Can't get Norton System work 2003 to start properly

Question: Can't get Norton System work 2003 to start properly

After a painful and long process of cleaning my pc of spyware.
everytime a reboot winxppro. i got the following Security Alert Message from NSW 2003.

"Some symantec product setting has been changed by an unauthorized program. This can indicate that an attacker or avirus is attempting to disable your protection.
To avoid problems setting will be reverted to a previous configuration and your system will be started"

I scanned my system and nothing shows up as a virus
I don't know what's wrong. I uninstalled and re-installed NSW2003 and I am getting the same message.

Please help

Preferred Solution: Can't get Norton System work 2003 to start properly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good Morning.

First of all excuse me for my English, but I am Italian.

I am tryng to install Norton Goback Personal Edition, but I have some problems.

Untill two weeks ago I couldn't use this software because of a Linux Installation of my disk. Recently i have bought a new and larger disk that I have installed as the master one, installing the older one as slave. Then I have copied all the partition except the ext2 partition on the new disk. Now on my primary disk i have 3 primary partitions (Win 98 on fat32, Win2000 on NTFS5 and another NTFS5 partition) and an extended one which contains 4 other partitions (3 with FAT32 filesystem and one with NTFS5 filessystem).

Now let's talk with my problem: when I install Goback with the proper dual-boot installation method, Goback tells me that there are unsupported partitions on my primary disk: the installations finishes without problems, but Goback protects every partition exept the ones containing the operative systems: obviously this renders Goback totally useless for me.

I can't uderstand where is the problem: all the partitions on primary disk are FAT32 or NTFS5, which should be totally supported, but Goback doensn't agree. The disk is a Maxtor Diamond Plus 9 whith an 80 GB size. I know I could repartition and reformat the drive, but I would take a lot of time and I would prefer to avoid it, if possible.

Has anyone ever had a similar problem before? Is there any solution?

Thank you in advance and good... Read more

Answer:Norton Goback doesn' work properly.

i would change the slave to master and master to slave.

My computer is a recent victim of Sasser worm virus. My internet connections were also affected by the virus so donwloaded FXsasser from another computer onto a floppy and used that to repair my computer. All seems fine with a couple exceptions: Norton Anti Virus will not give me any live updates and when I try to go to pages I get a "can not find site".

Hope someone can help. My subscription to Norton runs out on May 9 and I need desperately to renew it and also don't want to be without the protection.

Thanks in advance for any help,

I have Norton Ghost 2003 and have been trying to "CLONE" my Hard Drive for a backup in case my Hard Drive fails (again). I am running XP, but when I "CLONE" the entire HD and connect it to my computer to see if it really is going to work, it does not. My question is, Does Ghost 2003 "WORK" with XP? I know it works with 98 as I have done the "CLONING" on my older computer, but does it actually work with XP or could it be that I have an HP Pavillion and this is why the "CLONE" will not work?

Thanks to any and all help,

I have been using Ghost with Win98 and cloning my C drive (OS and all Programs) onto an extended partition (my D drive). When the C drive got clogged with the rubbish generated by Windows and the Internet I could clone D back to C and have a pristine system once more.I'm now using XP and this just doesn't work. Symantec advertise Ghost 2003 as being compatible with XP and files do get transferred but after the black XP intro screen the blue splash screen comes up and the system freezes.Symantec don't know the answer. Does anyone else?

Also is it possible that windows xp home 2002 has a built in anti virus or firewall already with in it? (couldn't seem to find anything)
If it doesn't have an antivirus program I was going to install norton for someone who has xp and they can't seem to find their windows xp disk could this be a problem?

Answer:Will Norton Anti Virus 2003 work ok with XP Home 2002

XP has no build-in AV in any version, and Norton 2003 work fine with all versions of XP. You shouldn't need the distribution disk to install an application like Norton AV, but you obviously should have it handy, because there are many situations where you could require the disk.

In Windows XP when I go to Start/My Computer I want My Documents to open in a menu. I have tried everything possible and it is set to open in menu but does not work. I think the problem stems from the fact that the folders in My Computer all seem to be shortcuts. When I go to My Docs it says it is on the desktop but it should not be there. When I go to Properties it says it is in C/D&S/myname/mydocs
I hope I have explained this correctly - it was working a couple of weeks ago, but obviously something has made a change to this and it no longer works.
If anyone can offer a suggestion, it would be greatly appreciated.

The only way I know how to delete the files from the Norton Protected Reycle Bin, is by right-clicking onto the reycle bin and clicking onto "clear norton protected files" (or words to that effect)....OR you can open the wizard and delete one at a time

Just after reformatting my laptop, going as good as new! I loaded on my old Norton Systemworks 2003, and it spent 2-3 hours updating itself. Also I appear to have a years free cover till this time next year. Value or what!!?However, can I rest assured that it will in fact have the latest virus protection ie as Norton AV 2005/6 ?K

Answer:Norton System Works 2003 !!

