Question: Excel 2010 side bars

My HP pavilion have window 7, Excel; 2010 opens up with side bars too dark. It is difficult to see scowling bar clearly. Any suggestions please?

Working on a client's computer running Win 7 Home Premium and Office 2010. When opening Excel it crashes stating there is an "side by side" error, event ID 59.
 
here's the dialog box: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL,EXE The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail"
 
Following is from the event log:
 
Activation content generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE.Manifest" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax.
 
Also PowerPoint opens OK but when trying to open a file it says that there is a problem with the content of the file. Attempts to repair don't work. The file opens on other systems so it is not the file.
 
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the C++ packages with no help. Any help would be appreciated.

Suddenly out of the blue nothing opens - Am not a programmer and don't understand all this lingo have 4 0r 5 redistributible programs C++ 2005, 2008 etc with all relevant service packs - NO LUCK - this is killing me am looking for work and can't get to my resume can't open any programs at all - adobe, microsoft office NOTHING please tell me how to restore my system files to default and start over

Good Morning,
I have three identical machines all running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2. All three have Office Home and Student 2010 installed. On one machine I have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling Office because I get the side by side configuration error on a random and recurring basis. Is there a permanent fix for this? I have the free upgrade for Windows 7 Home Premium for all three machines but have not used them because I am generally happy with Vista. Would upgrading to Win7 possibly help?

Question: side bars & prizes

Hi, I am having trouble with side bars loading & notices that i have won some sort of a prize.
this causes the computer slow to load an application as these two seem to have to load first.
then after a while i get a message that comes up internet explorer has stopped working.
i have stopped POP UPS by clicking on internet options & stopping Popups. but this has not had any effects.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Okay, this problem has been irritating me for quite some time now. My issue is this: I open a game called Ultima Online and click full screen with the highest resolution available. My result: a blown up play screen with two bars on each side of my screen about two inches thick cutting off my gameplay. I had this exact same issue with Call of Duty: Black Ops, and changing the resolution to 1080p quickly solved this. I also have a flickering problem with Ultima Online when I enter full screen, which many people have had issues with and few found solutions. A big thing with them is that they use Razor and that causes the flickering, but I do not use Razor... My question is, does anyone know how to fix this or have any suggestions I can try? My operating system is windows 7 64 bit, laptop toshiba qosmio x505-Q880, i7 processor, 18.4 inch HD display with a Nvidia GTS 360M graphics card, so my GPU is not the issue here. My uncle plays Ultima Online as well with the same operating system on a desktop with a 22 inch widescreen 1080p monitor and has no issues at all. the game looks great and works fine. He does use an AMD graphics card, so if there are any Nvidia Control Panel options I could change that would be an easy fix.

Things I have tried:
Reinstalling the game with a fresh download of the client
updating graphics driver (it's up to date)
playing with some of the graphics options in the Nvidia Control Panel, but alot of them I don't know what the do

I am running Compaq Presario CQ61 using AMD M880G with ati Mobility Radeon HD 4200.

I am trying to run certain games on full screen and I get these two black bars on the side of the screens. One emulator I used was "Project 64" and I set some options to make it exactly full screen and it worked.

But as for most PC games like Sims won't really work. Is there something wrong with my graphics card?

Whenever I watch video , wether its through video players such as wmp winamp vlc or through web browsers , ie youtube ect I get black bars eitherside of the video even when I veiw on full screen.I have an xfx nvideo 7800 GTX using Vista home premium with the latest drivers.Any suggestions on how I can view video without the black bars either side ?

Having searched Google for a week now, I've yet to find a satisfactory solution to this, what appears to be a common problem. I have the Satellite L500-11V, with Windows 7 installed, all latest drivers from Toshiba website, and the BIOS update to 2.10. The notebook has been working fine, and then all of a sudden this week the display appears to have shifted over to the left and down. I now have a black band across the top and right side of the screen!

Also I've noticed the maximum resolution is 1280 x 800, I've had to set it to 1280 x 720 so I can see the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

Have Toshiba or Intel (as I have the Intel Mobile 4500 Chipset) ever solved this problem...

Would appreciate some answers to this annoying problem.

Native resolution for this 15,6? display is 1366 x 768.
Can you choose this resolution in display settings?

It is not easy to understand what is wrong there but as first step try please to install Intel display driver again.

Can somebody PLEASE tell me how the hell to get rid of them? I've already tried stretching the screen horizontally but the desktop icons go inside the black bars and the black bars still stay there
 

Answer:Those black bars on left and right side of your screen!

By using the monitor adjustments. If it's a 14 or 15" older monitor you are probably stuck with it.

Like I mentioned before in my last post I acquired another Tower, but Im using an old RELISYS 16' monitor with this system, ok anyway, I was wondering why I have black bars on both sides of the monitor the picture is not filling the whole screen I have looked behind the monitor for an adjustment and in front of it also, and cannot find an adjustment for it, and i have removed the monitor from the device manager and rebooted and let windows install the best one, do I need to search from Drivers for this?, the Resolution is set at 640x480 and I'm not sure what the Refresh rate is set at, could this be a problem also.thanks for the help.

