I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: "UPS Support Ted Richards" <[email protected]> virii?

I have received a few that don't have the "Ted Richards" part. Variants have been around almost two years:

Like an idiot I installed some software to stream video onto my laptop and 30 seconds later i was flooded with warning bubbles coming from a blinking exclamation sign in the toolbar, "system failures", "critical errors", all kinds of pop-ups offering solutions. I've looked at a million other posts, and almost all recommend running SmitfraudFix at one point or another. However, I can't restart my computer in Safe Mode. when I try, i get all these lines in MS-DOS that say something about partitions and drivers. I've tried running Spybot, and AVG, but it still gives me all this junk. please help.

I keep getting pop-ups from Internet Explorer and at first Symantec's scan wasn't able to detect it (even after updating), and one time it did, but lately it hasn't again. AdAware seems to have been corrupted as well, so I'm unable to run it unless I'm in Safe Mode. When I run AdAware, it detects over 80 infected files, but it doesn't really clean it. At the same time, I keep getting a bunch of pop-ups on my system tray saying"Security Alert", which says that I have different virus names/trojans/worms on my computer. I also keep getting pop-ups for anti-virus software/porn. This has been going on for over a week and I've tried looking through other forums but haven't found any info that's been able to clean my computer. Please, please help me!

This is a problem I"ve had from 2007, the wireless card occasionally decides to disconnect.
Usually I can persuade it to function again, but it is something of a lottery, today, I have exhausted all avenues, rebooted the PC, and also the router to no avail, the sodding thing still proudly proclaims "Disconnected"!
Any one know how to force the bloody thing to earn its keep? :D

Hi,

I came home the other day and my family's home computer had a bunch of internet explorers open telling me I'm infected with all sorts of viruses. In the bottom right corner of the screen there is a blinking yellow triangle with a black exclamation sign in it that regularly pops up with a seemingly legitimate warning but I know its the virus. Also, on the desktop, there are two icon shortcuts to things called "Live Safety Center" and "Online Security Guide." Also I assume they're part of the virus. I've found on forums to post the HijackThis report and the SmitFraudFix report so I've posted them along with running Trend-Micro's HouseCall. Please Help!!!

Hi everyone,

I've been searching for a way to remove the "sent on behalf of" line on Hotmail. Whilst using hotmail to recieve and send from my domain site email address it always adds this extra part in which looks pretty unprofessional. But I've read that this is to avoid spamming problems etc.

Is there a way around this in hotmail? I've read that there is now a way around in Gmail with your domain STMP details.
So I'm not sure what people usually do in this situation? I use hotmail so I can get email alerts as they come through. It's just this "on behalf of" add on I need to get rid of.

Any ideas much appreciated thanks.

i just recieved an email allegedly from paypal stating that [email protected] has been added to my email. i was initially dubious of the email because i know i haven't touched paypal in months and because the mail came with an attachment.

not trusting the "report any scams" URL at the bottom of the mail, i googled paypal and THOUGHT athat i accessed my account outside of yahoo, but after i filed a report, i saw that the paypal URL started with https which looks suspicious too.

i tried asking jeeves who [email protected] is only to find a couple of blurbs regarding phishing under that message. then when i asked jeeves if https is a fake url, i found out about other sophisticates phishing techniques where a browser is hijacked and redirected.

i'm worried that even though i tried to find paypal via google, that this hijack STILL redirected me to the phishing site. it doesn't show up under hijack this.

did i do the right thing? am i safe? i'm worried that i was redirected to the phishing site where i gave my login info to a fake paypal address.

THIS is where i'm being directed when googling paypal:
https://www.paypal.com/

that looks wrong.

newbie here, just googled on because I have somehow received some annoying spyware that is driving me nuts. In the system tray a bubble pops up every 10 seconds or so with this message:

System Alert: [email protected]
Type: Spyware/Trojan
Vulnerable: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2003/Windows XP
Description: Spyware program that sends confidential information to a remote attacker
Protection: Click this baloon to download official security software

I also get pop-ups every now and then.

