Preferred Solution: Error Message "tss.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" - please help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello!

I have been getting a really annoying error lately every time I reboot.

The error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" appears a few minutes after start-up.

I click "To see what data this error report contains, click here." and it shows this:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: ws2_32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0000664d

I have run Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware Professional and Trend Micro OfficeScan but i still get the problem whenever I restart my computer.

Although my windows seems to be working properly after I click "don't send report" (due to restore settings?), the error message annoys me every time i restart my computer.

What shall I do to repair the problem? Please let me know if you need my HJT log. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

Hi all,
I am a total Newbie so please have patience with me.
I am working mostly with Mozilla Firefox, but occasionally I go into Internet Explorer as I have got a website and it does display it different sometimes in IE than with Mozilla.
I have noticed recently that when I open IE everything seems to work fine first (the home page comes up and looks alright), but as soon as I enter anything in the search bar on the top and hit "enter", I have got this message coming up:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
With the Mozilla Firefox Browser everything seems ok.
Why is that, and how can it be fixed?
When I go in ->My Network Places ->View Network Connections, I have got LAN or High-Speed Internet, and there are 2 connections mentioned:
Local Area Connection2, which says: (Network Cable Unplugged, Fire...Intel(R) Pro/100 VM Network...)
Local Area Connection, which says: (Connected, Firewalled, Motorola SURFboard SB5100)
I don't know whether that has anything to do with it, but I thought I mention it.
The same problem happens when I want to use a Software I have downloaded, called "Directory Submitter", every time I want to use that the same message appears, just as "Directory Submitter has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.". I can just assume that Directory Submitter connects through Internet Explorer and that's why t... Read more

Answer:Message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close."

First, you did not state what version of IE you use, IE6 or IE7; and what OS, WinXP what (Pro/Home, SP2/SP3).

Second, why Firefox? Do you really need it? I ask because there are reported problems with conflicts between IE and Firefox by some users. These seem to be reported by people like you who try to use both browsers. People who use Firefox exclusively, don't see the problem.

I assume your are in business and that's why you use Directory Submitter. By the way, is it from the .COM or .ORG site? You use it as PR for a WEB site you publish, correct?

I posted this in the XP forum and was directed here, so I'll just paste my post from there. I will also include all logs the sticky reccomends.

I'm getting this error message on 90% of programs I try to open. But if I keep trying it will eventually open. It doesn't happen on chrome/firefox, thankfully.

Another problem that I believe is connected to it is that I can't open a browse window. On photobucket for example I'll click "browse" and it won't open. But if I restart the browser a few times it will eventually work, just like the problem above. I had some sort of worm on my computer earlier this month. I removed it and since then ran multiple more scans (malware anti-bytes) and nothing new comes up.

Any help will be appreciated. I know this will be hard to diagnosis, but maybe the problem with the browse window might help narrow it down? It's the first time I've ever heard of that problem occurring.

Thanks.

Answer:"encountered a problem and needs to close" error messages, Can't open programs

Please avoid using IE as it only works if you purchase it and that too if its under warranty, else it might throw some or the other errors. Instead, you can try Google Chrome which never give you this sort of problem.

I've been getting the error "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" spasmodically ever since I got my computer, about 2 years ago. It might go a couple of weeks in between errors but recently it's become something like every day or two. Perhaps this coincides with me getting my computer on the net. The screen shows only the wallpaper for a moment then the system comes back on with a few things missing form the system tray, though this may be an effect rather then a cause.

The error did not go away when I reinstalled windows.

Anyway here's a list of the error signatures it gives:

Error: "In explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" after opening any folder on the network
I reinstalled the PC and the (roaming) profile is reset. (deleted and recreated)
Unfortunately, the error remains. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Joost,

I always have issues with roaming profiles! But in a nutshell, if it's not the roaming profile, it must be the PC image - Do you have a similar PC to test it on?

Best, Crit.

I am getting the (program) "has encountered a problem and needs to close error report with a number of programs on my PC."

It started with Outlook (2003) then Sony Media Manager and now Mailwasher Pro. I can use Outlook to send and receive messages OK and the error only appears as Outlook is closing down. My Mailwasher Pro update won’t run at all and produces the error report when I try to run it.

In the last couple of weeks I have tried to download a number of programs, some install and run OK and some produce the above error report when I try to run them.

I was able to download, install and run Media Monkey and Anvir Task manager OK. The problem seems to be with some problems and not others.

The nearest event I can think of that coincided with the start of this problem was the installation of a program called Evernote which I have since uninstalled.

Extra info: I HAVE used Black Vipers site to alter my system services and I do use Revo uninstaller to uninstall unwanted programs.

My system is Windows XP sp3

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Hello Everyone,

I am having the exact same problem as the person below had and I am hoping someone could please help me:

EvoN10: When I log on to aim my buddy list shows up but as soon as I open a message window I get a message that says AOL Instant Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I don't know if this matters or not, but it has happened w/ Internet Explorer as well and Norton Antivirus. But only a few times. It happens to AOL IM everytime. Also, I JUST got my computer and one of the first things I tried to do was go on AIM so I don't know how I could have aquired a virus in that short of a time.

