Resetting settings on Netgear N300 router...

Question: Resetting settings on Netgear N300 router...

Hi everyone...I have a Netgear N300 wireless router that I bought and have been using since 04/2012 together with an adtec modem on my at&t internet sevice. My modem went out and I replaced it with the now recommended replacement modem which is the Motorola 3360.
As a result and in doing so my settings are having to be reset on my N300 router for my wireless signal to be used for my wierless devices. In trying to do so and in going through the setup of the router again I've discovered in logging into the Netgear website to recover/reset the router settings for the new modem setup I'm being told by Netgear that the N300 router I bought came with only a 90 day tech support and that I can purchase a tech support extended plan for $129.99 for 1yr or $199.99 for 2yrs for them to be able to help me and synchronize and reset the router settings.
Quite honestly, I can't see spending this much extra money on support for a router that cost me $50.00 in the first place. I may as well just buy another router for $50.00 to get another 90 day tech support and to provide support in setting up the new one but it's the principle of the thing and it's such a waste to trash the present router when it is in perfect working order otherwise. Then again if this is how shoddy and shysterish Netgear's tech support is, I don't believe I would want to support them or in anyway encourage them in their use of a policy that is so unfair and lacking in flexibility to such a small assistance request to reset this modem which would not take them but maybe 5 minutes or less.
My question therefore is this: Has anyone out there experienced a similar or like situation and is there a workaround or another solution to this other than going through Netgear to reset the router's settings? Is there a way to recover or discover the settings and reset them manually myself?
I very much appreciate any help anyone can offer and I thank you all in advance for any help and any advice anyone can offer. Thanks alot...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Resetting settings on Netgear N300 router...

Hey drpepper. You can manually reset your router settings to its default settings as they were when you bought it. I would disconnect the router from the modem and just use the simple procedure to reset the router. You can then access the router setup page and change the default password, network name (SSID), and set up your encryption mode (wpa2 preferred) and create a password/network key to secure your router. Save any changes you make, and when done, power off the router. Power on your modem, wait a minute, then power up the router, wait a minute, then see if you can detect your network. All of the info for doing this is in the N300 router setup manual, with the reset procedure on page 39.

So I have AT&T DSL. I bought a Netgear N300 ADSL2+ Modem/WiFi Router that is compatible with my service.

Previously with this Modem/Router it would constantly drop the wireless connection for the Wii I have that was used to stream Netflix.

So recently I bought a Linksys E2500 Router so I could be able to use the Wii, along with 3 other desktops, 1 laptop, and 3 phones.

My ideal setup would be this:
Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Connect the Linksys Router to be what all the devices connect to wirelessly (this would serve as the DHCP server)
I have read that one of the Routers has to be set to "BRIDGED" mode, yet I don't know which device has to be Bridged

this is being set into bridge mode - by changing to a modem

then connect the modem to the WAN on the router and you should be good to go

Do you have a wireless laptop that you can you can put next to the wii - would be useful to see the quality of the wireless signal and how many other wireless are there which may cause interference

put xirrus onto the laptop and put the laptop next to the wii and post a xirrus screen shot

How do you connect two routers together to increase signal through the whole house? I am trying to use the n300 as my main router (its hooked to cable modem) and use the 2wire as an access point. The two are connected by a known good ethernet cable.

Thanks,

Josh

Answer:Connecting netgear n300 router to 2wire 2701 router

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. [You will not need a cross-over cable if one of the "routers" is a computer.] Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NA... Read more

hey

I'm trying to connect a latop (Packard Bell - Easy Note) onto a Netgear N300 wireless router (WNR2000v3).

I have already connected a separate laptop which is working fine but the Packard Bell (about 6 years old) wont connect, it will detect my wireless network but then asks for a "Network Key".

I'm assuming this the same password that I set up when I configured the router but when I enter it I get the following message:

"The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configeration. This can be entered as 5 or 13ascii characters or 10 or 16 hexadecimal characters".

Not entirely sure what that means but my password is 9 character long.

If anyone can help that would be great, thanks

Answer:Adding device to Netgear N300 Router

Sounds like the network card on the Packard-Bell will only work with WEP encryption which uses 64-bit or 128-bit passwords. Some would work with 5 or 13 ascii characters words (apple, mothershelper), but most required 10 or 16 hexadecimal characters (1-0, A-F)".

If that is the case, you may be able to find driver updates that will allow the card to work with newer security protocols, buy a new card/USB adapter for the P-B, or use WEP for everything.

What is the make/model of the network card? model of the EasyNote?
Check Packard-Bell support to see if there are newer drivers for the card?

I recently bought a practically brand new HP LJ P1006 with an extra brand new HP brand toner cartridge for $1 at a local auction. I have tested it, and it works perfectly, so all is fine there. I would like to know if it is possible to print wirelessly to it at all. I do not have it hooked up to a computer right now, we only have two laptops, so there is not a desktop to have it hooked up to in order to put it on a home network (I believe that is how that works).

I do have a Netgear N300 router with a USB port however, and I was thinking I may be able to do something there.

Is it possible to hook this printer into my router via USB and then be able to print to it from our latptops? If so, how would we go about setting that up to do so? Thanks a great deal in advance for any help you may be able to offer!

