Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable

Question: Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable

Hi all,
I've just installed Windows 8.1 onto my friend's laptop, a Sony Vaio.
Originally, there are 2 partitions: C for Windows 8.1 (143GB) and D for Data (165GB).

I decreased partition C to 43GB and increased D to 265 GB by using Acronis Disk Director Suite from Hiren's Boot CD. Unfortunately, the process crashed. Partition D's format became RAW and whenever I open it, what I see is "Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable".

What can I do now?
Somebody, please help me.
Thank you very much.

Preferred Solution: Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable

Hi there,
What is your primary goal at the moment to recover the partition or to format it and make is usable? You might try using some kind of partition recovery software, but if the data that's on this partition is important you might think about using professional data recovery services. Good luck.

Good Day all

Im sorry if posting this is in the wrong section.

I'm in desperate need of some advice / help please. My hard drive crashed last night...
What happened was, i shutdown my pc and when powering up again it came with a repairing disk (running chkdsk) and then it didn't finish, so restarted again to no avail...sometimes boots to just before Windows then hangs just before login screen (stuck on black screen)

I setup another Hard drive and booted from it to Windows, and can see in Disk manager this particular disk shows Healthy Partition, and even shows the correct amount of Free space prior to the incident.

But when trying to browse the drive it shows "Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable." ( will add a pic if needed)
Hard drive is still fairly new, health was excellent in HD Sentinel prior to it happening the works.

Some people suggested running Chkdsk again, but im too scared to do so since, might repair and leave me with just a bunch of CHK files.

I got a quote from Data recovery services but it is insanely expensive.

Please anyone with some advice / help how to fix this, im going out of my mind here, it was a 500GB drive and all my data was on there. I will even go as far as making a PayPal contribution to the one that manages to solve this for me.

Thanks for reading and in advance.

I would try this program: Free Data Recovery Software Download to Recover Deleted Files - EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition to salvage data first without changing anything on that disk.

Based on what I read on this thread: Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable I did everything as instructed by Jumanji..

However, my case is similar to this one :
Corrupted disk structure, tried repair, only found one partition.

Tried GetDataBack by NTFS (not simple edition) and got the same result as the user named "neoplasm".

Tried to run TestDisk and repair MFT. The result I got was "Can't read NTFS MFT.'
Dont think I can run PhotoRec because I dont have any other HDD to store recovered files..

Right now I am running Easeus that was suggested by Anshad Nervana. Hopefully this stuff will work. However I really do hope someone can help me up on this.

P/s: Jumanji you you ever read this please help me

A WD My Passport 2TB USB drive started giving me beeps at startup and shutdown a few days ago. Today I cannot access the drive contents and get the message in the thread title. I also got messages before this saying the disk needed to be formatted. Tried a new cable from another WD My Passport, didn't change anything. Tried it on another computer, same message.

Right click drive, Properties > Tools Tab > Check Now. Says Windows cannot access the drive.

Have I permanently lost the drive contents?

Answer:Disk structure is corrupt and unreadable

OP again. Tried this: run > cmd > chkdsk e: /f

See the attached for the result. The prompt in the box is blinking but nothing seems to be happening.

Tried Recuva. Disk not accessible.

Pandora Recovery, "device not ready", it's greyed out.

Tried wiping free space with CCleaner. Says the drive has an unrecognized file system.

In Manage, I see the drive is shown as RAW. Also, tried changing the drive letter, but this brings up "the drive needs to be reformatted".

I have IOmega 1 TB hard drive. 2 days ago, my comp restarted suddenly after which my external drive is corrupted.

I get the error 'H: is not accessble' The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.
It shows up in the disk management as RAW file system,

I have almost 700 GB of important documents, pictures & files that I don't want to lose.
Does anybody know of any good recovery software that can help.

Answer:Hard disk Error - The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

Hi r4hara,

Welcome to SevenForums.

You seem to have lost the partition somehow and that seems to be the reason why it had turned RAW.

IMO, the best free software to do the recovery from a RAW disk is Test Disk. TestDisk - CGSecurity

It can be a little daunting for the first time user, and so take your time to read through all the documentation.

First use PhotoRec in it - which does not write anything to the drive in question - and try to recover the files.

Then you can use TestDisk and try to rewrite the partition. Some people have reported that even after restoring the partition with TestDisk, the drive remained RAW but they were able to recover most files using the option to copy.

Whether PhotoRec or TestDisk, it is going to take a lot of time to recover the files. Copy them to another external drive with adequate capacity.

You may find some help here to understand the usage.

Guide to using PhotoRec recovery software.

Good luck.

My post is related to this thread.
I need help!
Having same problem where the solution stated doesn't really works.
The thing is that i cancelled a scan and interrupted it in between (esset nod 32) and since then I'm not able to open my drives, giving the above error.
Just canceling or interruption with a scan can't take out my 400gb of data off my hands.
I have registered just so because you guys are the only one's having the fix. But I don't want to go through all that just because I know my hard drive isn't dead or anything it was working fine and I decided to scan it and then canceled it as well and then I'm not able to open any drive.
Kindly help.

Answer:disk structure is curropted or unreadable

Cancelling a virus scan alone should not cause boot failure. Did you suspect you had a virus or malware?

You aren't clear if you can boot into Windows or not. If not: run Startup Repair (you may have to run it 3 times) from your Windows install disk and report back. If in you can boot into Windows: run Chkdsk from the command prompt and report back.

HELP

I am sitting here with a notebook and a desktop, plus I have a cavalry 500GB USB hard drive.