I am not sure why this is happening but I saw in a reply to download Hijack This, scan and save to a log file. So I did that. And I was wondering if someone here could please look at it and tell me where to go from there. If that's not what I need to do, then please tell me what I should do. Anyway, here is my HJT log. I greatly appreciate anyone who can help me!! Thanks so much!!

Hi lola678

I think your AIM problem might be more related to Earthlink TotalAccess.

But let's do some cleanup and see what happens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
You'll need to disable SpySweeper's realtime protection while we run these fixes.

* Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
Exit the program.

You can re-enable these when we are finished here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

R3 - URLSearchHook: ScriptInocUI Class - - (no file)

If that doesn't help with AIM...then it's probably Earthlink TotalAccess.

In that case, deselect the "Use Earthlink Search Service" optio... Read more

Here's a little background on my system:

There are 5 users on the computer. Of course, I usually log on with my own account.

However, since 2 days ago, everything has literally started to fall apart. First of all, when I log in, it ATI gives me a messaging say that "The Command Line Interface has encountered an error and has to close." Then a short while after, it would say "Windows explorer has encountered an error and has to close.", even though I was not even using windows explorer.

From then on, any program I would try to use such as Internet Explorer would suddenly freeze and encounter an error. Even when I open MSN Messenger, I get the message "MSN Messenger has encountered an error and has to close.". Any other program I open results in the same sort of error messages and eventually my computer locks up. When I press ctrl-alt-delete, it says that the CPU usage is enormously high (99%-100%) even when I have NO programs open.

The strange thing is that after I log off and go on any body else's Windows XP account, there are absolutely no problems at all.

I am currently scanning my computer for viruses, but none have turned up yet.

Can anybody shed any light on my situation, and why only my account is fatally glitched? I feel extremely helpless and frustrated.

Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it!

I guess that I have some kind of malware or other problem. In nearly every program, from Microsoft Works, to Internet Explorer, I am recieving messages to the effect of "such and such has encountered a problem and needs to close." In addition, my Iolo System Mechanic scans will not scan the whole way through, they encounter an error. System Mechanic is also prompting me to download the same version update that I have already downloaded- 7.1.12- every single time I turn on the computer. I am also encountering a plethora of "dll" errors, often when I try to shutdown the computer. The "unknown file in winsock" looks suspicious but I don't know what to do about it. The computer overall is not operating that slowly.

Hello,

there is no clear malfunction, just one or two unexplained new error messages. I would appreciate any advice.

I'm using a Dell laptop running Win XP, using Kaspersky Internet Security.

I do a lot of (amateur) photographic work using Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 as well as a U.S. version of Adobe Photoshop 6.0. Also, I have had the laptop lcd monitor calibrated using Spyder 3.0 over a month ago because I want reasonable colour consistency between display and prints.

For that reason I am concerned that in the last week this message appears after any restart:
Adobe Gamma Loader has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Calibration did make a visible difference to colour display and since this error shows up I do not see any big difference in colour but the message is still a concern.

Could be related: I think this may have started happening after my Nikon photo browser ViewNX started crashing recently in the same way i.e. "ViewNX has encountered a problem and needs to close." For ViewNX that problem still happens after I did an uninstall, and reinstall latest version from Nikon. (Before that reinstall I had to also get latest Windows upgrades to SP3, and got upgrades for .NET and many others at the same time. But the original problem was before the upgrades.)

Web enquiries so far reveal that Adobe Gamma Loader.exe can be a TROJAN (esp. if the .exe resides in Startup folder) but in my case it looks legit because it exists as a shortcut i... Read more

If anyone knows how to get windows media player 9 to run, I would appreciate the advice. I have version 6.4.07.1121. I downloaded Media Player 9 (for Windows 98 SE) and went through the installation process, but when completed with the install, a dialog box opens up saying "Microsoft Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The error signature is as follows:

AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2980 ModName: oleaut32.dll
ModVer: 2.40.4518.0 Offset: 0006ac21

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. I cannot update my current version (6) from its update feature( it says there is no update available , when I tried), but version 6 still works...only I have to go into the program file where it is and open it there.

Hi,

I get this blue screen and my laptop reboots. This occurs very frequently at times and at times the laptop runs smoothly and all of a sudden reboots.

I get this error message "IEEE802.11b WLAN Card Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close".

It started occurring ever since i have replaced the LINKSYS WAG54G router with a new version.

I have contacted Linksys several times but they just dont have a solution to this problem. They even got me to download new drivers for the router.

The funny thing is whenever i use a different router or a wired router this problem does not occur.

Linksys has suggested i update my wireless drivers by downloading new drivers from the laptop manufacturers website. I am not too sure if i should be taking this route.

Would anyone know why this problem is occurring.

Regards,

Jewan

IE8 has been working ok since I installed it about a month ago. On Monday morning it started failing at various places around the internet :-

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience".

