Question: Wats the best virus scaner out there?

Preferred Solution: Wats the best virus scaner out there?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This thread is a re-done version of the "What Virus scanner is the best?" thread. The thread has been re-made because of the bad poll choices (With permission from a Moderator). The Antivirus program will be for 3 computers. I would like the most effective program. Price, for the most part, does not matter.

Answer:What is the best virus scaner?

I voted to answer the question literally....Symantec, as for 2009 AV-Comparatives.Org rated it as the best. Although due to recent years of problems with Symantec regarding issues and bloat, it has always been good in detection, and this year they've totally revamped it from the ground up, it's very light (approx 8 megs).

2nd place at AV-....Kaspersky
3rd place, Eset NOD32.

And over the past 6 months in various tests, Microsoft Security Essentials has still managed to average in the top 5 choices of most of their tests. And in recent months, even better so. Very good considering it's a product released only this past October.

So while my answer of "Symantec" answers your question literally (which...was already answered in your prior post if you red the abundant links to av-comparatives.org)....MSE would be my choice to install on all my home computers...which is what I did, even though I have free licensing for Eset and Symantec.

It's FREE
It's nag free
It's relatively light on your system
It's nag free
It's great in detection and cleaning
It's nag free
And it has a simple interface...
...plus it's nag free. Pretty rare feature for a free antivirus.

Windows XP SP2

Computer loads fine. when going into my account everything loads fine then i get pop ups saying i need to clean my computer due to 34 infections. Then another popup like messages comes in lower right corner of the screen saying i have someone trying to access my computer trojan ect. This goes on for awhile. When using google i can type in a search item and the google page goes white and doents load. If i manually type in a address it will pop up. When google was working when i clicked on a link it would send me to a new page that had nothing to do with anything.

Does anyone know of a really good and easy to use virus/spyware/firewall? I am using zonealarm right now but im just wondering if there are any better.

Answer:whats a really good virus scaner?

Hi,
I've been using Zone Alarm Security Suite (paid) for 3 yrs & I'm very pleased with it. Norton and I were for some reason not well matched.

whats the differnece bettween a wired router and wired switch . ethernet?

Answer:wats the difference

A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks. In home networks the router is given the IP addy assigned by your ISP and then distributes IP addy's to the terminals connected to network -- most commonly with DHCP.

A switch works much the same way, without the IP address control.

Answer:wats the right thing to do?

Hello,

Simple answer...it's entirely up to you!!!

Do as you please... .

But if I were you, I'd just do the format anyways! Saves hassle, and probably prevents me from possibly being attacked by suspected computer stealing guy .

Answer:Wats the best Intel chipset??????????

I've heard that i875P is good from some people and that it isn't so great from others...so I'm guessing that it doesn't really matter which of the 2 you pick. I have no clue as to if the i915P chipset is any good. I imagine that it is really good, only 'cause the # is higher...I don't really know if you can o.c. the chipset or not.

problem:
i cant believe im having problems with this (ive taken the cisco CCNA course), but after reformatting the older comp (comp 2), i cant get the newer comp (comp 1) onto the network. ive done the normal xp network wizard, but the newer comp will error out no matter what setting i put it on. so i did everything manually, setting the ip addresses, resetting and reconfiguring the router, but all i can get is that each computer can see the other, and i can access files on the newer computer using the older computer. however, the newer computer cannot access the older computers files. thanks for any help.

I'll recommend the easy way, even though some forum members can't seem to understand why it works. Install the NETBEUI protocol on both machines, and I suspect you'll be browsing after that. It's on the XP CD in the VALUEADD directory.