Hi, I switched on my laptop after 2 days and I found a black bar on the right side of my screen and another black bar on the bottom of the screen. The bar on the bottom is even strange. Its kinda blurred and the windows icon is also blurred near bottom. When I placed my mouse pointer in that bar its just gets elongated in the entire bar. I had this problem once earlier but then I just restored my system and it was OK. Now even system restore did not work. Please help (Kindly give an elaborate answer)Thanks

In build 14271 rs-1 scroll bars have been added so the icons can be shifted left or right. I have icons that I want to be visible at all time so I select that no icons be hidden. Even with this selection to see all icons, I still get the scroll bars and I do not like that at all. How can I get rid of them? There seems to be no way.

I received a .pps file of old planes. I wanted to extract a picture file and use it as my wallpaper. My problem is that the slides of the old planes are all centered with Black bars on both sides. When I copy or extract that particular picture file to convert to a .jpg file, it has the side bars on it. When I set it for my wallpaper, it has the Black side bars. I've tried my Nero Essential program to modify the picture, but I can't find anything that works. So, my question is, How to I get rid of the side Black side bars to make a full screen picture that can be used as wallpaper for my monitor? ive had my comp for about 2 years now (with the same monitor) and recently i noticed my screen.. shrink.. lol... i just went to my monitors settings and streched it out.. no problem.. maybe 2 days later.. it shrank again.. this time leaving 2 black bars on the left and right side of my screen as what its receiving (i can make it so i can shrink what windows is displaying and i can still see to lighter black bars to the left and right side then what is completely black from what the monitor is blanking out) so i figure its a video card problem (radeon 9200 pci), my windows xp is messing up, or my monitors messed up.. help

G'day everyone - I suspect this issue will be a tough one to get help with!

I've attached a screen-capture of a Microsoft Office Excel 2007 spreadsheet I'm working on at the moment. As you will be able to see on the screen-capture, I've marked the areas of interest and will explain here...

When I enter a name in this column (marked as '1'), I want the spreadsheet to check another column (marked as '2') to see if there is a match. If there is a match, I then want the spreadsheet to check the column marked as '3', and subtract that amount from the column marked as '4'. If there is no match between the column marked as '1' and the column marked as '2', I don't want anything to happen.

I hope that made sense, and if anyone can help me with a solution here, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello and thank you in advance for your help, I am in desperate need!

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure when this problem started as I haven't been on much the last week or so, but I've tried all the trouble shooting I could find but still cannot manage to fix this problem.

When I try to open Word or Excel I get an error message:
"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

Not totally sure what that means, but I have ran an administrative command prompt of sfc/scannow, and all my bad files are fixed (at least that's what it tells me when I try to run it again)

I also read tips where it tells you to go to the Event Viewer to get more details on the side-by-side problem. Well this seems to be having a problem, too. I get an error message saying:
"MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly.
Name: Event Viewer
CLSID: FX:{b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-714cbb7cb510}"

I did just get rid of the Scour redirect virus, and I'm 99% sure this was happening while I had that; not sure if it's related, but when I scan (and am doing another just to check) I come up clean.

Well...have you tried uninstalling the MS Office suite...and then reinstalling?

It could have become damaged. Uninstalling/reinstalling, then updating it would take care of that possibiliity.

Hi everyone.

More and more these days we see a vertical bar at the left side of web pages with social media links. I believe they are called CSS Social Media Sidebars. They usually cover up what your trying to read. They really annoy me and I was wondering if there is a way to automatically stop them loading with webpages.

I know that you can use Ad Block Plus to remove some but that doesn't always work and it's not automatic.

Any ideas?

The above screenshot is from Flash player in Chrome in Windows 10, the screenshot below is from Windows 7 but no black bars on the side. So when you enlarge it the black bars stay on in Windows 10. Anyone come across this as it's wrecking my head.

Try Lorien's advice, then mine, for the first two answers. If that does not solve the issue, keep going with my advice, and post an SFC log (sfcdetails.txt), and the sxstrace.txt.

Also, could you give us just a few more details. I assume that the error message is "The side for side configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the issue" Can you please confirm that, and that it occurs for Microsoft Office only, as far as you are aware.

I've found a number of suggestions on how to create a scroll bar in a PPT slide but the only suggestion that seems to work doesn't. The one that "seems" to work is to add the Developer ribbon to PPT which I did. I followed that, and actually was able to create the scroll bar, but when I went to slide show, it didn't work.

I have been getting the following errors in Excel 2010 for about 3 months and they are getting more frequent (I have Win 7 Pro):

(1) Errors were detected while saving 'C:\Users\username\Documents\filename.xlsx'.
Microsoft Excel may be able to save the file by removing or repairing some
features. To make the repairs in a new file, click Continue. To cancel saving the
file, click Cancel.
(2) Cannot open the Clipboard.
(3) An unexpected error has occurred. AutoRecover has been disabled for this session of Excel.
(4) Excel has stopped working.
(5) Freezes on print preview.