As the day progressed 2 other Microsoft applications began exhibiting the same error. Money (Money Plus Deluxe) fails immediately on startup with the above message and fails every time.
Explore.exe also does the same thing, but behaves more like IE8 - it starts up ok every time, but will fail occasionally in diiferent folders. When it fails it causes DRWatson to fail as well.

Ran Malwarebytes and Mcafee scanners and no virus/malware was identified. Ran SFC/Scannow but nothing resulted.

Currently using Firefox without any issues, but I'd like to get the issue fixed as I really need Money working.

Thanks

Hi all,

I've been getting the

"<program or file name> has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

error very frequently now with every new prog I try to install but noticed that its mainly new progams downloaded that won't install. The same message appears regardless whether I reboot and install. Tried recently to install:

Live MSN Messenger 8.0 after downloading all 15Mb of it from the MS site and then the dreaded error appears!

Can someone please help me determine what's causing this hiccup and why?

Am using an AMD Athlon 1800+ 298MhZ based Sony Vaio with 256Mb Ram running XP home ed. SP1.

Appreciate any pointers or solutions....Gracias!

Your log appears clean. Does the issue appear in safe mode? Please boot into safe mode and see if you still get the error. If not....open your "Event Viewer" in Admin control panel and see what error is being displayed and what file it's faulting.

I'm receiving an error message: "Google Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close" and "View Mgr has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages. Additionally, my google chrome started crashing frequently.

Also, just a few hours ago I returned to my computer and it sounded like a radio talkshow broadcast was playing in the background.

Having issues with this system. Whenever I click on the X to close an IE window, this error message comes up:

If you were in the middle of something, the info you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Internet Explorer.....etc..

Answer:"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Figure out what nydll.dll is - everything I can see in a quick cursory Google search says it's spyware/trojan stuff, so... get your system checked out thoroughly, fast.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com might help but, if the damned thing is infecting you seriously it might not even work.

You might consider getting this also:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1375718

And using it to scan your machine outside of running Windows and see what gives.

hi

i have windows xp with service pack3.

all of a sudden today when i went to play a movie on media player 11 it said "data execution prevention" so after a little bit of googling i disabled it.

hoping my problem goes away but a new problem arises if i open it via a movie it says "windows explorer has experienced a problem and need to close" and simultaneously "windows media player has experienced a problem and needs to close", but when i play songs via media player it works flawlessly.

all this problem started when i downloaded a version of prison break and attempted to play it. checked the folder for anti virus using kaspersky internet security and it showed no virus. if i would open the folder it would show "windows explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close"
so fearing a virus i deleted the whole folder still to no avail and still facing the problem.

please help.

I am running windows XP (have been for about 4 years!) and about 2 years ago I got MS Office XP prof edition. Yesterday, all of a sudden outlook stopped working. Every time I try to open it, it comes up with "Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close" with a tick box asking if I would like to re-open Outlook. If I try this the same thing just keeps happening.

I haven't installed anything new or made any system changes recently. I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling, I have tried the Office XP Repair and Detect function still with no joy. I have also tried creating a new profile and running outlook through that, but exactly the same thing happens.

The only way I can run it is in safe mode.

Any ideas would be much appreciated as this is driving me crazy!!!

Answer:"Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

This issue continues to be problematic for many users. One fix that seems to eliminate or reduce the frequency of the error is to open windows explorer, click tools, click folder options, click view, then check the box beside 'launch folder windows in a separate process', then click OK. This was a fix I discovered back in 2005 from a responder in the MG support forum. I've become more savvy now at configuring and selecting settings for my WinXP system and seldom see this issue...even with the box unchecked. I'm not sure the error can be permanently eliminated. Someone higher in rank might want to confirm my post.

I'm receiving an error message: "Google Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Also, audio advertisements keep playing in the background. I have been stopping them by ending the process iexplorer.exe from my Task Manager.

I also tried downloading Malwarebytes and ComboFix. When I tried to install either, the installation failed. Malwarebytes failed when the installation was unpacking files. ComboFix seemed like it never began. When I opened my taskmanager, the programs were running, but neither would actually appear.

I also have an older version of Malwarebytes on my desktop from a previous issue. That also would not start.

Below is my HiJackThis log and GooredLog. That is all that would fit in my initial post, so I'm going to reply with my GMER results. Would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

Help please. I was on AOL when all of a sudden my pages stopped loading. I still have access to my email and I can IM people. I checked my IE and the pages loaded halfway, now they won't load at all I keep getting a message saying "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Oddly enough the one page I can get to load is my login for my bank account...hmmm..suspicious much?? For a little while I had my MSN browser then that stopped working too. I ran all types of spyware scans, it found a few things but still hasn't fixed the problem. I know one thing I had was midaddle, I saw it on my list of programs, but after I ran the adaware and spybot it disappeared off that list so I assumed it was uninstalled. I had my mom send me the file to install the firefox browser, and so far I've had that for few days and it's working fine. However I still have no access to IE and my AOL is still not loading pages, although like I said I can still read my email and IM people. I followed all the steps in the thread to remove spyware except the online scans because it's telling me I need IE version 4 or above to run them, and when I try to download it tells me I have a newer version already installed on my machine. What is going on?? What can I do??? I'm so computer illiterate it's not even funny. Please help!