Hey everyone i m new to all the overclockign and i was wondering wats the most juice(optimal Perfomance) i can get out of my system
Following are the specs (none is overclocked or modded in anyway)

1.6GHz P4
256MB pc133
40GIG Seagate Baracuda
INTELD845GLLY MOBO

ATI Radeon 9200SE video Card(<--how can i overclock this)
Hercules MUSE 5.1DVD sound card

If you guys can tell me how to get the most outta this system that wud b gr8 thanks alot :giddy:

Answer:Wats the most juice i can get out of my system

hmmm

Hey man, looking at your specs im guesing you would not get much out of ur RAM seeing as it is 133MHz and prob unbranded, the cpu however has got potential, i have never owned a P4 so i dunno much bout them but i have seen people get an increase o about 400/500Mhz with 1.4ghz P4's so there is hope! I had a 9200 once an i couldn't get much out of it, got bout 30mhz core increase and 40 mhz ram increase before i started getting artifacts all over the screen!

Tips - If overclocking the CPU invest in a high quality cooler to let you get the most out of it.

To be honest you could do with a complete upgrade but if thats all you got then happy overclocking! let us know how u get on!

Answer:Wats Happening To My Computer? Help!

Your system is terribly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show. Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution. So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused. In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute filesI would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords wh... Read more

Answer:What is scaner all about?

? Can you explain a little more what you mean by "scaner"? Do you mean scanner? If you do mean scanner, it is a device for making an electronic image of a picture or printed document (usually) which can then be displayed on your computer screen. There are systems that can "read" printed text and translate it into editable form for further processing on a word processor.Sorry if I've misunderstood. If I have, please redefine your enquiry.

ive got this new computer (spec.. 3.2Ghz intel 4, 2GB RAM, radeon 9550 128mb graphics card, audigy 2 sound card, xp sp 2 etc..)

i installed Rome: Total War and the Return of the King games today - and either only a small amount of time (after the intro for rome) or a longer time (when i wanted to exit on rotk) the game freezes, u get a jit jit repeated through the speakers and its inexitable. u have to restart to get out of there. these games played ok in my other comp, jst was very slow when running huge battles in rome.

im jst wondering if this sounds like a problem anyone here has had before, or if they have an idea wat it cld be. i think its pretty impossible that its RAM or hard drive related - coz they are top end. i intall the directx 9.0b that rome comes with - doesnt seem to take much time installing tho - its jst the acceptance screen and then the finished screen. i also downloaded and installed directx 9.0c and its not helping.. also, my old and favourite game 'civilisation: call to power' doesnt play at all. u click on play and nothing happens. i think that's all i know really... any help appreciated

Answer:graphics card? wats wrong plz?

most likely it's a graphics driver related problem. Try the latest ATi Drivers, or maybe the modded Omega ATi drivers.

for proper driver installation, get Driver Cleaner Pro, uninstall the driers from add/remove programs, boot to safe mode--run driver cleaner, reboot and install new drivers.

Can anyone help with suggestions as to what I should look for when purchasing a multi function printer/scanner. I am thinking about the HP 3310 as it has 6 individual inks and I would like to print photos as well as text.

Answer:All in one Printer Scaner Fax

6 inks in my IMO is the minimum for photo quality - so it looks like it does the job, I have a HP 2150 and that can take photo inks - although you have to change the black for a photo cartridge. And the results are good.
Although for photographic printing I have just purchased a Hi-Touch 730PS dye-sub printer.
But if you have limited funds / space and want an all in one then this looks good, I'm please with the overall perfomance of the 2150 scanner, fax, copier and the photo prints where OK - just that i am a very very series photographer {although not a Pro}

I'm not sure how my pc has been infected with virus/spyware.

AVG reports virus with IE7 and opera 9.25. and whenever I open any site the pc hangs for a while and then shows connection to this site

http://791224.com (reported as spyware site by stopbadware.org)

and whenever I open any site
in the source there is this code at the top.

<iframe src=http://791224.com/ width=0 height=0 frameborder=0></iframe>

I have placed the hijack this logs. and also scanned with AVG and SuperAntispyware. And the firefox downloads window doesn't open anymore. this is the only browser which does not hang.

wat difference with xp pro?

Answer:wats good about window xp media center?