At first I could not get the USB hard drive to show up, so I tried a different cable, and it started working. With the new cable I was able to see the USB hard drive and play a song on it.

Now the USB hard drive is telling me that it is not accessible, and the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS PLEASE?

thanks

Answer:disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.....

I don't have a solution, but note I have found the following about USB drives (hard or CD/DVD), through experience.
USB drives can be very unstable
Firewire (aka IEEE 1394) external drives are rock solid
This does not help you with your Notebook, but may explain your problem.

This external HDD is my backup and I would like to get it back.
If possible with data, if this is not possible just back so that I can re use it.

Hi Keval and welcome to Tenforums.

For corrupted partitions/partition tables/MFT/files try TestDisk.

For data recovery, you could trial some free software:
ZAR
Recuva

Seatools for Windows will check the health of the disk. You certainly don't want to use it if it's failed/failing.

Another possibility is the PCB inside the external enclosure may have gone bad. In this case, you could remove the drive from the enclosure, hook it up to an adapter and grab your data off it that way, or buy a new enclosure to mount it in. However, if your drive is a WD, chances are that's not possible, because they now solder their drives to the PCBs.

Hope that helps.

Hi, I'm using Windows 7 on an SSD. Since last (2/20) Windows update, the system has been acting strangely with logging mouse clicks. Processes are low, doesn't look like anything running in the background. When I tried to do a system restore to before the update, it told me that "the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable". When I tried to fix, since it's the c drive, it said I had to schedule it, which I did, and nothing happened. Rebooted myself, and doesn't seem to have tried to do the restore.

Any suggestions?

I have Vista 64 installed on a dual boot computer. It worked fine until I put someone else's hard drive in my computer to see if there drive was bad. I tried running system restore and bootrec.exe and under every option I tried to run I get "the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable". Now what? Is the drive toast? When booting it tries to run CHKDSK but aborts with master table corrupt.

Answer:Disk structure is corrupted and unreadable

Try Testdisk. It can fix your type of problems. You will probably need to know how your disk was structured i.e. how many partitions and type of partitions.TestDisk is powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Test...It should be able to repair your MFThttp://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Adva...Repair An NTFS MFTThe MFT (Master File Table) is sometimes corrupted. If Microsoft's Checkdisk (chkdsk) failed to repair the MFT, run TestDisk. In the Advanced menu, select your NTFS partition, choose Boot, then Repair MFT. TestDisk will compare the MFT and MFT mirror (its backup). If the MFT is damaged, it will try to repair the MFT using the backup. If the MFT backup is damaged, it will use the main MFT.___________________________________________? When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Hello,
long time no see.

Anyway, I am concerned as I've received this message several times now, when attempting to save a .JPG image in Photoshop CS4 to my D: partition.

The message I receive is:
"D:Path\of\image.jpg
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable"

I managed to 'dodge' this with chkdsk. I chose to run it on the next PC restart, and once it had finished and I was inside of Windows, I could save files from Photoshop to D: again. However, after saving 3-4 JPG files, the message popped-up again..

I am defragmentating my disk now, but I'd like to have some professional advice and guidance here.

Thank you very much in advance and best regards.
Chris

Hi, I'm trying to get a USB dvd/cdrw drive to work for a friend. Its a storix optical series model stxdvdcdrw. According to the documentation Its supposed to work with xp drivers. You might have a corruption with the USB interface....try deleting it from the device manager, reboot...and then plug it back in & let it auto re-install.

Unplug it, reboot, then note the time and plug it in. Go to your event logs (Cntl Panel, Admin Tool, Event viewer) and look for a yellow ! or red X at the time stamp when you plugged in the drive, see what clues it gives...

Hello there!

Excuse me, as I'm new, but I hope this is in the right place.
I was recently torrenting some things with Vuze, however my computer froze up and wouldn't respond for a few hours. So, after waiting, I forced it to power-down. However, when I rebooted, I opened Vuze, and my torrent Library was empty. After trying a few things, I figured I should try to uninstall and reinstall Vuze. When it came to running the installer, when I attempted to reinstall, the installer told me that I didn't have permission to set the file directory. Then I tried to open some programms and I was met my this nasty little message (each program is slightly different) as a note coming from the task bar:

Quote:

the file system structure on the disk is corrupted and unusable. Please run the Chkdsk utility on the Volume C:.

Opening iTunes, I get that message along with a dialogue which says:

Quote:

The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.

Then it fails to open.

Word, along with the taskbar message, says:

Quote:

Work could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.

It opens, but the save icon is unresponsive.

Steam opens without any problems. Spotify freezes on starttup. Attempting to install AVG TuneUp to fix the problem, I get the dialog box:

A hard disk devided to two partitions: (C - for OS Win XP Pro) and (D - 2nd partition).
The problem is, when i start the pc (windows was running but immediately restarted automatically - repeated). I take out the hard disk and installed it as a slave drive to other pc for data recovery before repair/format the problem hard disk.

FYI, the 2nd partition can be accessed and read. But the 1st partition of the hard disk (for OS) appeared this error when i try to open it : "THE DISK STRUCTURE IS CORRUPTED AND UNREADABLE". Is anyone can help me to solve this problem?

Hi All,

My computer wasn't booting, saying something about drive not accessible so took out HDD and plugged it into another PC, it tried to run chkdsk but wasn't allowed because "corrupt master file table". Tried to access it on another computer and came up with "Disk structure is corrupt and not readable". I have since formatted the HDD, read another post on this forum as to how to recover files and fix the problem but what i really want to know is, WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? And how can i prevent it from happening again? Is my HDD on its way out and need to be replaced? Did i do something wrong cause i only formatted it about a week ago due to viruses...