Answer:IE will not load keeps saying "has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Skip the online scanners for now and complete all the other steps in the order given. Then continue to follow the steps below exactly as written if you still have problems.

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Yesterday I tried to open Internet Explorer and before anything had loaded I got the error message that Internet Explorer encountered a problem and needs to close. I get the same message for Windows Media Player (although even with the message the songs still come through) and trying to dispose of objects in Malwarebytes. After doing some research and looking in system32 I found out I have Bankpatch. Does anyone know how I can get rid of it? Is that what's causing all of my programs to "experience problems" at critical times?

Someone please help . I keep getting the error message "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close", whenever I open up firefox, iexplorer, or even adaware. It's happening with most my programs.. Sometimes it happens immediately after opening the program, and sometimes it takes a while.I ran a virus scan with AVG, but no viruses were detected. I use Windows XP media center edition SP2. My computer is a Gateway GT4024.

I've also been having problems with the audio. At times it works, and others it doesn't. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Answer:"Program has encountered a problem and needs to close"

On maybe a related topic, my audio isn't working at all now. My default audio device seems to be missing. I think it's supposed to be Realtek HD Audio. When I check it under device listing, it says it's working properly. I have no clue.

Hi.

I have encountered this problem when trying to install Microsot Office 2000 Premium into my Windows XP Home OS, the error message is "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Anyone have any idea how to resolve it???

Thanks.

Answer:"msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."

msiexec.exe is a Windows Installer Component and is used to install new programs that use Windows Installer package files (MSI).

Have a look at this previous thread HERE which relates to a similar problem trying to install Microsoft Antispy.

Hey friends. It was suggested by Dave T. that I post my log file here, so here goes. I'm usually pretty crafty, but this time I'm stumped as to what is going on. I have posted this elsewhere, and gotten not one single response, so I'm really hoping here! My problem started out of nowhere. It didn't coincide with any software or hardware installation. I have run many virus/malware/spyware programs and come up with nothing. The symptoms...are hard to pin down. When it happens, everything starts acting crazy. It usually starts with a "rundll as an app has encountered a problem", or a PML driver with the same problem. Than all the programs start acting crazy. Nothing wants to load w/o encountering a problem. Than it locks up. I saw a fix, but it only seems to work temporarily. It is as follows:

Go to C:\Windows\system32\wbem\Repository
and delete all contents. Than restart.

It seems to work for a couple of hours. Than it comes right back. I'm totally at a loss as to what is going on. So as a last resort, I'm hoping you beautiful, wonderful, kind, brilliant people can help me.

Posted below is my logfile. Looking forward to your assistance. Thank you much!

Up front: Fujitsu Lifebook, Windows XP Tablet Edition

This is an error I have encountered in WMP and IE, so I am hoping that by solving it in IE, I can solve it in WMP; hence posting it in the IE sub-forum.
===================

Okay, so a few days ago, I started getting this error message with Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. I have done full virus scans, come up clean. For whatever reason, only these two programs have been affected as far as I can tell.

It is the standard "ProgramX has encountered a problem and needs to close...etc...Send error report?"

Every time I try to open IE/WMP, I get this message a few seconds after the program has opened.

For Internet Explorer:
Error Signature:
AppName: iexplore.exe ApVer: 7.0.6000.16762 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 982a2dc1

Also, theres a whole mumbo-jumbo of stuff contained in a text file in Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp.

For WMA:
WMA I am having more difficulty with. I first discovered the problem on WMA, and later in IE (I use firefox regularly), and so attempted to resolve the WMA issue by uninstalling WMA 11, then re-patching up to 11. However, now my WMA is stuck at the configuration steps (WMA 10 also got the error, for what it's worth)

Error Signature:
AppName: setup_wm.exe AppVer:11.0.5721.5146 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 982e6909

Can a moderator please move this to a more generalized forum, as the problem might be larger than just IE/WMP? Thanks.

For several weeks now, I've been getting this errror using both of my browsers: MSN and IE. I've removed and re-installed both several times, and finally re-formatted my entire hard drive and re-installed everything. This looks to have possibly solved it for IE (hasn't crashed, yet, but it's been less than a day), but MSN still will not let me use it for more than a few minutes!

I'm using Windows XP, and the exact error is the generic:

"MSN (or IE) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve. We wll treat this data as confidential and anonymous." . . . etc.

Please help!

Answer:"MSN has encountered a problem and needs to close."

What are your PC specs?

We are sorry for the inconvenience." Occasionally the viewer loads allowing me then to update it successfully, but it then displays the same message when I again run it and crashes whether I choose to send an error report or not. I know the program will run because of it allowing me to update and control it occasionally. But if I try and close the error message, the program always crashes. I have gotten the same "encountered a problem" message from a few other windows diagnostic programs while trying to fix the problem myself if that gives any clues.

Obviously reloading XP is one idea, but I just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas what could be causing this problem since all other games, online and not, work fine. Thanks.

Answer:"...encountered a problem and needs to close..."