If you`ve been to Live Update and it says you have the latest file definitions - you probably have BUT the base program is now limited in terms of protection. I personally wouldn`t worry about it too much. There are plenty of AV programs out there for free and they won`t "hog" resources like Norton.

I'm lost . any clues to what the hell is goin on? I know it's a crumby processor/ computer but it's pretty new (january 2003), i don't understand. i can't figure this out for her.

Answer:Search under start menu does not work properly

Hiya and welcome

First off, try a general cleanup first

Go to Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content. Also, clear the History.

Content tab, under AutoComplete, clear Forms and Passwords.

Advanced tab, under Browsing, look for Enable Insta on Demand. Untick.
Under Security, look for Empty Tempory Internet... Tick.
Apply and OK

Go to Find Files and type in cookie. When found, open the folder, and delete all the cookies found.

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

Go here and download Spybot:

click the online tab to search for and download the updates, then shut down and relaunch SpyBot.

Go to the Settings tab > File Sets, and uncheck 'System Internals' and 'Tracks' .
These aren't needed for our present purpose, and you can always experiment with them later on.

Finally, after closing down Internet Explorer, click 'Check for problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds 'Fix selected problems'

you may have to run spybot more than once to clear everything

Remove everything pre-ticked in Red

I recently had tried to install Norton System Works 2003 on this computer (What was I thinking ). Before I installed System Works, it took my computer about 1 minute to start up, and it was running like silk from a fresh install of windows. After I installed system works, however, right after when the install completed and it asked me to restart my computer, it took 20 minutes for my computer to load up each time I turned it on (and I am not exaggerating). Plus it took five minutes to open a single application such as WordPad. I got so fed up with this mess that I just formatted the computer to get rid of this problem. However the problem still looms. It took all day to reinstall windows xp yesterday from about 9:50 AM to 6:00 PM. I was about to actually throw the computer out the window at this point, and the computer still takes 20 minutes to load, even after a complete format. Can somebody help me please?!?!?!

Answer:Norton System Works 2003 Flop!

It could be a problem with the hard drive. Use F2 to enter the BIOS setup and make sure the hard drive is being detected correct and that its in DMA/UDMA mode, probably DMA 5 or 6.

Then maybe test the drive with the manufacturer's diagnostics, if the drive has developed bad sectors that'll slow down the boot time and overall system performance.

Lastly you could try to do a low-level format of the drive, if you just formated the partition then maybe there's part of Norton's Goback program still left on the drive, it installs itself and doesn't always want to come out. Killdisk will erase everything and then create a new partition, format it and install Windows all of which you should use the Windows XP CD for.

I have XP Pro on my PC, have installed Norton System Works 2003, and I notice that when opening up the application, and selecting Norton Antivirus (hyperlink) on the System Status for
"Email Scanning" I have an error message showing, (just showing "error")

I have just re-installed XP Pro on my machine, and just starting to re-install all my apps again. I had this issue before and I know Norton say if you get this problem, then re-install product. I have done this in the past, and seems to work for a while, but when checking the status at a later date, I have noticed that the "error" shows up again.

I did install "Zone Alarm" first and then Norton?? Although I am sure before i had just Norton and had the problem and then later installed Zone Alarm. ( uninstalled Norton, re -installed etc)

Just concerned I am not fully protected?

Can someone offer some help

P.S Is it best to except the "default" settings for both "Zone Alarm" and "Norton" or is there some "tweaks" you can do?

Answer:Norton System Works 2003 Question?

The Symantec Support site suggests that either your Systemworks needs updating (run LiveUpdate repeatedly until no more updates are available), or your ZoneAlarm is not configured to allow all of the Systemworks components to access the internet.

If you go to the Symantec site Knowledge Base,
and enter keywords "XP professional email scanning error", you'll get some relevant documents with suggestions on what to do.

Hello All !!
I would like some thoughts on some items in System Works 2003:
Is it safe to leave autoprotect off?
Also , if so, my son plays an online game. Will we be at risk?
Just thought I would get a view opinions from the experts! I have used Norton since 99 but not sure about the new one! I had 2001 autoprotect set to run on downloaded and created files only, but this one does not have that option. It scans all files when opened.

Answer:[Resolved] Norton System Works 2003

You are correct the option for "Run on Downloaded\Created files" was removed from setup per this article Auto-Protect section.

As far as running with AutoProtect off I would not recommend that since you have no idea what you will encounter nowadays.

Just my 2 cents.

Ok I am having a very annoying problem with Norton system works 2003. I want to know if I am the only one experiencing it or is it happening to other people.

The problem is that when I use live update it will tell my that my antivirus definitions, and Norton antivirus is corrupted and it can not determine if their is an update for them (But everything else will update fine). Does anyone know why this is happening? I have tried uninstalling, and reinstalling. I've also even formatted my HDD and did everything from sctarch but this problem still happens.