We operate a home office network (workgroup) of 6 older PCs running Windows XP SP3.
It's a Windows based network using a designated "home" PC as a server, and until recently we were using ethernet cables and a hub/switch for sharing files which worked well because we only share small document files, no music or video.
The workgroup does not have a shared internet connection, we don't want or need one for what we do, although the individual PC's can connect to the web using USB dongles just for checking e-mail.
Recently the ethernet hub died and I decided to take the opportunity to upgrade to wireless file sharing.
None of the PCs have inbuilt wireless adapters so I bought a D-Link USB wireless adapter for each PC.
I also bought a Netgear N300 router, thinking that this was suitable entry level equipment for wireless file sharing. Now I'm not so sure.
So far I was unable to install the router on the "home" PC because the installation CD seems to assume that the router will be used for sharing an internet connection and does not seem to offer an installation option without a standalone modem. I searched the net but could not find anyone else asking this question of how to install this type of router to create a closed home wireless network without a shared internet connection. An enquiry e-mail sent to [email protected] has not been answered.
Have I purchased the wrong equipment or can I make this work?

Hi guys

Have often browsed this fount of knowledge without actually posting but now I am stumped and really need help...

I have recently moved house and had new broadband installed complete with new Netgear N300 router. Now I am unable to connect to the internet even though my desktop says it can see the wireless network (though it does say it is unidentified). The network connection diagram in Vista suggests the problem is between the internet and the router but I know this is not the case as I have successfully connected other devices via the wireless network. I know the router is N and the card is G but the router should still work with the older card, right?

I have tried to download the latest drivers from Belkin for a version 8 F5D7000 but for some reason they wont install (when I click on the install file it thinks for a second then does nothing). No idea why this is the case.

Could it be anything to do with the fact that the card, being older, is WEP and my router has no option for WEP, only WPA onwards? If so, would the latest driver from Belkin in effect 'upgrade' my card to allow it to carry same encryption as the router?

If I can't solve then I'll no doubt end up buying a new PCI card but I didn't want to have to bother right at this moment.

Any help would be fantastic!

Cheers

Matt

I have a Netgear wireless router - this model..
Answer

- it currently runs all my household connections very well, but I have a problem..

Currently the router software is set up via a laptop running Vista - this was done at initial install and I can't for the life of me, remember the password used..

I now want to remove this connection and software from the laptop and move it to another desktop PC running Windows 7

could someone explain the steps required, so that I may succesfully make this transfer to the new PC..

I still have the original set-up CD and user guide, etc

I understand that an ethernet cable connection must be made between the desktop and the router in order to facilitate initial set-up..

and I guess that somewhere along the way, I must reset the default password to the initial factory settings..

I'm a complete dunce when it comes to routers, the jargon puts me off - so a clear step by step guide to this process would assist me greatly, bearing in mind that I will be entering new passwords, upon completion of the switch over....

I recently moved to a new home and I set up my pc and the wireless adapter can't even see the wifi despite picking up my neighbours which have very weak signals.
My phone and my laptop both see it and connect with full strength.

What do I do?

Answer:Netgear N300 can't see wifi

Try the factory reset. There's a a small reset button in the back, press it down (sometimes you have to use a pen if it's one of those pin hole things) for about 5 seconds and that takes it back to factory settings. At that point you can either run the install CD that came with the router, or set it up manually from your browser.

Hi guys , i just want to make sure if i am doing it right before i try to reset my router to factory settings. The reason is that it is in a workplace and it runs with UBS accounting system which is connected to mutiple PC with Ethernet cable. And i want to make sure it doesn't affect the Accounting System after i reset the router to facotry settings.

So the question here is : Will it affect the system ? If i am not wrong , the system runs with IP address accordingly. Sorry i am not much a tech guy but yeah.

Alright, I'm running a WRT54G router using the DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) micro firmware that I installed a few days ago. This evening after I woke up, I was unable to connect over the wireless, so I jacked into the router and noticed that everything had been reset to default factory settings as far as I knew. There was a password set already.

Is it really possible for a router to randomly default settings or is it more likely that there is a human aspect of this issue? I live with three roommates and I know its very possible one of them knows how to use them.

Actually, now that I think about it, if the router had defaulted settings, they wouldnt have been able to connect.

Answer:Router Randomly Resetting Settings?

Create your own password, that know one knows. OR this could be a issue with defect fireware, I had dlink router before, and it used to keep reseting the time to the defaults. I hate GUI routers, I use cisco 875 broadband router much better with command line interface.

I'm continuing the closed thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1058039-netgear-n300-loses-wireless-connection.html

I have the same problem.

Mediacom is my cable provider. They came out a few months ago and thought the problem was their
Motorola modem. They replaced it with an RCA (Thomsen) which worked great for about 3 months.

Now (3/13) I am losing my connection at least once a day.

I started to download the new Netgear Firmware update, but in the middle of that, you guessed it, the connection dropped. So now my router is useless. There's probably a way to reset it, but I haven't found
that yet. And so far the Netgear phone # is locked inside the router somewhere!

I'm hard-wired to the RCA modem now, so we'll see. I have a feeling, after reading the previous thread,
that my connection will be fine.

Just in case, I have my own cable modem, needed for a previous cable provider, and a new Netgear N600 2-frequency router. I have a feeling one, the other, or my cable guy (on Saturday (( ) will fix
the WiFi portion of this problem.

Answer:Netgear N300 Loses Connection

Have you tried to find the recessed reset button on the router? It should be along the back near the power switch\port.

Hi Guys,

I'm having a weird problem and i'm utterly frustrated with it. Please help me fix this problem. Here's whats going on.

I have 5 computers at home. 1 desktop (wired directly from my router) and the others (1 desktop and 3 laptops) have wireless connection.