G'Day electric...Welcome to TSF!

You might like to try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD; should this happen, just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc it running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs open, on the computer until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Post back with the results, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

I keep getting "xyz has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

This started a year ago but it was very rare. Nowdays I can not keep any programs open for more then a couple of minutes before I get the dialog that the program has performed an illegal operation and needs to close” Its sooo annoying. I ran Norton and found no virus, I ran ad-aware and Spyboot and cleaned all the spyware but nothing. Here is the hijack log if it helps:

No matter what I try and run, it "... encounters a problem and needs to close". I downloaded and installed Mozilla's Firefox which is opening so I can get on the internet. Also I have installed Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus which has scanned, found, and removed 8 "viruses/spyware/adware". Also installed, and ran HiJackThis and that runs and scans fine (log below).

It seems as though everything was messed up with something that AVG found and removed, and nothing wants to open even still. However, everything that I have installed from the "clean point" on seems to work fine.

*Edit* : Included in things I'm not able to open are certain Control Panel icons (Administrative Options will open but nothing else in there [services, components etc..], User Accounts also won't open, and a few others, Add/remove programs opens and operates fine)

I too have loaded Windows XP (Pro) onto my Mac Pro and have gotten Counter Strike, Vanguard, and Neverwinter Nights to work just fine. It seems we are having the exact same problem.

I might note that before installing PlayOnline and Final Fantasy XI I ran the FFXI Benchmark 3 program receiving a score of 8284 for low resolution and somewhere near 6000 for high. The highest score the FFXI website talks about is as follows:

"7000 or above: We assume that your computer can run FINAL FANTASY XI for Windows excellently with the default settings. If your video card exceeds the recommended system requirements, we recommend that you try out various configuration settings of FINAL FANTASY XI for Windows."

Invigorated by the successful benchmark run, I installed PlayOnline and Final Fantasy XI using my old copies of Final Fantasy (with Rise of Zilart expansion) and the Chains of Promethia expansion. When I treid to load PlayOnline occasionally it would sometimes run without a hitch or fizzle off after an attempt at starting. More often, I got an error message telling me PlayOnline has encountered a problem and needs to close. The interesting thing is, this was not true. By simply moving the error message to the side I could continue operating PlayOnline. Since this was the case I was able to update PlayOnline to the latest version (1.18.01) and to update the Final Fantasy XI game itself within the PlayOnline Viewer.

Here's where the real problem comes in. When ... Read more

Hi guys.
I've had a few problems before and had amazing help from you guys and am in need of it again im afraid.
When i turned my pc on today i was met with a error message telling me that msn had encountered a problem and need to close, i pressed ok thinking nothing of it. Then another one popped up telling me windows defender also encountered a problem and needed to close aslo. After pressing ok to this the pc then crashed for 5 mins or so. I have also found going into my documents causes a "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". This is a little frustrating, all my music is in my documents and i use msn alot too.
Anyone got any ideas of what this problem is and how i can fix it?
Sorry for not being more specific, im not very savvy with computers, if you need more info just ask.
Thank you in advance for any help guys.

Answer:"MSN encountered a problem and needs to close" and others

Well, I'm not sure if it's your computer or MSN itself. I would suggest reinstalling it first before you do anything else. And then maybe run a virus scan with whatever antivirus you have.

Answer:"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close"

What are you doing at the time of the error? Are you closing IE, opening, clicking or closing a link?
Do you run a virus scan, use antispyware programs, is the O.S. up-to-date?

Hifolks,
This morning, after installing Adblockplus all was fine for a time but when I clicked on the links in the email from PC Advisor, I had an error message which said:
"Oops Exception Encounter. Error Type: Template N/A.
Tag handler does not have a setter for the attribute "specified in the Tag Library description"
This happened on all the links in the PC Advisor mail and when I put the message in Google to check what it was, all the links that I clicked there resulted in the same message.
I am using the latest version of Firefox.
Anyone know what is causing this?
Thanks.

Not just this morning, but over the weekend.
The site was down for possible maintenance this morning, but I have just received an 'Exception Encountered' while using My Post button, and a bit of slowness on page loading. Other than that, its okay.

Heres the files I've tried to use:

avs video tools converter
twins video to ipd

all of these are some top notch programs however I can't seem to get them to run properly. The programs either just shut down during the transfer or i get the dreaded "this program has encountered an error and needs to close" error message.

any suggestions would be very helpful...heres my hi jack this log...

Hiyas. Well I have had this pc for about 3 years now. It has never been great especially seeing as I was completely mis-sold it by dun dun PC WORLD!
But anyway, it worked to a degree. Programmes would run, albeit slowly cos of the low system specs (gcard and mboard).
I recently had a problem where I tried to restore my pc after a critical error, using backup discs I made because none were supplied with the pc. These backups were made by a burnijng programme that came WITH the pc.
Anyway, this failed and a full pc repair later, including a new gfx card and a motherboard, my pc worked faster than ever.
Two weeks later and I am getting nothing but errors.
This programme has crashed that programme has crashed. My games crash firefox crashes ie crashes, every programme I have has crashed in the past week. I re-installed and reinstalled and reinstalled. I did virus scan after scan after scan, used spybot SD and after fixing every virus and every error i still get THE PROGRAMME HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE.