Any help greatly appreciated!

Answer:Disk structure is corrupt and not readable

I would replace that hard drive, then save the exisiting one for saving data or special projects... but beware that you may have some other serious, but intermittent, problem with the computer... Likely a power supply, or cable jack, or other issue.
You didn't tell us the age of your system, or brand, or brand or hard drive. It is always easy to speculate about the computer of somebody else...
You can possibly prevent it by spending some money for an uninterruptible power supply with battery that connects between your computer and the wall, being sure you have a quality power supply, assuring that all people who use that computer follow good procedures for shut down, backing up your data religiously, installing more memory than you need, replacing your optical drive every year whether it seems bad or not, and thinking pure thoughts.
Good luck to you. If anything goes awry, please let us know.

Sigh... I have a Western Digital Caviar 250 GB SATAII running as my master hard drive and then I have a Maxtor 80GB IDE hard drive running as a slave for storage.

I used the Maxtor for backing up all my files and where I kept all my installation executables on so if I ever reformatted I wouldn't have to raid the Internet for everything since I could just reinstall it all right away from the Maxtor. I don't recall anything to important fortunately but to save me many pain staking hours I would really like to know if I could get it back.

On to the problem, I was defragmenting my hard drives and decided to run "CHKDSK" on startup. I'm not sure If any errors occurred because I went for a cat nap as it did its thing. I came downstairs to discover that when I went into "My computer" and tried to open "D:" (Maxtor hard drive) this error shows up which hadn't happened before.

D:\ is not accessable.
The disk structure is corrupt and unreadable.

I don't know about you but this doesn't sound like a good thing...
While the drive is still displayed in "My computer" its no longer on the defraging list in Diskeeper.

I'll go look it up on google but are their any suggestions on what I should do now to get the information back?

I am working on someones laptop with the complaint that the DVD drive stopped working. It was working last night. Running W7 32 bit.

I tried to play some CDs and DVDs in Windows. Tried to boot a Linux disk, a Partition Wizard Disk, an Acronis Boot disk, a Windows 7 Disk. No play, no boot.

In Windows Explorer, with a Sims disk in the drive, double click brings up the error message: E:\ is not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

In Disk Management the CD-ROM drive shows. I can change the drive letter. It shows "383.58GB RAW"

In Device Manager: very strange. The
"Optiarc DVD-RW AD-7530B"
device (as I recorded when I installed the OS over a year ago) no shows up as
"Oxtiazc (D^D(R_ID-7=38B"

I ran the Microsoft Mr Fix It - Mats/DVD.RUN and it found no issues.

I Removed the Drive from Device Manager and restarted. It installed the same garbled device. There is no Roll Back Driver. There is no Update driver.

The only thing that she thinks was changed was she installed 3 Windows Updates that came through today. But I did a System Restore to before that install and no change.
An hour ago there were the 3 updates available again. Just now there is only one. ???

I've run out of ideas. Anyone seen this one before? Dead Drive?

(I love this forum).

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of problems with my USB thumb-drive. Whenever I try to format it (via Windows) it says "The disk is write protected." and on accessing, it gives the following error,

"The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable".

I decided to look-up on internet to get this solved but didn't find any solution.

It shows up under Disk Management as "RAW". There is no data in the drive (even if it is some, it's not worthy). Any fixes?

I'm using Windows 7 32-bit. I tried a lot of stuff but failed to get this up and running.

Answer:"The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable."

Any help?

Hi guys. A few day ago, when I tried to started my laptop (hp probook 4534s), i got disk check. After that when I try to download something i get this error ("The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable") and I cant download it.
And when i try to install mozilla firefox i get new 7-zip error ("can not create temp folder archive")... Please somebody help me

Answer:"The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable"

Perhaps the disk check was just a simple scan, or was interupted.

Run a Full scan with Repair:
Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click on Command Prompt > choose Run As Administrator
Type: chkdsk /r and then hit enter (This is providing there is only one disk and it is the one with the OS on it)
You will get a warning and you will be asked to run diskcheck at the next startup > say yes.
Restart the computer
Do not interrupt the process.

I am attempting to copy a CD to another CD. I have permission from the provider of the original CD. (Disclaimer)
I can burn other files using the same CD/DVD Hardware, Bastiat-The Law, for instance and recommended, without problems.
The original CD reads and operates fine, opens the html pages, active links link etc.
Copied the original CD to HD and no issues there.
I have tried copying using a disk copy utility, Roxio, and Drag & Drop method with same result, Fisk Struc Corr... When I first attempted this I indicated within Roxio that I wanted 10 copies, the software went through typical reading, writing, eject, load new disk etc. I then tested the burn and get the error. After the write, Roxio does indicate that the disk in F is not a blank recordable disk.
I downladed a driver update utility from MG, great resource by the way, and the drivers are current. The hardware is original factory installed Samsung SD-616T DVD and SW-240B CD-R/RW.
I'm reviewing previous posts but thought I throw this out if anyone has an idea while I still have blank CD's available.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Copy CD-Structure Corrupted and Unreadable

Maybe copy protection?
Try making an ISO (image) of the CD onto your hard drive.
Then burn the image to another CD using an image burner (DO NOT copy it, it'll just copy the 1 large image(iso) file)

Afternoon all.
Something strange happened yesterday, which i cannot figure out.

I have 3 disk drives, 2 150 gb drives and a 75 gb drive, and they all show up on the start > computer window. Until yesterday.