I have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 but it hasn't seemed to be able to kill it. Nor has my Norton Internet security. I have been reading some threads of others who describe similar problems, and at the end of each one there is instruction to start a new thread if you have the same problem.

So, I am starting a new thread. Any help in cleaning my system will be greatly appreciated.

Chris

For about the past two weeks certain sites which I have bookmarked for a long time and use regularly bring up an intercept. These sites are still good sites as friends say they can still access them. An example is "Ceebaileys.com", an airplane/motorcycle accessories site. The problem occurs no matter whether I try to access through bookmarks, Google or direct address. The intercept shows a page with the following "The Domain "Ceebaileys.com" is not available." It is an otherwise bare page with the heading "Search @ Hand" across the top. I have run Norton, both in normal and safe modes and I have run SpyBot and LavaSoft AdAware a number of times. The problem persists. Computer is also running slower and starting up slower. I ran Panda and it shows a plethora of spyware/adware issues. I did not spring for the pay version because I am skeptical. If AdAware and SpyBot found none and Panda finds 50, well, as I said I'm skeptical about committing the dollars. If I'm gonna spend money I want to get the best bang for the buck, both in safety and performance. Many thanks to any and all for assistance.HP Pavilion 2.6 chip 512 Megs ram Windows XP home.

Emailed to me from: [email protected]

"I am trying to find the code that will make the cellpointer in excel to go a certain direction from its place other than specifically naming the cell name. In the old DOS versions of Lotus there ws a command that was {down} or {down 4} to move down or move down three cells respectively. The same applied for {left} {right} and {up}. Do you know what it might be in Visual basic for applications.

I am not sure what you work on and I apoligize if this is not what you are supposed to work on. Please email me back and let me know one way or another. My email address is [email protected]"(sic)

Answer:VB-cell pointer "?" - [email protected]

Catherine:

Here's what I emailed to her. It's right from VBA help but it is kind of obscure.

Referring to Cells Relative to Other Cells

A common way to work with a cell relative to another cell is to use the Offset property. In the following example, the contents of the cell that's one row down and three columns over from the active cell on the active worksheet are formatted as double-underlined.

Sub Underline()
ActiveCell.Offset(1, 3).Font.Underline = xlDouble
End Sub

Note You can record macros that use the Offset property instead of absolute references. On the Tools menu, point to Record Macro, and then click Use Relative References.

To loop through a range of cells, use a variable with the Cells property in a loop. The following example fills the first 20 cells in the third column with values between 5 and 100, incremented by 5. The variable counter is used as the row index for the Cells property.

Sub CycleThrough()
Dim counter As Integer
For counter = 1 To 20
Worksheets("Sheet1").Cells(counter, 3).Value = counter * 5
Next counter
End Sub

Each time I open my MS Outlook I have 100-150 RETURNED emailed viruses in my inbox. Norton catches the virus and deletes it but after all I have done I am lost. Answer:VIRUS "[email protected]" HELP! “edited”

Fortunately, I think you are MISSING the virus. This Sobig variant spoofs other's addresses found in an address book. What that means to you is that someone with your e-mail address in their book is infected.

A couple of things. First, DO NOT open any attached files. If it appears that an e-mail with an attachment comes from someone you know, it would be prudent to scan it and/or check with them.

And second, all this nonsense is due to end in about a week or so, at least with respect to this Sobig.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Answer:I cant get rid of VIRUS "[email protected]" HELP!

If your system is scanning clean, I suspect the reason why you are receving those returned e-mails is because they are being sent out from someone else's infected computer with your e-mail address forged to it.

That is the nature of sobig.f

Antivirus vendors claim this variant will stop spreading after the 9th of this month, so presumably you should receive no more of those after that date.

Could some please explain the correct sequence or syntax of the http entries in the Internet Explorer’s browser address line to invoke the name and password entry box for a D-Link Camera, when accessing it remotely?