I am on the verge of teaching my comp how to fly without wings. I don't want to spend loiads of money getting it repaired AGAIN or downloading some auto fixer because I don't have lots of money atm, and I don't intend to waste too much on this heap of crap I call a pc.

?Services and Controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close?.I continually get this error over and over again after about five minutes of being logged into my computer. That has led me to believe that it is not a virus which is causing the problem but something different entirely. Also the error started happening after I used ?Disk Cleaner? to delete all my temporary files, and (I know really stupid of me) deleted some large programs that I thought useless such as KasperSky Trial that had run out by just right clicking and deleting the file. this first happened to me a few days ago when i tried to play a file i had downloaded from bit torrent. any kind of attempt to access the file resulted in the program encountering an error and needing to shut down [send/dont send error report etc].
i.e. if i tried to look at the file in its folder, windows explorer would need to shut down, if i tried to play it in wmp, it would shut down, divx the same.

i ran g-spot on the file and i had all required codecs to play it. so i figured the file was just corrupt and deleted it. now i cannot play any of my avi files that have worked perfectly for years. i have them burnt to dvd, but i now cannot access any of them. its not my dvd drive, as i can still play actual dvd's. i have some avi files stored on my hard drive that still play.

this is a most frustrating problem. i was watching these AVIs not more than a few weeks ago, now i cant access them at all without this error being generated.

i have run a scan on my computer and havent turned up any virus' etc.

please help!!!!!!!!

I have a Gateway Notebook (model 6020GZ) that runs Windows XP Home Edition. Microsoft Works 8 came pre-installed on the system. I recently started using the calender/reminder feature in Microsoft Works 8. It worked fine for several weeks, then I began to get the error message: Microsoft Works 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close

Details are: App Name: wkscal.exe App Ver: 8.4.623.0
Mod Name: wkscalac.dll
Mod Ver: 8.4.623.0 Offset: 00066736

I have gone to support.microsoft.com. and located the page that I believe would help me fix the problem, which they say is caused by either the mswkscal.wcd file is corrupted - or - the calendar file has reached a large size (which I don't think applies to me).

Microsoft's resolution includes removing Microsoft Works 8, running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, then re-installing Works 8.

My dilemma is I don't have a disc to reinstall. I have contacted Gateway, and they told me I needed to contact Microsoft Support. Microsoft Support tells me that since the software came pre-installed, they can't help me, and I need to contact Gateway - Do you see where this is going?

I do not want to uninstall Works 8 until I am sure I will be able to re-install it. Is there a download to re-install Works 8 or a patch that will fix the problem?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:HELP!! error message: windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

You've definitely got some nasty malware on your system there. Please click on and follow the directions in the 5 Steps link in my signature below to scan your system for malware and to post a Deckard's System Scanner log in the HijackThis forum section. Unfortunately we cannot advise about HijackThis logs in the XP section.

As far as the explorer error, if you have a Windows XP CD you can insert the cd and then go to Start > Run and type "cmd" w/o quotes. Then type in "sfc /scannow" without quotes to run the Windows File Checker. It will check the system files on your PC and if they have been altered they will be replaced with a copy from your XP cd.

Definitely follow the 5 steps link in my signature below though. You've got some nasties on your system.

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services error constantly

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK... I got a new 250GB Maxtor H.D. and installed it with the jumper set to cable select and the cable hooked up master to my existing 80GB Western Digital HD and slave to the Maxtor. I installed Maxtor's Maxblast 3 and followed the instructions for copying the contents of my existing boot drive to the Maxtor. That went OK. I shut off my computer switched the cables to make the Maxtor the master and booted up my machine. That worked fine too, so I figured I was good to go and I could free up my old drive to use as storage since everything currently on it was now duplicated on my new drive. Here's where I started to get stupid I think. I ran Partition Magic 8.0 and decided to delete the partitions on my old drive because it had three and Maxblast created 3 partitions on my new drive as well so I had six drives and that seemed kind of messy. I rebooted, Partition Magic did its thing and now my machine is not running right at all. I can't run some programs. I get an error message saying "The drive or network this shortcut refers to... " blah blah blah. You've probably seen that one before.
Even worse is the error I get when I try to go to MY Computer.

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. "

The "error signature" for the error message is as... Read more

Answer:"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close

I do not have all the answers, but do have concerns about the way you cabled this thing. That may have caused some of the problem that you now have. I would suggest getting your cableing correct first. Take a look at this:

Make sure you have the master and slave jumpers setup correctly on your hard drives. The jumper schematic is usually displayed on the top of the drive.