Recently my wireless connection is dropping frequently. This is the pattern i have noticed. It doesn't drop when i'm working on something or once its connected. But once i turn off all my computers it drops. But it doesn't drop all the time and is very random. Once one computer is connected all the others are working and when it doesn't connect, none of them works in spite of showing the name of my wireless connection in the available wireless connections list. And all of a sudden it'll start working again without me doing anything. Sometimes i'll restart the router or power cycle the modem and it'll work but there's no specific pattern. But the interesting thing is that my wired connection from my router is always connected and there's no problem whatsoever with that connection.

Please help me. I really don't know how to fix it and its very frustrating. My router is about 6 months old and i really don't know what to do. I have so many things but not getting any result.

Will eagerly wait for some response.

thanks in advance

i would reset the router to factory default and then reconfigure - see if that helps
Next
Look for a firmware update and install the latest firmware on the router
Next
See if you can get it replaced under warranty

lets see a xirrus and look at the wireless environment
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

I have a recently-purchased NetGear N300 wireless router. This router supports 4 wireless connections (2 desktop PCs, 1 laptop and one iPad2). The wireless router will drop internet connection on a daily basis require a reset. Interestingly, when MY internet connection (meaning all the PC supported on my wireless LAN) is dropped, the router can still see other wireless LANs...just no longer mine.

I reset the router on a daily basis and thereafter it runs fine for about a day...then another reset is required. I did do a firmware update and probably shouldn't have. I called the NetGear support people and their position is that it is NOT wise to do a firmware update. It appears that the routers are manufactured with a specific hardware/firmware combination and, unless instructed by NetGear, the firmware should be left alone. This is pretty much contrary to firmware updates on other products but they are very clear that in the case of their routers that this is the case.

The router was doing this before the firmware update so I'm not convinced that the firmware update is the culprit.

Anyway, if any other people have experienced similar circumstances to mine I'd certainly appreciate their comments. I like the N300 and it runs great...when it runs. It's just annoying to have to reset it on a daily basis.

When you installed the driver for your Netgear wireless adapter, did you download the latest driver from the Netgear's site?

Please provide an ipconfig /all for review.
Click on Start button then type cmd , see on the top right click on it and choose Run as Administrator. From the black screen, type the word ipconfig /all and press enter. Right click on the black screen or Command prompt then choose Select All and Paste the results on your next post.

Hi there,

Recently bought an N300 wireless adapter for my PC. I have a normal router which I usually connect to the internet using an ethernet. But sometimes I go wireless.

Initially it all worked wonderfully, without the ethernet my PC was able to pick up the wifi and I could browse, however, after about 5 minutes the bar graph in the bottom right hand corner gains a yellow triangle. Then limited access announces itself and soon enough no page loads at all.

The Netgear 'genie' doesn't show any problems with the connection, the problem seems to be noticed by the windows connection icon in the bottom right hand screen. If I try to reconnect I don't get given the network options I once had.

Hope the above makes sense...any ideas?

I work for a service provider and have had nothing but issues with these routers and only this model of Netgear router.

Customers buy them all the time because they are the cheapest router Wal Mart sells.

All of my DSL customers are connected to DSLAMs that are in layer 2 config. They are connected directly to a router that does the layer 3 DHCP server function. My modems are in bridge mode.

Yet every time a customer hooks up one of these routers the Netgear Genie thinks the router is connected to another router and turns it into an access point. My customers are only allowed 3 public IP address so you can see how this is a problem.

My question is why is it only the WNR2000 that does this? Literally every other router I've used does not do this including Netgears. They all detect the internet correctly and get a DHCP address and then pass private IP's to customer devices.

Any ideas? I'm about ready to just ban this router from my network and tell customers we don't support it.

Hello!

Someone I know has a Linksys WRT54GX V.2 (no WDS capability at all to my knowledge) and a Netgear N300 WNR 2000 V3 (with the repeater option). He wants to connect one to the internet in a home. The other would go out to his shop and he would like to get the internet out there too. He would also like to access the internet wirelessly with a laptop at either end. He has a wireless laptop setup and it works. The shop is line of sight with the home with no obstacles. A wire will not be able to connect one wireless router with the other due to terrain features. His laptop can get the internet from the Linksys (the Linksys is set up in the home) while he is in part of the shop, and he is trying to increase the range so that he can move to another part of the shop.

Would it be possible to do this with these routers? If so, which one should be physically (via wire) connected to the internet and which one should go out to the shop? I've been told that this Linksys model had good range. This Linksys model has three external antennas.

If it is possible, I can go ahead and start setting things up and trying to configure them.

Thanks for any advice and have a nice day.

Answer:Solved: Is it possible to connect Linksys WRT54GX V2 to Netgear N300 WNR 2000 V3 wire

I am guessing it all boils down to this question: Is it possible to connect a WDS equipped wireless router to a Non-WDS equipped wireless router wirelessly? The Non-WDS equipped wireless router MUST be connected to the internet (DSL) and an ethernet cable from the Non-WDS equipped wireless router is connected to the PC. Thanks for any advice out there. I'll still try to work the problem out. If I find out anything, I'll post it here.

My sister has just bought a DG834G wireles router and i have been trying to set it up for her but am having problems with the wireless settings. The problem is that when in the control panel (that's accessed via 192.168.0.1) there are NO Wireless Settings! There is the basic and adsl settings but nothing for wireless.I have set it up and the internet can be accessed ok, but we are trying to set it up so that a laptop can share the internet connection and files etc.I have the same router and my control panel shows the wireless settings! What do we have to do to get this up so we can configure/set it?Thanks.