First of all I would like to take a second to apologize for probably creating yet another topic considering the same matter. However I really do suck when it comes to any technological matters so I was simply unable to find/search efficiently for a solution.
My operating system (which is Windows 7) has been gradually decreasing it's efficiency over these last months.
It's come to this moment where 90% of programs don't work properly without me knowing what's going on.
System itself started to create folders like "asdjbi82egbjqhvsd1v18127teyashbd" (randomized letters and numbers with no sense whatsoever), that despite the fact I've got administrator privileges, forbids me from taking any action.
I can't do much right now. Games don't work (I can install something, but every time I open a patch or the game itself it crashes into "program has stopped working". I've got a thing called a back-up recovery system, but even though I do it, nothing really changes. The entire memory is being literally cleansed and yet after I install anything it happens once again from the very start.
Is there anything I can do or am I being forced to contact professional technicians and pay tons of money (which I don't really have) to try and save it.
I thank every single one of you from the pretty much bottom of my heart for taking your life-time to read this out and maybe help me find a solution.
Best regards,
Bart McAllister.

Everything goes well but when I check the restore cd in the 98 computer ghost begins to run but when I click on image file to restore I get "Disk not created with Norton Ghost". I have tried many ways including backing up to a file and then using nero and a ghost boot floppy to make a bootable CD, all with the same result. "Disc not created with Norton Ghost" error again. 10 cds down the drain. Going out to buy 700mb cd-rw to keep trying. What am I doing wrong? I even tried the assigning drive letters but that doesn't work either. Thanks for any help

Can anybody tell me? I have just bought a new laptop with Norton anti virus 2004 already installed. Can I load Norton System Works 2003 without a conflict, or will I need a later version.

Answer:Norton anti virus 2004 and System Works 2003

You probably should be OK. It should automatically recognise you have the 2004 AV component installed & bypass the 2003 AV version of NSW. IMHO don't install NSW as sometimes it makes your PC a lot slower. Instead make use of some of it's components directly off the CD (without installing), or install the ones you need separately, like Ghost or GoBack (assuming you have the Pro version of NSW?). Good luck, G

This problem began (I think) after I removed a trojan horse using HijackThis.

To fix the problem, I reinstalled Norton AV and got all the updates; that did not resolve the problem.

My OS is Windows Me. I don't appear to have any other problems with my computer (everything else works fine). The only software program that doesnt work is Norton AV, and in particular when it attempts to perform a full system scan. I am able to go to a specific file, or folder, and scan it using NOrton AV without any difficulty.

When I attempt a full system scan, Norton AV stops at about 5,800 files (plus or minus a 100 files).

I think the Norton AV gets to a certain point and then continually rescans a particular file or folder (for hours) until I turn the scan off. It seems to get hung up at a specific place for awhile, and after adding or removing data from the hard drive, the place where it gets hung up changes.

I went to the Symmantec website and typed in my problem. They came up with a number of steps I could take to resolve the problem, but none of them worked. I don't believe they have an answer for my problem in their database.

Does anyone have any idea why my Norton AV is hanging up at about 5, 800 files and is unable to complete the full system scan? I have all the updates.

Thanks for any help

I tried to run System Update (on S10e under XP Home) to check if there were any updates available.  It displayed a message saying System Update needed to be updated.  Systyem Update restarted and then failed with message ' System Update could not start properly'.  I re-booted and tried again but still got same error. Does anyone know where can I download a fresh copy of System Update to re-install it?  Or do you have any other suggestions? Many thanks Ian Message Edited by ianl on 02-16-2009 11:46 PM

Answer:System Update - could not start properly

Are you talking about Windows XP update? Maybe check here: It usually checks for latest update program and redirects to download site if you need it. You need to use Internet Explorer, as it does not work with Firefox. Otherwise just turn on automatic updates in Control Panel > Automatic Update.

my daughters computer starts up but there are no icons, no start, just the background picture comes up. She has windows xp operating system. Please give step by step help very detailed steps to fix this problem

Thanks in advance Rose

Answer:system wont start properly

It sounds like something might be stopping a process from loading called "explorer.exe" this is essentially what you look at when you see the icons, and start menu, etc. Before I, or some other kind individual begins to help, would you please test one thing out (and post results).

When the computer is on, can you hit the key combination "Ctrl + Shift + Esc"

This should bring up a window labeled, "Windows Task Manager". Please report if anything is listed in the window under the "Applications" tab. Also, please check and see if, under the "Processes" tab, you see a process in that window called "explorer.exe" listed in the "Image Name" column.

My lenovo laptop has a terrible beep beep sound when i start the laptop. And when i click any icon on the destop it  opens the recycle bin (its on the top left corner) and when i refresh the destop always the recycle bin is highlighted. When i type something on the internet to search or a message the line ( which blinks when we type) always goes back. So I cannot even type anything correctly. I can't move the scroll down when i am on the internet the scroll goes up again. i need help.