I have done the following:
- Tried Excel in safe mode.
- Uninstalled and Reinstalled Office 2010.
- Disabled all add-ins.
- Done an exhaustive search on the internet only to find that other people have one or more of these errors, but no solutions.
- Other Office 2010 apps work ok.

Nothing has worked. Iím barely able to get anything done! Please help, Iím dying here!

My operating system is WINDOWS HOME PREMIUM, I am using APACHE OPEN OFFICE 3.4.
The probmlem that I have is that the SYMBOLS and TEXT on the TITLE BAR, the MENU BAR and the TOOL BAR are so small that I find it a bit difficult to read them easily. In Windows XP I know how to enlarge them but I find that that method does not work. Can any one help me Please???. Weejohn.

Hi friends!

Is there any way to decrease the gap between bars (NOT the width of the bars) of excel bar chart?
I made a bar chart with 23 dates (weeks like 10/5/2007, 10/12/2007, 10/19/2007 etc.). The row were very thin and the gap between the rows is long. Can we decrease the gap between the bars to make it look good?

Hello everyone,Normally Excel gives the variety of charts (apple pie, bars, radar etc.) but in the chart all the series are displayed in the preselected mode.I'd like to know if it is possible to have mixed types of charts in one and namely:if I have e.g. two series, one of them is to show the real monthly results in the period from January to June and it should be shown by bars whereas the second series is to show the target objectives, which should be shown by a red line.Is it possible to do this in Excel?Thanks a lot for your suggestions!Zennon

Hi

When I view an Excel worksheet, both my horizontal and vertical toolbars do not appear.

I have tried:

Office button (Top Left)>Excel Options>Advanced>Display Options for this workbook, and both horizontal & vertical scrollbars are already checked.

Yet I still can't see the scrollbars in my document on the 'Normal' view. They appear when I go to 'full screen mode' under 'View', but then I can't see any of my toolbars, which is no good.

Any suggestions how to make the scrollbars re-appear under 'Normal' view?

i am using excel 2007, when i open excel there are no menu or tool bars along the top of the screen, but when i minimize it and then maximize, the full menu's tool bars reappear, i have obviously altered something in the excel options setup, but what? how can i get it to open normally

Answer:Solved: excel menu/tool bars

Excel is opening in 'Full Screen' mode, if you press the 'Esc' key on your keyboard this will bring the toolbars back.

'Full Screen' mode can be found on the 'View' tab within 'Workbook Views'.

Unfortunately I haven't found what would cause Excel to always open in this mode...

Hi, i have created a dropdown menu with the months of the year in. I also want to make a drop down bar for the years upto the year 2099 possibly. I want to be able to select a month then a year then press the macro button which would then go to another page that is the month and year that i have selected.

e.g. I select June then 2004 i then press the button and this would then go to a page created for June 2004. i know this would create alot of pages but i just want to know the basic persedure

Assuming that the Year is in cell A2 and the Month is in cell B2, and you have a sheet with the tab name 2004June (notice, no spaces), then try this:

Sheets(Range("A2").Value & Range("B2").Value).Activate

Modify for actual cell ranges.

If the naming syntax of your sheet tabs is 2004 June (with a space in between the year and month), then use:

Sheets(Range("A2").Value & " " & Range("B2").Value).Activate

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and just upgraded IE from 9 to 11. Afterwards, I observed that Outlook 2010 was not downloading pictures (instead showing red x's) and Excel 2010 embedded internet queries stopped working. 
I think I've cornered the problem, but can't seem to fix. I have also observed that IE's temporary internet files (TIF) folder may be missing (Internet Options>Browsing History>Settings>Temporary Internet Files shows nothing under Current Location)
and the allotted disk space is set to zero and cannot be changed. If I input another number (no matter the number), I receive the following error message:
"Please select a value between 8 and 8 for how much disk space Temporary Internet Files may use."
I have tried renaming the following RegEdit keys, but to no avail: Cache and LowCache (both under HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Internet Settings>5.0). They get replaced when IE11 is re-opened.
The actual values within the registry keys are as follows:
Cache>Content>CacheLimit = 8192 (Decimal)
LowCache>Content>CacheLimit = 256000 (Decimal)
This is driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and just upgraded IE from 9 to 11. Afterwards, I observed that Outlook 2010 was not downloading pictures (instead showing red x's) and Excel 2010 embedded internet queries stopped working. 
I think I've cornered the problem, but can't seem to fix. I have also observed that IE's temporary internet files (TIF) folder may be missing (Internet Options>Browsing History>Settings>Temporary Internet Files shows nothing under Current Location)
and the allotted disk space is set to zero and cannot be changed. If I input another number (no matter the number), I receive the following error message:
"Please select a value between 8 and 8 for how much disk space Temporary Internet Files may use."
I have tried renaming the following RegEdit keys, but to no avail: Cache and LowCache (both under HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Internet Settings>5.0). They get replaced when IE11 is re-opened.
The actual values within the registry keys are as follows:
Cache>Content>CacheLimit = 8192 (Decimal)
LowCache>Content>CacheLimit = 256000 (Decimal)
This is driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there. In Excel, I have 5 series of data, I want to chart them as 4 bars and the fith series showing as a line, can it be done? I am using the "Line Column" chart type but it is making the last 2 series into lines. I would like 4 bars (to show phone calls) and 1 line (to show texts) running over the top. Can this be done? Thanks so much.

