on these two matters.

Firstly my Computer is taking along time to load up at start, I have only uploaded 1 new program in the last month or so and that is PPmate ( a Live steaming program).

We have been having trouble with this computer for a while. It somehow got infected with a visious worm a while back, and with help from this site we managed to sort that. Then sinse then the computer has never been the same. At first we had some networking issues, and after not finding a solution we had it fixed at th local computer store (my parents took it in and didn't ask what the problem was, so not sure how it was fixed). Now still though the computer is extremely slow for its specs, and often programms fail to respond and have to be forsed to close (using the little dialog button that comes up). Also (Although i have not seen this myself) my mum has been saying that letters and symbols appear over parts of websites (i assume this is html), although im not sure is this is related). We have AVG and Spybot S&D installed, and neither of these find anything abnormal. Also the computer is getting alot of error reports from windows after programs fail to close properly.
Here is the pc specs, then a hjt log, thanks for all the help, this is such a usefull site.

Hi guys,
I have got a problem here:
I run Backup Exec 10.d with diffirential back up every day, every time it takes me 13 hours (wich is too long), although all data that was backed up about 230 GB. Also when I see the report it says that some directories takes more time, some less; some of them have different back up rate (from 20 MB/min to 200 MB/min). What could be the problem? Thanks in advance

This is my first time posting a question on bleeping computer. We are so thankful that you are out there to help us and not rip us off. I think my computer is infected. My desktop starts up very slowly, my internet connection is slow (it's slow in pulling up websites and some never come up). I'm getting lots of pop ups (even though pop up blocker is enabled). When I go to open the control panel, a flashlight pops up as if it is looking for it (it eventually does open but it takes a while). I had a problem at one time with a lot of POS.TMP files and followed advice from posts on this site to get rid of them. Well, my current problems started when a friend downloaded a music program. I believe it was called Soundman. When I noticed the computer acting funny, I went into the control panel and deleted it along with some other programs I found (PPC Booster, P2P Max, Ron Tool Adsoftinc, Wyzo, Eco Bar). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hey I recently bought a new computer that is much better than my old one in stats but its not acting like it.

Windows XP
Service Pack 3
Intel Dual Core E5200
2.50GHz
2GB RAM

Now it was running ok to begin with but then the internet started having problems. It kept dropping out or fluctuating in speed and nothing seemed to fix it. It didnt happen on my old system it sat nicely at 54MB/s all the time.

Then the rest of the computer started going slow to start up so i got rid of some start up programs and desktop items which didnt seem to do much. And now ive noticed that when songs are playing in itunes they skip seconds every now and then.

Also when i click for programs to come up after i wait till everything is started up properly i have to wait a minute or two before they open. And burning DVDs has doubled in how long it takes.

Any ideas of what could be wrong, ive scanned for viruses using Avira and spyware using SUPERantispyware, ive cleaned registry using Registry easy and removed all unnecesary crap using CCleaner.

It got suggested that my computer was going slow because of AVG8 so i got rid of it and with got Avira but it slowed up again.

Hey, basically computer's been a bit slow and tried clearing some stuff and done other things, but still no luck, to make things worse internet's been a lot slow and when using either firefox and internet explorer. For example when going on youtube some videos would freeze in the middle and i would have to reload the page, and sometimes takes ages to load a page.

So here's my DDS log and hopefully the problem can be diagnosed, thank you.

Hello, my computer has been extremely slow on boot and my desktop has been hijacked with a message about changing it to a website. I also have a program called "error fix" showing up on my desktop and I have no idea where it came from. I've run Malware Bytes twice on the computer with numerous problems found. After running it the second time, I got a message saying I needed to run CHKDSK which I ran. Also, my internet is running very slowly and I just got a message that says "A program on your computer has corrupted your default setting for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has reset this sietting to your original search provider, Live.Search (search.live.com). Internet will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providors."

Here is my Hijackthis Log, if you need the MBAM logs, please let me know and I will post those as well.

Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your time!