The 3rd (smaller) drive suddenly showed up as "corrupt or unreadable" and would not let me access it. as if that wasnt bad enough, my DVD drive then went and done exactly the same thing, for no reason whatsoever.

First things first then: The DVD drive. I went to google and found a technique where you go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and changed the registrys. This bit has been sorted.

Back to the 75 gb disk drive: it now wont show up on the start > computer window at all. Even on the F8 boot menu it wont show up. The only way it will show up is if I insert my Vista disc in, and then it will show up on the first screen or two of the installation process.

This has meant that the GetDataBack program cant even find the faulty drive in order to carry these unreadable files over to, say, hard disk no.2.
Only the Vista installation agknowledges it as being connected.

Assuming that the DVD drive bit should be quite straightforward at this point, it leaves me with just the problem of the disk drive.

How can I access these files, and drag them over to another drive with the view of reformatting the thing afterwards?

And will this happen again? is this 75 gb drive reliable enough?

Hope you can help. Thanks.

Corrupt OLE Structure

HI, I am trying to recover an excel file:

The file was on a USB pen stick. I am unable to to open the file which is 80kb in size and just had text and numbers in it (ie no macros or formulas).

There were 2 worksheets in the file. I have opened and worked on the file numerous times before with no problem opening it. When I last worked on it I edited some data, added the second worksheet, saved the file, and then changed the file name.

When I now try to open it, it comes up with the message as below:

"file cannot be accessed.. the file may be read-only or you may be trying to access a read only location, or the server the document is stored on may not be responding" and "unable to read file"

My PC is Windows XP, and the Excel file was originally created in Microsoft Office 2003.

1) I have tried to open the file using Google Docs, Open Office, ExcelViewer but no luck.... it comes up with the message"file invalid". I have tried recovery tools including "Pandora Recovery" and managed to recover a tmp file from my USB stick which may be an old copy of the file, and opened it using WORDPAD, but it did not display the data, only a bunch of characters.

2) I have tried the data recovery tool "Repair my Excel" which scanned the file and then came up with the following messages

File Open - OK

OLE Header - OK

OLE Header Structure Corrupt - X

Reading BIFF - OK... Read more

Hi, i have a Windows XP Pro XP2 which is about 5 years old.

Recently when running asquared software to scan my system because i wanted to make sure my PC was clean i got a message from the taskbar that said
"C:\$Mft corrupt and unreadable"

I've never gotten that message before from anything else, this is the first time and like i said It was while doing a "Deep Scan" with A squared.

How serious is this, and is there a way to fix it before it starts affecting my computer?

Answer:C:\$Mft corrupt and unreadable

A couple of things you can try. First, if you have SP2 on your installation disc, run sfc /scannow. If you don't have SP2 on the installation disc you can slistream it using the instructions here. If that doesn't work, try running chkdsk /r from the recovery console.

To run the chkdsk utility click start , click run , then type in the box chkdsk , click OK and a box will open and run chkdsk for you. If you wish to install the msn toolbar then take a look at your first post , the words MSN and search are in green ,hover your mouse over them and a box opens. At the bottom of this box is the link msntoolbar.cubesearch.co.uk , click on this for a link to where you can get the toolbar from. And yes , the answer to your final question is we all get these problems from time to time , you are not the first person to ever be blighted by problem after problem and I can assure you that you will most definately not be the last so chin up !

Situation:

So here's the situation. I'm trying to see if I can bring back this old HP desktop computer that I've had in my basement for awhile now, a little over 1 1/2 years due to an error that at the time I couldn't diagnose. I guess you could say we can bring him back, we have the technology, haha. I've tried experimenting with the computer by running a couple tests before creating this thread, I did not take the computer apart at all, here is what I know:

- When you boot up the computer and it gets past the part where it shows the HP logo and all the shortcuts to the tools, it will get stuck at the screen with the flashing underscore ( _ ) / the black screen. You can also notice a very subtle screen flash in the black area approximately every second.

- I can access the bios screen, so that immediately told me that this couldn't be an issue with the computer's motherboard, then again, there's always the possibility it still could be.

- I've went into the BIOs and I tried changing the boot order so that the DVD Drive booted before the HDD. I then proceeded to try to run multiple types of discs on it, this included Ubuntu, Seagate HDD Tester, ... Read more

Hi.

I have an external hard drive that failed today. I presume it's because I have a loose USB cable, and it got pulled out while the drive was being used. Anyway, there's information on that drive that I really do not want to lose. Windows actually asked me to format the drive, but I don't want to do that. Is there anything I can do to get my data back?

I thought about formatting and then using a data recovery program, but there's no guarantee that I'll get all my data back, is there?

Oh, and I can hear the drive spinning just fine, so I don't think it's gone beyond hope. I'm pretty sure a format would put it back to a state where I can use it...it's just that all my data will be gone.

Greetings everyone,

I've got a question that's been bugging me for a while now. I've just never gotten around to dealing with it because while it's annoying it's not that serious.

That said, I've been getting messages from my PC that says such and such file is corrupt:

several aol related files, some of my downloaded videos (cannot delete them anymore), temporary internet files, M$ft (or something like that), etc.

So anyone know how I can fix or get rid of these pests? =)

I use one of those mini video recording devices (ie. cctv, spy cams, pin hole cams) that takes mini sd cards to record on to.

My question is, lately I've been getting "unreadable or corrupt" files and therefore I can't transfer the files onto my hard drive. The memory size is accurate (so it seems data has been recorded) but the file itself is not movable or able to be copied due to the error message.