Every day I send out excel documents that I then convert to pdf's. I use the same excel template on each document. The only thing that changes in each document per recipient is the "name" "company" & "email" fields in the excel document.

Question: Is there a way I can get these documents to interface with outlook so that when I select more than one person to receive the document (as many as 30 people will receive the same document), and auto populate the contact info "name" "company" "email."

This way would save me a few steps so that I don't have to pick a contact... type all their info in the fields... send. Select my next contact... enter appropriate info in the fields... and repeat and repeat.

I'm emailing job specific information to everyone working on the same job. I'm sending it to multiple people, but need it to look like they were the only one who received the document. Just like when you get an email about the "deal of the week" that says, "Dear Mr. Johnson, How's your summer going?.... " while someone in NYC gets the same letter that says "Dear Mr. Thompson, How's your summer going.... " from the same sender. Of course the deal of the week changes each week.

How can I make this happen? If there is a better way outside using excel to create pdfs, or a totally different method entirely. I'm all ears. I just need to send the informatio... Read more

Help! I am trying to copy and paste a chart from Excel into a Word doc. It doesn't matter what Paste-Special option I choose, it pastes a box for the chart but only the bottom quarter inch of the chart appears in the box. The rest of the box is blank. If I click on the box and drag it, I can see a ghosted image of the contents of the chart but I can't get it to really appear. It also only prints the bottom quarter inch of the chart. I've tried and tried and tried, every option I can think of.

I have an important program that uses a DLL that only works with Excel 2010 32 bit. I'm running Excel 2010 64 bit now -- how do I install the 32 bit version? I have the CD which has both versions on it. But when I run Setup, it gives me options that I don't understand for this limited purpose. In other words, I want to keep all my other Office applications (Outlook, Word, etc running as 64 bit versions but in the future run Excel in only the 32 bit version.

I'll appreciate your help with this very much!

What exactly are the options shown when you run setup? Do you have an option for completely uninstalling Excel?

As I recall, MS recommends the 32 bit install and I think it is the default. Did you have some specific reason to choose 64-bit?

I am running Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 on Windows 7.

When I open Excel my personal.xlsb opens fine and my macros are available and I can create new macros. No problems.

BUT when I open any existing Excel file the pesronal.xlsb is not opened and therefore no macros and I cannot create new macros as I get the error "Personal Macro Workbook in the startup folder must stay open for recording." I have been trying things all night with no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will list the things I have tried or checked with no success below:
In Options>Advanced Tab>General Section....the box for "Ignore other applications that use DDE" is NOT checked.
In Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Trusted Locations... I have C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART listed which is where my personal.xlsb is located
In Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Macro Settings ...Disable all macros with notification...selected and not selected neither way solves the issue.
In Options>Add-Ins>Manage: Disabled Items ...There are no disabled items.
I have deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel in the registry editor
I have deleted C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLSB and then run excel to create a new personal file.
I have renamed C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLSB to PERSONAL.XLSA

I've searched for issues regarding non-working VBA code written for Excel 2010 and compatibility wit Excel 2011 for MAC.
I am currently using Addin (*.xlam) files that hold all the necessary code to process multiple files without needing to use the PERSONAL.XLSB and as eliminating the need to copy VBA code to every file that requires.
This works perfectly with all the Windows Office versions.
Today a colleague want's to run this same file on a MAC book with Office 2011.
The moment he opens the Addin het gets an error that a library cannot be found, understandable, but the Tools Reference in the VBA project is also greyed out so I cannot even try setting any reference.
Does anyone have any experience with this or is this something that needs a complete new approach when it regards Office on the MAC?

I hope somebody can help

We recently migrated from Office 2003 to Office 2010.

Just to give some background, (and I dont' know if this is relevant to this error), the Office 2003 excel did not accurately show the correct file paths where files were linked. It would show something in the C drive.

The issue I am concerned about today is this: when some users close files in 2010 (files were created in they sometimes get the error below:

'"The name ABE2, either conflicts with a valid range reference or is invalid for Excel. This name has been replaced with _ABE2"

Can someone assist me with this? I need to stop it from appearing and I am not sure how.

Hey Folks,

Been banging my head against this for a few days now, and can't figure out what the issue is, so hoping someone here can help me.

A quick background- building an application that has a SQL backend (2008 R2) to store transactional data, a MS Access 2010 DB that has linked tables to the SQL DB that has some other tables with some forms built as a sort of 'administrative console', and an Excel 2010 (.xslm) workbook that is accessed by end users. Based on some user input in the Excel workbook, a dynamic query is built with VBA, then passed to the Access DB.

The application works fine when users with Excel 2010 use it, however users with Excel 2007 seem to be having issues.