Enhanced Media...... Your computer must meet certian hardware requirements for it to even work and you can view media files on your TV and not your moniter. I know it can do that but I'm not knowledgable on this version of XP. But I also know it has all the cababilities of the origanal XP pro plus the media aspect of it.

Black Widow 4830pro scanner. I know they are out of business but I want to clean my scanner. Scanning a plain sheet of paper and I get a hint of background shades. Cleaning the top of the glass makes no improvement. I am wondering how to take apart to clean the underside in case there is a film of dirt on the underside. Tnx

Answer:Black Widow 4830pro Scaner

but be very careful and note how each piece comes away so that you can put it back again. Your best bet is to leave it alone and let your software clean it up for you. Having said that I have taken them apart and even replaced 1 glass bed that had been cracked. Make sure you do not alter the angle of the mirrors.

HI, I AM LOOKING FOR INFO, CONCERNING THE RECUVA HARD DRIVE FILE READER SCANER,  I WHOULD LIKE  TO KNOW IF I DOWNLOAD IT,  CAN IT BE USED TO SCAN AND DISPLAY THE INFO ON EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES THAT I CAN HOOKUP WITH A USB HARD DRIVE TOOL, AND STILL REPAIR THEM SO I CAN USE THEM FOR REBOOTING THE COMPUTER THAY WERE FROM?

Answer:HAVE YOU USED ( RECUVA ) HARD DRIVE SCANER?

Lately i used several software products to recover data and in my findings Recuva didn't perform very well.
I settled with Easeus Data Recovery Wizard (and no, this is not and advertisement!) which performs very good, however costs some money if you need to recover more than 2 GB of data.
You can recover external drives via USB with that tool. Same applies for Recuva afaik.

I have plugged my scanner into the usb port but no light comes on, is my scanner faulty? It was working fine on y friends computer (XP) I have Windows 98SE I can install the software for it no problem, when I go into scanners on control panel no scanner s listed, if I say add scanner it only lists Kodak, I have pressed have disc, but it says"The specified location does not contain information about your hardware" I have the option from choosing A:\C:\ E:\ HELP!

Answer:Canon Scaner N1240U Problem no light

Is the device USB powered? That is relies on USB for power or can you power it indipendantly via a 'power brick'If the scanner is working Ok elsewhere and you are relying un USB for power then you almostcertainly have a computer power supply problem.Unplug all USB devices then try.If this does not work get hold of a POWERED USB hub.J

Does anybody know about the iris scanner on Lumia 950s ? Is it harmful for the eyes? I use it every tine to unlock my phone ... Has Microsoft give some medical surveys about it ?

Answer:How safe for eyes health is iris scaner??

There seems to be no explicit report about the safety of the iris scanner in new Windows Mobile devices. Some users have reported experiencing some eye pain, but they seem to be isolated cases.
I'm not sure how the iris scanner works, but I'm deducing it's using some form of infrared laser, and the process of iris recognition is similar to how barcode scanners in groceries work (although the bar code scanners use visible red lasers). We all have heard about the safety issues lasers have with human eyes. Lasers come in five classes: Class I, II, III, IVA, and IVB. Most laser pointers are Class I and are generally safe for the human eye, i.e. accidental somewhat prolonged exposure will not cause permanent blindness. Even some (slightly) more powerful lasers (equipped with an infrared filter and are optically de-focused) are used in law-enforcement as "photonic disruptors" by temporarily blinding the target. I have a class IVA laser "pointer" that has an output of 1.4W (compared to a typical laser pointer that has an output of LESS than 1mW, or 0.001W) - now this laser really burns, and will result in permanent blindness once shined into an eye. It's somewhat the same laser than can be found in some optical drives.
The conclusion is: check the phone specifications in the phone manual for any signs of a laser class. If it is a Class I infrared laser, then it is safe to use.
I don't own a Lumia 950, so I can't check this for you.