Answer:Lenovo G570 beeps constantly on start up - keyboard and touchpad don't work properly

Welcome to the forum!
Would you turn off the system and restart and see if you can go into BIOS?   If you get the constant beep on startup and are unable to press F2 (I believe it is F2) to enter BIOS, then it sounds like you may have a stuck key on the keyboard, or the cable for the trackpad or keyboard is not fully connected to the systemboard, OR the internal cables are pinched.   If this is the case, then I think you probably need to contact Lenovo service for help as it is likely a hardware issue.
If you are able to go into BIOS, are you able to move around in there?  You could try reloading BIOS defaults and reboot.  If everything works in BIOS and the problem is only in Windows, then it could be a driver / setting (less likely), but you could try to open mouse in the control panel and check settings.
But just based on the symptoms, it really sounds like either the touchpad or keyboard has a stuck key or is acting as if one is stuck due to the bad cable connection or a short.

System update Lenovo stopped working some days ago. I have tried reinstalling it for million times but that did not help.Today I had my fingers crossed that maybe with the installation of currently latest version it will work (systemupdate506-11-04-2014.exe). When I have ran the installation it has warned me there are some previous versions and it will be installed, but installation didn't went thru. After manually removing System update service (sc delete SERVICENAME) and running the installation again, the installation wizard completed sucessfully, but then when I run System update I recieve an error "T440S - System update Cuuldn't start properly".Any suggestions how to achieve that System update would work properly on T440s laptop. My operating system is 8.1 x64 enterprise. With best regards, Bostjan

I have Windows XP Professional w/ SP3 on HP ProBook 4710s
When I went to boot up it was very slow, the lovely start up music did not chime and when at last it did boot there were no icons.  I booted in safe mode and viola icons appeared.  I did a system restore and no icons, I tried restoring to an earlier date still no icons.  I went back to a few months ago and it would not restore.  I called microsoft and they said it could be a corrupted user profile.  I told them I didn't even have a user profile, but they had me create one nonetheless and try to move everything over to the new profile.  My ADMIN profile has now vanished and the two new profiles they had me create do not work, it sits on the "welcome" screen and doesn't change.  What can I do to fix this?
I'm typing on another computer and my  computer will no longer boot in anything but safe mode, no network, no command prompt.  Am I toast?

Answer:Windows will not start up properly System Restore not working

One more note, when I click the Log On to Credential Manager button it lists my two created user profiles but not the ADMIN.  When I try to log on as either of the new profiles the following error message appears: "The system was unable to initiate the interactive logon process with the following diagnostics:  The system cannot find the file specified.  Verify that your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates.  If the problem persists, please contact your system administrator."

This only applies to those that have Norton Anti-Virus.

It has to do with Norton Product Tamper Protection inside Norton.

Windows 7 Upgrade from Vista.
System Restore did not work.
Above is one solution for those that have Norton.

Suggest you Clean reinstall to overcome the Norton infestation.

Use a lightweight free AV solution like Avast.

Hi there,

I've had a few viruses, spyware, etc and after running Spybot, ad-aware 6, ewido and NAV 2006 looks like I got rid of them. After that, I cleaned as much as I could with the Ace Utilities.
The only problem I have is that the Norton Antivirus 2006 now doesn't start when the computer starts.
If I click on "Nmain.exe" doen't work either, but If I run it through the start-up icon it works fine.

Could anyone see my log and tell me please if there is anything wrong???

Your help will be very very appreciated !!!

Thank you very much.

Was wondering if anyone had any tricks for getting a Norton Ghost image made from one hardware type to work on another.

This issue has happened before in the past but I don't have the time needed to start a fresh XP load. Unfortunately the image on the second system won't even allow XP to start in safe mode to then fuss with drivers.

The build has hours of tweaking in it and I don't want to start from scratch.

I have used Norton AntiVirus for almost 3 years on my Vista PC with no problems and no viruses. In May System Restore stopped working. Files and settings were not changed due to unspecified error. Also in May I got some messages that there was a missing dll file. I messed with Volume Shadow Copy service and others. I also had a problem with Norton Utilities not restoring services to normal when some were disabled to speed up my machine. I would get System Restore working for short times only. With help from Microsoft Sapport and a process of ellimination. It came down to if Norton Antivirus is installed on this PC, System Restore will not work. With only factory software and Norton AntiVirus Restore will not work. It does work with MS Security Essentials.

1. What I want to know is if there is a missing dll file could this cause this problem and could the missing dll cause other problems I`m not aware of?

2. Is there a way to find what dll file is missing and repair the problem?

In msconfig>Start-up I see two instances of NSD. One shows in "Common Start-up" and the other shows in "Start-up". No other items show such duplication. NSD is showing strange behaviour at start-up. The NSD panel opens with Windows, as selected, but minimises after a period which varies from a few milliseconds to over five seconds. I have reinstalled Norton Utilities normally and I have reinstalled after manually removing NU (Symantec's procedure) and cleaning-up. Should I have those two instances and, if not, what should I do about them? XP Home/SP1 and Norton Utilities 2002.