Answer:Netgear DG834G Wireles Router - Settings Problem

I've got one of these. I think it's easier if you install the wireless cards in the various other computers and run the setup disk for the router last. It will detect the radio signals.there is a very good PDF for this router from netgear and well worth downloadingGood luckCD

Hi, i brought the BELKIN N300 Wireless N modem-router. I have a broadband connection which is a Ethernet cable(Picture included). The port doesn't fits to the routers internet connection input port. The input port is small(Picture included). What should i do? I can't return the device. Is there any way to make it work? There are 4 Ethernet ports which fits my internet cable fine. So can i use one of the 4 Ethernet ports as an input for the router?

My friend has 2 rental cottages and will be having internet access installed in one.

I believe being rural it is Fixed Wireless Network (Sat/4G?).

Anyways he want s both cottages to have some internet access but hope to implement password and bandwidth throttling.

I realize there are a few open source firmwares with these capabilities but KISS is the main objective and of course ... cheap.

My idea is to grab 1 or 2 Asus RT-N12. Not sure if the signal will be strong enough between cottages and may require a LAN line underground between cottages. The RT-N12 does multiple SSIDs so another plan is using one RT-N12 with a BOOSTER.

He basically wants to change the password weekly and be able to throttle the bandwidth so a cottage doesn't netflix all week.

If both cottages use the same power could I use a powerline connector to avoid the 100 ft conduit?

A perfect situation would be a powerful router with multiple SSIDs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Is a ASUS N300 RT-N12/D1, Wireless N Router what I need?

As far as signal strength, buy 1, check signal, see if it's strong enough before purchasing a second device. That's the simple part!

For bandwidth throttling, i'm unsure, I've read this router has QoS, but that they change the implementations between versions of the firmware. Even that said, from the demo setup I found, it's more a priority based QoS setup, then it is a throttle/limiting data usage setup.

A router capable of handling DD-WRT might be able to do it, or a computer running a router software that lets you limit the bandwidth of any given guest. Look for something that is about setting up public hotspots or such, since you could use those as ways to monitor usage, and see who is using it. Changing passwords seems a waste of time if he's remote enough that he has to use via satellite/4g. If he's in the middle of nowhere, I'd not be so concerned.

Hey,
was just wondering if anyone could help or has had similar dramas. Iv just bought a sitecom n300 router and I am in the process of setting it up. When it comes to enter the initial password my laptop is only letting me enter a max of 8 digits but the password I need to enter to set it up is 12 digits.
I may be being daft, unfortunately I am English and living in Germany and don't speak enough of the language to ask the guys in the shop, was wondering if anyone had any ideas why this is happening?!
cheers

Answer:problems with set up of sitecom n300 router

"When it comes to enter the initial password...."
Is that the password for the "admin" account that's used to log into the router? If so then are you entering the correct password? According to the user manual it should be on a sticker on the back of the unit. If that doesn't help then try a different web browser to connect to the router.
"my laptop is only letting me enter a max of 8 digits"
I'm not sure what that means - post a screenshot if you can to illustrate this issue. If you can't then it may help if you describe fully what's going on there.

Hi,
Windows 7 home edition, Talktalk internet. I am on a 8Mb package but line supports about 5.5Mb only.
I have a N150 wireless modem router and a N150 wireless adaptor. However, as the kids have got older so have the numbers of laptops, ipods etc all eating at the wireless signal. If I change to a N300 wireless modem router and N300 wirelss adapter for my pc I know the 5.5Mb down the phoneline won't change but will it increase the speed and strength of the signal within the house to all the wireless devices? Or will it be a waste of money?
Thank you

Answer:N150 to N300 modem wireless router

If you are only using it for doing anything over your Internet connection, then you will not likely notice any difference because more than likely your Internet connection from your ISP is WAY slower than anything your wireless connection can handle.
If you are using it for file transfers across your local wireless/wired network from computer to computer or other "local area network" traffic, then you might notice a difference depending on your network setup
In other words, if you are just doing Internet browsing, email, or other "downloads" from the Internet, then you likely will not notice any difference.
My opinion is that if all is working okay then leave it as it is.

First off hope this is in the correct forum, not sure if this fits better elsewhere.

I'll try to explain this as best as possible my situation. The apartment complex that I live in only has one option for internet for now. They call it a "wireless hotspot". I turn my laptop on and goto a website and it redirects me to the Onlyinternet.net logon page, I logon and surf the web. It is a 1Mb down connection mad. I was told I would have to buy a $70 device if I wanted a wired connection to my desktop. Instead I used Internet Connection Sharing on my laptop to my desktop. The speed loss was horrendous getting about 0.10Mbps on my desktop and 1Mbps on my laptop.

I also get ridiculous signal strength in my apartment, a mere one or two bars if I'm lucky. If I am outside it will jump to four. I have my laptop (A very old Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP Home 32-bit and my desktop is Windows 7 32-bit btw) next to a window in the hopes that it can catch a better signal but doesn't help. I've read that buying a router would be a better option over using ICS.

So over the weekend I went and bought a wireless router (NETGEAR N300 WNR2000v2) in the hopes that I can get it to connect to the wireless itself . It has a Wireless Repeating Function in the router settings but I am having issues getting it setup correctly and was hoping for a little better insight. The user manual doesn't explain the setup too well.

The plus so far, though, it increas... Read more

We have a 54g N150 ADSL modem, on Virgin National down a BT line in a rural location, getting about 2.5M
Using inSSIDer the signal is -60 in the same room as the router, -50 in the main living area of the house with 1 intervening wall but in further-flung rooms the signal is -30 and laptops there get cut off occaisionally.
Could anybody advise which of these give the best range:
Linksys X-1000
Netgear DGN2200
Asus N12UB1
TP-Link TD-W8961ND
Or a good mains plug in wireless booster.
I guess nothing will increase the download speed in our location?