DO NOT mix the master and slave settings. For Example, do not mix Master and Cable Select on the same ribbon cable. If one is Master the other must be slave. If one is Cable Select, the other should also be Cable Select. (Please note that the majority of hard drives are factory default as Cable Select)

One needs also to make sure the drive is placed correctly on the ribbon cable as shown below:

M
O
T
H ==Ribbon Cable=== Slave ===Master (end of cable)
E
R ..................................„» OR „º
B
O == Ribbon Cable==Cable Select==Cable Select (end of cable)
A ..............................( as Slave)……. ( as Master)
R
D
Ribbon Cables and colors of 80 pin cables look and are to be used like this:

Motherboard============Slave==============Master
…,,,,,,,,..Blue……………,,,,,,,………..Gray…………,,,,,,,,,,,,,,…………Black

Oh, also remember that the floppy cable red mark is put on opposite as the regular hard drivers. Otherwise, the red mark faces away from you as you work in the case.

Ouch!! I doubt anyone is going to read that log. The first thing you want to do is reinstall IE7 - even better, don't use it. Get Firefox instead - leaves IE in it's dust!

Hi;
Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-
thanks

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Answer:Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme

Use Windows Style Builder to do that...

I recently uninstalled and wiped all my firefox settings after installing a addon call ghostborwser (or something similar) it has a icon of Casper the Friendly ghost to represent it. It Removed all my colour and images form ALL websites visited it was suposed to be (I assumed anyways) like a 'bosskey to hide the browser/make it invisible, after the colour faded from my world I uninstalled the Addon and restarted firefox and the colour and images were still gone so I uninstalled firefox and erased all of my settings out of the Docs setting folder (Exept for backing up my bookmarks)and used ccleaner to purge the rgistery of firefox enteies to start fresh.

I then reinstlled firefox 2.0.0.14 and tried loading it I got the

"firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Message restarted and got the same I rebooted and still the same message
I uninstalled and reinstalled it several times still and still get:

My computer gets the following Error Message everytime I try to go on Fire Fox, Restore to an ealier date, go to a website from a web address in an email in Outlook Express, download certain software or downloads:

XUL Runner
Errorlatform version 1.9.0.4 is not compatible with min version>=1.9.0.5. max version<=1.9.0.5 .

I am able, however, to get on the Internet with Internet Explorer. When I Clean the Disk, the number value of stuff to erase increases rather than get wipped out. It is now up over 300,000 MB's. It slowly started at 25 MB's and has grown very, very slowly. I Clean the Disk and Degfrag every time I use the computer.

My system is a Dell Dimension 3000 using Windows XP Home Edition.

This ubiquitous error message constantly pops up and blocks me from doing certain things. I have tried Restoring the computer to an earlier date. I have used the Dell drivers to try to clean the hard drive, but I am blocked.

I first noticed this in early November 2008. The Verizon Anti-Virus System did nothing to alert me to any viruses.

I have spent a good amount of time trying to solve the problem, but it is out of my knowledge of information.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Answer:Error Message "XUL Runner" Platform Version "1.9.0.4" not Compatible

Ok let us start simply
This may just be a corrupted install of firefox or and incompatability issue with a add-on.

Some Firefox issues can be resolved by downloading a new Firefox installer from Mozilla.com and then closing Firefox, deleting the Firefox installation directory and reinstalling Firefox. (On a typical Windows install, you would delete the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder and then reinstall Firefox using the "Standard" Setup Type.) Another option would be to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall into a different folder location, which is done using the "Custom" Setup Type on Windows and choosing a different Destination Folder for the install location (e.g., C:\Program Files\Firefox3). [3]

or for a completely clean install of FF

* First, download an official version of Firefox from Mozilla.com (or download Firefox 2 if your system can't run the current version) and save it to your desktop or other location. Avoid unofficial download sites that bundle Firefox with other software such as the Google Toolbar.
* Next, completely uninstall your current version of Firefox as outlined in Uninstalling Firefox. (Note that removing the Firefox installation directory will also fix some problems related to old or incompatible browser plugins on Windows systems, by removing plugin files that may be contained in the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins folder.)

I typicalliy save a file I am working on and then just click the "X" in the upper right hand corner to exit a document. Should I forget to save, I generally receive a prompt asking if I want to save the document before exiting.

A friend insists that the proper procedure to exit a program is to click File then Close to properly close the program. He demonstrated by clicking the "X" to exit the program. When he double clicked the program icon on his desktop, the program opened to the document he was previously working on. (This doesn't happen with all software programs)His argument? "See it isn't really closed, if someone were to hack my computer via a wireless connection, they could see what I am working on so you should always use File, Close." I said "no problem because the wireless connection is encrypted with a password so someone cruisng WiFI's could access the connection anway."

I say the program document is closed when you use the "X" he insists it is still an open document. Anyone care to settle this one?

Hi, welcome to TSF!

You have a password stealer rootkit in your system.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

It is to delete a particular registry key that was corrupted by a MS update. Here is the fix that worked for me.Start > Run > regeditNavigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\INTERNET Export this key to back it up first, then delete the whole Internet key (and it's sub-keys). Reboot your systemTask Scheduler should now work.

I was messing with my ASUS N10j and I tried to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit on it.

Installation went fine, but then when it wanted to boot up for the first time, it gave me a window that said "Can not open recovery.dat" and a huge red ERROR message appeared in the middle of the screen.