Win XP support personnel tell me I have to uninstall NIS 2007 and then I should be able to use System Restore. I really don't want to uninstall NIS because I don't have any other antivirus software installed. Does anyone have an answer:

Answer:Win XP Pro SP2 System Restore does not work with Norton Internet Security 2007

Hi nmcclell, welcome to TSF

You can always install another anti virus.
AVG and aVast! are both highly recommended by many.

If you do not wish to do that, you can/should be able to disable Norton for the system restore, then enable it again.

For Norton 2007 product

STEP 1 Temporarily turn off product protection

1. Start your Norton product
2. On the Norton AntiVirus tab or the Norton Internet Security tab, click Settings.
3. Under Basic Security, click Auto-Protect.
4. Click Configure.
5. In the left pane, click Miscellaneous.
6. In the right pane, under How to protect my product, uncheck Turn on protection for my Symantec product.
7. Click OK.

STEP 2 Run Windows System Restore

Follow the operating system instructions to run Windows System Restore.

STEP 3 Turn on product protection

1. Start your Norton product
2. On the Norton AntiVirus tab or the Norton Internet Security tab, click Settings.
3. Under Basic Security, click Auto-Protect.
4. Click Configure.
5. In the left pane, click Miscellaneous.
6. In the right pane, under How to protect my product, check Turn on protection for my Symantec product.
7. Click OK.

Hi There, so it turns out I'm a total idiot....

My desktop uses Windows Vista Home Premium 2007 and it was bought complete from this company: - they optimise pcs for music production.

I had a backdoor.tidserv!/kmem (something like that) virus and I used norton 360 to find what the virus was, but then it said it needed a manual fix and i would need norton power eraser for this. I ran it and it found some files.....
I believe one was call PCAudio.dll (can't remember 100% if it was actually a dll file) and it was called a rootkey or rootkit type of file.

I thoughtlessly erased it and restarted my computer. However on restart I found that I blue screen whenever I actually boot properly. NIGHTMARE!
I'm guessing that what I deleted was actually a key registry file for the whole computer or maybe a part of an important driver (?)

I was hoping that this might be ok as norton eraser uses a system restore function, however when I tried system restore booting from the windows installer cd nothing changed; I still blue screen as windows loads.

I then read my documentation that comes with my music-pc ( and it says that I shouldn't boot with the windows cd that they provided as it will "remove all music optimisation, windows updates, hardware drivers and support warranty". DANG

Thankfully they said they will hopefully be able to send me an installation cd for this but I may have to wait a week or so. They have be... Read more

I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:

- a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager
- after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later
- my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing
- actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off
- when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either

Things i've tried to get rid of these problems:
- Virus scan with avast!, a couple viruses found and fixed, but nothing changed.
- disk clean up, nothing changed
- registry clean, nothing changed
- CURRENTLY defragging my C drive, hope something changes..

Anyone know what the heck's going on!?
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?
Anything helps and would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Apps not starting properly, sys. recov. doesn't work, can't shut down properly, etc..

no replies yet?

anyway, just stopped by to say that when shutting down, it takes forever to get to the "Saving your settings..." screen, and that's where I decided that it stops and nothing else after that.

Here's the situation...Every week I ghost copies of our servers. Two Windows 2000 servers and two Windows 2003 servers. Each server has one Western Digital 80GB ide hard drive in a hard drive rack and there is one open rack for inserting the backup hard drives.

I use ghost 2003 on floppies, each is configured to run the ghost backup automatically. When I am ready to ghost, I insert the backup drive, insert the floppy disk and start the server. Ghost loads, backups the drive, and says ghosting is complete. I take the main drive out and replace it with the ghosted copy. The ghost copies for 2000 and 2003 boot up fine, no problems.

When I remove the Ghost copies and reinsert the main drives, the 2003 servers will not boot, but the 2000 servers do. This doesn't happen every week, and sometimes one 2003 server will work and the other won't. When they don't work, the servers post but for some reason don't see the hard drive (this is not the ghost copy). On one of the 2003 servers, I have figured out the problem. When the server won't read the hard drive, I would pull out the drive and reinsert it, fixing the problem.

Recenctly, the other 2003 server wouldn't boot the main drive after it was ghosted. I thought maybe the hard drive bay was bad, so I switched the hard drive out with a spare bay. Reinserted it in the rack and the server still couldn't find the hard drive during boot. If I stick the ghost copy back in... Read more

I am trying to make a complete backup of my system, as opposed to backing up important work files because I am having an upgrade to motherboard and RAM and I don't want the hassle of having to search for CDs etc., to re-install software that is already on.The problem I have is when using Norton Ghost, from SystemWorks. I get as far as starting, copy to CD and then a dialogue appears WRT drivers for USB applications. The system then totally freezes and I have to restart, either with the three fingered salute or by the power button.I have looked in the Ghost manual (PDF doc.) and also on the Symantec website for help but their suggestions don't work. However there is one that I haven't tried and that is, in the manual, it says to shut down all running programmes. The problem is, what do I leave open? I would have thought obviously Ghost or SystemWorks and Explorer but I am unsure and I don't want to do this if it doesn't work. Can anyone advise? Many Thanks. The Teacher

It's kinda strange. Some of my devices (my external HDD and my keyboard) work fine after I completely power down my system and start it up, some don't. My mouse "works" but is screwed "LED doesn't work, touching it causes cursor to fly around with ridiculous speeds". My USB HUB that is built-in my monitor doesn't work at all.