I have a dynamic host, which has an address that is entered in the browser's open box, in the following format:
http://servername.dynamichostnameortnumber. The port numbers are the ports assigned to the two cameras. The server name is the same server name that is assigned to the router and the DYNdns host. The dynamic host name is set up with DYNdns.org and has been tested using their tools and is reported as working.

I have tried the remote (internet) access on computers running both Windows XP home and professional, service pack 3.

The cameras are DCS-6620G 802g Wireless cams. Have configured cameras. If I am on my wireless intranet, I can access the cameras by either typing in their local IPs into the open box on the File Menu of Windows Internet Explorer or by using the IP Surveillance Software, no problem, so far. Each camera has an internal static IP, and each has been assigned its own HTTP port number which has been forwarded to the respective static IP in the Linksys WRT54G router.

Each Camera has an administrator name and password that has been saved. When accessing on my intranet, either through IE or the Surveillance Software, there is a drop down box that opens to input the name and password. This works fine on the intranet.

So I have my entire hard drive backed up to an image file. I had to format and put a new hard drive in my machine. All is fine and dandy, but when I try to access my user's folder in "documents and settings" on the mounted "image" all I get is "access is denied" - anyone know how to fix this, or get around it?

Hi there

I have this spyware virus and have been reading posts on this site and others for the past 8 hours now, trying to remove it myself using your suggestions, but it hasn't helped in the slightest. I notice most of the suggestions require the posting of log files, so I guess there are clues in there that alter what you recommend to remove the virus. I have a Dell Latitude with Windows XP.

My symptoms seem to be the similar to others I've seen:
1. Balloon saying "[email protected]" security alert
2. Balloon saying "Malware threats - black door trojan"
3. Balloon saying I have PSW.x-vir trojan
4. Balloon saying I have [email protected]
All these balloons say I should click on them to remove the virus, but I don't trust them. I feel like the virus is putting them there. Should I click on the balloon - will it help, or are they misleading me to click and cause further damage?
5. Hijacking of my internet home page - takes me to www.savetheinformation.com/blah blah
6. Security Warning: New variant of [email protected]
7. System Performance Monitor warning - System performance and internet connection slowed.
8. Random opening of websites
9. Addition of Security Toolbar 7.1 on my IE window.

I followed suggestions listed here and have done the following, TWICE:
1. Ran SmitFraudFix.cmd. Rapport.txt log file will be added to the end of this post
2. Ran Ccleaner
3. Ran the Ewido (now called AVG Anti-Spyware). Unfortunately, the... Read more

The details of my Log File are below.

Also, does this spyware look at anything else besides internet action? I have my own business and need to pay bills, do accounting, etc. I use Quickbooks on my computer, but don't want some virus getting a hold of my personal information. Do these viruses look at programs on the PC, or just internet activity? It's really hurting that I can't do my accounts....

Thanks so much!

This is a question posed to me by a friend that I did not have an answer to. He wants to know what an album he picked up that he thinks is copy protected (only evidence: no "Compact Disc" logo in the tray, one of those FBI Anti-Piracy Warning logos that's on the back of every record nowadays and that, when the CD is placed in the computer, an autorun comes up with an option to "Play Audio". No actual statement on the jewel case, tray booklet or compact disc that the CD is copy protected) will do to his computer or his media player of choice, even though he is not copying the record, just playing it with a later possibility that he might rip the record to his computer for his iPod. The album he's dealing with is not one of those rootkit-plagued CDs that Sony manufactured a couple years ago, but an album released in 2009 or 2010 by Universal Music.

This is a question i've kinda wondered about for a while, as well, but not enough to really ask. I've put in the same CD into my computer, but even though the autorun came up, it didn't seem playback-centric, didn't seem to install anything as far as I know and three tracks in I see no problems with playback in Winamp or problems with last.fm. But he seems to be worried about long term effects of just putting the CD in one's computer and playing it, I suppose?