Answer:T431 E721005 cannot detect finger scaner

Hi, If you go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Device Manager Is there an entry that says "Biometric Devices"? Could be that the finger scanner is not properly attached to the system board, but could of course be other things too..

One of our home pc's has become infected with some malware that I am unable to remove. From what I can determine it identifies itself with an error message from software-online-scaner.biz. When I start up either Firefox or IE, I can navigate a page or two and the following security message pops up, "Your computer remains infected! They can cause data loss and file damages and need to be cured as soon as possible. Return to system security and download it to secure your PC."

I have run a full scan using McAfee but nothing showed up. I really didn't expect it to. But when I ran SpyBot it found only Burst Media and Right Media both which I was able to fix. I knew that neither was what I was dealing with, so I'm stumped as to how I can get rid of this particular malware.

One serious problem I have is that shortly after starting either browser this screen message pops up and I cannot close out the error message so I am unable to navigate to any other website. I am forced to run Windows Task Manager to close out the browser.

Any ideas as to how I can remove this particular malware?

Thanks.

Answer:software-online-scaner.biz browser problem

I downloaded and ran Ad-Ware. I thought I had fixed the problem, but it returned after a short time on the internet. My browser is still being hijacked and displaying the same symptoms as before. Only change is the site name which now seems to be "online-scaner-software.org." Any ideas what else I can do?

Thanks.

ok people brace yourself for this one...

my computer is connected to my house network through a usb wireless device and it has worked fine since i got it. i use p2p programs often and found that the limit on half-open connections is too low for me so i set out to find a fix after finding many sites that resommened and used the lvllord fix for this i got it and ran it. it said i had to reboot which i decided 2 do since i had also installed a utility for a new mouse that i got, which also needed a reboot.

so i rebooted my comp, can connect to the network fine, signal strength good, dhcp is working, but i cant access anything on the network. i cant get google, the router, the modem or even other computers on the network. so i think that the patch did somethin bad to the tcpip.sys file when i ran it so i hit the unistall button on it (though it says that the limit is still at 10 andnot 50 which is wat i changed it to??) i hit unistall, says it failed somethin 2 do with windows changin the file or somethin. anyway i thought that possibly the utility i installed did somethin (very remote, but nonetheless) so i unistalled it and rebooted, nuthin.

so i tried disconnecting the usb dongle and running a network cable and hooray it all works again. so that ruled out the .sys file being bad. so i thought id unistall the usb dongle and reinstall (maybe the driver didnt like the patch). but device manager locked up.

so i thought ah well, deal with it later gunna watch a video then maybe... Read more

Hi,

Noticed sometime ago that my computer was running slow and then started to get re-directed from clicking links from "within" browser search result pages (IE8 and Google Chrome) - Green Eye Globe on IE tab (with yellow bug?) displays and get re-directed via rle822x.cn to random ad pages and then after a couple of re-directs to online-scaner-software, which gives a security centre display, your machine in vulnerable etc - and tries to install trojandownloader - Microsoft Security Essentials catches it and removes it, but IE/Chrome is locked and the only way to get out of it is to kill off the browser process. I've scanned with McAfee (didn't find anything - even though I'd updated!!) I then scanned with Microsoft Security Essentials, which found a couple of things I then scanned with SpyBot, which found a couple of other things and finally MalwareBytes (which found a couple of other things) - all with the latest updates in safe mode.
I'm running MalwareBytes again today (new definitions from yesterday) - full scan. I would have run ComboFix, but I'm wary that the links referred to from this site are broken, so I'm not sure where to download it from?
I don't really want to re-pave the machine if I can help it, but my wife uses the machine and uses it for all sorts of things.

Help much appreciated....

Answer:rle822x.cn - online-scaner-software - repeated trojan infection

Hmm, i can only think of either a system restore, or if push comes to shove, a re installation of windows. Try a system restore then run a virus scanner with hueristics on high sensitivity. Then run MBAM and other apps you use.