Answer:N300 router or mains plug booster(s)?

In your situation, I would go for the homeplug option. I'd use a Tplink ethernet plug by the router and a wireless one in the other room. If you are a fair distance from the exchange, I doubt you could up the download speed.

Hi,

I recently bough a belkin router (Share N300) but it just wont connect to the internet.

My setup is as follows:
ADSL -> Modem -> Router -> PC

The internet works fine when I connect it directly to my PC (via the modem), and other PCs too.
So no issue of MAC address lockdown.

I've tried connecting through static mode with the data from ipconfig /all, but it still doesn't work.

I've even installed DD WRT and Tomato to no avail.

I've rebooted/reset everything, but theres still no connection.

Please help.
Thanks

If the modem is a modem only did you power cycle it when trying to connect the router and configure the router's WAN properly?

If the modem is really a modem/router combo is it and the Belkin using the same LAN IP subnet?

Hey guys. About 4-5 months ago me and the family got this fifty dollar router from Belkin, and at first it seemed alright. Right off the bat, the internet was slow, it was crappy, and I couldn't do anything on it. I called belkin support and they told me to just ship it in and they'll give us a replacement. So I got my replacement, and guess what, its the same exact crappy internet I had with the first one. I looked online for different tips at making it faster, such as changing its channel to either 6 or 11. I've tried both channels and my internet speed didn't change in the slightest. My videos don't buffer like they used to, to takes at least 3 minutes for the video itself to even load and show up on the damn page, pages take too long to load, and while I'm trying to view a picture it goes through this sequence of loading slowly from top to bottom as if I have a piece of crap PC from the 1990's or something. And it isn't just on my PC, it goes for my phone to. I connect to my internets WiFi and things are slower than when I had the damn Mobile Data on. My Mobile Data is over 90% now and I'd really like to have the WiFi so I don't have to pay a buttload extra just to watch a few videos when I don't have the PC. Is this the routers fault or am I being dumb? It ticks me off how I paid fifty bucks for this things and its a piece of crap. Hi all,

My Belkin N300 wireless router is now experiencing intermittent slow Internet speed. The router is 2 years old and has worked perfectly until last week.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I completed.

Internet speed test when directly plugged into the wireless router and cable modem: 30mbps
Internet speed using laptop wifi: 2 mbps then sometimes works at normal speed
Called ISP and they verified there was a connectivity to cable modem issue. Did a power cycle for modem and router. Then got full 30mbps from cable modem to ISP using direct connect to laptop.
tested other devices such as laptops and tablets, all experiencing intermittent slow speed
when experiencing slow wifi, switched to direct connect ethernet cable to router and got immediate full 30mpbs

So far all my testing is pointing to the Belkin router's wifi connectivity. I will check on the router's firmware since it has never been updated.
I also found a thread online suggesting disabling QOS on the router. But this should not be needed as it was working fine for two years since its purchase.

Any suggestions to what else I can do to resolve this issue?

I have a Embarq 660 Series modem, but i wanted wifi. so i bought a belkin N300 wireless router this morning. And it won't connect to internet. I'm pretty sure i've plug the cable in the right spot. And the EQ 660R ADSL router/modem is working. The belkin package came with a CD, and it's the setup program for the wireless router. but as it tried to form a connection, it said failed to connect to the modem. so does this means embarq 660 series isn't compatible with Belkin N300?

Answer:Solved: why can't my eq 660R ADSL router connect to Belkin N300?

I vaguely recall that the Embarq modem/routers default to the same LAN IP addresses (192.168.2.x) as the Belkin routers do. If this is the case to daisy chain the routers you need to change the LAN addresses of one of them (e.g., to 192.168.3.x).

Or you could use the Belkin as just an ethernet switch and wireless access point ...

Connect from the primary router... Read more

My mom has a Acer laptop and a Belkin n300 wireless router that she recently installed. Ever since she installed the belkin router she can only use the Internet for a short amount of time before she gets the blue screen. Other devices work fine on the wireless router (iPhone, iPod, iPad and Kindle Fire). Prior to the belkin she had another riuter and never got the blue screen. Any ideas of what might be causing this? Friend got a Linksys N300 (e1200) router (version 2). Asked me to set it up for him.

TLR - Admin Page is blank when visiting from his computers, yet my phone can bring it up just fine. Internet also works fine if Internet is connected to the router.

This seems to be on any computer on his network. All his computers are windows 8. I tried on his Laptop, and Desktop.

Steps I took on his laptop:
Powered on new router, did not plug in internet modem, disabled Wireless on his laptop, wired plugged laptop into router. ipconfig /release .... ipconfig /renew ... (default gateway: 192.168.1.1 , ip was 192.168.1.113 or some random number like that .. in the 192.168.1.x range)

I then went to 192.168.1.1. Blank Page.

It seems to redirect to 192.168.1.1:5200/Unsecured.asp?192.168.1.1 (I guess new linksys routers do that when the wireless network is unsecured? It seems to be a landing page where you verify that this is ok before redirecting you back to your original destination.)

I tried this on Chrome, Internet Explorer. Same thing.

I repeat this on his desktop. Same thing.

I do a ipconfig /dnsflush ... Same thing, but the redirect to the Unsecured.asp page no longer happens.

Cleared cache on browsers, blank page. rebooted computers, same thing.

I did a 30-30-30 hard reset on the router. Still blank page.