In my opinion I think he read the Wikipedia page on Copy Protection and believes that the major labels are out to get ... Read more

A week ago I spilt a glass of red wine on my Dell 8600 notebook!! so i did what logic told me; put it up side down try clean it out and what not. in any case i saved the 60 gig hd (hitachi something or other)... and it seems to be working fine when i put it into a 2.5 hd case thingie. So from another laptop i can get into my old hard drive, where you can see program files, bitlord downloaded files, and all 50 gigs in use. The problem is My Documents...

I can go into my documents... and "see all the files", but the thumbnail images dont show up.. and when trying to transfer any of the documents in my documents, ex. jpegs... i get an error message " Cannot copy img_xxxx: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I don't seem to be using the file anywhere.. When i turn off the read-only in the entire folder and apply to all subfolders and files it just jumps back to read-only, and it won't burn on to a dvd. I also can't open the files obviously... what could be wrong? what can i do? PLEASE HELP! have most things backed up, but 6 months of pics and music down the drain?

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

Virus scan didn't find alerts of any kind

To make a long story short- below is the log file of HiJackThis. Please review it and reply if you see something to be concerned with for repairing my computer.

Answer:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Entering the bios limits me to certain options. Is there anyway to access the other options? sorry, newbie here.

Answer:No "usb legacy support" "qfan" options on my asus laptop bios.

If your BIOS doesn't include such options, then they simply are not there.

I don't know about hacking BIOS's, and I wouldn't suggest it at all. You could brick your motherboard.

However, you should check with your manufacturer's website and see if there is an update available for the BIOS that may increase available options.

Hi,

I just started getting into ripping, burning etc. Dbpoweramp seems to be a program many people like and recommend for various aspects, so I was reading that site. I came across the below by the author (I think he's the author... "Spoons"), on one of the format info pages at the site. I was wondering if it is outdated info? Protected WMA files couldn't be burned onto a CD, etc.?? That would sure influence my decision on which format to purchase in, as I'm sure it would everyone else's, so I can't imagine this is accurate currently. (Sorry, didn't want to register at yet another forum to ask this question, assumed someone here would know. ) Thanks!

Protection - this is an issue I feel strong about, so how exactly does protection effect WMA files? first off not all WMA files are protected, dMC will NOT convert a protected file, if it were to do so, it would be breaking the law. If I was to purchase a commercial track off the internet as a WMA file, then the chances are the file will be protected, this is to stop you from taking your WMA file and passing it to the person next door on a floppy disk, it simply will not play on any other machine other than your own. That is fair enough I believe Artists are entitled to payment for their work, however the part I find distasteful about protected WMA files, is I am not free to do anything with th... Read more

My Email client, MSN Premium (not Hotmail) will not open to write an email when clicking on any website's button labeled "send us an email". Instead this action causes several instances (up to 5) of IE6 to invoke and then the Op Sys (WinME) hangs until I use Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the erroneously opened IE tasks. I thought maybe it was that MSN mail was not my default email client so I used the proceedure to make MSN mail my default instead of OE6 but each time I returned to the options to see if it had changed it still says my default client is OE. Interestingly, if I envoke the MSN explorer and go to my MSN email inbox I can send and receive my email perfectly. This machine has been up and running since last October. I do not know if the problem has always existed or started more recently since I don't often click on "send us email" buttons.
I have three other machines similarly set up and none of them exhibit this problem.
WinMe, MSN Premium, and MSN messenger 6 all are up to date and current.
McAfee AV is on and up to date.
CounterSpy and Spybot are up to date and actively running.
Firefox 1.0.2 is my default browser

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

Please guys i need help...
My AOC E1621SWB monitor always say "Input not Support" after the Windows 7 logo... I tried running it in Safe mode and every other option i have but still it says the same thing...
Before I had that message I am installing Windows 7 64bit because what i had was just 34 bit (i just bought a kingston DDR3 4GB RAM and i have 2GB RAM also, i wanted to maximize my RAMs and everybody on the internet tells me to go 64... so that's why i did.)