Conficker, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm targeting the Microsoft Windows operating system that was first detected in November 2008. The worm uses a combination of advanced malware techniques which has made it difficult to counter, and has since spread rapidly into what is now believed to be the largest computer worm infection since the 2003 SQL Slammer.
To start itself at system boot, the worm saves a copy of its DLL form to a random filename in the Windows system folder, then adds registry keys to have svchost.exe invoke that DLL as an invisible network service.
Once infected, it disables Windows Automatic Update, Windows Security Center, Windows Defender, Windows Error Reporting and installs more malware in your computer. It also collects personal information and attach to several processes like svchost.exe, explorer.exe and services.exe. So, How to Remove this Virus? 1. Right-click the Explorer.exe process and choose the option ?Properties?. 2. Click on the ?Threads? Tab, locate and highlight the Conficker DLL files listed below. 3. To kill Conficker DLL files, click the ?Kill? button. 4. Kill the following Conficker DLL files: %System%\[RANDOM FILE NAME].dll 5. Open Regedit 6. Find and Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\{random}\Parameters\?ServiceDll? = ?[PATH OF WORM]? 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\{random}\?ImagePath? = %SystemRoot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Hey!!! Please help me. About two days ago, my computer got infected with Vista Anti-virus 2011. I spent the whole day trying to remove it, I finally did with the help of Malwarebytes. Its seems to wipe it out until today when Vista Anti-virus emerged again. I ran Malwarebytes and removed it again. Rebooted and ran it again and came up clean. I also ran systematic antivirus and it also came up clean. The only problem now is that about every minute a commercial audio plays without anything else running. Nothing pops up or anything, just the audio file. Also when I try to go in the internet either with internet explorer or firefox, I get alot of redirects. Please help me!!!Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<==. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue. Then post your DDS and GMER logs as a reply to this topic. Hello,

Well today my brother and his wife were using my computer and when I got on the first thing I was met with was this little problem. A black rectangular box in the middle of my desktop with red lettering stating:

YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED!

The program that suddenly showed up on my hard drive is called Advanced Virus Remover. The desktop background has been changed to a plain blue background and the task manager has been blocked by the so called "administrator" even though I am logged into the default admin account.

For an anti-virus on my system I currently use Avast Home Edition but it seems to have been unsuccessful at removing the entire virus and it just keeps coming back. I have not personally had a virus like this in some years now. I want to find a method that is going to COMPLETELY eliminate everything that has been placed onto my PC 100%.

I do have a complete backup of my system made. When I first installed windows XP on my machine I made a complete backup witch I can use if all else fails to completely wipe out this situation. However since I did a complete recovery to my system about a week ago just before I got internet hooked up to it again I really do not want to do everything all over yet again.

Any recommendations to completely rid myself of this garbage is much appreciated.

Answer:Virus alterting me of a virus - Advanced Virus Remover

I appears as if I have removed it completely, but I am always a bit worried whenever something like this happens even it seems to be gone. Any pointers would still be helpful.

I have recently purchased a HP All-In-One computer running Windows 7. This past Friday I chose a link from Google news thinking I was going to a news article. Instead, I was taken to a website that appeared to be a virus scanner. I recognized that this was a scam and X'ed out of the screen. Now the computer is slow when navigating the web and periodically returns to the virus scan scam. The virus shows as AVG8 virus scan.

I've run both Avast virus scan and Malwarebytes malware scanner and both show up with 0 infections.

Can anyone provide me a direction that would eliminate this browsing re-direct problem?

(Ironically, I have an old dell laptop running Windows XP that has the same problem. Since it is old and I got so frustrated I just stopped using it. I bought the All-In-One for my wife for Christmas and now it's doing the same thing.)

Thanks

Hello everyone.

I have tried my best to remove this virus on my laptop, but no success yet.

Here are all of the things the virus does:

-Prevents access to websites like spybot, instead of letting me see the site, it simply says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", and there is a button to click that says "Diagnose Connection Problem" (no connection problem of course)

-When I click links from a google search, they most of the time take me to the wrong webpage and I am forced to copy/paste the original link into the web bar.