It works when I restart the PC without powering it down (by turning off the PDU). It gets screwed once the MOBO loses power completely. Both the mouse and USB hub in my monitor work perfectly after unplugging and plugging them back in.

Of course I tried the obvious already: moving the devices to another ports, using only some of them and unplugging the rest, updating drivers, disabling selective suspending, disabling the power saving options on USB hub in device manager, playing around with BIOS USB settings. NOTHING works.

Keep in mind that if I unplug the device after win10 starts, and plug it back in, it works perfectly.

It began after I changed my MOBO so I'm sure that MOBO is at fault, but the question is: is it hardware related (and thus I have to live with it, or don't turn down the PDU for the night maybe) or software/driver related and thus fixable.

The devices worked perfectly on previous MOBO so any device malfunction is impossible at this point.

Hey guys, I've been looking all over the internet to find a solution, but failed to find any. I hope you can help me out.

A couple of days ago, I fell asleep in front of my notebook (Asus X54H, which I have for about a year now) and when I woke up, I couldn't connect with the wireless. Hoping it would solve anything so I didn't have to go downstairs to fix it, I decided to restart my notebook. I don't recall seeing a BSOD, but after it showed the Asus logo, there was nothing, just a black screen. This time, I timed how long it took, and after 7 minutes it said: "Windows is loading files". This doesn't take too long, but then I get a black screen again, but this time with a cursor for about a minute. Then I get the Windows 7 background with the cursor and after a minute or two, the System Recovery Options screen appears. There I'm asked to select a keyboard input method (which is Belgian (period) in my case). When I click on next, another window gives me two possibilities:

- Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repair.
- Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier.

As I didn't create any system images, I go for the first one. As there aren't any operating systems loaded, it tells me to click on the Load drivers button. As I don't have a clue what I should do choosing Load drivers, I just click on next. Then the following options are presented to me:

- Startup Repair
- System Restore

I cloned my 6GB hd to an 80GB hd that was limited to 32GB because my system (Windows 98) couldn't handel all 80. I partitioned with FDISK and formatterd with "format c:". I started up and cloned the HD with Norton Ghost making sure to select "Copy Master Boot Record" and "Set Disk Active (for booting OS). After the copy was complete, I switched the jumpers and set new HD to master. Turned on and got "System Disk Error. Replace and press any key." WTF? I put the old drive back in and it booted fine." Put the new drive in = error. Has anybody else had the same probles and has a solution? Any suggestions? Please help!

Answer:Norton Ghost clone doesnt work, "Invalid System Disk" error

The title pretty much says it all. I'm honestly at the end of my rope. Device manager replies all is well, yet sound stopped working overnight.

It isn't muted,I'm not that oblivious.

I own Advanced System Care Pro ( and consequently, Driver Booster ) so I have already all of my drivers up to date, as well as any other problems I might have had.

Used a bunch of other scanners to figure out the problem to no avail. Plugging some headphones in also doesn't cut it, so it made me think that perhaps the hardware was actually fine and some software conflict was the cause of the problem. I have no freaking clue anymore, should I just get mad and yell at my computer for an hour or so to relieve stress now??

Answer:Laptop audio refuses to work, all devices work properly, sound isn't muted. Help?

First we need to know the EXACT make and model number of the laptop in question. Secondly the only place you should be looking for drivers for you laptop is the laptop manufacturers support website. Driver scanners really are not helpful.

My Sat Pro 6100 has just been away for the usual motherboard and power board replacement with Toshiba, but now I have a strange keyboard problem.

When I turn it on, all the keys work. After a few minutes, '3' doesn't work, then 'r' fails, then '5','7','8','9','0' stop working. At this stage I can feel something getting very hot under the middle of the keyboard. A reboot and no keys work. Another reboot with an external PS2 keyboard, and the internal keyboard is still faulty (some keys work, others don't) but the external one works correctly.

Now if the pc didn't get so hot under the middle of the internal keyboard, then I would conclude that the keyboard was faulty, but for it to fail slowly and sequentially like this, and it fails the same way every day (Since the Toshiba rebuild!).

Maybe, internal keyboard controller overheating?
Does anyone know what this might be? :-(

Answer:Keyboard on Sat Pro 6100 doesn't work properly after remedial work

Right under the keyboard of your pro 6100 is the VGA graphics controller (the keyboard cable plugs into the same card). It is normal that this part becomes warm during usage.