I plug the internet modem in for kicks (reboot modem, reboot router again). Internet works, still blank admin page (no surprise?)

I visit the page on my phone (connect to... Read more

Hi All,

I recently put in a Netgear firewall, configured it, its running no problem. Then I setup a new Netgear N600 wireless router, configured it, gave it a static IP, connected to it, works like a charm. Thing is, when I try to access the web gui I receive nothing.. Is the Netgear firewall taking priority or something? I went directly connected to the netgear wifi router and double checked to make sure that there was no settings restricting administration from wifi users, etc.. Anyone have a similar setup ?

Thanks All

You sure been busy! Have "seen" you all over this place.

Is the FVS318G router connected to the N600 router's WAN port or a LAN port?

If WAN have you changed one of the routers so that they don't both use the same LAN subnet (I didn't check each one, but they probably both default to the same).

If LAN have you disabled the N600's Dhcp server?

Should be easy!....
But I cannot get my NEW Netgear N600 router to communicate with a NEW Netgear WN 3000 RP extender.

The instructions say to press the WPS button on the extender then the WPS button on the router. No WPS button exists on the router!

The instructions also I can use any wireless network manager utility to set this up. Can't find where this is in Windows 7.

The I pad has found the NETGEAR_EXT address but won't connect. And the light on the extender does no indicate teh router is communicating with it.

Thought this process would be a simple plug and play, but...frustration!

Hooked up old Cisco and now it does not SEE the shared/router HD to Map.
Have tried Wireless, Wired, both routers and still Windows 7 can not see to map.

Both routers SEE the USB HD but neither PC/Laptop can.
Have turned off, Firewall, no Antivirus, etc.

Is it a OS issue?  Was working on the Linksys before I switch to the Netgear,  Both PCs mapped to the Linksys USB HD.
Nothing wrong with HD as directly attached to my desktop and now sharing the desktop so can see the HD now but prefer SHARING by mapping.

I have been trying to find a way to connect, forward the signal, recieve the signal from my Verizon Fios wireless router up to my WGT624 V3 Netgear router.

Is there a way that I can modify my wirless port on my Netgear to recieve a signal wirelessly from my Verizon Wireless router?

My Neighbor did it once with another wireless router, but he can not remember how he did it. I am thinking it had something to do with the Firmware.

If anyone can help me with this that would be great.

I'm basically trying to push the wireless signal from my Verizon router in my basement, up to my wireless Netgear router which is recieving the signal on the main level so that I can plug my wired (non wireless) laptop into the ethernet port which is receiving wireless signal from the Verizon router in the basement in order to gain access to the internet.

Can this be done with the equipment listed above and or some additional firmware and configuration?

Thank you for all your assistance on this in advance.

Hi everyone !

Last night I set up a home network for a friends house using a NETGEAR DG834G wireless router. The desktop is connected to the net through the ethernet cable no probs, and my laptop connects to the router wirelesly no problem in every room in the house.

Problem is my friends laptop which is a Compaq Presario (I forget model) cannot find the router. Instead it finds all the neighbour's routers ?!?!? even with the laptop sitting next to the router there is no detection. It is about one year old and running XP. On the Windows network setup it says the wireless chip on the Compaq is a Broadcom 802.116/g

I use Intel PROSet/Wireless to connect to it using my laptop, but my friends laptop has something called HP Wireless Assistant, which has basically no options other than telling you that the wireless technology is turned on.

I have turned off firewalls etc but it will not find the NETGEAR router ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

The easiest way is to run the CD that should have come with the Router, if you havent got it then you will have to configure it manually.

Full instructions can be found on the netgear website here.

So here is my case:

SETUP:

Verizon's Westell 6100:
Modem/Router, provides 1 incoming address (provided by VZ) and provides 1 internal address (192.168.1.1).

Netgear Wireless Router WGT624 v4:
Wireless Router, accepts 192.168.1.1 and provides 10.0.0.X wired and wirelessly.

Problem:
Although Verizon's Router indicates that it is on Bridge mode, the damn thing isnt. I thought the main concept of bridging was to become practically invisible and automatically reroute all traffic to the next device, which is what I want.
I want to ultimately use the Netgear device to set all my rules and settings, instead, I have to do it on both.
For instance, Xbox Live is not working 100% properly. I can only play video games without being able to join specific games, or perform any in-game video/voice chat.

I have tried NATing the device. No luck.
I have also tried setting the Netgear device as a Wireless Base Station. Either way, I just would like to have my network ignore 1 device, and have the second one invisibly reroute all the access.

Is that possible? Could you please help?

Thanks to all!

Answer:Netgear Wireless Router and Westell Modem + Router = Routed Bridge failure

Well, since the "modem" is supplying a private IP address, it's obvious that it's not in bridge mode, that can only happen with a NAT layer, aka a router.

Try this solution to configure it for bridge mode, direct from Verizon: http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/highspeed/networking/setup/questionsthree/123756.htm

I have Qwest/CenturyLink DSL, and recently replaced the Actiontec M1000 modem which crapped out after 5 years of service. Replaced it with a Netgear DM111PSP v2 router/modem. Now I cannot get either of my two routers, the Linksys WRT54G or WRT160N V2 to broadcast wireless internet. I've spent the most time on the WRT160N. It will broadcast a wireless signal, but devices that attempt to connect to the internet time out while "obtaining IP address". BTW, I just happen to have two wireless routers on hand, I only need one to work.