-Programs like Combofix, Spybot, and HJT do not work and a box comes up after starting them saying "Combofix has stopped working".

-I tried running the programs in Safe Mode, but no luck there.

If anyone knows a fix please reply.

Thanks,

Sean

I have a nasty if not multiple nasty virus's and have not been successful removing them. It started with the XP Anti-Virus 2011 Removal fake anti-virus popping up with all real anti-virus programs disabled and anytime I try to go to an antivirus website I'm redirected to a random site. This happens in all browsers not just Internet Explorer. I also had many of my files changed to hidden file folders and also the start/all programs button does not show any of my programs. I mananged to get both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware on my computer and was able to get rid of much of the problems by running these programs. Now it seems the XP Anti-Virus 2011 has been removed but I still have the issue with my webpages being redirected depending on which page I try to access. I also have many processes that should not be running in the task manager and when i close them out they just start back up again. This worm seems to be accessing my iexplorer because there are multiple iexplorer.exe open at all times and sometimes the CPU Usage gets very high which is not normal for my computer. The final symptom is that at random times I get a webpage pop up or if not a webpage an error that reads like the following example:

An error has occured in the script on this page.

line: 13
Char: 1
Error: Object doesnt support this property or method
Code: 0

Internet Explorer will then be locked and will only link to the Fake AntiVirus software.

Can someone please help? I have ran Malewarebytes a few times but it has not worked. I am currently in Safemode and re-running once again.

Lots of people have been getting this recently. Is it similar to Vista Internet Security 2011? Thats the one i got. Dunno if it matters if urs is windows 7 or xp. When it pops up and the the shield icon shows up in the taskbar tray, open task manager. Look for .exe's pw.exe and MSASCui.exe. For me it was uuj.exe.

Right click on it and then click open file location. If you cant see it, then go into folder options and click show hidden files and show system files too. Once u can see it, u can delete it.

The pop up should be gone now but you still wont be able to load you .exes. You can only use them by running as admin.

So click start and type in regedit. Right click on it and run as admin.

In regedit look for these entries;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\pezfile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pezfile
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe\shell\open\command "(Default)" = "%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\pw.exe" /START "%1" %*
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\pezfile\shell\open\command "(Default)" = "%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\pw.exe" /START "%1" %*

For me, i could only find the third one. I deleted replaced it with "%1" %*

Then i downloaded and used that vista/windows7 exe fix from this site and fixed the problem

Hello
I have been experiencing some problems with my computer recently. Firstly, my virus scanner (AVG) keeps on finding a virus called 'not-a-virus:RemoteAdmin.Win32.WinVNC-based.f' and some trojans called 'Trojan.JavaClass'. I have also been getting random pop-ups whenever I have been browsing the internet, and my computer seems to be running very sluggish, especially at startup.

I also believe that, last week, someone gained remote access to my computer, as all of a sudden, my mouse wouldn't move properly and the computer became really slow. This only stopped when I engaged the internet lock on my Zonealarm firewall.

Today, I was asked by Zonealarm to give a program called spoolsv.exe "access to privileged rights" which I have never seen before for this program. When I looked at the properties of spoolsv.exe, it said that it was created in 2006 but modified in 2005 (???), and so therefore didn't allow the program access. (I don't know if that has anything to do with the problems that I am having but thought I would mention it)

hello guys/gals. this is my first post here. wonderful helpful site you have here ! thanks !
alright i may provide too much info, but i figure too much is better than not enough.
for starters, my wife's cousin was using my laptop to do online school work when the screen went blank, then changed to a solid red screen. all of those fake "windows restore" type error messages started popping up saying things such as failed hard drive, etc. then it started doing this scan and showed all of these problems that it detected. it prompted you to purchase their "bogus" program. luckily i was home and told her that was not legit and to avoid that. i grabbed the laptop from her, closed all of these 60 or so error messages, closed out this fake scan screen, and rebooted my pc. after reboot, everything appeared to be gone. my desktop icons were gone, my desktop image was gone and replaced with a solid red screen, everything in my start menu was gone.