When they try to run the portion of the application that calls to the DB, the following error is kicked:

" Run-time error '3146' ODBC -- call failed. "

Upon stepping through the DB engine errors collection, this is the error being tripped:

" ODBC -- call failed. [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string. (#241) "

Problem in Excel 2010 [but revives a Closed TSG thread for Excel 2007]

The "Personal Macro Workbook" is a file called Personal.XLSB
The Personal.XLSB file is in the correct location /XLSTART/
The file properties option "Opens with Excel" is selected.
The file contains a (freshly re-made) macro.
(It also contained the same steps macro before it was deleted
and re-recorded during troubleshooting for this problem.)

When Excel is opened, the Personal.XLSB DOES NOT OPEN WITH it.

Because the Personal Macro Workbook does not open,
- existing macros do not function,
- nor can new macros be recorded

Same not-opening result, whether opened by clicking on
- Excel, in the Programs list or
- a desktop shortcut to a specific Excel file

However, the Personal.XLSB file can be opened and the macro made functional
by manually opening that file where it is stored in /XLSTART/

An unexplained workaround was identified in the closed thread.

*rename the Personal.XLSB to Personal.XLSA

I find this workaround effective.
The Personal.XLSA file opens with Excel and the macros are available.
But the file seems to be grayed out when viewed with Explorer in /XLSTART/

However, I do not like using workarounds, as they can cause trouble later.
I find that the "open with" setting was changed when the extension was changed
The setting is now "Opens with: Windows Shell Common"

I would appreciate an explanation how to make Personal.XLSB open as it should.

Whenever trying to save an excel 2010 spreadsheet, getting an error, "Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action." I ticked the box in the advanced options to ignore other applications that use DDE, but then I started getting a new error, "There is a problem sending the command to the program" and my file won't open.

I'm stuck in a loop and google is failing me.

Hi guys,

Since a day or two I?m having the following issue when I close an excel file (extension xlam).

I write my own addin files and have been using them for many, many years.

I?ve read that this seems to be a bug with Excel 2010 but the strange thing is why now and not before?

The addin is not installed, I run it when I need it, it contains the necessary xlm code with custom ribbons and all the necessary buttons, you name it, it just works as it should.

I have one button that either close the addin or quits Excel altogether

The VBA project?s properties are set to non-visible and password protected.

Now I get the dialog prompt to enter the VBE password. If I enter the password or press cancel, all I get is that Excel has encountered a problem and will shutdown.

OS: Windows 10 64-bit, Office 2010 and everything has been running fine with Windows 01 and before that with Windows 7

VBA Editor window is not maximized (as I read on several posts), and when I remove the password and save it and then reopen the vbe editor does not show up anymore when closing.

If I run the same macro directly, not using the menu button, the same thing happens. It seems like it?s trying to access the VBA properties, but I have not added any code to do that.

Very strange and especially I do not like thing I do not understand, no changes made and I do not address the VBE components in any way.

Any ideas?

Most of my Excel files open fine with a doubleclick from Windows Explorer. I have two XLSX files however, that "try" to open when I single click. They open to a blank, grey screen - essentially they open Excel, but the file does not open. (I do see a quick flash of tabs at the bottom indicating the file is starting to open or opens and then terminates immediately).

The problem is clearly not a "tiled window" or "window offscreen" problem - there is no file open. All the Excel functions are greyed out. If I go to File-->Options, i just get a blank grey screen. If I go to file --> open, I can then open any file.

It seems that these two files have some kind of trigger property that starts Excel with one-click, but I can't find how to change that property. None of my other XLSX files act this way.

UPDATE: Further experimentation reveals that this problem is somehow linked to password protection. I copied all the tabs to a new sheet and saved as XLSX. This sheet works normally, i.e. I can click on it once to highlight it and it does not open Excel. I double click and it opens. But once I password protect it, the behaviour changes to that described above.

Why not? You can save it with the exact-same filename, even with the Save As command. It's only from here you can choose the Tools drop-down, General Options, and then change the password from there.

I am trying to pull a dashboard view from a "Tracker". Given below is the formula that I used:

This perfectly works fine in my laptop that has excel 2013 but when I email this to my team who have Excel 2010, they only see zeros. We have checked all options like enabling Automatic Calulcation of Formula, removing all named ranges in the sheet etc., but it is just not working.

Can you please help ? This is a bit urgent and I need to present this for a meeting tomorrow.

As part of updatting our computer equipment I was reassigned from a Dualcore Windows XP Sp2 with Office 2007 to a new Quadcore Windows XP Sp3 with Office 2010. Both with IE8.

The problem at hand is this particular Macro that is run monthly and creates 167 web querys, one at a time. This is why I made a macro. The webpage that I get my imformation from is http://www.systematics-int.co.uk/, which has a login page.

What I used to do in Excel was to first manually create a web query in such page in order to enter my login credentials, confirm that I entered the page, close the query wizard, and then proceed to run my macro. It worked, and still works, flawlessly in my previous PC but not so much in my new one, as all I get from the macro are a bunch of worksheets saying that I'm not logged in so I can't retrieve any information.