I Installed the 64 bit with the Custom option because i like to build it from the ground up.. after some percent of Installation, of course my PC restarted and boom that's where the dreadful "Input not Support" message came... I tried Plugging in and out the VGA cable, the power plug and turning on and off the monitor but nothing works...
I don't know if it has any connection with the Win7 installation but as far as i can remember this was the first time it happened.

Some Facts you may also want to know:
1. there is nothing wrong with my VGA cable because i tried it with my laptop and it works.
2. i think there is also nothing wrong with the PC's VGA port because i can still see the logo etc at the startup.
3. I don't know if it helps but i have an AMD Athlon II Processor with NVIDIA GeForce 7025/ nForce 630a

HI,

Can anyone advise me about the following error report - from a software program please? (The pc is working fine btw):-

Windows reports that the "A2 Direct Disk Access Support Driver" device is not working properly.

The report advises to look in device manager and update the relevant driver - but device manager doesn't show any problems with any hardware.

Does anyone know what the A2 DDASD is, what it does and where to find it please?

And does anyone know what the report means and how better to check on it please?

Thank you.

Answer:Solved: "A2 Direct Disk Access Support Driver" not working

Ok so here's an update, (and the solution):

The driver in question is installed by an emsisoft anti-malware program (as part of the prog).

I had to go to device manager and click on 'show all' to see it, -that was the main problem.

Windows reprted that it wasn't working and wouldn't start (when I tried to update the driver).

So I found on the www that it was part of an emsidoft prog - which I had uninstalled ages ago.

So, in device manager click on the offending A2 DDASD (now I can see it) and select 'uninstall'.

Restart pc and all is well.

Best regards to all

Hi @ all !

Got a little problem with the Workstation service...
Here's what I know and what I've done :
For unknown reasons, the Workstation service doesn't start anymore (eventmgr.msc : "The Workstation service depends the following service: bowser. This service might not be installed.").
I don't have a restore point I can use (problem has been there for long, but didn't worry me before - now needing it).
The list of dependencies for Workstation isDEPENDENCIES : bowser

NSI is UP
MRxSmb10 and 20 seem to be working (responding normally to "sc qc").
However :

So here we are.
The bowser (and not browser !!) service/driver is missing (long name Browser Support Driver).

I've done :

I checked that %systemroot%\system32\DRIVERS\bowser.sys is present and used the Automated restore from that website :

With XP's Outlook Express-
When you'd delete email from their Folders, they weren't "completely deleted..." until you Compacted Databases & Reboot (without CD, OE would Not release from backup..., and Bloat...!).

Q1?- I now use WLM 2009 POP3/only (I like 2009's GUI, Much better than 2012), and wondered if I needed to regularly Compact Databases for "complete delete...", like I did with OE?

Q2?-If WLM's CD is the same as OE, how often should I schedule CD?

Answer:Does WLM "completely" delete email without "Compact Datadases"?

I also like and use WLM 2009. It depends how your mail accounts are set. My Gmail is archived when accessed by POP, My AOL mail is left on the server.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I'm using Outlook 2003 and have multiple email accounts. I just switched the default email account. However, when I send someone an email it says it is from the old default email address. I've looked at the properties of my new default account and no where in there does it mention this older email account. Outlook clearly is showing that the email is going out on my new default email account but the reply to email or the from portion is from another email account. Any suggestions?

I'm using Outlook 2000 & everytime I try to create a new message a pop-up box appears. The message reads as follows.

"A program is trying to access e-mail addresses that you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to allow this?

If this is unexpected, it may be a virus and you should choose "No".

I'm then given the option to allow access for 1, 2, 5, 10 minutes etc...

I'm hoping somebody can help.