It happens to about 10% of all my recordings (so 1 in 10 video files is unreadable/corrupt and the other 9 are all ok and transferrable).

What I'd like to know is what is the cause of this error? Is MORE likely that there is something wrong the mini sd card itself or MORE likely that the error is being caused by the device / mainboard and screwing up the file during saving?

I've done various things like chkdsk, error scan/reporting, mini sd format, and each time it still makes those unreadable/corrupt files.

I'm wondering what is is more likely to be the cause of this problem?

Answer:Unreadable or corrupt file

I'm also wondering if possible a dying battery or battery that is shortened in life may cause these unreadable/corrupt video files when it's trying to save it?

The video recording doesn't stop or die in the middle of recording. It completes the recording and I can start recording another file or just turn it off. It's only when I plug in the usb cable and attempt to transfer the files that some of them end up being unreadable/corrupt.

I have a laptop that runs Windows XP and every time I start the computer, it says the volume is dirty and it runs through a system check. When I run Avast virus scan, it tells me that it couldn't scan this file - C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Recovery\Last Active. It says that the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable (1392). How do I fix this? And if I do fix this, will it take care of the volume is dirty problem?

Answer:corrupt or unreadable file

Your hdd is comprised of clusters, and a dirty volume means that one of these clusters is damaged.Try running chkdsk /rGo to Start, click on Run, and type cmd in the box and then click OK.A black page like the one below will open with a blinking cursor, type in the chkdsk /r then press the Enter key.

Hi,

I am getting an error message about two documents that are corrupt and unreadable. I have tried to delete them by putting them in the trash, but the error message is: ntitled- Notepad: NOTEPAD.EXE - Corrupt File. The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings\C\My Documents is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

When I tried to run Chkdsk it wouldn't run, said I needed to restart. Unfortunately, I get an error message there, too.

I also tried deleting the files in DOS, but got the same corrup and unreadable error messages.

As I do not have the XP installation CD, I tried running ComboFix. The instructions suggested that I send the ComboFix Log file to an authorized helper. Please see attached.

Both files are Notepad files, and they are titled Rescued document and Rescued document 1.

First, can I remove these files? Second, if drastic measures are needed to remove them such as doing a complete system recovery, do they present any danger? Or are they just a minor irritation, that is an error dialog message will pop-up when I rerun CCleaner?

Sorry the post is so long. Am trying to give you as much information as I can.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Corrupt and Unreadable Documents.

Run chkdsk /r, as instructed.

Start/Run..type chkdsk /r (with space between k and /) and hit Enter. Type Y in response to onscreen query and hit Enter.

Reboot the system and let the command run, it will boot into XP when done.

A corrupt/unreadable document is a damaged file or a file which is on what are called bad sectors. The chkdsk /r will try to make the document readable/move it to a good location.

"The file or directory C:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk utility"

I have run the chkdsk utility during reboot several times, it goes off for sometime and then comes back. Is there any solution to solve this issue ?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:C:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable

Hi Arun

Unfortunately, all the articles I've ever seen regarding this error have required either a clean reinstall, or a repair ("in-place") reinstall of Windows XP. [The clean install, as you know, involves wiping the drive]. I haven't had seen any computers myself with this error, so I have to speak from research only.

Microsoft's generic article for this sort of error is here --- http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;246026

An often-cited thread at Expert's Exchange concerning your exact error --- http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._21647733.html --- This thread at one point puts the summary this way:
"C:\$Secure is a metadata file kept by NTFS holding the database of drive
security settings. If it becomes fully corrupted, you'll lose access to the
drive."

Should you find any solutions other than those requiring reinstallation, I'd be interested to hear them.

Best of luck

I really hope someone can help me. I left my computer unattended for a short while and when I returned to it the log on screen was showing but it was showing an error message about the logonui.exe being corrupt etc and said that I should run a disk check.

Trouble is, the comp refuses to run one. It also refuses to run the installation disc to enable me to do a repair installation. Re-booting the comp in safe mode just takes me to the frozen log on screen and I can't even turn the computer off properly. This is all extremely frustrating, I'd at least have a go at fixing it if I could actually get in to any of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you try to detect the hard drive in the BIOS - is it detected?

Open the machine - remove the power and data cables from the device, and put them back in again - now what?

Run the machine with the cover off - is the hard drive making any bad clicking, grinding sounds?

Can you try removing the drive, and running it in another machine? Is it detected there??

I've been using Windows XP Home Edition for 5 years without too much problem. Recently, I have to do a reboot 2 or 3 times before XP boots up. It sticks half way through the boot up sequence. After the POST the xp screen displays and the blue bars go across the screen, the screen freezes but the hard drive carries on working. Now and again the CHKDSK utility kicks in automatically and always the same message displays change.log is corrupt and unreadable when the computer boots up message displays change.log deleted.

Do I need to do a reinstall of XP?

Answer:change.log corrupt & unreadable

I would start by booting into the Recovery Console and running CHKDSK. See if it finds any errors and corrects them.

Do you have a Windows XP disk that came with the computer?