I can get internet through the hard wire connection. I have the Netgear modem hooked up to the "internet" port of the WRT160N router, and the computer is connected to one of the four ethernet ports on the back of the router. I can access both router and modem setup pages using this setup. The Netgear modem is set up for DHCP server, PPPoA encapsulation, and gets its DNS address dynamically from the ISP. The WRT160N is also set up for automatic DHCP configuration. These are the settings given by running each set up wizard, and this has set me up for some DHCP conflicts.

I think that setting up a dual modem/router in transparent bridging mode (PPPoE) in theory turns off the DHCP, allowing the WRT160N to handle DHCP, but I have no luck even getting my hard-wired internet connection to work if I switch from PPPoA to PPPoE mode. Even if I cut the WRT160N out of the loop and connect the computer direct to the DM111PSP. No internet,... Read more

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together

Hi,
I own a business that offers free Wi-Fi to customers. Originally I had the blue linksys wireless G router hooked up to the booster on the roof. At another location, I just got a Netgear wireless N router, and that worked way better than the linksys. So I got another Netgear router, and installed it in the first location- but I'd like to hook it up to the booster. The guy at Fry's said that the Netgear router will not hookup to the booster- I'd have to hook the Netgear to the linksys, disable something on the linksys, and then the linksys to the booster.
So, my question is, how do I do that?

Thank you very much!

After a series of computer and network failures, mostly due to electrical storms and electrical contractors, I decided to upgrade my old Netgear router to a new Netgear Wireless-N router.

I have used Network Magic to manage my networked computers and when I decided to upgrade NM, the new version didn't support my old router. So, it seemed like an all over upgrade/update was in order.

What should have been a simple process-- turn everything off, disconnect the old router, replace it with the new router, and go through the set up process (cable modem on, then router on, etc.) has turned into a mystery.

I used the Netgear startup wizard, followed step by step (more than once) and each time I got to the last part of the process, it stalled saying "No Router Found."
It was only after several unsuccessful attempts, that I decided to open my control panel and check things out. Network Connections showed my status as "connected," so I opened my browser and found that I am able to connect to the internet.

What I have not been able to do is to set up my network, network security, etc. I tried to initiate Network Magic for set up, with the same results-- "no router found."

Anyone know what I have going on here? Am I only connected through the LAN connection, perhaps?

To make matters further complicated, my phone service is Vonage, VOIP, and the Vonage device has failed, so I'm waiting for the new one to arrive...can... Read more

I am looking to get my two computers on my very small network to communicate more quickly. I have updated to gigabit network cards in both and am now adding a Netgear gigabit router. My thoughts are: connect each computer to the LAN of the Netgear router via Ethernet 5E cables, connect the netgear router to the Verizon modem/router via Ethernet cable in the WAN ports, and leave the Verizon modem/router as it is. Might this work? Is it all plug and play? Will I have to make any changes in my settings, if the Verizon modem is alresy up and going? Thanks so much for any feedback.

Hi,
I've got an annoying problem with my Wi-Fi settings in Windows 7.
Recently I got myself a wireless D-Link router and a Realtek USB Wireless adapter for my PC. I had a bit of a problem setting it up due to annoying WEP/WPA keys and then I found the ASCII key option and got it working. However Windows 7 seems to forget the settings for my wireless connection every time I restart the computer(wrong security setting and old WPA key that doesn't work anymore because I changed it). So I guess it keeps going back to the settings I had previously. How do I get it to remember my working settings? I've already ticked that checkbox "Connect automatically" in the connection settings but that did nothing. Is there some sort of way of tricking it into remembering my new settings? It's just a hassle having to set it every time I start Windows.

Answer:Wi-Fi settings keep resetting

I don't have a computer with wi-fi with me right now but the procedure is very similar in Windows Vista. Go to the Network and Sharing and on the left-hand side, click on "Manage Wireless Networks". After that, remove any networks in the preferred list by clicking on each one and removing them. After that, you should be able to click on "Add" and then click on "Add a network that is in range of this computer and follow the steps in the wizard to connect.

If however when you go to "Manage Wireless Networks", you don't see a preferred list of any kind, then please provide a screenshot of it because as I said, I don't have access to a computer with wi-fi right now.

Answer:Resetting a lop top to factory settings

@Char-Lee Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! If Vista is what came preinstalled on this laptop, then the general way is to press  F11 while rebooting and when the HP Recovery Manager starts up, select the option to do a factory reset. IF that doesn't work, that means your Recovery partition has been corrupted and you would have to use HP Recovery Media disks to do that -- but HP does not stock Vista recovery media anymore.Since  HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you should check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/Before using the media, read through this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110Good Luck

Hey everyone,

I am having some trouble with my computer at home. It's my mothers 200(3?) Dell dimension desktop: old pentium 4, 256 MB of RAm, integrated intel chipset video card. My aunt messed with the display settings and got it stuck on 640 x 480 and so I followed the troubleshooting directions to fix the resolution. I set it to 1024 x 768, 8 bits of color, and was prompted to reset.

Here's where the trouble begins: after the bios startup and the windows xp loading screen I am getting no display. I can hear the start up tone and can see the processor working, but have no display. In order to troubleshoot I have tried resetting, loading in safe mode (didn't load), toggling video from automatic to onboard, as well as flushing the CMOS by removing and resetting the battery. Any suggestions that would not involve reinstalling windows? All I think I need to do is reset the display settings without entering windows.

Thanks!

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. Whenever I shut it down and restart, the desktop settings get reset. For example, there's a Touch Keyboard option on my taskbar and I choose to remove it. I right-click the taskbar>properties>toolbars>uncheck touch keyboard
After a restart, it comes back. How do I keep that from happening?

Answer:Desktop settings keep resetting.