Thanks,

If I check the box in either Outlook or Outlook Express to leave a copy of an email on the server and end up with 2 copies of every email, does that mean that the ISP does not allow copies to be left on the server? No copies are left on the server. There is nothing addressing that at the ISP website or the mail server site, one way or the other. My provider is Charter.

Answer:Solved: "leave an email copy on server" problem

Hi BearMom

The default setting for an e-mail client (program) is to remove messages from the server when you perform a Send/Receive.

If you want messages to be available to download to another computer (or another e-mail client on the same computer) then enabling the setting: Leave a copy of messages on the server, will tell the e-mail client to Not clear the messages from the mail server.
Both e-mail clients need to have the setting: Leave a copy of messages on the server enabled, for you to see the messages remaining on the mail server.
Otherwise, the e-mail client without that setting enabled, will clear the messages off the server.

Your ISP gives you a set limit on your mail storage. If that limit is reached, then your mail server will reject messages that are sent to you, until you make room by removing/deleting messages on the server. Messages on the mail server are just messages, they are not viewed as copies by the ISP.
I have the same setup with Outlook and Outlook Express with leaving a copy of messages on the server, enabled in both programs. Every few months, I disable that setting in one of my e-mail programs and download messages, which clears the messages off the server, so that the mail server does not fill-up. After downloading the messages, I enable the setting again.

Does that help?

Trouble seems to have started when I tried to reactivate my "HI5" Account. Had a lot of trouble With Emailed Links from them not working and freezing Outlook Express and then XP so that I had to crash out and reboot. Next I started getting Emails retrieved that came duplicated and were mails I had previously received and dealt with earlier. I did a complete computer scan with AVG and the following virus were found In C:/ drive root and duplicated in Windows32 folder.

rcvbm.exe - Packed.Monder.
umoikchf.exe - Trojan - H_Spambot.W
braviax.exe - Pack.Monder
cru629.dat - Small

These were successfully dealt with by AGV putting them in the virus vault and later I deleted them. Incidentally when I was trying to re activate my HI5 A/c I got an error message from the OS: "rcvbm.exe failed to launch"

When the AVG console opend at the start of the scan I got a red Alert that my Email scanner was deactivated I cannot find any way to activate it or even find any sign of it anywhere in the programs under AVG folder. I written a full report in case anyone else has these symptoms.
Hoping someone can help, Aleck

We have a gmail account. We receive lots of emails from a friend whose ISP was recently bought out. Using his former ISP, when he sent an email with an attachment, we'd click on " download", then get the pop-up to "open, save or cancel". We'd then click on "open" and there was the attachment. Now that he's changed over, emails with attachment don't give us the "open" option when we click "download" in the body of the message. He knows even less about "computering" than we do but, since we receive and open email attachments from other people, logic would tell us that something's not set up right on his end. He does say, however, that we and one other of his email friends are the only two that this is happening with; others are able to open his attachments. Does he need to confer with his ISP support people or do we need to make some sort of setting change in gmail? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I am hoping that someone can help me with what may be a complex question.

I have a spreadsheet, similar to the demonstration file I have attached. In it, there are a range of columns. One set of columns (A - D), shows a list of numbers that are references to items in a store, and it also shows their location in the store, so it acts as a floor-plan. The next column (E) lists those items again to show the dollar amount that those items have produced in total sales (F).

So, what I'd like to do is to add a conditional formatting to show me the "cold" and "hot" spots on the floor-plan so I can see where sales are most concentrated. I would assume that this would be done with a colour scale (using the range of values in column F to work itself out)?

Either way, the figures in column F would change weekly, so the relevant cells in columns A - D would need to automatically change when they're matching cells in column E - F change.

I hope this makes sense, as it's difficult to explain, but any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I recently built a call log database in Access 2007 for my team to use when calling agents on our top errors we see from a vendor's error report. My boss is requesting a report to see how many items have been resolved

I have a query started and I am trying to complete this task in a single query (if possible) instead of several queries (as I've done for a couple other things).