Right... So I've got some problems...
-It started just a while ago when I suddenly started getting all of these pop-ups. One of the appeared to be a virus-scanner advising me to buy or download it. I didn't really heed that one.
-Right after that, my own computer started giving me messages saying 'you're computer is infected'. That, and the machine itself started crackling like some sort of coffee machine or something. When I clicked on the message balloon I told you about earlier, I got the same popup.
-A curious thing that has happened also: I just restarted the computer, and it went REAAAALLLY slow.
-Another curious thing: my computer has suddenly decided to get a mind of its own, it appears. At random moments, it opens up random maps (usually my documents).
-I can't do anything on the internet anymore. All websites I choose to visit, just don't appear. It appears as thought they are blocked somehow. The browsers do say they're "done loading the webpage", but all I get is a white screen. And in the case of internet explorer, a message saying the program doesn't respond -_-'. I actually have to get help on my sister's computer XD
-The final, and most troubling thing of all: I just attempted to restart the computer, and I don't get anything done anymore. When I click on my icon in the startup screen, the 'startup sequence' begins, I can see my wallpaper and all, and then it completely stops... N... Read more

Some kind of trojan invaded my computer I believe. I ran Symantec and it deleted a bunch of entries but the auto-protect kept popping up to block something labeled Downloader and file "kernel32.exe" I was eventually able to delete it in safe mode after turning off the system restore. But then the auto-protect kept blocking Adware.Webbuying with file name qmlqrib.dll (both of these were in system32 folder according to the log), but there was no file by that name anywhere. I ran Ad-Aware which removed two entries with a level 10 threat assessment named BookedSpace and Win32.TrojanClicker, however the Adware.Webbuying continued to be blocked by Symantec. I then ran Spybot which found and deleted numerous entries and I no longer get auto-protect for Adware.Webbuying. However, I continue to get pop-ups, internet is slower, computer is slower, and it seems to prevent downloads after a certain point in time (haven't made it past 20% of a file from various different sites ranging from 4-20 MB). Who knows what else it is doing; hopefully not downloading my personal data. Please lend me a hand if you can. Thanks. I have included my HijackThis log:

We are running backup exec and trying to backup all the Documents folders on all pc's on the network. When setting up the backup job, you click on the remote pc and it takes up to 5-7 minutes to expand the drive. It then takes the same amount of time to connect when executing the backup job. The remote agent is installed on the remote pc's. It happens on all pc's on the 100mb network. I have searched the web and Backup Exec's support site, but can find no one else having the problem. Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I've been having problems on this version of windows 7 ultimate 64x I installed on a friend's computer. Everything works fine but firefox occassionally would open a new tab to random spamware sites and things of that nature but only when firefox was open. The other problem I'm having is that before this started, everything ran great, but now, the internet on this computer runs horribly slow, I've ran speed tests on speedtest.net and it's showing ping of over 300 and downloads and upload speed of under 1.00 mb/s. I run the same tests on my laptop and it's showing my internet is running fine at 10-15 mb/s.  The desktop runs fine otherwise.  I can't seem to shake this problem.  I thought I had fixed it last night when things ran great again, but this morning when i booted it up, the same problem with the internet happened.  I have no idea what's going on. I have ran malware bytes, rkill, and combo fix scans. I have the combofix log attatched to this. I look forward to any help / insite you guys can give me into this problem.

I have had trouble with my internet running extremely slowly. I have run virus and spyware scans and nothing has come up. I also get a random search tab with a window with the thing I search. My internet will also randomly close without warning. I seem to be able to watch Youtube videos just fine. Then I started having trouble with Windows Explorer crashing and restarting. I don't know whats been going on, please help!

Side information:
I play Battleforge (an online game) and my units will move without freezing, but they will move about 1 second after the command rather than instantly.

Answer:Slow Internet and Crashing Explorer

It still sounds like you have some sort of infection. I would suggest try running your scans in Safe Mode. This sometimes helps as the infection shouldn't be running, increasing the chance of being detected and removed by antimalware software.

Also, try downloading and running Malwarebytes Antimalware. I have found this software to be great in detecting infections that others miss.

I starting experiencing constant dropped connections from my router (netgear). I also received 'low bandwith' warnings from several websites. After resetting the router, clearing cache and deleting temporary internet my connection is still very slow. After troubleshooting with Netgear and Comcast support, they determined my internet connection is fine and the router is working properly.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I also ran netstat -a under a command prompt and got 4 TCP connections and 16 UDP connections (possible malicious packets?)