Hi,

This seems like quite unusual behaviour, it is most likely caused by some setting by one of the manufacturer's programs.

You might want to look firstly in the programs installed already by toshiba for the preference that is casuing this, otherwise, a quick fix that may help in your situation would be to just prevent the adding/removal of toolbars.

Beforehand, adjust the toolbar's to the way you want them, with the one you dont want removed. After that, proceed with the steps below.
Search > Right Click gpedit.msc > Open it
In the Local Group Policy Editor. Go to the following directory: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop
Once there find the option called  "Prevent adding, dragging, dropping and close the Taskbar's toolbars".
Right click this option and click edit
Click the enable checkbox and click ok
That toolbar should no longer appear after restart. If you need to add or remove a different toolbar in the future, just disable, make the changes and re-enable.

Hope this helped.

OK, so I have a question guys. Over the last few weeks I've became a Pro with lots of things, I know more about RAM, CPU's and overclocking then I ever have. and I know more about Overclocking on Nvidia boards then the average person by a long shot. lol. I'm finally stable. but I keep having all my settings get reset.

Here's my problem. I have my PC set so that It does NOT require a password when it Wakes, only on boot. but every few days it resets and starts asking for a password. also i have the power settings so that the display turns off after 30 minutes, and the PC goes to sleep after 45 mins. But that auto;s back to 20 minute display and sets to NEVER sleep.

I have a theory, it's probably a pretty good one, and very possible. but I'm not sure. I know these somewhat advanced machine's us people call computers have a thing where they remember stuff (LOL)
So should it be remembering it. Or is it VERY much possible that all my different settings, and trial and error of overclocking, and the often times I overdue it and my system Crashes. Is this whats causing all these settings to get messed up. I overclock it, or it crashes during a Prime95 test or something. that could be it, not sure tho.

I did try for 3.8 GHz a few days ago and it froze, I had to hit cmos reset. that probably killed all my settings, but I've only done that once. So whats with all the other times. So is it possible that all these crashes have been changing my settings, or should they not be getting ... Read more

Answer:Settings in Vista keep resetting.

I would say its very possible that when your crashing, somehow your settings are going back to default. Sure as heck don't know why, but computers never seem to stop coming up with new issues. Comes with the territory I guess.

Answer:Resetting PC to factory settings

They might have come with built-in factory recoveries. When you boot up - do you see anything about a recovery process or anything similar? Most times they will give you an option at start up. Also, look in My Computer and look for a partition about recovery.

PC's may have came with recovery disks too.

If you are unable to find anything like that - you can wipe out the PC using DBAN (link available in my signature). Keep in mind, this will wipe out everything on the hard drive. So you will have to reinstall Windows.

is there a way to do this? i messed with some settings and now music won't come out of my laptop speakers, just headphones.

Answer:Resetting default audio settings?

You have probably made your headphones default, and turned off the speakers.
In the taskbar, near the clock, right-click on the speaker icon. Choose 'Playback devices'. In the new window, do you see 1 or 2 items? Speakers and below that Speaker/headphones. Right-click on what is showing, and in the list tick the options, 'Show disabled devices' and 'Show disconnected devices'.
Now you should have 'Speakers' line showing, so right-click on it, and choose 'properties'. At the bottom of the box, you see a drop-box that gives 2 options. Make it to be 'Use this device-enable'. Click OK. That should work.

I have no idea why but I for some reason the settings I apply to specific folders have been getting reset at seemingly random times.

By folder settings I mean sorting options mostly. I have to frequently re-select my pictures folder to have the option to sort by 'date created' and then select it. It keeps defaulting back to sorting by name. almost all folders have the same problem! it also keeps defaulting back to the "details" option for all folders when they were originally "thumbnails"

Answer:folder settings randomly resetting

Ok, here's the trick

Navigate to each of the special 'My' folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos) under your user profile

Arrange those folders just how you like them, columns shown, column position, any personalized view, sort, group you decide. These act as templates for every folder of that type (Document/General, Music, Pictures, Videos).

If you have mixed types in 'typed' folders, Windows sometimes gets confused. You might try opening any folder, pressing Organize (top left), press the view tab, and press Reset Folders.

My computer has become riddled with viruses, some that i know of include a bunch of browser takeover ones that i have tried to get rid of but keep popping up. Whenever i run Security Essentials and MalwareBytes i get lots of stuff popping up and i remove it. My computer has become very slow and annoying to use, so i want to reset it back to factory settings.

Here's my problem though, i dont have any system restore points set up when i got it, i was young and naive, and i dont have the disks anymore to reinstall. I don't care about my files, they can all be wiped, i just wanna have a smooth operating computer again.

I would love any suggestions or tips on how to resolve this issue.

My mobo is a Phoenix/Trigem, according to what it had said before. I wish I could be more specific, but seeing as I can't do anything with that computer at the moment, that's all I know. Help!

Also, if someone could help with my video card trouble. Now, if I don't have the card in, I get the above. if I DO put the card in, however, (GeForce FX 5200 PCI 256MB) It boots, but I can only see the mouse cursor on a black screen, and none of my keyboard commands work. If anyone could help me with either/both troubles, I would be very gracious, one gamer to another.

Answer:Need help resetting Jumper/BIOS settings

In order to reset your cmos you need to do one of two things.

Either use the jumper on the mobo you mobo book should tell you how to do this or take out the cmos battery for about 20 seconds being careful only to hold the battery by it`s edges not top and bottom then put the battery back in and reboot your bios should now be at the default settings.

You may need to go into your bios in order to reset some of your settings.