I have 3 tables I'm using: Assignment, AgtInfo and CallLog
Joins as follows: Assignment.st=AgtInfo.agcy_st
AgtInfo.agt_id=CallLog.agt_id

Fields in the results: Assignment.assigned_analyst, CallLog.rpt_mnth, CallLog.resolved

Resolved is a yes/no field. I've done a query that converts the -1 to a 1, so that the sum is a positive number for the "Yes" values. I'm not sure how to enter the expression to subract the "Yes" values from the total number of values (yes/no) to get to my "No" count.

Essentially, I'd like the results to display as:

assigned_analyst, rpt_mnth, CountYes_resolved, CountNo_resolved

Somehow the connection is just not clicking in my brain with everything I've read though searches. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

IBM T-40 laptop (about three and a half years old)

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

whenever i clicked on a large video file in explorer (running xp sp2 on inspiron 6000), explorer would crash. i found a tip online to run "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and that fixed the problem completely.

however, this fix created a new problem - - now all the info that used to be under "artist" or "album" is gone! any fix? "date modified" is still there, but i like to sort my mp3 folders by artist, and now it does me no good.

by the way, when i now click on an mp3's properties, summary tab, and go to advanced, all the artist/album info is missing from there too.

from doing a search, i see that the way to undo the original fix is to run "regsvr32 shmedia.dll", but then i think i will have errors with large avi's.

so, any other fix?

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!
~Joe

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

System: Acer Aspire one netbook.
Win XP home ed. SP3

Synopsis of issue:
Got this comp. from my company for a new line of work I started. Was "deep frozen" when I got it and was useless to me in that state. Got it thawed and it suddenly wanted to do loads of updates, so I let it. Apparently I was not careful enough & got the "XP antivirus 2012" malware.

Eventually conquered that beast and installed avira free. almost immediately avira picked up on the "html/infected win.gen2" malware. I quarantined, deleted, scanned comp. w. avira, rkill, & malwarebytes. all scans came up clean but I now have no connectivity. wired conn. continually tries to acquire network address and w.less has limited or no....

Not my router or modem as I have 2 home comps actively cnctd as I type this. Also tried multiple other networks w. same neg. results.

After loads of searching and t/s'ing I believe I have found the root of the problem: When I look under "services" I found that "netbios helper", "Network Location Awareness" & "dhcp client" are all not started.

Trying to start them results in failure b/c some "dependencies are marked for deletion". the afore-mentioned 3 things are dependent upon the Netbios over tcpip and tcpip protocol driver.

Those drivers are in the system32/drivers folder but I cannot find a "non plug and play" section in the device manager. Yes, I looked under ... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] No Connectivity after "infected win.gen2" and "XP antivirus 2012" issues

Hello Gunnersfan13,

I do see the problem and I'll have to ask you to please stop any more action on your part to resolve this yourself or you'll make my job that much more difficult. :)

You are still very much infected with ZAccess. I need to see the dds.txt. (You posted, and attached, only the Attach.txt produced by dds.scr)

Run dds.scr again, and post the contents of the dds.txt.

==============================

Next, open Notepad and copy/paste the contents inside the quote box below, into Notepad.

Quote:

regedit /a afdexport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\currentcontrolset\Services\AFD"
notepad afdexport.txt

Save this as afdexport.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"

Double click on the .bat file & allow it to run. Then post the log which it produces

===============================

Also, download SystemLook from one of the links below and transfer it to your desktop.

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

Code:
:filefind
afd.sys

Click the Look button to start the scan.
When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

Aaron

First off, thank you for any assistance in advance.

Problem: "System Alert" balloon in tray icon that will not go away and redirects me in IE 7 to hxxp://www.virprotect.com/?aff=1012.

Using SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE, I seem to have gotten rid of the problem of the redirection of my home page as well as removed the trojan that caused all of this in the first place (I think). The pesky balloon, however, remains. All pre-steps your forum recommeded have been completed. Below are the logs your forum requests in advance (please note that my DSS "extra" log file is attached):

Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Hi and THANKS for being there! This is primarily a term definition question. I don't find any clear answer in my user's guide.