It's strange that your problem appears after a while and not right away.

It might be just an improper reseating of the keyboard cable (it's a thin layer like a photo film-negative) that easily pops out, but... it can be something more serious, too. (Especially since you had the upgrade done where hardware had to be changed)

I would consult the service center once again and ask for instructions how to deal with this. Don't ignore it (by using an external keyboard instead of the malfunctioning internal) as it might end up into something more serious soon...

Hello. I've had problem with my friend's laptop (OS - Windows 7 Ultimate). It won't log on to it's fullscreen mode. When I open it, I'm always stuck at Startup Repair error cycle.

Here's what happened: I installed Glary Utilities and used it to uninstall the Adobe CS3 Bundle. Then I installed the CS4 Bundle. After that, I used Glary Utilities again to clean the registry, cookies, missing shortcuts, etc. Then I used its Registry Optimizer feature..after analyzing the system, it said that the computer needed to restart to complete the process. So I restarted it. And that's where I'm left at. I can't open the laptop anymore, I can't even run it on Safe Mode - it's not available. The only available options I will tell below. My theory on this problem is that maybe I or the Glary program have deleted system files that are essential for Windows startup.

Note: I uploaded: a video of what is happening to my friend's laptop during startup; .txt files of the errors; a picture of the ble screen; and a copy this post in a word document (ony, it's not translated into English but the dialog boxes are in English). Here's the link to the files so you could check my problem:

And here's what boxes appear during startup. The red ones are my comments.

Answer:Windows unable to start - Startup Repair and System Restore won't work

Similar problems when trying to restore a system image from a portable HD. I used a bootable USB stick with the Win7 installation files on it and then tried to select a system image from the portable HD. After selecting the image and advancing to the next screen all of the selections would be grayed out and would not let me restore the image. I tried selecting another image from a backup partition on the computers HD and had the same problem. The fix was to repeat the procedure booting from the installation DVD instead of the bootable USB. I am not sure why the DVD worked when the bootable USB failed but it saved me a reinstall. This is an old post but I thought I would share my findings just in case someone has the same problem in the future.

My Dell Inspiron Laptop which runs on Windows Vista will not start properly, the screen will go black after loading, this is before i can get to the log on stage. There is only a cursor which i can move.

I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. I have tried every method I know of, but I cannot get my computer working. Is there any other way, if you know please help me.

Forgive me, this is my first post. I purchased Norton Antivirus 2011, and upon installation, it did not work. After trying activation, registering, and updating via links, I still ran into the issue that Norton would install but not work (not even open up.) I called Norton's Tech support and spent almost 2 hours with a tech on the phone, letting him have remote access only to have him tell me after running Norton's scan (finding 6 threats) that my computer files were currupted and that I would need to do a complete wipe, and reformat my HD. By remote connection, Norton detected/removed the threats but upon the reboot, my system froze when trying to reboot. I ended up having to do the restore option to get my PC to boot up. All my programs are running as they should, but I am unable to remove/reinstall Norton's even with their removal tool unless I am in Safe Mode. Appears these virus/files are preventing me from installing a security system. I am currently running without an Antivirus/Security system outside of what Windows 7's Firewall offers. Any suggestions on how to proceed in cleaning/removing these threats would be greatly appriciated.

Answer:Norton Antivirus won't install properly

I reciently purchased Norton, and am having issues with installing it on my Windows 7. Tried all the stops (updating, re-install,
even tech support) and have been told by Norton's Tech support team that I need to reformat and do a clean install.

Here is a list of all I have tried to date:

1) Uninstalled all security programs outside Windows 7 firewall.
2) Updated the Norton Antivirus via online.
3) Spent 2 hours with Norton's Tech unistalling (only able to unistalled via Safe Mode) Norton Antivirus 2011, then re-installing.
4) Had Norton do a virus scan (via their program) and found 6 risks/virus's.
5) Upon trying to remove said files/virus's via their program, my system froze up trying to restart after removing the said files.
6) I was able to undue/restore in Safe Mode to get my Laptop to work again, but am still unable to load Nortons.

My system is currently working, but all the same, I am unable to get any security system to load. Thus, I am running without any protection. It would appear (via Norton Tech that I have a corrupted PC/Files) that I need a clean install. If anyone can help me with an alternative solution, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all - - I'm using a 3 month old Gateway NV52 running Vista. My free norton anti virus subscription came up a few days ago at which point I decided to uninstall it and use AVG. Uninstalled Norton via control panel uninstall (had internet disconnected at this time) and then promptly downloaded AVG and ran a full scan that came up clean.

Later that evening I noticed that some internet pages were not loading properly (some icons would not load of if the page was heavily javascripted the page would be jumbled). Some pages won't connect to the site but when refreshed a few times it will eventually connect. Some pages such as gmail and others would load with no issues, perhaps a little slower than usual but overall the pages loaded fine. Ebay and Facebook are the sites I check to see if the problem is resolved as they are the two sites I have the most issues with. This issue is present in both IE and Firefox ( I use Firefox mostly).