Netscape essentially crashes upon starting, taking nearly 100% of the cpu.

I ran Spybot, Spyware blaster and Panda Scan.

Attached are the hijackthis and Panda logs

Please advise.

Thanks,

Steve

Hello,

I have a windows 2003 server enterprise edition, 12 gb ram, 6 hds all raid 5, another raid controller with a storage also raid 5, we have a 3rd party software on it, backup exec, this server is also one of our domain controllers, it is a poweredge dell server. The problem, Symantec Backup excec 11d was working fine, then one day around 11/30/07, or some where around there, the job rate was 1300mb for job rate, now we see it at 600-800mb for job rate. We talked with Symantec, did everything, Defrag, updates, set certain settings such as use backup exec file compression software instead of hardware, talked with dell, updated all firmware updates, we are backing up to a dell powervault 132t, with 2 tape drives, total slots 30 but only using 28 tapes in it, so slow, use to run perfect, we suspect now an update or something, BUT WHAT!!! please help, boss is not happy and I am all out of ideas, the boss says "BLOW IT OUT and START ALL OVER!" do i really have to do that just to fix this problem? any suggestions, fixes there has to be someone that ran into this same problem...

Hi

My computer is cronically slow and keeps crashing....I know it is by some distance not state of the art technology but recently my computer has become very slow whilst performing very basic tasks, e-mail etc and is also prone to 'locking up' and crashing....are these symptoms of a virus? spyware....I have run my AVG 8.5 protection and it comes back with nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

C.

Answer:slow computer and keeps crashing

Well...how about a little more info on this system ?System manufacturer and model? How much RAM installed? How large is C: partition? How much free space currently on C:?FWIW: AVG 8.5 is quite old, IMO. BSODs can be caused by many things, including lack of proper maintenance, damaged files, and hardware problems.Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html.Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file. When scanning is done, Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items. Save the report as BSOD.txt. If the reported date for errors is not in chronological order (most recent at top), then you may want to sort that column to make it so...before saving the file.Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.General info on slow computers: Slow Computer-browser Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/87058/slow-computerbrowser-check-here-first;-it-may-not-be-malware/ Louis

I'm on an Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP Professional

About two weeks ago I either got hacked or a virus/tojan.
Most of my email addressbook on yahoo received a phony email.

I did not think much of it at the time - changed my email password & moved on.

Lately my computer is moveing painfully slow. It also crashes at random times (particularly when I open multiple programs).

I have tried running CCleaner, Avast and Spybot. Nothing was found.

I also ran disk defragment and that did not seem to help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

John

Answer:Slow Computer & Crashing

Hello,And welcome to BleepingComputer.com, before we can assist you with your question of: Am I infected? You will need to perform the following tasks and post the logs of each if you can.Malwarebytes Anti-MalwarePlease download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Full Scan"... Answer:Slow And Crashing Computer

Hi stuckthrottle,

Sorry for the delay, this forum is swamped right now.

I don't see any signs of infection in your log. This does not rule it out for certain but it would have to be a rootkit or other malware that has serious stealth capablities.

Before we do more scans, I would like to know more about your system crashes. Do you see (even for a second) the famous Windows Stop Error screen -- a solid blue screen with a few lines of white text in the center? (AKA the Blue Screen of Death.) Under what circumstances do the crashes take place? When playing a particular game or using a certain program, or do they happen under just about any circumstances, even when the system is idle?

Please post your answers to a reply here. Also, since it has been more than a week, please run a fresh HJT scan and post the new log.

Dave

Hello, First I would like to say thanks for taking the time to read my post!!! That being said I have done everything I know of to resolve this issue on my own I am a DJ and I am using this computer for live shows, lately its been real sluggish and crashing out and its becoming a major issue for me.... So what I have done so far to fix this problem is, I started with running error checking and defragment. I removed any programs I'm no longer using. killed all the processes I didn't need using Start-up Inspector for Windows and I am maintaining them with Start-up Inspector - Start-up Monitor. I did a virus scan and turned up nothing..... This has helped with my everyday usage but not when I run scratch live (the program I use to DJ) I dont know what logs you might need so here they all are.... Thanks again!!!SteveEDIT: Attachments have been removed because they are not allowed in this forum