I've got this terrific TV card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich.

I've got this terrific add-on AGP card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich. But I'm thinking that's beside the point. (It's a nVidia Geforce FX 5200)

This TV Tuner/Capture card dates back a ways; bought it for my old Windows Millennium machine and I remember that it worked just GREAT. It has the brand name "Brooktree" but that might just be the chipset or something. Anyway, I abandoned the TV add-on when I upgraded to a newer Windows XP machine in early 2007. I couldn't find the right driver though it worked pretty fairly with the old driver for most TV stations, it didn't work perfectly. I ditched it at the time.

I recently visited driverguide.com and searched diligently and finally did find a perfect driver for that TV card for XP. I am sure it is the latest and best driver available, so that is not even an issue.

Since I no longer subscribe to cable, I can use this old card to watch only channel 3, as output by my VCR. (The card also has FM radio, which works great!)

Here's the thing. A very itty-bitty teensy slight snag. When I initiate the TV Tuner, it always starts up in what they call "Preview mode". There is sound but no picture! No problem, I just tell it to go into the alternate mode, "... Read more

Which is the better card, the "Sapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis Pro 128MB" or the "PNY GeForce 6600GT 128MB"? I'm talking about the AGP versions. The 6600GT is about £10 more here in the UK. I had a faulty Radeon 9600XT so I'm looking for a new card. I will spend around £150 ($260). These 2 cards have caught my eye and I don't know which to choose. What would you get?

Thanks

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Ok, this is my third attempt, after re-booting and re-booting. This is my wife's Sony, abt. 3 years old, P4, WinXP HE, 512k ram. For a long time now it has been "temperamental". Among the latest is I can no longer "switch user" as normally. Clicking Start/log off/switch user does absolutely nothing now, it merely reverts to the former screen. Start/log off/log off does work, however.
And the shortcut that I used to use, the Win logo key +L now goes to "UNLOCK COMPUTER", a pop-up message that tells me the pc is in use and locked and only I (presumably as an administrator) with the proper password can now unlock it..
Problem: what the heck is the password?
We don't recall ever setting one.
Control+Alt+Delete does nothing here. Once at this screen, my only recourse is to reboot. ("Cancel" is greyed out. I think though that a few days ago it wasn't and I could cancel. Is that my faulty memory or is this thing getting worse?)

A side note: I did recently download and utilize a reg cleaner freeware "Regseeker" which I used to delete only several items it said were not used or broken links. (It also allegedly created a back-up before deletion, but darned if I can see where or how I can get them back!)
I also disabled, thanks to another tech "advice", several services via Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. However, that techie claims nothing I disabled in his list should affect this.

Thanks!

I have looked around for help on this issue and havn't been able to find a resolution that works. I think because I havn't been able to find any imformation on my specific issue.

I am one of the most computer literate people I know, so when a co-worker mentioned to me that he was having problems with his computer, I agreed to look at it. His problem was simple, he had a lot of viruses. I have cleared most (however I assume not all) viruses and instinces of spyware. The computer worked fine for a little while while I did some final checks on his computer, then the problems started.
He has a Dell Inspiron 710m Laptop, running Windows XP Pro. (Service tag 8sk8091)
As far as I can tell, he has not added or upgraded it in any way. He only has some basic programs.

I know that the issues might have something to do with his wireless.
He is running the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG.
The computer is getting stop errors (BSOD)

The first one was called DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0x000000D1 amd listed the file w29n51.sys (which upon further study, turned out to be a file related to his wireless.)

I have already updated the drivers and reinstalled the program with the latest versions on the Intel website.

I also noticed (though with not frequent) the stop error with the same name and stop code, but which listed the NDIS.sys file (which upon further study turned out to be a system utility).
and now, I have gotten a stop error of 0x0000000A, (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQU... Read more