I hope I've been explicit enough as how it doesn't work. I really need this to work because my old PC is going to be formatted and my only option would be to do this manually.

If you need more info please ask, I don't think I've been clear enough as English is my second language.

Could ik be that the symantec site has attached your login to a specic Ip address or machine name which now is changed because of your new system?
I don't really think it;s Office 2010.
Your system is new, another mac address, probably a new IP address, new computername.

All these seeminly irrelevant factors may be the reason it's now working, have you tried executing your macro step by step? Trubleshooting takes a lot of patience and time.

I hope this gives you some ideas to look at

I am unable to open a password protected Excel 2010 file in Excel 2007.

When attempting to open this file nothing happens but on clicking the office button the New and Open options are available but all the other options are greyed out.

Question: Excel Side bar

I have a slight problem with using excel. Although i only have about 450 line of date in the spreadsheet, the slider bar along the right hand side of the chart has a very, very small slider. This is difficult to get hould of to 'mouse' up and down. how can i make the slider bar larger?

It's taken me two days to figure out how to post to a forum that may or may not be the proper place for my question. I apologize for my frustration.

I have what should be a simple problem with all of my installed HP
printers. The envelope feed is on the right side of the tray. That means
that single checks and two checks on a sheet must be fed into the right
side of the tray.

Quicken 2010 and QuickBooks Pro insist that my options for printing an
envelope or single checks or two checks on a sheet are: Left side or
Center feed. Never the right side.

Spoke to HP at length about this problem with my new HP 4500 Officejet
yesterday and they concluded that the problem was Intuit's and not theirs.

I am running a Windows 7 (64) computer and have installed several other Brother and HP Printers in hopes of finding one that will allow feeding of single checks and envelopes from the right side of the tray. If I could find one that works, I can give it the same port as my current HP Officejet 4500. I have done this in the past with success. Unfortunately all the printers I have tried have the same problem with Quicken and Quickbooks. It's almost as if the Intuit driver is stuck and not really being overwritten by new printer drivers. I am way out of my league here and have no other ideas for a cure.

Help! I would like to convert to computerized recordkeeping. The only software available to me is Office 2010 suite. I have created an Access 2010 budget database that includes purchases, vendors and users. I also have created an Excel 2010 spreadsheet with beginning budget amounts and purchases that works very much like a checkbook. However, I don't want to have to enter information in both. Early next week, I have to produce a report that shows what percentage of our available budget we are spending on a vendor. This report will be used as a visual to ask for more money. Any suggestions on the best way to do that for a someone who is not familiar with VBS or SQL or any other real techno language?

If all of the information is in Access already just create a report based on the vendors and money spent with each. You can easily do this if the data is set up correctly in the database.

I want to create a table as in the drawing below, where the first cell is table-wide (as it contains the heading common (pertaining?) to all columns and rows under it) but, and this is where I cannot get it together, where those cells are divided into several columns.

It's a cinch when drawing a table in MSWord (2003) so I cannot imagine why this should not be possible in Excel, but then I don't know everything

If I understand your problem then it is quite simple. Assuming A1 has the "heading" then select thsi cell and all the other cells in row A which pertaim to the tanle and then "merge the cells" and centre the title. I forget how this is done in Excel 2003 but I do remember it being available on the screen on the Edit toolbar I think.

my new laptop windows 9 excel 2010 will not open excel 2007 files sent to me on email. It shows them as compressed files, and won't extract a viewable format. I do not have this problem with excel 97-03 files. What can I do from my end to enable being able to see an excel 2007?

Hey all,

I'm having an issue with the Xerox Workcentre 7120 and Excel 2010. I simply cannot print Excel files whatsoever. It tells me that the document has been sent to the printer, yet two minutes later it tells me that the print job has failed - no reason given, it just says in the Completed Jobs tab that it was cancelled. When looking at the Completed Jobs tab on the printer itself, it tells me that it was "Completed-Error" - basically meaning that nothing happened. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

I've tried many fixes, including restarting the PC, restarting the printer, restarting the print spooler, reinstalling Office 2010 completely, installing another driver for the printer, running a repair on Microsoft Office 2010, reinstalling the printer completely (it's a network printer) and dancing around the PC in complete frustration whilst chanting (the last one helps a lot, strangely enough).

The weirdest thing is that it's just an issue with Excel - Word, Office and other Office programs print fine with this specific printer. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried printing to another printer in another part of the office, and that works perfectly fine. It's just a hassle having to go through multiple doors and parts of the office to retrieve a simple document.

Hi,

The "XP Antispyware 2010" virus infected my computer. Details for this virus can be found at the following web site.

I was able to successfully get rid of this virus by running a scan with Ad-Aware and then with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Unfortunately, either the virus or one of the virus-removal programs left behind some damage. When I attempt to view my Windows Firewall, I get a pop-up message that says "C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe - Application not found.". I get this same error message when I launch HijackThis.exe. I renamed HijackThis.exe to HijackThis.com, and I was able to get it to launch.