i quickly realized that everything was not gone, but whatever had infected my computer had "hid" everything. i shut down again and hit my f8 key to reboot into safe mode. i have windows xp professional (5.1,build 2600) 32-bit. after hitting my f8 key, it pulled up the "windows advanced options menu" where i selected "safe mode with networking" so that i could troubleshoot and research the internet from the safety of safe mode. after selecting "safe mode with networking", i... Hello,I'm usually good enough with my computer to avoid and/or repair these kinds of things on my own, but have never had this.It changed my desktop background from a picture to text warning me about malicious content, and at the same time my Windows Update icon flashed red, and my AVG anti-virus warned me about the bugs.Ad-Aware found and removed/quarantined some of them. AVG found and removed others. My task manager still runs properly and found a few programs that looked suspicious "fff.exe", "msctrl.exe", "16627184.exe", & "EtEngineU.exe".I run daily scans for all of my anti-virus and ad-aware, and nothing has come up previous to this stuff today, so I know it's new.One pop-up that looked like it came with a new Windows XP update I downloaded claimed it was "Windows Total Security" and that it would clean up malicious content, but that I'd have to pay.Thankfully I wasn't stupid enough to fall for that, just stupid enough to get it on my computer.I deleted a bunch of those programs from my task manager (ended the process tree completely), removed the programs from the control panel, searched out the files in "My computer" > "C:" > "System", etc. However, there are items in "startup" when I run "MSCONFIG" with the same names that claim they're going to run as soon as I start the program up again.I ran HJT, and the other scans this site recommends before posting a new ... Hello, i'm new to this site, so if i say something stupid please be understanding.
(i'm running vista to clarify)

I had a while ago gotten a virus which would play sounds randomly, and i was able to temporarily fix it by going to task manager and killing the process. after a while the virus stopped bugging me (i guess the antivirus software caught the culprit.)

recently i downloaded an installer, and it happened again. this time i hit ctrl alt del, and task manager had been removed from the list. i tried accessing it through control panel and it told me it had been blocked by the administrator (me) i then looked up how to re-enable it, and went to run REGEDIT and that was blocked too. i've tried several scripts to re-enable regedit, all to no avail.

whenever the sound stops playing i get a message saying:
"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed

A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

i also found these 2 files in system configuration: BtwSrv (by Microsoft Corporation) and fastnetsrv Service (by Sigma Designs Inc)

I googled the second one, and found it to be a virus (yayy google!)
I am unsure about how to remove these, and i also found several remote applications which i would like to disable... help would be appreciated

McAfee identified a virus and removed it, however it keeps re-appearing

Hi, my computer was struck with that hideous virus AntiMalware and its various forms such as Trojan-Downloader.JS.Multi.ca and Virus.Win32.Gpcode.ak. I kept getting frequent messages or Security Center alerts whenever I used my computer saying those trojans were present and I had to install their program. I managed to stop getting those alerts by deleting some entries from a HijackThis scan such as -ex_08.exe and others stored in the temp folder in the scan that seemed suspicious and those that I verified on Google as trojans. But I still can't use system restore, malwarebytes antimalware program or super anti spyware. I went into safe mode and everything I described above as well trying to install Malware bytes but it's stuck at finishing installation. It just doesn't work so I cant remove all the malware. Im posting a Hijackthis log. Please help.

OK i just got into the Econo Lodge hotel i got my computer and i started to realize it would keep getting hot. So sometimes it would crash or go into hibernation. But now its worse the computer keeps shutting down like in sleep mode where the screen dims and the wireless button becomes red accept now it shuts off is my harddrive shot or is there a remote accesser or worm in this. Let me note i do download ROMS and emulators but are these the cause. Even when my computer is just 34 or 48 degrees Faranheit it will do shall i call it a "sleep-mode shutdown" is this my BIOS doing a fail-safe worm by someone or is my hard-drive shot or is someone invading my computer and infecting it or remotely hacking and shutting it off with a .BAT i should also tell you i am in Safe Mode with Networking while i post this and my computer is Windows 7 Ultimate bought in 2007 and upgraded to Win7 2009.