From googling, these guys (http://www.overclock.net/windows/435626-error-recovery-dat.html) believe its because of a hidden recovery partition. Well, how do I delete that partition if I don't have access to Windows?

The laptop also doesn't have a DVD-drive, so the solution has to be via USB.

I have no clue what to do. Help!

EDIT: Ugh... I guess this is more software related... Sorry.

Answer:Red "ERROR" message because "Can not open file C:Recovery.dat"

Greetings, RommelTJ...

Couple of things you might consider trying:

* Boot to a Linux USB drive, and format your hard drive from that environment - tips on how to create a Mint 7 (Gloria) bootable flash drive can be found here...

* Get your hands on a USB DVD drive, and use it to boot to your Windows disk to delete/recreate any partitions...

Quick question: how are you trying to install Vista without an optical drive?

I just began getting this error yesterday. What is the likelihood that another issue besides a failing hard drive is causing error? Secondly, I've already purchased a new hard drive as a precaution. What is the fastest/easiest way to backup/clone this drive?

Answer:"Windows detected a hard disk problem" error message

Hello,

Please open an elevated command prompt.
When you have the command promt open please enter the following command:
sfc /scannow and press enter.
After the scan is 100% and the scan did repair files please restart your computer.

Please re-open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

The cbs.log file will be posted on the Desktop as the current user, named sfcdetails.txt. Please attach this file in your next post.

Note: You can also copy/paste the commands to make it easier.

Hello All,

I am experiencing a very debilitating issue with my laptop. The error indicated on the title of this thread appears every time I try to open multiple programs on my machine; the error is present in at least the following applications: Windows explorer, HP SimplePass, HP CSI Shell, HP Support Assistant, HP Installer, Adobe Acrobat X Pro, Synaptics TouchPad V7.5... and perhaps more.

I include with this message a zip file with some recent logs (CBS. log, Errors Event Viewer, Last Scan.txt, Malware log.txt, Check Disk Event Viewer log) for your review so that both of us can save some valuable time.

Note: I am not by any means an expert on either computer software or hardware so, I would really appreciate if you help me out to sort this issue having that in mind.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Error message: "A problem caused the program to stop working..."

Hi,

Can you remember when this problem started to happen, if so had you made any changes to the computer such as software installations?

If so, you can try a system restore or use a backup if you have one to roll the os back to a time when all was working well and see if this solves your problem

I can almost guarantee that this is either a damaged or corrupt shell or a conflict with some software, as the fact that you can load the operating system up and get past post shows that it's not hardware related in anyway

Thank you

My printer was not printing at all. I have changed all 5 cartridges, and the printer still does not print. The RESUME/CANCEL button is flashing orange continuously, and when I attempt to print anything I get the following error message: "Operator Error: Press the printer's RESUME button. If this doesn't clear the error, cancel printing and turn the printer off and then on again".

I followed these instructions (multiple times) with no success.

From the printer's Maintenance I tried the following:
i) Deep Cleaning - Black PGBK, resulted with the same error as above.
ii) Deep Cleaning - All colours, same result as above.
iii) Cleaning - same result as above.
iv) Print Head Alignment - same result as above.
v) Nozzle Check - same resuilt as above.
Turned the printer off and on again, flashing orange light.
Shutdown the computer and restarted it, with no improvement.
Lastly noted how many orange flashes - five. So I consulted the Service Manual,
Section 2-1. Operator Call Errors (by Alarm LED Blinking in Orange).
5 times; Solution suggested Install the print head properly.
All the Ink Cartridges show solid red light (installed correctly). Can anyone please offer a suggestion as how to correct this problem, thank you?

I have an Hp C7280 All in one printer, that I've owned for about 5 years. For about the last year or so I have gotten this error message "Photo Tray Problem" It won't let me do anything with the printer when this happens. The tray is pushed all the way in and actually I never even use it. Ever! So I'm not sure why it randomly pops up? In the past, I would reset the printer by unplugging the power and letting it set for a couple of hours. Then it would work...until now. I have had this problem for over a week and have tried everything I can think of! I have...
1. Opened and closed the tray (to make sure it's as far in as it can go)
2. Cleaned it out with compressed air (made for printers)
3. Unplugged the power and let it sit for over 24 hours
4. Checked to see if anything is stuck inside or missing. It runs through it's cycles fine, although it's a little noisier than it usually is, not much just a little. (But it might just be louder because my face is shoved inside the printer to see what's wrong )
5. Tried to reset it using a sequence code to get to the "System Configuration Menu" I cleared out the Hardware failure status

Nothing is working! Any and all help is greatly appreciated!! I am desperate will try about anything!

I'm experiencing real difficulty in trying to delete a sub-Folder from Pictures. No matter what I've done, including taking ownership of it, I am continually getting an error message that says "Item not found" as below;

It continues to show as part of my Admin/Pictures sub-Folder tree, and hasn't budged even after a couple of reboots.

I've also tried to delete it from the thread shown in the panel above, but again without success, and with the same error message.

I just want to be rid of it as it no longer performs has any useful purpose or storage value in Pictures.