I ran chkdsk last night, as I do once a month to be on the safe side. Only problem is, my cat knocked the power cord out of the wall, and the comp basically got shut off in the middle of step 4 of 5. I rebooted, everythign worked fine for about an hour or two, everything, including firefox was working just fine. Then I went to open firefox again, and I got some sort of error with C:/$Storage, and I was told to run chkdsk. It then would not let me open firefox, and it was saying that it was not even installed. I tried to run my registry repair and cleaner program, but that was also listed as uninstalled and recieved the same error. I brought up Internet Explorer, and I got the error, but it still came up, as did task manager. Finally, I went and scheduled the chkdsk, then tried to restart the computer. The same error would not let me log out. I ended the login task to force the logout, and I got some error window that just kept popping up. Finally, I hard rebooted, and tried the repair and everything. Except, now it is saying the C drive is corrupted and unreadable, and in the drive properties it is listed as 0 bytes used, 0 bytes available, and I when I try to run chkdsk, it says it cannot connect to the drive. System Repair doesn't work, and there are no restore points(Which is funny, considering I created one before I initially ran chkdsk the first time)
When I start the recovery mode, I get prompted to choose my keyboard setting(I choose US) then it asks me to boot my... Read more

Hi, I am having trouble copying files to a portable harddrive.
I copied some things from an old computer, then put it on my new computer, and I can only read the files on the portable harddrive.

If I try to write any files to the harddrive, I get the following error:

the file or directory H:\$secure is corrupt and unreadable.
Please run the chkdsk utility.Click to expand...

If I run chkdsk on "H:", first it comes up saying it can only continue in read-only mode,
then it comes up saying "error found - but it cannot continue in read-only mode.

Any ideas how I can get this fixed without having to back up everything to another harddrive, and re-formatting H:?

Help!

I'm using XP pro. first this os has caused my pc to stall, crawl and reboot randomly. I got tech support from microsoft and think that issue may have been resolved.

Yesterday (Aug. 17. 2004) the strangest thing happened. I lost access to my D drive. I have two hd's on my system. C and D. The D drive is where I save all my data and now I cant access it. When I try, I get a pop up error stating "D:\ is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

Is there anyway to salvage this drive and/or data? All my work is on this drive and I'll be lost without it.

Please help me ASAP.

Thank you in advance,

I have a 250 GB Maxtor external drive. 99% of the drive is OK, I just have several files that will not delete and I get the "cannon delete xyz the file is corrupt and unreadable. How can i delete these files.

What is also strange is that two other files were deleted and reside in the recycle bin of my laptop but I cannot delete them from the recycle bin either, when I select "empty recycle bin"
I get "cannot read for source or disk"

Strange.

Thanks

when I log on to msn I get a message saying the below file is corrupt, unreadable and recommends I use chkdsk(I'm not sure how to use this, I tried to use it, dont think it worked). Msn still works, so I don't really know the effects of this corruptness, except a different display pic comes up every time i log on.

The location of the corrupt file is;
documents and settings/pc user/Application Data/MSN messenger/2470070473/listcache.dat

I put this listcache thing into the recycle bin, but then I restored it in case it was important. What should I do about it? There may be other corrupt files that I dont know about. I was in the process of defragmenting the pc today, but a pop up came up saying it couldnt work because of the above file (something like that :))

Answer:Corrupt and unreadable file

From what I can tell it is just a cashe file.

Try putting it back in the recycle bin, then log in and see if the file rebuilds itself or if errors are generated from the removal. If all else fails, just restore the file as you did previously.

After a storm knocked out my power while I was at work , along with shutting down my laptop as I'm guessing it was plugged in, my hard drive has said the c:/ is not accessible, file or directory is corrupt or unreadable

So I'm wondering where I go from here. Can it be fixed or is the drive now dead? I can still boot up my laptop normally, as well as open things in folders or run programs. However I can't clivk or explore the drive without getting the alert, I can't save or delete any files, nor can I move them.

I ran an sfc/ scannow but it failed at 13%

Hello guys in need of a little help in better understanding this Error before ill just give a little background history on the issue, in December i had replace my HDD for a Seagate 1TB however if around a week and a half i started to notice a whole bunch of hangs and programs not responding after weeks of trying to figure out what was causing it i just brought it in to Canada Computers knowing it most likely was the HDD because it was making soft clicks constantly once that got fix i haven't had any problems for 2 months now but earlier this week i started to notice small hangs once in a while when i started some stuff like chrome but that seems to be normal with it and everything would work smoothly.
what has me worried now lately some folders will take a few seconds longer to load and when it gets real slow if have itunes running it will stop until the search bar finishes (normally happens after i had just turned on my PC) other than that it loads them just fine later on through out the day, but today i noticed more hangs that usual like when i was playing PayDay2 it hung for around 30secs twice so i checked Event viewer and that's when i saw the Ntfs Error.

I dont have a clue ...during boot up, my laptop flashed a screen reading (something like) "checking file system on c:
type of file NTFS"
and then gave me 9 seconds to allow or not...had no clue so i let it...WOW
it started checking and quickly showed a full screen of lines reading "inserting an index entry into index $0 of file 31752" with the last line just blinking...forever. i finally shut down by holding the power button. when i restarted, at the option to not check for consistancy, i said no. When desktop opened, i was flooded with alerts that many files were corrupt and unreadable...i would guess at least 50. i ran Eusing registry cleaner and after that i was left with only 2 alerts...one related to a fonts tff file,(c:\windows\fonts\margett.tff) is corrupt and unreadable, and the infamous c:\$extend\$ObjId is corrupt and unreadable.
in google, this seems to happening a lot. i hadn't used that computer in quite a while, so last week i updated all of my security programs...didnt seem to cause any probs at the time.
any advice would, of course, be appreciated.

A friend of mine recently dropped his external hdd on teh ground, and gave it a good stroke. I had him chkdsk /r it; and it fixed it, for the most part. but he says there are random files now that he cant access, edit, or delete.

I read on micrsoft that the solution is to back up - format - and retrieve; without the corrupted files of course. I figured I would check here first and see if there are any other options that may be able to save the files.