I've scanned my system with my antivirus and anti-spyware software, but my PC still keeps crashing (Win XP). This could be a hardware problem, but I think its malware so I'm here to find out for sure. Also, I have two Windows directories, for some reason. One is in C drive, the other's in E drive. I've scanned the C drive, I'll also scan E.And FWIW, That rootkit scanning software keeps crashing my PC, dunno what that means.EDIT: Uploaded scan of E: drive too, as ark2.log.Also whenever my computer crashes I get that Windows has recovered from a serious error message. Answer:Computer slow and crashing

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You don't seem to have an antivirus program installed. Download a free one at Grisoft http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php. Install it and make sure to check for updates.

You don't seem to have a firewall program installed. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Download a free one at ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you might get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on start update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update suc... Read more

My company is now using a cloud server called Box.com. Yesterday I tried to install an application called Box for Office on my computer. It said that I needed two things before it could be installed. Something to do with Visual and .net framework 4 which it said it would install for me. The install for the .net framework 4 was taking a really long time and then before it was complete I received a blue screen that said something about the volume being dirty. It ran through this entire blue screen of prompts and then restarted. After that the system was unstable and everything I tried to open kept shutting down including the internet.
After a short while everything seemed to be ok, but then when my computer tried to do its updates in the middle of the night the computer became frozen on the start up screen. It stayed frozen like that for several hours until I finally forced it to shut down and then restarted it.
Once the computer was restarted the internet was so slow that my Gmail was stating there was a problem and could not retrieve emails due to the slow connection speed. I figured it had to be related to the installation problem the day prior so I went to add/remove and deleted .net framework 4 and anything associated with Box.com.
This did not fix the problem, so I then tried to do a system restore to a prior date, but it would not work. I found on another site that this was due to my Norton settings, so I turned off one of the settings, but that did not wor... Read more

Hello,I Have a cable internet. I am supposed to get a 7.5mbps internet speed but when I connect it to my router, It slows down ALOT, goes from 7.5mbps to about 2.5 mbps and sometimes even to something like 1mbps Also, when I connect it on my router, It will usually run fairly good for about 5 minutes, will crash for about 2 minutes and will run very slow for about 20 minutes and will do always the same thing. When I connect directly to my modem it goes full speed (7-7.5mbps) and will never crash like it does with my router. I don't remember since when it has been happening because it has been doing that for a very good while and we never found why it was doing that Hope you will help fix this problem because i'm very tired of it to be honest ! Welcome to TSF.

The README thread should have told you what to do. But here goes:

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Windows explorer, not IE (though it does happen when I'm using IE...). Anyway, I run Windows XP. Lately, my computer will sort of seize up, the taskbar at the bottom of the screen will disappear and reappear with the windows in a different order.

Now, that may not sound bad, but it basically makes the computer useless for 10-15 seconds and sometimes this freezes. The bottom taskbar will just freeze. When I go into Task Manager it shows the cpu going around 100% (sometimes, not always) and things really slow down, so I have to restart. Also, it's starting to cause a lot of lag on an online game I play, Final Fantasy XI.

I've run 3 different spyware programs and 2 anti-virus programs (all free btw) but it doesn't help. Any ideas on what might wrong or what I should try? Maybe a virus or something my programs can't detect, I dunno. Thanks.

Oh yeah, also for over a year now I sometimes get this popup, saying it's scanning my system or has detected a virus or something and gets me to try and get this anti-virus program from them. I forget the name.

Answer:Windows Explorer Problems - slow down and crashing

Hi and Welcome

First off you should not be running 2 Antivirus programs at the same time or even have them installed at the same time, that also goes for AntiSpyware programs that live/resident scan, they will conflict and also slow and hang your PC as both will be trying to scan the files at the same time.

as for the popups and any other issues due to malware that maybe on your PC, please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these... Read more

Firstly, I apologise for my lack of technical knowledge and therefore the fact that this post may now make much sense. I have trwled lots of forums for help but nothing I have read has worked, so I am now starting my own thread.

The problem starts with the computer not booting, and then when it does, it takes an age. If I run check and repair, it tells me that it cannot repair the system.