To attempt to fix my current situation (all to no avail) I have unistalled AVG, installed spyware doctor(paid version), unistalled norton with norton removal tool, reverted to system checkpoints before I had this problem, cleared cache and cookies, and ran a sfc /scannow from cmd window. Sometime in the last roughly 2 weeks I got a virus. Since then I purchases Norton 360 and tried to run a full scan without success. I talked with Norton's customer support and they advised that I have a specially malicious virus that is affecting Norton's ability to run properly but they could send me to their tech team and they can remove it for another $99.99. I feel like I paid for a product that promises to remove viruses and it doesn't so why invest more money into their services?

I've noticed that my computer is slowing down a great deal and Vimax male enhancement ads are on every website I go to and pop up while browsing. When I try to use Google, I click on a result and it redirects me to other search engines. I don't have expierence with figuring things like this out and don't know where to start.

I thought a system recovery would help but do not have the discs and cannot create them on the computer. I have Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware installed on my computer but it will not run or start up, could this virus be affecting this program as well?

Has anyone encountered this problem and know how to help?

Using Firefox

Surfing the web today, Norton detected a Trojan, stopped it and had me restart.

When I restarted, some of my desktop icons weren't showing correctly, and wouldn't start up. (Firefox, Itunes, Windows Media Center, Dell Data Safe, Bloomberg, Excel...and some others.) A generic icon (Blank white box) was there where the real icon used to be.

I still can run some of these programs, but I have to right click on Firefox and hit start. I-tunes forces me to search for the program when I click it.

Tried System Restore but even that was asking me to choose a program to open it. I finally got to the system restore through the control panel, but it didn't seem to work.

I have not installed the Vista service pack 2. I keep having problems with that. 2 weeks ago, the SP2 update failed. When I downloaded it from Microsoft website, and tried to run the .exe the system asked me to choose a program.

It doesn't look like I've lost any files, but I think there is something that jacked up my computer.

I ran a full system Norton scan, and an online Microsoft scan, and they didn't find anything.

I'm not code savvy, but I've been trying to figure this out all day.

for instance....when I go to the Control Panel > Security Center > Check this computer's security (or Firewall status) a box comes up asking me to choose a program to run those exe files....

Hi guys,

Norton 360 subscription expired recently in my uncle's laptop running W7 Home Premium x64. I suggested him free antivirus solutions as Norton was slowing his PC down and moreover there isn't anything important enough on it to warrant paying for an antivirus software.

Anyway, I wanted to install avast. So, I uninstalled Norton from Control Panel, Add or remove programs. After that I ran the Norton removal tool downloaded from their website. After everything finished, I installed avast using the default online installer. It almost installed completely, but was stuck at "Starting awsvc" or something like that for a long time. So I force closed it. Rebooted and reinstalled avast.

Installation completed successfully. But the UI did not startup. Upon checking got to know that the service required wasn't running. I tried running it manually. But I got the "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" error. I removed avast, ran the cleaner tool as suggested and reinstalled it using the offline installer. Same result.

So I removed avast and tried AVG. AVG threw up an error after the installation almost reached completion. Error code was 0x0076043. Got the same result twice.

I tried system restore. But it was too late. All the old restore points were wiped out by then and only the recent ones created during the multiple attempts of installs and uninstalls of AVs were present.

I've got a problem with word 2003 not maximizing properly. Its basically acting like the task bar is at the top of the screen.. it doesnt matter what I try it doesnt seem to correct itself.

Can only close it from task manager - even then windows reports that the program is not responding and have to force windows to end program. The only other way to close it is to shut down and reboot pc - all a bit drastic and time consuming!

I wonder if you can help.
I have a HP Envy Laptop and had Norton Utilities to run a ScanDisk job on start-up.
Unfortunately it looks like it has caused a major problem as my computer won?t properly boot up and Norton Disk Doctor doesn?t go away.
I have tried to get around this obstruction caused by Norton but it won?t go away and I am now getting messages that my computer needs to be repaired.
I managed to boot my computer with a USB drive to capture all data from the hard drive onto an external disk so my data isn?t lost, but when I use HP Recovery Manager on a USB drive, Norton Disk Doctor keeps interfering and won?t let me boot up so I can restore my computer to factory settings again.
It is just a matter of getting past this obstruction caused by Norton to get my computer reset.
Any ideas in what to do with the bios or UEFI settings to get it to boot directly without interference from Norton preventing it from booting as this is what has been the problem beforehand?
Many thanks.

Read Receipts are not tracking properly for one of my bosses.
He is receiving them, and some of the people that have responded with receipts are appearing properly on the tracking tab of the sent e-mail.

This is a mixture of internal and external recipients. The receipts were received over a period of 3 days, what got tracked or didn't get tracked seems to be at random.

We use Exchange 6 (our version is 6.5.7638.1) on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2.