Thanks,

I have a CBS.log file that is corrupt. Anyone else run into this issue before?

Every time I boot up this Dell Inspiron laptop, it wants to run Chkdsk before startup. Yet it never seems to help. Every time I try to install Vista SP 2 or some Dell Inspiron drivers, a pop-up window down by the taskbar displays:

"The file or directory C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.log is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

I tried running FileAssassin, Unlocker and KillBox so far. I even tried booting into the Windows Vista/7 recovery options - tried deleting the file within the command prompt and ran Startup Repair for kicks. Even System File Checker doesn't work, it stalls at about 58%. I tried SFC under both Vista and 7 PEs to be sure. Using the 7 PE, it says there's something else "pending" and couldn't complete, not much of a revelation.

So, fellow Geeks, any tips for solving this particular issue? Any idea why the log file keeps showing me a pop-up whenever I try to run an installation? I know a complete wipe of the drive might be in order, but I got some time left to mess around. Thanks.

A few months ago, I sold my grandfather my old PC. It's an HP (sorry don't remember the exact model) that we purchased 2001. We upgraded the computer from Windows XP to Windows 7. He is pretty computer illiterate, so it has basically sat in a room and not been used much for the last few months. Today, he called me with a problem so I went by to check it out. Sorry if I'm not specific enough with my details, but I've got the gist of it

On startup, a dialog box comes up saying that windows is attempting to repair itself and that windows may restart several times throughout this process. After a while, the box says that windows was unable to repair itself and asks if I'd like to send a report or not. After clicking "send report" or "don't send report" it gives me the option to either finish, or cancel. If I click "finish" the computer shuts down. If I click "cancel" the computer restarts.

I tried to do a system restore, but it said that the restore wasn't completed and that some files may be corrupt.

So at this point I tried to do a repair installation of windows. This took me to the same screen that I encountered to begin with.

So then I decided to do a clean install of Windows 7. At the very end of the installation process, I got a message that said something along the lines of "C:\windows.old.000\windows\serving.packages is corrupt and unreadable". I then got another message saying that "c:\windows.old.000\... Read more

My sister's laptop is getting the following error messages every time she turns on or off her computer.

"the file or directory C: is corrupt or unreadable please run the chkdsk utility"

"windows logon: logonui.exe - corrupt file"

I told her over the phone to do a full scan with nortons which didn't find anything so i told her to install & run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free edition & it found 26 items which are now removed. We tried running the CHKDSK utility but every time we try starting it the screen disappears & doesn't run. I did some google searches & read the problem may be a hidden file is damaged & the only way to fix it is to reinstall windows or the hard drive is failing. In a couple of weeks my sister will let me reinstall windows vista for her but if their's anything else we can try before then i would appreciate it.

P.S. Her OS is Windows Vista Home Premium.

Hi, I am having problems with my laptop

I can no longer access certain internet sites, such as my gmail account and facebook, seemingly no sites that i usually use will open - but can access this forum plus school email and random others

application errors often pop up for things like
MOM.EXE, ieuser.exe accompanied by the following

Han\Users\AppData\Roaming is corrupt and unreadable

some of my programs will not open for example Mozilla Firefox

i can answer questions but obviouly dont know anything about computers. My malware protection is out of date and I don't know why this has happened OR what to do about that or any of my problems.

I use wireless internet connections at school and at home and simply bought my computer (not knowing anything but what the salesman told me, eg. This is all you need!) Until now everything has been smooth.

Any help would be much appreciated, even if that is simply that i need virus protection, rebooting or to pay a compter tech! I have really no idea what to do and wish to avoid further problems and being ripped off!

Thanks everyone

Han

Answer:AppData\Roaming corrupt and unreadable!

When running into unknown problems a reboot (also known as a Restart) is a good and quick attempted fix. I think, the way Windows gets messed up, that a reboot a day is a good idea, although not as necessary now as in the good ol' days of Windows 98SE and earlier.

I assume from 'AppData' and 'Roaming' that you have Vista.

Click on the Start orb - click Computer - right click on your hard drive (probably C) - click on Properties - click on the Tools tab - click the Check Now button - make sure both options are checked and click on Start.

You'll get a message that errors can't be fixed while Windows is using the disk. Accept the offer to run the disk check on the next boot, and Restart your system. This may clean up some of the corruption.

EDIT: This will take time. An hour. Or hours.
Report back on what problems (maybe all of them) still exist.

My guess on why your malware protection is out of date: you are using a Norton or McAfee or other Security Suite that was pre-installed with a short trial subscription of 30 to 90 days. You are now past due making the decision (and acting on the decision) to pay for another year of updates or to uninstall the beast and choose a combination of freeware to give you your needed protection. I opt for the freeware choice (with one exception) but for you I advise sticking with your Security Suite, or replacing it with another, for a year, during which time you can learn more about the various threats,... Hello,

I've run CCleaner.exe numerous times this week and each time a caption pops up on the lower right hand screen. The first one says "C:\ProgramData\avg8\scanlogs is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility" and the other one says "C:\Users\toshiba\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\TemporaryInternetFiles\Content.IE5\2F0BYF07 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utilty".

I ran the chkdsk utility (I've got Vista so I typed "chkdsk" into the start menu search function). But when I click on "chkdsk," it opens for a half-second and then disappears. It seems nothing happens.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Thanks

I have a laptop installed with Window vista business and I am receiving Corrupt or unreadable files on diskeeper. Please run chkdsk utility. The problem is that you cannot finish signing on, because it restarts after it gives you this message during the initial signon. It continually restarts over and over. I have tried signing on in safe mode, but when I try to run chkdsk it says that it can not run, because the disk is being used and it asks me to schedule a scan on the next restart. However, it does not scan on the restart. I do not know if this is because it shuts down, before it completely signs on or what. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Answer:Corrupt or unreadable files on diskeeper!