In systen restore it says there are no recovery points.

When it does eventually boot, the toolbar is different, more basic looking. There is sometimes a bubble on the toolbar saying 'windows could not connect to the event notification service'.

Also on the toolbar, the speaker icon has an x through it and says something along the lines of its not running and other times the icon is not there at all.

All programs and functions are extremely slow, with widows explorer often restarting.

The problems still exist in safe mode - however we cannot get to safe mode from F8 for some reason and can only access it when the PC has switched itself off and we restart it and get the option.

I can schedule chkdsk for the next boot but when the system tries to run it, it just hangs.

sfc\scannow always stops at 26%

check and repair gives the message: unspecified changes to the system configuration might have caused the problem

repair action: system files check and repair.
result: failes. error code 0x45d

we have also come across

start up repair offline

Answer:Continual crashing, slow starting and big problems!

Hello Technophobe, welcome to SF!
When you manage to get into Safe Mode... Can you still do stuff or does the system hang in safe mode?
Can / have you checkec in safe mode whether you still have sufficient free space on your harddisk?

Could you try to follow this tut in safe mode? It might not have a dump file but will still tell us a lot.

Hey Everyone,

First off I'm pretty new here I know..........

My problem is that my internet connection is pretty slow on my main computer. It's an older (6 years) Dell. I'm still running XP and IE7. I have Comcast cable and it's connected through a Linksys modem. The problem is that the internet response on this machine is pretty slow. I have a laptop that I use and that is much better. I would figure that my "main" computer would be faster since it has a hard connection, not wireless.

I know that isn't much info so ask away and I do what I can to provide all the info needed.

Thanks!!!!!!

Answer:Slow internet - Slow computer

Ok I recently noticed that my computer is taking longer to load and also it lags when running programs. In addition, I noticed that my internet was slow. I use Yahoo DSL.

I defraged my hard drive with Auslogics Disk Defrag and it did not speed anything up. I did a adaware and spybot scan. And it did not help. So I decided to come here.

Following the steps, I ran an activescan and it found only 1 trojan that could explain my slow internet problem (hxxp://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/security-info/about-malware/encyclopedia/overview.aspx?idvirus=143883]). It was removed. I always had IE-SQUAD and Spyware blaster enabled and up to date. And I did my windows update. I am running Win XP SP2, not SP3, since there were a few things my computer cannot do that I need on SP3.

But my computer is still running slow and "locks up" briefly. If anyone can help, I would be very thankful. Thank you!

Below is my Hijack log and attached is my activescan log:

It seems when I start up applications like VLC and Firefox. Navigating in Firefox and in My Computer seems to take forever. Also takes a longer than normal to boot and load the desktop fully. I ran malware bytes and avast. I ran Dell Diagnostics the other day that took about 36 hours and it did come up with some hard drive errors. I have most of the errors and codes documented so let me know if you need them. I also just ran chkdsk and it came up with 4 bad segments (not horrible right?). After the chkdsk it seems to be running better and not crashing, but I have a feeling it will happen again. Any suggestions besides getting a new hard drive?

Good Morning. I need HELP.

My computer is running slow, it has a bunch of pop-ups when starting and it also crashes on a regular basis. The details are as follows:

Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop
2000 Windows XP

When I start my computer and Windows begins to load, the 1st pop-up is usually one that says "dsca.exe - application error, click OK to terminate the application". The next pop-up is usually the "system 32" file folder. Next will be a pop-up box that says "Data Execution Prevention WMI, windows has closed this program". Then about 3 pop-ups in a row will come up saying the same thing "dll.exe". Also I get error messages concerning McAfee, something about a problem with "backup".

This is what I've done: Ran a scan on McAfee and the results were, 15 items detected, 7 fixed, 3 quarantined and 2 items failed to be terminiated and 3 just sayed rescan after reboot. Those 2 that failed were:

c:\windows\systems32\winlogon.exe
c:\windows\systems32\dla\tfswctrl.exe

Tried to run Adware, but got an error message "error while loading the ad-ware definition file".

Ran Hijack this and the following is my log:

My computer is running slow. Each time i open up internet explorer and search for something, when I click on the link I get taken to a completely different link. I have to go back to the search results and click on the link again to go to the right place.