I looked in the C:\Windows\System32 folder, and there is a file called rundll32.exe in this directory.

So I ran HijackThis and clicked on the "Do a system scan only" button. I included the log file below. However, when I clicked on the "Generate StartupList log" button and clicked "OK" in the warning box, I never received a log file. I waited 20 minutes, but nothing happened. I tried several more times and never got a log file.

I cannot launch some .exe files, such as McAfee.exe. However, Notepad.exe launches just fine.

I would appreciate your advice on how I might be able to fix my computer. Thanks!

For whatever reason, my signal strength seems to consistently drop, but only when I'm in my basement. I have perfect signal strength when I'm upstairs. Strangely enough there never used to be a problem and it just started out of nowhere. I want my internet speed back, it's frustrating, can someone please help me!?

It depends on where the Wireless Access Point is located, and how many other A/P's are on the same channel(s) as the Access Point. Also if the power is dialed down on the Wifi, that can also cause issues.

I was working tonight, and suddenly, while using powerpoint, after switching from google chrome the title bar and the tool bar all became very big. It also affected every desktop application I have. Please, please help me fix this.

Having the length of two sides of a triangle isn't enough to calculate the length of the 3rd side, for a non right-angle triangle. You'll also need to know one of the angles.

I have been using Excel (now 2007) to keep records of items that we give free after a certain amount of purchases are made. Each year I simply carry over to the new year and delete all those who received the free item so that I start with a clean slate.

I did this yesterday and now noticed that the numbering on the far left column skips the number I deleted and although there are perhaps 30 names there - the numbers are showing up to 237.

How do I change the numbers so that they run consecutively from 1 to 30.....please...in layman terms please!

Hey all,

I have come to you in a fit of desperation. My USB drive was stolen recently and my master Excel data file was lost, which contained all my compiled data from my most recent lab experiment.

Anyway, I have charts of all the important stuff in a word document. The data is there, I can hover on each data point and see the values, and the axes and chart are all accessible for editing.

My question is, how the heck do I extract that data back out of the chart into a table or Excel spreadsheet? There MUST be a way that is better than copying down each data point one at a time

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know it reverse engineering is possible.
Something like convert chart to table?

One thing you could try is copy the chart back to a new Excel file and see if more is possible there than in Word?

Like I said never needed this. Have you googled for something like Excel data reverse enginieering?
Maybe something come up.

I have over 20 years professional experience of Excel.
Until now I have been able to use my old Excel toolbar/macros in 2010 by putting the .xlb files into the XLSTART folder when they have appeared on an "Add-Ins" toolbar.
I have just done a new install of Office 2010 Professional and this has not happened. The files still work on 2 other machines in Excel 2010. Personal.xls loads ok too.

Any ideas ? Can I convert the toolbars to addins ?

It seems that there may be a problem in Office 2010. I just installed it to the standard MS default/recommended settings .........all looked good...used Word great..until I use Excel and each time I try to use excel it sets off an 'Office Configuration' screen which I can not stop..it take a few minutes and then loads OK. I tried to launch it from the installed prgrams icon but there is no files on 'start in' etc..I tied to create a shortcut to the desktop from the excel.exe file and get the same reconfigure issue..it seem that somehow I don't have either permissions or I have a corrupt install..all Office suite works eventually Anyone know how to fix it..please?

I have seen this in the past with Viso that was due to remnents of an earlier trial remaining on disk and in the registry.

I also found that if I cancelled the configuration screen the Viso would load without problems without the need to wait for completion.

There are some rather involved solution stems on Microsoft website - cannot find them at the present but will try to look for them.

The problem was that I could never get the removal steps to actually cure the issue and I put up with the error until my next re-install of Win7, which was not to long in the case of that system

Question: Excel 2010 help

I have a document in Excel 2010 which contains 2 columns. Data from 2nd column is constant, does not change and is assigned to data in 1st column. Names and surnames are great example, so I will use this case for explanation.

Currently there are 200 unique names in 1st column and of course 200 surnames, attached to them in every row. There won't be any new names ever.

This is functionality I'd like to have. I often have to copy some of those names from external database (software) in various numbers. Let's say 50 random names to 1st column. But when I do that, I have to manually write down surnames to 2nd column, because they come from another database (software) which is not synchronized with the first one, so I cant just copy/paste them.

Is there any way to save (connect?) all 200 surnames to all 200 names in Excel, so when I would copy some of names from external database to 1st column, Excel would automatically attach appropriate surname to 2nd row?

Hi Guys,

I have an issue with my Excel application. Every time I open Excel and click on File from the menu bar the application keeps freezing. I can click on the other menu bars but not FILE.

I have tried safe mode, re-installing the the whole MS Suite, and repairing and nothing worked.

Does anybody have some tips for me.

If cell A1 is a empty cell and in cell A2 I have =if(A1>=0, 5%, ""), how can i have the forumla return nothing rather that 5%.  Excel treats the empty cell as a 0 which I dont want it to, just as a empty cell

Have you tried formating cell A1 to be "text" instead of default in which it expects a number. Not sure of this will fix it as for I cant test this on this computer I am at.