From the information you provided, it is hard to determine where the error may be. Diskeeper will not defragment a drive if it is in a "dirty" condition and will give you an error if the drive is in this condition. (Since data integrity is a primary concern, Diskeeper will not perform a defragmentation on a "dirty" drive.)It appears that you may have hard drive problems and I would suggest you run the following command assuming your hard drive is drive c: chkdsk c: /fThis should fix and errors on your drive. If this doees not work and you can get run the operating system, you can shut down the Diskeeper service by going to Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services and stopping the Diskeeper service and setting the start mode to manual. This will shut down Diskeeper and allow you to fix the problems with your computer.

Hi,My laptop has become poorly again (it had a CD drive replacement a few months back, which incidentally is still temperamental, not sure if that info will impact on the problem below??)It is a Maxdata laptop running Windows Vista Home. It is due for a clean and defrag I know but I can't do this as it is currently not working at all!Whenever I try to open anything, i.e. Internet explorer, itunes, Windows Help and Support, I get one of two error messages in the bottom right, either "Werfault.exe - the file or directory C:\Users\ myname>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows is corrupt and unreadable, please run chkdsk utility. Or the same message with Iedw.exe at beginning instead.I couldn't get chkdsk to run first of all, but then managed it through command prompt, it ran on restarting and found nothing. On the advice of a friend I ran sfc/scannow and it said it had found some corrupt files but was unable to fix them and gave this C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log which I can't do anything with, whatever I do says access denied. (I am the only user/administrator).Can anyone help me? What/where might these corrupt files be and why? and what can I do?! (Is it anything to do with the fact that I haven't installed service pack yet that popped up in my windows updates yesterday?)Many thanks!

Answer:Corrupt and unreadable - chkdsk - won't work!

I had a BSoD pop up yesterday which said something about a 'bad proof header' possibly, I didn't read it fast enough. But everything restarted and was fine until now! Ta!

Can't log into windows. it keeps trying to do a system check on start and will just keep cycling through this. if i tell it not to run the check i get to the log on screen and it will let me type my password but it doesn't seem to respond to enter. on one log in attempt it told me that microsoft shared is corrupt or unreadable and to run the chkdsk utility - but i can't log in to do this. I have tried to start in safe mode but it gets so far as /windows/system32/DRIVERS/null.sys and then just seems to freeze. PLEASE HELP ME!!! Thanks

Answer:microsoft shared corrupt or unreadable??

Hopefully you either have the XP disk or an installed Recovery Console, from which you can do a chkdsk /r on the system drive. But first you need to back up data, because you could lose it in the process. If that doesn't do it you may be headed for a Repair Install. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

I have a customers computer that is running Vista home premium sp1. The programs that are already installed on it run fine. When you try to install a new program it gives an error that says "ShellExecuteEx failed; code 1392. the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." or just "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." You can download program files just fine but when you try to run them you get the error. The same occurs when you try to run things from a flash drive or CD. The files on the flash drive or CD are good because you can run them on another computer just fine.
The computer has Windows Defender and Ad Aware 2008 on it and I ran those to check for malware but they don't detect anything. I also tried running Trendmicro and Bitdefender online scans but got the same errors on those. Panda ActiveScan ran and didn't detect anything.
The computer has AVG 8.0 on it and doesn't detect any virus or spyware at all.
I've tried running the registry editor on Ccleaner but it doesn't find any errors.
I've tried running chkdsk several times but it doesn't detect any problems. I've also tried to do the repair computer option from the advanced startup menu but nothing changes.
I've tried to boot into Safe Mode but I still get the same results.
I've tried searching technet and other forums but with no luck.
Any ideas?

Answer:file or directory is corrupt and unreadable

Since you're able to use TechNet, I assume you are experienced. There could be a problem with how Windows is using the ShellExecuteEx command if you are able to access the files on another PC. Have you tried doing a system restore to when your PC worked normally? There is little information on the 1392 error code.

It is an external 2.5" hard disk with USB3 interface. Is there any way to rescue it?

The disc management shows RAW file system and 100% free space, which appears to mean it can be used after being reformatted. But I am not sure whether I want to use it again. Comment?

Answer:File or directory is corrupt or unreadable.

To rescue disk or contents ?
If you want to rescue disk only, you can try to reformat it and than check it's health with some of the programs from here: Download Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Tools Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks If it's not damaged, no bad sectors etc. than it should be safe to use.
To attempt to retrieve contents, you can try some programs from here; Download Data Recovery Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

Hi,

When I boot my computer, I am getting the error message "The file or directory C:\WINNT\Temp\AeXAM\AeX11.tmp is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility". Once I click OK, similar message appears with AeX11.tmp replaced with AeX12.tmp.

I am able to login to the computer but most of the times, the desktop items or the start menu doesn't appear and it just shows up the background. Sometimes, it allows me to see the desktop but with a few keystrokes or mouse movements to run the Chkdsk, my laptop hangs.

I am able to boot it in any other mode like Safe mode, Safe mode with command prompt, etc..,

I would appreciate any help that you could provide me in solving this issue.

Thanks,
Vijay

Answer:AeX11.tmp is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk

Sorry, I had meant to say : I am NOT able to boot in any other mode...