My computer has also been crashing frequently. It happens when I get on the internet. It may happen when I just checking my email or it may happen when I'm on 5 different sites at one time. I ran an antivirus/antispyware program (AVG) which I uninstalled. It showed that I have been infected with a Trojan Horse Clicker.AALX

I downloaded and tried opening up HijackThis, but it wouldn't open. Did the same with Malwarebyte Anti-Malware and it also didn't open (couldn't even get to their webiste. It just gave me a internet connection error)

How can I stop this and get rid of the trojan or any other infection that I may have?
Please help...

Answer:Computer slow, crashing, trojans

I was able to finally start the programs - malwarebyte and hijack. These are the logs from them.

Good Morning.

We have a roommate and he goes to some really questionable sites.. anyway, I have noticed that my Internet explorer keeps crashing. My computer is running really slow.. I dont know if it's because its a POS computer or if it is because I have something eating up space somewhere. Also, and obviously Im not computer person, but I notice when my PC freezes up, if I look at what is eating up CPU usage, my "system idol" is usually at 80-90%... is this normal?? Somehow I have 50 process running and I honestly dont know whats what.

So basically, if you can see anything really obvious in my HJT log please tell me. Also, I came through last night and deleted cookies and I think temp files? If you have other suggestions please tell me..

I did run superantispyware but havent rebooted yet.. it take my computer seriously 10 mins to reboot.

Alright let me start off by saying that I am new & looking for help. My computer is about 6 years old. I got it back in Christmas of 99.Its a

Hewlett Packard Pavilion
Intel Celeron processor 600 Mhz

Memory
64MB SDRAM memory with up to 11MB allocated memory

Hard Drive
10.2 gb Ultra DMA hard drive (Currently right now I think I only have 3.20 gb in the hard drive left)

CD-ROM
Sony CD-R/CD-RW Drive 52x/32x/52x

Alright I usually find that my computer crashes when either I first get past the password screen, this doesn't happen alot. But I usually find that most of the time my computer locks up when I'm surfing the net & it's annoying.Usually when I'm downloading or listening to music when I'm browsing. Then sometimes my computer is slow when I go to different websites & I am using a cable modem.Overall my computer is slow when it comes to internet tasks. It freezes alot & I really get tired of it because when I download movies, games & music & I let the computer be, I come back to see it frozen & then I have to shut it down & reboot again.

I've tried various spyware/and adaware removal programs, it doesn't seem to help problems plus, the spyware & adaware keeps coming back. Like yesterday, I deleted a whole bunch of spyware.A couple of days later, it detects new spyware & there's a whole lot of it. It never goes away!

Plus at times, it take the computer a while for things to load up, like I opened ... Read more

My computer is running very slow. It's got an i5 4690K processor and NVIDIA GTX 970 card but I have lousy frame rates in most games.
So I tried running a diagnostic tool with system mechanic and Rundll32 is crashing nearly ALL the time. There are no errors but the readout below shows the thing crashes every few hours. Could this be the cause of the slow running? I have tried virus scans with AVG and malwarebytes and found nothing.

Answer:Slow computer - rundll32 crashing

You could try this post from www.answers.microsoft.com/ --> http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...bb49f6d?auth=1

This might help you, and I know it is Windows 7, but Windows 10 and 7 are close in relation.

Hope this helps you any.

Also, could be that your HDD is fragmented, better do a check. Type in the Start Menu "Defragment" and the program will pop up.

My computer freezes and crashes randomly, and is excruciatingly slow to boot up...I am at my wit's end (of course, that wasn't far to go) trying to fix it. I hope you can help, but I appreciate the effort either way!

I read the 5-step instructions; here are the results:

I completed Step 1. No applicable programs.
My computer crashes about halfway through virus scans, with my program or online scans--I crashed with Panda, too.
I installed Spyblaster but not IESpypad as I use Firefox all of the time.
Skipped Step 4 as I have Service Pack 2.
Step 5:

Over the past week or so, I've noticed my computer has been running slow. Then it would crash for (seemingly) no reason. Then I would have to force it to restart because it would completely lock up. Thank you so much for your time and help!!

Answer:Slow Computer/Crashing IE and Firefox

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE:...