Hello,I've been figthing with this for some time now, with no joy. I found that somebody has an identical problem here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic279534.html So in any broswer (MSIE8, Firefox, Chrome etc), google search results are hijacked to searchwebnet.info, and then redirected to various other locations - e.g. it seems the first point is searchwebnet.info, and then my browser makes a couple of other hops, before it eventually lands on some dodgy site. Results from search engines other than Google (e.g. Yahoo! or Bing), are not hijacked. Also, same as described in the topic above, MSIE sometimes doesn't start, or sometimes bluescreens my machine when I attempt to run it.One thing I noticed, whether is relevant or not, when the redirection happens, in windows task manager I see SearchProtocolHost.exe process starting up. And staying there, running..Interestingly, my problem also started happening around 17th Dec 2009, which is the date when the above topic was posted. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer:Unknown redirect virus(es?), A virus that often redirects to searchwebnet.info from google results 2

Hi. I am new here. I have had constant problems with my computer crashing for over two weeks. Also I have noticed that I haven't been able to update my anti virus software...both ad aware se personal and avg 7 free have not been able to update for some 16 days now.
I have run your recommended online scanners, pandasoftware, housecall, and macafee. I believe macafee discovered the WIN32.ATAK.B and NEW POLYWIN 32 viruses, but said it could not remove them.
something seems to be eating up my ram, simple rendering tasks cause my computer to crash now.

I have updated to windows sp1a. I am running windows xp pro. I would appreciate any help.

Hi seem something got into my computer!!!
Noticed yesterday my Norton’s popup said it caused an error and had to close. I rebooted the computer and ran a scan, came up fine? I notice my pointer would blink back and forth to the hourglass. I opened my task manager and it seems to be switching with the CSRSS.EXE & N360.EXE (CPU) counter jumping up and down, FAST! Never saw anything like it before, usually what just system idle, maybe Firefox??? I tried running Norton's again, I really forget if it crashed or didn't do anything. Tried the standard online virus scans and ran into all kinds of troubles. Some seem to start to load and then the popup window disappeared? Think it was Kasp., when I reloaded it, it ran and found nothing! Others froze or crashed, restarted the computer, without finishing. It seems to have gotten worse, the last few time I looked at the Task Manager and I see

CSRSS.exe       KSS.EXE       N360.EXE       AVG***.exe

All these (CPU) counts are jumping up and down I have never seen my task manager list jumping so much! It seems so much worse now that I tried all these scans, even with the computer freezing and crashing now. I rebooted in safe mode and came right here. You help me once so long ago and hope you can again! One thing, now when I look at the Task Manager, all those virus program names are gone, list is very short.  Plus (C... Read more

Answer:virus chk, no run! Task Manager show CSRSS.EXE & Virus prgs crazy switching??

Are you really surprised? You have kaspersky, norton, and AVG installed. There I was thinking that I like a bit of tin foil head gear. The executable CSRSS.exe as you typed it has reputation for being exploited, and although it should be a legit bit of XP, it could also be a trojan according to some of the webz? This support article from Micro$oft may be more practical/applicable use to you, and they suggest that it's caused by a corrupt user profile. The suggested remedy is to delete your user account after backing up stuff, and then restart followed by re-creating your user account.

PS

Being a Linux user I'd have to chip in as to why don't you try a linux live DVD/USB, there is no need to make changes to your hard drive or computer with the possible exception of changing the BIOS boot order. If you cannot afford a hardware/software upgrade then just boot into free linux, and try it out. There is no obligation to buy, and little/no risk of damage. Visit the BC linux forums, where people are very friendly and helpful.