Question: MSO 2010 - Excel

When trying to print a selected area, the "rows to repeat at top" are greyed out (as are the other two adjacent options.
Have read the "cures" for Excel 2003 and 2008, (leave print preview and use file/print/page setup) but these do not work for my 2010 version.
Can anyone help please?

I've heard of this error before, it seems to be a bug in Excel. Did you get to the page set-up through the print options? If so, try the button on the ribbon instead - select the Page Layout tab, the click on the Print Titles button in the Page Layout group. Hopefully it should allow you to select the option you're after.

Question: EXCEL 2010 HELP

Hi, my boss clicked on install upgrade to change to windows 10 everything is pretty much ok apart from all my excel spreadsheets. There are cells on each spreadsheet that wont print out the text in them. Only a few random ones here and there. In print preview they show the text there but when printing it doesnt show up. Anyone have any suggestions please

Hi all
I'm trying to add a little Calculator function to a Spreadsheet I use for trading shares.

I pull basic data from YAHOO finance and would like to have at the bottom of a spreadsheet a calculator which would allow me to enter Nr of shares bought, Price Paid and return things like Profit / Loss.

The advantage of having it on the spreadsheet is then it's all in the same place.

The spreadsheet looks something like this -- enclosed pic

I'd like to embed the calculator in column M say starting at Row 15-- I'm not sure whether this should be done with a FORM or embed another spreadsheet.

Any ideas / links --- all the googling I've done either quote examples that are so impossibly complicated or hard or just too basic.

Question: Excel 2010

 I am learning Excel 2010 and My Instructor wants me to attach the Function Formulas to my assignment.  How is the best way to do this?  When I am in a worksheet that contains Data, I click the Formulas Tab, then click "Show Formulas" and they display, then I save  the worksheet.  When I reopen the worksheet, the Data is displayed and not the Formulas.  What am I missing?Thank You and I am looking forward to help.  StevenRunning Windows 7, Ult 32 Bit.

I was unable to duplicate this with Excel 2010. I opened a worksheet, "Show Formulas" like you said, and then saved and closed it. When I opened it back up again, it was still showing the formulas.Is there any reason that the file is or could be unsaveable or read-only? Can you make other changes than showing formulas that are saved?

You can cahange the columns width, you kan change the font sieze.
Could you be more specific?

You can select the 4 columns and then double click in the border between A and B to autofit.
Because you are using the autofilter you van also increase the column width a little, but with your info it's unclear what you really want / need

I am new to Excel 2010 but I am learning quickly. I love working with Excel and once I know what to do and where to go, I'm all set.

At this moment, I was asked to create a yearly spreadsheet (one month per tab) for sales reps and what they do in terms of correspondence.

In the old version we had here (Excel 2003), I tried doing the same and it didn't work, either.

What I'm trying to do is whatever information is created in January (names of clients and sales for that month) be transferred to February BUT allowing to make changes in February for the month following. So, if in January I had company ABC, BCA, CAB and in February I added CCB, I'd like it to show up in March. I used the "=" sign and it works from January to February but not from February to March....maybe it's because its already a formula? I'd like some help in this please.

Another explanation: In February, one company was removed, I'd like it to not show up in March. And then any changes from March onto April. Basically, each month, the reps will be able to add or remove clients but data stays for stat purposes.

Can this be done with perhaps an "IF" formula????

There is nothing new in Excel 2010 that would allow this to work that I know of. There may, however, be a way to do it. I'll think about it and see if I come up with anything. Maybe someone else will have another idea before I respond again.

Question: Bug in Excel 2010?

For my workbook, I have defined the default font to be 11 pt Calibri. However, when I select a row (or column) and select Clear Formats, the cells are reformatted to 10 pt Arial. To me, this seems like a bug. Am I missing something?

How have you set the default font. You can set the Default Font by opening Excel, select file & then Options & under General there is a Sub Heading "When Creating new Workbooks" & there you will see "Use this as the default font". Then you can use the drop down list to select the font & size. If you change this it will only operate on any new workbooks that you create. Any previous ones will remain in the font that was originally used.
I use Excel 2013 so this info comes from that, but I think Excel 2010 is the same or very similar.

Question: Excel 2010

Hello. I am having an issue with formulas. Whenever someone emails me a spreadsheet or if I open a previously done spreadsheet that I have not opened before, there are formula errors thru-out. Some are just simple addition. What is the cause of this and how can I fix it? Also, my co-worker and I have the same Excel versions and it still comes up. Thanks!

Question: Excel 2010

When I click on my Excel 2010 shortcut instead of Excel opening I get a Windows message asking if I want to allowthe Programme to make changes to my computer. If I click 'yes', Excel opens but with a blank blue screen in the working area instead of the normal grid. Likewise if I click on an Excel attachment in an email the same thing happens. To open an Excel document I have to go to the main Microsoft Office section in Programmes and click on Excel. This has only happened recently. Any ideas on the cause of the problem and on a solution?

Try System Restore - choose a restore date which precedes the date when the problem was first noticed.
